Fire danger ‘high’

DUE to extremely dry and windy conditions, fire permits in the Macleay Valley are currently suspended and the fire danger is high.

According to Lachlann Ison, Zone Manager Lower Mid North Coast, the fire rating will remain high until we get decent rain.

He said the drought index was back on 100, which indicated there wasn’t much moisture in the first 10 centimetres of the soil and there was also lots of fuel on the ground.

“The four main factors that create prefect bushfire conditions are temperature, relative humidity, wind strength and quantity of available fuel,” Mr Ison explained.

“We are monitoring conditions at the moment and until it rains we will continue to be on a high level of preparedness.”

Last month almost 5000 hectares were destroyed in the region when two bushfires tore through bushland threatening lives and property.

Between Saturday, November 5, and Monday, November 14, a Section 44 Declaration of the Rural Fires Act was issued for the region to help cover the costs of bringing in six aircraft, heavy earthmoving equipment, other fire crews, trucks and equipment, and accommodation costs.

Libraries to host Summer Reading Club

A BUILT-IN fire-fighting pump has strengthened fire-fighting capacity on the Hastings River.

The device, which can also be used to extract water, is the only one of its kind on the Hastings.

Aboard Marine Rescue Port Macquarie’s new $858,000 rescue boat it adds to the ability of emergency services to fight river-front house fires, Unit Commander Neil Yates said.

“We can fight fires from the water and even pump water to fire trucks if they need to fill up.”

The Port Macquarie Marina contributed $2500 toward the purchase of the pump in continuance of their long-standing informal partnership with the volunteer-run emergency service.

The association between the Marina and the rescue organisation was one of mutual assistance, Port Macquarie Marina manager Bill Oliver said.

“We facilitate each other’s work where we can,” he said.

Marine Rescue have use of berths if they rescue a boat and the Marina now has assistance with pumping water and fire-fighting, if needed.

“We are very happy that our donation has been used in this way,” Mr Oliver said.

Marine Rescue Port Macquarie had attended a couple of fires at sea in the past, its Unit Commander said.

But much more common than fires was boats taking on water, Mr Yates added.

“A lot of boats in the estuary sit there for long periods of time and begin to take on water.

“In the past we had to have four guys lug a pump on board and secure it, which is all time consuming.”

The built-in pump means the rescue organisation’s response time is now as fast as it can be.

MINISTER for Emergency Services David Elliott and Member for Port Macquarie Leslie Williams opened a new $215,000 Marine Rescue NSW training facility and boat shed in Harrington on the NSW Mid North Coast, last week.

“Members of the Crowdy/Harrington unit now have the benefit of a dedicated facility for their training activities,” Mr Elliott said.

“The training facility is equipped with integrated technology, a kitchen and amenities, as well as undercover protection for the unit’s response vessel, Crowdy 20, fuel utility and other equipment.”

Mr Elliott also honoured 48 volunteers from NSW State Emergency Service (NSW

SES) Mid-North Coast Region who received National Medals and Long Service Awards.

The recipients had more than 1,060 years of experience between them.

“These awards are in recognition of the outstanding efforts shown by these 48 members who have dedicated many years to volunteering in the SES,” he said.

SES Port Macquarie Hasting Unit received a ClubGRANTS of $34,900 to build a large outdoor shelter for sand bagging, training and storage.

SES Camden Haven Unit received a $5,000 grant for rescue equipment and water rescue dummies.

Mrs Williams paid tribute to the volunteers

in the Port Macquarie region for assisting the community during floods, storms and other emergencies.

“The local community can be assured that Marine Rescue NSW and SES are equipped to help them in a time of crisis,” she said.

“Their committed effort responding to emergencies are greatly respected in the community.”

In Mr Elliott’s capacity as the Minister for Veterans Affairs, he also awarded a $1,000 grant for the Crowdy Head War Memorial, which opened in 2002.

The funds will go toward replacing two flagpoles on either side of the memorial.

Vital funds for Marine Rescue training

UNLEASH your imagination these school holidays with the launch of the Summer Reading Club at Kempsey Shire libraries.

The themed program aims to encourage a continued love of reading and ongoing multiliteracy skills development in children and young people over the summer holiday period.

The program will launch at Kempsey, South West Rocks, Stuarts Point and Hat Head library branches on Thursday, December 1, and is open to children from pre-school to high school, who are current members of the library.

This year’s theme is Heroes and Villains and at the launch children will be able to decorate a library bag with their own individual design.

They will also receive a starter pack with their log sheet and an activity pack to start on their reading journey. There will be weekly prize draws as well as a major draw with two iPads up for grabs.

Librarian Mary Williams said Kempsey Shire libraries run the program each year to encourage young people to continue reading.

“It gives kids something fun to do over the summer holidays while helping them return to school in the New Year feeling more confident about reading,” she said.

The Summer Reading Club will be held right up until January 25.

