‘What a fizzer!’ Critic says says bicentennial too quiet

By BARBARA DYER AS the day draws nearer to mark the bicentennial of John Oxley’s arrival on local shores, it seems the controversy surrounding it will not go away. With those supporting the indigenous sensitivities on one side saying it is a day of mourning, not celebration, there is the other side who argue that history should be celebrated, just as it was 50 years ago, 150 years after Oxley’s arrival. While Surveyor-General John Oxley arrived at what is now the New South Wales Mid North Coast in 1818, to follow the Hastings River to the place he named Port Macquarie, 2021 marks 200 years since Europeans established Port Macquarie as a penal settlement. And long-term resident Janelle Higgins, whose connection to Port Macquarie goes back to 1902 when her grandfather Albert Lindman arrived in the township, says she and husband Laurie believe more should be done to celebrate the 200th anniversary of Oxley’s arrival. “Our main complaint with the 200th anniversary is the way it is not being celebrated,” she says. “Laurie and I were married on October 5, 1968, which was the 150th anniversary of John Oxley’s arrival. “It was the October long weekend, but the celebrations went for a week or more.

“The town was full of visitors. “There was a parade, a ball and heaps of events, though we missed most of it because of our honeymoon. “There was even a beard growing competition finishing with a shave-off the day after our wedding. “My mother was horrified because the minister and ushers all had some sort of facial hair and she was horrified about what our relations and out-oftown guests would think. “The point is, it appears to us that Port has lost so much of its history and to treat the work of John Oxley in this manner is disrespectful and downright disgraceful. “Without him, none of us would be here.” With two children and five grandsons, continuing five generations of at least one member of the Lindman family living in Port Macquarie, Janelle says it is important for Port Macquarie to stay in touch with its past. “What are they really doing to celebrate, though?” she asks. “Tastings on Hasting has been cancelled for this year, with funds to be diverted to groups who want to arrange their own events. “But it’s hardly significant for such an important historical figure. “Council should be doing more.” • Continued Page 3

Surf history untold Author keen for book, museum

PORT Macquarie has one of the richest surfing histories in Australia, people just don’t know about it. After local Keith McMullen published his trilogy - The Wayward Surfer - he realised how much Port Macquarie needed its own surfing history book. “Port Macquarie has one of the richest surfing histories in Australia and I don’t think a lot of people know it. It dates back to 1912,” said Keith. “It’s common knowledge that surfing was introduced to Australia by a Hawaiian called Duke Kahanamoku and he came out here in 1914-15 when he gave a surfboard riding demonstration. “Two years previous to that however, Harry McMullen, my grandfather, who was born and raised here in Port Macquarie, was riding waves in Town Beach on the surf ski he made. So Port Macquarie had active surfers before the Duke came and introduced modern surfing.” Keith is in the process of producing and publishing a coffee table book on the History of Port Macquarie Surfing. Sales from The Wayward Surfer will raise funds to pay for this next publication. Keith also hopes to one day see a surfing museum in Port Macquarie. “I started surfing when I was 12 years old,” he recalls. “I still remember when I surfed my very first wave at Town Beach. It was like I was transformed into another realm. I immediately remember turning around after that one ride and wanting to get back out there to catch another one as quickly as possible. “There is currently no surfing museum in Port Macquarie, but it would be such a wonderful addition to the town to preserve our surfing heritage which is over 100 years old. “Our surfing community over the last 40 years has produced amateur world champions, numerous Australian and NSW champions, six local surfers who surfed on the World Championship Tour - the highest possible professional level - one of them being

Above: Author, passionate surfer and surf historian Keith McMullen. Above left: Keith’s book, The Wayward Surfer. Mick Campbell who almost won the World Championship one year against Kelly Slater.” Keith has now surfed all around Australia, New Zealand and through Asia. “Just about every surfer is a life-long surfer or has picked it up as their main sport and they describe surfing a wave as like riding a magic carpet,” he explains. “There’s a scientific reason for that feeling too. When the wave breaks, it releases into the air little unseen particles called negative ions, and when they are breathed in, they bring on a natural feel good factor. A natural euphoria or happiness. There are even doctors who are surfers in America who are using it to treat mental health issues.” The Wayward Surfer is written in three parts. The first part includes satirical articles on news, which takes a provocative look at some of surfing’s sacred cows.

The second part is short stories about surfing, which are fictional, and the third part includes adventures based on Keith’s travel memoirs. The main character throughout the book is an unlikely surfer from Russia, Keith’s alter ego. “I’m an emerging writer who has been writing for the last ten years,” Keith said. “I now have two books which are both available on Amazon, one concerning Taekwondo and the Wayward Surfer. I was also an English teacher for 14 years.” Keith will be holding a fundraiser for his book on the history of Port Macquarie surfing on Friday night, August 17, at the Chop ’n Chill in Port Macquarie. Copies of The Wayward Surfer will be on sale. For more information about Keith McMullen and his books, visit https://www.keithmcmullen. net

