Made with love
By SUE PATERICK
FOR 20 years a group of women from South West Rocks (SWR) have been threading needles with love and making quilts to help children in hospital feel safe, warm and cuddly. According to one founding member Shirley Rogerson, the Friendly Patchers first started making their beautiful and brightly-coloured quilts for Westmead Hospital’s oncology unit and its Quilts for Keeps initiative. “We just wanted to do something to help people and often received thank-you notes and
letters,” Shirley said. For the past 10 years this group of happy ladies have made quilts to raffle off for charities that include the Westpac Rescue Helicopter and the Rural Fire Service. Since 2011 the Friendly Patchers have been holding quilt shows every two years to raise funds for the Macleay Valley Home Hospice. In 2013 the Friendly Patchers discovered a program called Quilts for Recovery and were thrilled to be able to offer their support. In the past four years they have donated hundreds of quilts to the Mid North Coast Local

Fighting for better roads By BARBARA DYER
THE people of rural Rollands Plains truly do feel like the poor country cousins; forgotten by the Port Macquarie-Hastings Council which appears not to care whether the township is accessible during flood, or even whether the roads are safe to trouble. Janette Jones is Treasurer of the Rollands Plains Community Group and a long-term resident in the area and says the fight for better roads has been going on since before the amalgamation in 1981. She says the problems of flooding causeways and unsafe narrow roads has not gone away but the issues were no longer on the council radar. “In 1988, after my son lost 27 days schooling due to the crossing going under, the issue of raising the crossing was being considered,” said Ms Jones. “But nothing happened, despite continuing to request improvements to our local roads for many years. “In the past three years the Rollands Plains Community Group has sent numerous letters, addressed open council meetings and had meetings with councillors and staff but we are still unable to get any improvements to extremely unsafe road conditions. “We have log trucks nearly colliding with the school bus and children unable to attend school because of flooding issues, yet the council is not taking our needs into account. “This is discriminating against rural residents.” Ms Jones says to make matters worse, it appears the current council simply has no priority list. “We have asked what the criteria is to get work done. It seems factors such as school bus runs and population would make a difference but we can’t compete with that,” she said. “We have 465km of rural roads for which this council simply has no plans.” Ms Jones said residents would argue that their lives and livelihoods are just as important as those of people living in Port Macquarie and other larger centres. “We want a return to the original policy of rural road upgrade where, every year, sections of unsealed roads were upgraded to sealed. This has not happened since the amalgamation of the Port Macquarie and Hastings Councils,” she said. She said even the roadside vegetation was an issue, with council budget constraints meaning they tackled the work every five years. “It’s work that needs to be done every two years,” Ms Jones said. Ironically for this rural area, it’s the trucks that pose the danger on roads which are too narrow for cars to safely pass or move off the road when trucks rumble through. “We have blind corners, trees too close to the edges of the roads which need grading,” said Ms Jones.
Flooding and unsafe narrow roads (below) have been an ongoing problem for residents of Rollands Plains for many years but nothing has been done to improve the situation
“We have another letter dated preamalgamation when it was planned to tar Bril Bril Road. “Instead, it remains a narrow, uneven dusty road which is made even worse due to the heavy vehicles that use it. “We have spoken to the truckies and of course it is an issue for them too. They do what they can by slowing down on the road, but much more needs to be done to fix the issue.” Ms Jones said residents of the area were not asking for anything extraordinary.
They just want the basics – a road that is safe and driveable and crossings that do not go under when creeks rise. “Even to hear council had a plan; that we were on some kind of priority list would at least give us hope,” she said. “I am sure there are State government bodies; perhaps State forestry; maybe the trucking companies that use the road, who could be asked to help fund repairs and maintenance. “We could obtain government grants like Roads to Recovery and assistance from the

Bridge Renewal project. “If the roads were made a priority, we could apply for a portion of the fuel excise to pay for road upgrades. “This fight for better rural roads has been going on for at least 35 years. We would like to see State and or Federal Government input to assist council with the back log of work that desperately needs to be done to bring this locality, in fact the entire shire’s rural road network to an acceptable standard. “We want Bril Bril to be upgraded and sealed. Heavy vehicles use it daily and the surface becomes slippery with greasy mud in wet conditions and has slippery fine powdery dirt in dry conditions. “The dust kicked up by all vehicles creates poor visibility. The crossing between properties 328 and 370 Clarefield Dungay Creek Road – Marlo Merrican Creek, needs to be raised. During flood the road is impassable, with children unable to attend school, people unable to go to work and or residents unable to return home. “Council needs to adopt a long-term sustainable plan of works to systemically upgrade all the roads in the Rollands Plains area. In fact, Council needs to have a sustainable plan of works to upgrade all rural roads within the shire of Port Macquarie-Hastings.” In the NRMA “Open Road” Sept/Oct 2017 it was revealed the North Coast had a backlog of $430.7 million earmarked for rural roads.

