Kempsey flight school a real concern I AM writing out of concern for the proposed development of the Kempsey airport to house a large pilot training facility. The impact report indicates that up to 180 students will be flying (as students) on a daily basis. However, in the future plan, the provision is for up to 250 students training, plus 50 other trainers/personnel. Considering 180 students represents one flight every few minutes, 250 would be incomprehensible. The other consideration that is not apparent in any of the environmental effects reports is these aircraft will be flying around our region for much of
Warming not new I HAVE noticed a few Letters To The Editor recently about climate change/ global warming and would like to submit the following report carried in the Washington Post on November 2: “The Arctic Ocean is warming up, icebergs growing scarcer, in some places seals are finding the water too hot, according to reports to the Commerce Dept. “Also, reports from seal hunters
the daylight hours and additionally at night. I have had the experience of listening to one or two light aircraft buzzing around my area persistently for hours on end and find that exceptionally annoying. Multiply that by 180 or even 250 ... that is totally unacceptable. One movement every four minutes ... daytime and night-time. The majority of residents in the Macleay region live here for the country lifestyle and the peace and quiet that comes along with that lifestyle. If this proposal takes effect then the majority of this region might just
as well live in a big city next to a major motorway. This region boasts many pristine national parks, some of the most magnificent coastline in the world , along with having a world heritage wilderness some 80 kms west of us. I find it hard to understand why Kempsey Council could entertain the possibility of having huge amounts of learner pilots buzzing around the region. The noise levels with them taking off and landing every couple of minutes, as well as the constant drone of perhaps 250 light aircraft movements constantly would not only directly affect those closest to the airport but everyone in the region with
the constant drone of these aircraft. The risk of accidents also would be heightened. Regardless of this project being driven by a foreign organisation, perhaps some economic benefits might flow to a select few in our region. This airport proposal will affect more than 90 per cent of our Macleay residents, damage our local tourism, now and into the future. Do not let this proposal go ahead as the damage to our environment will have far reaching effects, more than just the building of an aviation college at a small rural airport. Glen Ravenscroft
and explorers point to radical change in climate conditions and hitherto unheard of temperatures in the Arctic Zone. Expeditions report hardly any ice has been found as far north as 81 degrees 29 minutes. Great masses of ice have been replaced by stones and rocks and glaciers have almost entirely disappeared. “Within a few years, it is predicted that the ice will melt and the sea levels rise to such an extent that will make most coastal cities uninhabitable.”
I guess you could say that this sounds catastrophic? This report, by the way, was printed in the Washington Post on November 2, 1922. Now do you see what it is we are being conned into believing? The climate is always changing and always will as this report proves. Tony Evans Lake Cathie

Thumbs Down IN regards to the traffic debacle and delays at the Wrights Road roundabout. Yes, it is a debacle. However, if you are going to point fingers of blame, please point them in the correct direction. Those changes and the management of that intersection are all the responsibility of Roads and Maritime NSW. Not a thing to do with Port Macquarie-Hastings Council and nothing at all to do with the Glasshouse.

I WOULD like to publicly thank the mother-daughter duo who came to my assistance when I fell in the shallow surf at Town Beach. I was unable to get myself up in the soft sand, even with the help of my neighbour, Ken. They went out of their way to help me up, make sure I was okay, and brought our seats down to us. The lifeguard did come down when it was all over - he had been otherwise engaged.
Thumbs Up TO the Port Macquarie-Hastings Council for its financial management. Tens of millions paid off the dismissed Council’s debt, being in credit by $231,000,000 and increasing by $2,500,000 a month while building major roundabouts and now a $7,000,000 Indoor Stadium - and all this without a rate rise. WELL DONE.

TO the people in Port Macquarie who park their cars in bus zones, especially Morton Street, making it much harder for the elderly in the nearby village to access the buses. It is time these people were booked before someone has a fall as we can’t get anywhere near the bus shelter provided when we get off the bus on to a very rough surface.
TO the doctors and nurses in the emergency department at the Port Macquarie Base Hospital, who took care of my mother in her last hours. They were compassionate to our family and gave us the time and space to be with her right to the end. Thankyou from our family!

WHAT a massive week! We’re excited and totally exhausted this week. On top of producing a newspaper; we’ve also been burning the candle at both ends to prepare our new office premises. Holly and I, with the help of my son Zac and Holly’s fiancé, Jake have cleaned and painted the new office, ready for the big move. It was a big job and the end result is fantastic! Thanks guys for all your hard work…I really appreciate it! The new office is open from today, March 16 at 9am; come on down and say hello. We’re on the corner of Lord and Burrawan Streets, (the old Antique shop). There’s plenty of parking and easy, level access – and, of course, our lovely smiling faces to greet you. I have also had other news this week. Sadly, Nikala Sim, our journalist, has chosen to resign to pursue her personal adventure. On behalf of the YLI team and the wider community, I would like to thank Nikala for her efforts over the past six months. We wish Nikala all the best for her future endeavours! The flip-side? I’m now looking for a part-time journalist. If you are passionate about your local community; have proven writing experience, are honest, reliable, a team player, can work flexible hours and most importantly – can work to deadline – I want to hear from you. As the saying goes, as one door closes, another door opens!

