The end of an era By NIKALA SIM
THE end of an era has been mourned with the passing of a local gentleman. John Bernard Greer was an integral part of the commercial fishing industry of the Hastings. Born in Manilla, near Tamworth, on August 1, 1937 he became a resident of Port Macquarie in 1951. John was originally apprenticed as a mechanic to a local garage before gaining employment with the Hastings River Fishermen’s Co-operative in 1956 where he manned the floor with Preston Cain and Terry O’Brien under the guidance of Mick Radley – one of the pioneers of the town’s fishing industry. Former co-operative member Cliff Elford was crew on one of Mick Radley’s three trawlers. The 70-year-old came to know John well as the pair worked together over the decades. The demand for locally caught and processed product was high, in the 1960s Cliff says, because frozen pre-packed product was not available. Local seafood was in abundance and John came to know the meaning of hard physical work. Ten trawlers and 30 to 40 river fishermen supplied lobster, prawns, fish and crabs to be sold locally, and in Sydney. John’s cousin Marjorie Inglis remembers he worked hard to save up for a bicycle to ride to work, and then even harder to purchase a car. Tenacity was a quality which John had in abundance. It took the co-operative board some time to convince him to become manager of the facility in 1973. • Continued Page 5

A WAUCHOPE business has had its reputation returned after a NSW Supreme Court judgement last week. The lengthy 277 point judgement of His Honour Justice Hall indicated that he found for Mid Coast Road Services (MCRS) in every aspect of the case against the Port MacquarieHastings Council. The four-year long litigation dealt with the termination of the local company’s contract, by Council, based on an incorrect understanding of a road-surface specification. The dispute came about when MCRS laid bitumen on a 600m stretch of road at Lake Cathie on Ocean Drive between Miala Street and Houston Mitchell Drive. Council prepared the site and MCRS laid bitumen which later showed signs of failure. His Honour Justice Hall ruled Council had relied upon the expertise of its Group Manager Infrastructure Delivery, Gary Randall. “He (Mr Randall) was extensively crossexamined as to his experience and expertise in the laying of asphalt and the construction of road base,” Justice Hall said. “The evidence effectively established that he had no experience with the laying of asphalt or the construction of road base, prior to being covered with asphalt, or as to drainage of an asphalt covered road. “He had had no responsibility for construction of a road, nor had he performed any engineering services in relation to the construction of a road. “He had limited formal training in relation to design and construction of roads. “Further, he held no personal experience or expertise in dealing with C245.” The specification C245 formed the basis of the original point of contention between Council and MCRS. Council had alleged the road company’s work did not comply with the standard, but this was based on an incorrect understanding and application upon the work. That contention was plainly wrong, Justice Hall said. The issue is that water is coming up under the road, MCRS owner Craig Pinson said.
MCRS owner Craig Pinson “The area is a floodplain and there is water laying both sides of the road with nothing to stop it entering and causing problems,” Mr Pinson said. “Before you construct any road, geotechnical investigations will to tell you what the pavement is made up of. “Normally we start with drainage - and that was our whole argument - that this road should have been started with drainage and that would
have fixed a lot of the problems.” The road has failed at least three times and will fail again because the underlying structure is engineered in a flawed manner, Mr Pinson said. To repair the road now requires that it be dug up and sub-soil drains put in, he said. MCRS had tried its best to resolve the issue and used the NSW Supreme Court as a last resort, legal representative Somerville Legal

associate solicitor Adam Cutri said. “There is some blame not just on individuals,” Mr Cutri said. “Prior to litigation my client tried to bring the issue to the attention of the Mayor, he brought it to the attention of the General Manager and the Director Infrastructure and Asset Management and on each occasion it fell on deaf ears. “The way the litigation was run (by Council) was very flippant. “The damages are not extensive but it’s more than that for our client - its about vindicating them in the local area. “They have been portrayed as people who didn’t comply with specifications, didn’t undertake their work in accordance with standards, they’ve lost contracts, the ability to do work for the Council and hopefully this will solve that issue.” Mr Cutri said his client hoped the judgement would open Council’s eyes to the issues in relation to the local area specifically in relation to the roads. “Council will know now that the specifications which they were attempting to apply were incorrect and we are hopeful that ratepayers money will be better spent rather than litigating in the Supreme Court, but instead fixing the state of the current roads in your local area.” The cost of the court case to the ratepayer is in the region of $750,000.

Special rate an unfair cash grab THE Permanent Special Rate Variation (SRV) referred to by council can be explained as follows. If we remember when County Councils were amalgamated in the late 1990s the NSW Government through IPART increased the charges for electricity based on a commercial rate of return from electricity distributors in order to pay a dividend to the NSW Government based on the distributors operating as a business. This then permitted the NSW Government to sell the state’s electricity businesses to private operators based on the guaranteed return for energy sold or transmitted over the distributors assets as set by IPART.
Put safety first AUSTRALIAN parents are disregarding safety guidelines, with the majority allowing more than one child on a trampoline and most parents not supervising children while they use them. The Australian Child Health Poll found one in six Australian children has sustained an injury such as a broken bone, concussion or strains
Once the government sold its electricity assets it required additional guaranteed income from the residents of NSW in the form of a new tax. Proposals of a land tax and motorist road usage tax were not well received thus the Government went back to its bag of tricks and adopted the merger of councils (similar to County Councils) with the slogan of making councils ‘Fit for the Future’. Since councils also rely on IPART to set their rate increases on an annual basis (similar to electricity pricing) the adoption of a Permanent Special Rate Variation is an attempt to cover a direct payment to the NSW State Government to replace its loss of guaranteed payment
from electricity businesses which the government sold based on a once off cash grab. While there may be a need to have NSW residents support the State Government’s use of a Permanent Special Rate Variation, which can be increased by IPART, it falls unfairly on residents who own their property. Those who rent property are not required to pay the SRV since their landlords can claim the increased cost of rates back against their taxes. In summary the proposed SRV is a hidden tax to raise money for the State Government based on the sale of electricity assets by passing the funding of government back to the
people of NSW while the previous funding has been passed to the new owners of the state’s electricity assets. It is time that the residents of NSW saw through the government’s financial advisers’ ploy to pass on the cost to run the state’s government to home owners (including pensioners with diminishing incomes) through special tax rises. We must all stand up and say ‘No’ to our councils who are being used to simply funnel money to the NSW Government. There must be a fairer way to fund government rather than through increased local council rates. Ray Wilkie Yippin Creek

