Hero of a dark chapter KEMPSEY’S Ian Jones was just 19 when he survived one of Australia’s most famous military battles – the Vietnam war’s Battle of Long Tan in 1966. Today (Thursday, August 18) Jones will join many comrades in celebrating the 50th anniversary of that battle. He will be in Canberra,
while others have made the trek to Vietnam. A total of 18 Australia soldiers were killed and a further 24 were wounded on that bloody day. In comparison, 878 Viet Cong enemy died and a further 1500 were wounded. • See Page 3 for CHRISTINA PARKIN’S LOO LOOS Toilet Hire story.

MANY people in the community have been asking who I am and where did I come from to be suddenly standing as a Mayoral Candidate and asking the voters to consider me for one of the most important positions in our Community. I came to Port Macquarie with my parents as a small child soon after my father returned from the Vietnam War and happily lived close to my grandparents who established the Riverlodge Caravan Park at Blackman’s Point in the early ‘70s. I began school at Westport Primary and remember coming home one day to find that there would be no more school for me because we were moving to the city. That ‘city’ turned out to be an army house at Hoxton Park before moving to the Holsworthy Army base and was fortunate as an army kid to stay in the one area without moving around like many military families do. The Port Macquarie area has always been like home for me. Every school holidays I was brought from Sydney to my grandparents home and stayed with them for weeks at a time and have great memories of when Peppermint Park first opened and the excitement of the waterslides along with the fun of a day at Fantasy Glades, sadly now both gone. As an adult and starting my own family, I wanted my children to experience the more relaxed environment of Port Macquarie and so my husband Craig and I packed up the Camira station wagon, our two-year-old daughter and headed nine hours up the coast to start our new life and settled in the King Creek/Wauchope area. Our son was born as a ‘local’ at the old Port Macquarie base hospital before it closed and both of our children were schooled at Wauchope and later at St Columba. This Community has provided so much for my husband and I and has been a great place to raise our family, work and grow my civil engineering and road maintenance business, Stabilcorp. My connection to Port Macquarie is a strong one and my decision to stand as a Candidate for Mayor is based on a desire to see the area grow responsibly into the future. Being exposed to a military upbringing instilled a number of values in me being respect, accountability, integrity and leadership. I use those same values in my own business and believe that our Community requires a Mayor who will offer accountability for the decisions of Council and not protect those who are involved in poor decision making which leads to higher costs to the community. If I am trusted with your vote on September 10, I will serve the Community by putting the needs of the majority first. I will engage with all Community groups to

ensure that the areas they represent have a say in the direction of our Council and make sure the areas outside of Port Macquarie are more inclusive and not isolated. I will make myself available to meet with you and listen to your concerns and if required represent you in the chamber of Council. I will ensure that I work closely with the General Manager to ensure that the Council is operating as efficiently and effectively as possible. I will report to the Community in an open, honest and transparent manner. I will work with our elected State and Federal Members to secure the best result for our Community. And I will say NO to the 52.4% planned rate rise or to any rate rise over the NSW State Government mandated rate peg. To get the best result for our Community vote below the line and choose individuals who will give a diverse range of experiences instead of groups who may vote only as a block and hold the balance of power in Council. Remember in the ballot box you have the power once every 4 years to create the Council YOU want to represent you. The choice is yours.

