By CHRISTINA PARKIN WHEN asked why he chose not to run again, ex-councillor Adam Roberts stated that, “Under the current circumstances, it’s easier for me to be more effective to speak my mind outside of Council.” As of last Thursday, when Mr Roberts retired from the Port Macquarie-Hastings Council, he feels he has a role to play in ensuring the ratepayers make informed choices for their councillors and mayor. “I’ve enjoyed representing the community and giving 110% to everything I have done, however, as a councillor, there are a lot of restrictions on you, on what you can say and do,” explains Mr Roberts. “So if you want to represent an issue on behalf of the community, you really are hamstrung on how you can approach the issue under the current regime. “If you speak up or out on an issue, there is certainly an amount of attempted bullying or intimidation or push to sweep things under the carpet, and I don’t want to continue to be part of that. “This is not a personal attack – the fundamental issues need to be talked about. “If you, as a ratepayer, are comfortable with the current regime of ensuring the books look good, rather than fixing the fundamental issues, then that is exactly what will continue to happen if the status quo remains.” During the interview with Your Local Independent, Mr Roberts stressed that his motivation for speaking out came about from his desire to be more effective in informing ratepayers; to help them cut through the current

spin to work out what the real issues are. “Without me speaking out, there are very few people able to give an alternate version on what is really going on,” he said. Mr Roberts spoke in depth regarding his concerns citing a wide array of examples – from the PCYC/Indoor Stadium issue, the delays on the Marine Rescue tower, the renewal of the General Manager’s contract, inadequate infrastructure delivery, traffic congestion on arterial roads to the shortfalls of the ‘Fit for the Future’ submission – all of which are issues, he claims, are shrouded in a lack of transparency and community consultation with some items held in closed council sessions to avoid public debate. He says, concerns for rate rises cited in the ‘Fit for the Future’ report are ostensibly linked with the under-delivery of infrastructure with a record stockpiling of council funds in investment. Councils needed to show they were sustainable in their processes or ‘fit for the future’, so they had to come up with a plan to achieve the targets set, but the issue still remains about Council’s capacity to deliver. Mr Roberts said $130m was wiped off from the infrastructure backlog by a reclassification

process so the backlog position looked better, but the independent AEC consultancy report noted that the problem would still need to be addressed in the future. “We do not need a rate rise at all when we have millions sitting in reserves,” stated Mr Roberts. “It is investment by default because it is a stockpiling of money that cannot be spent quick enough during the year and goes back to lack of delivery of infrastructure, like fixing and maintaining roads.” “Budgets for 2013/14, 2014/15 and 2015/16 were all scheduled for around $100m but repeatedly, Council has under-delivered by about 50%.” Mr Roberts claims a better strategy would be to question why Council can’t deliver full-pace, finding the skills gaps, addressing them and getting on with the delivery because while that money remains invested, it loses value and while the projects are not being delivered, the actual delivery costs will rise more than the interest those investments are earning. “The Mayor denies that there is even a problem. You can see from his comments re the previous budget where only $45m of projects

were delivered from the $103m allocated,” says Mr Roberts. “In return, the Mayor publicises instead that there has been a record delivery of projects.” Mr Roberts believes Council is only delivering to the capacity of the current organisation. Interestingly, the next capital works budget was reduced to just under $70m as a ‘regressive’ plan of being able to match capacity and capability to meet delivery expectations. “From a councillor point of view, you have to take full responsibility for holding the council staff to account for lack of delivery,” says Mr Roberts. “Council are currently failing to deliver major projects in a ‘value for money’ way. “In private enterprise, a General Manager would be sacked for a similar degree of performance of a 50% under-delivery of a project budget. I actually think Council’s General Manager is between a rock and a hard place, because there is limited action or leadership in the chamber to force change, he is hamstrung. “We can’t have a regime of a council who stockpile income then asks ratepayers and the state government for more because they can’t sort out the fundamental delivery issues. “The reality is Council has more money than it can spend at the moment, and with the current growth ahead of us, there is capacity to draw off more rates without taxing ratepayers more.” (Next edition: Failure to address traffic congestion, lack of community consultation and the collaboration issues between all three levels of government.)

Ballina offer Port tidal pool support I WRITE to you from Ballina. I have been a councillor on Ballina Shire Council for the last 8 years and feel honoured to be involved with our Ballina Ocean Pool Committee. It has come to my attention that the community of Port Macquarie is also looking to build an ocean pool which is fantastic news. Ballina’s committee is progressing through the hoops and obstacles to bring about such a wonderful project for our own community.

experience without the risk of getting caught in a rip or being dumped by a wave. I have been informed that there is a mayoral candidate, Peta Pinson, who is supporting the push for a tidal pool in Port Macquarie and offer her and the Tidal Pool for Port Macquarie committee my support and will provide them with any information I can as to how we are progressing with an ocean pool for Ballina. A tidal pool would be a major

I’ve grown up swimming in ocean pools in Sydney and Newcastle and think they are a great asset for any costal community. I believe that Ballina’s Ocean pool will be the first of a new wave of ocean pools to be built up and down the coast. With all the negative news stories about the increasing threat and fear of sharks, an ocean pool is the perfect solution. They also allow children and the elderly to have an ocean

I wish the community of Port Macquarie much success in its endeavours to bringing about an attraction which could soon be nestled in a natural environment like our coastline. What road safety! IT seems that the local MP or the Minister for Roads does not agree with the government’s policy on road safety. The situation here is becoming so that we take our life in our hands every time we turn into our driveway with cars flashing their lights and semis blowing their horns at night. We have waited more than 20 years for a ‘cottage driveway’ sign for our property on the Pacific Highway at Sapling Creek, near Heron’s Creek,

but what good is it when down the road another twenty metres is a RMS sign saying the exact opposite – it’s no wonder drivers are confused. At one stage we had one driver overtaking us on the left hand verge of the road. It’s good to see that the new Pacific Highway north of here is getting the turn lanes and local roads put in place for road safety. It seems that they are the lucky ones. It makes you think whoever is in government in situations like this whether the old saying is true ie: “It’s

Not so lucky country FOR a long time, we lived in a country that was so self-supporting other countries were jealous of the fact. We now find these items that were making other countries throughout the world envious have gradually disappeared or have been sold off - things like many of our former industries which

created thousands of jobs have now gone. In NSW, we have Mike Baird who is about to throw many thousands of workers on the scrap heap with the closing down of the greyhound industry; an industry that has been operating long before he was thought of. Sure it has its bad apples, but why is he taking the easy way out? Why doesn’t his government try to rid the industry of those responsible for giving the industry such a bad name? I AM horrified at the constant litter which is all along Ocean Drive, Lake Road and the Oxley Highway. It’s a disgrace and the council should lift their act. This must be the untidiest town on the mid north coast.

Thumbs Up A HUGE thank you to Glenda Woolston from Smart Line Mortgage Broker. After 18 months she is still taking great care of us with a home loan, extra finance and the cheapest interest rates. Well done Glenda.

Thumbs up TO the dedicated and supportive staff at Port Base Intensive Care Unit. You have the gratitude and admiration of the family and friends of a critical patient recently in your care.

