Local jobs boost 20 new positions as Wauchope business expands

THE local employment market will receive a major boost today (Thursday, February 1) with the planned announcement of 20 new jobs in Wauchope. The Federal Coalition Government’s North Coast Jobs and Investment package will provide a further boost to the Hastings economy with the announcement that a Wauchope manufacturer’s proposed expansion project will be supported to create 20 local jobs. Announcing the successful project under the first round of the Coalition’s regional-specific job creation initiative, Federal Member for Lyne Dr David Gillespie said Wauchope’s Food Machines Australia (FMA) would expand its operations in Production Drive. “I’d like to take this opportunity to congratulate FMA at Wauchope on pressing ahead with its expansion plans. The local company manufactures industrial scale food processing machinery and trans-critical CO2 refrigeration condensers. It has outgrown its current manufacturing activities and now requires additional space to meet increasing demand for the company’s products,” Dr Gillespie said. “This project will see the construction of a new factory on a greenfield site secured by FMA in the immediate vicinity of existing operations in Wauchope. • Continued Page 3

Wauchope business expands

The Hastings Choristers need more male singers. Some of their current performers are pictured, from left, Chris Clarke, Glenn Moore, John Burman, Hedley Harwood, Paul Groeneveld and John Thompson.

Exciting year planned for Hastings Choristers

By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC THE Hastings Choristers are planning a busy and exciting 2018. The talented group of local performers are welcoming new and old members to their first rehearsal night of the year on February 5. “We have another big year ahead of us and we’d love to have some new members as a part of it,” said Robyn Ryan, Musical Director for the Hastings Choristers. “At our first rehearsal we usually get someone to look after the new members and guide them through the rehearsal. We encourage people who are interested to just come along for a few weeks no charge - as we just want them to come and see if they like what we do and what we sing.” The group’s first performance for the year,

‘Requiem’ by Gabriel Faure, will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the battle of Villers Bretonneux, which took place in France on April 24, 1918. It was there that the Allies, including a large contingent of Australian soldiers won a historic battle against the Germans. “It’s a 30-minute concert with such wonderful music and it is sure to be a favourite of most choral singers,” said Robyn. “I’ve visited the village of Villers Bretonneux and the connection to Australia is huge. They still have a big sign over there saying, ‘Don’t forget Australia’.” The Hastings Choristers meet every Monday in the school term and will also perform a ‘Bright and Breezy’ jazz concert, a ‘Choral Kaleidoscope’ concert, and a fundraising concert throughout the year.

“The ‘Choral Kaleidoscope’ concert is great because we invite lots of local choirs to come and sing with us,” Robyn said. “We love having new women and men in our choir, but we do always fall short of males, so we’d love to have more join us.” Come along and see if the Hastings Choristers is the choir for you on Monday February 5 at the MacKillop Senior College Hall, Lochinvar Place, Port Macquarie from 6.30pm-8.30pm. The Hastings Choristers will also be welcoming talented pianist Jonathon Hingston as their accompanist. For further information visit the Hastings Choristers Facebook page @Hastings Chorister Inc or www.midcoast.com.au/~choristers/ or contact Robyn Ryan on 0407 007 993.

• From Page 1 “This initiative will lead to more than 20 local jobs, the development of a more highly skilled workforce and the expansion of high value manufacturing the area. “Additionally, the company intends to bring in-house, some of its manufacturing processes that are currently outsourced to other regions, providing further jobs opportunities in the future.” Dr Gillespie said the Federal Coalition Government had increased its investment in key sectors of the local economy. “We have already been investing in a number of important initiatives designed to generate more jobs in the region and this is another important layer in this process. “Our record investment in aged care locally, the expansion of funding into regional infrastructure projects, roads and bridges and the tax cuts and employment assistance measures for small businesses are all important to the work we are doing at the Federal level to get our region’s economy moving.” Dr Gillespie said submissions to the North Coast Jobs and Investment package initiative had been highly competitive and he was hopeful a further round of funding would be made available to support further projects in the future. “This is a great initiative that is helping to create hundreds of direct and indirect jobs in our electorate, and I’m so pleased our region has done so well in this first round of projects, particularly this project here in Wauchope,” he added.

New DV program is coming By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC A KEY program to help reduce domestic violence is coming to this region. Lifeline Mid North Coast is introducing the new Domestic Violence Alert program for frontline volunteers and anyone in the community. “It’s like first aid training in domestic violence,” said Kelly Saidey, Lifeline Telephone Crisis Support Officer. “It’s handy for people in work places where they may see or come across domestic violence, especially for people in social work, and it’s also for people who feel they may come across it in their day-to-day activities.”

