Anzac’s new face Anzac Day has changed over the years in the way that the youth of today has “become more and more aware of it and involved

By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC ANZAC Day has a new fresh face and the people it honours couldn’t be happier. RSL sub-branch committees across the Mid North Coast are preparing for their annual highlight – Anzac Day, on Wednesday April 25 and are again expecting an influx of young faces that are growing bigger in number each year. “Anzac Day has changed over the years in the way that the youth of today has become more and more aware of it and involved,” explained Gregory Laird, President of the RSL Port Macquarie sub-branch. “There’s so many more people attending the services now then there was when I was a kid.” Greg has been involved with the RSL in Port Macquarie since 2003 and has been the president since 2004. He recently attended an Anzac service at the West Port Public School. “The little kids ran their own Anzac service and it was absolutely wonderful. They really did it so well,” he said. “And then I went to the high school and they had their own service and it was tremendous too. “So everywhere you go people are really thinking about ANZAC Day and what it means to them. “The thing is, a lot of these kids today, hopefully, will never have had a relative who served in the armed forces and hopefully they

will never have to do it themselves.” Greg served in the artillery division in the Vietnam War and says Anzac Day is certainly not about glorifying war. “Anzac Day has a lot of meaning behind it. Remembrance is a big thing, the camaraderie, the Australian spirit, but it’s definitely not about glorifying war,” he said. “Anybody who has ever been to war will agree that there’s nothing glorious about it, nothing whatsoever. In Vietnam, the first thing everyone looked forward to was the last day they were there.” Join Greg and the community in commemorating those who fought and died for our country on Wednesday, April 25. The Port Macquarie Dawn Service will commence at 5.30am at the War Memorial at the corner of Clarence and Horton Streets. The Main Service march will commence at 10am and the commemoration service at 10.30am at the War Memorial. All ex-service personnel and members of the public are invited to attend. Line dancers from the Macleay and Hastings shires celebrating their 25th anniversary at the Kempsey Heights Bowling Club on Saturday April 7

Line up for better life Shirley started at back of ‘queue’

By SUE PATERICK LINE DANCERS from the Macleay Valley and Hastings shires held a party last week at the Kempsey Heights Bowling Club to celebrate their 25th anniversary. Over 60 boot scooters attended the event to reminisce, laugh and have some fun, but most of all to dance. Kempsey’s instructor, Shirley Barnes, is still as enthusiastic as the day she started 23 years ago. “I love the music,” she said. “But it’s the camaraderie with the other dancers that is wonderful, we are like family.” For Shirley line dancing makes her happy, no matter what her mood was before she started. “If you are having a bad day and you start line dancing you have to concentrate on the steps so you forget everything else,” Shirley said. Shirley and her husband, Gary, used to own the Kempsey Squash Courts where she taught step and circuit training, but she was always on the lookout for something else to help keep people fit and active. So when she saw an advertisement for line dancing classes she went along. Classes were held at the Kempsey Heights Bowling Club with Robyn Ward from Nambucca Heads as the teacher. Shirley admitted line dancing was a little hard to pick up at first so she thought she might

start a beginners’ class herself. “I thought if it was hard for me to learn the steps then it would be hard for other people,” Shirley added. “So I started a real beginners’ class at the squash courts and hoped it would catch on, and it did.” As a beginner herself at the time, Shirley was only one class ahead of her students. For the advanced students she found a more experienced teacher. When beginners watch experienced line dancers and think they can do that too, they are surprised to find it more difficult than they first thought. “Learning new dance steps takes a little time to get the message from your brain to your feet,” Shirley said. “I urge new students not to give up but to give it at least six weeks.” Country music is still a favourite with line dancers, but nowadays other music is used as well. According to Shirley, every bit of music has a different dance routine and some of these are easy to learn but some are harder. Experienced dancers can pick up an easy routine in a few minutes, while the harder ones take a few weeks. “But when you’ve mastered it, it’s a great feeling,” Shirley said. For lovers of boot scooting like Shirley, line dancing never gets boring.

“Not only is it great exercise, learning new dance routines is also a fabulous and fun way to keep your brain active and ward off dementia,” Shirley said. “To keep you brain going, keep your feet going.” Line dancing is also good for your soul because it gets people together to share, learn, exercise and socialise. “When you’re exercising you release all those endorphins,” said Shirley. “And that is relaxing and makes life so much fun.” To give line dancing a go. Head along to one of the weekly classes. Shirley teaches line dancing at the Kempsey Heights Bowling Club on Wednesdays from 10am to 1pm and on Thursdays from 1.30pm to 3.30pm. Marg Ennis teaches line dancing at South West Rocks on Mondays at the School of Arts building from 10am to 1pm, and at the Kempsey Heights Bowling Club on Tuesday nights between 5pm and 6pm. Di Andrews teaches line dancing at Port Macquarie on Tuesday afternoons at the Rotary Hall on Hastings River Drive from midday to 3pm. The cost of each class is just $8 so come along and have a dance. For more information contact Shirley on 0429368112.