THUMBS down to the 60ish-year-old male driving a dark sedan in the undercover carpark in Settlement City on Tuesday August 2 who intimidated, threatened and screamed at my 78-year-old mother and then punched her car window. Yes she made a small error in her judgement by driving down the carpark the wrong way. Yes, she realised her mistake when you were there trying to turn in. You had an opportunity to be kind and reverse back a little to allow her to get out and both be on your way. But you decided to move forward so she could not move and intimidated her with your yelling. You decided to drive up close to her window and demand she wind her window down so you could abuse her further, you decided to punch with force her window and side mirror. Anyone would be upset being attacked this way, but a fortnight before we lost our dad, her husband of 60 years. On this Tuesday mum had been to the bank to remove his name from the accounts and was feeling fragile, emotional and vulnerable. Your shameful actions have further impacted her emotionally and we, as a family, have all shed further tears as a direct result of your actions. I do hope you read this and reflect on your actions. If not maybe there will be more self- awareness in others next time they feel the need to engage in road rage. You just never know the next human being’s story and why they may have made that small error in judgement.

EXCUSE me for thinking I’ve become embroiled in the election campaign for the US President! This week it disgusts me to share that some gutless wonder, in our community, saw fit to send an anonymous letter that was, at the least, very toxic and a veiled threat! Police have been notified. The letter was concerning Mayoral Candidate Peta Pinson and the publicity she is getting from her campaign, as well as media coverage and her advertising in Your Local Independent. Newsflash! It’s an election campaign. Seriously though, there are two things that really concern me. If you have something to say, put your name to it. Don’t send vile letters, casting aspersions unless you are prepared to stand up and show your face. Your actions are those of a coward. Your Local Independent relies on advertising revenue to produce a FREE service to the community. Peta Pinson has paid for any advertising or advertorial space in the paper during her campaign. Advertising and news is our business. So is it any surprise to see campaign advertising in YLI? Stories are written to show both sides of the story. Our job is to inform people in the community. Concerned about the lack of advertising or editorial regarding other candidates? Talk to them. They have all been contacted and offered the same opportunity.

Nothing better than real Xmas joy By SUE PATERICK JUST imagining the joy a child feels when they receive a Christmas present and live in a country far less fortunate than Australia, is a precious gift for a group of caring and creative people. For the past 15 years the Ladies Fellowship Group in Frederickton have supported Operation Christmas Child, a charity that fills cherry red shoeboxes full of gifts. According to Margaret Sharland, member of the fellowship group and local coordinator of Operation Christmas Child, each box contains a hygiene pack, a school pack, toys, clothes, something special and something to love like a cuddly toy. The ladies, some from the Christian New Life Centre and others from the community, collect items throughout the year and have one big packing day in October when their menfolk come along to help out. “We also like our morning teas and gettogethers, so we have had two packing days this year,” Margaret said. Apart from baking delicious treats for morning tea, many of the women sew, knit and crochet the clothes, bags, beanies, scarves, socks and other handmade goodies that are folded neatly into each box. “Some of our group also include letters and cards in their boxes,” Margaret said. About six years ago Maureen Jefferies wrote a little note wishing the child recipient a Merry Christmas and how she hoped they liked their gift. Most of Maureen’s boxes were distributed in Fiji and she soon received a reply from some grateful and happy children. “They said how much they loved receiving their gifts,” she said. “Many wanted to be pen pals and I still get letters throughout the year.

Fromelles friendship Martial ensures Aussie heroics live on By CHRISTINA PARKIN

Martial Delebarre, OAM, Curator of the Fromelles Museum and officer of the Commonwealth War Graves at Fromelles with Jim Munday and Martial’s wife, Catherine, standing at the graves of the two Wilson brothers, Sam and Eric

Jim Munday is then bringing Martial, and wife Catherine, to Port Macquarie to meet family members of the Wilson brothers and others whose relatives fought at Fromelles Australian military history in Fromelles”. In 2008, the work began at the site and the first remains were discovered. Individual families registered the probability of relatives with the Army and provided DNA to enable identification. Living relatives of the Wilson brothers (see story Page 7) gave DNA samples and as a result, the remains of Eric and Sam were among only 96 who were able to be identified. All the remains had been recovered by September 2009 and reburied in the new cemetery in January – February 2010, some not yet identified. The dedication of the cemetery on July 19, 2010, brought together 16 relatives

THE village of Fromelles has not forgotten that bloody day in 1916. Not only is the school proudly named ‘Les Cobbers’, but the weather vane on the roof is not the traditional cockerel, but a kangaroo with a joey in the pouch. Every morning the ‘freedom’ bell is rung. Next to the bell is a plaque inscribed: “May the children of both France and Australia never forget the price of their freedom when the bell rings at the start of their school day.” Martial Delabarre OAM, is a walking encyclopaedia regarding the Battle of Fromelles. Martial began his interest as a nineyear-old walking around the battlefields of his home town, collecting artefacts he found. He is a foundation member and president of the Souvenir de la Battaille de Fromelles 19/20 Juillet 1916 and an officer of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission for many years. This involved the establishment of the first battlefield museum at Fromelles in 1990. Opened in the Town Hall, it remained a special place of pilgrimage until a new and publically funded museum opened nearby in 2014. Meanwhile, in 2001, eighty-five years after the Battle of Fromelles, the bloodiest battle that the Australian Army ever fought, a Victorian school teacher and amateur historian, Lambis Englesos, with the support of Martial Delabarre’s extensive knowledge, started the crusade to identify the mass burial site of the Australian soldiers who had fallen in the Pheasant Wood area. In 2006, Martial Delebarre was awarded an honorary Medal in the Order of Australia “for service to Australia-France relations, particularly the preservation and promotion of

of the Wilson brothers on that hot summer’s day in France. Protocol requires the remains to be re-buried in sequence of the removal of the remains from the mass burial site, irrespective of rank. The researchers were amazed when they discovered that the two brothers, Sam and Eric, had been buried side by side before their identification had been confirmed by the DNA testing. Jim Munday, a descendant of the surviving Wilson brother, Jim, attended the ceremony with his friend Tony May and on his return to Port Macquarie made a decision to have the medals and artefacts of the Wilson brothers displayed at

the Fromelles museum. Jim returned to Fromelles, and while walking through the fields of the battle site, described how Martial responded to his incredulity of the circumstances. “You know Jim, the Australians were gladiators - they were gladiators.” Jim Munday has been so impressed with Martial’s commitment to the graves and the Fromelles Museum, that he invited Martial and his wife, Catharine, to visit Australia so Martial can share his extensive knowledge of the Battle of Fromelles with family members of those Australians who fought there. Martial will be guest of honour at a reception in Sydney on Thursday, September 8, jointly hosted by the Fromelles Association and the Australian branch of the Western Front Association. Jim Munday is then bringing Martial, and wife Catherine, to Port Macquarie to meet family members of the Wilson brothers and others whose relatives fought at Fromelles. The morning tea will be held at Port Panthers on Monday, September 12 from 10am for a $5 admission. Those wishing to attend will need to contact Jim Munday on 6585 2850 or email jim. munday@bigpond.com

remains unbreakable Family’s connection cemented in blood By CHRISTINA PARKIN AUSTRALIA was the only army in the British Commonwealth that had voluntary enlistment during World War I despite the Prime Minister, Billy Hughes, trying to introduce conscription with two referenda. On July 17, 1915, the three Wilson brothers from Hamilton, (now Hibbard near Port Macquarie), Sam aged 29, Eric aged 19, and Jim aged 18 (with a consent letter from his father in his pocket) presented themselves at Liverpool to join the Australian Imperial Force (AIF). Their country was at war and they were answering the call. Sam and Jim sailed for Egypt on the Euripides on November 2, 1915, as part of the 11th reinforcement 3rd Battalion. However, both suffered a bout of the mumps before joining the newly formed 53rd battalion on February 15, 1916, at Zeitoun, Egypt. The 53rd Battalion had a balance of Gallipoli veterans from the 1st Battalion and raw recruits from Australia. Eric didn’t sail with his brothers, probably because he was only 5 foot 3 and 3/4 inches tall. He did not leave Australia until March 6, 1916,

