A ‘Shott’ in the arm This is the “most interesting
By CHRISTINA PARKIN A BORING election campaign has suddenly become interesting. According to local community advocate John Tingle, a former NSW parliamentarian and seasoned political commentator for more than 40 years, Rob Oakeshott’s decision to contest the local seat of Cowper has awoken voters from a deep election slumber. “This is the most interesting thing that has happened since the campaign started,” he said. “Rob’s candidacy will certainly inject some spice into a campaign that has been noted for its predictability and boredom.” Love him or loathe him, at least Oakeshott’s decision to run has got the electorate talking – and those outside Cowper as well. Before the ballot paper draw, observers in the Hastings and Macleay FRONT PAGE were AD bemused by the evident lack of interest of locals in the Federal elections. • Continued Page 3

A ‘Shott’ in the arm
The recent flood rain took a heavy toll on the Killick Creek footbridge at Crescent Head
Quick fix for broken footbridge By SUE PATERICK ACCESS to the beach at Crescent Head should be restored at the end of this week, with Kempsey Shire Council constructing temporary repairs to Killick Creek footbridge. When about a quarter of the bridge’s northern section was smashed off and washed up the creek during the recent East Coast low, the village was left feeling stranded without
access to their beloved beach. Council’s bridge construction team have used material salvaged and held from other jobs to rebuild one span of the bridge’s deck and a temporary ramp down to the sand level. The temporary repairs will cost $10,000, and will provide access to the beach while a new bridge is being constructed. Council’s General Manager, David Rawlings, said there was a huge outpouring of community
sentiment and comment about the destruction caused at Crescent Head during the storm event. “We will continue discussions and evaluations with other Government agencies to try to secure funding support for the storm recovery, but it’s a fantastic result to see the value our staff and community have placed on getting Crescent Head back to its best so quickly,” Mr Rawlings said.
We’re off and racing AS the clock struck midday, the running of the draw for the pole positions on the 2016 election’s ballot papers for Cowper and Lyne began simultaneously. There were seven candidates for Cowper and six for Lyne, split into members of the major and minor parties and several independents. The numbers were thrown into a metal basket and spun, before a young woman wearing a blindfold drew out each number. There were two parts to the draw. The first draw assigned each candidate a number, while the second draw allocated them a position on the ballot paper. In Cowper, first place went to Wayne Lawrence from the Christian Democratic Party. Michael Gough, member of the Citizen Electoral Council, took out second place, with third going to The Greens’ Carol Vernon.
In fourth place was the Labor Party’s Damian Wood, while Independent Rob Oakeshott, a surprise late candidate, scored fifth place. The National Party’s Luke Hartsuyker received sixth place and Independent John Arkan, filled the seventh and final spot. For the Lyne electorate, Labor’s Peter Alley drew the top spot. Christian Democrat Party candidate, Elaine Carter drew second and Independent Rodger Riach, third place. The National’s David Gillespie received fourth place, followed by Independent Bradley Christensen for fifth and the final position fell to Green’s Julie Lyford. Your Local Independent will be approaching all candidates to briefly address the top five issues, as voted by our readers, in the coming weeks.
The Citizen Electoral Council’s candidate, Michael Gough, spinning the handle to jumble up the candidate’s numbers at last Friday’s draw for Cowper candidates
• From page 1 Your Local Independent even expressed difficulty in getting both voters and declared candidates interested in engaging in a discussion of the issues. The Residents Action Network (RAN), who are organising two candidate’s forums for Cowper and Lyne in the coming weeks, found they even had difficulty getting confirmation of attendance from several candidates. Tingle is also a committee member of the Residents Action Network (RAN) and said that prior to last Friday he had detected a distinct apathy and even a simmering feeling of resentment amongst voters. “Many have given up trying to follow the campaign and understand the ‘welter’ of promises and policies,” he said. “However, Oakeshott deserves support simply because he’s done something totally unexpected which makes it worthwhile to vote. “I’d even venture to say we now have more people interested to see how he goes, even if he doesn’t win.” Tingle described Rob Oakeshott’s return to politics as being as ‘game as Ned Kelly to have another go at it’. “This is because the local reaction to when Rob supported the Gillard Government was not exactly in his favour and it will be fascinating to see if the echo of the Gillard years will affect his chances,” he said. Tingle will chair two candidates’ forums organised by the RAN – one in Cowper and one in Lyne - to give candidates a chance to face the voters and answer questions about themselves and their policies. The RAN forum for the Lyne Electorate is to be held at the Laurieton United Services Club on Friday June 17 from 5.30-7.30pm, with all candidates agreeing to attend. The RAN forum for the Cowper Electorate will be held at the Port City Bowling Club at Port Macquarie on Wednesday, June 22, from 5.30-7.30pm. The National, Greens, Oakeshott and an independent candidate have agreed to attend, however the Labor candidate is unable to attend and will send a Labor Senate candidate. Admission is free and the audience will be given ample opportunity for questions.

THEY say ‘patience is a virtue’, oh how I wish I had been patient on the weekend! We were out on Saturday night celebrating the joint 60th birthdays of 7 lovely local ladies and it was a great night! Heaps of fun, great food and TG’s is a great venue. So, home time. Husband and I walk up to get a cab and there is a long line of others waiting. This is the beginning of my demise. I got impatient, decided to start walking, instructing my husband to pick me up once he had said cab. Things were going swimmingly and then, out of nowhere I went ‘base over apex’ landing on the bank at the end of Horton Street. I managed to pick myself up, minus my dignity, to then start hobbling along. You guessed it! Major pain in my right foot. Thank you God that I had firm fitting boots on or it would have been a lot worse. Husband turns up in the cab 5 minutes later and we get home. Not without dragging my foot up the steep incline of the driveway and off to bed we go! Sunday morning and I’m in agony! Off to the hospital. Thanks to the staff; in and out in two hours; strapped up and no break - a major sprain! The moral of the story? If you have the opportunity to exercise patience, do it, or suffer the consequences like me and end up being the ‘patient’!

