Wayne’s journey
Macleay Valley local to share cancer story
By SUE PATERICK
The Macleay Valley’s Wayne Perks is a cancer survivor who is willing to share his story.
CANCER survivor, Wayne Perks, wants to share his journey of diagnosis, treatment and recovery with others. Wayne began his journey about three years ago when diagnosed with advanced Multiple Myeloma, an incurable bone marrow cancer. “I’ve put together a mass of anti-cancer information that I’ve developed since being diagnosed,” he said. Wayne followed some treatments prescribed by leading Australian and American doctors, but also undertook a regime using natural and complimentary methods. These natural methods were based on diet, supplements, meditation, imagery and hypnotherapy, and were based on Dr Ian Gawler’s methodology. Dr Gawler is himself a 31-year survivor of a terminal illness. His Gawler Cancer Foundation and Yarra Valley Living Centre in Victoria has a mission to improve the recovery outcomes and quality

of life for people affected by cancer or multiple sclerosis. It also assists those looking to create a greater sense of health and vitality in their lives, and uses a holistic approach that incorporates lifestylefocused cancer retreat programs, multiple sclerosis retreat programs and general wellbeing retreats programs. When he was diagnosed, Wayne had six tumours throughout his body and several hot spots. One was at the base of his skull and he was given a very limited time of survival. In fact, his doctors said their treatment would only buy him time not cure him. Upon receiving this news Wayne felt emotionally destroyed. “Any sense of security I had in my life was ripped away,” he said. “I was initially very angry and searched myself for what I had done wrong to deserve this sentence.” He wondered how a super fit man capable of doing four 200-kilometre marathons could get reduced to this. • Continued Page 3

Mid North Coast artist Robyn Jackson will be displaying some of her beautiful artworks at the Sunset Gallery in Port Macquarie next month
Robyn’s daily life is revealed on canvas By SUE PATERICK FOR over 40 years Mid North Coast artist, Robyn Jackson, has been creating stunning artworks, taking her inspiration from the Australian bush and beach, especially the local region. Next month Robyn will showcase her work and perform a few demonstrations at the Sunset Gallery in Murray Street, Port Macquarie. This will be her fifth solo exhibition of original paintings and is entitled The Life of an Artist. The exhibition runs for two weeks from the June 2 to 18 and will be open daily from 9.30am to 4pm Monday to Friday and from 10am to 2pm Saturday. “Painting is like breathing to me and the theme of my exhibition explores my life as an artist,” Robyn said. She began dabbling with art when living at Wagga and learnt batik - the art of decorating cloth using wax and dye - at school. Robyn then taught herself silk painting and used these methods to teach textiles at high school.
“I became obsessed with dye and silk,” she said. Robyn now paints fulltime in her home gallery at Crescent Head, surrounded by the Macleay Valley’s natural beauty. From this bush retreat she records her everyday life through art. “My art diary enables me to cobble together my thoughts on my art practice,” Robyn added. “I need to document the experiences around me through my connection with the landscape and what inspires me.” Robyn’s greatest inspiration is the beach. “It’s in my blood, it’s my solace, my joy, my meditation and my direction,” she said. Another source of inspiration is her garden, which Robyn says is a continuing source of delight. She also takes inspiration from her travels throughout Australia. “I am drawn to the lines and colours around me until they become a part of me and my dreaming,” she said. “My body of work explores my connection
with the landscape, both locally and from our travels.” Robyn’s work features brilliant colours on both silk and canvas and a number of artworks show her connections with Port Macquarie. Naturally her favourite medium is painting on silk. “I usually start with a photo that has beautiful lines and design and then the colours flow with a story of their own,” she explained. “Many of my works use vibrant dyes on silk because these mediums make my heart sing.” Robyn will be at the Sunset Gallery every day during her exhibition from 10am to 3pm so you can meet her and have a chat. She also plans to demonstrate painting on silk and will also run workshops after the event. Her work is displayed at her home gallery, which can be visited by appointment and on her website www.robynjacksonartist.com For more information contact Robyn on email: robbojacko@hotmail.com or phone 0265660182 or 0488605819.
• From Page 1 This anger led him to question the doctors’ belief he was going to die and set him on a new research path into alternative medicine. Since he began a natural therapies’ approach Wayne has had excellent results. “I got a clear PET Scan at three months,” he said. “And 18 months later my PET Scans are still showing clear.” Wayne admits his doctors don’t support or show much interest in natural therapies or integrative medicine that he says is critical to repairing a chemo-effected body. “I don’t know exactly what part of the natural therapies worked best, whether it was a combination of it all or just one thing,” Wayne explained. “And I stress that what worked for me may not work for others, but I am happy to share my journey in the hope it will deliver similar results.” Wayne, who lives in the Macleay Valley, said quite a few locals were coming him to find out what he has done to achieve his results and some were attaining similar outcomes. His ultimate aim is to open a Cancer Centre in Kempsey called How You Can Conquer Cancer and bring in doctors, specialists, and alternative/ complimentary medicine experts. “It will be a centre that supplies the information that is not always mainstream,” Wayne said. “I want that to be my legacy.” Wayne will be holding a free seminar at the Port Panthers Function Room this Sunday, May 27. The event will run for three hours from 6pm until 9pm. Bookings to attend Wayne’s seminar How You Can Conquer Cancer and Chronic Metabolic Disease are essential and by text only. Just send your name and number of seats you would like to reserve to 0467 419 162. “We’ll discuss how cancer works and what foods, substances and fluids can create an anticancer environment in our bodies,” Wayne added. “We’ll also discuss radiation, chemotherapy, medical experiences and so much more.”

