Just not good enough
awful having to “hangIt’soutside a shop,
“
hoping a shop assistant will notice
By CHRISTINA PARKIN
A SIMPLE trip to the local shops at Wauchope has become a nightmare for Steve Douglas. Since becoming a double amputee just over three months ago Steve soon found out how wheelchair unfriendly his local town is. “It’s awful having to hang outside a shop, hoping a shop assistant will notice and come out,” said Mr Douglas. “I’ve had to resort to knocking on the glass or yelling through the doorway.” Now confined to a wheelchair, Steve is realising that accessibility has not been a priority
for the town and is calling out for other users of wheelchairs, mobility scooters and even parents with prams, to register their concerns with the Wauchope Chamber of Commerce and Industry. “When my mobility scooter had battery problems, I could get my wheelchair onto the road, but could not get up the lip to return to my driveway,” he says. “Most of my side of Bain Street doesn’t even have a complete footpath. Wauchope On a wing and prayer ‘no go zone’ Bonny beachgoers unhappy with ‘drop-ins’ for wheelies By CHRISTINA PARKIN
PICTURE this – you are an 80-year-old taking a leisurely stroll along the beach and you get swooped on. However, this is no magpie, but a human paraglider, missing you by a couple of metres. Or this – you are enjoying a family day at the beach with your baby, and a paraglider comes from nowhere, landing within centimetres of your baby, before scooping up their canopy and running off without apology. This is the situation concerning a number of Bonny Hills’ residents who have experienced a number of ‘near misses’ while using the narrow 300m-long Bartlett’s Beach, below a popular paragliding launching site at the edge of Bartlett’s Reserve. The nature of paragliders catching the wind is such that it cannot be guaranteed to always land back at the launch site on the reserve and occasionally paragliders will need to land on the beach as a contingency. “A number of us have spoken to Port Macquarie Hastings Council (PMHC) on at least 3-4 occasions – it’s not like they don’t know,” explained concerned resident, Lucas Tuburgen. “But nothing seems to happen, and we are concerned that a similar incident is going to result in an actual accident, with everyone complaining that ‘something should have been done’ sooner. “We are simply asking that a moratorium be placed on the use of Bartlett’s Reserve by paragliders and hangliders until a proper safety assessment has been done.” Mr Tuburgen said consultations to date with PMHC representatives in August last year, were met with responses alluding to ‘broad’ engagement with the community in 2012, when a Master Plan for the Bonny Hills area was developed. However, with the increasing popularity of Bartlett’s Reserve, rated as an ‘intermediate level’ launching site for both paragliders and hangliders, the number of incidents and accidents were appearing to escalate, according to several concerned residents. Concerns were also raised regarding the adequacy of supervision of learner pilots and the documentation of incidents and accidents to the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA). “There appears to be no overt mechanism to report incidents and accidents which would help PMHC assess the dangers to other users of the area,” noted Mr Tubergen. “A sign containing such a contact number, as well as a warning to beach users that recreational aviation is being conducted and to use the beach with that in mind, would be useful. “The sign should also contain information of
The sign at Bartlett’s Beach which is likely to be improved to warn users of the dangers of the paragliders who use the launch site above the beach. the aviation rating for the launch site for those itinerant users that aren’t part of the Mid North Coast Flyers Club or the Hangliding Federation of Australia (HGFA),” suggested Mr Tubergen. One of the residents, Ms R (name withheld by request) has done extensive research into the issues, including collecting witness statements to ‘near misses’ and has forwarded these to council. Brett Coupland, from the national HGFA, stated that the local affiliated flying club has the responsibility to administer the CASA regulations relating to the reporting of incidents and accidents, training, supervision and flight rule requirements. “Deliberate swooping is a complete breach and criminal offence. If anyone is experiencing this behaviour, please film it on your phone and send the footage to us so we can deal with them,” he said. Other concerns have been addressed by Council’s Parks Management Officer, Mr Gary Hill, to users of Bartlett’s Reserve regarding the
inappropriate removal of vegetation and limbs of shrubs, which help stabilise the escarpment. Mr Liam Bulley, council employee and resident of Bonnie Hills remarked that he has observed both hang gliding and paragliding from Bartlett’s Reserve his whole life. Mr Bulley also remarked that damage to the escarpment below the launch site was also contributed to by beach users who climb up the hill, rather than taking the designated path. The local Mid North Coast Flying Club declined to comment on record with Your Local Independent, however a representative of the organisation did indicate that they were working closely with Port Macquarie Hastings Council and the Bonnie Hills Progress Association. Port Macquarie Hastings Council is currently reviewing all issues associated with commercial uses of public reserves. “Council is committed to continuing to work with all users of the space, to ensure it is managed appropriately, and can be enjoyed by our entire community,” concluded Mr Bulley.
• From Page 1 Julie Priest, Port Macquarie Hastings Council Place Facilitator and Access Sub-Committee member, had visited Steve Douglas and organised for Hastings Home Modifications to liaise to improve his ability to negotiate the lip of his driveway. “I was then told by Hastings Home Modifications I had to pay a third of the costs for the strip of rubber in the curb,” said an angry Mr Douglas. “I told them I can’t afford to do that and I have heard no more.” Ms Priest explained that buildings built before 2009 were not required to comply with the same Australian standard for accessibility for buildings built after 2009. “However, there are often simple changes, such as decluttering entrances and simple wedges that can make all the difference to the ability of wheels to enter premises.” When Council was asked for comment, the response was that Council is encouraging the Business Chamber to speak with business property owners regarding mobility access issues in the Wauchope CBD and to refer to the Port Macquarie-Hastings Pedestrian Access and Mobility Plan (PAMP) found at http:// www.pmhc.nsw.gov.au/Resident-Services/ Community/Accessibility-Disability/PedestrianAccess-and-Mobility-Plan In the PAMP for Wauchope, key pedestrian infrastructure actions include: • improved pedestrian crossings of High Street, between Cameron Street and Hastings Street, as part of an integrated streetscape plan • kerb extensions on High Street near Wauchope Hospital • pedestrian refuge crossings of Cameron Street near Young Street and Andrews Park footpath on Bain Street between Campbell Street and Hastings Street Rob Hamilton, President of the Wauchope Chamber of Commerce and Industry, remarked that this was the first time anyone had raised accessibility issues with the chamber. “I have seen shopkeepers take stuff out to customers on the footpath, and I think the whole town is a nightmare with respect to the lack of footpaths and the camber of some of the roads,” he said. “I’d like to invite anyone having access issues to write to the chamber. If you are affected in your ability to enter businesses or negotiate pathways or roads, please contact the Wauchope Chamber of Business and Industry by writing to PO Box 270 Wauchope 2446 or send an email to wauchopechamber@gmail.com

