‘We’re re-tyred!’ By SUE PATERICK
AFTER 40 years in business, Kerry and Bruce Manning from South Kempsey Tyre Centre are retiring to take time to smell the flowers and throw in a line. “We just want some time out for ourselves,” Kerry said, and chuckled. “We want to garden and go fishing, lots of fishing because I love my fishing.” Both born and bred in the Macleay Valley, Kerry and Bruce have no desire to leave the area. They love its friendly people and relaxed atmosphere, not to mention its beaches. “We have the best coastline anywhere,” Kerry said. Bruce worked with his Dad, Jim Manning, in his mechanical business for 20 years. While they weren’t into selling tyres, they sold a few and were constantly referring their customers to other tyre businesses in town. “So Bruce and I decided to start our own,” Kerry said. Her advice to anyone wanting to go into business is to be loyal and honest to your customers. As Kerry and Bruce get ready to start a new and exciting chapter in their lives, they can’t thank their faithful customers enough for sticking with them. “We’re going to miss them as much as they’ll miss us and we really appreciate their business over the past 40 years,” Kerry said. • Continued Page 9
Peter Leicht, left, wishing Kerry and Bruce Manning from the South Kempsey Tyre Centre a great retirement from Friday July 21. Peter takes over the business on Saturday July 22 but will open on Monday July 24.

Aged Care Information in the Macleay and Hastings Home Instead Senior Care Port Macquarie - Mid North Coast Has been open to the Mid North Coast NSW communities now since October 2015. Since opening their first office in Port Macquarie, owners Rod Lewis and Scott Marsh have become more and more aware of the lack of easily accessed information for Seniors, their families and loved ones about the options and choices available throughout the region. With this in mind, they have created opportunities to share information about choices and educate the community on the options that older Australians in our region have for help and assistance to retain their independence and exercise their right to stay in their own homes for as long as possible. Rod Lewis says “ the Australian Government has through the development of the My Aged Care contact centre and website, made information about help and options more accessible to all Australians on the matters of ageing. Whilst we live in an ever evolving communication and digital age, not everyone in our societies has access to, or the ability to utilise these opportunities to access the information available through this agency”. With this in mind, Rod Lewis and Scott Marsh of Home Instead Mid North Coast have dediced to take the sharing of information on Ageing to the next level of accessibility for communities and have opened an Ageing Information Centre located in Central Kempsey. “The reason we chose the CBD of Kempsey is that it is about half way between the two outside points that we and our team provide service to our clients. From Forster through to Coffs Harbour with the upgrade and re-building of the Pacific highway to Pacific Motorway, Kempsey is becoming a “Traditionally a private ‘fee for service’ , Home Instead’s high quality support for central hub for businesses and services throught the region” said Scott. Often Seniors, we are now able to offer our services to any Seniors in our communities when people think about the Mid North Coast, it’s only the major towns, and that are in need of help”said Scott. Rod Lewis explains, “Whilst there are a number of steps involved in very easily people forget that there are many smalll commmunities in between and to the side of these where there are older Australians that have either lived accessing Government subsidised services, our new information centre is about making an accessible ‘Drop In Point’ where people can sit and chat face to face their whole lives or at some point moved there to enjoy their retirement years. People find that getting information and help in these regional areas is not so about their options for support, including the steps involved in accessing a Home Care Package from assessment, the National Queue and the allocation of easy as it is for those in the major capitals of Australia. Home Instead Senior Care on the Mid North Coast has this year a package or even changing their current provider if they wish. It’s only the beginning Greens’ mayoral candidate has life-long goals
No matter what the result on the 29th, I will end the day feeling content that I “stood up for what I believe and what I think is good for the community
“
By BARBARA DYER LAUREN Edwards is the youngest candidate in the mayoral race, but she is no stranger to the competition, having run on the Greens ticket in last year’s local council election. Lauren is both passionate about the role she is prepared to take on, as well as realistic about her chances of being voted into the top job on July 29. “I do not expect to win this election, but I do believe I will get at least the same proportion of the Green vote as last time. Our vote is on the rise and I expect a reasonable showing,” the local businesswoman says. “The Port Macquarie-Hastings region historically doesn’t give the Greens a big part of the vote, so being voted in Mayor may seem highly ambitious. While at 37 I am youngest candidate, I bring maturity beyond my years and am completely focused on justice and positive working relationships.” For Lauren, this is only the beginning. Having thrown her hat into the ring last year, she thought ‘why not run for mayor’ this year. “I am already working at different levels of community; council is another level,” she says. Lauren is convener of the Three Rivers Greens and is well known as an environmental protection and safe climate campaigner. “It is crucial to the Port Macquarie Hastings Region that sustainable development and protecting biodiversity be put high on the agenda,” she says. “It is also of utmost importance that we secure the remaining koala habitat in our region. I am on a mission to ensure our koalas are protected.” Lauren said she wanted to see the Local Government Area included in the proposed Great Koala National Park. “We are privileged in Port Macquarie, to be living in a clean environment, with no mining or wholesale destruction of the environment,” she said. “We have a comfortable existence so many people may not have environmental issues on their radar. “But I do believe in thinking globally and acting locally and it’s important to show leadership.” As for the issues that are uppermost in the
Lauren Edwards says she will be focused on justice and positive working relationships if elected as Port Macquarie-Hastings Council Mayor minds of local residents, Lauren said there was a need to focus on infrastructure projects and finding solutions to the growing traffic congestion impacting the community. “Roads, rates and rubbish, will always be priorities for local residents,” she says. “But there are many exciting opportunities in emerging sustainable economies for our region. What it will take is sensible government, good decision making and plans for long-term investment. “I’d like to be part of a council that aims to hit 100 per cent renewable energy targets. “No matter what the result on the 29th, I will end the day feeling content that I stood up for what I believe and what I think is good for the community.
“I will be satisfied that I got involved because that is important. “It might be just another step on my path to representing the Port Macquarie-Hastings region at local government level, but it will be an important step to showing my commitment to the area. “As a Greens member I proudly bring the focus on grassroots participatory democracy, social justice, non-violence and ecological sustainability. “I am committed to consulting with the community and working co-operatively with the other councillors and council staff to continue improving the lives of everyone in our region. “I am passionate about social and environmental justice and want to ensure that, in
Port Macquarie, we are building a productive and vibrant community based on these principles, and building a sustainable community that provides quality educational and employment opportunities for our young people.” Lauren, single parent of a teenage daughter, has lived, worked, studied and volunteered in the Port Macquarie community over the past 18 years. She is a remedial massage therapist with a Business Management qualification and a Bachelor degree. She also enjoys performing with other musicians and supporting the local arts community.

