It’s showtime Historic Comboyne Show celebrates 80th

By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC ORGANISERS of next month’s Comboyne Show want you to be a part of their 80th birthday celebration. The historic agricultural show has definitely made its mark across time and is now welcoming people from all over to join in the festivities that have been an annual high point since 1933. Local resident and Show Society Life Member, Kay White has been attending the Comboyne Show for 60 years and still has fond memories of her very first show in 1956. “I started going to the show when I was 10,” said Kay. “I started in an organisation called the Junior Farmers. You had to be 10 to join, and from there I was involved in the show and I probably only missed one or two shows here and there when my children were young. “When I was a kid naturally the highlight was the merry-go-round. In those days they only had a couple of merry-go-rounds - one for the little kids and one for the older children, and we didn’t have jumping castles. “The hall that held the produce and flowers stalls was always a big drawcard as well, to see who had what and who won what.” Kay says when she was growing up the show was the town’s showpiece and the highlight on the calendar. • Continued Page 3

Quarry opponents to fight on By NIKALA SIM

THE owners of the new Herons Creek Quarry have been warned to adhere to the guidelines. The contentious development application was approved, last Wednesday, after a lengthy and passionate community fight. “This is not an easy matter to have to consider,” Northern Joint Regional Planning Panel (JRPP) Chair Mr Garry West said. “People live at Herons Creek because they are passionate about their environment.” The quarry, which proposes to employ eight people to extract 200,000 tonnes of hard rock each year, borders on the homes of a number of Herons Creek residents. These residents, along with dozens of others from the village and surrounds, formed the No New Quarry Herons Creek coalition to fight the proposal.

Their efforts resulted in 107 individual objections and further consideration, by the JRPP, of issues these raised. Quarry opponent Maureen Churnside said the JRPP deferred their decision last September stating concern over socio-economic considerations, the lack of proposed alternative sites and noise. “It was inspiring to witness the many wellresearched presentations made by community who opposed theproposal,” Mrs Churnside said. “Despite our best efforts, after three hours of verbal submissions and deliberations, the proposal was approved.” The Broken Bago State Forest quarry site sits atop a hill and it is foreseen that noise will travel due to a lack of physical barriers. JRPP representative Pam Westing said she had reached the conclusion some people would

be affected by the noise of blastings and crushing but was satisfied it would meet Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) standards. “I recognise and do acknowledge community concern,” she said. These standards were non-negotiable, Mr West said, and the proponent had an obligation to operate within the guidelines. “If this is proven to be incorrect, and if noise levels do exceed Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) mandates, the operator will need to modify operations to within the guidelines. “Development consent will be activated on the day the applicant receives the consent – I hope that helps and clarifies.” Once established it would be a matter of policing, Mr West said, with one of the conditions of consent being continual monitoring for the EPA.

Comboyne wants you at their 80th • From Page 1 “In those days all the locals came and it was about the only thing we ever went to as children, because when you’re on a farm things are busy, and there wasn’t all the entertainment that there is today,” she recalls. “Everybody went and it was a good catching up spot with your neighbours or friends you hadn’t seen for a while. In those days as well you were allowed to park around the ring, and some people would ride in on their horse.” Kay also remembers a particular incident from one of those early shows that still makes her laugh. “They used to have bullock riding years ago and I loved it,” said Kay. “It was in the ‘50s and ‘60s and the bullocks were donated for the show by local farmers and two men - Ossie Hollis and Kevin Coombes - would herd them on their horses because there were no trucks to transport them. “On one occasion as they were bringing the bullocks through town on the way to the showgrounds, one of the bullocks got away and ran straight through the shops. It was definitely great local entertainment.” The show is still so important to Kay and the people around the Comboyne area. “It’s the major fundraiser for the show committee - to pay their insurance, to do work on their buildings and it’s still a great social gathering,” said Kay. Kay also exhibits flowers at the show and is widely known for her floral expertise.

“Kay White has been the main stay for flowers up here. She provides the flowers for a lot of different events and everybody goes to her for them, she is amazing at arranging flowers as well,” said Ray Lance, Comboyne Show Publicity Officer. When Ray and his wife moved to Comboyne in 1987, they were both welcomed with open arms. “At my first show somebody grabbed me to be a cattle steward. I knew very little so I walked around with a clip board looking important,”

3

Additional conditions made by the JRPP require all compliance reports and the annual rehabilitation monitoring plan to be made public, in the name of transparency. The JRPP members expressed their thanks and praised the villagers of Herons Creek. “I want to thank the community for their many heartfelt submissions and hard work,” panellist Stephen Gow said. “But the proposal based on statutory requirements cannot be refused.” No New Quarry Herons Creek, is dissatisfied with the JRPP determination and dealings with the Port Macquarie-Hastings Council and Forestry Corporation NSW, both of which sought approval for the development application. “We are pursuing legal options to have the decision overturned,” Mrs Churnside said. Left: Fred Paterson in action competing in a Comboyne Campdraft. In this years’ Equestrian Schedule, organisers are inviting early entry to the Inaugural ‘Mate McMillan Stockhorse Challenge’

laughs Ray. “But that was the inclusiveness of being a part of the Comboyne community.” The committee minutes from some of those very first Comboyne Shows give an insight into some particularly intriguing competitions. “Traditionally when you look at it, the show hasn’t changed too much, in all the different sections and produce shown,” said Ray. “However, I was looking at the minutes and they had jam preserves, produce, fruits, cookery, and cake bakes for girls 14 years and under. However, each competitor had to have another

lady that could vouch that the cake had been made by the exhibitor. “Another competition they don’t hold nowadays is the competition to produce the best lunch suitable for a hard working man.” In all of the 80 years that the show has been operating, the only years the show did not go on was from 1943-1945 due to World War Two. The 2017 show will be held over two weekends - the first weekend on Sunday, March 5, will be devoted to the equestrian section and the Cowless Campdraft, including show jumping and barrel and flag races, and the main Show day is on Saturday, March 11. This year’s show will be the first to showcase the heavy horse and harness feature which includes the Led, Ridden, Working Horse, Harness, and Driver Divisions, plus the ‘Farm House Challenge’. Keep an eye out for ‘The Young Farmers Challenge’, which sees teams of four people, males and females, aged between 18 and 40 who will be involved in a number of rural based challenges such as fencing, wheelbarrow racing, Weet-Bix eating, hay stacking, and portable yard assembly. Winners will then go on to the State Finals at the Sydney Royal Easter Show. For more information contact Andrew Carrol on 0434 626 082. The show will also see history in action with working farm machines, historic cars, heritage display of photos and memorabilia, as well as other interests including art, the championship dog show, poultry show, photography, flowers and produce, plenty of entertainment, country cooking, crafts and sculptures. Admission is $5 for adults and free entry for under 16s. For more information on the most vibrant and historical show in town visit www. comboyneshow.com

LETTERS

LETTER WEEK OF THE

Sandy Mackenzie Sandy Mackenzie

All letters sent in must include your address and phone number and be under 350 words.

