Make a difference!

YOU can make a difference in the lives of people who ‘fall through the cracks’.

Port Macquarie teacher Erin Denham is the founder of Make a Difference.

The initiative began four-years-ago, within Mackillop College, with the aim to look after underprivileged people.

It has now been rebranded as a not-forprofit community organisation and now sits independently of the school, Erin says.

“We always said we would look at a community project and we have decided to support Orange Sky Laundry and bring a van here to service the homeless community from Forster to Kempsey.”

Orange Sky Laundry is the initiative of the 2016 Young Australians, Nic Marchesi and Lucas Patchett.

In September of 2014 the best mates built a free mobile laundry in their old van to help the homeless.

This world first idea has expanded to 11 vans in Brisbane, Melbourne, South East Victoria, Sydney and the Gold Coast, and two shower vans.

Make a Difference has been in communication with Nic and Lucas for six months and is now raising funds to bring the free clothes-washing and -drying service for homeless people, to the Mid North Coast.

Mackillop teacher Erin had her eyes opened to homelessness when she participated in a Christian outreach program with her previous employer.

You can make a difference

Steve Posselt told his story of paddling 12,000km to raise awareness of the global climate emergency to a keen group in Port Macquarie last Friday

By NIKALA SIM THE message of a world in trouble was brought to Port Macquarie last week by a man who has paddled 12,000km to raise awareness of climate change.

Former Port Macquarie resident Steve Posselt is on the last leg of his ‘Connecting Climate Chaos’ journey that has taken him around the world.

The civil engineer says he first became aware of how dire the global position had become when he heard a talk by retired climate scientist and author Barry Pittock in 2005.

The former head of CSIRO Climate Impact Group is one of the world’s leading authorities on climate change.

“I was president of the Australian Water Association in Queensland and had heard a bit about climate change,” Steve says.

“So, I organised a seminar and what I learnt there scared the living daylights out of me.

“Barry Pittock is as boring as buggery when you read his stuff but if you hear what he says – it’s scary, scary, scary.

“That’s when I thought ‘geez I got to do something here’ and I decided to go from Brisbane to Adelaide.”

The Ballina resident says it wasn’t ‘real smart’ to begin his journey during the drought of 2007.

“You look at 2015 and I paddled up the Mississippi in a flood - so there’s a bit of a pattern there,” Steve says.

His ‘Connecting Climate Chaos’ campaign commenced at the Gulf of New Mexico and took in New Orleans and Chicago before he headed to Canada, England and France for the COP-21 Climate Summit in Paris in November, 2015.

On New Year’s Day 2017 Steve brought out his kayak ‘Old Yella’ for the last time.

He stopped in at his former home of Port Macquarie to gather signatures for a petition that will be presented to Parliament in Canberra.

“The welcome was great – it was terrific,” Steve says of the group that welcomed him to the Hastings.

“I’m actually a Grafton boy but part of my life was in Port Macquarie.

“I finished school here but there was a major defect with the high school in that I could see the surf at Town Beach.

“I’d be doing English poetry last period and it really is surprising I passed because I would be picking where I was going to surf and I really wasn’t listening to the lesson.”

Steve left Port Macquarie at the age of 18 to

pursue a career in civil engineering and has spent most his life in Brisbane.

It was there that his ‘Connecting Climate Chaos’ journey began, at Engineering House in the Brisbane suburb of Spring Hill.

“It is engineers who will solve this problem “We have more than half of the engineers on board and all we need is the government to tell them to get on with it.

“We’ve had the technology forever – now we just need the will.

“I tell people if you want to stop something all you got to do is put your foot down – the community can stop anything.

“Even if everything promised at Paris is delivered, the planet will likely see global warming exceed a three-degree rise above preindustrial temperatures.

“Three degrees means no Arctic or Antarctic ice, no glaciers, and very likely no humans.”

“We had a roster system and staff and students participated.

“I guess the biggest thing I took away from that experience is - homelessness doesn’t discriminate.

“There were a lot of people using that service who were once a professional or once full-time employed or once part of a family.

“But the turn of events had put them on the streets - perhaps they didn’t have the family network, or the community network, or the skills to help them through that experience and they ended up in the cycle of homelessness.”

Orange Sky Laundry co-founder Nic Marchesi said a van in Port Macquarie was a great opportunity to help more people.

“We’ve got a lot of interest in Port Macquarie and are really looking at bolstering our services on the east coast.

“Unfortunately, Port Macquarie is an area where there are people that are homeless.

“On any one night 105,000 Australians are homeless and that means one in 200 people don’t have a safe place to call home.”

