A trip you can bank on By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC

ONE local Kempsey resident has won the trip of a lifetime. When Colleen Snowsill walked into her local Westpac bank to purchase a Westpac Helicopter money bank for her grandson, the last thing she expected was a free trip to Western Australia’s magnificent Kimberley. “I wanted to buy a Westpac Helicopter money bank for our grandson and they (bank staff) said ‘no you can’t buy them, you’ve got to buy a ticket and it’s a good prize’,” explained Colleen. “It was $10 and I’d spend that on a toy for him so I bought it and came home and put the ticket on the board and forgot all about it. “The raffle organisers then had a dinner where they drew the prize and they rang me one Saturday evening at about 10.20 and said that I’d won the major prize and I was going to the Kimberley. “The raffle organisers rang me again on the

Monday and that’s when it finally sunk in.” So Colleen and her husband Alan will be relaxing in the Kimberleys in August. “We are going for just under two weeks in the high season as it’s not quite as hot then and its not the rainy season either,” said Colleen. “It’s valued at just over $17,900 and the Westpac Helicopter donated the airfares.” The trip will include everything right down to mosquito repellent, sunscreen, hats, a backpack, washing and food. “They pay for the motel when we arrive in Broome, and the helicopter ride and the small plane and then we start on the catamaran,” Colleen said. “The place looks beautiful. I’ve seen the Horizontal Falls on TV. There is no TV, no newspapers, no telephones, and your mobiles don’t work. They told us to bring a book and a hobby, so my husband’s going fishing.” Colleen’s dream to visit every state in Australia is now a very close reality. • Continued Page 3

Kimberley calling • From Page 1 “I haven’t been to the Kimberley before and Western Australia and Tasmania are the only two states I haven’t been to in Australia, so I’m ticking one off,” she said. “I’ve been to Uluru and the outback and I’ve always had an interest in Western Australia but the opportunity never arose. “Before this the only other thing I’ve ever won was $1,000 to spend over at Howard’s at Port.” Colleen says she has been very impressed with Kimberley cruise operators Discovery One and Westpac Flights. “Another thing with Discovery One is you pay $50 each as insurance in case we have to be air lifted out by the flying doctor but if per chance we don’t use it, which would be good, it becomes a donation, so that $50 each goes to the flying doctor,” Colleen explained. “It is amazing that Discovery One has donated this trip. We have spoken to the owner many times just trying to clarify different things and she is really lovely.” Colleen has since laminated her winning ticket.

Boost for Wauchope Above and below: Port Macquarie Landcare volunteers at work

Nature needs you! By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC

PORT Macquarie Landcare is calling on volunteers to help restore community bushland and koala habitats around Port Macquarie. The organisation of volunteers is dedicated to improving the ecosystem restoration of urban bushland, waterways, coastal and marine environments, while increasing community awareness and creating relationships with likeminded organisations. “We’ve been working in Port Macquarie for nearly 20 years and we’ve really changed the face of the area,” said Estelle Gough, Project Manager for Port Macquarie Landcare. “We’ve restored ecosystems and are assisting with the recovery of the koala population of the area, as well as other wildlife, and of course we improve the clean air and clean water by removing the weeds, making healthy ecosystems for everyone. “It’s so important because if there is no planet and no environment, there’s no people.” These volunteers look after a massive 80 hectares of bushland around Port Macquarie, but they need more helping hands. “Currently for Landcare volunteers we have around 20 to 30 volunteers who actually work on the sites,” said Estelle. “We have a lot more members than that but

a lot of them are family members (of volunteers) and so they don’t actually get on the site. “So we’re looking for people who would like to spend a few hours out in the beautiful winter sunshine doing some gardening. “We work Monday, Tuesday and Thursday mornings so that’s 15 hours that people regularly put in every week but we are looking for people that maybe would like to come in on a Monday or a Tuesday or a Thursday and just participate with us form around 8-12 and help us out, and help Port Macquarie. “Anybody who enjoys gardening in their own backyard is going to enjoy what we do. “Plus you meet a social group and many of our people go on holidays together and help each

other during illnesses, so we become a support group for each other as well.” Although the group has done tremendous work in keeping the Port Macquarie environment beautiful over the last 20 years, there is so much more to be done. “We need to keep on top of the weeds,” Estelle said. “All the reserves are at different stages of coming to completion, and in the summer its very critical that we have a lot of hands on deck to allow the plants to get established early and then the weeds reduce and we don’t need as many people. “For the last six hectares of our project at Wrights Creek we’ve got to plant out, we are going to need a lot of people help us to make it into a wonderful creek line right into the middle of the city. “So the rest of Wrights Creek still needs to be re-vegetated and weed free to complete it.” Why not get into Port Macquarie’s stunning outdoors, enjoy the sunshine, and even make a few friends while helping nature? To help fund projects such as saving the koalas, donate to the organisation at https:// landcareaustralia.org.au/positive-outcomesappeal/ To volunteer email landcareportmac.com.au For more information visit http:// landcareportmac.com.au

WAUCHOPE’S construction boom is set to continue with this week’s announcement by Federal Assistant Health Minister and Member for Lyne Dr David Gillespie of $8.5million in Federal capital funding and a further 40 new residential aged care places worth around $2.62 million a year towards a new $30million residential aged care development in Wauchope. Dr Gillespie said local aged care provider Bundaleer would expand its current operations in Wauchope to meet current and future demand of a rapidly growing population. The new development will be constructed next to Wauchope Hospital. “Bundaleer has been at the forefront in the planning and development of aged care services in our community for many years and I’m delighted they have been successful in their bid to secure Federal funds to pursue this major expansion of residential aged care services, dementia care and mental health support in our local area,” Dr Gillespie said. “The Federal Coalition Government is investing record funding in aged care services, particularly in our electorate of Lyne, and I am pleased this latest announcement will deliver more aged care options for seniors in our community.” “It will also deliver a major economic dividend for the local area through the creation of many jobs throughout the construction period, and also permanent jobs across a range of professions well into the future.” Bundaleer Chief Executive Officer Gareth Norman said the additional 40 beds would bring together the greatly needed requirements for dementia support in the local area Over 60 people are expected to be employed throughout the construction phase of the project.