SSM has led to abuses
I CANNOT let the letter written in last week’s Independent by Miriam Loftus go unanswered. Firstly, she says that there has been very little abuse of human rights by the LGBTIQ people where same-sex marriage has been introduced? Now this is clearly wrong as any investigation will tell you. Not only have Pastors and shop owners been fined - and in Canada’s case - gaoled for standing against SSM, but in England Tim Farron, leader of the third-largest political party, the Liberal Democrats, was hounded from office for daring to stand up for Christian values even though he was a SSM supporter. He said it is now impossible for a believing Christian to hold a prominent position in British politics. Also in Britain, the High Court ruled that a Pentecostal couple could no longer adopt or foster children because they refused to “celebrate” homosexuality in raising the children under their care. The High Court decreed that above all else: “The equality provisions concerning sexual orientation should take precedence”. Practicing Jews, Muslims, Christians and Sikhs, who want to stay true to their religious teachings, can no longer adopt children. Dame Louise Casey, a senior government advisor, recently insisted that it is now: “Not okay for Catholic Schools to be homophobic and anti-gay marriage”. One could go on but obviously for time and space I am limited. But there are hundreds of like cases. See www.spectator.com.au and Catherine Sheehan, The Catholic Weekly. Aug. 2017.
Secondly, Miriam Loftus says that Jesus did not discriminate against anyone. Are you serious? Read the Sermon on the Mount for starters. (Matthew Chapters 5 through to end of Chapter 7) Also we get a clear idea of Jesus’ views on marriage found in Matthew 19, verses 4 to 6. Finally, if Jesus was such an easygoing person, then why was he crucified by the mob? Because He always told the truth and never compromised when dealing with sin. If you value our freedoms and the sanctity of the home with the traditional family of a mother, father and the procreation of children who are then raised in the God-designed model, then vote No! HANDS up those of you who are simply OVER IT! Over the displays of general chaos and lunacy, right across the board that seems to fast becoming the norm! Globally, we have Don and Kim puffing up their chests at each other while spewing forth threats and vitriol - like the Class A bullies they are – and the world watches on in bemused shock. I am not shocked or bemused, my low opinion of Trump hasn’t changed…I’m totally mortified that these two psychopathic egomaniacs hold the powerful positions they do, let alone that they are both wasting precious oxygen! Surely their constant blasts of ‘hot air’ must be contributing to the acceleration of global warming and should be dealt with? Whatever happens from here on between these two, it isn’t going to be pretty…unless someone comes along and knocks one, preferably both, of the peacocks off their perches. Sooner, rather than later would be great…last year would have been absolutely fabulous! Unfortunately though, we are feeling the trickle-down effect and it is infiltrating every inch of our global community. It’s always been a dog-eat-dog world but Don and Kim have taken it to a whole new level. It seems that any behaviour from political leaders is now acceptable…especially acting like spoilt, dummy-spitting brats with a heavy dose of racism, bigotry and misogyny thrown in for good measure…it’s diabolical and a recipe for disaster. Have a gander at the state of affairs in NZ politics…nearly a month after their election and they are still waiting for NZ First party leader Winston Peters to negotiate a deal. To quote a kiwi friend of mine “it is crazy how one party can get 7.5 per cent of the vote and dictate who runs the country.” I hope for the sake of NZ, Winston makes his decision based on what is best for the country

THANK you to the Roto House, Lord Street for the fantastic party that we had as they celebrated 50 years of national parks - and we also celebrated my granddaughter’s birthday. Also thanks to performer Andrew Cousins as he sang ‘Happy Birthday’ making the experience even better.
TO the Port Macquarie-Hastings Council on the ‘go slow‘ on local road development. Overseas experience has shown that extra roads only get filled with cars as soon as they are built. In the US they are now demolishing expressways. New cycleways, public transport, motor scooters etc are the way to go.

rather than what will serve his ego. Then we look at our own political leaders… they’re not all bad; but they’re not all what I’d call ‘grand’ examples of elected representatives either; whatever the level of government. Credit where credit is due, politics is a tough gig and most of our politicians start out with the right intentions - these people put their hands up to represent and serve our community, to stand up for what they believe in and to push for necessary change. The biggest problem? Apart from the bureaucratic red tape bullshit they are up against? Most of our politicians don’t seem to have the balls to make the tough decisions anymore. It’s one big mutual admiration club where ego stroking and arse kissing abounds, if the big players are catered to; nothing else matters. Or on the other end of the scale and to be completely bi-polar…they are too busy plotting the demise of their opposition to achieve what they’re paid to do…govern the country! Despite how highly entertained we are by the now acceptable, but still wildly inappropriate behaviour of a lot of our political leaders; the sad reality is the fallout at the base level of society. The bar of social standards is dropping at a rapid rate of knots, it’s coming from the top and while Australian leaders keep pandering to Trump, the banks, the big corporates and the churches rather than listening to the people it’s not going to improve anytime soon. Seriously, if this is the calibre of our global leaders today…what have our youth got to aspire to for the future? We certainly don’t need any more clowns!

