Lovebirds forever

On March 15 Port Macquarie couple Thelma and Owen Dowsett will celebrate 60 years of marriage. You may often see them around town, but always together. According to Thelma that is one of the key reasons for their long and loving partnership. The couple are pictured above on their wedding day in England and today in Port Macquarie. After his impassioned speech at Kempsey Shire Council’s meeting last week over community concerns surrounding a dramatic increase to operations of a flying school at Kempsey Airport, Adam Ulrick, President of the Save Kempsey Airport Action Group, received a standing ovation from a vocal crowd

Kempsey community speaks Standing ovation for airport action boss

By SUE PATERICK OVER 200 people spilled out into the hallway at a recent Kempsey Shire Council (KSC) meeting, with some sitting on the floor when there were no more chairs. One of the hottest topics of the day was the Australian International Aviation College’s (AIAC) Development Application (DA) to increase flights at its flying school. If the DA goes ahead the clear blue skies above the Macleay Valley will buzz with about 30,000 flights a year from 6am to midnight seven days a week, even on public holidays. At a public meeting that attracted hundreds of disgruntled residents back in March 2017, the Northern Joint Regional Planning Panel (NJRPP) - the consent authority for the AIAC DA - moved to defer the proposed airport expansion, swayed by many community issues. These included the number of flights proposed, safety of local residents, concerns around transparency and community consultation from Kempsey Shire Council, concerns of an inadequate noise assessment, claims of incomplete and inaccurate economic data, and the impact on the peaceful life people have built in the Macleay Valley. Pollution from aviation fuel in drinking and

NO GAP • • • •

irrigation water and the soil were also concerns, as were health issues, social ramifications, traffic safety, invasion of privacy and ‘who owns the airport’. Dropping real estate values and building plans that take up the 20 private hangar spaces built with a $2.5 million grant from the Australian Government were other concerns. Adam Ulrick, President of the Save Kempsey Airport Action Group (SKAAG), was allowed to address the Council meeting last week and gave an impassioned speech that received a standing ovation. The issues Adam spoke on have been concerning the community from the very beginning, the first being concerns of a lack of transparency and community consultation from KSC. He explained how exasperated, angry and astonished the community was at not being fully-informed back in 2010 and during the following years. He also touched on tourism and Council’s successful Macleay Valley Food Bowl project and claims that would be in jeopardy with the pollution generated by 30,000 planes flying over the region’s prime agricultural land. Adam said Council’s entry into the Dougherty Awards in 2016 stated that agriculture was

the Macleay Valley’s largest industry, with 637 enterprises making up 29 per cent of the Macleay’s total businesses. “In 2012/2013 this sector contributed $76.5 million to the Macleay’s economy, making it the third largest dollar value sector behind retail and construction,” Adam said, during his speech in Council’s public forum. “And during the five-year period to 2016, 180 additional full-time equivalent jobs were generated locally.” Safety was a continuing concern, even before one of the AIAC’s Diamond DA40 aircraft crashed shortly after take-off from Port Macquarie Airport on Friday September 8 2017. According to a spokesperson from the Australian Transport Safety Bureau, the cause of the crash won’t be released to the public until May, 2018. Another disturbing issue Adam touched on was how frustrated the wider Macleay Valley community were that the NJRPP deferred the AIAC’s proposal back to Council for reassessment in March, 2017, and the status of that DA was still unknown. He then said that Council had the opportunity to commence some healing within the community if it supported a motion by Councillor Leo Hauville.

This motion called for any proposal to vary the conditions of DC T6-15-381 or subsequent DA for continued use of Kempsey Airport as a pilot training facility not be determined under delegated authority. After much discussion during this anything but ordinary Council meeting, Cr Hauville moved a new motion that included the first motion with several other points. Cr Bruce Morris seconded the motion. So the new resolution included the first motion above and a second point to ensure a community perception of openness and transparency. A good step in this direction stated that any application to modify DC T6-15-381 be notified to all persons who made a submission to Council regarding aircraft noise, or who made a submission to the more recent DA T6-16-444 for the pilot training facility. It also requested that these submissions be considered in the assessment of the application. The third point requested that a suitably qualified and independent person be engaged to undertake the assessment of the modification application and provide a recommendation to Council for determination. This new motion was carried unanimously to cheers and applause from the public gallery.

