Stop the violence By NIKALA SIM and SUE PATERICK
KNOWLEDGE is power especially when it comes to relationships. This message, from Ahlia Westaway-Griffiths, relates to being able to identify the early warning signs of a relationship on its way to becoming one of domestic violence. “Domestic violence has many and varied forms,” Ms Westaway-Griffiths said. “Abuse can be financial, verbal, emotional, psychological, cultural, sexual, isolating and of course, physical. “It doesn’t have to be the worst scenario you can imagine and in most cases domestic violence includes a whole range of abuses.” “Domestic violence relationships very rarely start off that way – the behaviours are often so subtle, and creep in over a period of time, so people don’t immediately realise the experience they are having.” Ms Westaway-Griffiths is the Program and Community Education Specialist for the Port Macquarie Hastings Domestic and Family Violence Specialist Service. This Hastings-based and the Kempsey-based services will host events, for their communities, over the coming week. The White Ribbon Walk is an opportunity to show support for women who have experienced domestic violence, and the whole community’s desire to see an end to this destructive behaviour. Service Coordinator of Kempsey Family Support Service June Wilson said over 60 Australian women had died this year as a result

Purple and white banners proudly fly at Kempsey’s Smith Street to give a clear message that our community says ‘no’ to domestic violence of domestic violence. As horrific as this statistic is, it does not really portray the number of women and children living with domestic violence on a daily basis, Ms Wilson said. Teaching our sons to have respectful relationships was a powerful way for individuals

to make a difference, Port Macquarie’s Ms Westaway-Griffiths said. “Fathers and other men with children in their lives need to role model respect for women,” the 26-year-old said. “The most basic relationship a child has is with their parents. • Continued Page 5

Gardens rekindle calm “ Here I can

“
By NIKALA SIM DEMENTIA does not discriminate. Sarah was a health professional. She had been chief executive officer of a local hospital, a district manager, responsible for quality and accreditation, legislative requirements and community programs, held bachelor and master arts degrees and had considered applying for a doctorate. “I had quite an onerous job,” the 61-yearold said. On top of work, Sarah cared for her ailing mother who before she died asked her to see someone about her memory. “I think she knew - at 97 she had a better memory than me.” In 2013 Sarah had brain surgery for the ninth time due to her condition of hydrocephalus, commonly known as water on the brain. It was after this that she could no longer read and lost her career overnight. Sarah was referred to Alzheimers Australia for assistance and at the end of an hour it was revealed she had the symptoms of early onset dementia. “The air sucked out of the room,” Sarah said. Sector and Capacity Development Program Officer at Alzheimer’s Australia in Port Macquarie Gary Thomas said the diagnosis was not formal but there was enough evidence to support it. “Dementia is an umbrella term for over 100 conditions with Alzheimer’s being the most common,” Mr Thomas said. The disease is progressive in that it worsens over time and ends only in death. Everyone experiences dementia differently, Mr Thomas said, but there are common symptoms. Sarah’s inability to read was one of these. “I was a prolific reader of four and five books a week,” she said. “But suddenly it became like reading another language.” It is now five years since the Port Macquarie
Sarah holds Claude as he eats a flower from the garden that will be tailored for people with dementia • ALZHEIMER’S Australia NSW will hold an education workshop in Port Macquarie for volunteers who support people in dementia care, aged care or general community service. The three-hour interactive workshop is designed to assist volunteers in their caring roles and will provide fundamental information about dementia and its impact. It will also include strategies for communication and engagement. Topics covered will include: woman has read a new book, instead she rereads those she knows well. Short term memory loss is another common symptom of dementia, Mr Thomas said. “You have no idea how much I lose each day,” Sarah explained. “Even as I am speaking to you the words are falling away from my memory. “I only know in broad terms that I am speaking to you about dementia but I can’t tell you what we’ve said.” This also has an effect on Sarah’s ability to watch television, speak on the telephone and be among a crowd of people.
understanding major causes and symptoms of dementia; how brain damage effects function and behaviour, and effective engagement when visiting a person with dementia. The workshop will be held on Tuesday, November 29, from 9.30am-12.30pm at Alzheimer’s Australia NSW’s Dementia and Memory Community Centre, 121 Bridge Street, Port Macquarie. Morning tea will be provided. To register, or for more information, please call (02) 6584 7444. “I retain insight into my condition which is sort of a mixed blessing - I understand exactly what is wrong and what I’ve lost.” This makes her angry and frustrated to the point of tears and screams, this strong woman said. The place Sarah is now happiest is at home and in her garden. It is a safe place where she can forget about the stigma of her condition, lost friendships and hopes. Her gardener’s hands attest to the time she spends amongst the colour, smell and variety of her garden, she said.
“Here I can lose myself for a time and forget what dogs my life.” Dementia gardens bring a sense of calm, Sarah said. They evoke memories through sight, touch and smell. It is this gift of a sensory garden to evoke memory that our community can give to those living with dementia. Designs have been drawn and the ball is rolling to build a dementia sensory garden at Alzheimer’s Australia Dementia and Community Centre at 121 Bridge Street in Port Macquarie. The Port Macquarie Hastings Local ClubGRANTS Committee recently gave a grant of $20,000 and an anonymous donor provided another $20,000 but more funds are needed. The Singing for Dementia concert, featuring performances by Quintessence Choir, David Smith and Carol Baker, Wendy and Mike Jamieson, Katherine and Kim Bright and Wednesday a capella choir, is a great way to support this worthy cause. Join in the fun at the centre on Wednesday, December 7 from 7pm to 8.45pm. Tickets cost $25 and bookings on 6584 7444 are essential.