Who pays for Council’s futile appeal? I HAVE followed closely the Mid Coast Road Services versus Port Macquarie Hastings Council case with the Supreme Court. The Port Macquarie Hastings Council has lost their futile appeal to the Supreme Court of Appeal against Mid Coast Road Services and our Mayor Peter Besseling, resigned just days before the appeal was dismissed. Who does the ratepayer hold responsible and accountable for this four-year ongoing debacle? I wrote to the Supreme Court on 13

Airport intentions I WAS pleased to note that the Kempsey Council made a statement in YLI (May 11) regarding its intentions concerning Kempsey Airport which should settle some of the misleading claims by your readers. The Council reported that the Development Application from the Australian International Aviation College “states that there will be 23,000 (presumably in total) flights taking off from Kempsey Airport in 2018 between 6am and midnight, seven days a week.” This rather varies from the

March, 2017 and again on 21 April, 2017 asking to be advised when the deferred judgement was passed down as any concerned ratepayer is entitled to do. I rang five of our current sitting Councillors asking them if they voted to proceed back to the Supreme Court of Appeal with regard to this matter and only two were prepared to speak to me. The other three Councillors I tried to contact did not return my phone calls. On 30 March, 2017, I emailed the

General Manager to inform him of my conversations with the Councillors and to date he has not responded to my email. It does not make sense to me as a ratepayer that a decision of this magnitude, to go back to the Supreme Court and appeal, would be made without a majority vote from the sitting Councillors. The ratepayers were already out of pocket $750,000 before the appeal. Now that the appeal has been dismissed we are now paying Mid

“additional 27,000 movements” claimed by one person and the “proposal for up to 28,687 movements yearly” by another. Not that the difference is very significant because 23,000 take-offs, based on only 15 hours per day, say from 7.00am until 10pm, equates to an average of only just over four take-offs per hour and I presume the same number of landings since it is generally regarded that take-offs are voluntary and landings are compulsory. It is up to Kempsey Council to consider a curfew on training take-offs but I doubt if they would approve up to midnight. The comparison between Kempsey and Port Macquarie airports is rather

that certain concerns were raised at a meeting of the Joint Regional Planning Panel on March 15. However “the Panel elected to suspend making a decision until a more comprehensive and accurate study on noise pollution, chemical contamination, traffic issues and other environmental issues were to be studied”. Further, the Kempsey Council announced in the May 11 article in the YLI an expectation to form an ongoing Airport Consultative Group. This seems that both of these decisions to be the right way to go. Ron Walesby Port Macquarie

I ATTENDED a wedding on April 1 at Rainbow Beach, Bonny Hills. I later learned that Port Macquarie-Hastings Council charged $150 to hold it in the reserve. A request to Council to mow the long grass that had sprung up after the heavy March rains was refused! The father of the bride and his friend, both elderly, cut the ankle-deep grass on the morning of the wedding with domestic mowers and placed the cuttings in their bins.

Thumbs Down IS old fashioned honesty dead these days? A pensioner lost a black zip wallet containing holiday cash in Settlement City Supermarket, April 15. The finder never handed the wallet in.

Thumbs Up TO Ron Walesby for his very informative Letter Of The Week. Nobody in this area has more aviation experience than Ron. Experienced pilots and operators are sick of Councils and NIMBs that know nothing about aircraft operations telling the industry how it should be run. The Kempsey (Aviation) College is an opportunity not to be passed up - heaven only knows Kempsey needs it!

Thumbs Down TO the parking situation at the Port Macquarie Base Hospital. What a joke! I had an appointment there last Tuesday and drove around for 15 minutes and still couldn’t find a park. I cancelled my appointment. We have a beautiful hospital with so many great services available. BUT the parking is a disgrace. Some staff members are arriving at work two hours before their actual start time so they can get a park. What a shame! Something needs to be done ASAP.

Thumbs up TO the Lions Clubs of Port Macquarie and Tacking Point for the great job done at the Lions Park, Coat Point. Not only a tribute to 100 years of Lions Clubs but an interesting tourism information point.

WITH no more variation in water rates, we are all now paying one high rate for water. The more money they get the less we see done, especially west of the highway in the outer Hastings. When will the money grab stop?

WHILE you were all kicking back, reading last week’s edition of YLI, I had the dubious pleasure of having my bi-annual colonoscopy. Oh, the joys! It’s not the actual procedure that is the problem; that’s the easy bit. It’s the nuclear reactive toxic waste that you must drink for two days prior and the fabulous diet that’s hard to stomach - literally! Apparently, the prep kit substance is easier to tolerate than it used to be. All I can say is, “hallelujah!” If that’s the improved version, thank God, I haven’t had to go there! Essentially the surgeon needs you to be squeaky clean from the inside out – which kinda makes it understandable that one of the drinks is like salted dishwashing water – strained, after a full load of dishes. The other substance is like a cross between Eno’s and chalk with a splash of aluminium or something – dissolved in warm water just to make sure the gag factor is at least 150 per cent! It’s absolutely revolting; but it works – faster than a speeding bullet. Do not leave the house – this stuff is explosive matter and the chemical reaction is almost immediate! The next two days is all about the newfound, deep and intimate relationship you will find with your toilet. The surgery is a bit of an anticlimax – 45 minutes and your done and dusted! To be honest; it was the best power nap I’ve had in months!

