Our time to shine By SUE PATERICK
ON this Australia Day, Friday January 26, we should all unite to celebrate the fact we live in a wonderful country without wars or famine. The first verse of our national anthem, and let’s face it that is the only verse most of us know, really says it all. Australians all let us rejoice, For we are young and free; We’ve golden soil and wealth for toil; Our home is girt by sea. Not only is Australia Day a public holiday, always a great reason to celebrate, and a day many pick to become an Australian citizen, it is also a time to recognise those selfless individuals who give all to their local communities. The Macleay Valley’s Australia Day Ambassador, Joel Pilgrim, will join Mayor Liz Campbell in presenting the 2018 Australia Day Awards from 5pm on Australia Day Eve, Thursday January 25, at the Slim Dusty Centre in South Kempsey. Mr Pilgrim is the CEO of a mental health surf therapy charity known as the Waves of Wellness Foundation or WOW. Apart from announcing Kempsey’s Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year, Community Group of the Year and Volunteer of the Year, this event will also include a Welcome to Country and a citizenship ceremony. On Australia Day, Friday January 26, winners of the Crescent Head Citizen of the Year, Young Achiever and Sportsperson of the Year Awards will be announced at the Crescent Head Lions Club traditional barbecue breakfast. This event will be held at the Crescent Head Rotunda
in Baker Street from 7.30am and requires a gold coin donation. Residents and holiday makers at The Rocks will wake up on Australia Day to the delicious aroma of a barbeque courtesy of the South West Rocks Lions Club. Their free sausage sizzle, plus tea or coffee, will be held at the Horseshoe Bay Shelter Shed at the Horseshoe Bay Reserve from 7.30am to 10am. Mayor Campbell said residents and visitors to the area are welcome to attend the Awards Ceremony or any of the community celebrations. Like Kempsey, Port Macquarie will host their Australia Day Awards Ceremony on Thursday January 25. This event recognises locals who have gone above and beyond in serving their community and will be held at the Glasshouse in Clarence Street from 6pm. Port Macquarie-Hastings Mayor, Peta Pinson, said there were so many members of the community who contributed to building such a vibrant and supportive local culture who often went unnoticed for their efforts. “Council is proud to recognise those individuals and groups who have contributed greatly to our local community, and I look forward to meeting all of the fabulous award nominees and announcing the Awards recipients,” Mayor Pinson said. Port Macquarie, Camden Haven and Wauchope will celebrate Australia Day with breakfast barbeques, children’s games and live entertainment. Port’s Australia Day Ambassador, Liz Deep-Jones, and Mayor Pinson will attend official Australia Day Ceremonies and events across the region. Ms Deep-Jones is a journalist, TV Presenter, published author, senior producer and public speaker. • Continued Page 3

P&C turns ‘trash’ into treasure Antiques a fair way to boost school funds
By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC LOOKING to sell some antiques and help a local school? The Ocean View Antique Fair and Car Boot Sale is the place to go. The Hastings Secondary College Port Macquarie Campus P&C Association are putting on their first Antique Fair and Car Boot Sale and want stallholders and car-booters to join. “Antique fairs aren’t usually centrally located and there wasn’t going to be an antique fair in Port Macquarie this year, so we thought it would be the perfect opportunity to put one on,” explained Leanne Burbridge, President of the Hastings Secondary College Port Macquarie Campus P&C Association. “There was a big gap there for people who love to attend these shows, and also for those who sell antiques.” There’s no doubt the public will find some hidden gems from the antique traders, as well as some great bargains in the car boot sales.