Thursday 24 May, 2018 I HONESTLY don’t know where to start this week! I’m not lost for words, I’m just trying to articulate what I want to say, without offending the easily offended – it’s not going to be easy, so wish me luck. It was a big week in both the PMHC and KSC Council meetings held last week and I have to say, both meetings shed some light on the calibre and integrity of our elected councillors, or lack thereof. First stop. The KSC meeting on Tuesday May 15. Last year I wrote about how progressive the Kempsey Council has become and how I thought Kempsey may finally shake off the ‘redneck country hick’ type of label that’s been associated with the place since I can remember. I’m sorry Kempsey, that’s not likely to happen too soon if you allow the serial agitators to keep sabotaging your chances of progress every step of the way. Cr Leo Hauville, put forward a motion of ‘no confidence’ in Mayor Liz Campbell, which was seconded by Cr Dean Saul. The ‘no confidence’ motion was foreshadowed by another motion from Cr Sue McGinn and long story short, the ‘no confidence’ motion was voted against 6-2 with Cr Bruce Morris abstaining from the vote. You might be reading this and thinking, ‘Who cares?’ If you live in the KSC footprint – you should care! Here’s a couple of reasons why. First and foremost, Mayor, Liz Campbell has won the past two council elections by popular vote, the last result being an overwhelming 64.68% of the community voting her in to the position of Mayor – obviously the majority are more than confident with their choice – however,
From the Heart... Sandy Mackenzie the squeaky wheels in the community (which includes some councillors in the ranks) continue to undermine the choices of the community with this type of toxic behaviour. Secondly, you can’t oust a popularly voted Mayor with a no confidence vote! I find it incredible that the finger pointers, obviously have a complete misunderstanding of, or are flagrantly ignoring the rules. That should be a major concern to ratepayers right there. I understand there are always going to be the dissenters and agitators and we need to see/hear both sides, so any decisions made by KSC are based on the best outcome for the community as a whole. What I can’t get my head around, at all, is why anyone would stage such a futile, time wasting, money wasting stunt? I’ve dissected this situation over and over again. I’ve read all the information I can find, which reveals no logical explanation for a motion of no confidence. All I can come up with is – this had to have been a blatant personal attack! Sadly, this is not the first time such an attack has occurred on my watch. I have reams of unfounded, petty accusations on file – about both councils. Ironically, 99% of them from the same handful of people who dwell in the minority camp in both shires who obviously have way too much time
on their hands and have some serious issues with change and progress. All I can add? I hope the finger pointers have cleaned up all the skeletons in their closet before the next election because as we know ‘karma’ has a funny way of coming back to bite you. Which leads me onto the PMHC meeting last Wednesday. Following on from the April 18 win (6/1 vote) to support the push for funding (from state government, via Leslie Williams) for a feasibility study for a tidal pool in Port Macquarie – the community received a devasting blow at the May 16 council meeting. Despite the evidence of over 18,000 signatures in support of a tidal pool, Cr Turner has done a complete 360 and decided on our behalf, the ratepayers of the PMHC, that a tidal pool is not a priority. He obviously spent the last month convincing his colleagues this was the case as 6/3 (three councillors also changed their vote from last month) helped him get the alteration to last month’s motion carried through – basically they have added a note: 3. Note that an ocean tidal pool in Port Macquarie is not a priority for council. (For: Cusato, Dixon, Hawkins, Intemann, Levido and Turner). Disappointing as this situation is for the whole community. It’s also very enlightening. Here’s a couple of reasons why. In the last council by-election when Cr Turner was running for the position of mayor, he was quoted in local media saying: “I’m delighted to see our local MP Leslie Williams’ support for a local ocean pool, and the state government’s allocation of $50,000 to Ballina’s pool committee for a feasibility study into a pool there. As mayor, making sure Port gets the same consideration is one of my commitments for my first 100 days.”

Thumbs Up TO Betty from Bonny Hills. My husband and I were having a coffee at Settlement City on Thursday, May 10, not feeling too good as we were expecting some bad news later that day. A lady sitting nearby started talking to us. It was Betty. She was the most lovely, delightful lady. She cheered us up and had us smiling and laughing. She said she was turning 93 in a few days. As it turned out our news wasn’t so bad after all. Thank you, Betty.