Domestic violence includes physical harm as well as emotional harm, such as a person trying to control someone close to them, make them feel afraid, or unsafe. “We have definitely noticed more calls dealing with domestic violence recently,” said Kelly. “What we are finding is that people are calling up in domestic violence situations that they don’t actually realise they are in. We are also finding that it’s not just a male and female case, there are culture and gender barriers, and those people quite often find it hard to speak out about their situation.” One in three Australian women will experience domestic violence at some point in their lives and in most cases it is not reported to

the police. Domestic violence is also the leading cause of premature death for women aged 15-44. Lifeline Mid North Coast currently has between 80 and 90 volunteers working on the Telephone Crisis lines. Participants of the Domestic Violence Alert two-day face-to-face workshop will receive a Statement of Attainment CHCDV001. “I’m excited to bring the Domestic Violence Alert program to this region, because it’s a world class training program,” said Kelly. “Better still it’s funded by FASCIA and therefore cost neutral to participants”. The two-day face-to-face participatory workshop will be held in Wauchope on February 21 and 22 at the Wauchope RSL Club from 9am-

5pm. Domestic Violence Alert is government funded, so the training fee is waived for frontline workers to attend the course. Participants who complete the training are provided with support for travel, accommodation and staff backfill. Domestic Violence Alert is a key initiative of the National Plan to Reduce Violence against Women and their Children 2010-2022. To register for the program, please phone Di Bannister from Lifeline Mid Coast on 6581 2800. Climate change proof THE article ‘A year of climate extremes’ by Sue Paterick reminds us that climate change is real, with more frequent and intense weather events and years of record-breaking heat. I hope the article has convinced some of the die-hard doubters that climate change is threatening our planet and imperils life itself. For too long action to limit climate change has been stymied by decades of climate denial, using twisted logic to explain away the clear evidence that human activity has changed the earth’s climate. Some of Australia’s closest allies including the UK, New Zealand and Canada have joined 19 countries to phase out international coal consumption. Unsurprisingly Australia didn’t sign up. The federal government is unashamedly committed to coal at a time when the world is moving rapidly towards renewable energy. This government’s lack of policy is holding us back and having a damaging impact on renewables investment. The Turnbull government recently announced $60 million towards the preservation and protection of the Great Barrier Reef which is much needed and most welcome. The reef needs all the help it can get. But if we

are to have any hope of preserving a safe climate and the reef we have to phase out the burning of coal. How are we to make sense of this government’s proposed changes to remove large areas of marine sanctuaries to allow drilling, mining and let in foreign super trawlers to decimate areas like the Coral Sea, the cradle of the Great Barrier Reef. This represents the largest removal of protection for Australian wildlife in our history. Peter Van Haeff Bellbrook

WOW! The powers that be really turned it on for Australia Day! The day was picture perfect in our beautiful region and set the tone for plenty of BBQ’s, beers and beaches to celebrate our national day. The bonus was celebrating on the Friday and still having a weekend to fully recover. Whatever you did on Australia Day, I hope you took the opportunity to appreciate the fantastic country we live in and the time to spend it with family and friends. For those who were recognised for their achievements – congratulations! Your selfless attitudes and dedication to our communities are amazing and an integral part of what knits the fabric of our society together. Well done! For those who were involved in making the Australia Day celebrations something special for our entire community – thank you for all your hard work and dedication. Without your efforts there would be no organised activities or entertainment. You pulled off one hell of a party! My long weekend was bloody hectic! I did get a bit of beach time. I got a couple of beers and a BBQ in and I got to see quite a few of the local venues. Mark Taipari, an old school friend of mine and seasoned musician, is here from NZ and doing a mini tour throughout the Mid North Coast over the next six weeks. Mark arrived in the early hours last

Sandy Mackenzie Wednesday morning, and kicked off with the open mic night at The Lounge, followed by a gig on Friday at the Black Duck Brewery and another gig Saturday night at Port City Bowling Club. I’m exhausted and I only did groupie duties - get drinks, take a couple of videos, general support and make sure there were no sound problems - not that I would know how to fix them if there were. It was definitely something different! The music was great, the punters of all ages, thoroughly enjoyed it and I have worked out that I will never make a great groupie, at all. So, I’ll stick to newspapers for now. Any budding groupies out there, get yourself down to Flynn’s Beach Surf Club this Friday night or the Bluewater Bar on Sunday arvo to hear Mark play. You just never know your luck in a big city! Now that we’ve celebrated our national day it also hails the back to school and back to work reality of life. Good luck with that and I hope you ease back in without too much suffering. Have a great week!

Myna birds are on ‘hit list’ More of these

LOCALS are fed up with the Indian Myna Bird. As a result of a growing number of general sightings and complaints about these birds, Hastings Landcare is holding a free Indian Myna Bird and Attracting Native Birds Workshop in February. “We’re just getting reports (about myna birds) from everywhere at the moment, from right around the Camden Haven and through Wauchope,” said Stephen Allwood, Local Landcare Coordinator from Hastings Landcare “We’ve had reports to Hastings Landcare about people noticing more birds than usual, or noticing them for the first time, or noticing that they’re back again.” The workshop will be split into two sessions, an Indian Myna Bird Control session run by trainers Laura and Kevin Noble from Clarence Valley Conservation in Action, and the second session, Attracting Native Birds to your Garden or Farm by Peter West from Hastings Birdwatchers. The first session will cover Indian Myna identification, impacts of the species to the environment, different control methods including trapping, preferred baits, euthanasia and much more. “The Indian Myna Bird was originally brought to Australia to control insect pests, but that ended in more damage than good,” Stephen explained. “They compete with native birds for nesting hollows and they actually turf out native birds nests and destroy their eggs and chicks. “Even small animals are driven out of their hollows by the Indian Myna, and once they’ve been in there nesting, quite often the native animals don’t use their nests again, because