Erin agrees that there is need in the town and surrounding areas.

“I’ve seen homeless people here and it’s pretty evident there’s a couple of different populations living on the streets in town.

“I’ve been quoted a figure of 150 teens couch surfing, which is homelessness.

“That’s a concerning number and that’s Port Macquarie alone.”

Orange Sky Laundry wash and dry 7.5 tons of free laundry around Australia, says Nic. “But we are not yet in port Macquarie.

“What we’d really like to do is bring our free clothes cleaning service, and conversations, to the area and we hope we can do that this year.

It costs $100,000 to build and roll out an Orange Sky Laundry van and fundraising is well under way, Erin says.

In six weeks $6500 has been raised, with huge support from the Catholic school community, a $1000 donation from the Port Macquarie Golf Club and Ben Creighton from Are Creative has generously donated his creative time and skills.

Thanks for Stroke Foundation support ON behalf of the Stroke Foundation, I would like to thank local residents who took the challenge to Stride4stroke last November and those who supported their efforts.

Collectively we strode all around the world, clocking almost 60,000 kilometres or more than 1400 marathons.

Our striders hit the streets in droves, walking, running, wheeling, cycling and even rollerblading in a community-wide effort to get moving while raising funds and awareness for the Stroke Foundation.

Stride4stroke participants and their supporters were united by one common purpose – to beat stroke.

Rate rise proposal I ATTENDED the pop-up at Laurieton to ask some questions on rate rises.

I was told it is only a small increase of 3.96 per cent in our rates.

If the State Government sets a 2.5 per cent increase that’s a rate increase of 6.46 per cent a year forever and a day.

In the old money they would say if you invested your money at 6.46 per cent a year you would double your money over 10 years.

Stroke is one of Australia’s biggest killers and a leading cause of disability.

It kills more women than breast cancer and more men than prostate cancer.

One in six of us will have a stroke in our lifetime and its impact can be devastating.

Most of our striders have seen this devastation first-hand, either having experienced a stroke themselves or watching a loved one suffer.

Stroke is far too common but we aim to change that. Stroke is largely preventable, it is treatable and I, alongside the hundreds of Australians who took part in Stride4stroke,

believe we can beat this disease.

To beat stroke, we need to attack it on all fronts.

We need to: empower Australians to take positive lifestyle changes to avoid a deadly stroke in the first place, ensure all Australian households know the signs of stroke and know they must call 000 (every stroke is a medical emergency), and research the development of effective treatments to ensure that survivors make their best recovery possible.

Action takes money and your support makes all the difference.

Together you raised more than $170,000, which will make an enormous difference to the thousands

of stroke survivors and their families in the community.

However, we know there is still much to do.

Stride4stroke may have finished for 2016 but you can still be part of the Stride movement, supporting our mission to prevent, treat and beat stroke.

A small donation will help us continue to take great strides in the fight against stroke.

Great windfall for council with low inflation and low interest rates.

I was told that most people were in favour of the increase. I have spoken to many people who say we are on fixed income or are pensioners and don’t like the extra burden on their income.

I pointed out to the employees at the pop-up the amount of development in the Hastings, which is at no cost to council.

I also enquired about S96 which developers must contribute to and where it is spent.

If this proposal goes ahead it will affect every person in the PMHC area.

If you lease or rent you can expect your landlord to increase your rent.

This will impact on you and your business bottom line.

Other councils in NSW were passed fit for the future with the government’s pegged price rise.

Why can’t this council manage its budget like other councils or any business and households as we must do on low interest rates.

Has council made a request to the

Minister for Local Government Mr Paul Toole for an extra rate rise of 3.96 per cent?

If not, why not? It would be rejected. They say this has most people saying yes. This is not my finding.

I think this is a sneaky way of getting around the government to increase rates. Don’t be fooled - it’s price gouging at its best. I would like our local member Leslie Williams to take this rate rise to Minister Toole and also to the ACCC. Brian Lynch Lakewood

Thumbs Down TO the motorists using The Bulkhead like Conrod Straight at Bathurst. The speed limit for our street is 50kmh. Cyclists and pedestrians also use this street and I urge every driver to be aware of their speed. On December 23, there was a collision between two vehicles. Fortunately, there were no apparent injuries requiring hospitalisation. Port Macquarie Police please take note!

Thumbs Up TO Adam Roberts for his informed criticisms of the Port Macquarie-Hastings Council. Inefficiencies, waste, program failures, broken rate promises by Councillors and sham ‘consultation’ all require attention. The sooner the State Government appoints a Financial Controller the better.

Thumbs up TO any coffee shop able to bring beverages to tables. I have a disability and my balance is off at the best of times, so your small gesture goes a long way.

