Back to the future By BARBARA DYER
WHEN Port Macquarie MP Leslie Williams made her inaugural speech in 2011 it was a poignant look back at the past and her solid family foundations and a passionate embrace of what the political future held. Nearly seven years on the busy MP is still living the dream in what she describes as “God’s Country”. With the calendar about to turn to new year, Your Local Independent sat down with Leslie for a chat about her time as an MP and what the future holds. But first here is an edited excerpt from her very personal inaugural speech. “It is interesting when you look back on your past and particularly reflect on your childhood memories and the role they have played in shaping your life; you do not consider them unique. But when you share your life story and watch as others respond with looks of amazement, you tend to reconsider this view. “I was born on Kangaroo Island in South Australia. My father, John, was the local butcher
and my grandfather before him, as was my uncle and my cousin. “Not surprisingly, knitting sausages, preparing and packing minced beef and dressing a shop window are proudly skills that will always stay with me. “Dad worked long hours and changed careers many times during his life to meet the changing needs of his growing family. “As for my mother, there are no words to describe the pivotal role she has played in so many people’s lives. Her nurturing role extended much further than our household - for some 25 years she devoted many hours of service to our isolated community as a volunteer ambulance officer. “I grew up with two sisters and one brother, but that is the simple description of our family unit. The door of our home was always open - to friends, family and neighbours. “Some stayed for a cuppa, to catch up on news, to get some advice or to garner support; others stayed for years. • Continued Page 6

Let’s focus on beach safety ““
3
Your Local Independent runs the following letter in response to our Page 1 story last week. Please also see From The Heart on Page 4: My response would have been there are better ways of underlining the need for beach safety rather than rehashing an event from 15 years ago which, although time has passed, is a very painful memory to many of us in the local community. Highlighting the wonderful efforts of the lifesavers in our community, both professional and voluntary, with tips for spotting rips, swimming in patrolled areas etc would have been a better, more practical, reminder for the need for caution on our beaches. If this had been done, much of the distress caused by the numerous inaccuracies in what read like an eye-witness account from a person
who was not present at the event and only faintly connected to our family could have been avoided. Particularly troubling was the statement presented as fact that my wife was on the sand when she realised the family friend was in trouble and scooped up our two-year-old and rushed into the water. In fact, Sue was actively supervising the other children while standing in the shallows holding Ally when she went to assist and had no chance to offload Ally. Our focus should remain on the heartbreaking loss of the eleven-year-old boy suffered by his family and on the loved ones connected to this
weekend’s awful tragedy at Flynns Beach, while continuing to respect these people’s privacy now and in the future. I sincerely hope they have the wonderful support from extended family and friends and their local community, especially the schools involved, that the two families in 2002 were so lucky to receive which helped us get through a very dark time.
“
Well done to Your Local Independent for highlighting beach safety in its most recent issue and to (the paper’s owner) Sandy Mackenzie for sharing her moving account of her family’s tragedy. My wife and youngest daughter were involved in the triple tragedy at Lighthouse Beach in 2002 that your front page concentrated on. While I concede such events do become public property and your intentions were good, I am disappointed no attempt was made to contact either family involved to gauge whether they were willing to have the event draw attention from the tragedy another family was confronting.

Inmates dig deep for kids By BARBARA DYER INMATES at the Mid North Coast Correctional Centre have put their hearts into a Christmas charity drive, donating breakfast packs and other food items, to hungry children. The donated goods were handed over to Dave Davis, CEO of #NoKidHungryAu at a ceremony outside the centre. #NoKidHungryAu gives care-packages to needy families and provides food to schools for breakfast clubs for children who are not fed breakfast at home. A spokeswoman for Corrective Services NSW said inmates at the facility outside Kempsey had requested the charity drive be repeated after its inaugural run at the centre last year. Chaplain James Deaton, who organised it with CSNSW officer Lisa Brown, said it had become an important event for the inmates. “They were jumping to give,” Mr Deaton said. “It really means a lot to them. “One inmate last year told me that he gave to the charity because he was one of those kids who went without food and he knows what it feels like. “For others there is a sense of guilt that their own kids are doing it tough without them to provide. “Donating food for this charity drive is a way of doing something good; to have some
Some of the items donated by inmates at the Mid North Coast Correctional Centre responsibility in giving back to society, whether or not it directly impacts their family.” Minister for Corrections David Elliott praised the staff and inmates for their contribution. “It is these sorts of volunteer programs that help remind offenders about the importance of community,” Mr Elliott said. “I hope it also helps the offenders realise that they can make a valuable contribution to society and it can assist in their path to rehabilitation.” An inmate who helped organise the drive said it was a positive experience for those involved. “This food drive really picked up our spirits,” he said. “Over Christmas lots of families struggle with expenses. “It feels good to give food to a child who’s
hungry over the holiday season.” Mr Deaton said that while the charity drive benefited the community it also had psychological benefits for the inmates. “To be able to show kindness is important for any human being, but especially in prison, where it can be seen as a weakness,” he said. Mid North Coast Correctional Centre is a high security prison but even those doing hard time found a soft spot for children with whom they could identify and purchased the grocery items using their own money through the inhouse buy-up scheme. The CSNSW spokeswoman said the scheme was based on a full cost-recovery model, making it cost neutral for the NSW taxpayer. The goods are packed by inmates in buy-

up business units across the state, X-rayed by corrective services officers and sent out to inmates in clear plastic bags. The goods on the buy-up list are nominated each year by Inmate Development Committees at each correctional centre with items reviewed for appropriateness and security. The inmates are limited to a maximum $100 weekly spend and donating a portion of their groceries to share with children is no small gesture. The most popular items on the buy-up list include noodles, tuna, rice, drinks and confectionary. The breakfast packs also included items such as popular breakfast cereals, milk and honey.