OF THE
Brought to you by
I DECIDED that I was going to try and achieve as much as possible on Saturday because I was home alone and had no distractions. Well, I did get quite a bit done around the house and thought I’d multi-task and get a few of the selfmaintenance jobs out of the way while I was at it. I have to say I was pretty chuffed with my efforts. Vacuumed while the hair colour was doing its thing. Sprayed the shower to clean it while I was in there etc. I was going swimmingly well and then I made just one tiny mistake! I slapped the facemask on and then decided to go the whole hog and do the hair removal thing. All good until I realised I needed something from downstairs and every door and window at the front of the house was wide open! And, said hair removal product says ‘Do not rub!’ Who are they kidding? I’m a 53 year old who has had 4 kids. I cannot move without something rubbing! I gingerly made my way down the stairs, bowed legged, so nothing would rub, wrapped in a towel, bleach in hair, white face mask on praying that none of the neighbours happened to look our way right at that moment. Thankfully neither the neighbours nor my regular JW visitors turned up and I made it back to the sanctuary of the bathroom unscathed. Once there I cracked up laughing from sheer relief and the ridiculousness of it all.

‘S’ plate is the right fit for seniors
IN response to Sandy Mackenzie’s ‘From the Heart’ column of March 10 relating to older drivers that can also be of danger on the road, I would like to say that I once wrote to the RMS to suggest an ‘S’ plate be given out to seniors at the age of 60+ to put on the car, much as 16-year-olds get an ‘L’ and the 17-20-year-olds get a ‘P’. The idea actually got media attention and was on the Sunrise program a few months ago, but got howled down as being discriminatory to older people.
This I believe is no more discriminatory than a 16-year-old being labelled with an ‘L’ or 1720-year- olds being targeted as inexperienced ‘P’ drivers. An ‘S’ just lets other drivers be aware that someone may not be as quick in their reactions or judgements as when they were young, that they may even drive a little slower or more cautiously and not just trying to annoy other drivers. It would actually avoid a lot of road rage when others realise that this
is an older driver who may deserve extra consideration and patience. As a driving instructor, I see teenagers all get labelled as terrible drivers with a ‘P’, which is unfair as I have been privileged to drive with some outstanding young people in this community whose driving skills and consideration would put most of us to shame. The better informed that all drivers on the road are to the nature of the others drivers’ skill levels on our roads, the better we can make
allowances for inexperience and/or age. ‘L’ and ‘P’ drivers are far more targeted by police and the general public for their driving, and they have to wear it. We mature drivers should be mature enough to wear it as well with an ‘S’. There is no disgrace in being older or younger, we just share different limitations. Brad Cameron Port Macquarie

Kempsey bin change ABOUT six months ago I took issue with Kempsey Council regarding the location of a waste pick up point in the Kundabung area. My concern is that the collection point is too close to a ‘T’ intersection and also requires residents to park on the road to utilise the facility. Both of these aspects are illegal as it contravenes traffic regulations. Not to mention it creates a very dangerous situation for other road users. The above concerns should be
and notify affected residents of the temporary change, while Kempsey Council decides what, if any other more appropriate solution, might be adopted. The subject inappropriate waste collection point is located on Smith’s Creek Road at the intersection with Crowther Drive and I would encourage affected residents to actively lobby Kempsey Council to rectify the situation before an avoidable incident is realised. Con Mylonas Kempsey
sufficient for council to initiate a timely response to resolve the problem. The only reaction by council to this point is to admit that there is a problem and a review of the situation will be initiated. Less than 30 metres from the present pick up point is an ideal spot to relocate the bins, providing off-road parking for residents and affording an appropriate distance from the intersection. I do not accept that it should take such an inordinate timeframe to relocate a dozen rubbish bins

Get your ducks in a row “ We keep the money local and it’s not the same beneficiaries every year
“
By CHRISTINA PARKIN ONE of the highlights of Easter Sunday in Port Macquarie for over 10 years is the annual Port Macquarie Lions’ Duck Races. Held along Koolunbung Creek, the sight of hundreds of yellow ducks bobbing along the creek after being dropped by a Mid Coast Crane, makes for quite a spectacle. Each year, several local charities benefit from the fun of the popular annual event, which is widely attended from key vantage points along the Koolunbung Creek between Coles Supermarket and south of the bridge at William Street. This year the major beneficiaries will be the Hastings Education Fund, who assist local students with tertiary education costs, Port Macquarie Marine Rescue and The Domestic and Family Violence Specialist Service, who help mothers and children affected by domestic violence. “We keep the money local and it’s not the same beneficiaries every year,” explained Lion John Fulton, organiser of this year’s event. “We are hoping to net about $15,000 and are very grateful for the sponsorship we receive from Laing and Simmons, Black Duck Brewery, Snap Printing and Mid Coast Cranes.”
Holding their ducks captive for the moment are Port Macquarie Lion’s Club members, John Fulton and Chris Greyling Racing will begin from 12.30pm (depending on the wind), with the business houses race, followed by the public race. “Sometimes the race is quite quick, depending on the speed of the current and wind, driving the ducks into a boom with a special race,” said Chris Greyling, another Lion helping with the event. For the business race, the ‘owners’ of the winning three ducks will be vying for five, two or one nights’ accommodation at Opal Cove in Coffs Harbour. Business houses can buy their $25 tickets directly by ringing 6583 2580 – only

100 years later we’re still knitting THE Mid North Coast (MNC) Refugee Support Group has put the call out for wool, patterns or completed knitted items for small children up to school age. It is hoped that last year’s successful drive for knitted items for Syrian refugees will be exceeded as Newcastle is about to receive some 7000 Syrian refugees for settlement in Australia. The knitted items collected last year were personally delivered to Berlin in Germany before Christmas and another load went to Sydney in February. The concept arises from the tradition that started in 1915 when women were knitting for soldiers in World War 1. This was captured when Australian artist, Grace CossingtonSmith, painted a portrait of her sister Madge knitting for the troops and depicted women’s contributions to the war effort. The MNC Refugee Support Group is looking to continue this tradition with donations of scarves, shawls, jumpers, mittens, beanies and socks knitted for children displaced by war in Syria to be sent to Newcastle by the end of April. Mavis Barnes, secretary of the MNC Refugee Support Group, says: “Last year’s response was very surprising and it indicates the strength of support for the Syrian refugees. “It was a marvellous response and we hope we can do the same again.” If you are able to assist, please contact Mavis Barnes by email at mavis.barnes@bigpond.com or phone her on 6559 4339 to organise a dropoff of knitted items. Alternatively, items can be dropped at Your Local Independent’s office on the corner of Gordon and Gore Streets in Port Macquarie. The group is also having a pre-loved goods stall at the Wauchope Markets on Saturday April 16 to raise funds for the refugees and any donations of these items can be coordinated with Krissa Wilkinson on 0429 854 733.

