Can you help this family in their desperate race against time
One final wish TWENTY-FIVE years ago Colleen Carroll found the friend of a lifetime in Clarrie Sheehan, at South West Rocks. The pair restored cottages and travelled together before life sent them on different paths. Now in Perth and gravely ill, Colleen has asked her family to try to track down Clarrie so she can speak with him one last time. They believe he may be still in the Port Macquarie region. • Read LIZZIE STIPCEVIC’S story Page 3

Family’s race to find friend “

Then suddenly, out of the blue, she said: ‘Oh, do you think you could find Clarrie?’
Colleen Carroll and her daughter Melissa The pair met and a friendship sparked. “At the time Clarrie was renovating fishermen’s cottages for holiday accommodation at South West Rocks,” says Melissa. “Mum would go up there as a friend and help him out. She would have been 55 then. And then they went for a trip around Australia for two months travelling together. She said how he always had a good sense of humour and he always wanted to try something – like putting his
“
COLLEEN Carroll wants to hear her friend’s voice just once more. The 80-year-old is gravely ill in a Perth hospital and her family is on a desperate mission to locate an old friend – Clarrie Sheehan. Colleen’s daughter Melissa believes Clarrie may be living in the Port Macquarie area and would be about 85 years old. Colleen and Clarrie were close friends about 25 years ago, but then lost touch. It is only in recent weeks Melissa and her sister Juanita realized their mother had one dying wish. “Recently she seemed to be going down hill,” recalls Melissa. “I was thinking ‘well this is it’. Then suddenly, out of the blue, she said: ‘Oh, do you think you could find Clarrie?’ For her to come out and say something like that, it’s pretty amazing.” Melissa explains that her parents divorced about 40 years ago and Colleen, from Sydney’s northern beaches, first met Clarrie in about 1991. “Mums’ sister Joyce, in Woy Woy, was listening to the radio late one night and a gentleman came on, announcing he would like a companion (female friend),” explains Melissa. “Joyce thought he would be compatible with Colleen. So Joyce gave him, Mum’s phone number.”
toe in croc-infested waters. “From what mum says it seems like they got on really well.” Colleen never re-married and Melissa doesn’t know if there was a romantic side to her mother’s friendship with Clarrie. “Mum has mentioned Clarrie over the years, but has never really expressed her feelings or anything,” says Melissa. “She’s a very lovely lady, but she’s very private and loves peace and nature. “Her and Clarrie were friends for just a few years and I don’t know why the friendship stopped. “Mum said Clarrie used to like walking a lot, so we are thinking he is still alive and fit. And mum said he played bowls.” Melissa said her mother had bought a property at Macksville and then later a villa at Nambucca Heads where she lived until about three years ago. “I came to visit in 2013 and realized Mum

couldn’t live by herself anymore,” Melissa said. “She was diagnosed with emphysema and needed to be on oxygen. Mum had been struggling. She is very stubborn and doesn’t want to be a burden to anyone. “So we sold her place at Nambucca and took up my sister’s offer, of moving to Perth and living with her family. “There she has been for the past three years. “Mum was very thin and I didn’t think she would last very long. But she has lasted three years because my sister is right into healthy cooking. She has had a couple of falls in the past year and she’s just getting really frail. “She’s now in a Perth hospital.” Melissa said she would love to speak with Clarrie or any of his relatives (she believes he has a daughter and two sons) and maybe even arrange a Skype session with her Mum. Law change concern for neighbours THE NSW Government is now considering a change to the legislation covering the use of residential property. The recommendations made by a Government Report in October 2016, if implemented, will mean that all residents (tenants and owner occupiers) will be affected. All the recommendations relate to making it legal to short-term let property for as little as a night in
We deserve names YEARS ago when the state government and PMHC first agreed on the need to replace Stingray Creek bridge, the cost, with a government grant was $4million. It just came in at $26million. That’s the result of years of procrastination by our ‘progressive’ council. Now they want the right to a permanent rate rise above that allowable limit, a decision made when? Before or after council elections, when the spiel was exactly the opposite, so where’s their mandate? Where are the silent councillors who have voted for this imposition? Apparently it’s easy for them to

G’DAY and Happy Australia Day … Mate! A day to celebrate our national heritage, yet dedicated to chucking the raw prawn on the barby, dressed in ‘Made in China’ Australia Day merchandise, and sucking back a few too many sherbets while simultaneously working out how to pull off a sicky tomorrow to enjoy an extra-long weekend, without losing your job. Yay! Please excuse my cynicism, but really? Don’t get me wrong. I think we should be celebrating our heritage. I also think the majority of Australian adults over 25 should be sent to school to learn about the Australian heritage before they are allowed to participate in the celebrations. For some reason, a lot of ‘Australians’ have an issue with people immigrating to Australia. Last time I looked, apart from our Indigenous people, all Australians are immigrants – mostly hard and fast criminals sent to a penal colony. Fast forward a couple of centuries and we live in a society of ‘entitlement’. The world owes us everything and what I call an ‘openly discriminatory’ society. There is more discrimination of race, religion, culture and gender than I have ever witnessed. 200 odd years ago, first stop, Port Arthur penal colony. Now, first stop, purpose-built offshore detention centres. Shameful! It’s just not Australian!