A photo of the three Wilson brothers, Sam, Eric and Jim, who enlisted together in 1916, but only Jim returned on the ‘Star of England’ bound for Egypt as part of the 15th reinforcement 1st Battalion. A large contingent of the Cooee/Snowball recruits were on the same sailing - all would ultimately serve in France. On April 20, 1916 Eric, transferred to the 53rd Battalion and once again the three brothers were reunited. The 53rd battalion arrived at Fromelles on July 10, 1916. Fromelles was considered a quiet area on the western front and the normal process

was to acclimatise new recruits in an area such as this - a so-called nursery. Even the seasoned Anzacs had no experience in trench warfare in open country. On July 13, Sam writes his last letter home to his mother, Isabella Wilson, casually describing the countryside and stating that: “We are now right in the thick of it, and I can tell you frankly it is not one quarter as bad as I expected. Our boys are a splendid lot, and a credit to Australia. We

were under fire the other night, and they were as cool as cucumbers, each man at his allotted task like an old soldier. All the boys are well, and as happy as song birds”. (Port Macquarie News September 16, 1916) Six days later Sam and Eric are dead, 12 days after setting foot on French soil. The Somme campaign commenced on July 1, 1916, to prevent the Germans withdrawing troops to reinforce the bloody battle at Verdun. The battle near the village of Fromelles began at 6pm on July 19 but Eric and Sam are reported missing – later confirmed missing in action. Jim received a gunshot wound to the neck, reported missing before being found a couple of days later. Thirty-six days after the battle on August 25, 1916, Jim’s father received a letter from base records confirming Jim was wounded. After recovering Jim returned to the front, his records show him being hospitalized frequently during the rest of his service. He left England for home on January 25, 1919, on board the ‘Ceramic’ arriving in Australia on the March 14, 1919. His mother had died before his return. On the night of July 19, 1916, at Fromelles the Australians suffered 5,533 casualties. A total of 1917 of these were deaths. In terms of numbers, this remains the highest number of casualties in a 14 hour period in the history of the Australian Army. To put this into context in today’s terms, the total population of Wauchope in the 2001 census was 5,213 - in other words Australia lost the equivalent to the whole town of Wauchope, killed or injured, in one night. OUR

NSW Govt lets GAL you tap and go

MIA FRECKLINGTON

How long have you lived in or around the Hastings? I have lived in the Port Macquarie area for about 14 years. What do you love most about the Hastings? There is so much to see and do, and the beaches and views are beautiful. Where do you work and what do you love about your work? I work at Kumiai-Ryu Martial Arts System and I love everything about it. I teach kids karate classes and ladies only Muay Thai classes. What do you like least about your work? I love everything about my work but if I had to put something it would be cleaning the dojos mats after a big sweaty Muay Thai class. How do you start your day? Depending on the day, usually I start off the day by training (running, bag work, kata) before heading to work. What do you do in your spare time? Spare time? I am a big reader, so any spare time is usually spent on that or spending time with the family. What is the achievement you are most proud of? Going to Thailand for the KRMAS Muay Thai training camp for 2 weeks, training twice a day at the Sityodtong Muay Thai Camp in Pattaya and receiving my Sityodtong Patch to put on my Muay Thai Shorts, also getting through the training with a separated shoulder made it that little bit harder.

TAP on to Android Pay: Customers in NSW will be the first in the nation to be able to pay for government services with the tap of an Android smartphone, as Service NSW becomes the first government agency in Australia to adopt Google’s cashless Android Pay service. The new contactless payment service is now available to Android users in all Service NSW centres across the state, providing customers with another convenient payment option. Around 90 per cent of people now have a mobile phone, and with the popularity of Android phones it makes sense for us to provide this quick, efficient option for our customers. Governments have traditionally been very slow on the uptake when it comes to new technology, whereas customers latch on much more quickly. With Service NSW we are completely changing that – becoming fast followers – so that our customer service keeps pace with the options people want. Android Pay is a mobile wallet that can store credit cards, debit cards and loyalty cards on compatible Android smartphones. The service is available to customers who bank with a growing number of participating banks and credit unions. Android Pay is available now in every Service NSW centre, with plans to bring the service to Service NSW’s digital stores, website and app

Performing arts companies to tour Port Macquarie: Three performing arts companies will tour Port Macquarie in 2016 with support from the NSW Government’s Performing Arts Touring funding program. The Australian Chamber Orchestra’s (ACO) 17-piece string ensemble ACO Collective; CDP Theatre’s production of ‘Mr Stink’; Critical Stages’ production of ‘Stones in his Pockets’ and Erth Visual and Physical’s Erth’s ‘Prehistoric Aquarium’ will come to Port Macquarie in 2016. I am tremendously excited that these productions are coming to the Glasshouse and I know there will be keen interest within the community. It’s a great benefit for everyone to have new and exciting talent on show right in our backyard.

THE COWPER REPORT With Luke Hartsuyker

Federal Member for Cowper

THE weather is warming as we transition from Winter to Spring, so it can be easy to get complacent about contracting influenza, which can cause hospitalisation or even kill. Unfortunately, the flu has no respect for seasons, as we see from a late winter surge in influenza cases recorded in New South Wales in the past two weeks. Almost 2000 people were struck down with influenza up and down the NSW coast, so it is extremely important to ensure you are immunised and those who are sick are isolated from others until they recover. NSW Health has issued a warning about the spike in flu numbers and urged sick people to stay home and away from the elderly, aged care facilities or children. Most of the outbreaks are caused by the A(H3N2) strain of the virus, which is covered by the Quadrivalent flu vaccine. In April, I welcomed the change in health legislation which now allows mid north coast residents to get their annual flu shot at chemists from an accredited pharmacist, rather than going to the doctor. Medical centres will continue to administer a Federal Government’s Medicare-funded vaccine to eligible patients under the National Immunisation Program, while accredited pharmacies will run private clinics for the ineligible patients.