odious and the claim that Port Macquarie has “far more extensive and up to date monitoring” is not borne out by fact in that there are no such facilities. Like Kempsey, separation with other aircraft is maintained by pilot vigilance and reporting by other aircraft in the local area. Hence the degree and quality of radio traffic are important considerations. Further, I suggest that noise nuisance is assessed as a “noise level” and by considering how many hours per day that the noise level is to be experienced - not by multiplying the noise of one aircraft by the number of take-offs in a year. Coast Road Services even more. Who pays for the cost of this futile appeal? Our Councillors need to be more accountable for their decisions as actions have consequences. Perhaps the upcoming by-election could be partially funded by those Council employees and Councillors responsible for this four-year debacle. Junior Tour ‘recycled’ in 2017 By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC IT’S been 10 years since the Port Macquarie Cycle Club last held its Junior Tour, but this year’s event is making up for lost time. Officially known as the Percival Property Port Macquarie Junior Tour, this year’s event will see riders from under 9s to under 19s riding around the beautiful natural landscape of Port Macquarie on June 10-11. “This is the first time the tour is being held in recent history,” said Greg Linsdell, President of the Port Macquarie Cycle Club. “We’ve held the tour here over a decade ago so we’ve just returned to hosting the Port Macquarie Junior Tour this year.” Greg says he is expecting up to 200 riders through all the age categories. “We are expecting a good turn out,” he said. “Port Macquarie is a beautiful place and if you’re going to take your junior riders to a racing event in winter it’s probably as good as you are going to get. Other events can be a lot colder and less pleasant at this time of year. “Riders will definitely be coming from all around New South Wales. We’ve heard of riders coming from Canberra and Brisbane as well. “So these kids and their parents take the sport pretty seriously and this is a statequalifying event so for New South Wales riders, their results will contribute to their selection for the state team. “So there’s a lot at stake - it’s not just about coming into beautiful Port Macquarie and having a fun race. “They could end up racing for New South Wales out of it. “However, it’s a wide field, so we’ll attract some of the best riders around. But having said that, bike racing is one of those things where you can just get in and enjoy it. “Because they’re all in their age groups, the

best riders will obviously do well but everyone will have a great experience.” The event includes three separate races – the Individual Time Trial race, the Criterium race and the Road Race. “In the road race the littlies will do around 10kms going up to the 19s who will be doing 4050kms and they will be doing quite a challenging course,” said Greg. “We’ve got some loops that we do around Burrawan Forest Drive around Cowarra Dam access road, the east side of the Cowarra Dam, the Oxley Highway side. “We’ve got a purpose-built off-road criterium course in Burrawan Forest Drive along near our club house. “We encourage anyone to come and check it out and give their support to the kids and see what it’s all about. “We’ve got terrific spectator facilities and we’ve got great viewing areas but there will also be coffee and food.” And of course, where would events like these be without the support of local sponsors. “We couldn’t run this event without the fantastic support we’re getting from Percival Property,” explained Greg. “Percival have been supporting cycling for a couple of years now and they helped us with the Northern Division Championships in 2016. Percival gives terrific community support, they support a lot of sports and fortunately for us we are one of them.” The Percival Property Port Macquarie Junior Tour will take place on Saturday, June 10 and Sunday, June 11. Greg says entries will be taken right up until the day. This is a Cycling Australia-sanctioned event bringing young riders from all areas to compete. However, riders must hold a racing licence. Some of the students who took part in the #Litfest2444 storytelling festival at MacKillop College

Festival success story “

As event organisers, it was all about getting as many students involved as possible, igniting new passions and developing skills

MORE than 400 students took part in the recent #Litfest2444 at Port Macquarie’s MacKillop College. This was the first time the storytelling festival has been held, engaging young minds with the written, spoken, visual and digital word. The festival was open to all high school students throughout the Mid North Coast and the diverse program included schools from Port Macquarie and Kempsey. Festival workshops addressed traditional and digital forms of storytelling, providing students with invaluable skills towards future employment. The workshopss aimed to enhance the enjoyment of storytelling through traditional and modern mediums. Presenters were sourced from various forms and backgrounds, including modern novelists, journalists, photographers, poets and bloggers, along with many leading public figures. Event organisers, Karen Bale and Suzanne Penson, were thrilled with the amount of individual students and school groups that took part in the event and discussions are already underway for the next #LitFest2444. “It was a fantastic day for the students, getting hands-on experience and insight from industry experts,” said Ssuzanne. “We were so excited that the Port Macquarie community embraced this first-time festival with so much passion. “Thanks to three local businesses -

Brainstorm, Coastline Chiropractic and Inner Vision Surf N Skate - we were able to offer sponsorship to 20 ‘Girl Space Girls’ to attend #LitFest2444.” Karen said: “As event organisers, it was all about getting as many students involved as possible, igniting new passions and developing skills. When we met with Ren Mathieson from Girl Space and saw her passion for introducing her girls to new experiences, we knew we needed to work out a way to collaborate with her.” The Girl Space program encourages girls to find their place in the world by being themselves and having loads of fun along the way. Ren Mathieson, founder of Girl Space said: “Providing as much opportunity as possible for the girls, so they can thrive in every aspect of their life is key to the success of the Girl Space program, so offering the girls access to this storytelling festival was such an amazing experience, one the girls all really appreciated.” Matt Scully and Darren Gray had heard about

LOCAL drone flyers are being urged to download a new app to stay safe in the skies. The app clearly shows drone no-fly zones and fly-with-caution zones. There are drone no-fly zones around airports and fly-with-caution zones around airstrips and helicopter landing areas. These restrictions are to prevent mid-air collisions with aircraft. Users of the ‘Can I fly there?’ app will also see restricted and military airspace where drones must not be flown. The drone no-fly zones are shaded in red on the map. Orange shading is used to show fly-with-caution zones, which are areas where aircraft can operate at low altitudes. It is the first time an official app has been released in Australia to help drone flyers stay safe and abide by the safety regulations. The app is an essential safety tool for both recreational and commercial drone flyers. Valuable information about major airports is displayed by the app, including satellite photos of runway layouts and whether airports have air traffic control services. Information shown in the app is based on the standard operating conditions for very small commercial drones, known as the excluded category. This information should be used as a guide by recreational and certified drone flyers. CASA has partnered with specialist drone software company Drone Complier to develop the app. It is available in Android, iOS and webbased HTML5 versions.

the festival and wanted to show their support. When #LitFest2444 organisers approached them about sponsoring the students from Girl Space to attend they saw this as the perfect opportunity. Between their three businesses they offered the sponsorship to the Girl Space Program so more Port Macquarie youth could take part in the fabulous line up of workshops and presentations and take away with them new skills, new energy and a new experience. Darren Gray, owner of Coastline Chiropractic Centre and Brainstorm, said: “Whatever your passion - video, photography, writing or tackling some youth issues during the panel discussions - the festival had it covered. It is great to see an event like this in Port. We were very happy to support #LitFest2444 this year and beyond.” LitFest2444 hope to make this an annual event for high school students on the Mid North Coast, offering workshops here locally that traditionally students would have to visit metropolitan areas to attend.