“The antique traders really know their stuff, so you are bound to find something beautiful,” said Leanne. “The public will also find some really great bargains at the car boot sales. “We have around 30 stall sites and 100 car sites for people to hire for the day and anything that fits in the car, you can sell. Besides the hire of the site, we don’t take any money from people, so they can make as much profit as they like and sell things for what they wish.” Leanne says the fair will not only earn people some extra cash, but also de-clutter their homes. “There is a big push in the area for recycling and disposing of your rubbish responsibly and I think that the fair is a really good avenue for people to clear out their clutter and come along for the day, without having to open up their home and invite people into a garage sale,” she said. “There are a lot of people, and I’m one of them, who hold onto things because we want to get rid of it responsibly or we want to give it to someone who might be able to use it, and
sometimes truthfully, that can sometimes take a really long time. Why not bring that pile of stuff that has been sitting in the corner of your house and sell it from your car?” The P&C has high hopes of raising a few thousand dollars to go towards a new uniform shop for the school, costing roughly $6,000. “There are plans for the PCYC to put in a structure where our current uniform shop is, so we are raising money for a portable pod for our new uniform shop,” Leanne said. “We’re always trying to think outside the box in any fundraising events we’ve done. We did a modeling workshop in the past where we were building up kids’ confidence. It wasn’t glamour modeling so much, it was about feeling confident within yourself. We also help out a lot with school productions and taking care of catering and canteens at school events.” The inaugural Ocean View Antique Fair and Car Boot Sale will be held on Saturday February 17 at the Hastings Secondary College Port
Macquarie Campus in Owen Street. The event is for the whole family and will include a BBQ, food stalls, coffee and refreshments, as well as entertainment and activities for the kids. Whether you trade for a living or just want to clear out your clutter after Christmas, the fair has a place for you. Antiques will be trading inside the MPC and car boot sellers will be located on the lower oval - if you can fit it in your car, you can sell it at the fair. The P&C would also like to invite all community and not-for-profit groups to book a pitch in the community area to promote their organisation and services. Get in quick as spots are selling out. Sites are available for $90 for antique traders, $25 for Car Boot stallholders and no charge for community groups. Let’s talk about Aust Day
I COULDN’T agree more with rugby league legend Johnathan Thurston’s suggestion that we need a ‘national chat’ on the timing of Australia Day. The rhetoric from many politicians, especially those on the right-hand side of the fence, is wearing very thin. The suggestion that we should basically just suck it up and stay with the date we have now – January 26 – is a lazy thought path. In fact it is the classic, ‘She’ll be right, mate’, scenario. Well it is far from alright. As Thurston pointed out: “I think we need to have a national chat about it (Australia Day’s date) and I think Australians need to be educated on why some Indigenous Australians, Aboriginals and Torres Strait Islanders, aren’t fans of or aren’t associated with January 26. “I think Australians need to be educated on why they feel that way and know the actual history about our country. “I think once people do know the history of our country and where our culture has been and where our culture has come from today, a lot of people would have a different view on it. “Once we can have that chat and move forward and move forward as one nation and
one country.” The fact that Thurston is a very good footballer does not necessarily mean that he has the skill set to lead such a debate. However the more you listen to him, the more he comes across as a sensible, fair-minded Australian. He also knows what it is like to be part of a group of people whose claim on this land has been largely over-looked. I wonder how nonAboriginal people would feel if Australia Day was specifically placed in a day that was the anniversary of something that evoked sadness and misgivings. Remember, January 26 marks the anniversary of the 1788 arrival of the First Fleet of British ships at Port Jackson, New South Wales and the raising of the Flag of Great Britain at Sydney Cove by Governor Arthur Phillip. For many indigenous people it marked the start of a dramatic decline in their way of life. So, at least let’s start to have a genuine discussion. As Thurston suggests, let’s educate ourselves first and then speak. Too much of what is said on this topic comes from uninformed sources – on both sides of the debate. Let’s do something meaningful together. Name and address supplied

about the bloke’s club being alive and well late in 2017 and the amount of times I’ve been approached in the last 12 months for exactly that – sex on the side if I want the business or help in my business. How do I deal with it? I determined my line in the sand a long time ago. I choose not to cross that line, either way, no matter what. Did you read that? I choose not to be sexually harassed. If someone tries to cross my line in the sand I will tell them in which way they can go. You know – F@$K OFF – and if they are slow at getting the message I ask if they didn’t understand the part about the sex or the travel! What bothers me with the #MeToo campaign is the way it has been portrayed as some new plague within the entertainment industry and everyone is falling around in shock and horror about the latest salacious story, which they would be selling to said media. Sorry if I sound really sarcastic, but, for the females that are going to come out, share their horrid sexual harassment experiences from 20 years ago, can you please put some clothes on and stop dressing like porn stars? It will help us commoners to sympathise with you? Also, please don’t continue bleating about being forced into situations to further your career. The Hollywood casting couch has been notorious for decades. You willingly pursued a career in an industry that has a reputation for sleeping your way to the top. You chose to let someone have that control over you and your career. You didn’t speak out or walk away from the situation. Plain and simple - you sold yourself out.
Thumbs Up A HUGE thank you to the wonderful staff at Bunnings. Recently my two-year-old daughter was in the play area and had a fall hitting her head. The staff were just amazing, offering ice packs, cookies and a lolly. It’s nice to know people care and it meant the world to us.