TO the elderly man abusing tourists and locals alike for parking at camel’s track at Lighthouse Beach on Christmas Eve. People like him need to stop and think how lucky they are to live in Port Macquarie. There are a lot more major issues to worry about in this world than who is parking where.

Thumbs Up TO the brave young board rider who I alerted for the couple who got caught in a rip at 8am on Saturday, January 7 at North Haven. Your spontaneous and selfless action prevented another drowning. Visiting tourists, or anybody, if you get into trouble in the surf, please raise your hand and if you’re not certain about local conditions, ask the lifeguards or lifesavers.

Thumbs Down TO the four-wheel drive motorist who reversed into the red car behind him and left a note under the windscreen at North Haven Beach car park at approximately 10am on January 10.

You might like to know you spoilt the driver’s day by not leaving your correct phone number. By the way, the driver was only borrowing the car. It’s on your karma.

I ABSOLUTELY loathe having to ask for help! In most cases I will purposely procrastinate just in case I can come up with a solution and not need to ask for help…sometimes it works out and sometimes it doesn’t.

My name, Sandra means ‘helper/ defender/protector of mankind’ so I suppose I shouldn’t be surprised I don’t like asking for help…it is just not in my nature.

Moving along…I decided last month when moving house that I could do with a bit of help. So, with cap in hand, off I went to source help. Having worked/volunteered with numerous welfare/church organisations in town to help others; I thought I might just see if there was a bit of practical stuff some of them may be able to help me with. I wasn’t asking for money or goods…just a bit of time.

What a demoralising experience that was! It really opened my eyes…I’m a pretty strong and capable individual; I just wanted practical help; say an hour of someone’s time…never again!

It set me to thinking though.

If this was demoralising for me… how is the experience for others in a similar or worse situation who walk in ‘cold’ for help? Quite frankly it must be horrendous!

I get that because I choose not to look like a blubbering wreck that I might not look like I needed help…but really? How bloody judgemental!

Bull clan stung by passion for bees

FOR four generations, members of a Crescent Head family have been attuned to the ebb and flow of nature and the deep cobalt sea.

They know when the trees will blossom and the fish will run.

When he was 12-years-old, Colin Bull had to look after his family’s bee hives.

“Before we could play sport or go surfing we had to do the bees,” he said.

“We had to extract the honey because it meant a few dollars were coming into the family.”

For Colin, that was when his passion for beekeeping really began.

And although he was one of six, he was the only one who wanted to be a beekeeper.

“If you don’t have the passion it won’t last,” he said.

“Bees are part of life and without them our existence would suffer, especially the pollination of plants.”

And even after 47 years Colin’s passion for bees still glows like his delicious golden honey.

“I just love the bees and every time I work

with them I still learn something different,” he said, smiling.

Colin started working at 15 for a rutile mining company based at Crescent Head.

At 24 he went to work for Macleay Valley Apiaries and thanks owner, Roger Blackwell, for teaching him all he knew and giving him the drive to get bigger.

“Beekeeping is an existence close to the land, so you know the seasons and feel connected to the land,” Colin said.

His father always encouraged that connection.

“He knew the land, the sea and the bees,”

Colin said.

His grandfather had a few hives but it was his Dad who developed a real passion for beekeeping, which he has passed down to Colin and now his grandson Bryce.

Colin remembered that wherever his Dad went to work, he always had bees.

“When Dad was an 11-year-old boy he was late home so my parents sent out a search party,” Colin recalled.

“And there he was walking along in the dark, whistling and holding a wild-bee hive inside his T-shirt.”

Colin’s wife, Karen, shares their enthusiasm for bees, honey and flowering eucalyptus.

“It’s a family job,” she said.

“Something that is passed down through the generations.”

Karen also acknowledged that beekeeping was a lot of hard work.

“It gives you back what you put in,” she said.

‘You’ve got to have your wits about you and you have to put a lot of time in,” Colin added.

When asked if he ever gets stung, Colin laughed.

“A million times,” he said.

“I couldn’t count how many times but from one to 1,000,000 each sting hurts.”

Karen laughed too.

“Some people think we must be immune, but no, it always hurts,” she said.

“It’s your job so you put up with it.”

Their son, Bryce, doesn’t mind the bee stings or the hard work either because he thinks bees are interesting.

And like his Dad, he loves to work outside and follow his family’s yin and yang lifestyle.

In the spring and summer the Macleay Valley’s many native trees erupt with blossoms so the bees are busy gathering pollen and making honey.

In the autumn and winter the Bulls take to the sea as professional fishermen, another tradition that has been passed down through four generations of the family.