Cinema project reviewed By SUE PATERICK
The concept for the Kempsey Cinema complex million loan and $2 million grant funds would be written off while Council incurred a potential liability of an additional $800,000. While the PRC acknowledged that Council appeared clear and accepting of this financial risk, it felt the community was not. Council’s Acting General Manager, Daryl Hagger, said Council staff were currently working through some additional feedback from the OLG. “In response we are exploring alternative funding models for the project,” he said. “Following these investigations and
considerations, it is anticipated that we may be in a position to bring an updated report to the November meeting of Council.” According to an OLG spokesperson, the Project Review Committee has recently responded to KSC about the additional material the Council has supplied to the committee. “Public Private Partnership projects need to be independently and rigorously appraised before contracts can be entered into,” the spokesperson said. “It is Council’s role and responsibility to ensure this is carried out.”

“
AFTER the Office of Local Government (OLG) stopped it from proceeding several months ago, the controversial Kempsey Cinema Project may be up for discussion again at Kempsey Shire Council’s (KSC) November meeting. At the time the OLG’s Legal Director and Chairman of its Project Review Committee (PRC), Grant Gleeson, wrote a five-page letter to Council outlining a raft of issues in the cinema project he thought posed a financial risk to the community. The PRC is responsible for reviewing Public Private Partnership (PPP) proposals submitted by councils. In his report Mr Gleeson said it was clear the PRC was unable to form a positive assessment of Council’s procedures and processes to date and advised Council it was unable to proceed with signing the cinema contract. He also wrote that due to PPP guidelines Council could not proceed with the signing unless the PRC gave the development a positive report card. The fact Council had not fully considered adverse comments from independent consultants was also a concern. The letter contained 11 dot points outlining issues such as Council appeared to be unnecessarily subsidising Majestic beyond what would be considered commercially viable to sustain the cinema’s operations, and that Majestic’s expert analysis of the project’s business plan ‘showed little confidence in the cinema complex being viable.’ It also stated there was no effective security given, nor obvious means to repay the money needed for the project, considering the $2

“
THE Kempsey District Silver Band’s annual Musical Swap Meet in late October is so much more than an exchange of instruments. Last year more than 500 music enthusiasts gathered around the Kempsey racecourse to check out the instruments, but more importantly to mingle with like-minded people. “We can’t believe how many people came last year,” said Simone Farrell, Community Engagement Officer for the Kempsey District Silver Band. “It’s a great opportunity for all of the talented musicians in the Macleay to meet and last year I set up jamming tents and they all brought their instruments and just played together. It was really sweet. It was a really good networking event as well.” The event hosts a variety of stalls, from vintage vinyl records for sale to live acts. “Last year we had an accordion player and a violinist performing at the grounds,” said Simone. “We’ve actually received a grant from the regional arts fund of New South Wales this year to pay great musicians to do free music workshops which is super exciting because we are trying to inspire the next generation and this is a great way to do it because it’s really daunting, the whole world of music, if you don’t have an instrument. “We are trying to show people that you can access instruments and we can teach you how to play for a really low cost with the local Silver Band.” The Kempsey District Silver Band (KDSB) has been a volunteer-run organisation since 1886 and has led the Anzac Day March in Kempsey since 1952. The Band brings the gift of big band music to the regional community as well as at the grassroots level. “We just found that the numbers for the Silver Band were getting really low and there
hundred years old so we desperately want to update them
are so few music programs in schools these days and we don’t want it to be a dying art,” Simone explained. “And the benefits are huge. I’ve three kids who are in the Silver Band and I’m such a big advocate of it because I just saw what an immense change it made to them, especially their rapid mental development from learning how to read music. I just think how lucky we are that we have something like this in Kempsey.” Ultimately, it’s up to the community to support the great efforts of this local band. “A lot of the instruments the kids are playing in the band are over 100 years old so we desperately want to update them,” said Simone.. “For us it’s a massive shot in the arm because we need money to stay afloat, we need money to buy instruments, and we need money to ensure we can offer really low-cost music tuition otherwise it’s not going to keep going.” The Silver Band plays annually at the Anzac Day March and services, Kempsey Riverside Carols, Kempsey Show, South West Rocks
Carols, Relay for Life, South West Rocks Lions fundraising events, Kempsey Eisteddfod, and Christmas shows in many aged care facilities. “We are there for the community pretty constantly,” Simone said. “Whenever any event comes up, we are generally asked to play at it and of course we play at them for nothing.” The musical swap meet will not only cater for musicians, but for the whole family, featuring a coffee van, barbecue, cake stalls, jumping castle, and something to amuse anyone. Join in the fun on Saturday, October 28, at the Kempsey racecourse from 9am-2pm. Entry by gold coin donation. Potential stallholders and performers are needed. Simone would also love to encourage HSC music students to take to the stage even if it’s only for a song or two. For more information call Simone Farrell on 0408 171 172.
• From Page 1 According to a member of this creative group, Jen Smith, every quilt is stitched with love and the knowledge that each one plays an important role on the journey of recovery for a young person. “It is immensely rewarding,” Jen said. “And we all feel truly blessed to be a part of the wonderful Quilts for Recovery project.” When asked how they make such lovely quilts, the ladies chuckled like a family of kookaburras at dawn. “We spend a lot of money on material to cut it up and sew it up again,” someone called out, resulting in more laughter. “We do co-operative quilting,” Jen explained. “We each make one square block of about 30 centimetres and join them all together.” The ladies only use 100 per cent cotton and some quilts have patterns but others are made up as they go along. It can take about 20 hours to make a quilt, but it depends on the pattern and each person’s experience and sewing skills. When they are making quilts for charity the ladies make them as quickly as they can. A lot of the Friendly Patchers have different skill sets and they always have a day where someone teachers the group a new technique. For Janice Davis quilting has been a passion for over 20 years and she just loves it. Judy McConnell finds quilting very therapeutic. Kay Robbins thinks quilting is also rather addictive. “Cutting out, designing and sewing a quilt is quite meditative and I love it,” Jen said. One thing is for sure, each quilt is made with lots of love and laughter. “We really value and appreciate the relationships we have with our community partners, in particular the support of the Friendly Patchers for this amazing project, Ms Noble said. “Their ongoing commitment has ensured that we are able to offer a quilt to each child or young person who comes into contact with our service across the Hastings Macleay Clinical Network area.”
Australia Day Awards NOMINATIONS for the Kempsey Shire Council 2018 Australia Day Awards are now open. Kempsey Shire Mayor, Liz Campbell, said each year Council recognises local residents for their outstanding contributions to our community. “It is that time of the year, where we are asking members of the community to nominate the next Kempsey Shire Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year, Community Group of the Year and Volunteer of the Year,” Cr Campbell said. The 2018 Australia Day Awards will be presented at the annual Australia Day Awards Ceremony at the Slim Dusty Centre on Australia Day eve, January 25. Nomination forms can be obtained and lodged online at www.kempsey. nsw.gov.au/ausday

