Catch of the day $15million on offer for fishermen
By SUE PATERICK
RECREATIONAL fishing clubs, individual anglers and local councils are urged to apply for a share of $15 million in funding, as part of the 2016 NSW Recreational Fishing Trust projects. In the past this funding has been used for a variety of projects such as fish cleaning tables, fishing platforms, improved access, education workshops, fish stocking, fish aggregating devices, research, Fishcare Volunteers and artificial reefs; like the $1 million reef being currently placed at Port Macquarie. The NSW Recreational Fishing Trust is
funded through recreational fishing license fees. According to Member for Oxley, Melinda Pavey, the NSW Government is committed to reinvesting these fees back into the recreational fishing sector in her electorate and is calling for applications for innovative projects. “These projects are a great opportunity for fishers, clubs, and community groups to get their own fishing project afloat to enhance and improve local facilities or increase fish stocks,” Mrs Pavey said. • Continued Page 3

Big $ on offer for fishermen
Helen Byron and Michael Smith inspect the Isabella grapes during the recent harvest at the Douglas Vale Historic Homestead and Vineyard.
Vines need your love By CHRISTINA PARKIN IT’S every vigneron’s worst nightmare – wet or humid weather just as harvest is due and it was no different for Bob Mudiman last week. Bob is the vigneron (a person who cultivates grapes for winemaking) for the Douglas Vale Historic Homestead and Vineyard, located in the centre of Port Macquarie. Fearing the development of fungus, it was ‘all hands on deck’ for the volunteers, who completely harvested all the white wine grapes in one morning, before moving on to the Chambourcin and Isabella varietals on subsequent days. “The volume of grapes has been considerably affected by the wet weather and humidity,” said Rod Freund, President of the Douglas Vale Conservation Group. The grapes have now been delivered to Bago Winery where they will undergo processing under the direction of winemaker, Greg Hayward. The white wine will be available later this year, but the reds will take a few more years before being matured sufficiently. It’s been a labour of love for Bob, who has worked hard for twelve years to establish and nurture the vines and then guide the volunteers when harvest is due. Bob is the quiet achiever behind the scenes, avoiding recognition for the success of the revitalisation of the vineyard,
which began in 1998. However, all that was left of the original historic vines were three Isabella vines. “From those three original vines in 1998, we started to replant the vineyard out again, and our first nine rows are of the Isabella from the 1900s,” said Mr Freund. “It does grow very well in these humid climates so it was a very good robust grape to introduce to this area.” The vineyard now boasts additional plantings of Villard Blanc, Chambourcin and some Shiraz being nurtured in the ‘kindergarten’. The Douglas Vale Historic Homestead and Vineyard is completely run by volunteers, many of whom are retired, and is the only communityrun vineyard in Australia. Lovingly conserved and restored in consultation with the NSW Office of Environment and Heritage, the homestead and buildings now house a museum, with many original artefacts from its winemaking period. “The wine industry is an important part of the region’s history from the latter part of the 1800s until 1918 when it met its demise, due to several unfavourable conditions at the time,” explained Mr Freund. The Portabella wine made at Douglas Vale, is made as a fortified version from the popular Isabella grape, and won international awards in Bordeaux in 1882, Amsterdam in 1883 and London in 1886.
The grandsons of George Francis, the original owner of Douglas Vale from 1859, weren’t keen on continuing in their grandfather’s footsteps, but his daughter Margaret Wilson was. She became the winemaker at Douglas Vale for the last 20 years of its operations as her sons weren’t interested in continuing in their grandfather, George Francis’, footsteps. And Bob Mudiman is hoping he won’t be the last vigneron, either. His wife, Lorraine, explained that Bob needs to pass on his expertise to someone else who would be as passionate as he in caring for the vines. “It will be hard to find someone who has the same degree of interest and commitment as Bob,” said Mr Freund. “It will be a challenge to find someone to replace our present vigneron, who has readily taken on the responsibility of monitoring the grapes during their active growing season for at least two days a week, but we are hopeful there is someone local who would like to step up.” Perhaps you know someone who might be enticed to ‘get the bug’ and get involved with this unique community organisation. So if you would like to help out, contact Douglas Vale on 6584 3792 or call in on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays 10am – 3pm at 235 Oxley Highway, Port Macquarie.
• From Page 1 “The NSW Government is proud of its recreational fishing sector, which generates about $1.6 billion to the NSW economy and creates over 14,000 jobs.” President of the Hat Head Fishing Club, Matt McGrath, would love to run another Get Hooked It’s Fun to Fish program that teaches children how to fish safely, first in controlled areas and then in the creek and off the beach. The program also supplied each child with a brand new fishing rod, plus a set of fishing rules and regulations. Matt would also like funding to acquire a fish aggregating device to place offshore. Hat Head is the closest place to the Continental Shelf on the eastern seaboard and the fishing is exceptional. Peter Askew, Secretary/Treasurer for the Seabreeze Beach Hotel Fishing Club at South West Rocks, will contact Kempsey Shire Council about obtaining Trust funds to build new fish cleaning tables at Matty’s Flat, and to improve boat ramp facilities. His biggest wish would be a safer boat ramp at Jerseyville because the current one is dangerous and very slippery. He said the Matty’s Flat car park fills up in peak fishing season because no one wants to use the ramp at Jerseyville. A spokesperson for the NSW Recreational Fishing Trust explained that the Roads and Maritime Service (RMS) are responsible for boat ramps and raise funds through boat licences. “They have the technical expertise to offer advice on how to build and maintain boat ramps,” the spokesperson said. “And there are over 600 in NSW.” The Recreational Fishing Trust has been operating since 2002 and in those 13 years it has helped fund a range of projects, including new fishing platforms at Back Creek in South West Rocks, plus one at Lake Cathie and Dunbogan. The platforms have railings and accommodate wheel chairs, strollers and mobility scooters. There are 40 of these platforms in NSW, plus 140 fish cleaning tables that the Trust has funded. Projects that enhance coastlines, inland rivers, dams and lakes will be considered for funding, as will contributing funding, joint applications, in-kind support and voluntary labour. Applications close on Monday March 21. For more information visit: www.dpi.nsw. gov.au/fisheries/recreational/licnece-fee/applyfor-funds or email: recreational.fishingtrust@ dpi.nsw.gov.au

Brought to you by
IT’S official! I can safely say I should win an award for procrastination over the weekend. In fact, I think I should be crowned the Queen of Procrastination for my lack of efforts on the home front thus far in 2016. It’s not that I’m lazy, I manage to keep the dishes and laundry under control for the most part. It helps if I don’t cook too often, less dishes to wade through. Weekends I seesaw between guilt for not doing the dusting and vacuum cleaning etc, that I promised myself I would do and, to be honest, a care factor of nil! 15 years ago I was so anal about housework that I would be on the verge of a nervous breakdown if I didn’t have everything spick and span, the week’s meals prepared on a Sunday evening and the ironing basket empty, all ready for the week at work. Oh how things have changed! Last weekend I did the dishes, a couple of loads of washing, fed the animals and then packed the hubby and an overnight bag in the car and took off to our brother-inlaw’s place for a night. We had a great time and ended up staying for two nights. Late Sunday afternoon, with wine in hand and not an ounce of guilt, I remember commenting on the ignored dusting, vacuum cleaning and dirty shower…the comment? “What does it matter? I can’t see it from here and it’ll still be there tomorrow!”

