Nannas with energy By SUE PATERICK

EVERY second Tuesday the Knitting Nannas (Hastings-Macleay loop) meet outside Federal MP Luke Hartsuyker’s office in Port Macquarie because they believe climate change is already causing extreme weather events and threatening the future of their loved ones. According to one Knitting Nanna, Ellen Whelan, the group is concerned that both the Federal and State Governments are not acting fast enough to embrace renewable energies and move away from fossil fuels. “Our concern is for the future of our grandchildren and great grandchildren and the legacy they will have to deal with,” she said. “In 2050 when we are supposed to have zero emmissions my grandchildren will be young adults, possibly with children of their own, and unless something is done to stop using polluting fossil fuels they will be left to clean up our mess.” Earlier this month Knitting Nannas from Gloucester joined the Hastings/Macleay group to knit outside Mr Hartsuyker’s office, while a delegation of two met with him to explain their concerns. They wanted to see what he had in mind for the future of our planet. Fellow Knitting Nanna, Christa Schwoebel, said they urged Mr Hartsuyker to get behind the emerging large-scale solar, wind and battery projects. “We know you can’t build sizeable wind and solar farms in cities, but these technologies are suited to rural and regional Australia,” she added. • Continued Page 3

Nannas are knitting a future plan

Kempsey local John Graham remembers a time when life was slower and you didn’t have to lock your doors

Why we live here John reveals slice of our history

By SUE PATERICK SINCE the late 1800s John Graham’s family have lived in the Macleay Valley. He spent an idyllic childhood growing up with his 10 brothers and sisters in Middleton Street in South Kempsey, back when the pace of life was as slow and easy as a summer’s day. “We never used to lock the doors in those days,” John said. His Dad owned the last working draft horse in the valley, and kept his horses in a paddock near their house and in another paddock near the Akubra factory’s current site. John’s three elder bothers had horses too and also used to race bicycles from Kempsey to Coffs Harbour. When his Dad died in 1954, John’s Mum brought up the kids alone back in the days when there was no widow’s pension. To provide for her large family she worked as a cleaner five half days a week. “Life was hard but Mum always made sure there was food on the table,” John said. “We didn’t have many clothes or possessions, and I used to share a bed with two older brothers because houses were pretty small by today’s standards.” While life was tough John remembers his youth as being idyllic. The elder children attended West Kempsey Primary School and used to walk there and back from South Kempsey every day. Their route was along the train line.

“We had a few hairy moments,” John remembered with a chuckle. His younger siblings didn’t have so far to walk every day because they got to attend the newly-built South Kempsey Primary School. After the death of their father, John’s eldest brothers left school to work in a local sawmill and help make ends meet. John left school at 14 and went to work in another sawmill that a friend owned. “Luckily for me he saw I was good at figures and gave me a job in payroll,” John said. When not working he enjoyed camping on the creek at Crescent Head in a place they used to call Mosquito Flat. “It was only sand then and poor people camped there,” John recalled. “I loved it because it was such a carefree existence wandering around during the day and playing Bingo at the old surf-club hall at night.” When not camping John and his friends went to the movies on a Friday night at Kempsey’s beautiful Mayfair Theatre that was closed in 1980. “If you had a girlfriend it was even better,” he added. On Saturday mornings John played football for West Kempsey School and later played for Central Kempsey. “We never drank alcohol back then we just made our own fun,” he said. John recalled that Central Kempsey was one of the area’s strongest teams, along with teams

the Catholic Young Men and Smithtown. “There was a great rivalry in those days,” John said. He also used to box for his school and was coached by footie legend Lloyd Hudson. “It was a great way to keep kids off the streets and a great way to learn about life because Lloyd was a hard coach,” John remembered. “If you did the wrong thing you weren’t allowed back into the gym.” When John left his job at the sawmill he took up a position at Akubra in their payroll office and stayed there until he retired 39 years later. He is currently secretary of Warwick Park Racecourse and became involved back in the 1970s when Steve Keir’s grandfather asked if he would be interested in counting the money at the Kempsey races. John was the treasurer for 12 months before becoming secretary/treasurer, a position he held for about 31 years. His most exciting memory was during that first year when his nephew, Michael Flick, rode the winning horse in the Cup. Even though he has lived in the valley all his life John wouldn’t be happy anywhere else. He just loves the people and knows that if you do the right thing you will always have friends and support. “People make the effort to talk to you here and they are so generous,” John said. “We have a strong sense of community in the Macleay Valley.”

