Make Friday ‘heartbreak free’ By SUE PATERICK

TOMMOROW (Friday, May 27) is national Fatality Free Friday with a goal of zero deaths on Australian roads, and motorists are urged to concentrate on driving safely. Since 2007 this Australian Road Safety Foundation campaign has urged all Australian drivers to consciously think about safety on the same day. The purpose of Australia’s only communitybased road safety program, is not only zero deaths but to encourage drivers to continue driving safely and incorporate this new outlook and behaviour on a permanent daily basis. The road toll for just one day is about 5.3 deaths, so if all Australians pledge to drive safely on Friday those lives will be saved. According to Kempsey Police Inspector, Mick Aldridge, the NSW road toll is up on the same time last year from 121 to 154, and since September 2015 there has been 13 fatalities between Kempsey, Coffs Harbour and Grafton. “If drivers can concentrate on safety for just one day it makes a big difference, and if they concentrate every time behind the wheel it will go a long way in reducing the road toll,” he said.

“We want drivers to make the right choice and better choices are driving to the conditions and concentrating on what they are doing.” While police are out there every day ensuring drivers make the right decisions and there are no fatalities, there will be a higher police presence on Fatality Free Friday targeting speed, drink driving, mobile phone use, not wearing seat belts and driving to the conditions. “Drivers need to concentrate on our roads especially because of all the road works on the Pacific Highway,” Inspector Aldridge added. Supporting the event, the NSW Centre for Road Safety and Kempsey Shire Council are FRONT PAGE AD raising awareness and having discussions with drivers in the lead up to the day. • Continued Page 3

Let’s have no tears this Friday

Brothers3, from left, Makirum, Tayzin and Shardyn Fahey-Leigh will be performing in Port Macquarie on June 11. They love the area and there is plenty of famioly history here. (Photo: JEM CRESSWELL)

Not just any ‘Port’ By LIZZIE McLEOD PORT Macquarie is far more than another tour stop-over for The X Factor favourites Brothers3. The trio, who shot to fame during the 2014 series of the hit talent show, revealed to Your Local Independent that Port is a ‘second home’ for the family. “It’s really weird because our mum (Alita Fahey) is from Port Macquarie,” said middle aged brother Tayzin. “Our mum was brought up in Port Macquarie. I’ve been to the area quite a lot and we have watched a lot of local independent shows in Port. We love Port. It is a beautiful area.” The three brothers Makirum, Tayzin and Shardyn Fahey-Leigh are currently on a national tour and will be performing locally at the Glasshouse on June 11. “I guess the most major thing that has happened since X Factor is this tour,” said Tayzin. “It means we can spread our music around Australia, which is what we wanted to do since the word go. For us it’s the best thing ever to perform at regional stages because we always had the vision in mind that we are from Mudgee

and we never got to see the big acts when we were living there. “So I guess the idea for this tour was ‘let’s go regional’. Let’s give these small towns and regional areas a feeling of going to a big show and being involved in a bigger production, which they don’t usually get to see. “I think we get more of a buzz out of the regional areas because they appreciate what you do.” From The X Factor to present, the dream is still the same for the three brothers. “It hasn’t really changed,” said Tayzin. “I guess the only change in the goal of the career is just to keep going higher and higher. With The X Factor, we originally went on with the idea that it is a national stage. We now have that exposure and the next goal is international.” Being a part of a family band can always have its ups and downs, explains Tayzin. “The plus and minus of being in a family band is the same thing…working with your family,” Tayzin explained. “The positive is that you work with family and they all have your best interests at heart but the negative is that you’re working with family and they know every way in the world to annoy you.” Coming from a country folk background, the band isn’t afraid of the pop end spectrum

that took Taylor Swift to new stages and new audiences. “As a band we have always been on the country side and it’s really hard to break free of that,” said Tayzin. “We did pop on The X Factor and like Taylor Swift, that’s where we want to see ourselves heading in the future. I think we want to create our own genre - a bit like Mumford and Sons. “You listen to a Mumford and Sons song and it doesn’t sound like country or pop, it sounds like Mumford and Sons. So our dream is to sound like Brothers3.” The ‘Brothers Never Part’ east coast 32date tour will be visiting both regional and big cities around Australia and audiences won’t be disappointed. “You can definitely expect a fun night,” said Tayzin. “They can expect Brothers3 and they will get an insight of our life. So instead of having a show, they will be taken on a journey, is what we like to say.” Brothers3 will be performing at the Glasshouse on June 11 from 8pm. Tickets are $55 and $50 for concession. For tickets call 02 6581 8888 or for more information visit http://www.glasshouse.org. au/Home

• From Page 1 Council will also hold an information stall in Kempsey’s Clyde Street Mall today (Thursday, May 26) between 9am and 3pm to offer road safety tips and giveaways. Drivers will also be invited to sign a pledge, along with over 130,000 other Australians. Council’s Community Projects Officer Safety, Adam Best, says the theme for this year’s event is ‘The keys to road safety are in your hands’ and he urges drivers to take responsibility for their actions. “By individually reaching drivers and encouraging them to think about their behaviour we can collectively make the roads safer,” he said. When the jointly-funded Australian and NSW governments’ Frederickton to Eungai Pacific Highway upgrade was recently officially opened, it bypassed the site of Australia’s worst road accident. Thirty-five people were killed and 41 injured when two full passenger buses collided on the Pacific Highway at Clybucca north of Kempsey in 1989, just three days before Christmas. The $675 million Frederickton to Eungai upgrade will provide 26.5 kilometres of fourlane divided road, but finishing work will still be required at the Frederickton interchange and north of the Stuarts Point interchange. This work is expected to take about three months to complete. For more information on Fatality Free Friday go to www.fatalityfreefriday.com

Mayor’s a charity hit

PORT Macquarie-Hastings Mayor Peter Besseling has shown his skills extend to the golf course. The Mayor was part of a team that took out the social golfer’s division at the recent 2016 Hastings Education Fund charity golf day at the Port Macquarie Golf Club. Sponsored by the Port Macquarie Golf Club and their veteran golfers, the annual event sees a huge boost to the funds distributed to local students in the form of grants to assist their start in training in vocational education or tertiary studies at university. “The success of the event shows us how the community has embraced the need to invest in local youth,” says HEF Chairman, Peter Cuskelly. “Increasingly, we see that further education is beyond local students without the help and support of their local community.” A field of 112 keen golfers led the charge for a ‘shot-gun’ start at the 18 hole event, with a mix of both veteran and social golfers vying for the top golfing prize of a weekend golfing package in the Hunter. The top point score of 120 went to the team of Fred and Adri Fouche with Wayne Douglass and Corrina Munro. Andrew Goulding managed to land a hole in one on the 16th hole.

