They won’t forget Kempsey band’s Anzac tradition lives on

By CHRISTINA PARKIN THE Kempsey District Silver Band has never forgotten. As we all pause on Monday to reflect on the sacrifices given by the members of our armed forces across time, we are asked – Lest We Forget. For 67 years the Kempsey District Silver Band have kept the Diggers in the forefront of our minds. Every year, since 1950, they have led the Anzac Day parades in Kempsey. On Monday they will proudly again take up their position. Organisers across the region are again tipping record crowds at local Anzac Day parades. Even the smaller town of Kendall has resurrected the Dawn Service for the second time after a forty year break. (See Pages 6-7 for Your Local Independent’s Anzac Day guide). However the Kempsey District Silver Band have deservedly etched their own chapter in the annals of local Anzac Day history. Mr R L Sands, the Bandmaster from 193336, once asked: “What is a town without a band?” and it is this proud tradition that sees the Kempsey District Silver Band revered for its association with Anzac Day. • Continued Page 6

Silhouette Woods is lead singer for local band Hunt For Home. She is also an ambassador for anti-bullying organisation Bystander Revolution. Other band members are, from left, Kyle Moore, Wade Mobbs and Luke Glover.

The voice of reason Silhouette sings for a better world

By LIZZIE McLEOD A YOUNG Port Macquarie entertainer with amazing vocals is using her voice to create a better world. Solo artist and vocalist for local band ‘Hunt for Home’ Silhouette Woods is an International Ambassador for Bystander Revolution, an organisation that aims to stop bullying. “I’m the only Australian international ambassador for Bystander Revolution,” said Silhouette Woods. “In my last years of school I was bullied really badly and because of that I didn’t want to let it get me down. I wanted to do something positive about it and I wanted to help other people. “Even in my band ‘Hunt for Home’, we agreed no one should ever be treated like, or made feel like, they don’t belong because of how they look or who they are and we are all about acceptance and being yourself. “Being the ambassador it’s really cool because I can speak to people about it. I meet with all the other international ambassadors in America and we Skype and talk about different things we can do to help kids. “We have a website where we have videos of a lot of famous celebrities who have had things happen to them too and we show how

to deal with it. “We have spoken to Lily Collins, who is an actress and is in a lot of great teenage movies. She spoke to us about what we are doing and how she supported us. It is a really positive and really good organisation that does help.” Silhouette has her own advice for others going through what she experienced in high school. “It’s definitely going to be difficult but it’s going to be worth it,” she says. “At some point you will look back and realize that part of your life was like going through a tunnel and then suddenly you’re in the light again. “At the end of the day as long as you know who you are it doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks of you. This is your life so don’t let a small part of your life ruin the rest of your life. Take what you’ve learnt and grow with it.” Silhouette is focusing on positive goals in her musical life as well. “I’m releasing a new single and music video very soon called ‘Coldness’,” she said. “It’s all in the works and it’s been recorded and I’m really happy with it.” The singer/songwriter receives constant support from family, friends, and especially her band ‘Hunt for Home’. “I’ve been singing since I was three so it’s always something I’ve done,” Silhouette said.

“I originally was trained to sing opera and classical music. I still do that occasionally. And the boys (in the band) are like ‘that’s so weird, how do you do that’. But then I was like ‘nah I want to sing this sort of music. I want to sing rock’.” Inspiration stems from within for Silhouette Woods. “A lot of my own experiences in life or different things that I think or hold close inspire me to sing and write,” she says. “Being in a band writing songs is very different from writing as a solo artist. “I write all the songs for the band but the boys will be like, ‘Oh, can you write a song about this or can you add this in or I think this would also be really cool’. So it’s taking on other people’s ideas and being able to mould those to be able to use as a song to touch people I guess. “The band is involved in my work, sometimes they will play in a track or help me out with something.” To follow up on her new release ‘Coldness’, visit her facebook page at www.facebook.com/ silhouettewoods/ Or, www.facebook.com/huntforhome Also check out the Bystander Revolution website for more information about what Silhouette is supporting at www. bystanderrevolution.org

THE Coffs Harbour Highway ‘headache’ is about to become a painful memory. For any motorist travelling north, the Pacific Highway stretch through the centre of Coffs Harbour rates as the state’s most stop/start section of major road outside of Sydney. There are twelve sets of traffic lights, spanning a 5.5km section of the Pacific Hwy between Isles Drive and Park Beach Rd. It has perpetually been voted one of the most frustrating sections of roads in New South Wales by NRMA members. The exploration of a Coffs Harbour bypass has been proposed since 2001 as part of the Pacific Highway upgrade. With a preferred route announced in 2004 and a concept design report published in 2008, funding priorities have overlooked the bypass despite a commitment to full duplication of the Pacific Highway between Hexham and the Queensland border by 2020. In March 2015 the NSW Government pledged $200 million for construction of the project, subject to a business case. The project has been allocated funding to carry out the environmental assessment and to finalise the concept design. Surveyors and project managers from RCA Australia have started on-ground site investigations to determine drilling locations for geotechnical work associated with the two tunnels associated with the bypass. “The $7 billion Pacific Highway Upgrade is powering along at great speed, so it’s very important we fast-track preliminary work such as this on the bypass so we are ready to dovetail the start of the bypass construction with the completion of the Pacific Highway Upgrade,” Mr Luke Hartsuyker, Federal Member for Cowper, said. “It has been a long time coming, and long-suffering residents will welcome this as a heartening sign of things to come, as preliminary work on the project continues to ramp up.” A Roads and Maritime Services spokesperson said the Coffs Harbour Bypass is aimed at improving road safety, cutting down travel time and improved accessibility to the central business district. “The Coffs Harbour Bypass project includes a 14 kilometre motorway upgrade to the Pacific Highway and connects England’s Road in the south with the newly upgraded Sapphire to Woolgoolga section in the north,” the Roads and Maritime spokesperson said. More information, including a map of the preferred route can be found on the website www.rms.nsw.gov.au/CoffsHarbourBypass Interest in the project can be registered by phoning the Pacific Highway Office on 1800 550 621 or emailing CoffsHarbourBypass@rms. nsw.gov.au