TO the Port Macquarie-Hasting Council for driving the young surfers away from overnighting in our beach car parks. Now they are camping in the bush away from patrolled areas away from facilities. Toilet paper now litters pristine bush areas adjacent to beaches. Surely it is more desirable to let young people sleep in their cars and vans in carparks where they have toilets.
Thumbs up Thumbs up TO the staff at Kempsey Hospital Day Surgery Unit, top class facilities and very best of staff. Very professional and personal.
TO the neighbours who displayed Christmas decorations on their homes and gardens in the Oxley Park area. Well done as it all adds to a happy atmosphere for everyone. Not all of us are able to do this! It was a little harder this year for you due to very high winds, so thank you for persevering.

THE Federal Government is right to finally act against tax schemes for multi-nationals and wealthy individuals. It is also right to act against social security rorters. The government is very wrong with its inaction against rorters amongst elected members of parliament. One and a half years ago then Prime Minister Abbott assured us that the rules would be revised but the Health Minister and others show they remain a joke. Prior to the last election I wrote to Messrs Turnbull and Shorten with suggestions they could win power by undertaking to control parliamentarians expenses. Surprise,

The effect of these changes will depend on what the Government approves but the overseas experience has seen neighbourhoods devastated, particularly those with a café culture and in walking distance of good amenities, beaches and public transport. The NSW Government has kept the Report very quiet but intends to make known its decision in April, 2017.

Radio Shack a community effort By SUE PATERICK
During bad bushfires “ in early November last
year ... three-fixed wing fire bombers and three helicopters refuelled 130 times
“
HARD work from Rural Fire Service (RFS) volunteers and support from local businesses and Kempsey Shire Council has seen the opening of a new Portable Aviation Communications Unit at Kempsey Airport. When bushfires are blazing this unassuming white shipping container, lovingly christened the Radio Shack, becomes the command centre for members of the Lower North Coast Aviation Support Unit. From inside the air-conditioned building this specialised unit manages all the fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters that use the airport to refuel. The aircraft also reload with water or a retardant to drop on the fires, while the helicopters fill up their huge buckets from dams or rivers close to the fire. During bad bushfires in early November last year, when the sky was black with smoke and thousands of hectares of bushland and property were destroyed, three-fixed wing fire bombers and three helicopters refuelled 130 times. The helicopters also performed mapping duties. Aviation Unit Secretary, Robyn Ryan, said the new communication unit will see more efficient interaction with the RFS and these aircraft. “There will be a quicker turnaround for aircraft to refuel and reload and get back to the fire ground faster,” she said. Before the new communication unit was established it was necessary to be at the main Fire Control Centre and compete with radio communications from ground crews and other fire agencies. Robyn says when they have big bushfires running there is a massive amount of radio traffic and having a separate communication centre allows for greater control. As Kempsey Airport is a designated RFS Aviation base for the Lower North Coast, an area that encompasses Coffs Harbour to Port Macquarie, the new firefighting facilities are vital for the region’s safety. It took six to eight weeks to establish the Radio Shack thanks to the tireless work of volunteers, who helped raise funds with events like sausage sizzles and raffles. It was a real community effort with local residents donating funds as well, and government grants making up the difference. Special thanks go to Cetnaj Lighting in West Kempsey for donating all the new unit’s electrical components. Manager, Jochen Schmidt, said he was happy to help out because it was such a worthy cause and he could see the RFS volunteers slaving away in difficult conditions. “I think the new unit turned out pretty good,” he said, at the official opening last week. Aviation Unit Leader, Brian McKenzie, said they couldn’t have done it without Cetnaj’s support. He also wanted to thank electrician John Olsen for volunteering his time too. Aviation Unit Deputy Leader, Allan Wardrope, said the whole purpose of the new facility was to support the community.

AUSTRALIA Day - what a wonderful time of the year to celebrate our national day. During the summer, Australians tend to take greater advantage of the many things that make our country so great. A swim at the beach, a walking trek through the hinterland, a BBQ on the verandah, watching the cricket and the tennis, or simply spending time with friends and family over a meal. It’s a wonderful culture that we have here in Australia and one that we should reflect upon every Australia Day. When you look at the many countries around the world, you can’t help but come to the conclusion that we truly are the lucky country. Our Indigenous heritage, our early settler and convict heritage, and of course our diverse population that is made up of people from all around the world who have settled here contributing to the rich tapestry of our society. This Australia Day we should celebrate all of these things and enjoy the best of our great nation. In a year since the Coalition Government launched a landmark new plan to capitalise on the nation’s strengths and turn Australia into an innovation leader, major initiatives are underway to boost investment, generate jobs and improve the quality of our lives. The $1.1 billion National Innovation and Science Agenda was launched in December 2015, and represented a significant turning point in the nation’s economic direction. Over the past 12 months, elements of the agenda have taken shape and are helping to drive a more prosperous future. The Coalition Government is investing in culture and capital, to help businesses embrace risk and encourage investment in start-ups and early stage ventures. The $200 million CSIRO Innovation Fund launched on the weekend will support the commercialisation of Australian research through co-investment in new spin-off and startup companies, products and services created by Australian research institutions. The $23 million Incubator Support Program was launched in September to grow the next generation of innovative businesses to globally competitive Australian companies. Industry Innovation and Science Minister Greg Hunt said the $500 million Biomedical Translation Fund would make a substantial difference to the biomedical sector by providing finance to Australian companies that are ready to turn their cutting edge research into worldleading products. We’re placing an emphasis on collaboration, to increase the level of engagement between businesses, universities and the research sector to commercialise ideas and solve problems.