• From Page 1 “In regional towns large scale developments like this would create jobs in construction and maintenance and drive down electricity prices, so we want our elected politicians to take advantage of this opportunity.” At the meeting Mr Hartsuyker told the Knitting Nannas that he was pleased with the amount of rooftop solar in his electorate. However, they said they were concerned about his vision of how their region could be a part of a transitioning electricity market. The Knitting Nannas were also very disappointed to hear that Mr Hartsuyker thought renewables were ‘unreliable’ and that coal-fired power stations would be with us until 2050. This loop of Knitting Nannas formed after a Stop Adani Summit held in Port Macquarie in September 2017. They are also worried about another 10 new coal mines being proposed for NSW and the effects of large-scale mining in the Galilee Basin in Queensland. The Knitting Nannas will continue to gather once a fortnight outside Mr Hartsuyker’s office to urge him to embrace a faster transition to renewables. In reply Mr Hartsuyker said one of the Coalition Government’s highest priorities was energy affordability and reliability as we meet our international targets, while ensuring the lights stay on and prices stay low for Australian households and businesses. “The Coalition Government is taking a technology-neutral, non-ideological approach to energy policy,” he added. “To help with the integration of more renewables, the Government is working with the Australian Renewable Energy Agency on projects like pumped hydro in Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania and New South Wales.” According to Mr Hartsuyker, the jewel in this crown is the development of Snowy Hydro 2.0. He said this development will increase the scheme’s generation by 50 per cent and will add 2000 megawatts of renewable energy to the National Electricity Market, which is enough to power 500,000 thousand homes. The Knitting Nannas’ next gathering will be on Tuesday March 27 at 146 Gordon Street in Port Macquarie from 2pm to 3pm. “You don’t need to be a knitter or a Nanna to join us,” Christa said. “But you do need to care about the future.” So if this sounds like you then bring yourself, some knitting and a chair to the next gathering, and you will be warmly welcomed.

Cinema needs a re-think

I AM again writing in opposition to the Kempsey Council’s proposal for a Kempsey Cinema. I seem to get the opinion that council adamantly wish to go ahead with this project despite the opposition of a majority of ratepayers. Firstly, Gowing Bros have had this shopping centre on the market for sale for quite a considerable time. This hardly makes Gowings an appropriate candidate for an injection of $4million of public funds. Indeed inclusive of $2million of Kempsey Shire Council ratepayers funds. Secondly, Council conducted a survey several years ago asking its community if they indeed wanted a cinema. The overall response was ‘yes’, however it wasn’t asked of its community if a project such as this should have more importance than ratepayers funds spent on infrastructure such as roads. It was never asked nor discussed that KSC would consider giving a corporation $4million dollars to build this cinema. Before this cinema project goes any further KSC needs to conduct a more transparent survey outlining the true disclosure of the project and what projected benefits and assurances the community would expect. Who will directly benefit from this project?

What assurances are there that this cinema won’t fall flat on its face since most opinion that has come from Council, the Office of Local Government along with Gowing Bros is that it will not make any profit in the short term nor long term. KSC also need to re-assess its need for a cinema and perhaps consider options such as the Bandbox as a safer and fairer option utilising a building that is under-utilised and a KSC asset. Laundry really cleans up A BIG thank-you to Your Local Independent for highlighting the amazing community work that so many individuals and organisations do in this area. A recent example was the story on the Orange Sky laundy van, ‘Maddy’, and the band of local people who volunteer to do the laundry for homeless people across the Mid North Coast. In an age when we read so often that our society is becoming more and more self-absorbed it is heartening to see that this is not necessarily the case. Name and address supplied

The road has traffic of more than 200 vehicles-per-day, consisting mainly of people working in/ for Port Macquarie’s businesses. The Port Macquarie part of the road is, again, in such a state that it should be closed for all vehicles with pneumatic tyres – tanks and armoured personnel carriers excepted.

