Sporting chance By SUE PATERICK A COLLABRATIVE effort between Kempsey Shire Council, South West Rocks (SWR) Sport & Recreation Association and the SWR Country Club could see a multi-million dollar sports’ facility built in the seaside town. Proposed by the SWR Sport & Recreation Association, the concept for the SWR High Performance Centre is to erect a three-storey multi-sport facility on the western side of the current sporting fields. This state-of-the-art facility will incorporate a grandstand, gender-specific change rooms and will be fully disability compliant with a lift, 18 wheelchair spaces and upgraded disability access from the carpark. On level one there will be the amenities, change rooms, canteen, administration, officials’ area and storage. Level two will house the high-performance facilities, 150 grandstand seats, 12 wheelchair spaces, a flexible-use community and activerecreation area, amenities, bar and kitchen, offices and more storage. Level three will provide 629 grandstand seats, six wheelchair spaces, and a media, broadcast and coaches area. The total cost of the project will be $3.3 million. Given the NSW Office of Sport is providing grant funding to increase the number and standard of regional sporting facilities and to increase participation in sport the SWR High Performance Centre seems a perfect fit.

The eastern perspective of the SWR High Performance Centre being proposed to be built at the current sporting fields So Kempsey Shire Council (KSC) is currently applying for a grant of $2,557,995 to fund the sport centre. The remaining $742,005 will be contributions from the SWR Country Club, KSC and Hadlow Design Services. Funding will also be sought to upgrade the sporting-field lighting and for perimeter fencing. If the grant application is successful, it is anticipated that the centre will be completed

at the end of 2019, allowing for a 12-month construction period. The economic benefits of such a modern sport centre for SWR include improved sporting facilities for players and spectators, and the ability to host regional, state and national events, fixtures, championships, pre-elite training camps and coaching clinics. Non-sport functions, conferences, meetings, festivals, markets, and trade shows can also be

Entry to the Yarrahapinni Festival is $2 per person and children are free. If you need more entertainment just sit back listen to the music and check out the wildlife. Pelicans adorn wooden jetties that jut into the wide Macleay River along the leafy riverbank Sacred ibis and seagulls wade onshore and sea eagles, osprey and hawks soar overhead looking for bream, whiting, flathead and blackfish. Dolphins, stingrays and turtles also cruise the waterway where yachts, dinghies and motorboats voyage out to sea from Fishermans Reach, passing Freedom Island and oyster leases.

Situated on the North Arm of the Macleay River, life in Stuarts Point has always been linked to the river. In the late 1880s the river mouth was located at Grassy Head so Stuarts Point was the first port of call for seagoing vessels heading upriver to Kempsey. Schooners, ketches and small steamers docked at its wharf, not far from a gracefullyarched footbridge that leads to Stuarts Point’s long golden beach today. Back then the river was 350 metres wide and up to four metres deep. from

Named after Scotsman John Stuart, who settled at Double Corner (now Grassy Head) and began building ships, Stuarts Point thrived. Hennessy’s Sawmill buzzed, and bullock teams brought huge hardwood logs down from the surrounding forests of Eungai, Yarrahapinni and Barraganyatti. Stuarts Point lost prominence in 1893 when a flood changed the Macleay River’s course and a new river entrance was opened at South West Rocks in 1902. Today Stuarts Point is renowned for fishing and boating, and as a fertile growing region for macadamias, avocados, bananas and other subtropical fruit. Its friendly village provides specialty shops, a bowling club, hotel, takeaways, tennis courts, a children’s playground, boat ramps and a shady barbeque area. On a clear day from the top of 498-metre Mount Yarrahapinni in the Yarriabini National Park you can almost see the entire Macleay Valley Coast. Significant to the Dunghutti and Gumbaynggirr nations, Yarriabini means ‘koala rolling’. For more information on the 2018 Yarrahapinni Festival at beautiful Stuarts Point go to www.yarrahapinnifestival.com/program/ or check out their Facebook page.

LIFE in Stuarts Point ebbs and flows with the Macleay River’s tides, but this August the riverside village, just north of South West Rocks, will explode with colour, fun and laughter at the biennial Yarrahapinni Festival. To be held on Friday, August 24, and Saturday, August 25, organisers want to thank the legion of volunteers and Lifetime Connect for their fantastic support in making this muchanticipated event possible. The fun will kick-off with the Small Schools Spectacular at 9.30am on Friday morning. Students from Stuarts Point, Scotts Head, Eungai and Medlow will participate in a Festival Games Pentathlon, sponsored by Dymocks and Arapala Macadamia Farms. The Festival and Art Exhibition will open officially at 6pm on Friday night in the Stuarts Point Community Hall, which by then will have been turned into an art gallery. Festival matriarchs Nicky Smith and Elaine Coleman will officiate the opening and the Yarriabini Choir and Stef Edwards will have your toes tapping when they perform. Tickets cost $10 at the door and refreshments will be provided. Saturday promises to be a day of fun-filled activity with the markets opening for business at 8am. Over 40 stalls will be selling everything from duck curry to dog coats. The Art Exhibition will be open all weekend including Sunday morning with a gold coin entry fee, and festival-goers can also vote for their favourite photograph of Stuarts Point. At 9am a Welcome Parade will leave the Stuarts Point Workers Club and head down into the village where the Gumbaynggirr Nation will perform a Welcome to Country. There will also be lots of entertainment for children with Troppo Bob, a jumping castle, face painting and a very popular pet show that has become a festival highlight. About midday there will be some laughs at the Dog and Owner Swim event. From mid-morning the village’s pretty riverside will be rocking when the Stuarts Point Friendly Grocer presents Music by the River. Eight acts including bands, duos and soloists will take the stage until 5.30pm. The live music begins at 9.30am with Gypsy jazz band Klepta Klezm. At 10.30am Gar will perform followed by Stef at 11.30am, Rory Ellis at 12.30pm, the Pelican Smugglers at 1.30pm, Bulldog Blues at 2.30pm and Johnny Thunderbolt at 3.45pm. Vault will headline the musical acts at 4.45pm. There will be a break in the music when the art and raffle prizes are drawn at 3.30.