MEMBER for Port Macquarie, Leslie Williams has led a delegation from Port MacquarieHastings Council to meet with eight NSW Government Ministers. “I was very pleased to arrange these meetings for our new Mayor Peta Pinson, Council’s General Manager Craig Swift McNair and Director of Strategy & Growth Jeffery Sharp. “Over two days last week we met with Minister for Roads Melinda Pavey, Minister for Local Government Gabrielle Upton, Deputy Premier John Barilaro, Minister for Primary Industries Niall Blair, Minister for Lands Paul Toole, Minister for Tourism Adam Marshall, Minister for Planning Anthony Roberts and Minister for Family and Community Services, Pru Goward. “Giving the Council delegation the opportunity to discuss a broad range of issues with the Ministers was invaluable to them, as well as providing the Ministers with issues that
are important to the Port Macquarie-Hastings Local Government Area,” Mrs Williams said. “We discussed many issues including the sealing of Maria River Road, the proposed upgrade of Boundary Street, Ocean Drive duplication, highway destination signage, the future of the Plaza Carpark site, the Beach to Beach shared walkway, the Lake Cathie Revetment Wall, Feral Deer Management and public transport needs for the future. “Whilst I had previously discussed many of these issues with Ministers, it was important that they meet with the Council delegation to hear their concerns first hand.” Mayor Pinson said Council is grateful for the opportunity to meet with the various ministers. “The meetings provided us with the opportunity to talk about many important issues affecting our local community. We are enthusiastic about the future opportunities that may arise,” she said.

According to MVHH President Lesa Morrison, 200 to 250 people attended each event over the past few years so they needed a bigger location. “The new venue at Kempsey Racecourse will allow more people to come and enjoy the day,” she said. The MVHH raises funds to buy equipment such as lift-up beds and rocking chairs and shower and toilet aids, which allow terminallyill people to remain in their own homes as long as they can. The organisation works closely with the Palliative Care Service at Kempsey District Hospital. To help raise as much as they can for this very worthy cause, the hospice is also involved with other local groups. “We are very, very fortunate to have the amount of groups we have here in the Macleay Valley who help raise money for us,” Lesa said. “It’s just phenomenal and we are so lucky to have the caring people we do. “It’s just a wonderful place to live.” A spokesperson for the Mid North Coast Local Health District said the local Palliative Care Service was very grateful to Macleay Valley Home Hospice for their continued support.
Stephanie Scott from K & A Boutique is one of the dressers at this year’s Charity Fashion Parade to be held at Kempsey Racecourse on Saturday, October 21. Gates open at 1pm The MVHH also holds raffles outside the West Kempsey Post Office, Woolworths and the Coles complex at South West Rocks for about four months prior to the Charity Fashion Parade. There will also be a big raffle on the day, plus delicious scones with jam and cream. During the parade itself a group of local ladies will model spring’s vibrant clothes, shoes and under garments from Kempsey’s wellknown leaders in style: K & A Boutique, Just Lingerie and Arcade Shoes. “The Macleay Valley Home Hospice is a wonderful cause and it’s such a fun afternoon,” said Narelle Wellings, owner of Arcade Shoes. “The models are not professional but have
been doing the fashion parade for a number of years now so they are quite competent and very good.” Vivian Kyle, owner of Just Lingerie, echoed Narelle’s sentiments. “We’re doing it for a great cause and it’s such an enjoyable and casual afternoon with lots of colour,” she said. “It’s just a great way for people to get together for a fun afternoon tea.” The Charity Fashion Parade starts at 2pm but the gates at Kempsey Racecourse will open at 1pm. Cost is $8 for adults and $3 for children.

