Sharing paradise Welcome mat is out to young working familes By BARBARA DYER CITY leaders have welcomed the news that Port Macquarie Hastings area has secured funding to entice more young families and workers to the region. Local MP Leslie Williams said the Port Macquarie Hastings area would be promoted as an ideal place to live and work after securing a share of a $1 million dollar NSW Government fund to encourage young families and workers in Sydney to make the move to regional NSW. The local win came on the back of a $27,000 marketing campaign currently being processed by the Port Macquarie-Hastings Council and to be run over two months later in the year. Some 20 organisations across regional NSW secured funding under the $1 million Regional Growth – Marketing and Promotion Fund, enabling them to explore a range of marketing tools; develop virtual reality experiences, expos for new residents, marketing campaigns and relocation kits to encourage skilled workers,
young families and businesses to move out of the city. “I am delighted to see our area secure funding as part of the initiative,” said Mrs Williams. “These campaigns will appeal to businesses wanting to expand into new markets, skilled workers looking to escape the city rat race and young families seeking a more relaxed lifestyle. “I can’t wait to see the Port Macquarie Hastings region showcased online.” Port Macquarie-Hasting Council Director Strategy and Growth, Jeffery Sharp said the news was good for the region, adding the local campaign would be business orientated. “Council is very pleased to have been successful in its application for matched funding under the Regional Growth – Marketing and Promotion Fund,” Mr Sharp said. The Council application was supported by the Port Macquarie Chamber of Commerce and Regional Development Australia Mid-North Coast. • Continued Page 10

Tastes like more success By BARBARA DYER

THE smile on Jane Hillsdon’s face is, if possible, even bigger and brighter than usual. She has just learned that she is one of three finalists in her category in the Australian Marketing Institute Awards for Marketing Excellence. “I’m so stoked to be up there with all the big Sydney agencies,” the Port Macquarie marketing guru says. And her exuberance was even greater, she said, because the nomination was for one of her favourite marketing campaigns, Tastings on Hastings, 2016. The weekend event showcases the region’s farmers, artisans, food producers, wine growers, brewers, restaurants and cafes. Now it its 15th year, Port MacquarieHastings Council’s Tastings has grown to become one of the most recognised and wellpatronised events on the regional calendar. “It was our fourth year working on the campaign for our client Marketplace, and I felt it was our best result,” says Jane, wondering out loud how she can contain her excitement between now and October 18 when she attends the gala dinner in Melbourne to learn if she has been successful. She must have breathed a great sigh of relief that the gala awards night is on the 18th – a week later and it would have come on top of this year’s Tastings on Hastings which runs October 27-29, and which Jane and her Dragonfly Marketing team are working on for their fifth year. A win in the category would be the icing on the decade-old cake for her agency; Jane started up Dragonfly Marketing when she and her young family moved from Sydney 11 years ago. With three kids, a husband and the business, some may wonder where she finds her energy. But it’s easy to be energetic when your work is also your passion, she says adding that her social nature is a good fit for the marketing arena. Staying fit for triathlon races also keeps her energy levels up. Dragonfly Marketing earned Jane her finals place for the Australian Marketing Institute awards in the category for small budget marketing. “Our budget for Tastings on Hastings is minute,” she says. “I don’t think we even came close to the budget limit on the category.” Clearly, then, Jane has what money can’t buy because the event continues to grow in popularity. “I think when I wrote my submission, I wrote it with emotion and passion,” she says. “I put into it what I put into my campaigns. “I showed them the pride I have in my work; my passion for story-telling. “I outlined the campaign, the solution and the results.
Marketplace event co-ordinator Necia Waghorn, left, and marketing guru Jane Hillsdon are gearing up for another great Port Macquarie-Hastings Tastings on Hastings. Jane is a finalist in the Australian Marketing Institute Awards for Marketing Excellence for last year’s successful Tastings. “We were thrilled with our results for Tastings continuing to advertise this year’s event which, on Hastings, and guess that is why I am in the she hopes, will top last year’s. “Last year our brief was to promote the event finals.” Jane says no matter what the result, she locally on the Mid North Coast, with the goal is taking on a field which is usually heavily of exceeding the previous year’s attendance of weighted by Sydney and Melbourne metro-based 17,000 people,” she said. “The key to our success, was to be nimble and agencies. reactive; able to capitalise on new opportunities “To be among the finalists – wow!” With her feet back on the ground, Jane is and working with stakeholders who signed up at

the last minute. We had to blast the news out quickly, and we did that mainly through social media for its immediacy, combined with print advertising and radio interviews. “The result was that 20,000 attended. “This year we have the added challenge that our usual venue on the foreshore is a construction site. “We have had to move the three-day event towards the bridge; it will be as big on events but in a smaller area. We think the smaller footprint will really add to the energy. “We will back-up the main festival day on Saturday with some really strong satellite events.” Whether or not Jane is a winner on October 18, that beaming smile will be on her face come the weekend of October 27-29. And, she hopes, on the faces of more than 20,000 visitors to Tastings on Hastings. This year’s Port Macquarie-Hastings Council Tastings on Hastings theme is FireWaterHarvest. The main event is on Saturday from noon-8pm.

