A passion for change By SUE PATERICK A PASSION to create positive change within the community is what Kempsey Shire Council’s new General Manager, Craig Milburn, brings to the position. He believes working for Local Government is a good avenue for building better communities. “My new position as General Manager is a huge opportunity to work with Council and a community that want change,” Craig said. “I’m very excited about being here.” Craig grew up in the housing estates of Burnie in Tasmania so he is a down to earth bloke with a great love of the outdoors and nature. Apart from the challenge of the role, it was the Macleay Valley’s natural beauty and being close to family that lured him away from the beautiful Shoalhaven region on the South Coast of NSW. He was the Director of Finance and Corporate Community Services at Shoalhaven City Council for 4.5 years and has worked for councils at both Port Macquarie and Coffs Harbour. Craig is most proud of the staff culture he developed at Shoalhaven and is sure a good work culture and relationships are far more important than structure.
Page 7: Our luck is in
“The staff had a can-do attitude and supported each other and the community well,” he said. “They enjoyed coming to work and we accomplished a lot for and with the community.” Craig has been at Kempsey Shire Council for just a short time and starts each day visiting various Council departments to say ‘hi’ and is trying to get around all the work sites to meet with staff over the coming weeks. He wants to continue to build up the staff and utilise their skills and their passion for the local community. “What I like about regional councils is that an overwhelming number of staff live in the area, or their family’s do, so they have a stake in what happens because it can impact their own lives,” Craig said. He also wants to build a strong and open relationship with the community and Council, but acknowledges there will be differences. “It’s important to have good robust discussion, but not to attack the person,” he added. “It’s about discussing things in a fair and transparent way.” • Continued Page 7 Pictured: Kempsey Shire Council’s new General Manager, Craig Milburn

Ponies’ healing touch Possum and Mr T find a key to hearts, minds
By SUE PATERICK MANY time-worn faces smile adoringly at two mini ponies, as they move slowly from person to person in one of the luxurious lounge rooms at Macleay Valley House in Frederickton. More like a five-star resort with manicured gardens, sumptuous furniture, spacious private rooms, an in-house café and a stunning view over rolling hills and the Macleay River, it is an unlikely place to find ponies clip-clopping along the hallways. Possum’s shiny grey dapples contrast beautifully against Mr T’s glossy black coat. Feelings of anticipation and excitement fill the room as the ponies move quietly and calmly amongst the residents holding space for each person. According to owner, trainer and Equine Assistance Therapist, Michelle Wass, the ponies are able to gauge the need of the individual and respond appropriately. “Possum in particular just loves these weekly sessions and willingly leads me inside, but when it’s time to go she doesn’t want to leave,” Michelle said. It seems the feeling is reciprocated because residents react in the most astounding ways. Michelle has witnessed residents who haven’t spoken for years talking to Possum and residents who are immobile reach out to touch her. She has also seen residents with shakes and tremors calm down and find stillness in the presence of the ponies. Michelle believes all horses are intuitive and can pick up on the energy around them. “Possum has this amazing ability to sense people who have a need for comfort and connection and stops to be with them in her calm stillness,” Michelle said. “The support and nurturing that this pony gives to the resident in that moment is just mind blowing.” Horses are different from other domestic animals, Michelle explains, because they are always present and living in the moment. Many times through the interview I observed Possum with a resident and watched her close her eyes and drop her head onto their lap and allow them to stroke her face. Just as she allowed me to do. As well as Macleay Valley House, Michelle and her therapy ponies visit all the aged-care facilities in the shire including Bupa, Cedar Place, Vincent Court and Booroongen. She believes about 80 per cent of the residents in these facilities have some sort of rural background or upbringing, and sees their connection to her ponies. “When I bring the ponies inside the residents

various breeds and sizes. She has worked with horses all her life and during her 40 years as a riding instructor has recognised the incredible connection people have with horses, especially people with trauma, anxiety, depression, dementia and Alzheimer’s, and relationship and self-esteem issues. A Macleay Valley resident for 18 years, Michelle lives at HOOFBEAT FARM where her herd of horses roam free. To learn the necessary skills to become an Equine Assistance Therapist she has studied with the Equine Psychotherapy Institute in Victoria. Founder, Meg Kirby, has created a model based on Gestalt Psychotherapy, Buddhism, and Equine Education. Michelle has completed the Foundation Course and is now studying advanced modules that cover subjects such as Working with the Child and Adolescent, Trauma, and Drug and Alcohol Addiction. Michelle and her ponies also visit the Macleay Valley’s schools and her farm is open to people for group or individual sessions with her remarkable horses. For more information check out HOOFBEAT FARM on Facebook, email xtrailshell@ hotmail.com or phone 0408459647.
Like most Macleay Valley House residents Win Brown just loves it when the ponies visit because they are quiet and beautiful and love cuddles can connect through touch, sight, feeling and go back into beautiful memories of their past,” Michelle said. “These can be calming, joyful, warm and supporting experiences for the residents to move into, as it opens up many wonderful stories.” Michelle and her ponies have been visiting Scout Sport Quattro Mobility Scooter $