NATIONALS Member for Cowper Luke Hartsuyker said disadvantaged parents of young children in Nambucca, Bellingen, Kempsey, Port Macquarie and Coffs Harbour will soon have access to the training and support they need to become work ready. Thanks to the government’s decision to expand the successful ParentsNext program, local parents will be able to access help to plan and prepare for employment by the time their children are at school. “The best form of welfare is a job and we are focused on helping more parents of young children into work,” Mr Hartsuyker said. “After successful pilots, the government is rolling out ParentsNext nationally, to connect more parents of young children with personalised support to improve their work readiness by the time their children start school.” ParentsNext is currently in 10 pilot sites around the country, however the expansion will see an extra 20 regions benefit. Since launching in April last year, ParentsNext has made a real difference in the lives of young parents and their families, and will soon be available to parents in five locations across the NSW Mid North Coast. ParentsNext participants receive personalised assistance, including advice on relevant education and qualifications, and training to improve numeracy and literacy. Further information about ParentsNext is available at www.employment.gov.a/parentsnext

Urgent need for training

Kirralee Balkin with her two TAFE NSW teachers, Daryn Apolony and Donna Mawby

Kirralee’s TAFE award

NOBODY was more surprised than Kirralee Balkin when she was first nominated for, then won TAFE NSW North Coast’s Primary Industry Student of the Year Award at Coffs Harbour on May 10. Kirralee did not have such high expectations when she began studying Certificate II in Horticulture in June, 2016 at TAFE NSW Wauchope. “I wanted to make a career change from the hospitality industry where I had been working I was sick of the unfriendly hours and not being able to see my friends on the weekend. I have always loved gardening, so I decided to try horticulture,” she said. Kirralee was a bit nervous at first. She looks after her elderly father and her classes

had to be scheduled to fit in with her caring responsibilities. “I was also worried about not being able to complete the course - I have some difficulty reading and writing, so I thought I would have trouble with remembering and pronouncing the botanical names for the plants,” she said. “I didn’t need to worry though. The more that I studied, the more my spelling and reading improved, and in the end, learning the botanical names was one of the things I enjoyed the most!” Kirralee may have been surprised at her progress, but her teacher was not. Daryn Apolony, TAFE NSW Horticulture teacher at Wauchope and Taree said: “As the course progressed, Kirralee constantly surprised herself. She is a good, hard worker who is

constantly discovering what she is capable of. “When another of my students asked me for a recommendation for someone who could help her in her small gardening business, I didn’t hesitate to recommend her.” Kirralee is just two weeks away from completing her Certificate II. She has enjoyed it so much she is going to continue her studies with Certificate III in Horticulture at TAFE NSW Taree, and is looking forward to developing her plant nursery and propagation skills. “Going back to TAFE has really helped my reading and writing skills, and has boosted my confidence,” Kirralee said with a quiet pride. “People should know that you are never too old to learn or to change your career. If you’ve got your heart set on something, give it a go!”

GOVERNMENTS and businesses need to urgently train more people and retrain existing workers. That’s the finding of a recent survey undertaken by the state’s peak business organisation, the NSW Business Chamber. The survey found that employers are experiencing skills shortages equating to more than 54,000 jobs state-wide. The NSW Business Chamber’s inaugural Workforce Skills Survey measures business attitudes on employment, education and training issues, and provides a comprehensive baseline to track future sentiment. “Connecting businesses with the skilled employees they need to grow is vital for the future of our economy,” said Mid North Coast Regional Manager Kellon Beard. “Our inaugural Workforce Skills Survey was designed to gather detailed intelligence about employers’ pain points, where our training system is meeting their needs, and where it is failing. “Across the State, the record $70 billion infrastructure pipeline presents an unmissable opportunity to upskill the next generation, making it alarming that more than two thirds of construction businesses responding to our Survey reported a shortfall in skills. “Here in the Mid North Coast Region the Manufacturing, Retail and Wholesale Trade and other business services are also experiencing significant skills shortages, a major concern given the central role these industries play in our regional economy. “At a time when high youth unemployment has reached crisis levels in some areas of NSW, it is also troubling to see indications of a mismatch between what employers expect from their staff and what our education system is currently producing. While employers in Mid North Coast Region report high levels of skills shortages, on the other side we also have concerning levels of youth unemployment.”

Pinson Plans to “Get on with it” if Elected on July 29 “A second chance to represent the Community has come about under unusual circumstances and much sooner than expected” said by election Mayoral hopeful Peta Pinson. “After coming second to the incumbent Mayor in the September 2016 election, I had thought that it would be another 4 years before I would have the opportunity again.” She went onto say. After the by election on 29 July, Pinson says “Let’s just simply get on with it”. Council needs to focus on delivering usable infrastructure to our Community. This means well overdue road repairs, footpaths and solutions to stormwater and drainage issues throughout the LGA. “Strengthening relationships with State and Federal members are vitally important in financially assisting Council to achieve delivery to the ratepayers and residents of the Port Macquarie Hastings area” she said. On the day she announced her intention to stand for a second time as a Mayoral candidate, Peta Pinson met with the General Manager of PMHC to discuss ways of moving forward after the by election should she be elected as Mayor. In the coming weeks, Ms Pinson intends to meet State member for Port Macquarie, Leslie Williams, Federal member for Lyne, Dr. David Gillespie and also Federal member for Cowper Luke Hartsuyker, with an intention to discuss her views on how to further strengthen ties between Council and other levels of Government. Minister for Roads, Maritime and Freight, Melinda Pavey visited Ms Pinson’s business early last month to view for herself the award winning ShoulderMaster attachment which was designed and developed by Stabilcorp which is owned by Peta Pinson. The issue of road safety in the Port Macquarie Hastings region was discussed at length and the benefits of the ShoulderMaster attachment were also showcased to the Minister who was impressed by the local innovation. Ms Pinson welcomes the opportunity to meet with Community groups and individuals to discuss what they would like to see from their new Mayor and can be contacted during the campaign on pinson4mayor@gmail.com Written and Authorised by Peta Pinson, 39 Commerce Street, Wauchope NSW 2446