The idea of Mates for Manus is to let the 873 men seeking asylum in Australia know they are not alone
“
By NIKALA SIM A SPARK of passion has fanned the flames of an idea that is now burning in the hearts of people across the world. Jill Horton, originally from Canada, has lived in Australia for 21 years, and Port Macquarie for eight of those. The qualified teacher and social worker is dedicated to helping vulnerable people and has stumbled upon a group to whom she has become devoted. “I grew up in Canada, which is quite a multicultural country,” Jill says. “There were a lot of different cultures in my community. “There was no fear and everyone got along I didn’t find anyone who was different, we were all human I guess.” At school Jill learnt about the Underground Railway – the largest anti-slavery freedom movement in North America – where a secret network of abolitionists helped between 30,000 and 40,000 African Americans escape slavery in the south. “I suppose I grew up with the children of these people and I developed a great capacity for empathy, and concern about minority cultures and an understanding of that,” Jill says. She also travelled the world and gained an appreciation of many cultures, Jill says. “I arrived in Australia during the Howard years when Tampa occurred and ever since I have been living in a country that is afraid of refugees and asylum seekers.” During her studies, Jill took a special unit of education focussed on international social work. “I wanted to get a perspective of the people coming to our country, and potentially I could be working with them as well,” she says. “So, when I started studying about refugees and displaced persons I discovered a lot of knowledge I didn’t have before including the fact that we will see more refugees coming for economic reasons and because of war and global warming.” Jill became a member of several refugee
Port Macquarie’s Jill Horton has founded Mates for Manus to provide friendly support for asylum seekers at the Manus Regional Processing Centre in Papua New Guinea. The group can be accessed through facebook groups on facebook and began to chat with men on Manus. To her first friend, an Afghani man named Walid Zazai, Jill said: ‘I’m here I don’t agree with our government and I want you to know that’.” The friendships grew and soon Jill was chatting with six men in detention, that has now grown to 40. “I realised there is such a need for friendship, to hear how someone’s day has been, to know that someone is there and they care.” To fill that gap Jill created the Mates for Manus facebook page which in its first week gathered 238 members, with more joining each day. Members share their photographs of Australia and the vibe of the group is very positive, Jill says. “The idea of Mates for Manus is to let the
873 men seeking asylum in Australia know they are not alone. “There are a lot of people listening to their stories. “I have found social media is their lifeline to the outside world because they feel very isolated. “Telling their story to someone else is really important and they want to feel heard and they want to feel like they’re human. “I don’t have a problem with villagers attacking me, I don’t have a problem with security people attacking me, I don’t have to be worrying about the gates being locked, I don’t have to worry about what’s going to happen tomorrow - whether someone else is going to die - I’ve got that safety, they don’t. “It would be great if every single person was contacted and had a friend and knew Australia was listening and they are being heard.”

Passion key to tutors’ success By SUE PATERICK
CELEBRATING one year of passionate education, The Learning Pod at West Kempsey has grown to include school-holiday workshops. The Learning Pod’s motto is to nurture each child’s learning potential in their area of need, whether it be support, consolidation or enrichment. With a Bachelor of Education in Primary Teaching and 37 years of combined experience in the school system, owners, Michelle Clarke and Karen Foley, first began their tutoring business because they were passionate about teaching and Kempsey. “We love teaching,” Karen said. “And wanted to improve literacy and numeracy outcomes for children and provide a unique service in the Macleay Valley.” Michelle couldn’t agree more. “We just wanted to do something within education, and we wanted to use our skills,” she added. Focusing on children aged from prekindergarten to Year Nine, Karen and Michelle offer one- on-one tutoring across all Key Learning Areas, with a special focus in Maths
Karen Foley and Michelle Clarke owners of tutoring business, The Learning Pod, are celebrating its first birthday and getting ready for a busy year ahead and English including reading, writing and spelling. Each weekly session lasts from 30 minutes to one hour and focuses on individual needs, which are based on assessment. Input from the parents and child as well as the tutor is all part of the assessment process. Karen and Michelle also assist students in homework and study skills, and all sessions are based on the NSW syllabus for the Australian Curriculum. During their school-holiday workshops they offer a variety of fun options that include craft, cooking, science, art, construction and textiles. Both women think local schools and teachers are doing a fantastic job and see themselves as adding to a child’s education, as an extra support in the learning process. “Education is vital and we just want to assist each child achieve their learning potential,”

explained Karen. Both Karen and Michelle enjoy the enthusiasm of the children when working one on one as they can see their individual progress. The Learning Pod offers engaging challenges to motivate a student’s learning and use handson teaching methods, concrete materials, and Information Technology to address the point of need of each student. Michelle has lived in the Macleay Valley most of her life. She has been away to attend university and other pursuits but came home to raise her own children. “I’m passionate about the Macleay Valley and providing a service so people can stay in the valley,” she said. “We have the best of all worlds.” Karen grew up in Sydney but came to live in the Macleay Valley 25 years ago because she fell
in love with its small community atmosphere and its natural beauty. Their advice to anyone starting a new business is to research your market to see where the gaps are, be professional and start out small. The most important thing is to be full of passion for whatever it is you are doing and learn from any feedback. For Karen and Michelle establishing The Learning Pod was a way to make a difference in the life of a child so they could realise their learning potential. The Learning Pod is located at 66 Tozer Street, West Kempsey, and is open from Monday to Thursday from 3pm to 7pm. Karen and Michelle are accepting new enrolments now and can be reached on 0455 219 289 or via email on thelearningpod66@ gmail.com or checkout out their Facebook page.

