Hell at first hand Spring Hill Road resident, Esther Komar, is still smiling even though she lost several sheds and loads of family treasures in the recent bushfires that scorched areas around Kempsey. The fire damage would have been much greater if not for the work of the various fire services. Your Local Independent Sue Paterick’s eye witness account of the fires and her own frightening evacuation is on Page 3.

We ran from ‘fire hell’ Your Local Independent journalist SUE PATERICK gives a first-hand account of her evacuation last Sunday as a bushfire threatened
funny what “youIt’stake when there
“
is little time left to leave
WE were in the middle of a movie and sheltering inside from the 47-plus degree heat, when friends rang to see if we were okay because a bushfire was burning out of control just up the road. We raced outside to see black smoke billowing into the faded blue sky, the fire fanned by a strong westerly wind. The intensity of the heat seared my eyeballs and made my legs go weak. When we turned on ABC news we were just in time to discover that an emergency warning was in place for a fire burning at South Kempsey. The report went on to say that the fire was at Dondingalong and properties were under threat. People were told to take shelter because it was too late to leave. The fire was burning a few kilometres south of us at a place called Spring Hill Road, where one of our best friends, Esther Komar, lives. When we called she was okay but couldn’t talk because she was putting out spot fires. In a deafening roar a huge firefighting plane flew overhead, so low its belly almost brushed the treetops. It was then we heard more planes and helicopters. While we sprang into action turning on sprinkler systems and raking up any leaf litter near our wooden house on 40 hectares of bush, our friend was surviving under her verandah wrapped in a wet woollen blanket as the fire ball went over her house. “I was really concerned I was going to fry,” Esther said. After the fire passed, she saved her house and large shed by putting out more spot fires. She has lost other out buildings and a tank but is otherwise okay. One of her neighbours wasn’t so fortunate because their house was lost. We hear she only had time to save herself by running into the dam.
Spring Hill Road resident, Esther Komar, shows me where she took shelter under her house from the extreme bushfire that destroyed 453 hectares at Dondingalong
A firefighting plane was a welcome sight
My husband, Rick Furber, housing down our house while the sprinkler system on the eaves adds extra moisture, as an out-of-control bushfire was burning through hundreds of hectares of bushland and properties just up the road from us My husband, Rick, and I felt we were okay until the wind changed to the south and the air was suddenly thick with smoke. It stung my eyes and burnt my throat. After the last bushfire we endured several years ago, Rick had fixed copper pipe and sprinklers to the eaves of our house. “We’ll just turn the sprinklers on one more time and then we should leave,” he said, his face pinched and worried. I had already packed a bag with a few clothes for us, which was already in the car. It’s funny what you take when there is little
time left to leave. I grabbed my wedding ring, external hard drive off my computer and our certificates, especially our passports and plane tickets to Tonga in May, and put the dogs in the car. My husband drove his ute. As I followed him down our dusty dirt road the wind howled like a dingo at the full moon, throwing large tree branches at us with every turn. It wasn’t until we had passed the police roadblock just up the road and couldn’t go back that I realised I had forgotten to take all our old
photographs. We met at the end of our road at a friend’s place. When we were allowed back home at midnight the RFS were battling to save another friend’s house to the south of us. Have a fire plan ready is the advice the RFS tells us time and time again. And while we did have a plan, next time I’ll write a list to cross off just what we need to take. It’s raining here this morning and cool. The wind has dropped but a convoy of fire trucks and support vehicles just headed up the road to the fire site, and I can hear helicopters again. On the RFS website the advice is that there is no immediate danger but to stay up-to-date in case the situation changes.

It’s time we looked at climate facts SO much is being written by some well-meaning climate change activists about the need for the community to embrace clean energy to avoid the socalled destructive influence of climate change (previously global warming) on our planet. We are now being bombarded by global warming news that the last three summers have been the hottest on record when it was not mentioned that the Northern Hemisphere is suffering its coldest extended winters. Burning fossil fuel for energy is being falsely blamed for increasing greenhouse gases in the atmosphere which is again claimed to be the cause of higher temperatures. When we listen closely to the news we are told that today’s temperature is the hottest recorded since the period
Govt hits the poor WELCOME to 2017 and what will the year bring for our piece of paradise? Well, so far it has meant that the large pensioner population here, who set aside a little bit extra each week over their lifetime for their retirement, have been penalized from January 1 by having the pension reduced or
in late 1800s to early 1900s. The basis on which the deduced average temperature records is never stated. Thus the majority of readers and listeners are being deceived by a minority of people trying to push an agenda of deception. Out text books tell us that carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is a necessary element to allow plants and trees to absorb and convert this gas into oxygen in order to maintain oxygen levels on the planet. Thus we need carbon dioxide and we do not need to reduce it if we are to maintain a natural balance. Sea water temperatures increase and fall based on the natural flow of currents in the world oceans. A single measurement of sea water temperature does not represent the

out at an alarming rate claiming monies owed have to be repaid or debt collectors will be called in. Often, those receiving these odious letters do not in fact owe any money. This is not the start to the year this group deserves nor expected. Meanwhile in Canberra, we have politicians overclaiming expenses and viewing this source of funding as an entitlement even if it were unrelated

Why haven’t our local parliamentarians representing this area spoken up for their constituents? We deserve better representation than this. Colleen Carmody