A CAPTIVATING night of discovery awaits as Artwalk will once again bring unexpected spaces to life in the Port Macquarie CBD. Artwalk will take place tonight (Thursday April 19) between 6pm and 9pm and is a great family friendly opportunity to experience artistic interventions, illuminations and creative installations. In keeping with the region’s 2018 bicentenary commemorations, the theme for Artwalk 2018 will reflect the concept of ‘journey’. As visitors take in some of the 60 activations that form the Artwalk, they will be taken on a journey celebrating our rich local heritage. The town centre will be a hive of activity as the buildings, galleries and restaurants light up ‘after dark’ with digital and traditional artwork, live music and tasty ‘ArtBites’ in a once-a-year cultural sensory experience. An eclectic mix of live music performances, culmination of Council’s Artsmarts program, local street art demonstrations and unique community art installations will be on offer allowing the community to get involved and marvel at the artistic process. “This year, Artwalk is proud to host some incredibly talented artists including world renowned digital sand painter, John Thiering, whose breath-taking sand and light projections were recently featured in the Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony,” said Group Manager Lucilla Marshall. “We’re also really excited to have live interpretive dance performances on show amidst the array of live art installations, as well as our biggest Artists Markets ever, with over 30 stalls. “Even if you’re not that familiar with art or its creation, Artwalk allows you to dip your toe in the water of the local art and culture scene, and with a number of satellite events on offer this year across the region, there’ll definitely be something for everyone to enjoy,” Ms Marshall said. Satellite events not to miss include the Creative Wauchope Festival, local art exhibitions at the Hastings Valley Fine Arts Gallery and a number of intimate music gigs at local venues as part of the new Artwalk Original Sound Lounge series. “The best way to explore Artwalk 2018 is to download the Izi Travel App and check out the digital event map that lists what’s on and helps you plan your night out,” added Ms Marshall. For more information on Artwalk and associated satellite events or to download the Izi Travel app and digital event map, visit www. pmhc.nsw.gov.au/artwalk Don’t forget to use #artwalkpmq when posting to social media from the event and take part in the online ‘Artwalk Moments in Time’ gallery.

Disabled ramp a must

I AM writing in desperation and on behalf of the disabled members of our community. Access to the shops in Horton Street, Port Macquarie, between Hayward and William streets is difficult and fraught with danger. There is no ramp access midway and if using a wheelchair or walking frame one has to walk in the middle of the road with or against the traffic from your parking spot, to be able to cross the road at the ramp access at either end of the street. The gutters are steep and the driveways on the opposite side are deeply sloped and dangerous to

navigate with a wheelchair or frame. I have previously brought this matter on two occasions to the attention of PMHC only to be advised that it will be raised at their Council’s Access Committee meetings held every two months … end of story! I am hoping that by making this public PMHC may take action to remedy this situation, similar to what they have already done at the other end of Horton Street. Keri Levy Port Macquarie

Coal: ‘less not more’ should be mantra AS a Fellow of the Institute of Engineers, your correspondent Ray Wilkie (Letter of The Week, April 12) should know better than to support the idea of the government building a power station to replace the aging Liddell one. In the first place it doesn’t make sense to invest hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars in a dying industry – renewables are forecast to replace fossil fuels for power generation long before the end of life of such a facility.

Secondly, investing in such infrastructure is contrary to the ethos of the Liberal Party, which believes in small government. And thirdly adding substantially to already egregious contribution of coal-fired power stations to environmental degradation is unwise, if not morally corrupt. John Neilson Port Macquarie

you want to grow it for commercial reasons, then register your business and pay tax like every other business in the country. If you want to grow it for personal use, limit how many plants per adult, per household, can be grown. Cut out the middle man, which is where most of the criminal activity happens and watch the crime rates drop as the power is taken away from organised crime. The country as a whole will benefit from the tax revenue, not to mention that apart from the recreational benefits - cannabis can be used for so many other things - use every bit of the plant and we can produce healing medicines, healthy food, fabric, rope, biodegradable plastic products, paper and a plethora of other uses that can in turn help save the rest of our natural environment. The evidence is there to support it. Like it or not, Australia has one of the largest cannabis using cultures in the world. There is a huge demand for it and it’s not going to go away.Time to put the big girl pants on and realise it’s not going away. So here’s the opportunity to deal with a large proportion of organised crime, increase tax revenue which can go back into infrastructure to manufacture the hemp by-products in Australia, that can be produced from this amazing God-given plant, that a select few, choose to treat as a useless weed!

