Pinson seeks city’s vote “

I am as committed now as I was at the September, 2016, election to represent our community as mayor

PROMINENT local businesswoman Peta Pinson will seek the city’s top job at the July 29 Port Macquarie-Hastings Council mayoral by-election. Pinson this week told Your Local Independent that it was time ‘for a change’. “I believe it is time for a change in our council and I stand again as a mayoral candidate to assist in making that change. I look forward to the upcoming campaign,” she said. The by-election has been forced on local ratepayers following the recent shock resignation of Mayor Peter Besseling to pursue a business opportunity. Besseling was elected for his second term as mayor at the local government elections just seven months ago. At those elections he recorded 57.63 per cent of the vote in a solid win over the two other then mayoral candidates, Pinson (29.29 per cent) and Sharon Griffiths (13.08 per cent). Pinson, whose election slogan is ‘Your Voice – Your Choice’, says she would lead a more transparent council. “In this upcoming by-election I am offering the ratepayers and residents of the Port Macquarie Hastings region a Mayor who is committed to giving our community an honest and transparent Council,” she said. “Should I be elected on July 29, as your Mayor I will ensure that the community is not closed off from its council. I will ensure that all decisions made by me in the council chamber are responsible and in the best interests of our residents and ratepayers. “I am as committed now as I was at the September, 2016, election to represent our community as mayor. “During the 2016 election I campaigned on a platform of stopping Port MacquarieHastings Council plan to increase our rates by a staggering 52.4%. “Throughout my campaign I was accused by many of scaremongering and lying about a rate rise.

Former Mayor Peter Besseling

Local businesswoman and mayoral candidate Peta Pinson “The then mayor publicly stated in the media that there were no plans for a rate rise and that it would be a matter for the newly elected council. “After the election and as I predicted, the new Council voted to apply to IPART for a special rate variation to raise the community’s rates. “Earlier this month, the Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal (IPART) released a 23 page document titled Port Macquarie-Hastings Council’s application for a special variation for 2017-18.

“This document outlined the determination behind their decision to approve a rate increase on our community as applied for by the council. Most importantly the May 2017 report stated on page 4 the following; “Port Macquarie-Hastings Council applied to increase its general income by 5.39% in 2017-18, consisting of; • A 3.89% increase to maintain and renew the Council’s road network, and

BLOCK SPLITTERS SPECIAL PRICE 30 Ton with

$1,695

motor

• The rate peg of 1.5% “This contrasts with the Council’s proposal submitted for the Fit for the Future (FFTF) assessment conducted in 2015. At that time, the Council proposed a cumulative increase of 52.4% over 5 years from 2017-18, including the rate peg. “The truth was that our council … was caught out by my campaign which stopped the excessive rate increase.” Pinson and her husband Craig own local business Mid Coast Road Services (MCRS), which recently won a four-year legal stoush with the local council. The dispute was centred over the termination of the local company’s contract, by council, after MCRS laid bitumen on a 600m stretch of road at Lake Cathie on Ocean Drive between Miala Street and Houston Mitchell Drive. Council prepared the site and MCRS laid bitumen which later showed signs of failure. Peta Pinson came to Port Macquarie as a small child before her parents moved to Sydney. Her grandparents established the Riverlodge Caravan Park at Blackman’s Point in the early ‘70s. She would often return to the region to holiday with her grandparents. She and Craig decided to move to the King Creek/Wauchope area to raise their family – a son and daughter - who were schooled at Wauchope and later at St Columba. (Your Local Independent will profile all mayoral candidates as they nominate for the up-coming by-election.)

LETTER WEEK OF THE

Sandy Mackenzie Sandy Mackenzie

All letters sent in must include your address and phone number and be under 350 words.

Kempsey’s plan a flight of fantasy I AM writing to confirm some information stated previously, regarding the proposal for increasing flying activity at Kempsey Airport by Aust International Aviation College. As stated earlier the proposed additional flight activity of 27,000 movements is information proposed by the applicant Aust International Aviation College. The movements are over a calendar year operating 6am to midnight 365 days a year. This represents a significant increase compared to closer larger airports such as Coffs Harbour and Port Macquarie. These facts are clear requests made by the college in

One man’s opinion IT’S unfortunate that the Independent has given ex-councillor Adam Roberts a platform to spruik his personal opinions and to attack his former colleagues on the council. I’m not necessarily a fan of all the decisions made by the council but using the paper to pull apart every decision made by council smacks of bitterness and possibly regret at not