Controversy surrounds Oxley party • From Page 1 Port Macquarie-Hastings Council however has said it was “a great opportunity” to celebrate and recognise the bicentenary milestone with live music and local offerings on the Town Green and Town Square. Group Manager Economic Development Liesa Davies has said Council acknowledged Tastings on Hastings has been an important fixture on the local events calendar and added the bicentenary celebration would retain several events popular with the community. “The community is encouraged to set aside the weekend of October 26-28 to ensure they don’t miss this wonderful bicentenary celebration,” she said. The celebrations begin next month activities at Mount Seaview Resort including guided bushwalks, 4WD trips and talks on John Oxley. Author Rob Tickle will launch his book, marking the bicentenary of Oxley’s journey through the Hastings Valley, at Mount Seaview on Friday, September 21. Oxley and his 15-man team of explorers camped at, and named, Mount Seaview. Tickle’s book, which contains 80 photographs and maps, took two years to produce and will be on sale following the launch. A performance at Douglas Vale Vineyard on October 14 will retell the story of John Oxley’s journey to Port Macquarie from Bathurst and back to Sydney. Tickets are for sale only through the Glasshouse and include a glass of wine, snacks and a tasting of Heritage Port. “But allocating a few thousand dollars and asking individuals and groups to plan their own celebration is not really appropriate for such an important person in Port Macquarie’s history,” insists Janelle. “Let’s hope they are better prepared in 2021.”

Grants get seniors online

LOCAL community organisations are being encouraged to apply for a share of up to $20 million in funding to help get seniors online. Federal Member for Lyne Dr David Gillespie said the grants of up to $50,000 were being made available for local organisations to apply to deliver free digital skills training to people over 50 as part of the Federal Coalition Government’s Be Connected program. “By joining the Be Connected Network, organisations help seniors in the local community to maintain their independence and keep connected with family and friends,” Dr Gillespie said. “Participants in the program get free, personalised face-to-face coaching and access to interactive tutorials and resources.”

Well done for taking stand CONGRATULATIONS on taking the stand (From the Heart, August 9) that so many women face being sole parents. They are treated with distrust and to have to be interrogated by such a narrow-minded person is hard to imagine. Maybe one day this person may be in the same position - we like to think. Get a male friend to help and I bet you will have a house in no time. Being a single person I too faced this and

women were the worst to judge, not knowing the circumstances. Best of luck Sandy. Hope soon someone out there will help you and you will find something special that you and your family will enjoy for years to come. Good luck you deserve it all. Keep up the good work on a great read with enthusiasm. Anne Pope Port Macquarie

THE retirement of Mr Hartsuyker, as Member for Cowper, is a cause for celebration in our electorate. His claimed “achievements” are mythical. He takes credit for the Kempsey Bypass and duplication of the Pacific Highway, yet when this was proposed by the Rudd government in 2009, Mr Hartsuyker decried it as “another example of Labor’s reckless spending” and he actually voted against it. When the Kempsey Bypass was opened in 2013, Mr Hartsuyker did not attend, although Rob Oakeshott from the Lyne electorate who was

instrumental in the Highway funding and other things did. Mr Hartsuyker also voted against $40million for Kempsey Hospital, $2.2m for Crescent Head Surf Club building and $23m for the 23 local schools in our electorate, yet was happy to attend the openings of many of those projects. Mr Hartsuyker fails to take credit for many other things, such as the high unemployment rate, the extreme disadvantage, lack of environmental action and high power prices in this electorate. Thumbs Up TO George Miedecke, Paul and Greg at the Miedecke Motor Group for their professional and whole-hearted support in helping me to resolve an issue I had with a car manufacturer concerning a car I bought new. They were great in every respect and can be trusted to stand by the customer. They all helped to negotiate a successful resolution I could not have achieved by myself. Yes! Customer service IS alive and well! I will definitely return as a confident customer given the incredible support they gave to me. Again, thank you to all concerned. TO the local club who spent a fortune on renovations and yet couldn’t afford a pair of tongs to put the fruit in the drinks! The girl behind the bar used her hands then took my money with the same hand. This seems to happen regularly at various food outlets as well - even when it’s not busy. I won’t accept it if they aren’t wearing gloves. It’s too easy to pick up illnesses especially if your susceptible. Be aware and remind them that it’s actually against the law.

“Your customer service was second to none and your welcoming, friendly attitude won us over in a heartbeat” position at the Kempsey office for six months, with no success, I’ve made the decision to close it. I’m disappointed but the reality is, it’s no longer viable. When I come to Kempsey, on either a Wednesday or Thursday I catch up with clients at their business, I don’t sit in the office. I will be pounding the pavements and popping my head in to say ‘hi’ but if you need to see me on my travels, feel free to book an appointment and I’ll be there! As you can imagine, the next few weeks are going to be hectic organising the packing and unpacking of a house and then backing it up with the office fitout and relocation. Please bear with us, as always we’ll be doing our best and Your Local Independent will be out each Thursday – no matter what. Reality is, none of it should affect anyone I’ll just be running round like a headless chook!

RECENTLY, a magpie was seen hanging in the branch of a Norfolk Island tree at North Haven. The Council, a local vet, Wires and the fire brigade were all rung. An hour and a half later the bird was still tangled. It had a nest nearby so not only was it getting distressed but also the young chicks. No one we rang had come to help it. One response was: ‘It is only a magpie’.

Thumbs Up TO all the doctors, nursing staff, and ambos from Port Macquarie Base Hospital, thank you! I was recently hospitalised with a stroke and their immediate expert medical attention has had a major effect on my successful recovery. Also, a big thank you to the transition care staff who have provided amazing home care support.