Grants will grow our new champs MANY of us grew up with sports a part of our everyday life, either at school or on weekends. Times have changed, particularly when it comes to the cost of participating in so many sports. The cost of travel, membership and training equipment has become prohibitive for many people – particularly those who excel in their chosen sport. The Federal Government’s Local Sporting Champions Grants help young Mid North Coast athletes to cover the costs associated with participating in sporting competitions. For every parent or athlete who struggles with the cost of competing, including the purchase of uniforms and equipment or travel expenses to go to competitions, this program can alleviate the burden. The Port Macquarie-Hastings and Macleay Valley areas produce some great athletes and we want to encourage that next generation of champions in the making to stick with their chosen sport. Athletes including Olympians James Magnussen and Ryley Batt began their careers in grassroots competitions and clubs in Port Macquarie. The reality is, we live in a regional area and the cost of travel and accommodation for those who compete, coach or umpire at regional, state or national levels can be significant. The Local Sporting Champions Program is a
Uni dropout worry WITH one in three Australian university students not completing their studies within six years, the Career Development Association of Australia is urging students to receive qualified career advice. Minister Simon Birmingham released the figures recently, asking students to research their courses and universities to know ‘exactly what they’re signing up for’. CDAA National Manager Peter Mansfield said the best way to conduct this research is to seek advice from a career development professional. “Make an appointment with your school or university career counsellor or go see a private career practitioner to ensure you are receiving individualised and specialised advice,” Mr Mansfield said. “Not only can they determine your skills and interests based on assessment tools, but they also understand labour market information and future career options.” Mr Mansfield said this qualified support can ensure students are selecting the right course first time around while preparing for the transition into tertiary education. “The transition into university can be difficult for many students, moving away from a heavily supported environment to one that relies on self-motivation and organisation,” he said. “Career professionals can guide them through this transition.” Members of the public can access a list of career professionals by visiting the Find a Practitioner page on the CDAA website.

way of helping make dreams come true for young sportsmen and women who may not otherwise be able to afford to travel and compete at high-level events. The initiative provides financial assistance for young people aged between 12 and 18 years to help pay for costs associated with competing, coaching or officiating at an official national sporting organisation-endorsed state, national or international sporting championship or a School Sport Australia state or national championship. Grants of $500 are available for successful individual applicants and are allocated three times per year, with applications now open for Round 3. As grant funding is limited, applicants are urged to submit their applications as soon as possible. Round 3 applications close on February 28, 2017. Only calamity is not being at Doris’ birthday
CALAMITY has been described in several dictionaries as a disaster. But Calamity was used as the ‘name’ of a person. Remember Calamity Jane, the film that starred Doris Day? Well, there was a real Calamity Jane. Her name was Martha Jane Canary (sometimes spelt Cannary), a frontierswoman and a professional scout. She was also illiterate and an alcoholic. She was a friend of Wild Bill Hickock and appeared in the Buffalo Bill Wild West Show. She was also a fighter of American Indians. Much of what she said about herself cannot be proven, or she would be on a par with Superman. She died aged 51 in 1903. Several versions are given on the origins of calamity. Many dictionaries say of this word ‘a disaster’. If we go back far enough, we find that the word comes from the Latin calamitas. My Macquarie says it refers to great trouble, adversity, misery or a great misfortune or a disaster. But I like the word from Andrew Bierce, who says of calamity in his 1911 dictionary: “The affairs of life are not of our own ordering; calamities are of two kinds – misfortune to ourselves and good fortune to others”. I don’t know what he meant, but it sounded good.
my
LAURIE BARBER
But the word has been used to refer to crops as well as humans. Eliezer Edwards in his 1881 dictionary says the word refers to the corn not being able to get out of the stalk. He quotes Lord Byron as saying this. My big dictionary says: “fraught with or causing calamity, disastrous, distressful, full of distress, affliction or misery”. It also says “damage, disaster, adversity”. Fancy looking up the word calamity and the dictionary tells you it “causes calamity”. That’s sometimes the problem with dictionaries. Calamitous means “in a calamitous manner”, almost as bad. Shakespeare had a go at it. In Romeo and Juliet he says “thou art wedded to calamitie”. But in 1586 Thomas Cogan in Haven Health said calamity was a grief of the head, which was a common calamity of students. So, I suppose you could say “I can’t do the HSC because I have
a calamity”. In 1754 Samuel Richardson writing The History of Sir Charles Grangdison said: “I am in calamity, my dear: I would love you if you were in calamity“. I think he means if she were as crazy as him. Very few words come from calamity. They might include calamize, calamitousness or calamitously. How about calamite or calamitist? Over the past few years I have been getting a letter each week or so from Doris Day, or one of her advisers. She probably thinks I’m somebody else. Doris Day, the animal welfare activist and former film star, will celebrate her 93rd birthday in the Californian city of Carmel (where Clint Eastwood was once mayor) at the start of April. Her 93rd party (some say 94 and some say 92) will be celebrated at her Cypress Inn. I have been to Carmel, a pleasant coastal town near San Francisco. The $750 package includes accommodation, several items including a gift bag and entertainers Jim Martinez, Laura Didier and Scott Dreie. You are allowed to say you haven’t heard of them. I suppose some people have heard of them. I can’t afford to go. lauriebarber.com; lbword@midcoast.com.au