WOW! I just can’t believe the
The good/bad on climate change THE good news about climate change: Carbon Dioxide or CO2 is an odourless, colourless gas that makes up around 0.04% of the Earth’s atmosphere. Of that tiny amount of CO2, nature produces about 97% and humans 3% each year. CO2 is not a pollutant, in fact, it is plant food and increased levels of CO2 in the atmosphere are beneficial for forests and crops. CO2 is also one of the minor greenhouse gases along with methane, ozone and nitrous oxide. Water vapour is the major greenhouse gas. Greenhouse gases trap some of the heat from the sun that radiates away from the earth’s surface maintaining a habitable temperature. Without greenhouse gases the earth would freeze. CO2 does not drive the temperature but rather is a consequence of temperature; therefore increased
levels of CO2 in the atmosphere are not the cause of warming. The climate changes between warming and cooling cycles over decades, centuries or much longer time periods and mankind has adapted and survived for thousands of years in these changing climates. Current weather events are not unusual or extreme. The Bureau of Meteorology does not take into account temperature records prior to 1910, however, Australia’s worst heatwaves occurred in the late 19th century, in particular the 1896 heatwave at Bourke and surrounding areas which lasted 6 weeks with highs of 53C in the shade and the temperature never fell below 37C at night. http://trove.nla.gov.au/ newspaper/article/46050184 The bad news about climate change: We have been misled and lied to by the United Nations Intergovernmental

predictions of future catastrophic warming, sea level rise and extreme weather events now form the basis for a trillion dollar industry to remedy a problem that does not exist. Tax payer funded organisations, government departments, schools, greens, subsidised renewable energy companies and the media are all regurgitating the same false information that has been presented to them by the IPCC, however, repeating a lie over and over again doesn’t make it the truth. Perhaps the most shameful aspect of this scandal is that 2 billion people living in poverty will remain that way if they are denied access to affordable and reliable electricity from coal fired power. Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and the United Nations Environmental Program (UNEP) about the causes and impacts of ‘climate change’. IPCC reports ignore empirical scientific evidence and exclude examining natural forces on the climate. They have manipulated data and temperature records, published false statements about scientific consensus and disregarded opposing opinion from dozens of independent climate scientists. The ‘climate gate’ emails expose the devious tactics of the IPCC’s core group of scientists to conceal their data from outside scrutiny and fabricate evidence to support the global warming hoax. The bogus reports of the IPCC have been adopted by governments and policy makers worldwide and the UN agenda for global control is well underway. Dubious computer model
mindset of our country. What a bunch of bigoted, racist, homophobic, spoilt pratts we have become! Really! All this carrying on about dual citizenship and eligibility to serve as politicians? Here’s a heads up. Unless you are a full-blooded Indigenous Australian, you are going to be able to claim dual citizenship by decent … somewhere, somehow! In fact, if we hauled every full-blooded indigenous Australian in to run the various levels of government – Federal, State and Local – we would save heaps of taxpayer money. There wouldn’t be enough real Aussies to fill the seats. The Same Sex Marriage plebiscite, now watered down to a postal survey is much more. It’s cringe-worthy, divisive, shameful and can only be described as a complete debacle! Some of my most treasured friends are in same sex relationships - healthier relationships than most of my married heterosexual friends to be honest. Being married doesn’t make you a better partner or parent. Marriage doesn’t make you better at anything. The reality is marriage is a huge industry that sells you a fairy tale, often far from the reality. Maybe it’s time to take a different perspective? If you’re not happy in your marriage, get a divorce. Let’s collectively say no to traditional marriage until the marriage act is fair and everyone can enjoy a marriage of quality and equality. Hit the industry where it hurts and see the glitter hit the fan!

Vital funds to Legacy

By SUE PATERICK A GENEROUS $5000 donation from the Kempsey/Macleay RSL Club to Mid North Coast (MNC) Legacy on Wednesday August 9 will help provide much-needed support to 180 members in the Kempsey region. The Club’s Board Chairman, Paul McGregor, said the RSL’s ethos has always been generous to Legacy. “Every year the RSL makes a donation to Legacy, and this year it is $5000,” he added. As he collected the cheque from Mr McGregor, MNC Legacy Division Secretary, Bruce Morris, thanked him on behalf of the 290 families in the Kempsey and Nambucca shires who will benefit. Both Divisions joined together in 2012 to become MNC Legacy. “This donation marks a tremendous start to Legacy Week in the region from Sunday August 27 to Saturday September 2,” Mr Morris said. He urged everyone to get behind this worthy cause and buy a Legacy badge from one of the many volunteers who will be out and about during Legacy Week. For more than 90 years Legacy has provided practical, emotional and financial support to over 70,000 widows, families, and dependants, who have lost a parent or spouse, due to serious

“Every time a service man or woman deploys, their family is also at risk.” Mr Morris was also grateful to the Kempsey/ Macleay RSL Club for allowing Legacy to sell raffle tickets on the premises on the fourth Friday night of every month, and for donating meal
vouchers to the Club’s Freshwater Grill or Café Fresh served with the best river views in town. He also thanked the RSL Sub-Branch behind the Club for allowing Legacy to use their rooms for its regular meetings. Legacy is a volunteer organisation and there are 19 Legatees in Kempsey and 16 in Nambucca. “Being a Legatee is very rewarding,” Mr Morris said. “More dedicated volunteers are always needed to spread the load and help support the families of our veterans.” If you are interested in becoming a Legacy volunteer contact Janelle English on 6598 8502. To support this Legacy Week, either buy a badge or make a donation at www. legacyweekappeal.com.au “Our servicemen and women must always know that should they lose their lives or health in the course of their duty, the rest of Australia will look after their families through Legacy,” Mr Morris added. “We ask everyone to think about the families left behind and ask that you support them in any way you can.”