Tidal pool a blessing for disabled SO, Port Macquarie-Hastings Council is asking for feedback for their Disability Inclusion Action Plan for 2017-2021 by way of a survey. In my humble opinion, the best and most generous inclusive action would be to build an ocean tidal pool in Port Macquarie because a lot of people with a disability, and the elderly, are crying out for this facility in our town. In most cases it is their only chance to connect with the sea which is proven to aid in recovery and rehabilitation for both physical and mental health, the minerals in sea water cannot be underestimated in the healing process.
I am inundated with pleas to not give up on this campaign and sadly a lot of people acknowledge they will not see it in their lifetime. With proper access and rails it would be a wonderful opportunity for disabled people to immerse in the sea where they simply cannot cope with the surf beaches because people are either too frail, or their disability limits their movement and ability. This is a major demographic that would benefit from an ocean tidal pool along with children and everyone else in between, a safe swimming area free of sharks and stingers. I was disgusted when told by my
friend who works with clients with acquired brain injuries, who are often wheelchair bound, that the public pool in Port Macquarie does not have the facilities and proper access to accommodate this group of people so she has to drive them to Kendell. Port Macquarie-Hastings Council have not even voted on our submission yet with the pretence of waiting to see what happens in Ballina with their similar but different campaign. I am also waiting for Mayor Peter Besseling’s reply as to what the ‘insurmountable environmental impediments’ are and to see if we can overcome or ‘surmount’ them.
I think they are hoping we just go away quietly but we have worked too hard to do that and the community seem to be behind us all the way with constant encouragement and our petition submission of over 15400 signatures - that should not be ignored or overlooked - so I am hoping they revisit that submission if they are serious about helping and providing assistance for people with disabilities and the rest of the community in Port Macquarie and surrounding areas, and the thousands of tourists who visit our beautiful town annually. Thumbs Up TO the Port Macquarie Hastings Council for their update/ facelift of the outdated/often vandalized old garden beds. This garden welcomes visitors to our town. Now we have Australian Grass Trees, ground cover and even concrete art sculpture. These art works obviously represent the shapes of graves: The heaviness and solidarity, of the historic nature of Port, a non-racial representation the council perhaps hoped to express with these shapes!? Well done. Yes, it was an unfortunate episode on Remembrance Day. Perhaps more of our town could have been in attendance to remember world peace! Thumbs Down TO the Port Macquarie Hastings Council for canvassing for additional rates for roads. Where are the other options like drawing on reserves? Making developers pay levies and running a more efficient council? Every ratepayer witnesses’ wastage and inefficiencies. We can soon tell them where money can be saved.
TO the many firefighters who worked as one on our property Sunday, November 6, and saved our homes we are so very grateful.
Thumbs Down TO all the noisy motor bikes around town. Some have no mufflers. How can this be legal? Any car with a noisy exhaust cannot be registered. Is there an exception for bikes?
Thumbs Up TO Peter and his team at Little Green Truck. The boys that delivered our new furniture were courteous, helpful and on time, even on Saturday in that awful humidity. I can only imagine how difficult it would have been to have to carry heavy furniture around, they were cheerful. It really is a pleasant surprise to get such good service. Well done.

Thumbs Down TO whoever was responsible for starting the fire at Ravenswood Road on Saturday, November 5 on a total fire ban day.
TO Deb Howard and her husband who came back and assisted an elderly lady who tripped and fell on the footpath in Lord Street and to the ambulance driver’s caring and compassionate assistance. The lady was okay and assisted home.

IT’S White Ribbon week and an opportunity for the community to pull together and support the various events to raise awareness and funds to put an end to domestic and family violence. Unfortunately, I’m sure we all know someone that has suffered from an abusive and violent relationship. I’ve been there, done that. My parents were a fine example of how to abuse each other. That’s right, each other. There was plenty of drunken verbal abuse, emotional abuse and physical abuse. Interestingly, I watched my mother beat my dad up with a vacuum cleaner and throw spoonful’s of boiling hot savoury mince at him. My dad would yell a lot but, I can never remember him lashing out physically in retaliation. He would just bugger off for a couple of days/ weeks/months and come back when the dust had settled. This went on for 19 long years! My mother and father were both well-loved and loving people. Most people who knew them would be mortified to think their relationship was anything like the living hell I witnessed. I’m not trying to dilute the message of White Ribbon Week. I just think that we need to acknowledge – there are a hell of a lot of men who are victims of domestic and family violence – not just women and children. Can we just stop being abusive and violent.