GLAD to know that more people can now benefit from elective surgery by the funding boost on the Mid North Coast. LAST week, I mentioned how the lunatics are running the asylum. This week? A big round of applause to Donald Trump for confirming my suspicions – excuse my sarcasm, but – what a legend! Surely, we’ve seen enough already to know the man has got to go? Or do we have to continue watching on in stupefied amazement while the King of Lunacy pumps himself up about his missions accomplished? The whole affair is cringeworthy – like watching an extremely bad remake of Mork and Mindy – a grown man, in nappies, in charge of one of the largest political powers on earth, playing with people’s lives - without any direction; let alone accountability. Mind blowing! Last week, I also agreed with John Hewson about his take on the leadership of our country. This week is another first. I’m totally agreeing with the Greens! Yes, I believe cannabis should be legalised as recreational for any adult over 18 years of age – and I have done so since I was about 13. Growing up in a pub you get to see a lot and I’m here to tell you, I’d rather see someone stoned from smoking pot, than drunk on alcohol – any day of the week! Apart from my experiences in hospitality over the years and watching other people and how they respond to different drugs – pot and alcohol and any other substance on board – there are huge social and economic benefits to legalising marijuana. Many moons ago – at least 30 years ago – I told my father: “When I become Prime Minister, the first thing I’d do is put in two years national service, compulsory between high school and university (another column). The second thing I would do is at least decriminalise or at best legalise marijuana. If

Have a cuppa and save lives The cancer stats • One Australian is diagnosed with cancer approximately every 5 minutes, the length of an average tea break. • 1 in 2 Australians will be diagnosed with cancer before the age of 85. • Across NSW, it is predicted that almost 46,500 people will be diagnosed with cancer in a single year, with over 15,500 deaths expected. • It’s estimated that over 1.1million Australians have either survived a diagnosis or are currently living with cancer. • One third of cancers can be prevented by making healthy lifestyle decisions such as enjoying a healthy diet, being physically active, not smoking, limiting alcohol and being SunSmart.

Christina Mastoris, Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea Coordinator for Northern NSW

By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC ONE Australian is diagnosed with cancer every 5 minutes, the length of an average tea break. That’s a big reason why the Cancer Council is celebrating 25 years of Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea. “We get people hosting morning teas on rural farms right across northern New South Wales,” said Christina Mastoris, Communications and Events Coordinator, Cancer Council Northern NSW region. “A lot of our regional hosts are having them in quite small communities and there’s not many people there, so it’s really amazing that they can hold a morning tea for us. They are holding them at places like community halls, RSL clubs, their own homes, and the schools get really involved too.” Christina says that the Mid North Coast should raise around $180,000 from this event. “Obviously its our 25th year and it’s one of our biggest fundraisers for Cancer Council and I think the reason why it works so well is because it’s an opportunity to get friends, colleagues, the community, and family together and have a morning tea, to get together and have a coffee or tea and a piece of cake.

Karren Holstein, right, and her mother Olive Poulter have been hosting Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea events for 21 years “It’s less pressure and it’s quite a friendly environment and easy to do whilst still being able to do something good and raise funds for a good cause.” Two Port Macquarie locals have been holding Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea for 21 years. “I lost my dad to esophagus cancer on April 20, 1997, and that’s when my mother and I started holding the morning teas, in May of that same year,” said Karren Holstein. “I’ve lost quite a few members of the family through cancer.” Karren and her mother Olive Poulter hold the annual event at the Sea Scouts Hall in Port Macquarie.

“This will be our 21st year of holding the morning teas and we usually raise around $500,” Karren said. “We just invite our family and friends so we get anything from 15-40 people. It’s important to us and we hope to do it for many more years.” The official day to host a morning tea is Thursday, May 24, however, anyone can host a morning tea any time in May or June. By hosting or attending an Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea, participants will help Cancer Council NSW continue their life-saving cancer research, prevention, advocacy and support programs. “Taking part is easy – simply register online

as a host, set a date in May or June and start sending out your invites,” said Christina. “An event can be anything from a small gathering at home or in your workplace to a community bake-off competition in your local area.” This year Cancer Council NSW hopes to recruit 11,100 morning tea hosts, including over 1,200 in Northern NSW, and raise over $4.9 million across the state to help everyone affected by cancer in NSW. Register at biggestmorningtea.com.au or call 1300 65 65 85 to receive a free morning tea host kit. Mid North Coast locals who are unable to host a morning tea can still get involved by donating directly to Cancer Council via biggestmorningtea.com.au

“ This is a refreshing change by KSC to improve community consultation with regards to this

issue, but unfortunately the impacts of the AIAC operations will affect the whole Macleay Valley if allowed to proceed and not just the people notified

Council goes back to public By SUE PATERICK

TO KEEP the public informed about the progress of a controversial pilot-training facility at Kempsey Airport, Kempsey Shire Council (KSC) last week sent out over 800 letters and 200 emails to local residents. The content of these letters and emails outlined information about an application KSC received from the Australian International Aviation College’s (AIAC) to modify its development consent for the facility. Property owners surrounding the airport, people who made submissions regarding the pilot training facility or airport noise, and people who attended the 2017 airport community workshops received the correspondence. Council’s General Manager, Craig Milburn, said the application related to the AIAC’s existing operations at the airport and not the formerly-proposed $18 million expansion. According to Mr Milburn, the current development consent that the College operates under is due to expire in early June this year and this new application wants to extend those operations to June 2020 and seeks to change the hours of operation. The AIAC currently operates on Monday to Friday from 7am to 7pm, on Saturday and Sunday from 7am to 5pm and there is no flying on public holidays. It can perform night flights 12 days per year but never on weekends or public holdiays. Its new application wants to change those times to Monday to Friday from 7am to 10pm (Eastern Summer Time), Monday to Friday from 7am to 9pm (Eastern Standard Time), and on Saturday to Sunday from 8am to 8pm (all year). “Council has commenced the formal two-week notification period and are taking proactive steps to ensure the community is