Keep Xmas travel safe
SAVING lives and reducing serious injuries on regional roads is everyone’s responsibility. It is up to governments at all levels to build and maintain better, safer roads and as drivers we need to accept responsibility by purchasing the safest car we can afford and driving in a manner which respects other road users. You are more likely to be killed or injured on regional roads than any others, and it is up to us to do everything we can to reduce road trauma over the holiday period. This Christmas if you are driving for work or
on holidays, please take care on our roads and drive at speeds which reflect the local conditions. Christmas is a time for celebrations and it is important to make arrangements to get home safely if you have been partying with friends. Don’t mix alcohol and driving. The decisions we make will impact on our families, friends and others members of the community. Drive safe and enjoy a Merry Christmas. Darren Chester Minister for Infrastructure and Transport
Action needed to improve river rating I WOULD like to raise the issue of the C-minus rating the Macleay River System has recently been awarded. I recently raised the issue with Kempsey Shire Council along with M Pavey our local MP . The responses from both are unacceptable. Ms Pavey replied to me by saying “ we have long established protocols and agreed processes to manage activities and operations on the river at both Local and State Govt levels”. Obviously considering the C- rating it is not enough. Considering that river systems north and
south of the Macleay have far better ratings than our river (As). I believe the KSC and M Pavey are not doing anywhere near enough to improve the river system. Perhaps the $2 million excess funds Kempsey Shire Council want to give the Kempsey Cinema operator should go to the upkeep of the river. Shame on them both. Glen Ravenscroft Temagog

at the same thing. Neither of us is lying, it’s just when we recount the story of our dad the truth for us (our truth) is a bit different. We have different memories of how it all went down, and our individual narrations reflect that. My point? Part of the story last week was an interview with, Vicki Moakes, a former neighbour of the Collins family at the time of their tragedy in 2002. Vicki was concerned and upset about the 11-year-old who was swept away last week, from the same beach as where the 2002 tragedy occurred. Vicki’s perspective and truth are what was published. Nothing more, nothing less. Wow! What a mixed bag of responses! Phone calls, emails and social media messages. Some people (about 5) simply need to wash their mouths out! Vile threats and comments are of no value to anyone! Most people complimented us on the story as a timely reminder of how vigilant we all need to be at the beach. I have spoken to Paul Collins who has taken the time to have his say in his letter on page 3 this week. Thank you, Paul, for your open and honest communications, and your understanding. I wish you and your family all the best for the future. For me as the owner/managing editor of YLI – it’s always going to be a fine line/rock and a hard place scenario, especially when it involves stories with tragic circumstances such as the recent drownings, historic drownings and the emotional upheaval it causes each time the wounds are re-opened. Please be safe out there this Christmas. No matter where you are or what you’re doing, take care, don’t take any unnecessary risks, travel safely and enjoy your time with your loved ones. You just don’t know how long you’ve got ... Merry Christmas!
THANK you to everybody involved in fighting the fires on North Shore, especially all of those firemen and women who persisted and gave up their time to get the fires under control and a special thumbs up to Nancy Bird and all the water bombers. Just amazing!
Thumbs Up TO Andrew, the new owner of South West Roxy is doing a great job carrying on with our local theatre. Good movies, good service and a bright and courteous manner. Always interested in customer feedback. It is a most pleasant cinema experience.

Thumbs Up TO the beautiful people at the Diagnostic Centre, Bridge Street for their care and compassion when my partner Audrey took ill at their rooms. They even took the time to drive us to the hospital. Thanks heaps!
TO the Port Macquarie-Hastings Council for not installing rubbish bins at field 3 of Wayne Richards Sport Fields. Partiers or picnickers may have used them for the food containers left scattered. Public minded citizens could also use them for the clean-up they do.

I CAN’T believe for the second week in a row there is a search on for another child - a 14-year-old Wauchope boy - swept out to sea by a rip at Flynn’s Beach, late on Saturday afternoon. Social media has been in an absolute frenzy since the news broke and some of the commentary and opinions being canvassed are at best, not helpful and at worst, misguided rumours and or opinions about what happened. People, can I remind you, it’s not a competition to see who is right about the chain of events. No matter what perspective you look at it from. It’s simply, tragic! Our thoughts and prayers to all family and friends touched by the loss of their loved one. These two recent tragedies have also stirred up a lot of emotions for those who knew and loved Susan Collins and her youngest daughter who unfortunately drowned near Watonga Rocks at Lighthouse beach in 2002. The YLI front page story ‘The tears return’ December 7, 2017 was written to help create more awareness about being vigilant while swimming in the ocean, basic beach safety issues that can render life changing results if not adhered to. Unfortunately, this is not the first time we have lost lives on these beaches, nor will it be the last. Sadly, as tragedies like this unfold, past tragedies are brought to the fore and comparisons are made as people work their way through to make sense of it all as they struggle with their dramatically sudden loss. It’s not pretty, I know, I’ve been there and more than once. What I’ve found interesting is, everybody that goes through these traumatic experiences, seems to come out with a different perspective. If you sat my brother and I down to go through the events from when my father went missing, I can tell you now it would be two completely different stories, even though we are talking about the same event! Thing is we process and deal with things completely differently – I see black, he sees white and we are both looking