LETTER WEEK OF THE

Now is the time for change

WITH 100% of NSW now in drought, it’s time for some serious action on climate change. But first things first - all of us in the climate movement acknowledge the very real suffering experienced by farmers and rural communities. Drought is soul-destroying for those on the front line and the sooner it breaks the better. However this is also the time for real action on climate policy. It’s time to do whatever we can while we still have a chance. Climate change is making droughts worse. It’s not causing them - that’s due to natural weather patterns - but it is making them worse. It’s also creating the conditions for hotter and more deadly heatwaves and more dangerous and unseasonal bush fires. Since Dorothea Mackellar wrote her poem My Country in 1908, human society has added 40% more carbon pollution to the atmosphere by burning coal, oil and gas, developing heavy industries, and destroying forests and woodlands. While invisible to human eyes, and proving no barrier to the sun’s rays, greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide, are very effective at trapping energy radiating off the land as infra red heat. Humans are adding pollution to the sky above us at the rate of 30 billion tonnes each year and we must cut back. Since 1980 our planet has

been absorbing the equivalent of four Hiroshima bombs’ worth of heat every second. Most of that extra heat has gone into the oceans, but some remains in the atmosphere, causing the world to warm. Global warming is creating climate change which is super-charging the extreme weather that Australia often experiences, making it worse. Global warming intensifies the drought cycle. As it gets warmer and evaporation increases, the ground gives up moisture and dries out. Drier regions of Australia are getting drier, with longer and more severe droughts. The current drought is devastating. Many on the front line are saying it’s the worst they can remember. Brian Egan is co-founder of the farm charity Aussie Helpers and says it’s the worst he’s ever seen. “It’s like a war zone in some places. Everything is just burnt dry - it’s dead and if it’s not dead, it’s dying. It’s quite frightening. I think a lot of people will be walking off - I’ve never seen bush people so poor in my life” (ABC Radio National Breakfast, 1/8/18). Unlike the Coalition government grant of $444 million to the Great Barrier Reef Foundation, charities helping farmers receive no government support. • Continued Page 5

Thumbs Up TO the staff at Port Macquarie Base Hospital where I’ve recently spent a week with a vicious attack of BPPV a type of vertigo which involves nausea and vomiting. Being a healthy, active woman of 64 years and not taking any medication, this attack turned my life upside down in more ways than one! I’m so very grateful for the ambulance men and various doctors and nurses, especially a physio therapist, who treated me with dignified respect, tenderness and encouragement until I had the confidence to come home. Bravo team at Port Base! Thumbs Up Thumbs Down is your chance to have your say. Malicious or defamatory submissions will not be accepted. TO the quick acting staff of Priceline Pharmacy, Horton Street, who came to my rescue when they saw me about to fall over when I got tangled with my dog leash when I tied her up around the street pole. Had it not been for their quick intervention I would have suffered severe consequences. Words cannot describe my immense gratitude.

Thumbs Down TO the lycra-clad cyclist who rudely abused an elderly driver on Crestwood Drive recently. Your disgusting language, gestures and aggression were uncalled for and are an embarrassment to our many civil and courteous cyclists.

be repeated next year for the full election. Just another means of syphoning more taxpayer’s money down the bottomless pit with all the parliamentary lifetime pension and entitlements. Throwing more good money after bad? If Mr Dutton decided to play nicely and there is no challenge beforehand, the Libs could limp their way to the Federal elections next year, campaign with a fresh leadership team and Mr Turnbull could resign gracefully at the end of his term. I don’t think this is going to happen – so far Mr Dutton’s track record has not reflected him playing very nicely – just look at his hard-line stance with immigration and refugees – not a great reflection of the calibre of our citizens to the outside world either, in my most humble opinion. With the feedback I get? It’s time for a clean sweep and start afresh – time for a parliament run by real people who are for the people, not career politicians who wouldn’t know their backsides from a hole in the ground. We don’t need full-on radicals, we need open-minded, big-picture people to lead our government to do what is both fair and right for all our citizens. We need real people who have lived real lives, done the hard yards, started with nothing and worked their way up. People who not only know how to, but will fight for their rights and those of their fellow citizens – for the best interests of all concerned. What we don’t need is constant infighting and bickering between the supposed pillars of our community – your job is to run the country – not act like your attending Play School.