A weekend of stories By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC SOME of the region’s most gifted writers will be attending the upcoming Grassroots Writers Weekend in Port Macquarie. The Grassroots Writers Weekend is in its fourth year and is bringing in writers from all across the mid north coast to perfect their craft. “The weekend is all about learning from each other and sharing our knowledge and experience,” said Wendy Haynes, event coordinator and president of the Port Writers Inc. The event will attract about 100 people, including members of writing clubs across Port Macquarie, Nambucca, Dorrigo, Taree and the Macleay. “We have attracted a few younger ones for this event,” Wendy said. “The average age is 70-80, but in saying that there’s also a few between 40-60, we have people from every age. “We start off the Friday with registration and three concurrent workshops, so the writers select which workshop they want to go to for each session. “Saturday it starts off with a panel on life writing, and then after that there’s another three sessions with three concurrent workshops for each session. “On the Friday night we are having a casual dinner and on the Saturday night we are having a two-course meal. “Again on the Sunday we have the same set up as Saturday with a couple of workshops and then a panel at the end on self publishing and then we are having the official hand over to Dorrigo, as its going back to Dorrigo for next year.” During the lunch breaks on Saturday and on Sunday there are expected to be as many as four book launches by local authors. J.K. Rowling, author of the Harry Potter series of novels, once said that she couldn’t
Presidents of local writers’ groups, from left, Iris Curteis (Dorrigo), Wendy Haynes (Port Macquarie), Diane Curran (Nambucca Valley) and Lorraine Penn (Coffs Harbour) imagine anyone not wanting to be a writer, and this event shows exactly that. “There’s such a variety of people at these events,” said Wendy. “There are a lot of retired business people, there’s quite a few people who have not only completed university degrees, but also university professors. “The diversity is so helpful for writing. For instance, I used to be a driving instructor. So if somebody wanted to write about instructing, I could give them that information.” Like many others attending, Wendy is looking to publish her own work and is currently writing two books. “A lot of people in our groups are interested in publishing books,” she said. “At a certain age some just want to get a book out there.
“I’m actually writing two books, a fiction and a non-fiction. But I’m also attending university so I am doing an associate degree in creative writing. “There are so many more people in creative writing degrees, and you can put anything on the Internet these days such as blogging, so writing doesn’t necessarily have to be a book either.” The 2017 Grassroots Writers Weekend will take place at the Port Macquarie Panthers Club on Friday, March 24, from 2.30pm-5pm, Saturday, March 25, from 9am-5pm and Sunday, March 26, from 9am-4pm. Tickets are $35 and are on sale until 5pm Friday March 17. Purchase tickets at: www. trybooking.com/book/event?eid=248110

Funding aim to boost tourism LOCAL community and government organisations in the Port Macquarie electorate are being encouraged to apply for funding for environment and tourism projects under the NSW Government’s new $300 million Regional Growth – Environment and Tourism Fund. Member for Port Macquarie, Leslie Williams, said the fund aims to increase tourism by supporting regional environment and tourism infrastructure projects to help grow and diversify regional economies across NSW. “This is great news for our region and I strongly encourage our local organisations to pitch for the funding,” she said. “I have met with Port Macquarie-Hastings Council on numerous occasions to encourage them to be prepared for this announcement and I hope they have projects planned and are ready to apply for funding. “Expressions of interest are now open for the initial round of the Fund – at least $100 million is available for regional environment and tourism projects from local and state government agencies, Aboriginal Land Councils and other Aboriginal groups, community groups registered as incorporated associations and non-government organisations. “The expressions of interest, which close on April 6, 2017, will be independently assessed and shortlisted by Infrastructure NSW with assistance from other NSW agencies.” Deputy Premier and Minister for Regional New South Wales, John Barilaro, said the Regional Growth – Environment and Tourism Fund was an exciting new initiative that would help to increase tourism, drive jobs creation and build on other NSW Government regional investment programs. “The Fund is part of the $20 billion Rebuilding NSW initiative, from which the Government has committed $6 billion for regional NSW.”

Backyard Landcare
WEED of the Month: Asparagus Fern (Asparagus aethiopicus) I remember years ago that this weed of national significance originating from South Africa with its feathery fronds and bright red berries was once a popular and common indoor house plant that could be bought from the nursery. Little did we know that this shade tolerant plant would invade our forest systems developing huge crowns and forming dense mats which starve nearby native plants. Many a Port Macquarie Landcare volunteer has battled with these plants in removing them from our wildlife corridors. What does it look like? Habit: This is a spiny shrub with sprawling stems. The stems grow from a tough crown which is part of the plant that must be dug up and removed. Leaves are bright green, fern like, needle-like leaflets. Flowers are small white to pinkish in summer. Fruit is a bright, round, shiny, red berry. The seeds must be removed. Dispersal: Seeds are spread by birds, water and dumping of garden waste in reserves. Asparagus Fern can also reshoot from small pieces. How do I remove it? Wear thick gloves and with secateurs cut off the stems about 20cm above soil level and place in a bag before throwing them away. Don’t cut too low or you may lose sight of the crown. The numerous water tubers (like bubbles) can be left in the ground as they contain no food and the plant cannot reproduce from them. Lift out the crown and check that it is entire and that you have all the berries. Seedlings may sprout where you have removed mature plants. These can be sprayed with glyphosphate. Port Macquarie Landcare Weed Manual is found on our web page at http://www. landcareportmac.com.au/. If you would like to volunteer to help keep Port Macquarie’s wildlife corridors in good condition, contact us at info@ landcareportmac.com.au or by phone 6583 6508 or 0432 141 605.
The new suburb of Sovereign Hills is providing an excellent business opportunity for local building companies. From left, Aaron Lloyd, Tony Weston, Adam Ferris, Monica Porte, John Caldon, Joel Freeman and Belinda Scaysbrook look forward to walking you through their display homes, this weekend.
Building a real future By NIKALA SIM ABSOLUTELY one of the coolest things about starting his own business is being in a position where he can support 60 to 70 tradespersons, and their families, Port Macquarie builder Joel Freeman says. Joel has just bought into a new, but very successful, franchise, to become one of the local builders of the Hastings newest suburb – Sovereign Hills. Getting the slab up, and building started, on his first Stroud Homes project, is ‘going just pretty much 24/7 at the moment’, Joel says. It’s an exciting time of life for the 36-yearold with child number two expected some time in the next six weeks. Joel lived in Port Macquarie from the age of 13, until he went overseas for an extended stint returning in his late-20s. “I didn’t start my carpentry apprenticeship until I was 28,” Joel says. “My older brother is a builder here in Port Macquarie and I did my first year with him. “I did the second year with Better Homes and then the third year working with AW Edwards doing high rise buildings. “Then at the end of my third year, Better Homes signed me off early and then I pretty much got put straight into a leading hand role and then moved up from there into foreman, supervisor and a management role.” To find a career that keeps him in Port Macquarie is gold, Joel says. “I guess it means a lot for me.
“I went to seven or eight different schools and moved heaps so it feels great to be settled in Port. “To be the builder and director of my own franchise means heaps. “It’s pretty exciting because the work looks pretty exciting.” That work is building a share of more than 2000 homes in what is the largest development in the region after the Pacific Highway expansion. The developer, Lewis Land Group, has a vision for Sovereign Hills, which is known within the industry as a master planned community, says development Director Rob Challenger. “We are building a whole new suburb which will be its own satellite city eventually.” This will include a dedicated town centre with retail, fairly extensive playing fields near St Josephs Regional College, extensive bicycle network, underpass to join the north and south areas, cafe, community centre which will be handed over to council, parklands and medical facilities. Each area has been named to give it an identity, Rob says, with the area kicking off now being Barton Heights. The last stage of the Sovereign Hills build will be called The Heritage. “We are leaving behind a community we are proud of and we look forward to watching the community as it flourishes over time. “We’re here for another ten or so years there’s a lot to do.” That’s good news for Joel who is proud of the fact that he can employ lots of other tradesman
in the area, thus supporting their families. “When my office in town is fully staffed I will only have maybe six or seven staff in the office but my subcontractors - I would have 60 or 80 subcontractors on various jobs at any one time all providing an income for their families. “So, that is a good feeling knowing we are providing extra work and income for them – and they are all local. “When you add up all the different trades there are so many different trades that go into a build. “From your surveyor to the people who do your soil testing, to the concreter that does your slab, plumbers, your landscape people, your carpenters, painters, electricians, roofers, your renderers, the guy that comes and does your driveway – it’s just endless. “There must be 60 or 70 trades that come to work on your job-site throughout the course of a build. “Even the guy who puts the blinds in at the end, the carpet, tiles, windows the list just goes on and on and on.” Sovereign Hills is half way between Port Macquarie and Wauchope and sits on either side of the Oxley Highway near the service centre known locally as the Donut. It is bounded to the west by John Oxley Drive heading north, and Sovereign Drive to the south. Joel Freeman is just one of a crowd of local builders involved. This Saturday you can view their work at the Barton Heights display village grand opening. Blocks two to 20 of Sovereign Drive will be open for inspection on March 18 from 9am.