“ Residents clean up ‘tip site’
Thursday 21 December, 2017
Everybody in the area would have been wondering who cleaned up the mess. Now I guess they will know.
By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC A GROUP of Port Macquarie residents have banded together to clean up their neighbourhood. The locals united when they became fed up with seeing garbage piling up at the Kemp Street Bushland Reserve. “My husband and I live not far from there and I’d driven past it several times and I hate rubbish. When I walk I pick up rubbish because it drives me insane,” said Clifton local Ronda. “I knew the lady across the road had contacted the council and nothing had been done, so my husband Peter and I decided to get it done ourselves. “There were lounges and garden chairs - it ended up being a lot bigger job than we thought. “We know the council is busy at this time of the year and we know they had it on their list to do it, but we just thought we’d get it done ourselves.” Ronda and Peter had begun cleaning up the rubbish that had been dumped on the reserve when another local stopped to help.
Above: The mess before the clean-up. Top right: Neighbours at work. “We started cleaning up and then Yanni saw us and came and helped,” Ronda said. “We then walked through the bush and to the gully and cleaned that up too because it was filled with rubbish. “When my husband took the ute-full of rubbish to the tip, they didn’t charge him, so it was a win for all of us.” Ronda said that one thoughtless person dumping rubbish often resulted in a bigger problem. “Unfortunately if people see a bit of rubbish
there, they think ‘yeah I’ll tip mine there too’,” she said. “But now it’s all clean and clear and it looks really nice so hopefully people won’t dump their rubbish on the reserve anymore. It’s a popular area. People walk their dogs there and plenty of school kids walk through there, so you don’t want it looking like a rubbish tip.” And the positive neighbourhood action is set to continue according to Yanni. “The other neighbours, in fact everybody in the area, were all so appreciative of what we did,”
said Yanni. “I didn’t know Peter and Ronda at all before this, We were just neighbours who got in there and did the job. I think it’s really lovely and it felt good.” Yanni says he has seen plenty of wildlife including kangaroos and koalas in the reserve, so it was important to keep the area clean. “It’s a nature reserve with wonderful animals and it’s sad that people just dump their garbage there,” explained Yanni. “Local Mayor Peta Pinson heard about our clean up and she’s meeting up with me to chat about the work we did. I’m going to talk to her about starting up a neighbourhood clean-up. She thinks it’s a great for the community and for people to get on board and clean up. “People were driving past it for three weeks and then last Friday Ronda and Peter acted on it and I just put on a pair of gloves and joined in. Everybody in the area would have been wondering who cleaned up the mess. Now I guess they will know.”

Family shaped local MP’s life • From Page 1 “They came to live with us so they could have a better start in life, get a better education, or just because they were in need of a place that provided love, care or stability. And while providing so much love to so many people, my parents have also provided 24-hour care for my brother, Phillip, who was born with cerebral palsy. “Forty years ago there were no respite houses or group homes, little financial support from the Government, and certainly no support networks for carers - we all grew up as carers and today I am a better person for it.” Leslie reflected on her struggle to win the seat for the Nationals, saying while not the first female to represent the Port Macquarie electorate in State parliament, she was probably the only one to have twice come second and then went out a third time before finally nailing that all-important first place. “I wear this as a badge of honour,’’ she said. “Standing three times meant I had the opportunity to show the community my personal qualities—persistence goes without saying, but combined with my strong connectivity with my local community, being genuine, loyal and with a steely determination, the voters of the Port Macquarie electorate had a clear understanding of the different choices presented to them. “With a background in teaching, nursing, small business and administration, and a myriad of volunteer roles, they knew I had the life experiences to be an effective representative aligned with their various issues. “I once read that you have two ears and one mouth, and that if you use them in that proportion you are on your way to being a successful politician. “There are many organisations and volunteers in our community who make tangible efforts to assist those who need resources and advice to improve their lives— often when their lives are in crisis. “These community groups bear such a burden in trying to help others and they do it with limited resources. I will make it my
Leslie Williams with local surf club identities after a recent funding announcement. From left: Mick Lange, Lyn Smith, Leslie, Bill Amy, Tony O’Mara and Alex Stapleton responsibility to assist them in their humanitarian efforts so they can reach out further to assist others. “My mum and dad instilled in me a sense of helping others. I will build on that tradition. As a local member I am privileged to be able to work alongside dynamic and passionate groups of people who, like me, are prepared to contribute their energy and time to ensure a better future for our children and for their children.” Leslie Williams and husband Don have two children, Ben 28 and Meredie 25. 1. In your former life, you have been both a nurse and a teacher (she undertook her nursing studies relatively late in life while the couple had the Lake Cathie Post office). How did you make the mental switch from a caring and compassionate career to the thrust and parry of politics? Compassion goes a long way in politics. Politics has many facets and no two days are the same. Many constituents come to see me as a last resort. I am not usually the first person they come to. By the time I see them, they may be in a vulnerable position, whether their issue is business, personal or family. I think in my job there is still a strong nurturing and caring component if people are to be listened to and helped. It’s really about noting and noticing what people are saying, and working to find a solution. 2. You have also been a high school teacher which may see you dealing with immature adults. Are there parallels in politics and has
being a teacher given you skills to deal with ‘misbehaviour’ in politics? It is not necessarily about the skills I learned through teaching or nursing. I think I bring to the role my own life skills and life experiences. Being an MP is about being able to listen and to take in many different points of view. We’re in a conservative electorate but there is a range of different points of view. I represent all constituents – not just those who have voted for me. Having a brother with cerebral palsy has helped me fine tune those listening skills. 3. You have worked in SA, the NT and NSW. What took you to the Northern Territory? My husband Don worked for a bank and so it was when he was transferred that we moved to the Northern Territory. Three years later our son was born in Alice Springs and two years after that our daughter was born in Darwin. And they are both wonderful people. 4. Where are your children living these days? Both live in Perth now and I am happy to say they live in the same house which I think is really wonderful. Ben is a builder and did his carpentry apprenticeship locally in Port Macquarie. He has moved around quite a bit; went to Canada to work and was a fly in fly out to the mines in Western Australia. Meredie is a bit like me – she has had a lot of roles from interior design, to real estate; she has been a personal trainer and worked in hospitality. More importantly both my children are
wonderful human beings. 5. How do you balance your busy work schedule with your homelife? Actually although I am involved in various organisations it is often in a support role. I advise them through the grants and funding process and make them aware of resources available. I offer advocacy and they come to my office for support. 6. How do you relax? I live at Lake Cathie and enjoy walking – having two cavalier King Charles spaniels ensures regular walks. We go out to dine and enjoy the markets. To be honest, living in this part of the world makes work a pleasure and I would not say I have a lot of stress. Compared to MPs in the city for example, it could be so much worse. This is a really good gig. Part of my job takes me to Lord Howe Island and while it is a beautiful spot, it has complex issues relating to transport and the environment. But it’s a great community and it’s a great opportunity to work there. As for relaxing, it is important that we are all contactable but also necessary to find the balance. As I said, I don’t stress. Stress does not help. We just have to get the job done. I find work is a great motivator and quite simply, I enjoy being busy. (The second half of Barbara Dyer’s interview with Leslie Williams will appear in next week’s Your Local Independent)
FROM THE MAYOR A weekly conversation with Mayor Peta Pinson This will be my last weekly column for 2017, and I must say how much I’ve enjoyed keeping you up to date, and hearing your feedback on issues that are important to you. I look forward to continuing the conversation and keeping you in the loop during 2018. As many of us take a well-earned break and recharge the batteries, there’s no better time to reflect on how lucky we are to live in this wonderful place we call the Port Macquarie-Hastings. If you’re planning to travel, whether it is to enjoy this special time with family and friends or to take a family break, please take care, take your time, and drive to the conditions
so that everyone arrives at their destination safely. If you’re staying local, Christmas is a great time to get out and explore our own backyard. There’s so much to see and do, from taking in the wonderful hinterland, relaxing in our many great restaurants and cafés, exploring our regions art and cultural scene or experiencing our spectacular coastline there is certainly something for everyone. Visitors to our region often tell me how impressed they are, and often make comment that they did not realise how much we have to offer. I also hear many stories of families coming back for holidays year after year, and we are seeing more and more families choosing to call our region home. If you’re visiting us, welcome, we hope
pmhc.nsw.gov.au you enjoy your stay and you leave us with memories that will last forever. And just to let you know Council will be offering an additional yellow recycling bin pickup for two weeks, starting on Christmas day. It will certainly help with all the extra paper, cardboard packaging and bottle or two that we’ll accumulate. And remember our recycling catch-phrase ‘green and yellow first, so your red bin won’t burst’. I hope you and your families have a wonderful Christmas and happy New Year, stay safe, and I look forward to again sharing my thoughts with you in 2018. Until then, Peta.