LETTER WEEK

Sandy Mackenzie

OF THE

Brought to you by

I WAS very blessed last weekend to have some special family time. My grandmother and aunty flew in from NZ to the Gold Coast where two of her daughters live with their grandchildren. Her other daughter flew in from Perth and I drove up from Port Macquarie after doing a day of appointments in Kempsey. I see my gran every couple of years for about a week and I love the time we do get to share; even though it is few and far between, I always cherish her visits. She is my step-gran but she has always been there for me and we have an amazing connection. Seeing my aunty was a real treat. There is only 6 years between us; so we are really more like sisters who share the same whacky sense of humour and really understand each other because we are so similar in so many ways. The other thing is that she reminds me of my mum who passed away at 56 years young; just 3 years older than I am now! Catching up with my cousins after nearly 8 years was great. So much has happened, their children are growing up and becoming beautiful souls who are credit to their parents and grandparents before them. It really was a fantastic couple of days and I really enjoyed connecting with family again. Even if it was only for a short time. I feel truly blessed!

Banked money takes a long holiday IT’S amazing in this day and age, how electronic transfers of money manage to find their way out of your account on a public holiday, yet not find its designated destination on a public holiday. As the owner of a small business, I was horrified to realise regular and scheduled wage payments to my employees, which regularly came out of my bank account on a Friday, came out as usual on Good Friday, but were not received by my employees until the Tuesday after Easter, instead of Saturday. When I started to enquire among some business associates, it became

re-scheduling payments of pensions before a public holiday? Can you imagine the outcry if pensions were not received prior to a public holiday. Why is it, that ordinary and hardworking wage earners have to bear the brunt of the banks’ moneymaking ventures? Come on banks – get real and get your processes organised with the customer in mind. Miriam Boughton Port Macquarie (Editor’s note: Was this an issue for anyone else over Easter? W’d love to know if this is a widespread occurrence.)

with this manipulation of funds. On enquiry to my local bank, I was told I should have realised it was a public holiday and re-scheduled the payments to be paid before Good Friday, as is done by the government for Centrelink pensions that fall on a Public Holiday. Can you imagine how much extra work any business would need to do to reschedule hundreds of transfers? Why can’t the banks recognise that it should not matter if a payment/ deposit transfer has to be paid on a public holiday – they should just allow it to happen as per normal! Why does the government not get penalised for

apparent my situation was not unique. One real estate agent was expecting a movement of $150,000 in rental payments to go into the accounts of landlords on Good Friday, but they too were not received until the following Tuesday. Employees of that business were also not paid as expected on the Friday either. So what happens to these funds? As they are set up digitally to transfer between bank accounts with no further human intervention, why the delay? I can only imagine the banks would make umpteen millions on the short term money market over Easter

Buggy warpath ON Thursday, April 7 at approx. 11.30am after finishing at the Commonwealth Bank ATM at Wauchope, I turned to walk down the footpath, when a woman on a mobile buggy raced past me at speed. As I had my back turned and the buggy made no sound, half a step more and she would have knocked me down.

I always thought pedestrians had the right of way on a footpath, but this woman seemed to think she had the right to speed down the footpath with no consideration for anyone else. This raises the questions: Who would have been liable for my injuries? What speed are buggies allowed on a footpath? Should they not have a number plate?

Don’t cut services I SUPPORT Sandra Wilson’s letter ‘Train services should not be cut’ from April 14, 2016. As many seniors require medical

procedures in Sydney and Newcastle and no longer have a driver’s licence, it is ill conceived that one will have to book on-line even if you have no computer and carry on your own luggage, not to mention getting off the train, across the step to the platform. Wauchope loyal staff deserve better than to be laid off in some cost cutting exercise. Beverley Sharpe Port Macquarie

TO Craig from Telstra who fixed our home line phone. He was very helpful and did a great job, thanks Craig.

I AM 88 and my wife is 81, on Easter Saturday morning I booked a taxi for the airport. When he arrived he stopped on the other side of the road even though there was a parking space on our side and he sat in the cab while my wife and I each struggled with luggage across the road and up the high step in to the Maxi Taxi. He called from his seat, ‘Close the door!’. Being on a steep slope in Cross Street I had to pull the sliding door up hill. After four attempts I gave up. It was very heavy. He reluctantly go out and slammed the door. Whatever happened to polite taxi drivers?

Painting our paradise By SUE PATERICK PERCHED high in the hinterland of the Macleay Valley, where deep valleys and razorback ridges tumble west into the setting sun, artist, Mark Pryor, takes inspiration from his natural surroundings. Working in watercolours, soft pastels and oils, he loves to explore colour and movement and how light dances with nature. While he doesn’t have a favourite medium because each has its particular quality, Mark likes the spontaneity and fluidity of watercolours. He has developed unique glazing and acrylic-masking techniques with watercolour, which creates vibrant images of sparkling light from deep within the painting. To enhance those flashes of light, Mark uses gold leaf. Being a surfer, he was drawn to the Macleay Valley’s beaches but chose to live in its amazing hinterland. The shire’s laid-back nature and welcoming attitude also impressed him. “When we first arrived in Kempsey back in 1978, it was an undiscovered gem with cheap land in beautiful surrounds,” he said. “And people just bypassed it.” As a boy back in Sydney, Mark always liked painting but only discovered his hidden talent when he began copying his Dad’s art and signwriting. At high school Mark did illustrations for his school’s magazine. When he told his parents that he wanted to leave school at 16 and become a fulltime artist, they were horrified and suggested he complete his HSC. After a short career as a screen printer, Mark scored a job in the Public Service and moved north to pursue his artistic career with paradise as his muse.

