Historic struggle You can now read about Rotary’s 70 years of Port service

By BARBARA DYER THERE have been times over the past four months when local church pastor, author and Rotarian Kerry Medway wondered whether he had bitten off more than he could chew as he set about uncovering every nugget of information he could find about Rotary’s 70-year history in Port Macquarie. “You might have thought it would be easy enough, with 400 past and present members to share stories and photos,” says Kerry, Port Macquarie Rotary Club’s Vocational Director. “But there were times I wondered what I’d done,” he laughs, relaxing now that the book, Seventy Years of Service Above Self, is complete and ready for release this month. • Continued Page 7

What paradise feels like Lord Howe Island has a unique relationship with this region. It sits 550km directly east and is part of the State electoral seat of Port Macquarie. For many years Port was considered ‘the gateway’ to Lord Howe. Your Local Independent journalist SUE PATERICK explores this beautiful destination. ABOUT 550 kilometres east of Port Macquarie, the tiny emerald island of Lord Howe is a World Heritage listed paradise of pristine beaches, rugged landscapes and a sheltered lagoon with water so clear it is almost invisible. Lord Howe boasts the most southerly coral reef in the world, which abounds with sea turtles and a myriad of fish. Beyond its turquoise lagoon the often cloudcovered twin peaks of Mt Lidgbird (777m) and Mt Gower (875m) guard this subtropical Eden and can be seen from about 100 kilometres out to sea. The largest of 27 islands and outcrops, Lord Howe is part of the eroded remnants of a large volcano and its fertile soils are home to over 70 plant species. Apart from surfing, snorkelling, fishing, diving and close encounters with wildlife, the island’s main attraction is bush walking through its dense rainforests. Life on Lord Howe is relaxed and follows the sea’s ebb and flow. To keep this laid-back atmosphere visitor numbers are restricted to about 400 at any one time and there is only 350 permanent residents. The island is so beautiful it seems locals like, Lisa Makiiti, never want to leave and neither did their descendants. Lisa is a sixth-generation Lord Howe Islander. She was born on Lord Howe, as was her father, grandmother and great-grandmother. “My ancestors arrived on Lord Howe in 1842 and were the first permanent settlers,” Lisa said. She was educated by correspondence and completed her school certificate before moving to Sydney to finish high school. Once in the big city, Lisa worked in graphic art and printing until the siren song of the sea lured her back to her island home permanently in 1989. One of her five favourite things about island life is being surrounded by the ocean. “Swimming here is the most uplifting experience,” Lisa said. “Our water is extraordinary!”

Left: Life is a beach for lucky Lord Howe Islanders, Rod and Lisa Makiiti, who get to live in paradise every day.

The fact there are no crowds, ever, and being able to go bushwalking among breathtaking scenery without another soul in sight is also rather magical. Then there is the island sounds that soothe Lisa’s soul like surf breaking out on the reef, palm fronds rustling in a gentle sea breeze and sweet serenades from the islands endemic birds. A sense of community and sharing special moments with fellow islanders is another gift of island life. Lisa also loves Lord Howe’s different seasons and each holds a promise of something extraordinary. “Autumn is pretty gorgeous here because the light is soft and beautiful,” she said. “There is also a sensational shadowing on the mountain contours and the Providence Petrels are home to breed over winter.” In late winter White Terns also start arriving, and the Shearwaters and Sooty Terns are settling in to breed. “It’s amazing how these birds traverse the world’s oceans to return here each year,” Lisa said, still astonished. Spring brings all the promise of summer.

While her ancestors worked hard just to survive, Lisa admits there are not many hardships about island life these days. “I work hard so I can travel, shop online, and enjoy all the advantages of living in paradise,” she added. “The biggest hardship is bidding your children farewell as they fly away to boarding school.” With her Husband, Rod, Lisa has built two holiday destinations on her beloved island. Both are small, private and proving very popular. “Bowker Beach House is our luxury property, while Lagoon Landing caters more for midmarket travellers,” Lisa explained. “Bowker has been open nearly five years and Lagoon Landing for two years.” Prior to that, Rod was a carpenter and Lisa owned surf shop Larrups (now Abemama) for 25 years. Both Rod and Lisa are enjoying working in hospitality and know how lucky they are to be able to sell their beautiful island to the world. “Lord Howe was always going to be my forever home and the older I get the more tuned in I am to its simple majesty, easy solitude and

Getting there is a short two-hour flight with Qantaslink and flights operate daily from Sydney and from Brisbane on weekends. LETTER WEEK OF THE

All letters sent in must include your address and phone number and be under 350 words.

A guide to working dogs GUIDE Dogs NSW/ACT recently launched our new In Your Hands campaign, aiming to make the community aware that the safety of Guide Dogs is in the hands of pet owners. Working Guide Dogs experience high levels of every day distractions from pet dogs, including attacks – overwhelmingly from off-lead dogs. These distractions can cause Guide Dog handlers, who are blind or vision impaired to experience anxiety, a loss of confidence, and have their safety and independence compromised. We’re encouraging pet owners to keep their dogs on-lead when out in public and follow simple Guide Dog etiquette, to reduce these distractions. You can help by following these simple steps: • Keep your pet dog on a leash and under control when out and about; • If you see a loose dog, please alert your local council; • If you see a working Guide Dog in harness, please give it and its handler space; • Don’t pat, feed or otherwise distract a working Guide Dog. A well-intentioned pat can undo months of training. • When approaching a Guide Dog team with your dog, please clearly introduce yourself to the person and say you have a dog with you.