the myna birds have a really messy nesting habit. So the native birds and mammals won’t use it again, so ultimately they are competing for those limited hollows and habitats.” Stephen says the Indian Myna birds have mainly inhabited the east coast, but are spreading across the country. “Their distribution is definitely getting bigger,” said Stephen. “They do like the suburban areas so for the everyday person, the best way of getting rid of them is by trapping them. There are

also other methods that will be further explained in the upcoming workshop.” The second session will focus on attracting a diverse range of native birds to gardens or farms. The Indian Myna Birds are known to become dominant in urban areas and the number of different bird species found in and around the home is a good indication of the health of your surrounding natural environment. “You can increase the types of birds and the frequency that they occur in your garden by

providing them with native plants, shelter and water,” said Sue Proust from Hastings Birdwatchers. Get rid of this pest species leaving more room for the spectacular native birds by attending the Indian Myna Bird and Attracting Native Birds Workshop on Thursday February 15 from 9am-12pm at the Wauchope RSL Club in the Lasiandra Room. The workshop is free and morning tea is provided. Our community benefits greatly from their tireless efforts and these awards are “a chance for us to formally acknowledge them and say thank you

A day for all Aussies to be proud By SUE PATERICK IT WAS an enjoyable afternoon last Thursday of music, comradery and inspiration for the 200 people who attended Kempsey’s Australia Day Awards ceremony at the Slim Dusty Centre. Before the official proceedings began everyone gathered to chat, eat delicious nibbles and listen to the incredible voice of the beautiful Lucy Barber. Elder Uncle Bob Smith performed the Welcome to Country in melodious Dunghutti and thanked Kempsey Shire Council for inviting him to the Award Ceremony and for the respect it has for Indigenous culture. “We live in a beautiful country from the mountains to the sea,” Uncle Bob said. “Our grandfathers, our grandmothers belong to this country as I belong to this country. “You be well in this country.” After thanking Uncle Bob and acknowledging the Dunghutti people as the original inhabitants of this ancient land, Kempsey Shire Mayor Liz Campbell admitted that Australia Day was one of the special days on her calendar. She said it was a special day on Kempsey’s calendar too and talked of the different cultural backgrounds and experiences we all have. “Together we play a part in our local community and nationally,” Mayor Campbell said. “We are people of the Macleay Valley, we are one, we are Australian.” She also wanted us to take this time to appreciate the things we value in Australia, which is freedom, mateship and community. “Our community makes this event special and our community nominate those people

At Kempsey’s Australia Day Award Ceremony a surprised Elizabeth (Betty) Green was presented with the Citizen of the Year Award for 2018 by the Ceremony’s Ambassador Joel Pilgrim and Mayor Liz Campbell worthy of an award,” Mayor Campbell added. “So it is right on Australia Day that we say thank you for all your achievements.” The Macleay Valley’s Australia Day Ambassador, Joel Pilgrim, then took the stage to assist Mayor Campbell to present the 2018 Australia Day Awards. “I recognise all the volunteer hours and all the work that keeps this community going and how all this contributes to this great nation,” he said. “I’d like to congratulate all of the nominees and recipients of the main awards. “Our community benefits greatly from their tireless efforts and these awards are a chance for us to formally acknowledge them and say thank you.” The winners of the 2018 Kempsey Australia Day Awards were: Citizen of the Year - Elizabeth (Betty) Green, Young Citizen of the Year Abigael Baker, Volunteer of the Year - Richard Collins, and Community Group of the Year Baylin’s Gift Charity. Betty Green has been a volunteer with the St Vincent de Paul Society welfare workers for

over 20 years, a member of the Kempsey Singers for over 15 years and was a Kempsey Shire Councillor for 12 years, several as Mayor. Abigael Baker has represented the Macleay Valley in sport at Mid North Coast, North Coast and NSW levels and has coached both junior and senior soccer teams. She also scored in the 94th percentile for her Undergraduate Medical Admission Test to gain admission interviews at Newcastle University and the University of Western Sydney. Richard Collins is the founding President and a driving force behind the South West Rocks Maritime Precinct Group. This volunteer organisation has restored and preserved the historic Boatman’s Cottages and Pilot House and enabled the use of these heritagelisted buildings for local non-profit groups such as the Maritime Museum. Baylin’s Gift is committed to educating young people and their support networks on depression, anxiety, gender/sexual identification and suicide awareness. The charity was founded by Hayley Hoskins,