Call is for fresh faces
Square dance enthusiast Tony Bowring
By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC TONY Bowring wants local youngsters to experience the fun and fitness benefits of square dancing. Tony and his wife Christine Bowring run square dancing classes in Port Macquarie, and have put out the welcome mat to people of all ages, but especially to those in the 18-30 bracket. “The dancing population has become older so we are trying to encourage the 18s-30s to also get involved,” Tony said. “With video games and everything else, we are trying to get that age group off the couch and dancing. “Some people are very reluctant to try square dancing, and unfortunately it’s always had that problem. However, we go to national conventions with thousands of people and you see people that you met 10 years ago. “So you can really do this dance anywhere around the world and with anyone…you’ll always find a club.” Tony said lack of experience, or ability, were not obstacles.
Square dancing is alive and well in Port Macquarie, but local caller and instructor Tony Bowring would like to see more younger people involved “People say they’ve got two left feet, but anyone can do it,” he said. “It’s a team activity so you work in a group and its also relaxing. There is the ability to structure it to any pace, both mentally and physically.” Tony has been square dancing since he was just 14 years old and has been conducting square dancing classes for over 25 years. “It’s very good mental and physical exercise and you’re achieving something with a group,” he said. I started when I was 14 years old and danced for quite some time. It’s really good with a group of friends.” Although Queensland and Victoria still have
a strong population of square dancers, Tony says New South Wales is lacking in numbers. A situation he hopes to reverse on the Mid North Coast. Tony and Christine Bowring have a new beginners class held on Tuesday nights from 7pm-8.30pm at the senior citizens hall at 43 Munster Street, Port Macquarie. The classes are just $8 per person, which goes straight towards hall costs as it is a not- forprofit community activity. For more information on Tony and Christine’s classes call Tony on 0408 340 990 or simply turn up to a Tuesday night class.

Royce Bennett from North Coast Local Land Services said the North Coast Plan forms part of a strategic planning approach being undertaken by all 11 Local Land Services regions and is designed to guide resource allocation and investment. “We’ve had an overwhelming response in the consultation period so far and we’re keeping it open to allow everyone to have their say,” Royce said. “The consultation period is an opportunity for stakeholders, organisations and interested community members to provide feedback on the management of weeds in the North Coast region. “The cost of weeds to the agricultural industry on the North Coast is significant, as is the impact on the environment and we know the community wants greater coordination between government and landholders.” Regional Weeds Committees have been established under the Local Land Services Act 2013 and are in operation around the State. Membership includes representatives from major stakeholder groups. The Biosecurity Act 2015 adopts the concept of a general biosecurity duty. It means that anyone who is aware of a potential risk should take all reasonable and practical measures to minimise or eliminate that risk. The draft Regional Strategic Weeds Management Plans are a direct response to this legislative reform. The primary outcome of the weed reform process will be the integration of weed management efforts across the State.