Kempsey ‘school’ is flying high
Slim Dusty’s wife, Joy McKean, and Dick Smith with staff and volunteers from the Slim dusty Centre
Dick’s salute to his hero By SUE PATERICK
THE crowd was buzzing outside the Slim Dusty Centre recently and all eyes and cameras were trained to the overcast sky awaiting the arrival of entrepreneur Dick Smith. And right on midday the ‘whop, whop, whop!’ of Dick’s large blue helicopter could be heard flying in from Grassy Head, where he and his wife, Pip, had been staying with friend John Forsyth. While Dick has been a patron of the Slim Dusty Centre for the past five years, he has never visited it before.
“Slim was a hero of mine and was a great Australian,” Dick told the welcoming crowd. “I compare him with Banjo Patterson and Henry Lawson and can’t wait to see the Centre.” Slim’s wife, Joy McKean - a singer and songwriter in her own right, was on hand to greet Dick and Pip. “I wanted Dick to open the Centre but he was away in India at the time,” she said. “I think it’s fabulous he’s here now, as I have been trying to get him here for years.” Dick and Pip took the time to wander through the smiling crowd, stopping to chat and have

many a selfie taken. They both were charming and gracious as they posed for photograph after photograph. Once inside, Dick thought the Centre was fantastic. “It is beautifully done and a lot bigger than I thought it was,” he said. Pip agreed. “It is absolutely wonderful,” she said. “I’m surprised there is so much memorabilia and I love the way the Centre includes the whole family. “It’s part of Australian history.”
THE New Year is off to a flying start with the Australian International Aviation College (AIAC) unveiling long-term plans for a $18M training facility at Kempsey Airport, and over 50 student pilots beginning to arrive from China. A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed by Kempsey Shire Council and the AIAC last year, paving the way for the facility to be built in association with China’s Hainan Airlines. Stage one of the facility, due to be completed during 2017, is valued at $3.1million and will see the arrival of new aircraft valued at $7million and a total student body of 150. Chief flying instructor Kevin McMurtrie said 20 cadets recently arrived in Kempsey with a second cohort of 33 students due to arrive in mid-February. An estimated 34 staff will also be appointed during stage one, including 25 flight instructors, an operations manager, theory and language teachers, aircraft maintenance engineers and administrative staff. Mr McMurtrie said the college was extremely happy with the Kempsey campus operations during 2016, with graduating students now moving on to the next training phase of utilising flight simulators currently based at Port Macquarie Airport. “Under our longer-term plans, these simulators will be relocated to Kempsey to be housed within the new and expanded facility,” Mr McMurtrie said. Kempsey Shire mayor, Liz Campbell, described the college’s expansion plans as one of the Shire’s most significant economic development achievements in recent history. “We are delighted to welcome an international training facility of such high calibre to the Macleay Valley,” Cr Campbell said.

Port U3A’s motto - ‘Learners live longer’
By Lizzie Stipcevic
LEARNERS live longer according to Port Macquarie’s U3A. The University of The Third Age in Port Macquarie kicked off the year with a lunch to celebrate the continual hard work of their volunteers. “It was a thank-you to all of our conveners,” said Sue Moll, Secretary of U3A Port Macquarie. “They put an awful lot of work into their classes and their courses.” However, goals were also set for the New Year, says Rita Spencer, Publicity Officer at U3A Port Macquarie. “The course conveners enjoyed catching up with each other and swapping notes on their offerings across the humanities, science, health and fitness, games, arts and crafts,” said Rita. “The committee took the opportunity to discuss plans for guest speakers and social events in the coming year.” U3A is an organisation that provides courses and classes for people of retirement age. The Port Macquarie U3A has grown over the last year with over 800 members and over 75 courses. This year U3A will have 82 courses as well as activities and discussion groups. Although the university is highly regarded for its courses and facilities, sometimes it’s the companionship that draws people in. “What we feel is, as well as having the courses, it’s a real social outlet for a lot of people particularly those who have lost their partners,” explained Sue. “We find a lot of members are quite lonely at the beginning but not for long.” Sue also says that it’s all about knowledge and keeping the grey cells going. “Learners live longer is what we feel would be our motto,” Sue said. “I think it’s a combination of the social side of things and what we offer, we have a lot of exercise

