Dementia study ground-breaker Locals closer to unlocking mental mysteries

So, from everyone’s perspective, it’s vital to try to keep people with dementia living at home, where their surroundings are familiar and they have community supports.

A LOCAL university study evaluating an innovative approach to the care of people living with dementia could have national implications. HDRC (Hastings District Respite Care) Services has commissioned a graduate clinical psychologist - Andrew Hanna - to undertake the three-year study in conjunction with Southern Cross University. Thought to be the first of its kind, the research aims to validate HDRC’s communitybased Montessori Approach to Dementia program by measuring its long-term impact on participating clients, their carers, and staff. The study will also be used to refine the program and its delivery. Announced by the CEO of HDRC Services, Raymond Gouck this week, the study coincides with Dementia Awareness Month in NSW. The incidence of dementia on the Mid-North Coast is third highest in the state. “With dementia, the challenge is keeping the person engaged in any given activity,” said the study’s principle supervisor, Dr Jim Donnelly, a psychologist and lecturer in psychology at SCU’s Coffs Harbour campus. “If they can be engaged consistently and supported in regaining skills, they’re more likely to function independently. There is evidence that by fostering this independence and improving their wellbeing, the Montessori Approach could delay the need for costly full residential care. “So, from everyone’s perspective, it’s vital to try to keep people with dementia living at home, where their surroundings are familiar and they have community supports. HDRC Services’ program could well have significant financial implications for funding aged care and respite services in the future.” The not-for-profit organisation, which also provides disability services, has already had remarkable success with the program. When adapted to a dementia setting, Montessori teaching methods incorporate signs, visual cues and other memory-enhancing techniques to enable people with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia to unlock memories and rediscover talents, skills and interests stolen by the condition. The ground-breaking program is also supporting carers. Besides getting a break from their caring role, they are learning to implement the Montessori Approach at home to create a more dementia-friendly environment. Having rejected traditional models of passive respite care, HDRC Services’s dementia and disability programs are tailored to each individual. Its local day care centres are warm, welcoming spaces and each day is an enjoyable and rewarding experience for clients and staff alike. In one area, a small group might be engaged in a drama session, while in

another a team member may be one-on-one with someone practising a craft skill thought lost. With dementia, the challenge is to understand where the person gets ‘stuck’ trying to complete everyday tasks. Under the Montessori Approach, remembering how to make tea may only require signs saying ‘tea bags’, ‘cups’ or ‘spoons’ on

kitchen cupboards or drawers, while setting the table becomes straightforward when the plate, knife and fork are outlined on the placemat. “For someone with dementia, learning new skills or relearning old ones is very satisfying,” said Ms Julie Dunn, who manages HDRC’s dementia services at its Port Macquarie,

Wauchope and Laurieton centres. “Putting in place the supports they need at our centre or at home gives them confidence to undertake daily tasks, and contributes to their quality of life and connection with the community.” Aged 80 and a HDRC client for six years, Ted Williams puts it simply: “They treat you like an adult.” Ted’s wife and carer, Leone, says Ted has found new purpose and enthusiasm for life. “I think Ted’s Alzheimer’s has actually improved since the Montessori was introduced,” she said. “I thought he’d had all but lost his handyman skill, but he is now building wooden stands for the model aircraft he’s started making.”

Local silence on greyhound ban THE outrage continues, justifiably, on the Baird decision to close down the greyhound racing industry, totally disregarding any real consideration of the impact to the voting community either morally, socially, or financially.

Norfolk injustice I ALWAYS believed our society is a democracy based on the principle of a fair go for everyone. My recent visit to Norflok Island makes me think what our Australian Government, via Canberra bureaucrats, is doing to the islanders is tyrannical. When the descendants of the Bounty mutineers came to Norfolk Island in 1856 Queen Victoria issued an order in council to establish Norfolk Island as a ‘district and separate settlement’. In 1901 when our states became a federation, Australia was made caretaker of the territory of Norfolk Island. In 1979 Australia granted Norfolk Island status as a selfgoverning territory. The islands adopted their own laws, finances and taxation and established a legislative assembly. They did not pay income tax but had a system of indirect taxes based on

Readers should not forget that when the Closure Bill was finally presented to the NSW Lower House of Parliament, our local Member, Mrs Williams, together with the vast majority of her party colleagues,

voted with the Government to support the bill. This was without any consultation with the electorate. I wrote to Mrs Williams on August 30 expressing my disgust at her and her party’s stance on this issue.

Since then no acknowledgement, let alone a reply, just the deafening silence. However, this will not be forgotten. Anthony J. Moy Port Macquarie

the ‘user pays’ system. A fuel tax, compulsory health insurance for adults, a cattle registration of $340 per beast per annum, a 12% GST on everything including food. They did not have the dole and they have a virtual zero crime rate. The legislative assembly’s administration finances, the Public Account prior to the 2008 global financial crisis, had an annual income of around $52m, with tourism the major industry. With the global decline in tourism after 2008 that annual income fell to $26m. I am told the Islanders then asked our government for assistance which was granted. I am told they now realise that was a mistake, they should have tightened their belts and toughed the decline out. The Canberra bureaucrats had the excuse to declare Norfolk Island as ‘unsustainable and needed to be controlled by Australia’. On May

8, 2015 Norfolk Islanders voted overwhelmingly to retain selfgovernment but this referendum result was ignored by Australia. On June 18, 2015, the Norfolk Island Legislation Amendment Act commenced with annexation completed on July 1, 2016. I do not have access to the economic data bureaucrats may have, but surely a population that has self-governed for 37 years and still wants to stand alone should, in this 21st century be allowed to retain their heritage, culture and language and recover from a one-off global financial crisis which was not of their making. If they do need some help it would be short term and a pittance compared to other aid we send to nations where more millionaires live than the citizens in Australia. Surely our population of 24 million can hold a handout to a population of 1500 people living on a fantastic

holiday destination for our citizens, instead of acting like tyrants. I was also told the Australian Government Administrator has imposed a form of censorship on the island’s community radio station banning the discussion of items of reform and requiring his approval of other items before they are aired. This would not be tolerated in Australia; whatever has happened to free speech on Norfolk Island? London based Australian QC Geoffrey Robertson, well known for his TV series ‘Hypotheticals’, is assisting the Norfolk Island People for Democracy Committee with their complaint to the United Nations Human Rights Commission. Are our local members for Cowper and Lyne aware of this heavy-handed injustice or are they just going along with it? B Thompson Port Macquarie