By keeping control of your own dog, you can help create a safe community, not just for Guide Dogs and their handlers, but for everyone. Dale Cleaver CEO of Guide Dogs NSW/ACT

Coal-fired ‘ignorance’

MR Wilkie’s recent letter in support of coalfired power generation of electricity completely ignores the critical issue of carbon emissions. Not only that, but he actually promotes the burning of coal. That’s like promoting the use of hydrofluorocarbons (HCF) in the 80s when the science warned that HCFs had to be banned. It’s no surprise that Wilkie would promote coal - he is a self-declared climate change denier who claims a greater authority than 97% of the world’s climate scientists. Climate change is real, is happening now and must be urgently addressed to avoid increasingly severe and destructive natural events. Most countries, including Australia, accept the science and have signed up to the Paris target of keeping the global temperature increase well below two degrees centigrade. Mick Lyons Port Macquarie

WOW! What a busy weekend it was! I decided to treat myself for Mother’s Day and took Friday off to have a long weekend. The single best decision I’ve made in a while. It was great to clock out and do something completely different. Different is an understatement. I went camping for the first time in about 12 years and attended the Rattletrap at Crowdy Head. What a blast! Congratulations to the Drag-Ens Hot Rod Club for organising and co-ordinating such a fantastic event! From start to finish, the attention to detail was obvious and really well executed. Sunday, you would not know there had been 3000+ spectators and 80 vehicles dragging up and down the beach all day Saturday. There was not a trace, right down to no litter! Very impressive! We had a crew of 12(ish) camping for the weekend so my trusty sidekick and I travelled in a ‘Steptoe and Son’ style convoy early Friday to Crowdy Head and set up camp. After much packing and unpacking, a fairly fluid stream of swearing and cursing, intermingled with lots of laughs, while trying to work out how pop-up tents and gazebos actually pop-up like they do in the ads, we created a pretty impressive campsite. Having two people that are both a bit ‘over the top’, creating a campsite meant our fellow campers enjoyed a variety of luxury inclusions on their two-night stay. We had two marquees set up as a kitchen, dining and bar area, with fridge, coffee machine, pantry and BBQ. We had flashing lights. We had sound, enough alcohol to run a cocktail bar and more, so much more! What can I say - it was over the top and it set the tone for a fun weekend. I can safely say that 90% of our crew attended the Rattletrap with an ‘overhang’ from hell. I saw more than one ‘hair of the

dog’ being forced down over the course of the day. Let’s just say, Saturday night there was a lot of “I’m pacing myself” - wink, wink! That’s code for: I’m still seedy. The Rattletrap itself? If you are into anything vintage, classic and unique, keep an eye out for next years Rattletrap. With over 80 different classic hot rods, and vintage racing cars and motorbikes entered in the event, not to mention the 200+ hot rods and classic cars in the carpark this is definitely worth a day out. There’s much more to it than just the cars – there’s a fantastic family orientated culture in the hot rod scene, generations of families. One campsite had four generations, three of them racing. It was great to see. Some people are fully into the costume from the era of their cars. I totally get that. Some are not. I get that too. It was just great to see all kinds of people from all walks of life connecting over their passion. The Discovery Park at Crowdy Head is a fantastic place to stay. The staff were fantastic, very welcoming. The facilities and amenities were the best I’ve seen in a camping ground. There was always a staff member cleaning the toilet and shower blocks or emptying bins. It was amazing considering the amount of people they were hosting. Well done! All in all, it was a great trip and I got my long weekend away with a difference. I’m definitely up for next year!

IT has taken two weeks for a letter to travel between Laurieton and Newcastle. I could have walked there in that time and hand delivered the letter. A past Prime Minister of Australia once said: ‘Australia is fast becoming a Banana Republic’. His words are coming true.

Thumbs Down TO the two police officers who were at the intersection on Park Road and Hastings River Drive directing traffic. No white gloves used for traffic control. They were issued for that purpose … the same purpose they were issued to me many years ago.

I’D like to give a big thumbs up ìf possible please, to PMHC for responding to the public need for a drinking water fountain near Laurieton School of the Arts. Many thanks to all concerned particularly Mayor Peta Pinson, for personally following through the request to a successful installation.

Levi living rodeo dream A YOUNG local cowboy is living his dream. Ten-year-old Levi Ward, from Kundabung (near Kempsey), pictured, has been competing in rodeos almost every weekend since he can remember, and now his dream of competing in America has finally come true. “I was very excited and happy when I found out I was going to America,” said Levi. “I’ve got plenty of friends at school and I’ve told them all that I’m going to America and they say they wish they were going.” Levi and his mother, Natasha Ward, will be jetting off on July 22 for the Youth Bull Riders World Finals in Abilene, Texas. Levi will be competing in the under 11s rodeo. “It’s just me and mum going because dad’s too scared to get on a plane and he needs to look after my sisters,” Levi said. “Mum and dad were pretty proud of me and the whole town has been very supportive.” Levi’s father, Dean Ward, his mother and his two sisters Bobbi, and Franki, spend their weekends travelling to rodeos to support Levi’s ambition of being a professional steer rider. “Levi will be competing in the world finals in America. The best kids in the world will be there and there are only six kids going from Australia,” said Mr Ward. “There are five rounds held over a week and Levi will also ride in a couple of other rodeos while he is over there. He trains everyday and we spend our weekends travelling to rodeos for him and his sisters to compete.” Levi’s most recent win was the Forbes Paddy Molloy all-round cowboy buckle. “It was an all-round rodeo in honour of a 96-year-old who started riding in the Forbes competition when he was just 14, so they put a buckle up in his honour at Forbes,” Mr Ward explained. “Levi had to compete in more than one event, so he did the steer ride, the barrel