Shelly not pool perfect I READ with interest your article in 15th February edition of Your Local Independent newspaper calling for an ocean tidal pool at Shelly Beach lagoon. There are many reasons why I disagree that this is a viable location. The lagoon is our closest thing to a natural tidal pool at high tide which is great for swimming, mid tide for snorkelers and low tide is a wonderful opportunity for families with young children to explore the marine life in the shallow rock pools. I would hate to disrupt this natural beauty and it would be very hard to pass an environmental feasibility study on that alone. Shelly Beach also has unique rocks of a geological significance which would never pass the geotechnical report required. Parking is a huge issue at Shelly Beach. I could not get a parking spot there at 5pm on a Tuesday so I wouldn’t even try on a weekend or school holidays. What a nightmare! Another reason Shelly has not been looked at seriously is the absence of surf life saving patrol, which although not necessary, but a definite bonus to have in case of an emergency. Although I don’t think it’s a good site for a

tidal pool I do agree that it can be made into a safer swimming area with maybe the eco shark barriers being trialled in Western Australia at the moment - keeps sharks out and swimmers in. There have been several local rescues there in the lagoon especially near the mouth where swimmers are caught unaware in rips, unlike the surf the rips can be invisible. Also sightings of a grey nurse shark a few weeks ago gave local surfers a fright. There was a pod of stingrays when I swam there recently which anyone would keep a respectful distance. A cheaper alternative would be more rocks at the mouth of the lagoon to keep it safer for residents and tourists. The Port Macquarie tidal pool committee is focussing mainly on Town Beach and Flynns Beach for the best possible site within permissible environmental zoning, but might be guided by a feasibility study. I WAS expecting loads of change in 2018 and my gut tells me those changes are on the near horizon. We started the New Year off in newspaper land with a couple of small changes, one journalist out with injury and one admin person lost to the land of the long white cloud. Oh, and I currently have a sales person floating around the Pacific Islands on a cruise. Happy birthday Sonya! This week, Holly, my daughter, receptionist, sales support and the best personal assistant ever, has commenced studying for her degree in midwifery. Congratulations! It’s been a long time coming and you’ll be an amazing midwife. The flip-side, I’m going to miss having my other fulltime set of eyes and hands around. It’s also a lot of unexpected change in a short space of time. So, bear with me people, we’re a small team and I’ve go to re-arrange the re-arrangements to make this work. I also have the dubious honour of celebrating my 55th birthday this week. Dubious, because for some reason birthdays tend to herald massive changes in my life – good and bad – and I’m just not sure which way the scales are going to tip this year. I just know there’s more change coming and whichever way they tip – it’s probably going to be a mammoth event. As you all know, the last couple of years have been tough both personally and professionally and I’ve dragged myself through with as much effort as I can muster. I’ve got the personal stuff under control

DOWN I HAVE met my fair share of car dealers/salesmen. Sales tactics used were mainly below par and insincere in some cases. However, I have good fortune to deal with Jesse Shmidt at Warren Plowright Port Macquarie recently. He was very patient, honest and professional in every way possible. Both Jesse and Andrew had put up with my numerous questions and especially my hard nose bargaining with boundless patience. I ended up buying my car through them. I also notice that their used vehicles are very well priced and within market price range. I highly recommend Warren Plowright Toyota to all looking to buy. HOW come people who own a trailer can dump two free trailer loads of rubbish per year whilst owners of small sedans can only dump two boot loads? A solution to make this more equitable for all ratepayers could be to issue four tickets per household, with trailers requiring two tickets per load.

and now I have to work out where I go on a professional level. It’s a big decision! I really, truly love doing what I do. I love producing a paper for our community, keeping you all informed and up to date with the positive things in our world. It’s an honour and privilege to be able to serve the community, working with our local businesses and organisations to publicise their stories and to support local fundraising events. It’s also very exhausting! And I’m near the end of my tether. So, why am I even sharing this? Well, I need some help. I’ve come to a time in my life where I cannot continue giving of myself, without looking after myself. I’m not giving up. I’m just stretched to the absolute limit – mentally, physically and financially stretched. So I need some really good reasons to keep on fighting the good fight, so to speak, and keep providing the community with the region’s only independent, FREE, weekly, community newspaper. I’m open to feedback, constructive suggestions and criticisms, sound advice and support to ensure Your Local Independent remains the most sought-after community newspaper in our region. I just need a bloody good reason! That’s straight from the heart!