A roundabout way to traffic disaster ROUNDABOUTS (RABs), the motorist’s scourge perpetrated by traffic engineers and local authorities, a ‘lazy’, cheap, but dangerous, solution to managing road traffic choke points. Port Macquarie is blessed with many, too many in fact! A case in point, is the near crisis location of the Lake/Sherwood Road RAB on the Oxley Highway, followed closely by the Bunnings/Jindalee Road RAB in the LIA (Light Industrial Area). How these locations can be deemed by the RMS/PMHC traffic experts as less of a problem than the Base Hospital (Wrights Rd) John Oxley Drive RAB, begs belief. The Base Hospital RAB is a large diameter, open, (no trees), safe sight distance benign intersection complex that seldom causes unsafe situations, even with the potential Medical
Specialist Centre and University, predicted traffic increases, (thankfully no Masters!). Whereas, the Lake/Sherwood Rd RAB with its small diameter, no safe sight distance (blocked by trees and shrubs), with a 70kmh posted speed limit to boot! is a total nightmare. Particularly, between the hours of 7.45- 9.45am and 2.45-5.30pm on any weekday. How the ‘experts’ have determined that the Base Hospital RAB justifies huge priority funding for traffic lights is typical of traffic authorities ‘getting their priorities all wrong’! The Sherwood Estate area has only Sherwood Road for access/egress. The estate has 3 retirement villages, 3 aged care facilities, many villa style complexes and an ever growing residential housing area.
You have to have a death wish when attempting to enter the Oxley Hwy from Sherwood Rd, particularly when travelling to the medical and local shopping precincts or departing for the Pacific Hwy. Entering Oxley Hwy to travel into the PM CBD is not quite so dangerous, other than the idiots, (both sexes), that attempt to drive through the RAB on Oxley Hwy at the posted 70 km/h speed limit (there are many that try!). The RMS should do themselves and us a favour and send their ‘experts’ to sit on a chair (under an umbrella if WH&S dictates), during the daily ‘Kamikaze rush hours’ and observe what the ‘real world’ of local motorists have to endure. It is time for a re-think by the NSW State and PMHC bureaucrats, as Lake Road is the ‘only’ link to
the LIA precinct, (including the B triple truck depots) and the whole of the PM southern residential areas off the Federal Pacific Hwy link. PM is already choking with traffic and the PMHC is currently continuing to increase ‘rateable’ housing areas in the south western environs with absolutely ‘no’ options or perceived planning for the upgrading of unsafe existing roads infrastructure. Forget about the permanent bandaided pot holes and inconsiderate ‘truckies’ during the day and at night on Oxley Hwy, because that’s another story! How about an ‘outer’ ring road, linking Hastings River Drive around to Ocean Drive. It has been mooted before but quietly shelved due to alleged developer pressure. Anthony Pennell Port Macquarie

You can become a ‘Hydrant Hero’
Andrew Smith from Port Macquarie has called the firies to ensure his hydrant is clearly marked.
By CHRISTINA PARKIN PEOPLE often overlook what that yellow painted area might be on their front lawn and the importance it has during a local fire. It is, of course, the cover to a domestic fire hydrant, yet it can be overgrown, or incorporated into a garden or have the family caravan parked over the top. All of these scenarios can mean wasted time for a fire services crew, and if not easily located (especially at night), they might have to move to the nearest hydrant three or more houses away with disastrous consequences. During the month of February, Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) firefighters are urging residents and businesses to find the water hydrant on the footpath and street closest
to their home or place of work, and check its condition. Fire and Rescue NSW have begun a campaign to encourage residents and business owners to become a ‘Hydrant Hero’ in your street in just three simple steps: 1. Find your closest water hydrant - identify and locate hydrants. 2. Clear around the hydrant and ensure it is clearly marked and accessible. 3. If maintenance or marking is required, report it to your local fire station, council or water authority. The FRNSW ‘Hydrant Hero’ campaign hopes to raise awareness and preparedness in the community. A social media competition in February will prompt people to become a ‘Hydrant Hero’. Send

CANBERRA CONNECTIONS With Dr David Gillespie Federal MP for Lyne
CONSTRUCTION on two major infrastructure projects in the Hastings will soon begin thanks to the Federal Government’s announcement of more than $2.5-million in funding to help get them underway. Last Friday, the Minister for Vocational Education and Skills and Cowper MP Luke Hartsuyker visited Port Macquarie’s Newman Technical College and St Columba Anglican School to announce the funding and overlook plans for the new and expanded facilities. Newman Technical College is undertaking a project for additional specialist classroom and learning areas including hospitality and will also undertake minor refurbishment of the existing hospitality training area. The total project cost is $2,978,555 with $1,575,739 coming from the Australian Government, and a further $1,402,816 from the school community. St Columba Anglican School is undertaking an $8.3-million project which will see the construction of 4 new general learning areas and one staff room. The project will also include the refurbishment of 2 existing staff areas to create 2 additional classrooms and refurbishment of the existing performing arts building. The Australian Government will provide $950,000 and the school community will contribute $7,356,250 towards the project. These two projects will not only improve the learning and teaching activities of students and teachers in the Hastings, but also provide a further boost to the local economy with jobs during the construction phase of the project. Vocational education, performing arts and enhanced learning and training opportunities for our local students are all important ingredients in delivering quality education opportunities in our region.