Thumbs Down TO the lazy people who are too tired to take their rubbish home and dump it on the section of Pacific Drive between Ocean Drive and Kennedy Drive.

I’VE been wracking my brain trying to work out how to write this without offending too many people. Sorry folks. I’m just going say it as I see it! If you’re easily offended, it may be in your best interests to stop right now and read the Thumbs column. Last week, I touched on the #MeToo campaign and I really want to delve a bit deeper, based on my own experiences as a woman, fast approaching 55 and totally torn by this campaign. I’m torn because there are some legitimate cases of sexual harassment that will likely never come to the surface because of the media focussing on the entertainment industry and the pack of celebrities crawling over each other to tell the best story. To me it’s playing out like it should be included as a new category in all the industry awards nights – and the Gold Logie for most sexual harassment claims in 2018 goes to…? I’m not saying they haven’t been sexually harassed. I’m not saying ‘get over it’. In fact, I’m sure they have been and I’m 99 per cent certain that all of us, male and female can tell a story of sexual harassment of our own. I firmly believe in standing up against harassment of any kind - sexual, physical, mental, emotional - towards males or females, young or old. It doesn’t matter its abuse and it’s just wrong! I started working behind the bar, waitressing and running the bottle shop at the family hotel in NZ at 11 years of age in 1974. I have seen sexual harassment in all its forms, from a very young age. Over the years I’ve had to learn to fend for myself in situations that I could have ended up a victim of sexual harassment. I’ve lost count of the times I’ve been offered a big tip (aged 12-15), job, promotion or pay rise, advertising contracts in exchange for sexual favours over the years. Hell, I only wrote

Dog attacks in spotlight ... but habitat loss is koalas’ biggest threat
By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC KOALA conservationists are continuing their push to make dog attacks on koalas a focal point. The Port Macquarie-Hastings Council has recently trialed a voluntary 10-week dog training program for dogs in high koala attack areas, focusing on Oceanview Terrace, Swift Street and McLaren Drive in Port Macquarie and Ernest Street in Lake Cathie. “In the wild if a koala was being attacked it can simply climb up a tree, but it’s not the same for a koala in a backyard with a dog,” said G Henshaw from Living With Koalas. “When the koala becomes trapped in the dog’s environment, the dog will do anything to protect its environment, which may not have a tree for the koala to climb. Unfortunately there have been more reports of dog attacks on koalas recently in the area, and with the decline of koalas in general, it’s a problem that is worth addressing.” It is estimated, by Council, that there are now less than 1,600 koalas in the wild in the coastal area of Port Macquarie-Hastings. At a council meeting in December, the proposal of banning dogs from subdivision properties in koala environments was raised. “At the council meeting the residential development at Thrumster, Sovereign Hills, - a koala sensitive area - generated a heated discussion,” said Mr Henshaw. “The proposal was to support the banning of dogs from the sub-division, which was a first for the council. Although some of the council speakers admitted that banning dogs on its own won’t solve the problems facing koalas, it is one positive action that will show the ratepayers that this council is really concerned about the koalas and doing
One of our local koalas (Photo: Brenda Samo) everything it can to help with the conservation and regeneration of the species. “Although the proposal did not get through it was great news that the community is having these discussions and exploring all possible options to save our koalas.” Housing development throughout the area is at a record high with new sub-divisions being built across the region. “Habitat loss, without any doubt, is the main cause driving the local koala population to extinction,” Mr Henshaw said. “A chainsaw is much more effective than a bullet. Kempsey is set for Games baton ON Friday February 2, the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games (GC2018) Queen’s Baton Relay will arrive in Kempsey. Local residents Mark Morrison, Paul Phillips, Drew Walsh and former resident Leith Brodie are among those who have been honoured to carry the Queen’s Baton in Kempsey, bringing the excitement of the Games to our community. People are encouraged to line the streets and support our batonbearers with the relay starting its visit at St Paul’s College at 11.45am before making its way through Kempsey to finish at Riverside Park at 1pm. The community is welcome to bring their lunch to Riverside Park to share the spirit of the relay and the games. Mayor, Liz Campbell, said she is delighted that Kempsey will be hosting the GC2018 Queen’s Baton Relay. “Being selected as a host town is an exciting opportunity for Kempsey,” Cr Campbell said. “This is a great way to highlight and promote Kempsey to people in Australia and the world who have been following the Queen’s Baton extraordinary journey.” As part of this event, there will be rolling road closures between 11am and 1pm with the following roads being closed and/or having limited access for periods of time: • West Kempsey: Sea, Marsh, Tozer and Elbow Streets as well as restricted access to the Kempsey Railway Station; • Kempsey: Belgrave, Clyde, Forth, Smith, John and Verge Streets; • The Kempsey Traffic Bridge will also be briefly closed. Council is working with specialist traffic management staff and local emergency services to ensure the road closures are smoothly implemented. The Queen’s Baton will arrive on the Gold Coast for the Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony on April 4.