Thumbs Up

TO Port Macquarie and Tacking Point Lions for jointly donating through the District to Lions Clubs in droughtaffected areas to disperse to locals to purchase food and necessities from local businesses, helping both groups.

CONGRATULATIONS to Kempsey Shire Council on a most informative and wonderful community tour of Boyters Lane Wetlands Redevelopment. Special thanks to Ron Kennedy for dedicated and positive leadership.

FROM the Heart – August 16th, 2018. Wow! Thank you all for the positive responses regarding our ‘rental crises’. I received numerous text messages, emails and phone calls from property owners and real estate agents offering us properties to rent and also readers sharing their experiences about trying to rent. Apparently I’m not the only one who has found the experience a hideous ordeal of astronomical proportions – a sad reflection on the industry. Thankfully, I’m pleased to announce – we have been approved for a house and it fits our brief perfectly. A huge thanks to Nicky Davies and the team at Patterson’s Real Estate for your help – Nicky, you are awesome! Your customer service was second to none and your welcoming, friendly attitude won us over in a heartbeat. Honestly a 10/10! Now for the hard bit, packing and moving. Moving is going to be high on the agenda for the next few weeks – not only are we moving house, we’re relocating the Port office during the first weekend in September - where we’ll be able to manage our production, admin and distribution under one roof. Parking will be a breeze and access to the building will be much easier for some of our regular clients – the new office will be open from 9am Monday September 3. The move will also open up some exciting opportunities to expand our services and community involvement – I’ll keep you posted. Unfortunately, after trying to fill the sales

Revved up for a classic By SUE PATERICK KEMPSEY’S Greenhill Speedway will roar into action later this month when the Macleay District Motorcycle Club hosts the 28th annual Akubra Classic Dirt Track National. This prestigious event attracts the best riders in the country from the local region as well as interstate. These agile competitors will battle it out on Sunday, August 26, to win a share of over $7,000 in prizemoney and an iconic Akubra Hat. According to Club President Trent O’Donnell, the Akubra Classic is one of the longest running and most recognised events in the sport. “It is the biggest event our club hosts on an annual basis,” he said. “The level of support we have received from within the local community in terms of sponsorship to ensure the event continues year in year out really is quite humbling.” Akubra have been the club’s key partner and part of the event’s success for the last 28 years. “We are very fortunate to have had this support from an Australian iconic brand and local business for such a long period of time,” Trent said. This year local firm, DGI Trading, has also come on board alongside Akubra as a presenting partner. “It really goes to show the way our local businesses, big and small, rally behind our club to enable these large events to take place and showcase our facility, the sports’ best riders and what the Macleay Valley has to offer.” The Akubra Classic is also the only national meeting that combines both the senior and junior racers in full competition from the 50cc Demonstration Class through to the Pro 450

The host Club will be well represented in all classes with 2018 NSW Champions Jarryd Oram and Sam Davies set to contest the event. Dale Austin is fresh from her third place win in the NSW Championship and will represent the Club in the Women’s Open class, as well as mix it up with the boys on the day.

Other well-known riders ready to fight all challengers are James Chapman, Alec Hurst, Marty McNamara, Michael Kirkness along with Club Vice President, and seven-time winner of the Akubra Hat, Michael Booth. Racing will start from 10am on Sunday August 26 and there will be a full canteen serving food and drinks.

The entry fee is $10 and free for children under 12. “So why not grab a spot on the hill and enjoy some of the best racing the sport has to offer,” said Trent. For more information on the event contact Trent O’Donnell at mail@mdmcc.com.au or on 0418 655 132.

CANBERRA CONNECTIONS With Dr David Gillespie Federal MP for Lyne

Reflexologist Bernadette Kesby also restores motor bike wheels, plays violin and is a certified-organic grower of garlic, ginger and turmeric

Plenty of strings to Bernadette’s life By SUE PATERICK THERE is nothing reflexologist, Bernadette Kesby, likes more than relaxing her clients during a treatment and then watching them float out of the door like a bubble on a summer breeze. She likes to ensure they are calm and comfortable because relaxation is an important part of reflexology. “When a person is relaxed it helps them to heal themselves,” Bernadette said. “I love my job because it helps people.” In fact, her clients are so impressed some come back just to let her know how good they feel or how well they slept through the night. “I love it when people tell me their pain is gone.” The Macleay Valley local completed her qualifications 15 years ago at the NSW School of Natural Medicine. She explained that reflexology is an ancient remedy that helps heal many ailments like headaches, sciatica, back and neck pain, sleeplessness, knee pain, sore feet, emotional trauma and so much more. Its origins go back thousands of years to