Let’s talk about sex ... well ‘gender’

GENDER refers to language and sex to people. “This word is only used in grammar and not otherwise as a synonym for sex,” said the Collins book titled ‘English Usage’. It was referring to the word ‘gender’, which it said should be used only for grammar – not for distinguishing men and women. English is a living language and as you read this many words are undergoing a subtle change in meaning. A word that has almost completed the change is gender. I was in the audience recently when a young woman talked about the dominance of males over females. It was an excellent speech, but she chose to give it a title that included the word gender. I can imagine somebody whispering to her in a horrified tone: “You can’t say sex.” The word came to my attention, again, following the Melbourne Cup, when gender was thrown around like confetti at a wedding. In brief: There are two sexes – male and female – and three genders in language - male, female and neuter. Stephen Murray-Smith in his book ‘Right Words’ says “gender is the he, she, it distinction in language”. ‘Reader’s Digest’ says English has three genders – masculine, feminine and neuter. Murray-Smith goes on to say “female forms

my

of nouns should be avoided where they are likely to cause misunderstanding or give offence”. In my opinion the move away from sex has been caused by one word – intercourse. If we say sex some people assume we mean intercourse. My big dictionary says the word ‘gender’ can refer to sex but “now only jocular”. The dictionary says the word is now a euphemism (“especially feminine”) for the sex of a human being. “I shouldn’t say sex; I should say gender.” So said a woman only a few weeks ago. She seemed worried that sex was one of those rude words people shouldn’t use in polite company. Traditionally, we used the word ‘sex’ to refer to male and female of a species. Gender had its main place in language distinctions. Fowler, admittedly early in the 20th century, said gender was a grammatical term only and to talk of people as male or female gender was either a jocularity

LAURIE BARBER

(permissible or not according to context) or a blunder. Partridge said that, as a synonym for sex, gender was jocular and archaic. The ‘Oxford Companion to the English Language’ said gender was “a grammatical distinction”. It referred to language, not to people. Pam Peters in the ‘Cambridge Australian English Style Guide’ acknowledged that style guides were still insisting that gender should not be used for sex, but “there can be little doubt that the word has established its place in this field of discourse”. In other words, another sex barrier has been broken down, and more scolding mothers will be saying to their offspring “don’t say sex, say gender”. I would say very few people these days use the word sex, when they have the word gender at their disposal. Some associated words for ‘gender’ include ‘gender-bender’, a person wearing the clothes of the opposite sex (or gender, if you insist) and ‘gender gap’, especially in the United States, referring to the different attitudes between men and women. So, there we have it. The word can be used, especially in a jocular way, to the sex of a human being. As for me, I prefer sex. lauriebarber.com; lbword@midcoast.com.au

Holiday Coast Credit Union Greater Port Macquarie Business Awards winner of 2016 Excellence in Innovation sponsored by Port Macquarie-Hastings Council. From left: Leisa Davies PMHC with Finely Morrison, Peter Monaghan and Peta Pinson all from Stabilcorp. (Photo: Lindsay Moller Photography)

Winning streak continues

Council in their Fit for the Future submission clearly stated that they intended on applying for the rate rise and would seek 5 year duration of increases which would be cumulative.

LOCAL Wauchope company, Stabilcorp, has once again been recognised for its achievements in Innovation. On the back of being announced an ABA100 Winner in The Australian Business Awards 2016 for New Product Innovation, just two weeks ago, the winning streak is continuing. Stabilcorp was announced Winner of the Excellence in Innovation at the Holiday Coast Credit Union Greater Port Macquarie Business Awards held at Port Panthers on Friday night, August 26. Managing Director, Peta Pinson said: “It is an absolute honour to win this award. It is testimony to what a small, close-knit team

can achieve when they pull together and work towards the same goal. The ShoulderMaster is at the beginning of its journey in contributing to making Australian roads safer through its ability to widen road shoulders efficiently and economically. Our vision is that the ShoulderMaster will become a traditional tool in the road maintenance industry which will assist all levels of Government in saving lives and reducing serious injuries caused by motor vehicle accidents on Australian roads”. Stabilcorp were also Finalists for Industry, Manufacturing and Engineering – sponsored by Safework NSW.

IN a recent media release, Port Macquarie Hastings Council has stated that they have no plans for a 52.4% rate rise. This release comes one month after I launched my campaign to run as a Mayoral candidate. At the start of my campaign I exposed Council’s planned rate increase which was documented in the late report by the General Manager and subsequent submission to the Minister for Local Government as part of the State Government’s ‘Fit for the Future’ reform of Councils. I have quoted the rate increase of 52.4% from IPART’s assessment of Port Macquarie Hastings Councils own submission and I have also highlighted the Council resolution of Peter Besseling and Councillors made on 17 June 2015 agreeing with the action plan to raise rates. These documents are FACT. Council’s recent media release does not clearly address the rate rise issue. It only says ‘there is currently no plan to increase rates by 52.4%”. Peter Besseling says: “There is no resolution to apply for a rate increase and no application has been made for a rate increase.” The truth for those who have the smarts to see a political spin when one is given will understand that there is no application because Council cannot make it until the second week of February. I contacted IPART last Friday and spoke at length with regards to the timeframe that Councils who are applying for a rate rise have. I was informed that Councils cannot make their applications until February and if they do not have their applications into IPART at that time they will miss the opportunity to be eligible for a special rate variation until the following year. Council in their Fit for the Future submission clearly stated that they intended on applying for the rate rise and would seek 5 year duration of increases which would be cumulative. In the same submission Council identified that risk for the rate rises not going ahead would be ‘that a new council may not commit to the proposed improvement action plan’. Peter Besseling and the Councillors standing for re-election have all voted and agreed with the rate rise action plan. Previous Councillor Sharon Griffiths who is recontesting the election has recently announced that she will not support a 52.4% rate increase. The previous Council have misled the Community with their Fit for the Future submission and have made a mockery of the State Government’s plan to reform local government with this Council media release. Peter Besseling has used the office of Mayor with the support of the General Manager and

Thursday 25 August, 2016

the Council’s communications department to combat candidates during the local government elections. This media release by Council is an abuse of office. The actions of Council and the incumbent Mayor Peter Besseling will be referred to the Office of Local Government for investigation and will also be referred to the NSW Electoral Commission. I ask you is this the behaviour of a Council committed to transparency and integrity. The General Manager and Peter Besseling need to now release a statement which clearly states their intentions to support or apply for a rate rise in February.

“In just 4 weeks I have put the brakes on Council’s plan to increase our rates by 52.4%. Imagine what I could achieve as your Mayor in 4 years!” pinson4mayor@gmail.com

The Three Rivers, Three Distances event is now even more inviting with the inclusion of two shorter races. (Photo: Rob Oates Ballantyne Photography)

Get some paddle power By LIZZIE McLEOD THERE has never been a better time to enjoy our rivers and test your fitness. Port Macquarie’s favourite annual river race this Sunday (August 28), along the Wilson, Maria, and Hastings rivers is now attractive to more enthusiasts with three race distances, hence the new name for the event ‘Three Rivers, Three Distances’. “This is the first year we have introduced shorter distances,” said Hazel Kirby, event organiser, from the Port Macquarie Rowing Club. “25km is a great challenge for those people who can do those distances, but for those who can’t, up until now they have been excluded from the race.” However, Hazel and fellow organiser Steve Thomas have decided that everyone, no matter what their fitness level, should be able to join in the fun. “Anything that can be self-propelled can enter the race,” Hazel said. “If you’ve got a bathtub, bring it along.”