Bandbox strikes positive chord By SUE PATERICK IT seems the Bandbox Theatre’s re-opening in Kempsey these school holidays has touched a chord of fond nostalgia within the local community and several Councillors are listening. Owner of the South West Roxy Cinema at South West Rocks, Andrew Merdaco, told Your Local Independent that since re-opening the Bandbox business had been pretty good. And given the release of several awardwinning movies this summer, Andrew has decided to keep the Bandbox open on weekends throughout February. “People have been very supportive,” he said. “The Bandbox re-opening has attracted a market of people who loved the theatre when they were dating and were now bringing their grandchildren.” Andrew believes the Bandbox has air of retro elegance that people seem to really love. “It’s the only piece of Kempsey cinema history left and I didn’t realise how much people love it,” he said. “When customers leave the Bandbox having just seen the latest blockbuster movies in digital with a state-of-the-art sound system, they tell me how much they’d rather have the money spent on doing up the old theatre instead of building a new cinema.” And it seems the latest on-line poll supports this with 49.58 per cent of people polled wanting to invest in the Bandbox instead of a new fourscreen cinema above the Coles complex. Only 21.69 per cent voted to continue with the new cinema, 10.14 per cent didn’t think we needed a new cinema, 9.58 per cent thought a new cinema was okay just not so big, and 9.01 thought it should go head just not under the same funding model.
Above left: Since its re-opening this summer holidays Kempsey’s Bandbox Theatre has been well-supported. Above right: The proposed four-screen cinema in Kempsey’s CBD. Back in November last year Kempsey Shire Council (KSC) voted five to four to support the proposed Kempsey Cinema in the CBD and the allocation of $2 million in accumulated reserves to match $2 million in Federal Government grant funding. Under a new arrangement Council decided to enter into a Voluntary Planning Agreement (VPA) that would involve a one-off contribution and no further liability for the costs of constructing and operating the proposed cinema complex. Council is also waiving any development fees. This level of funding has created mixed feelings within the community, with many believing the money would be better spent on local infrastructure such as roads and sporting fields.
Councillors Bruce Morris, Leo Hauville and Dean Saul this month lodged a rescission motion. In short the rescission motion calls for any changes in the suggested draft VPA between KSC and (cinema developers) Gowings Bros be reviewed and supported by Councillors, prior to placing the document on public exhibition for 28 days. In the motion Councillors Morris, Hauville and Saul state not to do so would mean Council wasn’t acting with due diligence, especially considering placing the VPA on public exhibition was a statutory requirement. It is also important to these Councillors that all submissions made by the community should be considered by Council and provided to Councillors, whether they pertain to what is in the VPA or not, before a final determination on
the cinema project. The motion also mentions the ‘very scant regard’ for the impact of a new cinema on the South West Roxy Cinema and asks if this potentially leaves Council open to accusations of discriminatory practice. The results of the on-line polls that show a large percentage of the community would be happier if the money was spent on doing up the Bandbox are also listed in the motion. “The proposed Gowings Cinema issue has certainly caused much anger and angst in the community,” Councillor Saul said. “The anger stems from the frustration that Council is not listening to the majority of the ratepayers and residents who oppose the $2 million dollar donation of ratepayers’ funds to a major corporation.”
Some bushwackers have a bloody past Down Under my
I WAS reading a book about Denny Day, the man who brought to justice the transgressors from the Myall Creek Massacre (look for my book Massacre at Myall Creek in book stores). I came upon a sentence that said: “Such hunting parties (killing aborigines) were called drives or bushwhacks, as much a sport as riding to hounds”. Later in the same book appears: “Two gentlemen entered the room, dragged the girl out and beat in her head at the door. The blood was still there when grandfather came home.” So in the eyes of some people bushwhacker wasn’t a very pleasant word. I remembered that bushwhack had been used often when I was a young person, but I’m sure it had a different meaning. Bushwhack is used in Australia and the USA. My Oxford Australian National Dictionary says it means to work in the country, clearing the ground to fell timber. Merriam Webster says it means “to attack suddenly”.