Music is Rory’s life By SUE PATERICK
FOR Elvis Presley’s guitar player, Scotty Moore, success was making a living at what you loved doing. If that’s so then musician and songwriter Rory Ellis is one of the luckiest men alive. Love bought Rory to the Macleay Valley in 2015, but his deep and gravelly voice, poetic lyrics and magic guitar playing have enthralled audiences throughout Australia, the United Kingdom and Europe. Rory describes his brand of music as Americana, which he says is a combination of folk, blues and country with a bit of grunt thrown in. Rory was unaware he had a gift for music until he bought a book on how to play the guitar and taught himself at the age of 14. He grew up in Victoria with parents who both loved music. His Dad favoured the likes of Hank Snow, Hank Williams and Johnny Cash, while his Mum loved show tunes. As the years went by Rory’s musical tastes turned to Skyhooks, ACDC, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Bob Dylan. “When I think back there were so many influences,” Rory said. The deep meaning in Dylan’s lyrics had a profound effect on Rory, who also writes songs with many layers. “I don’t have a formal process about writing songs,” he said. “Things happen that I don’t realise at the time but later on I’ll get inspired. “It’s like opening up a channel and letting the water flow. “And when I start an album it comes really fast.” His first gig was in a duo playing at a pub in Flemington where they performed for months. For the last decade he has toured overseas
After touring NSW, Tasmania and Victoria supporting Renee Geyer and Diesel, musician and songwriter Rory Ellis will perform at two venues in the Macleay Valley in December including UK, Germany, Denmark and the Shetland Islands. One of his favourite places is Germany because of its incredible architecture and history, and its thriving music scene. “People come out because they want to hear musicians and live bands,” Rory said. “Germans have a real interest in roots music.” For Rory having a connection with the audience and telling them stories that make them smile and think is one of the greatest things about being a musician. To get his music to the world Rory has developed an App, which will be free for the first month. His advice to anyone starting their musical
career is to be very good at what they do. “Be great at your craft and have a good sense of where you want to go and what you want to be,” he explained. “You need to be true to you and find the essence of who you are and then expand it. “In 50 years they won’t remember who sang a great cover version of Bob Dylan, they’ll remember you and your songs.” After a whirlwind tour of NSW, Tasmania and Victoria supporting Renee Geyer and Diesel, Rory will be performing at the Bellbrook Hotel on Friday December 9 from 7.30pm. He will also perform at the Gladstone Heritage Hotel on Sunday December 11 between 3pm and 6pm. Entry is free.
Stop the violence
• From Page 1 “It is important fathers and courts recognise that violence against a child’s mother is child abuse - there are no hairs to split.” Young people at Kempsey High School have vowed to take the White Ribbon Pledge - a cause they have participated in for the last five years. Their pledge is to stand up, speak out, and act to prevent men’s violence against women. And to swear to never commit, condone or remain silent about domestic violence. The broader Macleay Valley community will join the global campaign of 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence. This begins on Friday, November 25 with White Ribbon Day and runs until Saturday December 10. Purple and white banners already fly in Kempsey’s Smith Street and will remain in place for the 16 Days of the campaign. Kempsey’s Ms Wilson said she hopes the banners will keep the conversation going about the disparity between genders and help spread understanding of domestic violence throughout the community. Currently one in three women live with domestic violence. Let’s hear your voice By NIKALA SIM THE real message during community consultation on rates is you need to have your say if you want to influence the decision, Residents Action Network President Hilton King says. The solicitor, who has worked with many councils, is impressed with the fact that council had gone out of its way to consult with the community. “The staff really know what they are talking about,” Mr King said. “As a solicitor dealing with many councils I have never known any to perform as well as this one.” The 65-year-old became President of the Residents Action Network (RAN) in June when Shooters Party founder John Tingle retired from the role. “I got involved with RAN two years ago because a client had a concern about foreshore developments,” Mr King said. “I enjoy getting involved and being part of the community – you meet great people.” RAN is currently reactive rather than proactive, he said, in that it is being approached by the community to assist with specific issues. But proactive is exactly what Mr King is urging residents to be. “For most people the decision to make the current special rate variation permanent will cost 55 cents per week and will have little impact. “If council have a better financial position they can provide better roads.” The bottom line is some of our roads are really dangerous, he said. “Irrespective of the way the decision goes I would like to think council will pull its socks up and take better management of its finances.” Councillor Sharon Griffiths was a lone soldier in opposing the Port MacquarieHastings Council proposal to lodge an expression of interest to make permanent a 4.43% rate increase, at its most recent general meeting. “This is a little bit unreasonable,” Cr Griffiths said. “The 2012/13 operational plan stated Council would address the backlog through efficiencies.” The backlog in 2012 was $110 million and this year was reported as $108.5 million, Cr Griffiths said. “This means that in real terms in four years we have not addressed the backlog.” Council should look to itself first for savings and efficiencies before asking for the community to foot the bill for indefinite rate rises, she said. “The community expect the organisation to be financially transparent and operate to the highest level of efficiency so we need to review, implement and publicly report cost saving measures in order to fund a significant share
Regional jobs package a boost for NSW STATE MATTERS
With Leslie Williams State Member for Port Macquarie
Residents Action Network President Hilton King urges residents to complete the Port Macquarie-Hastings Council’ rates survey before community consultation closes this Sunday
Your rates explained
Have your say
THE Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal of NSW (IPART) is responsible for setting the amount by which councils can increase their general income. Each year, it determines a standard increase known as the rate peg. Councils can also apply to increase their general income by more than the rate peg - this is called a special rate variation. In 2012 Port Macquarie-Hastings council was given permission by IPART to permanently charge residents 7.1 per cent of their land value as assessed by the Valuer General of NSW. Council now wants to permanently add 4.43 per cent to this. This will mean residents pay a rate of 11.53 per cent of their property value before any other charges are applied, including the rate peg. Other charges for the coming financial year include waste water, waste management and the Emergency Services Property Levy.
YOU have until this Sunday to help council make the best decision about future rate levels. To do so you must fill out a survey to say what you think is important and how any decision may impact you. The survey will gather data on where you live, whether you own or rent a home, if you are in business or farming, and how you receive an income. Three questions refer to footpaths, sealed and unsealed roads - you are asked to comment on the impact to you of reduced maintenance or maintenance retained at current levels. You are also asked to outline your hopes and concerns regarding the proposed rate options. The last two questions ask if you think it is reasonable, and affordable, to continue paying the current level of rates. The survey can be filled out online at www.pmhclistening.com.au/rates or phone Council on 6581 8111. The final decision on whether to apply to make the 4.43 per cent rate permanent will be made by councillors.
of the infrastructure backlog from the existing resources”. This year’s financial statement indicates that Council has generated sufficient surpluses, before capital grants and contributions, to fund its depreciation on a consolidated basis. This is good news, Cr Griffiths said, even more so if work to the value of the depreciation is completed. “The service review is yet to be completed
and could result in further savings and begin to seriously address the backlog although things are progressing slowly,” Cr Griffiths said. Her proposal was to extend the 4.43 per cent rate for another five years. This would continue the current level of road work and give council the opportunity to make the savings needed for the special rate variation to lapse.
THE NSW Government has launched the Regional Jobs Now package to fuel job creation across regional NSW by assisting local businesses. Regional Jobs Now, an initiative of Jobs for NSW, offers products which will provide muchneeded financial support to help companies accelerate their growth and create jobs. The Regional Jobs Now initiative provides businesses in the Port Macquarie electorate with options for funding at different stages of expansion. Businesses are invited to apply for the funding through Jobs for NSW who will then help them apply for the most suitable Regional Jobs Now product. Applications will be assessed against all products so if a business is not eligible for one product it might be eligible for another. • Regional NSW plays a critical role in our economy and that’s why the Government is investing a minimum of 30 per cent - at least $57 million - of the $190 million Jobs for NSW Fund to support entrepreneurs who can create regional jobs growth. • The Regional Jobs Now package provides five different financial products intended to meet the needs of businesses at different critical stages of their development. • Regional businesses are encouraged to tell us what they need and we help them apply for the most suitable Regional Jobs Now product. • This ‘concierge’ style approach is a key part of how this integrated package is being rolled out. • Expressions of interest (EOI) for the Regional Solutions financial support product have opened and close on December 9, 2016. Further information is available at: https://www. jobsfornsw.com.au As Members of Parliament representing regional communities, we know that country NSW is a fantastic place to live, work and play. The NSW Government is making sure that regional NSW has access to the best roads, schools and hospitals through investing $13 billion in our first term and now investing $6 billion in our second term under Rebuilding NSW. Regional Jobs Now will help align our efforts to significantly grow regional centres to become accelerators for jobs growth and investment in the future.