Bright young minds set to shine By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC THE spotlight is again on the best and brightest young minds in the Mid North Coast with the recent Young Guns Breakfast launch of the 2018 Luminosity Youth Summit. The breakfast, which was held in Port Macquarie, involved mentors and their ‘Young Guns’ who received a taste of what this year’s Youth Summit in July is all about. “Whatever their chosen field - sport, art, academic, community or simply a passion or potential - every Young Gun should have the opportunity to shine at this national forum,” said Kate Wood-Foye, Luminosity co-founder. Luminosity Youth Summit is a not for profit organisation that encourages youth leadership. The Summit is an event that runs annually over three days for people aged 15-25. They will participate in workshops and will be introduced to 22 inspirational speakers from a wide variety of backgrounds. Each year’s theme is ‘Dangerous Ideas for Success’ and each of the three days will have its own theme – ‘Inspire’, ‘Challenge’, and ‘Excel’. Sam Amini from Port Macquarie is just one of the many success stories that have come out of this event. In January, soccer-playing Sam was officially announced the newest squad member of the Under 20s Canberra FC at just 16 years of age, and just six months after attending Luminosity. “I was brought into the preliminary squad and trained with the first team and 20s until the final squad of 17 was announced,” said Sam. Sam is now living out his dream in Canberra full time where he trains with the Canberra FC three times a week as well as doing his own training. It wasn’t an easy decision for Sam or his family, who have moved to Canberra

Sam Amini

Young business guru Andrew Morello, centre, was a popular speaker at last year’s Luminosity Youth Summit to support his dream. He had lived in Port Macquarie his whole life. “It was something I knew needed to happen,” Sam explained. “I worked hard last year and really tried to improve things I wasn’t good at. I ended up emailing some clubs and I got invited to come and trial for some teams here. It was tough getting here mentally, dealing with rejections and injury. Which was some stuff that was mentioned at ‘Lumo’. “I’m blessed with a family who are willing to move with me to support me. But this is my dream and I have to make sacrifices in order to get there so it had to be done.” He says that Luminosity gave him the opportunity to hear from inspirational speakers. “Lumo was helpful for me,” said Sam. “There

were some really powerful points in the talks that I took away and used.” Each Young Gun who attends the event will write themselves a letter with steps to achieve a dangerous idea or goal. “I recently received the letter that we wrote to ourselves about our dangerous ideas,” said Sam. “In the time that it took to receive the letter I achieved that goal and more. “Now I’m moving to Canberra to play football so it’s crazy how the Lumo letter became a self-fulfilling prophecy.” This simple task has led many others who attend the Summit to go onto great things. “Posting the letters to Young Guns five months later is a good amount of time for attendees to reflect on their goals and set new purpose for the year ahead,” said Kate. “It’s a powerful reminder

to encourage the Young Guns to be accountable for the goals they set.” Start kicking your goals at the Luminosity Youth Summit event on July 25-27, 2018, at the Glasshouse and Rydges Port Macquarie. There are 350 spaces available for the Luminosity Youth Summit. Event organisers offer 100 positions to disadvantaged scholarship students to encourage positivity, leadership, entrepreneurship, and discussions on youth mental health. Young people can purchase or fundraise for their ticket to attend. Tickets are $295 for the three-day event. Registrations are open from March 1 so keep an eye out on the Luminosity Youth Summit Facebook Page or visit luminosityyouthsummit. com.au Sam Amini was sponsored to attend Luminosity 2017 by Yellow Brick Road.

CSU targets violence, harassment By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC

The proposed four-screen cinema in the Kempsey Central Shopping Complex

Cinema saga continues LIKE it or not, progress of a proposed fourscreen cinema in the Kempsey Central Shopping Complex is going forward. Back in November last year Kempsey Shire Council (KSC) voted five to four to support the Majestic cinema complex, and the allocation of $2 million in accumulated reserves to match $2 million in Federal Government grant funding. Under a new arrangement Council decided to enter into a Voluntary Planning Agreement (VPA) that would involve a oneoff contribution and no further liability for the costs of constructing and operating the proposed cinema complex under the previous Public-Private Partnership (PPP). During a lengthy and, at times, rowdy recent Council meeting, locals both for and against the project aired their views and concerns in the public forum. During her five minutes to speak local resident, Renea Rootes, asked the councillors if they were still going ahead with the project. Sher is strongly against Council contributing money to a private company instead of spending it on infrastructure. “The youth of our valley deserve better pools, sporting facilities and roads,” she said. “That’s what Council’s role is, not to give away millions.” This comment caused the bulging public galley to erupt into cheers. When it was his turn to speak President of the Macleay Valley Business Chamber, Gary Scott, said the Chamber continued to support the cinema project. He thought Council had addressed the community’s concerns in the VPA and believed a large investment in the CBD would stimulate further investment in the community. He also thought such an investment would

what Council’s role is, not to give away millions.