I WOULD love to say a huge thank you to the ambulance drivers/paramedics and all the other staff involved in my care at Port Macquarie Base Hospital. I was extremely grateful for their concern and expertise. It’s good to know that we are really blessed living in Port Macquarie with such wonderful staff attached to the hospital. Thank you again.

Thumbs Down TO the ANZ bank for closing the Wauchope and Laurieton branches next month. If we want to actually talk to someone face to face it will be a 60km round trip from Wauchope and how many kilometres from Laurieton? Not everyone is computer literate. Thanks a lot ANZ give yourself a pay rise (again).

Thumbs Down TO the negatively geared body corporate and the tax grab industry that supported you in bankrupting me. Warning to first home buyers: You have no watchdog in an investors’ economy.

TUESDAY, August 21, 2018, 9.30am. The Liberal Party have just released their latest reality show across all platforms of media. How to self-implode a political party – For Dummies – starring PM Malcolm Turnbull and Peter Dutton, co-starring Julie Bishop and Tony Abbott. This will be available freeto-air, for as long as it takes to fight to the political death of one or more of the Liberal Party leaders/members and the victor rises like the phoenix from the flame … or the general public are distracted enough to forget that we have a country full of more urgent problems than watching a bunch of egotistical narcissists fight it out to be the king of the castle! I’m not surprised there was a challenge made for the leadership of the Liberal Party, most people I talk to believe our Prime Minister is out of touch, and only there to feather his own nest and those of his big business mates. I totally agree. The surprise was where the challenge came from - Peter Dutton with the backing of Tony Abbott. Wow! I knew Tony was still sucking on sour grapes from his disposal as PM however, I can’t believe he would seek revenge on the whole country by trying to oust Malcolm to install Peter! I don’t even want to imagine the outcome but many of the leading political journos are suggesting that there could be another challenge as early as today (Thursday) and there is a good chance Peter Dutton could become leader of the Libs and PM. Mmmm, what will that mean for us the general punter? Firstly if Peter Dutton does challenge the leadership again and did become PM, I can’t imagine Malcolm would resign from the ministry to just slink off to the backbench and continue to play the game. He’ll probably resign from politics completely and cause a by-election, an exercise which would need to

Orchid show also a real health boost

THE Macleay Valley Orchid Society’s Spring Show is not only an example of stunning plants, but also showcases an activity full of health benefits. This weekend locals will get the opportunity to see a huge display of orchids grown right here on the Mid North Coast. “We will have 50-80 different orchids on display,” said Donna Clarke, President of the Macleay Valley Orchid Society. “There will be orchids up for sale as well as orchid growers who are happy to give tips and ideas to help anyone who is having trouble growing their orchids, or for any beginners who want to know how to start.” The Spring Show has been going for 31 years and in that time the society has seen the therapeutic benefits of orchid growing. “My family live on a dairy farm and mum and I have been growing orchids for years,” explains Donna. “My dad had a heart attack and couldn’t do farm work, and he was getting depressed, so we got him into the orchid house and that turned him around and gave him another avenue.

“It was something that wasn’t too heavy or strenuous to do, and that was very therapeutic for him. “It’s also good for people who can’t get out and about too much. It gives them something to potter around with, and there are always a different orchids coming out into flower.” Donna says children are also encouraged to get involved. “We are really lucky with our society because we have had a few junior orchid growers,” Donna said. “We have even had a junior grower who is now an adult and when he is away his mum will bring his orchids to the show. So it’s really great for the whole family.” Come along to the Macleay Valley Orchid Society Spring Show on Saturday, August 25, from 10am-5pm and Sunday, August 26, from 9.30am-3pm at the Kempsey Heights Bowling Club. Entry is just a gold coin donation. For more information visit the society’s Facebook page at Macleay Valley Orchid Society.

• From Page 4 And unlike the Adani mega coal mine, also in northern Qld, farmers have not been promised unlimited access to artesian water free-of-charge for the next sixty years. Droughts have wide-ranging impacts on our health, agriculture, ecosystems, economy and water supplies. It is estimated that the Millennium drought cost $5 billion or 1% of GDP. Food lost to droughts world-wide is enough to feed 80 million people every year. If it goes on much longer we will all be on water restrictions and missing our favourite foods. Now is the time to be urging greater action from all levels of government. There are lots of things we can do but most need real leadership. Just as ordinary motorists (but not mining companies) have to pay fuel excise which goes to general revenue, so we should have a levy on the use of coal in electricity generation, with money going into a national disaster response and rebuilding fund. There are opportunities for regional Australia in responding to this drought with long-term

solutions. These include increased resilience to climate impacts, more energy independence, and lower electricity costs from wind and solar. Clean energy attracts jobs to regional areas and more than 28,000 jobs will be created if Australia generates half our energy from renewables by 2030. Farmers can add additional revenue streams from renewable energy. $30 million each year is already earned in lease payments to farmers and landholders hosting wind turbines and solar farms. Acting on climate change will attract jobs and investment to regional Australia. The group Farmers for Climate Action describe themselves as an alliance of farmers and leaders in agriculture. They are open to ‘anyone who eats and supports effective, urgent climate action’. The group is campaigning for a national plan on climate change and agriculture. Finally, give generously to charities that are providing assistance to farmers and rural communities in this, ‘The Big Dry’. Harry Creamer Co-founder of Climate Change Australia