LETTER WEEK

Brought to you by

WHO’D have known? Apparently we have a federal election coming up? Yes I know, we are all aware there is an election in July and we all have to think about who we are going to vote for. That’s the whole point! Are you able to make an informed choice about who you vote for in either Cowper or Lyne? I highly doubt it. Part of our job here is to keep our community informed and believe me we would like to. The problem? Apart from our sitting candidates from the National Party for Lyne and Cowper and the Greens candidate for Cowper; not one of the other candidates has bothered to respond to my communication. Not for want of trying from our end. I have personally tried to contact all parties concerned prior to the official announcement and weekly since to absolutely no avail. It’s pathetic! Our readers want to know more about the who’s who and what they stand for leading up to the election. I don’t want to fill the paper with election propaganda but it would be great to at least give our readers the opportunity to understand more about our standing candidates. So over the next few weeks if you think we are lacking a complete picture of the elections and what it will mean for our electorates I suggest you lobby the candidates if you can. Let me know if you have any luck. It would be great to see their faces!

Many weapons needed to fight drugs IN response to T Hodge’s letter in ‘Your Local Independent’ of May 19, I note a statement attributed to me – ‘Drugs and alcohol are the major reason that first Nation (Indigenous people) have the problems they have’. I have read my copy of Your Local Independent for April 28 in which my letter was published and cannot find this statement attributed to me. It seems T Hodge has used my text and embellished it to add a slant

that was never in there. My text read ‘However these problems affect our citizens of all heritages, no one is exempt. The major cause of these problems is drug and alcohol abuse.’ The event that caused me to write my letter was the tragic death of a young woman and the hospitalisation of four or five young adults at a dance party. If memory serves me right, the deceased was a tertiary educated

professional, I think a pharmacist or research chemist, yet she took a party pill made who knows where from who knows what. In the three years since the survey T Hodge has quoted statistics from, there has been far too many deaths and hospitalisations of our young people from these party pills. Education did not help those people. In the death of the young woman, I have not heard nor read

of anyone being charged with her manslaughter. In case you are not aware, the ice epidemic is in our high schools. This is another scourge which needs urgent policing before the problem escalates. Give the police the powers they need to stop the drug trade. B Thompson Port Macquarie

Air quality concern I ENJOYED a lovely stay in Port Macquarie during my holiday-cumresearch tenure in Australia. The natural beauty of this area is outstanding and your town is vibrant and interesting. As an environmental researcher studying atmospheric air quality, I was disheartened to note the high visible concentration of saturated air pollution. The horizons in all directions were constantly shrouded in a veiled haze. When I questioned your friendly locals, I noted that many were not aware of the SRM (Solar Radiation

Management) program being conducted in this country for well over a decade. I was alarmed to discover that your skies are bombarded with much greater intensity and frequency than we experience in our skies back home in Canada. Unfortunately I noticed that Australians are a lot more complacent about this environmental issue than we Canadians. There is much more public discussion about the pros and cons of geoengineering the skies to combat global warming. I urge your residents to do some simple research and ask your politicians (to borrow an Aussie

THUMBS

phrase) ‘what the hell is going on!’ Please look up the latest research by geophysicist Dr Marvin J Herndon published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health. www.geoengineeringwatch. org is a good help too! I look forward to visiting this region again next year! Monty Smith Montreal, Canada

‘Doggy’ volunteers

WITH reference to the comment made by Matt Rogers in the article a few issues ago about people taking too many doggy waste bags at once

and leaving none for others, I’d like to make a suggestion that Port Macquarie-Hastings Council consider utilising Taree Council’s program of volunteers to monitor the usage of the dog waste bags provided by council. I’m sure there would be enough ‘volunteer’ dog owners who frequent a particular site, like say Port’s Nobby’s Beach, to monitor the need and would happily replace the roll when required. That way, there would not be any unforeseen delays waiting for council employees to get around to the job. Stephanie Bough Port Macquarie

Big bands set to blast off By CHRISTINA PARKIN

A WHOLE weekend of free music is about to resound around Port Macquarie’s Town Green and the Glasshouse forecourt. “Whether you’re into jazz, funk, soul, R and B or free live music of any kind, you’ll definitely find something to tap your toes to over the three days,” says John Morrison, originator and artistic director for the ‘Big Band Blast’. Now in its fourth year, the Big Band Blast will ‘blast off’ with a free concert from 5pm in the Glasshouse forecourt on Friday May 27. More than 600 musicians from 32 bands will play across four stages over the three days. Port Macquarie Big Band Blast Artistic Director, John Morrison, said the three-day program features three big concerts, nonstop performances, jam sessions, a riverside music parade and workshops for registered participants. John Morrison, big brother to jazz trombonist, James Morrison, has a long history of sharing his love of ‘big band’ music with school-age kids and community bands through development workshops. “This is also a ‘conference’ for musicians and many will attend the workshops we have organised,” he said. “We’ve got bands coming from Bunbury in Western Australia, South Australia, New Zealand and we even had an enquiry from Poland – this event is getting bigger and better each year.” With 30 bands playing across four stages all day, Port Macquarie will be in ‘Bandemonium’ from 9.30am to dusk. Markets and food stalls will add to the festival atmosphere on the Town Green and Glasshouse Forecourt. The weekend will have a Motown Funk theme this year, with a free concert on Town Green on Saturday night from 7.30pm that will