Artist Mark Pryor painting his major piece in his Reflections series for a commission for Walker’s Crematorium and Memorial Gardens Over the last 30 years he has been involved in many solo and group exhibitions. In December 2015 his work was part of a group exhibition of Australian artists in Rome, called The Kangaroos Visit. His art also hangs at Kempsey Shire Council, Old lodge Gallery at Gladstone, Wonderland Gallery and Framing in Kempsey, ArtMakas Gallery also in Kempsey and Cooks Hill Galleries in Newcastle. For the past five or six years, Mark has been focusing on solo exhibitions at the Macleay Valley Community Gallery at Gladstone and recently held a successful exhibition at the Nexus Gallery in Bellingen. He is currently working on a commission of a range of artworks for Walker’s Crematorium and Memorial Gardens, which is opening soon in Frederickton. The main piece of this stunning body of

work, entitled Reflections, is a 2.6m x 1.5m oil painting of a tranquil rainforest. It is so beautiful, you can almost hear the waterfall splash as it cascades into the sundappled creek. All the works will be focused on balancing the elements of fire, water, earth and air, but each will be different. “I thought about the project and being a crematorium there is a fire element there already, so I wanted to balance that energy with water, earth and air,” Mark explained. His advice to budding artists is to stay true to your vision and don’t paint what you think other people might like. “If you paint your vision other people will love it because it has your passion,” he said. To checkout his light-filled landscapes or for more information phone 6566 9137, go to www. markpryorartist.com, or check his Facebook page.

Domestic violence victims assisted

WELCOME news has arrived for two existing specialist homelessness service providers in Kempsey and Port Macquarie. Women and children experiencing domestic violence across Port Macquarie and Kempsey will be supported with round-the-clock assistance, extra accommodation and support with an additional $660,000 funding package announced last week. Local members Leslie Williams and Melinda Pavey said the new funding came at a time when services were being stretched to meet demand. Member for Oxley Melinda Pavey said: “It is a terrible reality that there is this demand for services, but we will not let women who need help go unaided.” Member for Port Macquarie Leslie Williams said: “The boost to local services will mean women and children escaping domestic and family violence will have access to support, accommodation, financial assistance, transport and food, 24 hours a day.” The two existing women’s specialist homelessness service-providers that will receive additional funding over the next two years are the Samaritans Foundation with $329,000 (Kempsey) and the Port Macquarie-Hastings Domestic and Family Violence Specialist Service with $329,000. In addition the Warrina Domestic and Family Violence Specialist Service Co-operative Ltd in Coffs Harbour will receive an additional $370,000. Women fleeing domestic violence are also eligible for a rental subsidy. If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic violence, call 000 if you feel there is an immediate danger. For information and support, call the NSW Domestic Violence Line on 1800 656 463 or 1800 RESPECT on 1800 737 732. Lest We Forget - Anzac Day 2016

Kempsey District Silver Band will be centre stage again • From Page 1 First established in 1886, the ‘Kempsey Brass Band’ made its debut on April 2, 1886. The band has had several iterations and brief interludes, but it has always been the support of the town that has eventually seen its ongoing survival. Interestingly, it has always been lack of financial support to pay the bandmaster, or the need for a practise room, which has led to the various recesses. Records from the Macleay Argus for September 11, 1919, show the ‘Kempsey Brass Band’ re-formed in March 1919 with bandmaster, Mr Lovell. However, with a debt of over 50 pounds for new instruments, and little collections taken on the Saturday night performances, it was felt that “It will be a serious matter if the Band ceases to exist and Kempsey goes back to the period of gloom experienced during the three years just passed.” Eerily prophetic, the Macleay Chronicle (1899 – 1952) reported in the May 2, 1917 edition that “Anzac Day, which was duly observed on Wednesday, is a celebration that will live long in Australian history and in the memory of Australians. “Year by year it will be good to remember how the best and bravest of our sons braved death and danger voluntarily in a righteous cause, and as regards a very large number, sealed their devotion with their life-blood. ‘Theirs not to reason why: theirs but to do and die.’ “And they did and died.

“In an age when sometimes everything seems to be obscured by miserable self-seeking and wretched sectarian jealousies and spites, can we ever forget the heroes of Gallipoli? Novices in the baleful art of war, they yet acquitted themselves in the manner of the oldest veterans. “If she could only raise more volunteers, to take their honoured places than are now coming forward, Australia would have an easier mind, and would look forward into the unknown with brighter hopes and fuller assurance of success. “These, and many other reflections, were aroused by the impressive celebrations – the

march of the military, the torchlight processions, the solemn services in the churches: Still if wisdom is gained by painful experience, present humiliations may not be wholly fruitless.” Records from the Macleay Chronicle for Wednesday, April 26, 1916 also show that the Kempsey region commemorated Anzac Day with various church services and assemblies at Kempsey, Hickey’s Creek and South West Rocks. At all services, funds were raised ‘in aid of the local fund for Australian wounded soldiers’ or for ‘local Red Cross funds’. The first recorded ‘procession’ organised

for Anzac Day in the Macleay was found in the Macleay Chronicle for April 23, 1930 and when the Kempsey-Macleay RSL opened its Memorial Hall in 1933, the Band once again led that procession. The Returned Service League of Australia (RSL) is also celebrating its centenary of service to the nation’s defenders. With origins as the ‘Returned Sailors’ Soldiers’ and Airmen’s Imperial League of Australia’ or as ‘Returned Soldiers Association’, clubrooms were provided by public subscription all over Australia to become a regular place of comradeship and support for those who had returned. With no organised repatriation process, there was also a need for a common voice to present the interests of these service personnel. The Kempsey-Macleay RSL Sub-branch is one of the earliest sub-branches formed in the state in 1918, and existed until 1924, when it then went into recess for four years before Dr McElhone revived the sub-branch in 1929. By 1927, every state observed some form of public holiday on Anzac Day. By the mid1930s all the rituals we now associate with the day – dawn vigils, marches, memorial services, reunions, two-up games – were firmly established as part of Anzac Day culture. Your Local Independent wishes to acknowledge the assistance of Philip Lee from the Macleay River Historical Society in researching this story.