Climate change claims ‘flawed’ RAY Wilkie’s letter re climate change is unbelievably flawed. He states that burning fossil fuels is falsely blamed for increasing greenhouse gases. Well, coal for example, consists of 40-90% carbon. The amount of C02 produced from burning a fuel actually weighs more than the amount of fuel itself because each carbon atom combines with two oxygen atoms.

Sorry Ray, but ... RAY Wilkie’s letter (YLI letters 16/2/2017) took me back to when I was retiring from agricultural research in CSIRO in the 1990s – the same time the climate scientists were trying to get the world to listen to what they had found out about the climate. Most climate change deniers got excited about what the models were predicting about the future, but the scientific world got excited about the climate models because they now had an explanation for climate changes already measured over the prior 50 years.

Where does Mr Wilkie think this CO2 goes when fossil fuels are burned? Coal plants also produce, amongst other things, sulphur dioxide - a major cause of acid rain; nitrogen oxide - a major cause of smog and also acid rain; carbon monoxide – a poisonous gas. Another major flaw Mr Wilkie makes is that plants need CO2 to make oxygen and therefore that we must not reduce carbon dioxide in

order to maintain a natural balance. How can adding more carbon dioxide to the atmosphere and also to our oceans that act as major ‘carbon sinks’ maintain a natural balance? The facts are out now and we all know now that it is not South Australia’s renewable energy that caused power shut downs, but in the first instance a severe storm and in the second a failure of the energy regulator to fire up a major back up gas plant.

Mr Wilkie says claims about global temperature rise and their consequences are false – just go online Mr Wilkie and read any of the thousands of articles from a huge range of sources. The problems of making a transition to renewable energy sources are not insurmountable as shown by the many other countries that are well down the path. Sue Baker

In my case, in South Australia, it was the small but steady shift in rainfall from (useful) winter rain to (useless) summer rain that I had seen over my 40-year career. The models showed that the extra energy being absorbed into the tropics was causing tropics to expand, and an increasing number of tropical lows (ex-hurricanes) were dumping water all the way down to the SA wheat belt in summer. When the models were first published, 2020 was impossibly far, into the future (30 years!). I for one did not think I would still be alive in 2020.

But I am still alive and I am quite capable of looking up what those models predicted and comparing them to today‘s world with today’s CO2 level. Sorry, Mr Wilkie, the models predicted post 2010 weather conditions almost perfectly. This has little to do with the ‘power crisis’ in South Australia, which will soon affect all eastern states. A government-owned-and-run power system has a main objective to provide affordable power – a privately owned system has a main objective to make a profit. SA sold its power generation and distribution systems in 1996, in the

hope that private enterprise would invest the capital to replace our near exhausted coal reserves and ageing and dangerous generators. All it did was increase consumer power costs. It appears that private enterprise cannot build and operate a power system which can compete with the solar technologies now on the market. The problem (for the industry) is that – once installed, solar is free. It is commercially and politically unwise to stand between any Australian and a freebee. Cliff Hignett Naracoorte SA

Thumbs Down TO firstly, the person who designed the new $3m roundabout works at the Hospital and secondly to the other person who approved it. Nothing has changed. Peak hour, especially at school time, is still deplorable. Why would you think a set of lights coming off the Oxley Highway would make a skerrick of difference … hardly anyone comes off there. We watched the other day and the two extra lanes into and out of the Hospital were not being used. Wakey wakey council, time for a new road to ease congestion in this wonderful town. Oh, wait a minute, didn’t they also build the Glasshouse? Thumbs Up Thumbs Down is your chance to have your say. Malicious or defamatory submissions will not be accepted. I HAVE been attending the wound clinic at the old hospital for many months. I cannot say enough to convey how wonderful and hard Libby and her team work. A big thumbs up!

Thumbs Down TO the people who disregard the water restrictions and water anytime they like whether it is their day or not. Not in the correct time phrase and wash their cars with a hose running. It is not always the visitors using it that hike up the water rates – they bring a lot of money into the town and we should welcome them.

Thumbs Down TO the Port Macquarie restaurant manager for his lack of courtesy and attention to his first-time guests.

TO the person who found my 10-year-old son’s new Billabong wallet that he got for Christmas and didn’t hand it in! My son lost it at the Kempsey Library on February 4 the wallet had no money in it only a brand new bus pass that will cost $15 to replace and a library card. How sad that someone picked it up and didn’t care enough to hand it in to the library or police. My son is very upset and I hope the person enjoys and likes the wallet as much as he did for the short time he had it. I still believe that good things happen to good people but I’m from an older generation - my son is going to be the same as me I hope.

Thumbs Up TO my dear friends who helped put out flyers for my missing dog. Those who used their internet, Facebook and the many others with loving phone messages and especially to the wonderful gentleman who found her. May you all find peace eventually in your own caring ways. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Thumbs Down TO the landowners who leave animals in a paddock with little or no shade in the summer heat. Any water there would also get hot. Would like to see how long those people would last if they were put in that position.