Pictured recently to promote the Big Band Blast were, from left, John Morrison with Nathanael Bruggeman on saxophone, Isaac Brugeman (trumpet), Sarah Morrison on trumpet, Daron Bruggeman on trombone, Jonah Garvan on drums, Chris Clark on soprano saxophone and Councillor Rob Turner playing tenor saxophone feature Lionel Cole, nephew of the late great Nat King Cole, and cousin to Natalie Cole. Lionel has previously performed in Port Macquarie at Tastings on Hastings and made his own mark on The Voice 2014 working with Ricky Martin and Kylie Minogue. Lionel will team up with John Morrison and the 30-piece 3B Horns to get the crowds up dancing with high energy rhythms, deep bass and blaring horns. “Think James Brown, Stevie Wonder, Hot

THE COWPER REPORT

Local is seeking ‘secrets’ of CPR

With Luke Hartsuyker

Federal Member for Cowper

By CHRISTINA PARKIN

Gunilla Haydon in her role as a lecturer in nursing studies at the University of Newcastle, Port Macquarie Campus

We need to learn from the circumstances from success stories to understand what we can do better

A UNIVERSITY of Newcastle Nursing Faculty lecturer, Ms Gunilla Haydon, is keen to speak with anyone who has survived cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Gunilla, from Port Macquarie, is preparing her research for her doctorate in the topic ‘What is the experience of surviving CPR?’. “The surprising reality is that less than 14 percent of patients survive the experience of being brought back from ‘the dead’,” says Ms Haydon. “It’s not so hard to re-start the heart, but much harder to keep it running once you get the patient to hospital. “The perception is that if you get CPR, you will live. With most cardiac arrests occurring in the home, if someone knows CPR, then they are more likely to help. “CPR is more effective in cases of drowning, overdose or hypothermia because there is usually nothing wrong with your heart. “However, with a heart attack where there is a pumping problem, such as clots constricting the arteries to the heart or a cardiac arrest resulting from electrical dysfunction, the outcome is much more complicated. “We do know, however, that it is incredibly painful because the ribs are invariably broken.” The thinking behind how CPR is best performed has changed over the years and the advantages of using the traditional ‘prechordial thump’ has been shown to not be evidence based, with immediate defibrillation is more likely to result in return of spontaneous circulation. “There is also the dilemma that some patients out of the 14% who survive CPR become vegetative after only three minutes of CPR and some who readily return to where they were before the experience,” explains Ms Haydon. “A literature review of the situation shows no one has really asked the question – what

happens when a person is revived after receiving CPR? “Death is such a taboo subject in our society. People need to have that discussion about the circumstances where CPR might need to be performed. “We need to learn from the circumstances from success stories to understand what we can do better regarding person-centred care during their recovery.” Gunilla came to nursing later in life after working as the ‘Camel lady’ and dog trainer.

She began with a Certificate III in Aged Care in 2008, then studied a Bachelor in Nursing with the University of Newcastle at the Port Macquarie Campus, followed by an Honours year while working part-time. While working in oncology and ICU, Gunilla has combined her work with lecturing part-time until this year when she started lecturing full-time while studying her doctorate. If you have survived CPR, Gunilla would like to hear from you on 02 6581 8357 or by email at gunilla.haydon@newastle.edu.au

ONE area that is particularly important to me is dementia care. I attended the opening of the expanded Hastings District Respite Centre (HDRC) in Port Macquarie where they are employing innovative strategies in respite services – particularly for dementia. Caring for a loved one at home can be stressful, exhausting at times and restrict a carer’s ability to do the things we often take for granted; be it going on a holiday, taking care of business obligations or even just going shopping for an afternoon. Respite care, such as the services provided by HDRC, not only give the carer a break, but provides a stimulating social environment for dementia suffers, who can often feel isolated when they are being cared for at home. Many people find that a regular break means they can recharge and avoid burn out while opening up social opportunities for a person with dementia or a disability. For 30 years now HDRC has provided these services for those with younger onset dementia, older sufferers, people with disabilities and their carers. Its new combined services centre will increase access to the best diagnostic services, treatment, support and advice. The centre also includes tea rooms, a gym and a sensory garden with chickens, guinea pigs and fragrant flowers and herbs. The mid-north coast has some of the highest rates of dementia in the state and demand is only going to increase as Port Macquarie’s population increases. In the Port Macquarie area, the Australian Bureau of Statistics identified there are 3342 people under 65 who are disabled, so services such as HDRC are so important. To hear what some of the clients who attended the opening say about respite care really brings home what an amazing role services such as HDRC play in the lives of the people who have dementia and their families. Those who use respite services report improved wellbeing and a sense of independence through taking part in group or individual activities in a social setting such as painting, dancing or theatre performances. This is why we need to continue to build on the partnership between the Federal and State Governments, local councils and volunteer groups who come together to make respite centres such as HDRC work so effectively and drive their success. Health experts worldwide agree on the importance of allowing people to stay in their homes longer, whether they have an illness such as dementia, or a degenerative disease or disability. But this can only happen if there is an availability of respite services such as the Hastings District Respite Centre and their 30 dedicated staff and 25 volunteers.

Co-op a sweet boost for HEF

Tim Walker (left), Marketing and Communications Manager for the Hastings Co-op with Ivan Batchelor from Saxby’s soft drinks

By CHRISTINA PARKIN Port Macquarie Art and Craft Centre member, Kerry Burns, showing off some leather craft with Rosalie McIlrick weaving on her loom

Crafty way to spend Saturday

THE Port Macquarie Arts and Craft Centre located at the roundabout at the bottom of Lake Road, is one of the icons of the local townscape. The Centre has been located there since 1980, although it was first established in 1974. Fully self-funded, there are a variety of groups who meet throughout the week and Saturdays. There are no paid tutors, but members share their skills with newcomers who wish to learn or improve on a particular craft. Participants can select from various art forms – portraits, sculpture, landscape drawing, to silver smithing, lapidary, leatherwork, pottery, spinning, knitting, crochet to weaving and woodwork.

On Saturday, May 28, from 9am – 3pm, you can come along and view some of the ‘crafty’ people and their work and view demonstrations of the various techniques. “We have a whole range of ages – even a 90-year-old whose craft is silver smithing and he has a wealth of knowledge and experience to pass on,” says Mavourna Collits, President of the Port Macquarie Art and Craft Centre. “It’s almost like the traditional model of a guild where everyone helps each other and shares their skills. I’d like to encourage anyone to come along to our open day next Saturday.” For further information, you can contact Mavourna on 6583 6570.