The club is supported by FOLK (Friends of the Library Kempsey) who promote literacy programs in the Kempsey Shire. For information on the program and how to participate contact Kempsey Library on 6566 3210.

Fire danger ‘high’ • From Page 1 On that Saturday two fires roared into life.

The first one destroyed 100 hectares of private property between Crottys Lane and Spooners Avenue at Yarravel.

Black smoke from the largest fire between Kundabung and South Kempsey billowed high into the clear blue sky that afternoon and flames quickly spread across the dry ground, scorching 4700 hectares over a period of four days.

Lightning strikes caused two more bushfires upriver at Willi Willi and Five Day Creek a few days later.

A Police forensic team is still investigating the cause of the first two blazes.

Early last week two fires were burning up on Carrai Road and the local Rural Fire Service was working with Forestry and National Parks to get the blazes under control.

The real ‘success’ of refugee policies I OBJECT to the proposed law announced by Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull to ban asylum seekers and refugees who arrived by boat from ever entering Australia, and I call on Australians to fight and resist these unconscionable policies.

Since the reopening of detention camps outside Australia, in the remote pacific islands of Manus and Nauru, refugee boats have been intercepted by the Australian government and the asylum seekers in these boats trafficked to the islands and held hostage for the so-called joint political purpose of ‘deterring’ people smugglers.

Both major parties now contend that this policy has ‘worked’ and no more boats are arriving in Australia.

THE Port Macquarie-Hastings Council’s campaign for further massive rate rises and to make them permanent deserves a giant thumbs down! The council has decided, even before its biased ‘public consultation’ period has ended, to endorse the permanent special rate increase. The result will be, in just 4 years, an increase of over 14% on rates that are already higher than other councils. Permanent compounding increases will mean increases of over 40% in future. Because land values are higher in Port Macquarie the impact will be greater there but that is hidden. Why is there only one councillor calling for greater efficiency instead of massive rate increases? We should quickly and clearly respond to the council on council@pmhc.nsw.gov.au

Thumbs Up TO the Port Macquarie-Hastings Council employee who installed the new announcing system at the Port Macquarie Airport. They seem to have great pride in what he or she does. There should be more council employees like you.

However, it might be time to revisit the fine tuning of the system, people are likely to be complaining about the overly loud repetitive nature of the announcements. I noticed during the week people were being told by loudspeaker not to over stay the two-minute unloading zone, at the time there were no cars in the area. Don’t give up I’m sure you will get it right in the end.

SOMETIMES it’s a struggle to share stuff from my heart. Today, is one of those days. Not that I don’t have anything to write about. The problem is to condense one of the various novels in my head down to 240 words! So much to say, and so little space.

My life is a shambles and I’m about to be launched on another journey into the unknown. You know that place where you can nearly touch the light at the end of the tunnel, in fact, you can smell it and then the wheels fall off.

From here life dictates that you have two choices. Either fall in a total heap and have the world’s largest pity party, invite as many friends as possible and drag it out if you like. Alternatively, keep moving through the unknown and have random private pity parties, with one or two close friends and get your life back.

Option one is the easiest choice in the first instance. However, it’s a horrid place to claw your way out of in the long term.

Option two is by far the harder.

You will need Faith (Romans 8:28), prayer, then put your big girl pants on and face the world, one step at a time. Lean on your friends, don’t abuse them.

Just like snorkelling visibility will be clear some days and murky on others. At least you can spit out the shit! Happy snorkelling!

‘Walk a mile in my shoes’

By NIKALA SIM STEVE Bayliss had his first leg surgically removed when he was only six months old - his second leg was taken off 12 months ago.

The Wauchope man was born premature in 1957 and back then there was not the technology or knowledge there is today, he said.

“I got gangrene because I was fed intravenously into my feet.

“And I got my first prosthetic leg when I was one.”

Steve has been wheelchair-bound for the last year and found it very difficult.

“I am very independent so it has been hard to ask people to do things for me,” Steve said.

He is excited about the freedom his new prosthetic leg will provide but has a journey ahead to adjust to it.

Hunter Prosthetics and Orthotics Service’s Peter Bednar said the overall challenge with a prosthetic leg was to get used to uneven ground.

“The younger you are the more adaptable you become to disability,” Peter said.

“The older you get the harder it is to adapt to the obstacles you come across.”

These include uneven ground, slopes, steps, very steep ramps, grassed areas, gravel, sand and soft ground.

“If you have stability issues then as soon as you stand on one leg you want to hold on to something,” Peter said.

“The point is that we need to look at the possibility of more pathways to provide access for

disabled people.”

This includes people in wheelchairs and with trolleys and frames, he said.

Double-amputee Steve first spoke to Your Local Independent in March about accessibility issues he faced in his home town of Wauchope.

The 59-year-old is unable to enter many shops, has difficulty negotiating gutters and has nearly been skittled whilst on pedestrian crossings numerous times, he said.

