Get bushfire ready By SUE PATERICK
THE bushfire message is simple – ‘Get ready’ That was the theme last weekend as local Rural Fire Brigades (RFS) are desperately prompting the community into action as another deadly bushfire season looms. Fourteen Rural Fire Brigades across the Lower North Coast region held a Get Ready Weekend so locals could receive information and advice about how to prepare for the bushfire season. Volunteer firefighters were available over the weekend to talk about the simple measures residents could do to reduce their bushfire risk. In its Bushfire Survival Plan the RFS says about 90 per cent of homes destroyed in a bushfire are lost because of burning embers, which can travel many kilometres so it is important to be prepared. According to Rob Wood, Senior Deputy Captain of the Dondingalong Rural Fire Brigade, things like doing a Bushfire Survival Plan, clearing and removing all debris and leaves from gutters, and trimming overhanging trees and shrubs around the home can help keep you safe. Other simple measures to make your home safer in a bushfire are mowing the grass and removing cuttings, moving any material away from your home that can burn, like door mats, wood piles, outdoor furniture, and leaves, and ensuring there is a reliable source of water. • Continued Page 3

Hey! Why not go fly a kite? We have deliberately put it at this “ time of year because we are almost guaranteed to get reasonably fine weather and some wind
“
By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC THE skies above Port Macquarie will be a little more spectacular this Sunday. Port Macquarie Lions will be holding their second annual Kite Festival at Lions Park above Town Beach. “Last year there was over 100 people who flew kites,” said John Fulton, Treasurer of the Port Macquarie Lions Club. “It’s quite a sight to see so many kites in the air at the same time. “It was a brilliant day for it and that’s what we want again this year.” The festival was started to encourage more locals to make use of Port Macquarie’s great parks. “We run it up at Goal Point, also known Lions Park,” said John. “The two local Lions clubs built and maintain that park and put a lot of effort into it and we like to see it used. “Initially the thought was, ‘How can we make some more appropriate use of the site?’ “A lot of tourists go up there for the lookout, but we wanted to make it a focus of an event as well.” Although the event will see many children decorating kites and shooting them into the air, kite flying is also for the young-at-heart. “People bring along their own kites and there are a couple of people that are really
into it,” John said. “We also have a kite flying demonstration in the morning from someone who is very good at it. It’s a great event for kids. It gets them outdoors and these days any activity that will get kids outdoors and enjoying themselves is something we like to see.” The Lions club members are positive it will be perfect weather for kite flying. “We have deliberately put it at this time of year because we are almost guaranteed to get reasonably fine weather and some wind,” said John. “If nothing else, the kids get to decorate their own kites, that in itself is its own activity.” Come and join in on the fun and fill the skies with colour at the Port Macquarie Lions Kite Festival on Sunday, September 24, at Lions Park above Town Beach. The kite decorating activity will kick off at 9am, followed by the Junior Kite Flying competition and judging of the best-decorated kite at 10am. At 10.30am there will be a kite flying demonstration and then the Open Kite Flying Competition will be underway from 11.30am. Kites will be on sale for just $10. This event is sponsored by Elders Real Estate Port Macquarie and APM Employment Services.

Port Macquarie Toastmasters Speech-Craft coordinator Michael Maybury, left, with Simon Mervyn-Jones
Learning how to ‘speak out’ By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC WHETHER it’s communicating to one person or one thousand, the Speech-Craft course can assist almost anyone. The Port Macquarie Toastmasters are hosting a ‘speaking in public’ Speech-Craft course through October and December. Simon Mervyn-Jones is just one student that has incorporated elements from this course into his everyday life. “What prompted me to take the SpeechCraft course was when I had to give some announcements in front of a group one time at work,” said Simon. “I realised I wasn’t comfortable with it so I joined the course. I had done public speaking before but it had been a
while, so it was great to get back into it.” The course covers many areas, such as impromptu speaking, speech preparation, how to stand while giving a speech, and much more. “Most people who do the course initially are a bit unsure of themselves, but then you see them develop over time,” explained Simon. “Sometimes people are a bit daunted by it all but Speech-Craft is a guaranteed change as long as you are willing to participate.” Simon has not only used the skills from the course in every day life, but has also gone onto winning speaking competitions. “I’ve used it in work situations. I had to do a speech at my daughter’s wedding, and it helped me improve my general confidence level with
other people,” Simon said. “This year I’m actually winning some competitions. I’ve won the Humorous Speech Competition and I’ve made it into the next round which is in Ballina.” The students will also get the opportunity to work with experienced Toastmasters. There are limited places left so get in quick. The course runs from October 19 until December 7 on every first and third Wednesday of the month from 7pm-9pm at the Tennyson Woods Centre, Lochinvar Place, Port Macquarie. The cost of the course is $150. For more information email mm.toastmasters123@gmail.com or call 0435 334 026.
PORT Macquarie-Hastings Council is keen to hear from as many community members as possible, to help develop the future vision and use of the Lake Cathie Foreshore. The foreshore is significant to the popular coastal township, and the next six months will feature a range of opportunities for the community to build on previous work and contribute to the development of a Master Plan. “Community participation in the planning process is vital to ensure that we can enhance and protect this popular community asset so it can be enjoyed for many generations to come,” said Director Matt Rogers. “A postcard was recently distributed to Lake Cathie locals asking them to share their thoughts for the foreshore, and to get involved in assisting in the development of the plan.” Council are also looking for community members who may be interested in being part of a ‘Community Think Tank Team’ to provide input during the development of the Master Plan. “If you haven’t had the chance to tell us what you think you can still visit Council’s website pmhc.nsw.gov.au/lake-cathie until Thursday September 21 to have your say,” Mr Rogers said. The input received from community feedback over the next few months will be presented and discussed at an upcoming Community Fun Day taking place on Sunday, October 22. Everyone is welcome. A key component of the Lake Cathie Foreshore Master Plan is to confirm strategies to protect the Foreshore Reserve, which has been subject to significant erosion over the past year. Council has progressed planning to address the immediate erosion issues, and a Crown Licence application has been lodged to gain access to the lake. This will allow for emergency dredging works to take place, providing temporary erosion relief. Approval on this application is expected within the next week and commencement of dredging will be subject to funding approval.