CARERS count! Help raise awareness this National Carers Week by saying ‘thank you’ to Australia’s unpaid carers for all they do and let them know how much they count. National Carers Week 2017 (Oct 15-21) is a time to recognise and celebrate the outstanding contribution that Australia’s 2.7 million unpaid carers make to our nation. One in eight Australians provide unpaid care and support to a family member or friend with a disability, mental illness, chronic condition, terminal illness or who is ageing. Carers make an enormous contribution to our communities as well as our national economy and National Carers Week provides you with a chance to show your appreciation. Take a couple of minutes to show your appreciation and write a personal message online on the National Carers Week website ‘Thank You’ wall and help us to build a carer-friendly Australia. By doing so, you can help us demonstrate the considerable community support for Australia’s carers. You can also help raise awareness by rounding up workmates, friends and family for a National Carers Week event. Visit www.carersweek.com.au for more information on how you can say thanks.
A quick word about minutes
MOST organisations (dare I say all?) have secretaries. Those secretaries keep minutes of meetings, and probably many of them have no idea why minutes have their name. Clocks have minutes, and hours, and sometimes -- often in motels -- the alarm goes off just when you don’t want it to, usually about 2am. Check the clocks before you go to bed. Anyway, this column isn’t about minutes of clocks. This column is about minutes of meetings. The word minute represents something in miniature. The idea is that the secretary takes down often the names of people there and the important decisions, subject to the organisation’s policies. The action of taking the minutes has been referred to as minutation, but you won’t see that word in many dictionaries. Minuteness is the quality of being extremely small. Some associated words are minuteless (not to be measured by minutes), minuted (recorded in a minute or note), minutely (every minute), minuter (one who writes minutes), minutie (a trifling detail), minutial (pertaining to details), minutious (dealing with minutes) and minutulous (very small). A minute is the 60th part of a unit. I have seen it used in reference to the word modern, such as

“up to the minute”. I have also seen it used as a moment in time -- “the minute he walks through that door…” The town in which I live has signs on some posts, saying “three minutes to such and such” referring to different parts of town.. Dictionaries might say a unit of something small, such as a coin of trifling value. They might also say an agreement of something or an understanding. The Macquarie Dictionary says the word, in plural, records the proceedings of a meeting. The word represents only the outline of the meeting, so the secretary, or the minute taker, records only the decisions taken and the other materials according to the direction of the organisation. Who spoke and what they said are almost never recorded. Stephen Murray-Smith said minutia was often found in the plural and meant very small

or trifling details. Eliezer Edwards in his 1901 dictionary said minutes of a meeting were so called because they were formally taken down in minute characters preparatory to being engrossed, that is written in large characters for preservation or record. Okay, that would have been worded differently today, but that was more than 100 years ago and our language is changing all the time. The first English dictionary, prepared in 1604, said of minutely “smally”. You can’t get much smaller than that. Wilfred Funk said minute meant small, “which gives us our minute, or 1440th part of a day”. John Ayto agreed but added that the minutes generally were a rough draft in small writing. He added that minute was a small unit of time, which English acquired from old French. Nigel Rees said the minutes were taken down in small writing “so they could be engrossed or put into larger writing later. I couldn’t understand that. Why would you put minutes in small writing so you could put them in larger writing later? I know that in my secretarial days I would write the minutes in longhand, then tear out the page and paste the page in the appropriate place later. It saved a lot of work and nobody ever complained. lauriebarber.com; lbword@midcoast.com.au.

Hastings fete aiming for $13,000 By BARBARA DYER
Local DJ Jimmy Laing
THE smell of toffee is in the air; favourite recipes are being baked; pre-loved books, clothes and toys have been gathered up and potted plants given a final watering in readiness for Hastings Public School’s biannual fete this Saturday. Hastings Hullabaloo is the major fundraising venture for the school’s P&C Association, and together with an enthusiastic trio of mums on the co-ordinating committee, they will be aiming to raise $13,000 from the event. It’s the first time Kristy Burt, Kelly Page and Katie Wilson have worked on the fete committee but they know that once the gates to the fete open, it will be rewarding for everyone. “The whole Port Macquarie community is invited to Hasting Hullabaloo and we expect