Mary turns 100 ... her way By BARBARA DYER IT seems that around the time people want to forget their birthdays, everyone else wants to remember them. Once you reach the magic 100, even the Queen gets in on the celebration, sending a card and good wishes. Mary Beaton reached that milestone last week, and celebrated with about 50 family and friends at the Pancake Place, where the birthday girl indulged her sweet tooth. “Ask Mum the secret to her long life and she will tell you – lots of chocolates, sugar and biscuits,” laughs daughter Margaret Gaul, the youngest of Mary’s three children, born in 1954 after twins Doreen and Donald who were born in 1947. “She likes pretty much anything that’s bad for you. Mum has a real sweet tooth.” Margaret laughs. Most times when she is talking about her mum, she is laughing. Mary Beaton enjoys her quiet life at Uniting Mingaletta aged care although, Margaret says “she doesn’t like being told what to do”. Margaret laughs again. Longevity is in the family genes but Margaret knows she is blessed to see her Mum reach 100 and to see her surrounded by family on her special day. Clearly Mary gave her kids a good life. But it was not easy. In fact, it was hard when Mary divorced early and raised her young family alone. Mary Alice Beaton was born on August 14, 1917, in Malta. She was born into a world torn by war, on

Mary Beaton, pictured with her youngest daughter Margaret Gaul, recently celebrated her 100th birthday with family and friends an island which was being used as an island hospital. At a safe distance from the front line, Malta became a hospital island for more than 136,000 men. By the end of the war it had earned itself the nickname the ‘Nurse of the Mediterranean’. But baby Mary was oblivious to her surroundings, though it no doubt toughened her up for later life. Mary married Norman Beaton who, Margaret says, was perhaps scarred by war. At any rate, she says, her dad drank a bit. “It was a tough decision all those years ago. Mum and Dad had married and lived in Malta but Dad was an army man and he basically followed the war around,” says Margaret. “We came to Australia, but the marriage ended and when I was about two, Mum took us back to Malta where we had family. “Then my uncle Eddie – Mum’s brother – and his wife moved to Australia and decided to settle there. “So, when I was about seven, our family and my grandmother moved back to Australia and lived with my uncle and his wife in Sydney.” Mary set about supporting herself and her children. She had been a piano teacher, but she was prepared to take on anything, from
waitressing and cleaning in cafes to cleaning houses. “Mum was brave. I think she was brave to do what she did. And she still is extremely independent,” Margaret laughs. “She likes things her own way. She spent most of her life doing what she wanted. “It was a big thing back then to be a single mother. Mum is thoughtful and loving. “Yes, we kids are all very well-loved.” Mary maintained her independence, living in a little flat in Hillsdale, a Sydney suburb. But about five years ago a leg injury forced her to move to Port Macquarie to her youngest daughter. The climate and the pace suits this 100-yearold lady. “Mum has no sense of timing,” laughs Margaret. “She is laid back, doesn’t stress. “Anytime I was planning to pick Mum up, you could bet if I arrived on time at 1pm, she wouldn’t be ready until 2pm. “We used to put her clocks forward an hour just to try to get to where we were going on time.” As for ignoring birthdays – not Mary. “She loves birthdays,” says Margaret.

“But she was really surprised by how many people travelled great distances to celebrate with her. “There were cousins we had not seen since we were kids; nieces, nephews. Friends. Heaps of us. “It was a wonderful reunion and everyone was quite overwhelmed. “Mum didn’t want any presents. She doesn’t have a lot of room. “She was just happy that people were there and that she got cards and letters from The Queen and politicians. “And of course, she was pretty happy with the cake which was supposed to be a tiramisu and mud cake but ended up being an alcoholic fudge sort of cake. “It was rich and sweet so Mum enjoyed it.” Margaret laughs again. It was a birthday party full of happy memories, untold stories, and laughs. It was a day that was all about her mother, family, The Queen’s card and rich cake, said Margaret. “It was everything a 100th birthday party should be,” she said. “And Mum is everything you could want your mother to be.”

Add magic to kids’ book week By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC IT’S Children’s Book Week and there’s magic in the air. Across Australia children and books will be brought together by the Children’s Book Council Australia through libraries, booksellers, authors, and illustrators. Wendy Haynes, President of the Port Writer’s Inc, says that it’s important to have the right sort of books available there for children to want to read. “It encourages them to look beyond what is in front of them and learn new skills from reading,” Wendy explains. “What makes a good children’s book depends on how the reader engages with the text and the pictures. For a child, it enhances their imagination and I think that’s what they love about reading.” Not only will children discover new books and authors but they will also be able to pick up a very special limited edition Possum Magic design $2 coin released from Woolworth stores in Lake Cathie, Kempsey, Lakewood and Port Macquarie. “For 34 years, Australians have read this wonderful story of Hush and Grandma Poss and their whimsical adventures around the country,” said Mr Ross MacDiarmid, Royal Australian Mint CEO. “We are thrilled to be able to immortalise the story (Possum Magic) for generations to come through this collector coin series.” The creator of Hush and Grandma Poss couldn’t be happier with her indent on Australian history. “No one can imagine the level of my excitement at the real magic that’s happened, thanks to the Royal Australian Mint and Woolworths,” said Mem Fox, Possum Magic author. “Nothing could be more magical than turning Possum Magic from a book into a collection of coins. I’m dizzy with amazement,
Mem Fox, Author of Possum Magic, with Royal Australian Mint CEO, Ross McDiarmid launching the limited edition Possum Magic $2 coins at Woolworths. Funds a boost for key public facilities
MEMBER for Oxley, Melinda Pavey MP, has announced a range of financial contributions for upkeep works and measures at our local public reserves. Mrs Pavey said the allocations are part of the NSW Government’s Public Reserves Management Fund which supports the community’s highly-valued public assets. “Our state-owned public reserves are very important for our communities and this funding will directly contribute to the upkeep of their amenity and infrastructure,” she said. Across the state, 440 projects will benefit from $15 million in the latest round of the Public Reserves Management Fund. “Here in Oxley we have 10 successful projects that will be funded in 2017-18”, Mrs Pavey said. • Bellingen Showground - drainage infrastructure upgrade: $60,203 • Bellingen Showground - tree safety program: $13,201 • Deep Creek, Nambucca Shire – removal of Groundsel Bush: $4,950 • Grassy Head Reserve - weed control of the coastal corridor: $20,000 • Kempsey Showground - replace and upgrade pathways: $37,865 • Swimming Creek, Nambucca Heads control invasive weeds: $16,500 • North Beach Reserve, Bellinger Heads install shade sails: $25,168 • Macleay River riparian Crown Lands control Tropical Soda Apple: $38,600 • Rollands Plains Showground: new canteen: $50,303 • Rotary Lookout, Nambucca Heads: various upgrade works: $29,080 Minister for Lands and Forestry, Paul Toole MP, said $94 million has been invested over the last six years in the upgrade of showgrounds, the repair of buildings, bushfire hazard reduction, weed control and building new infrastructure. “Showgrounds are important community hubs. This year, 38 showground trusts have been awarded more than $2.5 million for much-needed upgrades.” “I want to congratulate all of our hardworking Crown reserve trusts on the great job they do managing and maintaining our public assets right across NSW,” Mr Toole said.
Get facts on immunisation THE Coalition Government has launched a new ‘Get the Facts about Immunisation’ campaign to encourage Australian parents and carers to get their kids vaccinated. We know parents want evidence-based information to support decision making about childhood vaccinations, so we’re making it easier to ‘get the facts’ about immunisation. Immunisation rates in Australia are already high, with over 93 per cent of five-year-old children fully vaccinated. But there are some areas where the immunisation rate is too low. It is these areas of low coverage which pose risks to the community, especially to people who can’t be vaccinated, like newborns and those with medical reasons. The new $5.5 million campaign will reach parents in these areas through child care services and online communication channels, such as social media. Research has shown that when people are fully informed about the benefits of vaccination, they are more likely to vaccinate. This includes important facts such as: • Vaccines strengthen your child’s immune system. • All childhood diseases we vaccinate against can cause serious illness, including death. • All vaccines available in Australia have been