“In my wheelchair I am at bonnet height and people just don’t slow down,” Steve said.

He is also unable to access his nearest wharf to go fishing because the access path ends in three steps, Steve said.

“There is so much stuff in the supermarket that I can’t reach – if no one is around what do you do?”

The Port Macquarie-Hastings Council is asking for community input to develop their Disability Inclusion Action Plan 2017 – 2021.

People with a disability, their friends, family, carers, and those with a keen interest are asked to provide their ideas on how to make our towns more inclusive.

“If you don’t let council know then nothing’s going to change,” accessibility advocate Steve said.

“It’s no good to have an attitude of stick your head in the sand and she’ll be right.

“Until you’ve walked in the shoes of someone with a disability you don’t know what it’s like.”

By NIKALA SIM IF you’ve ever pulled on a boot in service of our country then you are invited to join a fun and supportive local group.

NSW National Servicemen’s Association Port Macquarie Sub Branch want anyone who has served – from those who have seen action to those who train as reserves, to become members of their group.

In the mid 1990s the navy and air force had viable ex-service organisations in Port Macquarie, WWII veteran Charles Edmondson said, but there was nothing for people who had been called up into national service.

He appealed, through the Port Macquarie Sub Branch of the RSL, for National Servicemen to come forward with the view of forming a Sub Branch of the National Servicemen’s Association of Australia.

Vic and Betty Fig, Pat and Charles Edmondson, Henry Hogno, Faye Carter, Bernie and Joan Power, Carmel and Denis Dick were the first to meet in the name of the new group which formalised in 1999.

The Port Macquarie Nashos are now keen to embrace more people who have served.

“Everyone is welcome,” 90-year-old Charles Edmonson said.

“Life’s too short and none of us is getting any younger so we must let bygones be bygones.”

Members of the group have diverse national service backgrounds.

Mr Edmonson served in the signal corps during both war and peace time.

Gum Scrub dairy farmer George Lugg went into the army aged 18 in 1952.

He was lucky enough to never fight a war, the 83-year-old said.

His service was in the assault pioneers.

Retiring member Graham Smith said he is the token Kiwi of the group which he joined a decade ago.

He performed National Service in New Zealand.

“There’s an awful lot of women’s groups around but not a lot of men’s groups,” Mr Smith said.

“It’s really good to talk about men’s issues and men’s problems – not that we do that each time we meet.

“The laughs we’ve had are amazing and everyone relates to a funny story.”

trips including visits to the Outback Spectacular, My Fair Lady and Myall Lakes.

But it is the friendship, understanding, support and camaraderie that binds them together.

“That’s what I’m going to miss,” said Mr Smith who is off to Tasmania.

“I would urge any bloke that’s ever pulled on a boot to come along and join a meeting.”

The NSW National Servicemen’s Association Port Macquarie Sub Branch met at McInherney Park in Port Macquarie recently, to hold a service at the National Service Memorial, and to present Life Membership awards to Charles Edmondson and Les Pearson.

“We are mindful of the memorial plaque and all of those who it honours for their dedication,” member Bert George said.

Associate membership is open to those who have been involved in Community Service which includes, but not limited to, ambulance, firemen and police.

The group meet on the first Tuesday of each month at 10am and all Nashos and their partners are welcome.

WRIGHTS Road roundabout slip lane open: Motorists driving along the Oxley Highway will notice improved traffic flow at the Wrights Road roundabout in Port Macquarie with the new slip lanes now open.

The completion of the slip lanes at the intersection of Wrights Road, John Oxley Drive and the Oxley Highway was a major milestone for the $3 million project, which has been delivered on time and on budget.

Work started in May to build the slip lanes and install traffic lights on the eastbound leg of the roundabout.

The slip lanes have been designed to improve traffic flow in and out of Wrights Road, particularly during peak periods by enabling motorists to turn in or out of Wrights Road without delays caused by traffic queued at the roundabout.

The project is in line with Port MacquarieHastings Council’s future vision for John Oxley Drive and will be complete when the traffic lights are switched on within the next two weeks.

Traffic modeling showed traffic lights on the eastbound leg of the roundabout would make traffic flow easier from Wrights Road and John Oxley Drive.

These lights will only operate when traffic starts queuing past a certain point on John Oxley Drive.

Roads and Maritime will continue to work with Port Macquarie-Hastings Council on a range of long-term traffic studies designed to improve council’s local road network.

More support for pool safety campaign: With the warmer weather now here, the NSW Government is increasing its support for a summer advertising blitz about backyard pool safety.

Active adult supervision of young children is the first line of defence against drowning in backyard pools. Royal Lifesaving NSW’s campaign, with increased NSW Government support, will drive home this important message.

The increased support for the campaign formed part of the NSW Government’s response to the Independent Review of Swimming Pool Regulation. The review made 62 recommendations that required extensive analysis and careful consideration.