China, India and Egypt. According to Bernadette, reflexology works on the hormones, circulation, the endocrine system, nervous system and the body’s meridians and acupressure pathways and much more. “I believe reflexology is a healing gift that helps your own body to heal itself,” she said. “It covers the whole body and works on everything within the body through the feet and hands.” Reflexology also dispels stress and anxiety and helps to energise, revitalise and generate good health. Bernadette, however, has more strings to her bow than healing hands and is the first violinist in the Silver Strings Orchestra. Together with 11 other dedicated musicians she hopes to perform at the Anglican Church Hall in Kempsey on the first Sunday in November but this is yet to be confirmed. For the past 29 years she has also restored motorcycle wheels and her business is called Kempsey Motorcycle Wheel Works. Bernadette learnt the trade from her father, Arthur Squires, and has worked on many types of bikes, including BSAs and Indians. This unusual skill involves making wheel

spokes, cutting them and then threading them. “It’s a very challenging job,” she said. Some of the bike wheels Bernadette has restored have ended up in museums, some as far away as Vietnam. For the past decade Bernadette, together with her husband Peter, has been a certified-organic grower of garlic, ginger and turmeric. They sell their produce at Kempsey Riverside markets on the first Saturday of each month, and at the Gladstone Hub when this historic riverside town holds its monthly market every third Sunday. Being an organic farmers is hard work but Bernadette reckons it is also enjoyable. “It’s very rewarding to be able to go out into your garden and harvest your own food,” she said. Bernadette has called the beautiful Macleay Valley home for 25 years and adores the place. “I love the Macleay because it has the most beautiful beaches in the world and I’ve travelled to 16 countries,” she said. “Its people are also so generous and kind.” Bernadette’s clinic, Advanced Reflexology, is located at 12 Lawson Street in Frederickton and is open on Tuesdays and Thursdays by appointment only.

AS the drought continues to hit eastern Australia pretty hard, Commonwealth and State Governments are continuing to respond with additional measures to assist our farmers. Further measures have been announced by the Prime Minister, The Nationals Leader and the Agriculture Minister to assist farming families with immediate additional financial support to help them and their communities during this drought. The Federal Coalition Government has announced two lump sum supplementary payments to the Farm Household Allowance. Farming families will now receive up to a total of $28,000 a year in assistance following a boost of up to $12,000 per annum to FHA for eligible households. Thousands more farming families will be able to access the FHA as the Coalition increases the net asset threshold cap from $2.6 million to $5 million. Last weekend’s announcements bring the total support provided by our government to households and communities in drought to $576 million, with more to come. The $190 million package of immediate relief, including support for mental health services, has been welcomed by many rural organisations in that it is another important measure to assist farming families doing it tough. These extra FHA payments will help get cash in the door so families can pay their bills and get their kids to school. This will flow through to small businesses in areas severely impacted. Owning expensive farm equipment doesn’t pay the bills, and so raising the net assets cap for access to the FHA to $5 million will help farmers who have little cash flow. These threshold changes mean an additional 8000 farmers could become eligible for FHA support. Additional measures announced include: • An extra $5 million in the Rural Financial Counselling Service, which will provide additional support for farmers - particularly those applying for the FHA for the first time. • $15 million to help the Foundation for Rural and Regional Renewal with small grants for not-for-profit community groups. • $11.4 million in mental health support initiatives including: • Additional funding for Primary Health Networks in drought affected areas. • Those accessing counselling via Skype will no longer have their first appointment in person. • An Empowering Communities program that allows local communities to tailor local mental health responses to their needs. • Funding will be provided to ReachOUT to go out into drought affected communities and raise awareness of their youth and children’s counselling services group.

FROM THE MAYOR A weekly conversation with Mayor Peta Pinson In my role there are many opportunities to engage with our community, from our pre-school children, those studying for careers, starting families and building homes right through to those of us in the latter years of life. Hearing the many different stories, experiences and ideas is definitely one of the most enjoyable aspects of being Mayor, and it is this diversity that contributes to us having such an inclusive and connected community. Recently I’ve spent time with a number of our local young people, and have had inspiring discussions about how they see our community now, and into the future. Our youth have a real sense of pride in our region, they have a real passion for what they believe our community needs to focus on, how we can build a better society, and how we can create

opportunities for us all to live, love and grow together. I’ve spoken before about how we are an older community, with many of us in the over 50s age bracket ... we are grandparents, great-grandparents and even great-greatgrandparents! As we grow older, we worry about the younger generations, what the future holds for them and what our world might look like as they grow older. We need to work closely together now, for a better community tomorrow. There’s a lot of work being done by Council to support our youth, ensuring they have a voice and the opportunity to contribute their ideas now, and into the future. We’ve recently received an award for our ongoing commitment to Youth Week, and our local Youth Advisory Councils are run by young people, for young people … and they do a fantastic job in ensuring young people have a voice, and

pmhc.nsw.gov.au most importantly they are heard. We’ve also recently completed a local skills audit, which has helped us identify the jobs our community needs now, and so we can plan for the jobs we’ll need in the future. There’s also great work being done by our local youth groups and schools to help young people be more actively involved in community life, and opportunities for them to be inspired and contribute … such as the recent Luminosity Youth Summit which was held in Port Macquarie. Investing in, and taking the time to listen to our youth is extremely important, and I’m really looking forward to being involved in more conversations and encourage you all to take the time to chat with our community’s future leaders. Until next week, Peta

Port centre of homeless pitch We need a “coherent national strategy and a long term commitment from government to build new social and affordable homes