MOUs and DAs made to Kempsey Council and any claim to them not being factual can be substantiated at the council. The disputed details regarding Port Macquarie Airport not having a tower was an indicator implying Port Macquarie’s facilities were far more extensive and up to date compared to Kempsey regarding air traffic monitoring and tracking. The fact that an aircraft can only be measured one at one time might be correct however having that noise (drone) as a constant 18 hours a day 365 days a year is unacceptable. I reiterate, multiply an individual

aircraft droning in the air day and night by 27,000 times throughout the whole region. Many of the pilots, hangar owners, operators, airport users along with the majority of landowners around the airport have issues with this proposal. Pilots have voiced that the airport cannot manage that quantity of traffic, indeed it will create a precariously dangerous situation. Some of the pilots and hangar owners spoke at the meeting held by the Joint Regional Planning Panel voicing these concerns back on March 15, 2017. The Panel elected to suspend making a decision until

a more comprehensive and accurate study on noise pollution, chemical contamination, traffic issues and other environmental issues were to be studied. Another recent revelation is: Kempsey councillors have rejected a proposal that the AIAC College loan Kempsey Council $500,000 to improve and increase the fuel facility at the airport. The College also quoted to build this construction. This quite clearly reeks of conflicts of interest on behalf of council as well as the college. Glen Ravenscroft Temagog

having been more effective when a member. The editor might consider providing a more balanced approach to opinion rather than that of one man which could be construed as the opinion of your paper. Also labelling Adam with the redundant title of ‘Former Councillor, Port Macquarie Hastings Council’ seems strange and unnecessary. Call his article what it is, one

man’s one-eyed opinion! Gary Cuttell Port Macquarie

The esteemed position of Mayor demands the best person not the most popular. Our council is now being faced with a flawed system. If council had elected its own Mayor, Peter Besselings resignation would have simply required a by-election for his vacancy, followed by an election within council for its new Mayor. THE highway and the large roundabout coming into Port Macquarie is an absolute disgrace. Litter along the side of the road and everywhere so overgrown especially the roundabout. Does the Mayor of this town not see this? Isn’t he/she concerned what the visitors think driving in. He/she should take pride in the town.

Thumbs Up TO Port Macquarie-Hastings Council for the clever idea of the solid white line through to Ocean Drive/Koala Street round-a-bout, inbound, allowing a smoother and safer passage through. It certainly improves the congestion of the past. Perhaps Hastings River Drive/Park Street could be looked at too?

Thumbs up TO the people of Willawarrin who turn up on Anzac Day 80-90 people for the Dawn commemoration and the same for the 9am. It makes it all worthwhile. The same small village has raised enough money to do major works on the War Memorial. Many, many thanks.

Bugger! I stuffed up last week when I was researching for my column. I picked up the wrong info for the local government act and mistakenly cited the South Australian Local Government Act instead of the NSW Local Government Act 1993. A big thanks to Craig Swift-McNair for bringing this to my attention – I was mortified; so please accept my apologies. The lesson to be learnt…don’t always rely on google, especially in the middle of the night when you are overtired and trying to research, to write to a deadline! Now that we are in by-election mode, and will be for the next 10 weeks… (yes, when this is over we will be facing SPRING!) I think it is timely to do a bit of housekeeping and set some boundaries. Currently we have three candidates standing for the position of Mayor – Cr Rob Turner, Cr Sharon Griffith and Peta Pinson. Just so we are all clear – each candidate has been offered the same advertising opportunities to date, each candidate will be given the same editorial opportunities over the course of the campaign period and will be profiled prior to the July 29 election. It is not my problem if candidates do or don’t advertise or if they do not meet our deadlines when given a right of reply. We’d love community input and invite readers to submit questions for the candidates to newsdesk@ ylinews.com.au or drop them in to 3/60 Lord St, we will print as many responses as possible. Now! Where’s my popcorn?

I HAVE never been a supporter of the popular (public) election of Mayor. It should not be a popularity contest. The councillors as a group are the best ones to decide who should be their leader and not have someone foisted on them by the public.

And Cejay makes it a record “

I have great confidence in her riding ability, but it’s only natural to be worried about your daughter making her riding debut

By NEIL ARCHER

PETER Graham is one of the most experienced jockeys in NSW, but admits to rare pre-race nerves when his daughter, Cejay, made her riding debut - and put the family into the record books - at last Sunday’s Port Macquarie meeting. The 18-year-old Cejay rode at the meeting with her older brother Jesse, 21, and Peter - the first time in Australian racing history that a father, son and daughter had ridden at the same race program. Cejay and Jesse are both apprenticed to Port Macquarie trainer John Sprague while Peter is one of the state’s most experienced riders, known as the ‘Cups King’ after his many successes in country cups. Peter has ridden in more than 15,000 races and notched more than 1900 races wins, including last year’s Grafton Cup on Rednav and multiple victories in races like the Kempsey Cup (five wins). But Sunday’s meeting at Port Macquarie was a special, if rather nervous, experience for the 30-year veteran. “I must admit I was a bit nervous with Cejay making her riding debut,” said Peter. “I have great confidence in her riding ability, but it’s only natural to be worried about your daughter making her riding debut - it’s a dangerous sport. “But I was much more nervous than Cejay she was pretty calm really.” On paper, Cejay looked to have a strong chance of riding at least one winner from her two debut rides for her boss John Sprague Unique Miss in the second race and Jemily in the fourth event. Unique Miss, the $3.40 favourite, settled back in the field after a tardy start and ran on late to finish fourth to the Marc Quinn-trained Imposition. Her father rode outsider Io’s Orbit in the same race and finished just behind Ceejay and Unique Miss.