LETTER WEEK OF THE

History points to July 9 as better ‘Australia Day’ THIS country that we abide in was discovered by a Dutchman seafarer William Dampier around 1644 and was the west coast of a land he named Terra Australis and this was later changed to New Holland. The east coast of this land was mapped by James Cook in 1770 and he claimed the land in the name of the Monarch of England and called it New South Wales. The name AUSTRALIA was popularized by the explorer Mathew Flinders. The first time that ‘Australia’ appears to have been officially used was in April, 1817, when Governor Lachlan Macquarie acknowledged the receipt of Flinders’ charts of Australia from Lord Bathurst. In 1824 the British Admiralty agreed that the continent should be known officially by that name. The first official published use of the new name came with the 1830 publication of “The Australian Directory”. It took two referendums in 1898, 1899 before the states could agree to form the Federated States of Australia and a new constitution was
signed by Queen Victoria on July 9, 1900, which is referred to as Federation Day and a nation was legally born. The Federation of Australia began with a peaceful democratic process and we became only the second country to vote for its independence, the other being Switzerland. Though the constitution was signed on July 9, 1900 it did not take effect until January 1, 1901, when the constitution became “Supreme Law” under which the Government operates. Logistically we are a federation of states but within a legal minefield as the states are still independent sovereign states with direct access to the Monarch of another country via the State Governor Generals. The question is should July 9 become Australia Day / Independence Day and replace the Queens Birthday which is at different times in most states? This year the second Monday in June for four states, October for Queensland, September for WA. Rob Cannon Port Macquarie

Thumbs Down TO the residents who keep bagging the flying school at Aldavilla. It is a great asset to our community and economy. My husband and I have stopped to talk to these students in our local supermarket often. We welcome these most fine outstanding young men who are always courteous and respectful toward us, and most interesting. We took my son in-law out to see our beautiful airport and these students on Australia Day Weekend and once again he met up with and was very much impressed with the flying school and the students. And as for the noise they often fly over our home in West Kempsey and are always really quiet. Thumbs Up Thumbs Down is your chance to have your say. ornate headdress etc., today. So why may I ask are people so narrow minded, about who wears what, where and when? I just can’t fathom it. I can understand that our clothing nowadays is more practical and comfortable to wear, I just don’t understand how we got to where we are today with gender divisive dress codes? Who were the fun police that decided we couldn’t be creative with how we dress anymore? For some people, their dress is the only way they can express themselves. Was there some formal legislation that came in which said men can’t wear skirts unless they’re in the Scottish Pipe Band? It’s crazy! According to Wikipedia, by the end of the Victorian Era, due to a phenomenon the English psychologist John Flügel termed “The Great Masculine Renunciation”. Skirts were effeminized. “Henceforth trousers became the ultimate clothing for men to wear, while women had their essential frivolity forced on them by the dresses and skirts they were expected to wear”. Fast forward 150 years and now we spend endless of amounts of time and money arguing over and enforcing gender divisive dress codes at schools. Apparently if we don’t distinguish between genders from birth, with a dress code, we are going to end up with a whole heap of sexually depraved cross-dressing men? OMG! Does this make me a sexually depraved cross-dressing female, because, to be completely honest, I prefer to wear pants?
TO participants in Saturday’s Park Run along the break wall and Town Beach. Participants were running fast and hard, ducking and weaving between walkers and other runners with no regard for anyone but themselves, the clock, and their heart rate. I was hit from behind by one runner as he passed me; run into by a woman coming towards me, nearly ripping my arm off as she did; tripped by a boy with his dog on a lead; nearly skittled by a man running as he pushed a baby in a stroller in front of him, using it almost as a bulldozer as he negotiated his way between every person on the track; and frequently bumped or grazed by runners as they tried to squeeze between me and walkers and runners from the opposite direction. The path was very crowded and it isn’t big enough for ordinary walkers and those Saturday morning athletes who apparently have no regard for the safety and comfort of anyone but themselves.
Thumbs Up THANK you to the guy at Inspiration Paint Store, Lake Road who kindly opened a dried-on paint lid (from a tin of paint I hadn’t purchased there). He even mixed and re-tinned the contents for me - and I wasn’t purchasing anything. That’s good business sense!