Respondents living in regional Australia were more likely to report knowing first aid for a head injury, broken or dislodged tooth or an unconscious child, as well as having increased confidence in rescuing a child from a pool and administering CPR. The poll also found that one in six

IT’S just three more sleeps until most of us are knee deep in the chaos that is now Christmas! Sadly, the actual ‘reason for the season’ seems to have slid down the pecking order somewhat and is now covered in a pile of commercial hype, masquerading as Christmas. Many of us will spend the next three days racing around like headless chooks, trying to get final preparations for the ‘big day’ completed, possibly spend hours travelling with cantankerous children to visit family and generally stress ourselves out! Christmas Day will be a resounding success, give or take a few tense moments when the family dynamics kick in. About three to five days later the kitchen will be cleared of the leftovers. We will emerge from our food comas and prepare for New Year’s Eve. Unfortunately, not all of us will be sharing Christmas with family or friends. In fact there are a lot of people in our community who are homeless, abandoned, live alone, suffer from addictions and or mental illnesses who will be on their own. No presents, no food. Thankfully, local organisations are providing for these people in the form of soup kitchens, giving trees, hampers etc. And kindhearted volunteers help fill the gap delivering the goods, feeding people and generally showing people love. You are all amazing. Thank you! The true spirit of Christmas!

TO Alana at the Kew Corner Store for making such a beautiful coffee. If you’re ever around there make sure you stop in for a coffee!
MY son will be starting kindergarten next year at Port Macquarie Public School. Over four months, my son and I joined other families on a Thursday morning at a transitionto-school program called ‘Little Dolphins’. Every week, for four hours, I could stay and watch my son with his new classmates do early literacy and numeracy, play, create, learn and have heaps of fun! It was a great introduction to ‘big school’, preparing my son and myself for it. He already made friends. He came back home with a beautiful book full of crafts that they have made and a certificate given by the Principal to congratulate him for completing the program. My son was so proud. I can’t thank enough the school and their teacher Joanna McKeough. She was amazing. I feel so fortunate for being able to be part of this program and share those moments in school with my son. It looks like it also prepared me for the big transition!

On ya bike Luke! By NIKALA SIM
OUR Federal Member of Parliament has donned his lycra in the name of charity. Luke Hartsuyker peddled 175km, from Coffs Harbour to Port Macquarie, to raise money for just two of the many deserving organisations he sees doing valued work across the Cowper electorate. “There are so many good causes out there struggling for money,” Luke says. “As a member of parliament with many contacts I have a greater opportunity than the average person to raise funds. “I have the opportunity to raise significant funds for just two of the many wonderful causes out there.” The 2016 Charity Bike Ride is in support of the Disabled Surfers’ Association (DSA branches Mid North Coast and Hastings/ Port Macquarie) and the Macleay Vocational College. Luke has been a volunteer with DSA for many years and is truly committed to seeing people with a disability enjoy the beach, and surf, in a supportive and safe environment. “I have seen first-hand how the experience of getting into the surf for the first time changes lives.” The Macleay Vocational College is a school for kids who haven’t succeeded in mainstream schooling and suffer some real challenges, Luke says. It has achieved extraordinary results, with many graduates going on to university, apprenticeships, and good jobs in the local community. This is the seventh year the 57-year-old has hit the road for charity. In previous years he has ridden from Maclean in the north to Kempsey but with the recent electoral boundary change this year’s ride went from Coffs Harbour to Port Macquarie.

The end of a local era • From Page 1 However from that day, until the day he retired, he worked doggedly for the betterment of his peers. John was an exceptional manager and it was his hard work that was responsible for the highest earning of all the Hastings River Fishermen’s Co-operative’s 69 years. The closure and demolition of the icon this year, broke this quiet, honest man’s heart, cousin Maureen Sullivan says. After retirement, John had continued to act as pay master and was only forced away due to ill-health. Cecil Hyde said John’s passing was like losing a brother. “He was a very gentle bloke who always spoke the truth and never said a bad word about anyone.” At the age of four John lost his father to World War II. He was a devoted son to his mother, performed National Service with the Royal Australian Air Force and was well-known to members of the Westport Bowling Club. John passed away on December 11 and will be greatly missed.
Extra Xmas bin services
“You see a lot more on the push bike and certainly get a feel for the uphills and downhills you don’t notice in a car,” Luke says. “The whole electorate is a beautiful place to ride - it’s fantastic. “I ran along a section of the new Pacific Highway and cruised at around 40km due to a beautiful tailwind and road surface.” After a challenging trip along Mariah River Road the politician was pleased to take a break for the ferry ride across Settlement Point. It was the highlight of his ride: “It’s beautiful,
I don’t have to pedal,” Luke said. When Luke joined parliament he joined fellow MP Tony Abbott on a pollie pedal. “A pollie pedal without pollies is just a pedal, so I went on that. “It forced me to get back into it because Abbott’s obviously a very good rider. “So I got a bike and got back into it and have been riding ever since, on and off, for ten years.” To contribute to the spirit of charity this Christmas go to http://bit.ly/2gGX5KC
PORT Macquarie-Hastings Council residents will see extra bin collections over the Christmas period. Yellow recycling bins will be collected weekly between Monday, December 26, and Friday, January 6. It was just beautiful, that was so special. It was a moment when you’re glad you’ve been alive and witnessed something like that.