STATE MATTERS
With Leslie Williams State Member for Port Macquarie
How long have you lived in or around the Hastings? On and off around the region for some 12 years. Had a two-year stint in California sailing back to Port as a resident at the Marina and Port Macquarie since 2013. What do you love most about the Hastings? The climate, the well-planned city atmosphere while still retaining the country feel of a leisurely lifestyle. Where do you work and what do you love about your work? I work and live for my music. That work fills my life with joy and happiness. Every day is a new experience for me to be part of every event I create in Port Macquarie and the region I service. What do you like least about your work? I can’t really answer that because I can’t think of any negatives in my life. I sustain a positive outlook. How do you start your day? Every morning I start at Town Beach gym with a workout. Then I have a rock that looks straight at the Pacific Ocean and I think of all the good experiences in my life and give gratitude to my soul maker. What do you do in your spare time? Teach myself more skills in the music world, playing piano and percussion and vocal exercises and meeting new musicians. What is the achievement you are most proud of? Being self-employed all my life. Travelled to most parts of this world. Achieved successful positions within our community and served for charities for many years assisting those less fortunate in our society. Motor car racing. Sailing from San Diego via Mexico across the Pacific Ocean 19,000km half way around the globe arriving in Port Macquarie in a 47ft sailing yacht in 2013.
HASTINGS Koalas Orchestra: Last week in Parliament, I had the opportunity to praise a number of inspirational people in the Port Macquarie electorate who have passionately embarked on addressing the needs of vulnerable people in our community and supporting others to achieve their dreams. Hearing of each of their ventures I had no hesitation in championing their visions and am pleased that the NSW Government has been able to provide funding support to each organisation. I spoke of the leadership of an extraordinary lady - Patricia Johnson OAM and her work with the Hastings Koalas Orchestra who have forged an enduring relationship with the residents of Handa in Japan. For the past 26 years Port Macquarie and the city of Handa have enjoyed a cultural exchange program based on increasing trade and economic development. During that time more than 300 Handa Higashi students have visited Port Macquarie to explore the local hospitality and experience the Australian way of life. The orchestra was formed in 1988 and
State member for Port Macquarie Leslie Williams with members of the Hastings Koalas Orchestra wearing their new uniforms includes people of all ages who are passionate about music and performing for the enjoyment of others. The orchestra has had a long and distinguished career under Patricia’s guidance. They have toured extensively throughout Asia, Queensland and NSW sharing their passion and at the same time raising money for Rotary Lodge in Port Macquarie. The members always look very proud in their tailored uniforms, but unfortunately many have become a little worse for wear. So when Patricia
came to see me about the need for support to purchase new blazers for their upcoming visit to Handa I had no hesitation in seeking funding of almost $3,000 through the Regional Communities Fund. Their new uniforms look amazing and have arrived in time for their trip to Handa next month. I know that others will join me in wishing them every success for their tour and I particularly acknowledge the tireless work of Patricia Johnson and her committee.
Finding a gismo for the thingamajig my
WE were sitting in the computer class talking about all sorts of things, sometimes anything except computers. I go because of the Tim Tams, named after a racehorse. Then the subject turned to gismos – “my gismo doesn’t work”, “have you tried turning it on”, that sort of thing. I wrote down the word gismo. Here is a word I grew up with, never knowing what it meant, but it covered all sorts of eventualities. Gismo is a “highly technical” word that refers to anything you want it to cover, especially when you can’t think of the word you seek. But it does have a history and it is in some dictionaries - but very few. I checked about six dictionaries and only one touched on it, although I am sure there must be some that include the word. My big 20-volume dictionary says a gismo, also spelt gizmo, is a “thingamajig”. I told you the word was highly technical. My big dictionary quotes Time magazine as trying to define the word. On July 19, 1943, Time said gismo was “a term of universal significance, capable of meaning gadget, stuff, thing, whozis (now there’s a new word) or almost anything the speaker wants it to”.
LAURIE BARBER
The dictionary went on to refer to many newspapers and magazines that used the word. It even brought clothes hangers into the discussion. Incidentally, whozis, also spelt whosis, seems to have a Spanish background and means something for which a person has forgotten the name (or does not wish to remember). Other words include whatchamacallit and thingamajig. The word gizmo seeks to have many uses, apart from covering things that are better forgotten. For instance, the word covers computer repairs, printers, motor garages, books (one author chose Gizmo as the title of his story), restaurants, horses and just about anything you can think of, or unthink as the case may be. One site said a story by an author was “pretty weird”. I won’t mention the name of the author in case he’s your favourite.
My big dictionary says the word is US slang whose origin is unknown. But if your wife asks you about that blonde you were with last night don’t refer to that blonde as a whozis, even though my big dictionary does say “Mr Whosis” and a woman “as slick as Whoosis vaseline”. Just confess. “She’s the new mechanic. She was teaching me how to start my battery…” Incidentally, while I was researching gizmo, I came across an item for gypsy. This, according to an item from around 1811, is a person who will tell your fortune “for a small portion of it”. Of course, it doesn’t happen these days. Some time ago (maybe several years) I wrote about breaking news. This was a news item on radio or television that was so important that the normal program was interrupted to report it. Think about the disappearance of Harold Holt, or the dismissal of Gough Whitlam. But “breaking news” has become increasingly popular in recent times to report on things like a Sydney road accident I recently turned on the news and an early item was “breaking news”. It was in the headlines. Now, the news is the news. It can’t break, surely. The program is there for the news. lauriebarber.com; lbword@midcoast.com.au

CANBERRA CONNECTIONS
By the Lord, how this island rocks!
With Dr David Gillespie Federal MP for Lyne
By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC IT may not be Australia’s best-known music festival, but the Lord Howe Island Rockfest is truly unique and almost always guaranteed to be a sellout. The week-long event, which starts this Saturday (March 18), is in its sixth year and is one island party that the locals and vacationers won’t be missing. “The event sells out almost 11 months in advance each year,” said Damon Lesnie, music director of Lord Howe Rockfest. “We get about 500 people to each show and we can’t get any bigger because numbers wise we can’t let any more people on the island. It is an absolutely resounding success.” Lord Howe Island has about 400 permanent residents and has a visitor limit of just 400 people, making this event a real one-off experience. “The first night is a classic rock party where we play classic rock music that everyone loves,” said Damon. “The Neds Beach Show is always a little more subdued, it’s meant to be sunset and cruisy music. The final night on the Friday is what we call ‘Island Night’ and the bands play whatever they want that will send the crowds nuts in horrible flower shirts.” The talented bands come from both Sydney and from Lord Howe Island. “The event is sponsored by David Berkman’s
Event sponsor David Berkman has a genuine affinity with Lord Howe Island company which is Big Music, a school and studio in Crows Nest, Sydney,” said Damon. “We take over a professional band of Sydney performers and also we take two student bands with us. It’s an opportunity for some of the bands that we teach and coach here at Big Music to go on tour for a week. “There’s a group of players who have played with ARIA hall of famers, and they are the ‘Stage Invaders’. This year they are doing a full rendition of ‘Pink Floyd’s’ dark side of the moon on the beach at Lord Howe with a full fire works display. “We also do shows with the school kids from the island, they actually open up a couple of the festival shows. There’s a local rock band that also do some of the opening slots for some of the festival shows as well.” Despite the success the event has had over the years, David and Damon feel that true success is what they have given back. “Everything is free,” Damon said. “David