spend what time he has left to make some magic memories with those family and friends he will inevitably leave behind. Scrolling through Facebook I read about a woman’s experience trying to get her tubes tied as she didn’t want any more children. She couldn’t find anyone to perform the surgery as the doctors deemed her too young to make such a decision - she might change her mind in the future and want more children. It wasn’t until I started reading the comments, that I realised how widespread a problem this is. I naively thought I was just one of a few that suffered 6 years of excruciating pain and excessive blood loss because the doctors thought I was young and might change my mind about having more children. Really? I had four and there was a high risk (75% chance) of having a second child with a congenital heart defect. They even ignored my GP, who did not believe I was physically well enough to go through childbirth again and recommended I have a hysterectomy. Six long years my GP and I fought together to make that happen. In the meantime, I tried every contraception available, including having my tubes tied. I still fell pregnant then had to terminate the pregnancy because of my inability to carry another baby to full term, the risk of congenital defects and quite frankly, I did not want another baby! So, my question is: Who was the bright spark(s) who handed over our rights to make decisions about how we treat our bodies and when did it become okay to give people a literal deadline?

Thumbs Up TO the person who found my coin purse full of coins in the Dr Paws Vets car park and handed it into the office, and the Dr Paws staff for calling around to find their customer who lost it. Great team work from lovely people. My wife and I are very grateful.

WHEN did we become indoctrinated enough to believe that other people have the right to make decisions about what we can and can’t do with our bodies? I ask this question for a couple of reasons. Firstly, I recently found out that an uncle of mine has been diagnosed with stage 4 terminal cancer and been given months to live. Initially, he was going to fight the battle and take every manmade treatment known to mankind and hope for some extra time. Further testing has revealed the cancer is too far spread for treatment, so now the plan should be to sort his affairs and wait to die! I’m sorry, this is a totally crap attitude. How dare anyone put a deadline on another person’s life? My mum was diagnosed with terminal cancer in 1998 and given 6 months tops, with treatment. Her response was to tell the oncologists which direction they could shove their treatment, met all the palliative care people to put a plan in place for when she needed it, organise holidays to NZ, Bali and around Australia to see all the people she wanted to see before she got too sick and planned her own wake. My mum passed away in 2002 having lived 3 years longer than her given deadline – because she chose life! I’m not saying it was all roses. There were some pretty crap days. Mum just packed as much in to the remaining days, weeks, months as she could and she got 3 extra years! Most importantly – she didn’t lie around for 3-6 months waiting to die, which was her other option. She picked herself up and said: “Stuff you! I’m not going to have anyone tell me when I’m going to die. I’ll do it when I’m good and ready!” I’m hoping my uncle chooses to adopt a positive attitude, enjoy life to the fullest and

It was love at first sight 60 years ago By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC A LOCAL couple has certainly mastered the key to a successful marriage. Trevor and Joan Bennett from Port Macquarie have two big celebrations coming up – Trevor’s 80th birthday and their 60th wedding anniversary, both on March 29. “For us the key to a happy marriage is pulling together and doing things together,” said Joan. “It’s about working things out together and discussing things before we do them.” Trevor and Joan met when they were both working on the Werris Creek railway station, south-west of Tamworth. Joan worked in the refreshments room. “I think it was love at first sight,” said Joan. “I remember going to tennis with my girlfriend and I saw him with another mate, who ended up being our best man, and he just said ‘hello are you going to play tennis?’ and they came down and watched us. “He was a real gentlemen, when he would come to the door he would say ‘your hair looks nice’ or ‘your dress looks nice’.” The couple got married in Werris Creek in 1958 on Trevor’s 20th birthday. They then moved to Sydney in 1959 where Trevor worked on the Sydney railway until he joined the police force in 1960. Trevor became a CIB detective and was given the British Empire Medal for Bravery. Trevor and Joan had three children – Dale, Darren, and Donna. They moved up to Port Macquarie in 1974 and have remained in the same house for 45 years. They now have four grandchildren and three great grandchildren. “We became members of the Port Macquarie Caravan Club when we moved up and we just love the area,” said Joan. “When Trevor and I first met we would do many things together, but one of our favourite things to do was to go fishing. This region is so great for fishing and we still do it as much as we can. “Every Sunday morning now we drive down to town and we walk along the breakwater and it’s just such a lovely walk. Port Macquarie is such a beautiful place and we are lucky to share so much of our marriage here.” Trevor and Joan will be celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary and Trevor’s 80th birthday on April 7 at the Settlers Inn Hotel in Port Macquarie. “Our anniversary is over Easter so we decided to do it in April instead,” said Joan. “It’s going to be a double celebration and we are having relations come from Queensland and Newcastle so we are very excited.”