The race has been contested for eleven years and has attracted people from across Australia, and as always, everyone is encouraged to come along. “It’s not exclusive, it’s not just for rowers or paddlers, or outriggers,” said Hazel. “This is where you are all in, and you are all racing in your different craft.” The competitors, families and friends are in for a treat with the spectacular views on the day for competitors and those watching with picturesque scenery on and off the water. “This event really is unique,” Hazel said. “And the water in the Hastings, Wilson, and Maria, is just beautiful. Beautiful conditions, beautiful scenery, and then you’ve got this eclectic mix of craft.” Hazel and Steve are not only keen rowers, but they are very proud locals as well. “We just wanted to be able to give back to the community while we are motivated and enthusiastic,” explained Hazel. Another Port Macquarie local, Ryley Batt, will again be supporting the event.

Rhyme your way to a new career By SUE PATERICK

Quilters ready for October expo By LIZZIE McLEOD LOCAL quilters have been working hard for their upcoming exhibition on the October long weekend. The Laurieton United Services Club Friendship Quilters, pictured above, are welcoming the public to come and see the fantastic quilting and hand crafted pieces they will have on display on October 1 and 2. The group have been together for 14 years and have created all sorts of crafts ranging from quilting, applique, fancywork, crocheting, knitting, cross stitch and all types of ‘stitchery’. The group is extremely valued in the community as not only talented quilters, but also as a massive help to those in need. “We produce mastectomy pillows,” said Barbara Booth, member of Friendship Quilters. “We produce about one hundred a year for the Base Hospital cancer unit. “We give them to

the ladies who have had breast surgery and they really appreciate it and often send us great letters of thanks.” The group also gives cash donations to local charities and others in need. “At the moment we are giving our proceeds to the Hastings Home Hospice for palliative care,” said Barbara. “They are a wonderful group of people. They are volunteers and they look after people who have life-threatening illnesses. They give great service to them and their carers and families. They don’t get much help from the government. A lot of what they do is from public money and donations from people like our group.” The Friendship Quilters exhibition will take place at the Laurieton United Services Club on Saturday, October 1, from 10am-4.30pm and will continue on Sunday, October 2, from 10am-3.30pm. Entry is just $3.

STEP up to the microphone at Kempsey Library next month at a regional heat of the Australian Poetry Slam for a chance to share your stories, lyrics, monologues or poems with an international audience. In its 11th year, the Australian Poetry Slam is a nationwide competition and the largest spokenword program in the Southern Hemisphere. The Poetry Slam is a unique event because at every level of the competition, from regional heats through to national finals, judges are chosen at random from the live audience. The five chosen judges then score each performer out of 10, with the top and bottom scores discarded and the remaining three scores totalled to give a ranking for that performer. The two performers with the highest scores will then represent their community in State, Territory or Regional finals. Again the audience will choose two winners, who will then go on to the National Finals in Sydney. The winner will tour the Bookworm International Literary Festival in China and the Ubud Writers and Reader Festival in Bali. These two countries also run their own Poetry Slam competitions. According to the organisers, over the last decade the Australian Poetry Slam has uncovered amazing talent and enhanced the career opportunities of previous winners. The theme for this year’s slam is Write a Revolution. So if anyone in the Macleay Valley has something to say then start writing and rehearsing.

This is the fifth time that Kempsey Library has been involved in the Australian Poetry Slam, and the second year it has been held at the library. Each contestant will have two minutes in which to wow the judges with their words, personality, style and charisma. The Poetry Slam is open to people of all ages but their work has to be original, and they have to perform it themselves. Librarian, Angie Meers, said that last year’s Kempsey Slam was highly successful with over 80 people in the audience and 14 performers, including two high school students. There was also a good representation from the South West Rocks Writers’ Group. “We are looking forward to repeating this success and want to encourage performers from outside our region to come along and compete, as everyone is welcome,” Ms Meers said. The current Australian Poetry Slam Champion, Phil Wilcox, will run the event, and talented Kempsey Shire Council staffer, Georgia Rayner, will provide the musical entertainment. The two Macleay Valley winners will receive financial assistance to help with travel and accommodation for their trip to Sydney to compete in the New South Wales finals. The regional heat of the Australian Poetry Slam will be held at Kempsey Library on Friday, September 9. Performers need to register at 4.30pm and the Slam will kick off at 5pm. To find out more contact Kempsey Library on 6566 3210 or ksclibrary@kempsey.nsw.gov.au For the Poetry Slam’s rules and conditions go to www.australianpoetryslam.com

Make sure your vote is counted By CHRISTINA PARKIN

Sharon Lamb pictured with some of her light photography at the Tasty Treats Café at South West Rocks

Unique photos gain acclaim WITH only another nine days left before closing of the Sculpture in the Gaol event and announcement of the winner at 1pm on Saturday, September 3, voters need to get their choices in as soon as possible. Well worth the drive out to South West Rocks, the annual Sculpture in the Gaol returned for its eighth year in the beautiful Trial Bay Gaol. Visitors can also track down artworks and sculptures down the ‘Escapee Trail’ placed in local businesses. One of those artwork venues is Tasty Treats at Backbeach, hosting a very unusual but captivating form of photography. “Everyone visualises it differently - you just have to see it in person,” says creative genius, Sharon Lamb, whose background is nuclear medicine. Sharon and her husband own the local Trial Bay Butchery. “Each image is photographed using a long exposure in complete darkness, using a tiny torch to paint light onto the subject. “The image is then baked onto brushed metal, so as the viewer walks past the image,

the light changes are reflected by the metal surface.” Sharon has photographed a variety of themes of items from food, to Lego, nudes, musical instruments and is beginning to be ‘noticed’ beyond the Macleay for their value as indoor décor. “My violin piece was sold to the owners of an art gallery in Sydney who were holidaying in the area and visited ‘By Design’ in Gladstone – I don’t even know which gallery,” says Ms Lamb. “The nudes are really personal but I have done a beautiful one of a pregnancy, capturing all the gorgeous curves – the more, the better, to capture the light. Sharon describes the technique as “so different, that no one can teach me”, but has persevered for many hours to create a unique artform. “TAKE the time to read your ballot paper and its instructions carefully,” advises Richard Carroll, a media officer for the NSW Electoral Commission. “Feel free to ask questions of the polling officers or ask for a new ballot sheet if you feel you have made a mistake.” Pre-polling starts on Monday, August 29, so it is important for voters to get to know who all the candidates are for their local council election. Your Local Independent has invited each candidate to submit a brief profile for the convenience of our readers; this will be displayed in the edition of September 1. Meanwhile, Your Local Independent approached the NSW Electoral Commission for an explanation of the Port Macquarie ballot sheet. Both Kempsey Shire and Port Macquarie Hastings Council elections will both determine eight councillor positions and one mayoral position. The minimum number you have to vote for is half of the vacant positions for the role. The Kempsey Shire ballot is much simpler as there are no groupings of candidates. You only need to vote for a minimum of one of the two mayoral candidates and a minimum of four of the councillor positions (from a field of 16). However, on the Port Macquarie Hastings Shire Council ballot sheet, there will be three individuals for the mayor position with five groups (of four candidates each) and six

individual ungrouped councillor candidates. There will be one square for each group which is placed above the line, and each candidate will have their own square below the line. The minimum required for a valid vote is to vote for one group only above the line, or number only four individual candidates below the line. You can vote either above or below the line, but you cannot vote using a combination of both. If you wish, you can vote for two or more groups above the line. To vote for individual candidates, you must place a number in their box positioned below the line, voting for at least four (or more up to a total of 26). Pre-polling will take place for the Kempsey Shire Council elections from Monday, August 29 at the Australian Election Company’s shopfront in the Centrepoint Arcade, Smith Street, Kempsey (contacts are 6566 3350 or Mobile 0475 456 606); Sydney Town Hall or the CWA Hall in 47 Landsborough Street at South West Rocks, essentially 8.30am – 4.30pm. S E N I O R S EXPO