THERE’S a lot going for getting older. Recently, I’ve had plenty of time to reflect over my 54 years on this earth and I’ve realised there are real benefits to getting older. We all go through stages - teens, 20s, 30s and hopefully by the time we have hit our 40s we have accumulated some wisdom, street smarts and good old garden variety ‘common sense’. Hopefully. The thing I am liking most about getting older? It’s taken me the best part of 50 years to ‘like me’ and that is empowering! I like the fact that I am more comfortable in my own skin than I have ever been. I have my boundaries and as I get older, a lot tighter rein on those boundaries and my tolerance of people that cross them. I have been a ‘peacekeeper’ all my life. I have tolerated so much crap, because I don’t like conflict. Rather than have an argument I used to allow people to walk in to my life, dump their crap and make it my problem. All to keep the peace! No more! Don’t get me wrong. I love helping people and always will. I just choose not to take crap on board that doesn’t fit within my boundaries. If I don’t agree with something, I will tell you. Be warned, if you don’t want my honest opinion/answer, please, just don’t ask/involve me! I don’t have the capacity to second guess what you wanted me to say.

equating to almost 50% of the state’s power needs has increased energy costs, reduced supply security and led to multiple occurrences of a total state shutdown. We all know that global alarmists have been predicting for 20 years that temperatures would rise by more than 2 degrees centigrade which would melt the ice caps, cause severe drought and cause the sea level to rise. Has this happened? We are all still waiting. Do we allow ourselves to be scared into believing a lie or is it time that we looked at the facts that we are being brainwashed by media based on false news to accept a change that is not in the economic or environmental interests of the majority of Australians. average temperature over a year. The proponents of clean energy fail to disclose where we can source our immediate energy needs when clouds block solar panels or wind fails to blow. In fact remote area power supplies are designed on a combination of wind, solar, battery and diesel generation in order to maintain continuity of supply to the consumer’s needs. These systems are expensive, have high operating costs and low reliability thus remote areas agitate to be connected to a grid. The clean energy lobby group wish us to believe and invest in solar panels for our homes. The push by South Australia to adopt clean energy from a combination of wind and solar generation now

By SUE PATERICK THE paid and unpaid work of some of the Macleay Valley’s amazing women will be recognised and acknowledged again this year at Kempsey’s International Women’s Day (IWD) celebrations on Wednesday, March 8. This is the sixth consecutive year the celebrations have been held in Kempsey, and the Women of the Macleay Awards has been so successful and well-received there will be two categories in 2017. There is a strong call to locals to take the opportunity to nominate a woman for recognition in either the Young Women of the Macleay Awards for women up to 25 years of age or the Women of the Macleay Awards for women 26 and over. Kempsey Family Support Services auspices the IWD celebrations and its Executive Officer, June Wilson, said the women who are nominated come from a range of backgrounds and local communities. “These women have selflessly given up their time and energy in the community, giving above and beyond,” June explained. “They are often strong leaders, advocates of change, quiet achievers and women who stand strong in the face of adversity. To honour these women and past winners with a more permanent reminder of the personal investment and commitment they have made in and to their community, the IWD committee has decided to build bench-seat type structure in Kempsey’s leafy and tranquil Riverside Park.

A PORT Macquarie father and son have taken out top honours in round two of the national competition for their chosen hobby. Former Port Macquarie-Hastings councillor Adam Roberts and his son Jackson, with the support of good mate from Newcastle Jason Cullender, were awarded the winner’s trophy for their succulent lamb at the recent Barbeques Galore Australian Barbecue Championships. The team also wowed judges with their beef, chicken and pork ribs and made overall second place Reserve Grand Champions. The competition win was made all the more special by it being on Jackson’s tenth birthday, Adam says. “I felt more pressure to show Jackson a great time on his birthday and for his first competition than I did competing in a very tough field which included some of the best barbecuers in the country. “It was a proud Dad moment when we got called to the stage and presented with our trophies.” The team were presented with $700 cash, a range of prizes and of course a trophy for the mantelpiece. The win has helped them climb higher up the national ranking from their position of 51 out of 203, in the inaugural competition last year.