OMG! (That is NOT what I really want to say!) Ray, Ray, Ray … Ray Wilkie’s letter to the Editor (16/02/17) in regards to climate change has had fallout similar to Hiroshima! HIS opinion. Just to reiterate – Ray, voiced HIS opinion! Not my opinion or the opinion of my staff – Ray’s opinion on climate change. Have we got it? Today we have published two responses that can be printed without some form of censorship. Yep, you read that right! Between angry reactions and different levels of abusive and threatening language received by email. I’m shocked! Thank you, Sue Baker and Cliff Hignett for responding in a civilised manner! Happy to publish your opposing opinions. To my other ‘friends’ - I use the term very loosely - thanks for your feedback. If you’re going to have a go, at least have the guts to let us publish it. There is absolutely no point in attacking me because you don’t agree or approve of what someone else says. You have the same opportunity as everyone else to have your response published. Don’t tell me what to print so it fits your group’s agenda. And Pete! What a bloody legend! I have no idea who you are or where you come from. A faceless ‘keyboard warrior’ at this point. Sally is walking over MS

By NIKALA SIM

WHEN both of Sally Hopkins’ legs went numb from the waist down, she thought she’d put her back out – so she went to a physiotherapist. “He wouldn’t touch me and sent me to a sports doctor who sent me to a neurologist,” the Port Macquarie woman says. “The neurologist thought it was a brain tumour.” Tests revealed this was not the case and the neurologist was then 95 per cent certain the cause was a tumour in her spinal chord, Sally says. When that test also came back negative the neurologist told her he was 99 per cent certain she had multiple sclerosis (MS) - this was in 1993. Since that time, Sally has had numerous attacks of the disease resulting in symptoms that do not always go away. “My symptoms are mainly sensory and I’ve got a lot of funny bits that people can’t see but feel funny to me,” she says. This has included a constricting band around her chest, carpal tunnel-like and shingle-like symptoms, an attack to the left side of her face that was so painful she could not apply mascara, and pain down her left side excruciatingly stimulated by clothes. There was also an attack when Sally’s taste was affected. “Everything sweet tasted awful, everything

Sally Hopkins, left, will be joined by friend and colleague Tania Magon on a 191km journey to raise funds for research into Multiple Sclerosis bitter tasted nice and ordinary stuff was not tasty at all. “The worst of it was chocolate and wine - I still can’t eat chocolate.” Victoria University of Wellington multiple sclerosis research group leader and Malaghan Institute research consultant Anne La Flamme says the disease causes nerve degeneration and results in a gradual loss of feeling and movement. This is caused when cells of the immune system target the brain and central nervous system. MS is a highly variable disease in terms of how it affects each patient, Anne says. “In general, there are three main forms of the disease - relapsing-remitting, primary progressive, and secondary progressive.

“The goal of our work is to identify immune pathways that inhibit multiple sclerosis in the hopes that these pathways will provide muchneeded new therapeutic targets to inhibit or reduce the severity of the disease. “Recently, we have identified several agents, which modify the immune system and are effective at reducing the severity of attacks.” Sally, who has lived in Australia for a very long time, is originally from New Zealand where the incidence of MS is very high. In Australia 23,000 people are affected with the average age of diagnosis being 30. MS affects more young people than any other acquired chronic neurological disease and three out of four Australians with the disease are women.

5

Sally is not content to live passively with MS and will raise funds for research when she walks 191km on The Great New Zealand Trek. She will be joined by friend and colleague Tania Magon. “Sal was telling me about the trek last year and how much she enjoyed it,” Tania says. “Sal has this disease and I think she is just awesome the way she keeps on with everything regardless of all her ailments – she nearly outwalks me. “She doesn’t realise how much she motivates me to keep going and give it a go.” Tania says she wants to support Sally but also raise awareness about a disease of which she knew little. “The symptoms are often things that might be associated with quite common disorders,” Tania says. “But the thing that really shocked me was that it affects such young people and mainly women.” The pair will travel to New Zealand on March 3 to participate in the 12th stage of the annual trek which began at the northernmost tip of the country. This year the trek will begin with a climb up the Rollesby Range and end near Becks. Sally and Tania will join around 250 others and see a mix of South Island high country and some of the Mackenzie basin. “A lot of the trek is through private property so we will see parts of New Zealand that you don’t usually get to see,” Tania says. The first day the pair will walk 39km within 8 hours. “Our goal is to just complete every day and not have massive blisters,” Sally says. The duo are part of a broader fundraising team from Australia, created by Sally’s good friend Ann Hewitt from Townsville. The Wild Woman Walk About team hope to raise $2000 through their Kiss Goodbye to MS facebook page. To donate and keep up to date with stories and photographs from their journey go to kissgoodbyetoms.org/fundraiser/wild-womengreat-nz-trek

THE COWPER REPORT With Luke Hartsuyker

Federal Member for Cowper

Jonathon Peebles, centre front, embraces singer Elizabeth Grace after the pair performed for an appreciative crowd at the Conservatorium Mid North Coast concert at the Glasshouse forecourt, last Friday

It’s music to our ears By NIKALA SIM MUSICIANS and music-lovers alike can breathe a sigh of relief at the eleventh-hour intervention of Port Macquarie MP Leslie Williams. The Conservatorium Mid North Coast (CMNC) was facing closure due to outstanding $160,000 of funds, from the NSW Department of Education. Mrs Williams met with department representative Executive Director Learning, High Performance and Accountability Dail McGilchrist and CMNC board members to resolve the issue, last Thursday. Conservatorium Chairperson Brian Corrigan said both Mrs Williams and Ms McGilchrist demonstrated their ongoing commitment to the continuance of the thriving organisation. “It was obviously their wish to see a speedy and successful resolution to this issue of outstanding funds from 2016,” he said. “It was a spirited and candid meeting with a great result - that Dail McGilchrist, on behalf of the Department of Education, agreed to pay the money owed to us by February 28. “On behalf of the board I wish to formally thank Leslie Williams for her support and encouragement, and Dail McGilchrist for her negotiation and commitment to honour the agreement.” The conservatorium has been active on