A reason to celebrate THE ‘Celebrate Jesus: Community Fun Day’ is a combined Wauchope churches event aimed at bringing the community together and open the conversation about Jesus. This is done a week before Easter so that if anyone is interested in knowing more, they can attend any church service on Good Friday or Easter Sunday to hear more about who Jesus was/is and what churches believe he has done for the world. The Celebrate Jesus Community Fun Day will be held on Saturday March 24 at Bain Park in Wauchope (along the main street of Wauchope, Oxley Highway, and across from Hastings Street). There will be kids games, face painting, henna tattooing, music, dramas and skits, teen activities, craft, school entertainment and colouring in competitions, balloon animals, clowns, jumping castles, hand massages and food. It’s all free. The contact is Peter Huxley (Ph: 0427813496 or email wauchpc@bigpond.com).

Plenty of interest in tree plan for koalas LOCALS have certainly answered the call to plant trees for koalas. The ‘10,000 Trees’ project was brought on by the NSW Forestry Corporation, which gave the Port Macquarie Koala Hospital 10,000 trees, with the aim to create koala corridors. “All of the 10,000 Tallowwood Trees that were given to the Koala Hospital are gone,” said Sue Ashton, media spokesperson for the Koala Hospital Port Macquarie and the Koala Preservation Society Australia Inc. “In just two weeks the Port Macquarie Hastings community from Kew to Kempsey got behind the project and the trees have gone to new homes, many on large acreages away from busy roads.” The Koala Hospital was specifically targeting land holders to try and create a corridor of trees linking to parcels of forest to create a pathway for koalas and other native wildlife. “As soon as the project was announced people came straight into the Koala Hospital to help out,” Sue said. “It just shows what a great community we have.” As apart of the project, the Koala Hospital gave the Kempsey Shire Council 1,500 trees and already 300 have been planted at Gills Creek – a council environmental project site - as well as hundreds of trees that were given to local schools. There are now just 500 trees left at Kempsey. Kempsey residents can still get their hands on the Tallowwood trees and are encouraged to contact the Kempsey Shire Council to arrange to get their trees. They can pick up the Tallowwood Seedlings from the Council’s Customer Service Centre on Friday March 23 between 9am-1pm. There is a minimum of one tray each, which holds 10 trees. “These trees will not only provide a safe corridor for koalas, but will also provide food and shelter for many other native wildlife in the area,” Sue said. Sue and the staff from the Koala Hospital couldn’t be happier with the results from the ‘10,000 Trees’ project. “The Koala Hospital wants to thank everyone who took the time to pick up trees and planted them,” Sue said. “We are hoping to do it again next year.”

Beating flu is in your hands BEATING the flu bug – it’s in your hands: A NSW Government campaign to tackle the flu season encourages people to get their jab early and clean their hands regularly to avoid a repeat of last year’s influenza epidemic. The 2018 flu campaign focuses on four simple measures to beat the bug, which affected more than 128,000 people in NSW last year. The ‘Don’t Spread Flu – It’s In Your Hands’ campaign has some straightforward messages on how to limit the spread of influenza and help save lives. More than 650 people died in NSW from influenza last year. It should be a wake-up call to the community to take steps to protect yourself and your loved ones. Like the campaign says it’s in your hands, so get your flu shot early, cough into your elbow not your hands, wash your hands regularly and stay at home if you are sick. The NSW Government will spend a record $22.75 million on immunisation programs in 2017-18, including $3.5 million for free flu shots to children up to five years of age. Flu shots are free for pregnant women, children up to six years of age and people over 65 years of age, Aboriginal people and those with medical conditions such as asthma, diabetes and heart problems. If you’re in limbo ... here it is WHEN a person tells you it’s in limbo, it could mean the cheque is in the mail. Then again, it could mean he’s in financial difficulties – between heaven and hell, so to speak. So, be kind to him. It happened to me, so I gave him the kid glove treatment, when I felt like I could do much worse. Between heaven and hell is a good definition of in limbo. The word limbo is occasionally used to mean something like nothing. I suppose it can mean I have no money or I am between jobs (which can also mean I have no money). Shakespeare used it in the line “as far from hell as limbo is from bliss”. Eliezer Edwards in his 1901 dictionary said it was sometimes used to denote hell itself. Webster states limbo means a supposed region bordering hell, considered the abode for the souls of unbaptised children and various people who lived before the time of Christ. It also states limbo means a state of people who are no longer wanted. It goes on to say a prison or other place of confinement. Collins states if you are in limbo you are in a situation where you do not know what will happen next. I am often in limbo. Limbo is also a West Indian dance where