A focus on natural beauty By NIKALA SIM
THE amazing story of an osprey nest collapsing in the middle of a lake is the first book of professional wildlife photographer Silva Vaughan-Jones. A decade ago the photographer fell in love when she first saw a cathedral-like nest. Silva remembers the day like it was yesterday. “Osprey nests are enormous and very, very impressive”, she says. “They are made of over 1000 sticks and each year when the bottom falls out the birds just add more.” Over the last 10 years the Wauchope woman has taken hundreds of photographs of ospreys while travelling our region to document its bird life. Even though it is important to document wildlife, Silva always thought something more needed to be done with the images and so she has published her first book. ‘Osprey’ is the story of a breeding pair who ran into trouble after their nesting site, in the middle of a lake, collapsed. Silva documented the erection an artificial nesting platform. The story, which took place four-years-ago, led to success and the fish eagles have bred successfully in the years since. Sadly, Silva says, on one occasion the hatchlings were predated by a sea eagle and its fledgling, and on another the eggs were not viable. Overall though the project to introduce a
Professional wildlife photographer Silva Vaughan-Jones with her book Osprey built structure for the birds to nest on has been a success, she says. Her book not only tells this story but illustrates it with amazing moments captured by her lens. Silva spent many hours with bird expert Dave Whitefield as he documented the activity of the nest. But one particular day delivered something very special. “I was out there on my own and it was stinking
hot - it was horrible,” Silva says. “I had been there every day waiting and this particular day there was a bit of a breeze. “I was there from very early in the morning and then suddenly one of the ospreys took off.” It was the young raptor’s first flight and was very wobbly, Silva says. It flew around and then landed on a post. “I was taking photographs from a respectable distance but I was so worried and anxious - quite concerned,” she said. “After it landed and then took off again it came down on lots of different surfaces. It was having a lovely time exploring and was absolutely so joyful and thrilled at its success.” When the fledgling landed in water and all its feathers fluffed up Silva couldn’t help but laugh, she says. “It was just beautiful, that was so special. “It was a moment when you’re glad you’ve been alive and witnessed something like that.” The birds were quite accustomed to her presence and this first flight was just one of many magic moments captured in her book, Silva says. The thing that impresses the professional wildlife photographer most about ospreys is the way they catch fish, she says. Their claws lock in a particular way so the slippery fish doesn’t fall out. However, if a fish is too big the bird can get pulled under water and drown. The most amazing thing she has seen an osprey do was have a fight with a sea eagle over a fish, Silva says.
This fellow raptor is some four-times bigger than an osprey. Silva has given many talks on birds and each time it takes her back to her years at the London Zoo. It was here that she worked for the education department and devoted her time to teaching children about nature. But after emigrating to Australia in 1973 photography became her focus and her passion. At the age of 35, the now 69-year-old, relocated from Sydney to the Hastings to have better access to the natural world. It has been here where Silva has followed the example set by her uncle Tom Vaughan-Jones. In the latter half of the 19th century he was Director of Game and Tsetse Control in Northern Rhodesia (modern day Zambia). Also an author and instrumental in establishing African wildlife conservation, Tom was a Fellow of the London Zoo and was made a Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire for his work on eradication of encephalitis spread by the tetse fly. “We used to get on like a house on fire - he was my role model,” Silva says. There are approximately 50 pairs of breeding Ospreys between Forster and Coffs Harbour, a large representation considering there are less than 300 birds state-wide. Silva’s first book ‘Osprey’ can be purchased from Sea Acres Rainforest Centre in Port Macquarie, www.silvavaughanjones.com or www.amazon.com

The real gift of Xmas
Volunteers from the Macleay Coast Church in Kempsey Bob Murray, Assistant Pastor Moira Hodgekiss, Sarah Apps, Senior Pastor Burrel Glasspell, Deb Oakes, Lisa Davis and Anne Similas organising over 240 Christmas hampers to deliver to struggling families
By SUE PATERICK MEMBERS of the Macleay Coast Church are lighting up the lives of struggling Kempsey families this festive season like twinkling decorations on a Christmas tree. So far over 240 Christmas hampers have been filled to overflowing with non-perishable food, toys, cosmetics and clothes. To help look after families in need the Church established the iCare initiative six years ago, which is funded entirely by donations. This Christmas Assistant Pastor, Moira Hodgekiss, said she sent out hundreds of emails locally and interstate asking for help. “And it has been the best year ever,” she said, beaming. “We’ve never had so much abundance before and it’s incredible.” For members of the Macleay Coast Church
this abundance is seen as an outpouring of God’s love. “There is so much need in this town so He has blessed us with His goodness and provided food, toys and clothes,” Moira said. She also contacted L’Oréal with the hope the company would donate women’s products because there were a lot of single mum’s in the Macleay who had no money for personal items. L’Oréal referred Moira to Good360. This organisation receives excess stock from manufacturers and distributes these goods to charities. From Good360 iCare received toys, makeup and dinnerware, and local transport company Macleay Valley Transport very kindly picked up the five pallets of goods from Sydney. A generous Sydney couple also donated 600 T-shirts and a lot of lovely women’s clothing. When delivered these hampers will delight
so many families who didn’t expect much this Christmas. According to Moira, the number of hampers could increase because demand was so great. The Church has been operating in Kempsey for 34 years, but it isn’t just Christmas when it shines. Every week Moira and a band of volunteers fill their cars with dry goods purchased from Foodbank in Sydney and donations received from local businesses. They then go either doorknocking or delivering to individuals or families referred by local agencies. “In God’s Kingdom, He loves everybody,” Moira explained. “What we do is all about love and this is a true love story about God who really does love people and this is one way how He declares that.”

THE COWPER REPORT With Luke Hartsuyker
Federal Member for Cowper
THE Australian economy’s transition away from the resources-led boom towards broader-based growth is presenting different challenges and opportunities for Australia’s regions. In order to better understand this, the Government has provided the Productivity Commission with terms of reference to commence a study on the impact of the transition on regional economies. While Australia continues to benefit from strong commodity export growth and a transition to broader-based growth is underway, there are some parts of Australia doing it tougher than others. We’re fortunate on the Mid North Coast to have resilient local economies experiencing continued growth supported by industries such as primary production, tourism, small business, education and manufacturing. However there is always room for improvement, and the Productivity Commission study presents an opportunity for Cowper constituents to provide input. Nationally, the economy is reconciling the impacts of globalisation and technological change and the Coalition Government wants to ensure that Australians are not being left behind. The Government has a clear economic plan to support this transition, to fuel economic growth and deliver our children and grandchildren the jobs they deserve. The Commission is due to provide an initial report to the Government in April, 2017, and a final report within 12 months. Public consultation will be undertaken as part of the study and the Government encourages all interested parties to participate. Further information, the terms of reference are and how to make a submission is available online at http://www.pc.gov.au/inquiries/current/ transitioning-regions.