MORE than 30 years ago Jill Bishton followed the words of Australia’s first saint, Mary MacKillop: ‘If you see a need, go for it’.

Today that need is still there and hundreds of local women have Jill to thank for living better lives. “(In the 1970s) My daughter came home from school at Wauchope High, telling me that there were girls at school who thought they were pregnant,” said Jill. “I thought okay, so what are we going to do about it? And Mary MacKillop always said ‘If you see a need, go for it’.”

So that’s what she did and several years later that work resulted in Jill founding ‘Port Macquarie Pregnancy Help’ in 1988, which later became ‘Pregnancy Help Midcoast’.

In November she was officially recognized and rewarded for a lifetime of vital community achievement.

Her organization received the ‘Best Pregnancy Support in Regional, Rural, and Remote NSW’ award at the ‘Inaugural Pregnancy Support Awards Dinner’ in Sydney.

Pregnancy Help Midcoast won the award ‘for their efforts in assisting women facing an unplanned pregnancy in low populated areas or isolated locations, whilst initiating services that

benefit these women living in such locations.’

The organisation has a far wider reach. They also help women who have gone through the struggles associated with abortion.

“We had one lady who found us while we were having a committee meeting,” Jill says.

“She had an abortion 18 months prior and went to the doctor as she felt terrible because of the grief. The doctor said that she ‘should be over it by now’, and so then he sent her to community health and they said the same thing.

“Then she found our sign and came and saw us. She spoke with our psychologist for eight counseling sessions and worked through it. The last time she came, she brought a big bunch of flowers.”

Jill has shared many great success stories over the years, but there is still more to be done.

“There are not many support centres like ours out in the country,” said Jill. “There certainly is a need for it out here, especially for the girls at

school who might just need someone to talk to.

“Sometimes pregnant women ring us to get some money (for abortions), because they don’t get enough money from Medicare,” explained Jill. “But we can’t give them the money because we are here to support mothers and babies and even grandparents and young girls.

“There are also a lot of other organisations that help women who decide to go back to study.

It’s very important that these girls realise that even though they are pregnant or a mum, they can do anything.”

Pregnancy Help Midcoast is located at West Kempsey. Through its 1300 telephone number it provides a 24-hour, seven-days-a-week support service. It also offers face-to-face appointments, home and hospital visits and provides material support and assistance. It undertakes its own fundraising activities.

Don’t leave kids, pets alone in cars NRMA patrols have rescued 2243 babies and 1655 pets in the past 12 months from locked cars across NSW and the ACT. Thirty-three per cent of rescues were at shopping centre car parks, while many others were in community areas like beaches, parks or hospitals.

Over the last 12 months more than 110 rescues occurred outside bottle shops, pubs, clubs or gambling venues.

NRMA Roadside Manager Robert Younes said it was never okay to leave a child or pet unattended in a vehicle, no matter how quick you thought you might be.

“Sometimes members don’t realise their children or pets have been locked in the car until after they return from quickly popping into a shop to fetch something, pay for fuel or run an errand,” Mr Younes said.

“The car is not a substitute babysitter, even leaving the window partially open is no solution as it won’t stop the temperature rising inside the car, while leaving the keys in the ignition to keep the air conditioning going is even more dangerous because the car might get stolen.

“On any typical day the temperature inside a car can quickly become 30 or 40 degrees hotter than the outside temperature. Even on a mild day, that rapid temperature rise might be fatal.

“A child left in a parked car under those conditions can very quickly become distressed, dehydrated and can die from organ failure.

“Animals shouldn’t be treated differently – dogs and cats can’t sweat to cool themselves so they can develop heat stroke and die very quickly in hot conditions,” Mr Younes said.

Over the past year, it has taken the NRMA an average of less than 14 minutes to arrive at the scene of locked car with a baby inside.

People who see a child locked in a car should call NRMA immediately on 13 11 11 or call 000. If the child is distressed do not wait for help instead, smash a window and remove the child from the vehicle.”

How long have you lived in or around the Hastings/Macleay?

I lived in Crescent Head for a couple of years as a kid and moved to the Hastings in 2004.

What do you love most about the Hastings/ Macleay?

So many things! The forest, which you could learn about all your life and still hardly scratch the surface. The network of creeks and rivers that link everything together. I love that it’s too far north to be full of Sydney commuters and too far south to be influenced by the Byron Bay culture. The Pappinbarra community is pretty unique and wonderful too.

Where do you work and what do you love about your work?

I’m self employed as One Off Makery, designing puppets and stuff on commission for theatre companies in capital cities. I also run Frugal Arts Inc, along with a committee of wonderful women. Work is always creative and challenging. I’m learning all the time.

What do you like least about your work?

The mountain of admin! And the instability can get a little wearing. Working as a professional artist, there’s no such thing as sick pay, super, union representation, holiday leave, or knowing if you’ll have a gig a year from now.