President of the Save Kempsey Airport Action Group, Adam Ulrick, receiving a standing ovation at Kempsey Shire Council’s February meeting for his impassioned speech about the affects a pilot-training facility based at Kempsey Airport has on the community

“Council has commenced the formal two-week notification period and are taking proactive steps to ensure the community is aware of the proposal and how they can make a submission” - Craig Milburn aware of the proposal and how they can make a submission,” Mr Milburn said. At a very feisty February meeting Council resolved to seek maximum community awareness of any further Development Applications (DA) at Kempsey Airport. Adam Ulrick, President of the Save Kempsey Airport Action Group (SKAAG), welcomed Council’s efforts to notify some 800 residents within a two kilometre radius of Kempsey Airport and honour its commitment to keep the public informed about the AIAC’s current DA. “This is a refreshing change by KSC to improve community consultation with regards to this issue, but unfortunately the impacts of the AIAC operations will affect the whole Macleay Valley if allowed to proceed and not just the people notified,” Mr Ulrick said. He was extremely disappointed that AIAC have only now applied to KSC to modify the conditions of its current DA, and brought up another AIAC DA that would see a dramatic increase to the number of flights and operating times. At a public meeting that attracted hundreds of disgruntled residents back in March 2017, the

Northern Joint Regional Planning Panel (NJRPP) - the consent authority for the $18 million airport expansion DA - moved to defer the proposal swayed by many community concerns. “Part of that decision was based on the precedent set by KSC in the current DA with the inclusion of operating hours,” Mr Ulrick said. “The NJRPP decision required AIAC to provide an independent noise assessment to support the expansion of operating hours, but for over 13 months the AIAC have failed to provide any further information to KSC as required by the NJRPP. “Yet, the AIAC is now requesting an expansion of operating hours without the requested noise assessment.” Mr Ulrick believed the proposed changes to extend the operating hours to 15, 14 and 12 hours per day, 365 days per year, including Public Holidays, was in direct contravention of the decision made by the NJRPP. “It is offensive, especially given the level of community outrage over the AIAC breaches of its current conditions of consent,” Mr Ulrick said. “Clearly their planes flying on Australia Day

and a lack of an independent noise assessment shows the AIAC are treating the residents of the Macleay Valley and the NJRPP with complete disdain.” So SKAAG will be asking KSC to consider seeking guidance from the NJRPP and input from the yet-to-meet Kempsey Airport Reference Group about the Noise Management Plan and Fly Neighbourly Agreement prior to any determination being made on this application. “In the meantime SKAAG strongly encourages the whole Macleay Valley community to lodge submissions to reject this application outright,” Mr Ulrick said. One of the AIAC planes crashed on a training flight at Port Macquarie in September last year and the Australian Transport Safety Bureau has still not released its findings as to the cause of the crash. The AIAC’s current application to increase its operating times and how long the facility may operate at Kempsey Airport is available for review on Council’s website under the documents on exhibition section, or at Council’s Tozer Street offices. Submissions close on Monday, April 23, and Council encourages anyone with an interest in this matter to share their opinion in writing. After the deadline, a suitably-qualified person independent of Council will assess the proposal. This assessor will then review the application against the relevant planning legislation, along with any submissions, and will provide a recommendation to KSC. Council will consider the recommendation at an upcoming public meeting and will be responsible for a decision on the application.

FROM THE MAYOR A weekly conversation with Mayor Peta Pinson A few weeks ago I had the privilege of taking a guided tour of the Port Macquarie Koala Hospital, along with a number of our other Councillors and Council staff. I hadn’t visited the Koala Hospital for a while, and what a wonderful experience it was. We really got up close and personal with our furry friends, and learnt a lot about how the hospital operates and the challenges they face. The passion and commitment of the friendly staff and volunteers at the Koala Hospital is quite inspirational, and it’s great to see how close the relationship between Council and the hospital is. We really are collaborating on the many issues related to koalas and share a commitment to doing all we can to protect them.

But most importantly the visit re-enforced how our entire community needs to work together, get involved and play our part in helping to protect our most loved iconic Aussie. Our koalas are a huge part of our community’s identity, and whilst we may not be able to increase the population, putting a handbrake on their decline is within our power. For those of us with young children or grandchildren, it would be so sad if we didn’t all take responsibility and do something now, so that they too can enjoy the koalas in the future like we do today. To help us proactively manage our iconic species, Council is currently looking for your feedback on two key koala strategy and planning documents. The draft Koala Recovery Strategy aims to protect and reverse the current declining population of our local koalas, and the draft Coastal Koala Plan of Management includes

pmhc.nsw.gov.au recommended changes to local planning guidelines, aimed at limiting habitat loss resulting from ongoing development. These documents are extremely important, as we have a small window of opportunity over the next 5-10 years to reverse the trend in declining koala numbers. We really need as much input as possible, for everyone young and old to get involved, and I encourage you to input into the plans which are on our website, up until May 11. And if like me, you haven’t been to the Koala Hospital in a while, or have never been before, make sure you get along, learn, and enjoy the experience as I did. The hospital is a marvelous asset, right in the heart of our town, and is really doing wonderful things for our community. Have a great week, Peta.