HAVING lost all interest in the constant drivel that is mainstream TV, I’ve finally hooked myself up with Netflix. Obviously, there is just as much drivel available on Netflix – you can just be more discerning about which drivel you chose to consume. I personally have a thing for movies based on true stories - the history, the architecture, the furnishings, the culture, the food and the period costumes draw me in. I’m hooked! It all fascinates me, but this last couple of weeks viewing, it has got me thinking and doing a bit of research. Skirts have been around since prehistoric times, an animal pelt tied around the waist with a belt and were worn by men and women. All myriads of fashion came and went over the centuries until… The French and Industrial Revolutions saw the beginnings of changes for the dress code of men and women and the Victorian Era saw the preference for a more sober style of dressing. Did you know that it wasn’t until the mid20th century that it became common place for men to wear sombre coloured trousers and suits, rather than brightly coloured skirts, jackets, stockings, long hair and make-up. Some men even wore high heeled shoes? Who cares and why am I going there? I’ve just got to say – to coin a phrase by Sheryl Crowe - Isn’t it IRONIC!!! It was quite normal for people – males and females, young or old, straight or gay to wear whatever they wanted to. In fact, it was abnormal for any man of stature in the community not to wear a skirt, dress coat, tunic, toga, robe, dress and all the adornments and accessories that go with it. In many ways the same stands today. Show me a judge, a priest, a pope, a lord, a mayor, a scholar who doesn’t wear his robes, chains,

“ For the first time in my 20 years in IT I had to tell someone that there was “
absolutely nothing I could do. It was very traumatic.
Locals stung in ‘IT ransom’
Firms pay to have their own data files unlocked
Port Macquarie IT expert Steve Laws, of Home and Office Computer Solutions
DIGITAL extortionists using ransomware to lock up computer data have ‘stung’ three Port Macquarie business owners for almost $30,000 recently. An accountancy firm was forced to pay $25,000 in hard-to-trace bitcoin to have its files unlocked, while a medical specialist paid $1800 to retrieve patient files, and an auto parts store owner $3000. A fourth case involved a share trader who paid a ransom of $800. Ransomware is usually embedded within a harmless looking email. Once the email is opened, the malicious software disables the computer’s antivirus protection and any backup systems, before locking up its files with an unbreakable 512-bit digital encryption key. With the data held ‘hostage’, the attacker demands a ‘ransom’ in return for the key that will release it. Three of the four victims were clients of Port Macquarie IT expert Steve Laws, of Home and Office Computer Solutions. He believes other businesses have also been stung. The IT expert warned that backing up data to an external USB drive will not stop ransomware attacks. “The only way to guarantee your data is protected is to use a Network Attached Storage system, which is a small file server that uses
encrypted usernames and passwords,” Mr Laws said. “It can only be accessed using the company’s unique encrypted username and password, which is not stored on any Windows machine.” Mr Laws urged business owners to have a reputable IT specialist conduct a thorough security audit to advise them on how best to protect their network and data. He said every computer user should use strong passwords and be vigilant in scrutinising each new email while it’s still in the inbox before opening it or clicking on any links it contains. Although the accountancy firm was not a client, Mr Laws was called in to assess the damage. “For the first time in my 20 years in IT I had to tell someone that there was absolutely nothing I could do,” he said. “It was very traumatic.” It took him six days to determine the scope of the attack, help to arrange the bitcoin payment and secure the encryption key that finally unlocked the data. What’s even scarier is there’s no guarantee the key will be sent once the ransom is paid. “Many companies have been left out of pocket and with no way to access their files,” Mr Laws warned.