stop people leaving town to go to the movies in either Port Macquarie, Nambucca or Coffs. “More people using a cinema in Kempsey will generate business,” he added. After much discussion and rescinded motions because not all councillors support the cinema project as it stands, Council resolved to wait for a further response from the Office of Local Government (OLG) regarding the proposal to progress the cinema project under a VPA. After reading Council’s business papers for last week’s meeting it appears the OLG, who slammed Council’s previous funding model of a PPP, was still not happy. In a letter to Council on December 18 2017 the OLG pointed out that clause 14 of the draft VPA referred to ‘commercial arrangements with cinema operator’, and reminded Council that under the Local Government Act (LGA) the definition of a PPP included a ‘contract or understanding’. The letter said that while VPA may be excluded from the definition of a PPP under the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act, an arrangement between Council and its ‘commercial partners’ Gowings to deliver the Cinema Project presently under review may still be a PPP. The OLG was concerned that the approach then being taken by Council may have been an attempt to avoid its other obligations under the LGA, and asked Council to provide it with eight separate documents within 21 says.

Prior to a decision on the cinema at last week’s Council meeting, General Manager, Craig Milburn, advised that the tabled draft VPA had been modified since it was first discussed in November and that Council’s position had been strengthened. “Our legal team has renegotiated a number of key elements of the proposed VPA, such as making it clear that Gowings, as the owner of the land, is responsible for engaging a cinema operator,” he said. “This means there is no risk of Council having to source and fund an operator.” Another significant amendment to VPA was that payments of Council’s $2 million contribution would now be phased into instalments with the final $600,000 only paid when the cinema commences operation. “This is essentially a form of security against performance,” Mr Milburn said. Council also moved that a response would be sought as quickly as possible to allow the draft VPA to be placed on exhibition for a period of 28 days. It was also moved that submissions received during the exhibition period would be reported back to Council before the VPA could be implemented and the project proceeded. The draft VPA will be available from Council’s website and Customer Service, and members of the public are invited to make submissions on the document’s terms.

CHARLES Sturt University’s Port Macquarie campus is making a stand against sexual assault and harassment. ‘Playing Right’ is a compulsory face-toface training program offered by Charles Sturt University for key student groups, including new students living on campus. “The program covers sexuality, sex and gender, myths and stereotypes and what they mean in our community; consent and rights and responsibilities; skills as an active bystander; options on campus and in the community for people who have experienced sexual violence,” said a CSU spokesperson. “The two-hour sessions have been running since February 19 for new students living on campus and have been run on each Charles Sturt University campus, including Port Macquarie.” These sessions are also compulsory for other key student groups such as Head Residents, Residential Advisors, Residential Tutors and Sustainability Advisers, as well as O Week Coordinators, O Week Leaders and SRC members. “In line with the University’s values of Insightful, Inclusive, Impactful and Inspiring, Charles Sturt University is improving the way we respond to these issues and support students who experience sexual assault and harassment,” said Jenny Roberts, Charles Sturt University Deputy Vice-Chancellor. CSU hopes that these programs will not only educate and assist students from the University, but will also spread the message into the community. “CSU students are members of our local communities so we hope the knowledge they receive from the university’s training packages are taken into the communities in which we live,” said a CSU spokesperson. Ms Roberts said the program will improve the opportunity for the university to have a greater impact on issues of communication, consent and relationships, “It will especially assist with the new students who need that extra level of support and guidance in navigating the transition to oncampus life,” said Ms Roberts. “We want all Charles Sturt University students to be able to enjoy their time at university and have fun, but above all be safe and at all times respectful.” By the end of Orientation Week 2018, 1700 student leaders on six campuses will have completed the ‘Playing Right’ program. FROM THE MAYOR A weekly conversation with Mayor Peta Pinson It never ceases to amaze me how quickly technology is shaping the way we live, and the new advancements that are changing the way we work and communicate. Whilst I’m no ‘techie’, I have taken interest in how far the technology that we take for granted has moved forward, in such a short period of time. Did you know that until the mid 90s the internet did not exist as we know it today, and now there are over 200 million websites worldwide? It only seems like yesterday that we were waiting for that annoying dial tone to end, so we could get our home internet to connect. 14 years ago Facebook was developed at Harvard College in the USA to help students recognize each other, and now there are more than 2 billion users … and the first

