We will never forget! By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC
AGE may have wearied 92-year-old Lewis Green just a little, but not enough to stop him being part of his favourite celebration – Anzac Day. Each year the World War Two veteran and his wife Pam, 82, are a central part of the Port Macquarie Anzac Day parade. They will be there next Tuesday (April 25). And they love nothing more than to see and greet the hundreds of young faces who are eager
to honour our very own war heroes. “Lewis wears the same navy blue jacket and his medals every year on Anzac day,” Pam says proudly. “It is just wonderful the number of school children that follow the march, we get very good crowds here in Port Macquarie, they all get really involved.” Lewis is no longer able to march in the parade, but he still takes part. • Continued Page 10

Busking for the orphans Cameron’s bid to help kids in SA

supportive and encouraging. The teachers at Hastings Public School are great and all the kids in my class are keen to donate stuff for me to take to the orphans.
By SANDY MACKENZIE BUSKING to raise funds to buy ukuleles for orphans in South Africa is not something you will find a lot of 11-year-old kids doing in this day and age. Let me introduce you to Cameron Alford, a Year 6 student from Hastings Public School who will be doing just that for the month of May. A budding young musician with a real zest for life, Cameron wants to raise as much money as he can – to buy as many ukuleles as he can leading up to a trip to Johannesburg in June. You may ask, what inspires an 11-year-old boy to go to such lengths to help someone less fortunate than themselves? Spend half an hour with Cameron and it is clear - he just comes from good stock, a family who practices good old-fashioned values and possesses a social conscience. Mum Raylene Alford, a former Qantas worker, will accompany Cameron to South Africa in June where they will join with the Qantas Cabin Crew Team (QCCT) to help at Nkosi’s Haven, one of three projects run in Johannesburg by the QCCT. The QCCT is a registered charity of volunteers from all areas of the Qantas network, which was founded in 1979 by long-haul flight attendant Laurie Curley. Ian Leeson, a Qantas flight attendant and QCCT Project Manager, South Africa, said: “We have three projects in Johannesburg – two preschools that we give assistance to. We help with teaching materials, groceries, school excursions for the teachers and children. We also help with renovations and painting when required. Our third project is assisting Nkosi’s Haven, an orphanage specifically for destitute HIV/AIDS-infected mothers and their children. “2017 marks the 15th Anniversary of the partnership between QCCT and Nkosi’s Haven and the trip in June will be made more special, as we will have some of the original crew included in the team of 30 or more volunteers participating. “Over the 15-year partnership we have, with the ongoing help of UNICEF, assisted in building a music room, large fully operational chicken coops and renovated and painted some of the cottages at the Haven. Just to name a few projects.”
“
Look out for Cameron Alford busking around Port Macquarie in the next few weeks and help him raise money to buy ukuleles for orphans in South Africa “The main celebration will be held on the 7th June. We will have two crews on the ground at the same time. “Founder of the Haven, Gail Johnson, is planning a fantastic anniversary, inviting local
and international dignitaries to attend. The attendees will be entertained by the Soweto Gospel Choir, local dance and drumming group ‘The Friendly Drummers’. Our own crews and volunteers - some who are talented musicians

and songwriters - will perform as well. “This is where Cam will get to ‘shine’ and showcase his musical talent at the event.” For Cameron, being able to combine his passion and natural talent for music with his large heart to help others is purely a blessing. This is not the first time Cameron has busked to raise money to help someone else. He raised funds to help a little boy with neuroblastoma, Raphael, reach his dreams and get to soccer’s World Cup in 2014. Sadly, Raphael passed away last year. “My school has been really supportive and encouraging,” said Cameron. “The teachers at Hastings Public School are great and all the kids in my class are really keen to donate stuff for me to take to the orphans. It’s great!” So, keep your eyes peeled and ears open for Cameron busking around Port Macquarie in May. You’ll most likely hear him before you see him around Port Central entrance or Coles in Hayward Street. Get behind Cam and donate so he can share his love of music with the orphans in Nkosi’s Haven and encourage him for his awesome values. If you can’t find Cam but want to help you can contact mum, Raylene: offtherayles@ hotmail.com or drop your donations in to Your Local Independent, 3/60 Lord St, Port Macquarie. Where is Council’s money invested? I AND presumably many other residents have been reading excouncillor Adam Roberts’ “Rinse Cycle” with growing concern. The council’s current cash stockpile is claimed by Mr. Roberts to stand at around $239 million and has been increasing at a staggering $25 million per annum in recent years. This equates to an extremely attractive return of more than 10 per cent and suggests higher risk investment!
Wauchope streets THANK you Sandy for such a great paper - go girl - and to Mr Roberts for his info on our council. I would like to invite the mayor or any and every councillor to do a visit to Wauchope. Please feel free to use Wallace Street into Webb Street and around to Bransdon Street. All in the CBD, both Webb and Bransdon are heavily used each day with buses, semis and traffic. These two streets could win awards for the years of council neglect. Many have left their skin in Bransdon Street from a day shopping. If it’s not the condition of the road they use to trip, it’s the footpath on the
Why is council stashing this money away and where is it invested? All levels of government should aim to be cost-revenue neutral, and this can be achieved by local government where much-needed road improvements and other basic infrastructure needs roughly balanced income streams. This apparent financial anomaly needs to be explained to ratepayers as a matter of urgency. Alarmingly, Mr. Roberts tells
readers that eight out of nine councillors voted earlier this year in favour of seeking a permanent Special Rate Variation (SRV) through IPART to raise rates this coming year by more than five per cent ‘permanently’. Surely IPART will want to know the magnitude of any funds stashed away and accordingly reject PMHC’s application? The Drew council was sacked over mismanagement in relation to the Glasshouse. It is noted that
Mr. Roberts, as a part of his recent portfolio responsibilities, was involved in overseeing Glasshouse activities. Perhaps in the next “Rinse Cycle” Mr. Roberts can enlighten ratepayers on how much is still owed on the Glasshouse while Council’s attention appears to be focussed on highly lucrative investment opportunities? east side which is cracked up, uneven and broken. Walk to Young and look at the broken path, round into Cameron, plenty of trip hazards there for you. Given you represent every single rate-payer, renter, investor, local business in the Hastings, isn’t it time you showed it? If ratepayers hold quarter of a billion in collected fees they have the right to ask you to spend it wisely and within the budget you went to the election with. Infrastructure money wisely spent reaps rewards not criticism such as you are now facing from those who pay your wage for work we now wait on! Name supplied