Mmmm, very interesting turn of events. Less than 12-months down the track and we’ve done a complete back-flip! Not just Cr Turner, but Crs Hawkins, Intemann and Levido, who have also had a complete change of heart? Wow! It really highlights how much of the decision-making process for some of the councillors seems to be based on personal agendas and opinion, rather than on anecdotal evidence or feedback from supposed community engagement. Hell, let’s forget the 18,000+ ratepayers that have signed a petition calling for a tidal pool. It’s not on our agenda, we can join forces and block it. I know the community is ropeable. I deal with the phone calls and correspondence of outrage – they’re not happy campers for a variety of reasons. Most commonly, locals just want a safe place to swim in the ocean; a place they can take their children or the more senior members of the family who cannot handle swimming in the surf. There are so many health and safety benefits from swimming in the sea, for all ages but especially for the elderly and incapacitated who make up a large part of our local demographic. Why on earth would anyone who really had the community’s best interests at heart, block the one channel of support required to get this much-loved and wanted community initiative off the ground? Just why? If the community were expecting Council to fund it – the ratepayers pay the bills, so it is ultimately the community’s decision what their rates are spent on.

Vinyl vibe booming back VINYL will be making a comeback at Port Macquarie’s first ever Record Fair. According to organiser Travis Fredericks the Port Macquarie Record Fair, in July, is the perfect place to start a vinyl record collection. “There’s a world-wide movement that has started to ignite again around records,” said Travis, owner of Dark Alley Collectables Record Shop in Wauchope. “The sound is why I prefer records over mp3, CDs, or cassettes. “Vinyl is all I listen to except when I am in my car. On your playlist on your phone you’ll have all these great artists and you don’t know who they are. You never see any pictures of them, but with records, you get the lyrics, the photos and posters, and the artwork behind the album as well. It’s also nice to have something tangible that you can hold.” Travis says despite new technology, a lot of people are going back to vinyl. “I got invited as a vendor up to Bellingen for their record fair and I was blown away by how many people were there,” said Travis. “It was like a Myer Boxing Day sale. People were pushing the doors before it was even open and you couldn’t even move in there because there were so many people going frantic. I had to restock massively after that because they just cleaned me out. “The fair we are having in Port Macquarie has already generated some interest via phone calls, messages, and social media traffic. I kind of underestimated how many people are excited about and listening to vinyl.” Vinyl collectors and music lovers will be able to get their hands on anything from alternative, punk, metal, rockabilly, blues, jazz, country, reggae, club, hip hop, and much more. “Part of the joy for me having a record shop is seeing what people pick,” Travis said. “There’s a fairly big movement of young
Travis Fredericks in his Dark Alley Collectables Record Shop in Wauchope people who are buying records too. There are these two sisters who are 15 and 16 and they come in and buy Frank Sinatra albums, Jimmy Hendrix, Pink Floyd, and Led Zeppelin. Any artist that you can think of that’s a mainstream band you will be able to get on vinyl.” Travis says the aim of the fair is to feed the local interest for vinyl records. “We wanted to keep the event fairly local because we wanted to generate some interest in records in the local area,” Travis explains. “We’ve got some local vendors coming, as well as a guy from Bellingen and a Sydney vendor also.” Although the introduction of modern
turntables has made it easier than ever to play vinyl, many vinyl enthusiasts are opting for vintage systems. “People are really interested in getting me to piece together vintage systems,” Travis said. “I’ve got a modern turntable and vintage ones as well, one from the 1960s, and the sound that comes out of it is amazing. It’s like they are sitting in the room with you. The vintage systems were made to last too, they outlive any modern technology.” Opting for vinyl is also a great way to support artists. “Records can range from $1 up to $10,000 for one record,” Travis said. “The majority
of the sale goes to the artist. So the artists are receiving better royalties with vinyl.” Get down to Port Macquarie’s very first Record Fair on July 7 from 12-4pm at The Duck on Clarence, 72 Clarence Street, Port Macquarie. There will be food and drink available as well as live entertainment from singer songwriter Lauren Edwards and DJ Healy and the Spin Academy. The Port Macquarie Record Fair is presented by RAWR Music, Dark Alley Collectables and Hold Steady Records. For more information visit www.facebook. com/portmacquarierecordfair