race, rope, and out of all the entries, out of all the adults and the kids, Levi was the only one who placed in two events. He came 2nd in the steer ride and 3rd in the barrel race, so he won the buckle.” Mr Ward says that Levi and his family are always appreciative of how supportive their town has been. “Levi qualified for the competition in America but it’s very costly to send him over,” said Mr Ward. “The town and our sponsors have supported him in so many different ways. We are always chasing more sponsors though as this is a costly sport and we would love to see Levi go as far as he can in it.” The Ward family is having an auction on Saturday May 19 at the Kempsey Stock and Land Cattle Sale to fundraise for Levi’s travels. There will be over 60 items for sale from local businesses from Port Macquarie and Kempsey. For more information about the auction, speak to Sammi from Kempsey Stock and Land on 6562 6600. Levi’s current sponsors are: Tumblegum Bakehouse, Mavin Truck Centre, RedPoint, NRMA Kempsey, Kempsey Stock and Land, Fishers Asphalt and Gulf Western Oils. Set for annual ‘Relay’

HASTINGS Relay For Life is almost here and the momentum is building in the lead up to the big event being held on Saturday, May 19-20, at Oxley Oval in Port Macquarie. This fun and moving overnight experience is more than just about raising vital funds for Cancer Council’s research, prevention initiatives and support services. It’s a chance for the Hastings community to recognise and celebrate local cancer survivors, patients and their carers. The ambassador for this year’s event and a cancer survivor himself, Mike Reid, says it’s a great opportunity to bring together like-minded people and supporters. “The awareness it raises in the community is enormous and the funds raised are a great help to those living with cancer”, he said. Percival Property, a major sponsor of Relay is honoured to be involved once again. “Percival Property is honoured to be able to give back to our community by sponsoring a range of community events like Relay For Life. This is a cause that is close to our hearts and we congratulate all of those people who have already registered to take part in the Relay,” said Michelle Percival. The Percival Property Survivor Challenge is a rope challenge which will have teams battling it out for some great prizes. Port City Bowling Club who is also a major sponsor is creating an interactive video booth at the event. “It will allow participants to share their stories, send messages of hope to loved ones or simply talk about their Relay experiences,” said Allysha Webber, Marketing and Promotions Manager at Port City Bowling Club. You can’t afford to miss the hilarious Miss Relay competition and at midnight join the 5km Glow Run. As well as a suite of bands and entertainers on stage, the activities on the track will take place throughout the 24 hours. There will be three legged races and potato sack races; Newspaper Fashion Parade and a Scavenger Hunt, and a plethora of kid’s activities. Of course, there will be delicious food and coffee available. The very beautiful and moving Candlelight Ceremony held at 5.30pm, gives participants a chance to remember those who have passed away from cancer and gives hope to those who are going through their own cancer diagnosis. Contact Katie Mead on (02) 6659 8403 for more info.

Vital funds for sporting groups FUNDING Local Sport: Seven local sporting groups will receive almost $50,000 for improved infrastructure, equipment and programs to further enhance sport activities across a range of sports. Sport is the lifeblood of the Port Macquarie electorate and investment in local sport continues to be important focus for the community. Funded projects include: • $5,000 Port Macquarie Australian Rules Football Club; • $5,000 Port Macquarie Golf Club; • $15,000 Port Macquarie Swimming Club; • $1,140 Port Macquarie Longboard Club; • $18,540 Moorland Soccer Club; • $2,246 Port Macquarie Tennis Club; • $2,400 Port Macquarie Rowing Club. The projects were funded as part of the NSW Government’s Local Sport Grant Program. The program provides grants of up to $20,000 towards projects to assist regions with rallying the community together and ensuring ongoing involvement in sport. The NSW government is committed to supporting grassroots sport and improving participation rates across the state. We know that sport has many proven health, social and economic outcomes and I encourage eligible clubs to apply for the next round of funding. Projects that are eligible include upgrades to

local amenities or improving access to facilities, training programs and community events. Give Cyclists A Safe Space: After a successful two year trial, the Minimum Passing Distance Rule will be made permanent to improve the safety of both cyclists and drivers. The Minimum Passing Distance Rule requires drivers to leave a safe space when passing cyclists. Under the rule drivers who pass cyclists must leave a distance of: • At least one metre when the speed limit of 60km/h and below; • At least 1.5 metres where the speed limit is above 60km/h; • Motorists who don’t comply will receive a $330 fine and loss of two demerit points. An independent evaluation of the trial estimated a 15 per cent reduction in bicycle to vehicle casualty crashes.

Free Friday at Museum THE Port Macquarie Museum will celebrate International Museum Day with free entry and the launch of its new free audio guide on Friday 18 May from 9.30am to 4.30pm. “This year’s International Museum Day theme is ‘Hyperconnected Museums – New approaches, new publics’, so it is fitting that we are launching our new audio museum guide on this day,” says Port Macquarie Museum’s President, Clive Smith. “Our audio guide has been developed using a free web based app called IziTRAVEL and can be accessed either through the web or through the app itself. “The audio guide provides an opportunity for visitors to take a voice assisted tour of the museum onsite using their smart phone or tablet, or at any time on the web. We also provide free WiFi and earbuds to make it even easier for our visitors to enjoy their visit. “Thanks to technology, museums like ours are able to reach and connect with audiences worldwide and to find new publics to share our collections and stories with. Over recent years this has included digitising our collections and making them accessible and discoverable online and encouraging our visitors to review and share their experiences on social media. Our new audio guide enables us to connect even more with our community, our visitors and the wider cultural landscape.”