my

LAURIE BARBER

you have to pass under a low bar while leaning backwards. Don’t try this if you have a sore back. Macquarie states that limbo is a region on the border of heaven or hell or the abode of unbaptised infants or a person who lived before Christ. Heinemann gives an example: “sharing holidays when I’ve got nothing to do; it’s like being in limbo”. Limbo goes back to the 14th century, but I can’t understand it. But later in the 14th century comes the comment “made of his holy men his horde in limbo” I don’t know what it means, either, but I did note that the “in” came before limbo as far back as the 14th century. My big dictionary says that limbo is a region supposed to exist on the border of hell as the abode of those who died just before Christ and of unbaptised infants. In 1483 William Caxton writing in The Knight

of the Tour said “she fylle in a darke and obscure pryson that was the lymbo of helle”. In 1857 Edmund Sears asked “if a spiritual body is desirable at all, why are the saints kept waiting for it in limbo?” Limbo was used as another word for hell. Ben Jonson talked about the “princes of limbo”. It was also used as another word for prison. Besant and Rice talked about “poets not yet in limbo”. Limbo was given some other uses. For instance, it was used as a type of anti-submarine weaponry. The first use in this context I could find came in 1655 when the Grenville “fired live projectiles from her limbo anti-submarine weapon”. But how about a South African name for a type of coarse calico? Then there are limbo-dungeons, limbo-like, limbo-lake, limbo partum and limbo infantum. In the meantime, I’m still waiting for the cheque. (Sheila Millsom wrote in with a few words on Sheila, especially a goddess who happened to have a most attractive bosom. This person was named Sheila of the Bosom, but, dear readers, I can’t tell you any more.) lauriebarber.com; lbword@midcoast.com.au

FROM THE MAYOR A weekly conversation with Mayor Peta Pinson You may have seen the progress we are making to improve safety and ease congestion on Hastings River Drive in Port Macquarie. This is one of our region’s busiest roads, with more than 18,000 vehicles travelling along it every day. Our current focus is at the Newport Island Rd intersection, where a new roundabout is under construction. If you’ve ever tried to turn onto Hastings River Drive at this intersection it can be extremely tricky, especially during peak times. That’s why this is a focus area for us, and should significantly improve safety once the roundabout is complete. As with any road works in a busy area we can expect some inconvenience, however I must say that as a

regular traveller through this area myself, even with the construction happening, if we slow down to the required speed limit it flows really smoothly, and there is only a minor delay. The new roundabout follows the work we completed in June 2016 at the top end of Hastings River Drive, between Gordon St and Aston St. With this work we totally reconstructed the road, including building a new roundabout and providing 2 lanes in each direction. I think we can all agree that this is a great improvement. We’re also planning for improvements between Boundary Street and Hughes Place, which is down towards the Airport, and construction will happen once we are able to get funding. We’re working really hard with our State and Federal Government

pmhc.nsw.gov.au colleagues to help us fund the many projects we know need to happen, as our rates only contribute a small amount to the cost. It’s a big job, not only looking at Hastings River Drive, but our entire busy road network, to ensure our roads are safe and we can all get around as smoothly as possible. It will take time, and there will be a little pain, however if we all look at the bigger picture and where we are heading with our road network it’s definitely worth it. We definitely do live in paradise, and as a Council we’re focused and committed to protecting what we have and love, improving our area in all sorts of ways … and helping us get around is just one of them. Have a great week, Peta.