SPRING has sprung! We have beautiful sunny days with a smattering of showers and gusty fresh winds. Roll on summer! It’s time to get the bodies ready to be exposed for the upcoming beach days ahead. I have to say, the beach has to be one of my least favourite places to be. Don’t get me wrong, I love looking at the waves rolling in, swimming in salt water as well as hearing and smelling the ocean. There is just one major barrier, the stuff between the car and the water - the sand! You can have it! As we are steaming towards summer I have to say I was taken aback last weekend to find Target is already set up for Christmas! Seriously? It is bad enough having to endure the commercialised Christmas hype during November and December - why on earth do we need it pushed down our throats for mid-September? It’s actually a clever marketing ploy. Getting the Christmas display happening a couple of weeks early captures the target market - the kids! That’s right. Why not get the kids thinking about what they want for Christmas now? They’re on holidays, looking for stuff to do, so why not start making the Christmas wish list. You never know, if they’re bored enough they may even suck mum and dad in to spending now and extract even more at Christmas! Nice work Target. Not!

Spirit of river is awakened They will light a five“metre fire sculpture that creator Denni Scott Davis said represented ‘Guwiny Guthun Bitha’ - ‘Spirit of the River’

By SUE PATERICK

THE diversity of the Macleay Valley - its spirit, culture, lifestyle and experiences - are what the Macleay River Festival is celebrating this Saturday, September 24. ‘Guwiny Guthun Bitha’ or ‘Spirit Belong to the River’ sums up the festival’s essence in the language of the Dunghutti nation, the valley’s traditional owners. The fun kicks off with a paddle on the wide Macleay River, as it curls around Kempsey’s heritage houses and rolling hills of green farmland dotted with contented cows. The Save Our Macleay River committee is holding the event, which begins at 9am from the river end of Forth Street behind Woolworths. Paddlers will dip their oars in the river’s reflective surface up to Euroka Creek and back. Registration will be held onsite at 8.30am on the day, but for more details go to www. saveourmacleayriver.com The water theme will continue throughout the day with a Save Our Macleay Flotilla at 11.15am, a raft race between 11.30am and 1pm and Marine Rescue demonstrations from 2.30pm. For landlubbers a raft of talented musicians will be performing on two stages to keep toes tapping.

The reggae-infused Gambirra Mob will have toes tapping at the River Festival Rebecca Gambirra, lead singer of the Gambirra Mob, is from the Yolngu people in northeast Arnhem Land. She is a musician, songstress, performer, painter and an Indigenous cultural educator. Her potent 10-piece band is a fusion of psychedelic roots, big harmonies, funky grooves, world reggae, and epic dub sounds, inviting wonderful musicians to join the mob. “The band’s message reflects social morality and celebrates unity in cultural diversity,” Rebecca said. “Our mission is to connect, reflect and accept.” Apart from epic bands, the river festival will also feature puppets, a circus playground, a karate display, a holistic hoop workshop, bellydancing goddesses, Yarrahappini Choir, and

Laughs and fun during a previous raft race. This year’s race begins at 11.30am from the Riverside Park Boat Ramp.

huge range of food and market stalls. As river ecology is the theme for this year’s festival, Kempsey Shire Council staff and the community collected plastic bottle tops and containers over several months to make into colourful artworks. Local schools and artists embraced the theme and turned what was rubbish into recycled art sculptures, just one of the many art installations to be exhibited during the festival. The fiery Kozmic Fuzion will end an amazing day. After their performance, they will light a five-metre fire sculpture that creator Denni Scott Davis said represented ‘Guwiny Guthun Bitha ‘ - ‘Spirit of the River’. Denni began her work with communities and the arts after beginning Slippry Sirkus in 1996,

using digital storytelling, music, dance, visual arts, circus and theatre. Denni and the Slippry Sirkus team share their skills with communities to promote creativity, and expression, and to strengthen community wellbeing. Over the past 20 years Denni has worked with the Macleay Valley community, and across the broader and remote reaches of Australia providing access, opportunities and experience through the arts and creative industries. The Macleay River Festival is a free, familyfriendly, community event open to all ages. It will be held at Riverside Park, Kempsey on Saturday, September 24. Gates another Rotary triumph

THE COWPER REPORT With Luke Hartsuyker

Federal Member for Cowper

By CHRISTINA PARKIN

Project coordinator from the Rotary Club of Port Macquarie Sunrise, Malcolm McNeil, is pictured during a recent working bee installing the refurbished gates of the Historic Cemetery

Service groups are a tremendous way to get people to actually contribute constructively to their community complete the broken link and join the pathway in William Street at the northern end of Owen Street. So, how does a busy local architect get involved with a service club? “I joined Sunrise Rotary three years ago as I felt it was the right time and the breakfast meetings appealed as my days get so busy,” explained Mr McNeil. Malcolm’s father was also in Rotary and he has memories of accompanying him to working bees building a bus shelter at the back of Port Macquarie Primary School, the Observatory building and installing the gardens in the south west corner of Rotary Park. With a big back yard behind their family motel in Burrawan Street, the Rotary float used for the annual ‘Carnival of the Pines’ sat there, along with a portable stage that was used in many community events.