Not all candidates ‘lily-white’ JUST imagine a contender for council elections wearing white, so you will know he is a candidate. Well, I presume some candidates do dress in white – whether they do it to make you think they are candidates or their clothes are in the wash I’ll leave for another day. But some candidates did dress in white, so people would know they were candidates. Let me tell you a story. Don’t bother to tell me if you have heard it before. In the old days, somewhere around 1600s, people in Rome did wear white to signify that they were candidates for some high office. People returning from war also wore their togas loosely so people would see their war wounds. Such a person would have to be frank and honest. Whether that high office represented holy orders or the local council, or even a service club is immaterial. The word candidate meant wearing white. A few other words come under this category, and I’ll mention them later if I have room. The colour white was meant to signify a candidate’s purity. Linda and Roger Flavell in their book Dictionary of Word Origins said a candidate would appear in public dressed in a white toga “a symbolic statement his character was

my

LAURIE BARBER

spotless and that he was therefore upright and trustworthy”. Samuel Johnson described someone as a candidate for “literary fame”. You can even apply to be a candidate in a dating game, but we won’t go there. The term candidate entered the English language in the first half of the 17th century. I know, I know. You don’t need to tell me about the candidates you know who have skeletons in the closet. The editor wouldn’t publish it anyway. But in the old days a candidate would wear clothes rubbed with chalk, meant to signify that person‘s spotless character. That name carried on through the years. My Macquarie says candidate means one who is selected by others as a contestant for an office. Heinemann says a candidate is a person who seeks or is nominated for an office. It goes on to say it is an honour. Collins says a candidate is a person applying for a job.

Adrian Room in his Fascinating Origins of Everyday Words says Romans seeking high office wore white togas and so were called candidate, from Latin candidus, white. Word Histories and Mysteries said English needed a term for someone whose ascent to office was a matter of choice and so one was borrowed from Rome. My big dictionary says a candidate is “one who seeks or aspires to be elected or appointed to an office, privilege or position of honour or who is put forward or selected by others as an aspirant”. That Latin word candidus has given us a few other words. Here are some of them: Candidly means with open mind. Candidness means purity, or innocence. Candid means something like “if you’ll allow me to be candid, I think you’re a crook”. Candescence means dazzling whiteness or brightness. Candent means to be glowing with heat. Candify means to become white. Incandescent means glowing white with heat. Candle means to make white. Some even say candy comes from candidus, although I have my doubts. Ambrose Bierce in his 1911 Devil’s Dictionary says a candidate is one who “reluctantly consents to sacrifice his private interests to the public good”. I put that in for what it’s worth. lauriebarber.com; lbword@midcoast.com.au

FROM THE MAYOR A weekly conversation with Mayor Peta Pinson Last week I had the pleasure of being visited by six enthusiastic young students from Heritage Christian School and Westport Primary School. What a wonderful morning it was, as the students shared with me what they would do if they were ‘Mayor for a day’. The visit was hosted by The Rotary Club of Port Macquarie West, who put the challenge out to the students that if they had the opportunity to step into my shoes for a day, what would they do? After a tour of the Port Macquarie Council Chambers, we got down to business as the students shared their ‘Mayor for a day’ speeches with me, and can I assure you, the future of our community is definitely in good hands. There were many great ideas put forward including

ensuring our kids start each day with a nourishing breakfast, eat lots of fruit and vegetables and stay healthy and active. The need to continue to recycle was extremely important, including ensuring we all create less junk and more reusable containers. Looking after those who are less fortunate was also a common theme, making sure everyone has a place to live and feel safe, have fresh food available, and families are supported in times of need. Building playgrounds for kids with disabilities was important, so that everyone in our community could have the opportunity to enjoy parks and playgrounds and get around easily. And the ideas I couldn’t go past was making sure there is a constant supply of cinnamon donuts, and even the need for Port Macquarie to have its very own

pmhc.nsw.gov.au Disneyland and Universal Studios! Whilst it was certainly enlightening to hear these and many more great ideas from my young visitors, it made me think how important it is that our children get involved in community life from a young age. They have so many ideas and opportunities to grow as citizens ahead of them. By contributing to and involving themselves in local clubs, community groups and volunteering will introduce our kids to new learning experiences, and set them up for life. Thank you Bianca, Flynn, Amarni, Erin, Rae Venice and Jordan, you inspired me to continue to do the best job I can on behalf of our community. Who knows, one of you may be the Mayor one day in the future! Until next week, Peta.