These people helped and did a lot to make Port Macquarie what it is today and should be remembered accordingly. One would like to think that something will be done to re-engrave the current headstones and find the location of the missing ones and put headstones on them also.
Historical Society that they have received a few comments over the condition of the cemetery from tourists. It’s a shame that so many people who are buried there have no headstones at all which must be a disappointment to the ancestors that may still live in the area.
I am interested in my family history and people like me go around cemeteries and it is very disappointing to find a heritage/historical cemetery with headstones with no names on them. Kathleen Bailey-Ganner Bunbury WA

Compare with despair TWO hundred thousand immigrants a year (including refugees) is an influx Australia cannot fiscally afford. The first political party that commits to stopping all immigration for the next three years gets my vote. No babble or maybe, but a straightout commitment. Bringing spending under control; what a joke, the projected expenditure of $50 billion towards submarines that aren’t even designed yet and will not be delivered until 2030 beggars belief. This appears to be supported by both major parties, and is nothing short of irresponsible - let alone ‘pork barrelling’ at its best.
Another rah, rah, rah moment, which treats the voters as fools. Jobs and growth. Wonderful buzz words. What do they mean? I have not seen or read any definition of either of these words, from any of the major parties. The electorate is disillusioned enough without wasting space and discussion around these words. I consider better words would have been ‘progress’ and ‘development’, but obviously the words currently being used can mean anything and hide a multitude of sins, prior to, and for, whoever wins the election. Voters who have lived through the past 70 or so years appear to be very disillusioned by all parties and candidates.

Expensive make-over I BELIEVE that the Kempsey ratepayers are being treated with contempt. Contempt, when we learn about the idea that Council will spend $29,000 on 34 metres of roadway in which
mayor Liz Campbell resides. This has been earmarked for 2016, and equates to nearly a thousand dollars a metre. How many times have ratepayers been told that there no funds available, or that because there are is low housing density, that road maintenance is not justified. There would only be two or three homes in this street, and yet it is to be upgraded. This mayor needs to understand the community’s growing dissatisfaction. Smith Street in the CBD of Kempsey is not the success that she wants people to believe. There doesn’t seem to be the people shopping in Smith Street that there should be after this expensive makeover. Bruce J Haywood Address supplied

Thumbs Down TO Kempsey Council for letting the verges in Middleton Street and West Street become so overgrown and littered with rubbish, street signs, glass bottles etc. Despite numerous requests, nothing has been done to address the problem. Council needs to lead by example, show some pride in the area and overcome the pervading sense of dereliction and neglect caused by their lack of action. It would cost an insignificant amount of money in comparison with other proposed projects, yet would have instant positive results.
Thumbs Up OUR city war memorial is back home in its rightful place in the centre of town! After 62 years of attending Dawn Service on Anzac Day, last April 25, the ground was dry under foot. Also, there was shelter under shop awnings for the aged veterans and the rest of us paying our respects.

TAFE students get real answers By CHRISTINA PARKIN
A NSW State Government Minister’s visit is not the usual type of event that might see students engaged in articulate dialogue with a politician. North Coast TAFE students had the opportunity to pose questions that were of most concern to them. The questions included concerns around the continuation of fee support for disadvantaged and disabled students, TAFE courses and the future of TAFE and smaller campuses. Many students shared stories of disadvantage and challenged lives which have been changed for the better with access to education and training through North Coast TAFE. “I’ve come out of a small business and a community just like everyone else,” stated John Barilaro, Member for Monaro and the Minister for Regional Development, Skills and Small Business. “The public is sick of career politicians – if I can’t speak from my heart rather than a script, then I shouldn’t be a politician.” John Barilaro, visited the Port Macquarie Campus of North Coast TAFE last Friday
From left, North Coast TAFE student Michael Daley, Minister Barilaro, Ms Elizabeth McGregor, Institute Director for North Coast TAFE and Mrs Leslie Williams, State MP for Port Macquarie during the minister’s visit to the Port Macquarie campus after announcing a $5 million upgrade for Port Macquarie Airport. “I hate the term ‘second chance’ education that often defines TAFE training,” added Mr Barilaro. “We need to stop that type of messaging and identify that TAFE is part of the diversity of choices available to develop a workforce. “We don’t always get it right, but the NSW Government has a clear vision for TAFE – jobs are changing and we need to evolve with that.” Mr Barilaro explained that the state government wanted TAFE to have a greater reach than the traditional ‘bricks and mortar’ – more online, on-the-job, remote assessment technologies and complimented North Coast
TAFE for leading the state in these directions. “The government is driven to find a balance, as no-one wants to pay more taxes,” Mr Barilaro continued. “We are committed to assist those who can least afford the fees – the disadvantaged, Aboriginal, disabled, domestic violence affected – but as a government we need to invest more in those areas where there are job gaps, such as aged care and the impending implementation of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).” North Coast TAFE Community Welfare Head Teacher, Ms Jodie Sherrin, said: “It was great to see my students using the opportunity to speak frankly with a government minister.
“I’m really proud of how they posed questions of concern and Mr Barilaro responded very well to the students to assure them that the government is not divesting but investing in alternate areas.” Two students of the Certificate IV in Mental Health Peer Support, Jennifer Owen and Jade Jones, were particularly concerned about the continuation of the course and were very happy to hear the minister affirm that the government would continue to support the course to continue. Ms Owen praised Mr Barilaro for being so easy to talk to in a public forum and told him directly: “You made me feel a lot more comfortable about the whole idea that I could have something meaningful to say to a politician. Thank you.”