Berkman is a patron of the event, his family has being going there for holidays for many years, upwards of 40 trips over there. The island has given him plenty, and David is in a position to give back. “It really all started for us going over and playing one or two shows and giving the kids their first ever music lessons. We gave all the kids their ukuleles. Now six years down the track they’ve got their own music program. Kids have regular ukulele lessons, and every year they get to perform on the rockfest bills. “That’s what we are most proud of. We went over there with a plan to introduce music to rural areas of New South Wales, and there is no further rural than Lord Howe Island.” The Lord Howe Island Rockfest weeklong event runs from Saturday, March 18, to Friday, March 25. THE local area will continue to benefit from an expanding investment by the Federal Coalition Government in aged and home care services. This week I announced this electorate would receive $1,004,635 as part of a $115million investment in extra aged-care funding support to assist more older Australians to continue to live independently at home and in their communities. Approximately 245 organisations across Australia will receive funding to deliver additional aged-care services nationally through the Commonwealth Home Support Program (CHSP) Growth Funding Round. The CHSP supports more than 640,000 older people – 65 years and over or 50 years and over for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people - across Australia to live at home and maintain their independence. The additional funding will help people to stay in the communities they grew up in, or worked in all their lives, and was a great way to keep communities strong. Older people assessed as needing assistance with household chores, preparing meals, personal care and home maintenance will get the help they need to stay at home near family and friends. Practical help like extra transport services to take people to appointments as well as social events in their local community are simple, but very important, for an older person’s happiness and wellbeing. I’m delighted that our region has received funding for additional services so our older residents get the care and attention they deserve. Information about the CHSP Growth Funding Round is available on the Tenders and Grants page on the Department of Health website.

Cash stash crisis growing THE February 2017 council meeting report on the state of the Port Macquarie-Hastings Council financial accounts showed $231,000,000 of ratepayer and taxpayer funds stashed away, mostly in investment accounts. This is up from just over $100,000,000 held in accounts since 2012. March 2017 sees another nearly $8,000,000 added to the cash stockpile which has now reached a staggering $238,900,000. What is interesting is that as this massive cash hoard grows larger, the council throws out more ‘spin’ when it comes to trying to explain its way through this monumental crisis. The most recent council report on the finances acknowledges ‘Whilst the current level of investments remain high, these largely relate to funds which have legal restrictions (for example water and sewer), or for funds held for specific purposes’. This quote is particularly concerning as it only ‘strategically’ tells part of the story and therefore to the unaware, it sounds quite a legitimate position statement.
The Rinse Cycle By Adam Roberts - Former Councillor, Port MacquarieHastings Council
Unfortunately, what a balanced statement should read is something to the effect (and in addition to the above quote): However, council has more than $115,000,000 in the General Fund which is available to be distributed according to a council resolution. Putting it much more simply, the council report suggests that ‘the’ money is restricted, when in reality, only part of the money is ‘earmarked’ for specific jobs all the while failing to tell the full story as to why the cash pile is growing at an alarming rate. Further, councillors have full control over what the General Fund cash is spent on, not staff,
and it is certainly not all ‘legally’ restricted. The main reason the cash is stock-piling and is growing so fast is simply because council cannot deliver infrastructure works and or projects on the ground as quick as they can syphon money from other levels of government and also hit up the ratepayers. They collect more money than they can spend quickly enough. The whole local government area would no doubt economically and socially benefit from an increased council output when it comes to delivering projects and infrastructure. Jobs would be created and the infrastructure backlog would shrink, placing council and the community in a very positive position. Council’s rate of capital works or projects delivery in the last four years was approximately 50% of what was promised. An incredibly poor performance by any standards. Private enterprise would have sacked the board or management group already with a track record like that. Let alone not having a plan to deal with the fundamental crisis it finds itself in.

According to its new CEO, Steve Rowe, Governor Hurley called in to see the facility and gained some insight into Benelong’s operations. His Excellency’s main goal, though, was to
thank Benelong’s Haven and the current board for keeping this excellent and vital community service operating. A very visionary lady, Dr Valerie BryantCarrol OAM, founded the facility 43 years ago in 1974 and was a sister of one of the existing board members. Benelong’s Haven is a rehabilitation facility with a Philosophy of Care to treat all forms of addiction.
It does this by seeking to re-establish spiritual bonds in human relationships damaged by addiction. Port Macquarie Taxis celebrate a major milestone in ticking over 1 million journeys since implementing their state of the art Smart Move dispatch and tracking system in September 2013. “The upgrade to in-car touch units has provided drivers with a central booking, meter and tracking system that utilises mobile technology to enable an improved efficiency for our customers and overall management of our fleet”General Manager Steve Read said this week. Regular Port Macquarie Taxi’s customer of ten years, Mrs Maureen Elizabeth Howie was the lucky millionth booking and to mark the occasion and received a special pamper gift and a bottle of bubbles from management to say thank you. Maureen and her husband Gordon, discovered Port Macquarie on a caravanning holiday and chose to retire here from Tasmania in 1992.Due to an unfortunate turn inGordon’s health and Maureen’sinability to drive, the couple become regular taxis users from 2007 for their outings &
medical appointments. Sadly Gordon passed away in 2012 and Maureen has since been battling a rare inoperable lung cancer that requires her to travel up to 4 times a week in a taxi for treatment locally. Maureen has built a close relationship with the local dispatch team and her regular drivers over many years “The kind and reliable service I receive when I call to book my taxi is so appreciated. The drivers are always very happy to have a chat, caring as they help me to and from the car and see me safely to my door with my bags”. The team at Port Macquarie Taxis are inspired by Maureen’s positive spirit and determination, and look forward to seeing her achieve her goal; travelling to Tasmania in February next year for her beloved mother’s 100th birthday. Get to know neighbours IT was Mother Teresa who wisely challenged her followers: “I want you to be concerned about your next door neighbour. Do you know your next door neighbour?” Sunday, March 26, is Neighbour Day – a wonderful opportunity to get to know the people in your neighbourhood and build the social links that make our communities the great places they are to live and work. Neighbour Day brings together like-minded people, resources, and organisations to grow stronger, well connected communities. The principal aim of Neighbour Day is to build better relationships with the people who live around us, especially the elderly and vulnerable. This year’s theme is: ‘The Importance of Social Connection for the Elderly’. Neighbours are important because good

