Meet Port’s ‘Super Jay’ By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC MEET Port Macquarie’s very own super hero – Jay Corr. These days he may struggle to leap tall buildings in a single bound, but there are a growing number of people who owe their lives to this mild-mannered man. All of Jay’s heroics have occurred at Port’s Shelly Beach, where the 72-year-old is the unofficial lifesaver. Sydney’s Joy Carter say she owes her life to Jay. Joy, 73, who lives at Mona Vale, but often holidays in Port with her husband, explained how a recent early morning swim almost turned tragic. “I had been in the water about 20 minutes. I was in the lagoon area with my goggles on just watching fish,” she said. “The seas were high and the outgoings were quite strong. I was too busy watching fish to see where I was heading. I just got sucked out the

channel between the rock barrier. “I was already out there and was trying to make my way back across the rip when I was thrown up onto the rocks by a wave and thrown again, and that’s when Jay and the others came to my aid.” Joy visits Port Macquarie on a yearly basis to visit friends and go fishing. And although she is an experienced and strong swimmer, it just wasn’t enough for the harsh conditions that day at Shelly Beach. “I was thinking how I was going to get out of this, because the waves kept coming and I couldn’t afford to be thrown (against the rocks) again because I was already injured,” Joy said. “Because I am a strong swimmer and I know the sea pretty well I was trying to think of the best way out of there, but I was struggling.” Jay Corr, a former policeman and well known within local theatre circles, is a regular swimmer at Shelly Beach and says he has performed about 14 rescues there. • Continued Page 10

Kmart’s new store opens with a buzz of excitement By SANDY MACKENZIE YLI GENERAL MANAGER AT 8am today (Thursday March 23) Kmart Port Macquarie is set to officially throw its doors open to a very excited community. After loads of speculation, and just under 12 months of eager anticipation since the traditional ‘sod turning’ in April 2016, the giant retailer has delivered on its promise to bring

Kmart to the centre of the Mid North Coast. As the first Kmart store to open in NSW this year it promises to be a showstopper with the new store layout that has been adopted nationally by the company. For many locals across the Hastings and Macleay, Kmart is all about the low prices on offer for everyday products – having a store in Port Macquarie will be a godsend for many families as it will be convenient rather than the previous day trip to shop at their closest store.

There has certainly been a buzz of excitement around as the new complex housing Kmart, has literally grown before our eyes. In fact, the hype is tangible right around the region. Kmart is employing 200 locals to work in the store from the outset and, coupled with the extra work to construct the complex, should provide a timely injection to the local economy. Kmart will have loads of family fun activities throughout today commencing at 9am and concluding around 4pm. Store Manager

Michael Lawrence says: “We’re fully stocked so customers can have access to our newest product ranges at the lowest prices. It doesn’t get better than that! Customers will just love what they see when they walk through those doors.” There are 17 specialty stores in the new Kmart shopping centre which should also attract more national retailers to our region. For those that love some retail therapy, these are exciting times. I’m excited! Are you?

From bushfire to flood

Above left: Just last month Esther Komar’s property in the Macleay Valley was ravaged by bushfire. This week she has been flooded in as torrrential rain caused most local waterways to breach their banks (above right).

The extremes of this sunburnt country

By SUE PATERICK in the Macleay Valley JUST weeks after sheltering under a wet blanket under her verandah to escape an extreme bushfire, my friend Esther Komar is now flooded in. “What a world we live in,” she said. “One day I’m burnt out then nearly five weeks later I’m flooded in.” On Sunday morning she could hear the creek raging and the gullies rushing and knew she wasn’t going anywhere. The rain, while welcome after such a dry, hot summer, has caused a fair amount of erosion around Esther’s property due to the intensity of the fire removing all ground cover. What was worse, though, Esther was unable to cross her flooding creek to attend her own going away party! She is heading off to Europe for over three months and we had planned a small luncheon to wish her well on her adventures.

NO GAP • • • •

Kempsey’s Riverside Park was inundated as the Macleay River rose “I would have swam flooded gullies and creeks to get out if it was my departure day, but that’s not until next week,” Esther said, and laughed. At 10am on Monday, a foggy, drizzily morning, all the Macleay Valley’s low-level bridges were closed. This included bridges at Bellbrook, Toorooka,

Temagog, Turners Flat and Sherwood. According to May Gill, Unit Controller at Kempsey SES, the water over these bridges was expected to drop, however; she advised that the bridges would remain closed until Kempsey Shire Council cleaned and checked each bridge for structural damage. At the time of writing the Georges Creek was

3.53 metres and falling, Bellbrook was 4.08 and falling and Kempsey was 3.58 and falling. May stressed that while the rivers and creeks were falling no one should attempt to drive into flooding water and everyone should remain observant. According to the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM), there was an inland trough at the moment that would bring more showers and thunder storms to the Mid North Coast for the rest of the week. Heavy rainfall was expected in the eastern part of the Northern Tablelands. So far this month Kempsey has received 372 millimetres of rain, almost three times the average rainfall for March. The highest rainfall ever recorded was 413.4 millimetres in 2001 when the Macleay Valley had one of its worst floods. If you are in an emergency situation contact the SES on 132 500.

LETTER WEEK

OF THE

All letters sent in must include your address and phone number and be under 350 words.

Watching local government at work I RECENTLY attended my first council meeting. There were only a few items on the agenda which I thought would be of interest. Councillors did not debate the majority of items and consequently were generally satisfied with the recommendations of council staff. The items which I thought were of interest were: • The council has adjusted its budgeted profit and loss forecast to reflect an expected profit of $178,894 for the year ended 30 June 2017. The main reason for this is that Council’s investments are expected to perform better by $1,036,575 than anticipated.