We have plenty of water, good land and if a farmer plants the right crop in the right place and does it well, there is no limit to what anyone can achieve
What a bloomin’ great idea By SUE PATERICK
HIDDEN among towering gum trees on his 121-hectare property just off the Crescent Head Road near Kempsey, Paul Dalley lovingly tends his flower farm to the sound of bird song. Growing mostly Australian natives, Paul and his three permanent staff are kept busy year round at Mountain Nursery - planting, growing, picking and packing the flowers they send to Japan, the USA, Melbourne and Sydney. Sixteen hectares of this secluded property are set aside for the flower farm, with five planted out with flannel flowers, Christmas bells, Christmas bush, kangaroo paw, Gymea lilies, callicarpa and proteas - a native to South Africa. In 1975 Paul moved to the Macleay Valley from Sydney for a better life for his family, and worked as a bee keeper for the Macleay Valley Nursery just down the road. As bee keeping is a seasonal occupation and expensive to establish, Paul decided to set up his own nursery. He began growing plants from seed and then started propagating bougainvillea, which he sold to supermarkets throughout NSW. Paul then branched out to cut flowers and grew gerberas, which were uncommon in Australia then. To increase his money-making potential, he soon looked into exporting cut flowers overseas and decided to try Australian natives. He started growing flowers from Western Australia, but the humid and wet summers here proved too much. “We have about six different countries here, climatically speaking,” Paul explained. “So I decided to specialise in plants endemic to Australia’s East Coast.” Christmas Bells proved difficult at first but
Relief from debt crush
LEGAL Aid NSW has congratulated the Australian Collectors and Debt Buyers Association (ACDBA) and Financial Counselling Australia for their commitment to the National Hardship Register. The National Hardship Register - which has just been launched as a permanent national initiative - stops debt collection for eligible consumers in severe financial hardship. “This initiative is a victory for people who will never be able to repay their debts,” said Julie Maron, lawyer from Legal Aid NSW and a representative on the committee overseeing the register. “Legal Aid NSW provides legal advice to thousands of people every year who are struggling to pay their debts. Our job is to assess their situation and tell them about legal options. We help them negotiate with utility providers, banks and other lenders especially when they are in severe financial hardship because of all their debts. “The National Hardship Register arose from initiatives by Legal Aid NSW and other community legal service providers and community groups. “Legal Aid NSW congratulates the 14 debt collecting agencies and the ACDBA for their commitment to the register and applauds the collaborative effort between industry and the community sector. “The register is a win/win initiative – it helps people on low income and without significant assets who are being chased for debts they cannot afford to repay.”
Farmers market booming
Paul Dalley from Mountain Nursery getting some of his beautiful flowers ready for shipment. It’s the purple berries on the unusual callicarpa plant that are sort after not its flowers. The leaves are pulled off the stem because they wilt. by the time Paul had them growing well, the demand for these pretty flowers was huge. “They were an instant hit in Japan,” Paul said. “So that started off a big industry in Eastern Australia.” Paul’s business grew from there and a coop was formed in the late 1990s with six local farmers under the name of GrandiFlora Growers. “Our company has gone on to become a wellrecognised brand in Japan,” Paul added. He has been to Japan several times and loves the contrast between old and new, plus the food is good, the people friendly, transport is efficient and it is a safe country to travel in. These days Paul has younger staff to do most of the hard work and he administers the flower shipments. “I now have more time to think and plan,” he said.
And what is his favourite flower? Australian natives, of course, because these diverse plants are part of his business and the flowers have a competitive edge throughout the world. Not one to rest on his laurels, Paul is continually experimenting, collecting plants and trying new flower crops because he wants to keep growing flowers forever. After 40 years in the Macleay Valley, Paul still loves the region’s natural beauty and its peace and quiet. He also believes the area is a perfect place for horticulture, especially growing food. “We have plenty of water, good land and if a farmer plants the right crop in the right place and does it well, there is no limit to what anyone can achieve,” Paul said. By CHRISTINA PARKIN NEXT time you are out and about and you encounter an unruly mob of ladies decked out in purple, resplendent in their red hats, you’ll be able to recognise them as the Hastings Hi Hatters. The group takes their inspiration from the poem by Jenny Joseph, which begins with ‘When I am an old woman I shall wear purple, with a red hat which doesn’t go, and doesn’t suit me…’, which forms the basis of the global movement, the Red Hat Society. “We have a lot of fun together when we meet for coffee on the first Friday of the month at the Coffee Club at Port Central and one other activity once a month,” says Hastings Hi Hatters President, Mrs Pam Jones. “There is strictly no responsibility, obligations or by-laws. “The only rule is that you must be a woman over 50 and wear a red hat (or fascinator) with a purple outfit to our functions. “You can be a pink hatter under 50 and wear a pink hat with a lavender outfit, because you haven’t quite ‘come of age’,” explained Ms Jones. If a purpose is needed, it appears that it is a haven for women to turn to the group for support after a death in the family, or having moved to a new town – the common bond is the sisterhood who make the time to ‘play up’. “Our alternative activity is chosen by whoever has a birthday that month – it might be a trip to the theatre, checking out a new restaurant, or a bus trip for the day together – it’s their choice,” explained Ms Johnson. “The main aim is to have fun, support each other and have a lovely time without the need to raise funds or do anything for anyone else – this is just for us!” If you are interested in attending the next activity, start combing the local op shops for a red hat and purple outfit and contact Pam on 6582 0510, or email pamjones50@gmail.com. The coastline, the greenery and scenery, the local fresh food, lots of activities to choose from locally, the friendly people, great choice of restaurants, great sports facilities, local theatre and the Glasshouse, 2 cinemas, easy access to the Pacific Highway, the airport, and so much more. Where do you work and what do you love about your work? I am a Latin dance instructor and my business is Salsa Footprints, teaching Salsa, Bachata, and other Latin styles and Belly Dance. I love the crowd that I dance with and the new people I’m constantly meeting. I love that my work provides me with the opportunity to keep fit in a fun way. I love that I can be creative within my work and that I can work with my husband Steve Wardrop and I am my own boss. What do you like least about your work? There’s nothing I don’t like about my work ... it’s my passion, and I’m grateful to be able to share it with others. How do you start your day? With a walk on the beaches, yoga, then answering emails, organising social events/ classes/workshop weekends, and dance practice/preparation What do you do in your spare time? I dance socially, I am training as a Bowen Therapist, cycle, read, gardening, go away on weekends to improve my dance knowledge and abilities and occasionally go on the beautiful River Hastings in our boat. What is the achievement you are most proud of? The amount of people dancing and enjoying Salsa/Latin dance in the community and the number of people attending regular classes and social events. I have almost finished my Bowen Therapy training, and the vegetable garden I am nurturing.