Vote ... and then let Karma do its thing From The Press Council completely From “ theHeart... Heart... the vindicated Your Local Independent. Sandy Mackenzie Sandy Mackenzie
“
KARMA truly is a beautiful thing. I love it! It’s just the reaping and sowing principle. What you give out, you get back ten-fold. What goes around, comes around. Whichever way you look at it, it is a beautiful thing. Iif you understand it. The beautiful thing about Karma is, if you have truly been wronged by someone, be it, slight untruths, blatant lies or all the murky stuff in between, you can just let go and let Karma do its thing. I have a Karma file. Before you throw your arms up in the air calling me all the vindictive bitches under the sun – it’s not entirely what you think. A Karma file is not about keeping a grudge and exacting revenge. In fact, it is completely the opposite. I keep my file on all the major injustices that come my way. Most of the stuff is abusive emails or Facebook stalking. The most vicious from people who hold high positions in our community. A lot of veiled threats intended to damage my business, bully me into some sort of submission or just outright
YOUR paper was doing its job. Speaking up for the LOCAL community. character assassination! At times it is tempting to be reactionary - name and shame, publish each one of them, send shockwaves through the community and be done with it. Thus far, I’ve chosen not to. For the most part it is much more satisfying to watch Karma do its own beautiful thing. EG: I print out the offending document (often draft a venomous response I don’t send), file it and wait. Because all good things come to those who wait! It might be to wait for the offender to come unstuck of their own accord. You know, give them enough rope and they’ll hang themselves. There’s been a bit of that going on recently. Or it could be to wait for the perfect timing to revisit an individual file from the Karma Collection. Currently, I have several files in the Karma Collection that are begging to be revisited due to the upcoming PMHC Mayoral by-election on Saturday, July 29. I figured, since there is a lot riding on this by-
election result for the community then maybe, the time has come. Why would I do that? Because, quite frankly, I’m over the crap! The last 12 months has seen my flimsy little Karma Collection of 3-4 sheets of paper grow to a manila folder, bursting at the seams with over 75 pages of reasons to spill the beans, which would hurt a lot of people. Rest easy people, I‘ve chosen to take the moral high ground, again, on this one, not stoop to the same dirty tactics employed by the powers that be, (or think they are the powers that be) and continue to let Karma do its own thing. I will say a couple of things though. If you want change for our community, then use your vote wisely. If you vote for Turner, Intemann, Griffiths or Edwards – you’ll continue to get more of what you’re getting now - a Council run by a bloc, who say one thing and do another, cannot project manage their way around a paper bag, let alone out of it and should hold a record
for under-delivery of works. On top of that you will also get to pay for another by-election in 12 weeks to fill the vacant position. My advice - only put a 1 in the box of the person you want as Mayor – do not preference! Chances are, if either Intemann or Turner make the cut, the push to shut Your Local Independent down will escalate, again, at an amazing rate of knots! Yes, you read that correctly. PMHC has over the past 12 months tried to have Your Local Independent fined at least, shut down at most, over the last election by complaining to the Australian Press Council. I had to respond to many claims – I sent 53 pages of abusive correspondence (the Karma file) to the Australian Press Council – the case was finally closed in February. The Press Council completely vindicated Your Local Independent. YOUR paper was doing its job. Speaking up for the LOCAL community. Anyone else would sue PMHC for the unconscionable conduct and damages to their mental health and wellbeing – nearly 6 months of my life, being scrutinised for daring to tell the community the truth! People, the ball is in your court – think long and hard. You have two options. If you’re happy to settle, stick with what you’ve got and get ready to go back to the polls. If you really want change – make your vote count and vote for change. I’ll be voting for change and the good Karma that will come with it!

Thumbs Down WHILE we all know that roads have to be maintained, it seems that a little more thought could have been put into the situation at the Gordon/Horton intersection. The simple placement of a large ‘Left Turn Only’ in the western approach left lane would have prevented the formation of the present bottleneck. I don’t think I’d be the only one who thinks that our local Traffic Control company is happiest when they can cause the most disruption to traffic flow.

TO the Miedeke Motors Service Department for going above and beyond normal expectations when the communications system in my Hyundai turned its toes up. The favour that was done for me will be appreciated forever.
Thumbs Down TO the impatient person in the white Mercedes van who overtook me on the Cathie straight heading south recently. Over the unbroken lines right on the blind crest of the hill approximately 100 metres from the last big head-on. That was the scariest thing I’ve witnessed in 43 years of driving and you could have taken out several cars, death’s a certainty. Only luck saved many people and I hope you were fined!

TO myself for driving like an idiot on Ocean Drive the other night and trying to overtake a driver before the two lanes merged into one. Stupid and no excuse for this dangerous act. I would like to apologise to the other driver.
Thumbs Down TO the serial protesters who caused an event at Port Macquarie Community Garden, ‘The Lost Plot’, to be cancelled. The community garden event was to acknowledge the receipt of a Community Volunteer Grant of $5000, recently received via a Federal Government initiative. The protesters, armed with their placards gathered outside our community garden awaiting the arrival of our Federal MP. What was to be a useful community meeting with the Assistant Minister to the Minister for Agriculture and Water, was immediately cancelled due to the radical behaviour of a few. Shame on you lot.