Airport concern I ATTENDED a recent planning meeting over a development application for the Kempsey airport training facility, proposed by an overseas organisation. From this meeting I left without any faith or goodwill toward Kempsey Council, The Joint Regional Planning Panel along with proposing company representatives. It seems reasonably clear from the start that the panel had agreed and had trust in the company’s independent

Only Councillor Hawkins commented on this item despite the level of profit being an important indicator of the council being ‘fit for purpose.’ I would like to have seen more councillors take an interest in this item. • The majority of councillors expressed their reservations about a recommendation that a draft policy to preference local businesses (by 5%) tendering for council contracts be drafted and a one-year trial then be implemented. Only Councillors Turner and Hawkins were in favour of the recommendation while Councillor Alley had reservations about the

legality of the proposal and said it was ‘fatally flawed’. Councillor Intemann was concerned that the place of business of tenderers requesting this preference would need to be checked. In an effort to diffuse the situation, the Mayor moved an amendment that only the draft policy be prepared and a trial period not be accepted. This was passed with only Councillor Cusato against it. It looks as if, when this policy is ready to be considered, it will not be passed. Local businesses will have to rely on what Councillor Alley said were their ‘natural preferences.’ There are many other councils who

have this policy, but also many others who don’t have it. • Councillors unanimously passed an item recommending prices for the digging of graves. You may be surprised to know that digging a grave will cost $1,400 including GST. I believe that council could investigate this and try to get the cost reduced. Maybe this is not the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the costs of Council services, but it was disappointing to see that not one Councillor picked up on this seemingly excessive cost. John Oxley Port Macquarie

evaluation of noise emissions and other impacts despite many calculations being questionable. The panel, after a number of forced admissions, decided to delay making a decision for a more reliable noise and impact study. Despite this it seems this proposal will eventually get the green light. There were over 300 concerned ratepayers at the meeting overflowing to the hallways and several council elected speakers spoke quite admirably and logically against the proposal but I felt heard with deaf ears by the panel. Coffs Harbour has three runways

and has approx 20,000 plane movements per year. The Kempsey airport has one runway and is being proposed to have 28,000 movements per year. A local pilot at the meeting proved it impossible to happen and will undoubtedly cause huge aeronautical problems. During the meeting it was also quite clear the Kempsey council showed ignorance and perhaps incompetence of knowledge toward the project and had no idea what the present restrictions on the airport were nor did the current training organisation know

what their agreed times of operation were as directed by council. I think it also shameful that Kempsey council only notified a handful of residents of this proposal signifying at the very least a pure contempt for its ratepayers as this proposal will affect every single resident in this region. This proposal is claimed to bring a huge financial return to the region. It is clear from the project thus far, that is unlikely and will benefit a tiny few and 99% of jobs will be imported. Thumbs Down TO Port Macquarie Water Management. The total water in storage for Port Macquarie has now been lowered to 62.6% as of March 1, despite recent heavy rain in the last week. The new graph on the Water Storage web site really tells the zero lack of pumping from the Hastings River. This is despite the fact that rainfall at the head of the Hastings River Mt Seaview is recorded above average at a total of 906.6 mm total for 2017 as compared to an average recorded rainfall of 745 mm. Our council has lost control of its ability to provide adequate water for its residents. An urgent independent inquiry into this matter is required.

TO the bus drivers and office staff at Busways Port Macquarie for their courtesy and help in getting me from and to the industrial area on February 27 and 28. On the Tuesday it was very wet in Port Macquarie the bus drivers on routes 324 and 325 were extremely helpful. You would not see this type of service in the big smoke. Thank You.

TO the Port Macquarie-Hastings Council for overseeing another Touch Football parking fiasco. Year after year the council don’t seem to know how to handle the huge number of cars that need parking. Some people are reporting delays of three quarters of an hour accessing the airport. Is it going to be better next year? I don’t think so. The airport road is a disgrace. Come on Council you can do better!

EVERY morning I collect the mail and grab the newspapers on my way in to the office. Nothing odd about that, but I just had to share this. The other day I was being served in the newsagency. I was the only person in the shop. Two older ladies came in, followed by an older gentleman a couple of seconds later. As the staff member finished serving me and I’m about to leave the man says impatiently: “Can I just pay the right amount for my paper?” and pushes in to hand his money over. I could have tolerated that, if in fact he had the correct money. The thing is, he didn’t! He then proceeded to ask for his lotto tickets – even choosing the individual numbers! Meantime, the two ladies are still waiting to be served. I was half way out the door and had to really push myself to keep walking – I had to bite my tongue but I really wanted to give this man a rev up! How rude! I wanted to share this experience, because I think it is something that we all need to consider. What sort of member of the community are we? Are we kind, courteous, mindful of the people and situations around us? What type of role model are we for our younger generations? This man’s behaviour was exactly the sort of thing I hear older people bleating on about the ‘youth of today’. Yeah, well, ‘Monkey see, monkey do!’

Tania proud of ‘group’ award By SUE PATERICK WHILE she was proud to receive the 2017 Oxley Local Women of the Year Award on International Women’s Day earlier this month, Kempsey’s, Tania Powick, also felt humble to stand beside so many remarkable women who had done amazing things. Tania received the award for her tireless volunteer and community work from Oxley MP, Melinda Pavey, and wished she could have shared the moment with all the other volunteers she works with. “You never do anything alone so getting the award was recognition for everyone,” she said. Even though she runs her own business, Coastal Wealth Directions, Tania still finds the time and energy to volunteer with the Macleay Valley Business Chamber, Rotary Club of Kempsey, Macleay Valley Business Women’s Network, Kempsey Riverside Markets Committee, and much more. “I like to see things happen and I like to do things and not just wait for things to happen,” she said. “It’s just about giving back to the community and doing your bit to help make it a place everyone can be proud of.” Luckily, the groups Tania is involved with are all hands-on and all enjoy making positive changes. “We’re very lucky in the Macleay Valley because we have all these groups, and people, that are so proactive in working for their community.” Tania has lived in the Macleay for 25 years and loves its people and natural beauty. She grew up in Coffs Harbour and attended university at Armidale. A Financial Planner in the region for the past 20 years, Tania has recently opened her new offices at Suite 3, Ranatan Business Centre on the corner of Belgrave and Smith Streets in Kempsey.