Port Rotary celebrates 70th I did have “wonderful help from various sources and no shortage of enthusiasm. But I have also hit a lot of brick walls

Author Kerry Medway

• From Page 1 “I did have wonderful help from various sources and no shortage of enthusiasm,” he says. “But I have also hit a lot of brick walls.” Despite many descendants of the founding members being around to offer what they could, finding information and photos from the first 20 years of Rotary in Port Macquarie had Kerry scratching around, searching archives, old newspapers, the library and begging everyone to dig deep into their memory banks of any snippet of stories their grandads and dads might have told them. While his hours of effort ‘got some good stuff’, sadly much of the early history back to 1948 had been lost; thrown out after Rotary grandads died. Sad, but often the story. “I was researching 395 names, many people I had never heard of; some whose names had been given incorrectly,” he said. He even ran appeals in the metropolitan newspapers hoping to winkle out more stories. Without success. “I was able to track down the daughter of

Charles Huxley who was very involved in Rotary in Port Macquarie, as a member from 1957 to 1989,” Kerry says. “Facebook came to the rescue, leading me to his daughter Helen Patterson who was able to tell me about her dad, a local tomato farmer. “Athol Platt was another mystery man, despite his having a race, the Athol Platt Handicap, named after him. Athol had led a team of volunteers to clear the land where the Port Macquarie race club is today. “Something that has really helped me was Laurie Barber’s book ‘The First Forty Years’. Laurie is the longest serving member of our club and he wrote the book many years ago. “On the club’s 50th anniversary Port

Macquarie school principal Gordon Milne added another 10 years.” In fact, Mr Milne offered a light moment in Kerry’s research. “In the early 1980s the Rotarians were asked to paint the historic cemetery plots, which included painting around the wrought iron work around the graves,” Kerry said. “Unfortunately, after painting the inside of the wrought iron, Gordon realised he then could not clamber back out so had to sit there and wait for the paint to dry.” Not all the names though, were helpful. “I searched for information about Charter President Allan Ryan, not realising his name was actually Charles Allan Ryan.

“But I got there eventually.” And now it is May. The 70th anniversary celebrations have begun, and the book will be launched on May 23 at Panthers. The 80-page coffee table book features 200 photos, and 70 cameos that tell the colourful history of the club. “There are hundreds of projects that the Port Macquarie Rotary Club has taken on over the last 70 years that have literally shaped the town that it is today,” says Kerry. “From the first ever project in 1948 when the boys cleared trees to build an air strip; the planting of the Norfolk Pines so synonymous with the Port Macquarie coastline; to the fundraising for the Olympic pool and building of the Rotary Lodge where families of hospital patients can stay close to their loved ones, there’s no doubt Port Macquarie is a better place with a club like Rotary involved.”

Life’s a beach for the Rockin’ Rats Pictured: Members of the Kempsey Macleay Dragon Boat Club and the South West Rocks Dragon Boat Club formed the Rockin’ Rats, who did well at the international Boracay Dragon Boat Festival in the Philippines.

IN LATE April the Kempsey Macleay Dragon Boat Club teamed up with the South West Rocks Dragon Boat Club to form the Rockin’ Rats, and did Australia proud at the Boracay Dragon Boat Festival in the Philippines. The Rockin’ Rats shone at this international festival, achieving two semi-final placings and a silver medal in Women’s Masters. According to Mark Bradney, from the Kempsey Macleay Dragon Boat Club, they only missed out on a gold medal by half a second. Regarded as one of the most prestigious events in the world of dragon boating, the Boracay Dragon Boat Festival attracted 55 teams with over 1000 competitors from Canada, Germany, China, Hong Kong, New Zealand,

Qatar, Singapore, the United Kingdom, USA and the Philippines. “Due to the age of most competitors, the Rockin’ Rats were often conceding 30 to 40 years in the majority of races,” Mark said. “Undaunted by this age difference and with a stern will to triumph in sometimes trying conditions the Rockin’ Rats were able to achieve a great result.” The Boracay Dragon Boat Festival has been held for 12 years now and is a three-day event. The Kempsey Macleay Dragon Boat Club first visited Boracay to take part in the festival in 2012 and had such a fantastic time they were happy to go back and compete again. “The first day was a training day followed by a street parade and a very loud opening ceremony, where each club was required to perform on stage,” Mark explained. “During the next two days the 500-metre

and 250-metre races were held, followed by the closing ceremony.” Deciding not to waste such an amazing location, most of the paddlers took the opportunity to enjoy a seven to 10-day holiday. “So before and after racing everyone was either sunset cruising, banana-boat riding, island hopping, parasailing or sunset sipping just before the island closed for six months for a complete make-over,” Mark added. The Philippines Tourism Board calls Boracay a paradise for sun-worshippers. This little island is located on the northwestern tip of Panay in Aklan, a province on the Visayas island group. “Boracay boasts all the elements of a tropical heaven - crystal blue waters, powdery white sand, liberal doses of tropical palms and flowering plants, and a healthy and diverse marine life,” says the Philippines Tourism Board.