‘Chase your dreams’, urges Foxx
what anyone else thinks. If you want to do it, do it.
“
By LIZZIE McLEOD ONE of Australia’s hottest DJ talents, Kate Foxx, pictured, has a simple message for passionate young local musicians. ‘Chase your dreams!’ Foxx, from Melbourne, is coming to Port Macquarie for the July 2 Winter Intensive White Wonderland Party and spoke exclusively with Your Local Independent about how she pursued her dream of becoming a DJ. “I have always been into music and eventually I just had to do it and I thought why not, take the chance,” said Foxx. The young female DJ worked hard for years before she earned the opportunity to headline concerts, work with ‘Bombs Away’, release her own mixes, and perform around Australia. “I started learning and getting local gigs on a Sunday,” explained Foxx. “It’s something that I have always loved to do. It was just about having the courage to have a real crack at it.” Foxx knows that being a female in the DJ industry can sometimes be tough, however, she has overcome the bias against female performers and now nothing stands in her way. “Being a female artist in this industry has its pros and cons,” said Foxx. “There are a lot more males than females so people will assume you are just getting gigs for appearances rather
than actual talent. It’s bizarre that people think that a female can’t DJ.” Foxx is excited to headline at the Winter Intensive concert and says she can’t wait to see the unique cultural music scene of Port Macquarie. “I haven’t been to Port Macquarie before, but I’m really excited about performing there. It sounds like a great event,” she said. “I really, really like the regional gigs. I actually have more fun at them. The audience is just so much more appreciative.”

Foxx has been working hard at her craft for years and urges anyone with a passion, to follow it through. “Firstly, don’t worry about what anyone else thinks,” Foxx said. “If you want to do it, do it. “Forget about anything else, just start learning. There’s Youtube tutorials and plenty of Apps to learn how to DJ. Music theory is a great thing to start learning too. But just go for it. If you want anything in life, you will find a way.” The Winter Intensive party will kick off with 11 local DJs as well as Foxx, all performing in
true White Wonderland style, as the whole room will be filled with artificial snow. The event will be held at the Port Macquarie Hotel on Saturday July 2 from 9pm. Tickets are just $20 and can be purchased online or at the door. Previous Intensive parties have completely sold out so to avoid this, purchase your tickets online from oztix.com.au and receive VIP entry. People are urged to dress in white. Storms unleash monster wave A WAVE measuring more than 17 meters in height has smashed the existing NSW record, during the recent devastating coastal storms. Strong winds from the intense low pressure cell created the monster 17.7 metre wave, which was recorded off the south coast near Eden at 4.30am on Monday, June 6. The wave easily eclipsed the previous record set in April 2015, when Sydney’s WaveRider buoy recorded a 14.9 metre wave – the largest since measurements began in the early 1970s. For the past five decades WaveRider buoys operated by Manly Hydraulics Laboratory have been collecting wave data several kilometres offshore in Sydney, Byron Bay, Coffs Harbour, Crowdy Head, Port Kembla, Batemans Bay and Eden. The current network of seven buoys sends data by radio to nearby onshore recording stations with information about the height, energy, direction and length of time between