LAURIE BARBER
My big dictionary says the word means “to beat the bush; to attack or kill in the manner of a bushwhacker”. It then goes on to say that combatants in the American Civil War took to the woods and were variously regarded as patriotic guerillas (or guerrillas, take your pick) or as bushrangers or bush fighters. Even Davy Crockett had a go at bushwhacking when he said about a stump “and began to bushwhack in the most approved style”. The original meaning of bushwhack seems to have died out. Now it seems to relate to a person who resides
in the bush and carried out bush duties. Craig Carver, writing in A History of English in Its Own Words, says that the Macquarie Dictionary had 67 words containing bush. I didn’t count them, but rather accepted Carver’s count. However, the Oxford Australian National Dictionary in several pages did have many definitions of bush, including bush ballad, bush bed, bush boy, bush work, bush horse, bush hospitality, bushy hotel, bush shower, bush song and several other definitions of bush. Then there are bush capital, another name for Canberra, bush brotherhood, bush lawyer, bushfire, bush bible, bushranger, bush telegraph or bushed. And the list goes on. Carver said a bush baby, or a baby conceived in the American bush, was sometimes humorously called a bushwhacker. In Australia and New Zealand the meaning of bushwhacked has changed to an unskilled labourer, working in the bush of course. In 1907 WH Koebel writing Return of Joe in
New Zealand said “cutting good terbaccer as if you was bushwacking”. He couldn’t spell either. In 1929 PR Stephenson said only a few lived on after the white men came to whack the bush. Then in 1977 J Carter in All Things Wild said “he did most of his bush-whacking with a glass in one hand and his foot on the bar rail”. Xavier Herbert in Capricornia said newspapers were only fit for the purpose “we bushwhackers use ‘em for when we’ve read ‘em”. The late Stephen Murray-Smith said a bushwhacker was one lacking in social graces. The word was a recent one in this country, having previously been used in the American Civil War to refer to deserters who raided homes. “In New Zealand, the word is used of someone who clears the bush, especially an axeman”, he said. The late Stephen Murray-Smith preferred the spelling bushwhacker to bushwacker. lauriebarber.com; lbword@midcoast.com.au

Familiar faces in Tenors’ line-up By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC THERE will be a strong local flavour when the Australian Tenors perform in Port Macquarie in February. In fact the Mid North Coast will be welcoming back two of its locals at the ‘Friends For Life’ Australian Tenors tour. Murray Mayday from Taree and Roy Weissensteiner from Port Macquarie say they are excited to come back home. “Any time I can get back to my home town of Port Macquarie I do so,” said Roy Weissensteiner. “I am so pleased to have the opportunity to work again for the Australian Tenors, and the icing on the cake is that I get to perform in my home town.” Weissensteiner moved to Port Macquarie as a baby and attended Port Macquarie Primary School and Westport High School. Mayday arrived in Taree as a two-year-old with his surgeon father. The family then moved
The Australian Tenors (Murray Mayday centre) will be hitting the high notes in Port Macquarie in February. Inset: Roy Weissensteiner. to Wingham on a small property during Murray’s high school years and then to Port Macquarie for ten years. Murray attended Taree West Public School, and Taree High School. “We travel a lot with The Australian Tenors and my own career so I try to get back as often as possible because I love the lifestyle of the area,” said Murray. “It’s so beautiful and peaceful.” The Australian Tenors are made up of five talented musicians in their own right - Mayday, Lorenzo Rositano, Matthew Reardon, David McKenzie, and John Donohoe. For this tour, fate has brought Weissensteiner back home from where he now resides in the UK, as he replaces Reardon who is currently with Opera Australia. “I started to sing in school musicals at Port
Primary and Westport High,” said Roy. “I performed in a musical for Port Players in 1987 and was a member of the Hastings Bicentennial singers in 1988 which performed all over the Hastings Region.” The Tenors have performed nationally and internationally for presidents, heads of state and Australian Prime Ministers. All of the tenors have performed extensively with Opera Australia, Australian and International Symphonies and Philharmonic Orchestras, but performing for family and friends will always be a favourite. “I am really looking forward to catching up with local friends and family as well as friends and family who are travelling from all over to
come and see me perform,” said Roy. The talented singers will bring romance, excitement, warmth and humour to their performance at the Glasshouse. Audiences can expect to hear the very popular ‘Waltzing Matilda’, ‘Australia My Country’, and ‘I am Australian’, to name a few. They will cover all genres of classical tenor and popular tunes from hit music theatre productions. The ‘Friends For Life’ tour reaches the Glasshouse, Port Macquarie, on Saturday February 17 from 2pm. Tickets are $85 per person for adults, $77 for members, $79 for concessions, and $70 for under 18’s. Visit www.glasshouse.org.au or call 02 6581 8888 to book tickets.