Get ‘quacking’ for duck race By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC THE ducks are back. Hundreds of people will be flocking to Kooloonbung Creek to watch the thousands of ducks released in to the creek as apart of the Port Macquarie Lions Annual Easter Sunday Duck Race. “It’s such a great atmosphere,” said John Fulton, Treasurer of the Port Macquarie Lions Club. “I’m thinking we will get around 500 people to actually watch the race, so it’s quite a crowd.” The iconic duck race includes two races that everyone can participate in - the Business House Duck Race and the Public Duck Race. “This year we have more ducks than ever with 1500 ducks in the public race and over 600 in the business house race, depending on how many businesses purchase a duck,” said Mr Fulton. “We own 2,500 ducks, so it just depends on how many get sold. “We’ve had the same old ducks for many years and this year we thought we’d try something new and get smaller ducks, which we got from Kmart for $1 a duck, so it was pretty hard to pass up.” The Lions have been holding the duck race for over 10 years and each year they continue to give back to the community. “It’s the biggest event of the year for the Port Macquarie Lions Club in regards to dollars raised for charity,” Mr Fulton said. “We confidently expect to be raising around $15,000 to give away to charity. “This money goes to supporting local charities. We like to keep it local, we want people to know that the money raised from this event goes straight back into the community. “This year we are supporting Marine Rescue because they actually come and help us on the day. We also now regularly raise funds for the Hastings Education Fund, and our other main recipient is the Hope Shop because we wanted

to do something to help the homeless in Port Macquarie this year.” The Port Macquarie Lions Club have also assisted in many other avenues throughout the community. “Last year we put our fundraising efforts towards a local organisation that helps the disabled,” said Mr Fulton. “The money went towards a much needed ceiling hoist, costing around $12,000. “The club has also helped Hastings Early Intervention who work with young children with autism and delayed development. Looking back, we’ve definitely helped a lot of local organisations over many years, and with the success of events like the duck race we will continue to do so.” There are great prizes up for grabs in the duck races. The Business House Duck Race sees local businesses go head-to-head after purchasing their special Business Duck for $25, which will see the winner head off to Opal Cove, Coffs Harbour, for a relaxing 5-night break. The Public Duck Race will see caged ducks lifted by crane high above Kooloonbung Creek where they will have a birds-eye view of the finish line before the bottom of the crate opens up to drop them into the creek and on their way to duck racing history. For just $3 or two tickets for $5, anyone can purchase a duck in advance from Lions locations around Port Macquarie, either in Settlement City or Port Central Shopping Centres, just look out for their table. Keen racers can also purchase a duck on the day of the race, however tickets are selling fast. Each ticket number corresponds to a duck in the race to win first prize of $500. Get down to Kooloonbung Creek, Port Macquarie on Sunday, April 1, 2018 from 10.30am for the Lions Port Macquarie Annual Easter Sunday Duck Race. Business House ducks are still for sale and can be purchased by contacting Ian Turner on 0418 688 207.

Make a difference with ETC funds Community organisations urged to apply for $250,000 in grants

PEOPLE interested in making a positive difference to their community are being encouraged to apply for funding from notfor-profit company Enterprise and Training Company Limited (ETC). ETC Chairman Rod McKelvey said ETC was making available $250,000 in community grants as part of the ETC Community Support Fund. “The fund is designed to help organisations reduce disadvantage, generate opportunity, increase support services and/or build capacity in the communities in which we operate,” Mr McKelvey said. Mr McKelvey said organisations could apply for up to $20,000 each with funding for small projects also encouraged. Applications would be assessed based on how well they align with ETC’s focus on employment and training, and meet one or more of the funding objectives: • Contribute to reducing disadvantage faced by the unemployed and/or other disadvantaged groups; • Support the availability and/or sustainability of employment and training opportunities; • Enhance community support services and/or build community capacity. Mr McKelvey said the ETC Community Support Fund had provided close to $1M in funding to more than 100 worthwhile organisations since 2012. “It’s incredible the projects we’ve been able to support over the past six years,” Mr McKelvey said. “Some of our local beneficiaries have included Hastings Early Intervention Program, Northside Progress Association, Port Macquarie