Sarah’s story an expo must “

You have got to keep trying and set up strategies that work for you

Rod Lewis and Scott Marsh are the driving force behind Home Instead Senior Care and the Seniors Information Expos to be manageable – the legalities, lists, visual prompts, calendars and recurring task lists. “For example, I’ve tried to automate my life as much as I can using my phone’s reminders – I can even forget to eat then wonder why I feel ‘peckish’ – and setting up automatic payments for everything.” The first of three Seniors Information Expos throughout September as part of Dementia Awareness Month will be held on Thursday, September 1, and Sarah’s presentation on the effects of early onset dementia will be a popular presentation. Home Instead Senior Care, winners of the ‘New Business’ category at Friday’s 2016

THREE years ago, Sarah from Port Macquarie, at the age of 56, was a highly achieving executive, who was beginning to have short term memory problems as a consequence of surgery on her brain and the subsequent management of her post-operative treatment. A casual conversation with a representative of Alzheimer’s Australia resulted in a referral back to her neurologist and the subsequent diagnosis of ‘early-onset’ dementia. “It just sucked the oxygen of my life out of me – I lost my career overnight,” explains Sarah. As a volunteer for Alzheimer’s Australia, Sarah has found a way to maintain meaning in her life and still help others. “I write short articles and can give powerpoint presentations, drawing on all my past experience in that area,” she says. “Most people with the diagnosis of dementia are more likely to die of something else – you have got to keep trying and set up strategies that work for you. “These strategies must start being implemented as soon as the diagnosis is made, before the ongoing behaviours become a challenge.” Sarah feels having a GP who must listen to you and be comfortable about sharing information and having the hard conversations with you is absolutely necessary. “If you are not happy, get another opinion,” states Sarah. In her presentation at the upcoming Seniors’ Information Expo, Sarah will describe some of the ‘must dos’ to enable a diagnosis of dementia

Greater Port Macquarie Business Awards, are hosting the events to provide seniors and their families with accessible and localised seniorsrelated information in Wauchope, Laurieton and Kempsey, following the success of their Port Macquarie expo in April. “We’re thrilled at the overwhelming response from local organisations and community groups to be a part of the expo,” says Home Instead Senior Care owner, Scott Marsh. “In fact, we very quickly reached exhibitor capacity at all three expos. Obviously this is disappointing for those organisations who missed out, but it means that locals visiting the expo will be able to speak to a wide variety of organisations. “Ultimately it’s about providing relevant and timely services information so that seniors across the Hastings can make the right decision for them.” The Wauchope Expo will be held at Wauchope RSL Club, Thursday, September 1, from 10am – 2pm and entry is free. All three expos will also include a ‘Busting the Myths about Dementia’ presentation from Alzheimer’s Australia NSW and light

entertainment from local musical groups, including Sing Australia at both Wauchope and Laurieton expos. Exhibitors at the Wauchope expo include Home Instead Senior Care, Dementia Friendly Living Environments, All Round Financial Planning, ACAT, Advance Care Planners, Australian Unity, Alzheimer’s Australia NSW, Broken Bago Day Club, Bundaleer Care Services, Commonwealth Respite and Homecare Packages, Connect Alert Alarms and Cameron Grange. Hastings District Respite Centre, Kincare, Meals on Wheels, Mayo Home Nursing, NRMA, Plunkett’s Pharmacy, Seniors Rights Services, Sing Australia, Stockland, Wauchope RSL, Wauchope Bonsai Club, Wauchope Garden Group and 2 WAY FM are all represented at the expo. The other expos will also run from 10am-2pm at Laurieton United Services Club on Thursday, September 15, and the Kempsey Macleay RSL on Thursday, September 29. The Seniors Information expos are sponsored by Your Local Independent, Wauchope RSL Club, Laurieton United Services Club and Kempsey Macleay RSL. Home Instead Senior Care provides high quality in-home care for older Australians. Care and help provided ranges from personal and lifestyle needs, while also providing welcome companionship.

SENIORS EXPO Aussies are getting older AUSTRALIA’S aged population has increased by almost 20 per cent since 2010, according to data released recently by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS). There were 2.2 million people aged 65 years and over living in Australia’s capital cities in 2015 (up from 1.8 million in 2010). Additionally, 1.4 million live in areas outside our capitals (up from 1.2 million in 2010). Hobart has the oldest population of any Australian capital city. Hobart’s median age – the age at which half the population is older and half is younger – was 39.8 years at June 2015, compared to 37.4 years for Australia. Adelaide was the next oldest capital (38.8 years) followed by Sydney (36.1) and Melbourne

The local Seniors Expos provide vital information on brain health

Sessions target brain health ALZHEIMER’S Australia NSW is happy to be participating in the Seniors Info Expo series being hosted by Home Instead Senior Care. These expos will provide a great opportunity for people in Laurieton, Wauchope and Kempsey to have access to information about community and in-home services that may assist those in need. They will feature free dementia and brain health information sessions. Each session will include four presentations: • ‘Busting the Myths about Dementia’ will explain what dementia is and discuss common myths. This will be presented by Julie Dunn from Hastings Respite Care in Laurieton and Wauchope and in Kempsey, it will be presented by Debbie Hannan of Parklands Cottage dementia day respite service. • ‘The Dementia Experience’ will be presented by Sarah from Port Macquarie, a person who is living with the symptoms of younger onset dementia. • ‘The Carer Experience’ will be presented by Gai McPherson, a former carer for her husband,

who was living with dementia. • ‘Your Brain Matters’, featuring dementia risk reduction strategies. Presented by Kaylene Parker from Alzheimer’s Australia NSW. Gary Thomas, Sector and Capacity Development Manager from Alzheimer’s Australia NSW, said the event was a great success when held for the first time in 2015. “The feedback from those events was phenomenal and people in attendance stated they learnt so much to help them understand dementia and how they can reduce their own risk of developing dementia,” Mr Thomas said. “Please come along and learn what you can about dementia, brain health and available services.” The expos will be held at Wauchope RSL, Cameron Street, Wauchope, Thursday 1 September, 10am-2pm; Laurieton LUSC, Seymour Street, Laurieton, Thursday 15 September, 10am-2pm and Kempsey Macleay RSL, Smith Street Kempsey, Thursday 29 September, 10am-2pm.