A historic moment at Port Macquarie last Sunday when Cejay, Peter and Jesse Graham became the first father, son and daughter to ride at the same race meeting. (Photo: Trackside Photography) Jemily also had plenty of support in the betting ring to run the $3.60 favourite, but faded to finish seventh to the Neil Godbolt-trained Morning Fare after leading well into the straight.

“Unique Miss missed the start and got well back, but Jemily led clearly into the straight and gave a big sight which gave me a huge thrill,” said Peter.

Jesse had two rides at the meeting and did not ride a winner either, but Peter did land the fifth race aboard the Grant Posser-trained Cheljoe ($3.60). Peter Graham said Sunday was a proud day for his family to have achieved a unique place in Australian racing history. “Although I was nervous for Cejay, it was a very special day for us,” he said. “Cejay has been involved in pony club since she was young and decided a few years ago she wanted to follow her brother and me into racing. She’s had a lot of great help and support along the way to get to this point and rode in about 30 barrier trials before she made her debut on Sunday. “It was a bit tougher when I was an apprentice - you didn’t have to ride in trials back then - so the support the apprentices get these days before they start riding is terrific. “Obviously I’ve given her a lot of advice, but other people - especially Malcolm Fitzgerad (Racing NSW apprentice mentor), John Sprague, stewards and other jockeys have been a great help to Cejay.” Cejay is likely to have her next rides at this Sunday’s Gunnedah meeting. “At this stage, she’s just going to go along quietly but she certainly has talent and I don’t think it’ll be too long before she rides that first winner,” said Peter.

We will have a grand parade through the streets of Port Macquarie along the beach front and down past the Glasshouse. “It will be quite spectacular. You’d probably get 1000 bikes on a ride down the main street of Port Macquarie.

Ulysses roar into Hastings By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC EVERYONE, let’s get ready to rumble. Australia’s largest social motorcycle club – for people over the age of 40 - is in town this week. The Ulysses Motorcycle Club will be based in Wauchope, the first official ‘Motorcycle Friendly Town’ in New South Wales, and will be part of events across the Mid North Coast. The club will be bringing in over 2000 members from around Australia for their 34th Annual General Meeting. “There will be about 1400 motorcycles,” said Robert Johns, Event Director from Wauchope. The members of the club will be camping at Wauchope Showground where there will also be events taking place. “Wauchope Showgrounds is the main venue,” said Mr Johns. “We’ve got an enormous tent that fits about 2000 people with tables and chairs and a bar area and a dance floor. It’s about the size of a football field. We’ve also got quite a number of smaller tents that will have motorcycle manufacturers and suppliers. We will also have The Lions Club canteen at the showground.” Each year club members from around Australia and overseas travel to a location for the club’s AGM, which has turned into a major event, held over several days. The events include involvement by major motorcycle manufacturers and suppliers providing trade displays and test rides of the latest machinery. However, the greatest spectacle is the Grand Parade, taking place this year through Port Macquarie’s CBD. “We will have a grand parade through the streets of Port Macquarie (on Saturday) along the beach front and down past the Glasshouse. It will be quite spectacular,” Mr Johns said. “You’d probably get 1000 bikes on a ride down the main street of Port Macquarie. “We have a lot of events happening during the week. The first real night was on Tuesday night – the meet and greet - and on the Saturday

The Wauchope showgrounds is ‘Ground Zero’ for the Ulysses Motorcycle Club’s gathering this week night we’ve got the Governor’s ball. Both events are both based around a convict theme so people will wear apparel that they used to wear in those days. “During the week, all week, we’ve got test rides on all the motorbikes and there’ll be about 90 different motorcycles that people can take for a test drive and have a little fun on them.” The Ulysses Motorcycle Club is proud to be the largest social club of its type in Australia, and it’s no wonder why it’s so popular. “It’s popular because of what people make it,” explained Mr Johns. “You meet people one year and you get to know them pretty well when you live side by side for a week in a tent and then you see them in 12 month’s time, and over the years you really look forward to catching up with these people.” Be sure to check out the events taking place from May 22-28 including the Grand Parade on Saturday, May 27, along Pacific Drive and Port Macquarie’s CBD. Please note that participation in the parade is restricted to Ulysses Club members who are registered for the 2017 Annual General Meeting event. For more info about the event or for the program visit http://agm2017.ulyssesclub.org