Familiar face for tough times By BARBARA DYER
RESIDENTS of Port Macquarie who need to stay in Sydney for medical treatment, will find a welcoming home away from home and, possibly, a couple of familiar faces, at the recently renovated low-cost Chisholm Cottage accommodation near busy Westmead Hospital. After 18 years living in Port Macquarie, Sonia Fingleton has returned to Sydney with husband Grey to take up the live-in Accommodation Manager’s role at the budget accommodation which caters to families needing to be near the medical facility. “Our time in Port Macquarie was wonderful,” says Sonia. “It’s where we raised our kids, immersed ourselves in community life and where I had a marketing role with the North Coast Destination Network.” It was there she gained accommodation experience so, when the couple decided it was time to move to Sydney to be closer to their children and grandkids, the job at Chisholm Cottage presented a perfect opportunity. “I wanted to continue serving the community and working with people and my role at Chisholm Cottage lets me do that,” says Sonia. “We are here with a friendly greeting, a warm welcome, advice, a shoulder to cry on, practical help and whatever anyone needs when they are away from home, family and their networks to care for someone ill in hospital. “Because that is what Chisholm Cottage is for. We are a home away from home for regional families who often find the city an overwhelming place at a time when they really need support and compassion.” It can be very expensive too and the house is one of only a few affordable accommodation offerings near the Westmead Hospital campus in western Sydney. Chisholm Cottage was

(Photos: Temple&Webster) founded in 1996 by the Catholic Women’s League and has been operated by Sisters of Charity Outreach since 2011. But it was starting to show its age and was temporarily closed last October to allow for a major upgrade which included roof replacement, renovation and refurbishment. To get an idea of demand, between July 2014 and September 2016, just prior to closing for the upgrade, Chisholm Cottage hosted 742 adults and 352 children on 1885 booking nights, saving an estimated $72,000 a year in accommodation
costs in Sydney. Guests came from regional towns including Dubbo, Coonamble, Maitland, Yamba, Innisfail, Wollongong, Armidale, Yass, Wagga Wagga and Cowra. “In the five weeks I have been here, we have had guests from Coffs, Taree and Macleay,” said Sonia. “The refurbished accommodation now has four secure bedrooms configured as a double room, a twin room with two single beds and two family rooms for three people.
“And when people are under stress worrying about family in hospital, there is great comfort coming home to the communal kitchen, TV lounge and a home room where they might find fresh flowers to welcome them and where they can be alone or can enjoy the company of other guests and staff if they wish.” Sonia can also direct residents to local services and can advise on a Country Care Link service which, with 48 hours notice, can arrange pick-up or drop off to airports and trains and offer free travel between medical appointments. “There is no judgement or assessment about who can access Chisholm Cottage,” says Sonia. “It’s for parents who need to be near their littlies; spouses, and anyone who may find themselves alone in Sydney for medical treatment whether major surgery or follow-up care.” Bookings are heavy with prices of $60 and $80 a night.

The Time is NOW for Change As a Mayoral candidate, I offer the Port Macquarie Hastings community significant leadership change within the organisation, particularly in relation to the culture and the vision for delivery of future projects and services. ‘Business as usual’ is no longer acceptable and will be replaced with a commitment to strive to do business better. The time is now for a fresh leadership approach in order to move our Council in a new direction and operate in a new and different way. My leadership style is much different from the current (and previous) and I truly believe that with the Community behind me, Council will be forced to change direction and will give greater consideration to the ratepayer dollar and the needs of our community. Without transparency and accountability there is no measure of standard. Residents and ratepayers can expect better outcomes when Council is held to account. If elected, my vote will always be in the best interests of the majority and I will not turn my back on the big issues for our community. In order to achieve this though there must be a change in culture in the organisation from the top down with. A huge task I know, however I believe I have the ability to make this happen. True leadership is encouraging others to see the vision and take ownership of it and this will be my starting point should I be elected on July 29. This election vote for change, vote 1 Pinson4Mayor. I welcome your comments about what is important to you and can be emailed at pinson4mayor@gmail.com or contact my office on 6585 2519. Sleep-out will bring comfort to homeless By BARBARA DYER
WHEN it comes to helping the disadvantaged Port Macquarie real estate agent Sue Jogever is really thinking outside the box. Or, more accurately, thinking of sleeping outside in a cardboard box to raise funds for the region’s first Orange Sky Laundry van. Sue is hoping plenty will join her next week for the sleepout at the Port Macquarie Breakwall Holiday Park, or will support the Orange Sky Laundry van effort through a GoFundMe page. The mobile service enables people who are sleeping rough to have their clothes and bedding washed and dried for free. It has also assisted people in desperate need during times of natural disaster. “Coast Front Realty is helping the Make A Difference organisation to raise funds and establish Port Macquarie’s own Orange Sky Laundry van to service our local community,” says Sue. Sue’s goal is to raise $5000 from the sleepout and, through a GoFundMe page, she is a quarter of the way towards that goal. It’s estimated that 600 people in an area from Port Macquarie up to Kempsey and down to Taree will use the laundry vans, which cost $100,000 to set up and keep operational. A jazz day at Bago Vineyards recently, added $10,000, pushing funds over the halfway mark. A charity dinner will also be held Friday (July 21) at Bills Fishhouse, with Orange Sky Laundry co-founder Nic Marchesi and Lifeline Crisis Support Manager and Head of Training Di Bannister as guest speakers. Tickets are available from the restaurant. “We hope the sleepout at the Port Macquarie Breakwall Holiday Park will further help boost those funds,” says Sue. The idea of a sleepout in the middle of winter might well send a collective shiver down most people’s backs, but Sue says there are other ways to support the event. “It’s no fun at all for people who really have no warm bed, let alone a washing machine to