But I’ve worked like that for 20 years and most days I wouldn’t swap it for the world.

How do you start your day?

Roll out of bed, tend to the dog and start making school lunches. Not very glamorous!

What do you do in your spare time?

Umm … emails? And exploring the forest, hunting for orchids: my kids are obsessed with them and have made mental maps of the ones that will soon flower, so we have to check up on them.

What is the achievement you are most proud of?

Pride makes me uncomfortable: it feels like a perilous perch, and the come-down is awful.

I’d much rather hear interested, useful critique than congratulations. I think my kids are marvellous, but they are their own achievements.

This month marks 10 years since the first Australian Government Mobile Service Centre hit the road to visit regional communities with limited access to government services.

First launched as a converted Winnebago in 2006, the service has since evolved into a pair of sleek, high-tech, nationally touring mobile offices equipped to deliver the same Centrelink and Medicare services as any other Department of Human Services Service Centre.

Over the past decade these Mobile Service Centres have covered almost 700,000 kilometres, helped over 120,000 customers, visited more than 3800 towns and been deployed to 20 disaster situations.

The 10-year milestone was a fabulous achievement for the well-loved travelling outreach service.

For the past decade the mobile service centres have been a touchstone to government support for Australians living in regional and rural areas.

Having a face-to-face service that helps people access both financial and social work support is critically important for ensuring all Australians get the help they’re entitled to.

The travelling service has also been particularly vital in the aftermath of natural disasters – when they can be quickly relocated to provide emergency on-the-ground support.

Mobile offices had been a popular visiting service through our electorate over the past decade.

A mobile service centre always generates a lot of business when it pulls up in town. Along with the usual Centrelink and Medicare services, we’ve also seen a lot of interest in recent years from people wanting help to sign-up to and use online self-service options like MyGov. A sauce that has spread world-wide my

I WAS watching television the other night when a contestant was given four versions of Worcestershire and had to pick the one with the correct spelling.

I think the word the contestant picked was wrong.

I remembered the episode because we had a lot of people at our house and I think our supply of Worcestershire sauce dropped to alarming proportions. I can remember somebody saying “Do we have any Worcestershire sauce?”

A few days later my wife and I went into a grocery store and I chose a brand we hadn’t had before.

Worcestershire sauce is different from your run-of-the-mill tomato sauce or other type of sauce. The sauce takes its name from Worcester, the ‘capital’ of Worcestershire.

Worcestershire is a county on the west midlands of England, roughly slightly west of a line between London and Liverpool.

The main ingredients of the sauce in the early stages, at least, have been barley malt vinegar, spirit vinegar, molasses, sugar, salt, anchovies, tamarind extract, onions and garlic. Sometimes other bits have been added.

I don’t know who put all those bits together for consumption, but I consider he was a brave man when he, whoever he was, took his first gulp.

Some people say rotten fish has been involved but I would like to think that goes back to the early days. These days more hygienic methods are used.

The history of a similar sauce goes way back to the Roman empire. A brand was commercialised in 1837 and the original label said the sauce came from ‘the recipe of a nobleman in the county’.

Was that an attempt to boost sales? Various interpretations have been put on that.

The company said this particular sauce came from India, but some attempts to check the facts produced many doubts.

How it came to England has produced many theories. The label on a 1900 bottle said: “All dishes such as soups, fish, meat, gravy, game, salads etc are doubly appetizing and digestible when flavoured with…”

Even sandwiches and alcoholic drinks have been involved. The sauce is said to come from

a curry powder in a desk belonging to Mrs Grey, author of The Gambler’s Wife.

John Wheeley Lea and William Henry Perrins tried to make the curry into a sauce, but they considered the finished produce was far too strong for human consumption. They put it aside and a few years later discovered the sauce had fermented and was now palatable, so they released the sauce to the public in 1838. Their company was later sold, and many companies now produce Worcestershire sauce Lea and Perrins made their fortune and no longer have the sole rights to the sauce.

Several companies make the sauce in Australia.

The sauce is also made in many countries.

Henry Fielding, writing Tom Jones, said in 1749: “They found no fault with my Worcestershire Perry, which I sold them for champagne.” Maybe he received champagne in return for some bottles of sauce.

In the USA the recipe is different and I am told the bottles are wrapped in paper, but the producer claims the sauce is the oldest commercially bottled condiment in the US. Local artist inspired by nature

By SUE PATERICK MACLEAY Valley artist Mark Pryor’s greatest influences are nature’s four elements of fire, water, air and earth.

He has held a number of exhibitions over the years depicting these elements, but for the past 12 months he has been working on artworks for his upcoming exhibition with a focus on fire and rain.

Mark chose these two elements because they are powerful enough to change emotions.

After watching last month’s fires in the Macleay, he was left in awe of nature’s power and fury. But it was the Black Saturday bushfires in Victoria back in 2009 when 170 people lost their lives that moved him the most.