savings to recoup over the next four years. Letters of demand are being sent out at an alarming rate claiming monies owed have to be repaid or debt collectors will be called in. Often, those receiving these odious letters do not, in fact, owe any money. Centrelink staff are being run off their feet trying to sort out these errors. This is not the start to the year this group deserves nor expected. Meanwhile in Canberra, we have politicians overclaiming expenses and viewing this source of funding as an entitlement even if it were unrelated to work. We deserve better representation than this. TO all of the lovely staff at the Port Macquarie Base Hospital for their devotion and care given to my Mum this month. Every single person we came in contact with from arrival to departure were so caring and comforting, we are forever grateful. The work that you all do is so important and the quality of care that was provided during Mum’s stay was absolutely outstanding.
I WANT to thank the lady whose quick thinking prevented another car reversing into the front of my car outside the Senior Citizens Club.
Thumbs Up TO all the ‘good neighbours’ who do not interfere with the native bush vegetation behind their Chepana Street homes. You realise that it’s an asset that’s best left alone as it helps protect your property from the encroaching weather and tides. The devastation when there is no vegetation to protect the foreshore is only too obvious further north.
Thumbs Down TO the young male who disregarded the road rules. What would the last thought be in that head of your’s a nanosecond before you, your passenger or a pedestrian went through the windscreen?
Thumbs Up A HEARTFELT thank you to Dr Richards and all medical staff in the ICU. You are a dedicated team of experts in your chosen field who displayed a high standard of professionalism, duty of care and in treatment given to my dear partner, Mr Christopher Whitbread.
Thumbs up TO the management and staff of Hastings Specialty Furniture, Hastings River Drive. My wife and I encountered a problem with furniture we had bought in Sydney over 12 years ago and approached them for advice. The people there went out of their way, not only to advise us but to assist us in rectifying the problem. Well done guys and thanks!

WHETHER you celebrate Easter or not, the long weekend is always a great time to unwind, spend time with family and friends, catch-up around the house, watch mindless TV, or read a book. Whatever the case may be, I hope you enjoyed it! For someone who spent about 50 per cent of the weekend in my PJ’s, I had a reasonably productive – yet still relaxing weekend! The most exciting thing that happened? (Apart from lolling around in my PJ’s for half the weekend) I went shopping with my daughter Holly and her friend Katie for Holly’s wedding dress. We’d tried a few places on the Gold Coast last month and Holly has been up to Coffs Harbour looking, but not with too much success. So, we thought we might try Taree and Wingham, on the offchance we might find something. OMG! Firstly, you could not fault the service of either shop we visited. The girls Nicky and Kristy, at 2 Love & 2 Honour, Bridal and Formal Wear – you are awesome and visiting your store was a great experience! Thank you. Shirley at Dress Up in Wingham – just wow! You made buying a wedding dress, (off the rack, I might add), the easiest shopping experience of my life! Holly walked out of your shop the happiest I have seen her in years! Thank you! We’ll be back!

WELCOME to 2017 and what will the year bring for our piece of paradise? Well, so far it has meant that the large pensioner population here, who set aside a little bit extra each week over their lifetime for their retirement, have been penalized from January 1 by having the pension reduced or scrapped altogether. This affects about 330,000 nationwide and a lot of our locals. In our region, which is overrepresented by the numbers on Newstart benefit, this vulnerable group is being hounded by Centrelink which has a target of $4 billion in

Buddhist group offers course By SUE PATERICK THE Kempsey Buddhist Meditation Group is an organisation looking to help people enhance and deepen their quality of life. Part of the Triratna Buddhist Community, the group comes together once a week to learn and practice the art of meditation and to undertake study in the Buddha’s teachings. From Saturday, April 22 the group will also be holding a six-week course to teach Peace and Calm: Mindfulness for Living. It also regularly offers courses in mindfulness, meditation and Buddhism. The Triratna Buddhist Order and Community is a worldwide movement of men and women who try to engage with Buddha’s teachings in the conditions of the modern world. The movement is led by more than 2000 ordained members, who live neither as monastics or lay people, and of these there are five in the Macleay Valley. The movement is not aligned to one tradition or school but draws selectively from the whole range of Buddhist tradition: Theravada, Mahayana and Vajrayana. It has 27 Buddhist centres around the world. At the age of 29, Siddhartha Gautama left his home in the royal place of Northern India in 563 BCE when he realised that wealth and luxury did not guarantee happiness. For the next six years he searched for the key to happiness through his exploration of the different teachings, religions and philosophies of that time. During this journey he discovered a way to work with his mind and heart to release himself from suffering and obtained enlightenment at the age of 35, becoming Buddha - the Awakened One. For the rest of his life he taught what he had learnt. His teachings were called The Dharma,
The Kempsey Buddhist Meditation Group serenely practising this ancient tradition are (clockwise from back) Nicki, Beth, Dianne, David, Gambhiraja, Jody, Beth and Luke which means The Truth, and later became known as Buddhism. Buddha understood that all beings, whether humans, animals or insects, have a shared goal to be happy and free from suffering. He realised the way to lasting happiness was not to rely on external factors of life such as wealth or fame, but to look within ourselves and change our perceptions of the world. According to the Buddhist Council of NSW, most people think their problems exist ‘out there’ but Buddhism teaches us that happiness stems from our perception of reality. “The paradox is that most of us find ourselves unknowingly creating conditions that lead us
back to the dissatisfaction we so desperately seek to eliminate,” the Buddhist Council said. “Buddhism points to the underlying causes of our day-to-day problems and teaches a graduated path to liberate us from suffering.” Some of these daily practices include meditation, mindfulness in daily life, study and chanting. The Kempsey Buddhist Meditation Group meets for meditation on Monday nights at the CWA Hall on corner of Verge and John Streets in Kempsey from 5.15pm. Afterward they share a light supper then hold a Dharma discussion, which is optional. Cost is by donation.
If you would like to learn more about the Buddha’s teachings, learn meditation, or enrol in the six-week mindfulness course then contact Beth on 0414 666 263 or go to buddhisminkempsey.wixsite.com The Buddha’s five training principles for living: - Try not to harm other living beings or yourself, practice loving-kindness. - Practice open-handed generosity. - Live with stillness, simplicity, and contentment. - Speak the truth kindly, helpfully and harmoniously. - Develop a clear and radiant mind.