Vibrant local business ‘For Sale’ PAUL and Susan Marshall are keen to retire. The good news for prospective business owners is that their successful and vibrant Settlement City Newsagency and Post Office is ‘For Sale’. “We moved up from Sydney 13 years ago and bought the business and now it’s time for us to retire,” said Paul. “We’ve got a very broad range of customers and it’s an incredibly consistent and loyal customer base.” This ‘one-stop-shop’ in Port Macquarie’s Settlement City Shopping Centre is well known by locals for its customer driven service and high traffic location. It is also the only place in Port Macquarie where both services – newsagent and post office - are available seven days a week. “The reason we have regular customers returning is because of our products and the services we offer,” Paul said. “We also get a lot of seniors as regulars during the day which keeps the store busy at all times.” Their ever-helpful staff offer personal Australia Post services from letter and parcel postage, bill payment, mail redirection and hold, domestic and international money transfer, money orders, travel money and travel insurance. New Personal Super Contributions Rules – Timing is Important With the end of the financial year fast approaching, it’s time to start thinking about income tax deductions. Personal Superannuation Contributions made into your superannuation fund is one way you can increase retirement funds whilst depending on your circumstances claim a tax deduction. This year things changed under the Governments changes to super, effective 1 July 2017, the 10% maximum earnings condition for personal superannuation contributions was removed for the 2017-18 and future financial years. This rule in the past meant an individual must have earned less than 10% of their income from their employment related activities to be able to deduct a personal superannuation contribution. Now from 1 July 2017, individuals can make deductible personal contributions regardless of the amount of salary or wages they earn. This means most individuals under 75 years old can now claim a tax deduction for personal contributions to their superfund (including those aged 65 to 74 who meet the work test). Importantly, however you still need to keep in mind some of the existing rules such as the Concessional Contributions Cap for the 2017/18 financial year is $25,000. You need to ensure that the contribution reaches the fund prior to 30th June 2018. You need to provide a valid notice of intention to deduct to your superfund and have received the acknowledgement of this notice from the superfund to be eligible for the tax deduction in the 2017/18 financial year. How can we help? At Maven Advisors we can assist you to ensure you are maximising your personal superannuation contributions based on your specific circumstances and those of your SMSF. Each individual’s situation and circumstances are different and getting personal advice will assist in determining how much you can contribute and what amount if any could be tax deductible. Owner of Timbertown, David Waite, shares a passion with his wife Alison to make this wonderful heritage town shine even brighter

Timbertown brings rich history to life By SUE PATERICK IT is the whistle of Timbertown’s puffing steam train that causes my grandson to squeal with delight because at two years of age his biggest love is Thomas the Tank Engine. His big blue eyes grow bigger as Ruby the red and green train toots again, and he jiggles excitedly. “Train,” he cries out. “Train!” Timbertown is a re-created timber-getter’s village set among 87 acres of a natural forest of towering blackbutt and tallowwood trees at Wauchope. Designed to depict what life was like in the 1880s to the 1930s, it was first opened in 1976 on land was once owned by the Bain family. The property flows down a shady hill and is watered by a babbling stream. Once known as the Big Log Water Hole, it was where Wauchope town’s folk gathered their fresh water and was a place to rest, graze animals and catch-up for bullock-team drivers and travellers heading to Port Macquarie. While Australia was experiencing a gold rush back in the 1800s, it was cedar known then as red gold that really made the fortunes of folks on the Mid North Coast. After walking through the administration building and gift shop, we step back in time. On our right there is a huge water wheel at the Cedar Creek Goldfield, where you can still pan for gold. While my daughter and I push the stroller down the leafy ramp, we hear my son-in-law, husband and granddaughter call out that they have found gold. The cute train station was empty when we wandered across the track because Ruby was ferrying her passengers though this charming slice of history. I expected to see full-skirted women sheltering from the autumn sun under parasols and menfolk in dapper suits dipping their top hats. There is an art gallery and several log cottages on the way down into a cute town, which boasts a bakery, ice creamery, winery, stables, working blacksmiths, fire station, an original church, and so much more. We had a stage coach ride pulled by draft horse, saw a whip-cracking demonstration and petted all manner of animals from donkeys to bullocks, draft horses, pigs, alpacas and chickens. At one stage a chicken really impressed the grandchildren when it ambled across the quiet dirt road and laid an egg on top of a wooden desk on a verandah. We put my son-in-law in the stocks near the gaol, explored all the buildings and exhibits, and took photos of our faces behind a wooden figurine of a couple in period dress. But the best part of the day was boarding Ruby the red and green steam train and puffing through the forest. “Toot, toot!” Ruby trilled, delighting all the children aboard.

Mila and Sebastian Jimenez enjoy a great day out at Timbertown Timbertown has had its ups and downs but since owners, David and Alison Waite, took over eight years ago its future is looking bright. According to David, the couple took over because they knew Timbertown’s prospects were bleak and someone had to step in and save the place. “People have a choice,” said David. “They can preserve history or just let places as unique as Timbertown close down.” It was hard for the first three or four years and David and Alison learned a few tough lessons. “We’ve learnt a lot in the last few years and have gotten Timbertown to a sustainable position,” David said. “We know we have the energy, ability and drive to see our 10-year plan through to fruition.” Their grand plan is to preserve and revitalise what Timbertown already has, plus construct new display buildings and activities. “Timbertown is an extremely unique heritage timber park,” David said. “And people come from all over the world to see it.” I can’t help thinking what a wonderful place it would be for a wedding or an amateur performance from the local theatre group or a high school drama class. Timbertown employs 12 people in the off season and 30 during school holidays. Employees have the most unusual job descriptions such as a blacksmith, coach driver, bullock driver and whip cracker and of course the train driver, who also operates the miniature train that my granddaughter loved the best. Timbertown is open every day in the NSW School holidays between 9.30am and 4pm, and is open from Thursday to Monday outside of the holidays. For more information on what this delightful glimpse of bygone days has to offer check out its website: timbertown.com.au

Panthers now even more family friendly PANTHERS Port Macquarie has reinforced its reputation as a family friendly venue with the official opening last weekend of a $250,000 mega children’s play area which encompasses facilities for the whole family to enjoy. Long gone are the days when children were rarely seen or heard at pubs and clubs. Panthers have embraced the community concept with their newly opened Backyard that offers an expansive gym and play area for toddlers and teens aged 2 to 16, in proximity to barbecues, bar facilities and seating for the whole family. Panthers General Manager Jamie Williams said the area was five times the size of the old ‘playground’ in what was an under-utilised area of the club. “It’s all about appealing to families with children, a burgeoning part of our membership and families have been the focus of these renovations,” he said. “It’s about getting the kids outside where the parents and grandparents can also meet up, enjoy food and drink while keeping an eye on their youngsters. We have lunar nets for climbing on, a half basketball court, fencing, landscaping and shade out on the Kove Bistro deck.” Mr Williams said they were also appealing to organisers of end of year sporting events and presentations, adding sections that could be hired out.