the Mid North Coast for the last decade and currently teaches music to over 1100 students, from Great Lakes to Port Macquarie. Their activities include the Crash, Bang and Rattle early childhood music education program for children aged 6 months to five years, music instruction to over 580 local school students, music programs in 15 public schools and 50 free concerts a year, attended by an average of 80 people each, performed at the Glasshouse in Port Macquarie. Concert coordinator Sylvia Scott said the organisation was also negotiating expansion into Kempsey. “Music is a language that can connect young and old,” Mrs Scott said. “We have two autistic child who since attending our Crash, Band and Rattle group have begun to communicate – this is fantastic for us to see. “The conservatorium has something on every day, and nearly every night, of the week.” The organisation receives donations of musical instruments and refurbishes them for student use, they pay for lessons when students can’t afford it and offer scholarships to talented locals to assist in their pursuit of music at a high level. Performers Elizabeth Grace and Jonathon Peebles entertained the crowd at the special outdoor concert, last week. “It is so important to have a central music

hub that offers support for the next generation,” Mr Peebles said. “Every big town needs a conservatorium.” Port Macquarie’s Helen Asterman has attended the Glasshouse concerts since the middle of last year. “I absolutely love them – the atmosphere is fantastic and the majority of the entertainers are fantastic too,” she said. The concert last week was the first for Jeff Prigg. “It is quite professional, well-put together and entertaining,” he said. “The music played has been in a broad spectrum of styles and I will probably come again.” The news that the conservatorium had secured the funding to ensure its continued presence on the Mid North Coast was ‘great news’, Mr Prigg said. A musician himself, he played drums from an early age and has recently taken up violin. “The promotion of local talent is very important,” Mr Prigg said. “This, and mentorship, helps young people spread their wings to pursue music out of the area.” The CMNC assures its students that it will continue to make every effort to minimise the effects of the delayed payment for clients, students and residents until the balance of outstanding money is paid.

ON Sunday I had the honour of attending the annual NSW Rural Fire Service, Lower North Coast Zone National and Long Service medal presentation in Kempsey. The occasion was made especially significant in light of the events over the last week or so. I couldn’t be more proud to honour our brave men and women who risked their lives to defend homes and properties from the devastating bushfires that swept our Mid North Coast area recently. They are the true heroes of this area and we are in their debt. The fires around Kempsey and Port Macquarie spread quickly with little warning and left a trail of destruction in their path leaving people with damaged property and in desperate need of help. I was pleased the Government responded quickly and I could announce last week that there would be funding made available by both state and federal governments. The funding will assist affected individuals, families, businesses and Kempsey and Mid North Coast councils with the cost of recovering from the impact. In our area the fires have caused significant damage to family properties – at the Spring Hill Road Dondingalong Fire (Kempsey LGA) there were two homes destroyed (one habitable), and seven outbuildings destroyed. The swift and sudden nature of this event has left residents understandably distressed and wondering what to do next – this funding will go some way to help ease some of their suffering. It will also help Kempsey and Port Macquarie-Hastings councils with the huge task of cleaning up after the fire and repairing effected infrastructure. The seven local government areas receiving the Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements (NDRRA) assistance in response to the bushfires include: Kempsey, Mid Coast, Mid-Western Regional, Narrabri, Port Macquarie-Hastings, Upper Hunter, and Warrumbungle. This assistance includes: • help for eligible people whose homes or belongings have been damaged; • support for affected local councils to help with the costs of cleaning up and restoring damaged essential public assets; • concessional interest rate loans for small businesses, primary producers and non-profit organisations; • freight subsidies for primary producers; and • grants to non-profit organisations. For information on personal hardship and distress assistance, contact the Disaster Welfare Assistance Line on 1800 018 444. Horse sale will be ‘Epic’

Sherwood farmer, Barry Lee, left, who will be attending the Ray White Rural Epic Horse sale this March, with Vice President of the Kempsey Show Society and Chair of the Equine User Group Christopher Anderson, and Principal of Ray White Rural and founder of the Epic Horse Sale Mark Haywood, inspecting the renovated show ring at Kempsey Showground

By SUE PATERICK JUST like William Shakespeare’s character King Richard III, who would have given his kingdom for a horse, about 1000 eager buyers will also be looking for a good steed at the Ray White Rural Epic Horse Sale and Campdraft. The successful horse sale is in its second year and will be held at the historic Kempsey Showground over three days from Friday, March 17, to Sunday March 19. The event that has attracted 80 nominations, featuring some of the best Australian Stock Horses (ASH) and Australian Quarter Horses (AQH) from NSW and Queensland. According to the event’s founder, Mark Haywood, the whole idea was to put Kempsey back on the map as a town of equine excellence because the Macleay Valley has a lot of history with Australian Stock Horses. “Back in 1955 one of the country’s best Australian Stock Horses was born behind the Willawarrin Hotel,” Mark said. “Abbey has in excess of 2500 descendants registered in the Australian Stock Horse Book.” Kempsey is also the first place in Australia to establish a cutting club, in August 1969, when the East Coast Cutting Horse Association was born at the Kempsey Showground. Another reason Mark founded the event was to bring Quarter Horse and Stock Horse enthusiasts together for a social weekend,

while getting them to display their horse skills and maybe win some prizes and money. The Epic Horse Sale will begin with an inaugural campdraft on Friday March 17 at 1pm with a total prize pool of $45,000. In the main epic campdrafting event, horses purchased at last year’s sale, and remain in the hands of the purchaser, are invited to compete for a total of $26,000 worth of cash and prizes. The winner will receive $9000, a service fee to the exciting new AQH sire Cat-Outa-Hell, and a $6000 Roohide trophy saddle crafted by Australian, John Burgun. In the open campdraft vendors and purchasers from last year can nominate three horses each. It is also open to bid-card holders from last year’s sale, who can nominate one horse. There will be one round and a final with the winner walking away with $3000, a service fee to the ASH Kaderoyale Voodoo, and a $6000 Roohide trophy saddle. Finals for both the epic and open campdraft will be held on Saturday morning. “Campdrafting and team penning are two of Australia’s fastest growing horse sports,” Mark said.

Bulk Billed Home Visit Service

“And both sports are something the whole family can do at any age, plus it’s a sport that gets all the farmers together.” The pre-work of sale horses will start at 1pm on Saturday, March 18, when horses and vendors will show potential buyers what they can do while working a few cattle in the ring. Buyers will also have the chance to chat to vendors before the sale commences at 10am on Sunday, March 19. Last year the average price for a horse was $6500 with the top price lot being $12,000. Horses went to the Hunter Valley, Western NSW, New England, Queensland and Alice Springs. Buyers and vendors are once again coming from throughout NSW and southern Queensland. There will be a canteen serving food and drinks, a bar and a coffee van. On the Friday night there will also be a welcome barbeque with drinks for vendors from 6.30pm. For more information on the Epic Horse Sale go to www.raywhitekempsey.com.au, Google Epic Horse Sale or call Mark Haywood on 0437 286 494 or Tim McCarthy on 0427 674 054.