Mrs Linda Hurley, His Excellency General The Honourable David Hurley, Tania Powick and the Honorable Melinda Pavey MP at the RECENT 2017 NSW International Women’s Day award ceremony in Sydney She specialises in financial planning, pre-andpost-retirement strategies, wealth accumulation, super and personal insurances. Her advice to anyone wanting to start their own business is to be clear about what they want to achieve and to back themselves. “You have to do your research and be realistic,” she added. “Talk to people and get feedback. “Surround yourself with experienced people and great mentors.” Tania attributes her success to being involved

with positive groups of people who are happy to share their experiences. “People want people to succeed,” she said. “I encourage people to get involved in things, even a small hand can make a big difference. “There is always a need for more people to be involved in committees and volunteering.” The NSW Women of the Year Awards has been running for six years to recognise and celebrate the outstanding contribution women across NSW have made to industry, community and society. STATE MATTERS

With Leslie Williams State Member for Port Macquarie

QUAD Bike Rebates Doubled: The NSW Government has doubled the value of rebates available to farmers for quad bike safety measures. The Government’s Quad Bike Safety Improvement Program, introduced last July, gave farmers access to a one-off rebate to buy helmets, undertake training, retrofit safety equipment to existing quad bikes, and/or buy a safer side-by-side farm vehicle. The Government has doubled the rebate to $1000 for the purchase of a side-by-side vehicle, $500 for the retrofitting of safety equipment to an existing quad bike, and $90 for the purchase of an approved helmet. As many farmers have more than one quad bike, from now they can also apply for two rebates, meaning they can be eligible for up to $2000 rather than the original $500 if they are buying side-by-sides. Since 2011, 111 people have lost their lives in quad bike accidents nationally, with 29 of these fatalities occurring in NSW. A new, 12-minute, online quad bike safety presentation (www.safework.nsw.gov.au) has also been launched to give farmers easy access to important information. To qualify for the rebates, farmers are required to complete the online course, do a quad bike safety course, or interact with a SafeWork NSW officer. Rebates under the quad bike program are administered by NSW Farmers. Have Your Say On The Regional Ports Strategy: I am encouraging local residents, businesses and visitors to have their say on the NSW Government’s Regional Ports Strategy. Ports and harbours are major drivers for jobs, business, tourism and recreation, in coastal communities. The Regional Ports Strategy will deliver a ten-year plan for 25 state-owned regional ports along the NSW coast, including Port Macquarie. The plan will look at opportunities for upgrades and new investments from the public and private sectors to boost amenity, improve public spaces and economic activity. The Government is developing a strategic approach for the management, maintenance and new investment potential for all state-owned ports. The Government has spent over $60 million on NSW ports under the Coastal Infrastructure Program. This new strategy will help the state plan for the social and economic growth in these communities over the next decade. This is an opportunity to join the conversation and contribute to the strategy that will support business, tourism and regional communities. Have your say by Sunday April 9 at http:// yourportcrownland.engagementhq.com

About 300 residents gathered at Kempsey Shire Council chambers last week to express their angst over a proposed expansion at Kempsey Airport. Adam Ulrick from the Save Kempsey Airport Action group was the first to speak.

‘Community consultation lacking’ By SUE PATERICK TORRENTIAL rain didn’t deter about 300 concerned residents attending a public meeting at Kempsey Shire Council (KSC) chambers last week to put their case to the Joint Regional Planning Panel over a proposed expansion at Kempsey Airport. Numbers were so large it was impossible to seat everyone inside Council chambers, so people stood against the walls, sat on the floor and filled the hallway and stairwell. The five-member Joint Regional Planning Panel (JRPP) was in town to hear nine community members list their concerns over the Australian International Aviation College’s (AIAC) Development Application (DA) to dramatically expand its operations at Kempsey Airport. Emotions ran high among the crowd as Adam Ulrick, spokesperson for the Save Kempsey Airport Action Group, stepped up to the podium first. He said the group supported Kempsey Airport’s current operations and were open to proposals for economic development that had gone through due process, and was independently evaluated. He also said, what the action group opposed was what they considered to be a lack of transparency and community consultation from

KSC and the grossly excessive expansion plan that would see almost 30,000 flights per year by 2018, flying seven days a week from 6am to midnight. Another important issue concerned the noise assessment, which Mr Ulrick said was superficial, inadequate and not independent. The Action Group were also worried about what they claim is incomplete and inaccurate economic data in the DA, no mention of plans post 2018, a change from leasehold to freehold title, and building plans that take up the 20 private hangar spaces built with a $2.5 million grant from the Australian Government. Mr Ulrick said council had breached their own Customer Service and Public Notification Policy because it failed to ‘ensure that all affected residents significantly impacted by potential developments be included in notification in writing’. “Planes do not simply fly over the directly adjoining properties in Airport Road,” he stressed. Indeed two of the speakers came from Dondingalong and one from Gowings Hill Road, both idyllic locations and both under the AIAC pilots’ flight paths. Council had previously stated that because the DA was for the building of offices and classrooms it was only required to notify residents nearest the airport, a fact Stephen Gow from the JRPP disputed.

CATALOGUE SALE ON NOW

He said that the operation of the aircraft was a key component to the DA’s approval and they couldn’t divorce themselves from aircraft noise and buildings. Chair of the JRPP, Garry West, said that to ignore aircraft noise if the project was to go ahead would mean he was derelict in his duties. President of the Kempsey Flying Club and a nearby resident to the airport, John Dunn, also spoke at the meeting. While the flying club supported training of pilots at Kempsey Airport and remained neutral to the DA process, it believed the massive extension of flying hours suggested would severely affect nearby residents. The flying club was also worried about the traffic pattern and noise assessment, which it felt was grossly understated. Taking over available airport hangar space, changing the arrangements to freehold from leasehold and building offices and classrooms fronting the taxiways was also a concern for the club, as was the fact Kempsey Airport may not be physically able to accommodate the amount of air traffic proposed. As there is no control tower at Kempsey Airport, pilots operate on a two-way radio communication system to maintain separation and movement in the ground and air. • Continued next page

fight local airport change • From previous page Mr Dunn explained that other pilots were having difficulty communicating with the applicant’s pilots and feared safety was at risk with the huge saturation of airspace being proposed. Nearby resident and councillor, Leo Hauville, also spoke at the meeting and read out a submission from Booroongen Djugun Ltd, which stated that proposed airport expansion would make the continuation of its college and aged-care facility, that employs 70 per cent of Aboriginal workers, unviable. Mr Hauville then read out an online petition, which had hundreds of signatures. Impassioned speaker, Marcus Skipper, from Dondingalong believed the sky above the Macleay was a precious community asset that should not be for sale to foreign multi-nationals. The issues concerning other speakers were whether KSC was being compensated financially from the AIAC, late submissions would have been of value to the JRPP, safety of trucking in pilots and fuel along country roads, aircraft noise and turning Kempsey from a food bowel and nature’s wonderland to a multi-national airport. Representatives for the AIAC spoke next and addressed intelligent questions from the planning panel. When it was discovered there was an initial DA still in operation that listed flight restrictions, the JRPP called an adjournment so council staff could produce the document, and the current Memorandum of Understanding. Each member of the planning panel, Stephen Gow, Pamela Westing, Garry West, Rhonda Hoban and Daniel Walsh, then discussed those documents and the current DA. They then aired their concerns and experience. In the end, Stephen Gow moved that the panel defer approval for the project so noise impacts of actual flight data of relevant aircraft in use at the