Cinema protest ABOUT 50 Macleay Valley residents with placards raised were outside Kempsey Shire Council (KSC) last Thursday (February 15) to show an A Current Affair journalist just what they thought about the proposed Kempsey Cinema project. Slogans like ‘$4 million of public money to Gowings - No Way’, ‘KSC ignores strong public opinion’ and ‘We want the Bandbox’, left no doubt to the crowds’ sentiments. Organiser of this peaceful protest, Renea Rootes, said she contacted A Current Affair (ACA) over the proposed cinema. “Council’s role is to look after the community and fix our roads, pools and sporting fields,” she said. “We have the Bandbox with a 360degree revolving stage on crown land and we own it, so it could be a community-run cinema.” ACA couldn’t confirm a date when the episode would run but hoped it was this week and said to look out for promotions. Back in November last year KSC voted five to four to support a four-screen Majestic cinema complex in the Kempsey Central Shopping Complex, and the allocation of $2 million in accumulated reserves to match $2 million in Federal Government grant funding. Under a new arrangement Council decided to enter into a Voluntary Planning Agreement (VPA) that would involve a one-off contribution and no further liability for the costs of constructing and operating the proposed cinema complex under the previous Public-Private Partnership (PPP). Council is also waiving any development fees.
Be fire ready WHEN you live in the bush, that first whiff of smoke makes you nervous. To look out toward the horizon and see it shrouded in smoke sends you rushing to check Fires Near Me on the Rural Fire Service (RFS) website. For me on 40 hectares of mainly trees west of Kempsey it was worry on a still night and the following day last week when smoke was so thick it stung our eyes. According to Lachlann Ison, NSW Rural Fire Service Zone Manager for the Lower North Coast, the fire was first reported in the afternoon on Wednesday February 14 in the Port Macquarie/Hastings shire. It was thought the blaze may have started on Molly Milligan Road at Marlo Merrican in the Kumbatine National Park (NP). Crews for both the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) and the RFS worked on the fire, and a dozer was called in from Kempsey to clean up containment lines. At the time of writing this, the fire was contained but it had scorched about 92 hectares of Kumbatine NP. The Mid North Coast is currently in its Bush Fire Danger period so fire permits are needed. However, permits are automatically suspended when the fire danger rating is very high or above.
Drone funding a real lifesaver DRONE Investment Works: Drone technology funded by the NSW Government has once again assisted in the rescue of two swimmers, this time at Port Macquarie. This is the second time in recent weeks where a drone has been used by lifesavers in a rescue, following a rescue at Lennox Head last month, which made international headlines around the world. This cutting-edge technology is again proving to be of great assistance to our lifesavers. The NSW Government provided Surf Life Saving NSW with $430,000 to trial the use of drones by surflife savers for shark surveillance this summer. The rescue took place at Town Beach with assistance from off-duty lifeguards. While the lifeguards were on rescue boards, the drone hovered overhead to ensure there were no other people in difficulty in the water. The drone provided much needed assistance in the rescue of the swimmers. Since the program started, there have been more than 1,000 drone flights clocking up more than 330 hours flight time with 90 drone pilots trained to date. The drones are located at Town Beach in Port Macquarie and also at Byron Bay, Suffolk Park, Lennox Head, Sharpes Beach, Ballina and Evans Head.

CANBERRA CONNECTIONS With Dr David Gillespie Federal MP for Lyne
NEARLY 2,000 children across our electorate will benefit from a more than $400 million preschool funding boost announced by the Federal Coalition Government. $2.52-million for 1,998 local preschoolers will ensure they have access to 15 hours a week of quality early learning in the year before they start school. We know that a quality preschool education is essential for laying the foundations for successful learning, including transition to full-time school and future school success. The Federal Coalition Government has extended the National Partnership Agreement on Universal Access to Early Childhood Education. Between our $427.8 million this year and $440 million in 2019 for preschool as well as our overhaul of the childcare system and $2.5 billion extra investment, the Federal Coalition Government’s commitment to early childhood education and care and is clear. The challenge we now need to confront is that for all of the funding support, more than a quarter of children enrolled for preschool aren’t attending for the full 15 hours.
Origins are far from bizarre I READ a few years ago about the world beardgrowing championship and my thoughts turned to the word bizarre. Why would a person enter the world beardgrowing championship? Depending on the amount of stubble, that person might have to start beard growing a year or so in advance - and then what type of beard would be acceptable? Would the beard be a goatee type, or perhaps the full and flowing beard would do. Would moustaches qualify? My memory tells me the championship was to be conducted in Norway. I don’t know if they still have it. But what does beard growing have to do with bizarre? I’m glad you asked. Years ago Basque men were identified by their beards, which were different from those elsewhere. Spanish and Portuguese locals called them by the Basque word for beard, which was bizar, which in Spanish came out as bizarro. The word came to mean bravery even handsome, although I think a man can be brave without being handsome. The Merrian Webster people say that you can be brave while at the same time being “conventionally ugly”. Then the Italians and the French adopted the
my
LAURIE BARBER
word, before it came into English. Its history was a bit on the odd side. For instance, the French seemed to use the word bizarre earlier than the Spanish, so was the word that we now use spelt originally as bizzarro? It still meant brave. According to my big dictionary, the first written use in English came in 1648, meaning brave or departing from the ordinary or a man of spirit. In 1643 Edward Herbert writing in Life said “her attire seemed as bizarre as her person”. Bizarre was used to describe flowers, such as tulips and carnations. For instance, in 1753 Ephraim Chambers said bizarre was a term used among florists for a particular type of carnation, which had its flowers striped with three or four colours. But we still use bizarre, only we give it a meaning of strange. The Spanish use the word to
mean brave or generous. Don‘t blame me; that’s what I read in the book. Some words have taken off from bizarre. For instance bizarely, bizarraness and bizarrerie, but we hardly ever use them. In 1884 a woman was described as bizarrely beautiful. I reckon she must have been a good sort. Then we come to bizarro. This word also means unconventional, with a slightly different slant, but we rarely use it. None of my dictionaries include the word bizarro or bizzarro. It is obviously still seen as part of a foreign language. But it can mean something slightly different from bizarre, something with no explanation of how it happened. Some dictionaries describe it as slang. Several versions have appeared in comic books, such as Superman. It was included in Superboy in 1958. This was created by Otto Binder and George Papp. Many shops use it also. Some spell it with a double z. But would you buy a pizza from bizzarro pizza? Don’t answer that. I’m sure they sell top-quality pizzas. Years ago, the federal treasurer, Wayne Swan, used it to indicate that this country wasn’t doing too badly compared with the rest of the world, but I’m not sure what he was trying to say, lauriebarber.com; lbword@midcoast.com.au.
FROM THE MAYOR A weekly conversation with Mayor Peta Pinson In the past few weeks I’ve had numerous opportunities to get out and about to meet people from right across the community, and it never ceases to amaze me the wonderful things I see during my travels around our region. It’s not only meeting people, having a chat and listening to their stories that I enjoy, it’s taking in our natural environment and constantly being reminded that we really are (as my walking mate says) ‘living the dream’. We are so lucky to have such a diverse range of parks and open spaces to enjoy and when you combine this with our wonderful weather, living here
is pretty hard to beat. Council staff put a lot of effort into maintaining our parks, gardens and open spaces, and it really is up to all of us to help keep them in pristine condition for everyone to enjoy. Seeing litter, cigarette butts, dog poo or illegal graffiti is not nice for anyone, and it’s not only locals that are using these spaces, they are also a major drawcard for visitors and tourists, so it is really important that we keep them clean and safe for all. We love our dogs, and they must be on a leash in public places, unless you are at one of our off-leash parks or designated beach areas … and always remember to take your doggy doo-doo bag with you. If you run out, you can get replacement bags and
pmhc.nsw.gov.au doggy leash bags at Council’s Customer Service Centres for a nominal fee. If you need to know where our off-leash areas are, visit Council’s website, which also has a handy interactive map showing our region’s parks, playgrounds and reserves. You can even search all our walking trails, outdoor fitness gyms and community halls. The maps also tell you what’s at each location so you can plan your trip. So my challenge to you this week is to take the time to get out and enjoy one of our many parks or open spaces … who knows, I might see you there. Have a great week, Peta.