U3A Secretary Sue Moll and Brian Tolagson who continues his World Geography series David Smith, Carol Baker, Gary Dowling and Virginia Oakley share some laughs at the recent U3A luncheon. This lively group conduct the long-running Philosophy course classes that are specifically geared towards older people. There are a lot of gyms in town but they are really geared towards younger people.” It’s not uncommon for new members to also bring their own talents and knowledge to the table. “We have a lady who moved to Port Macquarie last year and is one of our conveners for fabric printing. So people come in and they join the group, and then gradually we discover that they have skills that they are prepared to
offer.” Keen learners are advised to get in early as popular classes such as Australian history and computers will fill up quickly. Enrolments opened on January 23 at the U3A Centre at 2 Lochinvar Place or on-line, at www. pmhu3a.org.au along with the complete course list. Courses will commence on February 6. Call 6584 4192 for more information.
Stage one will not only see the completion of 13 two-bedroom units and two commercial shops, it will also include the completion of all infrastructure for the entire project. The pool, gardens and landscaping will be completed for 81 units, enabling the first residents to move in and utilise all facilities from the outset rather than living amid an ongoing construction site. Cameron Grange is within easy walking distance of the local shops, clubs, pubs, restaurants, medical facilities, tennis courts, the Hastings River and golf club. Coupled with the bus service at the door, state-of-the-art security, underground parking and storage, Cameron Grange is geared toward
ensuring residents can enjoy a comfortable petfriendly environment to retire to. Wauchope is growing. Housing is in demand. The construction of Cameron Grange will open more opportunities in the local community, not just for housing, but also increased business activity as local suppliers and labour will be used whenever possible. The first stage is being offered for sale off the plans and early birds who purchase one of the first 13 units will attract $5,000 appliance package for their brand-new home. For more information, you can visit agent Neroli Reid at the Cameron Grange showroom at 1/36 High Street, Wauchope or call 1300 775 2582.

A NEW mobile phone app will improve the collection of valuable information on our local koala population and access to this data. Port Macquarie Koala Hospital partnered with Port Macquarie-Hastings Council to develop the GPS enabled tool to provide relevant authorities with real-time mobile access to important historical, statistical and location information on koalas. This will assist in best-practice management and facilitate survival of the species. Historical records have been re-created in a digital format as part of the app’s development. New data will be entered directly into the app and provide a streamlined process to create comprehensive digital records. “It will also help focus koala rehabilitation efforts and identify trends and hotspots for road-strike, dog attack and disease prevalence.” Since the early 1970s the Koala Preservation Society have been recording koala incidents and pick up locations, with over 6,000 records collected since records began. Whilst this is one of the most comprehensive koala datasets in Australia, the records were all paper based and not readily accessible or easily usable by the many agencies that rely on koala data. Community members who see a sick or injured koala are asked to contact the Port Macquarie Koala Hospital on 6584 1522 so their volunteers can attend and assist.

By SUE PATERICK EXCITING changes are in the air for the Kempsey Riverside Markets, with a handover of the Market Coordinator role heralding the next stage of development for this monthly community event. This week, the Macleay Valley Business Chamber (MVBC) said a fond farewell to Kate Mainey, who has played a pivotal role as Market Coordinator and been instrumental in the success and growth of the Kempsey Riverside Markets for over three years. Ms Mainey is handing over the organising of the market, to concentrate on her role with the Slim Dusty Centre and other professional interests including her long time music and entertainment career. Chamber President, Gary Scott, said the Macleay Valley Business Chamber had been most fortunate in having Kate at the helm for the past three and half years. “She has worked closely with the Chamber to steer the market’s growth to where we now regularly welcome over 60 stall holders, all specializing in hand-made, home-grown vintage and quality goods,” he added. “It’s the great variety, our incredible market venue on the mighty Macleay River, some fantastic local talent delivering a diverse schedule of entertainment, plus the welcoming stall holders and Chamber members that have

Money available to fight crime THE Mid North Coast community is being encouraged to come forward to the NSW Government with solutions to stamp down on local crime and anti-social behaviour. Member for Oxley Melinda Pavey urged community groups, council, businesses and organisations to apply for a grant up to $250,000 for ideas to boost local safety and pride. “The Community Safety Fund will invest in projects that address local crime hot spots and promotes safe and inclusive use of public space,” Mrs Pavey said. “I know many people in our community have innovative ideas of how to make our community a safer place and I encourage them to take up this funding opportunity. “The NSW Liberals and Nationals Government is committed to reducing crime and making our state a safer place to live.” Minister for Justice and Police Troy Grant said crime is a social and financial burden that the NSW Government is committed to reducing. “We know there is always more that can be done to stamp out crime in our towns and suburbs and are working with the community to identify opportunities,” Mr Grant said. “The reasons and consequences of crime in one region of NSW can be very different to other regions therefore it is important to invest in local solutions.” Attorney General Gabrielle Upton said the $10 million program over four years has already helped make local crime reduction ideas a reality. The Community Safety Fund aims to reduce crime and anti-social behaviour through infrastructure and service delivery projects that address local crime hot spots, anti-social behaviour and promotes safe and inclusive use of public space and collaborative approaches to crime prevention and detection. All the Good stuff in our Community
Plenty of scientists are committed Christians STUMP THE PREACHER
With Pastor Kerry Medway
QUESTION: Can a Christian be true to his faith and the Bible and also be committed to science? Sadly, today there are many in our education campuses, universities and schools who teach science and evolution as fact and are prone to ridicule Christian beliefs, especially in relation to Creation vs Evolution. There are some Church leaders who also are just as vehement in their attack on science and those who call themselves scientists. This does not have to be. I remember reading a book of testimonies from the US Space program and being pleasantly surprised to see that half the scientists involved in the NASA Space program were Bible-believing Christians. Several said they had found their research had convinced them there must be a God as they examined the intricacies of how the world and science works. The Sydney Anglican Churches’ ‘Southern Cross’ (December 2016) featured some stories and testimonies of people who were leaders in their science fields and yet maintained a deep and committed faith in God through Jesus Christ. Dr Lewis Jones, an astrophysicist and American/Australian scientist now heads up a Christian community of academics called The
Simeon Network. He says: “Part of the magic of science, is uncovering the universe that God has made – pulling back the layers in a field that is very focused on detail and specific observations.” Another scientist quoted in the Southern Cross feature is Dr Adrian Paterson, the Executive Officer for the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO). Dr Paterson makes this very interesting comment: “(God is) beyond His creation … You can’t find God in a plant, but I think you can find his fingerprints.” Dr Paterson concludes: “You can look at something like Psalm 19 where the psalmist sees how the creation works together, how it resonates and speaks, but you can’t hear in words. You can look at that and be reminded that even with all the paradigm-changing things we’ve learnt, all the physics and medical knowledge we’ve accumulated in just 100 years, there are still so many unanswered questions because of the sheer size and glory of creation.”