leads the pack NSW Economy Leading The Nation: The NSW Liberals and Nationals Government Budget Half-Yearly Review confirmed NSW is in the black and net debt is at historical lows, with the State’s economy the economic powerhouse of the nation. Last week the government released the HalfYearly Review, which shows surpluses averaging $1.8 billion over four years. The budget result for 2016-17 is forecast to deliver a surplus of nearly $4 billion – a result $259.9 million above the forecast set out in the 2016-17 Budget. The people of NSW elected us five years ago to turn NSW around and make NSW number one again. Today is a reminder we have done just that. When we came to office Labor had left the budget in tatters and NSW was the weakest economy in the nation. We have worked hard as a team and NSW is now far ahead of the pack. The State is in Australia’s strongest budgetary position, while leading on all key economic indicators. This means we are able to continue to invest a record amount into new infrastructure and services to take NSW into the future, while having the lowest net debt of any mainland state in the country. Liquor Law Reform: The NSW Government’s changes to liquor law reforms are a big win for the local community.
STATE MATTERS
With Leslie Williams State Member for Port Macquarie
The changes include extending takeaway and home delivery alcohol sales from 10pm to 11pm, and shifting the Three Strikes scheme from the venue to the licensee. I’m very happy that there is an extension to takeaway and home delivery alcohol sales which I know will be welcomed, especially by local shift workers. It is important to take into account local circumstances and requirements of a particular community in undertaking any regulatory intervention. The NSW Government will continue to look at the policy changes annually as more data becomes available. Merry Christmas: My staff and I would like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a safe and relaxing New Year. The Port Macquarie electorate office in Grant Street will be closed from 4pm this Friday, December 23, and will reopen at 9am on Tuesday January 3, 2017.
Council on litter blitz PORT Macquarie-Hastings Council has embarked on a 10-month ‘litter blitz’ program targeting litter hotspots including Town Beach, Town Beach Park, the Kooloonbung Creek foreshore, Westport Park carpark and Horton Street. A number of local businesses have enthusiastically put their hands up to be litter partners and will help spread the antilitter message through encouraging their customers to do their bit in helping keeping our community clean, green and litter free. “It’s great to have Charles Sturt University, Port Macquarie Chamber of Commerce, Rydges, Salty Crew Kiosk, Port Macquarie Breakwall Holiday Park, Parkrun and Boomerang Bags all contributing to this important community initiative,” said Mayor Peter Besseling. “Each year more than 25,000 tons of litter is tossed across NSW. A recent ‘litter blitz’ clean up across the Port Macquarie CBD and foreshore resulted in the collection of 6 wheelie-bins of rubbish in just two days,” Cr Besseling said. As part of the program, new and larger public bins will be installed, signage will be improved, and there will be increased surveillance. In the early stages, Council rangers will provide education and awareness around correct waste disposal, and will work closely with local businesses and the community. Businesses and community groups interested in becoming litter partners can contact council at pmhc.nsw.gov.au/litter or by calling 6581 8111.
Two words that can unite the world my
I WAS travelling through Oberndorf when the coach driver mentioned a happening in a local church one Christmas Eve in 1818. He asked if anybody knew what it was. He gave many clues. I thought I knew the answer, but I kept my mouth shut. This was the place where Silent Night was written. The driver said he would have stopped, but the neighbours had allegedly complained about tourist buses and so he kept on driving to Sound of Music territory. You all know Silent Night, the Christmas song that was made popular by, wait for it, the American singing cowboy, Gene Autry. In German it was called Stille Nacht, Heilige Nacht The first words, in German, went: Stille nacht, heilige nacht Alles schlaft, einsam wacht, Nur das traute hochheilige paar. Holder knabe im lockigen haar. Schlaf in himmlischer, ruh. Schlaf in himmlischer ruh. The story is that in Oberndorf the local Catholic church’s organ had died on Christmas Eve in 1818. The church was St Nicholas parish church. The curate, Father Mohr, needed a Christmas
LAURIE BARBER
song for that evening’s Christmas service, so he asked the church’s musician and schoolmaster Franz Gruber, if he had anything. Gruber came up with a poem Father Mohr had written much earlier. So the two put the poem to music, Franz Gruber is given credit for the music and they came up with Silent Night, to guitar accompaniment, for that evening’s service. Some versions of the story allege that Mohn had written the poem on Christmas Eve, but he had written the poem in Mariapfarr much earlier, as much as two years earlier, and the poem was produced for public display that Christmas Eve. The tune is a simple one, so they might have completed the tune on Christmas Eve. The organ might not have been broken and it is possible that the locals simply enjoyed singing simple melodies without organ accompaniment. They entered the church late on Christmas Eve and went home on Christmas Day. They probably
also had a nativity scene and enjoyed Christmas the way it was intended to be celebrated. The song that we sing today is slightly different from the original version. The English version was written by Episcopal priest John Freeman Young in New York in 1859. This standard version that we sing today contains only three verses, whereas the original version, so I believe, contained six verses. The original version was also more sprightly than the version we sing today. You remember the words of course. It starts like this: “Silent night, holy night; all is calm, all is bright.” The song was declared an intangible national heritage by UNESCO in 2011. A very popular version is by Bing Crosby. The original manuscript has been lost, but an early manuscript was found in 1820. What was I doing in the area? I was on a river cruise from Amsterdam to Budapest. I recommend it. During the wartime Christmas truce of 1914, Allied and German troops sang Silent Night. People all over the world instantly recognise Silent Night. lauriebarber.com;lbword@midcoast.com.au