Sections of the Hastings Public School pathway and sensory garden that are about to get a facelift
School’s in for volunteers By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC THE daily trek to and from the Hastings Public School in Port Macquarie will be more inviting for many in 2018, but more help is needed to complete the ‘Path to Completion’ project. “A couple of years ago we noticed parents were really having to negotiate a rather challenging rainforest path to get in and out of the school,” said P&C member and ‘Path to Completion’ coordinator Adam Rumble. “So I proposed a new path. It is to be a flat, level, safe, weather-resistant path, which is needed especially for mums with prams and children because there are stairs and bridges and muddy grounds, so the idea is to get this
nice, long, safe path for everyone.” The P&C also took on the project of a sensory garden, which involves an interactive play area and a space to relax for the students. “Most primary schools cater to the older children, with gyms and courts but not so much for the kindergarten-aged and the younger ones who sometimes just want to escape to a quieter area,” Adam explained. “So we built a sensory garden with lots of interactive things for the kids. This new path will link to the sensory garden, to the street, and also to the covered outdoor area. So this is the final stage of the project.” The P&C needs volunteers to come along on
the weekend of January 12, 13, and 14 to help with the path and a general working bee that will also be taking place in preparation for the school year. “We have a massive working bee going on,” said Adam. “We’re going to be doing mulching and weeding and a little bit of maintenance. It’s going to be a big effort getting the school ready for 2018, but we are really lucky here because it’s a very community-minded school. “We have to rely on the government for funds so the community steps in to help.” Adam says he needs as many hands as possible to get the job done. “I don’t expect everyone to come for the three
days, but I’d like to see at least 50 volunteers on the Saturday because that will be our main working day,” he said. “People are asked to bring shovels, wheelbarrows, and landscape metal rakes. “We have some really great sponsors on board who are providing services and discounts. The materials alone are at least $3,000 and with the labourers another $3,000 at least. Remondis Port Macquarie are providing a skip bin to take away all the vegetation.” If anyone wants to volunteer their services, contact Adam Rumble on 0448 920 152 or via email at pdavman@bigpond.com