Steve, Wendy find a new prayer ‘nest’ Way back when
ABOUT 16 years ago Steve Lynn rolled into town in his Winnebago intending to stop for a short time and then move on around Australia. Steve soon began to discover that God had other plans. At first he attended Port Macquarie Uniting Church and met a heap of new friends. One of his long time great friends was Rev Stephen Wilson, one of the two pastors at the Church. The ‘two Steves’ soon became partners in ‘Godly crime’, encouraging worship and calling the Churches of Port Macquarie to come together and pray for their city. Steve was part of a team that invited the leader of the Australian Prayer Network, Brian Pickering and a team of nationwide prayers and intercessors to join the locals for six, 40-hour Prayer Weekends. These weekends saw some supernatural prayer at strategic spots around Port Macquarie, the Hastings and Camden Haven. Over 120,000 hours of prayer were clocked-up over these prayer weekends. Healing of relationships between churches and their pastors, the breaking of curses from Vietnam, a dramatic drought-breaking prayer-meet on the Town Green and the adopting of a tourist slogan ‘God Lives Here’ by the tourist authorities were some of the amazing breakthroughs that have occurred while Steve has been in leadership in citywide prayer. During this time Steve was awarded a Pride of Workmanship Award from Rotary. Steve joined with the Rev David Curtis and Coral Bardell to see some amazing Citywide Prayer thrusts here in Port Macquarie and

around the mid and northern regions of NSW. Over the past couple of years Steve and David and Coral have seen the establishment of the Port Macquarie Healing Rooms in Gordon Street, which are already bringing much hope and healing to those in need. Five years ago Steve met and fell in love with Wendy Wrigley. Wendy was part of Grace’s worship team and has been an aged care nurse and nurse educator here in the Hastings. They were married in a beautiful wedding ceremony at Grace Church attended by 200 friends and family. Steve and Wendy have continued to seek God for their future and have now felt called to the Inverell area. They have bought the old Graman School, about 30kms north of Inverell and plan to establish a Prayer Retreat called Eagles Rest. Steve and Wendy were farewelled from Grace Church on Sunday, January 15 and we thank them for all they have contributed to our city over the years. With prayer you often don’t know what God has been doing, but we do have the utmost assurance that God is answering our prayers and watching over us and keeping unseen pain and tragedy from our city. Steve and Wendy will be greatly missed.

The Pier hosts Lime and Steel Equally at home on festival main-stages, at sweaty pubs or harmonizing around kitchen tables, Lime and Steel’s original songwriting gems have featured them in a range of songwriting awards, splashing on just enough paint to get a loving glimpse of the darker side of the Australian soul. Rhythms Magazine describes them as having “humour, pathos and infectious melodies”. Lime and Steel call themselves “Bogan bluegrass, with equal parts charm and cheap wine”. You can catch Lime and Steel at The Pier, Port Macquarie, on Friday, January 27. More info at www.limeandsteel.com

Lime and Steel: original songwriting gems, cut with equal parts charm and cheap wine
LIME and Steel will play the The Pier on Clarence, on Friday, January 27 as part of their January East Coast tour. This four-piece from the Blue Mountains have been unloading rusty station wagons at folk festivals from Woodford in Queensland to Cygnet in Tasmania, rolling out folk noir ballads and dust-kicking hoedowns to appreciative crowds all the way. Featuring rootsy grooves on the fiddle and banjo, along with thumping beats from a doghouse bass and drums, Lime and Steel take the Southern Bluegrass sound and blend it with Australian storytelling, gritty Irish folk and pubrock to come up with a unique home brewed feel.

The Searchers are coming with their ‘60s hits
The Searchers are coming By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC THE other legendary group from Liverpool’s 1960s are coming. The Searchers, who emerged alongside The Beatles in the 1960s, are now on their way to Port Macquarie with their new Australian Tour – ‘The Solid Gold Hits’. As one of Britain’s most-loved groups, there’s no wonder they are still touring and still filling seats today. “It’s been a long career so there’s a lot to cram into our time on stage,” said Frank Allen, The Searchers bass guitarist and vocalist. The two-hour show will include everything from the band’s biggest hits, smallest hits, and album tracks. “It’s the history of the band,” said Mr Allen. “Apart from singing songs, we also tell the audience things that have happened in our career including the experiences we had, we just have a great evening in each other’s company.” Frank Allen has been with The Searchers since 1964 and isn’t planning on stopping anytime soon. “We enjoy what we do, that’s why we still tour,” Mr Allen said. “People generally retire because they are only doing what they are doing to earn money until the point when they can retire and do the things they want to do. But the things that we want to do, are the things that