who has made it her mission to raise awareness and support for young people after losing her son Baylin to suicide in 2016. At the 2018 Port Macquarie-Hastings Australia Day Award Ceremony last Thursday evening, Mayor Peta Pinson said she was inspired by the efforts of the local heroes who have gone above and beyond for their community. “Hearing the individual stories of the recipients is incredibly motivating, and sets a great example of what it means to be Australian,” she said. “On behalf of the greater Port MacquarieHastings community I would like to thank all nominees and recipients of this year’s Awards for making a real difference, and an extraordinary contribution in helping to shape the future of our thriving region.” The winners of the 2018 Port Macquarie/ Hastings Australia Day Awards were: Citizen of the Year - Geoffrey Shelton, Senior Citizen of the Year - George Campbell, Young Citizen of the Year - Rhiannon Simmonds, and Community Group of the Year - Friends of Mrs York’s Garden. Geoffrey Shelton is teaching Maritime Studies at Port Macquarie TAFE, is an active member of the Port Macquarie Blue Water Fishing Club and the founding member of the Port Macquarie Foreshore Protection Association. He is also a representative on the Recreational Fishing Salt Water Trust Expenditure Committee and the Foreshore Land Advisory Group, and has been an active volunteer for Port Macquarie Marine Rescue for 28 years. George Campbell is Secretary of the Mid North Coast Presbytery Standing Committee, and a Serving Secretary of the Rotary Club of Wauchope. He helped organise the Wauchope Farmers Markets, assisted in organising and preparing meals for the Rotary Lodge at Port Macquarie Base Hospital, and was named as a Rotary Foundation Paul Harris Fellow in 2016. He is a member of the Wauchope Sing Australia Group, and is a committee member at the Hastings Woodworkers Guild. Rhiannon Simmonds is a student at Port Macquarie High School (East Campus). She was a youth leader within the school and a member of the Hastings Youth Advisory Council. Rhiannon is a tireless advocate for ecofriendly and sustainable living, actively campaigns for reusable products and upcycling, and partners with local like-minded community groups. She is also the founder of the Little Makers Market, a monthly pop-up market that supports local artists and craftspeople. The Friends of Mrs York’s Garden was established over three years ago to re-energise Mrs York’s original garden after it fell into ruin and all but disappeared.

FROM THE MAYOR A weekly conversation with Mayor Peta Pinson Welcome to my first ‘Your Local Independent’ weekly message for 2018, a year which I’m calling ‘20-greateen’. After a busy but relaxing Christmas/ New period, it’s hard to believe that January has already come and gone, and for many of us the holiday period is well and truly a distant memory. The craziness of a busy January has settled as tourists and visitors leave town, and it’s back to normal as many of us have returned to work and sent the kids back to school for another year of learning and adventure. I’m sure all of our New Year’s resolutions are in full swing (I haven’t broken mine yet), and can you believe that the supermarkets are already encouraging us to

indulge in hot-cross buns! You couldn’t help but notice how busy our towns and villages have been over the past month, as holiday-makers, family and friends joined us to enjoy our relaxed lifestyle and impressive range of local attractions and experiences. Our visitors provide a great boost for our growing economy and you may have heard that we’ve just been rated number 1 ‘Australian town of the year’ in NSW by WOTIF ... beating destinations like the popular Byron Bay. It doesn’t matter where you’re from, what we have is hard to beat, and many of our visitor’s return time and time again, with an increasing number deciding to make us their permanent home. This Australia Day I had the honour of welcoming 24

pmhc.nsw.gov.au new citizens who have taken the oath to become new Aussie citizens, and Port Macquarie-Hastings locals. There is no greater pleasure than welcoming families from across the globe and hearing of their journeys and stories which are truly inspirational. We definitely do live in the best part of the lucky country, which is something I’m reminded of every day as I take my morning stroll. ‘Living the dream’ is the standard response I get from one fellow walker, and I must say how much this perfectly sums up the lifestyle we enjoy. I’m also living the dream and I wish you all a prosperous, safe and healthy ‘20-greateen’. Until next week, Peta.

Plans for Lake Cathie dredging

Kookaburra Club needs helping hand By SUE PATERICK KEMPSEY’S Kookaburra RSL Day Club is looking for more dedicated volunteers to help elderly members of the community come together for fun and socialising. The Day Club meets every Friday morning at the RSL Memorial Hall in York Lane in Kempsey to provide morning tea and a twocourse lunch for people usually over 70 years young. Joint Co-ordinator, Lyn Carter, said age didn’t matter as the club was open to anyone who was lonely and wanted to meet new friends or catch up with old ones. “Everyone is welcome,” she added. The price of these enjoyable mornings out is just $6 and a community bus can be arranged for pickups for a cost of $4 if people are unable to get there on their own. And once there people can play cards or Bingo, which costs $4 for 10 games. The fun kicks off about 8.30am and goes to about 1pm. The Kookaburra RSL Day Club is attached to the Department of Veteran Affairs and has been running for 20 years. It first began to give returned servicemen and women place to meet and socialise.

Kempsey’s Kookaburra RSL Day Club Joint Co-coordinator, Lyn Carter, is calling for more volunteers to keep this valuable service going It currently has 25 to 30 members but only about six volunteers who help out every Friday morning and that just isn’t enough. If no one else puts up their hand to help out then this wonderful community service will be forced to close down. “We used to have about 10 volunteers but a few retired recently so we really need some extra hands to keep going,” Lyn said. “It is only three or four hours out of your week and you don’t have to work hard, just do little jobs that make it easier for everyone else.”