(36.0). Darwin was the youngest capital city (33.3). The residents of Tea Gardens – Hawks Nest, near Port Stephens on the New South Wales coast, were officially Australia’s oldest, with a median age of 61.0 years in 2015. People living in Tuncurry, on the NSW mid north coast, were the next oldest (59.7 years), followed by residents of Bribie Island in Queensland (59.3), Paynesville in Victoria’s Gippsland region (59.0) and Victor Harbor on South Australia’s Fleurieu Peninsula (58.1). “The older populations in these areas reflect a preference among many Australians to retire to coastal and rural parts of the country,” said ABS Director of Demography Beidar Cho.

So much more to Meals on Wheels

takes groups of older people out into the community for a group meal or morning tea

MEALS on Wheels Mid North Coast is a respected six decade old community organisation that has grown with the times and evolved to meet the changing needs of clients throughout our coastal communities. As most people know, Meals on Wheels provides meals for those over 65 who will benefit from the convenience of having tasty, nutritious cooked meals delivered to their door, or prepared ready for collection by the client themselves. People are often surprised to find out that Meals on Wheels is much more than just a meal delivery service and is becoming increasingly flexible to meet the ever-changing needs of their current and future clients. In the past, Meals on Wheels has been seen as a free charity service, however that is not the case and registered clients pay a subsidised and affordable price for each meal. This helps ensure the highest quality in both taste and nutrition, with

Eating With “ Friends program

Tasty, nutritious cooked meals delivered to your door a wide range of choices and options available. Through their large network of volunteers who deliver the meals, the invaluable service is also able to monitor the wellbeing of clients, should they need this as they get older. Where appropriate, the organisation is able to refer clients to other organisations that can offer a different range of services. This along with regular, nutritionally balanced meals, can make

a significant difference by enabling the client to remain in their own home, rather than needing to enter residential care. Although staying in one’s own home is often seen as a preference, social isolation can become a problem. It is now recognised as one of the most destructive issues for older people, and is frequently cited as a root cause of failing health,

Carers also need helping hand COMMONWEALTH Respite and Home Care Packages provide a 24-hour respite service for carers. We assist carers (someone who provides care to a family member, friend or neighbour who has a disability, chronic, terminal or mental illness or is frail aged) by providing respite, particularly in the event there is a family crisis, an emergency or the carer is admitted to hospital. Our service can also assist carers by providing support to give them a break from their caring role on one-off and short-term occasions.

Respite is a break for the carer from the responsibility of their caring role. It is a way of relieving carer stress and it is important for their health and wellbeing that they make time for themselves. Our role is to support carers and link them to appropriate supports. To acknowledge and celebrate the role of carers, we will be holding events across the mid north coast, including ‘Self-Care Matters’ workshops with the Quest for Life Foundation during Carers Week October 16-22. To find out about these activities and others

in your area, please call our service on 1800 052 222. Community Care Packages – Mid North Coast - Ensuring independence in your own home: Our centre also offers community care services in providing Level 2 and Level 3 Aged Care Home Care Packages. If you are caring for someone who has been assessed by the Aged Care Assessment Team for a Home Care Package and are seeking regular ongoing support, please phone 6568 4164, to

discuss how we may be able to support you. Services may include: • personal care assistance • domestic support • meal preparation, shopping and menu planning • re-engagement in social activities • in-home safety equipment • respite for carers. For further information on respite options or Home Care Packages, please phone: FREECALL 1800 052 222

Interaction a key in slowing dementia SOCIAL interaction and meaningful activities provide immense benefits for people living with dementia and memory loss. Participation can slow the progress of symptoms, assist people to stay in their own homes longer and provide greater independence and improved quality of life. Based on the Montessori principles, HDRC Services focus on the person’s strengths, interests and abilities to offer positive, personalised social activities at comfortable day centres, as well as a range of fun activities out in the community.

There are opportunities for creative expression through drama, singing and art and craft programs as well as opportunities for gardening, exercising and building friendships. Carers can take valuable short breaks, knowing their loved one is actively enjoying themselves in the care of a friendly, trained and supportive team. Discover the Golden Triangle MACLEAY Valley Travel has a fully conducted group tour that visits three of the most fascinating places in the world. The Golden Triangle is the area of north Thailand close to the Burmese and Laos borders. It used to be the premier opium growing area of the world, but now strict control in Thailand has pushed opium growing to the remoter areas of Burma and Laos. The Golden Triangle is a scenic, beautiful area and many interesting hill tribes live in this area. Land-locked Laos is probably the most laidback country in the world and possibly because of this it is one of the poorest. Magical Laos is home to outstanding landscapes, compelling history and enchanting people, including its intriguing hill-tribe groups. You will experience the gentle pace of life in a place reminiscent of old-world Asia. The tour spends two days cruising the mighty Mekong River and three days at World Heritagelisted Luang Prabang with its glittering temples, night markets and gorgeous scenery. Despite its sad history, the Cambodian people are warm and friendly. The magnificent temples of Angkor are the main attraction, but the country

has much more to offer. The capital Phnom Penh with its riverside setting and colonial era architecture is buzzing with life. Macleay Valley Travel’s 19-day tour departing March 13, 2017, represents great value as all of the following are included in the price of $4675 per person twin share: • Air fares including taxes and levies with Singapore Airlines and Silk Air into Chiang Mai and out of Phnom Penh, plus two flights within south east Asia. • A 2-night stopover in Singapore • A 4-day tour of the Golden Triangle area • A 7-day coach, air and boat tour of Laos • A 5-day Cambodia tour • Good, mainly 3 to 4 star accommodation • All transfers, transport and entrance fees • Tips for tour guides and drivers • Services of local tour guides and an Australian tour escort. All the Good stuff in our Community

World welcomes Port Salvos By CHRISTINA PARKIN

FOR those called to ministry in the Salvation Army, a posting to Jamaica in the Caribbean would definitely be considered ‘out of this world’. But for husband and wife team, Bruce and Cheryl Carpenter, it’s a dream of a lifetime. “We were called to international service, which has been an incredible experience,” says Mr Carpenter. Cheryl Carpenter initially worked in Aged Care at the Bethany Hostel from 2005-7 before studying community welfare at North Coast TAFE. After three years of local ministry, the couple were promoted to Lieutenant Colonels and selected to assist with business administration roles in the Caribbean, long referred to as the ‘West Indies’. For Cheryl, her past studies now form the basis of her current job developing policies and legislative requirements as part of the ‘Altogether Safe’ program for the Salvation Army for child safety and vulnerable adults in 16 countries.

Adjusting to life in the Caribbean has been a challenge, according to Bruce, as life is so different to Australia in so many ways. “Christianity is very strong, with Seventh Day Adventism predominant in Jamaica,” explains Bruce. Mr Carpenter explains how the islands are passionate about their cricket but are not very multi-cultural, compared to the melting pot of cultures in Australia. With the Caribbean populated through slavery from Africa, there is a strong recognition of those roots to the degree that Haiti has joined the African Union as of June, 2016. Tourism, resorts and cruise ships dominate the northern coast of Jamaica, while coffee leads the development of the rural sector, along with education, particularly led by the University of West Indies which leads the current studies on the Zika virus. The minimum wage is about the equivalent of $A2.50 in Haiti, and although Australians may think it nothing to pay $9 for a coffee and cake, food is much cheaper there, especially in the markets.