touchscreen smart phone wasn’t available until 2006. Whilst we may not by Google, Council is also embracing technology to help run our business, improve the efficiency of how we operate and to provide our community with tools that make dealing with us much easier. If you haven’t been to our website lately, I encourage you to jump online and have a look around. You can sign up to receive rates notices electronically, have your say on projects, report an issue, use our interactive maps and sign up to our e-newsletters. You can also catch up on the latest news, see the community events that happening, and don’t forget to use our search function to make it easy to find what you’re looking for. One of the new features on our website is ‘what we’re up to’, which has information on some of the key projects

pmhc.nsw.gov.au that are underway – from roads to parks, water to waste and lots in between. You can scroll through all projects or just those taking place in your part of our region. New information is added as the projects progress, so it’s easy to stay up-to-date. Our Facebook page is also a great way to stay connected, and we provide regular updates on a broad range of topics that are of community interest. Whether it’s helping us with everyday tasks, managing our finances, online research or staying connected with family and friends there is little doubt that technology is here, and here to stay. I hope you will take advantage of how Council is embracing technology and I look forward to keeping you up to date. Have a great week, Peta.

60 years of ‘togetherness’ By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC TWO Port Macquarie lovebirds are about to celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary. You’ve probably seldom seen Thelma and Owen Dowsett walking around town by themselves. Their ‘togetherness’ is just one of the keys to their longlasting marriage. “Everybody that knows us around town here knows we are always together,” said Thelma. “They say we never do anything separate, we are always together, and that’s how we like it.” Thelma met Owen at just 17 years of age - he was two years her senior - at a carnival fair in Essex, England. “I met Owen when he was in the air force and we were just teenagers,” said Thelma. “It was love at first sight and we just knew from the moment we met that it was meant to be. Sparks were flying as they say and we have been inseparable ever since. “We were engaged for two years and then we got married on March 15, just before my 20th birthday.” What keeps their marriage strong after 60 years? Two key ingredients.

“I think you’ve got to be honest and loyal,” Thelma explained “You have your ups and downs and the odd argument like everybody, that’s normal, but we’re just always true to each other and honest with each other. “I also love everything about him, he’s a good person. And that comes from his loyalty and I appreciate the fact that he has overlooked any of my faults and has been loyal to me.” Owen seemed to disagree as he replied: “She hasn’t got any faults at all.” The couple moved together to Australia in 1966 and lived in the Blue Mountains where Owen worked as a postman and Thelma as a chef. They then moved to Port Macquarie where they reside today.

“We had been living in the beautiful Blue Mountains where we worked and then we bought a unit in Port Macquarie in 1984 so we would come up for holidays,” said Thelma. “Then we moved up here permanently in 1990. We just love the climate here, as you get older, you like the warmth.” Family and friends of Thelma and Owen will be joining in the celebration of the 60th anniversary. “The actual anniversary is on Thursday, March 15, so we will just be having a dinner for two in Westport,” said Thelma. “And then that weekend our family has planned the celebration for us so we will be going down to Sydney to celebrate together.

“We have both our children coming, Michael Dowsett and Janet Lawson. Janet will be flying up from Adelaide. We also have our five grandchildren coming and this year we will be having our third great grandchild who will be born just a couple of months after the anniversary. I’m also turning 80 a month after our anniversary, so it’s quite a big year for us.” Thelma and Owen have already been receiving letters from local members and speakers of Parliament for their milestone marriage achievement, but they are just waiting on their letter from the Queen, which, like their marriage, they say they will treasure.