WAUCHOPE

Lyn has been a Kookaburra volunteer for 10 years and keeps going because it feels good to do something for other people. “I know my little bit makes our patrons feel good and that makes it all worthwhile,” she said. To become a volunteer with the Kookaburra RSL Day Club or to join in on the fun, either turn up on the day or contact Lyn on 65631695 or fellow Joint Co-ordinator Vivienne Collins on 65623238. The first meeting for 2018 will be on Friday February 2 from 8.30am.

FOLLOWING the recent announcement of funding to address the build-up of sand in Lake Cathie, Port Macquarie-Hastings Council are continuing to work through the required actions in preparation for rejuvenation works. Group Manager Maria Doherty said that Lake Cathie is an extremely sensitive environment and a wonderful recreational asset for our area. “As a result there are a number of important actions Council are required to undertake before any dredging work can commence,” said Ms Doherty. “The lake is a natural waterway, and an ecologically sensitive area that experiences constantly changing environmental conditions. “Significant planning and strict guidelines including lake surveying and environmental assessments need to occur over the next month to ensure the lake is protected. “The dredging will see the movement of approximately 21,000 cubic metres of sand that has built up over time, with this material being used for foreshore rehabilitation and beach nourishment. The lower lake will be deepened to ensure that swimming and boating activities can occur safely.” Proposed timings for the rejuvenation works are as follows: Late January – funding secured and announced; February – lake surveying and dredging environmental assessments; February – Crown licence secured and dredging tender issued; April – dredging tender awarded; Late May– dredging commences. The dredging works are expected to take about 4 weeks to complete. “Lake Cathie is an important community asset, and whilst it is a difficult environment it is important that it is protected for future generations,” added Ms Doherty.

OVER 300 Nurse Scholarships Available: Just a reminder that school leavers and anyone looking for a career change should consider applying for one of over 300 NSW Government scholarships to study nursing. The scholarships support recipients to study the Diploma of Nursing, leading to registration as an Enrolled Nurse, and applications now open. If working with patients and health professionals to provide compassionate care sounds interesting and rewarding, I encourage you to join the NSW Health nursing community and apply for an Enrolled Nurse scholarship. The NSW Government is committed to growing the Aboriginal nursing workforce, and so I particularly encourage Aboriginal people to consider this opportunity as a great way to contribute to the health outcomes of local communities. The Diploma of Nursing program commences in TAFEs and Registered Training Organisations from March 2018 at various locations across NSW. On course completion and registration,

Leslie Williams tries out Port Macquarie’s new reverse vending machine at Settlement City scholarship recipients will be offered a job as an Enrolled Nurse in a NSW Health facility (subject to standard recruitment processes). Scholarship applications are open until February 13, 2018.

For more information and how to apply, visit www.health.nsw.gov.au/enrollednurse Return and Earn reverse vending machine opens in Port Macquarie: Port Macquarie now has a reverse vending machine for the Return and Earn container deposit scheme, where people can claim 10-cent refunds for eligible drink containers they return. The reverse vending machine is located at the western carpark at Settlement City adjacent to the canal. People will be able to choose to donate their refund directly to charities, receive a docket redeemable for cash or an electronic transfer using PayPal at the machines. Return and Earn is the largest litter reduction initiative to be introduced in NSW, and now there are more collection points for people to be involved. There has been widespread community support for Return and Earn, with over 50 million containers returned across the state since December 1. Most drink containers between 150ml and three litres are eligible for the 10c refund. Containers should be intact (not crushed or broken) and have a readable barcode to be eligible. For more information, including a full list of eligible drink containers, visit: www. returnandearn.org.au

Breakfast followed by Scrabble A LONG time ago a woman came into the office and handed me a book, or she left it for me, I can’t remember. It had to be at least 10 years ago. I think it was more like 15. I think she said it had been written by a relative of hers. The book was written by Derryn Hinch. He was editor of the Sun in Sydney at the time of the book’s publication. I put it on my desk and then put a paper over it. You should see my desk. The election success of Derryn Hinch reminded me to look for the book. There were some bits of paper with the book, but they disappeared a long time ago. The book was titled The Scrabble Book. Hinch dedicated the book to his 88-year-old grandmother, Sarah Hinch, who he said was his first Scrabble opponent. He said that Sophia Loren and Richard Burton did it to console Burton during one of his muchpublicised estrangements from Elizabeth Taylor. They were actors, in case you didn’t know. Hinch added that scrabble meant to scratch, scrape or paw with the hands. It also meant to make irregular, meaningless marks. My big dictionary says Scrabble, with a capital S, is a proprietary name of a game in