New website major boost for disabled
Founder of charities the Shalom House of Hope, The Saving Place and #NoKidHungryAu at South Kempsey, Dave Davis, thanking a Mid North Coast Correctional Centre inmate (who can’t be identified), Corrective Services NSW Trade Overseer, Lisa Brown, and Baptistcare Chaplin, James Deaton, on behalf of all the inmates and staff who donated non-perishable food and money to #NoKidHungryAu this Christmas
A NEW employment and training website has been designed with disabilities in mind. The Tursa Employment and Training disability-friendly site was launched, earlier this month, on the International Day of People with a Disability. Board member Debbie Fry said the international event was about increasing public and business understanding and acceptance of people with disability and to celebrate their achievements and contributions to the local community. “Hundreds of businesses throughout the Mid-North Coast recognise what valuable and reliable employees people with disability can be,” Ms Fry said. The theme of the new website is ‘connecting’. The site has been designed to increase the ease of accessibility of online content to all users through the latest technology. Features include Text to Talk which allows users to ‘hear’ the website’s typed information. Variable font sizes and a high contrast function assist visually challenged users to find employment-related information. Every page of the website can be translated into over 100 languages. TURSA’s person-centred approach provides job seekers with connection to community, government services and employment and underpins the long-term success of the organisation. This service is provided to all clients across Tursa’s disability employment services and general employment services.
No bounds to Xmas giving By SUE PATERICK THE generosity of inmates and staff at the Mid North Correctional Centre filled a dozen fruit crates with non-perishable food last week to ensure people in need don’t go hungry over Christmas. Corrective Services NSW Trade Overseer, Lisa Brown, came up with the idea of the inmates giving to a local charity during this festive season several weeks ago. After she discussed it with the Correctional Centre’s Baptistcare Chaplain, James Deaton, they suggested the idea to a few of the representative inmates and it was embraced. “The inmates ran with the opportunity to give,” James said. The next step was finding a worthy charity. After speaking to a few people in town and searching Google, James contacted Dave Davis founder of the Shalom House of Hope and The Saving Place at South Kempsey. Dave’s charity focuses on collecting and distributing food that will normally be thrown away. The food is all non-perishable and nothing is

used if a package is damaged. Woolworths at Macksville donates the food that is collected from Monday to Saturday. “I’m stunned with the quality we get,” Dave said. Apart from dry goods and tinned food, The Saving Place also receives fruit, vegetables, and frozen meat that is close to its use-by date. Donated non-food items are sold through the Tender Centre at South Kempsey under the banner of The Saving Place. Dave also founded #NoKidHungryAu and when James learnt that charity gave food to local Kempsey schools, the Kempsey PCYC and the Macleay Vocational College, he wanted to support it. The #NoKidHungryAu collection was held on Wednesday, December 14, at the Mid North
Correctional Centre. “It was great to see the inmates giving what they could, especially considering they were given little notice about this event,” James said. “The numerous inmates who weren’t able to give any non-perishable food wanted to donate money instead and although we weren’t facilitating inmates giving financially this time, we will certainly try to accommodate these other means of them giving to the community in the future.” A collection point was also established for both officers and other staff who were also eager to give this Christmas. Dave was ecstatic on Friday, December 16, when he collected the heart-felt donation. While James hoped to support another charity campaign next year.

Sponsored by SkillsLink Training - your community college.
There is help to meet challenges THE past year has been a tough one for lots of people in the Port Macquarie-Hastings region as well as many other parts of the country. The slowing economy, tight competition for jobs in our area, and rural industry restructuring have made for challenging times in regional Australia. Port Macquarie Community College has faced many of these issues itself, while trying to offer opportunities for new learning and life development to our community. We hope to have helped those changing careers through retraining, and those re-entering the workforce by upskilling and finding new work experience openings. Our social development programs have also created new opportunities for people in recovery from challenges, be they mental distress, trauma, disability or social disadvantage. We aim to build on all those programs in 2017, and to expand the offerings in LifeSkills Express and Creative Arts for Recovery through the School of Hard Knocks, which already runs the successful Absolutely Everybody Choir. This will include topics such as creative writing, painting and sculpture, and storytelling. We welcome your ideas and involvement, whether you would like to volunteer or to approach us about building a course for a group you know are needing to learn more about a particular life or vocational skill. While we love serving the Port Macquarie, Wauchope and Hastings areas, we have also reached out to Taree, Kempsey and Nambucca Valley this year. So 2017 looks set for a growing number of programs, including the Nautilus alternative senior college for young people who are seeking a different path than mainstream high school. On behalf of Port Macquarie Community College staff, we wish you, our community, the very best for a safe and happy Christmas and New Year. Call in at 77 Hastings River Drive, at the bottom of Clifton Drive, or ring 65837288 and visit our website on www.skillslinktraining.com. au to see all our other programs and courses.

Church move ‘a miracle’ WELL may I say, God save the Catholic Church, because nothing will save the Port MacquarieHastings Council. In a twist of events few would have seen coming, the local Catholic Church administration looks to have secured the purchase of Tuffins Lane. Hopefully. In recent days, the Catholic Church and the local sporting groups have banded together to work up a positive and real long-term solution – effectively working around council. Hats off to these great folks for taking up the challenge on behalf of the community at a time when council had turned its back on them. I cannot recall seeing a greater show of noconfidence in a local council than seeing the community fight back in such a way as we’ve seen here. And I couldn’t be more impressed with their efforts. In a late twist to this sorry saga, and after the council has been resisting anything to do with the retention of Tuffins Lane, the Mayor now wants to be all over it again.
The Rinse Cycle
By Adam Roberts - Former Councillor, Port MacquarieHastings Council
Out of the blue, the Mayor put forward a report to council less than two hours before the December council meeting seeking councillors’ support to negotiate terms with the Catholic Church to play a role in the future management of the sports fields. Unfortunately, through this impeccably-timed brainwave, he could have cost the church and sports groups the entire deal because they had not yet purchased the land as they were still in the pre-purchase phase. Further, the use of a Mayoral Minute (the technical name for his report to council) is set aside for urgent matters and its use on this
occasion by the Mayor can be argued as another example of lack of consultation and transparency and confirming the ad-hoc decision-making processes still plaguing this council regime. Given that the church hadn’t yet taken ownership of the land, there was no urgency in the matter – other than for the Mayor to grab a headline before the Christmas break. The Mayor and council now want to offer the church around $100,000 in resourcing each year for 5-10 years to help maintain the sports fields on behalf of the church. However, the Mayor and council also re-confirmed their continued pursuit of the development of Wauchope’s flood prone land as the ‘longer-term strategy’ to replace Tuffins Lane. Which mind you, could run up a cost to ratepayers of more than $20,000,000. (*Disclaimer: Adam Roberts is a voluntary contributor to Your Local Independent. Local mums rapt with ‘baby’ clinic By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC
Port Macquarie mother of four Nikki Gibbs with five-and-a-half-monthold Noah
NEW mothers are singing the praises of the Postnatal Maternity Clinic Port Macquarie, which recently celebrated its first birthday. Port Macquarie mother of four Nikki Gibbs said the clinic was a great help to her after the birth of now five-and-a-halfmonth-old Noah. “It was nice to know that there was somewhere to go if I had any queries,” said Nikki. “There was always two or three people there to help me.” The clinic is a drop-in style service and runs once a week for four hours. Since it opened in September last year, the clinic has provided support to more than 100 women and 110 infants. “They were great,” said Nikki. “If you’ve got questions about your baby in terms of how they are feeding, growing and sleeping - just any questions in general - they’re there to answer. “It also helps put new mothers and parents at ease. I used it for weighing my baby and just general checks, but I suppose there are also a few questions that I asked along the way that they helped me with.” Nikki says she has had a great experience with the clinic and would recommend it for any new parents in the area. “They are lovely and always really reassuring,” she said. “Whenever I have gone there I have also seen them helping out so many other mothers.” The clinic was established with funding from the Mid North Coast Local Health District Research and Quality Improvement Grant scheme, to provide more effective postnatal care services and to better meet the needs of local women. It is a collaborative initiative between the Mid North Coast Local Health District and the University of Newcastle and is staffed by a registered midwife and midwifery students. The one stop clinic has given access for mothers and parents to postnatal maternal and infant health assessments, interdisciplinary health care referrals, education, care and support for women from the time they are discharged from hospital through to six weeks post birth.