Special women’s gift
Right: The historic Byabarra Hall will celebrate it’s 90th birthday on December 3
Byabarra Hall is turning 90 “
By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC
Today the hall hosts many private events, birthday parties, weddings and meetings, and it will be around for many more of its own birthdays
“
OVER the years it’s seen children’s birthday parties, the happiest of wedding days, gettogethers with the town’s local characters, a variety of concert and committee meetings and now it’s time for its own very special celebration - the Byabarra Hall’s 90th Birthday. “It was originally used by the school when the school was open,” said Bryan Jones, a member of the Byabarra Hall Committee. “The hall committee now holds events three or four times a year. Sometimes there will be a band playing at the hall, but one of the more popular events is the ‘Square Dance Night’ that we have. Everyone seems to really like that event.” According to Byabarra resident Jenny Hawkins, the town, and its hall, were once a lot busier than now. “The area used to be a dairying as well as a potato and pea and corn growing district,” she said. “Very little of that occurs today, with beef cattle being the main activity. The town did have two churches and a post office and now only has one church.” Although some businesses may have
disappeared from Byabarra over the years, the hall has always remained the centre of the town’s activities and has even undergone several ‘facelifts’. “It was originally just a hall,” said Mr Jones. “Just one single room, and then in the 50s and 60s they added an extension on the side, making it twice the size, and even added a kitchen at the back of it. So there was plenty more room for the parties.” Ms Hawkins says that today the hall hosts many private events, birthday parties, weddings and meetings, and it will be around for many more of its own birthdays. “These days the hall is used for many things including exercise groups as there is a nice range of equipment, the craft group which is called ‘It’s a Stitch-Up’, the annual Beer Appreciation Night and the annual square dance,” she said.

The hall contains a small library and a very well equipped kitchen, a stage and a piano. Of course if there is a council meeting, it is held here.” The Byabarra Hall, located just 20 minutes from Wauchope, will be hosting its own party on Saturday, December 3, to celebrate its 90th birthday. SANTA has been skipping someone in recent years, but not this year. ‘Share the Dignity’ has a campaign called ‘It’s in the Bag’ which is making sure women in need aren’t going to miss out on receiving a gift this Christmas. The Christmas campaign idea came to the organisers’ minds when they realised that people seemed to manage the needs of children at Christmas, ensuring that they’re cared for and made to feel special, however, it wasn’t the same case for many women. The campaign urges people to donate a handbag and fill it with items that would make a woman feel special. This includes sanitary items, baby wipes, perfumes, soaps, movie vouchers, and much more. The donations will be taken to charities and shelters where women who are going through hardship will receive them. Simply take your bag to your nearest collection point for ‘Share the Dignity’ from November 19 to December 3 2016. Port Macquarie’s collection point is located at 158 Gordon Street. For further details or to locate a collection point visit www.sharethedignity.com.au

OUR
8
JAYSON CORR Brought to you by The Cruise Terminal
How long have you lived in or around Port Macquarie? 2002, I was 8 years old and moved up from the Eastern suburbs of Sydney? What do you love most about the Hastings? Beach and the sport. There’s a lot of sporting events in our area that is exciting to be either involved in or just a spectator. Where do you work and what do you love about your work? I work at the Port Macquarie Youth Hub. I love that I get an opportunity to work with a lot of youth and am able to give some insight about previous experiences e.g. school, sport, life in general, it is a rewarding job. What do you like least about your job? It can be a bit stressful with certain situations, although the love of the job keeps you going, but it is a hard to say that there is a dislike about the job when I enjoy it. How do you start your day? I wake up at 6.30 and head to the gym at Port Macquarie personal training, get home and have breakfast then head down to Town Beach for a jog then a swim, head home then I’m ready to head off to work. What do you do in your spare time? I coach junior rugby league. I am very fortunate to coach Group 3 junior rep rugby league, Port City Breakers and also the Birpai Dolphins. I also enjoy fishing and cycling. What is the achievement you are most proud of? Watching my players in the Birpai Dolphins win the grand final. I was very lucky to be the coach and enjoy the experience with them. I don’t think I have witnessed 15 and 16-year-olds put so much commitment and dedication towards something the way that they did to this competition. The boys were down 10-0 in the grand final and ended up winning 20-14. They turned up to training, the games and the camp we had and focused the best they could and the reward was a grand final win.
major priority AGED care is something that matters to all of us, whether it’s because we’re looking after or worried about older members of our families, or the fact that each of us will be an older member of the community one day. The Federal Government has an ambitious health reform agenda which is designed to put the needs of individuals at the centre of care. And aged Care is a very important part of this reform process. Ageing has never been a more active, empowered experience – with older people making wonderful contributions to our communities for many years after retirement, being independent, self-sufficient and involved. And ‘aged care’ is more than just caring for people when they become frail, or if they get ill, and need support and convalescence, or if they need support around the home. It’s about being there when people need support. Therefore, it’s important that the type of care required by our aging population responds to our changing perception of ageing. We need a quality system in place that is flexible enough to accommodate people’s different needs as they arise. We know we have a growing number of older people – which affects the amount the Government needs to spend on aged care. We know life expectancy of our older people is