Look up and learn
Then 19-year-old Gunner Ian Jones standing next to a vehicle at Task Force 1 Headquarters at Nui Dat in 1966
Heroes of Long Tan By CHRISTINA PARKIN
HE was only 19 - freshly recruited to the army, trained at Canungra and Townsville and shipped off to Vietnam as one of the men in Australia’s First Task Force based at Nui Dat. Gunner Ian Jones, from Kempsey, and formerly an artillery driver with the First Field Regiment 103 Field Battery will be attending the 50th commemoration of the Battle of Long Tan in Canberra today. Some have even travelled to Vietnam to mark the occasion. “The beauty of artillery is that you were back a bit … it was very complex, but I didn’t need to understand what was going on. I just had a job to do,” says Mr Jones. Ian will be meeting up with many others who survived the first Australian battle with the Viet Cong and North Vietnamese army in a rubber plantation at the foothills of Nui Dat, not far from the deserted village of Long Tan. Ian felt he escaped relatively unscathed, only because of the excellent training he and his regiment had received. The ‘search and destroy’ skills they were trained in replaced the traditional ‘battle lines’ of past wars and were developed from the lessons learnt from jungle warfare experiences Australia had in Malaya and Borneo just before the Vietnam War. Australia increased its commitment to the Vietnamese War in 1966 to include a two battalion ‘task force’ with appropriate support units. They were to take over the responsibility for securing Phuoc Tuy province on the coast, south east of Saigon. Despite a mortar attack on the night of
August 17, 1966, resulting in 24 casualties, a series of three concerts featuring Little Pattie and Col Joye and the Joy Boys went ahead but had to be cut short during their third performance to evacuate them away from the battle that began mid-afternoon. “It was a really intensive five hours – there were longer battles, but Long Tan had the biggest ratio of enemy to our troops on the ground caught during a patrol,” says Mr Jones. “There were 18 killed and 24 wounded, but it was astounding that the three battalions of North Vietnamese soldiers and the Viet Cong didn’t get on top of the Aussies. “It was because of the support of the artillery and the intervention of the armoured personnel carriers that the situation was turned around.” Ian served his twelve months before returning safely to Australia and leaving the army when his three-year contract had been completed. When speaking about the Long Tan experience, Ian claims that the experience didn’t really affect him a lot, no flashbacks, only some small things. “We lived at Epping and I’d hear the Channel 7 chopper go over and the hackles on the back of my neck would go up – it would stop me in my tracks and I would just shiver,” explains Mr Jones. “Like the song, I had only turned 19 the month before we left to go over. “When I first heard that line in the Redgum song ‘I Was Only 19’ when it first came out – wow – the same thing happened.” Ian claims it’s the way you look at it and your attitude to everything that protects you. He said
he was so happy to get home, he didn’t let the experience get to him, but stressed he also wasn’t in the infantry whose men were often the most affected. “I felt justified in what we did – we were in the Army to do as we were told. “We were well trained and my boss reckoned we were the best artillery unit that went over and arguably the best unit because no one got in strife and we all coped well under pressure.” One of Ian’s mates in his unit in Vietnam was ‘Fritz’(Robert) Furtner, whose father in WWII was a Panzer commander fighting Ian’s father, who was in an anti-tank unit in the middle east. “Our fathers, and grandfathers went to war without question, just like we did, but if my children had to go through a similar experience, I’d be quite confident that they would step up.” “At the age of 19, you are impressionable, but you also feel you are ‘bullet-proof’ or you say ‘I won’t get hurt’, but then you can just as easily get hit by a bus or killed in a car accident while on leave, just like my mate from our unit did.” If you’d like to view an excellent nailbiting summary of the battle of Long Tan, visit www.103fieldbatteryraa.net/documents/117. html (As a comparison, a list recovered from a Viet Cong dispensary in late 1969 described 878 KIA/missing/died of wounds and approximately 1500 WIA (wounded in action) for the enemy during the Battle of Long Tan.)
FANCY doing a bit of star gazing? Tomorrow night, Friday August 19 will be a perfect opportunity to wrap the family up, enjoy a BBQ and learn all about ‘Sky Stories’. Future Moves Sky Stories Project is an initiative of Charles Sturt University working with local public schools. In the Hastings Valley, Hastings Secondary College (HSC), Port Macquarie and Westport Campuses, as well as Wauchope High School are involved. Sky Stories is a project that uses astronomy with a blended Indigenous and Western perspective to engage students in Science, Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). An integral element of the project is acknowledging the links between students, family, community and their sky stories. The free community event will be held at Sancrox Reserve, Colvin Street at Sancrox, near Wauchope from 5 – 8pm. Everyone is invited to bring along their own telescopes and binoculars, as well as their mobile phones, iPads and tablets, or make use of provided telescopes to explore the night sky. Experts will be on hand to answer your astronomy questions, help you with your technology and explore the Indigenous use of the sky. Weeds a dead giveaway for neglect IN reference to the roundabout and median strips at the intersection of Houston Mitchell and Ocean Drives, Lake Cathie. A substantial amount of time, effort and not to mention money,
has gone into these roadworks, but unfortunately has now been left to accumulate weeds, many weeds. Recently some effort was put in to poison these weeds but this has only made the situation look grimmer.
Now, instead of flourishing tall green weeds, we have dead, tall brown weeds, interspersed with new growth. As this area also showcases our new Lake Cathie Public School, it would be great if Council could find
a permanent solution to obliterate this scar and beautify what is a major and integral part of our local area. Sue Lacey Bonny Hills

Patches wear thin LIKE a roller coaster ride courtesy of Port Macquarie Council? Just drive down Webb Street in the Wauchope CBD bus route. Council has been patching the road for years, never doing the complete job properly. Rather like the majority of old footpaths in Wauchope CBD, a patch here, a patch there, just enough to cover offending cracks and the occasional bloodstain. But wait! Could it be because we only pay rates? Council has approached Wauchope Chamber of Commerce on the concept of a fund, something the Chamber has not embraced, not surprising considering that safe footpaths and

SO the gloves are off and the campaign train is growing momentum! Toot, toot! Just four weeks to go and we will find out who our new Councillors are for both the Hastings and Macleay. In the meantime, as voters we have a job to do. Don’t just sit back in your comfy recliner moaning about Council and candidates. You have a short time to get informed and make your votes count. Your Local Independent will be doing its best to bring you as much information as possible about the candidates running for both elections however there is only so much we can do. I urge you to contact the candidates yourself and find out what makes them tick and what they stand for. If you’re not happy with the results over the last four years talk to the candidates and find out where they stand and what they intend to do moving forward. If you’ve got burning issues to put out to candidates send us a letter to the editor and we can give them a right of reply. Personally, I’d like to know from the candidates where they stand in regards to utilising local businesses for their resources and procurement of goods. I know for a fact they don’t use local businesses for purchasing fleet vehicles and stationery and that is just the tip of the iceberg! Surely Council should, where possible support locally owned businesses first.

Wildwood has popular problem “
The aim of the festival was to always keep it boutique-style and to bring the people of Port the best music and the best atmosphere
“
By LIZZIE McLEOD SIMON Leigh has a problem. His upcoming Wildwood Music Festival keeps getting bigger, but he doesn’t want it to lose its unique, boutique atmosphere. “The aim of the festival was to always keep it boutique-style and to bring the people of Port the best music and the best atmosphere,” said Simon. In just its third year, at the Cassegrain Winery in Port Macquarie, the folk-style festival is becoming of one of Australia’s favourite boutique events with its natural surroundings and laid-back atmosphere. Last year’s event attracted more than a thousand people for the seven acts. This year’s festival, on October 2, is expected to bring in even more people with a longer list of performers across more stages. However Simon says organisers are working hard not to lose what is special about Wildwood, because even the ‘locals’ play along. “At the conclusion of last year’s event, the whole forest was filled with fireflies as punters
Australian roots ensemble Blue King Brown are a headline act for this year’s Wildwood Music Festival at Port Macquarie were leaving the venue,” said Simon. “Adults and kids alike were covered from head to toe illuminated in their sparkling aurora, it was truly a magical ending to a really special day.” Next year there are plans for patrons to be able to camp on site. This year’s line-up is an impressive mix of local and international acts including Blue King Brown, Montaigne, Claude Hay, The Lyrical, Mar Haze, James Bennett, Roy Rose, Benje
Travis, Lauren Edwards, Sam Verkoute and Royal Chant. “I’m trying to keep it sort of rootsy and folky,” said Simon. “Blue King Brown was the ideal fit. Montaigne will also be performing, she is definitely a bit poppy, but she is still quite an Earthy artist. “We also have a lot of really amazing talent in the area who will be performing this year.” Wildwood will also include children’s