Lest We Forget - Anzac Day 2016

Governor to lead Port March

Veteran lives on in hymns By CHRISTINA PARKIN THERE will be a familiar face missing at this year’s Anzac Day commemorative service in Port Macquarie. Captain Geoffrey Baskett MBE died on March 12. The centurion had never missed the local service in the 19 years he had been here. At his recent memorial service held at the Port Macquarie Baptist Church, more than 125 people in attendance attended were told of Geoffrey’s remarkable legacy he left in Papua New Guinea, after arriving as a missionary in 1933 and serving as an army captain in Milne Bay during World War II and beyond for over 56 years. Geoffrey had lived in Port Macquarie for the past 19 years - attending and participating in every Anzac day memorial service here during that time. He has resided at the Bethany Aged Care Facility for his last years, having celebrated his 100th Birthday there last November. Geoffrey was a recipient of an Australian Service Medal 1945 – 1975 and an MBE, presented by the NSW Governor in 1990 at a landmark ceremony at Government House NSW, to mark his valuable contribution to PNG, Australia and Britain for over 56 loyal years of

Captain Geoffrey Basket (left) at his 1990 MBE presentation in Sydney with NSW Governor, Rear Admiral Peter Ross Sinclair, Vivienne Nutt, Mr Alan Nutt and Mrs Elaine Nutt service. Geoffrey was born at Kohat in the high Himalayan Mountains of India and as a teenager, he left Sydney for a six-week visit in 1933 to Kwato, an island off the southeast coast of Papua. That visit turned into nearly 60 years of service to the nation of PNG. Geoffrey worked day and night shifts on tractors and a gold dredge on the Bulolo gold fields, served on the islands and mainland with Australia New Guinea Administrative Unit (ANGAU) during World War II, where he rose through the ranks from private to captain. He also worked in various capacities on the staff of the well-known Kwato Mission and founded a complex (Kristen Redio) for the production of Christian radio programs for nineteen radio stations before his ‘retirement’ to Australia. Retirement from 1990 in Sydney was spent living with Alan and Elaine Nutt at Castle Hill, teaching English to Asian students attending the Redeemer Baptist School.

A move was made with Alan and Elaine Nutt to Port Macquarie in 1997 before residing at Bethany Aged Care Facility since 2009. Geoffrey Baskett tells of the songs he wrote, and his love for PNG, in his autobiography ‘Islands and Mountains’. Geoffrey’s song compositions were revered, one becoming the national anthem for PNG for a time before being passed over at independence in 1975 for a new composition. “Four songs I have written are now printed in a hymn book that is in wide use in Papua New Guinea, and I have often thought that these songs have contributed more to this nation than any book I could have written,” Geoffrey writes in his autobiography. “After all, a book once it has been read is usually put away on a shelf for a very long time before it is read again, whereas a song, usually a hymn, is used time and time again, often long after the death of the composer.”

HIS Excellency General The Honourable David Hurley AC DSC (Ret’d), Governor of New South Wales, accompanied by Mrs Linda Hurley, will mark this year’s Anzac Day in Port Macquarie. The Governor will lead the Anzac Day March through Port Macquarie and deliver the Anzac Day address at the mid-morning service at the Port Macquarie War Memorial. He will also attend the Dawn Service. His Excellency will acknowledge local men and women whose service to Australia has been so significant. “After commemorating Anzac Day in Sydney last year, delivering the Dawn Service Address at the Cenotaph and leading the Sydney March, Linda and I are keen to mark this year’s Anzac Day in a regional town,” Governor Hurley said. “From the North Coaster marches to the Western Front, the Port Macquarie region contributed so much to our service in the First World War. I am looking forward to meeting local veterans, families and descendants.”

REMEMBERING Our War Veterans: I am encouraging our local community to reflect on the service and sacrifice of Australia’s service personnel from all wars and conflicts this Anzac Day. A number of commemorative events will be held in the Hastings next Monday, as we continue to commemorate the Centenary of the First World War and other major events in Australia’s military history. Anzac Day is an opportunity for our community to take the time to pause and remember those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice for their country. Early Childhood Teaching Scholarship Awarded: A local early childhood teacher has been awarded a scholarship to assist with the upgrade of her qualifications to a four-year degree. The Diploma qualified early educators are the beneficiaries of the NSW Government’s commitment to strengthen early childhood education for children in rural and remote communities in New South Wales. This week’s announcement will see a scholarship of up to $10,000 awarded to assist with the costs of upgrading to a degree. Local recipient Amanda Monckton from St Agnes Preschool & Long Day Care Centre has been awarded a scholarship that will assist in the costs of undertaking the additional study.

$$ well spent

How long have you lived in or around the Hastings? I moved from Canberra (don’t hold that against me) to Wauchope in 1998, then to Port a few years later and haven’t looked back. What do you love most about the Hastings? I love the fact I can head west to the mountains and country towns or east to our gorgeous beaches and the Hastings River. I love the huge choice of cafes and restaurants on offer and the laid back lifestyle of the locals. Where do you work and what do you love about your work? I work for Stockland Retirement at two local Villages; Bellevue Gardens Retirement Village and Parklands Village and love finding suitable homes for our over 55-yearolds. I love talking to our residents and hearing their stories, they have much to tell and lots of wise words. What do you like least about your work? The paperwork, I would much rather be away from my desk and out and about. How do you start your day? A 30-minute walk then a cup of tea and a poached egg on toast. What do you do in your spare time? Love putting the boat in the water with my husband and spending a couple of hours fishing in our beautiful waterways. Enjoy ‘playing’ in my garden and creating a nice space to relax in. I love going for a drive to places I haven’t been before and enjoy listening to music and spending time with my gorgeous granddaughter, family and friends. What is the achievement you are most proud of? I don’t have one single thing. I love seeing the happy faces of our residents and I find it very satisfying to watch them embrace our little community once they move into the village. It lights me up to see them happy and thriving in their new home and knowing that I am involved in that part of their journey.