LOCALS helping locals – the Hastings Coop has reaffirmed its commitment to the local tertiary students of our area, who apply for grants with the Hastings Education Fund (HEF). A joint promotion known as ‘Summer of Saxbys’ between Hastings Co-op and Saxbys has culminated in a $1000 funding injection for the Hastings Education Fund. Hastings Co-op chief executive officer Allan Gordon said both organisations wholeheartedly supported the concept of enabling local students to further their education, training or chosen vocation and congratulated HEF on its achievements since establishing in 2011. “We’re really pleased to be able to help out, but our valued customers also deserve our thanks and gratitude for purchasings Saxbys soft drinks during the campaign late last year,” he said. Saxbys managing director Ian Turner said he was proud to support the HEF and it’s admirable objectives. “We were also really pleased to work with Hastings Co-op in this initiative, where five cents

from the sale of every 125ml bottle and 10 cents from four packs went to the HEF,” he said. HEF Chairman Peter Cuskelly explained that funds donated by individuals, local businesses and organisations such as Hastings Co-op and Saxbys are managed by a committee of local volunteers and distributed in the form of reimbursements for computer hardware/ software, textbooks, uniforms, equipment, tools of trade, travel and accommodation. “The fund’s impact can make a major difference in helping get students through initial difficulties and financial hurdles in those important early aspirational steps,” Mr Cuskelly said. “The HEF is especially appreciative of the ongoing support of local businesses who continue to invest in the future of local students who very often will eventually return to our area and bring their skills with them. Hastings Co-op has been a long-term supporter and sponsor of HEF, with annual donations and specially marked collection tins at each of its 13 businesses across the Hastings in 2014-2015.

I love being able to use my skills to assist with people’s biggest transitions in life. Moving on from one chapter to the next is a big step. I have met so many wonderful people along the way. What do you like least about your work? When a buyer misses out! Unfortunately there is only one successful purchaser for each property. However I am a strong believer that everything happens for a reason. How do you start your day? Coffee! My mornings are busy with packing school lunches and school runs, so coffee helps. I then settle in to the office by working through my emails and discussing hot topics with the staff at Hudson. What do you do in your spare time? I spend my spare time with family and friends. My son Jacob loves to get out and about at every opportunity. So we are always on the go! What is the achievement you are most proud of? Buying Hudson Real Estate and becoming the youngest owner/operator of a real estate office in Port Macquarie. It has been a goal for around ten years and I am proud that my determination paid off.

We do not need more bureaucrats MOST readers would have heard of the Local Government amalgamation process currently underway, with the changes affecting Taree, Gloucester and Great Lakes to our south. There have been no NSW Government announcements affecting an amalgamation for the Port Macquarie-Hastings Local Government Area. Aside from the amalgamations happening elsewhere, the NSW Government is planning further changes that will affect our local community directly, particularly surrounding the way decisions are made around infrastructure. The NSW Government plans to introduce what is known as a ‘Joint Organisation’ (JO) that will be made up of representatives from midnorth coast councils. The JO will have its own administration, separate to that of Port Macquarie-Hastings Council, under the control of an executive officer and paid for by local rate payers from each council. Mid-north coast councils currently meet together, on a voluntary basis, to consider issues of common importance, however councils will soon be forced to join a JO under NSW Legislation and its decisions will be binding. It will effectively be another tier of government. It will mean that state bureaucrats and councillors from other areas will have the power to make decisions affecting our community,

INSIDE COUNCIL

ARE you annoyed when someone is telling a story and another person jumps in with the punchline? I know I am. Often I have sympathy for the person telling the story. It happened a week or so back. The person telling the story could only respond meekly: “You’ve stolen my thunder”. Again I had sympathy for the bloke telling the story. If you’ve heard it a hundred times before, it’s only polite that you should keep quiet and laugh in the appropriate places. Then I thought about the expression ‘you’ve stolen my thunder’. Here is an expression that can be traced to one man, one place and one time. It refers to a person who has stolen an idea and usually claims it. I’ve met a few in my time. I hope I’m not one of them. But the words can be traced to a bloke called John Dennis. The year was 1704 at the Drury Lane Theatre, London. Until that time, theatres had used a variety of methods to produce the sound of thunder – and a lot of other sounds. I don’t know what sort of a playwright Dennis was, but his play ‘Appius and Virginia’ was a failure, except for one aspect. Until that time sounds were made by rolling

with no means of local ratepayers holding them responsible. Local communities want simple avenues to have input into matters of infrastructure and services that they see as priorities. What is often forgotten is that they also want to have clear lines of accountability for these important decisions that are being made. This is why we have elections, so that those elected to represent our community can be judged on their decisions and their future plans for our area. To transfer local decision making roles to organisations who are not directly elected by our community, removes this accountability and weakens our democracy. There are already too many layers of government and a vast, complex web of associated bureaucracies. We need more accountability and less levels of governance. Forcing local government to add yet another level of bureaucracy and governance, is a step in the wrong direction.

POSITIVE NSW economic outlook: The NSW economy remains the nation’s best performer according to the latest ANZ Stateometer, despite slowing momentum along the east coast. The monthly report showed that economic conditions in NSW were still strong despite a cyclical slowdown in some key indicators. ANZ noted that the economic outlook remains favourable for NSW. It stated that economic growth in NSW should remain above the national average this year and next due to factors such as a ‘pipeline of major projects and urban rejuvenation works’. Celebrating our multicultural community: Fundings now available for events that help bring communities together and celebrate our cultural diversity. metal balls or shaking sheets of metal, but Dennis came up with a new sound for his production. Some say it was balls rolling around a mustard bowl. But ‘Appius and Virginia’ closed well before time, according to Dennis. Sometime later Dennis attended the same theatre to see another play. I understand it was ‘Macbeth’. The writer of this play had a bit more success and people even now talk about it. But - you guessed it - they used the thunder that Dennis had produced for ‘Appius and Virginia’. Now, I can’t say exactly what Dennis is supposed to have done, but apparently he made a bit of a spectacle of himself. The stories vary, but he is said to have stood up and said something like: “That is my thunder. The villains will play my thunder, but not my play.”