CANBERRA CONNECTIONS With Dr David Gillespie Federal MP for Lyne

THIS year’s budget reflects the Federal Nationals’ commitment in government to make the right choices to ensure our nation’s remarkable economic growth story continues, so we can secure better days ahead for our region and our nation. Our economic growth has been hard won and we have consistently outperformed the largest advanced economies in the world, but we shouldn’t take our success for granted. We are helping hard-working Australians with a plan for more and better jobs, by securing the essentials they rely on and by easing cost of living pressures. This year’s budget delivers significant opportunities for small business. We are providing funding to incentivise the State Government to cut red tape for small businesses and will extend the instant asset write off to small businesses for a further 12 months which is great news for our local small business. We are investing over $70 billion in transport infrastructure across Australia, including the continuation of the Roads to Recovery Program with $4.4b from 2013-14 to 2020-21 committed to the construction, repair and upgrade of local roads and $685m committed from 2013-14 to 2020-21 to continue the Black Spot Program to deliver improvements such as safety barriers and street lighting to sections of dangerous road that have a crash history. Local councils will also benefit from the resumption of indexation of Federal Financial Assistance Grants to councils, which results in an extra $836.5m provided over the forward estimates. A significant investment in a $10b transformational National Rail Program will also deliver rail projects across the nation that better connect our cities, regions and create new opportunities for housing, and grow the economy. The Coalition Government is also investing $22.5m for a third round of the Stronger Communities Program which helps fund small projects in local communities, across Australia and we have established a $472m Regional Growth Fund that will deliver critical infrastructure ensuring regional areas don’t miss out on Australia’s growth. The Budget also delivers the $220m Regional Jobs and Investment Package over four years to help diversify regional economies, stimulate economic growth and deliver sustainable employment in 10 pilot regions, including the NSW North Coast. In Budget 2017, our government is guaranteeing Medicare with a Medicare Guarantee Fund that will only pay for Medicare and medicines.

Local forum on problem of DV DOMESTIC Violence Forum For Port Macquarie: One of the most insidious issues affecting far too many people in Australia is the sickening rate of domestic violence. The NSW Government recognises that more needs to be done to address this issue. I will be hosting a NSW Government community forum on domestic and family violence with my colleague Pru Goward MP, the Minister for the Prevention of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault. The forum will be held on at 6.30pm on Tuesday, June 13 at Mercure Centro Port Macquarie with local residents invited to attend. We will have experts from NSW Police, the Department of Family and Community Services and non-government service providers in the Port Macquarie community. Forums such as these are a great opportunity for local residents to gain insights about the issue, and talk to domestic and family violence experts on the frontline. I encourage as many members of the Port Macquarie community to attend this forum to discuss this crucial issue facing our community. To attend this forum, please email portmacquarie@parliament.nsw.gov.au or call 65840977. NSW Business Conditions Highest In Australia: NSW is the best place in Australia

to do business, with the latest NAB Business Survey showing NSW business conditions above the national average for 29 straight months. The findings were released as part of the NAB Monthly Business Survey for April, 2017. The survey showed that NSW has the strongest business conditions of any state. NAB’s business conditions index measures the hiring intentions, profitability, and sales activity of businesses. The business conditions index for NSW is almost four times higher than its long-term average in April. These results show yet again that if you’re a business looking to grow and looking to employ more people, NSW is the place to be. THE COWPER REPORT With Luke Hartsuyker

Federal Member for Cowper

LAST week, I was pleased to announce that progressively local residents will soon be able to start ordering services on the new fixed-line NBN network in Port Macquarie. I understand how important the NBN network rollout is for residents and businesses in Port Macquarie, so I’m very pleased to see connections available less than a year after being elected to represent Port Macquarie. NBN Co is about to switch on the first ‘nodes’ in the new network, which means the first 3100 homes and businesses will be able to start connecting to the NBN network at the end of this month. Another 34,500 premises in the Port Macquarie-Hastings region will be progressively connected to the NBN network over the coming 12 months. Faster, more reliable broadband can be a genuine boost for local families and businesses by opening up new opportunities. It’s important to note that your home or business will not automatically connect to the new NBN service in your area. You first need to explore the options by contacting your own trusted internet retailer. To find out when your home or business will be able to connect to the NBN network, visit www.nbnco.com.au.

Listening is now key to a conference

I ATTENDED a conference a few weeks ago. Although I was one of the allocated speakers and was allocated a time (the master of ceremonies said to reduce it by a few minutes because they were running over time), most of my time over the weekend was spent listening to other people speak. It was a successful conference with a few surprises to keep us all on our toes. Similar events are held each year. But was it a conference? My idea of a conference was a place where people would confer, in other words would present their opinions. But this conference had been held annually for more than 60 years in the same format, so maybe I was wrong. My big dictionary had several entries under the word conference, including ‘taking counsel’, so perhaps I was splitting hairs. After all, some of the guest speakers did give advice, whether it was welcomed or not. The Collins dictionary says a conference is a meeting at which formal discussion takes place. My Webster, printed in Chicago, says a conference is the act of conferring or consulting together, a meeting or discussion. Well, the annual meeting was held and this took about one hour of the weekend.

my

LAURIE BARBER

The word conference, according to my big dictionary, goes back to 1528, in print at least. Shakespeare had a go at it, when he wrote in Julius Caesar ‘nor with such free and fair conference’. So did Jane Austen and many other writers. The first English dictionary, published in 1604, said that conference meant ‘talking together’. It also included confabulate, meaning the same thing, which my big dictionary says goes back to 1615. The big dictionary says ‘conference’ has been used as a verb, but it is rare, with only a couple of examples going back to 1846. Stephen Murray-Smith in Right Words suggests we not use conference as a verb. He gave as an example ‘the teachers will conference’. Dictionary.com mentions a conference of sports teams or of church groups and it even mentions a meeting of committees to sort out differences of opinion between branches of the

legislature. I don’t think that will ever happen. Former Sydney Morning Herald journalist Alan Peterson, in his book Words, Words, Words suggests conference might have been the world’s first dialogue. He gives an example, as only Peterson could, but it would take half a page to tell it, but the main characters were Ogh and Ugh. He suggests the word talk would be just as effective. Actually, talk would be ideal, but I don’t think it will catch on. Firstly, not many people go to conferences to have a say. They go to listen. If you go to a parent-teacher interview, the teachers tell you how your children are doing and you have the opportunity to tell the teachers how they are performing. Just remember, what the kids tell you might not be correct. I suppose that goes for the teachers also. Those interested can find many examples of conferences around Australia and New Zealand. Most conferences involve listening to other people. It was a successful conference, by the way. Perhaps they might consider calling it something else. I have a good couple of words to finish a conference. They are ‘yes dear’. lauriebarber.com; lbword@midcoast.com.au.