Make sure Port stroke capital you are Health data’s sickening message ready for bushfires By BARBARA DYER
PORT Macquarie tends to be associated with holidays and retirement. However alarming new findings marks the Lyne electorate at the top of the risk list for stroke. Despite the perception that life on the NSW coast is relaxed, the Stroke Foundation reports this is where the highest percentage per capita of strokes occur. Regional areas tend to fare worse than metropolitan. And there is expected to be little improvement over the next 30 years, with Lyne second on the list of the predicted top 20 electorates for stroke by 2050. This would be, however, an improvement on current figures which put Lyne top of the risk list for 2017, with 357 people per 100,000 suffering stroke, compared to metropolitan Maribyrnong in Victoria in 20th spot with only 262 strokes per 100,000 population. Lyne also has significantly more people in the population living with the effects of stroke, or having recovered from stroke – 2894 per 100,000 - as opposed to Maribyrnong, again in 20th spot, with 2144 per 100,000 people being stroke survivors. Currently, one person suffers stroke every nine minutes but this is expected to more than double by 2050, with one stroke every four minutes. The data released earlier this month during National Stroke Week indicates lifestyle and treatable medical conditions are the biggest culprits and again Lyne comes off badly. High blood pressure, atrial fibrillation (irregular heartbeat), high cholesterol and physical inactivity are all modifiable risk factors for stroke. Non-modifiable risk factors include age, gender and family history of stroke. Lyne sits at No.1 position of the top 15 electorates for high blood pressure; ditto for atrial fibrillation and again for high cholesterol, the impacts of which create a perfect storm for stroke in advancing years. However things improve slightly on the report card for physical activity, with Lyne in 4th position of the 15 least active electorates. As might be expected the top three spots filled by physically inactive people are taken by metropolitan electorates, possibly impacted by the number of people in sedentary occupations who drive cars to work. Stroke Foundation New South Wales State Manager Teresa Howarth said while the Port Macquarie region was Australia’s stroke hot spot, with the right treatment at the right time, many people were able to make a full recovery. “Stroke is always a medical emergency and
• From Page 1 With the bushfire seasonal outlook indicating above-average potential for fires in a large area of NSW due to a winter of below-average rainfall and above-average temperatures, the landscape is more susceptible to burning. For the Kempsey and Hastings LGAs the Bush Fire Danger Period (BFDP) is already upon us with these dry and windy conditions causing gasping trees to drop branches and leaves, the parched ground to peel and split and the grass to wither and die. Conditions are so bad the BFDP commenced on September 1, and all fire permits were suspended on Friday, September 8, because of a need to minimise any further unwanted fire activity in the local area. According to Lachlann Ison, Zone Manager for Lower North Coast NSW, the RFS has been exceptionally busy of late. “We’re still monitoring a few fires here locally, however nothing overly problematic at present,” Mr Ison said. “However, the risk of fire remains real across the entire state and NSW RFS members have been busy preparing by undertaking hazard reduction burns, maintaining firefighting equipment and undergoing training.” The Get Ready Weekend was seen as a chance for residents to do their bit to prepare and protect their family and property in the event of a fire. “Preparing for bush fires is easier than people may think,” Mr Ison said. “It could be as simple as talking to your family and having a plan for what you’ll do if a bush fire was to start nearby.” Get your Bush Fire Survival Plan at www. rfs.nsw.gov.au/resources/bush-fire-survival-plan and to monitor fires in your area go to www.rfs. nsw.gov.au/fire-information/fires-near-me
time is critical. Almost 1.9 million brain cells die each minute, so it is important to recognise the signs of a stroke and seek medical help as soon as possible,’’ Ms Howarth said. Port Macquarie Base Hospital Stroke Physician Dr Matthew Kinchington said people should all be aware of the FAST action plan. “FAST stands for Face, Arms, Speech and Time,” he said. “It is easy to remember and could save your own life or that of a loved one. “Ask yourself these questions if you are confronted with what you suspect may be

Toy library to close KEMPSEY Shire Library wishes to inform the community that the Kempsey Toy Library will no longer be operating from Friday, October 26. Team Leader of Library Services, Angie Meers, said the reason for the closure is due to a decline in the number of toy library items being borrowed. Ms Meers said staff have made a thorough assessment of the stock in the toy library and will be keeping high end educational and special needs resources for borrowing.