More help for working couples MORE Out of School Hours Care Places: More local families now have access to before and after school services with the completion of the first phase of the NSW Government’s $20 million Out of School Hours Care (OSHC) grant program. We understand working parents need flexibility and that is why we have now expanded the grant program and opened it up to more schools. This will provide more places for our kids and enable our local school communities to better meet this growing demand. Applications will be accepted from schools for new services, schools wanting to expand existing Out of School Hours Care services and local councils in partnership with schools. Grants of up to $30,000 are available to help with the cost of establishing or extending existing OSHC services. The grants can be used for fitouts, tendering or equipment costs by schools with new or existing OSHC services. The NSW Government understands that families need early childhood education care options. We encourage parents who need before and after school places to get in touch with their schools. STATE MATTERS
I WAS in a restaurant – a building that used to be in the place where I worked – and I was telling my companions all about the building when somebody suddenly switched the topic to butchers. That happens to me a lot. The man telling the butcher story explained that some butchers had a habit of saying the important things backwards. I didn’t say anything, because my knowledge of such subjects was extremely limited. But another companion felt he had to have his say. “That can’t be true,” he said. I also had my doubts, but I vowed I would look it up when I returned home. I am sure you are yet to be convinced, but it was true, at least of some butchers anyway. I don’t know if spelling backwards was an apprenticeship subject and I don’t suggest you start talking backwards to your neighbourhood butcher, because he might think you need some form of correction therapy, but butchers were singled out for mention in all the checking I did. For instance, one site said ‘blokes in bloody aprons’. Most sites came straight out and said butchers. The trend started a long time ago, apparently as a way to avoid the serious antics of authorities. Smithfield markets in London were mentioned several times. Some say ‘backward speaking’ was used by

Regional Woman of the Year Award. From a field of close to 250 nominees across all categories, Karol’s dedication to working with people with a disability for over 15 years has seen her join three other finalists for the Rex Airlines Regional Woman of the Year. Starting as a volunteer in disability support, Karol has since set up several innovative businesses to support work for the intellectually disabled, including a second-hand clothing shop, a recycling business and a recycling building materials business. These businesses have helped support employment in our community. I urge everyone in the local community to get behind Karol and the other amazing women in the other categories and to cast their vote. Online voting ends Sunday February 28. The winners will be announced at a ceremony in NSW Parliament House on March 9. For more information on the 2016 NSW Women of the Year awards and to cast your vote, visit www. women.nsw.gov.au.
Bridge half way there MINISTER for Roads Duncan Gay and Member for Port Macquarie Leslie Williams have announced work on the new Stingray Creek Bridge is nearly 50 per cent complete with the new structure to provide a wider, safer crossing for road users and pedestrians. Minister Gay said the NSW Government has invested $16.4 million towards the $26 million bridge replacement project, which is progressing at a cracking pace. “It was only in November last year that we celebrated the start of major work and now a few months later here we are just about at the half way mark,” Minister Gay said. “The new 190 metre bridge, which will be wider, runs through the heart of the local area and is critical for connecting the communities of North Haven, Laurieton, West Haven and Lakewood. “The community can already see visible progress being made but over the next few months work will really ramp up with bridge pylons going into the river and 49 large girders being lifted into place to form the bridge base. “The new bridge will also remove the load limit restriction which will improve local freight outcomes.” Mrs Williams said the new bridge would deliver significant benefits to Port Macquarie and surrounding areas now and for years to come. “The old Stingray Creek Bridge was built more than 50 years ago and with more than 8,000 vehicles using the bridge every day this upgrade is crucial.”

butchers to speak to each other about the quality of the meat without offending customers. It was also used to make comments about customers. Then it expanded to subjects less serious, such as when a good-looking girl entered the shop. Some words used were spoken in code, rather than backwards, but I couldn’t find many words that I could use here without upsetting somebody. They even made a film on the subject a few years ago. It was an Australian film called ‘The Hard Word’, starring Guy Pearce and Rachel Griffiths. Garry Maddox, film writer, described it as ‘shining a new light on a little-known aspect of Sydney’s retailing life’. Backwards talk was referred to as rehctub klat or sometimes rechtub klat. Some sites referred to this slang as a precursor to cockney slang. I saw several examples on the website but, considering the sensitivity of this paper’s editor, I

can’t use any of them, except perhaps beef which could be pronounced as feeb. Another site said the expression tluciffid namow meant ‘difficult woman’. But I have to conclude that my companion who said ‘that can’t be right’ was wrong. If you try out some rude words on your local butcher and you get a blank stare in return, don’t blame me. Incidentally, did you know that the literal sense of the word ‘butcher’, in the words of my big dictionary, is something like ‘dealer in goat’s flesh’? The word ‘butcher’ has many meanings, including murderer, a vendor of sweets in a train or theatre, a fourpenny glass of beer (mine must be an old dictionary), a shade of dark blue, a bird, a shrub and other uses, including a look (‘take a butcher’s at this’). In March 1934 the Bulletin, commenting on Sydney, said ‘a butcher is identical in volume with the fourpenny glass of the other capitals’. I have no idea what that meant. It might be fun, if you are a butcher, calling out at the top of your voice, in slang, that you are dealing with a difficult customer. The customer might just happen to be another butcher. lauriebarber.com; lbword@midcoast.com.au

It’s so cool working with the younger students and seeing how proud they are of their achievement of building a robot
By CHRISTINA PARKIN
IT’S a sign of the future and students from Camden Haven High are right into it! “I love it – there is always something new to learn and explore and the competitions really help us to do that,” says fourteen year old Tiana Moore from Year 9. Tiana has been using Lego ‘Mindstorms’ robotics since Year 6 in Primary School, and is finding the programming a lot easier now with the experience she has had with building the player bots they use for the Robocup Soccerbot squad. Last year the two Camden Haven squads were the only five girls among 70 competitors and came third in NSW and ninth in Australia. They will compete again in August, but not before staging an exhibition game as a display school at the National Future Schools Expo on March 3-4 in Sydney. Now in their sixth year, the award winning team is in preparation for their biggest challenge yet – The FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC). The FRC is an international robotics competition for 14-18-year- olds and is only in its second year of competition in Australia. There are 60 teams from around the globe entered and they will be converging on Sydney from March 16-19 for the ‘Australian Regional’ at Sydney Olympic Park for the right to compete at the World Championship. The game is always played on an 8 x 16m
field (try controlling a 50kg robot from 50 feet away!) and is played by ‘alliances’ of three teams each. Robots work together to score points, play defence, and fend off other teams – all observed by people watching feats of engineering with the same gusto and excitement as they would sports matches. Most games are also designed to be similar to popular sports – the 2013 game, Ultimate Ascent, involved throwing frisbees into goals, the 2012 game, Rebound Rumble, involved shooting basketballs into hoops. The 2010 game, Breakaway, involved kicking footballs – no game is repeated. Camden Haven High School will enter a ‘rookie’ squad of two teams of three, after sponsorship for the $8000 entry fee from Google via the ‘Robots in the Outback’ program and a grant from the Argosy Foundation in the USA. The students have been building their Megabot since the start of the school year and will have the opportunity to ‘train’ during a public robotics expo to be held at North Haven at the Camden Haven Surf Club on Saturday February 20 from 10am-3pm at North Haven Surf Club. Beth Legge, another 14-year old from Year 8, is a relative newcomer to the activity but is part of the ‘driving’ team who control the 40kg Megabot through a series of obstacles with a joystick. Beth has found the robotics has helped her to learn teamwork and problem solving. “It’s important to get younger students interested in science and maths – robotics opens