Award for council
PORT Macquarie-Hastings Council has been recognised by its peers as having the best placemaking philosophy in the Asia Pacific region. At the recent 2016 Place Leaders Asia Pacific Awards, Council won the ‘Place Process Award’. The award is recognition of Councils commitment to a solution-focussed approach in working with the local community in improving, activating and creating more vibrant public spaces. “Council has had a strong emphasis on a place making approach for the last two years, involving 19 townships and communities across our region,” said Council Acting Director Liesa Davies. Place making is about creating new, and transforming existing public spaces into vibrant and inclusive places. They are spaces that make us feel welcome, create a sense of belonging and desire to stay. Initiatives that are great examples of Council’s place making commitment include Comboyne being voted the ‘legendairy’ capital of NSW, the Tastings Ignites festival and Clarence Place Street Food

Dave’s visit far from pointless behind him. He lay curled up, eyes closed on an old green mattress on the creek bank of the park. Mack told us he’d been on the streets for several years. Mack began to cry as he shared his very violent upbringing, telling us how, as a sevenyear-old he often watched his mother ‘get bashed like a rag doll’. “What could we give Mack? Our respect. Our company, and a little bit of comfort. When we gave Mack his brand new zero-degree sleeping bag, he was speechless with only tears streaming his cheeks, before saying: ‘The red carpet was rolled out for me today. I feel like a million dollars now’. When we asked him the last time he felt happy, he replied with ‘when I was in
hospital … the food was so good’.” True happiness was at the end of a phone call on October 13 for Mr Drury as Mack had contacted him to tell him he was not only off the streets, but was living in a unit, with his own bedroom, a backyard with grass, a front door with a lock on it, a shower, and a bed. “He’s really happy,” said Mr Drury. “And so am I. He’s safe, warm, and his life is in a better place to when we met just five weeks ago.” Help someone sleep a little better this Christmas and visit www.pointsforpurpose.org And for more real stories from Points for Purpose visit www.medium.com/@ points4purpose

FOUNDER of ‘Points for Purpose’ Dave Drury is coming to Port Macquarie to warm up the streets this Christmas. Points for Purpose is an organisation focused on encouraging people to spend their unlikely-tobe-used Fly Buys and airline points. By donating these excess points, people have the chance to give someone who is homeless a warm night’s sleep with a zero-degree sleeping bag. Dave Drury has been working tirelessly to get people warm, off the streets, and back on their feet and now he’s ready to take on his former home town. “I am coming back to Port for Christmas for
a few weeks so I intend on meeting a few of the charities in person whilst there,” Mr Drury said. “I’m really keen to drive action in the Hastings area so we can start to drive impact.” Mr Drury spent many nights sleeping outside as research to fully understand the life of a homeless person. During this time he realised that a warm and comfortable night’s sleep was so vital for every person. Points for Purpose has already achieved many success stories in its short time and Mack’s case is a true success. “Mack, until very recently, was living in Como Dog Park,” said Mr Drury. “When we went to meet Mack, his life’s possessions sat covered by blue tarpaulins in four plastic boxes

BOM: What a catch! “
This summer the Bureau of Meteorology has made it even easier to check the weather and ocean conditions
“
FINDING the perfect fishing spot is a fine art, but whatever secret location you choose to fish in this summer, the most important aspect of your search should be to ensure you won’t get caught out by the weather. This summer the Bureau of Meteorology has made it even easier to check the weather and ocean conditions with the introduction of a few simple tools and tips. The Bureau’s Tide Prediction portal has recently been upgraded to provide predicted tide heights and times for over 700 locations around Australia. Check the extended weather forecast and the tides a few days before your fishing trip, to help inform where and when might be the best and safest to go fishing. The Bureau’s graphical mapping tool MetEye can be used to visualise the weather forecast and zoom to any location. MetEye provides information on the height and direction of different swell conditions, as well as wind waves and total wave height. Rock fishing is a popular recreational activity but it’s also one of Australia’s most dangerous sports. The Bureau has developed a guide on how to use MetEye for rock fishing including a video.
You can find further information about weather safety checks for rock fishing on the Bureau’s website. These pages are translated into traditional and simplified Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean, and Malay. Rock fishers can also read up on a new blog that outlines how and when to check the weather for rock fishers planning their next fishing trip. The Bureau recommends three vital weather safety checks: tides, waves and winds. The Bureau’s new mobile app ‘BOM Weather’ can be downloaded for free and used to check warnings, view the rain radar for current