The respected Port Macquarie veteran journalist and author has just released his fifth book ‘Another Word’, which explores his passion - language. “My interest in the meaning of words developed on our wedding night in 1964,” explains Laurie. “I had booked a ‘twin room’ for my bride and myself and I was under the impression that a twin bed was a bed for two people. “Eventually after some late night exercise pushing around a heavy wardrobe and two heavy lounge chairs, generally rearranging the furniture in the motel room, I sat exhausted on the chair and said to my wife that I was never going to be a furniture removalist and that I was determined to learn more about the meaning of words.” What followed was a fascinating career as a newspaper journalist and author. Now 76, and retired from newspapers, Laurie and his wife Glenda have been living in Port Macquarie for 36 years. His newspaper career included stints at the Maitland Mercury, Sydney Morning Herald, Newcastle Herald, Newcastle Sun, Gold Coast Bulletin, Port Macquarie News, and Your Local Independent. “I came second in the Australian Journalist of the Year in 1980,” Laurie said. “I saw many changes throughout my career - language is always changing. “I also saw some journalists make up their articles. I don’t understand why journalists don’t go into the courts instead of marching up and down the streets looking at people

Laurie Barber and wife Glenda with one of his earlier books wondering what they might write that might be interesting. “I think I worked through the best period in journalism. When I left one of the newspapers I worked at, my boss said I was the only journalist who had started using handset type and finished up in computerized typing.” Laurie is well known for his ‘My Word’ column, which runs weekly in newspapers across

the globe, including Your Local Independent. He has written more than 1300 My Word columns since starting in 1995. The columns explore meanings of words, phrases and topics including Humpty Dumpty’s fall, Jane Taylor’s Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star, the church where Silent Night was first performed and Davy Crockett. He engages readers with fascinating details,

such as the story behind Les Boots, the world’s ‘worst jockey’. “Another Word explores 101 words and their meanings, along with some entertaining stories,” said Laurie. “Les Boots was the world’s worst jockey. He had 39 starts and 42 falls - he fell off the back of the ambulance twice. The nurse at the local hospital would prepare a bed for him before he rode. His horse was always 100-1.” His books mainly run along the same theme of language and are not only educational, but also insightful and charmingly entertaining. Laurie Barber’s other books are ‘My Word’, ‘Ringo’, ‘Massacre at Myall Creek’, and ‘Please Print’. Laurie’s books can be purchased through www.booktopia.com.au and www.amazon.com and at YLI Office 3/60 Lord St, PMQ.

CANBERRA CONNECTIONS With Dr David Gillespie Federal MP for Lyne

THE Federal Coalition Government’s commitment to getting young Australians working has reached another milestone with more than 20,000 young people placed into work under the Youth Jobs PaTH (PrepareTrial-Hire) program. Youth Jobs PaTH is successfully helping long-term unemployed young people gain skills and experience to improve their chances of being considered for a job. PaTH is providing young Australians with the specific work experience they need to build their skills and confidence. At the same time, an employer gets the opportunity to observe that young person at work and see if they are the right for their business. Our Government recognises that the best way to get more young people into work is to build an economy that enables employers to be more productive and more competitive and to want to hire more people to cope with the increased workload. Australia’s record jobs growth in 2017, continuing this year, shows we are creating the right conditions to support job creation. Youth Jobs PaTH is another important practical measure aimed at helping unemployed young people get the essential work experience they need to secure a job. PaTH is helping ensure our young people are building the skills that will equip them to enter the workforce and build a future for themselves. The Coalition Government is committed to getting as many Australians into work as possible, because we believe the best form of welfare is a job. PaTH interns are fasttracking the skills they need to develop to become work-ready. PaTH includes three flexible elements: o Prepare — Employability Skills Training courses help young people better understand what employers expect of them in the workplace and equip them with the skills, attitude and behaviours required for them to be successful in a job. o Trial — local businesses are encouraged to take on a young person aged 17 to 24 in a voluntary internship for a period of 4 to 12 weeks. Businesses that take on an intern will receive a $1,000 payment, and young people who participate will receive an incentive payment of $200 per fortnight on top of their income support payment. o Hire — a Youth Bonus wage subsidy of up to $10,000 (GST inclusive) has been available since 1 January 2017 to help more businesses hire young people. For more information about Youth Jobs PaTH, visit: www.jobactive.gov.au/path