A RESPONSE to reading criticism of the condition of the Historic Cemetery gardens in May 2015 led the Rotary Club of Port Macquarie Sunrise to approach Port Macquarie Hastings Council to see what they could do. “Council welcomed us with open arms,” said Malcolm McNeil, Project Coordinator for the Historic Gates refurbishment. The Council’s landscape architect, Rebecca Doblo, shared her proposal that was awaiting approval from the NSW Office of Environment and Heritage. It had been a protracted process and Sunrise Rotary came along at the right time. The original process included the manual removal of 36 tonne of river rocks and concrete lining the terraces as it was believed that unmarked graves were potentially in the embankment facing Gordon Street. With an opportunity for Council to retain a younger ‘work for the dole’ workforce, the refurbishment of the heavy cast iron gates then became the focus for the club, with their galvanisation and installation completed during a working bee on Sunday, August 14. “I just love being part of Rotary where you can work with other community minded people to achieve something worthwhile, whether it be at home or abroad,” says Mr McNeil. “I feel there is a new wave coming through with Council now actively encouraging community groups to offer their initiatives to Council to work in partnership together. “The work Rotary Sunrise did at Tacking Point Lighthouse, led by Neil Black, allowed the Council to monitor and trust that community groups can have great capability and capacity.” The Rotary Club of Port Macquarie Sunrise are currently working on a project on the headland over Town Beach where they have designed, built and installed new seats. The next phase is where they link up with the great work done by the Lions Club at Gaol Point and construct a new pathway that will ultimately

“Like my father, I love getting involved with local projects and feeling part of the community,” explains Mr McNeil. Malcolm can cite the Sandcastle, Watermark, Quayside Mantra, Sunrise@Nobbys and many other multi-residential buildings bearing his architectural mark, but he has also been active in designing the new wing of Rotary Lodge, which is about to commence construction. “Service groups are a tremendous way to get people to actually contribute constructively to their community and the partnership between Lions and Rotary to assist the patients using Rotary Lodge is a great example of looking after those in need.” If you’d like to get involved in working bees for community projects, you can visit the Rotary Club of Port Macquarie Sunrise website at www. sunrise-rotary.org.au or www.portmacquarie. nsw.lions.org.au

GOING to hospital can be an unsettling and upsetting time, but staff can make the world of difference when it comes to getting through the experience. Amongst the doctors, nurses and administration staff there is group of noble volunteers who contribute to a more comforting environment in hospital. The Pink Ladies (and Pink Men) are an amazing group of unsung local heroes who attend hospitals across the Cowper electorate to volunteer, care and comfort patients. The men and women of the Pink Ladies direct patients and visitors around hospital campuses, sell raffle tickets, toiletries, books and handmade gifts. They arrange flowers, refresh vases for patients, take library trollies around wards to patients who aren’t mobile, they buy toiletries, papers and magazines from hospital kiosks on behalf of patients, arrange patient hairdressing and collect information folders for the staff. The Pink Ladies help out in most areas of our region’s hospitals, including in the hydrotherapy pool and helping patients and visitors to and from their cars. These are just some of the tasks that teams of volunteers undertake, but just as important is the role these men and women play in soothing and comforting patients and conversing with those who are confined to their wards by illness or injury. The Pink Ladies is a branch of the United Hospital Auxiliaries of NSW. The Port Macquarie branch has 140 members and they clocked up more than 15,000 hours of voluntary work at Port Macquarie Base Hospital last year. In rural areas, our hospitals benefit greatly from the partnerships formed between community groups, volunteers and hospital staff. There are volunteers in the Port Macquarie area who have been a part of the Pink Ladies for more than 50 years. There are 12 mid north coast branches with almost 600 members, which also fundraise for the region’s hospitals. So far the branches have donated more than $800,000 to hospitals at Port Macquarie, Coffs Harbour, Dorrigo, Macksville, Bellingen, Kempsey, Wauchope and Taree, while volunteers completed more than a combined 770,000 hours of work at these health facilities. Money raised by Pink Ladies branches has been used to purchase a range of equipment for mid north coast hospitals including, wheelchairs, a paediatric emergency trolley and patient lifters.

Archers target world champs By SUE PATERICK THERE is no ‘shooting an arrow I know not where’ for the Macleay Valley Archers (MVA), with six members competing in the International Field Archery Association World Championships in Wagga Wagga next week. On Saturdays the sun-dappled light of the Tamban State Forest is filled with the whoosh of arrows flying from all styles of bows, as the MVA practice. A soft thud as each arrow sinks into the round black target, again, and again, is reminiscent of William Tell or Robin Hood. There are 554 archers, aged seven to 70, competing in the archery world championships from 16 nations, including Austria, Brazil, England, France, Hungry, India, Namibia and Wales. MVA member and National Archery Champion, Karen Smedley, said archers will be required to shoot four arrows at each of 28 targets per round for a week. This is 112 arrows per archer per day and it is estimated that over 300,000 arrows will be shot during the competition. Karen’s husband and fellow competitor, Alastair Smedley, explained it was a bit like golf. “You go in a group of four and walk from target to target,” he explains. “The distance of each shot ranges from seven to 70 metres.” After an opening ceremony on Sunday, September 25, shooting in the International Field Archery Association World Championships will be Monday through until Friday. MVA member and fellow competitor, Kath Hodgman, said to get match fit they have been shooting at the club mornings and afternoons every Saturday, plus practicing at home. Kath is the NSW Champion in B-Grade

Members of the Macleay Valley Archers, Kath Hodgman, Brett Hodgman, Garry Ward, Scott Bone, Karen Smedley and Alastair Smedley, practicing before the International Field Archery Association World Championships in Wagga Wagga next week and came second in the Australian Bowhunters Association Titles. Archery is open to young and old, and is divided into age-appropriate groups in grades of A, B and C. There are 39 cubs, 65 juniors, 23 young adults, 353 adults, 74 veterans and one professional shooting in the archery world championships in Wagga. “Twenty three per cent of the competitors are under 18 so it is a real family sport,” Karen said. Not every competitor is shooting with a

compound bow, some use long bows and others recurve, with or without sights. The Macleay Valley Archers use compound bows and a release aid because it is more accurate than holding the string with your fingers. Fellow competitor, Scott Bone, said the good thing about compound bows was that you could adjust everything. “The bad thing about compound bows is you can adjust everything,” he added, making the surrounding archers laugh like a family of kookaburras at dawn.