“We have looked long term and see a need for a venue where our many sporting and community groups can have a venue catering to all ages for their events during the year,” he said. “Importantly too we will be supporting local charities with sausage sizzles on Saturday and Sunday. “The bread, sausages and so on will all be donated by Panthers to local charities, who can operate the weekend sausage sizzles, keeping all the proceeds for their organisation. “We’re proud to be able to give back to the community in this way.” Locals enjoyed the grand opening of the new facility, flocking to the free family fun day last Saturday. Hundreds were keen to have a look at the Backyard which has been six months in the creation. “With shade for summer, and a position overlooking the Hastings River, this outdoor venue is something really special for Panthers and Pictured above and top left: The new Backyard at Panthers Port Macquarie attracted plenty of smiling faces to its recent grand opening Port Macquarie in general,” Mr Williams said.

One of the bands - Disgruntled Architect - in last year’s Rockfest comnpetition

I grew up in Wauchope and went to school in Port Macquarie “and I used to play in band competitions. I actually played in a band with Phil Jamieson before he played with Grinspoon. ROCKFEST is coming to the Mid North Coast. Students across New South Wales will be included in this year’s Rockfest ompetition, which sees the best student bands compete through to the national finals held in Melbourne later this year. “It’s the first time we’ve gone out of Victoria,” said Luc Travers, Rockfest Founder. “This year we are doing New South Wales and Queensland and then there will be about 15 bands that will compete in the national grand finals in Melbourne later this year.” Rockfest is an annual competition that gives students the opportunity to perform the music they love in front of an audience. The Mid North Coast competition will take place on Tuesday May 22 at Camden Haven High School. “I got the idea because there was a lot of eisteddfods and choir groups and more traditional type music with concert and jazz bands but there was not much out there for contemporary music,” explains Luc. “So that was the focus of it, to give the high school

and primary school kids an outlet to play their own stuff. “We find that on the day all the bands support each other and are back stage helping each other and singing with each other, and we’ve been really conscious to keep that vibe in the competition.” 2017 saw 900 high school students from more than 100 schools compete in Rockfest’s Band competition, competing to over 3000 people. “We have regional rounds which include junior and senior students, and then the winner of the senior division will be flown down to Melbourne – flights and accommodation paid for,” said Luc. “There will be about 15 bands in the grand finals and we’ve got about 10 bands entered from the Mid North Coast and we expect more as it gets closer.” Luc Travers knows all too well the talent pool that the Mid North Coast holds and how important these competitions are to encourage young musicians. “I grew up in Wauchope and went to school in Port Macquarie and I used to play in band competitions,” said Luc. “I actually

20

played in a band with Phil Jamieson before he played with Grinspoon. I sung and played guitar and we won the Port Macquarie ‘Battle of the Bands’ in 1993. “The competition also inspires other young kids sitting in the audience to get involved because they will see students compete and then you’ll find the following year we will get double the number of entrants.” Luc says this year even more schools and students will be involved due to the introduction of the solo and duo category.
Divided in to two age groups, RockFest features a Junior Category which is Years 7-9 and a Senior Category which includes Years 10-12.

This year also sees the inclusion of several high profile musicians as judges at several of the local heats, such as Phil Jamieson, who will be a guest judge at the national finals. See the best young musicians from the Mid North Coast rock it out on Tuesday, May 22 at Camden Haven High. For more information about Rockfest visit www.rockfest.net.au

Budget delivers after good fiscal management THE Federal Coalition Government’s strong management of the nation’s economy is continuing to deliver important dividends to the people of Australia, including our local area. This year’s federal budget will deliver significant benefits for the region, including more funding for infrastructure, aged care and tax relief for many local households. Our economic plan for Australia is clearly working. As we continue to grow the economy, more jobs are being created and more investment is taking place, and this is providing us with the capacity to invest in more programs important to our region. Over 20,000 new home care packages have been announced, millions of dollars in additional funds for the Building Better Regions, Stronger Communities, Rural Health and sports program have been secured, and a record infrastructure rollout can now proceed as part of this year’s budget thanks to the responsible management of our nation’s finances. We are delivering tax relief with a focus on low and middle income households, and responsibly returning the budget to balance, meaning that we can continue to guarantee the

CANBERRA CONNECTIONS With Dr David Gillespie Federal MP for Lyne

essential services Australians rely on. I’ll be continuing to work with local communities and councils in my electorate to identify and develop local projects that will continue to boost the region’s economy. The injection of additional funding into our regional programs provides our community with an opportunity to not only support projects that will create local jobs, but also deliver essential infrastructure to the long-term benefits of our region. The Federal Coalition Government’s budget plan is focussed on: • Deliver lower, fairer and simpler taxes to encourage and reward working Australians; • Back businesses to invest and create more jobs, building on our legislated tax cuts for small and medium enterprise, supporting businesses to compete globally, delivering

infrastructure that industry and workers rely on; and targeting incentives to promote research, development and new technology; • Guarantee the essential services that Australians rely on including record funding for hospitals and schools, a comprehensive approach to aged care so older Australians can live life to the full, and guaranteed funding for disability services. • Keep Australians safe by strengthening security at airports and investing more in our intelligence and security service so they can respond to new and challenging threats. We will also protect our unique environment with smarter biosecurity systems and continue to safeguard our borders. • Ensure the Government lives within its means with a forecast return to modest budget balance in 2019-20, increasing to a projected surplus of $11 billion in 2020-21; no longer borrowing to pay for essential services; and the lowest average real growth in payments of any Government in the last 50 years. The reason this Budget has been able to deliver record funding in so many areas is a result of responsible economic management.