Members of the Northern Joint Regional Planning Panel tasked with making a decision about a DA to expand operations at Kempsey Airport site and under the flight path be independently assessed. Other issues of concern for the planning panel were social ramifications, health, safety, traffic safety and soil contamination. At 5pm the motion to defer was seconded and carried unanimously among the planning panel to great cheers and a standing ovation from the crowd. “I hope the panel has demonstrated that we have listened to the public,” Mr West said. Mr Ulrick from the Save Kempsey Airport Action Group thanked the planning panel on behalf of the community. “We look forward to responsible and open discussion with council, which is what we asked for in the first place,” he said.

Trades are not GAL ‘second class’

KERRY MACKAY Brought to you by 2WAY FM

How long have you lived in or around the Macleay? I was born and bred at Eungai Rail. After a short stint in Sydney I returned to Kempsey with my first husband to start a family in 1980 and have lived and worked here in Kempsey since. What do you love most about the Macleay? Great friendship networks, that we have great beaches or to the other end of the spectrum the mountains and bush. Where do you work and what do you love about your work? My husband Robert and I own, run and work at Randalls Business Equipment. I love being able to service our customer base/network, meeting their stationary and office furniture needs. That we have a great team of people working with us with great product and local knowledge. What do you like least about your work? Nothing. How do you start your day? Up and about early giving our ‘rotty’ Vonnie and her pup Harry obedience training. Have brekkie then into the shop to catch people out and about early and then a cup of tea with Anne while we debrief plan. What do you do in your spare time? What is spare time? I love photography and scrapbooking, music and being home with our dogs. What is the achievement you are most proud of? A very happy marriage, two beautiful adult children who are financially independent, working and contributing to their own communities.

IN a society with boundless opportunity and diversity, we have developed a worrying fixation with the university pathway to career success. Don’t get me wrong - university is important, and I am pleased that successive governments have made it easier for more students to study at university. But I am also frustrated that trades and technical education are viewed by many as a second-class choice. That attitude is just plain wrong, and it’s having a profound impact on our economy. Trades aren’t just a good backup option. A career in the trades can provide a high income, vocational fulfilment, opportunities to own and run a business and the chance to make a tangible contribution to our community. Australia is currently experiencing shortages in many trades. The official skills shortage list from the Department of Employment notes a lack of motor mechanics, auto electricians, bricklayers, stonemasons, glaziers, butchers, cabinet makers, tilers, locksmiths, welders, and more. That means there are skills in great demand with few candidates willing or able to fill the roles.

THE COWPER REPORT With Luke Hartsuyker

Federal Member for Cowper

Many of these trades are well-paid and potentially offer great lifestyle choices with the flexibility that comes from running your own business. Trades can also be less vulnerable to outsourcing - you cannot have your new bathroom tiled by someone in an overseas call centre or your head gasket replaced by Amazon! Yet the common negative attitude about trades and tradies remains, and we are seeing a continued downward trend in apprentice numbers as a result, with the number of young people starting an apprenticeship decreasing each year since 2011. There is more than one pathway to achieve a rewarding, fulfilling career, and I encourage young people to also consider a career in the trades as another occupational possibility.

Town Square work THE northern end of Port Macquarie’s Horton Street and Town Green East will soon benefit from major facelifts, with preliminary works about to start. The project will see the construction of a new Town Square (at the northern end of Horton Street) and Stage 1 of an upgrade to the Town Green to ensure these spaces meet community needs now and into the future. This will result in far superior, more vibrant and useable spaces for the many community events, experiences and activities that occur. Preliminary works to prepare for Town Square construction are due to start this week with some tree and vegetation removal and limited site excavations occurring during the following week. During these works there will be restricted vehicular access to the Town Square loop, with additional disabled parking being provided in Clarence Street. Pedestrian access and access to businesses will be maintained at all times. In 2015 council adopted a master plan that looked to develop a Town Square as a multipurpose space that is modern, usable and accessible ... with wider footpaths, shade trees and planting, new seating and feature lighting. “Our aim is for the Town Square and Town Green to become more popular recreational spaces right in the heart of Port Macquarie, and act as major drawcards for locals and visitors alike,” said Council Director Jeffery Sharp. “On any given day these areas are a hive of recreational, pedestrian and vehicular activity.”

A word that is sure to bamboozle

A FEW years ago a film was made called Bamboozled. I didn’t see it and I don’t think it was much of a film (please don’t write in and tell me you enjoyed it) but it had a huge cast of leading characters. In some countries it was called It’s Showtime. It was also called The Very Black Show in France. The word bamboozle was from my younger days and I always thought it was a cant word (in other words, a word you don’t want to know.) You would be surprised at the words that I always believed were made up until I later discovered they were in the dictionaries. By the time I discovered that it was too late to use them. (Somebody mentioned dictionaries and asked me if all dictionaries used the same definitions. They don’t, but many people believe they should.) Bamboozle goes back at least 300 years. The first use in print that I could discover was in 1703, when dramatist Colly Cibber said sham proofs were intended to bamboozle him. You probably have used bamboozle yourself. My Macquarie says it means to deceive by trickery or impose upon. Then it says to mystify or deceive. It says the word is of cant origin. Heinemann says basically the same thing. It gives an example: “I was completely bamboozled by