relationships with others can, and do, change communities. Social connection also makes us feel better as it helps prevent loneliness, isolation and depression. You can get involved with Neighbour Day in a number of different ways, from hosting a morning tea for your neighbours, arranging
a picnic in the park, or organising a BBQ for your block. The official Neighbour Day website, at www.neighbourday.org includes a long list of suggestions and tips on how you can get involved. There is even a free resource e-kit to help you get started. Your workplace can also get involved. Business PROFILE
Latest imaging is here REGIONAL and remote residents of the Macleay can be grateful a local healthcare provider is committed to medical innovation, and the provision of state-of-the art facilities, skills and services. Mid North Coast Diagnostic Imaging (MNCDI) has seized the opportunity offered by the 35 Belgrave Street Hampton Property Group refurbishment. MNCDI Area Manager Shayne Trotter is a born and bred local so has a vested interest in ensuring services help the community. “I love that we’re definitely in a growth phase at the moment with MNCDI as part of Primary Healthcare Services, so you can expect a lot more services that you would normally only get in the city,” he said. “I love the fact that people in this region and surrounds have access to modalities and technologies, skills and intelligence that normally aren’t available in regional centres. “In terms of the latest technology, we’ve got the 3D mammogram service with Tomosynthesis
MRI so not only can we do breast MRI, we can then put it into computer detection software that allows even more information. “And if we see something else we can biopsy under MRI, which is not a very common ability. “This superior clarity in diagnosis is evidenced by 41% increase in invasive breast cancer detection compared to conventional 2D mammography. “Keeping the focus on better outcomes, will always ensure success.” MNCDI is only the second imaging service in Australia to receive this technology and bring it to Port Macquarie. New technology also includes the multi-slice CT scanner and with this and ultrasound and Nuclear Medicine there’s not much MNCDI is missing. But it is not just about the technology, Shayne says, but also about professional patient care,
the latest innovation and best skill sets available in regional towns, better facilities and enabling doctors and patients for better clinical outcomes. “I am excited by the depth of skills and expertise our team have to offer that benefit the people of the Mid North Coast,” he said. “The experience for our patients and referrers must be focused on their needs.” This is underpinned by affordable and unprecedented access to the most comprehensive, innovative, low-dosage equipment and skilled healthcare professionals that meet present and future needs of the community, without having to travel to the city, Shayne says. Clear and accurate diagnostics are available on time, every time across 15 regional centres, enabling medical practitioners to provide the best treatment that result in improved clinical outcomes for doctors and patients. New look for Kempsey health hub A HEALTH hub has taken the principal of ‘the body is a temple’ and applied it to its building as well. Kempsey Healthcare, located at 35 Belgrave Street, was officially reopened last Thursday after a three-year refurbishment. The building has historically been the primary medical centre for Kempsey since it first opened in 1980, but it had not kept up with modern healthcare requirements and suffered from a lack of investment over many years. Hampton Property Group purchased the building in 2014 and immediately engaged both the existing tenants and local community to ensure that the planned improvements met the needs of those that use the centre. “It’s easy to spend money, but it’s important to make this investment in a way that will benefit those who use the centre regularly,” Hampton Property Group Director Derek Miller says. “The centre already had a lot of things going for it - it is in the CBD, has great parking facilities and is close to public transport, but needed a major upgrade, both in terms of access for patients as well as cosmetic improvements.” This investment in health is one Derek is proud to be able to make for the community of Kempsey and the broader region. “As a business, Hampton Property Group has a focus on healthcare projects, particularly in regional areas of New South Wales,” Derek says. “This capacity to assist the community by developing healthcare facilities with their current and future needs in mind, is always the first priority.” When you visit 35 Belgrave Street, the first
thing you will notice is the fresh new look and easy-to-read signage. The courtyard and gardens are a welcome addition and include a seated area where you can wait in the fresh air between appointments. “Hampton Property Group put inclusive access at the front of its redesign with a stretchercompliant lift installed making access much easier than the old ramp,” Derek says. “The first floor is now completely protected from the elements by a floor-to-ceiling glazing and louvre system, and a number of other changes have been made for comfort and safety.” The refurbishment has also benefited a number of local businesses. “Almost all of the work has been undertaken by businesses in the local Kempsey area, which has been of exceptional high quality,” says Derek. “It’s been great to work with trades that are able to take on these sorts of projects and deliver this sort of outcome.” Kempsey Healthcare now provides two GP Clinics (TriStar Medical Group and Dr Hooman Shahkar), a Specialist Doctor Centre, two pathology providers (Laverty and Douglass Hanley Moir) as well as a new and completely refurbished medical imaging tenant (Mid-North Coast Diagnostic Imaging). There are only two suites remaining in the centre and these are expected to be leased over the next six months or so, as word of the redevelopment spreads. Healthcare providers interested in joining the largest healthcare centre in Kempsey are invited to contact Derek Miller on 0418 202 024 or Carlos Peters from LJH Kempsey on 0427 256 570.