waves. Throughout the storms the Manly Hydraulics Laboratory was able to provide local councils and other State emergency agencies with reliable and site specific nearshore wave conditions and expected coastal hazards along the entire NSW coast exacerbated by coinciding king tides and heavy rainfall. This was achieved through the new State Wide Nearshore Wave Transformation Toolkit that has become a popular daily resource for surfers, divers, mariners and fishermen, as well as for community and commercial purposes including marine and transport operations, tourism and lifesaving. Manly Hydraulics Laboratory is now working with other agencies re-analysing this database with plans to further update the design of wave climate information. Funding boost for local airport
By SUE PATERICK
PORT Macquarie Airport has landed $5 million that will accommodate increased visitor numbers and stimulate the local regional economy for the years to come. Minster for Regional Development, John Barilaro, and Member for Port Macquarie, Leslie Williams, announced the new upgrades at Port Macquarie Airport at a recent visit. “The $5 million will go towards the upgrade of the airport terminal building including internal baggage claim carousel and additional passenger amenities,” Mrs Williams said. “This funding is in addition to the $1.8 million investment in Lord Howe Island as part of round 1. “I am pleased to see the continued investment being made across the regions by the NSW Government to secure new opportunities for economic growth and job creation.” Mr Barilaro said the investment to develop regional airports is an important part of the work to support regional communities and grow the regional visitor economy in NSW. “The NSW Government will continue to invest in regional infrastructure to unlock new economic growth and job creation opportunities in regional NSW,” Mr Barilaro said. “Airports are a key entry point for regional communities, helping channel business and tourism spending and assisting health and emergency services. “This funding for regional airports sits alongside our other funding programs to build the regional NSW economy, including through fixing up mobile phone black spots, supporting infrastructure projects in mining-affected communities and diversifying the MurrayDarling economy. TO celebrate the diversity of the Macleay Valley’s spirit, culture, lifestyle and experiences, preparations for the 2016 Macleay River Festival are well underway. In the language of the traditional owners, the Dunghutti nation, the festival’s essence can be summed up with three words; ‘Guwiny Guthun Bitha’ or ‘Spirit Belong to the River’. As river and waterway ecology is one of this year’s themes, Kempsey Shire Council staff have been busy collecting plastic bottle tops and containers to build into artworks. Annabel Lines, Council’s Community Project Officer, said plastic rubbish injured our native aquatic animals, and she hoped the recycled artworks would bring into focus the amount of plastic waste we generated. “The artworks will also contribute to making something bright and colourful for the Festival,” she added. To help make the spring festival even more memorable, Council is asking for the community’s help in collecting clean plastic lids and tops and it asks residents to set up collection points at their home, office or business. Once a large amount of lids and tops has been amassed, it can be dropped off at Council’s Customer Services Centre or at the Kempsey Shire Library. According to Ms Lines, it will either be artists working with school groups or artists alone who create the sculptures. “As it is a community event, we attempt to negotiate what people would like to see happen, how they would like to get involved, and what they would like to contribute,” she said. “We hope this will all be finalised by the end of this month.” The recycled art sculptures are just one of the many art installations that will be exhibited
Waste not want not, a mound of plastic lids that will be made into artworks for this year’s Macleay River Festival during the festival’s full-day event. While planning for the final program is still underway, a collection of old compact discs may be used to create floating sculptures on the river and local and specialist artists will be asked to share their artworks or visual performances. As well as installations on the river and riverbank, live art will be made on the day. Caravana Sun are the headline music act, but a raft of other bands and musos from the region will also be performing. There will also be workshops for people to participate in, but these are also yet to be finalised. “It’s about interacting with each other and
having an experience,” Ms Lines said. The Macleay River Festival is a familyfriendly, community event open to all ages and it will be held at Riverside Park, Kempsey on Saturday, September 24. To keep up to date with festival plans and ways to get involved, visit the Macleay River Festival website on www. macleayriverfestival.com.au or check out its Facebook page. Construction pathways key to success IT’S great to see the local building and construction industry steaming ahead at the moment. Most building sites, commercial or residential, are a buzz of activity. My stand-out reflection on all of this is that we should not be tempted to relax during these good times but rather, use them to plan ahead for those inevitable poorer times during which things become a bit tougher. Our building and construction industry is a very good example of a sector coming to grips with its future. Not content to rest on its laurels, representatives from the industry meet regularly with senior planning and economic development staff and also several councillors, to discuss maximising economic opportunities and an

efficient and effective business environment. One of the recent outcomes of this process has seen the formation of a sub-group aimed at giving students and their careers advisors a practical understanding of the numerous, good quality employment opportunities available within the industry. Recently at the 2016 Mid North Coast Careers Market, more than 20 industry representatives
from architecture, building, design, engineering, construction project management, town planning and the surveying sectors met with students to discuss career opportunities. I understand there were some excellent outcomes. The building and construction industry is Port Macquarie/Hastings’ fourth largest economic sector, worth around $700million per annum in turnover. Maintaining, and indeed growing, this contribution, is of vital importance to our economy, particularly as the vast majority of all building and construction firms in the area are family owned and employ less than five people. I CAME across a list of the 50 or 100 towns around the world with the dirtiest names. I can’t tell you about them, however, because I expect some of the editors involved in this column wouldn’t allow it. But I did come across a Texan town, not on the list, with the name ‘Comfort’. This little town was started by Germans who wanted to escape some of the horrors, or at least difficulties, they had encountered. It started out with another name, which I could not pronounce, but the name was changed to ‘Camp Comfort’. I don’t know why, but I suspect the founders of this town felt comfortable, and safe, in their new surroundings, even though Comfort has had its ups and downs over the years. The word ‘comfort’ has had its ups and downs also. When it started, one of its meanings was to give aid to the enemy, and this is still one of its meanings – ‘give comfort to the enemy’. It was used in the context of encouraging, or giving support to, troops. Some dictionaries say ‘obsolete’. That Bible fellow Wyclif talked about comforting ‘with nails’. The word came from the French ‘conforter’ from the Latin ‘confortare’ (note the n instead of m). When it reached English the n was changed to m.If I knew why, I would tell you. But I do believe the ‘com’ means something like ‘with’ and the ‘fort’ can still be traced to those old westerns we used to watch as teenagers on Saturday afternoons. Why don’t they show good old westerns, instead of cooking competitions, on television anymore? Later the word ‘comfort’ referred to comforting people who thought evil thoughts. In 1521 J Longland commented ‘comfortuyng erronyous persons in their opynyons’. I suggest the word ‘erronyous’ indicates what Longland thought of the ‘opynyons’. Then the word changed to a meaning similar to ‘refreshing’, while retaining the meaning of giving comfort to the enemy.

continuously attract a new breed of young people through apprenticeships, mentoring and pathways programs. It was really pleasing to see North Coast TAFE, Mid Coast Connect and Verto Training also actively involved in our stand at the Careers Market. I understand that the Master Builders Association of NSW has also displayed some strong interest in this impressive collaboration. Industry driven partnerships bode well for the future as the soundness of this sector has an important bearing on the economy - not only residential, but also well planned and constructed health care facilities, schools, roads and other important infrastructure significant to our prosperity and wellbeing.
LAURIE BARBER
On the way it meant to strengthen the body, or to refresh. Then it means to relieve mental distress, or to console. William Shakespeare in 1600 suggested: “Live a little, comfort a little, cheere thy self a little”. Finally, the word came around to the meaning we give it today, that is to make comfortable, or to allay physical discomfort. The Collins dictionary says comfort means ‘the state of being physically relaxed’ and it goes on to say ‘a style of life that is pleasant and in which you have enough money to live on without financial problems’. That rules out most of us. Now even homes offer all ‘modern comforts’. This is a good example of words changing, even slightly, from their original intention. Associated words include ‘comfortable’. I thought about ‘cold comfort’. This is where words of comfort mean very little. Think of the person who has lost his job but friends tell him the economy is about to pick up. But I keep thinking about the towns with the dirtiest names. I wish I could tell you about some of them, but I know the editor wouldn’t approve. But just imagine if you told your friends you lived in Horneytown, just down the road from Climax, or not that far from Intercourse or Hookersville. They are all in the United States, if you are interested. Anus is in France. There’s another town in Austria that I can’t tell you about, even though I would like to. lauriebarber.com; lbword@midcoast.com.au