More funds to GAL battle cancer

JENNY HARRIS

Brought to you by 2WAY FM

How long have you lived in or around the Hastings? I have lived here since 1972. Before that I lived in Adelaide and I came to Australia from Penang, Malaysia 50 years ago. What do you love most about the Hastings? I love the weather. It reminds me of home a lot. The people are very lovely. Even though I don’t swim I regularly walk on the beach. I love the small community. I love the many volunteer organisations. Where do you work and what do you love about your work? I just finished working as a volunteer for the Hope Shop. I did this for almost 10 years and loved meeting people and talking to everyone - they invited me into their hearts and shared their ups and downs. I would like to acknowledge all the volunteers who continue to work here. What do you like least about your work? That you can’t help everyone. You hear their stories but you can’t do what you would really like to do for them in the long term. How do you start your day? I wake up and have a cup of coffee. I spend some quiet time meditating and think of my day. Then just hope to do the best I can. Every day I hope to meet new people and learn new things. What do you do in your spare time? I visit elderly people at nursing homes. I met one man who was 90 years old and he had no family here. I visited him for three years until he passed away. At the moment I visit a lady who is in the same situation and is 86. What is the achievement you are most proud of? I’ve got a beautiful son and daughter – I mean they are really lovely. They are good children in fact they were so good they spoiled me. They never gave me any problems.

$11.6 MILLION To Seek New Cancer Treatments: Researchers working on cures for some of the most aggressive and prevalent cancers affecting both children and adults will benefit from $11.6 million boost in funding from the NSW Government. The NSW Government is funding cancer research including more than $4 million to investigate new treatments for cancers with poor survival rates such as pancreatic, lung, and ovarian cancers. The funding includes 12 early career fellowships and six career development fellowships, as well as a translational program grant. Three grants totaling almost $1.3 million have been awarded to researchers from Children’s Cancer Institute at the University of NSW who are investigating new treatments for neuroblastoma, a cancer that occurs most commonly in children under five and accounts for one in six childhood cancer deaths. An additional $1.3 million has gone to three researchers working on treatments for leukemia. Two of these target acute myeloid leukemia, which has a five-year survival rate of 24 per cent. THE community is invited to join local law enforcement officers for an informal cuppa on Friday, February 23. ‘Coffee with a Cop’ is an opportunity to ask questions and learn more about police work in the Hastings and Macleay. Police Superintendent Paul Fehon said the majority of contact law enforcement had with the public was during emergencies, or emotional situations. These were not always the most effective times for relationship building, he said. “We hope that community members will feel comfortable to ask questions, bring concerns, or simply get to know our officers. This relaxed, one-on-one interaction breaks down barriers is the foundation of community partnerships. Coffee with a Cop is a national initiative supported by The United States Department of Justice, Office of Community Oriented Policing Services. All community members are invited to attend in Port Macquarie at Port City Bowling Club at 10am, and in Kempsey at the Kempsey Macleay RSL Club at 10am. Irish or Aussie, some sheilas don’t like it

IS ‘Sheila’ Australian or Irish? Some sites say Irish and some say Australian. Let’s just say Sheila used to be Irish but years ago the word was transported from Ireland to Australia and the word is now as Australian as, dare I say it, Bruce. Some people feel the word carried derogatory attitudes towards women and some women called Sheila have changed their names because of this. Sheila was once fairly common in Ireland, but it had some different spellings. GA Wilkes in Exploring Australian English says Sheila was a babe. I presume he means she was good looking, but he doesn’t explain. My book Insults and Vulgarities, I use when I am upset with somebody, says Sheila is half of Sheila and Bruce. I knew I read Bruce somewhere. John (‘Nino’) O’Grady puts it nicely in Aussie English when he says “we’re proud of our sheilas”. He goes on to say “you won’t find better lookers anywhere”. Bill Hornadge spoils it a bit, but I can’t use his illustrations because this newspaper’s editor might get upset. But my big dictionary says in the first instance “Australian and New Zealand colloquial”.

my

LAURIE BARBER

It says it became assimilated after Irish use. My Illustrated Australian National Dictionary puts the first use as March 22, 1828, in the Sydney Monitor. It spells the word as Shela. In the early days many Irish came here – either willingly or unwillingly – and the word sheila seemed to have been adopted by this country, to the extent that sheila has been associated with Australia the same way that Paddy retains its Irish connections. The word seems not to have made a big impact on the Australian language at that time. Morris’s Dictionary of Australian Words, published in 1896, made no mention of sheila. Sidney J Baker’s masterpiece called The Australian Language (my copy 1966) mentioned the word many times. He also mentioned shaler, another early term for sheila. The Times literary supplement of 1976

referred to the “nude sheilas” from the brush of artist Norman Lindsay. No wonder other women didn’t like the word sheila. Actually, Lindsay was quite a good artist, if you like his choice of subjects. My big dictionary says sheila, “now Australian and New Zealand colloquial”, means a girl, a young woman, a girl-friend. I would have thought, from that description, that all women past the age of, say, 40 would have been delighted if somebody called them a sheila. To muddy the waters, however, GA Wilkes in his Dictionary of Australian Colloquialisms, dated 1978, said that although the word sheila was not derogatory, “no woman would refer to herself as a sheila”. An Australian woman in Scotland embarrassed fellow tourists when she berated an entertainer for calling her a sheila. He didn’t think he was doing anything wrong. Years ago the Catholic Communications Centre in Sydney caused a furor when it aired some “ocker” television advertisements. One line said: “Jesus had fed 5000 blokes, that’s not counting all the sheilas and kids”. But the advertisements were soon withdrawn. lauriebarber.com;lbword@midcoast.com.au

Community left to pay shortfall “

9

That’s $4.4 million that council forced the ratepayers to fork out for a project that should and most certainly could have been fully funded by the State and Federal Government grants

Literally a feast for local book lovers

By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC BOOK lovers across the Mid North Coast are in for a huge literary extravaganza. The Port Macquarie Rotary Club is back again with their annual Giant Book Sale. Over 40,000 books will be on offer with over 25 categories, including fiction books grouped by author, through to all types of children’s books, travel, history, cooking and gardening. “People can walk out with 20 or 30 books easily,” said Geoff Workman, Media Officer for the book sale committee. “It’s a very popular event and a lot of people keep coming back each year.” “When we used do the sale on a Friday night, there would be 100 people waiting to get in. But now we’ve got a full day on Friday (as well as Saturday and Sunday).” Mr Workman has been a member of the Rotary Club for 26 years and has been a part of the Giant Book Sale for the past eight years. “It’s become part of my life, Rotary. I keep saying it’s going to be my last year, but I keep going.”