my

LAURIE BARBER

which players use tiles displaying individual letters to form words on a special board. Although the first use of the word, with a capital S, is mentioned in the big dictionary only in 1950, the word scrabble, with a lower case ‘s’, goes back to at least 1537. Then the use was more on the sense of scribble. The 1537 sense was to “scrable” on the doors of the gate. I presume this meant the scribble we sometimes see on toilet doors and this sense continued for many years. The Scrabble we play, or some of us do anyway, was invented by Alfred Mosher Butts, an American architect, who invented the game of scrabble in 1838. Butts created a game by combining elements of anagrams and crossword puzzles, a popular pastime of the 1920s. Players would draw seven lettered tiles from a pool and then attempt to form words from their seven letters. Butts studied the

front page of The New York Times to calculate how frequently each letter of the alphabet was used. Butts initially called the game Lexiko, but later changed the name to Criss Cross Word. He died in April, 1993. Butts later invented another game titled simply Alfred’s Other Game; but it never took off. But Scrabble went on to sell millions. Several other examples of scrabble are in the big dictionary. For example, one definition in the USA is a confused struggle or even a scramble, but in Australia scrabble is often confused with scribble or writing on toilet walls or on anything else. But I come back to the Scrabble Book, dedicated to Eve “even though her name is worth 18 points on a triple word square”. The book, “if you play it right and somehow stretch it through two triple word squares, can be worth 203 points”. Alfred Butts, according to the book, said to his wife “Have a look at this when you’ve finished your breakfast… I think I have invented a new game”. Her reaction is not recorded, but she probably said “hurry up and finish your breakfast so I can do the washing up”. lauriebarber.com; lbword@midcoast.com.au

How to get your business LinkedIn According to a recent social media marketing “industry report, LinkedIn has now surpassed Facebook

as the number 1 most important social media platform for B2B (Business to Business) marketers

BUSINESS people are being urged to review their social media strategies to ensure that they have a LinkedIn company page to market their business. ETC’s Business Programs Manager Kevin Riddell said LinkedIn is the largest professional network in the world, with more than 500 million users in more than 200 countries. “LinkedIn is no longer a site just for resumes and CVs. Unlike other social media platforms, it is geared solely around creating professional and business connections. We are finding that businesses that know how to market on LinkedIn are reaping big results,” Mr Riddell said. ETC is delivering a series of LinkedIn workshops to help small business operators learn how to optimise LinkedIn to market their businesses. Mr Riddell said the workshops will cover the following topics: • Optimising profiles for better results (both personal profiles and company pages); • Making connections - who with, how-to and best practices; • Newsfeed posts, interactions and content; • Personal branding and business branding as it relates to LinkedIn; • Searching - how to get the best results, understanding search strings and setting up search alerts; • Advanced tools, and paid LinkedIn features. “According to a recent social media marketing industry report, LinkedIn has now surpassed

Facebook as the number 1 most important social media platform for B2B (Business to Business) marketers,” Mr Riddell said. “The research showed that 80% of B2B leads come from LinkedIn, and 94% of B2B marketers use LinkedIn to distribute content.” ETC’s LinkedIn workshops for small business will be held in the following locations: • Port Macquarie – Friday 16 February, Rydges, 11.00am – 2.00pm; • Coffs Harbour – Thursday 8 March, C.ex, 11.00am – 2.00pm. The workshops will be presented by LinkedIn expert, Anna McAfee. “Anna is an experienced, independent LinkedIn trainer who is passionate about helping local businesses leverage off the power of LinkedIn. She is so passionate about the platform that she set up local LinkedIn meet-ups, which is a concept that has now been copied globally,” Mr Riddell said. “We encourage local business operators to take time out of their day to attend these workshops. They will learn how to use LinkedIn as a business development tool and gain customised, hands-on, practical advice.” For more information and to book visit etcltd. com.au/events-workshops Or contact Kevin Riddell at kevin.riddell@ etcltd.com.au

A growing obsession By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC

‘THE GOOD THING ABOUT…KOALAS’ is a ‘kidults’ book. Entertainment and education for children, information and motivation for adults. Humorous and factual, it was conceived and written by G Henshaw and illustrated by Ben Creighton, both locals in the Port Macquarie/Hastings area. The book is part of an awareness program of LIVNG with KOALAS, a social enterprise launched to help with the conservation and regeneration of the wild koala population in the local area. The Port Macquarie/Hastings Council estimate the number of koalas surviving in this region, previously a real stronghold for koalas, could be less than 2,000, with numbers rapidly decreasing. Sadly, and to the shame of all Australians, the koala is listed on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as a VULNERABLE species, with many experts now agreeing they could be extinct in the wild within 50 years. They will be rarely seen in this area within 25 years. Action needs to be taken now. Everyone can get involved. See the LIVING with KOALAS website for details - www.lwk.net.au and get in touch. The difference between human action and inaction is … extinction for the wild koala population.