Orange Sky Laundry founder in town ORANGE Sky Laundry co-founder Nicholas Marchesi, who started the enterprise with mate Lucas Patchett, is currently in Port Macquarie sharing their story at the three-day Luminosity Youth Summit which began on Wednesday (July 19). Orange Sky is the world’s first free mobile laundry service for the homeless which started as a ‘crazy idea’ by the mates to put two washing machines and two dryers in a van and wash and dry clothes for free. Starting in the streets of Brisbane in 2014, Orange Sky has expanded across Australia handling almost six tonnes of laundry every week and, most importantly, according to the founders, ‘offering 1100 hours positive do their laundry, but we think the sleepout on July 28 will be fun for those who are up for the challenge,” she says. “For those who cannot physically be at the sleepout, all donations will be appreciated by the Make A Difference organisation as it strives to bring an Orange Sky mobile laundry to Port Macquarie.
and genuine conversations every week’. It is estimated to cost $6 to wash and dry someone’s clothes, a service offered free to those in need and recently welcomed by communities affected by Cyclone Debbie. Nic will talk about The Power of Conversation at the Glasshouse main theatre on Friday (July 21), with ‘conversation’ being integral to the success of the Orange Sky Laundry network. He will also be guest speaker at a charity dinner at Bills Fishhouse Friday night and is also encouraging Port Macquarie youth to get behind the push for an Orange Sky Laundry Van for Port Macquarie by registering or donating to the M.A.D.Coast Front Realty Sleepout. “At Coast Front Realty we help buy and sell people’s dream homes. This time, it is our dream to help the homeless.” While the vans began as a means to return clean clothes and dignity to people sleeping rough, or even couch-surfing youth, they have also been called into service during recent times for those impacted by floods.

“But it’s not only about people in need having their clothes washed and dried for free,” says Sue. “The social aspect is important too.” The Orange Sky laundries have become places where people can connect who might otherwise have no positive contact. Those planning to sleep under the stars are encouraged to bring sleeping bags and as much warm bedding as they need. “A $25 registration fee will include the cardboard teepees, a bowl of soup and a sausage sandwich,” says Sue. “I truly believe we can all make a difference and I’d love to see 100 people register for the sleepout next week at the Breakwall Holiday Park. “If you can’t be there in person for the M.A.D Coast Front Realty sleepout, we would love to feel your warmth and support by donating to our cause online.” The sleepout will be held on Friday, July 28, at the Port Macquarie Breakwall Holiday Park (formerly Sundowner Caravan Park) from 5pm. It is a family-friendly event but under 18s must be accompanied by an adult. For ticket information check out the Coast Front Realty Facebook page and follow the link to the GoFundMe page.

Million dollar hero By SUE PATERICK
NOT many people would give up everything to help raise funds and awareness of debilitating skin condition Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB), despite having no personal connection with this so far incurable disease. Yet after nearly 18 months of trying to secure a financial sponsor, Andrew Biszczak and his family made the life-changing decision to sell everything they owned to self-fund The Million Dollar Run campaign. Part of Andrew’s campaign was to run 3000 kilometres from Adelaide to Brisbane with the goal of raising a minimum of $1 million to help find a cure for EB. Andrew and Sonia owned a real estate business in Adelaide and one day a young woman called Kate came in with her family. Kate was born with EB and it was the first time Andrew had ever heard of the disease. “When you see it for the first time it is very confronting,” he said. This rare and shocking skin condition causes the skin to blister and peel and affects about 1000 sufferers in Australia.
Tiffany, Sonia and Andrew Biszczak sold everything they owned to help find a cure for debilitating skin condition Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB) According to DEBRA Australia - a non-profit, volunteer-based organisation set up to support EB sufferers, living with the disease is like living with third-degree burns. Apart from being extremely painful, sufferers must be bathed every day for hours in bleach and salt and then bandaged with dressings to protect and medicate their wounds. Andrew says children with EB are often called ‘Butterfly Children’ because their skin is
as delicate as butterfly wings. “They live their entire lives in constant, unimaginable pain because their skin blisters at the slightest touch,” he said. “There is no cure as yet and no direct government funding either.” As soon as he met Kate, Andrew knew he had to do something to help. Andrew said he wouldn’t have been able to do The Million Dollar Run without his wife Sonia
and nine-year-old daughter Tiffany’s support. Not only did they radically change their lives, Sonia and Tiffany are literally behind Andrew every step of the way and are following him in a support vehicle for the entire journey to Brisbane. Sonia said it wasn’t an easy decision to sell their home located at Victor Harbour in South Australia, their business and all their assets, but she knew it was important to support her altruistic husband. “It was sad to say goodbye to not only our home but most of our possessions and the friends we have made in the area,” she said. Sonia thinks they have travelled about 2100 kilometres so far and have about 900 to go. This Thursday, July 20, will see Andrew and his team reach Port Macquarie. Andrew says he is looking forward to a rest day at the pretty seaside town and reckons his body and feet are holding up pretty well. Never an athlete, Andrew had to lose 30 kilos to start his mammoth 3000-kilometre run and likens it to running five marathons a week for four months. Of course some days are better than others, but his motivation always comes back to the Butterfly Children living with EB. “When things seem to be getting rough I just think about Johnny, one of my ambassadors, whose greatest wish is to just dive into a swimming pool and not rip off his skin.” From Port Macquarie the hard-working team will head up to Kempsey on Saturday July 22. When Andrew and his family reach Brisbane at the end of his campaign they will have exhausted all their funds. He has no idea what will happen then but is putting his faith in the fact that everything will work out for the best. So far Andrew’s selfless campaign has raised over $100,000, but $1 million is still the goal. “Any charity would be happy to raise $100,000, but the cost to make a difference and find a cure for EB starts at a million,” he said. Grants allow for upgrades for patients CANBERRA CONNECTIONS With Dr David Gillespie Federal MP for Lyne
PATIENTS in Wauchope, Lake Cathie, Forster and Bluey’s Beach will soon be able reap the benefits of improved health facilities after four medical centres were awarded Federal Government grants to enable significant upgrades. Last Wednesday I announced Lake Cathie Medical Centre, Hastings Medical Centre, Foster Tuncurry Medical Centre and Pacific Palms Medical Centre will receive funding of up to $300,000 as part of the Coalition’s $13.1m Rural General Practice Grants Program. It marks the latest effort by the Coalition to train and retain our doctors, nurses and allied health professionals in regional areas. The funding will allow practices to expand and significantly enhance their operating capacity and ability to provide hands-on training. This will include building additional consultation rooms and renovating existing ones, as well as purchasing new medical equipment and upgrading technology. The funding boost will ease the burden on hospitals across the region by placing General Practices in a better position to treat preventable illness. I also made another important announcement last week, which will have an extremely profound impact on an issue severely affecting the Mid North Coast – suicide prevention. Wesley Mission will receive more than $110,000 from the Coalition Government through the North Coast Primary Health Network to deliver Wesley LifeForce. The training program is designed to enable community members to act as gatekeepers and recognise a crisis and any warning signs of suicide and respond accordingly. It’s anticipated that more than 280 people will participate which significantly increases our chances of stopping preventable deaths. Finally, coming soon is the opening of the latest round of the Coalition Government’s Stronger Communities Programme. If you’ve got a capital project which will benefit your Mid North Coast community then I want to hear from you because you could be eligible for a grant. Please visit www.business.gov.au/ assistance/stronger-communities-programme for more information. Applications will open on August 7, 2017.
Organ donation is the gift of life ON August 5, alongside 50 keen motorcyclists, I will be riding from Coffs Harbour to Port Macquarie to raise awareness of a tremendously important cause – organ donor registration. Should the worst occur and you pass away, your family will need to make the decision whether or not your organs give the gift of life to up to 10 different people. You can ensure up to 10 people receive life changing or lifesaving gift. What a fantastic legacy! We’re very lucky to live in a country like Australia, where not only is organ donation possible for thousands of people each year, but we are a world leader in successful transplant outcomes. Since launching this motorcycle ride in Canberra and Coffs Harbour, a number of people have contacted my office to tell me of their organ donation experiences. Hearing all the incredible stories of sacrifice and generosity has blown me away. Port Macquarie mother of three Khyleah Magnus had to spend up to 20 hours a week on dialysis before she had her kidney transplant. She attributes her new kidney to giving her a life back. She now spends much more time with her family and they’re all so appreciative to have