In 1916 the planting of the Camden Haven Memorial Trees in Laurieton, now referred to as the ‘Avenues of Honour’ was the first World War 1 planting in Australia and the British Commonwealth
“
6
Trees keep alive memories of sacrifice By CHRISTINA PARKIN A UNIQUE anniversary associated with World War I is occurring on August 19 and it has a very special link to the town of Laurieton. “In 1916 the planting of the Camden Haven Memorial Trees in Laurieton, now referred to as the ‘Avenues of Honour’ was not only the first World War 1 planting in Australia and the British Commonwealth, but encompassed three streets in the shape of a cross rather than the one avenue that would become normal practice elsewhere,” explains Phil Bowman, President of the Camden Haven Historical Society. The Memorial Trees were planted in Laurie Street (the main street at that time) between Norman Street and the Camden Haven River; Bold Street, between Tunis and Hanley Streets and Lake Street adjacent to the Laurieton School, well ahead of any other recorded World War I plantings in Australia and the British Commonwealth. Phil is keen to see the remaining trees be admitted to a Cultural Heritage registry and is also seeking information from families associated with the 156 men who enlisted in World War I, who may be still living in properties associated with these memorial trees. The first World War I Memorial Tree planting that took place in Laurieton on August 19, 1916, was proposed by Robert Longworth and the idea was readily taken up by the community. Robert Longworth, the town’s leading timber miller at that time, was chairman of the Tree Planting Committee. Longworth’s firm donated the timber for the tree guards and provided the labour to dig the 157 holes for those men who had enlisted from Laurieton, Kew, Kendall and Comboyne. The Secretary of the Tree Planting Committee was Harry Robertson, part owner
Above: The Camphor Laurel situated in front of the School of Arts Hall is one of the healthier remaining memorial trees, Left: Bold Street in 1916, looking south near the day Laurieton Hotel, notated as ‘Showing trees planted in memory of our Soldier Boys
of the Robertson-Rose General Store in Laurie Street. As reported in a paper clipping held by the Camden Haven Historical Society: “As there were 156 trees to be planted, it may be guessed that the committee had a lot of work to do. Guards had to be made for each tree and the ground had to be got ready. Messrs. Longworths, Ltd, generously provided the labor for the preparing of the plantations, also the timber for making the guards. The townspeople set to work and made the guards, whilst the Committee had to arrange the allotting of the trees. At first it was the intention of the Committee to plant only enough trees to represent soldiers who had enlisted from Laurieton….While the war still went on, they would remember the men who had gone forth, revere the memory of the men who had fallen, and honour the service they had rendered in their efforts to cast down the German
and Austrian nations.” The first tree planted was a Norfolk Island pine at the intersection of Laurie and Bold Streets in honour of Field Marshal H H Kitchener, later Earl, then Lord Kitchener, British Secretary of State for War, a senior British Army officer who was acclaimed for his role in the early part of World War I. The Laurieton plantings are also unique in that some of the soldiers planted their own trees before going off to war. Ernst Rose planted his tree outside the ‘Robertson-Rose General Store’ which he sold to go to the war. The tree, two down from the Laurie Tree described below, died in 2016 after a lightning strike. Ernest Rose is only one of three people that can be associated to a specific tree. At the time of the Laurieton planting, Private Colin Arnott had already been killed at Fromelles. Private Arnott’s remains were recently identified
through DNA testing and have been re-interned at Fromelles in France. Within nine months of the initial planting, Private Robert Laurie died at Messines, France, on June 12, 1917. In a ceremony on August 17, 1918, the wooden tree guard around Robert Laurie’s Memorial Tree was replaced with a Victorian wrought iron fence of the type so familiar in cemeteries of the period. The site became his surrogate grave, his tree the surrogate headstone, marked with a plaque. The plaque is unique in that the dates for World War 1 are shown as ‘1914 -’. No final year is shown as the war was yet to end and the plaque was never finished. Only 33 trees now survive out of a known 157 planted, most being Camphor Laurels followed by a mixture of Norfolk, Hoop and Bunyah pines, mainly in Laurie Street. Now that Camphor Laurels are considered noxious weeds, this presents a dilemma for Port Macquarie-Hastings Council. Job barriers broken
KEY Employment and Kempsey businesses are breaking down the barriers for people with disabilities to help them find and maintain employment. Key Employment’s motto is to Achieve Anything, and according to their Kempsey Site Manager, Stacy Pankhurst, Key Employment’s seven consultants will help their clients address any obstacles to employment they may have. “This ranges from creating resumes to marketing to employers, helping with interview preparation and going to interviews,” she said. “Once work is found, Key Employment then assists with support in the workplace to both our client and the employer.” One of the businesses working with Key Employment is That PlaYce café in West Kempsey, where several of Key’s clients have undertaken their traineeships. It was set up by YP Space, a youth homelessness organisation based in Kempsey and Port Macquarie to offer opportunities to young people with little or no work experience. Manager of That PlaYce, Leanne Anderson, likes seeing the growth in her team in developing work and life skills. Staff members, Emma Clarke and Jesse Walker, like their job because it is a supportive environment to work in. “And it makes me feel good when I get compliments from the customers,” said Jesse. Mrs Pankhurst explained the benefits of the partnership. “I love YP Space because it has the same values and mission statement as Key Employment and it provides great opportunities for our clients, which empowers them to change their lives,” she said. The courses are Certificate II qualifications in Business, Retail and Hospitality, including their transition to work KAPOW (Kids and the Power of Work) program for young people no longer at school. According to Key Employment consultant, Lisa Reed, KAPOW is a brilliant program for youth that have been disengaged from traditional education because of their disability and are often told they can’t achieve their dreams. Key Employment’s vision is to provide
extraordinary services to people with disability and other disadvantages so they get equitable access to jobs, fulfilling careers, traineeships and apprenticeships and further study. Another of its goals is to help and support their clients so they can participate to their fullest potential across the social, cultural and economic life of their communities. CANBERRA CONNECTIONS With Dr David Gillespie Federal MP for Lyne
VETERANS and Defence personnel will benefit from the Coalition Government’s employment initiative and attention on mental health. Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull will host the first Prime Minister’s Veterans’ Employment Initiative in November that will help find ways for business to better use the skills of veterans and assist former defence personnel transition to civilian employment. The Australians who have served in our armed forces have developed skills and leadership qualities that would be valuable to any business. The Prime Minister’s Veterans’ Employment Initiative will bring business leaders and veterans face-to-face so we can develop ways to effectively utilise this talent. I encourage businesses and other employers to think about the skills offered by our veterans and how they could use them. The Government has tasked the National Mental Health Commission with reviewing the suicide and self-harm prevention services available to veterans and Australian Defence Force (ADF) members. One suicide is one too many and we all must address mental health issues together. The Coalition Government has announced an additional $192 million to tackle mental health challenges across our community and $46.4 million specifically for veterans and Defence personnel to access free mental health treatment. This review will improve our understanding of mental health challenges and lead to better treatment for our veterans and the wider community. This is an issue right across our community and a particular issue with our veterans. This is an issue we have to tackle together — all of us need to be more aware of the challenges of mental illness and the debt we owe to our service men and women.