Booklet features our local Diggers HONOURING The Spirit of ANZAC: This year marks the 103rd anniversary of the Gallipoli campaign and to commemorate the spirit of ANZAC I have again produced an eight-page booklet featuring stories of local diggers. The Spirit of ANZAC is designed to provide an insight into Australia’s military history and particularly the heroic contributions of brave men and women from the Port Macquarie electorate. Australians are proud people who respect tradition and honour great feats of bravery. It is this honour and respect that all Australians have for the ANZAC legend, a legend which was born amid fierce fighting at Gallipoli 103 years ago and which has since grown in spirit during wars and conflicts involving our country’s defence forces. I encourage the communities within the Port Macquarie electorate to embrace the Spirit of ANZAC at this special time. A copy of the Spirit of ANZAC is being sent to each household in the Port Macquarie electorate. Port Macquarie Is Alive With The Sound of Music: The Port Macquarie Hastings Municipal Band will hone its skills and reach new audiences in 2018 thanks to a share of $27,200 in funding. The Band will use $1,300 to fund music reading weekend workshops for bands in the area, led by a special guest conductor. The band is amongst 23 community brass

and concert bands across the state sharing 2018 Community Band Development Grants Program funding from the NSW Government. The band is a very much-loved part of Port Macquarie and I have great memories of their performances. To know that they can improve and extend their offering through this funding is fantastic and I look forward to hearing more from the band throughout the year. Dredging Our Waterways: The NSW Government is providing local councils with an opportunity to apply for a share of $1.5 million in government funding for essential dredging projects. The funding allows coastal councils to apply for up to 50 per cent of the cost of dredging operations and pre-dredging studies for their local waterways. It’s an opportunity for councils to partner with the state government to deliver better access to waterways for recreational and commercial users and safer boating.

Vinnies reopens THE extensively refurbished Vinnies shop in Belgrave Street, West Kempsey, will open its doors for trading on Monday 23rd April, with an official opening to be conducted the following morning. The shop closed several months ago for an upgrading that has included improved access, better lighting and more display space for stock. “This has resulted in a more enjoyable shopping experience and a better working environment for shop staff, both on customer service and back-of-house,” said Michael Timbrell, St Vincent de Paul Society’s North Coast Executive Officer. “All of the shop’s staff are volunteers from the local community, and we are so grateful they retained their loyalty to us during the closure period, and are now returning to help out. We really do thank them for their ongoing support.” The Kempsey shop is one of 28 operated by Vinnies on the North Coast, between Tweed Heads and Laurieton. A new shop was opened in Bellingen’s main street recently and is proving a great success. The refurbished Kempsey shop has been stocked with a wide range of quality recycled clothing and household items at bargain prices, Mr Timbrell said. “The original Kempsey shop was very popular with locals and visitors, and we’re expecting the new shop to be well patronised.”

‘Celebrate’ not always a party I SAW a strongly worded letter, admittedly many months ago, complaining that Anzac Day had never been about celebrating. As I read that letter I wondered if the letter writer knew the meaning of celebrating. The letter writer said: “As a veteran of six years service in the Middle East and Pacific Areas during World War II, myself and my old mates have never celebrated; rather our thoughts have dwelt on our brothers in arms.” In its original sense, celebrate in my opinion was exactly the right word for Anzac Day. And Readers Digest agrees with me. The First English Dictionary, published in 1604, said celebrate’s meaning was “holy, make famous, to publish., to command. to keep solemlie” (its spelling). Celebrate has had a gradual shift in meaning since 1604. It was always used to describe a solemn religious ceremony. Author Eric Partridge says celebrity is “grossly overworked”. My big dictionary says celebrity means “due observance of rites and ceremonies, pomp, ceremony”. But then the meaning of the word changed to “notoriety, a public character, famous, well known”. A celebrant, according to my big dictionary, is “one who performs a solemn rite, or one who officiates at the eucharist.

my

LAURIE BARBER

A celebrant has not been one who organises a wild party, although most people recognise it as such, or at least a party. To celebrate is to keep a festival day “with great solemnity”. It is also “to observe with solemn rites, to honour with religious festivities or other observances”. Shakespeare had a go at it when he wrote in Henry 6 “to celebrate the joy that God hath given us”. The Oxford says the word comes from the Latin to mean “honoured by a great assembly”. Two hundred years after the original meaning of celebrate entered our language, it started to expand to include such meanings as “much talked about”. This led to special occasions to honour feasts or special seasons, such as Easter. Eventually, it meant to have a party. However, the 20-volume Oxford English Dictionary refrains from suggesting the word celebrate has degenerated into modern wild parties.

The Macquarie defines celebrant as “a priest who officiates at the performance of religious rite”. Celebrate, among many meanings, is to “have a party”, but it also refers to “perform a religious ceremony, especially mass”. Collins refers to “a wedding or other important public event”. Webster refers to ceremonies or formalities performed on some particular occasion”. Readers Digest says “Anzac Day is a ceremonial occasion”. Heinemann refers to a religious ceremony. We still celebrate Easter, and weddings, and even funerals, as well as Anzac Day. And that is as it should be. Litany is used a lot to refer to a simple list. A litany, originally a prayer or entreaty, is defined as a series of supplications in which the clergy lead and the people respond. On very few occasions down through the years have people seen litany as a substitute for list. It would seem that right now the two words celebrate and litany are undergoing a transformation that will see them take on entirely new meanings by the end of this century. A passing thought: Why do we write World War II instead of the simple English World War 2? lauriebarber.com;lbword@midcoast.com.au