Variations on the words abound. I think everybody was so taken aback that nobody thought to shove a tape recorder under his nose to get the exact words, but I think you get the drift. Meantime, the writer of ‘Macbeth’ has gotten much praise, but the bloke in the front stalls who interrupted the performance has almost been forgotten - except for the comment ‘steal my thunder’. My big dictionary quotes John Dennis as saying: “Damn them. They will not let my play run, but they steal my thunder.” It just goes to show that two people will come up with two versions of what was said (and you thought it was only the newspapers that couldn’t get it right). The big dictionary has six pages on the word thunder, which has been in print since at least the year 888 and has been spelt various ways. It includes such expressions as ‘thunder carriage’, ‘thunder drop’, ‘thunder house’ and ‘thunder snake’. I couldn’t find ‘thunder box’, but I did find ‘thunderer’, a person employed to imitate thunder by some mechanical means. But, whatever you are doing, don’t steal John Dennis’ thunder. lauriebarber.com;lbword@midcoast.com.au

The Hartsuyker business story “

Unless you’ve been in small business, it’s hard to really understand the difficulty of managing all the different responsibilities that fall on the shoulders of a small business owner

IN the few short months since the new federal electorate boundaries were confirmed, Nationals Member for Cowper Luke Hartsuyker has taken large steps to establishing himself as a political force in the Port Macquarie-Hastings region. His understanding of the small business sector has played a key role in building his credibility and opening lines of communication with local business owners. Hartsuyker hails from a small business family, and he’s been personally involved in the family’s businesses over many years. Since becoming an MP in 2001, he has not been involved in day to day operational matters, but he still maintains a keen interest the health and growth of the family’s North Coast tourism business. Mr Hartsuyker believes his small business background has been invaluable for his work as a regional MP. “Small business is the heart and soul of regional communities. I think it is important to have representatives in the Parliament that understand the challenges and rewards of owning and operating a small business,” Mr Hartsuyker said.

Member for Cowper Luke Hartsuyker, second from right, with a local small business success story - Lou Kesby and staff from Lou’s Cafe in Kempsey “Unless you’ve been in small business, it’s hard to really understand the difficulty of managing all the different responsibilities that fall on the shoulders of a small business owner. Often small business owners are the HR manager,

bookkeeper, cleaner, secretary, and Chairman of the Board all rolled into one. “The tax cuts and other changes announced in the Budget will go some way to reducing this burden and making our small businesses more

competitive. “There’s always more we can do, but I am proud to be part of a Government that is taking the needs of the small business community seriously.”

Nella a passionate leader

Don’t doubt the power of prayer NINETEEN years ago a teenage girl hung herself from a tree in the old historic cemetery. Following this tragedy the local churches were asked to pray. A group of about 20 people from several Churches met at the sight of the suicide in the old cemetery and prayed. As we stood around the gravestone from where the girl jumped to her death, we noted the council had already lopped the tree so this could not happen here again. As we prayed, we were led to a passage in the Bible from Isaiah 61:3 “… and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair.” We felt a heavy spirit of despair had descended on Port Macquarie and began to pray against this oppressive spirit. As we prayed, to our amazement a sudden rush of wind swept through the cemetery (yes I know this would make a good ‘Midsummer Murder’ story). There had been almost no wind and suddenly there was a strong wind bending the trees and rattling the leaves. We all stopped praying and looked up and were aware that God was doing something significant at this moment. We continued to pray for some time and concluded our prayer by singing a song of

praise to God. Later whilst reading through the historic record of the graves in the cemetery in a book produced by the Port Macquarie Historical Society ‘The Winding Sheet’, I read that the person who had died and was buried at the gravesite where the girl suicided was a man who had several misfortunes in the 1800s and was presumed to have suicided. Coincidence or what? We also found later when speaking to the local police that there had been no suicides in Port Macquarie for the next 6 months following the girl’s sad death and the prayer time in the cemetery. The Apostle Paul said to the Church in Colossae, “Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful. And pray for us too….” (Colossians 4:2) (If in need of help - call Lifeline 131 114 or Beyond Blue 1300 22 4636)

in the right place. In Nella’s case, her friends extend to political leaders from all sides of parliament, community leaders, business people and others with what would normally be noted in having disparate interests. They are nevertheless united behind Nella in the causes she chooses, notwithstanding what may be their violent philosophical objections on other matters. Her ethos that nothing comes without hard work, and her fundamentally Christian perspective in everything she does, has it roots from her arrival in Australia at the age of seven as the daughter of Italian parents who spoke no English. She spent her childhood in the suburb of Enfield, in Sydney. She was raised in a Christian home. Nella is a committed Christian and has been involved in churches all her life. She is a qualified accountant and manages a legal practice in Sydney. She is married with two children. She has been a broadcaster, a music director, a business manager, and sits on the board of a number of associations. She co-founded the Anti-Amalgamation movement in NSW. She is a grass roots campaigner and a voice for her community. To those that know her, she is in every sense the best of operators to have on your team. She is supported by her husband and her family in everything she does.