The Giant Book Sale started with an idea from Rotary member Fred O’Toole in 1998 and although there have been new technologies such as the Kindle, the love for hard copy books has remained. The Giant Book Sale is a year-round job that sees the same 40 volunteers from Rotary finding the books, storing them in a warehouse, unpacking them, pricing them, displaying them at the sale, selling them, and then packing them back up again. “Our club donates about $25,000 each year back to the community,” said Mr Workman. “Last year we cleared about $16,000 and our best year ever was about $19,000.” This year’s Giant Book Sale will be held over three days from Friday, March 3, and Saturday, March 4, from 9am-6pm and Sunday, March 5, from 9am-1pm. The sale will be held at the newly renovated auditorium at the Port Macquarie Panthers Club. There will also be extra special discounts for books purchased on the Sunday. Entry is free. For more information call Geoff Workman on 0407 016 397.

IT has been a long and protracted project with many twists and turns, but this week we see the reported $7.2 million Port Macquarie Indoor Stadium expansion officially opened. During the Administration period of the Port Macquarie-Hastings Council, the then State and Federal Members pledged support for the expansion of the stadium to help cater to the needs of a fast-growing local government area. The Federal Government grant contribution was $2.8 million. The State Government grant was $2.5 million through the PCYC organisation, which at the time was lauded by all as a muchneeded youth program for the region. This combined $5.3 million in pledged funding was at that time, enough to fund the entire project based on the estimates. During the last term of council, much back and forth with all parties concerned ended with Council deciding to dump the PCYC from the project and fund the shortfall in the foregone State funding. The reasoning for the dumping of the PCYC will no doubt stay off the official record because the decision was made behind closed doors in a confidential session of council. The decision to ‘find’ millions of dollars to fund the shortfall in the stadium project was also in stark contrast to the earlier pitches by the mayor who continuously, publicly, claimed that council was cash-strapped. I clearly remember the conversations at the

The Rinse Cycle By Adam Roberts - Former Councillor, Port MacquarieHastings Council

time that suggested council couldn’t fund popular projects like the Wauchope Memorial Pool upgrade and had to use the sale of Timbertown funds as they had no other option. Unfortunately, as we have seen time and time again, the delays with council going back and forward trying to get their ‘ducks in a row’ and get a project off the ground has resulted in the community paying more than they should. In this project’s case, millions of dollars more than necessary. I’m sure you’re ok with maths but I’ll step this out to make it very clear and simple. A $7.2 million project that is funded to $2.8 million (Federal Government Grant) leaves a shortfall of $4.4 million. That’s $4.4 million that council forced the ratepayers to fork out for a project that should and most certainly could have been fully funded by the State and Federal Government grants. So the community is $4.4 million in the hole and there’s unlikely to ever be a PCYC in the region again. Sorry, not excited.

Burnt-out forests are hazardous

Fire crews are still on alert By SUE PATERICK

Owners of South Kempsey Corner Store Café & Groceries, Ben and his mother, Jenny Marks, are celebrating a successful six months in the family business they started with Ben’s wife,Kira, so they could all share a life together

Corner store still ‘works’ “

We need more core businesses like ours in the region to promote our local food culture, especially now the Pacific Highway has bypassed Kempsey

By SUE PATERICK FOR generations the corner store has been the gathering place of a neighbourhood, a place where locals met, chatted and shopped. One local Macleay Valley family have created a modern-day social hub after opening a family business in South Kempsey that offers good food, excellent coffee and a great customer experience. The renovated South Kempsey Corner Store Café & Groceries is celebrating six months in business and part owner, Ben Marks, said the public has responded to the honest quality of the food and service. “They see we care and respect our customers and food,” Ben said. “So we have been well supported and we’re still growing.” Ben runs the business with his wife, Kira, and Mum, Jenny. It has been a real family affair though and labour of love with Dad, John, helping Jenny and Ben build the modern yet rustic chairs, tables and shelves that Ben designed. And to spread the wealth to the wider Macleay community, the recycled timber used was sourced locally as was the metal plumber’s pipe. Ben grew up in the Macleay but had been away for 12 years, working first in the fashion industry where he met his wife, and then running his own event merchandising business for five years.

He came back home to open a family business in the old shop his parents owned that had been vacated. “The main goal was to run a family business and to share life together and make wealth together,” Ben said. “After working in the fashion industry for so long Kira and I wanted something more real and food was appealing because cafes are fun and sociable.” Their charming store at 46 Lachlan Street combines not only a trendy café but quality groceries, many sourced locally. A meat fridge is also in the planning to sell locally-grown meats. Ben believes there is a nice synergy in having a café and a grocery together because unlike larger stores, they can bring in local produce and reduce wastage by recycling excess produce in the café. Their delicious menu offers breakfasts, burgers, sandwiches, rolls, wraps, salads, gluten free options, fried foods, baked treats and drinks. The menu would be at home in a five-star restaurant with items like a smashed avocado bagel with roasted macadamia nuts, dukkah and extra-virgin olive oil or a breakfast burger with bacon, fried egg, baby spinach, smashed avocado, fried halloumi, caramelised onion relish and house-made BBQ sauce. “People are more conscious of what they eat these days so this is good for local growers,” Ben said.