increasing. It’s very clear that over the next 40 years as the population grows and ages we will have fewer people of traditional working age compared with the very young and the elderly. It is imperative that we create a sustainable aged care system that can provide care to those numbers of older people into the future, and a system that both taxpayers and consumers can afford. The Government has created 10,000 residential aged care places and 475 Short Term Restorative Care places that are available for allocation through the 2016-17 Aged Care Approvals Round (ACAR). Up to $64 Million in capital grants under the Rural, Regional and Other Special Needs Building Fund will be offered as part of this ACAR. The Government will provide an estimated funding of $17.5 billion in 2016-17 to support aged care consumers and the sector. This funding is growing, not reducing, and expected to reach over $21 billion by 2019-20.
JOURNALIST Frank Devine says the toughest thing he ever said on the cricket field to an opponent was: “Mate, I think your arse is on fire”. But Devine denied that his comment, directed at a batsman, was sledging, seeing that his opponent’s rear end really was on fire after a fast ball had ignited a box of matches in the player’s pocket. Australians are recognised worldwide as leaders in many sports and similar endeavours. They are also regarded as the world’s leading sledgers. Unfairly, some would say. The 20-volume Oxford English Dictionary says of sledging ‘Australian cricket slang’. Sledging could be regarded as similar to gamesmanship. Over the years players from all over have engaged in what has generally been good-natured banter, but sometimes in the heat of the moment that good nature has been found wanting. The Australian cricket team after the controversial 1973-74 tour of New Zealand gained the title of the ‘Ugly Australians’ because of various clashes, reported prominently in the press. The Australian National Dictionary says sledging is an attempt by a fielder to break the concentration of a person batting by needling, or abuse.
LAURIE BARBER
Ian Chappell said the term sledging came into use around 1963-64. Writing in the Sydney Morning Herald on November 4, 1982, he said a cricketer who swore in the presence of a female was said to have been ‘as subtle as a sledgehammer’. At the time, a song in the top of the hit parades was a Percy Sledge number When a Man Loves a Woman. The use of the name Sledge made its way onto the cricket field, where it stayed. The Sun-Herald in 1975 editorialised ‘sledging, or the gentle art of talking a player out, has no place in women’s cricket’. My big dictionary says the term ‘comes from subtle as a sledgehammer’. It goes on to quote the Age in 1979 as saying ‘a year or so earlier the Australian team coined sledging for needling or gamesmanship’. John Ayto says ‘unsettling a batsman with taunts’ and goes on to say ‘may have been
derived from sledgehammer’. Rudolph Brasch says the term represented knocking down all opposition. Sledging seems to have moved on from cricket. When Paul Keating called John Howard ‘his oiliness’ in 1975, Wilson Tuckey took the opportunity to respond in what the Sun-Herald of December 21 called ‘sledging’. Footballers, golfers and tennis players, and apparently women’s netballers, have also been accused in recent years of having sledged. In refereeing basketball at the national level I did not come across much sledging, simply because the rules provide that a technical foul can be called against a player who disrespectfully communicates with an opponent or uses language likely to offend the spectators. Under the ‘five fouls and you’re out’ regime, this tends to ensure players think twice before they say too much. One famous cricket comment, allegedly made by Dr WG Grace when he replaced the bails after having been bowled, was: ‘“These people haven’t come to watch you bowl; they came to watch me bat”. As for Ian Chappell’s thoughts on the origin of the word, Frank Devine quoted Ian Lawry as responding: “It’s too deep for me”.

What a pin-up fundraiser PORT Macquarie’s Dale MacMillan has used a fun competition to raise funds for the Layne Beachley Aim for the Stars Foundation. The professional accountant is well known by the moniker Miss Dale Velvet-Rose. Her fundraising efforts saw her honoured with a trophy cup inscribed ‘Pin-Up Mum’ at Panthers Port Rockin’ Retrofest 2016. This was to honour the time and effort Dale makes to encourage girls to become pin-ups and respect themselves no matter what size and age they may be. Dale has also organised hair and make-up workshops around NSW, and in
Port Macquarie during the year, and organised pin-up competitions and fashion shows across the Mid North Coast NSW. She is pictured above at the Pin-up Doll Australia 2016 competition, held in conjunction with Chromefest, on the Central Coast. Miss Velvet-Rose was awarded Best Wardrobe for her pictured dress and coat which she designed herself. The business woman was also voted Miss Congeniality by fellow competitors for being the most supportive, mentoring pin-up. (Photo: NOEL MACMILLAN)

Seawall gets official ‘tick’ A 400-METRE-LONG seawall to protect Illaroo Road and adjoining residential properties from major storm events can proceed following the endorsement of the Lake Cathie Coastal Zone Management Plan. Planning Minister Rob Stokes has announced the certification of the Port Macquarie-Hasting Council’s Lake Cathie Coastal Zone Management Plan (CZMP) to minimise the impact of weather events and protect local properties and infrastructure. Mr Stokes said the Council’s Lake Cathie CZMP, including the proposed seawall, provides a practical and pragmatic approach to managing current and future risks from coastal erosion impacts, as well as providing ongoing and improved management of the area. “This is an important step for the people of Lake Cathie and I congratulate Port MacquarieHastings Council for completing a plan for the management of this valuable and special part of the NSW coast,” Mr Stokes said. Mr Stokes thanked the Member for Port Macquarie Leslie Williams for her strong support of the plan. Mrs Williams said the CZMP would protect foreshore areas during major weather events while ensuring improved community access to and enjoyment of the coastline and Lake. It would also permit for appropriate development in a sensitive coastal zone. “This is very much in line with what the community wants,” Mrs Williams said. “Following a detailed analysis of options, including the costs and benefits, the CZMP

endorses the major strategy of installing a 400 metre long seawall,” she said. Mr Stokes said the seawall would require opportunistic sand nourishment of the beach to maintain the amenity of the area and aims to mitigate potential seawall impacts into the future. “The sand nourishment component is linked to council’s entrance dredging strategy of Lake Cathie.” The CZMP covers 3.5 km of beach centred on Lake Cathie entrance which is located south of Port Macquarie between Tacking Point and Middle Rock. The development of the CZMP was overseen by council’s Coast and Estuaries Sub-Committee with representatives from council, state government agencies and community groups. Mrs Williams said she was pleased the development of the CZMP had involved significant community engagement. “There has been extensive community consultation during all stages of the CZMP development process and the resulting CZMP reflects their active involvement,” Ms Williams said. “The council has been diligent and committed to finalising a plan that meets necessary requirements and has the broad support of the community they serve,” she said. Mr Stokes and Mrs Williams acknowledge the expert technical support provided by staff from the Office of Environment and Heritage who assisted council in developing the CZMP plan.

Tuffins call ‘disappointing’ THERE was plenty to note from this month’s November meeting of Port Macquarie-Hastings Council. Cr Sharon Griffiths put forward a motion in the chamber that would see council’s General Manager prepare a report on what options council had available to acquire or secure tenure of the Tuffins Lane Sports fields. Incredibly, not one other councillor supported Cr Griffiths in exploring options for its acquisition or retention for use as sporting fields. What is most disappointing is that there is no genuine reason as to why council couldn’t or shouldn’t re-start negotiations with the current land owner to secure our sporting future and one wonders why the sporting community is being treated with contempt on this issue. Moving onto the portfolios for the new council and we see pretty much business as usual for this new four-year term as the Portfolio system remains relatively unchanged apart from a minor re-shuffle to accommodate some new faces. Unfortunately, what we saw in the last
Port MacquarieHastings Council
term was far from ideal with a number of the portfolios racing each other to the bottom as far as performance goes with some pretty dire consequences for the community. The Roads and Infrastructure Portfolio took the state of our local roads backwards at a rate of knots where the backlog grew to more than $225,000,000 according to an NRMA report with the same report rating one of our roads as the worst in the State. The approach to the Major Projects portfolio saw many projects delayed, shelved and cost blow outs into the millions of dollars on some projects and I personally have never seen more