But for the moment it is summer so the bees are making honey from flowering ironbark and white mahogany, which Colin, Karen and Bryce extract and sell to honey suppliers.

The Macleay Valley has always been Colin’s home and he can’t think of a better place to live, work and raise a family.

IF you are on Lady Nelson Wharf on January 26 you can be assured that you will get wet.

Marine Rescue Port Macquarie will lead the Australia Day Flotilla on the estuary.

“Our new boat PM30 will lead the procession which includes the Chinese Junk, Discovery I and II, The River Princess, Wave rider, Ocean Adventurer, Coffs Harbour Water Police, Port Macquarie Game and Blue Water fishing clubs, six boats from the Maritime Museum, the Excelsior, dragon boaters, outriggers and surf clubs,” Unit Commander Neil Yates said.

“The owners of the River Princess, Chinese Junk, Discovery I and II will generously donated the money from ticket sales on their boats to be split evenly between Marine Rescue Port Macquarie and Sailability Port Macquarie.

Sailability volunteers provide a free service that allows people with a disability to enjoy the experience of sailing on the water.

“I would be dishonest if I didn’t say the volunteers get more out of it than a lot of the people we take out,” Mr Evans said.

“We have one fellow who has been in a wheelchair since birth.

“He can’t speak and can’t move his arms but the look in his eyes - it’s wonderful. He can smile with his eyes.

“Another fellow could only flop down and had uncontrollable arm movements when he joined Sailability.

“Thanks to his therapy and carers he can now walk and we put him in a sling on the boat and he waves a handkerchief as he’s floating around out there.”

Australia Day means lots of happy faces, says boat owner Rebecca Rowsthorne.

“You’ve got to be proud of where you live – I mean Port Macquarie is a great place.”

The owner of the Chinese Junk and River Princess said the Flotilla last year was a great event.

“The atmosphere last year was fantastic, we had music on, people were dancing, everyone got an Australia Day flag, there were lamingtons, ANZAC biscuits, Australia Day cupcakes – it was just one big party,” she said.

THE first ever Charity Dry Land Boat Race will be held at the Laurieton United Services Club on Australia Day. Proceeds from the event will be split with 60 per cent going to the winner’s nominated charity and 40 per cent to the nominated charity of the second-placegetters.

Boats will be made from recycled materials including old boxes, newspapers, magazines, plumbing pipes, electrical conduit, fabric, and maybe even an old bathtub.

Teams will decorate their entry to provide exposure for their business and chosen charity.

We all know how important surf lifesavers are to beach side communities as they protect us when we swim but they also provide opportunities for a diverse range of people to give back through volunteering

How long have you lived in or around the Hastings?

Our family first came to Port in 2000 when we did a house swap to see if we could live here.

Convinced that this was the place to be, we moved in at the end of 2000.

What do you love most about the Hastings?

Trust is what stands out. In the cities you have to work hard to become trusted. Here, people extend trust first and you work to keep it. Trust pervades the community, from the simple interactions in the shops and street, to the neighbourly connections and the friendships built. This is a place to raise a family for that reason.

Where do you work and what do you love about your work?

I love being part of the team that manages the Ark Sports Centre on Lake Road. We are a not-for-profit business aiming to bring families together by providing meaningful activities that the whole family can share. Consequently, we organise a variety of sports such as indoor cricket, soccer, netball, dodgeball, bubble soccer and archery tag. We are also the home of Inflatable World.

What do you like least about your work?

That there is so much we want to do and create more opportunities, and not enough time to do it.

How do you start your day?

I start my day with gratitude and appreciation of who Christ is in me, and the solid expectation that where I am going is already secure and guaranteed for success.

What do you do in your spare time?

Try to figure out why it is spare. Naturally, all business owners understand that such an investment takes all your time, and I love it that my family is also involved. When we do have any time spare we love to do things as a family.

What is the achievement you are most proud of?

Considering that we started with nothing, when we see what we have achieved in just one year we are at once astonished and blessed that we can provide a safe and clean environment for people of all ages to come and have some fun and a good work out.

The program aims to maintain the safety of surf lifesaving volunteers as they serve the community.

The Surf Club Facilities Program provides funding for facilities in our area and across NSW. Grants are available from $40,000 to $350,000.

We all know how important surf lifesavers are to beach side communities as they protect us when we swim but they also provide opportunities for a diverse range of people to give back through volunteering.

Our local volunteer surf lifesavers also benefit through maintaining health and fitness while enjoying our beautiful beaches.

Types of projects that will be funded include construction of new surf club facilities, capital enhancement of facilities at existing clubs and providing ancillary and support facilities at existing venues.