The concept theme that is published in the Expression of Interest is ‘nature of our valley’. We are trying to achieve a story about our valley and our history.
By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC KEMPSEY will soon be welcoming its visitors with an iconic sculpture, a little different to the famous Big Banana. Kempsey Shire Council is seeking Expressions of Interest from artists around Australia for the new iconic ‘gateway project’. “The idea about the gateway sculptures is that they are going to be prominent works of art that are really going to provide visitors and also our residents, landmarks to Kempsey,” said Olivia a Kempsey council spokesperson. “They will tell a story about our history, our place and our community. “It has to be appropriate to this site in regards to size. We aren’t looking for concepts of designs, we are just looking for artists to send through their CVs and examples of their work. “From there the Expressions Of Interests will be short listing artists who will then be provided with the full brief. In that brief there will be more details about the site and also about the design of the sculptures.” Although there are many ‘Big’ sculptors around Australia such as the Big Banana, the Big Prawn, the Big Pineapple, Kempsey will be keeping in theme with what is important to the community. “We do have a theme that the artists do have to respond to, so that we don’t end up with a Big Banana,” said the spokesperson. “The concept theme that is published in the Expression of Interest is ‘nature of our valley’, so in the research and consultation that we did that is the theme that emerged from the research - forests and the Macleay River. We are trying to achieve a story about our valley and our history.” Obviously Kempsey is hoping to get some local artists on board for the project. “The Expressions Of Interests are open to

all artists in Australia,” Olivia said. “We do have a selection criteria. We have a panel made up of people from the community who will be assessing all the applications. We have suggested that it would be ideal that local fabricators will be used in the creation of the works, so it really just depends on the merit of the applications that we get.” The council has a total budget of $140,000 that has to cover the two sculptors, the material costs, the landscaping, the artist fees, and engineering, insurance, and the installation. “The Expressions Of Interest close on the 28th of April and then we will have short listing of applicants,” the spokesperson said. “After the 22nd of May, those shortlisted artists will have four weeks to respond to the second stage, and we hope to have the sculptures fabricated and installed by June next year.

“These things do take a bit of time because there is two, so we have to allow for any hiccups that could come along the way, but it is a very exciting project.” The sculptures, are to be situated in the roundabouts on the southern, Slim Dusty, and northern, Dunghutti, Pacific Highway interchanges, and will act as welcoming symbols for northbound and southbound traffic entering and exiting into Frederickton and Kempsey. Expressions of interest are now open to all artists and art based collaborative teams. Artists can apply to undertake one or both gateway projects and must respond to the EOI by Friday April 28, 2017. Shortlisted applicants will be notified after May 22. Interested artists should visit Council’s website for more information: www.kempsey. nsw.gov.au/eoi

A request for money to be sent overseas is then made indicating it will help local police make arrests. Commander of the Fraud and Cybercrime Squad, Superintendent Arthur Katsogiannis stated members of the public should be wary of any contact over the phone, and if you believe you have been a victim of this scam to contact police immediately. “These scammers will continue to come up with innovative ways to scam innocent victims; however, our messages continue to remain – if in doubt, report it to police,” Supt Katsogiannis said. “If you have a feeling you have been scammed, inform police and the Australian Cybercrime Online Reporting Network and Scamwatch. Stay Smart Online has information on recognising scams and hoaxes,” Police urge members of the public to take the following precautions to reduce the risk of being scammed by cold callers: • Never provide your personal or banking details to a person who cold calls you; • Be careful what personal information you provide over the phone, even if you are the person who made the call; • Never provide your financial PIN or account passwords over the phone; • If you have been cold called on a landline, consider making any further calls on a different phone or check that the line is free by calling someone you know first; • If you are suspicious about the credentials of a person on the phone, ask questions – what’s their street address, telephone number, Australian Financial Services Number; • Remember that you can still receive scam calls even if you have a private number or have listed your number on the Australian Government’s Do Not Call Register (link is external). Scammers can obtain your number fraudulently or from anywhere it has been publicly listed such as in a phone book; • Don’t let scammers pressure you – scammers use detailed scripts to convince you that they’re the real deal and create a high pressure situation to make a decision on the spot; • Always keep your computer security up to date with anti-virus and anti-spyware software, and a good firewall. Only buy computer and anti-virus software from a reputable source; • You can report scams to the local police or to the ACCC via the SCAMwatch report a scam page or by calling 1300 795 995.