Emotional intelligence is key to happy life
IN schools there has been a strong move over the past decade to improve children’s and adults’ understanding of the importance of Social and Emotional Wellbeing (SEWB). Instead of telling someone who is struggling with schoolwork or sport to ‘just suck it in and get on with it’ there is now an understanding that people are vulnerable in all sorts of ways that need to be acknowledged. Australia’s early national mental health reform program which began in the early 90s was renowned for its broad coverage. But that momentum decreased in the last decade, so it is hoped that the Federal Government’s new program announced just before Christmas 2015 will lead to further progressive steps at the local level. The Primary Health Network (the older GPs’ Network or Medicare Local) will roll out regional commissioning of new approaches later this year and that will mean more jobs coming in the community mental health area. SkillsLink already has a strong involvement in this field and we invite you to come in and hear about the progressive steps we are taking to help people living with mental distress to reengage with community and begin new paths in their recovery. There are courses you can undertake to start building your skills in the mental health support field, and also opportunities to volunteer to help others in recovery. We work closely with our friends at Endeavour Mental Health Recovery Clubhouse in Hamilton Green, and there are lots of ways you can join the shared work in different community settings. Please gives us a call to find out more, or come and visit us at SkillsLink Training, 77 Hastings River Drive. Ring 02 6583 7288 or visit our website on www.skillslinktraining.com.au to check out the full range of opportunities.

Students join reconciliation
By CHRISTINA PARKIN
STUDENTS from Tacking Point Public School, Hastings Primary School and Hastings Secondary College – Port Macquarie Campus will be proud that their contribution to the New South Wales Reconciliation Council’s Schools 2015 Reconciliation Challenge – ‘Homegrown Heroes’ Exhibition is now on display at the Dunghutti-Ngaku Aboriginal Art Gallery at South Kempsey. Dunghutti-Ngaku Aboriginal Art Gallery Coordinator, Jann Kesby remarked that young people really do have some insightful things to say about reconciliation, expressed in creative and clever ways. “I invite anyone to come and view the works, explore what the images ‘say’ to them and then read the inscription to see the interpretation presented by the artist group,” says Ms Kesby. “It’s a really interesting process and great for school groups to come in and learn from the works.” The NSW Schools Reconciliation Challenge is an annual state-wide art competition for young people in Years 5-9, Indigenous and non-Indigenous, of all artistic abilities. Each year the challenge has a different theme, providing a framework that offers students different perspectives on reconciliation. The competition theme for 2015 was ‘Homegrown Heroes’ and students were invited to consider what constitutes a ‘hero’ and to learn about some of the heroes of the reconciliation movement. The competition received hundreds of entries, from across NSW, including the mid north coast region. The exhibition will remain open until Sunday, March 6. The exhibition was opened last Friday by the NSW Minister for Aboriginal Affairs and Member for Port Macquarie, Mrs Leslie Williams. The opening was also attended by the Member for Oxley, Ms Melinda Pavey and the Kempsey Shire Council Mayor, Ms Liz Campbell, NSW Reconciliation Council Dunghutti and other community members and school students from St Joseph’s Primary School with teacher, Alfie Drew. Entries are now open for schools to participate in the 2016 Reconciliation Challenge competition entitled ‘Always Was, Always Will Be’ and an e-kit can be downloaded from the website at www.nswreconciliation.org.au/schoolsreconciliation-challenge

Drawing on nature
Gillian Scott with two of her paintings, which had been on exhibition at the Sunset Gallery in Murray Street, Port Macquarie
By CHRISTINA PARKIN
DO you love nature and drawing, have good eyesight, steady hands, patience and willing to learn a new style of drawing and painting? Perhaps a course in botanical art is just what you need and one is being led by renowned botanical artists Gillian Scott, Margaret Pople and Jan Carson at the SkillsLink College in Hastings River Drive. Botanical art as we now know it, dates from the Middle Ages, where it was used primarily to illustrate herbals and religious books. It is a form of art work that allows people to make detailed portraits of their favourite plants. It is particularly popular with those who like realistic
art, an alternative to landscapes and abstracts. Botanical painting is nearly always done using watercolours although some modern artists have used acrylic inks. Both these media allow the white of the underlying paper to enhance the transparency of many flower colours. It is not necessary for students to be familiar with watercolour techniques as the course is designed for all standards from beginners onwards. The whole course (which takes a year to complete) has been written up as a book which students buy to work from throughout the year, both at home and in class with their tutors. Since 1980, Gillian has taken part in nearly thirty exhibitions in Australia and overseas,
a third of them solo shows, as well as creating many commissioned paintings. She has also been invited to judge the art section of various shows in southern Queensland and the Botanical Art Society of Australia. This year Gillian will have the help of two other local botanical artists, Margaret Pople and Jan Carson, as tutors. They have their own particular skills, which will add to the techniques on offer. There is a maximum of 10 places in the class, so anyone interested in joining the course is asked to contact Gillian by email at Gillians2@ iprimus.com.au so do not delay if you wish to participate.
SEVERAL workers around Port Macquarie have been reimbursed almost $24,000 after the Fair Work Ombudsman found they had been underpaid. The largest recovery was almost $10,000 for six workers at Wauchope. The workers were underpaid their minimum hourly rate, industry-based allowances and other entitlements. Fair Work inspectors discovered the underpayments during a random audit. The business operator set pay rates to compete with other businesses in the area, rather than checking the minimum legal entitlements. In another matter, seven employees at another local company were back-paid $6300 after being underpaid minimum hourly rates and overtime rates. And three workers at a fast food outlet were back-paid $7500 after being underpaid their minimum hourly rates, weekend penalty rates and casual loadings. Fair Work Ombudsman Natalie James says the cases highlight the importance of local employers understanding the minimum lawful pay rates applicable to their workplace. “It was pleasing that these employers all agreed to rectify the underpayments after being contacted by Fair Work inspectors,” Ms James said. “When we find errors our preference is to educate employers about their obligations and assist them to put processes in place to ensure the mistakes are not repeated.” Employers who have any uncertainty about whether their workplace practices are appropriate can visit www.fairwork.gov.au or phone the Fair Work Infoline on 13 13 94 for advice. An interpreter service is available on 13 14 50. Small businesses can opt to be put through to a small business helpline.