LETTER WEEK OF THE
All letters sent in must include your address and phone number and be under 350 words.
A heart-felt ‘thank you’ ON behalf of Cancer Council NSW, I would like to thank the Coffs Coast, Mid and Lower Mid North Coast communities for supporting someone they know affected by cancer by celebrating the 31st anniversary of Daffodil Day on Friday, August 25 this year. Across the Mid North Coast Local Health District region, it is predicted that approximately 1,824 people will be diagnosed with cancer in a single year. Cancer Council NSW is committed to reducing this burden and events such as Daffodil Day are vital to this effort. The annual community event fundraises for vital cancer research, support services and prevention and advocacy programs. This year funds raised by the Coffs Coast, Mid and Lower Mid North Coast communities will be invested into vital local services, such as providing transport to treatment and financial assistance for patients, their carers and families who have been affected by cancer. It was great to see so many of our wonderful supporters out on the streets encouraging people to buy pins and fresh daffodils to support all people across NSW affected by cancer. Every donation, no matter how big or small, helps Cancer Council NSW in our mission to beat cancer. As an organisation that is 96 per cent community funded, we simply couldn’t do this without the community and their support of events such as Daffodil Day.
Thank you once again to all local businesses, schools, volunteers and fundraisers for your ongoing support of Cancer Council and Daffodil Day. Abby Wallace Communications & Events Coordinator Cancer Council NSW Northern NSW

POLITICIANS who voted for the massively costly plebiscite should be charged with false pretences. They took an oath to govern and then don’t have the guts to make difficult laws. What will they do if that Korean maniac Kim Jong Eun drops missiles on Darwin, Brisbane or Sydney? Ask him to wait while the weak pollies hold a plebiscite to see if we should retaliate? They are voted in to make decisions for the people, so lets see some backbone. Wanted the job, got the job, now do the job! G Bray Port Macquarie

WOW! I certainly hit a nerve (or two) last week! Predictably, there were the regular knee-jerk reactionaries that were on the phone before they’d even finished reading the entire column. You can’t generalise and stereotype - how unfair, sexist and feminist - you’ve tarred all men with the same brush…blah, blah, blah! OMG read the whole column before you start throwing a tantrum. In fact, chances are the glass slipper (shoe I mentioned last week) would fit one or two of these Cinderellas perfectly. Lots of guys and girls who’ve experienced similar situations, in their relationships, at work, even from their neighbours, sent me messages to share their story and thank me for being so honest about mine. A surprising number of men feel they have no choice but to tolerate the sexual advances and innuendo from female colleagues or bosses and often feel pressured to have that quick shag to seal the deal. Most, like me, walked away from the deal or their job rather than trade in sex. To top it off, I was also informed by a gay friend of mine that gay guys are often hit on by Mr Straight guy at the end of the deal for a shag. Just like women. It’s almost expected and accepted, because it happens so often in corporate land! To say I’m gobsmacked is an understatement! I’ve spent most of the last week shaking my head listening to or reading these messages and have been blown away by human behaviour. It just astounds me how bad behaviour seems to be overlooked and some scenarios rewarded? I was out with friends on Friday night and copped a fine example of bad behaviour. I had been standing in the same place for at least 20 minutes, minding my own business, listening to the live music and I decided I was going home. I turned and kissed one friend goodbye and was about to do the same to another and suddenly,

Thumbs up TO the staff at Cafe Buzz in Peach Tree Walk, they are always so pleasant. Our ‘Girls’ Group have been going there for years on most Fridays. Vicki is always fantastic and Nathan caters to our every whin with his variety of delicious brews.
Thumbs Down TO the young man in a flash black car who blasted his horn and yelled ‘take your time lady’ as I crossed the narrow road opposite Hanks Optometrists, William Street. With a bad back and knee one can only walk so fast. I was almost at the medium strip so I certainly didn’t just step out in front of him. Such impatience. You’ll be like it one day.
Thumbs Up I WOULD like to give a big thumbs up to Hastings Home Services’ Ben and Ashley for doing such a great job putting up our fence. Such great work ethics. Great service.
this woman who I didn’t realise was behind me, launched into a verbal attack! Wow! I was not expecting that! I have no idea who she was. I know that she was trying to film the musician and as soon as I realised that, I apologised. But an apology was not enough for her and she was still carrying on when I was long gone. I know, because my friend told me. The most ridiculous thing about this whole situation? If the lady had bothered to ask me, I would have let her in front of me. She was at least 6 inches shorter than me and she could have happily filmed the whole night! Instead she got a sketchy video, of her own abuse and aggressive behaviour and I got an instant headache from restraining myself from decking her on the way out! Cheers for that! Speaking of headaches – it looks like PMHC may have just tried to bury what could become a massive headache for the community! As many of you will be aware, an 18-ton humpback whale has died and washed up on to Nobby’s Beach. This morning (Tuesday) I sauntered over to the Council offices as I’d heard a group of locals were going to be there to lodge their complaints as the whale was buried overnight on the beach. There are some very real issues that need to be tabled regarding this decision and it needs to happen ASAP! Hopefully the community will get the opportunity to voice their concerns at this week’s Council meeting and a resolution can be agreed upon. If not, we will pay the price. Seriously, can you begin to imagine how putrid 18 ton of rotting flesh is going to smell? I’m off to invest in some breathing apparatus, stat!
TO the greedy developers who are allowed to apply a ‘scorched earth’ policy on new estates wiping out every vestige of plant and wildlife. Shame on Council for having little or no environmental protection. It’s legal vandalism for a dollar project.
Thumbs Up TO the amazing staff of Percival Real Estate for going out of their way to rescue me, especially Michael, when I became stranded outside their premises when my scooter’s tyre wrote itself off. Inner tube replaced and fitted by Warren from TRS Cycle Centre. I am so grateful to each of them.