Beatles festival will just get bigger NEWLY appointed Minister for Tourism and Major Events Adam Marshall joined Neil Porter, Port Macquarie MP Leslie Williams, John Wells and Rob Harris, front, in celebration of the Beatles Festival, held last weekend. The four-day event is in its early days but is hoped to develop to rival the Parkes’ Elvis Festival and the Tamworth Country Music Festival, Mr Marshall said. The NSW government has given $5000 to organisers to research the economic impact of the Beatles Festival on Port Macquarie and the greater region. “The Beatles Festival is growing in popularity with not only our local community but also with people outside our area,” Mrs Williams said. “The survey results from last year showed an increase in visitations from throughout NSW, but there is still more work to be done to attract a wider audience.” Data from the research will be used by Destination NSW to secure further funding in the future.
Justice network sends out SOS Local volunteers needed to support disabled
By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC
People with an intellectual disability some“times get arrested when they’ve done some-
PEOPLE with an intellectual disability on the Mid North Coast now have a greater chance of justice. That assistance is coming via community organisation, Intellectual Disability Rights Service however, volunteers are needed to ensure all locals who need help are catered for. “We are a community legal-based and disability advocacy centre in Sydney. We are a specialist legal centre for people with an intellectual disability,” said Janene Cootes, Executive Officer of the Intellectual Disability Rights Service. The Criminal Justice Support Network is a service of the Intellectual Disability Rights Service, providing statewide support to people with intellectual disabilities who are in contact with the criminal justice system. “At present we don’t have anyone physically in Port Macquarie so for people in Port Macquarie we are talking to them over the phone. When they are involved with the police ideally they need to have somebody there with them to help them with understanding their rights, staying calm and getting legal advice. “So the reason we are seeking volunteers in Port Macquarie is because we get calls asking for that sort of support at local police stations and we just don’t have any current volunteers in that area.” The Criminal Justice Support Network
thing that they didn’t know was wrong, or they just haven’t been able to give a good account of themselves when they are challenged
“
currently has 120 volunteers throughout New South Wales, and Janene says that Port Macquarie would need around six volunteers for that area. “A lot of our volunteers have been with us for more than six years and a lot of people find they are doing something really useful and something that has really made a difference … and it has,” said Janene. The organisation’s volunteers are comprehensively trained in how the court and police systems work, and how to help a person with an intellectual disability, understand the legal system they are facing. The organisation is able to provide personal support to victims, witnesses and defendants who have an intellectual disability in police stations, at court and during legal appointments. These valued volunteers make a real difference for the Criminal Justice Support Network clients, enabling them to understand what is happening and to exercise their rights. “Just this morning we had a call notifying us that somebody had been arrested in a Sydney
area,” Janene said. “So a volunteer went there and was a support for that person at the police station. “We were able to get that person legal advice. He then needed to go to court for a bail decision. The volunteer was able to support him at court as well. “In that situation it is so important to make sure that people understand bail conditions or conditions in apprehended violence orders and such, so they don’t get into more trouble. It does help to keep people out of custody, out of jail.” The Criminal Justice Support Network’s aim is to reduce the disadvantages people experience in the legal system due to their disability. “For somebody who has an intellectual disability they often won’t be able to read, or they might have trouble understanding police questions, for example in a police interview,” explained Janene. “What we also find is they often are afraid or are keen to please, so they will just agree with what the police are saying without necessarily understanding the questions and the
implications of the questions that they are asked. “People with an intellectual disability sometimes get arrested when they’ve done something that they didn’t know was wrong, or they just haven’t been able to give a good account of themselves when they are challenged or because something about their behaviour seems odd or threatening. “It happens to a lot of people with intellectual disability in circumstances that it wouldn’t happen to someone else. “The law tells the police that if somebody who is under arrest has an intellectual disability they should have a support person with them at the police station, and that’s the role we are trying to fill.” The Intellectual Disability Rights Service has been around for 30 years and the Criminal Justice Support Network started 13 years ago and is a community organisation that relies on the government for its funding. The Criminal Justice Support Network also provides statewide training for people with intellectual disabilities, police, court staff, lawyers, disability services and any other interested organisations and services. The training aims to increase awareness and improve skills in communicating with people who have an intellectual disability within the criminal justice system. For further information on the Criminal Justice Support Network, please contact Jacqui on 1300 665 908 or jacqui@idrs.org.au or visit www.idrs.org.au