Jackpot! ... twice By SUE PATERICK IT seems the Macleay Valley was the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow last week with two lucky Lotto locals winning a total of $2.5 million in just three days. Kempsey’s first millionaire is still celebrating her $1.5 million win in the $21 million Saturday Lotto Superdraw on February 10. According to NSW Lotteries’ spokesperson Matt Hart, the winner, who wished to remain anonymous, knew she had the winning numbers on the Sunday and didn’t sleep much that night until she spoke to him on the Monday morning. The excited woman had gathered her family around the phone to hear her winning news. “Woohoo!” she cried, when her prize was confirmed. “It’s just so hard to believe!” Matt said the whole family were thrilled, and they had not being able to stop laughing and celebrating since the happy winner discovered her good fortune. She will use her windfall to pay off her mortgage and set up her family for the future. Kempsey’s newest millionaire purchased her winning 18-game QuickPick at the West Kempsey Newsagency in Elbow Street, West Kempsey. She shared that Saturday’s division one win with 14 other winning entries across Australia. Each delighted person won a division one prize of $1.5 million. West Kempsey Newsagency owner, Julie Sutton, said the outlet was on a high from selling its first division one winning entry in 15 years. “We’re very excited,” she said. “It’s great to see one of our customers win
and we wish them all the very best with their prize.” The following Tuesday, February 13, proved 13 was lucky for some when a local hardworking tradie learnt he had won $1million in the previous Monday night’s Lotto draw. The tradie, who also wished to remain anonymous, was hard at work with no idea he was a millionaire when Matt rang him with the good news. “Holy dooley!” the tradie exclaimed. “Wow! “That’s amazing!” While it will definitely change their lives, the tradie reckoned he wasn’t quite sure what to do with the money and will sit on it for a while. He did admit that he might take a break from work and keep his hands clean for a while. The lucky man held the only division one winning entry across Australia in Monday’s
Lotto draw on February 12, and purchased his winning entry at Gladstone Newsagency & General Store in Ashton Street. He explained he was a regular Monday and Wednesday Lotto player and always used his favourite numbers. Gladstone Newsagency & General Store owner, Robyn McNaught, said the outlet was thrilled to have sold its first division one winning entry in more than a decade. “It’s nice to have a division one win under our belt and hopefully there’s many more to come for our customers,” she said. The Lotto’s division one winning tally has now reached 277 so far this financial year, including 91 won by NSW Lotteries customers. Given there has been two mammoth Lotto wins in the Macleay Valley, I’ll race you to the closest newsagency because, as they say, things come in threes.