Let’s make this Friday a fatality-free day TOMORROW (Friday, May 26) is Fatality Free Friday and Australians everywhere are working together to improve road safety. This week the Mid North Coast will be welcoming literally thousands of motorcyclists to its roads as apart of the Ulysses Motorcycle Club’s Annual General Meeting. And what better time than to also welcome Fatality Free Friday, a campaign that encourages safety on the road. The Ulysses members encourage each other to ride safely every day of the year by watching out for themselves and each other. “Look out for yourself and keep an eye on everyone else because they are all out to get you!” warns Robert Johns, AGM Event Director of Ulysses Motorcycle Club. “There’s a risk to everything, motorcycles have a risk just like anything else, so just be careful and enjoy it.” While many people often avoid riding

motorcycles because they are concerned about the danger to themselves, there’s no stopping the Ulysses members from gliding down the open roads. “Just about everyone in the club has known someone that has been injured,” says Mr Johns. “But you could get injured from anything, not just from riding a motorcycle. It’s just the fun and the thrill of riding motorcycles, if you get out on the open road on a nice day, there’s nothing better than that.” The Fatality Free campaign started in 2007 and has continued to expand its operation and is now Australia’s only national community based road safety program. It takes on complex road safety issues, however, the aim is to simply have zero deaths for just one day, eliminating the day’s toll of 5.3 deaths to zero. Wiggly way to recycle “

It’s about teaching them something worthwhile and making a positive contribution

MID North Coast correctional officer Louise Bud isn’t afraid to bury her hands in a pile of wriggling worms– and now she is encouraging school kids to do the same. With the help of some female inmates, the Mid North Coast Correctional Centre’s resident green thumb has been breeding worms for donation to local schools. Ms Bud said the initiative had already introduced students from Aldavilla Primary School and Green Hill Public School to concepts of recycling and maintaining worm farms. “During my time at Mid North Coast I’ve been able to restore the worm farms there, so it has been a really great experience to visit schools and pass that knowledge onto their environmental teams,” Ms Bud said. “Some of the kids can be quite fearful of handling the worms, but once they overcome that you can see how much they get out of it. “For me it’s not only about breaking down barriers and connecting with these kids, it’s about teaching them something worthwhile and making a positive contribution to the community.” As part of the initiative, some of the centre’s male inmates are designing and constructing a worm farm for Green Hill Public School out of materials donated by the Kempsey community. The project will form part of a welding

NBN has arrived

RELIABLE, affordable, high-speed NBN broadband services are on the way for Port Macquarie residents, with NBN Co set to switch on the new network for 3,100 homes and businesses in coming days. Nationals Member for Cowper Luke Hartsuyker recently inspected one of the first NBN nodes to be completed, which will soon be delivering services to local residents. “This is an exciting next step for broadband services in Port Macquarie,” Mr Hartsuyker said. “Six months after the start of construction, the first 3,100 homes and businesses will be able to start connecting to the NBN network at the end of this month. “Another 34,500 premises in the Port Macquarie-Hastings region will progressively make the switch to the NBN network over the next year. “I know there are many people in Port Macquarie with poor internet connections who have been eagerly awaiting the switch on of the NBN network.”

Radio funding CANBERRA CONNECTIONS With Dr David Gillespie Federal MP for Lyne

THE Federal Coalition Government has announced new funding for the community radio sector, supporting the vital role they play in enhancing the diversity of Australia’s media and broadcasting sector. The Government will provide new funding of $6.1 million over two years to support the rollout of digital radio services and one-off spectrum reorganisation costs for analogue radio services. This investment is in addition to the $15 million per annum already provided through the Community Broadcasting Program. The new funding will be focussed on the roll-out of digital radio into regional areas and will provide some additional investment to support infrastructure needs of community stations. The government’s funding complements other funding available to the sector, and the many thousands of hours that volunteers across the country provide in support of their local stations. We believe community radio is an important voice. There are 455 community radio stations transmitting to more than 5 million people each week. That makes community radio Australia’s largest independent media sector. I am very proud to announce this great investment for our local community. More information on community radio is available at: www.communications.gov.au/ what-we-do/radio/community-radio Just another reminder as we head into the flu season that everyone should look at getting vaccinated either through your local Family GP or a qualified pharmacist. Through the week I visited Great Lakes Pharmacy to get my vaccination for this flu season which was administered by a local pharmacist. Pharmacists across the whole of the country who have completed special training are now able to administer flu vaccinations for adults. The 2017 vaccine is quadrivalent and provides broad protection against multiple strains of influenza. Being able to receive a flu vaccination at the local community pharmacy - with their ease of access and long opening hours - will increase coverage and complement other vaccination providers like GPs and nurses. Many consumers who would not normally get vaccinated will be able to visit their local pharmacy - if they’re offering the service - possibly without the need to make an appointment. The convenience of having a flu vaccination administered by a pharmacist in a pharmacy is significant with 97 per cent of Australians living within 2.5km of a pharmacy.