Lord Howe Island alongside sandscapes (north of Newcastle), eerie plains (Monaro) and snow-capped peaks (Snowy Mountains), as well as footage of NSW greenery, beaches and shores and a range of modern, industrial and historic buildings are being pitched as location sites. The three-minute ‘A place for every story’ video also highlights how the NSW scenery can double for locations across the US, Britain, Asia, Europe and the Middle East, and how the world-class Fox Studios is located just 10 minutes from the CBD. Member for Port Macquarie, Leslie Williams said it was no surprise that Lord Howe Island starred as one of the most scenic and interesting areas of the state. “I am delighted that the Port Macquarie electorate is being marketed on the world stage, because the potential gains for our region are enormous,” Mrs Williams said. “Over the last two years, the Government’s ‘Made in NSW’ fund has generated more than $300 million in production expenditure and almost 10,000 jobs.”

John Butler rapt to be back SummerSalt Festival brings impressive line-up

By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC

One of Australia’s most successful performers, John Butler, will be bringing some of his new sounds as well as old favourites to Port Macquarie for the SummerSalt Festival this Sunday (Photo: James Minchin)

I look at these gigs as an opportunity “ and I try and come as prepared as possible to create as much good luck to give the people the chills songs that have placed them to where they are today. “The songs that a lot of people know or have been popular were built really well, like a house, they have good foundations,” Butler said. “Those songs still challenge me. Every day I have to turn up giving 100% and play those songs the way they deserve to be played. “There’s no auto pilot going on either, I’m not talented enough a musician to be on auto pilot.” Port Macquarie will also get the chance to see John Butler’s wife, Danielle, aka Mama Kin take the stage. “We’ve been touring as a family for 15 years,”

IT’S been a while, but John Butler is rapt to be back. The name behind the John Butler Trio is headlining the debut of the SummerSalt outdoor music festival in Port Macquarie this Sunday (March 25), along with an impressive line-up of performers. “We have performed in Port Macquarie before, it’s a beautiful place,” Butler told Your Local Independent. “It’s been a while though, so we are glad to be coming back.” Butler remains as one of the most successful independent artists in Australia, and his band, the John Butler Trio, have one motivation for their performances – to give people ‘the chills’. “I go out on stage and try to be as well prepared as possible and put on the best show I can,” said John. “When I really think about it, what I do for a living, it’s to give people the chills, it’s a real kind of ethereal thing. “A good friend told me that the definition of luck is when preparedness meets opportunity, and so I look at these gigs as an opportunity and I try and come as prepared as possible to create as much good luck to give the people the chills. “Whenever I’m at a gig and I get the chills, it makes life an exciting place rather than a mundane place and I feel like my role as an artist is to create wonder and this idea that life is bigger than we think, it’s magic.” The John Butler Trio are on a nine-show tour which will see the band perform throughout Australia where the trio will be playing some of their brand new beats that reflect where they are at now in life. “All my songs are a reflection of who I am now,” Butler explains. “ My idea is to evolve, but never throw the baby out with the bath water. It’s to take all my strong suits and all the great skills that I have and then add them to what I’m into now. “I don’t want to write the same songs or in the same way as I did 15 years ago. “I believe now I’m a better poet, a better guitarist and a better song writer, in my opinion, so I’m just writing those better songs and playing those parts and not just lean on the songs and become a repeat of the old stuff. “I’m not interested in doing that. I want to evolve. “When I listen to Beyoncé or Ed Sheeran and I hear some phat beats, I’m like I want to do that, not that I want to sound like Beyoncé, but I want to bring those elements into what I do. “To me that’s exciting. I’m always constantly excited by what I could do with my music next.” Even though the John Butler Trio aims to evolve, they still pay massive respect to the

said Butler. “My family are coming on this tour with me, my wife and two kids. My wife’s band is excited to play in Port Macquarie and share some of their new music.” Just like Port Macquarie, the John Butler Trio also share a rich and diverse musical culture, a strong environmentalist heart, and a strong family connection. Butler is excited to bring his latest music to the SummerSalt festival. “I’m finishing the final mix for my new album and it should be out mid year,” John said. “It’s less angry, but it’s a lot deeper. It’s just not dark, some songs aren’t uplifting, but these songs are celebratory but also touch on big personal stuff