smacked!
All the Good stuff in our Community
Pines show what we can do IMAGINE Port Macquarie’s headlands devoid of trees! In the 1940s there were only a few Norfolk Island Pines standing, soaring up into the sky on our town’s headlands. Something happened to change all this. In 1948, nineteen men (several of them Christians) formed Port Macquarie’s first Rotary Club. These prominent businessmen, led by Port Macquarie chemist and Mayor, Allan Ryan, began to transform Port Macquarie’s landscape and bring great blessings to the local community over the next 70 years. The first project the infant Rotary Club took on was to clear bushes and scrub from the ground where the local airstrip was to be built. In the early 1950s the Rotarians planted dozens of Norfolk Island Pines in Clarence Street and along the headland and foreshores. Today these towering trees stand as monuments to Rotary. During the past 70 years, some 380 Rotarians have carried out more than 224,000 hours in

community service. They have raised hundreds of thousands of dollars (which when matched with Government and Council Grants) has contributed millions of dollars to the local community - purchased equipment for the local hospital, (and Sydney hospitals), the local swimming pool, Rotary Park, the astronomical observatory, historic cemetery gates, local scouts and guides, surf clubs, emergency services, schools, students, Rotary Lodge, Flagstaff Hill and myriads of other community projects have benefited. I joined Rotary 33 years ago. As a Christian I wanted to be part of something that would
bring great benefit to our community and go much further than our local Churches could go. I have enjoyed the comradery and the benefits of working alongside talented and knowledgeable people for something worthwhile. I have been thankful to God at seeing others blessed. One of the things I have loved most about being in Rotary is seeing how we can impact the world. ‘Little- old me’ can’t do much on my own, but working alongside 1.2 million Rotarians we can change the world. One example that Rotary has led is the eradication of polio throughout the world. I am in the process of writing a book on the Port Macquarie Rotary Club – SEVENTY YEARS OF ‘SERVICE ABOVE SELF’. (See advertisement on this page). I would love to hear from anyone with any old pictures and stories of Rotary in action locally, especially from the 1950s – 60s. The book will be launched on May 23 at the 70th Anniversary Celebration Dinner at Panthers.
Can you imagine Port without the Pines?
Chinese Christians) and Churches are growing in many countries around the world. Young people from South Korea (42.5% of South Koreans are ‘born again’ Christians) are purchasing one-way tickets and travelling into other countries seeking to share the good news of Jesus (even into North Korea). There are great moves of God in Africa and South America with millions turning to follow Jesus Christ. Even in America many are struggling with the rantings of President Trump on Twitter. However many Christian leaders believe Trump, even though he is a brash billionaire, who has been twice divorced and owned a casino, is the man God has raised-up to bring hope and a future
for the USA and the world. A Christian leader prophesied in 2015 that God had chosen Trump to be the next President and his election would be part of a global awakening that would lead to a restoration of Biblical Israel. Note – Trump’s call for Jerusalem to be Israel’s capital. In Australia there are some amazing stories around our country of what God is doing in reviving communities and Aussies turning back to Jesus. You won’t read or see these stories in the media, unless someone kills someone. So be encouraged. Jesus said: “Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God, trust also in me.” (John 14:1) Turn to Jesus in 2018 and find your way to a local Church and discover some hope in 2018.