NSW: the place to do business NSW Business Conditions Highest In Nation: NSW is the best place in Australia to do business, with the latest NAB Business Survey showing NSW business conditions above the national average for 29 straight months. The findings, a part of the NAB Monthly Business Survey for April 2017, showed that NSW has the strongest business conditions of any state. NAB’s business conditions index measures the hiring intentions, profitability, and sales activity of businesses. The business conditions index for NSW is almost four times higher than its long-term average in April. The findings confirmed NSW’s proven track record as the best place for businesses to thrive. These results show yet again that if you’re a business looking to grow and looking to employ more people, NSW is the place to be. Since coming into office, this Government has taken an economic mess and turned it into unrivalled economic success. We have $73 billion of investment in improving and building new infrastructure, whilst at the same time cutting red tape and helping businesses flourish, and this is reflected in these results. women volunteers for the 2017 NSW Hidden Treasures Honour Roll. Nominating a rural woman for the 2017 Hidden Treasures Honour Roll is a great way to celebrate women and to promote the valuable role of volunteering to local communities. There are many outstanding female volunteers who provide valuable support and services to enrich the lives of others. Their drive, hard work and enthusiasm ensure the viability of many crucial community groups and charities and they come to the fore during natural disasters. The NSW government is proud to support this important initiative, by recognising women volunteers who give so much of their own time. For more information contact the Rural Women’s Network on 02 6391 3612 or email rural.women@dpi.nsw.gov.au. Nominations close on Friday, July 28, 2017.

THE COWPER REPORT With Luke Hartsuyker

Federal Member for Cowper

LAST week, I was pleased to announce that progressively local residents will soon be able to start ordering services on the new fixed-line NBN network in Port Macquarie. I understand how important the NBN network rollout is for residents and businesses in Port Macquarie, so I’m very pleased to see connections available less than a year after being elected to represent Port Macquarie. NBN Co is about to switch on the first ‘nodes’ in the new network, which means the first 3,100 homes and businesses will be able to start connecting to the NBN network at the end of this month. Another 34,500 premises in the Port Macquarie-Hastings region will be progressively connected to the NBN network over the coming twelve months. Faster, more reliable broadband can be a genuine boost for local families and businesses by opening up new opportunities. A great number of daily tasks these days require, or are made easier, with internet access. It’s important to note that your home or business will not automatically connect to the new NBN service in your area. You first need to explore the options by contacting your own trusted internet retailer. For more info, visit: www.nbnco.com.au

Alice was the start of Humpty the egg

WHILE I was guest speaker at an organisation recently, and after I had spoken about Humpty Dumpty, somebody asked why Humpty Dumpty was often depicted as an egg. I thought I knew and I thought I had written about it before, but experience has taught me never to give an opinion without checking first. Let me give you one of the stories about Humpty Dumpty. Although several stories abound, this one seems to be fairly accurate. Many years ago I read a story alleging the Oklahoma Bar Association was going to conduct a trial to decide whether Humpty Dumpty’s fall was an accident. My inquiries led to the English town of Colchester, roughly north-east of London, which had several businesses that included the name Humpty Dumpty. Catherine Newley, assistant curator of community history at Colchester, wrote me a long letter explaining the story. She also mentioned Old King Cole, Moll Flanders and Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, which was written around the corner in West Stockwell Street. Humpty Dumpty was a very large cannon. It was mounted on a wall during the civil war of 1648 and manned by a bloke called Thompson. The Royalists held out for several weeks, but

my

LAURIE BARBER

eventually the piece of wall where the cannon was mounted was blown to pieces. Humpty Dumpty fell to the ground. It was wrecked and the Royalists were unable to put it together again. A plaque near the scene reads: “In sixteen hundred and forty eight When England suffered the pains of state The Roundheads lay siege to Colchester town Where the king’s men still fought for the crown. There one-eyed Thompson stood on the wall A gunner of deadliest aim of all From St Mary’s tower his cannon he fired. Humpty Dumpty was its name. Humpty Dumpty sat on the wall, Humpty Dumpty had a great fall. All the king’s horses and all the king’s men, Couldn’t put Humpty together again.” Somebody even wanted to dig up the road

to see if he could find pieces of Humpty, but the council wouldn’t allow him to do so. You will notice that there was no mention of an egg, although if you break an egg you would hardly be able to put an egg together again. The story of the egg seemed to have started with Lewis Carroll in his Alice Through the Looking Glass (Alice was the daughter of a friend). Lewis Carroll decided to introduce the egg. An egg, when broken, could not be mended, no matter how many people were put onto the job. The egg, for whatever reason, became part of the Humpty Dumpty story and so whenever we see an illustration of Humpty Dumpty we see an egg. And you want to know about Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. Very briefly, Jane Taylor lived upstairs in her home. Her father was involved in the church and engraving. Her mother and other members of her family wrote poetry. She looked out the window one night and wrote The Star, of five verses, wondering what was in the star. The version we know is of two verses and one of the most popular poems around. She wrote lots of other stuff too, but we have forgotten about that. lauriebarber.com; lbword@midcoast.com.au