Grants on offer STATE MATTERS
With Leslie Williams State Member for Port Macquarie
SENIORS Grants Awarded: Seniors can look forward to local celebrations during the 2016 NSW Seniors Festival in April. Two local groups are among 200 organisations across the state to receive grants from the NSW Government to hold events and activities that will help the community celebrate the festival. Congratulations to the Port Macquarie Historical Society receiving $500 for their Happy Hatters Tea Cup Party and the Port Macquarie Vintage Ports on being awarded $300 for the Golden Oldies Rugby Recruitment Day. The 2016 NSW Seniors Festival grants support events that will help our seniors live active, healthy and social lives. I encourage everyone to get involved and check out events during the Seniors Festival including the two local groups who received funding, as well as the Seniors Concert I have organised in conjunction with Hastings Combined Seniors on Thursday March 31 at Port Panthers featuring local singers and entertainers. Free tickets are available at the club. Now in its 59th year, the NSW Seniors Festival (formerly NSW Seniors Week) is the largest festival for seniors in the Southern Hemisphere, with more than 300,000 people taking part in more than 1,000 free and discounted events across the state. The celebration of seniors has grown from a week-long program to a 10-day festival, prompting the event being renamed NSW Seniors Festival. NSW Seniors Festival will run from 1–10 April 2016. For more information, visit www. nswseniorsweek.com.au Applications open for NAIDOC Week celebrations: Local groups are being encouraged to get involved in celebrating Australia’s Aboriginal culture, by taking advantage of $200,000 in funding grants for NAIDOC Week 2016. NAIDOC is a week-long celebration of the culture, history and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders in Australia. The NSW government is offering grants to support local organisations running NAIDOC Week events this July. I know we have a lot of active local Aboriginal groups and I encourage them to consider applying for a grant. Grants of up to $1,000 are available, with up to $3,000 considered for more significant events. In 2016, NAIDOC Week will run from 3 to 10 July under the theme of ‘Songlines: The living narrative of our nation’. For more information on the NSW government funding grants and to apply, please visit www.aboriginalaffairs.nsw.gov.au. Federal and NSW government entities can not apply.
Kempsey says ‘thanks’ to six amazing women By SUE PATERICK IT was buzzing at Kempsey’s International Women’s Day (IWD) celebrations with about 100 women and some men celebrating the theme ‘diversity’. More like a gathering of old friends, it was a wonderful and empowering event where a large group of diverse, strong, resourceful and interesting women gathered to mingle, chat, catch up and share their amazing stories. IWD committee member, Narelle Moulton, opened the Women of the Macleay awards for 2016 with a rousing speech. “Diversity is what gives our community richness,” she said. “Diversity in ethnicity whether it be Indigenous women or women from another country, diversity in our chosen career paths, gender diversity, diverse families, even diversity in the food we eat.” There is literally too many achievements for each of the six women who received an award to list them all. Carol Riley was nominated for her tireless dedication to caring for animals, especially Macropods – the kangaroo family. She has been a member of FAWNA for 29 years, her home is a drop-off point for sick and injured animals, and she answers calls at any hour of the day or night. Dunghutti Elder, Margaret Ridgeway or Aunty Moog, was acknowledged for mentoring Aboriginal women and girls in all community activities and groups, and for upholding the culture and principles of her ancestors. Her home is open to all and is a safe place for women and children to go in need. Karen Hall received her award for always

putting the community’s needs above her own. She is a big advocate for children’s education, promotes child protection awareness and has made special learning books for families in Early Literacy. Evelyn Jacobs received an award for her 34year career as a teacher at Melville High School and dedicating countless hours to community activities. She has taught three generations of students, been a coach, a tireless advocate and participant in a wide range of sporting activities, and an active fundraiser for many local events. Kay Clarke was nominated because she is a dedicated community-minded person with unwavering support for people with differing abilities and mental health challenges. She assists community members with their tax returns, organises the monthly Macleay
Valley Mental Health Carers and Support Group, and volunteers at St Vincent De Paul. Di Waterhouse received her award for her kindness and understanding when befriending and assisting old people living alone, and her unassuming manner. Di has been a Lifeline counsellor, treasurer of the RSPCA, Mutts and Mogs supporter, FAWNA volunteer, volunteer for Collombatti RFS, and an enthusiastic fund raiser for many worthy causes. Upon receiving their awards each woman shared the same sentiments: honour, happiness, pride and a sense of privilege. Evelyn Jacobs summed it up when she said: “I feel very privileged to be in the company of these fine women.” The winner of the Show Us Your Art competition was Kirri Hawes for her artwork called Whale Eye.

Dana humbled by award By SUE PATERICK WHEN the Macleay Valley’s, Dana Clarke, won the NSW Aboriginal Women of the Year award at Parliament House in Sydney on International Women’s Day, she was taken aback. “I really didn’t think I’d win,” she admits. “It’s an honour and I feel very humble.” For Dana, who has worked in Aboriginal health, domestic violence prevention, child protection, sexual assault and mental health for over 25 years, it is a bittersweet award. “The work I do is out-of-home care and 39 per cent of all children in care are Aboriginal, so it would be better if I didn’t even have a job.” In 2005 Dana was appointed the Chief Executive Officer for the Burrun Dalai Aboriginal Corporation, a Government nonprofit organisation that provides all types of foster care from short-term to crisis, voluntary care, and recruits and trains Aboriginal foster parents. The corporation employs 55 people, 53 are Aboriginal, and provides services in the Macleay Valley, Nambucca Valley to Valla, Armidale, Tamworth and Taree, with 25 to 30 people employed in Kempsey. For Dana the over-representation of Aboriginal children in foster care is concerning. She attributes this to Aboriginal people being stripped of their parenting skills because of the Stolen Generation, and other issues such as loss of identity and culture. But, she stressed, anywhere in NSW there are many wonderful Aboriginal families doing amazing things in their communities. What Dana doesn’t want to see is another Stolen Generation. “I just think we need to look at different ways of doing things,” she explained. “Let’s put families in care instead of taking the children away.” Restoration work with families is also an important part of Burrun Dalai Aboriginal