Screening saves lives LIKE it, or lump it, the breast screening program for detecting breast cancer is one of the most effective ways to detect breast cancer, particularly in the early stages when it is small and easier to treat. Screening involves taking an x-ray (mammogram) of each breast. Some women find it uncomfortable because the screening machine presses on the breasts, but it only takes a few seconds. You can have breast cancer for years before you or your doctor notice that something is wrong – by which time it could be well-developed. A breast screen won’t stop you from getting breast cancer, but it can give you a better chance of successful treatment. Current treatments mean there is a 90% chance of surviving at least five years. Women aged 50 and older are encouraged to have a mammogram every two years to screen for breast cancer. If you want to stop screening mammograms after the age of 75, discuss it with your doctor. Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women, with one out of every 11 women in NSW affected at some stage in their life. The biggest risk factors for breast cancer are being a woman, and being over 50. The screening program for breast cancer in NSW is run by BreastScreen NSW, part of BreastScreen Australia. It’s jointly funded by the commonwealth and NSW governments. BreastScreen NSW promotes free two-yearly breast screening to women aged from 50 to 74,
the group that benefits most from screening. Women from 40 to 49, and women 75 and over can also have a free breast screen if they want it. If you are aged between 40-44, the harms of screening may outweigh the benefits – speak to your doctor about your individual circumstances. It’s not available to women under 40, the group with the lowest risk. BreastScreen NSW runs screening and assessment services at more than 190 fixed and mobile locations. To make an appointment at your nearest BreastScreen NSW centre, phone 13 20 50. All mammograms are examined by two specially trained doctors. If a mammogram shows something suspicious, BreastScreen NSW
makes sure you have follow-up tests and care. Even breast screening can miss cancers – so get to know your breasts and find out what is normal for you. That way you’ll be able to spot changes. Whatever your age, have your breasts examined by your doctor or women’s health nurse every year. If you have problems – such as a lump, pain or bloodstained fluid coming from the nipple, see your doctor immediately. For more information about BreastScreen NSW, visit the website at www.breastscreen. nsw.gov.au; or email info@bsnsw.org.au or call the Cancer Council on 13 11 20 and speak to a specialist cancer professional.

SIX months into smoke-free outdoor dining in NSW and NSW Health has reported public support and levels of compliance are high. Since the start of the ban on July 6, 2015, NSW Health Inspectors have inspected over 1880 hospitality businesses with outdoor dining areas and have found 98 per cent compliance across NSW. Executive Director of the NSW Centre for Population Health, Dr Jo Mitchell, said high levels of compliance with the ban has meant fewer people were exposed to harmful secondhand smoke. “There is no safe level of exposure to secondhand smoke. Commercial outdoor dining areas were made smoke-free to prevent patrons who are dining from exposure to cigarette smoke,” Dr

Mitchell said. An effective NSW Health education campaign leading up to July 6, 2015, resulted in high community awareness of the ban on smoking in commercial outdoor dining areas. “Our figures indicate that more than eight out of ten people, both smokers and non-smokers, support the ban,” Dr Mitchell said. “Experience shows that once people are aware of a smoking ban, they generally do the right thing. We have seen many venues and patrons embrace smoke-free dining.” NSW Health Inspectors have found smoking breaches in a small number of venues. These venues were provided with education and have been followed up to confirm they are now compliant.

Dementia statistics a reason for concern IN the Port Macquarie state electorate there is estimated to be 1,750 people living with dementia, which is expected to increase to an estimated 1,950 people by 2020, doubling by 2050 if a cure is not found. The state electoral divisions of Tweed, Myall Lakes, Port Macquarie, Bega and Oxley remain in the top five in terms of dementia prevalence estimates. The peak body representing people with the fatal disease says you can live well with it, with the right support. Alzheimer’s Australia NSW CEO, John Watkins said dementia does not discriminate and will impact every community across NSW. “Dementia is the second leading cause of death in Australia, after heart disease, and there is no cure,” Mr Watkins said. But, Mr Watkins said, while the figures are alarming, there is hope for those living with dementia. “Dementia can be a very isolating, confusing, confronting and difficult disease to live with,” he said. “There is also the new website Living Well with Dementia, developed by our colleagues at Alzheimer’s Australia Vic, that contains a whole range of information and tips on how to live well with dementia, and includes personal stories from people who are dealing with it right now. “But you are not alone. There is a whole range of help available and, with the right support, you can live well with dementia. “A great starting point is calling Alzheimer’s Australia NSW on the National Dementia Helpline on 1800 100 500 during business hours, Monday - Friday.” Alternatively, call in to the Alzheimer’s Australia NSW Dementia and Memory Community Centre, 121 Bridge Street, Port Macquarie.

March on melanoma A cure for this cancer is in the “sights of researchers. Local residents are urged to make a difference as Australia unites to march for a cure! WITH the highest rates in the world, and one Australian dying every six hours, melanoma is referred to as ‘Australia’s National Cancer’. There are over 11,500 new cases diagnosed each year and melanoma kills more young Australians (15-39 year-olds) than any other single cancer. But there’s hope. Recent melanoma research has tripled the life expectancy for advanced melanoma patients. A cure for this cancer is in the sights of researchers. Local residents are urged to make a difference as Australia unites to march for a cure! Mark your diaries as the fifth annual ‘Melanoma March’ is set to arrive in Bonny Hills on Sunday, March 20, from 8am to register for the 9.30am start at the Reserve at Rainbow Beach, Bonny Hills, continuing along the seaside for 1.5km north before turning to return to the reserve for post-walk entertainment and refreshments. Organised to be an exciting day for the whole family, participants can walk, stroll or run their way along the route – there’s even a prize for the most ‘sunsmart’ outfit. Organised by not-for-profit organisation Melanoma Institute Australia (MIA), in
No need to chill eggs YOU may have noticed a difference among various retailers on how eggs are displayed at the point of sale. Recent media reports also claimed that supermarkets are the ‘missing link’ in eggrelated Salmonella protection. However, the Food Standards of Australia and New Zealand (FSANZ) have responded recently by claiming that there is NO food safety reason to require whole eggs to be refrigerated at retail. However retailers may choose to refrigerate eggs for their own reasons (for example, to maintain quality of the egg such as firmness of the yolk or reduce spoilage). FSANZ explained that they undertook thorough risk assessment of egg production and processing in Australia in 2011. An egg’s shell, membrane and the egg white all form a barrier designed to stop food poisoning bacteria from contaminating the inside of an egg.