Garry Ward enjoys the friendship side of archery and likes going away to have fun and meet people. Archery can be as expensive as you can afford, but about $300 will get you started. To inspire people to take up archery, the MVA is holding a Come and Try Day on Saturday, October 15, at its clubhouse in the Tamban State Forest from 10am. Equipment will be provided. For more information or to become a member contact Brett Hodgman on 0408 480131 or email mv.archers@yahoo.com

PINSON – Not Mayor Dear Port Macquarie Hastings Residents, Following the recent Council elections on 10th September I wanted to reach out to say a heartfelt ‘Thank You’ to everyone who trusted me with your vote. I was humbled and honoured that you put your confidence in me by putting a number ‘1’ in the box next to Peta Pinson on the Mayoral ballot paper. While I didn’t win the Mayoral race I did achieve a substantial percentage (almost 30%) of the first preference vote and between candidate Sharon Griffiths and myself, we achieved over 42% of first preference votes in the Mayoral Ballot. A small further swing of 7% away from the incumbent would have given a vastly different result when preferences came into play. This great result could not have happened without all of the people who put signs on their property, came to hand out at pre poll, and on the day of the election. It takes people’s belief in what you have to offer to the Community and a commitment by them to volunteer their time and effort to make a result like this a reality. I want to take this opportunity to publicly thank everyone one of them who worked to get our message out to the PMHC community. There were also a small special group of wonderful people (you all know who you are) who joined the team early and offered so much blood, sweat and tears to make my campaign the success it was. Without your tireless dedication we could not have done what we did to shake the status quo. I believe that a clear message has been sent to the re-elected Mayor, Peter Besseling that not all of our Community has been satisfied with the leadership of the past 4 years and no doubt they will be scrutinising the newly elected Council on their future decisions. In closing let me say this is not the end of the campaign for me, rather it is just the beginning. I will continue to work for the Community on those issues and concerns that you came to speak to me about. I will continue the job I took up four years ago to hold our Council to account, however, from this day forward I will also make sure that I publicly highlight to you - ‘the Community’, the areas where I believe Council can improve its services, eliminate wasteful and illegal practices, and be more transparent in the way it deals with individuals and businesses in our Local Government Area. Respectfully Yours,

Peta Pinson

MAX GARLAND

How long have you lived in or around the Hastings? My wife Lorraine and I have lived in the Hastings area for nearly six years. As a family we visited the Hastings area on our annual holidays and liked it so much we decided to retire here. What do you love most about the Hastings? I love the climate and what it has to offer; the beautiful beaches and hinterland and the many opportunities for retirees. I enjoy the sense of community, which is very caring. Where do you work and what do you love about your work? I am retired after 40 years in education, but my life seems to be just as busy as ever. I have always enjoyed woodwork so I joined the Hastings Woodworkers Guild. The Guild has given me many opportunities to undertake projects for myself and others as well as learn new skills. I enjoy the camaraderie and banter of the members. What do you like least about your work? I don’t have enough hours in the day to complete woodwork tasks. However, having to clean up the mess of wood shavings during the day is probably the least enjoyable. How do you start your day? Start around 6.30am with breakfast on our back verandah while watching the many birds as they chorus in the garden. What do you do in your spare time? We try to spend time with our children and families who live in other parts of NSW. Apart from being a keen woodworker, I enjoy photography, gardening and travel. What are the achievements you are most proud of? My family! I am very proud of our children and what they have achieved. With woodwork, I am proud of the construction of four special outdoor table settings for the Palliative Care Unit at Wauchope Hospital. A small group of Hastings Woodworkers (including me) made the tables that are designed for wheel chair patients to sit up to the tables outdoors.

LOCAL Police Officers Honoured: Last week I had the pleasure of representing the Premier by attending a ceremony at Government House to honour the recipients of the Queen’s Birthday Honours as well as the presentation of Bravery Awards. Two such recipients from the Port Macquarie electorate were on hand to receive their awards. Mid North Coast Local Area Commander, Superintendent Paul Fehon received his Australian Police Medal for his 36 years serving in the NSW Police Force. Laurieton based police officer, Senior Constable Michael Dietrich was presented with a Bravery Award for rescuing two people and their dogs from dangerous flooding in 2013. It was indeed an honour to be at the ceremony as NSW Governor, his Excellency David Hurley presented Paul and Michael with their awards. They are two very fine police officers who always go above and beyond in the line of duty to protect our community. They are both well deserving of their awards and it was an honour to attend the presentation. STATE MATTERS

I HAD always thought Mr was a good honorific for men and Mrs for women, whether married or not, but other people disagreed, even though Mrs was once used for all women. In recent years a concerted campaign has been underway to use Ms for women, regardless of their marital status. The word Mrs can be traced to 1612 and it referred to mistress. But then the word had a gradual change and mistress developed connotations that some women disliked. My big dictionary says that in the 17th century, the form Mrs for mistress fell into disuse. In 1632 Ben Jonson wrote that a person wanted to marry an emperor’s daughter “for his Mrs”. Conditions were not as they are in the western world today and women did not have the status they now occupy. The big dictionary goes on to say “originally distinctive of gentlewoman, the use of the prefix has gradually extended downwards”. I think it means that anybody, no matter how humble, can have a Mrs these days. Some feminists, trying to find a word that defined women regardless of their marital status, sought a compromise between Mrs and Miss. They came up with the word Ms.

a minimum of three times a year in Sydney. Members may also contribute time to working groups and attend other events and consultations. Carers in our area do so much to help loved ones live more independent and fulfilling lives. The NSW Carers Advisory Council provides a strong voice to the more than 857,000 unpaid carers right across NSW. These four Council vacancies are an opportunity for someone with relevant experience to advocate for and speak on behalf of other carers. Aboriginal carers, ageing carers, carers of people with dementia, carers from a culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) background, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or intersex (LGBTI) carers and carers from rural and regional areas are particularly encouraged to apply. For information about the NSW Carers Advisory Council and how to apply, please visit www.facs.nsw.gov.au/reforms/carers/nsw_ carers_advisory_council or contact the Council’s Secretariat on phone 8753 9380.