Troy’s tour a happy return By NIKALA SIM HE may have received Australian country music’s highest honour but, thanks to his family, Troy Cassar-Daley remains humble. The veteran musician was inducted into the Australasian Country Music Roll of Renown at the Tamworth Country Music Festival in January this year. This recognition comes on the back of a very successful 2016 which saw him release his first book and tenth solo album, which earned him a 2017 Golden Guitar Album of the Year award. These achievements have put Troy on a high for his current tour which includes South West Rocks and Laurieton. “It’s particularly nice to be around the Mid North Coast because a lot of the songs over the last five or six records have a lot of where my grandmother comes from,” Troy says. “My nan was born in Yarrahapinni and so I have a real affinity with the area - my nan was very special to me.” The Grafton lad first spread his wings as a musician playing gigs at Crescent Head, Kempsey and Port Macquarie where he was promoted by mate John Logan, who still fills the role. “It’s a real walk down memory lane, it’s like Thelma and Louise – but no-one’s driving off a cliff,” Troy quipps. It was the surfing breaks in gig towns that introduced him to the large Indigenous community here, he says. “I always get a big mob coming along to the shows - it’s wonderful.” He said one of the best shows he’s ever played was the Kempsey Saltwater Freshwater
Glad to be back on the Mid North Coast on the land of his nan, Troy Cassar-Daley will play two concerts this weekend Festival. “It was the biggest group of black and white faces in the one place in the showground - it just moved me,” Troy says. And his recent trip through with Paul Kelly for the Freedom Ride re-enactment was heaps of fun, he says, with these community events being the things that draw him back. The album and book of the same name, ‘Things I Carry Around’, explore life experiences never revealed previously in his song writing. “It’s great to bring these songs back because it’s almost talking about where it all started for me,” he says And this was his first single released when he signed with Sony at the tender age of 25. The music giant was concerned his first single
ARE YOU A VETERAN, AN EX - OR CURRENT SERVICEMAN, A WIDOW OR OTHER DEPENDENT?
‘Dream Out Loud’, about bringing black and white people together, might be too contentious. Troy’s response was the only one he could have made. “That’s what I’ve done all my life, that’s me, what I’m actually releasing is me,” he says. “What I wanted to do was make music for everyone, and if it was going to be just for my Indigenous mob then that’s easy I can do that too, but I want everyone to share what I’ve got to say and what I’ve got to sing. And that was my goal as a kid - to bring people together.” If ‘Dream Out Loud’ was going to be the first instance of what they were going to hear of his career then he was very happy with that, Troy says, because it painted the picture. “And I think that seed that was planted with
that particular single has grown into a nice old gnarled tree now and it’s not been struck by lightning, it’s been hacked at a bit, its bark has fallen off at different times, but it’s still growing. “The roots are well and truly in the ground and I’ve got my family to thank for that.” The gift of belonging that his family gave him is something he holds forth consciously as a proud Indigenous role model, Troy says. “I take being a role model seriously for starters because I want kids to see there are troubles in life. “I had a chance to write about it in the book this time because I had never really mentioned it in songs and things. “But I had to go back and revisit some painful stuff. I think as a role model I want to be able to break myths and make sure everyone feels like they belong. “Especially our youth, because they are finding suicide rates are high for a lot of reasons. “But I think it’s a sense of belonging - that people feel they are worthless, that they don’t belong.” He says he is lucky because he has always felt like he belonged, through his family and community. The musician urges elders to reach out to kids even though they sometimes get to the stage where they think what elders have to say is not important. “All kids do that - there were times I dispelled what elders said. “But I’m urging everyone to get together and talk a bit more because what the elders have to offer is that experience of life. You’re not going to get that on the internet, you’re not going to get it from anything else, you’re going to get it from your elders. If you are lucky enough to still have them breathe them in.” Cassar-Daley will play at South West Rocks Country Club on Friday, February 17 (Phone 6566 6252) and Laurieton United Services Club on Saturday, February 18 (Phone 6559 9110 to book your tickets). KAREN BLEASDALE Senior Constable Domestic Violence Liaison Officer
How long have you lived in or around the Hastings? This area has always been a part of my upbringing and it will continue to be a great part of my life. It’s a beautiful location and community. What do you love most about the Hastings? What is not to love! There’s the coast, country, mountains, rain-forest, great climate - all right here. No matter what day you wake up you can do something outside. It’s not far from the city and I always appreciate what we have when I come home. We don’t have to travel to be on holidays, we live it! Where do you work and what do you love about your work? I work for NSW Police. No day or hour is the same. It is ever changing and grounding. You appreciate your loved ones more. If it’s a bad day, a wander around the station puts a smile on your face, there’s always a laugh coming from somewhere in the building. I enjoy community engagements when people from our older community come up and start to chat. There’s nothing more in it, it’s a simple exchange of a few minutes of time, listening to a story they want to share. What do you like least about your work? Nice people have bad things happen to them, for us to be involved. How do you start your day? You know, no day is the same, absolutely no routine or set tasks. Just see what happens and go with it. What do you do in your spare time? I love anything fibre related from alpacas, sheep, rabbits, goats … if it’s got a fibre source that can be used to create something then I want to know about it and play!
LEGISLATION has been introduced into Parliament that mandates professional standards for financial advisers. The Coalition Government is committed to ensuring that consumers are able to have confidence that if they seek financial advice, they are getting it from a financial adviser who is professionally competent. The Corporations Amendment (Professional Standards of Financial Advisers) Bill 2016 includes: • Compulsory education requirements for both new and existing financial advisers; • Supervision requirements for new advisers; • A code of ethics for the industry; • An exam that will represent a common benchmark across the industry; and • An ongoing professional development component. The new professional standards regime will commence on January 1, 2019. From this date, new advisers entering the industry will be required to hold a relevant degree. Existing financial advisers will have access to transitional arrangements, allowing them two years, until January 1, 2021, to pass the exam, and five years, until January 1, 2024, to meet the education requirements. The transition period recognises that existing advisers may need to complete the education requirements on a part-time basis,
Free Lifeline courses
LIFELINE Mid Coast and the Holiday Coast Credit Union have banded together to bring you ‘The Wellness Sessions’. A free training opportunity to any person volunteering across the Mid North Coast. Lifeline Mid Coast and the Holiday Coast Credit Union, recognise the enormous value of local volunteers, and their continued development and well-being as being a high priority for both organisations. Charities are run on a shoe-string budget already and sometimes they are not able to offer their volunteers external training courses, simply because it is unaffordable. Over the years, Lifeline have developed, in-house, many training programs which they would now like to share with volunteers to develop their skills and confidence. Between Tuesday and Friday, February 21 and 24, Lifeline Mid Coast will be presenting eight half-day courses, including DV Awarness, safeTALK, Community Support Skills, Mental Health First Aid Overview, together with a scheduled day of networking for volunteers and volunteer managers. Volunteers are urged to take advantage of these sessions, get skilled up, meet fellow volunteers and have a lot of fun at the same time. Lifeline Mid Coast and the Holiday Coast Credit Union would like to give volunteers from all walks of life access to free education. The sessions will be held at Rydges Port Macquarie with morning and afternoon tea provided. To book in for one of the sessions, please contact Maria on admin@ lifelinemidcoast.org.au