my

LAURIE BARBER

the time he finished explaining it to me”. Collins says it is an informal word that is intended to gain some advantage. It gives an example: “The sermons were intended to bamboozle the workers into obedience”. Webster says the origins are uncertain but the meaning is intended to hoax. Then we come to Samuel Johnson, whose first real dictionary was thrust upon the public in 1755. He says bamboozle was a cant word not used in grave writings. But it still meant to deceive or confound. A bamboozler was a cheat. (I came across a word from Kate Burridge. A bootylicious woman was a woman with an attractive rear. It has nothing to do with bamboozle, but I just had to mention it. I have never used it.) Kate Burridge in her book does say bamboozle is highly respectable today. John Ayto says bamboozle is a mystery word

that first appeared in print in 1703. My big dictionary says it was mentioned in the Tatler in the context of ‘the continued corruption of the English tongue’. He suggests it might be of Scottish origin. My big dictionary says bamboozle first appeared in print in 1703. It mentioned that government by bamboozle always presented considerable advantages at first sight. I know the feeling. The word bamboozle has given us some other words, Such as bamboozled, bamboozler, bamboozlement and bamboozling, It gives an example of bamboozling with the comment ‘all the good language was lost upon him’. But you can also get bamboozler jelly beans or bamboozler friends. Of course, if you do not know the answer to a question, you can always try to bamboolzle the questioner. I have tried that a few times. Sometimes it works; mostly it doesn’t. A few weeks ago I mentioned twin beds (referring to a long time ago) and I received a few comments. Let’s just say that next time I get married I will not order twin beds for my wedding night. lauriebarber.com; lbword@midcoast.com.au

Beating cancer, step by step By SUE PATERICK

A wet Hayley Pearce and Jay Allen on their way to Kempsey late last week as part of the Longest Melanoma March

Associate Professor Jonathan Stretch with melanoma survivors Jay Allen and Renee Marchment still smiling despite torrential rain as they take part in the Longest Melanoma March, a 1200-kilometre walk from Brisbane to Sydney to raise funds and spread awareness of this killer disease “I had no idea melanoma could spread so aggressively.” He credits the Melanoma Institute Australia (MIA) for saving his life. “They operated on me and cleared the cancer from my groin,” Jay said. He also underwent immunotherapy and has been cancer free for nine years. Hayley Pearce from Sydney was accompanying Jay on his march from Stuarts Point to Kempsey because she had lost her Mum to melanoma.

The rain had finally set in for that last stretch and while she was wet, Hayley felt inspired because so many people had stopped them to share their stories. “It was just what we needed to get to the end of the day,” she said. Jay feels privileged to have beaten melanoma and wants to warn everyone to be sun safe. Apart from being very fit, he is passionate about the cause and encourages people to get regular skin checks and to be vigilant regarding any spot that changes on their body.

Jay and his entourage spent the Friday night at Crescent Head before walking to Port Macquarie’s Westport Park on Saturday March 18. Associate Professor Jonathan Stretch, one of the incredible doctors at MIA, joined Jay on the Port Macquarie leg. He was coincidently the treating surgeon for Renee Marchment, so a very powerful roadside reunion took place with doctor and patient embracing with joy and appreciation of the road they had walked together 12 years ago. On Saturday night, Paula Jackson, a Stage Four Melanoma patient, organised a special fundraising dinner at Abundance Nursery and Café at Sancrox. It was a fabulous event with money raised going directly to support the vital research needed to find a cure for this devastating disease. He may have been soaking while still on the road last Sunday, but Jay is confident he will make it across the finish line at the final leg of the Longest Melanoma March at Barangaroo in Sydney on Sunday, April 2. DESPITE last Friday’s pouring rain and strong winds, melanoma survivor, Jay Allen, was powering through his 1200-kilometre walk from Brisbane to Sydney. Jay and 106 co-walkers, who have all been touched by melanoma, are taking part in the Longest Melanoma March to raise funds and spread awareness of a disease that kills more young Australians aged between 20 and 39 than any other single cancer. While his walking companions change each day, Jay gets inspiration from them all. “It’s a tough walk,” he said. “But having people walk with me really lifts me up. “It makes it easier to get out and walk when you know what people went through.” Halfway through his incredible 29-day journey, Jay called into Kempsey on Friday, March 17, to be met by representatives from the community, several local schools and Councillors Bruce Morris and Leo Hauville. Cr Hauville made a welcome speech on behalf of Mayor Liz Campbell, who was unable to attend. Renee Marchment from Crescent Head Public School, who raised $2000 to walk with Jay on his leg to Port Macquarie the following day, also attended the welcome. Renee is a melanoma survivor too and Crescent Head Public School received two vouchers from Akubra Hats to acknowledge their fundraising efforts and participation in the Longest Melanoma March. Jay, who hails from the Southern Highlands of NSW, was diagnosed with stage three melanoma in 2008 at the age of 32. It started as a mole on his ankle that spread up into the lymph nodes in his groin. “I was just really scared,” Jay said.

Jay is the Shelly Beach ‘Super Hero’ • From Page 1 “Out of all the rescues I’ve done, this was the first time in my life I was scared, it was really hard,” he said. “I was down on the beach for a morning swim when Robyn (another local, Robyn Sparkes) said that someone was in trouble right out the front, off the rocks. “At first I thought it was just rocks, but I looked again and I could see this head out the front. I told Brian (Barrow) to get on the rocks and while I’ve done a lot of surf life saving in my time and knew what to do, it was still pretty treacherous, it was one of the hardest I’ve done. “The rip took me out and I saw this head go under the water so I got out there and pulled her up like a cave man. I spun her around and got her on her side and told her to just float and we will swim across the rip to the other side and for the first time in my whole life it didn’t work and we started going out. “Then Brian came in and eventually we got her out, but it took about 20 minutes until we got her in. Her poor husband was sitting in the car reading a book and didn’t know what was going on.” Joy could not thank her rescuers enough. “Without Jay Corr and Brian Barrow’s willingness to put themselves at risk, I may not have survived,” she said from her Mona Vale home. “My grateful thanks are extended to them and to Robyn Sparkes, who alerted Jay and Brian to my situation and called an ambulance. “Ambulance officers, Alison and Simon, and wonderful nursing and medical and X-ray staff at Port Macquarie Hospital treated and comforted me. I’ve always found everyone very friendly in Port Macquarie and there’s a nice community feel about the place.” Later, after the rescue, Joy tracked Jay down to thank him again. “She said thanks and gave me a box of chocolates,” said Jay. “She also phoned me a couple of days later to thank me, but I was just glad she was alive.” And Jay’s lifesaving antics just keep continuing. “And of course the next day, same thing happened,” he laughed. “The woman I saved looks at me and says ‘Jay?’ and it’s my (theatre) stage manager. I said ‘we’ve got a big expensive show coming you can’t be doing this!” Joy says she will continue making her yearly trips to Port Macquarie, but hasn’t been swimming since the incident on March 12 due to leg and rib injuries. So if you’re swimming at Shelly beach, it might be worth checking if Jay is around.