Kempsey Mayor, Liz Campbell, and Kempsey Shire Council’s Director of Infrastructure Services, Robert Scott, cutting the ribbon to open the new elevated boardwalk at South West Rocks, with Council’s Manager of Operations, Tony Green, Councillor Anna Shields, Construction Team Leader, Adam Betts, Works Coordinator, Dan Powick, Bridge carpenter, Josh Robinson, labourer Jacob Mainey, trainee Josh McFarland and Technical Support Officer, Kim Buckingham.
View to natural power By SUE PATERICK
JUST before the new elevated boardwalk at South West Rocks (SWR) was officially opened recently, a jet ski roared over the chunky Back Creek bar taking a brave surfer out to ride huge waves breaking into the Macleay River mouth. As Kempsey Mayor Liz Campbell said, watching the power of the ocean from the boardwalk felt as if you were standing on a cruise ship. “You really don’t understand how wonderful and unobstructed the view is,” she added. Councillor Campbell thought the joy on people’s faces said it all. Even before the ribbon was cut, smiling folks were out with their scooters, dogs and
cameras to take advantage of the new boardwalk and the sunshine. SWR local, Geoff Gardiner, thought the boardwalk was excellent and gave a great vantage point for fisherman to check out conditions on Back Creek Bar. He said when the seas were big during the East Coast low jet skis were towing in surfers at Horseshoe Bay and the boardwalk was lined with people watching the action. Shirley Lyell, also from SWR, thought the boardwalk was fantastic. “I will be able to come down on my scooter,” she said, beaming. “And being so close to the ocean is great for taking photographs.” According to Councillor Anna Shields, who
also attended the official opening, the new boardwalk was part of Council’s revised plan of management to beautify Horseshoe Bay. The plan began with revamping the bay’s iconic flagstaff. The boardwalk was the second phase and the third will be upgrading the current playground. Work will begin in October this year. Councillor Shields said the new playground will be much bigger, about 300 square metres, and will border existing cement paths. “There will be a daybed, platforms to sit on, nature-based play equipment and water-based play,” she explained. “It will be beautiful.” The new boardwalk does not have a name.

This is invaluable to the wellbeing of the residents of Garden Village. The ladies in the Craft Group donated children’s woollens to the Mid North Coast Refugee Support Group which were sent to Newcastle to be distributed to children displaced by war in Syria. Become a blood donor and save lives B POSITIVE for blood donation: I urge locals to make an appointment to give blood during National Blood Donor Week June 12-19. This is the week to celebrate this country’s 495,000 life-saving blood donors. National Blood Donor Week is the perfect time to proudly tell the world that you are a donor or a supporter and to encourage others to donate. People of all walks of life need blood products. Some need it to get them through a serious event in their lives, like cancer or a dangerous pregnancy. Others have medical conditions which mean they need blood products regularly to stay alive or be healthy. Most people are able to give blood if they feel fit and healthy, are aged between 16 and 70, and weigh over 50kg. Every blood donation can possibly save up to

Grant ensures garden blooms THE COWPER REPORT With Luke Hartsuyker
Federal Member for Cowper
PORT Macquarie is steeped in history, from its background as a penal colony in the 1800s when it was a centre for sugar cane production, an important fishing port and navigation point for ships. Lake Innes House and Tacking Point Lighthouse attest to this rich history. While it may be less than 60 years ago, another Port Macquarie landmark emerged in the 1950s which has drawn national and international interest over the decades. Mrs York’s Garden overlooking Town Beach off Grant Street is a fascinating part of more recent Port Macquarie history. Amy Bertha York established the stunning gardens from a section of Port Macquarie’s foreshore wasteland covered in lantana and kikuyu in the 1950s. Mrs York was warned it would fail, given its poor soil and exposure to the ocean, but the renowned gardener was unfazed and went on to transform the area into terraced garden beds, a pond and waterfall, walkways, seats and exotics plants and trees. People from around the world then sent seeds or cuttings of their favourite plants and even trees to be planted at the oceanfront gardens. Mrs York’s Garden has since drawn tourists and interest from gardening enthusiasts from around the world and served as a popular picnic spot for a generation of local residents. I recently met some of the dedicated Port Macquarie volunteers, including Dianne Davison and Carol Smallman, who are breathing life back into Mrs York’s Garden, which had become unruly and overgrown over the years. To assist the work of Mrs York’s Garden volunteers the Federal Government has awarded the group a $4,850 Volunteer Grants for reimbursement of fuel, volunteer training costs, first aid equipment, landscaping and outdoor equipment. As a community we need thank this dedicated band of volunteers which first came together in 2014 through Facebook connections. One of those volunteer’s in Mrs York’s granddaughter, Glenys Pearson. They now descend on the site most weeks, and with the support of Port Macquarie-Hastings Council, they have cleared tonnes of overgrowth and planted hundreds of native plants and trees. Their dedication is a testament to their love of gardening, but also their desire to keep a quaint piece of Port Macquarie history alive, for generations to come. Almost five decades after the Port Macquarie Mayor declared Mrs York’s Garden officially open; this pocket of history is thriving.