conditions, or to check the forecast for storms or strong winds. The Bureau of Meteorology’s National Manager of Marine Weather Services, Neal Moodie urges fishing enthusiasts to take advantage of these new tools intended to make fishing a more enjoyable and safe activity. “Australians enjoy the great outdoors all year round. Stay safe by making the most of the Bureau’s range of marine and ocean information when you go rock fishing,” Mr Moodie said. “Be prepared to make alternate arrangements if conditions change.”
Competition brings energy costs down MEMBER for Oxley Melinda Pavey has welcomed a new report by the Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal (IPART) showing energy market reforms in NSW have succeeded in creating more choice and savings for residential and business electricity customers. Ms Pavey said since the Government removed retail price regulation two years ago eleven new retailers have entered the market, including six in the last year. “This has created greater choices for customers, substantial service innovations and prices consistent with a competitive market,” Mrs Pavey said. “Typical residential customers can save between $284 and $445 per year by shopping around and making the switch to a new product or retailer. “For small business customers, those savings could be between $568 and $856.” “This is good news for consumers and all part of the NSW Government’s efforts to create more competition in the market to supports savings for customers and help to drive innovation in the NSW energy sector. “The IPART report shows that engaged customers benefit most from competition and I recommend local residents and businesses take the time to compare products using the free price comparison site www.energymadeeasy. gov.au to try to find a better deal. “Many products now make it easier for customers to manage their bills, with monthly and fortnightly billing options bringing an end to the quarterly ‘bill shock’, and real-time price signals helping consumers achieve significant energy savings.” To view the IPART report visit: www.ipart. nsw.gov.au

STUMP THE PREACHER
“
Then he was captivated by the sermon’s opening challenge – ‘If you were to die tonight, would you be sure to go to heaven?’
QUESTION: Why does God seem to take a long time to answer my prayers? Many people find their prayers take a long time for God to provide an answer. For many of us the answer is WAIT! This can be frustrating. Some may doubt that God loves them or may believe that He won’t answer their prayer. However, God’s timing is always GOOD. We may not think so at the time but many who have had to wait for answers will confess that when the answer has come it has been at the perfect time. Someone who waited for a long time, in the Bible, was Simeon. He had read the prophecies from the book of Isaiah about the coming Messiah. These prophecies were given some 600 years before the coming of Jesus Christ. We are not sure how long Simeon went up to the temple in Jerusalem. We do know Simeon had for a long time watched for the Messiah. Simeon was getting very old and had begun to be anxious that he would die before the Messiah arrived at the temple. Finally, the day came when Joseph and Mary presented their child at the temple. Simeon knew this was the promised Messiah. He held the child and praised God (Luke 2:21-40). Why did Simeon have to wait so long? His trust in God’s prophetic Word was tested and he would have grown immensely in faith. We don’t know the answer. But what we do know is God always does what is best and His timing is perfect. We read in Isaiah 40 verse 31 about those who ‘hope in the Lord’ – this means being ‘entwined with the Lord’, growing much closer and then they ‘will soar like eagles and not grow weary, walk and not faint’. In other words, there is great strength to be found in waiting - hope grows and grows. The prophet Habakkuk when speaking about waiting for the Lord God says: “I will stand at my watch and STATION myself on the ramparts” (Habakkuk 2:1). This is like sitting at a station waiting for God to answer and for God to act. We are full of expectancy and anticipation. The writer of Proverbs sums it all up very succinctly when he said: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him and He will make your paths straight” (Proverbs 3:5-6).
Way back when With Pastor, Kerry & Julie
JOHN (true story, but not his real name) wandered into Church at 11pm, December 24, 1974, for the Christmas Eve Service. He sat in the back pew and tried to look inconspicuous. It was the first time he had entered a church since his Sunday School days. John was troubled and looking for help - his business was not doing well and this had put pressure on his marriage and he was worried his wife may soon walk-out on him and take the children. He needed some answers! John pretended to sing the Christmas Carols, he tried to follow the service and the Bible readings. As the preacher climbed into the pulpit to preach the sermon, he wondered how he was going to stay awake! Then he was captivated by the sermon’s opening challenge – “If you were to die tonight, would you be sure to go to heaven?” John was jolted awake by this challenging statement. He hoped he would go to heaven, he was basically a good man, he tried to keep the law and do good in the community. He was failing with his marriage, but he hoped God would understand. The preacher continued speaking about the Second Coming of Jesus Christ and how this would usher in the end of the world as we know it. John became disturbed in his spirit as the sermon went on. Is the world coming to an end soon? Is Jesus really coming again, a second time?
The devastation caused by Cyclone Tracy changed many lives - and not just of those living in Darwin the moment Jesus was coming back? He broke into a cold sweat and dropped to his knees in the kitchen and cried out to God. He tried to remember the prayer the preacher had prayed in the Church and mumbled something similar, seeking to find his peace with God. A calmness and peace came over him. The next morning the reports of Cyclone Tracy destroying Darwin were on the news. John awoke a new man and asked his wife and children to accompany him back to Church for Christmas Day. God saved John that Christmas Eve, saved his marriage and saved his business. This Christmas seek Jesus for yourself and make your peace with God. Make this the best Christmas ever!
The preacher concluded by praying for any in the packed church that Christmas Eve who were unsure of where they will spend eternity – for those not certain of their ‘peace with God.’ John listened to the prayer, but didn’t say or pray anything. He left the church at 12.30am and made his way home. His wife and children were asleep, so he sat down in the kitchen and opened a bottle of beer and turned on the radio and began to think about what he had heard tonight. Suddenly, there was an emergency warning being broadcast – Darwin and been hit by a cyclone and the top-end of Australia seemed to have dropped out! John sat bolt-upright in shock - what had happened? Was the world about to end? Was this

In a letter to the Parish, Reverend Webb said: “In times of change as we seek for God’s leading and direction for 2017 I believe it is important to remember that this is God’s church. “When I pray seeking God’s vision for the Trinity and Port Macquarie community I am filled with great optimism and peace.” It is somewhat fitting that the first services Reverend Webb will preside over will be the Christmas Services.
He has served there for the past five years along with his wife, Michelle, and children Thomas, Emma, Harry and Bella. Reverend David Blackmore has overseen the parish during the interim period. Together with Church Wardens, he invites the people of Port Macquarie and regions to join him to celebrate the beginning of a new chapter. Local label targets locals By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC A NEW record label in Port Macquarie is already showcasing top performers. Locals Lisa Willows and Simon Leigh have launched their new record label ‘Red Earth Records’. The label, that seeks to represent the aesthetics and atmosphere of the solo artist and acoustic guitar-playing culture that has long been an integral part of Port Macquarie music, has already found two talented local performers - Roy Rose and Benje Travis. Roy, from Wauchope, says that signing with ‘Red Earth Records’ has been a massive highlight in his career, has resulted in him being on radio for the first time and he is loving every minute of it. “It’s been 10 years since I’ve released anything,” said Roy. “But I’m always doing festivals, I’m doing them about every six to eight weeks.” However, it’s the creative side of the industry that Roy has always loved. “I grew up around music,” Roy explains. “When I was a kid my dad used take me to blues festivals and blues gigs. I’ve always had it around me and in my life so it’s just a continuation for me. “I don’t really listen to anything and get inspired anymore, it’s more so I just enjoy writing and creating music.” Locals will often see Roy playing at local venues and in nearby towns. “Tonight I’m performing down at the Hastings Hotel, so I do a lot of small local gigs,” Roy said. “I play at The Pier a lot in Port and I’ve had some really good response from the audiences there. I’m now starting to branch into Newcastle with the ‘Stag and Hunter’ and ‘The Wicko’ Pub.” The song writing process comes naturally for the blues and folk singer, particularly with his new single ‘Apollo Bay’. “The way I write songs is I just play chords