“It made me realise how small and insignificant people are in the face of such power,” Mark said.

“There is just nothing anyone could do and that had a huge emotional impact on me.”

Once he overcame the fire’s destructive power, he saw there was beauty there too.

“After the destruction there is also rebirth and fire is very much part of the cycle of life in the bush,” Mark said.

“The light intensity attracted me too, as did the glow effect and luminescence.”

For Mark his work is all about colours and fire glows and expresses energy, power, action

Nature moves artist Mark Pryor who will feature artworks depicting fire and rain in his upcoming exhibition at Gladstone and movement.

He has tried to capture its beauty and not its terror.

Water also inspires Mark’s artworks.

“We are 80 per cent water and live on a planet mostly covered by water so water has a huge impact on our emotions,” he explained.

He is fascinated about how emotions change in storms, rain deluges and droughts.

“Water comes from a variety of different forms and water means so many things to us, whereas fire is almost linear in its power,” Mark explained.

As fire and rain are environmental elements, all of Mark’s artworks are landscape-based and some will feature local scenes of places such as Toorumbee Creek, Crescent Head and the Macleay’s glorious hinterland.

Mark uses pastels, water colours and oils because it allows him to approach his subject in three different ways.

Mark’s Fire and Rain exhibition will run at the Macleay Valley Community Art Gallery in Gladstone from Thursday, December 8, until Sunday, December 18.

Opening night is on Friday, December 9, from 6.30pm.

Strategic planning key to growth PRO-ACTIVE, responsive and inventive strategic planning for the future is critical to the growth and development of the local economy, a positive quality of life and not least jobs creation.

Strategic planning can come in many forms across a number of areas including planning for infrastructure, workforce structure and resourcing and also in development controls and finance.

Over the last four years in particular the Port Macquarie Hastings LGA has seen an overall slowing in delivery of major projects, cost overruns on key projects and an increasing backlog of capital works and road maintenance.

At present the stockpiling of millions of dollars of ratepayer and taxpayer funds and a relaxed or reactive approach to infrastructure planning and delivery are warning signs that not

all is sweet at the moment.

The Port Macquarie Hastings local government area has more potential than many other coastal regions in Australia and can truly become an economic and social powerhouse – with the right strategic planning and genuine leadership, starting with council.

The trick will be in convincing the council to move away from the buearacratic process blocking the pipeline of works and delivery.

Council needs to pull their finger out and map out the future infrastructure needs of the LGA, make delivery a priority and actually try to work with the NSW State Government in moving whatever mountains are needed to deliver for the community.

When it comes to roads and infrastructure delivery in particular, at present the council is for whatever reason micro-managing the whole process of pre-construction through to completion. This approach is incredibly slowgoing but particularly slow within a normally inefficient beast that is a local council.

“They really are works of art.”

particular projects for the first time ever and learning along the way which also bogs down the process and often ends in cost-blowouts and massive time delays.

In a period of time when there a number of large-scale organisations delivering the much needed improvements to the Pacific Highway, it’s now that council needs to engage specialist support in delivering some of the most important roads and infrastructure projects such as Lake Road upgrades to dual lanes each way, Ocean Drive and the very much needed University Drive. THE first in a series of community workshops will be held in Crescent Head early next month, to assist Kempsey Shire Council with the preparation of the Crescent Head Integrated Master Plan.

Bring the kids for a real Hoot

Port Macquarie is about to get a dose of Giggle and Hoot humour

ON-STAGE Giggle and Hoot are their television show times 100, presenter Jimmy Rees says.

The 29-year-old is the much-loved Jimmy Giggle from ABC Kids Giggle and Hoot show.

Together with offsiders Hoot, Hootabelle, Pirate Hootbeard and Hootoclaws he works hard to make education of preschoolers fun.

“I’m enjoying myself and having a great time,” he says of the starring role he has performed for the last seven years.

“It’s a really lovely little show to work on.”

Part of the beauty of the program is the collaborative process of its production, Jimmy says.

“We record as many segments as we can two days a week.

“Each one is heavily scripted so we have to learn our lines on the floor before each shoot.”

This keeps delivery fresh, Jimmy Giggle says, and sometimes makes him feel like he is experiencing his lines for the first time.

This spontaneity is the essence of the show, he says, and one of the reasons why it translates so well to the stage.

“The live shows are great because the kids get to meet the real Jimmy Giggle and the real Hoot.”

The father of one gets a real buzz from audience feedback.

“It is so much fun you can’t imagine,” Jimmy says.

The kids sing along to songs and when they call out he gets the opportunity to respond.

“The balance between recorded and live shows helps keep the spark alive,” he says.

On Tuesday, December 13, Giggle and Hoot will bring the Magic of Christmas to Port Macquarie’s Glasshouse.