MISSION Australia CEO James Toomey has used Port Macquarie as part of his launching pad to end homelessness in this country by 2030. Mr Toomey was in Port recently to push that message and to urge a national approach to homelessness. “Every individual can help with ending homelessness by volunteering, raising awareness of the issue of homelessness, and getting involved in events and organisations that help the homeless,” said Mr Toomey. A 2016 figure showed that Port Macquarie had 280 homeless men, women, and children living without a safe and permanent place to call home. “People assume that moving to country towns that living will be easier,” Mr Toomey said. “Although the cost of buying a house might be more affordable, the trouble is maintaining permanent employment. Losing a job can result in being homeless very quickly. “Domestic violence, financial situations, and mental illness are still major reasons for why people end up homeless, but one of the other areas we have seen is with young people leaving home care when they turn 18 years old.” Mission Australia Port Macquarie has been assisting locals with the Family and Carer Mental Health Program, Partners in Recovery, Mission Australia Housing, Parents Next, Youth on Track, and Brighter Futures – a voluntary program which helps families provide support for their children. “We know that homelessness is a big issue here in this region and across the nation,” explains Mr Toomey. “I am not at all surprised that the homeless figures have increased to more than 116,000 in Australia. It’s what our services and others across the sector have experienced for years.”

Mission Australia CEO James Toomey recently visited Port Macquarie Mr Toomey is urging all levels of government to end homelessness by 2030 and develop a national plan. “It is an international embarrassment caused by the long-term absence of a national co-ordinated plan and the lack of a serious commitment to building new social and affordable homes,” Mr Toomey said. “We cannot afford to ignore this situation any longer. Safe and secure housing provides the platform for children to attend school, adults to work, people to be healthy and communities to thrive. “We know what works. We need a coherent national strategy and a long term commitment from government to build new social and affordable homes. This requires commitment from all governments the corporate sector,

charities and individuals. “To even begin to house those who are in need, we require the Commonwealth and State and Territory governments to commit to the building of 300,000 new social homes and 200,000 affordable rental properties across Australia by 2030. “This must include measures to harness private sector investment and ensure investors have surety around the future viability of their investments through long-term and consistent subsidy from governments. “But it also requires localised housing targets to ensure new developments meet the needs of all the community.” Mr Toomey says that the national plan must address the reasons for individual homelessness including family violence, poverty, disability

and mental health issues. “Our evidence shows a Housing First model works to address chronic homelessness, ensuring homeless people are rapidly rehoused and then supported to maintain that housing by dealing with the underlying contributors. Of course, such models only work if there are homes for people to move into.” ‘Everybody’s Home’ is a new campaign that helps people in all situations from struggling to find shelter each night, to looking at buying a first home. For more information about Mission Australia and the ‘Everybody’s Home’ campaign, visit www.missionaustralia.com.au/ and http://everybodyshome.com.au

Traineeship is a key pathway STARTING a new work role as a trainee can allow for lots of flexible skills development, as well as giving employers the ability to adapt their workplace to suit new workers. Traineeships combine paid employment with on-the-job training that leads to qualifications and skills for staff who might otherwise not find the right pathway to longterm work. If you know someone who is wondering how to get started in a new field of work, exploring traineeships would be a good way to help them find the support needed to ensure successful skills development in a staged way. Employers are entitled to receive incentives for employing a trainee, and the college offers a wide of traineeships in many vocations. These include: Indigenous Land Management; Business; Hospitality; Retail; Warehousing Operations; Nail technology; Screen and Media; Individual Support for Aged and Disabled; Mental Health Support; Community Services; and Early Childhood Education and Care. Some people feel overwhelmed by starting in a new field of work, so a traineeship can allow a structured and supported pathway to new skills development. And the support for employers means a more secure placement in times when funds are tight. If you would like to know more about the Traineeship programs on offer at the college, please contact our Training Manager, Dennis Owen on 02-65837288, or call in to 77 Hastings River Drive. You can see the full range of programs at the college on our website www.portace. com.au.

We are winning the ‘litter war’ NSW Cuts Litter By A Third: NSW litter has dropped by 37 per cent since 2013 and Return and Earn is responsible for a one third reduction in its type of drink container litter. According to new litter figures for NSW from Keep Australia Beautiful, total litter volume has reduced by 37 per cent from 2013-14 which means the state is 3% off its litter volume reduction target. Takeaway container litter has reduced by 19 per cent from 2016-17 and print and advertising litter has reduced by 35 per cent. Locally our community has embraced the Return and Earn scheme with more than 3.4 million containers collected at the four Reverse Vending Machine (RVM) locations in Port Macquarie and Lake Cathie. A breakdown of figures shows that as of Monday August 6 collections results are: • 201,898 collected at Lake Cathie Woolworths RVM; • 332,631 collected at Lake Innes Village RVM; • 398,771 collected at Growers Market RVM; • 2,523,169 collected at Settlement City RVM. Overall, there has been a 33 per cent drop in Return and Earn eligible drink containers in the litter stream since November 2017 – the month before the scheme started, on December 1.