Remaining independent at home “

Aged Care Plus is committed to older Australians’ right to stay in their homes for as long as they like

Home & Community Care Co-ordinator Waseem Hasan with Allan Chato

THE Salvation Army Aged Care Plus delivers care services to more than 1700 older Australians annually and understands the importance of remaining independent in your home and an active member of your community. Offering a range of services such as personal care, domestic assistance, clinical care, transport services, social support, home maintenance and modification, food services, spiritual support and so much more, Aged Care Plus’s Home & Community Care services are designed around your needs and preferences. Aged Care Plus’s Home & Community Care team came to the rescue when 85-year-old Allan Chato’s care needs started to change. Allan, who gets by with limited sight and hearing, receives assistance with his shopping and cleaning twice a week and says without this service he would be forced to move from his family home of over 60 years into residential aged care. “It is very important for me to live somewhere familiar.,” said Allan. “With limited eyesight, I have had to memorise exactly how many steps I need to take to walk anywhere within my house, and without the familiar space of my home, I wouldn’t be able to get by. “So for me and my circumstances, entering

into residential aged care just isn’t an option.” Aged Care Plus is committed to older Australians’ right to stay in their home for as long as they like, and their Home & Community Care services are designed to meet individual needs to enhance independence, health and wellbeing through a variety of support services. Waseem Hasan, Home & Community Care Co-ordinator, says Aged Care Plus gives clients greater choice in how they receive care services. “Aged Care Plus is promoting enablement and a person-centred approach where clients are able to make their own choice in terms of how they want to achieve their goals from our Home & Community Care services,” Waseem said. “I feel blessed to help the older generation in my local community in their own home. “I love the personal connections I make with my clients which enables me to better understand their needs and provide the highest quality of care possible. They become part of my extended family.” If you are beginning to notice that your everyday tasks are becoming more difficult, contact Aged Care Plus to learn how they can support you. RECOVERING from any illness takes time and the right help with healing. It’s no different when someone has suffered mental distress, trauma or some other disruption to their wellbeing. At the Community College we run a special series of small group sharing sessions called Moving Forward With Confidence to help people’s recovery. These sessions are designed to help people to gently come back into group settings when they have been in hospital or isolated at home for some time. Running for six weeks, the Moving Forward sessions help to rebuild a sense of self, and to strengthen a sense of belonging in social and work settings. They are run by senior psychotherapist Margaret Bailitis, whose supportive guidance helps participants to grow over the six weeks, with results that often mark a major change in people’s readiness to try new options in life. Carers support workers are also welcome to join the group, which works on a privacy agreement and shared support among all those present. If you, or someone you know, would like to join a Moving Forward With Confidence series, please give us a ring on 65837288 and book in soon. Or call in to 77 Hastings River Drive and speak to our friendly staff. Also check out our website to see all the other programs at Your Community College – www.portace.com.au.

FASHION and flair created an atmosphere of fun and fellowship for 105 women at Lighthouse Evening VIEW Club’s fashion parade last Saturday. Members modelled garments from Wendy Dunn’s Lakeside Fashions, Lake Cathie and received skin care advice from Sue Roach of Nutrimetics. A sumptuous afternoon tea followed with

home-baked treats. VIEW (Voice Interest and Education of Women) is a valued part of The Smith Family, providing a social platform of like-minded women. President Cheryl Corbett said: “All proceeds will be donated to The Smith Family’s Learning For Life program for disadvantaged Australian children.

“Education will show these children they can create a better future and it is the best chance they have to avoid a lifetime of disadvantage.” New members are warmly welcomed to the club’s monthly dinner meetings, with informative guest speakers and social activities. Focus on elder abuse DID you know that June 15 each year is designated by the United Nations as World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD)? This day is a reminder that, as we get older, our rights as members of our community remain, and include the right to maintain personal independence, to be treated with dignity and respect, to live without exploitation, abuse or neglect, and to be, and feel, safe. The media has reported horrific cases of elder abuse in Australia happening right now. Nationally there are around 2500 cases of reportable assaults in aged care each year. This figure is shocking, but more startling is that elder abuse is greatly underreported and thousands of cases of elder abuse will never be reported to the authorities. Elder abuse takes many forms including financial, psychological, physical, sexual, and

neglect and is most often perpetrated by a family member or someone known to the older person. Seniors Rights Service is committed to preventing elder abuse by increasing awareness of the issue and providing education on how to recognise, report and stop elder abuse. Here in Port Macquarie Hastings, the Hastings Elder Abuse Protection Network (HEAPN) is a group of community, health and legal professionals who are concerned about the safety and wellbeing of older people in our community. We meet regularly to discuss issues of concern and how we can work together to assist older people to feel safe and to provide assistance when required. Three events are coming up this month to raise people’s awareness and to get them thinking about this vital issue that affects all of us. On Friday, June 9 the Older Women’s Network

(OWN) will run a free community seminar at the Panthers Club, at 1 Bay Street Port Macquarie from 10.30am-12.50pm. The seminar aims to discuss elder abuse, knowledge of your rights and where and when people can go to seek advice and assistance. On Thursday, June 15 from 10.00am-12.00pm HEAPN will present a free forum “Time for Tea” at Wauchope Senior Citizen’s Centre at 47-51 High Street for people to talk about safety and wellbeing for older people. On the same day from 2.00pm-4pm we will also present the same free forum at Laurieton United Services Club at 2 Seymour Street Laurieton. Come and share a cup of tea with us and find out more information. Please contact Jill McDonnell on 0458 467 245 for any enquiries.