Visitors on a previous Farm Gate Tour looking at the inquisitive Gromorbeef bulls
Farm gates are open By BARBARA DYER IF ever there was a good reason to get your hands dirty it is during the Hastings Landcare Farm Gate Tour long weekend in June. The annual self-drive program has been running for about seven years and gives people the chance to have a good old poke about working farms, seeing behind the scenes of 13 properties, most of which are usually closed to the public. The event takes in farms in the greater Hastings, Port Macquarie and Camden Haven region, running tours at set times over the three days of the June long weekend. Farmers and land custodians will escort visitors, chat about their production methods, conservation and the environment, allowing visitors to walk amongst farm animals, crops and in a conservation area. “Our aim is to connect people to farms and show where food comes from, as well as teaching about the environment,” says Kerry Wehlburg, who is helping co-ordinate the Hastings Landcare Farmgate Tour events. “Properties range from an oyster farm to a sheep dairy and a bushfood plantation and all are operated in an environmentally responsible manner. “The tour gives people the chance to connect with food producers, as well as to gain an understanding of how farming operations can work with the environment. “This year one of the farms will have a soil pit dug especially so that visitors can learn about the extremely important biology that happens every day beneath our feet. We have a core group of farms, but they change a little so there is always something new to see.
Family fun at Ewetopia Farm “It’s not possible to see every property as they are not all open every day, and some are open at set hours while others are open all day. “So, if there was something last year they missed out on, visitors can schedule it in this year but it’s important they do check the schedules, buy their ticket and make bookings.” Ms Wehlburg said the attendees on the tour had been a varied bunch. “We have seen people interested in regenerative agriculture, tourists wanting to explore our area, locals wanting to connect with their food and even those who are considering a lifestyle change to a small acreage and looking for ideas,” she said. She said some of farms were fantastic for young children to visit.
“This year we are partnering with the Hello Koalas Festival which runs from June 7-11 and focusses on the importance of conserving our beloved Aussie icons,” Ms Wehlburg said. “Hello Koalas Festival events over the long weekend include events at Douglas Vale Historic Homestead and Vineyard, which is also part of the 2018 Farm Gate Tour.” She said farm opening and tour times and a map overview were available with tickets available from the Port Macquarie Information Centre at the Glasshouse as well as online and in Wauchope at the Hastings Landcare Office and Ecowild Organic Shop. “The cost of $30 is per family or carload,” she said.
CHARLES Sturt University (Port Macquarie campus) student Karma Reeves has received an award-winning boost to her future career as a paramedic. The 35-year-old and her team of five from the Pacific Palms Rural Fire Service were recently awarded the prestigious Rural Fire Service Award for their brave and successful efforts assisting a man who was trapped underneath his excavator, which had overturned into a shallow dam at Charlotte Bay, south of Forster. “They made us feel very special,” said Karma, of the awards. “They flew my team and I from Port Macquarie and put us up in the Novotel in Sydney. “The ceremony was just beautiful and it was moving listening to everyone else’s stories. Not many people have a positive outcome, a lot of people experience something traumatic, like loss of life.” The team from the Pacific Palms Rural Fire Service, which is based at Smith Lake, south-east of Taree, was awarded with a Commissioner’s Certificate of Commendation, an award that recognises outstanding actions in relation to fire service duties. The man who was trapped was pinned by the excavator machine, and managed to keep his mouth and nose above the water. He’d been trapped for several hours and was struggling to maintain his position. The crew was unable to extract the victim, so instead they set up pumps to try and reduce the dam water level to provide relief for the victim and support the rescue effort. “It was a massive team effort that day where the police, the paramedics, the Royal Fire Service, and Fire Rescue NSW, did everything they could to help in any way,” explains Karma. “I met my crew on the scene and we joined up with Forster Fire Rescue helping them take all their rescue equipment down to the dam as they had to park up on a hill. It took 40 minutes to rescue him. “I have seen the person we rescued since the incident and he has some back problems but he is doing good. He’s happy, healthy, alive, and with his family. He is a very lucky and happy man.” Karma is currently in her second year of university studying a Bachelor of Clinical Practice in Paramedics. She has been a member of the Royal Fire Service for two years and says volunteering there has given her exposure into what it will be like working as a paramedic. “The Rural Fire Service has given me the experience of communicating with a patient when they are under emotional stress,” said Karma. “It has also given me the exposure too, because obviously we are going to be going to a lot of traumatic situations and scenes, and you can never predict the things you are going to see.” Volunteering has always been a huge part of Karma’s life. “Growing up I’ve always been in surf life saving,” Karma said.
FROM THE MAYOR A weekly conversation with Mayor Peta Pinson We’re so lucky to live in a community that offers such a range of opportunities to get out and about, connect with family and friends, enjoy our great weather and take advantage of living in the best place in Australia. There really is something for everyone, whether you enjoy food and wine festivals, sporting events or music and cultural activities we are definitely spoilt for choice. Our combination of beautiful beaches, pristine hinterland and a vibrant community atmosphere provide the perfect backdrop for locally grown, community and major events to take place. This month, Council awarded funds to a number of unique events that are locally grown, and that are hoping to build into permanent fixtures on our local calendar. These
events were the Digital Technology Expo, Beach to Brother Marathon, Elephant Trail Race, Coastal Country Music Festival and Wildwood Music Festival. These events successfully applied for funding under Council’s Event Sponsorship Program, which provides financial assistance to events that can be enjoyed by our local community, will encourage people to visit and stay in our region, and that have the potential to provide a significant local economic boost. The program has been providing funds to locally grown events since 2015, with more than 20 events receiving $141,000 in sponsorship funding to give them a kick along. One of the events which is supported by the Event Sponsorship Program is Slice of Haven, which has been a huge hit since it first came to life in 2008. The Laurieton foreshore will come alive this Sunday to the smells, sights,
pmhc.nsw.gov.au sounds and atmosphere that only Slice of Haven can bring, and I’m really looking forward to seeing as many of our community enjoying a great day out. The festival really does highlight our great local produce, food, wine and entertainment … my mouth is watering already! Like many of our locally grown events Slice of Haven started from humble beginnings, and through hard work, great partnerships and enthusiastic volunteers it has become one of the highlights on our local event calendar. If you’ve got a great idea for an event, or community project, the next round of Council’s grants program is expected to open in August, and I encourage you to think about applying. Until then, I hope to see you as we enjoy Slice of Haven on Sunday. Peta.