On average three million containers a day are being collected at return points. More than 560 million containers have been processed by Return and Earn so far and as more collection points are rolled out, these results can only increase and the amount of litter will decrease. Woman of the Year: Local residents are being encouraged to highlight brilliant women in our community with nominations now open for the 2019 NSW Women of the Year Awards. The awards recognise women who have demonstrated excellence in business and society or made outstanding contributions, both personally and professionally. APPLICATIONS are now open for the fourth round of the federal government’s Stronger Communities Program which makes grants of up to $20,000 to help our great community groups deliver small capital works projects. I urge groups with plans that are ready to implement, and which have co-funding available, to move quickly on seeking an Expression of Interest from my office to get their application underway. The always busy Greater Port Macquarie Tourism Association received $10,658 towards the new digital scoreboard at the Port Macquarie Regional Stadium. Port Macquarie Hastings Council contributed, in another example of what can be achieved when governments work together, and the scoreboard is now operational. The Telegraph Point Community Association, a great little group of volunteers, received $7,931 towards an already admirable renovation effort, aimed at making their town hall an important social hub again. You can get your EOI by phoning my Coffs Harbour office (66526233), my Port Macquarie office (65832075), the Toll Free line (1300301793) or by emailing me at Luke.Hartsuyker.MP@aph.gov.au.

Something sweet in sugar origin SUGAR has been getting a bad press lately. Those in the sugar industry must be getting worried, although most don’t show it. Added sugar contains no essential nutrients and is bad for your teeth. But your body does need carbohydrates, which are broken down into sugar in your body. This sugar is essential for your body to create energy to survive. The source of sugar is sanskrit, where the substance was originally meant grit. It came into Arabic as sukkar and into English as saccharin. It had several spellings, such as cuquere, zuchre, sukere, suigur, sewger, seukere and suggar. Sugar comes mainly from sugar cane and sugar beet and it dates back to 1299, or at least that is as far back as I could go. Shakespeare had a go at it. He said: “Honestie coupled to beautie, is to haue honey a sawce to Sugar”. Sugar was known in India before it reached Europe. Then it became a luxury product. To spread sugar among trees is to catch moths. What you do with the moths then is anybody’s guess, but I suppose somebody knows. Sugar was and is a drug in the United States.

my

LAURIE BARBER

Sugar has been a source of other words. For instance, money, narcotic drug, a term of endearment, a chemical compound, with other nouns and with special combinations. Sugarallie is a liquorice, sugar baker is a confectioner, sugar bush is a plantation, sugar candied is coated with fine white sugar, sugar cane is the chief source of manufactured sugar, sugar chest is a chest for sugar, sugared is impregnated with sugar, sugared pumpkin is sugar coated, sugar loaf is moulded mass of hard refined sugar, sugar maple is a North American tree which yields maple sugar, sugar plate is sugar in the form of a flat plate, sugar plum is sweetmeat, sugar sop is a dish composed of sweetened slices of bread and so we go on. But sugar comes with several other words, such as sugar box, sugar bread, sugar cake, sugar lime, sugar water and sugar daddy. Then there are other words, such as sugar

apple, sugar grass, sugar melon, sugar tree and sugar pumpkin. And no diabetes? There was a sweetener, honey, and when that became relatively common diabetes was recognised as a disease, according to Peter Jones in his book What the Romans really gave the English Language. Sugar features in many cookery books. I like the line in Chambers’ Cyclopedia Supplement: “Coarse Sugar, in which there is more oil than in refined sugar, is recommended as a good medicine.” That was written in 1753. It might still be correct, for all I know. “Just a spoonful of sugar makes the medicine go down.” That’s a line from the song, but what if the sugar is the medicine? I have to admit I haven’t read any of the Harry Potter books, although I have bought a few as Christmas and birthday presents. But I have been told that treacle tart is a favourite dessert with Harry and with many others in the United Kingdom. I haven’t tried the recipe of the tart that Harry likes, but it is made of golden syrup, a by-product of sugar-making. lauriebarber.com;lbarber@midcoast.com.au.

Tender Centre is BIG on value WHEN Jim Wardrope opened Kempsey Macleay Tender Centre almost three years ago, he started with 200 items from his own collection in much smaller premises. Today, at new larger premises at 85 West Street, South Kempsey, Jim has about 20,000 items to be sold by tender. “About two and a half years ago I started with 200 items and six weeks later had 3000 items in the shed,” recalls Jim. “But now we’ve had to move to bigger premises as we couldn’t cope with volume of stuff being brought in.” Kempsey Macleay Tender Centre has joined forces with Kempsey Auctions and Kempsey Antiques to make it the largest secondhand outlet on the east coast, with over 4000sqm of stock from antiques to building materials, tools, cars, boats, trailers, camper trailers, caravans and household items. “And check out our prices on new whitegoods such as Teco fridges, freezers, dryers and washing machines all with factory warranty,” says Jim. “We are also agents for Nylex water tanks and Trailers Australia for new trailers and trailer parts. “If you are into recycling, this is the place to bring your goods to sell.” Goods are displayed in two sheds the size of Bunnings and with a big concrete area. Items are dropped off Monday to Friday with five staff ensuring the process is smooth and Jim at the helm helping sellers get the best price for their goods. “I will help them set the reserve on their

Kempsey Macleay Tender Centre has about 20,000 items to be sold by tender goods; tell them if they are asking too much and likewise tell them if they are asking too little,” says Jim. “Buyers can buy for the reserve plus buyers’ premium or can negotiate for a lower price and we will endeavour to talk to the owner and get it cheaper.” Jim said all items had a reserve except for new items such as fridges, washing machines and trailers. “Basically, all items are negotiable,” he said. And there is no telling what people will be chasing from one week to the next.