thoroughly tested for safety and effectiveness and are continually monitored. • Immunisation is a safe and effective way of giving protection against diseases such as whooping cough and measles. Stories of parents losing their young children to these horrible diseases are simply heartbreaking which can be seen first-hand through the ordeals of the Hughes and McCaffery families, who shared their heart-breaking stories as part of the campaign. Riley Hughes and Dana McCaffery were both only a month old when they died of a vaccinepreventable disease. They were both too young to be vaccinated, so like all other newborns, relied on the rest of the community being vaccinated to offer protection. You can find out more information about the campaign by visiting www.immunisationfacts. gov.au.
I HAD to drive around some roadworks the other day. The sign included the word alternate, but it meant that I was to drive around the work until the job was finished. It made no difference to me. But why was the word alternate used? It reminded me of a few years ago when I received a call from a mayor of a western NSW town who complained that he was having a dispute with his staff over the word alternate. I gave him my opinion. I never asked him whether the matter was resolved to the satisfaction of everybody involved I know that councils throughout NSW, and probably elsewhere, use the word alternate when they mean alternative. On a visit to another country town recently I saw a road sign that pointed to a route away from the central business district. It said ‘alternate route’. A toilet block in the main park had a sign that indicated, if the toilet was closed, where people could find ‘alternate facilities’. Then the deputy principal of a local school sent a note home about the teachers’ strike and mentioned ‘alternate arrangements’. The Collins dictionary gives a good example of alternative: “We saw each other on alternate

Sunday nights.” My big Oxford (20 volumes) said alternate means coming each after one of the other kind. The Webster said ‘cause to take turns’. Macquarie said ‘a choice between two things’. Readers Digest said ‘one thing following another in turn’. Readers Digest gave an example: ‘He walked alternatively on both sides of the street’. The word alternate goes back to at least 1513. For a while the word altern was used. The first use of this word I could find came in 1447. Alternative is explained in my big dictionary. “Red stripes alternate with the blue ones. One after the other, in turns. Day and night.” The Heinemann tells it perfectly: “Alternate means in turn, or every second part of a series, whereas alternative refers to choosing between two possibilities.” So, if Tom and Bill decided to serve each second year in the top job, they would alternate

I RECENTLY had the pleasure of presenting the team of volunteers at Special Olympics Mid North Coast with a modest Community Volunteers grant of $2,954. Special Olympics Australia is the national sporting body that hosts sporting opportunities for people living with an intellectual disability, and the Mid North Coast branch looks after all the 55 athletes from Kempsey to Forster. Securing funds for local community groups is a rewarding aspect of my role which I enjoy a great deal, and I try to meet with as many of these groups as I can to hear about the work that they are doing for our communities. Sitting down and having a cuppa with Teash, Dianne, Leanne and Shaun, I heard all about the incredible work being done locally. But it wasn’t just the hours of work that each volunteer puts in which impressed me, I was also blown away by the positive impact this organisation was having for their athletes. In Port Macquarie alone, we have dozens of athletes with an intellectual disability travelling to state and national competitions. their positions, but in the meantime one of them is regarded as the alternative. Wordsmith Stephen Murray-Smith says: “An alternate prime minister is a person who shares the position of prime minister with someone else, or it’s now my turn basis. An alternative prime minister is somebody waiting for the chance to displace the present prime minister.” I admit that words are changing in meaning I saw a heading in another newspaper recently that talked about ‘non-fatal drownings’. The story also talked about ‘non-fatal drownings’. I looked up my big dictionary. It described drowning as ‘to suffer death by submersion in water’ or ‘perishing by suffocation in water’. It also talked about sending a ship to the bottom. Drown appeared in texts in the 13th century with the meaning of suffocating in water or other liquid. Collins says a person died because ‘they have gone under water and cannot breathe’. Macquarie says the word means ‘to suffocate a person by immersion in water’. Webster says ‘to deprive of life by immersion in water, or other fluid.’ Webster adds to be drunk. lauriebarber.com; lbword@midcost.com.au.