GM out to meet, greet From Page 1 Another important task for Craig is to talk up Kempsey. “The region has so many positive aspects I don’t want it talked down,” he said. With his wife Karen’s family all living at Port, plus a daughter and two grandchildren, moving to the Macleay Valley was like coming back to family. For relaxation Craig likes to renovate old houses and is looking for a fixer upper in Kempsey that he and Karen can make their own. The couple are also looking forward to discovering the region’s beaches, national parks and villages. “I can’t wait to meet people and explore the Macleay Valley,” Craig said. “We’ll spend a lot of time doing that.” On their journey of discovery Craig and Karen also plan to taste test local restaurants and cafes. Helping Craig manage a busy Council is the new Director Corporate, Steve Mitchell. Steve Beasley is the interim Director of Operations and interviews to fill the position permanently will be held in the next two weeks. The new structure of a General Manager and two Directors was recommended in a report from LKS Quaero; a company Council employed last year to undertake an organisational review.
New ferry SMS service
RESIDENTS of the North Shore, and other regular users of the Settlement Point and Hibbard Ferries will benefit from a new ferry SMS notification service that is being introduced by Council. The service will send SMS messages to subscriber’s mobile phones when the Settlement Point or Hibbard Ferries are experiencing delays or service disruptions, and provide regular updates on expected ferry restoration times. The new SMS notification service will commence on Thursday, March 1, 2018.

SMSF’s – Getting Collaborated Advice Having come back from another annual SMSF National Conference, it would have to of been the 1st one when I couldn’t get enough of the technical sessions. Usually you would find after 3 days of hearing all the strategies, technical changes and acronyms in the industry a little exhausting. Even so with the 2016 Budget changes now fully into play, common discussion was just how these changes not only effected those already with SMSF’s , but those considering to take control of their own retirement plans with an SMSF. How could everyday Australians be confident of taking control of their super within the regulations & rules with such complexities? Whilst I love the opportunities and freedom SMSF’s offer people to take control of their future, I could understand the fear of the unknown for both current and potential members. There are currently 1.1 million people who have taken the “Selfie Route” to control their future retirement with their SMSF. The responsibilities, obligations and restrictions are extremely important. They need to be worked through along with the ever-changing platform of technology and their investments understood. Recognising the complexity around regulation also raises the question of the support you need from professionals with the appropriate education, qualifications and experience within the SMSF industry. All SMSF’s look different and have different family structures, objectives and outside influences, so no one strategy or technical application will work for every single person or SMSF. So, who are the professionals that would assisting you in forming your retirement and estate planning goals. This starts from the stages of setup through to wealth building, retirement and estate planning. Generally, it’s your Accountant, Financial Planner and Lawyer that all bring something different to your SMSF table. Your trusted advisers have to be willing to have conversations and collaboratively work together with your best interest, whilst still maintaining independence effectively giving you, our mutual client, the most advantageous outcome specific to your goals. The SMSF conference facilitated professionals from all over Australia who all agreed and recognise the importance of continuing to engage with each other to provide our clients the most comprehensive and effective advice. At Maven Advisors we have a network of professionals that we trust and engage with, ensuring our clients are always receiving the best collaborated advice possible. Pictured above - some of the faces and activities from last year’s Comboyne Show. This year’s two-day show is on February 24-25.
Comboyne ‘show stopper!’
By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC THERE’LL be a little bit of old and a little bit of new at this year’s Comboyne Show. In fact this weekend’s 81st Comboyne Show will have more packed into its two-day program than any of its previous shows. “This year there’s about 116 events at the show, which is more than we’ve ever had before so it’s going to be a very exciting weekend,” said Ray Lance, Show Publicity officer and long-time member of the Comboyne Agricultural and Horticultural Association. “Last year it was a traditional show, but this year we have taken elements of a traditional show and added some new things. “We’ve got the traditional heavy horse challenges and then we’ve got an agricultural
display which is more modern, so there’s a bit of old and a bit of new.” Thousands of visitors will be able to check out the popular championship dog show, the poultry pavilion, equestrian events, art shows, home baked goods, fermented food demonstrations, craft beer, photography, agricultural displays and trade markets, fair rides, raffles, and so much more. “The local politicians will open the entertainment for the day with the Farmhouse Challenge,” said Mr Lance. “That will be very entertaining because they might be dignitaries before they start, but they’ll probably lose a bit of the dignity before the time they finish this challenge.” Due to popular demand, all pavilions, exhibits, stallholders, and food vendors will
be open on both Saturday and Sunday for this year’s show. “We hope to have thousands of people walking through the gates this year,” Mr Lance said. “If it’s a good day it will encourage people to come up to Comboyne. The weather is a bit cooler up here, the scenery is magnificent, everything is green at the moment, and well worth the trip.” Mr Lance says show visitors must ‘take in’ the giant pumpkins. “If you haven’t seen the giant pumpkins, you ought to,” he said. “They are huge! You need a few people to lift them they are that big. “The committee has really worked hard on this year’s show and we hope that people from Port Macquarie and all over will come see what this little town has to offer.
“I’ve been apart of the committee for 30 years and I’ve enjoyed it very much. We are lucky to have Rodney Fisher as the president of the Comboyne Agricultural and Horticultural Association because he has instigated a lot of new and exciting things, even goat racing, which we had a few years back. So we are always looking to evolve and give more to the community.” Take a leisurely drive out to beautiful Comboyne on Saturday and Sunday, February 24 and 25, and make your way to the Comboyne Showground, Showground Road, Comboyne from 8am both days. Admission is just $5 for both days for adults and under 16s free. Parking is free. The Comboyne Show will share their proceeds with the Westpac Rescue Helicopters.