while continuing to service their existing clients. The government will establish an independent standards body to administer the regime. The body will be responsible for developing and setting the industry exam, developing the code of ethics, and setting the education requirements, including working with education providers to establish appropriate courses. The body will develop the exam, the Code, and the standards in accordance with international best practice and will consult broadly with stakeholders throughout this process. The body will be funded by the industry. As a result of the Coalition Government’s reforms, Australians will have access to financial advisers who will put their interests first, and who are professionally competent and ethical. The Coalition Government will continue to take action to ensure Australians can participate in the financial system, with confidence.
‘Kindergarten’ has grown on all of us
WHEN Friedrich Froebel came up with the idea of a kindergarten for children, he could not have envisaged that the word would become such a household word that people around the world would readily understand. It was a word that was adopted under the German name that Froebel gave it. Friedrich wanted to create a garden for children, a place where they could develop their intelligence by playing games, singing and engaging in other activities appropriate for little children. It was a big idea when Froebel thought about the first kindergarten in 1837, grounded in ‘play and activity’ and the nurturing of creativity through the systematic deployment of a sequence of ‘gifts’, such as coloured balls, geometrical building blocks and mosaic tiles. Froebel was using nature as the model of perfection to educate children. He wanted to teach children how to learn, observe, reason, express and create through play, employing philosophies of unity and interconnectedness. The kindergarten that many grown-ups remember is one of songs, games, playing with blocks, finger painting and nature walks. But today, some kindergartens have become
my
LAURIE BARBER
simply smaller first grades. In his book Inventing Kindergarten, Norman Brosterman makes a strong argument that the inspiration for much of modern art and architecture can be linked to the invention of the kindergarten. With a history of caring for young children Froebel moved to Blankenburg, Germany, in 1837 where he set up his school, that later he named a kindergarten. Froebel called for German women to come together and support the kindergarten. Because he described children as plants and teachers as gardeners, the term kindergarten emerged, kinder meaning child and garten meaning garden. The teachers, called kindergarteners, were called to educate the children from the earliest years through their own experiences to become integrated and whole people. In his school, Froebel emphasised play. His books were burned by the German
community. They did not believe children needed to play in order to learn. They thought his theories were outrageous. Different countries have their own ideas about kindergartens and develop those ideas each year. Some attempts have been made to describe the kindergarten system as kindergartenism. A kindergarten pupil has sometimes been referred to as a kindergartenism pupil. Some attempts have been made to change the name of kindergarten to pre-school but my thoughts come up with something different when pre-schools are mentioned. I don’t know about you. The book Sydney and the Bush, which the Department of Education published in May, 1980, quotes Froebel as saying that his system was based on the principle that education practices should be suited to the nature of children. The Arthur Mee Children’s Encyclopedia, which I received as a little boy, said Froebel was inspired by John Henry Pestalizzi. Froebel was dull and lonely but soon developed an education system that encouraged others to adopt his new kindergarten system. lauriebarber.com; lbword@midcoast.com.au.

Koala-friendly dogs
DOG attacks on koalas are one of three main causes for the ongoing decline in the local koala population, and a new project aims to reduce these attacks through specialist training as part of a 12 month pilot. Renowned dog trainer, Steve Austin, has been engaged by Port Macquarie-Hastings Council to share his knowledge and train up to eight locally-based dog trainers. This transfer of knowledge, which uses wildlife protection principles, will provide invaluable insights that may be implemented into ongoing local training and education programs. “Council takes the protection of our local koala population extremely seriously, and the trial program is yet another initiative we are undertaking to protect one of our most loved icons,” said Council Director Matt Rogers. “For the trial to be meaningful we are looking for up to 32 puppies and 16 known problem dogs to be trained, and encourage local dog owners to express their interest,” Mr Rogers said. The Payne family of Port Macquarie, who are owners of nine-month-old staffy ‘Zoey’ are keen to participate in the training program. “It’s a great initiative because when we’re going for walks we often see koalas, and as a family we believe in looking after our local koala population,” said Bradd Payne. Training is expected to commence in April, and dog owners can express their interest through council’s website at pmhc.nsw.gov.au/ koalatraining.

Rate rise on the agenda The Rinse Cycle By Adam Roberts - Former Councillor, Port MacquarieHastings Council
IN the first council meeting for 2017, Port Macquarie-Hastings councillors will decide on ‘future rate rises’ with a report asking councillors to support an application to the Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal (IPART) to increase rates totalling 5.39% for the next financial year. I very much recall a lot of banter about the ‘planned’ rate rises during the September, 2016, council elections and the denial by a number of candidates who suggested that rate rises were not going to happen. Firstly the Mayor Peter Besseling was interviewed by a local radio station and categorically denied that there were ‘any’ rate rises on the horizon. This was followed quickly by the Deputy Mayor Lisa Intemann who told a full audience at a meet the candidates forum that the people suggesting rate rises were on the cards