Slice of wisdom from Grandma
It’s so great to “really learn not
only a new skill set, but also gain some wisdom, and they’ve certainly got that
“
By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC LOCAL grandmas are sharing their skills and wisdom. A new event at the Sunset Gallery in Port Macquarie is seeing craft mentoring by grandmas, nonnas, and nannas. “This is to try and help people like myself or the younger generation to learn a new skill,” said Cherie Morton, Creative Practitioner at the Sunset Gallery. “It really is for people to help themselves, help the environment, and their bank accounts. And it’s so cool to meet and make connections with another generation.” These grandmas are also sharing a little more than sewing on a button. “Grandmas are a wealth of knowledge and I think that generation sometimes doesn’t get enough credit for the wisdom that they have,” Cherie explained. “It’s so great to really learn not only a new skill set, but also gain some wisdom, and they’ve certainly got that.” Although sewing on a button may have been as common and as easy as making a cup of tea back in the day, today’s generation seems to be
lacking. “For us we may start sewing because it’s ‘on trend’ or we want to get behind less waste, but these grandmas have been doing it forever, it’s actually our generation that’s not been doing it,” Cherie said. “They’ve been recycling and upcycling clothes forever. “When I was young, I went to a country school. A local lady taught us sewing, the very

basics, and in high school you chose it as a subject but that was it. Otherwise you just don’t get taught it in everyday schooling.” The group had their first meeting a fortnight ago, which included five mentors. “They were all really keen, and two of them are even members of the Country Women’s Association, so they have a really great skill set to share,” said Cherie.
“They also want to teach us how to make fidget muffs, which are for people with dementia. They keep your hands warm, but there will also be little things tied on them that are familiar to them and gives them comfort. It might be buttons or small keepsakes, anything that might trigger a memory.” These classes are completely free and are open to anyone. “It really is just something that we want to do as a community thing, because it takes time for me to do it, I don’t get paid for it, so it’s really just about connecting and learning these skills, one for those that are learning to benefit, but also I think its really special for those grandmas to have someone to share that skill with as well,” said Cherie. “We are hoping to get young mums or perhaps people who are retired, or anyone who never had a chance or time to learn some of these things.” Free Craft Mentoring with Grandmas takes place on almost every second Friday at the Sunset Gallery. The next class is on September 8 from 10am till 12pm at the Sunset Gallery, 11 Murray Street, Port Macquarie. For more information visit the Sunset Gallery at http://www.sunsetgallery.com.au or call (02) 6583 4100 or visit their Facebook page for craft supplies needed for the latest class at https://www.facebook.com/sunsetgallery. lounge/

Tragically all four species are now on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Since 1770, all four species have declined dramatically in numbers, mainly because of habitat loss or change across Australia, and introduced predators such as foxes and cats. At Billabong Zoo you can see up-close two of these remarkable Australian carnivorous marsupials: Eastern Quolls and Spotted-tail Quolls. Be sure to visit the Zoo on Sunday and find out much more. Kids can also enjoy a bouncy castle, face painting and colouring in competitions. Plus a free raffle and much more at our annual Quoll Conservation PORT MACQUARIE, NSW Awareness Day. First mates Paul Bonnice (left) and Bob Ecclestone assisting Captain Roger Risk and his wife Kerryn launch their cute houseboat River Daze in the Macleay River recently
Roger’s pride is off and floating By SUE PATERICK PIRATES and buxom wenches were gathered on the Macleay River’s grassy banks recently to launch the good ship River Daze. After christening her with sparkling cider, River Daze slipped into a calm river that reflected clear blue skies. It took builder, Roger Risk, almost three years to build this cute little houseboat with a lot of help from his friends Paul Bonnice and Bob Ecclestone. “It’s never finished but it’s floatable,” Roger said. When he said they contemplated calling the boat Bunnings Isle 63, his band of merry friends cracked up laughing. They all seemed as excited as he was to be at the launch and couldn’t wait to see if she actually floated. Made from marine ply and fibre glass, River Daze is six metres long and has a kitchen, toilet and a lounge area that converts into a double bed. There is even a small balcony out the back so Roger and his wife, Kerryn, can throw in a line or
just sit and watch the river flow past. Given the boat’s size it is easily pulled on a trailer and can be taken anywhere, so Roger and Kerryn plan to spend their retirement happily exploring Australia’s river systems. A handy fellow, Roger had already built a motor home but always wanted to build a boat. Besides, he didn’t play golf or tennis and just wanted something to do. “He saw the plans for the houseboat on the internet,” said Kerryn. “A man in Canada had built one and called it Diane Rose, which is Roger’s sister’s name so we thought it was a sign. “Plus, we feel in love with the boat’s design.” When asked how it was living with a man building a boat Kerryn admitted it was very peaceful. “He was always out of the house,” she said, and chuckled. Roger’s advice to anyone wanting to build their own boat was ‘DON’T!’ After another bout of laughter, he confessed that building a boat was a very enjoyable thing to do.