Funds unite communities
MORE funding to unite our community: Funding is now available to celebrate our cultural diversity and help bring the community together. The 2016/17 Unity and Celebration Grants, which form part of the Multicultural NSW Grants Program, provide funding for projects which help unite local communities, promote social cohesion and showcase the benefits of cultural diversity. Our area is home to people from all corners of the world. The Unity and Celebration Grants are a great way to not only bring our community together, but celebrate our diverse and harmonious community. I would encourage local not-for-profit organisations or local councils working in partnership with community organisations to apply. Unity Grants provide up to $30,000 to support local community projects, and Celebration Grants provide up to $5,000 for festivals and events that

Official figures show the NSW Government is continuing to support thousands of people to realise their dream of buying a home, with the number of first homeowner grants rising by almost 11 per cent over the last financial year. OSR data showed the two grant programs, the First Home Owner Grant scheme and the First Home - New Home scheme, were delivering steady and successful results. Last financial year the number of First Home Owner Grants increased by about 900 to around 9,400. Since 2012, the First Home Owner Grant scheme has been targeted to encourage increased housing supply, providing $10,000 towards the construction or purchase of newly built homes valued up to $750,000. The First Home - New Home scheme provides further financial assistance for first homebuyers by offering full exemptions from stamp duty on new homes valued up to $550,000, and stamp duty concessions on new homes valued between $550,000 and $650,000.

We’ve revived ‘sperate’ my
HAVE you ever heard of ‘sperate’, not ‘desperate’ but ‘sperate’? I was thinking of a word to write about when ‘sperate’ crossed my desk, or what sometimes passes as my desk (‘Move this junk, so I can get dinner ready’). I must admit, I had never heard of ‘sperate’, until a Dr Goodword sent it to me. This word comes from ‘speratus’, that refers to ‘hoped for’. If you feel hopeless, you sometimes despair. But the word ‘sperate’ has almost never been used, at least in recent times. Dr Goodword said ‘sperate’ had ‘been left to die alone in law offices’. He said the word had a meaning of ‘hoped for, anticipated, having some likelihood of recovering debts’. So far as I can tell, the word ‘sperate’ had its first use in 1551, when it referred to ‘sperate debtes’. Ten years later debts were referred to in the comment that nobody knew which debts were bad and which were ‘sperate’. There was some hope of recovering ‘sperate’ debts. As late as 1798 an attempt was made to distinguish debts according to which were bad and which were ‘sperate’. The word found limited general use. In 1824 the United States Supreme Court tried to distinguish when a vessel moved from a ‘sperate’ to a desperate state ‘or arrives at a situation of unseaworthiness’. You will have gathered by now that ‘sperate’ has a connection to desperate. ‘Desperate’ has remained in our language, but ‘sperate’ has died a lonely death, unlamented by all who knew it. Eliezer Edwards’ dictionary of 1901 said ‘sperate’ was an excellent word, although little used. “It means to hope reasonably and is the exact opposite of desperate,” the dictionary said. In 1755 Samuel Johnson, in his dictionary, said ‘sperable’ meant ‘such as may be hoped’. The current edition of the Merriam Webster dictionary says ‘sperate’ means ‘giving some

hope of being paid’. What has ‘sperate’ have to do with ‘desperate’? Johnson in his 1755 dictionary said ‘desperate’ meant ‘violent’. Then he gave an example: “She fell desperately in love with him”. Okay, so they did things differently a few hundred years ago. Love is blind anyway, so maybe she didn’t mean to hit him. My big Oxford dictionary says ‘desperate’ means having lost or abandoned hope. In other words, I presume, you’ll never be paid. They once had a television show headed ‘Desperate Housewives’. I never watched it, but I presume they weren’t paid either. ‘Desperate’ also means despairing, or extremely violent and ready to run any risk. You can think of associated words, such as desperado (‘a person in a desperate condition’). I like ‘desperacy’ (‘beyond recovery’). I can think of a few people that this word would define. Desperate also means having been given an assignment ‘that there is no hope of carrying out’. ‘Despair’, which in some respects has taken over from ‘sperate’, means ‘lack of hope’. Shakespeare’s language was English, and ‘wench’ is still good English, although less common than it was in Shakespeare’s day. It means a young woman. Nowadays it might have a connotation of being low by birth or of dubious character, but it had no such connotations in Shakespeare’s day. lauriebarber.com; lbword@midcoast.com.au