Govt provides vital funding for local services THE COWPER REPORT

With Luke Hartsuyker

Federal Member for Cowper

LOCAL councils here on the Mid North Coast, and right around the country, are mainstays of our democracy and provide many of the basic services we enjoy. They are the tier of government closest to the people and perform many valuable tasks for ratepayers that deserve support, because rates alone aren’t enough to fund all that they do. Both of the other tiers of government recognise this and provide much needed backup, because they understand the importance of the services that councils deliver. A major element of support from the Commonwealth is in the form of Financial Assistance Grants. This year councils on the Mid North Coast - at Bellingen, Coffs Harbour, Kempsey, Nambucca and Port MacquarieHastings - will share in over $30 million. They are receiving their first grants now for 2018-19 in a program that has supported local government to the tune of $52 billion since it started in the mid 1970s. These are important annual grants for councils because how they spend that money is totally up to them, guided by what their communities want. Other forms of support are more specific. Roads to Recovery will provide $480 million to 2021-22 for council roads across the country, and our councils will benefit again this year. The $744 million Black Spot program targets, with councils, dangerous roads. The $480 million Bridges Renewal Program has helped councils repair or replace many old, mostly timber, structures to improve their safety and productivity. The $641 million Building Better Regions funding from the Commonwealth provides grants that help councils with significant local infrastructure projects, that create jobs, and boost local economies. The Commonwealth understands that councils play a big, often undervalued, role in making our communities good places to live and will continue to develop ways of sharing the load and improving services. These are strong examples of the reality that when all tiers of government work together, we maximise benefits.

Second chance for new projects $100 Million For New Tourism Projects In Regional NSW: $100 million is available for new regional tourism projects including large scale projects in the Port Macquarie electorate with round two of the Regional Growth – Environment and Tourism Fund now open. Up to $50 million will be available for regionally iconic tourism activation projects that will cost over $5 million. This time it’s about providing bigger grants to those signature projects that will give us the chance to cement our area’s status as a holiday and tourism hot spot and an all-around fantastic place to live. We’ve already seen what the first round can offer with $765,000 matched dollar for dollar by Port Macquarie-Hastings Council to enable the upgrade of the 9.2km scenic Coastal Walk in Port Macquarie. The remaining $50 million will be available for applicants who submitted strong applications but were unsuccessful at the Expression of Interest stage in round one. Our regional communities are brimming with great ideas and opportunities, and unfortunately the first time around we just couldn’t fund them all because of the high number of strong applications. Applications for the fund are now open and

CANBERRA CONNECTIONS With Dr David Gillespie Federal MP for Lyne

LOCAL sporting groups across the region are being encouraged to apply for funding under a new national $29.7million program being established by the Federal Coalition Government aimed at upgrading community sport infrastructure. Federal Member for Lyne Dr David Gillespie said the Community Sport Infrastructure grant program would enable sport and community organisations to apply for grants up to $500,000 to upgrade sporting infrastructure in 2018-19. Local sporting groups should consider projects that would help build participation in physical activity, community partnerships and inclusiveness. Sporting facilities are vital for inspiring physical activity and health, but also for building community spirit and pride. I’d like to take this opportunity to encourage sport and community groups to collaborate and think about projects that could enhance our facilities in our local community. Applications will remain open until September 14 and more information can be found at https://www.sportaus.gov. au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0008/677879/ CSI_Grant_Program_guidelines.pdf

Now, let’s get straight to point BEAT around (about) the bush originally meant what it says — somebody beating the bush so an animal hiding in the bush could “escape” and somebody else could kill it. These days, while retaining the original meaning, the phase has softened to express an unwillingness of people to do things in a hurry. Tomorrow will do. Or if you want to know something just ask, don’t beat around the bush. Beating around means not going straight to the point. George Gscoyne said in 1572: “He bet around the bush whyles others caught the birds.” They weren’t too strong in English in those days. Websters said beating around the bush represented a person trying to evade the truth by talking around the subject. Macquarie said avoid coming to the point. Collins said beating around the bush was speaking in an indirect manner. Beating around the bush was the preamble to the main event, which was the capturing of the birds. Grouse hunting and other forms of hunt still use beaters today. The phrase is old and first appeared in the

my

LAURIE BARBER

medieval poem Geneydes – a Romance In Seven-line Stanzas first published in 1440: “Butt as it hath be sayde full long agoo, Some bete the bussh and some the byrdes take.” It is in Trinity College, Cambridge, the early printed versions all having disappeared. Even at that early time the author’s implication was clearly “beting the bussh”. But around the bush wasn’t the only expression with beat in it. Beating was the infliction of repeated blows. Shakespeare said in Richard 111: “Why do Weepe so oft? And beate your brest?” Beating down or up was the same. Beat represented defeat in a sporting contest. Beat represented various technical uses, such as the manufacture of gold ingots. Beat represented sailing against the wind.