Who’s who in our ‘team’ JUST over 30 candidates stood in the last Port Macquarie-Hastings Local Government elections where nine positions were contested. There were two sitting councillors who did not contest the last election whilst the other seven decided to re-contest. The result? The seven recontesting councillors were re-elected with two new councillors elected to round out the nine. There were three candidates who ran for mayor, with Peter Besseling ultimately being reelected to the role. There was a good challenge from two solid candidates who went close to knocking him off, but they fell just short. The Port Macquarie-Hastings area elected the Besseling bloc who include Rob Turner, Justin Levido and Geoff Hawkins. Information revealed at the last election showed that the Besseling bloc voted the same way more than 90% of the time in the council chambers. Rob Turner has a background as a pharmacist as well as being on the campaign team for both Rob Oakeshott and Peter Besseling in previous State and Federal elections.

The Rinse Cycle

By Adam Roberts - Former Councillor, Port MacquarieHastings Council

Justin Levido, a solicitor, shares a local firm with the current Port Macquarie Chamber of Commerce president. Prior to running as a councillor candidate Justin also held the position of president of the local branch of the Liberal Party which he gave up to support the Besseling campaign. Geoff Hawkins scraped through on the back of the Besseling vote in both the last two elections as the number four candidate on the group ticket. Sharon Griffiths was re-elected and has a solid background as a small business owner of a long-established and well respected hardware business in Wauchope.

Lisa Intemann, seems to be career councillor with more than 16 years as a councillor out of the last 20 years. With that run only being broken by a stint on the sidelines after being sacked as a councillor by the State Government over the Glasshouse issue. Mike Cusato owns and operates a large fruit and vegetable business in Port Macquarie where he has more than two-decades of small business experience. Lee Dixon was elected as the number two candidate on the Cusato Group ticket and currently sits on one of the top rungs of a multi-level marketing scheme selling wellness products. Peter Alley was elected as the lead candidate on the Country Labor Group ticket after having run unsuccessfully in numerous State and Federal and Local Government elections in the preceding six years. Persistence paid off. Peter Besseling doesn’t have a noted business or strategic planning background but has solid credentials as a professional footballer.

April named top student HASTINGS District Respite Care (HDRC) Aboriginal Disability Support Worker, April Crutcher, pictured, has been awarded the Port Macquarie TAFE Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander Student of the Year 2016 award during a recent awards ceremony. Ms Crutcher was nominated by a teacher from her Diploma of Community Services, which she finished in October 2016. Not long after, April began working with the team at HDRC Services in a Disability Support Worker role, which sees her working mostly one on one with indigenous clients. “I’ve learnt so much on the job since starting in October; and it’s very selfrewarding knowing that my work here is helping others,” said Ms Crutcher. The Port Macquarie TAFE Awards of Excellence ceremony featured Industry Student Awards and the major awards of Student of the Year and Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander Student of the Year. Ms Crutcher is now able to nominate for the Regional TAFE Awards. Further advancement would see Ms Crutcher potentially reach the NSW and then National award ceremonies. “It’s a very exciting time for April and the HDRC team are very proud of her achievements,” HDRC Manager Julie Dunn said. During her studies at TAFE April also completed a Certificate II in Ausland and is currently undertaking a Bachelor of Social Work through Charles Sturt University.

people to focus on what they actually want to be doing with their life and “howI get they want to be living their life

Declutter your home and life By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC

COME along to the life-changing workshop that is saving people’s homes, businesses, and health. The Less is More Declutter Workshop in Kempsey will be teaching people to not only declutter their belongings, but also their lives. “It’s about being more mindful of the things people have around them, whether that’s possessions, people, or being more mindful of the environment and the waste impact,” said Katrina Gleave, professional organiser from ‘Your Kaos Organised’. Katrina believes that by decluttering the home, people are essentially decluttering their life, making room for what is truly important. “I get people to focus on what they actually want to be doing with their life and how they want to be living their life,” Katrina said. “My clients have gained financial benefits from being more mindful about what they’re purchasing. Less stress is also a big one because clutter has made people anxious and depressed. “People learn to say ‘no’, so they start cleaning out their calendars and instead of doing stuff they think they should do or feel obligated to, they end up saying ‘no, sorry, not for me, I’m going to spend time doing what’s important to me and my family’. “I did one lady’s whole house in a day, and

she said within a week her business had improved because she had more clarity to focus on her business and she was focusing on the clients that she did want, not the ones she didn’t want.” The workshop will also have a focus on where all these unwanted items will go once they have been decluttered. “People often get on a roll and they just start chucking stuff and recyclables just go in the normal bin instead of being donated,” explained Katrina.“6,000 kilos of textiles and clothing go to land fill every ten minutes in Australia, so it is important people get the right information.” This workshop is for anyone and everyone, and it is encouraged to bring along those family members that have been hoarding for years. “One of the big issues is elderly people,” Katrina said. “A lot of them move out of homes and they’ve got stuff from parents, aunts and uncles and hand me downs. Older parents are holding onto things thinking their kids will want them… and the kids don’t.” Katrina will be presenting the workshop on behalf of MIDWASTE at the Kempsey Shire Library, situated on the corner of Elbow and Tozer streets, West Kempsey, on Tuesday April 4 from 3pm-5pm. This workshop is hosted by MIDWASTE and Kempsey Shire Council and is a free event. Afternoon tea will be provided. To register call the library on 6566 3210.