New Wauchope pontoon is up and floating BOATERS and recreational fishers in the Hastings Valley now have improved access to the Hastings River at Wauchope with the new floating pontoon at the Rocks Ferry Reserve now complete. The new pontoon will improve boat launching, reduce waiting times, improve safety, and make access to the river easier. In the coming weeks, users of the new pontoon can also look forward to an accessible pathway that will be constructed to allow for safe access to and from the boat ramp. The construction of the new pontoon was made possible by a joint funding partnership between the State Government via the NSW Boating Now Program ($80,000) and Port Macquarie-Hastings Council ($40,000) as part of the Recreation Action Plan 2017 – 2025. “We’ve been working closely with the RMS to identify where improvements can be made to local boating facilities across our region,” said Director Dan Croft. “Our towns and villages are built around rivers, lakes and entrances to the ocean, with boating and fishing popular past times for our local community, and the many tourists who visit each year. “The conditions are perfect for boating at the moment, so to be able to open the new pontoon ahead of time is great news,” Mr Croft said. The Member for Oxley, Melinda Pavey MP, said the Boating Now program is delivering new boat ramps, pontoons and jetties, car and trailer parking facilities at key points across the electorate. “The NSW Government is working on these projects in partnership with local councils to make water activities safer and more accessible,” Mrs Pavey said. The upgrade to the Rocks Ferry Boat Ramp adds to the recent announcement of planned $1.09 million rejuvenation to two boat ramps in Camden Haven, also being funded in partnership between Council and the NSW Government’s Boating Now Program. For more information on the full list of recreational facilities that can be enjoyed across the region, visit pmhc.nsw.gov.au/boat-ramps or call Council on 6581 8111. Be part of choir’s 2nd birthday CAN you believe that it’s already two years since we started the Absolutely Everybody Choir of the School of Hard Knocks? Yep, time is flying along as always and so you’re invited to a special celebration concert with us on the April 7. Marie van Gend, Ruth Allen and Miriam Lattimore, our musical team, has done an amazing job bringing the choir to a wonderful level of skill, and they’re always keen for more newcomers to join. Visit rehearsals on Tuesday mornings at the Hollingworth St Conservatorium of Music, from 10am-12.30pm followed by lunch altogether, in the old scout hall building. This program is part of a whole range of Creative Arts for Recovery activities, including painting, sculpture, jewellery making, pottery, you name it. Just as Dr Jonathon Welch aims for in all of the School of Hard Knocks branches around the country. Come and bring your talents to share with peers who all have life challenges to deal with. We help each other get well by having a fabulous time in the creative space. And that leads on to the mention of our No. 4 Albert Circuit MakerSpace, next to Kids Crazy Maze, where much of this parallel activity will happen. Please come and check it out and tell us what you’re interested in creating. Give us a call or come on over. Phone: 65837288 and check out the website at www.portace.com.au

Stamp duty cut proves popular LOCAL First Home Buyers Taking Up Stamp Duty Relief: First home buyers in the area are continuing to take up stamp duty relief from the NSW Liberals and Nationals Government as new figures are released for December and January. Latest figures show that since the policy began in July 2017, approximately 1,314 first home buyers have taken up stamp duty concessions or exemptions in the North Coast region with 124 of those people from the Port Macquarie and Camden Haven areas. New figures released by Revenue NSW show that take up of the First Home Buyers Assistance Scheme has now reached more than 19,000 since July 2017 when the package commenced as part of the NSW Budget. The package means that first home buyers for both new and existing homes for properties priced up to $650,000 are exempt from paying stamp duty and can access a reduction in stamp duty for first homes priced between $650,000 and $800,000. I am delighted there was more than a tripling in the number of people who have been accessing the stamp duty relief since the measure came into effect in July, compared to the same period last year.

STATE MATTERS

With Leslie Williams State Member for Port Macquarie

Housing affordability is a major issue across the state and so it is heartening to see that this package will allow people to take a step closer to securing the keys to their new home. The Liberal and Nationals government is focused on cutting the costs of living, whether that’s the price of your child’s weekend sport through the Active Kids Rebate, lowering bus fares, the energy rebate to help put downward pressure on energy bills or the cost of buying your first home. Does Your Group Need Grant Funding?: So that I can continue to provide information about grants and funding opportunities to local organisations and sporting groups, I would really appreciate it if organisational secretaries could contact my office with updated contact information. CANBERRA CONNECTIONS With Dr David Gillespie Federal MP for Lyne

THE Federal Coalition Government will provide two new ground-breaking flu vaccines to over three million Australians aged 65 years and over - free of charge. These new vaccines will help provide stronger protection for over 65s. The vaccines have been fast-tracked to ensure lives are saved and that Australians over 65 years of age receive greater protection. More than 90 per cent of the 1,100 flu related deaths in 2017 were by people aged over 65 years of age. This is our Government’s direct response to last year’s horrific flu season and is aimed squarely at saving lives. We must continue to do all we can to protect those Australians who are most at risk. The new vaccines – Fluad® and Fluzone High Dose® – were registered in Australia to specifically provide increased protection for people aged 65 years and older. From April, 2018, both vaccines will be available through the National Immunisation Program following a recommendation from the Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee. These new vaccines have been specifically made for the elderly.