partnership with Cancer Institute NSW, the 2016 ‘Melanoma March’ officially launched in Sydney on February 2, and aims to raise significant research dollars from all 24 marches, nationally. The annual ‘Melanoma March’ event is the main fundraiser for MIA. The monies raised from the 2016 marches will fund the world-class ‘Big Data for Melanoma’ project that aims to transform the way patients are treated. The project will work to link participating melanoma centres across Australia and analyse how melanoma is treated, ultimately providing key insights to reduce deaths from this most dangerous form of skin cancer. ‘Melanoma March’ Bonny Hills host, Paula Jackson, has been a patient at MIA for the past seven years and is a Stage 4 survivor. “I have been involved with the Melanoma March for the past three years and will continue again next year as I know that awareness and research are key in the fight against melanoma,” says Paula Jackson. Wee dram of Scottish fun By LIZZIE McLEOD
STILL wondering what a Scotsman wears under his kilt? Or what haggis tastes like? Well at least one of those questions will be answered when Robbie Burns’ 256th birthday will be celebrated at The Rotary Community Hall, Port Macquarie, on February 27. Robbie Burns was and is to this day Scotland’s favourite son. He was born on January 25, 1759, and came to prominence as a poet and lyricist. His birthday is still celebrated all over the world. His most famous contribution - ‘Auld Lang Syne’ - is still sung at the end of many functions, bringing people together. His work ‘Scots Wha Hae’ also served for a long time as the unofficial national anthem of Scotland. David Meidling, who is organising this year’s local Robbie Burns Supper says it’s a night that includes sword dances, Burns’ poems, Scottish dancing, and Scottish food. “Really it’s a night where people can get their tartans and skirts out and embrace their Scottish heritage. It’s always a really good time.” The celebration will include everything Scottish. ‘The Address to the Haggis’ will be
delivered by David Robertson. Scottish food including cock-a-leekie soup, haggis and neeps with a wee dram of malt for those who enjoy their whiskey, roast beef wi’ a’ the trimmings, and tipsy laird trifle. Coffee and shortbread will round out the bill o’ fare. “What normally happens is all the Scottish people get together and have a celebration including poetry, bag piping, and drumming,” said Rod Simpkins, also an organiser of the Robbie Burns’ celebration. “Anybody can come along. It is really traditional. People whose backgrounds are not Scottish will just enjoy it because it is a lot of good fun and there are people running around in kilts and drummers playing. “We celebrate Robbie Burns because he will and always will be Scotland’s leading poet.” The event will raise money for a defibrillator to put in a taxi rank in Port Macquarie. Ladies can wear after-five-wear with a token of tartan and men can are encouraged to wear a lounge suit or highland dress. Tickets are just $55 and include a four-course meal. Reservations are essential. contact Rod Simpkins on 0407783450 or David Meidling on 0411 226911.

Get ready for ABBA
By LIZZIE McLEOD GET ready for the ABBA experience. Yes, the hit show ‘Dancing Queen: The 40th Anniversary Tour’ will be in Port Macquarie next weekend (February 27). What has arguably been ABBA’s most popular song; ‘Dancing Queen’ was released in 1976 and is just as popular today. Rolling Stone magazine listed the track as one of the greatest songs of all time and a big chunk of Port Macquarie will definitely be singing along. “Dancing queen without a doubt is the song that get’s everyone participating and up and dancing,” says Hayley Maybury, who plays ABBA member Agnetha Faltskog. “Everyone knows all the words and the entire dance moves. It’s so much fun when the opening lines of the song start and everyone’s eyes light up and they’re like ‘Oh I know what this song is. I love this song.” Hayley says the night is all about dancing to great music and having a good time. “There will be all those songs you can’t help yourself with at least tapping your foot on the floor or mouthing the words and singing along,” she says. “There is one song where we go down into the audience and people sing along into the microphone to the chorus of the song and we get people up onto the stage as well with some costumes on. I love it so much.” The show includes all the uniquely ABBA choreography. “We have tried rather than creating a new show, to stay as true to the original ABBA as we possibly can,” says Hayley. “All of the harmonies, the accents, the costumes, the choreography…we’ve tried to be as authentic as we possibly can and have spent a lot of time working on that.” Every girl and boy, woman and man has their favourite ABBA song. Luckily, the show boasts all of these. “I have two favourites. One is ‘The Winner Takes it All’, because that’s the one my character gets to sing and it’s just the most beautiful song to sing. It gives me such joy. The other one is ‘Why Did it Have to Be Me’, which is a song that I didn’t actually know before I started rehearsals. “It is the most fun song I have ever heard. You literally cannot listen to it without bumping up and down on your seat and getting up and dancing. It is so much fun.” ABBA has not only given so much to the people who grew up through the band’s era, but continues to find new fans decades later. “ABBA has been a massive part of my growing up and musical education,” says Hayley. “I’ve listened to ABBA since I was a little girl and listened to them on tape. And then when ‘MAMMA MIA’ the movie came out, that was really one of my big inspirations to go into
The cast of ‘Dancing Queen: The 40th Anniversary Tour’ will revive your favourite ABBA memories musical theatre. That was a real trigger for me. Agnetha is such a fascinating person as well to research.” Hayley says the ‘Dancing Queen: The 40th Anniversary Tour’ show embraces the true ABBA experience and is a real ABBA tribute. “It’s a show that absolutely everybody can enjoy. ABBA’s music is universal. Everybody knows it; everybody loves it. You will have a good time if you come, without a doubt.” So put on the platform shoes, raise that disco ball and head into town for the ultimate ABBA experience. The two-hour long show will take place at The Glasshouse Port Macquarie on Saturday February 27 from 8pm. Tickets are $59.90 for adults and $49.90 for concession and children. For more information visit www.glasshouse. org.au or call (02) 6581 8888.
Lennon’s Circus now at Kempsey FEW can deny the excitement and fun of a circus, and it is Kempsey’s turn to experience all the delights that Lennon Brothers Circus will provide during their visit after a successful run in Port Macquarie. “It’s a traditional circus and it seems that is what many families want,” says Jay Lennon, who is one of the fifth generation to be born into the circus life since Lennon Brothers started in 1893, although there are seventh generation members as well. Jay’s role is as site manager and teaching the flying trapeze and new acts. It’s a long haul ahead for the troupe as they wind their caravans up to Cairns by the end of the year, before they have a month off. After Kempsey, Grafton and Lismore will be the last NSW sites before Brisbane. They have a family from Chile and one from Morocco who have just returned from spending five years in Japan, performing with their 10 dogs. There is a mixture of animals that are part of the Lennon Brothers family – lions, miniature donkeys, ponies, monkeys, alpacas and camels. It is this component that often brings controversial comment about the role of animals in circuses. “We occasionally get activists, and they are entitled to their own opinion”, says Jay, “but what we find is that they rarely come and actually see the conditions the animals live in and how well treated they are during their training and the shows. “The animals are part of our family, and treated respectfully to the point that our children grow up with them in the same way as other families have various pets.”