Hi-tech is child’s play KEMPSEY Shire Library, with the aid of Telstra, hoped to create a new generation of technology experts during the school holidays. The program was designed to help youngsters learn about technology through play. Launched on April 12, the ongoing workshops are part of the $500,000 Telstra Kids Digital Futures Program that aims to boost technology and digital abilities in young people living in regional areas. Inside the Telstra gifted ‘Maker Party in a Box’ are Little Bits digital inventor kits, Sphero robots, Bee Bee Bots floor robots and Makey Makey kits. Michael Marom, Telstra’s Northern NSW Area General Manager, said the workshops were about arming local kids with the skills they needed for the jobs of the future. “Our world is changing,” he said. “Around one million Australian jobs in manufacturing, administration and labouring that existed 25 years ago are no longer part of the workforce.” Mr Marom believes technology and innovation are a central part of Australia’s future and hopes this program will build these abilities in local children. “We want Kempsey children to catch the digital bug,” he said. As part of the fun, the children used computer codes to program a range of robots to move and interact, built electrical circuits to create musical instruments, and wired their own solar-powered plant moisture detectors. “They’ll have learnt essential skills and had a blast while doing it,” Mr Marom added. Kempsey Shire Council’s Library Manager, Angie Meers, said the workshops were for children of all abilities. “And the best part of the program was that it broke down the myth that robotics, computer coding and electronics were hard and

MEMBER for Port Macquarie Leslie Williams is encouraging local councils to apply for NSW Government funding for essential dredging projects under the Rescuing Our Waterways program. Mrs Williams said the State Government recently announced an additional $6 million over four years for the Rescuing Our Waterways program, as part of the NSW Coastal Dredging Strategy. “This funding will help improve the accessibility, health and safety of our regional waterways for recreational and commercial vessels,” Mrs Williams said. “There are a number of projects that councils could apply for including the dredging of the Hastings River to remove sand build up which would assist boats to better navigate the river. “The dredging of Lake Cathie is another option for Port Macquarie-Hastings Council to consider. Applications for the Rescuing Our Waterways program close June 23, 2017.

New program to deliver NBN info A NEW program has been announced that will give consumers greater information on the speeds and experience they can expect from fixed-line broadband services delivered over the National Broadband Network (NBN). The Broadband Performance Monitoring and Reporting (BPMR) program, to be implemented by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC), will source performance data from around 4000 volunteer customers of retail service providers across the country. The program will provide consumers with clear and independent information of the actual speeds being delivered by various retailers. By collecting and publishing information about the speed and reliability of broadband packages, consumers will be better placed to choose a plan that is right for them. It will also encourage retailers to compete on the quality of their broadband plans. Performance information will be made publicly available for the benefit of all Australians. The ACCC will shortly be recruiting householders using the NBN fixed-line network to take part in the program. Further information about how to sign up will be available on the ACCC website shortly. Further to my previous update, the Department of Finance, who administer Members and

THE COWPER REPORT With Luke Hartsuyker
Federal Member for Cowper
NEXT Tuesday is Anzac Day. It is a day to reflect on the extraordinary sacrifices made by ordinary Australians over more than a century of service to our country’s defence forces. Since federation, almost 103,000 Australians have made the ultimate sacrifice while defending the freedoms we all enjoy today. Each year, the Department of Veterans’ Affairs encourages Australians to reflect especially on particular themes or anniversaries from our wartime history. In 2017, we commemorate the centenary of the Sinai-Palestine campaign in World War I. The Sinai campaign was fought against Turkish forces operating from Palestine, for the security of the Suez Canal, which was Britain’s vital link to the East and Australia. Over the two years to February 1917, Allied forces, including a sizable contingent of Anzacs, repulsed wave after wave of Turkish attacks on the Suez Canal, eventually forcing the Turks back into Palestine. The ensuing battles around Gaza included the famous charge of the 4th Light Horse Brigade at Beersheba. I hope you will join me in attending one of the many Anzac Day ceremonies that will be held across the Mid North Coast to remember the sacrifice of the Anzacs. Lest we forget.
Caesar had the ide to ignore warning
WE were in our monthly computer group, where sometimes we discuss anything that is not related to computers, when somebody exclaimed “today is the ides of March”. His next question asked what was the ides of March. Somebody said the ides could refer to any month. Then somebody else said “that can’t be right”. Then he gave his version on the ides of March. The discussion lasted for a big slice of the computer class, but that was normal anyway. The ides can refer to any month. Ides refers to the eighth day after the nones (this column is about ides, not nones). But March is in our heads because it had a more significant reason for being there. This was the date when Julius Caesar was killed. Before 45 BC, many considered the Roman calendar was in a mess. The year started on March 1 and consisted of only 304 days or 10 months -- Martius, Aprilis, Maius, Junius, Quintilis, Sextilis, September, October, November, and December. Then some months were added. Quintilis was renamed July, in honour of Julius Caesar and Sextilis was renamed August Then they added January and February to keep the calendar in line with the seasons. (The Ides of April was a mystery novel by
my
LAURIE BARBER
Lindsey Davis). Some have asked the meaning of “beware”. Caesar, the Roman dictator, appears before the “press” (crowd). A soothsayer in the crowd issues his famous warning “beware the ides of March”. In a book I bought somewhere called Brush Up Your Shakespeare, the ides is the 15th, but not always. The ides of January, for instance, is the 13th, and so on for the other months. Caesar ignored the soothsayer’s warning (a soothsayer is somebody supposedly able to foretell the future) and he went on to meet his doom. Shakespeare borrowed the scene from Plutarch’s Life of Julius Caesar, but Michael Macrone says the scene wasn’t dramatic enough. The scene had the soothsayer saying “take heed of the day of the ides of March”, which apparently was not dramatic enough. I think Shakespeare had a few goes at ides.
Let’s just say the ides is the middle. Ides simply refers to the first full moon of a given month, which usually falls between the 13th and the 15th or so they tell me. Webster says “to divide”. Who am I to question dictionaries? I suppose if you divide equally you will always have the middle. Ides is rarely seen without the s on the end. But in 1483 Richard Arnolde talked about the “ide of August”. Then in 1834 Sir Edward Lytton said it “stands fixed for the ninth ide of August”. The first use of ides that I could find came in 1330. Ides found several uses. It was in the title of a film directed by George Clooney. It appeared in the titles of several books. It was even in the name of government department in the USA. But ides can be the name of a restaurant, the name of people (Saint Ides was an Irish saint), music, even a brand of liquor. It can even be an acronym (Intrusion Detection Expert System). A well-respected and dignified woman in German mythology was called Ides. But that was before my time. lauriebarber.com;lbword@midcoast.com.au