THERE is a lot of roadworks happening in our local government area and some of it is major. For example Hastings River Drive, The Blackbutt/Lake Road roundabout and most recently Lord St is being upgraded and re-sealed. Cr Intemann and myself, through our portfolio of Roads and Infrastructure, are meeting regularly with staff and getting some good news on the direction of our road works program. In 2014/15 Councillors allocated specific funding for the commencement of the low trafficked road resurfacing program. This program followed from the ARRB report commissioned by Council that determined that whilst Council’s road hierarchy and road maintenance systems ensured the high risk road issues were appropriately managed, our lower trafficked local roads (with minimal traffic) would benefit from proactive maintenance specifically resealing to prevent future road deterioration which would result in much higher reconstruction costs in the longer term. In 2014/15 this program saw the resealing of local roads throughout Lake Cathie, Bonny Hills and parts of Lakewood (around Sirius Drive) with over 60km of roads resealed.

INSIDE COUNCIL With Mike Cusato Portfolios: Major Projects; Roads and Infrastructure and Economic Development, Events and Tourism

This work has drastically reduced road maintenance in these areas, and allowed those funds to be channelled into other road maintenance across the LGA. Following on from the successful completion of this program, the current 2015/16 has been focused on the Camden Haven area, resealing almost all local roads east of the Pacific Highway. This program is nearing completion with only a few more weeks of works to go and on completion will have seen approximately 70km of roads resealed. As we look towards the finalisation of budgets and programs for the upcoming 2016/17 financial year, the continuation of this important program will be maintained.

Bloody! We said it, so let’s move on

GEORGE Shaw created a sensation when ‘Pygmalion’ opened in London in 1914. He had Eliza Doolittle utter the words “Walk! Not bloody likely”. For a long time later, people who wanted to use the word bloody were heard to use ‘not Pygmalion likely’. Shaw commented in 1914: “I do not know anything more ridiculous than the refusal of some newspapers to print the word ‘bloody’, which is in common use by four fifths of the English nation.” I thought about Shaw when I watched a television commercial recently. Until about Christmas a car driver in the commercial was heard to say ‘bloody caravans’. A boy in the back seat would then repeat ‘bloody caravans’. Somebody complained, because recent commercials have the driver say simply ‘caravanners’ and the boy repeat ‘caravanners’. My big dictionary recorded the use of the word in the year 1000. Shakespeare used it and Dickens used it a couple of hundred years later. The word had two uses – one involving the use of blood and the other as an intensifier. Australian tourism had a campaign that used the expression ‘where the bloody hell are you?’ That was one of our more unforgettable campaigns.

my

LAURIE BARBER

The Bulletin in 1904 described the word as ‘the Australian adjective’. The word was considered respectable in Britain until about 1750. Then it was considered profane. In the twentieth century, it was seen as nothing more than an intensifier, in other words ‘it’s bloody hot’ or ‘it’s bloody cold’. It is now used mostly in Australia and New Zealand and surprisingly seems to have had little use in America. Americans seem to use it only when making fun of the British. Many people have tried to describe where the word comes from. Some say it came from the Dutch ‘bloote’. In the 1940s, an Australian divorce court judge held that ‘the word bloody was so common in modern parlance that it was not regarded as swearing’. The transportation of British convicts to

Australia resulted in the word being entrenched on these shores. In 1847 a writer called A Marjoribanks wrote a London article called ‘Travels in NSW’ and he said about the ‘favourite oath’ he had encountered here: “I had once the curiosity to count the number of times a bullock driver used the word in the course of a quarter of an hour, and found that he did so 25 times. I gave him eight hours in the day to sleep and six to be silent, thus leaving ten hours for conversation. I supposed that he had commenced at twenty and continued till seventy years of age … and found that in the course of that time he must have pronounced this disgusting word no less than 18,200,000 times.” Not so long ago in the newspapers we would see b….. where such a word was supposed to go. Of course, even though we didn’t read bloody we all knew the dots spelt out the word ‘bloody’, so the dots seemed a bit pointless to me. I will write about the word hell some time. I recall that a few years ago a town in the USA tried to encourage people to greet each other with the word ‘heaveno’. ‘Heaveno’ didn’t take off. lauriebarber.com;lbword@midcoast.com.au

Rotary rewards volunteer workers

Anzac road closures

RECOGNITION is usually never sought by volunteers, so Port Macquarie Rotary decided to ensure that the community gave them the opportunity to have their efforts acknowledged. This year is the third year recognition has been given to those who volunteer to support emergencies and crisis situations in the area from South West Rocks to the Camden Haven in the south. The winner of the 2016 Emergency Services Volunteer Award is Shane Hughes, who has been a volunteer with the Port Macquarie SES for 35 years. Shane was honoured with the other two finalists, Marine Rescue volunteer Wendy Young and community volunteer, Janice Downs, at a special dinner attended by local MP for Port Macquarie, Leslie Williams. Initially attracted to assist with road rescues in 1981, Shane was one of the SES team members assisting with the tragic Kempsey Bus crash in December 1989. Shane also received a Brave Conduct Award from the Governor General for assisting in a rescue of persons stranded in a bus swept off a flooded causeway at Mt Seaview in 1991. Program aims to end ‘black spots’ ALMOST everyone in the Port MacquarieHastings area has been touched by road trauma in some way. It could be directly through loss or injury of family, friends or colleagues caused by a car crash. Or it can be as simple as having a near miss while driving or witnessing a smash, even if it’s only on television. Who can forget the horrific images from the Clybucca bus crash. Decades on, its impacts still resonate through the Mid North Coast community and haunt the lives or those involved in the recovery – SES, ambulance and police officers, health workers and clean-up crews. Here on the Mid North Coast, we have some of the most dangerous stretches of roads in the country. The Pacific Highway Upgrade, which is powering along from Port Macquarie all the way to Ballina, will go a long way in addressing some of our most notorious stretches of road. Aside from the $7 billion Pacific Highway Upgrade increasing road safety exponentially, there are economic benefits to the community which go beyond just improving freight efficiency and travel times. The annual economic cost of road crashes is estimated at $27 billion per year in Australia. It’s pleasing to see significant progress in education, legislation and road upgrades undertaken over several decades which have dramatically reduced fatalities. While we see thousands of workers toiling around Port Macquarie and Kundabung on the Pacific Highway Upgrade, there is work happening on the Port Macquarie road network which has a major impact on road accidents, through simple improvements through the Federal Black Spot Program. This program has been extremely effective in reducing accidents and fatalities, often where minor road improvements can lead to a much greater level of safety. Black Spot funding is all about saving lives.