North Coast grows as tourist destination CANBERRA CONNECTIONS With Dr David Gillespie Federal MP for Lyne
INTERNATIONAL tourists continue to flock to the North Coast in droves, each spending more $662 while they’re in town. Figures from the recent International Visitor Survey showed 344,000 international travellers experienced tourism sites and activities in the North Coast, spending $228-million in the year to September, 2017. More tourists are visiting the Hastings, Manning and Great Lakes and spending 16% more this year than last year – which contributes to our job creation and boosts the local economy. I’m pleased to see our region’s tourism attractions continue to be popular with overseas travellers. It shows regional marketing has had a breakthrough with international visitors, which is great for local tourism operators. Tourism Research Australia’s survey shows international visitors to our region grew by 27% and spending increased by 36% from the previous three years. Tourism is one of Australia’s main industries and is responsible for a large portion of the country’s economic growth, that’s why the Federal Coalition Government continues to invest in growing this key sector. The IVS also revealed spending by Chinese tourists has reached a new record in Australia - exceeding $10 billion for the first time. The record spending occurred during the China-Australia Year of Tourism, initiated by the Federal Coalition Government as we work to maximise the potential of China – Australia’s fastest growing and most valuable inbound tourism market - to create new Australian jobs. The International Visitor Survey is available on the Tourism Research Australia website: www.tra.gov.au
Save cash and environment RETURN and Earn: Port Macquarie is one of 200 locations across the state to have an overthe-counter collection point for the new container deposit scheme Return and Earn. When the scheme started on Friday, December 1, Matthews Metal Recycling at 5 Belah Road Port Macquarie was the first collection point to come on board so people can take the their container material for processing. Three new locations will start next week at the Hope Shops in Port Macquarie and Lake Cathie and the Honour Church, The Ruins Way at Lake Innes. A Reverse Vending Machine has also been announced for Port Macquarie which will be situated at Woolworths at Settlement City. People returning eligible containers at overthe-counter locations will be able to get a 10 cent cash refund while reverse vending machines will give people the option for an electronic transfer using PayPal, a cash refund or an in-store credit at a local retail partner and an option to donate it to selected charities. Almost 50 per cent of litter by volume is made up of beverage containers. Return and Earn will capture 43 per cent of this litter. It is the largest litter reduction initiative to be introduced in NSW. The scheme will help to reduce 160 million bottles that are littered in our environment every year. Like most new initiatives, there have been

some teething problems but I am confident these are being ironed out. I have already heard stories of young children picking up suitable bottles and cans to collect for some extra pocket money. The Cancer Council, St Vincent de Paul, Surf Life Saving NSW, and Planet Ark are the first four charities featured on reverse vending machines. Charities, community and sporting groups, schools and other not-for-profit organisations can also register their interest to become a donation partner under the rotation system. The map of collection points is available at www.returnandearn.org.au Merry Christmas: My staff and I would like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a safe and relaxing New Year. The Port Macquarie electorate office in Grant Street will be closed from 4pm this Friday, December 22, and will reopen at 9am on Monday January 8, 2018.
THE COWPER REPORT With Luke Hartsuyker
Federal Member for Cowper
I URGE local businesses to celebrate their success and the contribution of veterans in the workplace by nominating for the Prime Minister’s Veterans’ Employment Awards. Nominations for the inaugural Prime Minister’s Veterans’ Employment Awards close on December 22. Mr Hartsuyker said the awards had been established to celebrate the achievements of Australian organisations that were employing veterans and spouses of Australian Defence Force (ADF) members. The awards will also recognise veterans who are making a significant contribution to their workplace. During their service, ADF personnel gain skills and experience that are valuable in the modern workplace. There are many businesses on the Mid North Coast that employ veterans. I encourage them to nominate for the Prime Minister’s Veterans’ Employment Awards to help celebrate the men and women who serve in defence of our nation and to raise awareness about the contributions they can make in the workplace. The Awards are open to all organisations and are part of the Turnbull Government’s focus on improving employment opportunities for veterans.
Aussie slang too good to lose HAVE you ever had some friends who caused you to worry at times? I am not referring to those people who have medical conditions, but friends who caused you some embarrassment when you least expected it. I have met a few such people. They could be described as mad as a cut snake, not that I would tell them so to their faces. They might object. But I did discover that to describe a person as being as mad as a cut snake is to refer to an Australian expression. Overseas countries can’t hold a candle to Australians when it comes to slang, or what a person described to me as colloquialisms. Gerald Wilkes, who was at the University of Sydney at the time of writing his dictionary of colloquialisms, described a person who was considered mad as a cut snake as out of his mind, or at least extremely annoyed. In 1920 Louis Esson used mad as a cut snake to refer to “the boss” who apparently was not too happy at some stock escaping. William Hatfield used the expression in 1932 and Don Townshend in 1975. But plenty of others have used it. Bill Hornadge went much further in the range of slang or colloquialisms.
my
LAURIE BARBER
For instance, some expressions that can be traced to Australia: silly as a two-bob watch; mad as a meat axe; he’s so unlucky, if he bought a kangaroo it wouldn’t hop; if it was raining pea soup, he’s only have a fork; he has some palings off the fence; he’s a sandwich short of a picnic; he’s not the full quid; who’s robbing this coach; don’t come the raw prawn with me mate; he has straw coming out of his ears; he was as game as Ned Kelly. A lot of these come from Bill Hornadge’s book The Australian Slanguage. Bill Hornadge has many colloquialisms, going over several pages And has a supplementare glossary at the end. A counter jumper is a shop assistant, a barney is an argument, chew and spew is a cheap café, dinkie-die is the truth, dob in is to betray, hit the sack is to go to bed, gander is to peek, galah is a fool; ratbag is a person who acts foolishly, shaky

isles is New Zealand; tinny is a person who is unusually lucky; and a sickie is a day off work. Bill Hornadge quotes a US actor, Robert Easton, as saying: “I’ve heard John Newcombe describe a tennis match, and if I came close to imitating that I believe I could impersonate a wild duck singing Annie Laurie under water.” The late Sidney J Baker, in his defining book The Australian Language, said a Hyde Park bushman was a person who knew little about the bush or the outback. The Loo was Waterloo and The La was La Perouse. He also had several pages of colloquialisms. Broken Hill had several mentions, not all complimentary. The toast rack was a tram. Trams are about to be reintroduced in the eastern suburbs and elsewhere. The late Alan Peterson of Sydney Morning Herald fame referred in his book Words, Words, Words to vulgar words, which I do not need to repeat here. I have the impression that Australian slang is going out of use. I hope I am wrong. We have too much to lose. lauriebarber.com; lbword@midcoast.com.au.