Enterta nment WEEKLY
Mothball is coming MONKEY Baa Theatre Company, the awardwinning theatre company for young people, is bringing Diary of a Wombat, a new Australian play based on the multi-award winning picture book by Jackie French and Bruce Whatley, to Port Macquarie’s Glasshouse theatre. Millions of young people around the world have adored the book, and now finally this iconic work has been adapted for the stage by Monkey Baa’s Creative Directorate Eva Di Cesare, Sandra Eldridge and Tim McGarry. This landmark Australian production will feature stunning puppetry, a live cello score and a brilliant set design in Monkey Baa’s signature style. Audiences aged three and over will meet Mothball, the naughtiest wombat in Australia. Bored with her daily routine, Mothball goes in search of shelter and food, creating chaos in the lives of the humans around her. Doormats, bins and washing lines are no match for this mischievous marsupial. Between a packed schedule of scratching, sleeping and eating, Mothball discovers that with a bit of persistence humans are quite easily trained. Director Eva Di Cesare and a team of revered creatives including Puppetry and Movement Director Alice Osborne (War Horse), Designer Imogen Ross (Hitler’s Daughter) and accomplished composer Oonagh Sherrard (The Tribe) use the magic of puppetry and live music to bring this delightful story to the stage.

TWO thousand eucalyptus seedlings grown at Forestry Corporation of NSW’s Grafton production nursery have been donated to Port Macquarie Koala Hospital, where they will help to expand a new feed tree plantation established to supply leaves to feed the koalas in care at the hospital. Forestry Corporation’s Senior Ecologist Chris Slade said the seedlings were donated from a crop of more than 600,000 seedlings currently being dispatched to re-establish timber plantations in the north of the State. “It’s currently planting season and we are sending seedlings out to plantations throughout the north of the State, so when the hospital told us they were looking for assistance, we had some good quality tallowwood, forest red gum, swamp mahogany and grey gum seedlings ready to go,” Mr Slade said. “Tallowwood in particular is one of the species koalas prefer, so we make sure we have tallowwood dispersed through timber plantations and native State forests to provide continuous corridors of feed trees for koalas moving across the local landscape.”

Nippers shine at titles
A TEAM of eager young Nippers from across the Mid North Coast made the journey south to Lake Macquarie for the 2017 NSW Surf Life Saving Age Championships last weekend. Port Macquarie SLSC was top of the table for Mid North Coast clubs finishing the competition in a highly creditable 25th spot overall. In what shapes as an encouraging sign for the future, it was their youngest competitors who won the Mid North Coast’s powerhouse opening gold medal. Jesse Andrews, Joseph Carrick, Lucas Scott, and Lewis Shipway joined forces in the U9 Beach Relay where they scorched the sand to be crowned state champions. Clubmates Jaidyn Rossiter and Fleur Sherlock were both finalists in their respective Flag Competitions, while the U14 Female Relay Team also demonstrated pure speed when

they reached the final of what is traditionally a highly competitive age group. Ty-Jesse Brabant and Jesse Hiatt combined forces to win silver in the U13 Board Rescue, Port Macquarie’s lone medal in water disciplines, though Harry Askew (U11 Ironman and Surf Race) went close to ending that streak when he finished an agonising fourth in both events. Competing in her first state titles, Cleo Schubert highlighted her grit and determination when she made it through to the final in the U9 Surf Race. Tacking Point’s Tyse Thrower went within a wave of claiming bronze in the U10 Board Race, ultimately having to settle for fourth. Sarah Stewart from Wauchope-Bonny Hills battled the wind and sand to finish an impressive fifth in the U14 Female 2KM Beach run.
NSW Surf Sports Manager Rob Pidgeon felt that despite the challenges of the weather and the conditions it was a highly successful competition for the young athletes. “I would like to congratulate everyone for what was an extremely successful State Age Championships,” he said. “It was certainly played in the right spirit, and all the Nippers, their families, and their clubs can look back with pride on what has been a fantastic surf sport season. “Some of our older Nipper competitors will now go on to get their first taste of national level racing at next month’s Australian Championships while our younger ones can look forward to an exciting finish with their club season.”

SEMI-FINALS of the club’s fours championship were played last Sunday morning and spectators were entertained by two very close games. In game one, Jeff Purdy’s team got away to a good start and were up by nine shots after eight ends. On the fourteenth and sixteenth ends, Lester Thurgate’s team scored two “fives” to get themselves right back in the game. However Jeff’s team held on to win narrowly by twentytwo shots to twenty. Shots were hard to come by in game two with the teams of Adolf Giacovani and Peter Lihou on nine shots apiece after twelve ends, thirteen all after eighteen ends and fourteen all after twenty ends. The final end was a thriller with Adolf’s scoring a single shot to win fifteen shots to fourteen. Subject to any re-scheduling of pennant matches due to possible wet weather, final of the club fours championship is likely to be played on Sunday 26th March at 9:00am. Twenty-two players nominated for our Wednesday afternoon’s club select triples with the best performed winners on the day visitor Peter Willis, Graeme Atkins and Jim Hopcroft on plus twenty-four. Runners up were Don Murdoch, Brian Clarke and Adolf Giacovani on plus three. Thirty regulars nominated for Wednesday’s twilight bowls with the winners Alan Towle, Rocky Laurie and Ross Laurie with the runners up Andy Beazley, Dale Atkin and Paul Harrison.
Flying Fish takes monohull event LAST Sunday the Port Macquarie Sailing Club held race eight of the summer series in an easy easterly breeze and a strong run-out tide. The race began with a handicap start. With a number of catamaran sailors away, only two boats contested this division and they decided to only do three laps instead of the usual four, a decision they somewhat regretted when the breeze filled in more and they finished rather early. Rob Barwick on Drift won on both yardstick and handicap ahead of Dave Winter on Spica. In the monohull division, Elsa and Simon Gandy stepped out of their Tasar to do their first race in their Flying 11, Flying Fish, to take the win on yardstick. Second place was taken by Tony Walker in Deep Purple ahead of Philip Lillehagen (who has now purchased this Tasar) and Jake Kordemaa in Elmo, Steve Bohlsen sailing oneup in the MG Splash Dance, and Paul Robertson and Warren Sykes in Flembouyant. Splash Dance won on handicap, followed by Deep Purple, Flying Fish, Elmo, and Flembouyant. Next weekend is race nine of the summer series, starting at 2pm. Dave Winter is rostered on duty.
Elsa and Simon Gandy on Flying Fish Friday’s nominated pairs saw sixteen players turn out with the best performed winners on plus sixteen, Adolf Giacovani, (for the third week in a row), and Gordon Wagner, (standing in for Peter McLeod). Runners up were John Potts and Mal Agnew on plus fifteen.