HELPING others experiencing distress. Friends and family members can often approach us for help individually when they are experiencing distress. But increasingly work settings involve people disclosing their life worries and seeking emotional support from staff and business owners. The college has two programs to assist here – one for business owners and staff to develop basic counselling skills, and the other for people in distress needing direct small group support to help them cope. Both courses are run by senior psychotherapist Margaret Bailitis, who has decades of experience in helping people deal with their life issues in constructive, holistic, self-help ways. Accidental Counsellor is a one-session program that can run after hours in your workplace or at the college, and it helps staff develop understanding about how to support people without getting into all the details of their problems. Business research shows that empathy and customer relationships are the two most important aspects of workplace development and success in the modern era. So building skills in listening and discerning advice, about seeking further targeted help for particular issues, can really add value to your staff relations with customers. For those people who are living with social and emotional problems, or recovering from a bout of depression or mental distress, Margaret runs the Moving Forward With Confidence small group sharing sessions. These confidential narrative therapy style sessions run over six weeks in each series, and they have been radically improving many people’s quality of life. were “...putting fear into people for no good reason”. The Besseling campaign even went to the trouble of producing campaign matter that used the slogan ‘rate rise or rate lies’. Essentially suggesting that those campaigning to stop the rate rises were ‘liars’. It hasn’t even been six months since the election and we have an application at the ready to raise rates. I’m not lying or fear-mongering. It’s real and it’s unbelievable. The official lines from the council suggest that they ‘need’ the money to maintain the current level of maintenance to the local roads and if they don’t get it, the level of service to the roads may drop. Well folks, that’s what I call a baloney sandwich. And I’ll tell you why. In the two months since the December, 2016, council meeting, council’s investment accounts have grown by a staggering $5,000,000 to now see the cash stash council has in its coffers reaching a record $231,000,000. That is $231,000,000 of rates, fees and other

taxpayer funded grants that council has available to spend on roads, infrastructure and of course roads maintenance. Council does not need a rate rise to better deliver on roads maintenance and renewal and frankly, they have more money than they know how to spend effectively and efficiently. This is evidenced by the massive hoard over the summer break and the $125,000,000 council has added to its cash stash since 2012. It’s a good thing that IPART must approve the rate rise because they are a last line of defence for the community should the council decide to make the application at the February meeting. Ratepayers can contact IPART directly to protest the application and try to have the rate increase denied. As a ratepayer, I’ll be protesting the application should it proceed. Check for garden ‘glory’ invasion
Hastings festival funds STATE MATTERS
With Leslie Williams State Member for Port Macquarie
The bright mauve/purple flowers of morning glory are visible during summer WEED of the month: Five Leaved Morning Glory (Mile-a-minute). Latin name: Ipomoea cairica The large single mauve, purple or pink flowers of Morning Glory are commonly seen around Port Macquarie during summer. Often seen in reserves, they can germinate and grow into plants in your backyard. Check if these environmental weeds have invaded your garden. Morning Glory is a fast-growing, perennial vine to 30m with trailing and twining stems; stems with milky sap when cut/broken. Flowers: Funnel-shaped, violet to purplish violet with a darker throat, rarely white. Leaves: Are made up of 5-7 leaflets in a star shape. Fruit: A dry capsule to 15mm with 4-5 hard brown seeds. It is a fast grower capable of spreading and (re)infecting over long ranges by spread of floating seed in flowing fresh water, coastal and estuarine salt water and more generally as a contaminant of soil and garden refuse. What do I do if I find morning glory in my garden? Seedlings and small plants can be hand pulled, with the root intact. If the vine is in a tree or bush, cut the stems that connect it to the ground. Trace back the stem and where it roots, grub out, including the main root system. If the whole stem and root in the ground is hard to find, take a length of stem, scrape the outer surface of the stem until the inside green is exposed, then paint 30 cm of the main stem/ roots with undiluted glyphosate herbicide. Summer garden to do list: Agapanthus care: Remove any flowers before they start to seed. These are a common garden plants in Port Macquarie that originate in Africa but can easily spread into reserves if the seeds are left on the flower heads. Impatiens/Buzzy Lizzy (Impatiens walleriana): This small hardy succulent stemmed bush from Africa is an environmental weed. It is bought from the nursery because it is bushy and shade tolerant. When trimming, do not dump pieces in reserves, please bag them and place them in the bin.
Representatives of some of the community groups to benefit from the $27,600 in funding
Grants for community groups THE hopes and dreams of 17 community groups from all corners of the Hastings and Camden Haven can now become a reality thanks to a $27,600 funding injection from Hastings Coop’s Community Chest grants program. The non-for-profit groups represent everyone from schools and sporting clubs to disability, volunteer and special interest groups, who will use the grants for projects and infrastructure that will leave a lasting legacy. At Thursday night’s presentation Hastings Co-op’s chief executive officer Allan Gordon
explained that Hastings Co-op IGA customers play a pivotal role in the Community Chest program, with funds from specially-marked ‘Community Chest’ products pooled to provide the grants. “Every time you purchase one of these specially-marked products you can feel good about giving back to the community too,” he said. “Communtiy Chest is all about building a brighter future and recognising the tapestry of community groups that make a real difference to the Hastings way of life.”
Working to help youth find jobs WELL we are one week down in the parliamentary sitting cycle for 2017 and already I have seen some great initiatives being put through the chambers that will help the North Coast economy immensely. One such initiative is the scheme to provide extra support to help young people on the North Coast join the workforce, with legislation to establish the innovative Youth Jobs PaTH program. While the unemployment rate on the North Coast is relatively low, there are still young people struggling to get into the workforce. Youth Jobs PaTH will help increase young people’s job prospects by ensuring they are better prepared for the workplace and encouraging more businesses to open the door to them. The three-step Youth Jobs PaTH programme is a key component of the $840 million Youth Employment Package announced in the 2016 Budget. The programme will help young people become work ready through intensive preemployment skills training, delivering the work-