“We need more core businesses like ours in the region to promote our local food culture, especially now the Pacific Highway has bypassed Kempsey.” Ben believes the town needs to repurpose itself and provide growers with distribution outlets. “We have farmers and producers that need to be encouraged,” he said. “This is more possible now than ever before because locals are willing to support locallygrown produce.” The South Kempsey Corner Store employs 15 workers, including Ben, Kira and Jenny. For the family being able to employ local people is another nice thing about running a small business. “It is a great way to circulate wealth in the community,” Ben said. And he loves the Macleay Valley. His family is here, it has the best beaches in NSW and it has a good balance in lifestyle. Ben is excited about the Macleay’s future especially once the highway is completed all the way to Brisbane. He predicts a big movement of people because technology allows you to work anywhere these days. “New businesses create culture and more young people will see the opportunity here and give a business a red-hot go,” Ben said.

LAST Friday Dondingalong residents awoke to the first day without firefighting aircraft hovering above, although fire crews were still monitoring the fire on the ground. According to Rural Fire Service (RFS) Zone Manager for the Lower North Coast, Superintendent Lachlann Ison, the Dondingalong fire was on patrol status. Fire crews from National Parks and Wildlife and the RFS have been monitoring the fire daily since Sunday. “Mopping up the fire has been the main objective, especially before the predicted warmer weather scheduled for the weekend,” Mr Ison said. He is also hoping the predicted rain events drench the fire site. Last Thursday was the first sunny and windy day since the blaze that destroyed 450 hectares, one house, one uninhabited dwelling and numerous outbuildings and fences. “So hotspots needing attention were identified and fire crews will be keeping an eye out for possible re-ignitions,” Mr Ison explained. “There is also a danger that trees may be burning internally.” Mr Ison warns residents in the fire ravaged area to be aware of the potential hazard of falling trees or large branches and to avoid walking or driving in burnt forested areas. In recent times falling trees and branches have proven to be a major hazard for firefighters and have resulted in several deaths. “It could have been a lot, lot worse but for the efforts of local firefighters who attended the fire on Sunday afternoon, plus the work of local residents in preparing their homes and evacuating,” Mr Ison added. He also praised the work of the large fixed-wing aircraft that put in fire breaks near properties during the wind change to the south, where ground crews were struggling to get to those fire areas. The cause of the fire is still under investigation and is now in the hands of Police Forensics, who will continue their investigations. The Dondingalong fire was listed as extreme, one off catastrophic, so visit www.rfs.nsw.gov. au to prepare, act and survive. The next fire could be catastrophic.

‘Shed’ shows its true colours By NIKALA SIM

THE heritage of a Port Macquarie school building has been embraced and paired with the latest technology to create a dedicated creative arts facility. Once a theatre restaurant with a sunken dance floor, the Woolshed has seen over a dozen efforts to modernise it, Heritage Christian School Principal Geoff Brisby says. “When the school first purchased its’ site off Hastings River Drive, about 33 years ago, the Woolshed was on a block of land of separate title. “The story is that prior to its relocation it had been a commercial building used as a woolshed. “In the 1990s it was offered to the school for purchase and at that point became our second building.” The timber pole frame building had reached the end of its serviceable life and was posing a significant problem in terms of maintenance, Geoff says. “It’s a very funky building – there is no building in Port like it.” Design and technology is Geoff’s passion and he loves wood, he says. “I have an appreciation for timber and want it on display.

Chloe Garrett, Griffin Jenkins, Hannah Morson, Lindsy Isaac, Abbey Stevens, Aaron Wood and (front) Alayna Dafter, left, and Amy Carter on stage within their school’s heritage building – the Woolshed All previous attempts to modernise the building had failed so together with school parent and building designer George Watt it was decided to take the Woolshed back to its roots. The first step was to remove prior modifications including a floating ceiling that hid rafters and a hard wood ceiling. Student Amity Gilmour said she had no idea the Woolshed had been hiding its beautiful wood. “It wasn’t attractive before but now it’s all smooth and nice and looks brilliant. “I really love the wood it gives it this really nice atmosphere.” The year 11 student studies music and drama in what is now a much more open space with a

wide new stage that can be accessed from the rear. An open central area is flanked by classrooms with windows on nearly every single wall. Kindergarten to year 12 teacher Dawn Bayly said it was really wise to keep the heritage of the school. “To be able to keep the heritage of the building but make it more functional as a creative arts centre is a real blessing. “The Woolshed shows our journey - you see the old, and the new and the fresh. “We want to be an inclusive community school and the open classrooms in the Woolshed allow people to see how we are teaching and

11

engaging students. “It is amazing how it is now one functional building with so many uses.” These include drama, music, and primary school classes, special needs classes, and even economics and maths. This is the result of two men dreaming dreams that turned out to be something really unique, Principal Geoff says. There is as much timber on display as possible because that is the nature of the building. Under-floor technology and sensitive additions, including stage and lighting, add to the feel to create a “commercial funky arty crafty thing”. The refurbishment of the Woolshed is stage one of the project part-funded by the Block Grant Authority for non-government schools. The second stage, which is about to begin, will see a second story built onto H-Block. This will expand the school by three classrooms, multiple storerooms, a new staffroom and office space. In the last six years Heritage Christian School has doubled in size and struggles to find room for its 55 staff. Student numbers sit around 340 not far off their theoretical optimum of 400, Geoff says. “But we are not doing things for growth – we are doing them so we can do what we do, better. “We do school a particular way. “We deal with the most disadvantaged cohort overall compared to any other school in the region and put in an enormous commitment to special education, in dollars, time and staffing. “Part of what we are doing is increasing our capacity where we operate what we call school within school. “This is not a special school where special kids go, but a mainstream school that has integrated all sorts of needs. “Our educational philosophy is to identify student strengths and build and expand on these to address weaknesses. “The focus is on getting the most out of a child and helping them be free to be themselves.”