Their one-hour show tells the story of Giggle, Hoot and friends in the lead up to Christmas Night Watch.

Williams welcomes funding to stop DV

Curtain call for popular local choir

THIS Sunday will mark an end of an era when the Wednesday a cappella Choir, pictured, perform for the last time.

For the past eight years this talented choir has held concerts to raise funds for cancer research and palliative care.

The choir, who sing like angels, perform a varied repertoire from jazz to gospel.

Member, Deb Rownes, said they all sing

because they love to.

Her fellow members are founder and singing teacher Port Macquarie’s Elly Franchimont, John Ausburn, Sylvia Scott, Gianna Douglas, Pam Scanlon, Louise Finnegan and Judy Holingsworth.

They will perform at the Oddfellows Hall at 22 Kemp Street West Kempsey on Sunday December 4 from 2 to 4pm.

“We love to sing at the Oddfellows Hall because the acoustics are really superb,” Deb said.

The Yarrahapinni Choir and various friends will join the Wednesday choir’s last show.

Afternoon tea will be provided and the cost is $5 per person.

All funds will go to the Macleay Valley Home Hospice.

MEMBER for Port Macquarie, Leslie Williams has welcomed a NSW Government grant of $1000 to the Port Macquarie Hastings Domestic Violence Committee, as part of the 2016 Local Domestic and Family Violence Committee Grants which supports projects that raise awareness about domestic and family violence.

Mrs Williams said that the grant provides assistance to the invaluable work of the Committee for the staging of this Sunday’s White Ribbon Walk.

“The event has grown to attract more than 500 participants with the support of local men’s groups and private businesses,” she said.

“The event sends a strong message that violence against women will not be tolerated and is the responsibility of the whole community to address.

“This grant helps raise local awareness about the devastating impact of domestic and family violence, reinforce messages about positive behaviours and increase awareness of services available in our area.”

The project is being supported as part of local initiatives to coincide with 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence, which commenced with White Ribbon Day on Friday, November 25, and runs until December 10.

Minister for the Prevention of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Pru Goward said: “The NSW Government is proud to support the work of domestic and family violence committees in promoting the importance of domestic and family violence prevention in local communities.

“The NSW Government is leading the nation in tackling domestic violence by continuing to support victims while putting perpetrators in the centre of the frame.”

Mrs Williams said, “I encourage all members of the local community to get involved with the White Ribbon Walk.”

Service comforts suicide ‘survivors’ THE Mid North Coast will be coming together to celebrate the lives of those lost to suicide.

Lifeline Mid Coast is extending an invitation to all those touched by suicide to attend this nondenominational Memorial Service at Windmill Hill on Friday, December 23.

The memorial service provides a space for people to remember a loved one lost to suicide, the happy times and the laughter, as well as those times when life was hard.

Surviving suicide loss can feel like having a heartache that no one can heal, but by looking back in memory, the memorial service can be a comfort.

It gives permission for grieving, it allows acknowledgement of the pain, in a wellsupported environment with others who have the shared experience as suicide survivors.

When someone dies by suicide, those bereaved often experience a very complicated form of grief caused by a combination of sudden shock, unanswered questions of ‘Why?’ and feelings of ‘What could I have done?’

They may also experience a range of emotions highlighting the dramatic personal effect suicide can have and the important but difficult task of helping someone bereaved by suicide.

For those dealing with the suicide of someone they love, it’s important to feel free to talk about the reactions to suicide openly and honestly, to find support, to make sense of what has happened and deal with the grief.

This annual Memorial Service for ‘survivors’, the term used for those who are bereaved by suicide, will take place just south of Oxley Beach at Windmill Hill Reserve, Port Macquarie from 6pm to 7pm.

Christmas is an especially hard time for those touched by suicide and Windmill Hill Reserve is a beautiful spot to go to reflect and wander among memories, especially if the loved one’s resting place is not local.

Celebrate the life of your loved one and leave knowing you’re not alone, on Friday December 23 at 6 pm at the Lifeline Mid Coast Memorial Service at Windmill Hill.

THE Byabarra community has again showed its generosity by making a $1500 donation to the Mid North Coast Cancer Institute at Port Macquarie.

The donation was possible thanks to support for the Byabarra Community Hall Trust’s Beer Appreciation Evening in October.

Trustee Brian Carpenter said the annual event was always well supported by Hastings residents and sponsors, but this year’s fundraiser had a special significance.

“We made the decision this year, however, to donate the money raised on the night to the Mid North Coast Cancer Institute in memory of Kate

Owen, who with husband Al owned and operated the Black Duck Brewery, a long-time sponsor of our Beer Appreciation Evenings.

“Kate sadly passed away in August and we wanted to honour her memory by showing support for other cancer patients from throughout the Hastings.”