Unwanted teams on top WHAT price would you have been given for the current NRL ladder at the start of the season? After two rounds the top five with two wins each are Dragons, Warriors, Panthers, Tigers and Knights. Many punters would not have had any of these teams in their top eight. It will be interesting to see which of these sides are still in the top eight after 10 rounds. A new season always brings some surprise twists, and the early success of all these five teams is surprising, but the biggest eyebrow raiser are the Tigers. In the opening round they accounted for the Roosters and then last weekend edged out the Storm. Both games finishing with a 10-8 scoreline. Most punters would have had the Storm and Roosters in their top four for the season. So for the Tigers to overcome both is incredible. The low scoreline is significant. Both the Roosters and Melbourne have very good attacking patterns, so for the Tigers to keep them to just eight points means their defence is very good. And a good defence means the team is playing for one-and-other. They may be down on star quality, but big on commitment. It will be very interesting to see how the Tigers continue over the next few weeks. OK, after another dismal weekend for Your Local Independent’s tips, it is time to turn the corner: Storm v Cowboys (Thursday, March 22, 7.05pm, AAMI Park, Melbourne): Wow, tough one first up. Both quality sides will be stinging from losses last weekend. The Cows

could have both Michael Morgan and Lachlan Coote back on deck. And the Storm also have a race against the injury clock with Felise Kaufusi and Sam Kasiano. The Storm are at home, but the Cowboys will be more in the groove after two hitouts. The Morgan factor is big. Your Local Independent tips: Cowboys Bulldogs v Panthers (Friday, March 23, 5pm, ANZ Stadium, Sydney): You have to go with winning form, which means the Panthers get the nod. However there is no doubt the Dogs will start to get into a grind sooner rather than later. They have leaked plenty of points in their first two games. Your Local Independent tips: Panthers Tigers v Broncos (Friday, March 23, 7.05pm, Campbelltown Stadium, Sydney): OK, this is the test for the Tigers. Have their opening two encounters been the real deal or a fluke? Three in a row, and people (the bookies) will start to take them seriously. Despite being at home, the Tiges are $2.15 slight outsiders compared to the Broncos ($1.72). There is no doubt Brisbane will have lifted after their win over the Cowboys and most likely will have Jack Bird debuting. The danger here is if the Broncos are in any way complacent. Let’s give the Tigers some respect. Your Local Independent tips: Tigers Raiders v Warriors (Saturday, March 24, 2pm, GIO Stadium, Canberra): The Raiders just have too many good players to keep losing, but the Warriors, like the Tigers, have

jumped out of the blocks. Too early for complacency to be affecting the Warriors. Inconsistency will be their biggest hurdle. Your Local Independent tips: Warriors Rabbitohs v Sea Eagles (Saturday, March 24, 4.30pm, ANZ Stadium, Sydney): Greg Inglis will be a late inclusion or withdrawal after a head knock last weekend and that will have a big bearing on this outcome. The other major factor is the Sea Eagles scintillating form against the Eels last weekend when they notched a 54-0 result. Chances are they will continue that this weekend. Your Local Independent tips: Sea Eagles Eels v Sharks (Saturday, March 24, 6.35pm, ANZ Stadium, Sydney): The Eels will be hurting after being flogged, but there are obviously issues here and that will result in a Sharks win. Both teams are winless, but the Sharks have looked the more dangerous. Your Local Independent tips: Sharks Titans v Dragons (Sunday, March 25, 3.10pm, Clive Berghofer Stadium, Toowoomba): Although Jarrod Wallace is likely to be back from suspension for the Titans, Ash Taylor is very doubtful because of a niggling hamstring. The Titans are improving, but Taylor is their biggest key to success. The Dragons are also a better proposition in ’18, with a genuine desire to win. The game is in Toowoomba. Your Local Independent tips: Dragons. Roosters v Knights (Sunday,

March 25, 5.30pm, Allianz Stadium, Sydney): Last season this would have been a no-brainer, but the re-born Knights make it a tough one to call. Will be plenty of feeling with Mitchell Pearce coming up against his former club. Roosters showed their true colours last weekend and will be too strong for Newcastle.