Care, but you’re in control DOROTHEA Speedy from Port Macquarie has lived a worldly life raising children and running an Interior Design business across New Zealand, England and back to Australia. Now at the great age of 91, she manages to live in her home with assistance from the Home Nursing Group. Mrs Speedy receives regular personal care and household support. She needs assistance getting in and out of the shower safely due to a large step in the bathroom. Personal care can become difficult as we age, and especially if we are recovering from injury or illness. Our registered nurses, enrolled nurses and assistants-in-nursing are all highly experienced, fully trained and receive ongoing education. Mrs Speedy values the choice she has over her Home Nursing Group services and feels in control of her life. “Nobody is intrusive and all the staff are friendly and considerate,” she adds. NORTH Coast Local Land Services is looking for an enthusiastic and progressive person willing to make a difference to land management to join the local board. The North Coast Local Board currently has a vacancy for a local board member. Local Land Services Chair, Richard Bull said Ministerially-appointed local board members were not required to be landholders or Local Land Services ratepayers and it was an opportunity for interested people to play a role on the local board. “Local Land Services is a model that is well positioned, with boots on the ground, to deliver agricultural production advice, biosecurity, natural resource management, emergency management, sustainable land management and soil conservation services,” he said. “It’s an organisation established to make a difference to land management in NSW with an aim to improve primary production within healthy landscapes.” Mr Bull said the organisation was looking for people who can work as part of a team and bring different perspectives to local boards. “We want to ensure Local Land Services is equipped with the right mix of people to provide strategic direction, improve service delivery and work closely with our regional communities,” he said. “You may know a friend, colleague or customer that would make a great local board member – someone who can look beyond boundary fence lines and see the bigger picture.” “The way forward relies on the recruitment of the right people, to ensure independent representation, stronger governance and greater understanding of customer needs and regional service delivery.” A recruitment package is available on Local Land Services website. The closing date for applications is Tuesday, January 30, 2018.

There are a variety of art classes at the Creative Arts, Music, and Performance Camp
Holiday fun for kids By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC
THE fun-filled Creative Arts, Music, and Performance Camp is back. Bianca Bateman and Aimee Pelley are the coordinators of the camp and are welcoming students years 2 to 7 to join in on their favourite arts, drama, and music classes. “We’ve been running the camp under the umbrella of the Conservatorium Mid North Coast for three years now and we usually get about 30 kids a day,” said Bianca. “The activities change every time so it keeps it really exciting for the kids who come back each holidays. “I teach drama and I’ll be doing all different classes such as a film day, a play day, an improvisation day, and then Aimee will take the art classes and she has done some great activities such as painting, mosaic, she does art appreciation, painting with feet, tie dye, spray painting, nature art, and photography. “And then we always have a music tutor to come in and teach singing and music and we’ve even had ukulele classes. Recently we have also introduced dance, mostly hip-hop, but we did have a jazz class as well.” Bianca says the students don’t need any past experience in the arts and the camp is for anyone.
Plenty of new friendships are made at the camp “We are there to help the kids if they are struggling with something and we never force them to do anything. It’s mostly just about having fun,” explained Bianca. “The students really enjoy it and often times parents will book for one day and the child will enjoy it so much that they just do drop-ins for the next day and then the next day and they end up coming in for the whole week.”
There are already new parents calling in to book their kids in for the camp as well as the regulars, so get in quick to guarantee a spot. “The feedback has been so positive from past years,” Bianca said. “The kids love it and they want to go again. They make friends because they are put into small groups where they have to work together, and they bond. “We get mostly girls coming to the camp so we would really love to see some more boys coming these holidays.” The camp will finish off with a performance on the Friday afternoon at 3pm where the students will perform something they have learnt during the week, depending on what class they have that afternoon. The Camp runs from Monday, January 8, to Friday, January 12, from 9am to 3pm at the Conservatorium Mid North Coast Port Macquarie Campus (Old) Scout Hall. Parents can drop off their kids at 8.45am but must be there for pick up by 3pm. This camp is for children in years 2 to 7 and can attend all week, or any number and combination of days. Enquiries are welcome on 02 6583 9199 or via email to angela.johnson@cmnc.org.au For bookings and prices visit www. trybooking.com/TJNK

NATIONAL residential electricity prices will fall on average over the next two years from mid 2018 as more variable wind and solar generation comes online - offsetting this year’s price increase. But these gains won’t last without investment in replacement dispatchable capacity. Uncertainty is stopping investment and will put upward pressure on prices in the medium term. The AEMC’s annual report on price trends provides an overall picture of factors driving electricity prices for households in each state and territory. While the report is not a forecast of prices, it analyses cost trends across the electricity supply chain including generation, the regulated networks sector; and price impacts resulting from government environmental and system security policies. AEMC Chairman John Pierce said this year’s report shows wholesale electricity costs are now the single biggest driver of change in residential electricity bills – unlike earlier price trends reports which found network costs were the main driver. “Prices rose sharply this year by almost 11% on a national basis as consumers felt the impact of Hazelwood and Northern coal-fired plants retiring and the lack of replacement investment, combined with high gas prices,” Mr Pierce said. “But we expect these price rises will be reversed over the next two years as around 4,000 MW of RET-funded wind and solar generation enters the system.” This new generation will boost supply, resulting in downward pressure on prices. However, the report also found that over time, low wholesale prices contribute to the closure of coal-fired plants. Without new investment to replace these older generators, wholesale costs will start to increase again. “Without investment in replacement dispatchable capacity, wholesale prices will go up again and remain volatile. “And the rollercoaster will be repeated,” said Mr Pierce. To this end, the AEMC is working with other market bodies on the Energy Security Board on the national energy guarantee design. “We have a window right now for the COAG Energy Council to continue its work on mechanisms that can work in the long term interests of consumers and keep the lights on as the energy sector continues to restructure,” Mr Pierce added. The report also found that network costs, which make up around half of the residential electricity bill, are estimated to remain relatively flat across most states and territories. However, there is some uncertainty due to the current legal challenge of distribution network revenues in South Australia, the Australian Competition Tribunal’s decision that the AER remake the most recent revenue determination for the NSW and ACT distribution businesses, and ongoing processes related to Western Power’s access arrangement in Western Australia.