Despite an extensive range of fresh quality meats – Willawarrin Pork, Cowra lambs and locally sourced beef – it is the huge variety of sausages and deli goods that will astound you. Kurt, with the help of Dirk and Marika, has retained the famous range of the unique Rudi’s German smallgoods and sausages from the Manning – salamis, berliner, kranskis, rookwurst, weisswurst, bratwurst and - ‘beer sticks’ - that
need no further explanation. Added to the huge range of sausages, are the delicious hams and bacon products, cooked and cured on site. Now is the perfect time to enjoy thick soups with chunky bits of ham from bacon bones or ham hocks. Kiara follows in revered footsteps KIARA Tonning has been awarded this year’s Jessie Street Encouragement Award. As part of her prize, the Year 10 student from Hastings College Port Macquarie was invited to the recent annual Jessie Street Luncheon at Parliament House in Sydney. A spokesperson for the Trust said Kiara was an outstanding candidate for the award. She is the junior president of the Aboriginal Educational Consultative Group and has been continually involved in many school, community, and Indigenous projects. “This is an Encouragement Award for an Indigenous student at the Hastings College Port Macquarie Campus, so it is selected by the Indigenous Liaison Officer Angela Gordon (a teacher at the college),” explained the spokesperson. “She chooses who is worthy of the Encouragement Award by their participation in particular school activities. “Kiara is an outstanding student from Year 10 who has been involved in school committees and activities and was then given the prize, which was a trip to Sydney to attend a luncheon at the Parliament House for the Jessie Street Trust.” The luncheon includes speakers that share stories of past and present annual grant winners. This year’s guest speaker was Emeritus Professor Gillian Triggs. The luncheon is a great opportunity for young Aboriginal women to take part in and many participants leave the event feeling inspired and determined to pursue their passions in school and the community. “Kiara is a hard-working student who is proud and willing to participate in anything linking to her Aboriginality,” the Trust spokesperson said. “She is not only a student leader, but also a great ambassador for Aboriginal young women.” The award is named in honour of Jessie Street (1889-1970), who was a key figure in Australian political life for over 50 years. Street spent her life fighting for what meant most to her - equal rights and justice for all, elimination of all forms of discrimination, and world peace and disarmament. She believed especially in Indigenous rights. She encouraged the formation of a national organisation in support of Aboriginal advancement and working on gaining an amendment to the Australian Constitution that would remove discriminatory references to Aborigines. These changes were carried through in the 1967 referendum. In 1989, on what would have been her 100th birthday, a the first Jessie Street Luncheon was held in the NSW Parliamentary Dining Room. Such was the response that the luncheon is held annually, a trust was formed and an annual grant is awarded to an organization that is involved in work around Jessie’s interests. The 2016 grant was awarded to the Refugee Council of Australia. This grant will go towards forwarding alternative and more humane policies relating to people seeking asylum in Australia. For more information visit the Jessie Street Trust website at: www.jessiestreettrust.org.au

Face fear, just do it! “
I’ll be forever grateful and promise to come back for my six monthly check-up.
“
By SANDY MACKENZIE MANY of us have some inherent fear of dentists. I’m no different and last December I was in a situation where I had no choice but to seek advice from a dentist. One minute I’m eating a chicken sandwich, the next minute I’m missing a part of a front tooth! And so my journey began. Where did the fear come from in the first place? Bad experiences with a dental nurse at primary school in NZ. I have always referred to her as a witch! She used an old drill that she pumped with her foot and I’m positive if she didn’t like you she would make the process as slow and painful as possible. Thankfully I had to commence orthodontic treatment from age 8 so I never went back to her for anything. And once the orthodontist had finished ripping out eight teeth to straighten them I have only set foot in a dental surgery to have other teeth extracted as necessary. So I took the plunge and went off to the Dentist. I chose Sagnik Sengupta at Port Smiles and he ascertained that I had major problems. The reason I had broken the front tooth? I had ‘H’ fractures in both front teeth and it was only a matter of time before the other one went – yikes! I was looking down the barrel of looking like some lunatic from the Appalachian Mountains! Bring on the duelling banjos! X-rays also revealed that I had a rumbling abscess in another tooth, which was more than likely the cause of constant ear infections I have had for over 20 years! It just kept getting better! First job, temporarily fill the front tooth, no more red wine, nuts or eating meat off the bone. Groan! Next up, extract tooth and drain the abscess. Not my idea of fun the week before Christmas, but I have to say, the quickest and least painful extraction I have ever experienced
Above is ‘before’ and below is ‘after’ I faced and defeated my dental phobia
and I was starting to feel more confidence in the procedures that I was yet to endure. From February until two weeks ago the process has been long on my part but well worth it. I’ve had moulds taken of my mouth more times than I care to remember. I have had fillings replaced, teeth whitened and gagged on my fair share of mouth washes and plates of gelatinous goo that makes the moulds. And I have survived! The worst thing I had to endure was the filing/drilling down of my front teeth in preparation for the temporary crowns. The noise is horrendous and that is the worst of it! A month
later I was back in the chair for the permanent Full Crowns - all four front top teeth. In my mind I was worked up thinking I was in for more of the drilling/filing of those teeth, to be pleasantly surprised! Within 35 minutes I was walking out with a set of ‘pearly whites’ that I could never have imagined. Amazing! So a massive thank you to Sagnik and team at Port Smiles. Your professionalism, great chairside manner and sense of humour got me through one of the scariest times in my life. I’ll be forever grateful and promise to come back for my six monthly check-up. You have cured me of my dental phobia!