All the Good stuff in our Community
‘We worship Almighty God, not a priest or a building’ QUESTION: I am very angry at the way some priests and leaders in churches have abused children. I am so upset I want to leave my church. Should I? ANSWER: Dear friend, I am also angry and ashamed at the way some of my fellow priests and church leaders have abused children who have been placed in their care and trust. To abuse innocent children is abhorrent to me and even more of an abomination to Almighty God. However we don’t worship a priest or a building, we worship the Almighty God and He has recommended we can do this best at a church with other fellow-believers. Let us not forget that Jesus loves the church.
STUMP THE PREACHER
A COUPLE of weeks back I had the honour of attending the 80th birthday of Mal Rathbone. At the party Mal was honoured by his two sons and grandchildren. One grandson who is a Christian singer wrote a special song about his granddad’s Godliness and another grandson stood and prayed over his Grandpa. I don’t think there was a dry eye amongst us. It was very special. Mal was born on the Shetland Islands, north east of Scotland. His father was a Church of Scotland minister. When Mal was 15, he was in England with

He called us His bride. Even though we have many failings and often our warts show, He still loves us and was willing to die on a cross for His friends both inside and outside the church. Paul, in writing to the Ephesians said these words: “Husbands, love your wives, just as
Christ loved the Church and gave Himself up for her.” (Ephesians 5:25) Now, how did Christ love the church? He gave His life for it, for us. That’s how much Jesus loves the church. I am sure He doesn’t always love what people in the church do and He would be weeping right now for the precious children who have been abused and mistreated by people in the church. When Paul wrote to the Corinthian Church, a church that had done some shocking things, he reminded them that it was all about Jesus – “For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and him crucified.” (1 Corinthians 2:2) I have prayed with several men and women

six years. On leave, back in England, he met Ella Brereton and romance blossomed. Despite Ella’s vow to ‘never go out with a sailor’, they married in 1961. Mal and Ella with two small boys moved to Australia, living in Adelaide and Melbourne before moving to Sydney where Mal became the CEO of the YMCA (Young Men’s Christian Association). Mal and Ella worshipped at Gymea Baptist Church for 30 years. Ten years ago they moved to Port Macquarie and joined Grace Church. Mal and Ella both love the worship and the presence of God at the Church. who have told me some shocking stories of how they were abused. I have wept with them. I vividly recall one young, newly married wife, who was unable to love her husband. She had been brutally abused by her father from ages 5 -13. As hard as it would be, she was encouraged to forgive that monster posing as a father. I will never forget watching this beautiful young woman clench her teeth and say: “I am determined to forgive.” If you have suffered from abuse, then the only way out is by forgiveness through Jesus at the Cross. Please note – incidents of child abuse must be reported to the police.