REGIONAL Development Australia Mid North Coast (RDAMNC) has welcomed its new Chief Executive Officer, Kerry Grace. Kerry is a strong advocate of regional living. She returned to the Nambucca Valley with her family in 2003 where she established her business, Evolve Network, a values-based consultancy service. “With the city only a short flight away and access to online work, so many opportunities have been opened up to regional Australians,” Ms Grace said. “The quality of life, environment and lifestyle really make it a beautiful place to work and raise a family.” Kerry is a strong advocate of opportunities in education and economic development for people throughout the community, in particular Indigenous communities, youth and the ageing population. Kerry has a strong social conscience and an ongoing relationship with the not-forprofit, training and employment sectors. “In my role as CEO of RDAMNC I want to contribute to the organisation’s vision of a mid north coast that embeds a culture of innovation, opportunity, inclusion and economic prosperity,” Kerry said. RDAMNC is a voice and an advocate for the mid north coast region, linking all levels of government, industry and community. RDA is a joint Australian Government and NSW State Government initiative.

LAURIE BARBER

In 1952 the National Office of Management Associations, based in Philadelphia, decided to use Ms for all woman as a means of solving the problem of deciding who was married and who was not. “This modern style solves the age-old problem”, it said. The word took off and various businesses stated in circulars that women employees could use Ms instead of Mrs or Miss. A few people objected. Opinions differ on who came up with the word, or if anybody can really take the credit, or blame, depending on your point of view. In the early days of the word a fair amount of criticism prevailed, with people reluctant to use the word and critical of anybody who used it. American author Chrysti M Smith on a book called ‘Herbivore’s Feast’ says the proposal first came from a man, Roy F Baily, of Norton, Kansas. Baily said the word overcame guessing

whether a woman was married or not. Smith said the word was employed for the next two decades before the feminism movement picked it up. Other sites suggest the term was first used in ‘The Republican’, of Springfield, Massachusetts on November 10, 1901. “To call a maiden Mrs is only a shade worse than to insult a matron with the inferior title Miss”, The Republican said. Various others were known to have used the word. English author John Ayto concedes that the word is “originally US” but says the word can be confused with manuscript. I can’t imagine a man saying “I will be married next Saturday to a manuscript”. Stephen Murray-Smith, who died several years ago, said in his book ‘Right Words’ that a sensible answer would be to ignore all honorifics. “This sensible practice is increasingly being adopted in the United States and seems worthy of emulation,” he said. Some newspaper style guides say Ms should be used only if the woman requests it. Many men I know have become accustomed to answering to “hey you”. lauriebarber.com; lbword@midcoast.com.au

TAFE key to career passion KATHRYN Hines was 40 when she started a Certificate III in Early Childhood Education at Kempsey TAFE and 13 years later she has a job she loves in the profession and is planning her second master’s degree. Before studying, Kathryn had worked with children in a voluntary capacity for 20 years, alongside work at a bank and raising three children, but when her youngest started school, she started TAFE. “When I did the Certificate III in Early Childhood, the rationale was purely to have a qualification to help me as a volunteer playgroup facilitator; I didn’t have any other agenda but by the end of my qualification I wanted to do my diploma and bachelor,” she recalls. She undertook work placement at the Lower Macleay Preschool and stayed on as a volunteer until a job popped up. “The job just fell into my lap and I’ve been there ever since and loved it.” “But studying awoke a real thirst to learn more about children. I realised how much knowledge there was to learn and developed a real passion to find out more.” Kathryn didn’t waste any time, completing

SERVICE NSW is revising opening hours across the state to better meet customer demand during the busiest times of the day. Service NSW Operations Director, Tim Bostock, said the revised hours, being introduced from Monday, September 26, were based on customer visiting patterns. “Service NSW remains a customer focused organisation and the new trading hours better reflect customer demand,” Mr Bostock said. “We have examined ticketing and queue data from our network and have adjusted our operating hours so we can provide staff for when they are needed most. “Customer patterns have shown that the largest volumes for demand are during the peak lunch and after school periods, with only a small number of customers opting to complete transactions in store or over the phone during extended hours (7am to 7pm). “Having more team members available during peak times means we can serve customers quicker and more efficiently, helping to reduce waiting times.” From September 26, Port Macquarie Service Centre will be open Monday - Friday between 8.30am - 5.30pm and open on Saturdays from 8.30am to 12.30pm. In addition the Raymond Terrace Service Centre will be open Monday - Friday between 9am - 5pm and closed Saturday. The Contact Centre will operate from 7am to 7pm weekdays. Service NSW is continuing to grow with more than 25 million customer visits recorded in the last year. Of these 94 percent were made during 8am and 6pm, with similar patterns noted across Service Centres and the Contact Centre. Mr Bostock said in the three years since extended hours had been introduced only a small number of customers had taken up the extended offering.

I’ve only been in Port for a year now, so fairly new to this place, so it was amazing to see the support and engagement of the local community

Koalas better through Zumba

By Adam Roberts – Former Councillor, Port MacquarieHastings Council

By CHRISTINA PARKIN

A NEW volunteer to the Koala Hospital has come up with a unique way to fundraise for the care of her charges. Zumba© teacher and internationally acclaimed swing dance champion Krista Gilen is currently just one of 170 volunteers working at the Port Macquarie Koala Hospital. This local organisation does a wonderful job in rehabilitating the much loved and iconic native animals. However as the hospital receives no Federal or State funding, they need to raise approximately $500,000 per annum in order to keep operating. Krista came up with the idea of a ‘Black & White’ Zumbathon© fundraiser party – a 90-minute master class (with a performance piece in between) followed by a little after party during which door prizes are drawn and people can share their BYO food and make new friends.

The Rinse Cycle

Mick Feeney, tour guide with the Koala Hospital pictured with Krista Gilen and her donation cheque The event raised $1361.50 in a fun-filled party where participants dressed to impress with Michael Jackson black and white themed clothes or came as their favourite pop star. Zumba© Fitness is a series of simple and funky dance routines done to Latino and worldly beats, which can be done at your own pace. “The beat really motivates and the rhythm gets into your soul,” says Krista, who runs Zumba© classes of different fitness levels in many locations in and around Port Macquarie. “I’ve only been in Port for a year now, so fairly new to this place, so it was amazing to

see the support and engagement of the local community.” While Krista inspires everyone with her friendly encouragement and ‘can do’ attitude with her Zumba© classes, she is passionate about volunteering at the Koala Hospital. She would like to encourage others to consider giving some of their time to either helping as a koala tour guide, shop assistant or keeping the koalas’ enclosures clean and healthy. Ring Krista on 0432 935 799 and to volunteer for the Koala Hospital, phone 6584 1522.