A Ripper way to beach safety
From left: Surf Life Saving Mid North Coast Branch President, Rod McDonagh, Nexba co-founder Drew Bilbe and Westpac Little Ripper’s Jason Young at the recent presentation of a Westpac Little Ripper Lifesaver drone for the Port Macquarie Region
By BARBARA DYER
FOLLOWING a season which saw three lives lost in surf at local beaches, Port Macquarie surf lifesavers have welcomed hi-tech help from above. It was sweet news for Surf Life Saving Mid North Coast Branch when Naturally Sugar Free pioneers Nexba funded a Westpac Little Ripper Lifesaver drone for the Port Macquarie Region. Westpac Little Ripper Lifesaver drones can rapidly identify and respond to incidents with abilities tailored for search, rescue and lifesaving pod drops. Able to sweep the water and with ‘eye in the sky’ capabilities to see below the water, the $50,000 drone will drop its payload of two inflatable pods to swimmers in trouble, buying rescue crews extra time, invaluable in rougher conditions. They can also be used for shark spotting. Six volunteer surf life savers from the area will be trained as remote pilots at the Westpac Little Ripper UAV academy based in Port Macquarie. Surf Life Saving Mid North Coast Branch President, Rod McDonagh said the Westpac Little Ripper drone would be a valuable resource to Surf Life Saving Mid North Coast volunteer lifesavers to enhance their ability to carry out patrols, identify marine hazards, and assist with search and rescue along almost 200km of coastline in the region. “This is a great opportunity for our members to improve their skills and provides us with the capability to be adaptable to emergency situations with cutting edge technology,” said Mr McDonagh at the official handover last weekend. “The mid north coast area unfortunately responded to a number of critical incidents last season and these drones can assist greatly in search and rescue operations.” He added it would create a whole new area of interest in the lifesaving arena as well as providing surf lifesavers with career opportunities. “It will broaden the scope of our duty officers who are on call 24-7 to respond to any marine related incident,” Mr McDonagh said. “This donation is important to keep us relevant with emergency management practices and our routine management of beaches on the Mid North Coast. “I believe we have the people and resources to be leaders in this field. “Our main aim is to maintain a safe environment for the people who use the beaches and adjacent areas. “Many of our responses are out of the flags and the application of drones will allow us to respond more effectively and also provide assistance to other organisations.” Nexba is fighting to eradicate diabetes and obesity and sees their philosophy as being closely aligned with Westpac Little Ripper’s mission to save lives. Port Macquarie is the first to benefit from Nexba’s initiative of supporting local communities in Australia. Nexba co-founder Drew Bilbe said the donation was just the beginning of saving lives. “We founded Nexba in 2011 because we had a long-term vision of changing people’s lives and providing a healthy alternative to harmful, sugary soft drinks,” he said. “Bringing that ambition to our beaches, our aim is to partner for a Westpac Little Ripper drone on every beach in Australia.” Westpac’s Port Macquarie Bank Manager Daniel Gibb said: “Westpac is proud to support the Westpac Little Ripper Lifesavers in Port Macquarie.

Community L nks

Sponsored by SkillsLink Training - your community college.
Breaking the jobless cycle BREAKING the cycle of unemployment is a challenge for people of all ages. “If you don’t have experience you can’t get a start,” is what so many young and older people say when they come to the college asking for help. So providing skills training is only one part of the answer to finding work. People need opportunities to prove themselves on the job. That’s why the college has a longstanding program of work experience placements and many organisations willing to give people a start. But there is a growing need for the business and community sectors to support us in developing the potential of our youth, and restoring other vulnerable groups, such as older workers who have been made redundant by technological change and downsizing in industry. We would love to hear from you if you’re needing some extra help around the workplace. It is important that work experience placements involve real roles, not just taking advantage of having someone around to do dog’s body work. The college can help guide employers as to how best to get a win-win result from work placements with our students. There are also other places people can get experience, by volunteering and joining groups focused on special projects. And experienced people can assist in this whole field by offering to mentor those seeking work experience and placements. If you can help in any of these ways, please call in at 77 Hastings River Drive, or give us a call on 6583 7288. You will see all our programs at the website www.pmcc. edu.au

Local sports clubs, charities, men’s sheds and Scouts or Girl Guides are just some of the groups that benefit from this program. This is a very popular grants program with $330,000 to be shared across the Port Macquarie electorate. This is a great opportunity to get the support your community group needs to make real improvements where we meet, train or recreate. Applications close at 5pm on Friday, June 15, 2018. BOYS were once called wags. Older boys were also called wags. They were also called a fellow, or a chap. Sometimes they were also mischievous – or left hanging. My big dictionary calls wag a mischievous boy, or a youth, a young man, a fellow or chap. It adds that often mothers would call their baby boy a wag “as a term of endearment”. Ivor Brown in his book of words said that when Shakespearian characters called each other good wag they were not necessarily implying that the youngster was an intending comedian. Shakespeare had a go at it. For instance, In Henry 4, he said: “But I prythee sweet Wag, shall there by Gallows standing in England when thou art King”. My big dictionary says wag may have been a shortening of waghalter, but it may have originated in other ways. My big dictionary says “left hanging”. John Ayto suggests someone destined for the gallows might be a wag also, left hanging, so to speak. Craig Carver says scalawag (I am used to spelling it as scallywag) was a preindustrial Scottish farm labourer probably under the influence of wag, a witty person. John Ayto and Adrian Room suggest it may
DDL will be made available through the Service NSW app. The proposed changes mean that a driver could use their DDL, accessible on a mobile phone, for proof of identity and proof of age to gain entry into pubs and clubs as well for roadside Police checks. Since November, 2017, more than 1,400 people in Dubbo have participated in a trial of the technology, with an 83 per cent customer satisfaction rating. The DDL will provide additional levels of identity security and increased protection against identity fraud compared to the physical driver licence. Drivers who opt in will still be provided with a physical card, but not required to carry it with them. The new laws follow extensive consultation with industry stakeholders.