of a good education, being proud of who you were, that anything was possible, and there was no shame in failure just shame in not trying. He also believed that as an Aboriginal person you should give 100 per cent back to your community. So it was lucky for the Macleay Valley that Dana married a Clarke and moved here in 1983. She thinks it is the most beautiful place on earth because of its beaches, hinterland and amazing people. If she had a magic wand Dana would give all of the corporation’s families back their children, and would ensure that Aboriginal children have all the chances they should to become the next great black leaders. “We are one of the oldest surviving races on earth and proud of who we are,” she said. “So wouldn’t it be great if we could connect with our 60,000 years of learning, and get all Australians to be proud of and recognise the strength and beauty of Aboriginal culture.”
THE Hastings and Camden Haven has been the beneficiary of yet another Green Army team’s work which concludes this week ahead of their graduation. Ten local participants in the Green Army have been undertaking significant environmental work and gaining new skills and training in various projects throughout the region. These projects have complemented existing initiatives by the National Parks Association volunteers and Manning Coastcare Group volunteer worker programs along a 29 km stretch of coastline. Areas where rehabilitation work has been undertaken include to Wauchope, Telegraph Point, Dunbogan, Crowdy Head and Harrington. During the past six months, Green Army participants have made a significant contribution and through their dedication and teamwork, we can see first-hand the tangible results of their activities. Our local participants have not only generated real environment and conservation benefits for our community, but they have gained valuable practical training and experience to help them prepare for the workforce, pursue further training or improve their career opportunities. As the Green Army grows, so too, do the opportunities for young people around Australia to get involved. I encourage all those interested in helping their environment and gaining new skills and training to seek out Green Army opportunities in their region. Further opportunities to join a Green Army project can be found online at www.australia.gov.au/greenarmy

How long have you lived in or around the Hastings? Made the move six years ago, and loved it ever since What do you love most about the Hastings? Ever since I was a child, our family would make trips from Sydney to the Hastings area as we loved adventure. There is always so much to do, no matter what your interests are. Where do you work and what do you love about your work? I work as a dentist at Port Smiles Dental on Lord Street, Port Macquarie. I love being able to change someone’s smile, not just cosmetically, but make it healthy too. Every day gives me a new challenge and I love that no two days are ever the same. What do you like least about your work? I love what I do and sometimes that means I am my own worst enemy. Some days I stay back to complete preparation for complicated cases, without realising it’s evening by the time I am home. How do you start your day? I am an early riser. I enjoy a good breakfast before my morning coffee. On a work day, I like to go through my daily cases with my nurses so we are always prepared. On my days off, I like to look at the tide chart for the best time to go fishing! What do you do in your spare time? In my spare time, I enjoy the beautiful beaches and love to go 4WD when possible. I sneak in some fishing when I can, but every day has so many options for what to do/see in the Hastings. We are really spoilt for choice! What is the achievement you are most proud of? I am proud of how appreciative my patients are with the treatment I provide. I take pride in providing the highest level of care tailored to them and not a generalised approach. It’s something I am really thankful for every day. I am also thankful to my family, whose support has allowed me to achieve what I have so far.

be the priority
THE Port Macquarie-Hastings Council’s Operational Plan is currently in the process of being constructed. What is an Operational Plan? The budget for the year from July to June shows income and expenditure, and projects to be completed in the coming year. Year on year the budget appears to progress based on historical information with little change. Residents have been surveyed over a number of years and the results continue to show that the area of highest priority is roads and footpaths. If areas of concern are to be addressed such as the backlog of roads, footpaths and stormwater issues, a change to the budget process is required to deliver an increase to this area. Although there has been some initial progress made to financial management of gravel roads, but at the current rate, roads will never improve, but continue to decline. If the basic road improvement is not able to be undertaken how will traffic distribution look in a decade, potential chaos? When all backlog and areas of critical need are addressed then council could consider experimental and nice-to-have options. Through the development of the budget, staffing has incurred significant investment over recent years, with a notation by the auditor in the financials statements of the prior year, visible signs of improvement should be seen.

Is there a noticeable difference? If not then the appointment of additional staff may not be of assistance and could show that other internal blockages are occurring which is limiting productivity improvement or staff may be placed inappropriately. The luxury of surplus funds is available at $214m, but accumulating in restricted accounts which requires expenditure to specific areas such as waste rather than roads. Consideration to budget allocation and where income is received (through a variation if necessary not a rate increase) is a possible means to place funds where they are required. Additional funds can be saved by not proceeding with projects, design or construction, where residents are not in favour, such as a levy bank. Through good outcomes waste costs have improved leaving an opportunity to redistribute funds. Further cooperation between departments can lead to significant improvement.
Beach parking signage KEMPSEY Shire Council has begun installing signage in the Crescent Head Foreshore Reserve carparks ahead of the Easter holiday period to address parking issues caused by unauthorised camping in the area. Around 100 people attended a community meeting in January to discuss concerns over limited parking spaces and the lack of respect for the area being shown by ‘free campers’ using the carpark. Council resolved at its February meeting to implement parking restrictions, on the advice of the Local Traffic Committee. The new restrictions, to be enforced from March 21 mean parking spaces in the ‘Point’ carpark will be limited to 4 hours while the ‘Playground’ carpark remains untimed. However, both carparks will be made ‘No Stopping’ zones between 11pm and 5am. “We have listened to what the Crescent Head community have told us, and believe this is the best solution to increase turnover of parking spaces in priority areas and reduce anti-social behaviour associated with ‘free campers’, while minimising the impact on locals,” said Council’s Director Infrastructure Services, Robert Scott. “Previously the regulations signposted in this area were for ‘No Camping’, which meant that vehicles parked in these areas for extended periods couldn’t be fined by our rangers or police without further evidence that the owners were specifically camping rather than parked legally.” “The new regulations will allow enforcement actions to be more effective.”
Title tells Leonardo not back from beach
RICHARD Trench wrote in 1846 that ‘revenant’ was often used by the religious romance writers of the middle ages as a vehicle for their conception of the lower world. This was an early use of ‘revenant’, but by no means the first use. And I’m not sure what he means by ‘lower world’, although I can guess. I was interested in the word ‘revenant’, especially as it was used as a movie title recently. Some of the dictionaries I consulted chose not to use the word, but my 20-volume Oxford dictionary had several examples going back many years. I was discouraged from seeing the movie. Apparently it was too brutal for my delicate eyes. When I grow up, I might sneak out one night to watch it. I did see Spotlight, however, the film that won the Academy Award against Revenant, but that’s another story. The word ‘revenant’ comes from the Latin word ‘reveniens’ and the French ‘revenir’, to return, and it means ‘one who returns from the dead, a ghost’. The word ‘revenant’ means one who returns from something dastardly, not from a day’s shopping. A revenant can’t come back from the beach with a good sun tan; he must come back from the dead, or maybe almost dead - and a few bullet holes would help.
my
LAURIE BARBER
A revenant apparently shares some characteristics with vampires, or even of zombies in modern usage. William of Newburgh wrote in the 1190s about corpses who wandered about seeking revenge against their killers or for some other purpose, but always returning to their allotted tomb. He seemed obsessed with revenants apparently. There was also the story about revenants who called on women at night; couldn’t the wives have fun with that one. “Oh, that wasn’t the man from down the road. That was a revenant….” Revenants were also described as ‘wicked, vain or unbelievers’. Those who saw the movie might remember that the man who returned ‘from the dead’ was not a ghost, but he did experience some moments that were described to my ears as gruesome. It was largely a story about survival and revenge. It was one of those films that was ‘almost
a true story’, as ‘The Lady in The Van’ was described, probably with emphasis on the word ‘almost’. It happened so long ago and details are sketchy. In the film ‘Revenant’, trapper Hugh Glass is attacked in 1823 by a grizzly bear and is left for dead by his so-called friends. The key parts of the story are what happened next. I can’t tell you what happened in the film because I haven’t seen it, but I know that actor Leonardo DiCaprio sheds his pretty-boy image. One report from a few hundred years ago was that a revenant wandered the streets and called out the names of people who would die within three days, so the body of the alleged wanderer was dug up and his head cut off. That fixed that. My big dictionary reports that in some parts of Europe thousands of people still believe the word has relevance. The word seems to be popular in computer games. One question that came to the fore is ‘does anyone know how to kill a revenant’? A person close to me wants to be buried – as distinct from cremated – and she wants to take a mobile phone with her, just in case. The problem of reception is yet to be resolved. lauriebarber.com; lbword@midcoast.com.au.