• From Page 1 The Council’s yet-to-be-launched campaign ‘Live, Work, Invest in Port Macquarie’ will be aimed at driving jobs growth, rather than simply encouraging relocation, as the region has little trouble attracting new people. “The funding will support a project that builds upon recent Council investment attraction efforts such as participation in National Manufacturing Week and our Shape of the Future Investment Prospectus,” Mr Sharp said. “Specifically, it will focus on developing and delivering digital content which tells the stories of locals and inspires others to consider the Port Macquarie-Hastings region.” Content is currently being developed for the videos which will deliver snapshots online via social media and search engine markets in Sydney, the Central Coast and Hunter region with council’s focus being on those who want to do business and invest in the region. “Our region is experiencing strong economic conditions and offers an abundance of opportunity for those looking to invest, do business here or enjoy the lifestyle and continue to service a job or clients in a metropolitan area,” Mr Sharp said. Deputy Premier and Minister for Regional NSW John Barilaro said there has never been a better time for young families to move to regional and rural areas, with new funding for major infrastructure and upgrades to community facilities. “Regional NSW is full of opportunities, whether it is getting a foot in the door to buy your first house or if you are a skilled worker looking for a better quality of life,” he said. Australian Bureau of Statistics data shows the number of jobs in regional NSW jumped by 64,700 in the 21 months to January 2017. “Regional NSW accounted for more than 38 per cent of all new jobs across the state,” Mr Barilaro said. “Through the $1.3 billion Regional Growth Fund we’ll see record investment in projects that will turbocharge regional economies. “With record investment in regional roads, schools, hospitals and telecommunications there has never been a better time to move to regional NSW.”

Council to improve local facilities By Port Macquarie Hastings Council Mayor PETA PINSON
An early start to fire season
“The message for the community is to maintain situational awareness of the current fire conditions and undertake the appropriate preparative measures to their assets and properties,” he said. To check out where bush fires are in your area go to www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/fireinformation/fires-near-me or download the app. On a 47 degree summer day earlier this year my husband and I had to evacuate our own home on 40 hectares of bush, as a large bushfire scorched Dondingalong. Others were forced to do the same when fires also erupted in other areas of the Mid North Coast. My message to all landholders is don’t burn off because the current bush fire conditions are deadly and dangerous. Visit www.rfs.nsw.gov. au this fire season to prepare, act and survive.
By SUE PATERICK
WITH six large fires burning in mostly inaccessible terrain 30 to 50 kilometres west of Kempsey last week, the bush fire season has started early. Of the six fires burning from Toorumbee in the south to Bellbrook in the north, four were under control and two were still being controlled at the time of writing this story. At times the smoke from these fires blanketed areas of the Macleay Valley. According to Superintendent Lachlann Ison, Zone Manager of the Lower North Coast Rural Fire Service, a lack of decent rain and the persisting westerly wind pattern were continuing to dry out the local area and was making firefighting activities very difficult.
COASTAL Walk Master Plan: We’re so lucky to live in such a beautiful part of the world and have some of the best natural attractions right on our doorstep. Council is committed to improving our region’s facilities, parks and walking trails for locals and visitors, and last week resolved to place the draft Coastal Walk Master Plan on public exhibition. The master plan has been developed as a result of the fantastic feedback on what you’d like to see, this is now a great opportunity for our community to ‘have your say’ on the long term plans for our iconic walking trail. Proposed upgrades to the walk include the widening and repaving of footpaths, implementation of new signage, repairs to steps and guard rails and improvements to facilities such as public toilets, parking and picnic spots. Council encourages our community to visit our website during the exhibition period to ‘have your say’ on the proposed upgrades to the
Port Macquarie Coastal Walk. For more info visit pmhc.nsw.gov.au or call Council on 6581 8111. Foreshore Trail Opening: Last week the Queens Lake Foreshore Trail in Laurieton was officially opened to the public. Council contributed $100,000 to the project which helped to support the Creek to Creek volunteer group and a team of ‘Work for the Dole’ participants who assisted in completing the construction of the trail. A new all-weather boardwalk, which extends 150 metres, will bridge the area between the Queens Lake Retirement Village and Henry Kendall Reserve, whilst also providing an observation deck, wheel chair accessible paths and seating. Council are delighted to support and offer financial assistance to the Creek to Creek project and would like to thank the volunteers and local residents who helped bring the project to life andachieve a wonderful outcome for the local community. For more information on our regions parks, reserves and walking trails visit: pmhc.nsw.gov.au/walking-trails.
Secure future for Camden Haven Surf Club PORT Macquarie-Hastings Council in partnership with Crown Land have entered into a 20-year licence agreement with the Camden Haven Surf Life Saving Club Management Committee. This will ensure the continued operation of the Camden Haven Surf Club, and is an important milestone in ensuring the viability and growth of the club. Camden Haven Surf Life Saving Club President, Michelle Garvan said the licence provides surety in knowing that the Club can continue to provide their life saving programs to the community. “We are a small club with dedicated volunteers who love what they do. We just want
to continue to improve our club and give back to the Camden Haven community who have been so supportive,” Ms Garvan said. Council Director Matt Rogers noted: “Our local volunteer surf lifesaving clubs help provide a vital service to our community in keeping our beaches safe, and Council is pleased to be able to have worked with the Club to develop a mutually beneficial arrangement.” As part of the licence arrangement, the kiosk at North Haven Beach will be leased out to an experienced food vendor, freeing up the CHSLSC committee to run the club. In preparation for the upcoming lifesaving season, the surf club building has been undergoing some minor renovations.