NELLA Halls is the Christian Democratic Party’s (CDP) lead senate candidate for New South Wales and you will be able to meet Nella at the Frederickton Christian Life Centre at 1824 Yarrabandinni Rd, Frederickton at 7pm on Tuesday, June 14. Nella is an inspirational leader who has never been afraid of hard work. To those that know her closely, she is a passionate motivator who calls people to activity. Assembling a group of people around her that become united in her vision is one of her greatest strengths. To her employers past and present she has built divisions of businesses, shown extraordinary insight, and always been able to identify and pre-empt issues so that crises have already been averted or attenuated. In this respect, she is a strategic thinker in every sense of the word. Moreover, she is a woman of steadfast principles and character. Nella has compassion for those in need, demonstrates great selflessness for others, and never seeks to take advantage of those less fortunate than herself for her own benefit. Nella is a hard worker. She has no sense of expectancy, no sense of entitlement, but a desire to transform situations through hard work, determination, advocacy, and changing people’s perspective to see what the real drivers are in any given situation. Nella’s openness and raw honesty is an infectious attribute to all those that know her, and it is rapidly obvious that her heart is always

All the Good stuff in our Community

Coastside Church celebrates 35th birthday COASTSIDE Church just turned 35, so happy birthday to us! What started as a dream out at Lighthouse Beach in 1981 has grown to a church that transforms lives, builds families and positively impacts a community. Coastside Church began its story as Port Macquarie Christian Outreach Centre under the leadership of Pastor David and Marilyn, who led it for eleven years, followed by Pastors Alan and Cherryl who led it for five years and finally, by us, Pastors Mark and Sheree, who have led it for

nearly nineteen years – yay us! Mark and I were also the youth pastors during both the first and second pastor’s time at the church, so we’ve been around for most of Coastside Church’s life! Twelve years ago we made the step to change the name of ‘Port Macquarie Christian Outreach Centre’ as we wanted a name that clearly identified us as a church, and we live in one of the best coastal places in Australia, so in 2004 ‘Coastside Church’ was born! It’s been an exciting and challenging journey,

Homeless need voting to matter

GIVEN there are more than 100,000 Australians without a home on any given night including 210 in Port Macquarie (according to 2011 ABS statistics), major charities have highlighted that the issue of Port Macquarie’s homeless rate will continue to rise if reducing homelessness is not made an election campaign priority. The largest providers of homelessness services across Australia have joined forces to call on all political parties to make reducing homelessness a national priority. In a joint letter to the four party leaders, the major charities Anglicare, Mission Australia, Salvation Army, St Vincent de Paul, UnitingCare Australia and Wesley Mission demanded a commitment to halving homelessness by 2025. The organisations have also launched a petition to generate public support for the campaign during the Federal Election and invited the party leaders to a forum with their clients in June. On any given night over 100,000 Australians are homeless – including over 44,000 children or young people. And each year more than 200,000 people seek help from homelessness services. The numbers are growing and the

organisations say it needs Federal Government leadership to reverse that trend. They’ve urged each party to commit to expanding prevention and early intervention services. These should include strategies aimed at identified risk factors and population groups including women and children escaping domestic and family violence, young people leaving care, and older people in the private rental market. Catherine Yeomans, CEO Mission Australia said: “In a prosperous nation like Australia there are adequate resources to ensure everyone has a home. Yet we have unacceptably high, and growing, rates of homelessness. “We know what works to fix homelessness. Prevent people in high risk groups from becoming homeless, fund evidence-based programs for people who are already homeless and ensure enough homes for people on low incomes. “We can halve homelessness because we know what needs to be done. But it requires strong leadership, a commitment from all governments to increase funding and to guarantee it over the next five years.”

filled with many triumphs and it’s still our passion to be a church that is nothing like people are expecting. And we are not your average church! We are not an insular club that cares about ‘us four and no more’; we don’t act like we are superior or have it all together, or that we have some exclusive membership. We have one requirement when coming to Coastside Church and that is that you come as you are. That’s it. And as we celebrate turning 35,

I know that the dreams and the plans for our church’s future are alive and flourishing and that we will continue to see people’s lives transformed, young people find their purpose and a community that will continue to benefit from us being here. Every week our story continues, new people find their place with us and exciting things happen (like our new Coastside Kidz graffiti art mural)! So, happy birthday Coastside Church – you are awesome! - Sheree Minturn (Lead Pastor Coastside Church)

Enterta nment

WEEKLY Castle sings for charity IAN Castle has been referred to as the ‘Michael Buble’ of the Hastings, so if you appreciate good music, then the weekend of June 4 and 5 at the Players Theatre is just for you. Ian is a popular vocal coach and accompanies ‘Blue Hypothesis’, a local band with a jazz/ soul/’Blues Brothers’ sound which commits to one gig a month and will appear at the Big Band Blast, the annual Hospital Fete and the Three Rivers Regatta in August. Many will know Ian from his duos with Amanda Gordon at the Port Macquarie-Hastings Town Band concerts. Two matinees commencing at 2pm at the Players Theatre in Port Macquarie and entitled ‘Music for Life’, are being organised to raise funds for the Kokoda Challenge Youth Foundation (KCYP). On Saturday, you will be entertained by a range of students that Ian tutors. They will present items ranging from musical theatre, to contemporary pop and include vocal ensembles. Many are school students gearing up for their HSC music presentations. Sunday brings a variety of items including the delights of Sarah Morabito, Ian Castle and the ‘big band’ sound of Blue Hypothesis. As a fundraiser for the Kokoda Challenge Youth Foundation, there will also be raffle tickets available for sale at the intermission afternoon tea. KCYP differs from most youth development programs because it’s a long-term, 12 to 14-month commitment that includes a period of physical training and mentoring in preparation for trekking in Papua New Guinea to walk the Kokoda Trail.

New on-line RSA training undertake online refresher training prior to their expiry date, and will then be issued with a new five year competency card. Refresher training was a recommendation of the 2013 independent review of the Liquor Act to keep skills up to date. Liquor & Gaming NSW is currently finalising online RSA and RCG refresher training courses which will soon be made available for holders of expiring photo competency cards. Online refresher training will be the only way that a person’s expiring competency card can be renewed. Completing a full course through an approved training provider prior to the expiry of a person’s card will not extend the expiry date on their current card. Holders of expiring photo competency cards will be sent reminder notices via SMS and email to undertake online refresher training prior to their card expiry date. The reminders will include a weblink to access the online training portal. If card holders have changed their contact details since receiving their card they should update them via the weblink on the L&GNSW website.