Pop in for business cruise

Volunteers attack the last remaining accessible patch of bitou bush near the ‘Golden Arch’ on Diamond Head during the 2016 camp

‘Bitou battle’ is on again By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC ‘KYLIE’S Camp’ is calling on volunteers. The annual conservation camp is in its 38th year at the Mid North Coast’s iconic Crowdy Bay National Park. However, volunteers are needed to continue the fight against the mass germination of the bitou bush. “We are very much winning the battle, it’s eradicated from all the accessible places on Diamond Head,” said Sue Baker, co ordinator of Kylies Camp. “The beach north from Diamond head camping ground is beautifully cleaned up. We are half way to having Kylie’s Beach and the beach all the way down to Crowdy Bay completed. “But it only works if you keep following it up because birds bring seeds in from surrounding infested areas.” The project started in 1979 and has continued

on thanks to committed locals. “There’s such a massive amount of work and money that has gone into it over the years,” Sue said. “The thing is, you can’t afford to stop, because the weed will come back. You’ve got to keep going. There’s just a group of us who love it as a place. It’s a beautiful environment, and we want to do what we can for it.” When the area was sand mined in the 1960s and the sand mining finished, the bitou bush was brought from South Africa to stabilize the sand dunes. Unfortunately, the plant completely took over. “It completely alters the natural eco-system,” said Sue. “The other big weed is lantana. After the bush fire in 2013 all this wattle from Western Australia came in and it just formed really big thick patches and nothing else grows and it’s not native to our area, so we are working on that too.” However, Sue, who has now been involved

in Kylies Camp for 20 years, says what really brings people back each year, is the camaraderie at these camps. “The volunteers can work during the day, they can drop in a fishing line, have a swim, and people just love to sit around the campfire and talk to each other and eat together,” explained Sue. “There are lots of really interesting people who come. We’ve got regulars, some of them come as far away as Sydney and we get new people each year.” 2017 is the second year of a NSW Environmental Trust grant of $97,000 that is being used to mop up a mass germination of bitou bush. So why not come and have a short working holiday with Kylies camp from April 4 -9 at Crowdy Bay National Park, north of Taree and South of Laurieton. Phone Sue on 6559 7134 for further information and to book in.

Speed limit increase

MEMBER for Port Macquarie, Leslie Williams has announced that the speed limit will be increased on the Oxley Highway at Port Macquarie from this week to improve journey times for motorists. Mrs Williams said the existing 90kmh speed limit will be increased to 100 kmh for around 4.5 kilometres from 100 metres west of the Wrights Road roundabout to the 60kmh sign on the approach to the service centre roundabout. “Roads and Maritime Services carried out a speed zone review last year after representations from the community,” Mrs Williams said. “The existing 90 kmh speed limit on this section was implemented when the Oxley Highway bypass opened in 2011. “Since then, a wire rope barrier has been installed in the centre median, further improving safety for motorists and allowing the speed limit to be raised. The speed zone review found the speed limit should be increased to 100 km/h to bring it in line with other dual lane highways.”

It’s game on in Kendall

By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC

THE Kendall Tennis Club committee has finally achieved their dream clubhouse. “It’s amazing, we couldn’t have done it without the work of the volunteers and tradesmen who donated their labour,” said Wendy Hudson, President of the Kendall Tennis Club. “Put it this way, we had some funding over the last year, but without those tradesmen we wouldn’t have such a nice clubhouse. It’s tiled, it’s got ducted air conditioning, and it’s got fantastic facilities for Kendall.” It has been a long 12-year battle for Wendy and the tennis players of Kendall, but they have come out on top. “The Kendall Tennis Club, the old centre,

All zone 14 were washed out and have been rescheduled for Sunday 9th April. Keep your eye on the notice board for teams, times etc. Note on Tuesday afternoons starting at 2.30 there will be pennant training drills with thanks to Geoff Mitchell and Mike Rand. Following the recent trials held at Kempsey Heights the following Port City playerd have been selected in the 2017 Dooker – Eggert shield to play zone 14 bowls association at Taree Leagues on 2nd April. Jack Lewis will lead for Peter Taylor, plus the team of John Hrabak – Greg Keft – Phil Baker skip Greg Brims. In the seniors (over 60s) for the Millennium Shield, Ian Binder will lead for Bruce Anderson and Ken Paulsen 2nd for Bryce Stweart. In the Challenge Shield team for junior bowlers, John Page and Bohdi Parsons have been selected. The Easter carnival this year starts on Easter Saturday 15th April with ladies triples, Sunday is mixed triple and Monday is men’s Pairs. There will be a handicap triples May 9th to 11th The PCMBC bowls calendar for March and April is on the board. The full 2017 calendar is on our bowls web site under “Calendar 17” Social Bowls: Please note we would encourage social bowlers be back in the club by 4pm to allow for a timely presentation and raffles. No dead ends.

“To get the president of Tennis NSW out to a small country town like this to open our clubhouse is pretty big for us,” said Wendy. The clubhouse was made possible through a Community Development Grant from the state government, which Local MP Leslie Williams announced two years ago. The furnishing and shade shelters come from the federal government’s stronger communities grant. The Kendall Tennis Clubhouse opening will take place on Sunday, March 26, from 10am –2pm. The official unveiling will be around 1.30pm and there will be a full canteen selling morning tea and lunch throughout. For more information about the Kendall Tennis Clubhouse opening, call Wendy Hudson on 0419634848.

had just three synthetic courts and an old clubhouse built in 1962,” Wendy explains. “However, we have a membership of over 300 people and those three courts weren’t adequate. We had waiting lists and kids couldn’t even play. So for about 12 years we’ve been fighting to get more courts in Kendall. “It has taken those 12 years to raise a lot of money and we’ve built a new site and have put in three new courts which were opened in August 2015. “During that time we were working out of a shed as our clubhouse at that venue, and then over the last 16 months we’ve built a clubhouse, and now we’re opening the clubhouse and facilities, which cost over $700,000.” The Kendall Tennis Club is rich in history

and has won a number of awards such as the Tennis Australia’s Most Outstanding Tennis Community 2010 award. It is a not only a breeding ground for rising tennis stars, but also a community hub. “Every Friday we have about 110 children come through here,” said Wendy. “Over half our membership are children. There’s also an adult comp, we play four nights a week. So the courts are used a lot.” The tennis centre’s official opening this Sunday (March 26) will be full of activities for all ages. There will also be a host of dignitaries, including the President of Tennis NSW, Greg Doyle, local MPs Leslie Williams and David Gillespie as well as mayor Peter Besseling.