Amid the gloom there are plenty of signs of hope for 2018
STUMP THE PREACHER With Pastor Kerry Medway
QUESTION: Kerry, I am struggling. All I see is sadness and tragedy in the world. I have stopped reading newspapers and listening to and watching the news, as I find it too depressing. Is there any hope for the future? Answer: I too get very discouraged when I
hear what is happening around the world and even sometimes in our local neighbourhood. However, I want to shout across the pages of this paper and say loudly – yes, there is hope! There are some exciting things happening, but sadly often ‘good news’ doesn’t make the news. Let me share some things that have occurred recently that may bring hope. In December 2017, the President of the Ukraine gave permission for the Gospel of Jesus Christ to be preached in the Ukraine. Hundreds of thousands of people walked the streets of Kiev in celebration of this new religious freedom. The Church is growing in China (10% of the population, which is estimated to be 13.8 million

How to get your business LinkedIn According to a recent social media marketing “industry report, LinkedIn has now surpassed Facebook
“
as the number 1 most important social media platform for B2B (Business to Business) marketers
BUSINESS people are being urged to review their social media strategies to ensure that they have a LinkedIn company page to market their business. ETC’s Business Programs Manager Kevin Riddell said LinkedIn is the largest professional network in the world, with more than 500 million users in more than 200 countries. “LinkedIn is no longer a site just for resumes and CVs. Unlike other social media platforms, it is geared solely around creating professional and business connections. We are finding that businesses that know how to market on LinkedIn are reaping big results,” Mr Riddell said. ETC is delivering a series of LinkedIn workshops to help small business operators learn how to optimise LinkedIn to market their businesses. Mr Riddell said the workshops will cover the following topics: • Optimising profiles for better results (both personal profiles and company pages); • Making connections - who with, how-to and best practices; • Newsfeed posts, interactions and content; • Personal branding and business branding as it relates to LinkedIn; • Searching - how to get the best results, understanding search strings and setting up search alerts; • Advanced tools, and paid LinkedIn features. “According to a recent social media marketing industry report, LinkedIn has now surpassed
Facebook as the number 1 most important social media platform for B2B (Business to Business) marketers,” Mr Riddell said. “The research showed that 80% of B2B leads come from LinkedIn, and 94% of B2B marketers use LinkedIn to distribute content.” ETC’s LinkedIn workshops for small business will be held in the following locations: • Port Macquarie – Friday 16 February, Rydges, 11.00am – 2.00pm; • Coffs Harbour – Thursday 8 March, C.ex, 11.00am – 2.00pm. The workshops will be presented by LinkedIn expert, Anna McAfee. “Anna is an experienced, independent LinkedIn trainer who is passionate about helping local businesses leverage off the power of LinkedIn. She is so passionate about the platform that she set up local LinkedIn meet-ups, which is a concept that has now been copied globally,” Mr Riddell said. “We encourage local business operators to take time out of their day to attend these workshops. They will learn how to use LinkedIn as a business development tool and gain customised, hands-on, practical advice.” For more information and to book visit etcltd. com.au/events-workshops Or contact Kevin Riddell at kevin.riddell@ etcltd.com.au

Coach service survey STATE MATTERS
COMMUNITY To Have Its Say On New Service To Connect The Regions: Local residents are being invited to have their say on a new trial of a coach service between Port Macquarie and Tamworth to begin later this year. NSW TrainLink is looking at ways to better connect regional centres throughout the state through a series of trial coach services. Public transport options have been limited for people to move between Port Macquarie and Tamworth and NSW TrainLink is looking to address that via a new direct coach link. There’s a potential for Port Macquarie tourism and retail industries to benefit from an uplift in visitors and at the same time gives the local community a chance to escape to the bush or to visit friends and family in the Tamworth area. I encourage people who are
interested in this proposed service to provide feedback to help NSW TrainLink design the service so that you can make the best use of it. The options being considered include a weekend service, or a weekday service. The route would connect other towns such as Kootingal, Moonbi, Bendemeer, Walcha, Long Flat. The coach would also connect with train services at Wauchope. Hard copies of the survey are available at the Wauchope Train Station. Community members with enquiries about the trials can contact the NSW TrainLink team on 9232 9531 or email
NSWTrainLinkcommunities@ transport.nsw.gov.au Submissions are open until next Wednesday, January 31. Nominations Open For NSW Training Awards: Local employers and trainers are being encouraged to nominate outstanding local apprentices, trainees and organisations for the 2018 NSW Training Awards. Nominations for the regional round of the NSW Training Awards are now until March 16. The NSW Training Awards are a chance to recognise and congratulate the best apprentices, trainees and teachers in our Vocational Education and Training (VET) sector. I know we have many deserving candidates so I urge employers and VET trainers to nominate an individual or organisation for an award. This is a chance to show your pride in their efforts.