A close shave for charity
Riley scoops pool at Kendall awards
By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC
RILEY Skevington has taken out the 19th Kendall National Violin Competition. Four extremely talented young violinists performed at this year’s finale – 17-year-old Mitzi Gardener (NSW), 16-year-old Emmalina Huning (WA), 24-year-old Skevington (Vic) and 19-year-old Jonny van Gend (Qld). Skevington practically scooped the pool winning the first prize of a violin made from Australian timbers by Czech luthier Michal Prokop, the Joan Levy Memorial Award of $4,000, a Special Award for the winner (The family of the late Dr Peter Lee) $500, Audience Choice Award – $500 (Pentimento North Haven), - Best performance of Bach - $500 (Gillian Appleton) and the prize for Excellence in performance of the Sonata - $600 “In Memoriam Richard Pollett”. Emmalena Huning won the prize for the Best performance of an Australian work - $500 (Kendall Services & Citizens Club). The adjudicators for 2017 were Elizabeth Hollowell from New Zealand, Carl Pini from NSW and Charles Stegeman from the USA. All three adjudicators were delighted by the high standard of the competitors and the ambience of the Kendall School of Arts and its marvellous acoustics. The Kendall National Violin Competition (KNVC) is highly regarded both nationally and internationally. It is extraordinary that the small village of Kendall hosts the finals of this major competition each year. The semi-final round is held at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. The small committee of volunteers work tirelessly each year under the leadership of President and Artistic Director, Assoc. Professor Goetz Richter. Jeanell Carrigan always impresses the audience with her versatility and brilliance as the KNVC official accompanist. The Forestry Corporation of NSW has been the major sponsor of the competition since KNVCs very early days.
ONE local man is about to get his yearly haircut for charity. Stephen Douglas, pictured, started shaving his head for charity last year as a dare. This year he is continuing to raise money for his chosen charity, Riding for the Disabled. “My friends told me to try and raise a couple of hundred dollars for charity and I said: ‘No, I’ll do it properly,’ so I raised $1400,” said Mr Douglas. Riding for the Disabled Association of Australia is a voluntary, non-profit organisation, which provides opportunities for anyone with a disability to enjoy safe, healthy, stimulating, therapeutic, horse-related activities. Mr Douglas has lived in Wauchope for more than 10 years and has experienced the hardships of a disability himself. “I had one leg taken off at birth, and another one taken off a couple of years ago,” Mr Douglas said. “Riding for the Disabled is great for these kids and it’s not cheap to run. “It costs over $1600 a year just to keep a horse.” There will be donation containers placed around Wauchope and Port Macquarie leading up to the big shave – November 24. The donation points in Wauchope are at the Wauchope Newsagency, the Wauchope Pharmacy, Monaghan Fuel Supplies, Bugden and Partners accountants, Wauchope Barber Shop, and the Colonial Bakehouse. Donation points in Port Macquarie are the Wiggly Tail Pork Shop and Butchers at the Grower’s Market, Finnian’s Irish Tavern, and East Port Veterinary Hospital. Come and see Stephen shave his head for charity on Friday, November 24, from 6.15pm at the Wauchope RSL Club. Riding for the Disabled hold horse riding sessions every Tuesday morning at the Wauchope Showground.
Getting to know ‘our’ bees
By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC
THEY could be our savior, but Aussies know very little about our own native bees. However that is changing – locally anyway. The hundreds of native bees that are buzzing around backyards and pollenating flowers in the mid north coast are not the typical black and yellow striped ‘bumblebees’. Patrick McEntee will be coordinating a Native Stingless Bee Course in Wauchope to fill in all the gaps about our local bees. “The native bee is fairly common and you’ll often see it in your back garden if you’ve got a good array of flowers,” says McEntee, Coordinator of the Native Stingless Bee Course. “They are tiny, smaller than a fly-sized bee. “They don’t sting either so people aren’t afraid of them or have to be aware that there is a bee out there that will sting you and possibly kill you.” These tiny little bees however might just save the planet one day. “One of its benefits in the long term is that the native bee doesn’t fall victim to the various problems that European bees are starting to face now,” explained McEntee. “There are a number of different diseases that bees can get such as varroa mite which if it gets into Australia, has the potential to decimate the European bee population. “If this happens we will be reliant on the native bee to pollenate our crops and our flowers and produce our seeds.” The native bees produce a very strong flavoured honey, although it’s very rare to find in stores unlike the sweet European honey that is produced by many local bee-keepers. “There are a few beekeepers in the area that keep native bees,” said McEntee. “I am hoping with this workshop that we get a lot of people
Pictured left and below: The Australian native bee.
who do keep native bees and we will set up a bit of a data base so we can keep communicating about the management of native bees.” The course will cover bee nesting biology, bee forage biology, importance of bees in natural systems, traditional stingless bee-keeping around the world, modern stingless bee-keeping in
Australia, using stingless bees for pollination of gardens, sugarbag honey and its properties, and rescuing bees threatened in the wild. “They’ll be talking about how to make a hive. It’s a different structure to the European bees, and how to split the hive to make more colonies,” McEntee said. “We are encouraging more people
to have native bees in their backyard.” Keep bees for fun, honey production, conservation, pollination, and education. Join in the fun at the Native Stingless Bee Course on Thursday October 26 from 10am4pm in Wauchope. The course is presented by two of Australia’s leading experts on native bee management and behaviour. Dr Tim Heard, long-term Stingless Bee-keeper and Dr Tobias Smith, Native Bee Researcher. The course is restricted to 40 people at a cost of $40 each. Bookings can be made through Patrick McEntee, patrickmcentee18@gmail.com (preferrable) or 0400 483305.