we have already been doing and getting paid for it, so it would seem pointless to retire. It would be boring. Music gives us a reason to get up in the morning.” The Searchers arose in the 1960s, and like The Beatles, their music was across the charts, including their hit songs ‘Sweets For My Sweet’, ‘Sugar And Spice’, ‘Needles And Pins’ - the Jackie De Shannon remake, ‘When You Walk In The Room’, and many more songs that are still popular today. “We were part of the most important period of pop music in British history when The Beatles changed everything forever,” said Mr Allen. The Searchers band members now include originals Frank Allen and John McNally on 6 string guitar, 12 string guitar and vocals, alongside newer members Spencer James (guitar synthesiser and lead vocals) and Scott Ottaway on drums. Australia is a second home for the band and they have been making regular stops Down Under since 1964. “For the last 16 years we’ve been coming to Australia for regular four to six-week tours every year,” Mr Allen said. “The Australians and the British have the same sense of humour.” The Searchers will be performing on Sunday, February 12, at the Glasshouse Port Macquarie. Aussie pride is oarsome
IT is the comradery, the challenge and the competition that keeps Macleay Valley local, Mignon Piper, training to be a medal-winning Australian athlete. For the past three years Mignon has competed in the Australian Dragon Boat representative team, the Auroras, winning silver medals in the International World Championships in Welland in Canada in 2015 and in the Asian Championships held in Adelaide in 2016. To paddle for the Auroras requires a lot of weekly and monthly training drills and both have to be submitted. This August Mignon will compete in Beijing in China and has a rigorous training schedule that sees her at the gym and on the water six days a week. “I like one day off,” she said, and laughed. “It’s a big commitment because I’m in a regional area and often travel to Sydney as there is a lot of training.” Her success at dragon boating, an ancient Chinese sport, is astronomical considering she only began paddling four years ago. At the time Mignon was playing baseball when a fellow player asked if she had ever tried dragon boating and suggested she gave it a go. Luckily for her, the Kempsey Macleay Dragon Boat Club, known affectionately as the River Rats, was her local club and a winner of many competitions. “I loved dragon boating from the first time,” Mignon said. “And I’ve never looked back.” She just loves being on the water, the paddling, the challenge and the friendship between her fellow team members. Fate stepped in at the State Dragon Boat Championships in Kawana in Queensland with Mignon’s first representative regatta, which resulted in a gold medal. While there she saw the Australian team

first time. And I’ve never looked back.
walk up on the podium one by one. “That will be me one day,” Mignon remembered thinking. Shortly after, she received an email from the Australian Dragon Boat Federation asking her if she was interested in joining the team. So Mignon put in an application, trained hard and then passed a rigorous fitness test. Soon after she received her invitation for the selection camp where all her training was put to
the test over a gruelling three days. She gained selection for the Australian team to go to Canada where they won four silver medals. After six months of well-earned rest and relaxation, Mignon received another expression of interest to see if she would be part of the Asian Championships. Once again the Auroras shone as bright as their namesake, winning three silver medals.
Competing for her country was far different than paddling on one of the Macleay Valley’s many rivers and creeks. “There you are on the start line, heart pounding through your chest, knowing this is no club regatta, you are paddling for your country,” Mignon said. “It’s overwhelming then all your training comes together and you do really well and that makes all the blood, sweat and tears worthwhile.” When it was her turn to walk up the podium and receive her medals for Australia, just as she had imagined a few short years before, Mignon was overwhelmed anew. “I was tearing up,” she said. “And felt extremely proud.” Mignon may relish competing but she also enjoys a leisurely kayak with friends. “I’ve been to places I didn’t know existed,” she said. “We live in a beautiful area, especially if you like being on the water.” Mignon has lived in the Macleay Valley for 21 years and loves its friendly people, slower pace of life and beautiful scenery. On Sunday January 29, Mignon will join the River Rats to compete in the Taree regatta hosted by the Manning River Dragons. The River Rats will also be sending a team to the Ord River Marathon in Western Australia in July.
K Worberry, Graham Platt, Peter Teiffel and Geoff Howard were the lucky losers. Saturday Pennant Trial game against Kew was a draw. Danny Murray and Allan ‘Jacko’ Jackson were winners, Les Perry and Graham Fairburn were happy to lose.

Sailing double-header
PORT Macquarie Sailing Club sailed a double header on Sunday followed by the 4th Club Championship. Dave Winter on Spica was the only catamaran for the morning race, and he completed the course with no problems. Race 3 for the monohulls had four starters. Kelly Miller and Scott Witchard in Big Bang had a close tussle all race with Simon and Elsa Gandy in Voyager, finishing 14 seconds ahead on Yardstick. Zac Jeffries sailed Jupiter for the 3rd place and Grady and Alice McNee in Shearwater had to retire with a broken stay. In an extremely close handicap result, Jupiter and Big Bang tied for first, and Voyager was just 9 seconds behind that. Spica again completed the course for the points for the catamarans in 4th club championship. Meanwhile, Frank O’Rourke sailed Dino for a 2nd outright at the Manning Marathon and Rohan Nosworthy also sailed there with his son Charlie on their NS14. The afternoon race saw Paul Robertson and Rob Barwick in Flembouyant take the win on yardstick. Shearwater, with her stay repaired, finished 2nd, 5 seconds ahead of Voyager.