Have Your Say On Housing Reforms: Making it simpler to build a home and enhancing community participation in key decisions will now be easier through a package of red tapebusting reforms released for consultation by the NSW Government.

The proposed changes include standardising the format of council’s development control plans to make them easier to understand and navigate, giving developers incentives to resolve objections before lodging DAs, and focusing councillor attention on strategic planning with greater numbers of DA assessments being processed by staff or local planning panels.

Local communities will have greater opportunity to participate in strategic planning for their neighbourhoods as early as practicable, with each planning authority required to prepare community participation plans.

The community is encouraged to have its say on the proposed amendments to the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act 1979. These updates are on public exhibition until 10th March 2017, and can be viewed at: www.planning.nsw.gov.au/legislative-updates.

Having a bite and talking about Dracula

AFTER a long wait, even years, I found someone who came from Transylvania.

She seemed normal, but I must admit I met her for only a few minutes.

She even knew about Dracula.

It all happened because my wife and I were sitting in a restaurant and I commented on the quality of the food. You should try it sometime, only make sure some of the staff members are listening. You might get a discount. Then again you might not. All of a sudden the chef was at the table. I think he was the proprietor.

During a short conversation he happened to mention that his wife came from Transylvania. It had more impact than if he had said his wife came from Sydney, or Melbourne, or even Wellington.

A few days later we were in the same restaurant and his wife served us. We noticed the accent. It had to be from Transylvania.

I had a toothache, but I thought I had better not mention teeth. I didn’t know her that well.

The Transylvania we’re talking about is in Romania. It gained a reputation because of Dracula.

It is a historical region located in what is today the central part of Romania. Bound on the east and south by its natural borders, the Carpathian mountain range, historical Transylvania extended

westward to the Apuseni Mountains. The term sometimes encompasses not only Transylvania proper, but also the historical regions of Crișana, Maramureș, and the Romanian part of Banat.

In the English speaking world, it has been commonly associated with vampires, mostly due to Bram Stoker’s famous novel Dracula.

The novel tells the story of Dracula’s attempt to move from Transylvania to England so he may find new blood and spread the curse.

Dracula is an 1897 Gothic horror novel by the Irish author, who I suppose could have set it in Dublin, but the impact would not have been the same as setting it in Transylvania.

And think of the publicity Transylvania has received, not all good, I admit.

I asked the tourist office about it, but did not get a reply. Lost in the translation, no doubt.

Transylvania became associated in the Englishspeaking world with vampires.

And don’t get draconian confused with Dracula. The word draconian comes from Draco, an Athenian lawmaker from the seventh century whose aim was to reform the legal system.

What he lacked in compassion, he made up in consistency. In other words, you still lost your head. Transylvania is very picturesque, despite its reputation.

Its culture has been historically linked to both central Europe and south eastern Europe The Munsters were also said to be from Transylvania, referring to it several times in the show both by name and as ‘The Old Country’.

In the film The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Tim Curry played a character that comes from ‘Transexual Transylvania’. The Sony Pictures Animation’s animated Hotel Transylvania series takes place largely in Transylvania and nearby places. It recasts Dracula in a comic scenario.

A few other places include the word Transylvania. Transylvania County in the east of the USA has a mundane history, nothing to do with Dracula. Trans means across and sylvia means forest.

I forgot to ask how the restaurant proprietor met a girl from Transylvania.

THE exceptional music talents of students across the Mid North Coast region are again about to be showcased in the annual ‘Bravissimo’ performance.

The annual sell out concert is now preparing for its seventh year. The highly anticipated event presents the best HSC music students from the Mid North Coast and Tablelands regions.

The performers, who have been selected from State, Catholic, and private high schools, have come from as far as Wingham, Gloucester, Forster, Armidale, Tamworth, Kempsey and Coffs Harbour.

“Each year we have about 15 schools represented in the concert,” said Leanne Johnson, ‘Bravissimo’ director. “This year’s concert will include 20 acts all together, including the finale, which will have all of the performers in it.

“One thing that Port Macquarie and its

Shannon was closely followed by Tahlia McLennan with 97/100, and Jaxon Pollard’s Band 6 mark of 92 /100 also places him in the top 10% of the State for HSC Music.

Ms Johnson said many former Bravissimo performers had gone to become professional musicians in areas such as the Sydney Conservatorium Of Music, or were performing internationally.

It’s no wonder why tickets to the annual performance are snapped up quickly, but there is still a lot of work being done behind the scenes.