Then there is beat a drum, to produce a rhythmic sound. Or to beat over old ground, or to discuss topics already discussed. Or to beat a retreat. How about beat in jazz, or other music. Or a beat of the heart. Beat represented an exhaustion of the topic. Or the secretary beat the treasurer in the proposed increase in membership fees. Beat represented a diving tactic. And there are many other meanings of beat. For instance, beat swords into plowshares from the old testament, meant turn to peaceful activities. Or to beat or flog a dead horse, in other words, an animal or topic that no longer holds any interest. Beat them all hollow (wholly), is to defeat or surpass wholly. Beat the rap is to beat a prison sentence, not that you would have any use for that. Then you would have beauty is only skin deep and beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but we are moving away from the topic now. lauriebarber.com; lbword@midcoast.com.au.

FROM THE MAYOR A weekly conversation with Mayor Peta Pinson Last week Council came together for our August meeting. This is the formal part of what we do, and each month I, as Mayor and your other Councillors discuss and make decisions on important matters that impact our community. If you haven’t been to a Council meeting before, you are most welcome to attend to see what goes on. You can even register to speak at a Council meeting on an item you believe is important for Councillors to know about. However before you do this, I would recommend you contact our Customer Service team as quite often they are able to assist, or at least point you in the right direction. The August meeting was certainly action-packed, and we moved forward with some exciting initiatives on behalf of our community. One of these is the management of the flying fox

population within the Kooloonbung Creek Nature Reserve. It was great to see local residents attend the meeting, and I’m particularly pleased to see full support from Councillors to establish a consultative committee and start to develop a plan for how our community is going to manage this difficult situation. I really feel for the residents in the area, and rest assured we will be doing everything possible to work toward a solution that meets all our needs… flying foxes included. I’m also really excited to see two major initiatives get the green light and move towards construction. The first is the upgraded terminal building at the Port Macquarie Airport. This project will see the existing terminal building double in size and provide a much improved travel experience for locals and visitors. Construction is due to start in October and will be completed before the 2019 Christmas holidays. In other great news the villages of Comboyne, Long Flat and

pmhc.nsw.gov.au Telegraph Point will soon have reticulated sewer with Council awarding the tender to construct the systems at the meeting. The new systems will really improve the quality of life in the 3 villages, and the environmental benefits are significant. Construction will start in the coming months, with residents able to connect to the new systems progressively from November 2019. And a quick congratulations to Maddison Baxter and the Wauchope High School rugby girls who received funds from the Mayor’s Sporting Fund… go girls! As you can see it’s been a great month for our community, and I look forward to keeping you up to date with Council decisions from our future meetings. Until next week, Peta

VIEW that never stops giving By BARBARA DYER IT’S the third Monday of the month, and the VIEW Club ladies gather at Panthers, like any group of friends out to ‘do lunch’. But for these ladies, their lunch has a special and very meaningful purpose. Since 1960, VIEW Clubs have supported disadvantaged children through the Smith Family and that remains their goal today. In Port Macquarie there are three VIEW Clubs, Lighthouse Evening and Port Evening, and the Port Day VIEW Club which caters to those who are usually retired and can meet during the day. The women of VIEW come from all walks of life; some recall hard times while others may have grown up in comfortable surrounds. All share a desire to support today’s kids and while for some clubs this means fundraising outside the club, it can also mean just emptying their purses of loose coins. No amount is too small. No gift goes unnoticed. As well as the lunch, there are guest speakers and raffles of donated goods. “We fundraise amongst ourselves and are currently helping two children aged 10 and 16,” says Noeline Abi-Saab, president of the Port Day VIEW Club, although they are the only details she reveals of ‘their kids’. “Sometimes we may sponsor the same child through primary school to high school; we may even request to continue helping when they leave school,” says Noeline. “We don’t go into their circumstances or details of their life, but we do receive cards and letters from them, and that’s lovely. “We know their first names only and don’t always know what state they live unless they mention somewhere they have visited. “They write to us, let us know how they

Noeline Abi-Saab, president of the Port Day VIEW Club are going, perhaps to thank us for a donation or a birthday gift or Christmas present. But how often they contact us and what they want to tell us about themselves is entirely up to them. “We know the money is for a good cause, and we feel good about doing it. “Our donations might help change their lives, go towards paying for an excursion, and it gives us satisfaction supporting these students through

IT was the 1960s, and the second wave of feminism was beginning; women were questioning their blinkered roles as wives and mothers. George Forbes (then General Secretary of The Smith Family) saw an opportunity and a need to give women a voice – the ‘v’ in VIEW (voice, interests and education of women). In January 1960, an ad in the Manly Daily on Sydney’s northern beaches, invited housewives to leave their daily chores, develop fresh interests and meet new people by forming a VIEW Club. The first VIEW Club came into being in Balgowlah, following a meeting at the home of Mrs Gwen Crozier in Balgowlah Heights. By mid-September 1960, 21 clubs had been established across the Sydney suburbs. In May 1962, The Smith Family Board of Directors recognised the need for the club to have full control of its own affairs and VIEW became self-governing. By the 1970s, VIEW Clubs had spread from Tweed Heads, to Wollongong and west to Dubbo. Throughout the ‘70s, members offered The Smith Family administrative support in the head office, gathered clothing and blankets The Smith Family.” Noeline says that while most know the Smith Family supports children in need, not everyone would associate the VIEW Club with the Smith Family. The VIEW Club – VIEW stands for voice, interests and education of women, is a national volunteer organisation with more than 300 clubs across Australia, and open to women of all ages.