CWA backs gambling ad ban The constant “ advertisements

for gambling are normalising it...

THE Country Women’s Association (CWA) of New South Wales last week held its 95th annual conference with the Kendall branch behind a successful motion to advocate for the ban of gambling advertising on free-to-air television from 6am to 9pm daily. Delilah Amos, President of the Kendall branch, said members proposed the motion out of concern for the rising popularity of gambling across sporting codes, and the potential link to the rapid growth of gambling advertising in the media. “As a branch we felt this is an important issue in the community and we wanted to formalise this via a CWA policy to advocate against this type of advertising,” she said. “The constant advertisements for gambling are normalising it and making it seem as if you are the odd one out if you don’t have a bet. “Many families in our region are doing it tough and we believe promoting gambling so frequently on television will only make things worse, so we are delighted that our fellow members from around NSW agreed and this motion was passed.” The CWA of NSW will now adopt a formal policy on the advertising of gambling on television, enabling it to advocate for change as an organisation. Online gambling and the advertising of gambling generally was of significant interest at this year’s CWA conference, with three separate motions put forward by various branches across the state, all of which were successfully passed. The largest women’s organisation in Australia since 1922 the CWA has been working to improve the living conditions and welfare of women and families. Held this year at Mingara Recreation Club in Tumbi Umbi on the New South Wales Central Coast, the conference brought members together to debate and discuss the organisation’s

CWA of NSW President Annette Turner said the organisation had debated a range of different issues at this year’s conference policy via a list of motions proposed by branches throughout the state. Close to 800 delegates, members, observers

and visitors descended on the Central Coast during the conference week. The conference was officially opened by His

Excellency General The Honourable David Hurley AC DSC (Ret’d), Governor of NSW, accompanied by Mrs Linda Hurley, who also delivered the keynote speech. CWA of NSW President, Annette Turner, said it was great to bring members together to discuss and debate a range of issues via the proposed motions. “We are a growing, passionate, committed and diverse group of women, and this was seen clearly as we debated each motion,” she said. “You only have to read through the list of motions to see how much more there is to the CWA than tea and scones. “There are too many to list individually but this year important and highly topical issues included gambling and online gambling, marriage equality, women’s health, foreign land ownership, access to blood donations and coal seam gas.” Conference speakers alos included The Hon Bronnie Taylor MLC, Parliamentary Secretary to the Deputy Premier and Southern NSW; Dorothy Coombe, National President, Country Women’s Association of Australia; Sandra Ireson, 2017 winner of the NSW-ACT RIRDC Rural Women’s Award and Nick Arena, the 2016 NSW Farmer of the Year.

Info days to help in wild dog control

Workshop to cover small business tax Wild Dog Information Days will help people deal with problematic wild dogs such as these captured on a remote surveillance camera

NORTH Coast Local Land Services is holding a series of Wild Dog Information Days in June and July to equip landholders with the knowledge they need to manage wild dogs on their properties. Vertebrate pests have a huge impact on the agricultural industry as well as the environment and the Information Days will offer landholders the opportunity to learn more about wild dogs in the local area and what can be done to combat them. Wild dog control in NSW is legislated by the Local Land Services Act 2013 that requires owners and occupiers of land to manage wild dogs on their property. Wild dogs are considered a serious pest in Australia, attacking livestock and native animals, potentially spreading diseases and threatening human health, safety and wellbeing. Wild dog attacks on livestock and pets, lethal or otherwise, also cause emotional distress to landholders. Dean Chamberlain, Team Leader Invasive Species said: “We work collaboratively with local landholders and it’s important that

everyone has the opportunity to learn how to manage the problem.” The Wild Dog Information Days include extensive hands-on practice plus presentations on identifying wild dog signs and evaluating the impact of wild dogs on native animals, farm production and other stakeholders, tuning and setting traps and planning effective wild dog control programs. “Participation in these Information Days will give people the confidence, knowledge and training that is needed to quickly and efficiently control problematic wild dogs,” said Mr Chamberlain. “Wild dog control is more effective when neighbours collaborate and coordinated wild dog baiting programs are the most cost effective method to gain widespread landscape control of wild dogs and when this is combined with trapping and shooting will greatly reduce wild dog impacts.” The Information Days will include presentations from North Coast Local Land Services Biosecurity Officers who have expert knowledge of local conditions and wild dog

Kempsey cinema gets the go-ahead AN extra ordinary meeting held late last week, saw Kempsey Shire Council resolve to enter into legal contracts for a Public Private Partnership agreement with Gowing Bros and Majestic Cinemas. Finalising this partnership agreement means the construction of the four screen cinema complex would be complete by December, 2018. Mayor Liz Campbell acknowledged a lengthy discussion on the topic as Councillors sought clarification on a number of legal matters from representatives of Gowings and Majestic. “This is a serious commitment and I’m proud of our Councillors for continuing to investigate and debate before reaching the conclusion that we formally enter into this partnership,” said Cr Campbell. Contracts will be signed once notification has been received from the Office of Local Government (OLG) concurring that Council has complied with the Public Private Partnership Guidelines of the Local Government Act. This outcome is anticipated from an OLG meeting scheduled for mid-June. “Having the Council resolution in place means we can act immediately once we have heard from the OLG,” said Cr Campbell. The report to the extra ordinary Council meeting, available on Councils website, outlines the full detail of the proposed Public Private Partnership and the projected turnover, as provided in the business case to the Office of Local Government. It outlines the financial contributions in the partnership including the $2 million Federal Government grant and the $2 million of funding from reserves that Council is investing into the cinema construction. “There are huge economic and social benefits anticipated from this investment. It is estimated 22 direct jobs will be created after construction in addition to the jobs protected in existing businesses, by boosting the foot traffic into the CBD. “As a partner in this business, Council will be looking for a return on investment from the cinema operations. Market research and modelling along with a community survey indicates good patronage but that can’t be proven till the facility exists. “There is a risk that if the community isn’t buying tickets Council may not see its contribution returned. However this is an investment in building a social and economic hub in the centre of Kempsey, which will create more opportunities for people to live in and visit the Macleay.”