“These kids are putting in some amazing

surrounding towns has that some other country areas around Australia don’t have, is the extra community bands, choirs and opportunities to do musical theatre, like at the Players Theatre.

There are wonderful chances for young people to be involved beyond school ensembles. That’s a really special thing here.”

There are five outstanding musicians from Port Macquarie who have been selected to perform at ‘Bravissimo’ 2017 on February 15 at the Glasshouse.

amounts of work to get to the high standard that they are,” Ms Johnson said. “They all work extremely hard.

“Shannon Neville put in the hours and time to refine those extra techniques to get to that really elite level. She is involved in all school ensembles, she has toured to New Zealand as well as throughout Australia and has taken up any opportunity to be involved with getting to perform and receiving professional feedback.”

Council loses in court OVER the last four years, Mid Coast Road Services, a reputable local business employing dozens of local men and women, has been caught up in a ‘David and Goliath’ battle with Port Macquarie Hastings Council over the premature failure of a section of road in Lake Cathie.

Council incorrectly blamed MCRS for a road failure that the NSW Supreme Court found MCRS categorically did not cause.

Council had denied MCRS opportunities for works after the specific road failure issue including an ‘option’ to renew its alreadyawarded contract for future council works.

Before and during the courtroom debate, Council relied on the evidence of a council staff member who the court found did not have experience or qualifications to manage the project and it ended up costing the ratepayers a reported $750,000 with MCRS being awarded costs and damages.

The General Manager’s public comments in response to the case included a statement that read in part: “There will be no specific steps taken

necessarily with regard to road maintenance works as a result of this court case, however it should be noted that all of council’s services undertake review from time to time.”

The mayor had his own response, reading in part: “I have requested the general manager undertake a legal review of all council’s existing contracts that contain ‘options’, including council leases.”

Fellas, please. The issue here isn’t about contacts and leases or even options. It’s a matter of competence, both then and now. It’s also

a matter of confidence in council’s ability to deliver projects without a major stuff up.

Council had its pants pulled down and publicly spanked for getting it very wrong on this one and there should be someone held to account for that.

There should at least be a thorough review of the competence of the whole management team including the General Manager.

To suggest that there would be no specific response is incredibly brazen or even defiant and it shows a total lack of regard for rate-payers’ money that should have gone into fixing the roads instead of litigating.

To add insult to its further-damaged reputation, the General Manager lodges an ‘intent to appeal’ the Judge’s decision.

On what grounds are they appealing, you ask?

A VINEYARD, which began in the 1800s, still survives in the centre of Port Macquarie.

Douglas Vale Historic Homestead and Vineyard keeps alive the viticulture history of the area.

Conservation of the once commercial venture began in 1859 and is kept alive today by the Douglas Vale Conservation Group.

These dedicated volunteers continue to produce quality wines from the historic vines and offer their Cottage Rose, White Cockatoo, Villard Blanc, Heritage Red, Portobella and Chambourcin at their Cellar Door.

Group President Brian Buckett said the vines have recently been netted to protect the ripening grapes from birds.

“The harvest time for the fruit will be early February and if the weather holds up 2017 looks to be great year.”

This Saturday is the perfect opportunity to have a tipple and take a good look at this State Heritage-listed venture.

The vineyard’s Summer Festival and Open Day will be held from 9am until 2.30pm on lovingly manicured lawns amongst cottage gardens.

The family-friendly event will include a Treasure Trove, plenty of craft, a Bargain Basement, musical entertainment, Devonshire teas, a sausage sizzle, wine tastings and much more.

Volunteers will lead tours of the homestead museum where you can learn more about the property’s first owner George Frances and his family.

A winning feeling FOR Macleay Valley resident, Julie Stout, 2017 is shaping up to be a pretty good year, after winning a sporty red Holden Barina in the Big Christmas New Car Giveaway on Christmas Eve. Sponsor of the giveaway, Paul Jones from Futures Fine Furniture and Bedding, handed over the keys last Friday, January 13, and is looking to giveaway another car this coming Christmas.

Having never won anything before in her life, Julie didn’t quite believe her luck when she first heard the news and had to check to confirm it was true.

“It’s so surreal when you win something like that and I just walked around in a daze for ages,” she said.

“I was just shocked.”

Julie has been buying lottery tickets ever since, hoping her luck would continue.

Paul said the car giveaway was a way to

promote Kempsey’s Centrepoint Arcade and to help the town and its shops.

“It was something to create a bit of excitement in town and I’ll be doing it again this year,” he said.

“We received about 7000 entries so the town really embraced the competition.”

The Department of Health sent letters to all clients with a current home care approval to notify them about the reforms and to identify any action that may need to be taken before February 27.