Port Macquarie-Hastings Council elections - advertising feature
Searle is ready to work for you “
I want to carry on being a great ambassador/ spokesperson/ fighter for our region and our needs
“
AS an active member of his local community, Kingsley Searle is no stranger to ‘rolling up the sleeves’ and putting his energies into what is needed. A ‘local’ since the ‘70s, Kingsley wants a ‘back to basics’ council - drainage and basic infrastructure needs to be prioritised. The strategy of patching potholes as a temporary fix is false economy. The roads need to be repaired properly, as do many of the local drains, so we don’t keep coming back to it. “This will mean a slow recovery at the start, but eventually we will start to climb on top of the problem,” explains Mr Searle. “The alternative is to carry on as we are until the situation becomes unsolvable. “If we don’t act and start addressing these issues they will overwhelm us in the near future.” Kingsley and his wife, Vivianne, built their home on the North Shore and raised a daughter, Kimberley, and a son, Tyron, who are now both married and live in Port Macquarie and have families of their own. When asked by many people in the community if he would stand for council, it was a well-considered decision. He sees it as a natural progression arising from many years of representing the community at the grassroots level to now representing the community as their voice in council. Kingsley believes there is a need to keep the community consultations rolling out. For too many years the council was focused too inward. The changing emphasis to a focus on community forums is something Kingsley is passionate about. Kingsley has had wide experience in a number of occupations and is a self-employed electrical contractor. However, it is Kingsley’s dedication
Long-time community worker Kingsley Searle to his local community which has drawn the widespread encouragement to nominate as a councillor. For over 30 years, Kingsley has been an
awarded member of the Rural Fire Service; the North Shore Progress Association holding various committee positions including president for the last three years and secretary for the
NSW Farmers Federation Hastings River Oyster Branch. As a member of Council’s Coast, Estuary and Floodplain Advisory Sub-committee, Kingsley understands the workings of council processes and is well positioned to work with council employees to communicate the needs of local residents. A local solution Kingsley was able to negotiate with Council was the allocation of gardening equipment that North Shore residents could access to help keep the riverside park tidier between scheduled Council maintenance visits. “I want to carry on being a great ambassador/ spokesperson/fighter for our region and our needs, says Kingsley. “I want to represent the 78,000 residents of this Local Government Area and I believe that if we focus on the needs of our residents and support and build our communities first, then residents and visitors will both benefit and enjoy the unique culture that typifies our area.”

Sponsored by SkillsLink Training - your community college.
SkillsLink gets you work-ready
WHEN you’re finishing high school it can be scary thinking of what to do next if you’re not an academic type. SkillsLink has a special program for such young people finishing school and those who want to increase their confidence to find work. People living with disability can find it really hard to break through the employment barrier, so the college has designed a targeted set of courses called ‘Stepping Up’ which help to make a difference. If you’d like to find work in the Retail Industry there is a Retail School to Work Transition program, which focuses on supermarket and shop skills. It includes topics such as maths at work, measuring and estimating, speaking skills in the workplace, writing for work documents and working effectively in service environments. For those more comfortable with technology there is a Stepping Up Information Technology transition to employment program. Learning computer and internet skills for working in an office or shop can get you started in a whole new area of work, where you use different communication skills. And it’s fun getting used to working devices just like your phone or laptop at home. All SkillsLink work-related programs also include work life skills, personal presentation, interview skills, and time management. They generally take up to 15 weeks, with two or three sessions each week lasting for about three hours. Graduates receive a recognised Certificate in whichever qualification they complete. Courses can start any time, as long as we can enrol a minimum of six people to begin with, and you can put your name down any time as well. Concessions are available, and if you would like more information please call in at 77 Hastings River Drive, at the bottom of Clifton Drive, or ring 6583 7288 and visit our website on www.skillslinktraining.com.au.

Rescue vessel prepares for action WEDNESDAY afternoon, August 10, was a perfect day to deliver the new rescue vessel for the Port Macquarie Marine Rescue. The journey from Crowdy Head was skippered by Unit Commander, Neil Yates and had Jenny Edmunds from the Westport Club sharing the helm. Other crew members displayed the powerful water pump and fire hose that has been included in the fitout. Training of the units’ members will now proceed before the vessel is officially ready for duty.