Kempsey Show a weekend record By SUE PATERICK THIS year’s Kempsey Show was a time for families, friends and fun with huge crowds attending the weekend event under clear spring skies of sapphire blue. Vice President of the Kempsey Show Society, Christopher Anderson, said there was a more substantial crowd than in recent times because the show was held on a weekend. “A lot of people told me it was great to hold the show on a weekend instead of through the week because the whole family could come and be together,” he said. “Plus they thought the weather was better in spring than in winter when the show was previously held.” The emphasis for this year’s show centred on youth and some ‘old skills’ like wood chopping and camp drafting. Chris said both events were very wellreceived, especially the race between a chainsaw and a cross saw. According to Chris, there were record entries in the school division of the beef cattle events with entrants from Port Macquarie and Bellingen schools joining in. “The crowd was four deep around the ring for the cattle events and I have never seen so many people in 10 years,” Chris said. There were record entries in the horse events in the show ring too and Chris attributes the high number of entries to the show being held on a weekend, which gave people coming from other areas a chance to attend. There were record numbers in the Miss Showgirl competition too with Miranda Kyle winning the top honour. She will become the Macleay Valley’s ambassador and will then try out for the zone competition and hopefully the Royal Easter Show in 2018. Amber Alsford came second in the Miss Showgirl competition, Courtney Pietsch won the Co-ordinator Award and the youngest entrant in the senior division, Katie Barnett won the Encouragement Award. Co-ordinator of the Miss Showgirl event, Jo Cavanagh, said she was blown away by the lovely girls and their capabilities. “They are a fine example of what we’ve produced here in the Macleay Valley,” she said. “And I hope local businesses and committees call on Miranda when they have an event to open because she is such a good representative for our youth.” Young Katie proved she was more than a pretty face when she won a place in one of the cattle events and organised a team for the Young Farmers’ Challenge.

Right, top: Isabell Lober from Rollands Plains loves everything about chickens. Her prize-winning Belgian Bantum, Sasha - a pullet under 12 months - took out the Reserve Champion of Show. This new event was another of the show’s success stories with teams of four representing local schools. The Kempsey High Troopers won the event and will now qualify for next year’s Royal Easter Show. St Paul’s High School took out second prize. Chris thinks numbers were up in most events, and said the poultry exhibit was full and the floral displays were fabulous because it was spring. The fireworks on the Saturday night were a standout as was the bike riding display from
Aussie FMX freestyle motocross and the Demolition Derby. All in all this year’s Kempsey Show was an outstanding success. Chris thanked all the volunteers and the Show committee for all their hard work and tireless efforts. “There’s a lot of grey hair on the committee so we need more green shoots and hope a lot more young people volunteer to help out at next year’s Kempsey Show,” he said.

Plane crash increases concern By SUE PATERICK
A FINAL report into the plane crash of Diamond DA40 aircraft shortly after take-off from Port Macquarie Airport on Friday September 8 won’t be released to the public until May, 2018. According to a spokesperson from the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB), three Transport Safety Investigators with expertise in flight operations, aircraft maintenance and aircraft systems have completed their on-site investigation of the accident and were now examining evidence gathered from the site. “It is too early in the investigation process for the ATSB to release any preliminary findings in relation to the accident,” the spokesperson said. “The ATSB anticipates a final report will be completed and made public on the ATSB’s website in May, 2018.” The Australian International Aviation College (AIAC) plane was on a night training flight when it crashed in dense swamp land at about 8.30pm. A 25-year-old trainee pilot and a 25-year-old instructor both sustained serious injuries in the crash. The AIAC Head of Flight Operations, Kevin McMurtrie, was unavailable for comment. The plane crash has heightened the worry of local Kempsey residents about the safety of training flights over populated areas, given the AIAC’s controversial plans to increase its training flights in the Macleay to 28,000 in 2018, 365 days a year from 6am to midnight. Schools, preschools, a hospital, nursing homes, family homes, businesses and farmland are under the AIAC flight paths. While the Save Kempsey Airport Action Group (SKAAG) have been fighting the AIAC’s Development application (DA) to dramatically increase its training flights, the group has sent its best wishes to both pilots involved in the accident and their families and colleagues. SKAAG Chairperson, Adam Ulrick, said the
The entrance to Kempsey Airport group hoped the pilots had a full and speedy recovery from their injuries. “No one wants to see this kind of thing happen,” he said. “Our group understands the need to wait for the outcome of Australian Transport Safety Bureau’s investigation into the cause of this accident, but we have argued since day one that the enormous increase in risk to homes and residents within the highly-populated areas around Kempsey, Aldavilla, Euroka, Dondingalong, Yarravel and Greenhill is unacceptable.” At a public meeting that attracted hundreds of disgruntled residents back in March this year, the Northern Joint Regional Planning Panel (NJRPP) - the consent authority for the AIAC DA - moved to defer the proposed airport expansion swayed by many issues the community had raised.
These issues included the sheer number of planes proposed, safety of local residents, claims of a lack of transparency and community consultation from Kempsey Shire Council (KSC), the noise assessment, claims of incomplete and inaccurate economic data, and the impact on the peaceful good life people have built in the Macleay Valley. Pollution from aviation fuel in drinking and irrigation water and soil were also concerns, as were health issues, social ramifications, traffic safety and the possibility of dropping real estate values. “The DA should have been rejected at the outset and this crash of the same model aircraft currently in use at Kempsey highlights the risks to our community,” Mr Ulrick said. According to a spokesperson for KSC,
the Council has been in touch with AIAC representatives to express its sympathy and well wishes for those affected. “The accident is the subject of an Australian Transport Safety Bureau investigation and Council will not be speculating on any effects, outcomes or causes of the accident,” the spokesperson said. While SKAAG understood the ATSB’s investigations had to be completed first, Mr Ulrick reiterated the group’s claim that the risk to people’s wellbeing was real. “The DA or any other expansion proposal from AIAC’s operations at Kempsey Airport must not be allowed to proceed,” he said. Since the NJRPP meeting in March, KSC has held a series of well-attended community workshops and a comprehensive report of all the feedback was submitted to Council’s August meeting. A report was adopted at that meeting that outlined the next stages in developing a Fly Neighbourly Agreement (FNA) - a recommended operational tool for an airport the size of Kempsey. One of the components of Council’s role in developing the FNA is to engage independent experts to prepare a Noise Management Plan, which will commence in coming months. This noise assessment is not the same as any noise assessment conducted in July by the AIAC for the purpose of the DA. Community engagement will be an important part of the process and expressions of interest to be part of an ongoing Community Reference Group involving community, Council and Kempsey Airport users closed last Friday. Further community engagement will occur through the drafting and exhibiting of the FNA and Noise Management Plan.