their mum around. Last week, I met with Mick and Una Carpenter. Their son, Jason, passed away at the age of 38 and they made the decision to donate his organs. They chose to take this tragic situation and create a positive legacy with Jason’s organs giving people they don’t even know an improved quality of life. Thousands of people are currently on waiting lists for organs across Australia and the more of us that sign up, the more likely these people will be to receive the gift of life. These people on the waiting lists now are the reason why I’m riding to raise awareness and the reason why it’s so important to register to become an organ donor today – http://register. donatelife.gov.au

Motion comes before a resolution my WHEN I was a young journalist, admittedly a long time ago, one of the first things impressed on me was the difference between a motion and a resolution. Maybe the person who told me this was wrong. Whenever I go to public meetings these days I hear about a resolution to be put to the meeting. The other day a chairman of a meeting even issued a correction saying a motion should have been a resolution. That was before people had a vote on it. The way it was put to me, a meeting receives a motion and if the motion is passed the meeting resolves to do something. In other words, the motion has to be passed before it becomes a resolution. If it is defeated, it doesn’t become anything. Of course, I could be wrong. My 20-volume Oxford says, among many definitions, that a resolution is the “removal of doubt”; the Macquarie says a resolution is “a formal determination”; Collins says a resolution is “a firm determination to do something”; and my American Webster says a resolution is “a firm decision”. Samuel Johnson in what I regard as the first real dictionary said in 1755 that the word
LAURIE BARBER
resolution meant “free from doubt” but the First Dictionary, published in 1604, said to resolve was “to satisfy”. William Shakespeare had many goes at this word. In Romeo and Juliet he says “be strong … in this resolve”. Here is a word that had its beginning in our language, with its present meaning, around 1591. One of the first users was Shakespeare, who gave us many of the words we now use. My big dictionary contains several pages with the word resolution or resolve or words with a similar meaning, even the meaning of resolve as the softening of a hard tumour or to dissipate pain. The many meanings will have to wait until another day. The dictionaries also include re-solution, which some of them describe as a repeated resolution.
Motion in print goes back several hundred years, but with this meaning the first use in print seems to have been in1579. A book on Aristides suggests Aristides made a motion concerning all the cities of Greece. Several motions were made after that date, from putting something on the table to changing the monarchy to a republic -- even a complaint from some bloke that people wouldn’t listen to his motion. The Macquarie Dictionary gives a good definition of motion, It says a motion is “an idea or plan of action formally put to an assembly for consideration”. Collins says a motion is a formal proposal which the people present vote on. Webster says a motion is a suggestion or a proposal formally made to a deliberative assembly. So far as I am concerned, and it’s a bit too late to change things now, a resolution cannot be achieved without first applying a motion. If the motion is defeated, then no resolution can be achieved. But no doubt meeting chairmen will continue to ask for a resolution when they mean motion. lauriebarber.com; lbword@midcoast.com.au