Historic Bible on display ON display in St Thomas’ Anglican Church in Port Macquarie is a 248-year-old 1769 Bible (it was printed one year before Captain Cook discovered Australia). The Bible belonged to Mr and Mrs Philip Dew who first came to Australia from England in 1852 settling at Black Flat on the Manning River. Philip Dew sadly drowned in 1863 whilst trying to cross the river on horseback. The Bible was first presented to St Thomas’ Church in 1960 by descendants of the Dew family but was later vandalised. In 2006 Barry Weaver professionally restored the Bible and it is now on display in the Church. On March 7, the Bible Society in Australia will be 200 years old. It was originally known as the British and Foreign Bible Society. The Bible is still one of Australia’s most

On Sunday, March 5, there will be a 200th Anniversary Service at Hillsong Convention Centre in Sydney with keynote speakers being the Anglican Archbishop of Sydney The Rt Rev Glenn Davies and Hillsong’s Senior Pastor Brian Houston. The service can be seen or screened into a church or hall via webcast.

Donald Trump swearing on two Bibles held by his wife Melania at his swearing-in as the President of the United States. The first Bible belonged to Abraham Lincoln and the second Bible was given to Trump by his mother when he was a child.

Trump a sign of the ‘ordinary’ uprising QUESTION: How should I as a Christian relate to President Donald Trump? Answer: It is amazing that someone with Donald Trump’s background – a man married three times, who built his fortune on gambling casinos, is facing numerous accusations of sexual abuse and is known as a bully has been elected as the 45th President of the United States of America. What is even more amazing is that he is the first President who has never been in politics nor served in the military to gain office. The Bible tells us very strongly to pray for our leaders. No matter how flawed they may be or what their political persuasion may be. We are told to honour and respect them. In Romans 13 we are told to submit to the authorities and recognise them as being in this position under the sovereign hand of God. It is of interest that 18 months before Donald Trump was elected, in fact long before he was known to be considering running for President, three notable prophets in the US forecast his election victory. Lance Wallnau boldly prophesied Trump’s victory and published his prophecies. Two other well-known Christian leaders, Chuck Pearce and Rick Joyner made similar prophecies. Many evangelical Christian leaders in the US backed Trump against the Clinton regime. Many of these leaders prophesied and saw Trump as an Isaiah 45 Cyrus, an unbeliever who was raised up to rescue God’s people. Since gaining office President Trump has set about to change the status quo in Washington and

restore Christian values to the American political scene. He has promised to ‘make America great again’. America was great when its people held Godly values, honoured the Ten Commandments and sought to follow the Bible in the way they lived. Here in Australia a similar groundswell that saw Trump elected and England vote for Brexit is growing. People are sick of politicians feathering their own nests and continually being out of touch with the ordinary Australian. One of Australia’s great tennis champions and now Pastor of a large church movement in Perth, Margaret Court was attacked by one media outlet for her views on ‘same-sex marriage’ recently. This is the Australia we are declining into. There are a lot of decent people tired of all this whether they are Christian or not. I predict that in the coming years and elections we will see a resurgence of support for people with the values of the ordinary people and those who believe in God and want fairness and moral values back in our society. So what should we do as Christians? Trust in God. Pray for leaders like Donald Trump and seek God for His mercy for Australia.

Physi a sport for all ages Pictured: PortPhysi generational representatives Erin and Tracy Kaczorowski with teacher Cheryle Waterlander, right

By NIKALA SIM

FEW sports encourage such devotion that they cross the generational divide. But physical culture, commonly known as ‘physi’, does this very thing, says teacher Cheryle Waterlander. The 63-year-old has participated in physi since the age of seven and has taught the sport to women, young and old, for 28 years. This year she may join her daughter who is 39, and eight and five-year-old grandaughters to compete to make it a three-generation celebration, Cheryle says. “It is one of the few sports where you can relate to one another at different ages. “They say it takes a village to raise a child and physi does this. “All the young girls have idols to look up to and they just love it.” Cheryle started the PortPhysi Club in 2000 when she relocated to the area. The uptake of the club has been hard but the teacher, who can still touch her toes, encourages females of all ages to come and give it a try. Physi is a real mix of dance, aerobics, gymnastics, pilates, yoga, and ballet and teaches good posture, Cherlye says. “It gives the girls a nice deportment - no round shoulders or slouch. “And it’s quite amazing the amount of self confidence it will build in a girl to actually get out on the floor, do her physi and come away thinking ‘I did good, I really did good, that was my best’. “That’s what we aim to do – get them to do their best. “As long as you come off the floor thinking that was the best you could do you can’t ask for more - and that’s what I try and help the girls get to - with a lot of bling as well.” The PortPhysi Club adheres to the Edith

matter.” But most of all it’s the enduring friendships formed over those 30 years that make physi so special, Pauline says. It is an excellent mother and daughter sport and one which bonds her and her daughter, she says. “Because it gives you something to do together. “My daughter is independent but always says good luck mum when I compete – we’ve still got that physi thing in common.” Erin and Tracy Kaczorowski are just one of the club’s mother and daughter teams. “I’ve been doing physi since I was three,” 11-year-old Erin says. “I like to dance with other people, it’s fun and it’s helping me with my asthma.” When she has an asthma attack she puts her hands on her head and breathes in and out just like she does in class, Erin says. Competitions are fun and she has won heaps of medals, Erin says, but this year she hopes to finally make it to state. Mum Kristen Murray attended the first class of the year, last week, with daughter Kaleena, 9, who thought it was ‘awesome’. The mother of three is looking forward to attending classes herself. “I want to do the ladies class to give me something that’s my own hobby to pursue.” Classes are on Wednesday from 3.45pm to 7.30pm, ranging from three-years to ladies, at Hastings Public School. Port Booti success

PORT Macquarie Sailing Club had a successful Booti Cup regatta at Forster, recently. Frank O’Rourke on Dino won the catamaran division, Paul Robertson and Warren Sykes in Slam Dunc won the non-spinnaker monohull division, and Port Macquarie Sailing Club took out the Booti Cup itself. Last Sunday was race six of the summer series on the Hastings river. Frank O’Rourke on Dino sailed his usual flawless race in the catamaran division, finishing about 20 minutes ahead of Dave Winter on Spica, who just held off Rob Barwick on Drift for the whole race to get second place on yardstick. Dino also won on handicap, and Spica again took second place ahead of Drift. In the monohull division Simon Gandy and Jake Kordemaa in Voyager won on yardstick, followed by Steve Bohlsen sailing one-up in his MG Splash Dance.