Driving creates choice
ACHIEVING independence relies on passing important milestones and getting your driver’s licence has always been one of the big ones in Australia. As parents, we understand what a huge undertaking it is for young people to amass the hours of learning required to even reach the stage of getting their P’s; the hours and hours in the family car or the huge expense of professional driving lessons. Imagine how hard it would be without access to a car or an adult supervising driver. Port Macquarie Community College is working with the Birpai Land Council to help Aboriginal people realise the dream of holding a drivers licence. The Birpai Learners Program aims to first build the skills to attempt the L’s test, moving on towards earning ‘points’, through regular attendance and successful learning outcomes, towards professional driving lessons; and on towards the goal of attaining their P’s. Attaining a driver’s licence creates broader choices for work and study and helps to keep families in touch over long distances. It opens up new opportunities in life, discovering what’s possible for themselves and alongside others – together. Participants in this program will also be able to work off overdue fines through regular attendance in this program. Please gives us a call to find out more, or come and visit us at SkillsLink Training, 77 Hastings River Drive. Ring 6583 7288 or visit our website on www.skillslinktraining.com.au to check out the full range of opportunities.
Salute our own Anzac Day heroes • From Page 1 “I used to march when I came here from Melbourne in the 80s. I always marched, but very slowly,” Lewis said. “I’m well, slow, yes, but I go to the march. I can’t walk anymore, but I’ve got a friend who has a World War Two Jeep, which is very historic, and I sit in that. “It’s a great day and I welcome anyone to come along … and say g’day.” For many, Anzac Day is a day to celebrate the spirit of the Anzac – the courage, mateship and sacrifices that have formed our sense of national identity. For Lewis and Pam it’s a day to come together with family and friends. And that’s why they seldom have missed a service. “It’s a reunion,” said Pam. “We were very involved in the RAAF association. Lewis joined the RAAF because other members of his family were in the RAAF. “His brother-in-law was a Lancaster pilot that bombed Germany and he used to lead the RAAF march in Melbourne. “Another brother-in-law was killed flying in the war up in New Guinea. And another brother-in-law was in the air force too, and fortunately came back. “I’ve been attending Anzac Day services for about 20 years since I’ve lived with Lewis. He has been attending them since he moved to Port Macquarie in 1980. “We have been going together for the past 20 years all around Australia. We never miss one. Even if we go away, we always attend a service wherever we are.” Lewis enlisted in 1942 when he was just 18
World War Two veteran Lewis Green years of age. “I turned 18 and I was called up,” said Lewis. “World War II was very significant and they needed members so I joined. I studied radar operating and I did a lot of that in Collaroy, Sydney, looking for submarines that kept shooting or sinking freighter ships. “After one month of hard training, to get used to the idea that there was a war, I went up to Richmond air base. And then I was sent to Collaroy.” Lewis spent the latter part of World War II on Peron Island, off the west coast of the Northern Territory. “He was there at the end of the war looking for Japanese planes, or our own planes that might
be limping home,” explained Pam. “With the radar they could send the sea rescue out to get the pilots if they landed in the sea. “When they were on their way up to Peron Island, they travelled in trucks and they had to sleep in pig pens at the showgrounds using their boots as pillows. “Lewis said he never ever had a change of clothes during his whole four years and his shorts were like shreds by the time he got out. He lost his hat too - blown out to sea - and it was never replaced so he has had quite a few skin cancers as a result. There were no luxuries for them anywhere. “He was part of a small group of about 12 radar operators on Peron Island. Their original sleeping quarters was eaten out by termites and fell down and they had to sleep in tents after that. “Lewis also had to walk a couple of kilometres to the radar installation from where they would camp, sometimes at midnight, and there were a lot of crocodiles along the beach shore there where he had to walk.” However, Lewis also has plenty of fond memories from his time on Peron Island. “The aboriginals took a liking to him,” said Pam. “He was the only one they befriended and they would bring him fish and turtle meat. It was quite interesting times for him up there.” Lewis was discharged from the RAAF on February 5, 1946. (Make sure you celebrate your local Anzac Day. Check RSL websites for march times.)
The ‘sorry’ car park saga THE current state of play with the Port Macquarie CBD ‘Plaza Carpark’ and former Food For Less site remains a major bug-bear for many in the community. The site, particularly the old supermarket building is an eyesore and needs to be either revamped or demolished. And soon. In the last term of council, the issue of what to do with the car park site was a very hot topic which captured much feedback and at times some argy-bargy between a number of parties including Crown Lands, council, Woolworths’ representatives, Community, the local State Member and several State Government Ministers. A stand-out moment for me in the ‘turf-war’ that unfolded was when a ‘cunning plan’ was hatched by elements within council to ‘purchase’ the carpark for one dollar. One single dollar. The council poured thousands of dollars of ratepayers money into ‘pretty’ drawings or plans, showing how council would develop the site if they were able to purchase it for that one lonely dollar. Unfortunately for the ratepayers, the details within those one-buck-purchase plans, made
The Rinse Cycle By Adam Roberts - Former Councillor, Port MacquarieHastings Council
for a rather embarrassing submission to the Expression of Interest process and not least saw the plans pulled apart under scrutiny in the council chamber by at least one councillor not impressed with the blatant ‘dummy bid’. The facts remain that the entity (Woolworths) that owns the existing Food For Less site have an approved council DA to update or upgrade the existing building site – and get this, with access to the current carpark area for access to the loading dock. This car park ‘access’ may seem inconsequential to some, but it’s not. Having rights to access the car park and
an approved DA confirming such, is a major headache for council or any other entity that may want to develop the carp park portion of the overall site. It will take a great deal of negotiation to marry a development on the car park site, with the revamp of the existing Food For Less building and taking into consideration the access issues for such. Woolworths dramatically changed their original concept design for the site to provide a better outcome for the visual amenity of the site and council sure as hell had a massive opportunity to work with Woolworths and the State Government to tackle the car parking issue. But, as competing bidders and whatever other ‘interests’ the councillors had for the site, a winwin outcome wasn’t to be. My take-home story of the whole affair is that the council (of which I was a sitting member) missed a massive opportunity to see the site redeveloped in an appropriate way and we are now, as a result of that missed opportunity, left with a legacy of a dilapidated old building that may take many more years to see gone.