Strumming origins of ukulele THE town I live in has a very active ukulele club. Probably lots of towns have active ukulele clubs. Ukulele (sometimes spelt ukelele) was a name originally given to a person, rather than an instrument. The person I am thinking of was Edward William Purvis, an Englishman living in Hawaii. Purvis, a man of small and lively stature, took such delight in playing the ukulele and played it so enthusiastically that the Hawaiians called him ukulele, the leaping flea. The name eventually was transferred to the instrument. There are other stories about how the ukulele came to Hawaii, including the story of how a man was so overjoyed at seeing land after four months at sea he jumped overboard and began playing Hawaiian folk songs. That might have happened, but… The instrument was introduced to Hawaii in 1879. Until then it was called in Portugal the machete de braga The instrument so I understand was originally developed in the Madeira Islands of Portugal. The machete itself is a descendent of the early European and middle eastern plucked stringed instruments and is a member of the guitar family. The machete was taken into Hawaii by Portuguese immigrants, mainly from Madeira and the Azores, who moved to the islands to

work in the sugar cane fields in the late 1800s. It carried several names, chiefly the machete, or braghuina. At that time Edward Purvis, attached to the court of King Kalakaua, started playing. King Kalakaua wanted to develop a Hawaiian culture in opposition to missionaries who allegedly saw Hawaiians as uncivilised Queen Liliuokalani described it as “the gift that came here”. But local Hawaiians were so taken with Purvis’s playing and his fingers moving up and down the instrument that the name soon became ukulele, at least in the Hawaiian islands. In 1957 American Speech said the Hawaiians called Purvis ukulele because of his lively playing and antics. From what I understand, the uku refers to flea and the lele to jumping. Purvis popularised the instrument. In February-March of 1896 the Hawaiian said: “Then comes the twang of the ukulele, the

soft, melodious cadence of the hula song”. Hawaiians had trouble spelling the ukulele. In one instance, in a collection of poems, the ukulele is spelt eukaleli. (Incidentally, the flea can jump more than 200 times its own length, which is similar to a man jumping a skyscraper. I just thought I would mention that – but don’t try it at home.) The ukulele reached the mainland of the USA at the Panama Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco. In Canada it was seen as an inexpensive teaching instrument. It moved to Japan where it became popular following World War 2. In the United Kingdom George Formby made it popular. In the USA before and after the war it became popular. The New York World said in 1915 said that those in the know said that the uke (they spelt it euk) did more than anything else to put the lulu in Honolulu. There was a slight decline in the instrument’s popularity until the late 1990s. Ukuleles are generally made of wood, although some other materials were seen in some ukuleles. But so far as I can tell Purvis gave his name to one of the cheapest instruments around. lauriebarber.com; lbword@midcoast.com.au

Do I have to pay a lump sum for my aged care facility?

Get the right advice for you NAVIGATING the financial obligations of aged care facilities can be overwhelming and confusing. One question we are repeatedly asked by our clients is: ‘Do we have to pay the lump sum refundable deposit to be accepted in our aged care facility?’ Financial Advisor at Morgans Port Macquarie Chris Young says that what many people don’t realise is that they can pay a daily equivalent amount, similar to paying rent, or a combination of the quoted lump sum and daily amounts. Young explains: “Everyone has different resources in terms of income and assets. This is why it is so important to obtain customised advice to ascertain which option is most suitable to your financial situation. “As advisers, our aim is to ensure that we maximise the existing resources of our clients to ensure they get the level of care they desire.” There are many financial solutions available to people looking to transition into aged care facilities. For some people it may involve the sale of their home while others may choose to retain

their home and make daily payments to the aged care facility. Some people may be in a position where they can sell existing investment assets to pay the lump sum deposit. Alternatively, they may choose to retain their investment assets and use the earnings to pay aged care facility costs in daily amounts as opposed to the lump sum. Young says: “It’s also worth bearing in mind that the way you structure the payment of your aged care facility deposit, can have an impact on your potential age pension entitlements.” To help people navigate the financial considerations involved in planning for Aged Care, Morgans are running free information seminars. To attend one of these seminars, please call 6583 1735 to reserve your seat or visit morgans.com.au/portmacquarie. (Chris Young AR 000294648. Flickerfest back in Port

A precession of women’s golfers hit the fairways at Port Macquarie Golf Club

Wanted: female golfers! It’s also great because of the friendships I’ve made and all the laughs that we’ve had. It’s a great social activity and I’d recommend it to anyone.