Popular Tank radio needs top-up
COMMUNITY radio is a stalwart of regional and rural communities but these volunteer-run services often struggle with major costs. Macleay Valley community radio station Tank FM needs help to relocate to new premises and upgrade its broadcasting equipment. To achieve this mammoth task, and to reward its supporters, the station is holding a radiothon this weekend. Radiothon participants have the chance to win the major prize of two return airfares, between Port Macquarie and Melbourne, on the new JETGO service. Radiothon organising committee member Andrew Kerr said the station is extremely grateful to the many businesses, near and far, that have generously supported the fundraiser

by donating prizes. Licensed as 2WET, the station is affectionately called Tank FM because it broadcasts from within a disused concrete water reservoir overlooking the Macleay River. Sadly, this space has reached its used-by date so the station is building new premises at 59 Elbow Street, West Kempsey. The equipment, much of which predates the digital era, is also in need of replacement. Tank FM radiothon supporters can donate at any Coastline Credit Union office, at the new Tank FM office, or at their mobile-studio broadcast on Friday, November 25, in front of the West Kempsey Post Office. To win one of the great prizes, monies must be in by Wednesday, November 30.

By Adam Roberts - Former Councillor,
‘spin’ come out of council as we saw under the Communications Portfolio. Councillor Griffiths it seems was the only councillor not happy with the failing system of Portfolios and is recorded as having voted against the new, old, system and approach. All councilors except for Cr Griffiths (who said during the campaign that she would not support rate rises) agreed to express its interest to the Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal (IPART) to permanently raise rates 4.43% which would be on top of approximately another 2.5% allowed under Rate Pegging. Expressing interest to raise rates in the middle of council’s current period of consultation with the community on future rate levels shows that regardless of the feedback garnered from the community on rate levels, council intends to raise rates anyway. TEACHING, training and retaining the next generation of health workers in rural, regional and remote Australia is a priority for the Coalition Government. The Coalition Government has moved to streamline the former Rural and Regional Teaching Infrastructure Grants program to better respond to the needs of rural communities and support the work of rural general practices. Through the week, as Assistant Minister for Rural Health, I announced the Rural General Practice Grants (RGPG) program and said it will provide $13.1m for infrastructure grants for existing general practices in regional, rural and remote Australia. General practice in rural Australia faces unique challenges in healthcare including the ability to attract and retain a health workforce. The RGPG program will enable existing health facilities to provide teaching and training opportunities for a range of health professionals within the practice and for practitioners to develop experience in training and supervising healthcare workers. I believe that strong, accessible primary care in regional Australia helps alleviate pressure on the public hospital system and at the same time it also provides opportunities for earlier intervention and better patient outcomes. A more streamlined and simplified twostep application process opened on Monday, November 21 through the new Rural General Practice Grants Program. More info: www.health.gov.au/tenders

Great action that’s no bull! THE best professional bullriders in the country, and the best bulls from across NSW and QLD, will converge in Kempsey next Saturday. December 3 will see one of the most anticipated events in the Professional Bull Riders Australia calendar. The Farley Brothers Charity Bullride has raised $28,000 for Westpac Helicopter Rescue over the last four events. This year organiser Pete Farley hopes to reach his goal of $10,000. This figure is the same as the total prize kitty to be shared among those riders who manage to stay atop their bull for 8 seconds and score the most points out of 100. “Eight seconds doesn’t sound like a lot,” former national champion Pete Farley says, “but is an eternity when you are trying to do it.” A random draw will determine which rider gets which bull. One lucky person will ride Troy and Holly Keliher’s bull Hillbilly Deluxe, winner of the PBR 2016 Bucking Bull of the Year. “You want a good bull that combines buck with spin,” Pete says. Gates to the event at Kempsey Showground,
Don’t miss the bullriding action at Kempsey next Saturday, December 3 at 19 Sea Street, will open at 4pm. Money to help prepare for flooding
PORT Macquarie-Hastings Council has received a $326,667 NSW Government Floodplain Management grant to help introduce measures to prepare Port Macquarie for flooding, Member for Port Macquarie Leslie Williams has announced. Mrs Williams said the grant was part of $4.59 million in grants to 43 projects under the NSW Government Floodplain Management Program. “This grant will help the council address flood
risks and the community prepare for possible flooding,” Mrs Williams said. The council received the funding grant for the Boundary Street flood access design and the North Brother Local Catchments Flood study. Environment Minister Mark Speakman said the grant program aimed to reduce the impacts of flooding and flood liability.

Cruise Terminal ‘pays it forward’ LIFE and business partners, Rebecca, pictured, and Michael Rowsthorne, moved to Port Macquarie 18 months ago and embarked on a journey of epic proportions. In just over 12 months they have grown their business, The Cruise Terminal, and found their family a niche in the Mid North Coast community. The couple work tirelessly in their business while maintaining a stable family life for their children and contribute to many community events. The Cruise Terminal likes to ‘pay it forward’ and each year on Australia Day raises funds and donates the takings to local organisation, Sailability. The hard work is paying off for Rebecca, Michael and their team - in the first year of business The Cruise Terminal were finalists in the Mid North Coast Tourism Awards and the Greater Port Macquarie Business awards! Rebecca said: “The business has expanded significantly over the last 12 months. We now offer whale watching tours, Port Macquarie’s