Tank keeps rolling on MACLEAY Valley community radio station Tank FM have purchased a new Audio Codec device which will enable the station to be more responsive when there is need for an outdoor broadcast. Tank FM Volunteer Ross Delaforce thanked the ETC Community Support Fund for a grant which had helped the station embrace the digital future. “Prior to this we were fairly active in doing outside broadcasts, but it took almost 8 weeks to plan, and get the event up on air. Also we were quite limited to where we could be broadcasting from,” Mr Delaforce said. “Whereas with this device, we’re more flexible and we can use mobile phone technology. This has taken away a lot of roadblocks for us.” Mr Delaforce said the team at Tank FM strived to participate in as much community engagement as possible and was often approached by local organisations for help in covering their events. “Now we can be more proactive in supporting them,” he said. The Tank FM team is also currently building a second studio to mirror image the existing one. “That will allow us to provide some training
for the local community. We want to open up the station and invite anyone who is interested in media studies, to come and learn the ropes. Also to collaborate with the local schools,” Mr Delaforce said. ETC Local Area Manager Shane Gill said it was a pleasure to be able to support Tank FM. “The ETC Community Support Fund is designed to help organisations reduce disadvantage, generate opportunity, increase support services and/or build capacity in the communities in which we operate,” Mr Gill said. “ETC is proud to be a not-for-profit company and we are confident the money we are donating will help make a more positive future for our community.” If your community event needs help spreading the word, or if you are interested in the media training, contact the Tank FM team on 02 6562 8883 or drop into the new station in Kempsey’s Elbow Street. ETC provides employment, training and business services in Kempsey. If you need help finding a job, are looking for staff or are interested in up-skilling, contact ETC on 1800 007 400 or visit www.etcltd.com.au.
UNLEASH your imagination these school holidays with the launch of the Summer Reading Club at Kempsey Shire libraries. The themed program aims to encourage a continued love of reading and ongoing multiliteracy skills development in children and young people over the summer holiday period. Summer Reading Club will launch at Kempsey, South West Rocks, Stuarts Point and Hat Head library branches on Monday, December 18 and is open to children from preschool to high school who are current members of the library. This year’s theme is ‘Game On’ and there will be weekly prize draws as well as a major draw
with two Samsung Galaxy tablets up for grabs. Team Leader of Library Services, Angie Meers, said Kempsey Shire Libraries run the program each year to encourage young people to continue reading. “It gives kids something fun to do over the summer holidays while helping them return to school in the New Year feeling more confident about reading,” she said. The Summer Reading Club will be held up until January 15 with the Summer Reading Club party to be held. The club is supported by FOLK (Friends of the Library Kempsey) who promote literacy programs in the Kempsey Shire.

Make healthy choices MID North Coast Local Health District (MNCLHD) is encouraging people to Make Healthy Normal this festive season, by being physically active and making healthier food choices during the Christmas and New Year period. MNCLHD Health Promotion Coordinator Trish Davis said on average, Australians gain 0.8 to 1.5kg over the Christmas period. “One to two kilograms might not sound like much but researchers have identified that weight gained over the holiday period is often kept on permanently,” Ms Davis said. MNCLHD’s Health Promotion team suggests the following ideas to help you avoid gaining weight over the holiday season: • Avoid going to a party hungry. Eat something light before the party to reduce your chances of snacking on high calorie party food. Healthy snacks may include a 200g tub of reduced fat yoghurt, a bowl of cereal or a cheese and tomato sandwich; • Watch your portion sizes. If you are inclined to finish everything in front of you, use an entrée sized plate instead of a dinner plate; • Fill up with foods from the five core food groups, including vegetables and legumes, fruit, grain foods, dairy and meat; • When hosting a party or celebration, choose healthy party foods to serve such as vegetable sticks, pretzels, rice crackers, hummus, beetroot, tzatziki or avocado dip, sushi, sandwiches, quiches and fruit salad with yoghurt. Exercise can be a great way to enjoy family time and avoid weight gain during the festive season. Try some of the following ideas to help you stay fit over the holidays: • Give active gifts as Christmas presents – a tennis racquet, boogie board, balls, flippers, a cricket set or a skipping rope are a few ideas; • Children love it when you play with them. Try outdoor cricket,
Health Promotion Coordinator Trish Davis is encouraging people to give active gifts this Christmas throwing a ball, blowing bubbles, bike riding or swimming; • Set yourself an exercise challenge for the New Year. Fun runs are great events to get involved in. Your local council website should provide details of sporting events held annually in your area; • If you are on a vacation,
walking is the best way to become familiar with your holiday location. It’s amazing what you can discover when you are on foot; • Use the facilities at camping grounds, motels or resorts. For example, hiring a tennis court is an inexpensive way to stay entertained for hours.
Roundabout to improve traffic CONSTRUCTION of a new roundabout at the Hastings River Drive/Newport Island Road intersection will commence in February, resulting in improved safety and traffic flow at this busy intersection. At the recent Port Macquarie-Hastings Council meeting, the $2.07million contract to construct the new roundabout was awarded to Ditchfield Contracting Pty Ltd, with construction due for completion in September 2018 (weather permitting). “An increasing number of vehicles are using Hastings River Drive to access local businesses and services, including travelling to and from the Airport and sporting facilities, and as a link to the Pacific Highway,” said Acting Director Andrew Doig. “With more than 18,000 vehicles passing through the intersection on a daily basis, it is becoming increasingly known as a traffic hotspot and the improvements are a high priority for our community.” The upgrade to the intersection will see a concrete roundabout constructed to improve
traffic flow and provide safer passage for vehicles exiting and entering Newport Island Road at Hastings River Drive. Pedestrian and cycling links will also be improved. Alistair Flower from neighbouring business Settlers Inn was enthusiastic about the opportunity the upgrade would provide to local businesses. “Settlers Inn is a popular destination for locals and visitors, and with traffic worsening we welcome the new roundabout,” Mr Flower said. This initial stage of construction will involve work to services including electricity, water and sewerage relocations. Some trees will also be removed during this stage. Traffic flow along Hastings River Drive will be maintained during construction with traffic reduced to one lane in each direction, however closure of Newport Island Rd at the intersection will be required to allow for safe and efficient construction.
Alternate access and detour routes will be signposted, and Council requests that motorists, cyclists and pedestrians take caution, follow the instructions of traffic controllers and allow extra travel time. “The new roundabout and related pedestrian and cycling access is a part of Council’s commitment to the broader upgrade of Hastings River Drive,” Mr Doig said. “This work follows the reconstruction of the section between Gordon and Aston St which was completed in June 2016, and future works including the duplication of the section between Hughes Place and Boundary Street, which is currently in the planning stages. “Council would like to thank businesses, residents and the broader community for their understanding and patience while these important works take place,” added Mr Doig. Further information is available at pmhc. nsw.gov.au/hastings-river-drive or by calling Council on 6581 8111.