Glasshouse hosts rock classics THE Crystals, Chris Montez and the Allstars are about to bring classic rock and roll back to Port Macquarie. This classic rock n roll show features two powerful rock acts from the USA and an Australian act that can trace its pedigree back to the start of rock n roll in Australia. The defining American female vocal group of the sixties is the Crystals. Following their successful tour in 2015 they are returning to Australia. The Crystals Wall of Sound recordings, produced by the legendary Phil Spector, include ‘And then he kissed me’, ‘Da do ron ron’, ‘He’s a rebel’, ‘He’s sure the boy I love, ‘Uptown’ and many more. Three Crystals’ songs are included in the Rolling Stone magazine list of the 500 greatest songs of all time. The Crystals are headed up by Dee Dee Kenniebrew, who was in the original line up of the Crystals. Dee Dee said: “We are keen to return to Australia where we met many lovely people and the audiences were super friendly. We are also looking forward to performing again with the Allstars. By any standard the Allstars really rock and are a pleasure to be on stage with.” Chris Montez has never been to Australia. “This is my first trip Down Under. I don’t know why I haven’t been before. Many of my friends who have been say wonderful things about the place,” said Chris. In 1962 Chris’ single ‘Let’s Dance’ topped the charts worldwide. When touring the UK in 1963 his opening act was the English group – the Beatles. (‘I have a nice photograph with the Beatles,’ he says). Herb Alpert suggested Chris consider a soft ballad sound and this resulted in a string of worldwide hits including ‘The more I see you’, ‘There will never be another you’, ‘Call me’ and ‘Time after time’. With his Mexican influence his popularity soared as groups such as Los Lobos topped the charts. The movie ‘La Bamba’ identified Chris and his musical roots, which is

Chris has just concluded a two-month tour of the UK. The Allstars can trace their pedigree back to the late fifties when rock n roll began in Australia. They have performed in the best venues in Australia and have shared the stage with Tom Jones, Rick Nelson, Del Shannon,

Gene Pitney, the Shadows, Chubby Checker, the Platters, the Coasters, Freddie & the Dreamers, Buddy Knox, Chan Romero, Gerry Marsden, the Crystals, Bobby Rydell, Johnny Preston, Johnny Tillotson and Buddy Holly’s Crickets. “The Allstars are very pleased to be part of this fabulous tour and thank the audiences for

their support,”, said Ian B Allen the long-time leader of the group. There are more than forty video and audio recordings of the Allstars in the National Film and Sound Archive and the Performing Arts Museum. As the legendary Hall of Fame DJ Stan Rofe said: “The Allstars are clearly the most authentic and professional rock n roll group in Australia.” This great night of rock n roll is coming to the Glasshouse on Thursday, April 26, at 7.30pm. Book early and come and let your hair down.

Warm weather sparks burn-off warning FOLLOWING the hottest April temperatures on record, the NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) is advising landholders and managers to ensure they have undertaken proper preparations before conducting any burn-offs on their property. While the bush fire danger period may have ended, temperatures remain high. NSW RFS Superintendent, Lachlann Ison, said landholders are encouraged to proactively reduce fuel loads on their property while ensuring burns are conducted safely and legally. “Every landholder has a responsibility to prevent fire from spreading from their property and there can be serious consequences for people who light fires and leave

them unattended,” he said. “A person who lights a fire without the required approvals is guilty of an offence, with penalties including large fines and/or imprisonment. “History has shown that problems occur when people do not adequately supervise fires and an escaped hazard reduction can be very difficult for firefighters to contain.” Superintendent Ison said residents must take current conditions and weather forecasts into consideration before starting a burn. “The primary concern should always be safety, so never conduct a burn if conditions are not suitable,” he added.

“There are alternatives to burning, including hand clearing, mowing, or slashing areas around key assets on the property. “Also, remember to notify your neighbours and local fire authority 24 hours before starting a hazard reduction burn.” NSW RFS members can provide advice about hazard reduction certificates, environmental approvals, weather forecasts and how best to prepare and conduct a burn. “The NSW RFS has a number of publications available through local brigades, Fire Control Centres or the RFS website that can assist landowners in planning and carrying out fire-related activities safely,” Superintendent Ison said.

DUE to recent flooding the number of mosquitoes has increased dramatically and given the size, number and ferocity of these unpleasant blood suckers it is time to take precautions. So the North Coast Public Health

Unit is reminding residents and visitors to the Mid North Coast to protect themselves from being bitten by mosquitoes. According to Public Health Director, Paul Corben, recent rainfall means mosquito numbers

are likely to increase. “Ross River and Barmah Forest viruses are common on the NSW north coast and are transmitted by infected mosquitoes that breed in flooded, grassy and swampy areas and around waterways,” he said.