Tomatoes ease a wee problem
GETTING up time after time to go to the bathroom at night is a major issue for many men and their relationships. A new way of tackling an embarrassing problem suffered by 90% of men as they get older has been revealed in a recent published research paper that could transform the lives of millions. Doctors reviewing 67 research studies from around the world have found that a nutrient called lycopene, which gives tomatoes their red colour, is a potentially effective treatment for the peeing problems suffered by many. As they age, most men suffer an unexplained expansion of the prostate, the gland which makes semen and which is wrapped around the urinary tract. The prostate constricts the tube and may block it altogether causing a condition called benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH), which means peeing is slow, difficult or impossible. Professor Hiten Patel, an expert in men’s health from the University of Tromso in Norway, who is also a clinical senior lecturer at Bart’s and the Royal London Hospital, led the team which reviewed the research, now published in the journal, Oncology and Cancer Case Reports. “We knew lycopene seems to slow down the development of prostate cancer, but now it seems it can slow down the enlargement of the prostate and development of BPH as well,” he said.

Enterta nment WEEKLY
Trio of choirs to perform THREE community choirs will get together for an evening of music, fun and friendship at the ‘Kala Rava and Friends’ concert on Tuesday, June 21 at 7pm at the Tacking Point Public School Hall, Bangalay Drive, Port Macquarie. The event will be hosted by Kala Rava, a vibrant community choir based at the Conservatorium Mid North Coast. The group has been together for just over a year, under the leadership of Marie van Gend, and now boasts over 50 members. They meet weekly, on Tuesday nights, at the Conservatorium and welcome any adults who want to join. They tackle a wide range of quite challenging music and will be performing a variety of pieces, ranging from the Beetles to a Zulu protest song. Kala Rava have invited two other local choirs to join them in this concert. Blokes Notes is well known in the Hastings community. A men-only choir, it has entertained a myriad of service groups, performed in fundraisers such
as the Prostate Night and recently starred at the Kendall Music Night. The blokes are led by Leanne Johnson, and are strongly influenced by the music and performance style of the Spooky Men’s Chorale. They are always entertaining. This ‘Kala Rava and Friends’ concert will be the first performance for the newly formed ‘Absolutely Everybody’ choir, from the School of Hard Knocks, Port Macquarie. The choir welcomes members of our community who have experienced adversity or disadvantage, be it health, housing, isolation or disability. It models itself on the Choir of Hard Knocks in Melbourne and is supported by Jonathan Welch and the School of Hard Knocks. The concert will be followed by a supper which everyone is welcome to share. Entry to this event is via donation. Proceeds will go to the School of Hard Knocks, Port Macquarie. For enquiries, contact Marie van Gend at marievangend@gmail.com
HISTORY is repeating, as the Glasshouse celebrates the genius of the late King of Pop – Michael Jackson. Dantanio will perform songs such as ABC, Ben, Smooth Criminal, Beat It, and many more,
but not without the help of a band of exceptional musicians, dancers, and authentic costumes. This is a show any Michael Jackson fan will not want to miss. ‘Mobiles’ upgraded THE Wauchope Preschool Kindergarten is about to undergo a refurbishment following a successful application for Federal funding. Through the week I announced $5,000 in funding under the Coalition Government’s Stronger Communities program to assist Wauchope Preschool Kindergarten undergo an $11,000 refurbishment of its exterior. Wauchope Preschool Kindergarten has been operating from the same building for over 40 years. The purpose of the project is to upgrade the facade of the preschool by rendering and painting the old brickwork across the front entry way, putting in place new signage and planting new foliage in the children’s playground. Also through the week I announced that the Mount Seaview area will receive funding for improved mobile phone coverage if the Coalition is re-elected as part of an additional $60 million commitment to extend the successful Mobile Black Spot Program. Following lengthy consultation, a new mobile base station at Mount Seaview has been identified that will be prioritised for funding and will bring a much-needed boost to mobile coverage, providing benefits to

emergency service operators, businesses, residents and motorists using the Oxley Highway. We have selected this area of the electorate because they have been overlooked by mobile network operators due to commercial factors. A re-elected coalition government will immediately invite mobile network operators to bid for this new funding to provide coverage in the Mount Seaview area at the earliest opportunity. The Coalition Government understands the importance of mobile coverage in regional and remote areas of Australia. That is why we are committing an additional $60 million on top of the $160 million already invested in mobile black spots, bringing the coalition’s total investment to $220 million. The Coalition is committed to improving mobile coverage along major transport routes, in small communities, as well as addressing unique mobile coverage problems such as areas with high seasonal demand.