Celebrate region’s diversity
SOME media reports today would have you thinking our world is predominantly in conflict. People fighting over land, belief systems, sporting team allegiances, you name it. But deep down we know things are safer, calmer and better today than at any time in human history. We just hear more about the troubled areas in the world on the instant 24-hour news cycle. At the Community College we are regularly surprised and delighted by how friendly people are to each other, and how well they go helping each other learning new things. Whether it’s adult literacy and numeracy skills, tech savvy for seniors, or taking on whole new areas of knowledge to seek brand new jobs. We also have a growing volunteer program, from our School of Hard Knocks choir buddy volunteers, to those working with young people, or with the adults in various education programs. It brings joy to us all when we see and hear people sharing the thrill of learning and the fun of joining in community learning. Recognising this important aspect of our lives, on Monday, March 21 the college will host a free morning tea to celebrate Harmony Day. The event will acknowledge the great diversity of people who live in our local region, and also celebrate us sharing learning together, all ages and stages in life. We would like to invite you to join us from 10.30am onwards in our premises at 77 Hastings River Drive. Come and have a cuppa, enjoy meeting diverse people from all over the world, and find out some of the great things on offer at the college when you visit! If you can’t make it please gives us a call anyway to find out more about our programs. Why all the fuss about the reef? Then you’ll see “ some great fishing

and tourism opportunities coming out of the $900,000 investment
“
LOCALS may well wonder ‘why the fuss about the recently installed artificial reef’ and there is no better person to ask than Geoff Shelton, Head Teacher of Maritime at North Coast TAFE and the mid north coast representative on the NSW Recreational Fishing Saltwater Trust Expenditure Committee. “Years ago, when the idea of fishing fees for recreational anglers was first touted, I was against it,” said Mr Shelton. “I thought it would be another revenue raiser for the government to throw into the general coffers, never to be seen again. “However, we were assured that all money raised by the licences would go straight back into fishing sustainability, research and rehabilitation of fishing areas – and it does.” Geoff Shelton has had a long association with the maritime industry and, with his love of fishing and position as President of Port Macquarie Blue Water Fishing Club, has been able to actively contribute and influence how the NSW Recreational Fishing Saltwater (or Freshwater) Trust Expenditure Committees allocates the $14m per year that is raised through recreational fishing fees. Freshwater fishing projects attract about $4m and the rest is allocated to saltwater fishing projects. Anyone can apply for funding from the Recreational Fishing Trusts, including fishing clubs and organisations, universities, councils, community groups, individuals and so on. A wide variety of programs are being funded by the Recreational Fishing Trusts including fishing education, fishing access and facilities, aquatic habitat protection measures and research on fish and fishing. One of the fish habitat measures has been the deployment of offshore artificial reefs (OARs) by the NSW Department of Primary Industries (DPI) off the coast of Sydney, Shoalhaven and
Pictured are the modules used to create the offshore artificial reef positioned off the coast of Port Macquarie now Port Macquarie, with another planned for Port Botany. 30 years in either estuarine or offshore waters. The structures provide shelter and protection for a wide range of fish once marine organisms have attached and grown onto the stable base. The Port Macquarie OAR was constructed
from 20 concrete modules each weighing 23 tonnes and standing more than five metres tall. They were constructed in Newcastle and loaded onto a large barge which was towed more than 250 kilometres to the artificial reef site. Each module was carefully placed on the ocean floor at a depth of approximately 46 metres, 6.3km off the coast. The modules were positioned on the sea floor to maximise the volume of the reef, which is an impressive 1,600 cubic metres. Fish have been shown to rapidly colonise the reefs with 49 species of fish identified on the Sydney OAR reef just 3 years after its deployment. Popular species such as yellowtail kingfish, snapper and mulloway are now regularly found around the structure. Fishers are using the reefs in increasing numbers each year following their deployment. “We’ll see some bait fish about six months from now, then snappers and jewfish, and after about 12 months or so, we’ll start to see pelagic species such as marlin,” explained Mr Shelton. “Then you’ll see some great fishing and tourism opportunities coming out of the $900,000 investment.”