Three Wauchope quilters with their handywork, from left, Erica Taig, Lorraine Neill and Jan Pearce
Stitching community together By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC THE Wauchope Patchwork Quilters are about to put their best work forward in their popular biennial quilt show. Over 100 items will be on display at this year’s vibrant event showcasing Wauchope’s best quilt creations, but it’s the social aspect that keeps the group coming back year after year. “People join our group because of the social atmosphere,” said Helen Clunas, Quilt Show Co-ordinator. “People enjoy sewing and creating but we get far more talking done at our weekly meetings than we do sewing.”
The group has been around since 1995 when Robin Gartner, who at the time was a teacher at Wauchope Public School, organised the very first meeting for the group. The first meeting was small - the first recorded minutes showing that the group started with just seven members. “I moved up from Sydney 13 years ago and I had been heavily involved in the Embroiders Guild and there just wasn’t that facility here,” said Helen. “And then I discovered the quilting group and joined them and was made welcome. “At that stage there was 20 or 30 members in the day and night groups, and now we have about 70.” Raising money for charity is also an

Backyard Landcare WEED of the Month April 2017: Winter Senna (Senna pendula variety glabrata) As you drive around Port Macquarie this month, highly visible bright yellow flowers of the Winter Senna bush stand out from gardens and road side corridors against the green. Help Landcare get rid of these bush weeds that form thickets in Port Macquarie’s wildlife corridors. What does it look like? It is a perennial shrub, two to four metres tall. The flowers are bright yellow, each about 3 cm and grow in clusters with straight hairless seed pods that are between ten to twenty cm long. However, it’s the leaves that are most important in identification Identify the weed plant from the threatened native look alike. On each leaf of the weed Senna pendula there are three to six pairs of round to oval leaflets, each leaflet is two to five cm long. Often there is a yellow margin around the edge of the leaflet. This is different from the native plant (Senna acclinis) which has more than six pairs of leaflets, are more oval in shape and do not have a yellow ring around the leaflet. Ecology: Winter Senna flourishes on forest edges and in areas of disturbance. The seed is very long-lived and disturbance events such as flooding, grading, clearing or overstocking will allow it to germinate and grow. It is capable of surviving fire and slashing. If left unmanaged it can form dense thickets. Dispersal: Spreads from mulch, garden waste, soil on machinery and rats may help with dispersal as a result of hording the seeds for food supply. How do I remove it? Hand: Young plants quickly develop a strong root system, but seedlings can generally be hand-pulled. The stems are brittle. Chemical: Cut-stump or chisel/drill-fill any sized plant with undiluted glyphosate (eg RoundUp Biactive). If practical remove mature seed pods. Port Macquarie Landcare Weed Manual is found on our web page at http://www. landcareportmac.com.au/ . If you would like to volunteer to help keep Port Macquarie’s wildlife corridors in good condition, contact us at info@landcareportmac.com.au or by phone 65836508 or 0432141605.
Local Federal Member for Cowper Luke Hartsuyker begins his ‘research’ at Macquarie Seafood in Port Macquarie
Best fish and chips! NATIONALS Member for Cowper Luke Hartsuyker is urging Hastings Valley residents and visitors to vote for their favorite Port Macquarie Fish and Chip shop in the Australian Fish and Chips Awards. The awards were launched by the Fisheries Research and Development Corporation, in partnership with State and Territory Fishing Councils, to promote Australia’s sustainable seafood industry. “I stopped in for a very tasty serve of fish and chips at Macquarie Seafood in Port Macquarie recently – I think owner Bill Cramp has got the crunchy batter to tender fish ratio just right,” Mr Hartsuyker said. “But I’m not prepared to cast my vote just yet – there are plenty more fish and chip shops to test before I commit! “The Mid North Coast produces some of Australia’s finest seafood, so we are blessed to have access to fresh, locally harvested fish. “With the Easter holidays upon us and good weather forecast for the next week, now is a perfect time to enjoy a meal of fish and chips with your family at one of Port Macquarie’s great beaches or parks.
“Once you’ve settled on your favorite local fish and chips, visit www.fishandchipsawards. com.au to cast your vote. The winners will be announced at the National Seafood Industry Awards in September. “I want to see a local Fish and Chip shop win, so I urge everyone to get behind your favorite local seafood merchant so we can bring the trophy to Cowper!”
Did you know?
• The first recorded combination of fish and chips was in 1860 in a London shop owned by Jewish migrant Joseph Malin; • The first Australian fish and chip shop is often credited to Greek migrant Athanasias Comino, who opened his shop in 1879 on Sydney’s Oxford Street; • Australia has an estimated 4,000 fish and chip shops; • Australia’s sustainable management of wild fisheries is world-leading; • Government observers travel regularly on fishing boats to ensure compliance to quotas, bycatch limits and other regulations.

Locals take it to big Show NATIONALS Member for Cowper Luke Hartsuyker has congratulated the participants from Northern NSW for their outstanding efforts representing our region through their displays and entries at the Royal Easter Show in Sydney. “I visited the Show last week on behalf of the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Agriculture, Barnaby Joyce, to launch a new suite of educational resources for schools,” Mr Hartsuyker said. “While I was at the show I was very impressed with the range of displays and competition entries from Northern NSW. “The coastal region of northern NSW produces some of the finest agricultural produce anywhere in the world, including beef, dairy, and horticultural products, with many examples of this produce on display at the show. “The agricultural produce display in the Fresh Food Dome was exceptional.”