To explain the changes and demystify how those changes will affect you, Rod Lewis and Scott Marsh from Home Instead Senior Care are running a series of information sessions throughout the Mid North Coast over the next three weeks. The sessions will be informal. Rod and Scott will present the changes to the current system and how they will affect each person in their individual situation.

Rod Lewis says the most important changes to note are: Portability: under the new system, home care packages will now follow the consumer; as a client, you can choose your provider and if you’re

not happy you can move to another approved provider. Previously, home care ‘places’ were allocated to approved providers in particular locations.

National queue: a national prioritisation process will be established, including a national package queue. This process will assign packages to clients based on their individual needs and how long they have been waiting for services, regardless of where they live.

“This is good news for the consumers as they will have more control over their home care and a larger variety of approved providers to choose from,” said Rod. “Scott and I have decided to run the information sessions so we can ensure consumers of home care packages on the Mid North Coast are more informed to make the best decision for themselves.”

Businesses heed radio call

VOLUNTEERS love the new emergency service radio base in Port Macquarie.

But it wouldn’t be what it is without the efforts of business and tradespeople throughout the community, Marine Rescue Port Macquarie Unit Commander Neil Yates said.

“Last year we got a new boat that cost around $250,000, we had to replace pylons on the pier at a cost of around $70,000 and the rib needed two new motors which cost $35,000.

“The fit-out of the radio base cost up around the $200,000 mark, which would have been a lot more if tradies hadn’t helped us out.”

Prior to the temporary move from their radio base at Town Beach to the boat shed at Westport Park, a microwave link was established from the top of the Century 21 building.

This ran through an intermediate link to boat shed, Mr Yates said.

“By coincidence we had the radios commissioned at the new radio base in November, but the very next day we lost the intermediate link to the boatshed.

“This meant we had no radios at all and it was going to take at least three days to fix.

“We were faced with a decision – provide no service for three days or move into a halffinished facility.”

The decision was made to move to the new radio base but a work, health and safety issue existed due to the floor being bare particle board.

“So, we rang Carpet Court and said ‘we know you are really busy but right now, within the next two hours, we need you to provide a crew and put down some carpet’, and they did,” Mr Yates said.

“A lot of the fit-out wasn’t complete but the radios were operational.”

Radio Base Operations Officer John Pickett had the radios operational by 6pm and a

“There was a broken-down boat near Point Plomer that was taking on water,” Mr Pickett said.

The nearest 24-hour radio bases are at Coffs Harbour and Forster so the crew of the distressed boat were very lucky.

“To all the businesses and tradies who really went out of their way and helped us by donating a huge amount of material, time and labour, thank you so much,” Mr Yates said.

“It has been a fantastic help to us - you have contributed tens of thousands of dollars.

“Amber Tiles Port Macquarie gave us all the tiles, all the glue, all the grouting for free.

“Carpet Court supplied and installed all the carpet at no charge.

“The painting was largely done by a guy who sunk his boat in the river and we pulled him out.

“Paul Beveridge from Port Electrical did all the wiring for free and CNW Electrical Wholesale and Energy Solutions supplied 50 per

cent of the stuff we needed, for free.

“Fastplast Building Supplies gave us all the plaster and insulation for $1300.

“We’ve saved over $60,000 minimum and that was because Your Local Independent ran a campaign asking for tradies to help.”

Marine Rescue Port Macquarie worked in conjunction with the Port Macquarie-Hastings Council to ensure that the new facility met the requirements for operation, training and provision of state-of-the-art equipment to ensure lives are saved on the water, Mr Yates said.

Council funding was in the order of $150,000 for the refurbishment of the building with another $12,600 toward the interior fit of the radio base.

The State Government contributed $40,000 toward the radio base fit-out.

Port Macquarie MP Leslie Williams joined Marine Rescue Port Macquarie volunteers at their new radio base, to announce their successful Community Building Partnership Grants application.

“The new facility is amazing,” Ms Williams told volunteers when she visited them last week.

“Well done on your persistence, diligence and patience to get to this point.

“I am so pleased you now have a facility you deserve - thank you for your great work in the community.

“You do an amazing job and I honestly don’t think we would get the influx of boaters, particularly during the holiday season, if we didn’t have such a great emergency service.”

Marine Rescue Port Macquarie can now monitor vessels 90 nautical miles (150km) out to sea if all channels are used.

Funding ideas to help young return to work INNOVATIVE ideas that help move people from welfare to work will be funded by the Coalition Government, with the opening of the $96 million Try, Test and Learn Fund.