ready skills that many employers have said young job seekers often lack. Following the pre-employment training, up to 120,000 internships over four years will be available for young Australians to gain real work experience. Finally, an increased wage subsidy for employers who take on young job-seekers will provide an incentive for local employers to give young people the opportunity to obtain gainful employment. The 2016-17 Youth Employment Package follows the Government’s earlier $331 million investment in the Youth Employment Strategy, designed to help young people at increased risk of long-term unemployment improve their chances of finding and keeping a job.
PORT Macquarie In The Spotlight For Regional Tourism Funding: In the past week I welcomed the newlyappointed Minister for Tourism and Major Events Adam Marshall to Port Macquarie to announce $20,000 for the Port Macquarie produce festival, Tastings On Hastings. The funding has been provided through the NSW Government’s 2017 Flagship Event Fund, which boosts regional tourism by supporting marketing activities that drive overnight visitation to regional NSW. The Flagship Event Fund represents country NSW at its best, with local communities coming together to stage events that showcase the unique character, culture and attributes of their region. I am delighted that one of the North Coast’s premier festivals will receive funding. Tastings On Hastings showcases the region’s diverse food and wine culture by bringing together local farmers, food producers, wine growers, brewers, restaurants and cafes, while attracting visitors from across the country. We look forward to welcoming many more visitors to beautiful Port Macquarie as a result of this exciting event, helping to further reinforce our region as a must-see destination in NSW.” The 2017 Flagship Event Fund is managed by the State’s tourism and major events agency, Destination NSW. For more information visit www.destinationnsw.com.au Recreational Fishing Grants: Fishing and community groups can now apply for NSW Recreational Fishing Trust grants to improve recreational fishing across our area. This year $15 million has been allocated from the sale of recreational fishing licenses to both freshwater and saltwater projects in 2016-17. The grants are available for both large projects involving more than $10,000 of funding, and smaller projects involving less than $10,000. This is a great opportunity for individuals and community groups to apply for these grants to improve recreational fishing in our region. Applications are open to anyone, including fishing clubs and organisations, universities, councils, community groups, individuals and joint applications are also encouraged. This program is another way the NSW Government continues to reinvest this resource back into the recreational fishing sector to help ensure a bright future for NSW fishing. Gone Fishing NSW fishing club grants of up to $2000 are also available for groups applying to run community fishing events for Gone Fishing NSW Day on 15 October 2017.Applications for small and large projects close on March 13, 2017. Applications for Gone Fishing NSW fishing club grants close on April 30, 2017. More information is available at DPI’s website or by contacting my office on 6584 0977.

Principal’s fine career nears end
Pictured: Hastings Public School Principal Grant Heaton will lock up for the last time at the end of this term
By NIKALA SIM AT the end of his career, one devoted man will walk away thinking maybe he has influenced some lives. “And not all professions give you that privilege,” says Hastings Public School Principal Grant Heaton. He said the decision to retire came in light of his 60th birthday this coming August, and changes within the NSW Department of Education. “There are great changes taking place in the department, especially the way schools are administered financially, and that training takes place next term,” he said. “It would be silly for me to undertake this training.” Interviews for a new principal for Hastings Public School will be held in March and the successful candidate will start on day one of term two. “I’ve been in schools since I was five and retirement is a different prospect because there is another world out there I haven’t really experienced.” Travel is of course on the agenda with Canada being floated as a possibility. But just the idea of being on holiday without
the school holiday crowd is novel in itself, Grant says. And the keen singer looks forward to being more involved with all-male choir Blokes Notes. Being an educator is not all consuming but it is has been the major part of his life, Grant says. “I like to think all teachers are here not because they are being paid. “I know it seems corny but they are making a difference. “We’ve got a privileged role helping guide lives and I say to all my teachers: ‘You mightn’t think you’ve got influence now but in 20 or 30 years, it will be felt’.” Former students write to Grant to say thank

you and he is touched by this. One such pupil was ARIA Music Award winner and Human Nature singer, guitarist and pianist Phil Burton. When the band played in Sydney in 2015, Grant and his wife were among the select few to be invited to spend time with them after the concert. “It was just like old times,” Grant says. Grant moved from the state’s capital and became Deputy Principal of Wauchope Public School in 1991. Principal Diana Reynolds gave him a piece of advice that, while sensible, was one he ignored, Grant says.
“When I got the job as Principal of Hastings Diana told me not to stay more than five years. “In that time you have done all the things you should have done. “But I have stayed three times that - because why would you leave a school like Hastings?” The reasons for this are the wonderful parents, great kids and great staff, Grant says. “These three are the combination that make a good school and Hastings is very fortunate to have them.” Physical achievements during the last 15 years include air-conditioners in all classrooms and the Building the Education Revolutionfunded COLA and classrooms. And interactive white boards are the greatest innovation he has seen educationally during this time. “A school is the finest example of a fair go,” Grant says. “We give every child the opportunity to do something with their innate talent - to exercise some control, some choice in their lives. “If you do this then you have done everything humanly possible as a teacher.” Grant has consciously chosen to model manners and instil school order, discipline, self respect and respect for others, within his school community. It is with a sense of accomplishment that Grant ends his lengthy career. “No school is perfect but I feel a sense of achievement in that I can hand over to my successor and say the place is not in bad shape continue the upward trajectory because you’ve got marvellous people doing marvellous things - that is the spirit that is the school.” To the 45 staff, 698 students and community of Port Macquarie, Grant says thank you. “To the parents I have known over 15 years, it has been a marvellous privilege to serve you and your children.”