describe a person about to be hanged. I can’t suggest it means other than a person left hanging. Readers Digest says it means a person at the end of a rope, moving up and down and some left and right. I will leave it for others to describe how a person dies at the end of a rope. The 1811 Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue, compiled by Captain Grose, describes wag as “an arch frolicksome fellow”. The best I could come up with so far as arch is concerned was “a feminine curve”. Wikipedia says wag is an acronym used to refer to wives and girlfriends of high-profile professional athletes. When it was announced in 2007 that David Beckham would be joining the American club Los Angeles Galaxy, the Mail on Sunday referred to the “LA WAGs whose husbands earn less in ten years than Beckham in one week”.

With Dr David Gillespie Federal MP for Lyne
THE Federal Coalition Government this month delivered on a significant commitment – there are one million more Australians in work than there were when we were elected. One million more jobs means at least one million livelihoods improved. This is an excellent outcome for Australian families. Since coming into office in 2013, we have focussed on ensuring the right economic policies and market conditions to boost jobs. Thriving businesses create jobs and give Australians the opportunity to work. The Government’s role is to create the right economic conditions so that businesses of all sizes can prosper, grow and hire more Australians. Job creation does not happen by accident. Over the last five years, the Federal Liberal National Government has: • delivered personal and small and medium business tax cuts; • delivered more trade deals, meaning more exports and more jobs; • delivered record infrastructure and defence industry investment • constrained spending, with real growth now at its lowest rate in 50 years; • acted to bring down the cost of living with our energy reforms.

Over the years the wag diminished and the boy took over. Wag increasingly meant comedian, or at least one who moved from side to side or from top to bottom. I have come across at least 25 names for the letters wag. I wish I could tell you. Many dog walkers have described their businesses as wag. Some have even named their businesses as wag. Macquarie says wag means to move from side to side or up and down, or silly person Webster says wag means a frolicksome fellow or someone fitted for the rope, a joker a gossip or a fellow who is full of mischievous humour, Collins says wag is to move from side to side, such as a happy dog. Heinemann says wag means a person who teases or plays jokes. The modern version of wag is a person, of any age, who likes to tell jokes. But it can also mean one who wags school, a merry droll, to be in danger of felling, to vacillate. But so far as I am concerned it means, in modern parlance, to shake or nudge. Even if you did wag school occasionally. lauriebarber.com; lbword@midcoast.com.au

Paddle to save river SAVE Our Macleay River (SOMR) invite you to join their Paddle the Clybucca Wetlands event on Saturday May 26. Sponsored by North Coast Local Land Services (NCLLS), registration commences at 9.30am at the Clybucca floodgates and there is no registration fee. Lunch will be provided but bring your own craft and personal flotation devices. Guest speakers will include Max Osborne, from the NCLLS, and Russell Yerbury - a former beef producer from Clybucca. This event will begin at the Clybucca floodgates and will showcase the environmental issues associated with the drainage of the Collombatti-Clybucca Wetlands. To get there follow the map. Participants will explore the Clybucca Creek waterway to get an appreciation of the scale of the issues and will learn what the NCLLS are doing about trying to improve fish habitat. According to SOMR, the NCLLS are leading the development of a remediation strategy to address the causes of poor water quality emanating from Clybucca back swamp. This includes the Mayes and Doughboy Swamps that flow into the Clybucca Creek section of the Macleay Estuary. SOMR organisers stress this event will not replace the annual Paddle on the Macleay to be held in September.

Flight applications withdrawn By SUE PATERICK THE Australian International Aviation College (AIAC) last week withdrew two applications to dramatically increase flights at its pilottraining facility at Kempsey Airport. The existing development consent T6-15381 was withdrawn, as was a modification application which sought to extend the flight school’s operating hours to seven days per week flying from Monday to Friday from 7am to 10pm (Eastern Summer Time), Monday to Friday from 7am to 9pm (Eastern Standard Time), and on Saturday to Sunday from 8am to 8pm (all year). Adam Ulrick, President of the Save Kempsey Airport Action Group (SKAAG), said the AIAC’s withdrawal was a massive relief for the many Macleay Valley residents. He explained that the first DA to build an $18 million training facility at Kempsey Airport was lodged over 12 months ago. This DA was knocked back by the Northern Joint Regional Planning Panel (NJRPP) in March 2017 because of a list of community concerns. At a packed public meeting the JNRPP requested the AIAC provide it with additional information that addressed these issues. Craig Milburn, Kempsey Shire Council’s General Manager, said the AIAC gave no formal reason for the withdrawal but subsequent discussions had indicated that the lack of a stable environment and the subsequent strategies guiding operators’ expectations at the airport made it impossible to make a long-term investment. “Regardless of the operations of the AIAC, Council is committed to pursuing the development of a Fly Neighbourly Agreement (FNA) and a Noise Management Plan (NMP) in order to facilitate a balance between the community and further use of the Airport,” he added. Council is currently in negotiations with AIAC about its immediate next steps. When the AIAC’s current DA expires in mid-June it will be required to remove the