footytips
Wipeout! But it’s only Round 3
WIPEOUT! That was the feeling amongst most tipsters after Round 2 of the NRL. If you followed Your Local Independent’s tips you would have finished with a lowly 2. Not good, but it shows the early season form in 2017 is very difficult to predict. Who would have guessed that after two rounds, the Eels would be leading the comp, the Raiders would be in 16th and the Knights would be in the top eight! But comps and grand finals are not won after Rd 2, so there will be a lot of false starts before this season is over. Slowly but surely we will see some definite form lines emerge. We can see already that the Titans will struggle on the back of a shocking injury run. The whispers about trouble at the Dogs appear to be spot on, with their winless start. However the Panthers are back in favour and the Eels look impressive. And what about the Cowboys and Broncos. Another Golden Point thriller. The NRL should be paying these two clubs extras. They just keep coming up with white knuckle
outcomes. And JT? He surely is the new ‘King’. OK, so let’s try to recoup after last weekend and, like the Raiders, find some points and some form. Storm v Broncos (Thursday, March 16, 7.05pm, AAMI Stadium, Melbourne): Wow. Tough start. The talk is that Billy Slater will be back after a lengthy sideline stint because of a shoulder injury. This will be just one of the spicy twists to this blockbuster. The Storm’s tough trek to NZ last weekend will leave them with tired legs. But same story for the Broncs after their over-time loss. Bounce of the ball, but you have to follow the winners. • Your Local Independent Tips: Storm Bulldogs v Warriors (Friday, March 17, 5pm, Forsyth Barr Stadium, Dunedin): Bit of a whisper that Kieran Foran will line up for Warriors. Either way, they can give themselves a big early season boost by claiming the Dogs’ scalp. Making the job tougher for the winless Bulldogs is the fact that the game is in Dunedin, despite it being a Canterbury home game. The bookies have the Warriors as $1.45 favourites.

Go with the money. • Your Local Independent Tips: Warriors Titans v Eels (Friday, March 17, 7.05pm, Cbus Super Stadium, Gold Coast): Jarryd Hayne heads a long injury list for the Titans. So the Hayne v Eels soap opera will not be screening. Parramatta meanwhile are likely to have an unchanged side from last weekend’s win over the Dragons. The Eels faithful are already dusting off their last premiership uniform (from 1986). Bit early, but they are ticking all the boxes. • Your Local Independent Tips: Eels Knights v Rabbitohs (Saturday, March 18, 3.30pm, McDonald Jones Stadium, Newcastle): The Knights ended the drought last weekend, but the Rabbitohs also showed they haven’t forgotten how to win by smashing Manly. This game is at Newcastle, but surely South Sydney can’t be as bad, or as unlucky (injuries) as the Titans were. • Your Local Independent Tips: Rabbitohs Panthers v Roosters (Saturday, March 18, 6pm, Pepper Stadium, Penrith): Early markets have these two teams as level pegging with the

bookies – and for good reason. The Panthers put the Tigers back in their place last weekend and eased any concerns that brewed after an ordinary Rd 1. Some concern over an injury to Bryce Cartwright, which could dent their hopes just a little. The Roosters meanwhile are two from two. This is a Panthers home game and you just sense they are improving rapidly. • Your Local Independent Tips: Panthers Cowboys v Sea Eagles (Saturday, March 18, 8pm, 1300 Smiles Stadium, Townsville): The Cows have a few out with injury – Coote, Winterstein, Scott – and Taumalolo facing a week on the sideline with suspension. However this is the Cowboys! Two from two. At home. And they have JT. However, that said, wipe through the hype and Manly can cause an upset. After two wins to start the season any team can be forgiven for exhaling. And the Cows would think they are assured against the winless Sea Eagles. We have to go for NQ, but don’t be surprised. • Your Local Independent Tips: Cowboys Raiders v Tigers (Sunday, March 19, 3pm, GIO Stadium, Canberra): OK, will the real Raiders please stand up. Two games, two losses … and they are supposed to be winning the title this year. Bit of a whisper that the inspirational Jarrod Croker could be coming back from 16th – 19th March 2017 injury and that big Dave Taylor might Thursday 16th March, 8.05pm, AAMI Park even be given a run. The Tigers are one Storm vs Broncos from two, but looked ordinary against Friday 17th March, 6pm, Forsyth Barr Stadium the Panthers last weekend. Let’s keep Bulldogs vs Warriors the belief. Friday 17th March, 8.05pm, Cbus Super Stadium • Your Local Independent Tips: Titans vs Eels Saturday 18th March, 4.30pm, McDonald Jones Stadium Raiders Sharks v Dragons (Sunday, March Knights vs Rabbitohs Saturday 18th March, 7pm, Pepper Stadium 19, 5.30pm, Southern Cross Group Panthers vs Roosters Stadium, Cronulla): Well the Sharks pressed pause on the premiership hangover theory by belting the Raiders in Canberra last weekend. They are also expected to welcome back Valentine Holmes from a hamstring injury. • Your Local Independent Tips: Sharks