ONCE again this week we saw mixed results for our pennant sides. The 2s again fell agonizingly short of a first win going down 55-59 at home to Kempsey RSL. Dave Carney won 17-13, Harro went down 19-25 and Jeff Purdy unluckily losing 19-21 (points 1-9). Despite losing 1 rink the 5s had a great win away against Westport winning 65-49. Ken Ansley stormed to a 28-9 win, Adolf hung on to win 22-18 and Lester Thurgate’s side suffered their 1st defeat of the season going down 15-23 (points 1-9). While the 7s won 2 rinks it wasn’t enough to get them home on the scoreboard going down 58-67. Teddy Scott won 22-18, Paul Ireland’s side lost the last 6 ends but were able to hang on to win 21-18 and unfortunately Graham Gillard went down 16-31

footytips

Maroon form concern SO, another tough weekend at the NRL tipping office. And another just as tough one this weekend. Unfortunately this topsy-turvy league season is about to throw up another ‘upset’. We are nearing Origin time and a peek at the ladder reveals that not one Queensland team is in the top eight – Broncos (9th), Cowboys (14th) and Titans (15th). So even the yearly certainty of the Maroons taking the Blues into deep water and watching them flounder is looking remote. Of course the one saviour for the Cane Toads is Cam Smith’s Melbourne, who are the unofficial fourth Queensland team. They sit in fourth spot, so may go into Origin with some winning form. But back to the NRL, it was another weekend of upsets with the Dragons and Warriors both coming up empty. However the form of the Roosters and Rabbitohs is interesting. Don’t be surprised if either or both are challenging the Dragons for competition favouritism before too long. OK – let’s get some winners: Panthers v Wests Tigers (Thursday, May 17, 7.50pm, Panthers Stadium, Penrith): OK, a real bell-ringer to start off round 11. Both these sides had great wins last weekend (Panthers over knights and Tigers over Cowboys) so both will be coming in confident. Just one win separates this duo. The bookies have the early favouritism with the Panthers, who also have the home advantage. Probably enough to sway our tip in that direction. Your Local Independent tips:

Panthers Eels v Warriors (Friday, May 18, 6pm, ANZ Stadium, Sydney): Warriors won’t have hit the panic button just yet, but their 32-0 home loss to the Roosters last weekend would have brought on some worry lines. They are still in (equal) second place, but this is a congested ladder and another loss will hurt. Meanwhile the Eels fell back into their losing ways. Your Local Independent tips: Warriors Broncos v Roosters (Friday, May 18, 7.55pm, Suncorp Stadium, Brisbane): Very hard to favour the Broncos given last week’s results. Brisbane fell to lowly-placed Manly, while the Roosters were exceptional in trouncing the Warriors. As YLI pointed out last week, the Roosters have been winning without hitting their straps. They hit them against the Warriors last weekend and looked very good. Meanwhile the Broncos look very shaky and have been edged out of the eight. Your Local Independent tips: Roosters Titans v Knights (Saturday, May 19, 3pm, Cbus Super Stadium, Gold Coast): Another two teams coming off losses. However you can make an argument for both teams. The Titans were far from disgraced in their loss to the Storm, while the Knights showed glimpses of where they are headed in their loss to the Panthers. Pretty close with the bookies, but will give the Titans one more chance. Your Local Independent tips: Titans Cowboys v Rabbitohs (Saturday,

Sharon Griffiths

May 19, 5.30pm, 1300SMILES Stadium, Townsville): The ups and downs of rugby league and how quickly things change. After upsetting the Dragons last weekend, the Rabbitohs are looking really hot. Meanwhile the Cowboys’ season just keeps diving. This is a home game for the Cows, but they may need more than that. The names are the same, but the chemistry is out of whack. Your Local Independent tips: Rabbitohs Storm v Sea Eagles (Saturday, May 19, 7.35pm, AAMI Park, Melbourne): The rest of the comp may be going haywire, but at least you can (pretty) safely bet on the Storm. They are not as iron-clad as other seasons, but are still up in fourth place. Manly pulled one out of the hat last weekend to topple the Broncos. Their form isn’t as bad as the press reports. But can’t see another upset here. Your Local Independent tips: Storm Dragons v Raiders (Sunday, May 20, 2pm, Glen Willow Oval, Mudgee): Look out Raiders. The Dragons will be filthy that they dropped their guard against the Rabbitohs last weekend. That was just their second loss of the season. The Raiders meanwhile stumbled against the Sharks after showing some better form in recent weeks. This game goes out west to Mudgee. Considering the Dragons are one of the best supported teams nationally, this could be a home away from home game for them. Your Local Independent tips: Dragons Sharks v Bulldogs (Sunday, May 20, 4.10pm Southern Cross Group