Local girls are kicking on If girls are “ interested in joining
“
all they have to do is jump online By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC DUE to popular demand the Football Mid North Coast soccer competition is opening up more options for female players in 2018. “Interest for girls-only teams is certainly growing,” said Justin McIntyre, Football Mid North Coast Club and Referee Development Officer. “We’ve noticed a growth in interest over recent years, especially with the younger female players who are really bidding for more female teams and it’s great to see.” So far planned is an under 12-14 girls competition to be played on Friday nights, a girls Miniroos under 7s and under 9s competition, and hopefully with more interest there will also be an under 11s all-girls competition. “The Miniroos teams we had last year in the Port area were really popular with the all-girls under 7s and under 9s competitions and that’s likely to happen again this year,” Mr McIntyre said. “We are still trying to get numbers up for the under 11s, so hopefully more girls get on board.” For the older girls, the under 16s and under 18s competitions will be on again this year as well as the High Performance competitions, which still have some vacancies in the under 17s and under 20s Women’s premier league. “We stretch from Bulahdelah up to Stuarts Point so our zone is pretty large,” said Mr McIntyre. “Clubs are currently working on putting teams together before the season starts so if girls are interested in joining all they have to do is jump online to our website, and if they want to play at a particular club, they can find it through that link.” The season takes place from early April until the grand finals, which are held in early September. There are many clubs to choose from all around the Mid North Coast. Local Port Macquarie clubs are Port Macquarie FC, Port Macquarie United, and Port Saints FC. For more details on 2018 registrations and to find a club head to the registration information page on the FMNC website - http:// footballmidnorthcoast.com/2018-registrations/ The NSW government has also started an Active Kids initiative where students receive a $100 voucher on registration. Visit the above link to register and get the $100 rebate.
Former Wauchope juniors battle out W-League finale THE pathway between junior soccer hopefuls on the Mid North Coast and elite Australian clubs is well signposted. The W-League grand final took place on the weekend with two of our local girls playing - Caitlin Cooper (Sydney FC) and Rhali Dobson (Melbourne City). Both are former Wauchope juniors. (Melbourne City won the final 2-0). The talented duo are proof that the elite pathway is working. “Rhali was just five when she started playing out at Wauchope,” said Justin McIntyre, Club and Referee Development Officer from Football Mid North Coast. “She played in our representative system and in the seniors competition for 14-15-year-olds. “Rhali was at the Newcastle Jets for 9 years and then she got a contract with
Melbourne City last year for this season. She’s now 25 and plays mid field/winger. “Caitlin also played for Wauchope in her early years and then moved to the Central Coast and then to Sydney. She’s 30 now and is a defender for Sydney FC.” Not only have these women made it to the top tier of Australian women’s soccer, but they have also paved the way for many other young girls wanting to take the same road. “There’s definitely a pathway here on the Mid North Coast for girls who want to play club but also want to play representative soccer,” explained Mr McIntyre. “We’ve got our High Performance competition in the women’s premier league, which we’ve got under 14s, 17s, and 20s.
“The girls play every second week in Newcastle so they can get spotted by the Newcastle Jets and other teams. So the pathway is there for them and it’s actually easier now more than it’s ever been to be able to get spotted and picked up by a club.” The Mid North Coast has had quite a talent pool with other soccer players making their way to the top such as Angus Thurgate from Port Saints, FMNC Representative, and Newcastle Jets, and Hannah Jones from Port Saints, FMNC Representative, and Junior Matildas. There are many more who can be found on the Zone Honour Board at the Football Mid North Coast website http:// footballmidnorthcoast.com

Port sailing double-header a busy program PORT Macquarie Sailing Club held their monthly double header on Sunday, consisting of the 5th race of the summer series in the morning, a BBQ lunch, then the 5th club championship race in the afternoon. It was another sparkling summer day, with the morning race sailed in a lightish south-easter and the last of the run-in tide, and the afternoon race sailed in a slightly strengthening breeze with the run-out tide increasing as the race progressed. In the catamarans in the morning race, Frank O’Rourke on Dino took his grandson for 2 laps of the course before returning to the beach. Rob Barwick on Drift thought the race must have been shortened, and followed Dino to the beach, to be informed by the starter there was still a lap to go. Dave Winter on Spica had got ahead at this stage and beat Drift to the finish line by 3
seconds. Spica also took the handicap win over Drift. The monohulls are a challenge for the handicapper with so many new boat/skipper combinations, which helps explain why the yardstick and handicap finish orders for the morning race are the same. Steve Bohlsen and Steve Couch in Big Bang were 1st ahead of Phil Lillehagen and Jane Cooper in Elmo, Simon Gandy and his brother Phil in Voyager, Ziggy and Matilda Ewart in Pandemonium, and Elsa Gandy and Isla Smith in Sailfish. Caitlin and Jaiden Bourke went out in Flying Fish but failed to finish. The afternoon’s Club Championship race for catamarans saw the fleet well spread out. Here again, the yardstick and handicap finish orders were the same. Dino took the win ahead of Drift and Spica.
Paul Robertson and Warren Sykes in Flembouyant were first on yardstick in the monohull division in the Club Championship, ahead of Elmo, and Big Bang. Sailfish was next with Elsa beating her Dad in Voyager by 13 seconds, and finally, Geoff Smith in Jupiter. Elmo took the handicap win by 5 seconds over Sailfish, then came Big Bang, Voyager, Jupiter, and Flembouyant. Next weekend the club is hosting a Tasar class TT (Traveller’s Trophy – lots of visiting Tasar crews), with 3 short races scheduled for Saturday afternoon, and 2 races on Sunday morning. The 6th race of the summer series will still be on with a 2pm start. Help is needed for both days of the TT as well as duty for the club race.