Mr Carpenter passed on thanks to Black Duck Brewery, The Little Brewery Company, Hunter Beer Co., Murray’s Brewery, Coopers Brewery, Stone and Wood Brewing, Asahi, Cellarbrations at the Settlers Inn, IGA Wauchope (Timbertown) and IGA Liquor.

Jann shares European influence Byabarra Hall helps out cancer patients LOCAL Macleay Valley potter, Jann Kesby, travelled to Europe and the USA this year for inspiration for her ceramics.

The ceramic history of Spain and Portugal enthralled Jann, as did the many tiles, facades and ceramic vessels both countries had to offer.

The intricate tile work is reminiscent of the Moors who occupied both countries for 300 years, and were themselves influenced by the Arabs.

In Sierra Nevada in California Jann joined geologists climbing mountains and looking at raw materials and their history.

To give her work a more home-grown look and feel, Jann has been collecting local clays and materials.

Her annual Christmas sale will be held on Saturday, December 3, and Sunday, December 4, from 10am to 4pm.

To get to her studio drive one kilometre along the Crescent Head Road, take a right into Pattersons Lane and then a left into Lily Lane and follow the flags.

Port champ powers to victory PERFECT weather and fast racing conditions resulted in a successful NSW Outrigger championship regatta in Port Macquarie last weekend.

Paddlers from as far afield as Mollymook on the South Coast travelled to compete in the 2016/17 State titles for single (OC1) and double (OC2) canoes.

Veteran paddler and founding member of the Port Macquarie Maroro Outrigger Club, Kevin Owens, led the local charge with victory in the Golden Master OC1 short course event.

Perhaps better known in local sporting circles for his surf boat rowing achievements, Owens made the most of his local knowledge to finish the 10km course in 1hr, 4mins, 45.

“When I found out that we’d be hosting the

regatta in Port Macquarie, I thought it would be worth having a go in my division,” Owens said.

The blue riband event at the regatta, the OC1/2 long course, was run in perfect downwind conditions, with a 20km/h north-easterly giving paddlers a flying run from Point Plomer to the Hastings River mouth.

Sydney paddler Nathan Purll was first across the finish line at Lady Nelson Wharf, completing the 17km course in 1hr, 12mins, 28.

Angus Matthews from the Northern Beaches Club collected the Master Men’s gold medal, while Peter Williams from Port Hacking won the Senior Master Men’s division, completing a Sydney clean sweep.

Newcastle veterans Stephen Dawes and Lindsay Freeman paddled the first OC2 across the line.

TUESDAY, November 22 Single Stroke BiMonthly Medal event saw 123 players and guests on the green.

A grade was won by Rod Millican with an incredible nett 61, runner-up Neil Gavin with nett

businesses that supported the regatta with donations of prizes, equipment and other inkind support.

“Unfortunately, you don’t see as many local paddlers in the medals because they were all busy working as timekeepers, first aid officers, safety boat marshals and in various other roles.

“However, hosting a regatta provides us with a great opportunity to showcase our sport to the local community and to bring some of Australia’s best paddlers to our region.”

Newman said the club’s next racing target would be the Pasha Dasha regatta at Newcastle in January.

“We won the mixed division at this event last year so we’re looking forward to trying to defend our title,” she said.

B grade was won by Tony Ward with 67 nett on a c/b from runner-up Victor Riley also with nett 67. In third place was Fred Bridge with nett 68 on a c/b. C grade was won by Ted Sala with nett 63 from Barry Sligar with a nett 65.

NTP comp saw Rod Millican take out A grade on the 4th hole with 1.86m.

B grade went to John Schubert with 5.79m and C grade was won by Norm Smith with 2.38m.

On the 18th hole, A grade went to Gary Duncan with 1.46m B grade was won by Fred Bridge with 4.32m and C grade went to Eric Drury with 10.5m.

On the 7th hole, NTP across the field was won

by Mick Ashley with 2.42m.

In the ball comp balls went down to nett 70 in A grade, nett 71 on a c/b in B grade and nett 72 on a c/b in C grade. Overall this gave 36 players a bonus ball each.

PORT MACQUARIE

SUNDAY Patron’s Match Play Championship: long-term pennant team captain Dave Bagust did battle with the youthful Rowan Cooper.

Bagust went to an early three holes lead but Cooper found his swing just before the turn.

He was three under par from the 8th hole to the end of the match following birdies at the 8th, 10th and 12th holes and pars at the rest.

Cooper won the 10th, 12th, 13th and 14th holes and both players made great recoveries to halve the 15th hole in pars.

At the 16th hole Cooper put his tee shot in the bunker while Bagust was on the green. Cooper got up and down from the bunker while Bagust three putted for Cooper to win his first Patron’s Championship three and two.

This was the third consecutive year that Bagust had been the runner up and he had twice previously won the event, in 2001 and 2007.

In A reserve grade, Mick Couper had a three and two win over Andrew Goulding, while Iain McKinlay was too strong for Jeremy Tydd in B grade, winning seven and five.