pretty much every one of our 705 students will turn up with siblings and family,” says Katie. “Funds raised go towards projects and educational resources. “Our main fundraising focus this year is to install a covered outdoor learning area over the netball court. This area is used for multiple purposes and a roof will ensure the area can be used in all weather conditions. “Hastings Hullabaloo is not only about raising funds for the school. It’s a chance for parents to have a little fun with their children.” From 10am until 2pm, October 21, families can enjoy pony rides, sweet treats, refreshments, arts and craft stalls, games, face painting, plants, jumping castle, pre-loved treasure tables, the chocolate wheel, a raffle and a petting zoo. “We will also have the popular chocolate
wheel and side show alley with prizes on offer,” said Katie. She added the Bottle Lotto was expected to be a favourite with players rolling the dice for a chance to win donated prizes in jars. “Jessie’s Riding School will also be having pony rides and Port Macquarie Party Castles will be there with an obstacle course and sumo wrestling suits,” Katie said. She said there had been a lot of meetings and phone calls in conjunction with the P&C Association; a lot of ‘running around’ with Kelly and Kristy, and all were as excited as anyone to see it all come together. It will be the first fete for new Hastings Public School principal Jodie Paterson who said the success would be thanks to the parents and the local and wider business community.
By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC BORN and bred in Port Macquarie, one of Australia’s next DJ sensations will be making his mark at the upcoming Lunar Electric Festival. Local product Jimmy Laing will be playing alongside the likes of Timmy Trumpet, Will Sparks, Tigerlily and Bombs Away. “The Lunar Electric is going to be massive,” said Jimmy. “I’ve never actually had my parents at any of my gigs, it’s mainly because they are in night clubs, but being an outdoor festival I reckon it’s going to be a pretty big stepping stone to have my parents there at the festival and a lot of my close friends will be there supporting me.” The former Camden Haven High School student holds down a residency at Altitude Nightclub in Port Macquarie and is now playing at the region’s biggest festival. “I picked up a laptop when I was at a party when I was 15 and just pretty much had a knack for it since then,” Jimmy said. “I’ve been touring with the Intensive Series, a group of people that are going around Port Macquarie, Tamworth, Gunnedah and Coffs Harbour doing shows and getting headliner acts and then supporting other smaller DJs. “I love touring, it’s great fun, you meet so many people and I love going to different places. Every show is different.” The 24-year-old mechanic by day says he looks forward to getting involved with the audience and giving them exactly what they came for. “I’ve learnt how to adjust to audiences,” explained Jimmy. “I’ve learnt what crowd to please at each venue, whether I’m at the Macquarie Hotel or Altitude Nightclub, it’s always a different genre of music I have to play, but I’ve adapted to each group of people I have to play for.” The sky’s the limit for the local DJ. “I’d like to keep on touring and venture out of NSW in the near future,” said Jimmy. “I’ve only played locally for the past couple of years so I’d like to see what’s around. I work as a mechanic during the week in Laurieton and DJing has just been a bit of a hobby the last couple of years but it’s stepping out of that at the moment. “ Port Macquarie’s music scene is strong and Jimmy Laing has some tips for budding young musicians. “Just go for it,” Jimmy said. “Just remember, nothing happens overnight and you’ve just got to keep at it. “Don’t give up just because you’ve had one bad gig - and I’ve had plenty of bad gigs - but there’s always that one great gig that makes up for all the bad ones.” The Lunar Electric Festival is on January 6, 2018, at Cassegrain’s Winery, Port Macquarie. Tickets are $125 and $240 for VIP. For the full line-up and to purchase tickets visit www.livetix.com.au

Locals help Thai orphans By BARBARA DYER AS far away as an orphanage in Thailand sounds, it is very close to the hearts of a group of friends from Port Macquarie who have recently spent a week working on an ongoing project. The group of Dale and Robyn Richardson, Ron and Jenny Burt, David and Grace Livingston and Wayne and Vicki Crow are eight volunteers from the Port Macquarie Adventist Church. They are also friends of fellow Adventist Ian Adams and his Thai wife Buaket Adams, who together run the orphanage. “Ian grew up in Taree and moved to Thailand when he married Buaket,” explains Robyn. “He is a member of the SDA church and the orphanage is run by the SDA church in Thailand.” Certainly for the 25 children who call the Asian Children’s Foundation Orphanage ‘home’, the volunteers must seem to be heaven sent. “The accommodation for the children was built in 2014,” says Robyn, who has made a number of trips to the orphanage with the volunteers. “It’s an ongoing project and has involved both building accommodation for the children, as well as this time we were busy painting inside and outside the main administration building.” The group have regular car washes to help raise money for the orphanage which is about an hour out of Chiang Mai in a beautiful setting. During her visit, Robyn and Dale were also able to meet up with their sponsor child, Mechana. “We all really enjoy our work with the orphanage,” says Robyn, who also fulfils the roll of ‘nanna’ to the littlies at the centre.