Thanks for getting us shipshape YOUR Local Independent (YLI) Managing Editor, Sandy Mackenzie was recently invited to the new Marine Rescue radio base to attend an informal presentation to thank the local businesses that came forward from the call for help to fit out the refurbished radio base at Town Beach. In 2015 YLI reported that Port Macquarie Hastings Council had revealed to Marine Rescue that there was going to be a significant shortfall in funds to complete the refurbishment of the building and would not include the fitout. In the same article YLI asked the business community to help by donating materials, labour and time to complete the work. It’s been a long haul and there is still work to be done, however Marine Rescue PMQ are finally settling into their new abode. Unit Commander, Neil Yates said: “It’s great to be able to finally thank the businesses that have got involved with the fitout. “We were overwhelmed by the response to the story in the Independent, the businesses we have here today are involved because they read the story, knew they could help and volunteered their services without hesitation. It’s a testament to how our community can work together and achieve fantastic results. “Today we want to say thank you to the following businesses that came to the party – without them we would be well over our budget. They have literally saved us 10s of thousands of dollars. • Brian Doorey from Amber Tiles for supplying all the tiles, glue and grout for upstairs and downstairs free; • Paul Betteridge from Port Electrical – Paul does all the electrical work for Marine Rescue PMQ for both sites free. He has installed all the wiring and cabling for the radio base;

From left: Kiel Bigeni (Men at Work), Dave Targett (Marine Rescue), Rob Breskal (Carpet Court), Sandy Mackenzie, John Pickett (Marine Rescue), Paul Betteridge (Port Electrical), Neil Yates (Marine Rescue) and front is Kyle Maslen (Port Electrical). • Ken Davis from CNW has supplied all the cabling, lights, smoke detectors and the switchboard free; • Rob Breskal from Carpet Court who supplied and installed all the floor coverings for free; • Kiel Bigeni from Men At Work for their large donation towards the new boat and ongoing support with maintenance and events; • PMHC for the $12,700 Grant towards the fitout, which included the toilet and bathroom

sink. “We would also like to particularly thank John Pickett from Marine Rescue who took on the role of project manager. He has done an excellent job bringing the project together – on budget. Although we are not quite up to completion we are in a far better position to provide our service to the community and water users.” Apart from the radio base, Marine Rescue

This Sunday is Wombat Day THIS Sunday (May 28) is Wombat Day at Billabong Zoo, Port Macquarie. We will use the day to highlight the plight of wombats in the wild. In particular we are fund-raising for the northern hairynosed wombat and the work of the Wombat Foundation. “At one time, there were only 35 northern hairy-nosed wombats left on the planet. The Wombat Foundation is helping to save these beautiful and elusive wombats: the largest herbivorous burrowing mammals in the world. Thanks to the support of people like you, there are now more than 200 northern hairy-nosed wombats. But 200 is still an alarmingly small number.” - extract from www.wombatfoundation.com.au At Billabong Zoo we have two species of wombats. The common wombat and the southern hairy-nosed wombat (the southern wombat is sadly now on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as near threatened). Although we use our Zoo voice to bring awareness to Threatened Species we also like to ensure we offer a great family day for all visitors. Rain or shine. Kempsey has Truckers Wall KEMPSEY now has its own Truck Drivers Memorial Wall, thanks to the North Coast Trucking Social Club, generous sponsorship and donations from the public. The Memorial Wall, situated at Puma Kempsey Service Centre, was recently unveiled and honours those in the trucking industry who have passed away. “There are Truck Drivers Memorials at other places, like Grafton and Tuncutta, and we thought it was appropriate for Kempsey to have its own,” said North Coast Trucking Social Club president Chris Slocombe. “It probably took 12 months from the time the idea was first floated and it was built through great sponsorship from local businesses as well as other donations. “The wall itself was donated and erected by the Puma Service Centre, the rims and tyres were donated by Mavin Truck Centre. All the garden materials were donated by Dave and Darlene Haywood at Haywood’s Landscape Supplies and the plants were donated by Trish and Andrew at Express Garden Edging. “The Memorial Wall provides a place where truckies and their families can gather to remember our mates in the industry who are no longer with us. “Each year there will be a ceremony when new plaques will be added to the wall.”

on landholders not to delay reporting concerns they have regarding livestock health. In the case of dead stock the chances of determining the cause are much greater the earlier a post mortem is conducted. Experience overseas has clearly shown that the ability to quickly contain and eradicate an exotic disease is closely related to how early the disease is diagnosed. “We are fortunate in Australia to not have many of the more devastating diseases of livestock seen around the world,” Dr Poe said.

smacked!