By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC THE Port Macquarie Golf Club is putting out the pink carpet for women’s golfers. Their upcoming Pink Jacket Day is all about having a go at a new sport and having some fun with fellow female golfers. “We would like to see more female golfers on the greens,” said Roberta Hogan, Publicity Officer for the Port Macquarie Ladies Golf Committee. “Women golfers are really under represented throughout Australia and I don’t think Port Macquarie is an exception. “There are certainly more men here than women, so we would really like to encourage more women to get involved.” Unfortunately the numbers are declining generally for golf memberships around the nation. “Yes, numbers for golf memberships for both men and women have declined across Australia in recent years so it’s important to get people involved and playing the sport again,” explained Roberta. “We would just like to encourage all women to give it a go. If they’ve ever thought about it, this is a day when it’s going to be a fun atmosphere. It doesn’t matter if they’ve got a handicap or not. “What we will do is have teams of four - three inexperienced golfers and one experienced

golfer. They will play a nine-hole Ambrose (the four golfers play as a team with each hitting off from the best-placed ball after every shot).” Roberta considers herself still new to golf and

has been playing for five years. She says the sport does wonders for her health. “Golf helps me remain active and I think I’m fitter from it because I walk the 18 holes,” Roberta said. “It’s also great because of the friendships I’ve made and all the laughs that we’ve had. It’s a great social activity and I’d recommend it to anyone. The winner of the Pink Jacket Day will also get her named embroidered on the jacket.” So join in with women golfers from around the Mid North Coast for the annual Pink Jacket Day on Monday, March 12, at the Port Macquarie Golf Club. Golfers will enjoy a 9 hole Ambrose followed by refreshments. Golfers will meet at the pro shop at 12.30pm for a 1pm hit off. The day is just $20, allinclusive. Inexperienced and new golfers who want tips on playing golf can meet Belinda, the club professional, near the flags/practice area at 12noon. Joggers are fine to wear if players do not have golf shoes. To register or for any questions, call Elizabeth Fraser on 02 6582 4442 or Roberta Hogan on 02 6582 0741. When registering, please advise Elizabeth or Roberta if you don’t have golf clubs, as there are a limited number available.

Conditions create tough weekend for Port sailors

Paul Robertson and Warren Sykes in Slam Dunc, who won the Tasar TT

PORT Macquarie Sailing Club hosted NSW Tasar Association’s TT3 regatta (Travellers Trophy) last weekend, as well as race six of the club’s summer series on Sunday afternoon. Saturday’s races were run under sunny skies in a building north easter and a slowing run-in tide. By the time the 2nd back-to-back race was run, many of the crews had had enough, so the 3rd race was held off for Sunday. The breeze had eased to a lightish easterly for the Tasars’ 3 short back-to-back races in the runin tide at midday on Sunday, but a passing storm killed off the dying breeze during the afternoon’s club race preventing a number of boats from completing the course. The Tasar TT was won by local crew Paul Robertson and Warren Sykes in Slam Dunc after a close tussle all weekend against second placed Kerry Fyfe and Michael O’Brien in Faking Clever from Woollahra Sailing Club. Chris Parkinson and Mel Benson in Agamemnon From Speers Point were third, then came Malcolm Handel and Beatriz Calvete in Something Cool from Northbridge, Simon and Phil Gandy in Voyager and Stuart Symons and Jeff Walsh in Big Bang both from Port Macquarie, Graham and Alice Baxendale in Baxon Baxoff from Speers Point, and Phillip and Blake Lillehagen in Elmo from Port Macquarie. Local boat Big Bang won on handicap ahead of Agamemnon, Voyager, Slam Dunc, Faking

Clever, Something Cool, Elmo, and Baxon Baxoff. With a number of club members busy with the Tasars and others less than impressed with the wind outlook, only a small fleet contested the club’s race 6 of the summer series. Tony Kuhn on Stella was the only catamaran to complete the shortened course for that class, gaining both yardstick and handicap points after Jack Corthals on Harpic pulled out in the dying breeze. The only boat to complete the full course was Elmo in the monohulls. Simon Gandy, now with daughter Elsa as crew in Voyager, had arranged to only do one lap and have his lap time multiplied as he had to leave early for another commitment. Because the breeze was dying, everyone was interested to see whether Elmo was still going to be fast enough to get the win, and they did just make it by 36 seconds. Tony Walker in Deep Purple and Sharon Carney and Steve Couch in Jupiter succumbed to the dying breeze and did not finish. Elmo also beat Voyager on handicap. Next weekend is the Harold Dick Memorial Marathon starting at 11am. The race will start at the club, round a mark off the Town Green about midday, then sail to a mark at the Pacific Highway before finishing back at the club. Ron Apps is rostered on duty.