All the Good stuff in our Community
smacked! All the Good stuff in our Community
Humble service the key A MOVEMENT of Christian Surfers had been formed in Cronulla in 1977 with a number of groups forming up the NSW Coast and into Queensland. In the early days Christian Surfers was fractured with divisions based on leadership egos, church doctrine and power-plays. It was hard to see how this exciting movement amongst Christian Surfers could ever be united and impact the surfing community for Christ. Despite several conferences and attempts to form a Christian Surfers Australia-wide group it seemed to be thwarted. Following the inaugural Jesus Surf Classic at Burleigh Heads, attended by over 1000 people and attracting TV coverage, a meeting of the various Christian Surfer groups was called. Bonny Hills Christian Surfer George Watt along with many other surfers met in a local hall. There was intense lobbying for leadership and rivalry between Pentecostal and Evangelical camps. A young 23-year-old industrial arts teacher, Brett Davis was struggling with what he saw in the meeting and the church politics that were being played-out by various people in the group. Brett prayed and felt God remind him of Jesus’ example of servanthood by washing His disciples’ feet. The more Brett reflected on this, the more he felt God was encouraging him to wash the feet of the people at the meeting. With heart pounding and teeth clenched, Brett went into the kitchen and grabbed a bowl, some water and a towel and came into the room. He knelt down and began washing each surfers’ feet. The meeting fell silent as Brett washed one surfer’s feet after the other with tears in his eyes and he told them all he wanted to do was serve them. God did something that day. Brett was encouraged to seek the leadership of Christian Surfers with unanimous support and he became Australia’s National Leader of Christian Surfers. Brett went on to lead Christian Surfers International. One of the core values of the movement has always been humble service. Christian tours WHY not travel the world with like-minded people? Christian Fellowship Tours are becoming more popular as Christian travellers seek the company of other Christians. Their travel program includes destinations such as The Murray River, outback Queensland, the UK, a European River cruise, the ‘Steps of Paul’ cruise around the Aegean Sea, the Land of the Bible and a tour tracing the 500th anniversary of the Reformation. However, it’s the friendships and experiences that are bringing travellers back time and time again. “One of the things that we constantly get told from people when they come back from the tours is that they really enjoyed the fellowship and travelling with like-minded people,” said Michael Mallin, Extended Tours Manager at the Christian Fellowship Tours. “So many times people have gone on tour and met somebody and they have become life-long friends.” Although the Christian Fellowship Tours are similar to other tours in that they include all the exciting destination points and site seeing, the unique experience of being able to pray with others and stay at some of the world’s most wellknown churches sets it apart. “They are still the same as our other standard tours,” said Mr Mallin. “The main difference is that on Sundays we will plan to go to a church service and each day we do morning or daily devotions. “Next year our UK coach tour will include all the site seeing that our other tour does, but we’ve actually planned things like staying in the grounds of the Canterbury Cathedral for instance.” For a chance to chat about the range of holidays, and to meet John the founding director, and Nancie Cronshaw , a number of coffee, cake and chat mornings have been planned anytime between 10am and 2pm in Kempsey, Port Macquarie, Laurieton and Bonny Hills. Laurieton’s gathering will take place on Monday, November 28, at the Salt n Pepper Café, 80 Bold Street. Kempsey’s get-together will be held on Wednesday, November 30, at Lou’s Café, Belgrave Street. Port Macquarie’s will be on Thursday, December 1, at the Rydges Hotel, 1 Hay Street. Bonny Hills’ is on Saturday, December 3, at My Bonny Place, Jungarra Crescent. CEO shows real leadership
LIFELINE Australia is pleased to announce that Ruralco CEO Travis Dillon has donated his full cash bonus of $140,000 to the national charity as part of his personal dedication to stopping rural suicide. Lifeline Australia Chairman John Brogden said the donation builds upon Ruralco’s commitment to rural health and suicide prevention, with Mr Dillon setting a wonderful example for other CEOs and the lifesaving difference they can make. “As far as I’m aware, this is the first time that an Australian CEO has proactively donated their full cash bonus, let alone in such a whole-hearted and pragmatic way,” Mr Brogden said. “Mr Dillon has gone above and beyond in making this personal decision to help Lifeline answer 5500 additional crisis calls. This helps ensure that no suicidal person has to be alone, and gives hope that many families, friends and whole communities never have to experience the profound loss of losing someone they love to suicide.” Mr Brogden said the national charity has

strongly encouraged Mr Dillon to talk about his donation publically, not just because of the example it sets around CEO incentives, but because of the positive community impact it can have. “To people in rural, regional and remote areas, this decision sends a strong message that you are not alone, suicide is a whole-ofcommunity issue and we are in this together. This same commitment from Ruralco was clearly evident during the recent Victorian Dairy Crisis, with the company running a media campaign to promote Lifeline’s services to affected communities and encourage those impacted to seek help,” Mr Brogden said. Mr Dillon, who approached Lifeline in February this year, believes Ruralco can play a vital role in tackling Australia’s suicide emergency, particularly in rural, regional and remote areas. For 24/7 crisis or suicide prevention support, please call Lifeline on 13 11 14 or visit lifeline.org.au

All the Good stuff in our Community
So, is God left-handed? IS God Left-handed? Firstly, my apology to the person who asked this question, for taking such a long time to answer. The simple answer is Yes and No. While there are references to the right hand of God in the Bible, the truth is that God has no hands at all. God is Spirit and those who worship Him must worship Him in spirit and truth (John 4:23-24). It is also not true that God has a bias against ‘left-handed people’. It is unfortunate that the word ‘left-handed’ in Latin means ‘sinister’. Some left-handers are referred to as ‘kackyhanders’ or ‘southpaws’. Whilst it is true that in the Bible goats are described to the left and sheep on the right (Jesus’ parable in Matthew 25:31-33), this is not meant to be detrimental, but simply portraying a division. In Isaiah 30:21 – “Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, “This is the way, walk in it.” There are many references in the Bible describing God’s strong right arm or hand – the song of Moses in Exodus 15:6, David in Psalm 18:35, 44:3, 118:15-16 are some examples. There are also several references to Jesus at the rightside of God interceding/praying for us… Acts 7:55 & Romans 8:34. These are references to God’s strength and power and we are urged to seek after the Right Hand of God. Some year ago I conducted a funeral for a