All the Good stuff in our Community

You’re not to blame! STUMP THE PREACHER

With Pastor Kerry Medway

QUESTION: I was abused by a leader in the Church when I was a child. Will God ever love me again? ANSWER: This question breaks my heart and also makes me very angry at the way leaders in the Church and community have betrayed trust & abused so many of our children in the past. I have prayed with several adults who were victims of abuse as children and they nearly always feel guilty, as if they have done something wrong. Let me say as loud as I possibly can – You are not to blame! You have done nothing wrong. Children abused are not excluded from God’s love. Often they feel dirty or ashamed, but when God looks down upon these broken children He weeps for them. His heart breaks. I fear for those who have been the perpetrators of abuse of innocent children when they face God on the judgement day. Find a Bible and look up Mark’s Gospel Chapter 10 verse 13 – 16. See what Jesus said to his disciples and what He did for children when the disciples were trying to keep them away from Him? People who have been abused as children don’t have to carry their wounds for the rest of the lives. Once again grab your Bible and this time look into the Old Testament and find Isaiah 53 verse 5. In this one verse we see what Jesus did for us to bring salvation and healing at

the Cross. Primarily, Jesus died on a Cross for mankind’s sins. It is through embracing Jesus Christ we can enter into a personal relationship with the Almighty God. However we also read in this verse that Jesus at the Cross provided healing for us, both physical healing and healing for those hurts hidden below the surface. There is inner healing available through Jesus’ love and forgiveness. I encourage all who have been crippled by past - abuse, rejection, pain and suffering - to seek out some Christians trained in praying with you. Check out the Healing Rooms in Gordon Street or go with a trusted friend to one of the great local Churches in our area and ask for help. Remember - God loves you!

Famed US evangelist Billy Graham

Graham’s voice reached masses IN 1959, an amazing event occurred which saw over 140,000 people pack into the Melbourne Cricket Ground and 120,000 people pack into the Sydney Showground for some weeks to hear the US evangelist Billy Graham. At these crusades hundreds of people made life-changing decisions to follow Jesus Christ. Social historian Stuart Pigeon records that in 1960-61, so great was the life-changing impact of these crusades that the numbers of people in prison dropped and the divorce rate dropped dramatically. On Anzac Day, April 25, 1959, the Churches in the Macleay and Hastings areas chartered a special train to take people to Sydney for the Billy Graham Crusade. The train picked people up from Kempsey and Wauchope Railway Stations (would love to hear from anyone who did that train trip). Land-line hook-ups were brought into the Port Macquarie Civic Hall from April 28 to May 2. Thousands of people around Australia heard Billy Graham preach via a radio land-line. At the Wauchope Showground Hall hundreds came to listen. It is reported that one day 300400 people tried to pack in to the Showground Hall with more than 100 people sitting outside in their cars listening to the broadcast. On May 19-21, the Ritz Theatre in Port Macquarie showed a Cinesound Review of Billy Graham several times of the final Sunday

meeting of the Sydney Crusade. I have no eyewitness accounts of what effect this may have had on local people. (I would love to hear your testimony – please send it to me via email: kerry@kerrymedway. org or via letter to - P.O. Box 954, Port Macquarie, 2444). Some years ago I was at an old wooden Church in Blinman in South Australia, not far from Leigh Creek. An elderly man was assisting in the Church service I was conducting. I asked him how he had come to faith. He raised his stooped back and proudly told me that in 1959 they had a land-line of the Billy Graham Crusade in the Church. He listened to Billy’s voice on an old crackly radio. At the conclusion when Billy invited people to come forward to be ‘born again’, he went to the front of the church standing in front of the crackly radio and prayed the sinner’s prayer. He gave his life to Jesus. I was thrilled to hear his story.

arts, music and more...

Popular reading GIG GUIDE STORIES about heritage, identity, love and relationships were most popular among the list of most borrowed Australian fiction books from May 2016 to April 2017. Civica, provider of Australia’s leading library system, Spydus, have announced the findings to coincide with this year’s Library and Information Week (22-28 May). Topping the list of most borrowed Australian books was ‘Rain Music’ by Di Morrissey, which is inspired by her adventures in far north Queensland. ‘Spirits of the Ghan’ by Judy Nunn, a period story set during the construction of the Ghan railway, explores family dynamics and cultural collision and ‘Truly Madly Guilty’ by Liane Moriarty, which examines marriage, sex, parenthood and friendship peaked at number two and three respectively on the most borrowed Australian fiction books list. Other high profile Australian authors on the list include popular children’s author, Andy Griffiths, who had three books featured on this year’s most borrowed Australian books index.