YOUTH Week 2017 comes to life this April, kicking off on the 2nd and running until the 11th with an exciting series of events and activities taking place in the Port Macquarie-Hastings region. Youth Week events are planned by young people, for young people, and are all about inclusion, opportunities, creativity and fun. It is an opportunity for young people to express their ideas and views, act on issues that affect their lives, showcase their talents, celebrate their contribution to the community and create and enjoy activities and events. This year’s Youth Week has a theme of ‘Get Involved, Be Heard, Make a Difference’, and the Hastings Youth Advisory Council (YAC) has pulled out all of the stops, volunteering months of their time to organise and present events that will engage and excite.

Events include: The Region Youth Music Conference (registration required); Youth Week Youth Opportunities Festival; Youth Week Skateboard Competition; Instagram Photo Competition; Library Youth Week Events; Waves & Melodies Festival; Scavenger Hunt All events are free and although youth focussed, everyone is welcome. Youth week 2017 is organised by the Hastings Youth Advisory Council (YAC). The YAC provides a forum for young people to have a say on community issues that affect them and their peers and to provide input into Council’s youth policy development. HASTINGS youth have received a welcome boost for their career aspirations from the developers of the Sovereign Hills Master Planned Community. A commitment by the Lewis Land Group to a perpetual sponsorship of $2500 a year for the Hastings Education Fund (HEF) was announced recently at the Charles Sturt University campus by the Chief Executive Officer, Chris Calvert. “The Sovereign Hills project is going to be a part of the Port Macquarie community for many years to come, and we want to support the younger members of our community to achieve their goals,” said Mr Calvert. “Initiatives such as the Hastings Education Fund provide a great opportunity for this.” This year the fund supported 31 local school leavers with grants totalling over $60,000. These grants are assisting local students to pursue courses in a wide range of fields including medicine, engineering, science, nursing, teaching and music.

Some of the grant recipients are studying locally while many other have travelled to metropolitan centres and interstate to study the course of their choice. HEF gives priority to assisting young people who have a need for support in order for them to pursue their career goal, as well as an outstanding commitment to that goal. “The Lewis Land Group’s decision to assist local students to transition to further education and training through their support of the HEF, shows that they are a business that is prepared to give back to the local community,” explains Hastings Education Fund Chair, Jim O’Brien. “Many more wonderful young people applied for grants which we could not support.” When asked why the Australia-wide Lewis Land Group selected the Hastings over other north coast locations, CEO Chris Calvert explained that the growing education and health hub was a key factor.

Round 4 - get the dart board GET a pin. Throw a dart. Ask your four-year-old niece. These are some of the best go-to options in selecting winners in this year’s NRL tipping comp. It is a fair-dinkum lottery. For all you people who are doing well and leading tipping comps – good luck to you. You are either absolute NRL freaks, are having a very lucky run … or know absolutely nothing about the game. As far as Your Local Independent (YLI) is concerned, the form guide has gone out the window. For two weeks in a row ranks outsiders just keep lobbing. The bookmakers must be having a field day. The Titans beating the Eels. Manly smashing the Cows, in Townsville! The Dragons edging the Sharks. Go figure. But the great thing about tipping comps is redemption is only as far away as the next round.

For a long time YLI has urged tipsters to look past the form guide and into the psychology of each game. Is there a hidden edge? Well that rationale has never been more apt. Often we tipsters aren’t privy to the inner machinations of a club that is either setting them up to play a blinder or a shocker. But we can look at some of the obvious signs. OK … get out that dart board. Rabbitohs v Roosters (Thursday, March 23, 7.05pm, ANZ Stadium, Sydney): Both teams are coming off a win, but the Roosters certainly look the goods. They have started the season in perfect fashion and you would think they would have the form to beat Souths. The bookies think so with the Rabbits out to $3.05. Rabbits have lost three through suspension, while the Roosters are likely to be unchanged. • Your Local Independent tips: Roosters Panthers v Newcastle (Friday, March 24,

5pm, Pepper Stadium, Penrith): While the Knights certainly are better this year, the Panthers remain top four chances in most tipsters’ books. They lost a close one to the Roosters and will be even more determined this weekend. • Your Local Independent tips: Panthers Broncos v Canberra (Friday, March 24, 7.05pm, Suncorp Stadium, Brisbane): OK, first upset. The Broncos have had a tougher first up draw than anyone – Sharks, Cowboys and then the Storm. They are back home, but must be feeling mentally and physically weary from such a brutal start. The Raiders, like the Broncs, have just the one win, but were very slick in thumping the Tigers last weekend. • Your Local Independent tips: Raiders Sea Eagles v Bulldogs (Saturday, March 25, 3.30pm, Lottoland, Brookvale, Sydney): Two teams who are both rumoured to be having trouble off-field with growing doubts over their

coaching staff. Both coming off away wins, so tough call. The Dogs have been out of sorts, but their trademark toughness should be enough. • Your Local Independent tips: Bulldogs Eels v Sharks (Saturday, March 25, 6pm, ANZ Stadium, Sydney): Both teams coming off surprise losses last weekend. Who wants this more? The Sharks have the premiership trophy at home. The Eels haven’t touched it since 1986. Last weekend was a red-hot poker reminder for Parramatta. • Your Local Independent tips: Eels Titans v Cowboys (Saturday, March 25, 8pm, Cbus Super Stadium, Gold Coast): Upset number two. On paper the Cows should win this one. Yes, they are down on troops, but will be shaken by last weekend’s loss. However, again, all and sundry are underplaying the Gold Coast. They are building. • Your Local Independent tips: Titans Tigers v Storm (Sunday, March 26, 3pm, Leichhardt Oval, Sydney): There is a simple formula in sport. Coach sacked = team wins. No way 23rd – 26th March 2017 the Tigers should topple the unbeaten Thursday 23rd March, 8.05pm, ANZ Stadium Storm, but the formula says they will. Rabbitohs vs Roosters • Your Local Independent Friday 24th March, 6pm, Pepper Stadium Panthers vs Knights tips:Tigers. But that mantle is Saturday 25th March, 9pm, Cbus Stadium now sitting with the Dragons after they Titans vs Cowboys upset the Panthers in Rd 1 and then the Sunday 26th March, 4pm, Leichhardt Oval Wests Tigers vs Storm Sharks last weekend.