Although Haiti is considered a very ‘poor’ country, there are a lot of professional people driving development. “It’s an incredible period of change and we are blessed to be ministering in this way – we sit in meetings and boardrooms and have to pinch ourselves,” says Mrs Carpenter. “The people we meet help us to understand life in a different way; they are not time constrained. “We can only learn from their way of life.” Mr Carpenter, a former member of the Rotary Club of Port Macquarie Sunrise also explains that Rotary is also very strong in the Caribbean. He is involved with an after-school homework project and a partnership with an aged

care facility and a girl’s home (the equivalent to a foster home). “We miss our family in Port Macquarie – Simon and Lauren Carpenter with Tyler, Charlie and Brodie and our other grandchildren – we are all really good with Skype now,” says Mrs Carpenter. “We plan to retire in about eight years, and although Head Office in London can move us around, we have had extraordinary opportunities to travel – fifteen trips to Haiti, Alaska, NASA, Peru and a white Christmas,” explains Mr Carpenter. “More than I could have done in a lifetime of living in Port Macquarie.”

IT’S time to get a team of four together and register for the Australians for Women’s Health (A4WH) Obstacle Challenge set down to start from 10am Saturday, September 24, at the Lank Bain Sporting Complex at Wauchope. There are a number of age divisions for both young and older, family and sports code teams. Besides the fun, laughter and great prizes to be won, your entry will be helping Australians for Women’s Health (A4WH), an Australian charitable foundation founded in 2010 by local specialist Gynaecologist Obstetrician, Dr Ray Hodgson. Its objective is to reduce maternal mortality and morbidity and to provide gynaecological surgery to women in developing countries. A4WH has two major arms – maternal health and ‘Prolapse Down Under’ and the funds raised from the Obstacle Challenge will go toward building a new Mothers and Babies hospital in Charikot, Nepal. Developing countries have the highest rates of maternal mortality. Get your workmates, family members and sporting teams together for this fun obstacle challenge day. Registration is $100 per team of four in each event. The Rotary Clubs of the Hastings are assisting in running the event and more information can be obtained by emailing a4wh@sunrise-rotary.org.au

Kempsey PCYC already a winner By SUE PATERICK SIX boxers from Kempsey’s PCYC will take on the best amateur fighters Cessnock has to offer at a tournament on Saturday, September 3. After their fight in Cessnock, the boxers will head to Sydney later in September to fight in the State Titles. Then the Kempsey PCYC’s own tournament will be held at Melville High School Hall on Saturday, November 26, from 6pm. Eight boxers for the Kempsey PCYC will take part, along with fighters from boxing clubs throughout the Mid North Coast. According to PCYC Youth Case Manager, Senior Constable Adam Fathers, the boxers are evenly matched and all are excited. “They’re looking forward to it and training hard so they are ready to rumble in September,” he said. “A couple are interested in pursuing a professional career and all have the potential to win the State Title.” Adam himself is no stranger to the ring and was chosen to represent NSW in his younger days. He won the State of Origin Boxing competition as an amateur and then represented Australia in a tournament against New Zealand and won that too. All up he boxed as an amateur for 17 years. Adam works with young offenders and youth at risk at the Kempsey PCYC and his role is to prevent young offenders from committing further offences. “I try to improve their situation and help to prevent risk,” Adam said. “I enjoy helping young people with the goals they have set themselves and helping them improve their life to become a better person.” To this end, he provides one on one case

Mind games are crucial now WELL, haven’t the Sharks hit the wall. With just two rounds to go coach Shane Flanagan and his players will be a mental mess. As Your Local Independent constantly points out, the mind game in football is as important, if not more so, than the physical confrontation. So when it comes down to tipping, you have to try to work out the headspace of the teams. At the moment the Sharks’ headspace is undergoing some drastic work. The high-flyers of the comp up until the end of Round 20, have not tasted success since. We are now at Round 25, with just two to go before the finals. Meanwhile Ricky Stuart, over at the Raiders, is laughing. The Canberra boys are in sensational form. Remember, momentum is key leading into the finals. The Broncos and Cowboys both seem to have pushed their premiership train back on the tracks and are now looking a major threat again. While the Storm’s tough mindset just doesn’t change. OK, six from eight last weekend. Let’s finish with a flurry. The first two games of this round are sensational: Bulldogs v Cowboys (Thursday, August 25, 7.50pm, Belmore Sports Ground, Sydney): Great game to start the penultimate round. The Cowboys put the Warriors to the sword last weekend, while the Dogs fell to the Broncs. You get the feeling that if the Cows play to their potential, they win. However, the Dogs are at home. YLI believes the Cowboys have the title scent again. • Your Local Independent tips: Cowboys Storm v Broncos (Friday, August 26, 7.50pm, AAMI Park, Melbourne): Another blockbuster. Again, the Broncos are coming

back into form, but the Storm are on top of the ladder for a reason. Mentally the Storm players will be asking ‘Do we deserve to be here?’ While Brisbane’s mindset will be, ‘We can’t afford to lose this one’. Whoever can turn that thought pattern into a positive, wins. For example, if the Melbourne players run on thinking: ‘We are on top because we deserve to be’, then they win. • Your Local Independent tips: Storm Sea Eagles v Raiders (Saturday, August 27, 3pm, Brookvale Oval, Sydney): The Raiders have taken the baton off the Sharks as the nonheavyweight team who are flying home. They should notch another win here to keep their confidence on a high. • Your Local Independent tips: Raiders Titans v Panthers (Saturday, August 27, 5.30pm, Cbus Stadium, Gold Coast): Very interesting game. The Panthers could sneak into

fourth at the end of Round 26 if both the Cowboys and Broncos stall. The Titans meanwhile are still writing their season fairytale, which ends in a bold finals showing. The Gold Coast are at home in front of plenty of new believers. • Your Local Independent tips: Titans Sharks v Roosters (Saturday, August 27, 7.30pm, Southern Cross Group Stadium, Cronulla): OK, are the Sharks going to finally shake off their late season malaise against a team who refuse to acknowledge they are in 16th place. The Roosters have been in great form in recent weeks and can worsen Flanagan’s headache. • Your Local Independent tips: Sharks Warriors v Tigers (Sunday, August 28, 2pm, Mt Smart Stadium, Auckland): Both these teams are a mathematical chance of sneaking into the eight, which gives them a good reason to stay in the game on Sunday. The Tigers

have certainly lost their bite without Tedesco. The Warriors have gone back to old ways over the last couple of weeks, but should survive this one. • Your Local Independent tips: Warriors Knights v Rabbitohs (Sunday, August 28, 4pm, Hunter Stadium, Newcastle): Can the Knights pull one out of the bag before the curtain comes down on 2016? Unfortunately they can’t take a break because the Rabbits have finally hit some form. • Your Local Independent tips: Rabbitohs Eels v Dragons (Monday, August 29, 7pm, Pirtek Stadium, Parramatta): Final game of the round only matters to the die-hard fans. Both these teams are looking to 2017 and finalising who goes and who they might bring in for the next season. Flip a coin. • Your Local Independent tips: Dragons