“One week it could be solar panels, then it could be trailers or lounges,” says Jim. Buyers and browsers just never know what will pop up. “I guess the most unusual items I have for sale is a new coffin,” says Jim. “It was used by previous owners as a coffee table, who had plans to use it later, but now it’s been returned. Still unused obviously! “It’s been sold twice so far and is back again for $600 which is pretty cheap compared to the thousands people pay an undertaker.” Buyers can leave goods on the floor for 12

weeks and are then asked to remove their items. “They have another two weeks and after that, if they don’t take their goods; some forget and some can’t be bothered; it goes into a non-reserve auction to recover storage fees,” says Jim. “If I think it’s something that will sell at auction, I’ll put it with no reserve and I might get $20 or I might get $200. “If I don’t think it’s worth selling, I’ll donate to the Salvos or Lifeline or Vinnies.” Stock comes from as far away as Armidale, Coffs Harbour and more locally at Laurieton. “We can pick up for a small fee,” says Jim. There are some goods, however, Jim won’t accept as he doesn’t believe it would be a fair sale. “I won’t accept jewellery without a valuation certificate, or mobile phones, in case they have been stolen,” he says. “But otherwise, I will help people sell anything.”

The Australian Bee Gees Show tribute band with Michael Clift (centre). They will be performing at the Glasshouse on Wednesday, August 22

Ultimate praise for tribute band THE Australian Bee Gees Show tribute band have received the ultimate compliment – the thumbs up from surviving Bee Gee Barry Gibb. The Australian Bee Gees tribute band has performed more than 6500 shows in over 60 countries and is now on its way to Australia – and Port Macquarie - as part of the ‘Direct from Vegas’ world tour. “We’ve had feedback from Barry and his management and it was very positive and they thanked us for doing the show with respect,” said Michael Clift, who actually portrays Barry Gibb in the show. “He said we were doing a good job of it and to keep up the good work and keep treating the legacy with the respect it deserves.” The tribute band from Australia has been

together 22 years and has spent 7 years performing in Vegas. Throughout the years they have earnt the attention and respect from Bee Gees fans. “We have a good time and we try to keep that Bee Gees spirit alive,” said Michael. “There are definitely pressures with being in a tribute band. The audience expectations are always important and to keep the show the way The Bee Gees band would want it done. The fans gave us a hard time at the start because they are defensive, they love The Bee Gees and they are very protective of their legacy. “We had some really great feedback from Terri Bridge who is the President of The Bee Gees Official Fan Club in America and that was a huge deal getting the green light from her and

she’s now a great friend of ours. “The fans have really warmed to us now too and we have had some really fantastic feedback, but they will always tell us if we are doing a good or bad job.” The show will be presented in two parts and will feature all of the hits including Michael Clift’s favourite song ‘To Love Somebody’ and songs such as ‘Stayin’ Alive’, ‘Night Fever’, and ‘How Deep Is Your Love’. The Australian Bee Gees Show was recently voted Best Tribute Show in Las Vegas by the prestigious Las Vegas Review Journal and has made the top 10 in the ‘Overall Best Show’ category. They were also honoured to receive the coveted Entertainer of the Year award for 2015

at the prestigious Win Win Headliners Bash. The Australian Bee Gees show was also the first Australian band to perform 1000 shows headlining on the Famous Las Vegas Strip and with 2250 shows already under their belt, they look forward to continuing their success in ‘Sin City’. “The thing I love the most about The Bee Gees is their song writing and their unique sound,” Michael explains. Come and see the Australian Bee Gees Show on Wednesday August 22 at the Glasshouse Port Macquaire. Tickets are $57.50 for adults and $52.50 for members, concession, and groups. Tickets can be purchased from www. glasshouse.org.au or by calling the Glasshouse on (02) 6581 8888.

The victorious Grade 3 Pennant side from the Port Macquarie Panthers Men’s Bowling Club

Panthers taste first success

THE Grade 3 Pennant side of the Port Macquarie Panthers Men’s Bowling Club have won the Zone 14 Pennant Final, defeating a strong Park Beach outfit by 63 – 61 at the Urunga Bowling Club. The Panthers side, playing out of the Hibbard Sports Club, had never won a Zone title. The win signified a first and the right to have a crack at the State title in Dubbo between August 17-19. The Panthers, formerly the Port Macquarie R.S.L. Club were not even favoured to win their section let alone the Zone, but the players put in a great effort during the season. A twice postponed match saw them win that and the normal round game on the same weekend against the North Haven side. As rank outsiders and underdogs, the Panthers fought hard every game, succumbing to the Lake Cathie side on two occasions, eventually meeting them in the very last sectional game to decide the winner. This game, played at the Lake Cathie Club, saw a great deal of concentration, skill and luck with supporters and members cheering on their respective sides. With two rinks finished, the last rink would decide the outcome and the Panthers only

needed a draw to secure the sectional win. The scores were level at 58-all as the Lake Cathie skip played his last bowl to win the day, but unfortunately he missed his chance and the Panthers skipper didn’t have to play his last bowl. The Port Panthers had won their section. Next step was the play off in the Zone Final and the sectional win was celebrated very nicely at their home Club. All players looked forward to the journey to Urunga, having booked accommodation to stay overnight no matter what the result. Arriving early, all settled down to a coffee before having a practice on the green. Supporters, members and the opposition, Park Beach, soon turned up and the scene was set for a good tussle. All game the scoreboard was close, every shot was watched, applauded and flags waived until, like the sectional game, it came down to the last rink. Panthers had a 12 shot margin on one rink, had drawn the other and the last rink see-sawed with the overall scoreboard margin being one or two shots, Panthers behind. With three ends to go, the Panthers scored to draw level and the crowd became silent and then vocal.