PORT Macquarie’s Dennis Bridge has been given a new lease of life after the completion of major maintenance work. Member for Port Macquarie Leslie Williams said the $2.3 million work was funded under the NSW Government’s $1.5 billion maintenance program which aims to improve the state’s roads. “The work on Dennis Bridge across the Hastings River involved major repairs and maintenance of the structure to maintain capacity and reduce costs in the long term,” Mrs Williams said. “The bridge was also painted to remove corrosion, which is caused by a combination of salt water from the river, sea breeze and other factors.” Mrs Williams said the steel truss bridge built in 1961 has served the Port Macquarie community well and it’s important to maintain the crossing so it continues to meet local traffic demand once the new bridge over the Hastings River opens later this month.
Quartet in concert
THE final PhiloMusica concert for 2017 will feature a dynamic, young quartet of French Horn players from Sydney. The October 28 concert at the Kendall School Of Arts kicks off at 4pm after a 3pm pre-concert talk. The Shiraz Quartet was founded in 2016 and features Sydney-horn virtuosi Andrew London, Gemma Lawton, Pei Yin Xu and Sarah Morris. The quartet covers a range of repertoire and genres from Schumann to Hindemith, from transcriptions of classics to jazz. While being Sydney-based, the Shiraz Quartet often travels to experience different venues and areas. Their performance will be preceded by a pre-concert talk and discussion on the topic “Music and Nature”. Associate Professor Goetz Richter, founder of PhiloMusica, will explore the question how nature and music are related. Tickets for the PhiloMusica concert on October 28 can be obtained by email: info@ pentimento-northhaven.com or by calling Mavis Barnes 02-6559 4339.
Reforms make health insurance cheaper THE Turnbull Government has announced a wide-ranging package of reforms to make private health insurance simpler and more affordable for the people in Cowper. Nationals Member for Cowper Luke Hartsuyker said that every dollar matters to families on the Mid North Coast and these reforms will get better value for families and make policies easier to understand. “Private health insurance is an essential and valuable part of the Australia’s health system.” Mr Hartsuyker said. “We are encouraging younger Australians to take up private health insurance by allowing insurers to discount hospital insurance premiums for 18- to 29-year-olds by up to 10 per cent. The discount will phase out after people turn 40.” “People with hospital insurance that does not
offer full cover for mental health treatment will be able to upgrade their cover and access mental health services without a waiting period on a once-off basis. This will significantly enhance the value of private health insurance for young people.” “To support Australians in regional and rural areas, insurers will be able to offer travel and accommodation benefits for people in regional and rural areas that need to travel for treatment. This will be of significant benefit to people in Cowper.” “We know that many people would like to be able to select a higher excess in exchange for lower premiums. That’s why we will increase the maximum excess consumers can choose under their health insurance policies for the first time since 2001.”

Walking to good health THE warmer weather of spring provides a great incentive to get back outdoors and start walking and the support of the free Heart Foundation Walking program makes it even easier to do. The Mid North Coast Local Health District (MNCLHD) coordinates Heart Foundation Walking groups in the Kempsey, South West Rocks, Port Macquarie, Camden Haven, Wauchope and Stuarts Point areas. Local area coordinator for Heart Foundation Walking and MNCLHD Health Promotion Officer Yvonne Muyambi said walking groups were a great way to have fun, meet new people and look after your heart, and your mental health too. “Walking for just 30 minutes a day can help you maintain a healthy weight, increase fitness and strength, improve your self-esteem and mental health, control diabetes and reduce your risk of heart disease by almost half,” Ms Muyambi said. “Joining a Heart Foundation Walking group in your area can help you stay motivated to exercise .”

Stingers set for Big Bash debut THE McDonalds Premier Cricket League will take a break this weekend as Coffs Harbour hosts the ‘Regional Big Bash’ Twenty/20 round robin over Saturday and Sunday with each team playing three games. The competition is for all regional NSW sides with 16 teams playing off in four conferences. The winner of each conference will have the opportunity to play at the SCG. The Mid North Coast Cricket Council team is the ‘Macquarie Coast Stingers’. The team is selected from players in The McDonalds Premier League. With the team’s need for hard-hitting, fastscoring batsmen, economical bowlers and excellent fielders, the selectors were left with some tough decisions. Josh Hyde is the skipper, a player of quality with the bat and the ball. The players picked are a mixture of experienced and new. Chris Cole is a noted striker of the ball, as is Ben Scowen. The bowling attack will be spearheaded by pace ace Brendon Badenoch. Jesse Scmitt is a mean, tight bowler, and Sam Whitebread will certainly ‘hurry up’ a few batsmen. Tom Burley has a dual role, combining classic hitting with tight bowling, both pace and spin. Ben Taylor will provide the spin option with bighitting Ricky Campbell. Macquarie Stingers Big Bash squad for this weekend’s Regional Big Bash: Josh Hyde (Macquarie), Chris Cole (Macquarie), Ben Scowen (Wingham), Ricky Campbell (United), Tom Burley (United), Jessie Schmitt (Magpies), Scott Witchard (Kempsey Heights), Ryan Williams (Taree West), Jackson Korn (Rovers), Brendan Badenoch (Macquarie), Ben Taylor(Nulla), Sam Whitbbread (United), Zac Sheathed (United). The weekend will provide a feast of attacking cricket on both days. The team is coached by Dave Burley and managed by Matt Day.