The charity was formed in October, 2008, as an initiative of the 4Life Ministries church. It aims to provide a degree of relief from the effects of poverty, as well as important life skills to allow people in need to cope with the pressures of everyday routine. 4Life Care & Training is firmly established as a Donation Gift Recipient charitable not-forprofit organisation. From humble beginnings at the home of Administrative Officer Jan Eldridge, it has grown to the extent that it operates two op shops (in Port Macquarie and Kempsey). The op shops at Bay 11, 10 Bellbowrie Street, Port Macquarie; and Shop 4 5-7 Clyde Street Kempsey offer groceries (including fruit and veg from its own community garden), as well as an array of clothes, household appliances and items, books and furniture. 4Life Care & Training also makes up food parcels for clients (with a delivery service and on-line ordering available). It collects fresh food from several of the area’s supermarkets, and purchases packaged food items and cleaning and hygiene products that help to make up the food parcels. The charity runs courses in skills such as cooking, self-esteem and stress management
to enable participants to gain invaluable experience in dealing with the pressures of living on a shoestring budget. For more information on 4Life Care & Training call Jan Eldridge on 6584 2951 www. care.4life.org.au.
REDISCOVER, recreate, revive, reuse, restore, reinvigorate, repurpose, relove - these are the inspirations for many who respond to the silent beckoning of the items within as they approach the doors of their favourite recycled goods store. The inspiration and treasures to discover at an ‘Op Shop’ or recycled goods outlet, create an experience within itself, and is a favourite pastime of many. Often we have our favourite colours or items that we search for, igniting a sense of pride or excitement when we locate them, and at bargain prices take them home with us to provide new life and meaning. A favourite of one customer of the Macleay Options Stores is pie dishes. Pirex will do her nicely. Using the pie dishes our clever customer purchases, she creates seasonal gifts of home cooked treats from her garden and distributes them to family and friends to brighten their day, or remind them they are loved. The empty dishes may take 6 months to be returned, but at bargain prices, it’s an affordable way to feed and nurture many a soul. One delighted lady recently proudly announced to the customer service staff in-store the item she was purchasing that day she had been searching many years for and hadn’t been able to find anywhere else in Australia as she travelled around in her caravan, and ‘she’s found it in Kempsey’. We look forward to her spreading the word as she continues on her travels with her reloved book in hand.

Finding it hard with the cost of living?
Mix and match designer labels are always a sort after-item for the fashion maestro who has an innate ability to reinvigorate a dress, top or skirt and immerse it into their corporate wardrobe as if it had always been there. Many a customer has been observed completely losing track of time as they enjoy the experience of wandering through our stores. Perhaps a vintage “Sheffield” butter knife they’ve spotted has invoked treasured memories of time spent in the kitchen of their grandparent as a child ‘helping’ make a batch of scones for family gatherings, or fine china tea cup has reminded them of the ‘special’ cabinet in a dining room, that contained heirlooms, and the replacement for that one broken piece has just been found, allowing the special status of the setting to be rediscovered. ‘Just browsing’ takes on a whole new meaning within our stores’ walls. We’ve noticed the goose bumped flesh, the twinkle in eyes, the excited special secret story smiles in the corner of mouths, and the whispers between friends as they discuss the ‘remember when’ moments the items they rediscover create. Call it ‘Op shopping’ call it repurposing, call it recycling, it has many names, just ensure you call in to the Macleay Options Stores at either 15 Smith St Kempsey, or 19 Elbow St West Kempsey and enjoy the experience of indulging yourself in a treasure hunt that brings pleasure to your soul.

Emma stands out
THE Kendall National Violin Competition has announced ‘Paper Boats’ by the young Sydney composer Emma Greenhill as the winner of the 2017 Watermark Composition. Greenhill studies at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and won the prize to the value of $2000 with her work ‘Paper Boats’ for violin and piano which will be performed as a compulsory work in the final round of the Kendall National Violin Competition on September 16 in Kendall by all four finalists of the competition. One of Sydney’s emerging composers, Emma has performed her own compositions twice at the Sydney Opera House and has been performed by a number of Sydney-based chamber groups both in Australia and internationally. In 2012 she was the recipient of the James Easton memorial composition prize, and in 2014 she was placed first in the Verge Awards’ composition prize. The Watermark composition prize is offered by the Kendall National Competition for the second time in 2017 and is generously supported by private donors to the competition. Seven entries were blind reviewed by the judging panel with ‘Paper Boats’ attracting decisive support. Sydney Conservatorium Professor Ole Bohn, a member of the judging panel and a leading international exponent of contemporary violin repertoire was impressed by Greenhill’s work for showing “very idiomatic writing for both
the violin and the piano, good musical ideas and fine musical progression”. Goetz Richter, the Artistic Director of the Kendall National Violin Competition congratulated Emma Greenhill on her achievement as the second Watermark Composition Prize winner. “The Watermark Prize is a wonderful example how the generous support of music and musicians by the community of Kendall enriches everyone’s life. This is a splendid opportunity for young composers and Emma’s work will inspire and excite all at the finals in September.” The finals of the Kendall National Violin Competition will take place on September 16 at the Kendall School of Arts. Further information, including ticket bookings can be obtained from the competition’s website www. kendallviolin.org.au

Footgolf a ‘hit’ at Frederickton By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC FOOTGOLF is catching on in the Mid North Coast. The fun and exciting sport combines football (soccer) and golf. “Around the world it’s one of the fastest growing sports,” said Tom Webb, Secretary/ Treasurer of the Veteran Golfers at Frederickton Golf Club. “It’s an interesting innovation and it’s never been in this area before. Because we are a small club and are struggling financially I thought this may be a way to get young people into our club and participating with us.” Playing the game makes a great day out for the family, for birthday parties, corporate events, and team bonding. “People love it,” said Mr Webb. “There are some really good players overseas and they travel internationally to play the game. “I think it’s a young person’s game, and that’s what we need for our club, to get young people involved and to bring along their supporters. It’s all new to us and we hope it works because everywhere else its been played it has taken off so hopefully we will follow on.” Even the local soccer teams are hooked. “We had an introduction day to see if people were interested and we are also going to have a gala day in September when the soccer season finishes,” Mr Webb said. “We’ve spoken to