Town Beach amenities block, kiosk and Marine Rescue NSW communications centre is ready for its fitout and assembled to view the completion of the upgrade is (L to R) Adam Grant (Project Manager), Gary Randall (Group Manager for Infrastructure Delivery), Councillors Justin Levido, Rob Turner and Geoff Hawkins.
Beach block almost ready By CHRISTINA PARKIN SET on the southern end of Port Macquarie’s Town Beach, the newly refurbished amenities block, which will serve as the communications centre for Marine Rescue, has shed its scaffolding and is now ready for its fitout. Speaking during a recent guided tour of the facility, Councillor Justin Levido, commended the partnership with the Port Macquarie Marine Rescue, which has resulted in ‘the significant upgrade of a public asset’. The refurbishment of the public toilets will be completed by Easter, while Marine Rescue
NSW will start the fitout of the second story as a communications centre, which has views over the breakwall and the infamous bar at the entrance of the Hastings into the sea. The ground floor will contain a meeting room, internal stairs and back entrance and an area which will be fitted out to the requirements by the kiosk operators, Chris and Leasa Harris, before opening the ‘Salty Crew Kiosk’. Councillor Levido described the $300,000 bare-work project as one which did have some issues with the placement of the antenna which were able to be resolved, and delays due to the weather.
“When complete, the whole Town Beach precinct will look completely different and have a family focus,” said Councillor Levido. “The beautification around the skate park is complete but will be enhanced with the addition of a second kiosk and amenities block. “The second smaller kiosk will not compete with but complement the more functional and modern northern area. “The tender for this kiosk is available at present and it is planned to be completed and operational by next Christmas. “Meanwhile, the toilet and shower amenities at Town Beach will be finished by Easter.”
GREG Smith, principal lawyer at GHS Legal (Wills & Probate Lawyers) with over 30 years’ experience gives the following examples of what may happen if you don’t have your will reviewed every few years by an experienced wills and probate lawyer: Bob lost his wife to cancer and suffered ill health before dying last year. Bob had not had his will reviewed since he signed it in 2002. Bob’s daughter Jane had married Tom in 2004 but their marriage had ended in 2013 and they were now fighting over a property split in the Family Court. Bob died in 2014 leaving Jane half of his estate before Jane’s Family Law property settlement was signed off. Over $150,000 of Jane’s inheritance ended up in Tom’s pocket. Peter signed his Will in 2001 leaving everything to his 3 adult children and allowing his disabled son Mike to live rent free in the family home for life. Peter and Mary married in 2010 but he never got around to having his Will reviewed before he died after a short illness in 2013. After Peter’s funeral, his children were dismayed to hear that the 2010 marriage revoked Peter’s will and that Mary would inherit the family home and the bulk of Peter’s investments and superannuation. Mike had to move out and live with his elder sister and her family while waiting for public housing. Mike contested the will but after more than $100,000 in legal fees, Mary still kept the bulk of Peter’s estate (which she then left to her own children). Peter’s other children got nothing. Eve made a Will leaving her entire estate to her husband Tom and to their children if Tom died before her. Eve died and Tom eventually remarried (to Susan) but after 10 years Susan left him. Half of Eve’s estate ended up in Susan’s pocket. Tom had to sell the family home to pay the Family Law settlement and moved in with his daughter. Finding balance in a demanding world you ready to “feelAreempowered,
IN today’s fast paced world, demanding time restraints and deadlines, if can be difficult to find ‘balance’. We can lose ourselves in endless chores, work demands and commitments. Our ‘soul’ is the essence of our being and it needs to be nurtured just as we need to exercise regularly, eat healthy foods, drink plenty of water and live in a healthy positive environment. Kim Knight, of ‘Transformational Healing’ asks: ‘Are you ready to do some deep journey work to discover the essence of who you are?’ Are you ready to feel empowered, are you looking to maintain a holistic lifestyle? “I find it’s about energy and working positively with intentions and goals, using ritual, processes, connecting with nature and working with beliefs and understandings people can connect with,” said Ms Knight. Kim Knight has returned to her home in Port Macquarie after moving away approximately 16 years ago. She has spent almost a decade working in the remote Kimberley area of Western Australia with Indigenous groups, both male and female, who have a very strong spiritual connection to their land. She has trained with shamans in Bali, the Amazon Jungle of Peru and the Andes Mountains. Kim offers a variety of modalities, working in areas of grief, relationships, stress, anxiety, bullying, domestic violence, life changing events and soul recovery after a traumatic event. Ms Knight explained that she runs workshops in a safe, healing, respectful environment in small group settings. “It is about giving and receiving, respecting and honouring (whether male or female), and about connection.” Kim encourages anyone who wishes to find out more about which of her services can benefit them to ring her on 0401 926 155 or email kim@ transformationalhealing.com.au to make a time
when a twenty minute (or so) initial consultation will be provided free prior to the professional services that Kim provides for $70 per hour. Workshops are planned for April so to find out more about Kim’s services to help you reconnect, heal and find balance in your life. Check out her website www.transformationalhealing.com.au
THOUSANDS of Australian women are living with an undetected silent killer that is putting them at higher risk of stroke compared with men. Despite the fact there are more men than women living with atrial fibrillation (irregular heartbeat), women with the condition are almost twice as likely to have a stroke as men. Stroke Foundation Chief Executive Officer, Sharon McGowan, is urging Australian women to get a comprehensive health check before it’s too late. “Up to 30 percent of Australians are living with undiagnosed atrial fibrillation, putting them
at serious risk of stroke,” Ms McGowan said. “Women with atrial fibrillation are at higher risk of stroke and are more likely to have a severe and potentially deadly stroke as a result. “Atrial fibrillation can be managed but it needs to be detected first. Don’t let your stroke be the first sign of this condition. “Put your health first by asking your doctor for a comprehensive health check – it could save your life. Stroke is one of the biggest killers of Australian women – much more must be done to stop this devastating disease.”

Poetry remains a living art By LIZZIE McLEOD
AT the recent Tamworth Country Music Festival, local poet Tom McIlveen took the Golden Damper trophy home in one hand, and his award winning poem EUGENE in the other. His poem EUGENE, is based on real life events and describes a conversation between a father and his son after returning from Vietnam. The central figure is Tom’s cousin, Private Lloyd Allen of Tamworth, who served with Sixth Battalion’s Alpha Company Infantry Division in Vietnam. Tom explains the emotion and experiences his cousin went through. “EUGENE was inspired by my cousin who came back physically and emotionally damaged,” he says. “It allowed me to convey that message to others of what actually took place there, how they came home, how they were received and welcomed back and the way they felt. “A page of poetry can be a lifetime of emotion. It’s a condensed form of expressing yourself and your emotion in the shortest possible manner. What a poet aspires to do is arouse and touch the emotions of the listener or reader in the same way that music and art does.” Tom has won 36 national written competitions over the past five years and believes that poetry is still very relevant in the modern world and would like to continue to see the passion and knowledge he had in his early education, still instilled in the
“But who will be buying their papers Eugene, when the truth has been finally told, and who will be sending our soldiers to die, when the masters relinquish their hold? Remember my son… that the stones of rebuke have been thrown by the righteous before, and soldiers like you will continue to bleed ̶ for as long as there’s hatred and war.” ABOVE: A verse from Tom McIlveen’s award-winning poem EUGENE
Tom McIlveen schools today. “I think we are less aware that every song and every bit of music that we all listen to 24/7 is based on poetry, rhythm and rhyme,” he says. “Is poetry as mainstream as ever? Possibly not as mainstream these days. However, I think beneath the surface it’s still there. Look at the rap music in America, it’s basically poetry put to