Meet candidates
Richard Campbell, Esther Quinlan, Elwyn Toby and Caroline Bradshaw from the Ngabu Bingayi Language Group, young artist Malcolm ‘Buster’ Dickson, Kempsey Family Support’s June Wilson and Narelle Moulton and Arthur Bain and Shane Moore from the Bellbrook Progress Association with Kempsey Shire Council’s Olivia Parker in Bellbrook to discuss the public art project
Art celebrates local history LOCAL Indigenous culture and the history of the Macleay will soon be represented through art in key locations with Kempsey Shire Council embarking on several public art projects with community groups and artists. Council recently received an Aboriginal Arts Fund grant from Create NSW to install public artworks in Bellbrook and the Kempsey CBD for the Dhanggati Wiriiyn Yapang (Dunghutti Story Trail) project. Currently being planned, the project will involve contributions from Richard Campbell, Esther Quinlan, Elwyn Toby and Caroline Bradshaw from the Ngabu Bingayi Language Group, emerging Dunghutti artists and local primary schools and preschools. Some of the art to be produced will include
sculptural work to be installed in Bellbrook called Wupu Manhatinum (Travelling Star), marking the Western gateway into Dunghutti country, while young and emerging Dunghutti artists will decorate electricity boxes in the Kempsey CBD. The project is a partnership with Kempsey Family Support Services who are providing support towards workshops with local primary schools and preschools. Also in the planning is the Gateway Sculptures Project which will see two prominent sculptures situated in the roundabouts on the southern (Slim Dusty) and northern (Dunghutti) Pacific Highway interchanges. It is envisaged that the sculptures will reflect the history, landscape and community of the
area while showcasing the Macleay River. After calling for submissions from artists in April, two artists have since been shortlisted by a panel of community members and Council staff. The winning designs will be announced in September. Council’s Community Projects Officer, Olivia Parker, said public art has the capacity to bring the community together through a shared cultural experience. “It helps build a sense of place and connection with our environment and each other. Through these projects we can celebrate and promote the richness and diversity of the Macleay Valley’s stories and culture,” she said.
THE local Resdidents Action Network (RAN) will be conducting a Meet the Candidatates’ Public Forum in the lead-up to the July 29 Port Macquarie-Hastings Mayoral by-election. It will be held on Wednesday, July 26, at 5.30pm at Port City Bowling Club, Owen Street, Port Macquarie. All five of the Candidates have been invited. Everyone in the community is welcome to come along and bring your questions for the candidates with you. RAN continues to focus on issues of its members including the Sherwood Road access onto the roundabout at Oxley Highway, ‘No Quarry’ issues including the Bago area, the new airport terminal and the road leading down to it and multi-level /multi-dwelling buildings right next to houses. RAN is an entirely apolitical and is a voluntary, non-profit organisation. RAN welcomes new members to RAN and membership fees are $10 a year and $5 pensioner concession.
Couple ‘re-tyred’ • From page 1 “But we know the new owners, Peter and Sharon Leicht, will look after them the same way we did.” According to Kerry, Peter is really looking forward to meeting and greeting his new customers. Peter and Sharon take over the South Kempsey Tyre Centre officially on Saturday July 22 but will open on Monday July 24, and will continue with the Kumho platinum dealership. Rego checks will still be available too on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. After Kerry and Bruce’s last day on Friday July 21, you’ll find them on a river or beach somewhere in the Macleay Valley throwing in a fishing line. If not there, then they will be enjoying the sunshine in their garden along with the butterflies and bees.

Forum insights to palliative care PALLIATIVE Care Roundtable Needs: The NSW Government has published reports revealing communities’ palliative care priorities, which will help shape improvements to services across the state. As Parliamentary Secretary for Regional and Rural Health, I have listened to communities’ views on palliative care services at nine regional roundtables across NSW and will be asking the public to provide further feedback in a discussion paper. The roundtables have revealed what each community thinks should be done to improve palliative care services in their area. Priorities put forward include the need for flexible care, ensuring sufficient local staff are trained and available, and making palliative care
EIGHTEEN businesses in Kempsey and Port Macquarie have taken on youth interns as part of a new Commonwealth Government strategy to address high levels of youth unemployment on the Mid North Coast. Local businesses such as Lush Skin and Beauty and Eastland Truss and Timber have jumped on board with internships. Employers are now able to trial young unemployed people through these PaTH Internships, which are short placements for 30 to 50 hours per fortnight to see if they are right for each other. The young people volunteer for these intern positions so have high levels of motivation. Employers do not pay any wages during the internships and receive an incentive payment of $1000. Twenty-one-year-old Kempsey resident Telisha Brazier is rapt to be working fulltime with Lush Skin and Beauty after completing her internship. Telisha says: “The internship gave me a chance to show that I am really keen to work,