IN the recent local government elections for the Port Macquarie Hastings area we had a total of 27 candidates put their hand up for an opportunity to represent their community in the role of either councillor or mayor. Three candidates stood for the mayoral ballot and 26 stood to be a councillor for the next four years. Peter Besseling was returned as mayor on first preferences with around 57% of the vote. Mayoral candidate Peta Pinson came from a standing start and laid a very solid platform for the future through her shock-and-awe campaign which saw her claw out an impressive 30% of the primary vote in the mayoral race on her first attempt. Some of the more prominent issues that were raised were a council plan for a 52.4% rate increase, council’s rate of delivery of key infrastructure, the $209 million in council reserves, illegal dumping, cultural issues within council and even suggestions that the planned rate rises were in fact ‘lies’. Whatever your view on some of the issues raised and who you believe to be right, wrong or otherwise, there’ll no doubt be plenty to talk about in the coming months as we see the new council communicate their position on all of the above. As we get our head around the results this week, a few points are very clear already. Groups secured most of the councillor positions again through above-the-line voting. The same group-voting-bloc remains and a largely unchanged council will sit their first round table in two weeks’ time. Hip hop workshop LOCAL students have been participating in hip hop workshops, leading to a performance at the Macleay River Festival this Saturday (September 24). Morgan Lewis, aka Morganics, an award winning hip hop artist from Melbourne, Sydneybased digital media specialist Finton Mahony and Bowraville musician Wire MC, began the ‘Making Tracks’ workshops at South Kempsey Public School and Kempsey High. Students are recording their own songs and shooting accompanying video clips during the two-week workshops. They will also gain insights into contemporary Australian hip-hop culture, learn break dance moves and create a dance routine to present at the Festival. The project, funded by Kempsey Shire Council, will see students perform alongside Morganics and Wire MC at the festival on the main stage at 10.45am. “It’s great being back in Kempsey. The kids are really getting into it they are telling Kempsey stories in the songs, beat-boxing, recording each other and rhyming up a storm,” Morganics said. “There’s a lot of talent here. We can’t wait for the Macleay River Festival to show what we’ve come up with. The film clips that will be made will be screened there and the whole mob will be performing on the big stage. It’s pretty exciting stuff.”

New Port amenities

CONSTRUCTION of the modern-designed facilities forming the amenities block and kiosk at Port Macquarie Town Beach North is well underway and starting to take shape. The facility embraces the iconic location and will be an asset for Town Beach and will include a kiosk, four unisex toilets and one disabilityaccessible toilet. Public expressions of interest for the lease of the kiosk closed last Saturday. It is expected that the new kiosk and amenities will be ready for the summer holiday season.

The magical, relaxed atmosphere of the Wildwood Festival

Wildwood magic returns By LIZZIE McLEOD IT’S only a week before locals kick back and enjoy one of the region’s most popular music events – the Wildwood Festival. This year the unique festival boasts an array of regional talent, including Newcastle local James Bennett. The 25-year-old describes his music as ‘mellow’ and often is compared to the likes of Angus and Julia Stone, Bob Dylan, and John Butler. He has just released his first (self-titled) album and can’t wait to play at his favourite festival, which he believes is all about the music.

“I love the Wildwood Festival because it’s one of the few festivals that’s actually about the music,” said James. “Most festivals people are just too drunk and out of control to even really appreciate the music, so Wildwood is really special to play at”. James has big things on the horizon and will be recording in America next year for a month, so stay tuned. He has worked with top artists such as Wendy Matthews, Jeff Lang, The Black Sorrows and Ian Moss – and is widely recognized as a performer with a ‘sky is the limit’ big future. Wildwood is truly delivering this year with the line-up also including Blue King Brown,

Claude Hay, The Lyrical, Mar Haze, and Montaigne. The Wildwood Festival will take place next weekend, on Sunday, October 2, at the Cassegrain Winery, 764 Fernbank Creek Road, Port Macquarie. Gates open from 11am. Tickets are selling fast so don’t miss out on possibly the best music festival of 2016. Tickets can be purchased from www.livetix. com.au and are $65 with kids under 14 free with an adult ticket holder. The venue is fully licensed. Vital funding for local preschools

Above left: The Belmore River Hall as it appeared in 2011 for its centenary celebration and (right) pre-1985

Hall still a local focus BELMORE River Hall hosts irregular markets on the fifth Sunday of a month and the event will naturally draw in the local community who love to catch up with neighbours and friends at the beloved site. This community support for the 105 yearold Belmore River Hall has finally been captured in a DVD of photos and historical information compiled by local resident, Trish Bennett. “The centenary event in 2011 was a fantastic day drawing many people linked to the community from far and wide,” explained Mrs Bennett. “I had put all the historical information, clippings etc in plastic sleeves but as the word got around, I’ve been asked for copies so many

times, that I have now produced a DVD as a keepsake. “It was a great day and even Tank Radio broadcast from the hall.” The hall was built by the Debenham Brothers, Robert and Fred, and designed by Mr J Morrissey. It was to be opened on the September 15, 1911, but was postponed due to a massive storm which saw the sinking of ‘The Rosedale’ ship off Smokey Cape where all lives were lost. “The hall has always been connected to ‘The Rosedale’ because of this tragic event. It was finally opened on December 8,1911 with a grand concert and dance,” says Mrs Bennett. “There were also celebrations for the switching on of the lights on July 31 in 1940, various events of the war years, the school centenary in 1967, the 75th anniversary celebration on September 20, 1986, when ‘The