Conditions test veterans, novices THE first reasonable north-easter this season on a race day showed that a number of more experienced members of the Port Macquarie Sailing Club were either out of practice or needing more boat maintenance and tested a lot of the newer members. The run out tide roughed the river up, and we ended up with only 5 boats finishing out of the fleet of 10 starters. The Catamaran division suffered the most. Frank O’Rourke on Dino sailed his usual flawless race to win on both yardstick and handicap ahead of Jack Corthals on Harpic who was second despite a capsize. Dave Winter on Spica was the first to retire due to the conditions, followed a short time later by Rob Barwick on Drift. Tony Kuhn on Stella was going well until forced to retire when a jib cleat ripped out. In the Monohull division, Paul Robertson
and Warren Sykes in Flembouyant handled the conditions easily to finish 1st on both yardstick and handicap. Terry Howard in Ratz was 2nd in both point scores, and Jane Cooper and Sharon Carney in Jupiter showed they are really starting to get their sailing skills up to get 3rd on yardstick and just missing 2nd on handicap by 1 second for a 3rd place there as well. Stuart Symons and Allan Pogonowski in Britannia retired with a lot of water in the front tank, and Steve Bohlsen and Scott Witchard in Splash Dance were forced out in spectacular fashion when their rudder broke while flying along under spinnaker. There will be no racing for the next 2 Sundays over Christmas and New Year, the next race being race 1 of the summer series on January 7 starting at 2pm.
Wauchope Men’s
to get their names down asap. Anyone wanting to be a manager, we still have 3 vacancies. A reminder that the handicap 3’s & 4’s start early Jan, still time to get a team together. Next super Sunday is New Year’s eve. Also with Saturday bowls Hibbards has donated all green fees to be added to the prize money. Australia Day will be big. Lots of prizemoney, only 28 teams allowed, details on the board.
FRIDAY night we had only around 50 for the WMBC Christmas / presentation night. It was a great evening and those that attended enjoyed a scrumptious meal. The big winner of the night, having won the Major Singles and Triples, was Peter Ostler who took out the Lance Rousell Memorial player of the year award after having also won in 2013. Speaking of triples, it was Steve Lathams 5th title in a row in that event. The much coveted Brian Thomas Memorial Most Improved award went to Ross Laurie after a stellar year since recovering from shoulder surgery. Kevin Pampling also gave a presentation on our new club shirt design which can now be viewed on the notice board. Wednesday we had 22 players turn out to contest the club select triples. The winners on the day with +19 were Don Murdoch, Rex Shrubb and Ted Scott, while the runners up were Alan Edwards and Len Pascoe with +18. Wednesday’s Twilights triples attracted 10 teams with the winners being Adam Hackney, Marty Loane and Sonny Hackney, while the runners up were T.Marchment, A.Magnoli and P.Johnson. Due to the number of regular Friday afternoon members attending the function on Friday evening, only 10 players took to the greens for the afternoon nominated pairs event. The winners were Col Parkes and Mal Agnew with +3. With one of the greens down, Sunday’s Jackpot Triples only saw 12 teams take to the rinks. The cash winners with +24 were Doug Donoavan, Ray Houghton and Lester Thurgate while the runners up were Don Murdoch, Peter McLeod and Ken Ansley with +20. The winning margins ranged from 1 to 24 shots but the jackpot number of 19 was not held by any sides and the prize will increase next month to $400. This week we have the usual Friday afternoon nominated pairs at 1pm, single entries will also be accepted. Wednesday’s afternoon single entry club select triples will only proceed if there are sufficient numbers, there are no twilights. We are still to finalize pennant numbers so if you are interested please register.