inspiration and to meet up with local groups and organisations. “Express yourself on paper and perhaps meet up with local groups,” he says. “We have a local poetry group here in Port Macquarie and we have a national body, called the Australian Bush Poets Association (ABPA). We encourage people to come along and read out what they’ve written and I’m happy to critique and mentor anybody who wants to write. Within that we have a forum where you can post and share, and be evaluated. Anybody who is wanting to write should seek us out. “I met up with some mentors when I started writing and that helped me immeasurably. We are always happy to encourage and support anybody else. I guess we are a fraternity.” Tom’s award-winning poems can be found on www.abpa.org.au Tom is currently president of ABPA as well as a local group called ‘Port Macquarie Minstrels and Poets’ who meet every second and fourth Sunday of the month at the Senior Citizen’s Hall in Munster Street at 1pm.

Perhaps other poets and writers today are not being inspired and are not aware.” Tom’s inspiration for his work stems from other great poets, especially Australian poets. “Some of the traditional Australian poets, I don’t know what was in the water back then, but we had some of the world’s greatest here in Australia - Paterson, Lawson and CJ Dennis,. “It was just absolute genius between those three. Even today we know about their works and sometimes today I just sit and am just absolutely gobsmacked at the genius of those writers. “That was the grounding and forming of our culture. They expressed it in words and they verbalised it. Today we record what’s going on in our world and what’s happening to us.” Tom encourages other writers to seek

IF you enjoy music and would love to help a good cause, then come along to the Port Macquarie Hasting Concert Band’s concert on Sunday, March 20, from 2pm at the Port Macquarie Uniting Church, Sherwood Road. All proceeds will go to assist the work of Red Cross Australia in the Port Macquarie and Hastings region. One of the vital Red Cross services in the Port Macquarie region is to assist elderly people living on their own in their own home. The service, called Telecross, provides for the safety of these elderly people. They can be self-referred, or be referred by a relative or by others. The person receives a daily phone call from a local Red Cross volunteer, to check and confirm their safety. Another service the Red Cross provides for the community is the ‘Red Cent’ op-shop in Horton Street as well as the extensive services that the Red Cross Transfusion Services provides
to all recipients in need of transfusions of a variety of blood products. Tim Stanmore, Musical Director, inspires the Hastings Concert Band to light up the music of Hollywood milestones such as the ‘Zoot Street Riot’, ‘Grease’, Elton John and ‘Procession of the Sardar’. The concert will highlight the virtuosity of its flute and clarinet soloists with their stirring performances, and the ‘Sublime Chimes Ensemble’ will set the stage with a delightful display of hand bell rhythms. Port Macquarie’s Sing Australia Choir led by Ann French, will enrich this concert with their special performance. Admission at the door is $5 per head. In the interval, refreshments will be served for a gold coin donation.

Say ‘G’day’ to Doug THE Port Macquarie Chamber of Commerce is delighted to invite the community to come to breakfast with guest speaker Doug Walters, pictured, an Australian Cricket great, this Friday, March 18. “With thanks to the Hastings River District Cricket Association, we are very excited to welcome Doug to the region where we will all enjoy his humour and experience,” said Lisa McPherson, Executive Officer of the Port Chamber. “We love providing opportunities for local
business and the wider community to come together and what better way to start your morning than with an Australian sports legend like Doug Walters. “With his wealth of knowledge and experience of Australian cricket we are sure to have a kick start to the day and a few laughs thrown in as well.” This event is proudly sponsored by Insurance House 360. To register please go to: www.portchamber. com.au or call Katherine on 65 83 4412.
Join this ‘spoketacular’ ride IN 2016, Australia’s most ‘spoketacular’ charity cycling event, The Variety Cycle is urging participants to challenge themselves for Aussie kids in need. Now in its third year, the new route for 2016 will see cyclists take in the beautiful East Coast of Australia, cycling from Sydney to the Great Barrier Reef, with participants able to take on the full 15 day ride, or choose their challenge with a range of one, two-day and seven-day routes. This life-changing journey will see a philanthropic peloton clip themselves in and travel through some of Australia’s most scenic regions from April 2-16. The Variety Cycle 2016 boasts a range of shorter cycles, making it the ideal adventure for everyone from novices through to elite athletes. The range of options include the full 15-day Sydney to the Great Barrier Reef cycle (2002 kms), challenging seven-day cycles from Sydney to Byron Bay route (1023 kms) or Brisbane to Great Barrier Reef (979 kms) as well as three choices of two-day cycles (Sydney to Maitland (223kms), Brisbane to Noosa (229kms) or Bundaberg to the Great Barrier Reef (358kms) and the one-day ride from Sydney to The Entrance (104kms). “The Variety Cycle is more than just a bike ride; it gives participants an exclusive insight into Variety’s vital work and how
their fundraising supports Aussie kids in need,” Variety - the Children’s Charity NSW CEO Tam Johnston said. “Overwhelmingly one of the highlights of Variety Cycle each year is cyclists being able to meet families on route, visiting schools and local communities to donate much needed resources and equipment along the way and in 2016 we aim to make this even more special than ever before.” The Variety Cycle is run by experienced staff and includes: front and back support vehicles, bike mechanics, food, accommodation, medical teams and more, so all participants need to do is come along for the ride of a lifetime. The event was founded in 2013 by long-term Variety supporter, Christopher Mapp. In 2016 he will again be strapping on his helmet, taking on the full 15-day challenge. “Having the opportunity to ride through some of the most beautiful parts of Australia with a great bunch of people is an amazing experience,” he said. “Every day there is a chance to have some fun, whether it is an afternoon of surfing or having a few laughs over a long lunch with the team - the friendships and camaraderie you make along the way last a lifetime.”