THE art of ‘miniature living’ has thousands on the Mid North Coast wanting more. The Hastings Bonsai Group is bringing this ancient ‘art’ to Port Macquarie at the Bonsai Exhibition in February. “Our past exhibitions have brought in over 2,000 people per event,” said John Cavey, President of the Hastings Bonsai Group. “People are really attracted to the miniature and unique look of the Bonsai.” The exhibition will be held over the weekend of February 24 and 25 where the public can view the hundreds of Bonsai and Penjing on display. Patience is a virtue with the Bonsai, but people can watch and learn from the experts at the numerous demonstrations throughout the weekend, and maybe even purchase a Bonsai to take home and master. “We have two specialized Bonsai nurseries and their experts coming who will be demonstrating to the public how to re-pot, prune and trim a Bonsai,” Mr Cavey said. “The Bonsai is best kept in the sun and requires basic horticulture knowledge to maintain, which we can teach you on the weekend.” Bonsai cultivation is nearly 2,000 years old, dating back to some of the earliest dynasties in China. The Japanese have taken on the current interpretation of the Bonsai and developed it into the popular hobby it is today. “A Bonsai plant can be purchased from around $25-$45 at the exhibition. It’s the age and the style that determines the price factor. Ones that are up to 60 years old can fetch as much as $3,000,” Mr Cavey said. “People pass these plants down to generations beyond them, so they become very special and treasured in the family. There was a Bonsai in Japan recently that was documented at 600 years old, and sold for US $1million.” The Bonsai exhibition is something for the whole family to enjoy with raffle prizes, a chance to vote for your favourite tree, and a ‘find the stone face in the tree’ competition for the kids. “People travel from all over for these events,” said Mr Cavey. “The popularity of the Bonsai has just grown tremendously over the years and people can’t get enough. People are so drawn to the fact that you are trying to replicate a tree in

Hastings Bonsai Group member Rob shows off an example of these incredible plants nature, but in much smaller size.” The Hastings Bonsai Group is a not-for-profit club catering for community members interested in Bonsai. The group consists of 40 members who live and breathe Bonsai. Meetings are held on the first Saturday of every month at 10am at the Port Macquarie Rotary Community Hall, 198 Hastings River Drive Port Macquarie. Beginners are welcome. “We are really looking forward to the exhibition and are always welcoming new members into our group,” Mr Cavey said. “We are keen to promote interest in the hobby in a friendly fun filled way. Maybe you have been into Bonsai for many years and retired into the area or would just like to learn something

new then we would love you to drop in.” The sales tables include the Ray Nesci Bonsai Nursery, Bonsai World with Ashley Brown, Mudlark Pottery with Penny Davis, Japanese Artwork with Carol Felton, and the Hastings Bonsai Group Club Sales Table. Don’t miss out on this ancient art on Saturday, February 24, from 9.30am-5pm and Sunday, February 25, from 9.30am-3pm at the Panthers Auditorium, 1 Bay Street Port Macquarie. Admission is $4 for adults, $2 for pensioners and students, and free entry for children accompanied by an adult. any enquiries contact John Cavey on 0419 991 946 or hbgjohnc@ gmail.com

program to boost the number of doctors in cities and regional areas. “We welcome these outstanding graduates to Port Macquarie Base Hospital (PMBH) and we are pleased to be playing our part in leading the country when it comes to training junior doctors. “I had the pleasure of working at PMBH as a registered nurse for a number of years and I was fortunate enough to work alongside some outstanding medical graduates.” NSW guarantees intern positions to all domestic medical graduates for NSW

universities. NSW also provides internships to many graduates from interstate universities and, where possible, international graduates. “NSW is the only state to offer two-year employment contracts to graduates commencing their internship which includes a rotation through a network of metropolitan, regional and rural hospitals,” Mrs Williams said. In addition, under the NSW Rural Preferential Recruitment pathway, 132 medical graduates will spend the majority of their first two years working in a rural setting.

Record number of NSW doctor interns in 2018 MEMBER for Port Macquarie, Leslie Williams has welcomed 11 medical graduates for 2018 as part of a record intake of intern doctors funded by the NSW Government. Across the State, 999 interns, up from 992 in 2017, will commence their new positions, representing the NSW Government’s commitment to introducing new doctors into the health system, with the state leading the country in terms of funding and conditions. Mrs Williams said that over $107 million had been invested into the state-wide internship

The Port Macquarie Sailing Club’s new safety boat that will now be seen looking after the fleet on Sundays

Club’s new safety boat

PORT Macquarie Sailing Club had a handicap start for the 3rd race of the summer series last Sunday. It was held in muggy conditions with a lightish easterly and the last of the run-out tide, then low water that saw quite a few boats hit the mud flats, and finally, the start of the run-in tide. The arrival of our new (to us) centre console RIB safety boat was quite a highlight for the club members, but it didn’t need to assist anyone in this race. In the catamaran division, the

easy conditions suited Dave Winter on Spica, allowing him to win on both yardstick and handicap over Tony Kuhn on Stella. The monohull fleet had quite a few new and varied crew combinations, creating a bit of a headache for the handicapper. With his regular crew away, and not wanting to damage his own boat before the Booti Cup in 2 weeks again, Steve Bohlsen sailed with newcomer Steve Couch in the club boat Big Bang for an easy win on both yardstick and handicap.