CLASSIFICATION:

The second last end saw Panthers score one to lead the way. The last end was going to determine the Zone winner and you could feel the tenseness in the air as the Panthers held shot. The Park Beach skipper let loose with a drive and missed and the Panthers didn’t improve their score at the head with their last bowl, so now it was down to the Park Beach skip and when he missed again, celebrations began for the Panthers, Zone 14 winners of the Grade 3 Pennants. A celebratory dinner and drinks was held at the Urunga Bowling Club that night with thanks given to the Club for their hospitality and to Park Beach for a great game and a big thank you to all the wonderful supporters and Hibbard Sports Club. The Panthers side is now preparing for the event in Dubbo and will be giving it their best shot to bring home the flag. Congratulations to Paul Crosariol, Jim Cradock, John Wright, Brian Bradley, Neville Wright, Ray Brittian, John Hallsworth, John O’Neill, Jack Shales, Mick McCloskey, Jim Scott, Ken Errington, Bernie Biddle and Manager Sharon Wright. footytips

Pressure back on Broncos You can almost hear Craig Bellamy from here. The passionate Melbourne coach would have been livid with their loss to the Sharks last weekend, their second on the trot and exactly what he didn’t want with the finals so close. The Eels on the other hand have woken from their slumber and have decided to cause some late havoc, running riot over the Dragons last weekend. The Storm are back at home and will be back to their best. Your Local Independent tips: Storm Panthers v Knights (Saturday, August 18, 3pm, Panthers Stadium, Penrith): Another top eight side against an also-ran, but no foregone conclusion. Penrith really struggled to get across the line ahead of the Titans last weekend. The Knights are seriously considering resting miracle kid Kayln Ponga. The Panthers are at home and have everything on the line. Your Local Independent tips: Panthers Wests Tigers v Dragons (Saturday, August 18, 5.30pm, Leichhardt Oval, Sydney): A massive game for both teams. If the Tigers keep winning they can make the eight, while the Dragons’ season has hit free fall. St George Illawarra have injury concerns which have not helped, but to get lapped by the Eels last weekend is an indication that something is seriously wrong. The Tigers have the advantage of a parochial home crowd at the historic Leichhardt Oval. The bookies have them slightly ahead, but if the Dragons are to make any sense of what has, in the main, been a very good season, they need to win now. Your Local Independent tips: Dragons

Sharon Griffiths

Sharks v Cowboys (Saturday, August 18, 7.35pm, Southern Cross Group Stadium, Cronulla): The Sharks are heavy favourites to win this one and that should be the result after the Cowboys spent so much gas beating the Broncos last weekend. The Sharks have been there-abouts all season and could climb into the top four come finals. They also have key players, who are likely to bow out after this season – Paul Gallen and Luke Lewis – so there is a lot of emotion flowing through at the Sharks. Your Local Independent tips: Sharks Bulldogs v Warriors (Sunday, August 19, 2pm, ANZ Stadium, Sydney): The Warriors should be able to put the Dogs away comfortably, but you never know which Warriors team is going to turn up. They have crept ahead of the Broncs and are in seventh place, and with such a tightly packed table you never know where they could end up in three weeks. The Dogs have some good recent form, beating the Tigers and Brisbane before being ordinary against Manly last weekend. Your Local Independent tips: Warriors Raiders v Roosters (Sunday, August 19, 4.10pm, GIO Stadium, Canberra): The Roosters are the team with the most finals momentum and have found the rails run to sneak into the ladder lead. They have a couple of players out injured - Jared WaereaHargreaves and Luke Keary – but looked awesome in their top of the table showdown with the Rabbits last weekend and are unlikely to stumble here. “ So what sort “

THERE is no doubt this is one of the most competitive NRL seasons to date. With just three rounds to go in the season proper there is no clear leader, top four or even top eight. The interest in this round is that six of the clashes are between top eight sides and clubs out of the top eight. So what sort of mischief can the bottom sides conjure. Try to pick a winner! Broncos v Rabbitohs (Thursday, August 16, 7.50pm, Suncorp Stadium, Brisbane): Wow, what a game to start the weekend. Both teams desperately needing a win for finals momentum and both teams coming off tough losses last weekend. There is no doubt the pressure is on the Broncs. They have fallen to bottom eight sides in their last two outings and have to cope with the major distraction of offfield dramas over coaching. It would be no surprise to see the Broncos hit back at home, but the Rabbits look a class above them. Your Local Independent tips: Rabbitohs Sea Eagles v Titans (Friday, August 17, 6pm, Lottoland, Sydney): Two teams out of the eight, but this will be a top game. Manly climbed over the Dogs last weekend while the Titans should have beaten the Panthers, but got the wobbles with the finish line in sight. Both teams are on 16 points, but a couple more losses and either could finish with the spoon. The bookies have Manly as heavy favourites, but the Titans are due for another upset. Your Local Independent tips: Titans Storm v Eels (Friday, August 17, 7.55pm, AAMI Park, Melbourne):