Local performers Benje Travis, left, and Roy Rose and then I just mumble words until it just comes in,” Roy laughs. “But in the chorus part, I just found myself singing Apollo Bay. I’ve been to Apollo Bay, so I just thought I’m going to run with a holiday theme. “It’s not literally about Apollo Bay, it’s more just about taking a break. Things get pretty flat out and fast paced sometimes, so you just got to not take things so seriously all the time.”
2017 brings in Roy Rose’s new EP, playing at the Tamworth Music festival in January, and playing at the Meatstock festival in New Zealand in February. Keep connected with Roy Rose via Facebook at www.facebook.com/royrosemusic and Red Earth Records at www.facebook.com/ redearthrecords

THE most recent competition of the Seabreeze Beach Hotel Fishing Club was held on the weekend of December 3 and 4. There were 72 nominations and despite the rather favourable conditions it seems the fish were a bit hard to come by with only 56.2kg being presented to the Weigh Master. Grant Rowe took out the Pearl Perch at 1.115kg and Morwong at 790gm and was named Angler of the Month Outside with four species. His son Jack caught the biggest Snapper, for a junior, with a 655gm specimen. Another junior was Riley Styles who landed a Pearl Perch at 1.070kg and earned Junior Angler of the Month Outside with two species. Other winners in the Outside section were Geoff Bryant with a Snapper at

A GROUP of Kempsey champions have fought their way to the top. Zen Chi Ryu martial arts students from Kempsey have recently represented New South Wales in the Australian Martial Arts Championships. Eight students and three instructors made the trip from Kempsey to Homebush Bay’s Olympic Park in Sydney on December 3 and 4 and came home covered in glory. The students were up against competitors from all around Australia and New Zealand. “I’m very proud,” said Debbie Swanson, coach and manager at Zen Chi Ryu. “I’m very fortunate that I have really talented students.” The students have worked hard all year competing in previous tournaments at regional events in Port Macquarie, Coffs Harbour and Newcastle. From there the students competed in the NSW State Titles and were selected in the NSW team to compete at the Australian Titles. Zen Chi Ryu’s Australian Champions are Chelsea Peet, with her demonstration with Troy Kinny, Tristan Vogler, Liam Kinny and Zac Bell. Chelsea is also the Australian Champion for Sumo wrestling in her age division and was runner-up in her Point Contact and Freestyle Sparring. Tristan Vogler is also an Australian Champion in his Sumo wrestling division. Alan Bell, Amalie Illife and Emma Bell also were placed in the top five in Australia. To be placed in the top five in Australia means students now qualify to be on the Australian team for 2017 tournaments in New Zealand, Japan or Sri Lanka. Accompanying the Zen Chu Ryu squad and also performing as officials for the nationals were Richard Kinny, Karen Vogler and Debbie Swanson. And it wasn’t just the students taking home
THE best surf lifesaving talent from Mid and Lower North Coast Branches was on show last weekend at the 2016 NSW Interbranch Championships held at The Lakes SLSC. Mid North Coast Branch moved up one position on last year’s results to finish eighth while the small Lower North Coast team produced some promising results and claimed 11th spot. Sydney were crowned Interbranch Champions, only 16 points ahead of their northern rivals Sydney Northern Beaches. While Central Coast, Hunter and Far North Coast rounded out the top five. A similar story for both Mid and Lower North Coast Branches as they took advantage of the drafting available as part of the Interbranch Titles which ultimately helped them in the pointscore and exposed them to mentoring from experienced athletes. Port Macquarie youngsters lead the Mid North Coast team with Finn Askew finishing second and third in the U15 Male Surf and Iron respectively. On the beach, Jaydn Rossiter took silver in the U13 Beach Flags and Ava Sinclair made the top four in the U14 Beach Flags. Also on the sand, Mia Bales (WauchopeBonny Hills) put in solid performances in the U13 Sprint and Flags to finish third and fifth respectively. “Usually our branch has a pretty small team and we don’t often have the opportunity to fill team so, being able to use the draft and having some of our kids stay in region, we’re building for the future,” said Mid North Coast Coach Melinda Cockshutt. Lower North Coast drafted NSW Champion sprinter and former Sydney Northern Beaches Captain, Michael Kember who won the Open Beach Sprint and placed second in the Open Beach Flags. Forster’s Alicia Williams finished third in the U15 Female Beach Flags and was the highest achieving Lower North Coast athlete.

Church, council praised NSW Touch Football has congratulated both the Diocese of Lismore and St Agnes’ Catholic Parish and Port Macquarie-Hastings Council on the joint announcement this week in relation to the future of the Tuffins Lane sporting precinct. “This announcement certainly is a nice Christmas present for the local community users and one that both Father Donnelly and Council should be pleased with,” stated NSWTA General Manager Dean Russell. “Over the years of coming to Port Macquarie, the NSWTA had been made aware of the generous community spirit of Father Donnelly and his leadership of the Church in this matter has again proved this description is beyond reproach.” The NSWTA has similarly been pleased again with the interaction of Council and in particular Mayor Peter Besseling with keeping the organisation across all developments in this matter. When asked how this new ownership and arrangement for the Tuffins Lane might effect the future of the NSWTA State Cup, Russell responded by saying: “The tender for the 2018-2022 State Cup will be released mid next year. It will again be an open and transparent process. This announcement would likely only strengthen the Port Macquarie bid.”