Wall pics ease stress By SUE PATERICK TO help people feel at ease when undergoing medical procedures, Kempsey’s Mid North Coast Diagnostic Imagining has created a photographic mosaic of Macleay Valley faces and places. The whole idea for this charming wall of photographs was to help build a healthy community and get involved with the public. Organisers, Mid North Coast Diagnostic Imagining’s Area Manager Shayne Trotter and Veronica Lind from Vermilion Marketing, hoped to create a talking point because most hospitals and medical centres had blank walls. They also realised that many patients attending these medical facilities were often experiencing anxiety, pain and nerves because they didn’t know what to expect. So three months ago locals were asked to send in their favourite photographs and the response was overwhelming. Once the photos were collected and collated they were sent to a graphic designer and were installed last week. According to Ms Lind, community feedback has been great. And given the Macleay Valley’s strong sense of community, quite a few people know someone or somewhere up on the photograph wall. Kempsey’s Mid North Coast Diagnostic Imagining moved into its new premises about six months ago at 35 Belgrave Street and offers CT scans, ultrasounds, general radiology, bone density testing and dental x-rays. Contact them on 1800 620 881. PICTURED: Kempsey’s Mid North Coast Diagnostic Imaging Sonographer, Martin Bennie, standing proudly beside a photograph wall designed to make patients feel at ease

Flu jab vital this winter NSW Health is urging pregnant women, the elderly and other high-risk groups to take advantage of a free flu vaccination – now available from GPs – ahead of the winter flu season. A vaccine protecting against the four likely circulating influenza strains is free for people eligible under the National Immunisation Program. This includes those who are pregnant, over 65 years of age, have severe asthma, diabetes and heart conditions, as well as Aboriginal people aged from six months up to five years and 15 years of age and over. Dr Vicky Sheppeard, Director Communicable Diseases, NSW Health, said it was vital for pregnant women to have the flu jab as they had an increased risk of hospitalisation, intensive care admission, pre-term delivery and possibly death if they caught the flu. “The flu vaccination is very safe for expectant mothers and their babies and also provides protection in the infant’s early months,” Dr Sheppeard said. “Pregnant women and people of all ages with chronic disease in Australia can receive the vaccination for free so I urge all eligible people to take up this opportunity to protect themselves and prevent unnecessary hospitalisation. “Children born to vaccinated mothers have a reduced risk of contracting influenza in the first months of life.” Dr Sheppeard said only about 29 per cent of pregnant women in NSW were vaccinated against the flu last year and only about half of those with diabetes were vaccinated despite being eligible for the free vaccine. “We encourage all people to get the flu vaccine but particularly the more vulnerable groups who not only have a higher chance of getting the flu but are more severely impacted by it,” Dr Sheppeard said.

Enterta nment WEEKLY
arts, music and more...
Winning design GIG GUIDE ANGELA Roberts, an Aboriginal Arts student, has had her design selected to help promote TAFE NSW’s Aboriginal Pathways initiative. Ms Roberts, a student at TAFE NSW’s Wauchope Campus, is currently studying Certificate III in Art and Design and has had her art displayed in a range of public exhibitions. Creative Industries teacher at Wauchope Campus, Jacky Beckhurst, said four student designs were submitted but Ms Roberts’ design, entitled ‘Circle of life, hands of time’, fitted the brief best. “Angela’s design was broad and inclusive and anyone could relate (to it) with its themes of generations and inclusivity,” said Ms Beckhurst. Ms Roberts, who plays an important role on campus as a community Elder, finds her educational experience enriching. “My favourite things about studying at TAFE, apart from the learning, is the classroom atmosphere, and the way that we all encourage each other. It is a real mix of people – everyone is so different,” she said. Ms Roberts is in a group of Aboriginal artists exhibiting at the ‘Our Culture, Our Connections, Our Stories’ June exhibition at the Glasshouse Port Macquarie Regional Gallery as part of an ongoing partnership between TAFE NSW and the Glasshouse. For more information about courses on Aboriginal Art and Culture or Design at TAFE NSW, visit the TAFE NSW website or call 1300 628 233.

Club’s half-century THE Port City Leagues Magpies Cricket Club held a duel celebration recently at the Port City Bowling Club combining their end-of-season presentation night with their 50th anniversary. Leagues life member Bill Grant explained on the night that the club was originally formed in 1967 to keep the local rugby league players together and to work on their fitness over the summer. Bill was also the driving force behind replacing the concrete pitch at Oxley Oval and turning into a turf wicket in the late 1970s. Club president Paul Byrne was proud to boast that Port City has played in more First Grade grand finals and won more premierships over the past five decades than any other club and has a 50 per cent success rate. Since the merger of Leagues with the Port Magpies in 2012, the club has won a premiership in all four grades, taken out the three individual T20 titles as well as the Hastings ‘Club of the Year Award’ in 2014. In addition to the respective awards handed out to the outstanding players from each grade this season, an overall Port City First Grade ‘Player of the last 50 Years’ was named with Craig McElroy the deserving recipient. Teenager Charles Adnum beat allcomers to win the club’s overall 2016/17 Player of the Year Award and the number of life members grew to 18 with the addition of Mick Hourigan and Nik James. Other major awards: Young Magpie of the Year: Hannah Faux; Rookie of the Year: Zac Jones; Jack Walkley Award (Clubperson of the Year): Gareth Cairns; Bill Neasby Medal (club champion): Charles Adnum. Pictured: Life member Bill Grant, right, presenting the Player of the Last 50 years Award to Craig McElroy
PORT Macquarie Sailing Club held their informal Easter Cup on the river on Sunday. Due to many members being away and having family commitments over Easter, the Easter Cup race is a stand-alone race and does not contribute to any of the point scores. It was sailed in a very easy north-easter which backed a little to the north as the race progressed. The run out tide also increased in strength during the race. The catamaran division had four contenders. Frank O’Rourke on Dino was first home ahead of Tony Kuhn on Stella. The real battle in this division was between veteran Dave Winter on Spica and club commodore Kelly Miller sailing on her partner Scott Witchard’s arrow cat Hummer for the first time. After a race-long battle, Hummer finally finished 52 seconds ahead of Spica. Kelly now needs to learn how to use the trapeze to race the arrow cat in more breeze. There were only two boats contesting the monohull division. Simon Gandy and Michael Jones in Voyager saw novice skipper Michael at the helm for the first half of the race, resulting in a close tussle with Steve Bohlsen on Splash Dance. Simon took the helm of Voyager for the second half of the race and slowly pulled ahead. That, combined with Splash Dance having a capsize on the reach between the B & C buoys on the second lap, saw Voyager ending up nearly six minutes ahead of Splash Dance. Next weekend is race 12 of the summer series starting at 1pm. Simon Gandy is rostered on duty. Innes, T. Millward & R. Brittain. Lucky losers were I. Kelly, T. Barry & D. Hyslop, with the bowlers jackpot not being won by J. Burns team.