Club toasts a bumper year Come and join them on the deck By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC THE Port Macquarie Surf Life Saving Club has celebrated a very successful year filled with exciting events, championships, and rescues. The club held its annual presentation night recently – with a ’70s theme - which saw President Rick Rolff and Club Captain Nikki Stafford thanking all members for their contribution towards making Flynns Beach safe over the summer. “Members of Port Macquarie Life Saving Club put in over 5000 hours patrolling Flynns Beach every Saturday, Sunday and public holiday between September 2016 and April 2017,” said Terry Mawer, the club’s publicity officer. “There were 41 incidents during the year where lifesavers rescued swimmers who were in trouble. In almost all cases, those rescued were swimming outside the red and yellow flags. “Lifesavers also provided first aid on 114 occasions over the summer, the majority being bluebottle stings.” “We’ve also had a successful year in competition with the juniors doing very well in the country championships.” The major award winners at the presentation

the equipment to put another good show on. “Overall we had a reasonably good year with a lot of success. We were reasonably competitive in the surf boats this year and we hosted one of the rounds of the North Coast Boats Series and we would also be planning to host a round again next year at Flynns Beach.” The surf club is also becoming a hot spot for locals to sit back, listen to live music, have a beer and watch the waves roll in. “In the coming months you will be able to watch the whales come past from our new deck which is pretty popular,” said Mr Mawer. “We’ve been opening the surf club bar every Sunday

Origin another tipping twist

NSW coach Laurie Daley

IT’S that time of the year … mate against mate, etc. State of Origin is indeed a fantastic celebration, but for the struggling footy tipster in 2017 it could not have come at a worse time. This year has been tough … very tough on the tipsters with very few teams showing consistent form. So throw into the mix your best players taken out of teams to be on Origin duty and the tipping assignment gets even tougher. Although there are only four games to mull over for this weekend, finding a winner will not be easy. For those who follow Your Local Independent’s tips (and let us apologise right now), well last weekend we were able to find 6 wins, with the Titans and Dogs letting us down. From an Origin perspective, there is plenty of blue sky for NSW this year. On the back of JT being a very doubtful starter there are other signs that the Origin tide may be turning.

5.30pm, Mt Smart Stadium, Auckland): If ever the Warriors were going to find a ‘w’ it has to be this weekend against the depleted Broncos. Brisbane have again been left bare by the interstate series. This is something Wayne Bennett would be used to, but there is no replacing half your top side. Warriors are at home and if they can’t win here … • Your Local Independent tips: Warriors Sharks v Bulldogs (Saturday, May 27, 7.30pm, Southern Cross Group Stadium, Cronulla): Sharks certainly are feeling the bite from Origin and despite some really good recent form, are not as used to the Origin woes as the Broncos, Cowboys or Storm. Dogs have been playing tough, but just can’t put their best game together. More likely to happen this weekend. • Your Local Independent tips: Bulldogs. Raiders v Roosters (Sunday, May 28, 4pm, GIO Stadium, Canberra): Origin considered, this will be a tough one. Both sides have players on Origin duty. The Raiders finally finished on the right side of the ledger last weekend and Ricky’s boys will be looking to build on that. No denying just how classy the Roosters are this 26th – 31st May 2017 season and are building. However last Friday 26th May, 7.50pm, ANZ Stadium weekend the Canberra halves showed Rabbitohs vs Eels signs of where they should be. Saturday 27th May, 5.30pm, Mt Smart Stadium • Your Local Independent tips: Warriors vs Broncos Raiders Saturday 27th May, 7.30pm, Southern Cross Group Queensland v NSW (Wednesday, Stadium May 31, Suncorp Stadium, Brisbane): Sharks vs Bulldogs Maroons line-up has experience, plenty Sunday 28th May, 4pm, GIO Stadium of experience, but many of these great Raiders vs Roosters players are nearing the veteran stage. Wednesday 31st May, 8pm, Suncorp Stadium Queensland vs New South Wales Blues are big, fast and in form. As long as Daley can keep the egos in check then his boys can do the near impossible – win at ‘Lang Park’. • Your Local Independent tips: NSW

The Maroons do stay with ‘those that have done the job before’, but this year, a number of ‘those’ look a little old and tired. Meanwhile Laurie Daley has certainly been handed a form side. The Maroons may have won 10 of the last 11 series, but that is about to change. OK, so let’s look at the weekend’s NRL games first. Rabbitohs v Eels (Friday, May 26, 7.50pm, ANZ Stadium, Sydney): Both teams coming off a loss last weekend and both looking to find some traction through the middle of the season. There is plenty of pressure on Mitchell Moses to find his feet quickly at the Eels. The only problem with switching clubs mid-season is that you have a limited amount of time to make things count this season. GI’s tough time may just spark his teammates to better things. • Your Local Independent tips: Rabbitohs Warriors v Broncos (Saturday, May 27,