Graffiti blasted

AFTER a busy 12 months of graffiti blasting, the Port Macquarie-Hastings region is seeing a significant reduction in the amount of graffiti appearing throughout the community. Under the guidance of Port MacquarieHastings Council, the Graffiti Blasters program is being resourced by a band of dedicated volunteers who have taken on the mammoth task of managing graffiti. Established in February 2015, the Graffiti Blasters have volunteered hundreds of hours to remove graffiti from more than 500 locations throughout our region, with high profile sites including the ‘Food for Less’ building and netball courts in Port Macquarie and Oxley Laneway in Wauchope all being cleaned up. “The efforts of the Graffiti Blasters are appearing to pay real dividends with sites where graffiti has been removed not being hit again,” said Director Tricia Bulic. “Our team have worked closely with the community to increase understanding of how to best manage graffiti, and have even collected evidence and provided photos to assist local police. “Council would like to remind the community that graffiti offenders can be charged with criminal damage and even imprisonment under the NSW Crimes Act.” While the Graffiti Blasters are making a real difference within our community, managing graffiti is an ongoing challenge and anyone with information which might help identify offenders is urged to contact Council or Crime Stoppers. If you’d like to assist Council by being part of the Graffiti Blasters program call 6581 8111 or visit pmhc.nsw.gov.au/volunteering.

THE COWPER REPORT With Luke Hartsuyker

Federal Member for Cowper

If we address accident-prone locations by investing in the infrastructure required to make them safe, we can reduce the risks to road users. Last week I announced Federal Black Spot funding for two troublesome intersections in Port Macquarie. The council will receive $154,035 to construct

kerb extensions to move the stop and give-way signs at the intersection of Bridge Street and Gore Street. And at the intersection of Hill Street and Granite Street, $150,030 will be spent on installing a single lane roundabout. Even simple upgrades recommended by the Black Spot program so often lead to dramatic improvements in safety. An evaluation of the Black Spot Program has found that fatal and casualty crashes are reduced at treated sites by 30%, equaling one life per year for every 84 projects. Black Spot projects also return almost $7 for every $1 invested by reducing the number and cost of crashes. The economic flow on costs of car crashes to the community go well beyond the

inconvenience of close roads and freight routes. The cost to the health system, insurance premium rises and the loss of income for families and rehabilitation expenses, are just the tip of the iceberg. Port Macquarie residents will recognise the history of these two intersections, including perhaps own experiences of a near miss or seeing emergency services at these sites first-hand. Let’s hope the Black Spot upgrades will erase some of the danger and eliminate some risk. The large network of country roads around the Port Macquarie region costs council a lot of money to maintain and repair, let alone upgrade - which is where Black Spot funding comes to the fore.

the ineligible patients “The flu season is almost here and no one has an excuse not get their flu jab, given it is now much easier to access,” Mr Hartsuyker said. “By improving accessibility of the vaccine we can vaccinate more patients, reducing the burden on our health care system and doctor surgeries. “We only have to look to Queensland, where almost 2000 influenza cases have already been reported this Autumn, to see how contagious this illness is. If a patient in a vulnerable population group gets the flu there’s up to a 12% chance they can end up in ICU and possibly even die from complications such as pneumonia,” Mr Hartsuyker said. Health professionals recommend vulnerable groups such as the elderly, pregnant women and those with respiratory illness or immune disorders get their flu shot. Healthy people should also access a flu jab to ensure vulnerable patients have less chance of incidental exposure. Deliveries of the super flu vaccination Quadrivalent, which protects against four strains of flu, has also now arrived at some North Coast pharmacies, despite shortages being reported in some parts of the country. Terry White Chemist pharmacist Callan Beesley said: “The flu vaccine changes every year because the flu virus changes every year. Previously only trivalent (three different types of flu) vaccines have been used then last year a Quadrivalent (four types) was released and was much more effective.” Mr Hartsuyker said residents across the electorate should consult with their GP or local pharmacy about their flu vaccine early, before the onslaught of the traditional winter influenza months.

Warning: catch may be sickening THE NSW Food Authority advises fishers to avoid eating Spanish Mackerel above 10kgs, as there is an increased risk of ciguatera poisoning. Commercial fishers, recreational fishers and consumers should not eat large Spanish Mackerel, as two recent ciguatera poisoning incidents involving 20kg and 40kg fish that were caught and consumed on the mid north coast have been reported in NSW. The NSW Food Authority has been advised of an incident of ciguatera poisoning affecting three people after consuming a Spanish mackerel caught off the coast of Crowdy Head late in March, and a second recent incident that affected one person who consumed Spanish Mackerel caught off the coast at Crescent Head. In both cases, the fish consumed were caught by recreational fishermen. Similar outbreaks were reported twelve months ago on the mid north and far north NSW coast and the Gold Coast in Queensland. Often the poisoning leads to months of pain as food poisoning-like symptoms initially subside after several days but can leave a person with persistent nerve damage. The cigueterra toxins contained in certain fish are difficult to detect and can’t be destroyed by the cooking. Once considered a tropical illness, explorers described it as far back as 1606 and even in 1776, during the second voyage of James Cook. More than 1500 cases have been documented in Australia since 1965 and the number appears