LIQUOR & Gaming NSW will soon introduce compulsory online refresher training for holders of expiring responsible service of alcohol (RSA) and responsible conduct of gambling (RCG) photo competency cards. RSA training is mandatory for everyone in NSW who sells, serves and supplies alcohol and RCG training is mandatory for people who work in hotels or registered clubs and have gaming machine duties. Five year photo competency cards have been issued since August 2011 to persons who completed RSA and RCG training to work in the liquor and gaming industries. Prior to that RSA/RCG holders were issued with paper certificates, which have been progressively phased out and holders required to undertake new training to upgrade to a photo competency card. The last paper certificates will expire on 30 June 2016. The first five year photo competency cards will start expiring from August 22, 2016. Holders of expiring photo competency cards who wish to continue to work in the industry will be required to pay a $35 prescribed fee to

Your Local Independent ‘discovers’ the birth of Origin

By DON HORNE

STATE of Origin rugby league between NSW and Queensland is all about passion, pride and a driving will to win. The Maroons had a record of nine consecutive series victories. The sequence ended in 2014 with a Blues victory. It is believed that Queensland regarded that loss as an aberration, and came back in 2015 with passion, to reclaim what they believe rightfully belongs to them. There must be a foundation for this northern Origin success story. Climate? Water? Sunshine? Bananas? No daylight saving? I don’t think so. Reaching back into our colonial past, and using a mix of facts and fractured history, I have found a possible foundation for this northern football dominance. It started with Sir Thomas Brisbane, who was Governor of NSW from 1821 until 1825. By 1824 the Colony was becoming overcrowded with convicts. Free settlers were getting a little bored with their dreary existence in Sydney town. A solution was needed for both problems. Thomas had an idea. He always had a passion for football played with the round ball. History shows that the rules for round ball football were established at Eton College in 1815. Thomas sorely missed the excitement and spectacle of his favourite sport which did not exist in dreary NSW. He called in his Colonial Secretary Frederick Goulburn to discuss an idea. However he didn’t expect enthusiastic support from Fred because of past animosity surrounding Fred’s duties. Thomas had accused Fred of exceeding his authority. Fred naturally disagreed. “Fred, our people need some sort of a lift,” suggested Sir Thomas. “Something they can look forward to. I’ve got an idea. Let’s put on football between the soldiers and the convicts.” “Thomas you can’t mix the two groups because of protocol,” retorted Frederick. “And besides, the soldiers will be all over them.Too fit and aggressive for the convicts.” Thomas: “Fred, Fred, you know the convicts are pretty fit with all the work we make them do.

Bowls ROUND UP Wauchope Men’s

SATURDAY saw the first and second rounds in the Wauchope Pairs Championships contested. The morning games were won by Andy Beazley and Peter McDonald, Phil Saville and John Borg, Peter Ostler and Paul Ireland, Garry Rudge andTim Renshall, Bill Reid and Ken Ansley, Col Parkes and Peter Lithou, John Lewis and Paul Harrison. In the afternoon quarter-finals Peter Laurie and Ron Sharman won 26-16, Sav and John Borg won 22-15, Bill Reid and Ken Ansley 32-15 and Allen Lewis and Paul Harrison 23-16. On Wednesday we had 24 players turn out for our single entry, club select triples. Winners on the day with +21 were Earl Deb, Keith Clayworth and Mick Baker, while the runners up were a couple of visitors in Ray Rumbel (Comboyne) and Jim McGaw (Penrith) along with Peter McLeod on +7. Friday’s nominated pairs’ gala winners with a handy +25 were Mick Baker and Dennis Simpson.

North Haven Women’s

THE finalists for the Club Triples were Wilma Stedman, Joyce Marendaz and Joyce Mitchell against Chris Kilby, Betty Chapman (subbing for Marianne Buckley) and Robyn Stanton. This was a great game with both teams locked on 15 all on 15 ends. Joyce Mitchell’s team just edged ahead in the next three ends to win the championship. The previous day, Joyce Mitchell had defeated Gay O’Çonnor in the semi-final, and Maryanne Buckley received a forfeit. Lucky winners were Leona McAlary, Lillian Eames and Betty Lane. Lucky runners-up were Gwen Rixon, Yvonne Smith and Ros Read.

Port City Mens’

THE 2016 major pairs was played Sunday, with a win to Callum Murray/Bryce Stewart over Ian Binder/Geoff Mitchell. However the mighty “Fighting Fives” were more successful, winning the zone 14 flag by defeating Sawtell at Kew 5450, 2 rinks to 1. They now travel to Harbord July 30 – 1 August to play in the state finals. Winners of the zone 14 flags are as follows: Grade 2 -

The real origin of Mate v Mate

If they do get knocked around a little it might teach them a lesson or two. “But one game isn’t going to make much of a difference. “My idea is we make it a three game State of Origin series. Soldiers will be the Well-bred Origin team and the convicts the Lower Class Origin team. It will stir up a lot of interest in the Settlement.” Fred: “But where on earth can we play the games?” Thomas: “It’s already covered. The SurveyorGeneral tells me there’s a great tract of open land out near Moore Park, where we can mark out the field, and have plenty of room for spectators. We can also make a bit of money by setting up some stalls, to sell rum and the local brew made by the free settlers.” The idea of selling alcohol for profit had an influence on Fred. He knew he could use that in an unfavourable report back to London. “OK Thomas. I’ll get the Adjutant to set it all up,” agreed Fred. And so it happened. It was a big surprise when the Lower Class Origin team won the first game. Members of the Well-bred Origin team were offered additional rations of rum if they could win the second game. They lifted their performance and levelled the series. Interest in the decider was at fever pitch. Additional supplies of rum were drawn from the bond store. The Government bought more hops and barley from the settlers to increase the beer production. And a young fellow called Oliver came up with the brilliant idea of selling

Westport Women’s

MONDAY and Tuesday, May 16-17, saw our No.2 Pennant team in Forster for the regional playoffs; they won both games, the first against Tuncurry and the second against South West Rocks, so they will now go to the State Finals to be played at Bombaderry in August.

barbecued kangaroo in damper sandwiches, with a relish made from locally-grown tomatoes. It combined well with the local ‘Smilax’ or ‘Sweet tea’ which was made from the sarsaparilla plant and available from other stalls. The concession sales provided a great fillip to the coffers of the Treasury. The game marked a turning point in Colonial history. The first half was hard-fought with scores level at half time. Then suddenly the Lower Class Origins started to play an entirely different game. They picked up the ball and ran with it, brushing aside the Well-bred Origin defenders. When they reached the goal line they dived over and cried ‘Try!’ The Well-bred Origin players caught on, and started to play the same way. But the Lower Class defenders were grittier and had a fierce determination in defending their goal line. They were clear winners on the day. There were some sick, sorry and bruised Well-bred Origin players next day. Not only did they sustain physical injuries but pride was badly dented throughout the team. And they all copped additional guard duty for their failure. Privately, Fred was delighted with the outcome. Although the venture was a huge success and a talking point in the Colony, Thomas had been humiliated because the game he loved from Eton had been bastardised by the convicts. When Fred was summoned to his office, he found Thomas raging about how his favourite game had been sullied. “Where in damnation did that idea of picking up the ball come from?” stormed Thomas.