Mental toughness is the key
OK, finally we found some tipping form. For those who follow Your Local Independent’s tips each week, you would have had reason to smile with a tidy seven from eight last round – just the Panthers letting us down. And the Panthers are one of the big shock disappointments for 2017. For several years they have had a rebuilding plan in place and this was the year they were to be a genuine premiership threat. Now that may still be the case, depending if you take the glass half full/half empty approach. Yes, they still have 19 rounds to go, however they are in 13th place and are giving teams a big head start. Sometimes it is almost impossible to put your finger exactly on why a team is not performing to its top potential. Off-field dramas, injuries, lack of form, or the lack of key players in key positions are the usual culprits. The biggest reason why teams fail to fire is mental. Skill-wise there is not a big gap between one and 16 in the NRL. The ability of the coach, or the culture of the club, that ensures a team is
close to 100 per cent mentally ready to play is the main reason teams win. That mental toughness must remain for 80 minutes. You see it every weekend. Last weekend the Tigers had a commanding lead over the Eels well into the second half. However there was a momentum shift and mentally the Tigers fell off and the Eels gained more and more belief. Both sets of players would have had tired legs by the 70th minute, but the team with the tougher mental approach will endure nine times out of 10. That’s why Titans fans should still take heart. Here is a team that should be spanked by 50 every game. Take as many as 12 players out of any first grade squad and see how you go. Any team would struggle. The Titans are 1-6, but are still competing hard with a massive injury burden. YLI’s tip is, watch this club fly home in the second half of the season when their troops return. OK, let’s tip some winners. No Thursday game, but the round goes through to Tuesday, Anzac Day. Raiders v Sea Eagles (Friday, April 21,

Cowboys v Knights (Saturday, April 22, 5.30pm, 1300SMILES Stadium, Townsville): Gee you would love to throw one the Knights’ way. They are getting closer and the Cows have been hot and cold even when JT was on board. Having said that … • Your Local Independent tips: Cowboys Sharks v Titans (Saturday, April 22, 7.30pm, Southern Cross Stadium, Cronulla): There is a chance that both Hurrell and Proctor may be back this weekend for the Titans. And even a whisper that Hayne is very close. The Sharks have put to bed any doubts over the ‘premiership hangover’. They are, and should be, strong favourites here. The Titans can cause an upset, but Sharks deserve respect. • Your Local Independent tips: Sharks Tigers v Bulldogs (Sunday, April 23, 4pm, ANZ Stadium, Sydney): The Tigers’ deflation last weekend cost them plenty of support from the tipsters. Klemmer and Hopoate expected back for the Dogs, while Idris may be lost to the Tigers through injury and who knows where Mitchell Moses will be. The early money is with the Dogs and that is probably correct. • Your Local Independent tips: Dogs Roosters v Dragons (Tuesday, April 25, 4pm, Allianz Stadium, 21st – 25th April 2017 Sydney): The first of the Anzac Day Friday 21st April, 6pm, GIO Stadium showdowns, and a cracker! Pressure Raiders vs Sea Eagles now on the Dragons to maintain the Friday 21st April, 7.50pm, ANZ Stadium rage. The fourth-placed Roosters will Rabbitohs vs Broncos be tough, but given that Dugan is a Saturday 22nd April, 3pm, ANZ Stadium likely starter for St George they will Eels vs Panthers start favourites. Saturday 22nd April, 5.30pm, 1300 Smiles Stadium • Your Local Independent tips: Cowboys vs Knights Dragons Saturday 22nd April, 7.30pm, Southern Cross Group Stadium Storm v Warriors (Tuesday, April Sharks vs Titans 25, 7pm, AAMI Park, Melbourne): Sunday 23rd April, 4pm, ANZ Stadium Consistent v inconsistent. Real v Wests Tigers vs Bulldogs potential. Slater looks better with every Tuesday 25th April, 4pm, Allianz Stadium game and the Storm’s old firm of Slater/ Roosters vs Dragons Cronk/Smith are back in sync. Tuesday 25th April, 7pm, AAMI Park • Your Local Independent tips: Storm vs Warriors Storm
6pm, GIO Stadium, Canberra): After an early glitch the Raiders are back where people expected, in the top eight. They had a solid win over the Warriors last weekend and are again at home. Manly are better, but still not quite there. No major team changes likely. • Your Local Independent tips: Raiders Rabbitohs v Broncos (Friday, April 21, 7.50pm, ANZ Stadium, Sydney): This is a big one for both teams, especially the Rabbitohs. Sam Burgess is under a judiciary cloud (as this is written) but the Bunnies have a real chance. The Broncos escaped past a reserve grade Titans unit last weekend and are vulnerable. The Rabbitohs are so inconsistent, but near their best can get the points. Let’s go for the upset. • Your Local Independent tips: Rabbitohs Eels v Panthers (Saturday, April 22, 3pm, ANZ Stadium): Toss a coin. Both teams have been below their best, but the Eels shook off a losing streak by storming home over the Tigers last weekend. Bryce Cartwright should be back for the Panthers, but momentum with the Eels. • Your Local Independent tips: Eels.