MEMBER for Oxley Melinda Pavey has welcomed an additional $115 million in funding to make early childhood education more affordable for local families and reduce fees by an average of 30 per cent. Mrs Pavey said the NSW Government is committed to providing universal access to quality early childhood education. This funding will reduce preschool fees for four and five-year-olds and remove nearly all fees for children from Aboriginal and lowincome families at preschool. “This is fantastic news for local families with young children,” Mrs Pavey said. “This funding boost will deliver the largest single fee reduction in NSW history, making preschool more affordable so that more children will be able to participate in 600 hours – or about 15 hours per week – of early childhood education in community preschools and long day care centres in the year before they start school. “I know the 21 preschools here in Oxley make a big difference to the lives of our children. “This funding boost shows the NSW Government is serious about helping more families access early childhood education, especially for children from Aboriginal or lowincome backgrounds.” Starting in 2017, community preschools across the State who enrol children for at least 600 hours in the year before school, will receive increased subsidies from the NSW Government, enabling them to reduce fees for families. “Research shows that a quality preschool education for at least 600 hours gives children a head start in their learning journey,” Mrs Pavey said. “We want all children in NSW to enjoy the benefits of a quality early education, wherever they live and whatever their background,” she said.

SENIORS EXPO

Name change, but care remains ON July 4, 2016, Macleay Community Care transitioned to become part of Community Gateway, including staff, assets and current care packages. This was after Kempsey Shire Council resolved at its April meeting to sign a letter of intent to enter into an agreement with Community Gateway Inc that would ensure the viability of the aged and disability services provided through Macleay Community Care. Community Gateway Inc, originally auspiced by Wollongong City Council, has been offering similar aged and disability services in the Illawarra region for over 20 years. Council’s General Manager David Rawlings said that the decision had been the result of a lengthy business review process. “In 2015 the Australian Government implemented changes to aged and disability funding which prompted Council to conduct an extensive business modelling process to plan how the service provided by Council might adapt and ultimately remain sustainable in an increasingly competitive market. “Council’s key considerations throughout the process have been the retention of local jobs and the ongoing provision of service to the community. “The transition to Community Gateway stood out as the best option and means the staff have been retained by Community Gateway, services will be maintained and a strategic plan has been developed to grow the services in the Kempsey Region into the future.” Craig Thomson, CEO Community Gateway said: “Macleay Community Care has a fabulous reputation for delivering high quality services under a caring and supportive model. We are

excited to have the two organisations join and are eager to grow the service in the Region.” Anne Adams Director of Macleay Community Care said: “There are great similarities between the organisations with opportunities to learn

from each other to further improve services and support in both regions.” Macleay Community Care currently employs 21 staff, with nine fulltime, nine permanent parttime and several casuals.

SENIORS EXPO

‘Wheels’ still rolling on MEALS on Wheels Mid North Coast is a respected six decade old community organisation that has grown with the times and evolved to meet the changing needs of clients throughout our coastal communities. As most people know, Meals on Wheels provides meals for those over 65 who will benefit from the convenience of having tasty, nutritious cooked meals delivered to their door, or prepared ready for collection by the client themselves. People are often surprised to find out that Meals on Wheels is much more than just a meal delivery service and is becoming increasingly flexible to meet the ever-changing needs of their current and future clients. In the past, Meals on Wheels has been seen as a free charity service, however that is not the case and registered clients pay a subsidised and affordable price for each meal. This helps ensure the highest quality in both taste and nutrition, with a wide range of choices and options available. Through their large network of volunteers who deliver the meals, the invaluable service is also able to monitor the wellbeing of clients, should they need this as they get older. Where appropriate, the organisation is able to refer clients to other organisations that can offer a different range of services. This along with regular, nutritionally balanced meals, can make a significant difference by enabling the client to remain in their own home, rather than needing to enter residential care. Although staying in one’s own home is often seen as a preference, social isolation can become a problem. It is now recognised as one of the most destructive issues for older people, and is frequently cited as a root cause of failing health, including depression, which is often associated

with dementia. To combat this, Meals on Wheels Mid North Coast offers services aimed at reducing social isolation. The ‘Eating with Friends’ program is one such service. The program takes groups of older people out into the community for a group meal or morning tea. The service also supplies meal vouchers which are redeemable for discounted meals at selected restaurants and cafes in the local community.

Assistance with grocery shopping for older people who find trips to the supermarket difficult, is another invaluable service provided by the organisation. To contact Meals on Wheels in the Hastings about getting meals for yourself or someone else, or to enquire about becoming a volunteer call Port Macquarie on 6584 1463; Wauchope on 6585 2386; Camden Haven on 6559 8883 or Kempsey/Macleay on 6562 1544.

‘Friendly’ signage BORNE by a need to find affordable signage solutions to create Dementia Friendly business spaces was the reason behind founding new local business ‘Dementia Friendly Environments’. Dementia Friendly Environments offer a range of products suitable for both the home and business environments to make it easier for people living with dementia and other forms of cognitive impairment. Founder Scott Marsh, launched the business in June, 2016, as he found it difficult to find appropriate and affordable dementiafriendly business signage. “My business partner and I decided it was important for us and our business – Home Instead Senior Care - to go through the accreditation process to be recognised as a Dementia Friendly business in the Port Macquarie Hastings region,” said Mr Marsh. “A part of this was to have clear, directional and action based signage, such as exit signs on the back of doors and toilet signs with symbols as well as the use of words. “We weren’t able to source suitable signs that weren’t cost prohibitive, so I thought why not design it ourselves.” The business has already diversified its range with the inclusion of a large button television remote control and telephones. Modern, lightweight dementia-friendly dinnerware and drinkware are expected at the end of 2016. The range is available to review via the Dementia Friendly Environments’ website www.dfle.com.au, with signs available for $7.70; big button remote controls $35.30 and telephones from $44.95. For enquiries or to place an order contact hello@dfle.com.au or phone 0408 634 025.

Port Macquarie Taxis are looking to bolster their driving team.