to be rising. The toxins are produced by marine microalgae, particularly the gambierdiscus genus. As fish graze on the algae and are then eaten by other fish, toxins accumulate up the food chain to levels harmful to humans. University of Technology marine researcher, Dr Shauna Murray, claims that gambierdiscus has been detected as far south as Merimbula for the first time. “We never realised until now that they could survive in such cold conditions,” Dr Murray said. She said it’s difficult to tell for certain whether the Merimbula microalgae – which don’t contain the ciguatoxin – had been there all along or was a recent arrival. What is known, however, is that the East Australian Current is strengthening because of global warming, bringing warmer water and sub-tropical species into previously more temperate seas. These include Spanish Mackerel, the species of fish that led to the poisoning in NSW and most if not all of the 55 cases in Queensland so far this year – almost triple the tally of last year. Dr Murray says the Sydney Fish Market is among the most active markets in Australia in imposing limits on the sale of certain fish to reduce the likelihood of poisoning. Since 1999, it has barred the sale of Spanish Mackerel larger than 10 kilograms whole, or 8 kilograms gutted – limits often not known to many recreational fishers.

Grab a piece of Diesel

By LIZZIE McLEOD

AMERICAN-born, Aussie-raised rocker Diesel, is about to unleash his latest sound on Hastings locals. His current tour ‘Pieces of Americana’ has already received a great response from his first few shows. The tour is an introduction into Diesel’s upcoming ‘Americana’ album which will be released mid 2016. “The tour is going really good. I’ve only just tickled it really, just scratched the surface,” Diesel said in an exclusive interview for Your Local Independent.

“There are about twenty-nine shows and I’ve only just done four. It always goes very fast though.” Diesel says that playing at smaller venues, such as his upcoming gig at the Laurieton United Services Club, sets a more intimate vibe to his performances. “I really enjoy the intimate kind of thing as long as it’s not like so intimate that it kind of causes discomfort,” he says laughing. “You’re just not going to get that experience anywhere else. There are just not many places that you can get that sort of up close and personal. “I like that feeling, it makes me reminisce of performing to family and friends in the

Aussie-raised rocker Diesel lounge room as a kid or doing school recitals in classrooms and things like that. “You get to experience that feeling of humanity without having that feeling of ‘us’ and ‘them’. “Sometimes when you’re on big stages it’s kind of surreal, you go up there and you play there and then you come off and you drive away, leave the site, and you haven’t gotten anywhere near anybody. It’s just like ‘yep they’re all out there and I’m up here’.” Reaching his fans in the smaller regional areas of Australia has always been important to the musician. “People can easily write off the smaller areas and say ‘look at this town, it’s only got two streets’ and laugh it off,” explains Diesel. “I think it’s really ignorant to think like that. “People out there still are very much in touch even though they are away from the cities where everything is suppose to be immediate. I actually find that people in the country areas seem to be more switched on to what’s happening. At least with what I’m doing with social media, they really rely on it and use it.” Diesel enjoys touring and dropping in to the beautiful coastal towns of the mid north coast. “One of my very close friend’s family has been in Port for a very long time,” said Diesel. “Port Macquarie has been really good the few times that I’ve played solo just down at The Glasshouse a couple of times. It’s a beautiful theatre. I think it’s a good place to play these days. “A few people have chosen it as a place to relocate and I can understand. It’s easy to get to and it’s got some of the most amazing coastline.

It’s incredible. “I was actually telling my brother about it the other day because he is down in Florida and thinking of moving back and doesn’t want to move to the city and I said what about that part up there.” Diesel’s new album ‘Americana’ pays tribute to the artists that influenced him and stems from his American roots. “A younger me might have been a bit embarrassed to show my American roots as much,” said Diesel. “I guess that was the hangover from being at school being scrutinised. Any kind of thing that was different about you they would find the chink in the armour so to speak and school was a brutal battleground,” laughs Diesel. “It was pretty full on when I was young. “Musically I embraced Australian music only because I loved it and loved what I was hearing.” The inspiration behind his new album is personal and is a timeline of his musical life. “It’s kind of a scrap book of my musical memories and the songs that have really just made such a huge impact on me,” Diesel said. Expect nothing less than an exciting, mind blowing, and true Diesel performance on May 6 at Laurieton. “I don’t sit on a stool and strum away and pick away and get all introspective,” Diesel said. “As a solo artist I want to blow that preconception out of the water. “It’s basically a rock-n-roll show with one guy on the stage. It’s quite audience generated and there’s singing and clapping…we turn into the world’s biggest band basically.” See Diesel’s ‘Pieces of Americana’ tour at the Laurieton United Services Club, on Friday, May 6. footytips

Anzac Day influence in tipping WELL, lucky we ditched the Monday hoodoo last round. This week’s NRL fixtures include three Monday games! With Anzac Day falling on the Monday, the round starts on Friday night, but has a three-game bonanza on the Monday. For those who follow Your Local Independent’s (YLI) tips, we had a fair Round 7, scoring five from eight. Couple of facts to pick up from that round. The Sharkies are firming as genuine top four chances. Their annihilation of the Raiders, in Canberra, shows they will have to be considered in the tipping stakes, no matter who the opposition. Same can be said for the Eels. The Warriors? Well you can continue to toss a coin every time they play. OK, so let’s look at Round Eight, and remember to pay your respects on Monday! Broncos v Rabbitohs (Fri, April 22, 7.50pm, Suncorp Stadium, Brisbane): You can’t go past the Broncos. Early betting has the Rabbits out to $5 for this clash. The only concern in a derby like this is that the Broncos will put in belowpar performance at some stage over the next few weeks and Souths have the cattle to match any team. However go with the current form. • Your Local Independent tips: Broncos Bulldogs v Titans (Sat, April 23, 3pm, ANZ Stadium, Sydney): The Titans were without Greg Bird last weekend and were ordinary in their loss to the Dragons. The Bulldogs are also coming off a loss (to the Warriors). Have no doubt the Dogs, in Sydney, will be back on song. The Titans will be better and have the unique ability to bring opposition teams down to their level. If the Titans aim up this will be a slugfest. • Your Local Independent tips: Bulldogs