Mossie virus danger increases after recent flooding

Tricky conditions for Port sailors THE Port Macquarie Sailing Club held race 10 of the summer series last Sunday. The fluky westerly that had been puffing during the morning combined with the fast runout tide caused concern about how much racing could be completed in the conditions, so a short course was set with more laps, so the course could be shortened if the breeze died too much. The fleet struggled across the start line and to the first mark, then the Westerly freshened allowing the full race to be completed quite quickly in the warm, sunny conditions. The catamaran division was won on yardstick by Frank O’Rourke on Dino ahead of Tony Kuhn on Stella and Dave Winter on Spica. Stella was first on handicap followed by Dino and Stella. Simon Gandy and Eli Watson in Voyager were first on yardstick in the monohull division, followed by Terry Howard in Ratz.

Stuart Symons started with Jaiden Burke in Red Star, but as the breeze increased, he went in and swapped the newcomer for his brother Sean, and they took third place. Steve Bohlsen and Ed Molony in Splash Dance were next, ahead of Tony Walker in Deep Purple, and Sharon Carney and Steve Couch in Britannia. Elsa Gandy and Caitlyn Hicks in Sailfish failed to finish, as did Peter Nyberg and Sean Watson in Flying Fish who broke a mast again this week. Voyager also beat Ratz on handicap, followed by Splash Dance, Red Star, Britannia, and Deep Purple. Next Sunday is race 11 of the summer series starting at 1pm. Dave Winter is rostered on duty. Pictured: Simon Gandy and Eli Watson, who won the monohull division on both yardstick and handicap. T. Thrussel, B. King & T Rutkowski, other games next week. Next super Sunday is the 29th April.

footytips

Dragons alone at the top WELL, we finished with a pass mark last weekend – four from eight. Considering just how tough tipping is this season, then that’s OK. But it is so hard to find a form line. Just when you think usual frontrunners – the Broncos and Storm – have fallen by the wayside, they hit back with classy wins. It’s a pity the Warriors’ run came to a halt against the Broncos. If they had won through then this Friday’s clash with the Dragons would have had even more spice – two undefeated teams squaring off. However this will still be the match of the round. As explained below, there is every chance the normally high-flying Cowboys may find their wings again now that one off-field issue (Paul Green’s contract) has been resolved. If teams are struggling on-field, more often than not you will find the reason in a draw in the front office. OK, let’s see if we can do better than 50%. Bulldogs v Roosters (Thursday, April 19, 7.50pm, ANZ Stadium, Sydney): Bookies have the Roosters as firm early favourites in this derby, despite the Chooks being comfortably beaten by the Rabbitohs last weekend and the Dogs having a big win over North Queensland. There is no doubt the Roosters have the personnel to threaten this season, but, like so many of the top sides, just can’t find their rhythm. The Dogs were impressive last weekend, so this will be close. Your Local Independent tips: Roosters Warriors v Dragons (Friday,

April 20, 6pm, Mt Smart Stadium, Auckland): What a clash! The unbeaten Dragons facing the in-form Warriors in NZ. The Warriors are coming off their first loss of the season (against the Broncos). Meanwhile, will this be the game the Dragons take a mental break? Tough to call, but St George have not put a foot wrong this year. They look great across the park. Home advantage did not help the Warriors last weekend. Your Local Independent tips: Dragons Broncos v Storm (Friday, April 20, 7.55pm, Suncorp Stadium, Brisbane): Both teams will be breathing easier after good wins last weekend. While the Broncos’ win was impressive, the Storm’s thrashing of the Knights showed that this squad may be coming back to where Craig Bellamy expects them to be. Both teams still searching for the right replacement for missing Number 7s. Your Local Independent tips: Storm Rabbitohs v Raiders (Saturday, April 21, 3pm, Central Coast Stadium, Gosford): Another two teams coming off a ‘w’. The Rabbitohs have the extra bonus of welcoming back inspirational forward leader Sam Burgess. The Raiders were tipped to do impressive things this year … then the season started! They may still come good, but the Rabbits appear closer to the mark. Your Local Independent tips: Rabbitohs Wests Tigers v Knights

Sharon Griffiths

(Saturday, April 21, 5.30pm, Scully Park, Tamworth): The high-flying Tigers are off to Tamworth for their home game against the Knights. The Tigers continued their impressive form last weekend, putting it to the Sea Eagles at Manly’s home ground. The Knights’ early season enthusiasm appears to be waning. Your Local Independent tips: Tigers Cowboys v Titans (Saturday, April 21, 7.35pm, 1300SMILES Stadium, Townsville): Now that Cows’ coach Paul Green has signed on long-term don’t be surprised if his team ‘settles’. North Queensland are second last on the ladder. Something is obviously amiss and that could have been the uncertainty surrounding Coach Green. They will be tested by the Titans, who desperately want to prove something to their fans in 2018. However the tide should be about to turn for the Cowboys. Your Local Independent tips: Cowboys Eels v Sea Eagles (Sunday, April 22, 2pm, ANZ Stadium, Sydney): Wow, two teams who just can’t take a trick in 2018, especially the winless Eels. Parra were made to look ordinary by the Raiders last weekend – and that is saying a great deal, considering Canberra’s form. And the fact that Manly were booed off by their fans gives an indication of their season to date. The Eels have to come good at some stage. The guess is that it will be this weekend.