Wauchope back on a learning curve COMMUNITY college activity in Wauchope had been in a bit of a lull over the past couple of years, but that’s all about to change. A new series of learning programs will be running ‘all over town’. Do you know a young person or a jobseeker who loves coffee and cooking? Timbertown’s ‘Maul and Wedge’ will host a special Hospitality and Café Skills program for young people who’ve finished school and would like to gain skills for work while having loads of fun! For people with intellectual disability there will be the LifeSkills Express program running in the mornings at Wauchope Library on Storytelling, and at the Uniting Church Hall in the afternoons, on Communication Skills. This program helps participants to deliver vital life and independent living skills with a focus on building literacy. The CWA Hall will host First Aid courses for jobseekers, those needing to keep updated for work or anyone wanting to be prepared to assist in an emergency. There will be Housekeeping skills and on-the-job training for accredited units of competency at the Wauchope Resort and Motel for job seekers just in time for the high tourist season. Wauchope Country Club will host RSA, RCG and a Bar Skills courses in the coming months. There will be funding available for eligible participants so call the college to find out more. Of course, we have programs running across the Port Macquarie – Hastings area with a focus on young people leaving school at this time of year, so if young people are coming to the end of the school year and are thinking about work over the holidays, they should contact us. We are looking forward to renewing our acquaintance with the Wauchope community . To find out about our programs, please ring 6583 7288 for details, or visit our website on www.portace.com.au to see the full range.
Package is a jobs booster THE Federal Coalition Government continues to underline its commitment to diversifying local economies, stimulating sustained growth and boosting job creation on the NSW North Coast through the $25 million Regional Jobs and Investment Package. Eligible businesses across the region will receive grants of at least $50,000 to assist in building local infrastructure, helping innovate to remain competitive in new and growing markets, as well training and upskilling the regional workforce to take advantage of emerging opportunities and withstand changes in the job market. Regional communities across the region will also receive additional investment through the latest round of the Coalition’s Stronger Communities Program. With grants of up to $20,000 for small capital projects, we’re hoping to provide that fresh lick of paint for the local sports clubhouse, an upgraded play area at a childcare facility or fund the urgent purchase of equipment for the local surf lifesaving club ahead of the upcoming summer. Our ongoing commitment to delivering important infrastructure for the region is also continuing with the rollout of the $60 million

Mobile Black Spot program. Currently the projects are subject to a tender process with mobile network operators offered the opportunity to access the funding to build the new towers. The tender process will be finalised by the end of this year. These towers are one of my priorities for funding and will bring a much-needed boost to mobile coverage, providing benefits to emergency service operators, businesses, residents and motorists using the Oxley Highway and the route through Paterson and Gresford on the way to Barrington Tops. Finally, I’d like to extend my great thanks to all of you who have turned out in force at my regular listening posts conducted throughout the electorate. The events are a great opportunity to answer questions, take up any queries or concerns you may have, and provide you with an update.

WITH the recent High Court decision to allow the same-sex marriage postal survey to proceed, it’s now time for everyone to consider where they stand on the issue. My hope is that on the Mid North Coast over 121,000 surveys are completed and returned. Whatever your views are on this issue, it’s a very personal decision. The survey will give everyone a voice so the final outcome truly represents the Australian community. While the process is taking place, I urge everyone to be respectful of both sides of the debate. It is true that the survey is not compulsory and that has generated some criticism. The Government’s preference was always to have a compulsory attendance plebiscite — much like what occurs with general elections — however the Senate voted against this option. The Coalition Government committed to the Australian people to take this issue to them and that’s what we are doing with the postal survey. The survey is currently being posted out and should be arriving in your mailbox soon. The final deadline to return your survey is 6pm on November 7, 2017.
What’s behind a drubbing?
A woman sent me a note a few weeks ago. I sometimes get excited when a person of the opposite sex hands me a note. It reminds me of my days at primary school. But when I get a note from a woman these days it contains something very mundane, such as ‘what does this word mean?’ The note asked me about drubbing. This woman came from a newspaper. When I get a note from a newspaper person asking about drubbing, I feel pleased that I have retired. Why would a newspaper person talk about drubbing? My next thought was that some poor journalist was in for some corrective therapy. Drubbing in general terms represents a beating, or punishment, but its origins seem to be in doubt. The first use, in print, of the word that I could find was in 1634, when Sir Thomas Herbert, using the spelling of the day, commented “he confest and was drubd right handsomely”. The word seems to have come into English from Sir Thomas’s travels in the Orient. It was related to the bastinado, which was a form of torture which related to the caning of feet. I haven’t been caned on the feet, but I could hardly imagine that as torture. I thought it would tickle. It probably depends on who does the caning.