WE know that Christmas is not far away when the President’s Big Bowl Pairs Tournament is played. This year 28 teams took to the greens on the weekend of the Oct 7-8 and only three teams registered four wins. John Hrabak and Matt Carter took first prize, Chris Ballam and Graham Conen second and John Williams and Phil Lindfield third. A few of the fittest bowlers fronted up again on Wednesday to contest the Classic Pairs and after the early morning rain it was a very different surface. Mark Hammond and Charlie Doyle took first prize, Gary Russell and Rick Lentini second and Kevin Byford and Gary Knox third. Thursday was washed out when the rain returned but social bowls on Monday was well attended. Max Heslehurst, Brian Pearce and Peter Harris were rink winners with Doug Rose, John White Jnr and Helene White the lucky losers. Dennis Smith and Harry Hicks were Saturday’s winners with Max Heslehurst and George Barnes lucky to lose. Sharon and Ray Stokmanis won through to the next round of the Mixed Pairs Championships defeating Pat Murphy and John Cree. It is always a fun day, three bowl triples, mufti dress with morning tea served at 0900 and a 0930 start. Locker fees are due so if you have not paid, see Kerry Deas and do so now please.

Small fleet for some fast racing THE Port Macquarie Sailing Club held the sixth race of the spring series on Sunday under mostly sunny skies in a nice little south-easter with a run-in tide. The three laps of mainly reaching made for quite a quick race, so it was a shame that so many members were away and missed the great conditions. Frank O’Rourke on Dino was the lone catamaran sailing, leaving him to take both yardstick and handicap points this week after being away sailing at Mannering Park at Lake Macquarie. First on yardstick in the monohull division was Paul Robertson and Martina Holt in Flembouyant, followed by Tony Walker in Crosariol, V. Daniels & P. Ward. Runners-up prize to K. Smith & J. Crisp Saturday saw the mixed four’s championship continue and the team of M. Hume, P. Ross, S. Moy & J. Scott def P. Ward, K. Sadler, N. Wright & J. Hallsworth. In the other game J. Sloan, P. Wright, K. Sweeney & K. Lowther def B. Fairhall, S. Wright, G. Milligan & J. Wright. In Sunday’s final J. Scott def K. Lowther. Great game very good bowls played by all.

THE annual KALITE Fours bowls tournament, with overall prizemoney of $5400, was held at the Kempsey Macleay RSL Bowling and Sporting Club on October 14-15. Twenty-four teams entered the event, which consisted of four games over the two days, with bowlers from up and down the coast playing for the prizemoney on offer. Saturday morning brought heavy dark clouds over the bowling greens before the event started. A deluge half an hour before the starting time caused a delay owing to the flooding of the greens. Organisers reduced the number of ends per game to 18 and the event finally commenced after an hour’s wait for the greens to dry. Team “H” and Team “S” finished the first game with a win and 13 ends giving them an overall total of 33e points. After a lunch break the teams went out for their second game for the day under a grey sky with a hint of blue. The rain held off and after some strong competition Team “H” finished the day as event leader. Paul Holden (Kempsey Heights) skipped the team to a three point overall lead, finishing on 66 points with Team “Z” (Paul Moon) overall second on 63. Sunday morning produced overcast but dry conditions for the commencement of game three. However, after a few ends of play, a short shower of rain causedanother halt. The morning game finished without any further delays and once the
Deep Purple, and young skipper Elsa Gandy with her new to sailing friend Caitlin in Flying Fish. Flying Fish took the handicap win ahead of Deep Purple and Flembouyant. At least the easy conditions for our club fleet left time for Simon Gandy in the safety boat to assist another sailor who was taking his first step out of monohulls and into a catamaran, but was having a few problems righting it after capsizes. Next Sunday is a double-header, with the next race of the spring series starting at 11am, a BBQ lunch, then the second Club Championship starting at 2pm. Ron Apps is rostered on duty.
cards were calculated, the overall leaders had changed. Team “X” (skip – Craig Donaldson) fought hard to defeat their opposition and with the points awarded became the leaders . The final game started off in bright sunshine but the players had to contend with yet another weather condition - wind. Adjusting and readjusting were the strategies as the conditions continued to change. The game and tournament finished without any further disruptions. After all teams handed their scorecards in, the results were tallied and the presentations made. The winners of the tournament with 4 game wins plus 44 ends making a total of 144 points were Team “X” – Dave Scrivener, Barry Smith, Greg Brims, and Craig Donaldson, Second with 3 game wins plus 40 ends, a total of 100 points were Team “W” – Michael Judd, Greg Powick, Richard Dickson and Chris Hazlewood There was a tie for third between Teams “M” and “O” both on 3 game wins plus 39 ends, a total of 99 points. Team “M” consisted of Trevor Lee, Richard Chabros, Trevor Gittoes and Don Forrest Team “O” was made up of Jim Hater, Neil Swain, John Kay and Mick King The Lucky Card for the last Game went to Team “H” - Roger Gill, Brett Stephens, Jarrod Wilson and Paul Holden. President of the Kempsey Macleay RSL Men’s Bowling Club, Ron Kennedy thanked the major sponsor , David Dyet, who has sponsored the KALITE event for the last 17 years.