for the annual Winter Appeal and packed Christmas food hampers for the needy. VIEW raised $68,000 for The Smith Family in 1970 – by 1979 that figure had risen to $275,000. Meanwhile the importance of education in society was coming to the forefront of the VIEW philosophy and as clubs spread through the ‘80s, the ‘90s marked a decision by The Smith Family to alter its focus from an organisation offering a hand out to one that offered disadvantaged families a hand up. It sought the support of VIEW and in 1998 began to officially move from welfare, towards helping break the cycle of disadvantage through education. Instead of collecting and making clothing for distribution to the needy, members were informed of the difference that could be made by sponsoring disadvantaged children through The Smith Family’s Learning for Life education programs. In 2016-17, VIEW Club’s 16,000 strong membership sponsored more than 1100 disadvantaged students and raised more than $1 million for The Smith Family’s Learning for Life program. “It’s both a friendship network, as well as giving a sense of purpose for members through supporting the education of disadvantaged Australian children,” says Noeline. “We currently have about 48 members and new members are always welcome.” Members meet third Monday of the month at Port Macquarie Panthers.

Levi’s rodeo dream

KUNDABUNG’S (near Kempsey) rodeo star Levi Ward, 10, has just returned from his great American adventure. Levi’s had one dream for years – to compete in an American rodeo. His father, Dean Ward, explains how his son’s dream unfolded: “Levi came 11th in the Youth Bull Riders World Finals in Abilene, Texas. “He competed against 75 other kids in the under 11’s age group. “To compete in the finals you had to have three rides and make it to the top 15 of 75 for the finals. Levi went into the finals in 8th place and bucked off and ended up in 11th place. We are all really proud of him.” The world finals took place over four days in Abilene and included kids like Levi from all over the world. Levi spent some of his extra time seeing the sights with his mother. “Making it to the top 15 was the best part of the trip,” said Levi. “But I also loved exploring

America. I saw the Grand Canyon and visited Tombstone and Fort Worth. I still want to move to America one day to do rodeo full time.” While Levi was in America he also competed in other bull riding competitions. After an inspiring trip to America Levi is straight back into competing around Australia. “We are booked for rodeos every weekend until December 1st,” explains Mr Ward. “It’s starting to financially really hurt, but Levi and his sisters love it. We are really trying to get Levi’s 13-year-old sister Bobbi to do more rodeos because she’s leading for her age group in Australia. Our sponsors help a lot and we are always looking to get more on board. We have a big billboard on our truck for sponsors too.” For anyone interested in sponsoring the Ward family, call Dean Ward on 0407996969. The family’s current sponsors are Tumblegum Bakehouse, Mavin Truck Centre, RedPoint, NRMA Kempsey, Kempsey Stock and Land, Fishers Asphalt, Gulf Western Oils, and Hooked Rodeo Hardwear.

SWR a sporting chance of new facility

• From Page 1 There will also be office space available for development officers or allied health professionals. “This Sports Centre is a facility for all and provides improved facilities for our local sporting clubs to grow their memberships,” said KSC Councillor Anna Shields. “Spectators will also enjoy an improved level of visibility and comfort.” Councillor Shields is also a member of the SWR Sport & Recreation Association, an organisation that represents 11 local sporting clubs, the SWR Country Club and the SWR Public School. It was formed in 2015. Councillor Shields believes the proposed Sports’ Centre will also provide an opportunity

for the Macleay Valley’s talented young athletes to access pre-elite coaching without having to travel long distances or move away home. “So far Country Rugby League, the Canterbury Bankstown Bulldogs and AFL ACT/NSW have all expressed interest in using the facility for development squad training and camps,” she said. “Many regional squads train at Coffs Harbour for the northern players and Port Macquarie for the south so this centralised facility will offer the opportunity for combined trainings. “Our focus will be attracting events that bring the whole family, such as the Australian Schoolboys Rugby League Championships.” On behalf of all the Centre’s organisers and supporters, Councillor Shields wanted to thank

Peter Hadlow and Craig Bale for the time and effort they put into designing the SWR High Performance Sports Centre. “It’s a design that is based on a balance between stakeholder engagement and affordability,” she said. “We would also like to thank the SWR Country Club for their generous and enduring support. “These projects must be driven by the community and Council is there to support, facilitate and see it through to fruition.” The plans were presented at a community meeting at the SWR Country Club on Thursday August 16. MAD way to help homeless

Left: The Bago Maze and Winery will again be the popular venue for the M.A.D Jazz event on September 9

“ Homelessness is

growing around this region and I think the real alarming thing is that we are starting to see more youth become homeless