ACROSS the Cowper electorate today, services will be held to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan; the bloodiest and fiercest battle of the Vietnam War. It is a day to honour the sacrifice of our servicemen and women during the Vietnam War and thank our Vietnam War veterans who fought for the Australian values and freedoms that we have in place today. Almost 60,000 Australians served in Vietnam from 1962 until 1975. We have veterans in the Port Macquarie-Hastings area, some of whom live with the scars of war, and there are others who just never made it home. In total, 521 lost their lives in Vietnam and more than 3,000 soldiers were wounded. Fifty years later, many more veterans continue to suffer because of their service. The Battle of Long Tan was one of the fiercest battles fought by Australian soldiers in the Vietnam War.
THE COWPER REPORT
WANT to feel like royalty? Well, be on the starting line for this Sunday’s (August 21) King of the Mountain Fun Run at Laurieton’s North Brother Mountain. Hundreds of locals will be running, walking, skipping, and scootering their way to the summit. The 5km fun run is a community event that has been run by the Camden Haven Surf Life Saving Club for the past three years, this being the fourth. The competition can become fierce, as there are many prizes to be won. “The first male and female adult, the ‘King and Queen’ will win $500 each,” said President of Camden Haven Surf Club, Glen O’Brien. “The first male and female child, the ‘Prince and Princess’ will win $250 each. “They usually run it in less than half an hour, so it’s pretty good money for a half hour run, especially for the under 17s.” Not only is it a great chance to pick up some extra cash, it is also an opportunity to support families affected by cystic fibrosis. “The money goes towards the surf club and we also separately raise money in the lead up and on the day for cystic fibrosis,” said Mr O’Brien. “There’s a local family that sadly lost one of their children to cystic fibrosis. Fortunately another child has beaten this disease after an organ transplant and she is very passionate about keeping up awareness and raising funds. “In the last three years they have raised over $10,000 to help fight cystic fibrosis.” Last year’s event brought in 350 people and this year Mr O’Brien hopes to see at least 500 competitors. He has competed the last three years and says he always looks forward to seeing what the groups of team competitors bring to the table. “The biggest team receives a $300 restaurant voucher,” Mr O’Brien said. “Some teams dress up as superheroes or spacemen, so we give a $100 restaurant voucher to the best dressed team.” There will also be a $2,000 travel voucher up for grabs on the day of the event. The fun run is open to all ages and levels of fitness and is a great day for family fun and helping the community. The King of the Mountain fun run will take place this Sunday, August 21, at the North Brother Mountain, Laurieton, from 9am. Registrations are open until Saturday afternoon via www.chslsc.com
Anniversary a tribute to our Aussie heroes With Luke Hartsuyker
Federal Member for Cowper
It involved 105 Australians and three New Zealanders from D Company and 6RAR. D Company were assisted by an ammunition resupply by RAAF helicopters, close fire support from New Zealand’s 161 Field Battery, artillery support from the Australian Task Force base at Nui Dat and the arrival of reinforcements as night fell. A National Commemorative Service with input from the Battle of Long Tan Commemorations Stakeholder Committee will be held in Canberra today and services will be held across the Cowper
electorate to commemorate the battle locally. Today is also an opportunity to remember and thank every single Australian who served in Vietnam over 13-year duration of the war. Our Vietnam veterans served their country with commitment and bravery. It was a difficult war politically and divisive on the domestic front. As a nation we should remember the men and women on the ground were doing their duty for their country with distinction. On the 50th anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan, it is an opportune time for everyone to learn more about Australia’s involvement in the Vietnam War and to understand the experiences of the men and women who served in defence of our values and liberties. It is also a time to reflect on what we can do to care for our veterans, many of whom still battle physical and mental health because of their war service. We must support our veterans and the organisations that support them.

is beginning to be a palpable and common theme over all our workshops so “far,What is the fun atmosphere, the supportive behaviour of all the participants
“
Piecing together real friendships PARTICIPANTS could barely contain their good-natured impatience as they listened to the all-important instructions and safety induction for the most recent workshops conducted by the Port Macquarie Women’s Shed. Over the months of May, June and July, 2016, two separate beginner workshops in creating mosaic projects were held at Bonny Hills, and the members were keen to get cracking, literally. Colours were carefully chosen from the large selection of tiles and the smashing began. “After choosing our tiles and cracking them into all shapes and sizes, we then set about carefully rearranging the pieces into whatever pattern and mix of colours we wanted”, said Julie Trowbridge, a steering committee member of the Shed. After satisfying themselves with their arrangements, each participant glued the pieces into place, before finishing up for Day 1 of the workshop. There was much concentration during this phase, which was only broken by members running their ideas past each other and admiring the development of all the other pieces of art. The projects were then left to harden before Day 2 the following week. A second similar project piece was taken home by each participant to complete to the glue drying stage as homework. Julie has enjoyed a number of the workshops
Marjorie Cooper showing off her finished mosaic projects completed at the Women’s Shed held so far, such as the pallet upcycling workshop, the knitting and crochet workshops and now, the mosaic workshops. “I really enjoyed the mosaic workshop. I had always wanted to learn how to do it. “What is beginning to be a palpable and common theme over all our workshops so far, is the fun atmosphere, the supportive behaviour of all the participants the great enjoyment being
had by all involved,” Julie added. Workshops like this, while allowing fun and useful, practical new skills to be taught and shared, also allow a great social outlet for members of the Port Macquarie Women’s Shed. Any women interested in joining the group, please go to the Facebook page, Port Macquarie Women’s Shed or contact the committee via email portmacquariewomensshed@gmail.com
Roadshow targets consumer rights THE Kempsey community will soon have the opportunity to enhance their knowledge of consumer rights and responsibilities when the NSW Fair Trading consumer roadshow ‘My Place’ comes to town in late August. Member for Oxley, Melinda Pavey said the ‘My Place’ program is Fair Trading’s opportunity to connect with communities and provide education on consumer matters. “Fair Trading’s ‘My Place’ events have proven to be highly successful in educating people of their rights while helping to raise awareness among traders about their responsibilities under the consumer protection legislation,” Ms Pavey said. Free information sessions will be running in Kempsey between August 22-25, covering a range of interesting topics. “Fair Trading will offer sessions for members of incorporated associations, home building and real estate licensees, motor dealers and repairers, private landlords and community workers,” Ms Pavey said. Ms Pavey said Fair Trading is continuing to discover new scams with creative and deceitful tactics that lure consumers in. “With sophisticated scams and fraudsters on the rise, I am pleased that potentially vulnerable consumers will be the focus for receiving important advice and tools to protect themselves from scams,” Ms Pavey said. Kempsey residents are encouraged to register their attendance prior to the event as spaces are limited. To register your attendance at one of the public sessions during the ‘My Place’ program, or to find another Fair Trading event near you, visit www.events.fairtrading.nsw.gov.au or call 13 32 20.