Sir Thomas Herbert (1606–1682), was an English traveller, historian and a gentleman of the bedchamber of King Charles I while Charles I was in the custody of parliament (from 1647 until the king’s execution in January 1649). It was possible that the word came from the Barbary states, in north Africa, where many Christians suffered. Owen Barfield, writing in History in English Words, said drubbing was thought to be an Arabic word brought back by suffering Christians from the Barbary states. But opinions about the origin of the word differ. The Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue, published in 1811, said to drub was to beat with a stick or rope’s end. Again Sir Thomas Herbert said the petitioner was almost drubd to death. I think he was referring to a different person there, but drubbed certainly had a good workout in those days.
Samuel Pepys in his diary said “he would have got seaman to have drubbed them”. I don’t know whether ‘they’ died. Under drubbing, the big dictionary is precise, a little too precise for some tender readers. It says James Howell in 1640 said the Turks had all sorts of punishment, including drubbing, guunshing (I don’t know what that means, but I’m sure it represented some form of torture), flaying alive and impaling. Maybe the drubbing was the warm-up act. But drubbing did not always result in death. Samuel Butler writing in Hudibras commented on “the blows and drubs I have received”. A person who hands out the drubbing is called a drubman. Now, I will have to ask why that newspaper person wanted to know. Actually, to be fair, she mentioned a sports commentator in her question. Can you imagine the scene: Queensland gave NSW a drubbing in the State of Origin Rugby League match. No, it will never happen. Has anybody else noticed that in many television advertisements involving a car the car seems to be driven on the right-hand side of the road? Are the advertisements imported from the United State or does somebody just employ bad drivers? lauriebarber.com; lbword@midcoast.com.au

Spring into Comboyne By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC SPRING is definitely in the air at Comboyne. This weekend Comboyne’s locals will be welcoming thousands of people to their annual Spring Spectacular. The event which has been running since 1990 showcases the town’s very beautiful and very popular Spring Flower Display, the Car Club Capers Rally, Comboyne’s avocado growers, woodwork displays and demos and plenty more to keep the family busy. “The annual spring event started in 1990 and was brought about when the Comboyne War Memorial Hall, that was built in 1922, was handed back to the community committee to rebuild as it was in a fairly derelict state,” explains Ray Lance, Publicity Officer and Car Club Capers organiser for Spring Spectacular. “We had the community get involved in raising money and we re-did the whole thing. “Today the War Memorial Hall is the biggest building in Comboyne besides the cheese factory.” And it’s that community mindset and hard work that makes events like the Spring Spectacular so popular. “People just love our shows,” said Ray. “When people visit they tend to come back because it’s a beautiful mountain plateau and in Spring everything is green and shooting. “We are friendly people and there is a great atmosphere - country barbecues and nice homemade food and homemade lemonade, the best in the whole world actually. The last time we made lemonade we sold more than 700 cups.” Avocados will be a big hit this year and visitors will get the opportunity to talk with local farmers and try their produce. “There are about 50,000 avocado trees planted up here now and so we’ve given them a spot in the biggest marquee on the showground. The

avocado growers will offer samples of avocado smoothies, dips, and will have avocados for sale,” said Ray. The proceeds from the event will go towards the A&H association showground committee who will put the money towards fixing the showground’s water systems, the billabong, the fence, and general maintenance of the grounds. Some of the proceeds will also go towards the Westpac Rescue Helicopter service. “They have been very helpful for us,” Ray said. “We’ve had emergencies up here where people have needed airlifting out. One for example was a football incident. It’s a long way from Comboyne to emergency, so if it’s urgent they are called on.” A show at Comboyne wouldn’t be possible without the help of the showground committee and their great work ethic. “There’s a whole lot of people who do amazing work for the show like Vicky Fisher and Rod Fisher,” said Ray. “Rod is the president

of the A&H showground association and he has always got the best interest at heart and the hardest working guy I know. “There’s a small number of people who do a lot of work, but that’s what we are, a small community.” The Comboyne Spring Spectacular will also be hosting a competition in the arts pavilion for ages 5-15 with the younger entrants completing a colouring-in competition and the older entrants designing a poster for next year’s event. There will be many prizes to be won in the Car Club Capers and fashion competition along with over $2,000 in prizes to be won in the ‘Spectacular Raffle’. Stella first in series event THE Port Macquarie Sailing Club held their 3rd race of the spring series in a lightish southerly, starting in the last of the run-out tide, and finishing in the start of the run-in tide. Tony Kuhn on Stella was first on yardstick by 37 seconds ahead of Jack Corthals on Harpic in the catamarans, and Rob Barwick on Drift was third. On handicap, however, Harpic was 2 seconds ahead of Stella, with Drift again third. Paul Robertson and Martina Holt in Flembouyant showed that 2 excellent lightweight sailors in conditions that suited them perfectly could easily blitz the field by taking the monohull yardstick win by over 20 minutes ahead of learner skipper Sharon Carney with Jeff Walsh in Big Bang. The smaller boats, Stuart Symons and
Taylor McMurtrie in Jupiter, and Cameron Marshall and Caleb Bohlsen in Lowboys 2 only did 2 laps of the course and their times were multiplied out to give a 3 lap time. Jupiter was third on yardstick using this method, and Lowboys 2 was fourth, an hour longer than Flembouyant. With this being only the 3rd race, and the first race in which handicaps could be calculated, the handicapper had to make some assumptions to get results. This made the handicap results Flembouyant first, Big Bang second, Jupiter third, and Lowboys 2 fourth. Next Sunday is race 4 of the Spring Series with a handicap start starting at 1pm. No one is rostered on duty at this stage.