They were followed on both yardstick and handicap by Paul Robertson and Jack Corthals in Flembouyant, Terry Howard in Ratz, Simon and Elsa Gandy and Jaiden in Voyager (despite a heavy collision with a starboard channel marker), Tony Walker in Deep Purple, Geoff Smith and Andrew Hurrell in Jupiter, and, in a great effort, young Caitlin Hicks and Ilsa Smith in Sailfish. Next Sunday is race 4 of the summer series with a 2pm start. Jeff Walsh is rostered on duty.

Winner of the scratch score was Phil Pye with a two over par round for 34 points. The ball competition went down to 34 points on a c/b. NTP’s went to Gordon Hayes, Phil Dixon, Ross Turner and Barry Tink Saturday at Port Macquarie Golf Club was a single stableford. Winner in A grade was Darren Garvey with a great round for 41 points. Runner-up was Terry David with 38 points on a c/b from third placed Bradley Field. Winner in B grade was Kent Johnson with 39 points. Runner up was Frank Scuglia on a c/b from Ken Bartrim and Stephen Purcell. Bartrim took out third place. Winner in C grade was Graham Cutcliffe with 38 points. Runner up was Alan Thompson with 37 points on a c/b from third placed Ian Johnson. Winner of the scratch score was

One of our ladies, Jan Davies, won the putting and Sue MacKay won the ladies’ NTP. Ron Window, a very consistent player, won the men’s NTP, with Dale Harrel winning the men’s longest drive. The Social Club is going to provide 3 months free golf for those interested, clubs and balls provided. Roll up in February and see if golf is for you! Kempsey Golf Club has details.

New pontoon is a big plus By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC THERE is a new structure at McInherney Park that is bringing plenty of joy to disabled locals. Sailability Port Macquarie is helping everyone feel the joy of sailing with the installation of their new floating pontoon in the Hastings River. The pontoon allows safe access for people with disabilities, including wheel-chair users, to access this wonderful river. “We had a temporary pontoon and every Wednesday morning we had to reassemble the pontoon, and then after sailing training we would have to pull it back out and put it on the trailer and take it to someone’s house to store,” explains Ronda Laws, Secretary of Sailability, Port Macquarie Branch. “It would take us half an hour to assemble and half an hour to pack up, so this new pontoon is a whole new ball game for us.” Sailability Port Macquarie is a volunteer-run organisation with over 74 volunteers who take their clients out for sailing. Every Wednesday morning the volunteers will take as many as 45 clients (from a database of 120 people) who come from Taree, Kempsey, and all over the Mid North Coast. These clients include students from special support units at schools, aged care facilities, various disability organisations and numerous independent clients. “Our clients get to do something that ablebodied people can do,” said Ronda. “Which under normal circumstances they can’t. We have nine specially designed sailing boats, three rigid inflatable recovery boats, various trailers, life jackets, wheelchairs, slings, and much more.” The new pontoon was installed in late December and is the only facility on the Hastings River that has the capacity for people with disabilities to access the river. Sailability Port Macquarie volunteers and clients out on the Hastings River thanks to the new pontoon at McInherney Park been funded by Sailability Port Macquarie via years of dedication, hard work, and various grants. This week, Sailability handed over the pontoon to the Port Macquarie-Hastings Council for ownership and maintenance. It is available for anyone who attends McInherney Park to use, and during the past few weeks locals and visitors have certainly enjoyed having it in place.

“We are handing it over to the council to receive and own on behalf of the community,” said Wayne Evans, Vice President of Sailability Port Macquarie. “The pontoon cost around $180,000 and there is still alterations to be done and a pathway to the pontoon that needs to be concreted. “Last week we took our clients out on the new pontoon for the first time and they loved it. loved the security and stability of it. A lot of our clients have balance problems due to their disability, so they felt a bit anxious at times on the old pontoon. No one had any problems with the new pontoon, and we were able to get multiple wheelchairs past each other, it was so much more convenient and everyone felt safer on it.” Wayne and Ronda both agree that the experiences their clients have had out on the water have been truly life changing. “We have one fellow who’s been coming for about three years, and he couldn’t move his limbs, he’s in a wheelchair, and he can’t speak,” explained Wayne. “But because we greet him all the time, he’s now holding his right hand out to shake our hand. That doesn’t sound much to some people, but to him it’s monumental because he’s lived 45 years with this disability. “We’ve got another fellow who has been wheelchair-bound for most of his life, and he has now graduated as a sailor and he’s qualified to take other people with disabilities out on the boats and be responsible for them. “We’ve even had stories of people with dementia who come down and are able to remember their surroundings out on the boat. One fellow came out with us and wouldn’t say a word to us, until he got out there with the sailor and said ‘you know they use to fatten bullocks out there years ago’, and then he started to remember on Tuesday to get his clothes ready for Wednesday. His wife said it was so helpful to him.” Sailability Port Macquarie Branch will be having a Bunnings Barbecue on Saturday, February 17, from 8am-4pm with all funds going straight to Sailability. Visit www.sailabilitynsw.org for further information. Dark were happy to take the lucky losers prize. The ladies’ pennant teams want to compete against the men on morning of Saturday 10th February.