2016 Slim Dusty Country Music Festival:
October 17-23
Slim’s festival a growing success
“
To catch up and pick tunes with old friends can’t wait for this festival
“
Legendary entertainer Slim Dusty A YEAR after Slim Dusty had died on September 19, 2003, a simple, fun night playing some of his favourite songs has now grown into the Slim Dusty Music Festival, now into its 13th year. The movement to keep the memory of Slim’s music alive grew with Slim’s family and the Kempsey West Rotary Club becoming involved in 2005. Kempsey West Rotary Club worked to establish the Slim Dusty Foundation, which received a boost from the then deputy prime minister, Mark Vaile, during the election campaign to provide $6 million to get the Slim Dusty Centre built. After a lot more fundraising, the Slim Dusty Centre opened last November and the concert to honour his memory has now grown to a weeklong festival run by the Slim Dusty Foundation. This year’s Slim Dusty Country Music Festival will run from Monday to Sunday, October 17 to 23. The feature artists include Pete Denahy, Anne Kirkpatrick, Slim Dusty’s Travelling Country Band, David Kirkpatrick, Amos Morris, Errol Gray, Kathryn Jones, Rod Coe, Mike Kerin, Mike
Peter Denahy is one of the headline acts at this year’s festival Tyne, Jeff Mercer, Robbie Souter, Reg Poole, Brian Letton, Steve Passfield, Peter Coad and the Coad Sisters, the Gunbarrel Highwaymen, Dale Duncan, Runaway Dixie, Owen Blundell, Gary Fogarty, Ray Essery, Clelia Adams, Terry Gordon, Tony Macklin, Glen Albrecht, Justin Standley, Dianne Lindsay, Peter Simpson, Rob

is another reason - can’t wait for this festival!” The 2016 Festival will take place at the Kempsey Showground, with powered sites now sold out. However, unpowered sites are available and patrons are welcome to bring along their generators for use at the showground on the unpowered sites from 8am - 8pm. Also, there are many accommodation choices also available in the Macleay Valley. This year there are plans to include buskers in Kempsey’s CBD, while there will also be bush poets’ breakfasts at the showground and other activities such as a guided bus trip to Slim’s boyhood home at Nulla Nulla with a visit to the Bellbrook school on Wednesday, October 19. THIS month the Port Mac User Group will celebrate another milestone - its second birthday. They have helped a lot of people over this time to get the most out of their Apple products. One of the newer members is quoted as saying: “I have recently joined the group and find it very educational. I have owned apple products for years now. I started with a laptop and now have a smart phone, iPad, mini Mac and a mini iPad, which I was not taking full advantage off. “I find the group very helpful with any problems I am having or any information I need to know. It’s also a chance to meet new friends who are like minded.” The second birthday meeting will be held on Saturday, August 20, at the Port Macquarie Library in Grant Street,
6583 9088 Council backs business PORT Macquarie-Hastings Council is waiving startup fees in an outdoor dining trial in towns and villages outside Port Macquarie. The 12-month trial (until June 2017) is to encourage local restaurants and cafes in the Camden Haven, Wauchope and surrounding villages to undertake outdoor dining that will attract locals and visitors alike. Championed by the Camden Haven and Wauchope Chambers of Commerce, the outdoor dining trial aims to stimulate the local economy, support local businesses and increase street appeal in our towns and villages. The trial also aims to encourage more people to get out and about, take advantage of our beautiful climate, relax and experience new alfresco dining options. A review at the end of the trial period will consider the impact of the trial on the businesses.