THE M.A.D Jazz event is on again at Bago Maze and Winery and this fun day has an exceptional cause. The Make a Difference not for profit charity organisation in Port Macquarie will be putting on another event to raise funds for disadvantaged people living in the community. “It was a really successful event last year so we are running it again,” said Erin Denham, Founder of Make a Difference Port Macquarie. “We raised $10,000 last year.” This year’s funds will go towards a new food van to complement other services that already exist, such as the Orange Sky Mobile Laundry Van, which was brought in 2017 and provides free clothes washing and drying for homeless and disadvantaged people. “The laundry van has to have a service provider with it to run its service, and there are certain areas we can’t get to with our laundry van because there’s not a service provider there, for example under Wauchope bridge,” said Erin. “So we are currently investigating the possibility of supporting this service and other similar services in the area with a mobile food van.” The plan is for the food van to stay localised to Port Macquarie, Laurieton, and Wauchope. “There is already a soup kitchen in the area, and while they are great, they are not mobile,” explains Erin. “Hundreds of people will use this food service because there’s more people that would access the food options than laundry and that’s partly because some people don’t want to bring their laundry, and for some people, all they’ve got is the clothes on their back. “The laundry van can also only do 5-6 washes a shift, so the food van is far more accessible and easy.” The food van will operate by relying on food donations from local bakeries, restaurants, and businesses. Erin says that with the growing number of people becoming homeless in this

9

region, there is a huge need for a food van. “Homelessness is growing around this region and I think the real alarming thing is that we are starting to see more youth become homeless,” Erin explains. “We see families break down and domestic violence increasing. The cost of living is also increasing, prices of housing and renting has gone through the roof in our area. “Last week I read where Port Macquarie is the third in the state for public bankruptcies. While it looks like Port Macquarie is doing really well economically, there is a big gap and I think it’s widening. “A lot of these people also don’t want to be known as homeless too, so they tend to stick to themselves. We’ve got a very public face of homelessness, like people living out at Koolabung Creek and so on. But there’s a lot more people also living out of cars or couch

surfing. It’s a real issue. Domestic violence is definitely one of the biggest precursors to it, and the increase cost of living.” To help bring the plans of the food van to life people are invited to join in the fun at the M.A.D Jazz event at the Bago Maze and Winery on Sunday September 9 from 10am-3pm. There will be four bands performing - Blu Hypothesis, Big Band Theory, MacKillop College Big Band, and the St Columba Jazz Band. There will be plenty of tasty food provided by Agostina’s which will be complemented by the well renowned Bago bubbly. This is a family friendly event so bring along all your friends and family for a day out in the beautiful leafy surrounds of the Bago Winery. Admission is ‘a note for a note’ – all donations are appreciated. For more information visit the Make a Difference Facebook page at https:// www.facebook.com/makeadifferencePMQ/

Ayers brings Ronstadt to Port PORT Macquarie is one of just three venues that Angela Ayers will be bringing her show ‘Simple Dreams’ the songs of Linda Ronstadt. Angela has had a lengthy and successful music career, but now she is producing and promoting for the first time ever. “I’m fulfilling another dream now,” said Angela. “I grew up on Linda Ronstadt music and at one of my first talent quests I sang one of her songs. “Then seven years ago I was looking for another project and David Mitchell, one of the prolific theatre writers here in Australia, suggested Linda Ronstadt and I sat on it for two years and then I rewrote it and scaled it down. I decided it was time for the first time in my life to become a self promoter and producer.” Angela is regarded as one of Australia and New Zealand’s finest talents and just like Linda she has performed in many different musical genres from theatre to cabaret. “I used to be a regular performer on cruise ships, and I also worked in the Sinai with Ricky May just before he and I did ‘Guys and Dolls’ together,” Angela explains. “We went on a Peace Corp trip to entertain the troops in the Sinai back in the 80s, which was pretty amazing. “There was only 12 of us on an Air New Zealand Air Force plane and about 5 entertainers and a four-piece band. My mother was very worried about me working there. So the only dream I haven’t fulfilled in my career is to star or be in a musical on West End, London. So I’ve been pretty lucky.” The audience can expect to hear Linda’s famous songs linking to humorous stories, such as ‘Silver Threads and Golden Needles’, ‘Different Drum’, ‘Blue Bayou’, ‘It Doesn’t Matter Anymore’, ‘Desperado’, ‘Just One Look’, ‘Poor Poor Pitiful Me’ and many more. “We are doing three venues – Port Macquarie, Wollongong and Cessnock,” said Angela. “So I’m taking a risk, because a lot of venues aren’t buying in shows anymore. It’s a learning curve because I’ve always been the artist on the other side. I think the market that we are aiming at is what Port stands for. If it’s really successful we will go all around Australia because I think the country areas would go really well.” Angela says it’s not just the older crowd that will enjoy her show. “My daughter is a singer and I always use her band ‘Heart Beats Mind’ as my opening act and I’m noticing more and more that they are getting more into the 70s and 80s music,” explains Angela. “She’s 28 and all her friends know who ‘The Beatles’, ‘The Rolling Stones’, and the ‘Eagles’ are. They are going back to the music that we grew up listening to.”