Above and right: Some of the Footgolf action at Frederickton Golf Club most of the soccer clubs in the area and they are all very keen to get involved because it will be their off-season and something for their players to play and keep sharp.” The object of FootGolf is to complete a round of 9 or 18 holes in the fewest possible number of kicks. It can be a fast-paced game, taking only 45 minutes to play 9 holes. Each hole is rated with a number (par), which indicates the possible number of kicks a scratch Footgolfer would need for getting the ball in the hole. “You’ll have a par, and there’s a 53cm
diameter hole to fit the soccer ball in it with a flag there so the player can aim for,” explained Mr Webb. “Like golf you play individually and we will eventually have prizes and handicaps just like golf. You score, you add up the points like golf at the end of the nine or eighteen holes and the one with the lowest score wins.” And for the golfers out there, don’t worry, it won’t affect the golf greens. “It’s adjacent to the green, and the footgolfers can’t wear football boots because we don’t want to be upsetting the golfers,” said Mr Webb.

Couple of twists still to go JUST two rounds to go and you sense that there are still twists left in this NRL season tale. Who would have predicted the Sea Eagles to be on shaky finals ground, losing to the Bulldogs in a major upset. They were the mid-season highlight and bound for a possible date on GF day. The tide can turn so quickly. Eels and Panthers fans will be celebrating their teams’ change of fortune in the run into the finals. However both sides would pay to take heed of the ‘Manly lesson’. With the finals in sight, it would also pay for premiership forecasters to step back and take a breath. As Your Local Independent has preached in recent weeks most upsets aren’t really that surprising when analysed. The Dogs have been in poor form recently, however still boast a top roster. While the Sea Eagles have faltered in recent weeks. This weekend don’t be shocked if there are another couple of ‘upsets’. As teams approach
the money end of the season strange things can happen. The extra pressure of having to win can be the straw that breaks a player’s mindset. Also, sides such as the Storm may just need a break mentally before the finals series. The thing about this competition is nobody can afford to take a minute’s rest. OK, where are the winners: Broncos v Eels (Thursday, August 24, 7.50pm, Suncorp Stadium, Brisbane): What a way to start the weekend. Both these sides will still be bristling from their recent spiteful clash, which went the Eels’ way. Parra are finishing with a blast and the jury is out on Brisbane. They are a tough, well-drilled side. But are they capable of lifting to another gear. The decider here is the venue. • Your Local Independent tips: Broncos Raiders v Knights (Friday, August 25, 6pm, GIO Stadium, Canberra): A dead rubber. The Raiders are seething after their loss to the Panthers last weekend. While the Knights will

• Your Local Independent tips: Titans Storm v Rabbitohs (Saturday, August 26, 5.30pm, AAMI Park, Melbourne): There is just the sniff of a massive upset here. The Rabbits are finishing the season with pride. They will need more than that against the Storm. They will need a lot of luck and for the Storm to take just a small break mentally. It’s a possibility. Away maybe. But not at home. • Your Local Independent tips: Storm Sharks v Roosters (Saturday, August 26, 7.30pm, Southern Cross Group Stadium, Sydney): Another bottler. Both teams coming off a win. It really is a toss of the coin and an indicator of who is the real deal coming into the 2017 finals. You get the feeling the Sharks are back in the mind-frame that brought them glory last year. • Your Local Independent tips: Sharks Warriors v Sea Eagles (Sunday, August 27, 2pm, Mt Smart Stadium, Auckland): The Sea Eagles must win and the Warriors, although at home, are just ordinary. Manly have planned a special pre-game camp to get players back on track. Even below par, they will be good enough here. 24th – 27th August 2017 • Your Local Independent tips: Sea Eagles Thursday 24th August, 7.50pm, Suncorp Stadium Broncos vs Eels Panthers v Dragons (Sunday, Friday 25th August, 6pm, GIO Stadium August 27, 4pm, Pepper Stadium, Raiders vs Knights Penrith): Wow, another big one. Friday 25th August, 7.50pm, Campbelltown Stadium Penrith have climbed to sixth and the Wests Tigers vs Cowboys Dragons are now hanging on by the Saturday 26th August, 3pm, Cbus Super Stadium fingernails. YLI tips an upset here. Titans vs Bulldogs Penrith spent a lot of emotion in their Saturday 26th August, 5.30pm, AAMI Park Storm vs Rabbitohs win over Canberra last weekend. Saturday 26th August, 7.30pm, Southern Cross Group Dragons will throw everything at them. Stadium Panthers are still to convince fans they Sharks vs Roosters are genuine contenders for the major Sunday 27th August, 2pm, Mt Smart Stadium trophy. Warriors vs Sea Eagles • Your Local Independent tips: Sunday 27th August, 4pm, Pepper Stadium Dragons Panthers vs Dragons
be keen to continue some late season good form. Newcastle have been able to win in recent weeks despite not being in finals contention. Something that will be new to Canberra. Upset! • Your Local Independent tips: Knights Tigers v Cowboys (Friday, August 25, 7.50pm, Campbelltown Stadium, Sydney): Potential for another ‘upset’ here. The Tigers upset Manly two weeks ago then narrowly went down to the Roosters last weekend. The Cowboys are a spent force. Injury-wise they can’t take a trick. They must win to stay in the eight. But sometimes the body just says, ‘Enough’! • Your Local Independent tips: Tigers Titans v Bulldogs (Saturday, August 26, 3pm, Cbus Super Stadium, Gold Coast): Sack the coach and your team wins the very next game. It happens a lot. Titans’ players know they owe their fans plenty. They can start repaying that belief by winning this weekend. As the Dogs showed last weekend, they still have plenty of bite.