Using insights from the Australian Priority Investment Approach to Welfare, the Try, Test and Learn Fund will initially target and invest in groups of young people who are most at risk of long-term welfare dependency.

The Minister for Social Services, Christian Porter, has called for new and forward looking ways to support people to have better lives through work and independence from the welfare system.

The Fund is an innovative Government funding initiative. From now until late-February, we want to tap into the best that Australian ingenuity can offer so we can help people currently stuck in the welfare system to find, retain and flourish in long-term employment.

Our priority groups for this first opening of the Fund are young carers, young parents and young students at risk of long-term unemployment.

The Fund is about investing to create opportunities and help people change their lives for the better.

Anyone can contribute and proposals can be submitted using a simple online form on the Department of Social Services’ Engage website.

‘Silent yoga’ is music to the ears PORT Macquarie’s first ‘silent yoga dance party’ will bring together yoga fans of all styles and stages for an evening of fitness and fun.

Silent yoga parties have grown in popularity with participants wearing headphones, hitting the mat and moving in sync to the music.

Organiser Christie Cristoforo from Innovate Body Mind Studio said the Body Minds + Beats event on Wednesday, January 25 will combine yoga, meditation and tunes from DJ Ollie Brooke in a relaxed party atmosphere.

“We’ll start with a 90-minute flowing Vinyasa class at sunset, followed by meditation, and then we’ll stay on to connect and celebrate afterwards,” Christie said.

TRIBUTE has been paid to Johnny Cash by many musicians and bands but never with as much passion as the performance by Spare Cash.

The band, which has been together for three years, studied Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash and know the couple’s whole timeline, drummer Anthony Robinson says.

Their Cash Walkin’ the Line San Quentin Tribute Show is based on the Americans’ concert on January 1, 1958 at San Quentin, a maximumsecurity penitentiary located just outside of San Francisco.

“We’ve known each other for quite some time,” says Robinson of fellow band members Micheal Mac (Johnny Cash), Jordan Cavanagh (June Carter Cash) and Johnno McFadden (lead guitar).

“We’ve all been in plenty of bands and this band is one of those groups where we are very close friends on the outside,” Robinson says.

This closeness helps the group put the real touch on their production, he says.

“We put on a show that is just how the San Quentin concert was.

“Our John and June are very close friends and on stage they give the full performance as if they are married.

“There’s a bit of comedy between them a bit because Johnny Cash was a teaser and everyone has a giggle.”

Carter, who married Cash in 1968, was a successful singer, dancer, songwriter, actress, comedian, and author.

She co-wrote Ring of Fire which became a number one hit and one of the most recognisable songs of the country music genre.

SWR ready for ‘invasion’

THE beautiful beaches, quirky shops and fine dining of South West Rocks will shine as bright as the summer sun when 4000 people arrive in early February to take part in one of Australia’s biggest surf carnivals.

Family members, volunteers and officials will join over 1400 competitors hailing from every non-metropolitan surf life saving branch in NSW for this action-packed, two-day carnival.

Major sponsors, Stramit Building Products a major Australian manufacturer of rolled steel products - believe this year’s competition will be fierce.

This is the second year that the Stramit Country Surf Life Saving Championships have been held at the charming seaside town and events include surfboats, swim and board races, beach sprint and beach flags.

Kempsey Shire Mayor, Liz Campbell, said the Country Championships were a huge boost to the local economy, with the expected 4,000 visitors to this year’s carnival injecting over $3 million into the local area.

“This is great for local businesses and tourism operators, and shows our true commitment to grow our tourism economy,” she added.

“I wish every competitor the very best for the competition ahead, and we’re keen to welcome all visitors back for future stays in our valley.”

Competitors range in ages from Nippers (juniors) to Masters (adults).

The SWR Surf Life Saving Club has 20 adults competing in the Masters’ events and 60 juniors in the Nippers.

Club Secretary, Brienna Elford, said their competitors have been training hard for the Stramit surf carnival.

“The Nippers have been attending coaching clinics over the school holidays and have been training for the march past and have been competing at branch carnivals,” she added.

“There is also a Mid North Coast Junior Carnival at Hat Head on the last weekend of January, which will be good practice in the lead up to the titles.”

The SWR Masters has two men’s surfboat crews currently competing in the North Coast Board Series, which travels up and down the Mid North Coast.

Country Surf Life Saving Championships is a real community event.

A lot of hard work is involved from a group of tireless volunteers who take on roles in everything from administration to first aid to afternoon single entry club select triples are at 1pm. Wednesday Twilights are at around 5.45pm but usually closer to 6pm.

Friday afternoon’s hot conditions didn’t deter 10 teams fronting for our nominated pair’s event.