Multi-talented Angela Ayers will be bringing the songs of Linda Ronstadt to Port Macquarie In 2017 Angela was one of the opening acts at the Tamworth Country and Music Festival at the Capitol Theatre with her show ‘Simple Dreams’. “I had a great time performing in Tamworth last year and I’m looking forward to having more to do with Port Macquarie,” Angela said. “Linda was a stunner and a great singer and classed still today as one of the greatest rock chick singers in the world. She’s crossed over from everything from folk to rock, pop, and musical theatre. That was one of the things I said to David Mitchell – I don’t sound like anybody or look like anybody, but I love every style of music. There are also a lot of tribute shows going around, but they are mostly males.” Angela has enjoyed an amazing career from the ‘70s star on television in her home country of New Zealand to starring in the original Australian production of ‘A Chorus Line’ to ‘Guys and Dolls’ with Anthony Warlow and Ricky May. Angela has had starring roles in

CLASSIFICATION:

‘West Side Story’, ‘The Rocky Horror Show’, ‘Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat’, ‘Cabaret Chicago’, ‘Jerry’s Girls’, ‘42nd St’, ‘Mum’s the Word’ and has toured Australia and NZ in ‘Menopause the Musical’. Angela will be joined with her backing band ‘The Stoned Brumbies’, some of Sydney’s finest musicians. “Linda has played an enormous part in my journey as an artist and it is an honor to bring these songs to the stage,” said Angela. See Angela’s performance ‘Simple Dreams’ the songs of Linda Ronstadt at the Glasshouse on October 21 at 3pm. Tickets are $54 for adults, and $52 for members and concessions. To book visit http:// www.glasshouse.org.au or phone 02 6581 8888. For more information about Angela Ayres visit www.angelaayers.com

Your Local Independent - The Hastings and The Macleay

footytips

Still no clear NRL favourite AS last weekend showed, nobody is sacred in this NRL competition. All year Your Local Independent has been prattling on about how this has been one of the toughest tipping seasons on record … and that continues. Not even the top sides are safe this close to the finals. The result has been a fascinating competition. Even now there is no clear favourite for the ultimate prize. In fact any of the top eight sides could win right through. Let’s get out that pin and try to find some winners: Wests Tigers v Sea Eagles (Thursday, August 23, 7.50pm, Campbelltown Stadium, Sydney): Two teams who will be looking toward to next year with plenty of regret surrounding 2018. The Tigers were good early, faded, made a late charge, then faded again. Their loss to the Dragons last weekend basically snuffed out any slim hope of a miraculous dive into the eight. Manly’s off-field dramas have dogged them all season. Great roster, but their minds are elsewhere. • Your Local Independent tips: Wests Tigers Warriors v Panthers (Friday, August 24, 6pm, Mt Smart Stadium, Auckland): Two teams that promised so much early, but have now hit quicksand. Both coming off losses last weekend – Panthers down to Knights and Warriors pipped by Dogs. Both those losses were very painful. Neither are looking like grand final material, but with the topsy turvy nature of this year’s comp … who knows. Warriors are at home, so that may give them the

edge. • Your Local Independent tips: Warriors Cowboys v Eels (Friday, August 24, 7.55pm, 1300SMILES Stadium, Townsville): Toss a coin. Again, two teams who should be vying for top four and are instead desperately trying to avoid the spoon. Both lost last weekend and both just want this season to be done and dusted. Such a shame that JT did not have the farewell year that he deserved. The fact that this will be his final home game will be enough to get the Cows home. • Your Local Independent tips: Cowboys Raiders v Rabbitohs (Saturday, August 25, 3pm, GIO Stadium, Canberra): The Raiders put on a vintage show last weekend, while the Rabbits gave their supporters some concerns by falling badly to the Broncos. This game is in cold Canberra, but the Rabbitohs have some big names due back from injury – none bigger than Greg Inglis. Souths must win and win well to have their heads in the right place with the finals almost here. • Your Local Independent tips: Rabbitohs Titans v Storm (Saturday, August 25, 5.30pm, Cbus Super Stadium, Gold Coast): Storm have a few injury/suspension concerns, but last weekend had a solid win over the Eels, which edged them again to the top of the points ladder on percentages. Meanwhile, the Titans gave their fans a boost with a try-spree over the Sea Eagles. As the last couple of rounds have shown, no top eight side is safe from an upset. The Storm should

Sharon Griffiths

cruise through here, but the Titans are at home and could cause a boilover … but unlikely. • Your Local Independent tips: Storm Roosters v Broncos (Saturday, August 25, 7.35pm, Allianz Stadium, Sydney): Wow, a lot of interest here. The Roosters have been everybody’s tip to be in this year’s grand final. Even their loss last weekend will not have dissuaded too many people. However the perception of the Broncos has changed. They have gone from ‘good top eight’ material to the ‘Dark Horse’ after toppling the Rabbits last weekend. Brisbane have an array of young powerful forwards, who are giving them a genuine ‘top four’ look. This game may sort out a few questions. • Your Local Independent tips: Roosters Sharks v Knights (Sunday, August 26, 2pm, Southern Cross Group Stadium, Cronulla): The Sharks have quietly gone about their business in recent weeks and are just a win out of the top four. They are another team who could run into premiership calculations over the next couple of weeks. They had a good win over the Cows last weekend. The Knights have had a solid building year and showed last weekend, with a win over Penrith, just how dangerous they still are. • Your Local Independent tips: Sharks Dragons v Bulldogs (Sunday, August 26, 4.10pm, Jubilee Oval, Sydney): Coach ‘Mary’ McGregor says the Dragons are back on track. Well this game will test that theory.

The Dogs are at the wrong end of the ladder, but are still dangerous – they upset the Warriors last weekend – so can cause similar damage this weekend. The Dragons simply need to win to convince fans, and themselves, that they still have got what it takes to win the big prize this year. • Your Local Independent tips: Dragons