demountable buildings from the site that it used as classrooms. “The College have advised us they wish to retain their lease over the original terminal building, used for lessons, and that they still intend to utilise Kempsey Airport for training flights,” Mr Milburn said. “They may also be considering other local sites for lease as classroom space that are not associated with the airport.” However, Council has no indication from the AIAC regarding their future intentions for flights, or the volume of training flights. Mr Milburn explains that while the onground facilities at Kempsey Airport are a Council-owned asset, the airport is classified as a public aerodrome and as such there is no capacity for Council to restrict flights into or out of the airport at any time. Whereas the AIAC’s previous DA included conditions that related to the flights in order to link use of the facilities to use of airspace. Now any matters of safety, noise or flight operation are under the jurisdiction of the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) and Airservices Australia. Mr Milburn acknowledged that the Mid North Coast Regional Aviation Strategy saw a $2 million Federal Government investment to build the Airport Business Park and said Council would continue to work with AIAC and other airport-related businesses to see that tenants were in place and this investment and community asset was maximised. “The development of the Fly Neighbourly Agreement and Noise Management Plan are a
fundamental part of this future development of the airport,” he added. Mr Ulrick believed that given the extensive community outrage over the last 12 months to the prospect of industrial-scale, pilot-training operations, it was in the public interest that Council released an independent assessor’s report due to be tabled with the AIAC’s modification application at Council’s May meeting. Mr Milburn said that because the AIAC extension was withdrawn before it was tabled it did not form part of the business paper for that meeting. However, the report has been distributed to all the shire’s Councillors and members of the Kempsey Airport Reference Group for their background in the ongoing development of the FNA and NMP. Mr Ulrick said SKAAG remained committed to developing both the FNA and the NMP through the Kempsey Airport Reference Group. SKAAG also supports the development of a Kempsey Airport Master Plan, plus the Department of Planning and Environment initiative to develop a State Environment Planning Policy to ensure residents around small rural airports are protected from the encroachment of inappropriate aviation activities. “Our message remains clear,” Mr Ulrick said. “Mass pilot training is not compatible with the residential, agricultural and tourism interests in the Macleay Valley.”
Local opposition to Adani coalmine THE Oddfellows Hall in Kempsey overflowed last Friday night with 100 people keen to watch two documentaries that capture the power and passion of people taking extraordinary action to stop the Adani coalmine from going ahead in Central Queensland. The documentaries were called Galilee Basin: A Mighty Force and Guarding the Galilee. Live music set a convivial tone to the evening as people streamed in, gradually filling the hall to full capacity. Key speaker and member of Macleay Living Sustainably (MLS), Cherry Muddle, provided her own lived experiences in the Whitsundays to protect the Great Barrier Reef and explained why stopping the mine is relevant not only to protecting the Reef, but to everyone on the planet. “If this mine goes ahead, it will open up the whole Galilee Basin to coal mining and will release five billion tonnes of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere,” Miss Muddle said. “The mining and burning of coal will accelerate global warming to even more dangerous levels, by polluting our air and heating our oceans, and the impact on the local environment, ground water, and the Great Barrier Reef will be devastating.” Miss Muddle put a human face to the struggle in the far north and shared successes of the Stop Adani movement so far. “People power has delayed the Adani mine, helped secure strong laws to protect the reef and stopped Adani from receiving a public
Part of the crowd at the Kempsey film night loan of $5 billion from the Northern Australia Infrastructure Facility,” she said. Unfortunately Jeremy Buckingham from the Greens had a car accident on the way to the event, and though not injured, was unable to attend. At a Q&A session after the screenings, many wanted to know what they could do to help stop this mining from going ahead. Local Greens secretary, Arthur Bain, was in attendance and said that at the moment the Labor Party is wavering about whether to support the mine or not. “So put pressure on your local Labor MP and let them know you do not want them to
support it,” he said. “And you can also give support to the Native Title landholders, the Wangan and Jagalingou by going to their website at www. wanganjagalingou.com.au/our-fight The Macleay Living Sustainably group meet once a month at Gladstone Hall to explore ways of leading a healthier, greener more sustainable life. Wauchope Men
ONCE again this week we saw mixed results for our pennant sides. The 2’s went down to Port City at Port City 47-69 and the 5’s went down to North Haven at North Haven 52-62 with Ken Ansley’s rink the only one having success winning 21-10. The 7’s bounced back to win against Westport at home 69-47 with Paul Ireland’s rink having a great win 28-11 as did Graham Gillard’s rink, also winning comfortably 21-12. Ted Scott’s rink