Squad members were selected on their running ability and their determination to

HOLIDAY Coast Credit Union has announced the recipients of its 2017 Community Partnership Grants and is delivering the funds to the successful community groups this week. Formal presentations of the Grant funds were held throughout this week. Grants totalling $64,425 are now being distributed amongst 29 local organisations following the review and consideration of the many applications received from local not-for– profit community and sporting groups. The selected projects for funding this year again demonstrate the overarching credit union philosophy of “People Helping People” and in doing so assist in making our communities a better place to live, work and play. “In this current financial year we have now given or committed to grants and sponsorship totalling in excess of $165,000 with our annual giving to Life Education and other community support initiatives in addition to the current funding distribution,” said Holiday Coast Credit Union CEO Neville Parsons. “Holiday Coast Credit Union remains focussed on improving the economic and social well being of its members and the communities in which we all live and work. “As a business, we focus on providing our members (our customers) with quality,

Broncos will buck the ‘curse’ There is something about Origin time that brings out “ the superhuman performances

THE Origin curse hit the Broncos hard. Although Your Local Independent (YLI) went to press as the Origin opener was happening at Suncorp Stadium, Brisbane were already bruised and battered by Origin. They were touched up by the Warriors, and then have to stay on the road against the Roosters this weekend. YLI tipsters finished with an even card – two from two. Which means we haven’t made any headway on the leaders. As we approach Round 13 and the halfway point, unfortunately it is getting close to ‘catchup football’ time in the tipping ranks. We’ll hold our nerve for a couple of weeks and then see if we have to pray for some bizarre bounces of the ball to get us back near the top of tipping comps. Without the knowledge of what happened on Wednesday night we are picking blind a little for this weekend, but here goes. Just the seven

games: Storm v Knights (Friday, June 2, 6pm, AAMI Park, Melbourne): OK, an easy one for starters, you would think. Presumably the Storm’s big guns came through from Origin alright. But they don’t get much of a rest before saddling up here. The Knights have had a week off and have been threatening in recent games. Only danger is if the Storm mentally let their guard down. Little chance of that with a barking Bellamy. • Your Local Independent tips: Storm Eels v Warriors (Friday, June 2, 7.50pm, ANZ Stadium, Sydney): Two teams coming off a win last weekend. Bookies’ early money is on a comfortable win for the Eels. Hard to argue with

that. They are at home and Warriors’ consistency remains their biggest obstacle. • Your Local Independent tips: Eels Dragons v Tigers (Saturday, June 3, 3pm, ANZ Stadium, Sydney): The Dragons will be keen to get their ship back on course. They had the bye last round and a win before that, but would still be filthy at the three losses before then that robbed them of their brief ladder lead. Tigers can be dangerous but continual off-field dramas have their minds elsewhere. • Your Local Independent tips: Dragons Roosters v Broncos (Saturday, June 3, 5.30pm, Allianz Stadium, Sydney): Interesting. Both comfortably in the top eight, but both

coming off losses due to Origin commitments. Bookies have the home team (Roosters) as $1.70 to $2.15 favourites in the early market. Broncos have a massive Origin commitment, so although the troops will be back they will be very tired. But there is something about Origin time that brings out the superhuman performances. • Your Local Independent tips: Broncos Cowboys v Titans (Saturday, June 3, 7.30pm, 1300SMILES Stadium, Townsville): Cows have had a bye, but still likely to be without JT. Titans have also had a rest. Both have players backing up. Townsville factor will come in to play to spur on some tired Cowboys. • Your Local Independent tips: Cowboys Sea Eagles v Raiders (Sunday, June 4, 2pm, Lottoland, Sydney): Raiders finally found a ‘w’ while the Sea Eagles had a bye. Seems as through the Raiders have been in the wilderness 2nd June – 4th June 2017 for some time, but are only two points behind the Sea Eagles. This will be Friday 2nd June, 6pm, AAMI Park very close, however home ground will Storm vs Knights play a part. Friday 2nd June, 7.50pm, ANZ Stadium • Your Local Independent tips: Eels vs Warriors Sea Eagles Saturday 3rd June, 3pm, ANZ Stadium Bulldogs v Panthers (Sunday, Dragons vs Wests Tigers June 4, 4pm, ANZ Stadium, Sydney): Saturday 3rd June, 5.30pm, Allianz Stadium Panthers had the week off while the Roosters vs Broncos Dogs went down by a point to the Saturday 3rd June, 7.30pm, 1300SMILES Stadium Sharks. Origin injuries may play a role, Cowboys vs Titans but at least players have a few days Sunday 4th June, 2pm, Lottoland to recover. Panthers have finally put a Sea Eagles vs Raiders couple of wins together, while the Dogs Sunday 4th June, 4pm, ANZ Stadium have stalled. Bulldogs vs Panthers • Your Local Independent tips:

HUSTLER BALE FEEDERS

GROW-MASTER AERATORS

ELIMINATOR WEED-WIPER

The GROW-MASTER Aerator uses specially designed tines to shatter compacted soil to increase air, water and fertiliser penetration with a minimum of pasture damage. Grasses respond with deeper reaching, stronger roots, fertiliser is absorbed, rain runoff is completely eliminated and moisture is retained in the ground where needed. The result is HEALTHIER PASTURE and lots of it!

The ELIMINATOR WEED-WIPER has height adjustable wings that follows the ground contour for a consistent kill. It is ideal for Round-up, has low chemical use, uses a front ‘bruise bar’ for faster kill and does away with spray drift.

Reduce feed wastage and put money in the bank. 3PL, single and two-bale models available

• Reduce pasture damage • Feed is not contaminated with mud or dirt from trampling • Each cow gets equal access to feed, eliminating the runt • Cattle have clean pasture to feed on everyday, without having to feed in mud • Manure is spread throughout the pasture making use of these valuable nutrients • Seeds in the bale are effectively spread throughout the pasture