services more integrated. I encourage people to read the reports on the roundtable discussions and then provide feedback on a discussion paper, which will be made available next month. The NSW Government committed a record $100 million over the next four years in the 201718 Budget to enhance palliative care and up-skill
regional and rural health staff. We will use the feedback from the roundtables and upcoming discussion paper to further improve palliative care services. The regional roundtables were held in Lismore, Orange, Kempsey, Broken Hill, Tamworth, Newcastle, Griffith, Queanbeyan and Kiama, following a metro roundtable at NSW Parliament House in May. Hundreds of medical personnel, advocates, community organisations and people with personal experience in palliative care joined the roundtables to help shape new directions in palliative care for regional NSW. I now have a deeper understanding of what is working well, what needs improvement and potential local solutions. More than half of all deaths in Australia
occur in hospitals, though many people indicate, at various stages of their lives, that they would prefer to die at home. About 50,000 people die each year in NSW, and this is expected to double by 2056. The reports can be viewed at: http:// www.health.nsw.gov.au/palliativecare/Pages/ Palliative-Care-Roundtables-2017.aspx Does Your Group Need Grant Funding?: So that I can continue to provide information about grants and funding opportunities to local organisations and sporting groups, I would really appreciate it if organisational secretaries could contact my office with updated contact information. am reliable and a quick learner. It helped me get my foot in the door.” Lush Skin and Beauty owner Kim Cochrane says: “Telisha has now become a valuable member of our team after completing her internship. As a new business, finding suitable staff was very important. The ability to trial Telisha through the internship allowed her to show me her skills, work ethics and suitability to the role and I am very happy with her.” Dave Kearsey, Youth Mentor from Tursa Employment & Training, who helped organise the internship says: “This new way of trialing potential employees is proving very popular and already six local unemployed youth have gained ongoing permanent work from internships. Businesses that employ interns can receive up to $10,000 in wage subsidies and incentives so it’s a win-win situation for everyone.” If local businesses want to take up this opportunity or just want some more information all you have to do is contact Dave Kearsey from TURSA on 02 6583 5799.
AUSTRALIAN children will face dramatically different workplaces in 20 years’ time with a new set of skills required for professional success, according to entrepreneur and businessman Creel Price. His warning comes as economists point to a fourth industrial revolution underway that is threatening to wipe out nearly half the jobs in Australia. Global business juggernaut PricewaterhouseCoopers has forecast 44 per cent of Australia’s jobs are at risk over the next 20 years because of technology. Mr Price said children of today would need a ‘portfolio of life skills’ to keep pace with the rapid change to ensure successful working lives in the future. “Some futurists are predicting that children of today will have 40 different jobs across 10 career paths in their working lives,” Mr Price said. “The change ahead means academic ability in subjects like maths and science will play
second fiddle to life skills such as innovation and resourcefulness. “In 20 years, the average corporate job we know today will not exist.” Mr Price said the life skills that would apply to any profession in the future included: • Imagination • Initiative • Resourcefulness • Resilience • Interpersonal skills i.e. team work, leadership and communication. He called for life skills to be incorporated into the core curriculum at Australian primary schools. “It’s important we arm our children with skills today to meet the demands of tomorrow and one of the best ways we can do that is by teaching them entrepreneurship,” Mr Price said. “Entrepreneurship teaches us to keeping trying new approaches when we fail and to be resourceful and creative when it comes to problem-solving.”

Road safety upgrade ONE of the region’s most scenic and important transport routes is about to get a $300,000 safety upgrade to reduce the risk of falling rocks. Member for Oxley Melinda Pavey said rockfall fencing will be installed at three locations on Waterfall Way west of Bellingen. “This work’s in addition to the $3 million provided in the 2017-18 State Budget for a range of safety improvements on Waterfall Way,” Mrs Pavey said. “It’s a busy thoroughfare for tourists visiting the waterfalls on Dorrigo Mountain and is also important for the local timber and agricultural industries. “The fencing, about 24 kilometres west of Bellingen, will improve safety for all motorists by reducing the risk of rocks and other debris falling onto the road.” Work will be carried out on weekdays from between 7am and 6pm and is expected to be complete by the end of August, weather permitting. Delays of up to 15 minutes may be experienced during work hours, as the road will be reduced to one lane for the safety of workers.
Easier pension access
MINISTER for Veterans’ Affairs Dan Tehan says more veterans could now access the Special and Intermediate Rate of Disability Pension as a result of a 2017–18 Budget initiative. The eligibility criteria for the Special and Intermediate Rate of Disability Pension under the Veterans’ Entitlements Act 1986 has been amended to remove work history restrictions for veterans aged 65 and over. “The amendment removes the requirement for veterans to have worked continuously for 10 years with the same employer,” Mr Tehan said. “For self-employed veterans, it removes the requirement to have worked a minimum of 10 years in the same profession.” For more information on the 2017-18 Budget measures, visit the Department of Veterans’ Affairs website at: https://www.dva.gov.au/ about-dva/accountability-and-reporting/budget/ budget-2017-2018.

Colleges get funds boost PORT Macquarie Community College and the Camden Haven Community College have been selected among 34 community education and training providers throughout the State to benefit from almost $19 million in State Government investment for community training. Member for Port Macquarie, Leslie Williams said the NSW Adult Community Education (ACE) Community Service Obligation (CSO) program helped thousands of regional and remote learners in NSW get access to formal education and training to help them increase their chances of finding employment. “Some students need more support and the courses funded through the ACE CSO provide an important pathway for foundation skills, pre-vocational or bridging programs to more formal education and work-related training, with the program giving priority to people with a disability or at-risk groups,” Mrs Williams said. “These organisations are generally small but well connected with the community, providing quality training and support for disadvantaged people to support their transition into further training and jobs, and access to recognised training in regional and remote communities. “Courses funded through the ACE CSO program can provide a pathway for foundation skills, pre-vocational or bridging programs to more formal education and work-related training,” Mrs Williams said. Deputy Premier and Minister for Skills, John Barilaro said funding in the 2017-18 financial year would be made available to 34 existing service providers throughout NSW. “The Government’s Smart and Skilled vocational education and training (VET) is all about providing learners with choice and access to the best training options available,” Mr Barilaro said. “The providers will share funding of almost $19 million to be allocated in two stages over the course of the next financial year. “We need to ensure we are fully inclusive in our efforts to strengthen our skills base by providing VET options that connect communities with further training and jobs.”

NATIONALS Member for Cowper Luke Hartsuyker (pictured) visited the volunteers of Kempsey-Macleay Men’s Shed to congratulate them on receiving a Community Volunteer Grant of $2,400, thanks to the Federal Government. “The growth of the Men’s Shed movement is testament to the impact that it is having in communities like ours,” Mr Hartsuyker said. “Men’s Sheds are a place where men can connect with each other over hardware tools, a cuppa and a yarn. “In Kempsey, the volunteers at the Men’s Shed run a ‘Broadband for Seniors’ program which helps take some of the fear out of using technology for older members of the Macleay Valley community. “They gave me a glimpse of the program and it’s such an asset to this community assisting seniors to stay connected through the internet and emails.”