AFTER the previous week’s race was abandoned due to the gale force winds, the Port Macquarie Sailing Clubs double header last weekend could not have been sailed on a nicer day. The 2nd race of the summer series in the morning was sailed in a lovely little Easterly with the last of the run-in tide, and the afternoon’s 4th heat of the club championship was sailed in a slightly stronger breeze with the tide now running out and strengthening as the race progressed. In the catamarans in the morning race, Tony Kuhn on Stella won on yardstick ahead of Dave Winter on Spica and Kelly Miller on Hummer. Terry Howard in Ratz won the morning race for the monohulls on yardstick. Second place was a dead
heat between Tony Walker in Deep Purple and newcomer Craig Lee in Leeway, who in turn were only 11 seconds ahead of 4rh placed Simon Gandy and Steve Couch in Voyager. The finishing order for the rest of the monohull fleet was Norman Broomhall and Allan Pogonowski in John Haldane, Sharon Carney and Stuart Symons in Jupiter, Elsa Gandy and Jaiden Burke in Flying Fish, and Steve Bohlsen and Scott Witchard in Splash Dance. The afternoon’s Club Championship race for catamarans was almost two 2 boat races on yardstick. Stella raced Jack Corthals on Harpic for the win, and further back in the fleet, Hummer fought Spica all race to take 3rd. Stella and Harpic also took the first 2 handicap
positions, but Spica managed to get the 3rd position over Hummer. Paul Robertson and Warren Sykes in Flembouyant were first on yardstick in the monohull division in the Club Championship, beating Ratz by 10 seconds. Voyager was 3rd ahead of Stuart Symons and Andrew Hurrell in Big Bang, Deep Purple, Leeway, Splash Dance, and Jupiter, now with Jane Cooper crewing for Sharon. Voyager won on handicap ahead of Big Bang, Jupiter who were 3 seconds ahead of Ratz, Deep Purple, Flembouyant, and Leeway who was only 8 seconds ahead of Splash Dance. Next Sunday is the 3rd race of the summer series starting with a handicap start at 2.00pm. Rob Barwick is rostered on duty.

Golfers getting ‘sun wise’ Frederickton a part of Cancer Council promotion
By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC THE dangers of the sun are only too real for members of the Frederickton Golf Club. The Cancer Council NSW’s program ‘Improve Your Long Game’ is helping local clubs across the Mid North Coast to reduce their members’ skin cancer risk by using sun protection every time they play. Frederickton Golf Club however has already been on board for years. “We’ve been doing this skin cancer campaign every year for about four years at our club,” said Les Snape, Vice President of the Frederickton Golf Club. “It’s so important to us that our members have the right equipment out there to protect them from the sun. We’ve always got the sunscreen out there at the very first tee waiting for our members, and then at different spots along the course. We take it very seriously.” According to the Cancer Council NSW, men over the age of 40 are 1.5 times more likely to be diagnosed with melanoma, and around twice as likely to die from it, compared to women of a similar age. 21% of men in NSW report that they never use sun protection compared to 13% of women. “We have a lot of older men playing at our golf course and they wear hats and 95% of them use the sunscreen provided, and some even bring their own,” said Mr Snape. “They are very aware of the potential damage the sun can do. “Unfortunately though, you don’t know where you could get sun cancer from. You could get it from back in your younger life playing sports outside or growing up on a farm. Luckily

we never hear the older men here at Frederickton saying ‘Oh, it’s too late for us’, or any other negative comments about sun protection.” Australia has among the highest rates of melanoma in the world and like many outdoor sports, golfers spend long hours in the sun with minimal shade with highly reflective UV from
surfaces like the grass, sand, and water. The Cancer Council NSW says that skin cancer can be preventable by applying and reapplying sunscreen, wearing a broad brimmed hat, wearing long-sleeved shirts, wearing sunglasses, and standing under the shade when possible. Mr Snape says the best time to start protecting
yourself is right now. “The young golfers here are also pretty sun aware. I think the campaigns on the television have really made them aware of the damage the sun can do,” he said. “When we were young, you didn’t worry about it because there wasn’t a lot of talk about sun damage and it’s only in the last 10 years or so that it’s really sort of come to light, and clearly it’s working.” South West Rocks Country Club and Frederickton Golf Club are among the 100 plus golf clubs across NSW participating in the ‘Improve Your Long Game’ Program in 2018, making sure their members are protected from the sun.