Your Local Independent - The Hastings and The Macleay
Thursday 17 March, 2016
footytips
Comps aren’t won in March OK, pick yourself up, dust yourself off and get ready to have another crack. Tipping was never meant to be easy. If you followed Your Local Independent’s tips for last round (Round 2 NRL) then you would be feeling a little bruised and beaten with a score of just three. But don’t stress. Grand finals (and tipping comps) are not won in March. Well done if you achieved a pass mark last weekend. Some very close games – the Dogs’ final seconds try and then successful kick to down the Panthers – was a real nail-biter. And then the Raiders came back to edge out the Roosters by a point. Even if you didn’t tip either of those winners you have to marvel at what a great comp 2016 is turning out to be. The Raiders, Eels, Sharks and Tigers have certainly given tipsters something to think about each week. There no doubt will be even more surprises this weekend as teams continue to find their feet. Another early start, with Round Three kicking off tonight (Thursday). Here is how Your Local Independent sees the round unfolding: • Cowboys v Roosters (Thurs March 17, 7.05pm, 1300 Smiles Stadium, Townsville): The Cowboys are back home and should be able to account for the Roosters. The reigning premiers will be tougher mentally after falling to the Eels last weekend. Meanwhile the Roosters are looking at a 0-3 start to the season. There is no doubt they will start winning at some stage with the quality of their roster. The question is when. • Your Local Independent tips: Cowboys. Bulldogs v Eels (Fri March 18, 7.05pm, ANZ Stadium, Sydney): What a cracker this
one will be. Bulldogs escaped last weekend to make it two from two and the Eels confirmed they will be contenders by downing the Cows. This is a toss of the coin. But hard to go against the Dogs current form. Expect them to grind out another win. • Your Local Independent tips: Bulldogs Knights v Raiders (Sat March 19, 4pm, Hunter Stadium, Newcastle): Another toss of the coin. The Knights have been ordinary the first two rounds, but will be lifted at home. The Raiders are playing great football despite being without playmakers Austin and Sezer. Raiders deserve to be favourites, but the Knights are due. Your Local Independent tips: Knights Panthers v Broncos (Sat March 19, 6.30pm, Pepper Stadium, Penrith): Very hard to tip against the Broncos, despite the Panthers being at home. Penrith will also be extra hungry after that close loss to the Dogs last weekend. Injury-wise the
ROUND 3 17th – 21st March Thursday 17th March, 8.05pm, 1300 Smiles Stadium Cowboys vs Roosters Friday 18th Marhc, 8.05pm, ANZ Stadium Bulldogs vs Eels Saturday 19th March, 5pm, Hunter Stadium Knights vs Raiders Saturday 19th March, 7.30pm, Pepper Stadium Panthers vs Broncos Saturday 19th March, 9.30pm, Cbus Super Stadium Titans vs Wests Tigers Sunday 20th March, 2pm, Mt Smart Stadium Warriors vs Storm Sunday 20th March, 4pm, Sydney Cricket Grounds Dragons vs Rabbitohs Monday 21st March, 7pm, Brookvale Oval Sea Eagles vs Sharks

• Your Local Independent tips: Warriors. Dragons v Rabbitohs (Sun March 20 3pm, SCG, Sydney): The Dragons have been disappointing in their two outings for 2016, while the Rabbits just keep getting better. Key injuries on both sides, but Souths just seem to play through the pain. These two teams are traditional rivals and emotion will play a role, but tip against the Rabbits at your own peril. • Your Local Independent tips: Rabbitohs Sea Eagles v Sharks (Mon March 21, 6pm, Brookvale Oval, Sydney): Another couple of keen rivals. The form line says that the Sharks should win this in a canter, but Manly are a different side at Brookvale and have a roster that belies their opening two losses. In fact, the early betting has the Sea Eagles as slight favourites. • Your Local Independent tips: Sea Eagles
Broncs will be without big winger Corey Oates, but they have plenty in reserve. • Your Local Independent tips: Broncos. Titans v Tigers (Sat March 19, 8.30pm, Cbus Stadium, Gold Coast): Tigers are two from two and the betting says they should also clinch this one. The Titans fell back into their old ways last weekend against the Storm and did not treasure possession. However Titans are home and Tigers are due for a reality check. • Your Local Independent tips: Titans Warriors v Storm (Sun March 20 1pm, Mt Smart Stadium, Auckland): Another close call. But you would have to think the Warriors are about to live up to their pre-season promise, especially at home. The Storm will always be tough, but have had the luxury of playing their first two rounds at home. Things won’t be quite so comfortable across The Ditch. So, let’s go for the Kiwis!

Club catches clear skies SUNDAY March 6 dawned with the best weather conditions seen for months for the Blue Water Fishing Club’s fourteenth outing of the year. A slight south-westerly blew early which slowly eased to produce a glassed-off sea. However the strong southerly current made fishing difficult in any water greater than 40 metres deep. Six boats ventured seaward with twelve fishers on board fishing off Big Hill to the north, Lake Cathie to the south and the yellow buoy holding the Fish Aggregating Device (FAD) to the east. The Club’s barbecue and weigh-in commenced at 12 noon and was very well supported by members, families and friends. Fish that greeted the weigh-master included snapper, pig fish, cobia and the great eating ocean flathead. The best boat on the day was ‘Odess’ skippered by new member Mark Swan and runner-up was
‘Jossie’, skippered by Bill Vogel. The Mid-Coast Marine award for the heaviest catch was won by Kyle Williamson with 8.26 points. The Emerald Downs Golf Course award for the best morwong was not contested, the Port Macquarie Private Hospital most species award was won by Jim Fischer with two different species and the Protect Pest Control prize for the best of other species was won by Mark Swan with his great cobia. The Evan Baxter secret weight trophy was won by Bill Vogel. The next outing will be held on Sunday March 20. The weigh-in and barbecue will commence at 12.00pm at the marina. Anyone wishing to join the Club or attend the weigh-ins and barbecue are most welcome. For further information please contact President Geoff Shelton on 0421 324 773.

TURIA Pitt will make her Ironman triathlon debut at Ironman Australia on May 1 in Port Macquarie. The inspiring Australian will test herself over the 3.8km swim, 180km ride and 42.2km run, that makes up an Ironman triathlon. In 2001, Pitt was competing in an Ultra Marathon in Western Australia when she was caught in a fast moving bushfire. The fire almost claimed her life, leaving her with burns to 65 per cent of her body. Part of what drove her through the enormous challenge of her rehabilitation was her desire to one day become an ironman. “When I was in the hospital I was told that I’d never run again. It was like a light was switched on in my head. I thought ‘I’ll show you, I’m going to do an Ironman one day’,” she said.
“It was the best motivation. My mum and my partner, Michael, would come into my hospital room each morning and say ‘come on, get up, it’s time to get training for your Ironman’ and I’d get up and get stuck in.” Pitt will also use the event to raise money and awareness for the charity Interplast. Interplast provides free reconstructive surgery to people in developing countries across the Asia-Pacific. The money they raise enables volunteer surgeons to treat people with burns, cleft lip and palate and other disabilities who would otherwise be unable to access affordable, quality health care. “My plastic surgeon volunteers for Interplast on an annual basis, which is how I found about their work. I’ve been working with Interplast since 2013.”