New twist to 3 Rivers
Gary Henderson and Luke Morris, pictured from last year as winners of the double surf ski race. (Photo: Rob Oates’ Ballantyne Photography)
THE waterways of the Hastings make an ideal venue for the exciting and much loved ‘3 Rivers 3 Distances Challenge’ which takes place on Sunday, August 28, with a new twist for the 2016 event. To enjoy all that the three rivers – Wilson, Maria and Hastings - have to offer for all self-propelled boat craft, there are now three distances – the traditional 25km ‘Legends and Heroes’, and also now two new distances of 15km and 5km open to all non-rowing (forward facing) craft. There is something for everyone, so dust off the kayak, canoe, surf ski, paddle board or jump into a dragon boat or outrigger and be part of the fun. There are twelve different categories. Organisers, Hazel Kirby and Steve Thomas of the Port Macquarie Rowing Club emphasise that the event is not just for participants, but also for spectators as there is lots to see and do at the
finish line on Rowing Club Reserve at the end of Hibbard Drive. Entertainment will be provided by the ‘Blue Hypothesis’ big band and a variety of food and refreshments will be available. Kayaks will be available for demonstration and Scaramouche are offering face painting and Pirate Pete for kids both young and old. The event also raises funds to support TAD Disability Services. The pre-race ‘Captain’s Dinner’ is another popular aspect of the weekend when all competitors, support crew and their families can attend a welcome dinner hosted by the Port Macquarie Rowing Club at the Spinnakers Restaurant at Sails Resort from 6pm on Saturday, August 27. Priced at only $25 per head, it is a great way to start the event. Registrations are available for any level of fitness and will be received up to the day through the website at www. threeriversminimarathon.com
“She loves every minute of it,” says Zora’s mother, Michelle Boskovski. The Rep 10s play in the Northern State League and travel between Lismore, Grafton, Coffs Harbour to Port Macquarie on Sundays. Not daunted by the amount of travel, Zora says she enjoys the family time spent together in the car attending the games around the region. On Mondays, she has training at Westport High Campus hall after school and then a couple of matches. “I prefer to play Futsal because it is a faster game and won’t get cancelled because of the rain and I get to play it all year round,” explains an enthusiastic Zora. “I really like having Leo as a coach and being also being taught by Alison and Nick.”
Another recent boon to the Mid Coast Futsal club is the addition of Brazilian Coach, Leo Fischer, who is a big hit with the kids. Leo, a resident of Australia for the last few years, came from Galaxy FC on the Gold Coast to Port Macquarie and is keen to start offering regular skills academies in the coming months. Zora particularly likes how Leo has helped improve her skills in ‘first touch’ (stopping/ connecting with the ball) and ‘second touch’, where you move the ball around. Mid Coast Futsal are encouraging new ball players to come along and you can ring Alison Fazzolari on 0412 191 923 or email alison@ midcoastfutsal.com
Zora Boskovski loves Futsal
By CHRISTINA PARKIN
Zora’s already a Futsal ‘veteran’ By CHRISTINA PARKIN AS the only girl in her Futsal team, eight-yearold Zora Boskovski certainly keeps the boys on their toes. With a football (soccer) ‘die-hard’ for a father, Peter ‘Bozza’ Boskovski, it is no wonder that Zora started kicking a ball around as soon as she could walk. Playing both Futsal and soccer since the age of four, Zora became involved with Mid Coast Futsal nearly three years ago when she started to participate in the skills clinics that they offered during the school holidays. This is Zora’s first year of being part of the Reps Under 10s and the Mid Coast Futsal team.

Pass mark was a good result WOW! What a bizarre final few weeks in the NRL. It really has been a tipping nightmare. But this is what makes this sport the greatest of all. Certainty is boring. Last weekend we scratched home with a pass mark – four out of eight. By Saturday afternoon we were looking like geniuses with four out of four. We tipped Rabbitohs upsetting the Warriors and had the Titans over the Tigers. But then we hit the brakes hard. Zero from the next four. Losses by the Sharks and Cows were a big shock. With three rounds now left in the home-andaway series it is vital for tipsters to try to work out who has momentum and which of the top teams will emerge from last weekend’s defeats and be back to their best. Some tough ones again in Round 24: Broncos v Bulldogs (Thursday, August 18, 7.50pm, Suncorp Stadium): Doesn’t get any harder than this one to kick off the tipping card. Definitely an each-way bet. As Your Local Independent (and every street-corner expert) outlined, the Broncos’ problems in the second half of the season coincided with poor form from their halves. Milford and Hunt played with more confidence last weekend. They also have the vital home turf advantage. • Your Local Independent tips: Broncos Panthers v Tigers (Friday, August 19, 7.50pm, Pepper Stadium, Penrith): No easier! Comes down to hunger. The Panthers have been sound all season and sit in seventh. The Tigers have finished well to be just a point out of the eight. Missing Tedesco will hit them hard. The fact that this game is also at Penrith is crucial. • Your Local Independent tips: Panthers Knights v Titans (Saturday, August 20,
3pm, Hunter Stadium, Newcastle): Well, we went for the big upset last weekend, tipping the Knights against Penrith and ended up with egg on our faces. The Titans have momentum and the Hayne Factor, however are notorious for putting in a shocker in the games they are expected to win. However if they consider themselves finals contenders at all they must win this encounter. • Your Local Independent tips: Titans Sea Eagles v Storm (Saturday, August 20, 5.30pm, Brookvale Oval, Sydney): The Sea Eagles’ bold run at the finals faltered over the past two weekends and now are just playing for pride. Storm coach Craig Bellamy will want his players back in a winning mind-frame after falling to the Raiders last weekend. • Your Local Independent tips: Storm Cowboys v Warriors (Saturday, August 20, 7.30pm, 1300 Smiles Stadium, Townsville):
Roosters v Dragons (Sunday, August 21, 4pm, Allianz Stadium, Sydney): Another tough one. Both of these teams have brushed off ordinary and inconsistent form to post impressive wins in recent weeks. The Roosters’ win over the Cowboys was one of the big upsets last weekend, while the Dragons’ thumping of the Sharks was probably even more left-field. • Your Local Independent tips: Dragons Rabbitohs v Sharks (Monday, August 22, 7pm, ANZ Stadium, Sydney): A real problem game for the Sharks. After three rounds without a win coach Shane Flanagan will be hoping this is a ‘turnaround game’. But as the Rabbits showed last weekend against the Warriors, they can hurt anyone. However the Sharks aren’t in second place after 23 rounds on reputation alone. • Your Local Independent tips: Sharks

Dr Sagnik Sengupta
The Cowboys’ GF campaign has stalled badly with three losses on the trot to have them in fifth place, but on the same points as the sixthplaced Broncos. The Warriors are always tough physically, but the Cows will be depending on their fanatical home-ground support to erase any fears of an upset here. • Your Local Independent tips: Cowboys Raiders v Eels (Sunday, August 21, 2pm, GIO Stadium, Canberra): The Raiders are on fire! In the past two weeks they have accounted for the only two teams ahead of them on the ladder – Storm and Sharks, so there should not be an issue putting the Eels away. As YLI has stated, premierships are all about who has the momentum. Who is finishing with that consistent run, or that withering final burst. The Raiders are certainly well in the frame for 2016 glory. • Your Local Independent tips: Raiders