Breakers bank on bumper 2017
A LOCAL junior rugby league club has a powerful ally for season 2017. Port City Breakers Junior Rugby League have proudly partnered with St George Bank Port Macquarie to deliver financial and practical support to members. This great club would not run without the help of its sponsors, club president Raymond Weatherby says. “We are lucky to have St George come on board with so much to offer for our kids.” St George Bank Port Macquarie Branch Manager Karen Hales says the financial institution is delighted to partner with the Port City Breakers Junior Rugby League this year. “We want to help start something for the season for the players and their families and there is plenty more in store,” Karen says. This will include support at the club’s home games through provision of the St George Bank marquee, merchandise and antics of mascot Happy the Dragon. Players will also sport Happy’s face on their team shirts. This support provides a boost to the junior rugby league club, which has been a part of the Port Macquarie sporting landscape for 23 years. “We have grown from 107 players to over 200 players,” Raymond says. “This year we cater for children from the age of five to 16-and-a-half years. “Girls are also welcome from the age of five to 12 years.” The club prides itself on mateship and fairness and promotes good sportsmanship with new players, Raymond says.
“Everyone is most welcome to our familyoriented and proud club.” 2016 was a great year for Port City Breakers Junior Rugby League. They were represented by every age group in the finals and had two grand final winners – the under 10s and under 12s. The 2017 season will kick off with a mini gala day at the Wood Street grounds, between Hastings River and Hibbard drives, on March 26. This is where all clubs, north and south, come together, Raymond says. “This year we have something big for the children - a carnival where you can get a pass for all rides for $10 for the day.” The President wouldn’t be able to do his job without a great committee, Raymond says. “What the committee have done for the kids this year is amazing. “Thank you to Gail McCardle, Belinda Fisher, Erin Thompson, Bruce Smith, Cassie Smith, Josh Hyde and Dave Lacey.” Two sign-up days will be held at McDonalds Settlement City for families to find out more and join the club. These dates are February 18 between 10am and 2pm, and February 24 between 4.30pm and 7.30pm. To find out more phone Gail on 0448 984 799 or Belinda on 0403 198 063.

Passionate volunteers assist a member of the Disabled Surfers Association Mid North Coast Branch, to enjoy the surf A DECADE of great community service was recently celebrated by passionate volunteers and keen surfers. The event, at Scotts Head, was the 10th anniversary of the Disabled Surfers Association (DSA) Mid North Coast Branch. Member for Cowper Luke Hartsuyker has been a long supporter of the initiative and said smiles on the faces of all those involved was evidence of the appreciation of participants. “The DSA is a great organisation that helps people with a disability get out there and have a go at surfing – no matter what their challenge in life,” Mr Hartsuyker said.

“It promotes healthy interaction, and a feeling of belonging to those in our community who are often the most isolated and vulnerable. “I am especially proud to be involved with the Mid North Coast Branch.” It was only a few years ago that the club had only an empty trailer, Mr Hartsuyker said. “But along with that there was also a lot of determination to make the club work.” The DSA now boasts five beach wheelchairs worth $5000 each and an entire suite of boards, rash shirts and everything needed to help participants enjoy a day in the surf. The success of the volunteer disability
support service has led to a new branch being established in Port Macquarie to service the Hastings. “It was great to see so many volunteers from Coffs come down to Scotts Head beach for the day, which was all about the participants getting in, having a go and especially having fun. “It’s a huge effort to put these events together and I commend all DSA volunteers for their hard work and successful fund raising efforts that have helped grow this club from strength to strength,” Mr Hartsuyker said.

Golf for a great cause A KEEN golfer from South West Rocks is urging locals to be part of a very worthwhile fundraising event. Jason Bear lost his cousin Kylie to ovarian cancer in 2012 – she was only 34 years old. This shock was followed by learning the disease, known as the silent killer, often leaves little time for treatment and a positive outcome after diagnosis. This was because ovarian cancer is commonly misdiagnosed, or the warning signs mistaken for many other illnesses, Jason says. There are four main types of ovarian cancer named after the type of cells in the ovary where the disease begins to grow. Diagnosis is not simple and is often a combination of a blood test, ultrasound, physical examination and X-ray, CT scan or MRI. Women who have undergone a hysterectomy but still have their ovaries can develop ovarian cancer. The first South West Rocks Ovarian Cancer Charity Golf Day held in 2014 raised double the target of $5000, Jason says. This has been the trend each year since with $12,500 raised in 2015 and $18,000 in 2016. As a result, the charity day has been acknowledged as one of the nation’s top three ovarian cancer fundraiser events which is a great achievement, Jason says. The charity golf day will begin with bacon and egg rolls at 7am this Friday, February 17, with a shot-gun start at 8am. A barbecue lunch will be held at the South West Rocks Country Club from 1.30pm followed by the presentation of prizes, draw of raffles and an auction. Donations can be made directly to https://ovariancancer.secure.force. com/Fundraise/AfternoonTeal2017/ SouthWestRocksCharityGolfDay1. pts on a c/b.