Port hosts its first Big Blast INDOOR cricketers from across the state will converge on Port Macquarie for the ‘Big Blast Indoors’(BBI) this weekend (June 18-19) as they bat, bowl and field during two days of intense competition for Round 2 of the 2016 BBI Country NSW Indoor Cricket Championships. The mid north coast region will host teams from country New South Wales, including Dubbo, Coffs Harbour, Inverell, Glen Innes, Maitland, Charlestown and of course the ‘Mid
North Coast Mavericks’, combining players from Port Macquarie, Macleay and Wingham. The Ark Sports Centre, on Lake Road, will host the championships for the first time and are keen to test the facility’s systems and umpires. It will also provide another stepping stone for the area leading in to the Trans-Tasman Indoor Cricket Championships between Australia and New Zealand which will also be held in Port Macquarie in September.
A fun way to fitness By CHRISTINA PARKIN
ARRIVING first thing in the morning at Hastings Primary School, nestled in a tropical bush environment, I was greeted by hundreds of kids on the move. In 2008 all the sub-tropical vegetation was planted by the students and parents from the school community. Smaller gums were specifically chosen as food trees for the koalas. Contacts with the environment group offered relevant vegetation and fauna signage which were being discarded from the Kooloonbung Creek reserve. These signs were repositioned along the track as a learning tool. Joining the throng, I completed a special one kilometre track, winding its way among rainforest trees and shrubs, down small gullies, through various inclines and over a little footbridge, alive with the chatter of children. “This is what I love – all these parents getting active with their kids,” said Grant Heaton, Principal of Hastings Public School. One mother, Mel Partington, attends
the ‘Kilometre Club’ three mornings a week with her children Molly (11) and Macy (8) before she goes to work. “It’s a good way to get the students moving, especially in winter and to prepare them for the cross country,” said Mrs Partington. “It also helps get the kids fit for winter sport and also helps me sleep well at night.” The ‘Kilometre Club’ runs every day for five weeks during Terms 2 and 3. The children can run as many circuits as they can manage in the thirty minutes from 8.20am. Each circuit of one kilometre is recorded on a card presented by the student to a busy team of mums – Simone Berry, Lisa Carter and Kristy Burt - who volunteer their time to record the circuits. Once 42 circuits have been completed, the runner is given a ‘marathon runner’ status. Mel Cockshutt, a seasoned marathon runner in her own right, says that it is a great way to spend quality time with her third child, James.

Sadly after a long illness Gordon Hume passed away last week. Gordon was a well-respected and much liked member of our club. For many years, in his capacity as a Salvation Army Officer, he helped to organize the Anzac Day Services at the club. He hasn’t bowled for many years but used to drive the Dahlsford bus bringing their bowlers to the club. On Friday nights, he was a familiar figure at the club coming round to collect money for the Salvation Army and must have raised hundreds of dollars over the years. He will be fondly remembered by many people and our sympathy goes out to his family for their loss.

Origin plays big role in Rd 15 STATE of Origin will have a major bearing on Round 15 NRL tips. With SOR Game 2 next Wednesday night, there will be just four NRL games this weekend and some of the teams that are playing will be handicapped with players out on Origin duty. But before we launch into this weekend and SOR, how did you fare last weekend? Those who follow Your Local Independent’s (YLI) tips had a reasonable round with five out of seven. The biggest frustration for the tipster are teams who are inconsistent, or those who have the cattle, but for some reason are playing below par. The Rabbitohs tick both of those boxes. Something must be happening behind the scenes at Souths because they are playing nowhere near their potential. Last weekend they were touched-up by the Wests Tigers. Now although the Tigers have a roster that can cause an upset, they should not have been in the same race as the Rabbitohs. Although Souths are almost everyone’s ‘second team’ it will be difficult to tip them unless they have a sudden and dramatic on-field change. The Sharks on the other hand proved on Monday night that they really are the ‘real deal’. Toppling the Cowboys was a tough ask and now have proven to tipsters that they sit alongside the Storm, Broncos and Cows as ‘definites’ when at full strength. OK, let’s have a look at this weekend and good luck with whoever you like for Origin 2: Rabbitohs v Eels (Friday, June 17, 7.50pm, ANZ Stadium, Sydney): The mis-firing Rabbits will be without a couple of their headliners –
Inglis and Reynolds. Meanwhile the Eels will run on without Jennings. Both these teams have been below their best in recent weeks, but on current form and with the Origin ‘outage’ the bookies and YLI will lean towards the Eels. • Your Local Independent tips: Eels Dragons v Storm (Saturday, June 18, 7.30pm, WIN Stadium, Wollongong): Here’s where the Origin selection really comes into play. The Storm will be without their playmakers Cronk and Smith. The Dragons have been a little hot and cold, however this is a game they will be marking down as a real ‘w’ chance. They are also at their Wollongong home. • Your Local Independent tips: Dragons Warriors v Roosters (Sunday, June 19, 4pm, Mt Smart Stadium, Auckland): After leaving tipsters cold during the opening rounds, the Warriors have finally begun to find focus.

They will be without Jacob Lillyman, however backup forward power has never been a problem for the NZers. They are at home and have belief. Meanwhile the Roosters will be reeling after being hammered by the Storm and return without Origin’s Ferguson and Guerra. • Your Local Independent tips: Warriors Titans v Sea Eagles (Monday, June 20, 7pm, Cbus Stadium, Gold Coast): All this weekend’s games are a toss of the coin and this one is no different. The Titans lose Greg Bird to Origin, while Manly will be without Dylan Walker for the same reason. The bookies have the Titans as early favourites and they are at home. The only concern for tipsters is that the Titans have a happy knack of upsetting big name teams, but then losing to sides that they are expected to beat. • Your Local Independent tips: Titans Qld v NSW (Wednesday, June 22, 8pm,

Suncorp Stadium, Brisbane): Let’s hope we have a dry track and a fast open game. Origin 1 was just the opposite to that, and while it was a classic Origin battle we don’t need more of the same. The big question is: Will NSW’s brilliance in attack be too much for the Maroons? The Blues certainly looked better when they attempted to attack in game one. However Qld looked strangely dysfunctional when they had the ball in that game. Too little has been made of Cronk’s ankle injury. This was no ‘Red Herring’. Cronk played wounded and his kicking game and general play suffered. He will be better in Game Two and the Maroon Machine will be better oiled. However the biggest factor is Inglis. He has been quiet all year and Origin One wasn’t an exception. Expect that to change next Wednesday. • Your Local Independent tips: Qld