Basketball’s big reunion By BARBARA DYER
FOUNDING member of the Port Macquarie Basketball Association Carole Rosenbaum has one goal, and she’s going for a slam dunk. Carole, or ‘Rosie’ as she is known, wants as many past and present players and supporters as possible at the tip off for the association’s 50 year reunion in October. “I have stayed in touch with so many of the old crowd over the years through playing and coaching, so it’s coming together,” she says. “I have contacted my whole team from 1969 and we are all still alive and hope to replicate one of our old team photos,” she laughs. “I have people who have confirmed they will be flying in from the US, London, Cambodia and across Australia from Perth. “It’s going to be so much fun. “With five sons who were all involved in basketball, we are like tentacles reaching out to past players, supporters and even our second association president from 1969.” Carole is excited. Basketball is in her blood. “I love the sport, and have loved seeing all my boys and grandsons involved in it,” she says. “I was 13 when I was playing with the 20 somethings who would drive me to matches in Wauchope. I’d have played every night if I could. “We had no courts back then and would play at the Port Macquarie skating rink.” Enter Reg Hoade who, shortly after arriving in Port Macquarie as a teacher in 1968, joined the basketball club as a coach and player. “Reg was appointed to the committee in the days when basketball was played at the old skating rink that was in Hollingsworth Street, behind Dave Gleeson’s garage,” recalls Carole.
A peak at the scrapbook and some of the faces who may be at the Port Macquarie Basketball Association reunion in October “Reg, myself, Keith Heap, Max Banes, John Raddatz and Alan Walsh were instrumental in getting the Port Macquarie-Hastings Council to donate land to play at what is now the Westport Bowling Club car park. “It might have helped that my father (the late Norm Matesich) was mayor,” she laughs. “I might have twisted his arm a bit. “We got our asphalt court with one large light and we played there for many years before getting an indoor court in 1982.” Carole said her Facebook site - Past Players and Supporters of Port Macquarie Basketball had drawn supporters from near and far and, with board.. Nominations have closed. The travelling bowlers AGM will be held on d July 23.

Titans writing NRL fairy tale WE all love a sporting fairy tale and one is shaping in the Titans of 2017. After several years filled with off-field dramas, which led to on-field frustration, the Gold Coast team made a finals appearance against the odds last year. With some good recruiting and local players maturing, they looked like an even stronger chance in 2017. But Lady Luck can play some cruel jokes on teams and their fans. This season has been an injury nightmare for the team from the Glitter Strip. At times they have had almost an entire run-on list out injured. But they kept battling and were able to eke out the odd win. Well those wins have now become gold. With almost their top squad back the Titans are making a bold late run for the finals. They confirmed that by upsetting the reigning premiers last weekend. There is a lot to like about the current day Titans. They just never throw the towel in. And
are still punching above their weight when the final siren sounds. They also have a very smart attack playbook. The fact that the Gold Coast had three players in Origin – Hayne, Wallace and Peats – will also have massive flow-on effects. Peats and Wallace would have learnt more during that series then 10 NRL seasons. Expect that to flow through the whole squad. And don’t worry about Hayne. He is worth every cent the Gold Coast paid out. If there is one player who can lift this team in these final seven games it is the ‘Hayne Plane’. Let’s tip some winners: Broncos v Bulldogs (Thursday, July 20, 7.50pm, Suncorp Stadium, Brisbane): Broncos scraped home against the Knights while the Dogs had a bye last weekend. This is at Suncorp and the Broncos are post Origin and in finals mode. Wayne Bennett has coached better Brisbane teams, but although the Storm are consistent

there are no standout clubs. The master will be plotting another title. • Your Local Independent tips: Broncos Roosters v Knights (Friday, July 21, 6pm, Allianz Stadium, Sydney): Been saying it all season – you just want to give the Knights a ‘w’ for how hard they try. But that won’t come this weekend. Roosters are coming off a bye with Origin stars back. • Your Local Independent tips: Roosters Sharks v Rabbitohs (Friday, July 21, 7.50pm, Southern Cross Group Stadium, Cronulla): Sharkies will be very keen to shake off that loss to the Titans. Their Origin contingent should now have their breath back. The Rabbits lost to NQ last weekend and just can’t seem to get their mojo back. • Your Local Independent tips: Sharks Panthers v Titans (Saturday, July 22, 3pm, Pepper Stadium, Penrith): The Panthers are coming off a tough away win over the Warriors

and they are at home, but can they spoil the Titans fairy tale – don’t think so. The Gold Coast are expecting even more troops back (Paasi and possibly Elgey), while the Panthers should be ushering in Moylan and Wallace. However Merrin is out with a knee injury. • Your Local Independent tips: Titans Raiders v Storm (Saturday, July 22, 5.30pm, GIO Stadium, Canberra): The bounce went Raiders way last weekend against the Dragons. But the Storm seldom depend on ‘the bounce’. The Melbourne Machine is post-Origin and looking awesome. • Your Local Independent tips: Storm Cowboys v Warriors (Saturday, July 22, 7.30pm, 1300SMILES Stadium, Townsville): The Cowboys are kicking on without JT. The Warriors are always a danger and are in a log-jam on 18 points, just outside the eight. They have the incentive to win, but can’t see it happening. • Your Local Independent tips: Cowboys

Dragons v Sea Eagles (Sunday, July 23, 2pm, WIN Stadium, Wollongong): Dragons are due for a form reversal and some luck. But they have a tough hurdle here. Manly look very classy and are being whispered as genuine title chances. • Your Local Independent tips: Sea Eagles Tigers v Eels (Sunday, July 23, 4pm, ANZ Stadium, Sydney): Eels should stay safe in the eight with a win here. A loss would be very costly and can’t see that happening considering the Tigers’ woeful recent form. • Your Local Independent tips: Eels