Across the field, the 7th hole was won by Rod Millican with 0.73m. In the ball comp, balls went down to team scores of 101 pts giving 40 players a bonus ball each. Next week’s game is a Single Stableford event sponsored by the Wauchope Country Club.

ON Tuesday, May 17, the May Monthly Medal was played with a field of 133 starters. Best

Fred: “Well, my informants tell me it started last year with a chap back in England called William Webb Ellis. From all reports, he took the ball in his arms and ran with it, creating a new game. It caught on, and seems this news found its way to the Colony on one of the recent convict ships.” Fred had to show his outward concern and hide his true feelings of delight at seeing the Governor undermined. “I say Thomas, those Well-bred Origin players really let you and the Corps down.” Thomas: “Don’t talk about them. They’ve already been dealt with. It’s what I’ve got in store for the Lower Class Origins that really matters.” “So what are you going to do with them?” enquired Fred with some concern. “Do with them?” thundered Thomas. “I’ll tell you what I’m going to do with them. I’ve already lifted the spirits in the Colony, and now I’m going to use those players to start sorting out the problem of over-crowding with the convicts.” Fred: “You going to hang them?” Thomas: “No. I’ve had John Oxley up north looking for a location to start another penal colony and last year he found Moreton Bay. There’s a river there which he graciously named the Brisbane River. And Fred, that’s where they’re going. Just as soon as I can get them on a boat. They won’t forget me in a hurry.” So began the northern migration of 2400 convicts between 1824 and 1842. It started with players from that famous State of Origin series. And the legend of their success over the Wellbred Origin team continued to flow north through that period. After its dramatic beginning with those steely, determined convicts, it has flourished for more than one hundred and ninety years. Folklore has it that every rugby league player starting his career in Queensland has a blood test to see whether he has the convict State of Origin DNA. They are the chosen ones. Anyway, that’s my story about Origin dominance by Queensland. And I’m sticking to it.

We’re on perfect Origin high BEFORE we delve into Round 12 and the impact of State of Origin, let’s at least savour the spoils of Rd 11. Yes, if you followed Your Local Independent’s (YLI) tips you would have finished with the perfect round, eight from eight. We have gone close a couple of times, but finally the games went to our script. But it wasn’t easy. In fact on the NRL’s official tipping site, which includes about 71,000 tipsters each weekend – the average for the round was 4! Luck always plays a big hand and last weekend was no different. Of course we all knew that the Cows and Broncs would serve up another blockbuster. And they did with Thurston again the decider. However the biggest ‘win’ for YLI tipsters was taking the Titans over Penrith. This went down to the wire as well with just a try in the final minutes edging the Gold Coast ahead. So hopefully you are doing well with your tips as we enter the ‘Origin stage’. For several weeks now team lists change dramatically as players go up and down from State duties. What this period also highlights is not only the depth of clubs, but also the character of certain sides and what teams revolve around one key player. Who can forget the ‘Baby Broncos’ from way back in 2002, who fielded six rookies, including two 17-year-olds after their team had been decimated by Origin selection. Yet the young Brisbane side beat a seasoned Wests Tigers combination 28-14. The Broncos will again be hard hit by the Origin selection room with six players on duty for Game One. North Queensland are similarly placed with five players getting the call-up. So let’s go through this weekend’s games and see if we can get another perfect score. Round 12 tips:

Broncos v Tigers (Friday, May 27, 7.50pm, Suncorp Stadium, Brisbane): As already stated, the Broncs have six players out, and the Tigers 2 – Robbie Farah and Aaron Woods. The one big factor to remember here is Wayne Bennett. He has been in this situation so many times before and the Tigers, even at full strength have struggled to bruise a grape in ’16. We will lean towards the Broncos (and be thankful for the indiscretions of a few of their youngsters during an early season camp, who without those events would most likely have been on Origin call-up as well). • Your Local Independent tips: Broncos Dragons v Cowboys (Saturday, May 28, 7.30pm, WIN Stadium, Wollongong): OK, this is where Origin will hurt. Take Thurston and Morgan out of the Cows (not to mention a few other ‘handy’ players) and this side struggles. They do not boast the coaching history of a Bennett. The Dragons have two players on

ROUND 12 27th May – 1st June Friday 27th May, 7.50pm, Suncorp Stadium Broncos vs Wests Tigers Saturday 28th May, 7.30pm, WIN Stadium Dragons vs Cowboys Sunday 29th May, 4pm, GIO Stadium Raiders vs Bulldogs Monday 30th May, 7pm, Hunter Stadium Knights vs Eels Wednesday 1st June, 8,.15pm, ANZ Stadium NSW vs Queensland

Origin duty – Dugan and Frizell – but they are at home and have been in reasonable form this season. • Your Local Independent tips: Dragons Raiders v Bulldogs (Sunday, May 29, 4pm, GIO Stadium, Canberra): Raiders are without Josh Papalii while the Dogs will miss Jackson, Klemmer and Josh Morris. Both sides have been in solid form, however the Raiders have been building momentum and are less affected by Origin. Will still be close, but the Raiders at home should have enough. • Your Local Independent tips: Raiders Knights v Eels (Monday, May 30, 7pm, Hunter Stadium, Newcastle): Both teams are missing just the one player – Knights (Gagai) and Eels (Jennings). Putting their off-field troubles aside Parramatta have had a fair season, while the Knights have been woeful. Newcastle may be at home, but that will matter little here. • Your Local Independent tips: Eels.