We have a fleet of 24 vehicles operating 24/7, 365 days per year and are the only NSW Government accredited Taxi Service provider in the Port Macquarie Township. Payment is commission based and at the end of each shift you take home your pay based on a percentage of your take throughout the shift. Alison Fazzolari has an extensive sports background

Futsal is kicking new goals By CHRISTINA PARKIN MID Coast Futsal has only one ambition – to raise the level of skill of their young players to enable them to move in whatever direction their love of the sport will take them. Alison Fazzolari, with her husband, Nick, have channelled their love and passion for the sport into their Futsal business for the past six years. Mid Coast Futsal is affiliated with NSW Futsal/ Football, which is aligned with the Football Federation of Australia (FFA), the governing body of outdoor football and Futsal in Australia using FIFA rules (Fédération Internationale de Football Association). Alison has an extensive sports resume since her days of playing for the Women’s A League in Melbourne including a Hastings Community Services to Sport Award, a Commonwealth Sports Achievement Award and numerous achievements by the teams she has coached. “We are very passionate about the sport of Futsal,” says Ms Fazzolari, who also doubles as the Operations Manager. “As organisers, we provide a friendly safe environment for children, youth and seniors to have fun and exercise year-round in all types of weather.” The recent acquisition of Brazilian, Leo Fischer, as the full time head coach allows members of Mid Coast Futsal to benefit from the combined experience and skills of both Leo and Alison. Leo has recently coached at Galaxy FC on the Gold Coast, a feeder club for players from the north coast of NSW. With Leo on board, Mid Coast Futsal will begin offering their ‘academies’ of specialist training consisting of eight week blocks of 1.5 hours a session. Academy is for players between 6-16 years old who want to develop their technical ability, creativity and physical attributes that football and Futsal requires to reach a high performance in games. “The kids just love working with Leo and he has a special way of working them to get the best from them, too,” says Ms Fazzolari. Registration is opening on October 1 for the next Futsal season, including the Jacaranda Cup held during the summer, so go to the website at www. midcoastfutsal.com for more information or call Alison on 0412 191 923 or Head Coach Leo on 0411 501 744.

Girls catch on to rules By CHRISTINA PARKIN

SURPRISINGLY, AFL is the fastest growing sport for young women, with nearly a 40% increase in female AFL players in the last year. The north coast of NSW is catching on with the formation of a Northern NSW Youth Girls AFL team, who have played a few casual games and even played in the recent State Youth Girls Cup. The team comprises of girls from Manilla, Maclean, Grafton, Coffs Harbour, Kempsey and Port Macquarie who travelled to Gosford during the last school holidays to play the more experienced Bateau Bay, but lost. One of the recruits is Lauren Beasley, 15, who attends Port Macquarie High in Year 9. Lauren recently played as the only girl in her school team when her friend Jack got her a permission note. They won against Melville High and lost against Mackillop College in a recent gala day. “One of the Kempsey boys asked me if I could play before the game and he was a bit shocked,” says Lauren. Lauren’s brother and father are keen AFL players and her father also coaches the Senior Magpies. His fellow team member, Scott Dalton, is also the North Coast Academy of Sport Development Coordinator. Scott was asking for players to form a north coast girls’ squad, so Lauren thought she would ‘give it a go’. Lauren has also convinced her friends Larni and Shelby Grainger to try it out. “They were scared at first but then they loved it,” explained Lauren. “I like playing defence because I like to tackle people. “It’s faster than netball, it’s new and not like other sports.” Scott Dalton explained that the girls like the highly athletic nature of the sport and without the need for scrums, it is fast moving and with

Cows, Storm for the big dance NO matter who you barrack for in the National Rugby League, you must agree that this has been one of the most even and enthralling seasons to date. This weekend’s games no doubt will be blockbusters, but last weekend both games could have easily passed as grand finals. And what is it with the Cowboys and the Broncos? They have taken the ‘local derby’ to a whole new level. Every time they clash it is like another Star Wars epic. We thought last year’s golden point grand final could not be bettered. But then when they first met in 2016, in Round 4, again they went to golden point with the Broncos edging ahead. Then in Round 11 the Cows snuck home by a point 19-18. Last Friday night was again a classic. But as the commentators continually pointed out, the big winner was the Sharks. There is no doubt the Cowboys will be fatigued after that slugfest. The Raiders v Panthers clash was almost as enthralling. The game seesawed until late, when the Raiders finally edged ahead. As Your Local Independent has pointed out throughout the year, the Panthers deserve to do well. They have stuck with a long-term plan and it is now starting to reap rewards. Next year will be a very interesting one for Penrith supporters. OK, one more weekend before the big dance, but who will make it in 2016?: Sharks v Cowboys (Friday, September 23, 7.55pm, Allianz Stadium, Sydney): The Sharks have a number of pluses going into this game. As stated above, the Cowboys will be tired after they had a tough hit-out while Cronulla had the weekend off. The Sharks will welcome back inspirational captain Paul Gallen and big hitter Sam Tagataese. The game is in Sydney, well

away from the Cowboys’ Townsville fortress. However there is also no question that the Sharks camp will carry doubts into this game. After a very slick season they have struck quicksand late in the year, winning just two of their last seven games. Although they do have several things in their favour, Gallen and his men also know that the Cowboys are hardened finalists. They are the reigning premiers. They have a backbone of Maroon players who know how to finish a game in front. And the Cowboys have Johnathan Thurston. · Your Local Independent tips: Cowboys Storm v Raiders (Saturday, September 24, 7.40pm, AAMI Park, Melbourne): The tough old dog against the brilliant young pup! The Storm were always expected to do well this season, because they always do well. That is just part of their DNA, courtesy of Craig Bellamy.

He works his players harder than any coach, and gets the rewards. However most street-corner experts expected the Storm to be on the second tier when it came to the sprint to the line, with the likes of the Cowboys and Broncos well ahead. But two games away from the winner holding the trophy aloft, the Storm are $1.40 favourites to beat Canberra ($2.95) and $2.60 favourites to win the comp. The Raiders physically have more power and brilliance, however Melbourne have the toughest mindset of any team in the comp. They never blink first. They will take the Raiders out of Canberra, all the way to Melbourne and then they will take them out into deep water. Like the Panthers and the Sharks, the Raiders will be more formidable in 2017 because of this experience. But right now, the old dog is just too relentless. · Your Local Independent tips: Storm