lady from Kempsey. She was a matriarch of her family and had been a great strength to many of her children and grandchildren over the years. At the funeral, I quoted Psalm 63:8 and said to the family present that while their Mother and Grandmother had been the source of their strength now they would need to put their trust in God and let Him gather them in His strong right arm. At this moment there was an outburst of grief from many of the family members. Outside the chapel, several family members came to me and said, “How did you know?” “Know what?’ I replied. They said: “How did I know that their Gran was paralysed down the left-side and had always held them in her strong right arm?” It was a great encouragement to the family to know that God cared for them this much and now they could be embraced by God’s strong right arm. If you are struggling today, or feeling lost and lonely, turn to Jesus and let God’s strong right arm embrace you and feel His Love.
Talented Life Church Lake Cathie musicians will lead traditional carols at their parksetting celebration
Celebrate the real Christmas PEOPLE who enjoy traditional carols celebrations which embrace the true meaning of Christmas - and time spent with community will revel at this event. Life Church Lake Cathie will host Carols in the Park on Saturday, December 10. The celebration last year had a great family atmosphere, said Pastor Ron Hefren. “Our whole reason for putting on Carols in the Park is to embrace the reason for the season, which is Jesus. “When you drop Jesus out of it the real reason for Christmas is gone.” This did not mean the event would be heavily religious, he said, but would be a celebration of the birth of Christ. Speaker Kevin Young will deliver a message of faith in the leafy park setting. Children are free to have their face painted, explore a fire truck and meet Father Christmas. You are invited to pitch a picnic rug or chair from 5pm and enjoy shared fare until the
main celebration kicks off at 6pm. Talented musicians will play a range of music with a traditional carols set. Life Church found its home in Lake Cathie 18 months ago after Pastor Hefron retired. “I couldn’t stand being retired,” he said. “I really felt the Lord say to me he wanted me to plant a church.” It was suggested he look at the Community Centre on Lake Cathie’s Mullaway Street, behind Coles. “I was astounded by size of the facility and my heart just rushed,” Pastor Hefron said. “From that moment on I knew that was where we had to go.” The opening night was well-attended and now up to 30 people attend Sunday service. The Lake Cathie Community Centre grounds will hold around 500 people and the hall can accommodate around 250, so there is a dry place to celebrate if it rains.
Bear sales will help local charities A LOCAL business will donate $8 profit, from teddy bear sales, to the Salvation Army, Ronald McDonald House in Forster and Port Macquarie’s Christmas on the Beach. Calendar Club owners Jo and Lee Sanders will offer a $12.99 bear for $4.99 with each sale over $25. This gives you the opportunity to give twice. “Many customers have even donated back the bears so we can help these charities at Christmas,” Mr Sanders said.
The Salvation Army provides struggling families with gifts and food to make Christmas a celebration. Ronald McDonaldHouse in Forster provides free accommodation to families of children suffering from cancer. Port Macquarie City Church holds Christmas at Town Beach for hundreds of people each year who are celebrating Christmas without family. To help out visit the Calendar Club in Port Macquarie’s Settlement City.

Enterta nment WEEKLY
Double trouble! ONE crack-up comedian in town is something but two equal a show not to be missed. Aussie stand-ups Gretel Killeen and Jackie Loeb, pictured, bring their special brand of humour to the Laurieton United Services Club this Saturday night. The pair, who have performed together each year for the last three, have teamed up to present We Don’t Like Young People. Los Angeles-based Jackie Loeb is not just a terrific singer and great musician but has a unique sense of humour, Gretel Killeen says. “Jackie’s passion is comedy and she adores singing and is always making up songs.” Not only does the former Full Frontal stalwart have the special skill set of delivering comedy through music, Gretel says, but she is kind, funny and a ‘good egg’. The Sydney ‘girls’ perform their show individually with social commentary from Gretel first. “I have children so I have to be kinder than Jackie,” she says. “Also I do meet some extraordinary young people – I’m a huge fan of young people.” Her routine explores the generation gap, says Gretel, who is also a prolific author of books for young people. Gretel grew up in a time when children didn’t speak until spoken to. “And even then it didn’t really happen because adults weren’t interested in what we had

Port club hosts outrigger titles Greg Smith encourages others to get out on the water and paddle for mental and physical fitness.
What an oarsome sport By NIKALA SIM
THE sport he has pursued with a passion for the last 35 years has helped him get to know himself, Greg Smith says. “I started paddling in my teens just getting out on white water having a bit of fun,” the Port Macquarie resident says. “Then I found out about the 110km Hawkesbury Canoe Classic and thought I’d have a crack at that. “I got totally the wrong kayak to start with but worked that out after a couple of weeks so got another one. “After the 40km mark I was stuffed and watched a 65-year-old lady paddle past me and

finish the race.” Greg realised he needed to learn to paddle properly so joined a kayak club. You can paddle for as long as you want and not get sore when you use the correct technique, he says. “It’s basically about correct posture and the same as sitting in a chair.” The whole paddling technique will automatically develop core strength, Greg says, and is pretty much an all-round body sport. The Hawkesbury Canoe Classic is a fundraiser event as are most of the major races in Australia. This year Greg ticked off his 26th Hawkesbury with a time of ten hours with one

Kayaking is also a great sport with which to get to know yourself, Greg says. “I think I understand myself as a person quite well because of kayaking. “I can deal with times of adversity because I have developed perseverance. “I also find I can maintain the determination to complete something once I have started.” When you race in a kayak you are internally racing yourself, he says.

ELITE paddlers from throughout the state will descend on Port Macquarie this weekend to contest the 2016 NSW OC1/2 Outrigger Titles. The Port Macquarie Maroro Outrigger Club will be hosting the event across two days, attracting up to 100 of the state’s best paddlers to the region. An 18km ‘Big Hill Challenge’ for single and double canoes between Port Macquarie and Point Plomer will be the feature event of the weekend. Paddlers will also compete in a short course (10km) event for single and double canoes and the regatta will finish with short and long course OC6 events on Sunday. Race Director Wes Byrnes said the final racing format would not be known until a day or two before the event. “The OC1/2 long course on Saturday will be run ‘downwind’, so we will have to wait and see what the conditions are like,” he said. “The most likely scenario is that paddlers will start at Point Plomer and race down the coast to a finish line off Lady Nelson Wharf. However, if the wind swings around from the south we will start at the wharf and head north. “The short course paddlers will cover a triangle-shaped course, heading out from Lady Nelson Wharf around Bird Rock and finishing back at the wharf. “If conditions on the bar become unsafe, we will use an alternate course in the Hastings River, but regardless of the format there will be plenty of opportunities to watch some good racing in the river mouth and off Town Green.” Byrnes said the OC1/2 short course would commence at 10am on Saturday, with the long course starting at 1pm. OC6 racing on Sunday will start from the Lady Nelson Wharf at 9am. Maroro Outriggers president Karen Newman said the club had been enormously grateful to the community for its support of the event. NTPs 5th David Dale 231 cm; 7th David Neville 80 cm; 13th David Greentree 48 cm; 16th Phil Johnson 289 cm. Ball rundown 34 on a c/b.