was unlucky coming back to level the scores at 20-all on the penultimate end only to drop four shots on the last end. This week there was again a good turnout for our Wednesday afternoon club select triples. Due to the numbers we had two pairs games and both tasted success. Best performed winners with a handy +21 were Rex Shrubb and Jim Hopcroft while the runners up were Earl Debreceny and Alby Schroder with +16. Must be pennant season because we also had great turnout for Friday afternoon’s nominated pairs. This week we have the usual Friday afternoon nominated pairs at 1pm, single entries will also be accepted and Wednesday afternoon single entry club select triples are at 1pm. Visitors are always most welcome and encouraged to register for either or both of these galas. On Sunday morning 27 May we have the quarter finals of the major singles starting at 9am with Jeff Purdy playing Ken Ansley, Paul Harrison playing Ray Houghton, Adolf Giacovani playing Dave Carney and Adrian Samuelsson playing Tim Renshall. footytips
SOO now NRL focus THE NRL focus goes onto high beam now with State of Origin just around the corner. Teams will be selected next week with Origin 1 on Wednesday, June 6, Players whose clubs sides are towards the bottom of the ladder still have that something extra to play for. So, after another tough tipping round, let’s try to find some winners this weekend: Broncos v Eels (Thursday, May 24, 7.50pm, Suncorp Stadium, Brisbane): You would think this would be a ‘given’ for the Broncos, but it is actually a danger game for them. They climbed over top of the Roosters last weekend, but this was a very physical game that also ended up with a public spat over the Dylan Napa hit on Korbin Sims. These incidents sap mental and emotional strength out of players. The Broncos could also be almost excused for mentally switching off, considering the Eels’ woeful form. However, as the results show each weekend, upsets are just a game away. Your Local Independent tips: Eels Raiders v Sea Eagles (Friday, May 25, 6pm, GIO Stadium, Canberra): Well, what about the Sea Eagles. They jumped out of the blocks to trounce the Storm and sit just a couple of wins out of the eight. Despite a poor start to 2018, Manly showed last year – with a similar roster – that they are a quality outfit. The Raiders have the same script - quality roster, poor start, but are certainly playing better football and were not disgraced in losing to ladder leaders, the Dragons, last weekend. Your Local Independent tips: Sea
Eagles Cowboys v Storm (Friday, may 25, 7.55pm, 1300SMILES Stadium, Townsville): Wow, Origin allies, who are both coming off a loss. The Storm are in sixth spot, while the Cows are second-last. Melbourne were flat last weekend against Manly and Craig Bellamy will be working every angle to get them back winning. The Cows were unlucky at the weekend, falling to the top-four Rabbitohs. The Cows must be close. Your Local Independent tips: Cowboys Roosters v Titans (Saturday, May 26, 3pm, Central Coast Stadium, Gosford): Despite the Titans winning last weekend you would expect the Roosters to have an easy weekend (as the bookies are suggesting). However we are going for another upset here. The Titans have been patchy, but have also been staunch against the top sides. The Roosters will be aching after their clash with Brisbane and mentally will be believing they are due a ‘holiday’. Your Local Independent tips: Titans Warriors v Rabbitohs (Saturday, May 26, 5.30pm, Mt Smart Stadium, Auckland): This will be interesting – two teams who have under-performed for a few years, but are right back in the mix this season. The Warriors are currently third on the table and the Rabbitohs are fourth. Both are physical sides who also have an array of attacking options. They are also both coming off wins last weekend – the Rabbits edged out the Cowboys and the Warriors were 24-14 victors over the Eels. The Warriors are at home, which is a crucial advantage.
Sharon Griffiths
The bookies have the NZers just ahead in the market. But, go the Rabbits! Your Local Independent tips: Rabbitohs Panthers v Dragons (Saturday, May 26, 7.35pm, Panthers Stadium, Penrith): Another tough call with the second-placed Panthers at home to the front-running Dragons. If you were looking for a flaw in the Dragons it is that they have fallen to teams that are the ‘new force’ on the ladder – the Warriors and the Rabbitohs. Yet they have been too strong for traditional powerhouses. Both had good wins last weekend and both look like genuine grand final contenders. Interesting that the bookies have the Dragons as clear $1.75 to $2.10 favourites for this trip to the mountains. Will be close, but Dragons just have the edge in consistency. Your Local Independent tips: Dragons Knights v Sharks (Sunday, May 27, 2pm, McDonald Jones Stadium, Newcastle): Knights are still showing that they are there-abouts, but their loss to the Titans last weekend opened up a few queries. They are still just a win outside of the eight. The Sharkies are not so much in cruise control, but are going quietly about their business and are up in fifth place. They should be too well-oiled for the Knights. Your Local Independent tips: Sharks Wests Tigers v Bulldogs (Sunday, May 27, 4.10pm, ANZ Stadium, Sydney): Tigers need to get back on the horse after a loss to the Panthers last weekend. They have given their many fans plenty to cheer about already this year, are in eighth place

and just need to stay composed. The Bulldogs are playing good footy, but just can’t nail consistent wins. They were a converted try behind the Sharks last weekend and the bookies have them as $2.30 outsiders (Tigers $1.63) for this weekend. But we feel there will be an upset.