Arm injury was the break Bre’Arna ‘needed’ By CHRISTINA PARKIN BREAKING your arm prior to a major Futsal selection trial would not be regarded as good fortune. However, for 15-year-old Camden Haven High School Year 11 student, Bre’Arna Hoole, it was lucky she had. Missing out on selection for the Under 15s team for the National Futsal Championship late last year was an initial blow, but it was during the National Club Futsal Championships, that Bre’Arna led her Taree club to victory by scoring the winning goal against Queensland. A few days later, Bre’Arna was notified that she had been selected with her club teammate, Rachelle, to play in the open women’s Australian Futsal team, which will be travelling to Taiwan later this year. “I was not sure about feeling excited at first,” said Bre’Arna. “I have to raise $6000, and although I have raised $2,000 so far, my friend Rachelle is not sure she can raise enough
money either. “Although I have been on a plane, I’ve never been overseas. “It will be a good experience and a once in a lifetime opportunity.” Bre’Arna has plans for further lamington and pie drives and seafood raffles, and she is appreciative of the support from family and community members from Harrington, who have gotten behind her goal to represent her country. “I really like the game because it is really fast moving and involves a lot of skill, but I prefer playing in the women’s team because you can play a little more aggressively,” said Bre’Arna. Playing since Year 7 and with four younger brothers, Bre’Arna is a great role model for them. Her 13-year-old brother Jacob, has been playing in the national team for four years and although they all play Futsal, three also play soccer and one plays NRL. That’s a lot of washing for Bre’Arna’s mother! If Bre’Arna’s hard work towards her
fundraising goals is achieved, she would like to take her proud Mum and Grandma along as her two supporters and to accompany her while doing some sightseeing and attending various cultural activities. Meanwhile, Bre’Arna has a busy study schedule during Year 11 - working at KFC, fitness training Monday, NRL training with the boys on Wednesday and two games of Futsal Thursday night for two different teams – and she might go for a run in the mornings. “Sometimes on a Friday I feel exhausted,” remarked the energetic Bre’Arna. Camden Haven High teacher, Pascale Sturtzenegger, said: “Bre’Arna should be congratulated for her achievements. Her reliability and team spirit has not gone unnoticed. “We wish her all the very best for raising the remaining funds which will provide her with the once in a life time experience of travelling to Taiwan to represent Australia and to build lifelong friendships”.
Bre’Arna Hoole looks forward to representing Australia in Taiwan later this year
Tyler at top of his game By CHRISTINA PARKIN FIFTEEN-YEAR-OLD level three referee, Tyler Hampton, is keen to be part of the action for the Junior State Touch Competition and by being allocated 10 games for the first two days, he’ll have plenty of running to do. With 357 junior touch football teams descending on Port Macquarie tomorrow (Friday), bringing around 12,000 competitors and spectators to the Hastings, the weekend is shaping up to be a fine one ready for the world’s largest weekend touch football competition. “Referees play an integral role in the competition, clocking-on by 7am and often leaving after 6pm,” said Luke Heckendorf, NSW Touch Football Membership Services Coordinator, who is a Level 6 referee. “It’s a 10-hour, six- seven games a day effort, so there is in excess of 400 referees required for the competition as three are used and rotated per game. “The referees have to be quite fit as they don’t get to substitute during the game like the players can.” Each team competing has to supply one referee per team plus one extra, so while Port Macquarie is fielding only 10 teams, they are also donating the services of 3 referees to the Berkeley Vale Club, making 14 participating referees. “The speed of the game is phenomenal, and when it gets hot and steamy, conditions can be really testing,” says local Port Macquarie Referees Director, Greg Oaten. “Tyler Hampton at 15, is our youngest and most qualified referee with a level three qualification, which he gained at the NSW Touch Association State Cup last December.

Up and coming level three referee, Tyler Hampton will be busy this weekend at the Junior State Touch Competition
“Tyler has improved out of sight this year – he is now the number two in Port. He really is a fantastic young man.” While some referees do still play the game, most confine their efforts to refereeing only. Tyler’s older sister, Djanaya (19) and his
mum have played touch football for a number of years, so Tyler has ‘grown up on the sidelines, knowing the rules from early on’, according to his mum, Pru. “I like learning the rules and being in control, and although I used to do both, being a referee is
easier,” remarked Tyler. “I want to go as high as I can with refereeing.” Tyler is a busy young man in Year 10 at school and also works part-time in a bakery, yet he still finds the time to play and referee for Oztag as well as touch football. Last year Tyler, his sister and mother all played Oztag in the same team. Studying law and aviation is on Tyler’s list for his future, but he also plans to study cookery in his gap year so he can work part-time while attending university. Port Macquarie Touch Association has five referees 16 years and under participating this weekend, and when asked how they will go with disputes, Greg Oaten replied that: “Controversy is character building and they learn an enormous amount from handling difficult situations.” “I teach them to quote back Rule 18 – ‘the referee is the sole judge on the field’. You have to learn to be firm but fair and manage the game so it is enjoyable for all the players. “If you can handle both your peers and older players, you can handle anything. “I’m proud of Tyler, but I do not like that he has to put up with a lot of abuse at times,” remarked Tyler’s mother, Pru. “Referees can make mistakes just like players and clubs do try to do what they can to support the referees with a zero tolerance policy.” “I have to enforce the rules, but I also to have to leave it on the field and not worry about it later,” said Tyler. “Usually, other players will speak up in support of the referee, which is good. “After all, I’m also there for my health and fitness, to make good friendships and for my advancement as a referee.”