Southern Cross Group Stadium, Cronulla): Another tough one. Sharks deserve to be favourites. Panthers deserve to be higher on the ladder, however in their wet-weather win over the Tigers on Monday night they showed that while tough, they still need a lot more discipline in their play. • Your Local Independent tips: Sharks Knights v Sea Eagles (Monday, April 25, 2pm, Hunter Stadium, Newcastle): If there is one team that will lift because of Anzac Day, it is the Knights. They are at home, in the centre of a blue-collar kingdom. They are up against a team that still wears the ‘silvertail’ tag. Neither side is in great form. On form, and according to the bookies, Manly should win, but that’s not how the fairytale goes. • Your Local Independent tips: Knights Dragons v Roosters (Monday, April 25,

Raiders v Tigers (Sat, April 23, 5.30pm, GIO Stadium, Canberra): Toss the coin. Early betting has the Raiders (at home) as solid favourites. They were lacklustre last round, while the Tigers went down by a point to the Storm. The Tigers will continue to upset some teams, but maybe not this weekend. • Your Local Independent tips: Raiders Cowboys v Eels (Sat, April 23, 7.30pm, 1300 Smiles Stadium, Townsville): Interesting one. Cowboys lost to the Eels in Round 2 in Sydney. This time they are at home and will be out to prove a point. The Eels have already stamped their credentials for 2016. The Cows will be determined to prove to all that they are on the road to a premiership repeat and will have a target on the Eels. • Your Local Independent tips: Cowboys Sharks v Panthers (Sunday, April 24, 4pm,

ROUND 8 22nd – 25th April Friday 22nd April, 7.50pm, Suncorp Stadium Broncos vs Rabbitohs Saturday 23rd April, 3pm, ANZ Stadium Bulldogs vs Titans Saturday 23rd April, 5.30pm, GIO Stadium Raiders vs Wests Tigers Saturday 23rd April, 7.30pm, 1300 Smiles Stadium Cowboys vs Eels Sunday 24th April, 4pm, Southern Cross Group Stadium Sharks vs Panthers Monday 25th April, 2pm, Hunter Stadium Knights vs Sea Eagles Monday 25th April, 4pm, Allianz Stadium Dragons vs Roosters Monday 25th April, 7pm, AAMI Park Storm vs Warriors

Dr Sagnik Sengupta

4pm, Allianz Stadium, Sydney): Another one that you can find reasons to go either way. You get the impression that the young stars at the Roosters will put it together more often, as they did recently against the Rabbits. This should be a big occasion match. Against the Panthers, in the wet, ‘the Kids’ from the Roosters continually threw caution to the wind. Expect the same against the Dragons. • Your Local Independent tips: Roosters Storm v Warriors (Monday, April 25, 7pm, AAMI Park, Melbourne): Another Anzac Day influence here. Have no doubt that if the Anzac spirit sparks the Warriors, they could be unstoppable. Storm are disciplined, but are still below their best. Although they are at home they are vulnerable against a team like the Warriors, who continue to frustrate. Let’s go for the upset. • Your Local Independent tips: Warriors

Hillclimb heroes IT sounds like an ideal ‘boys’ bonding’ day out with the Kempsey Sporting Car Club conducting Round 3 of the Confederation of Australian Motor Sport (CAMS) NSW Hillclimb Championship at the Mount Cooperabung track this weekend (April 23 and 24). The current record holder at Mount Cooperabung, Doug Barry (LolaT8750 F3000), will have an enormous challenge to stave off twotime Australian Hillclimb champion, Malcolm Oastler. Oastler spent 20 years in Europe. First racing, he then worked as a designer before moving to Formula One. He then moved to Jaguar as chief engineer. Malcolm Oastler’s Dallara Formula 3 car has been fully reworked and repowered with a turbo Hayabusa bike engine. Local driver Darren Read is hoping to feature well in the results after coming sixth both days at the recent Bathurst rounds. A vast array of entries have been taken with vehicles ranging from road registered classes, sports’ sedans and clubman cars, not to mention six formula Libra cars. Another interesting car competing this year is the father-daughter team of Duncan and Kelly Handley running an electric car. The NSW Hillclimb Championship will be conducted over eight rounds this year. Rounds 1 and 2 were held at Bathurst’s famous Mount Panorama circuit. Round 4 will be held at Grafton’s Mountain View hill climb; Round 5 at Tamworth’s Oakburn Park Circuit; Round 6 is at the MG Car Club of Newcastle’s new track at Ringwood Park, Raymond Terrace; Round 7 is the Canberra Hillclimb, with the final round this year held at Huntley Hill Climb, Dapto, Wollongong. Competition commences Saturday with official practice starting at midday and finishing

Conditions perfect on the water

SUNDAY, April 10 saw conditions at sea absolutely perfect, little to no wind and only the slightest hint of a southerly current which made for some excellent fishing for the Port Macquarie Blue Water Fishing Club. Seven boats with 13 fishers on board fished from Cathie to the south to Big Hill to the north. The club’s barbecue and weigh-in commenced at 12 noon and was very well supported by members, families and friends. Fish that greeted the weigh-master included kingfish, pearl perch, snapper, Samson fish, morwong and the very tasty ocean sand flathead. The best boat on the day was ‘Easybeat’ skippered by Geoff Shelton with 48.86 points and the runner-up was ‘Gunna’ skippered by Jim Fischer. The award for the heaviest catch was won by Mark Hainsworth with 20.82 points, ironically the award for the best morwong was won by its sponsor, Ashley Roods, with a fish of .840kg and the prize for the best of other species was won by Jim Fischer with a pigfish weighing .400kg. The ‘most species’ award was won by Kevin Quilligan with three different species. As no juniors fished the junior award reverted to the best pearl perch for the day which was also won by Kevin Quilligan with a pearly weighing in at 1.20kg.