Sport funds boost
Member for Port Macquarie, Leslie Williams
LOCAL sports clubs are being invited to apply for grants of up to $20,000 with Member for Port Macquarie, Leslie Williams saying the focus this year is encouraging more talented girls and young women into sport programs. “Around half of all Australian boys are active through a sports club during their childhood compared with just 33 per cent of girls and the participation rate for girls drops sharply after girls turn 12,” Mrs Williams said. “I encourage all local clubs and sporting organisations to use this opportunity to boost their female programs and events. We want to see girls not only take to the field, but stay on the field. “Thousands of local clubs across the state are now eligible to apply for funding under the NSW Government’s Local Sport Grant Program. “The grants will cover initiatives such as new sport programs, upgrades to facilities or projects that improve participation in sport,” Mrs Williams said.
Minister for Sport, Stuart Ayres said the program is part of a $10 million sport grants package announced by the NSW Government. “Women’s sport is the fastest growing area of many codes and we are now seeing more big name sponsors and media networks recognising the public’s appetite for prime time viewing, but more needs to be done, including cultivating participation at a grass roots level,” Mr Ayres said “From the bush to the city, sport is the lifeblood that unites communities. “This is not just about female programs though, I encourage all sporting groups to apply for grants that will help people of all ages and abilities get involved in their local club or become more active.” Grants are now open until October 6, 2017. For more information visit sportandrecreation. nsw.gov.au/clubs/grants or phone 13 13 02.

Why the Cowboys aren’t done
Cowboys’ Michael Morgan
RUGBY league games are won between the ears. That old mantra came home to roost last weekend with both the Eels and Panthers exiting the 2017 NRL finals series. Obviously there are several key components in the make-up of a premiership-winning team. The skill level must be there, not just across the park, but in the pivotal positons. That’s why so much is made of ‘The Spine’ – 9, 7, 6 and 1. If you have very good players in these positions then you are a long way towards success. In the game of rugby league these are the people in control. They either direct the play with the ball or with their mouth. These are also the positions where one-off brilliance will often decide an encounter. A team must be disciplined. The best example here is the Storm. Craig Bellamy’s success is built on the ethos ‘train as you play’. Melbourne spend hours on individual plays – over and over – so that come game time they are entrenched. Good discipline means less penalties, fewer silly plays, tighter defence. A premiership team must have forward grunt. So often you hear: “The forwards must lay the platform

… and the points will come.” This is the ABC of rugby league, the battle for ‘middle earth’. The best teams have heart, passion, ticker – call it what you like. It’s that extra X-factor that comes from deep inside. You can have all the skill and power in the world, but unless you want to win for your mates, you are wasting your time. Think Cowboys. No team exudes this quality more than the North Queensland team. This is a club with inner harmony. Throw everything at them, but you can’t kill off that camaraderie. They want to play for each other. That’s why certain teams – full of talent and pre-finals form - fall away when the finals blowtorch is applied. Finally, and most importantly, a team’s mental approach must be spot on. Unless they know they can win, the big games are lost. If doubt creeps in then you are already behind on the score sheet. This is the one area that defines the great coaches. These men can instil belief. The Bennetts, the Bellamys of the world have the ability to switch players on, to have their minds in exactly the right place. So, skill, discipline, grunt, passion and the right mindset – these are the components that will decide

this weekend and the following. Only two of these five components are physical, three come from within – discipline, passion, mindset. Storm v Broncos (Friday, September 22, 7.55pm, AAMI Park, Melbourne): The two master coaches – Bennett and Bellamy – go head-to-head. The Storm are $1.30 favourites compared to the Broncos ($3.70) because they tick all the criteria. They are a machine. They have a brilliant spine, but their greatest attribute is their discipline. They appear almost unshakeable in their resolve. The Broncos are down on manpower, but not on passion. They have made it this far through sheer bloody-mindedness. So when you have two teams with s similar will-towin, you go through the check list. Melbourne are ahead in skills and discipline. It is their game to lose. • Your Local Independent tips: Storm Roosters v Cowboys (Saturday, September 23, 7.40pm, Allianz Stadium, Sydney): We keep saying it each weekend – what are the Cowboys still doing here? Their Mad Monday AND end-of-season trip should both be behind them. But, this is the story of 2017. This is the ‘lesson’ coaches will point to for the next few years. ‘Believe in yourself and the person beside you and anything is possible’. However the Cows have shown they are more than just passion 22nd – 23rd September 2017 and belief. Even without the best Friday 22nd September, 7.55pm, AAMI Park player in the world, they are still an Storm vs Broncos excellent football side. Their attack has Saturday 23rd September, 7.40pm, Allianz Stadium improved. Their skill set is now in the elite class. The Roosters are deserved Roosters vs Cowboys $1.35 favourites. But this is again a game that will be won in the heart and mind. The Sydney team has the skill set and power to end the Cowboys’ dream, but if they waiver in discipline, passion or mindset then this game will implode on them. YLI believes in sporting fairytales … so here’s an upset. • Your Local Independent tips: Cowboys
