A Majestic future Kempsey numbers ‘add up’ says CEO
Majestic Cinemas CEO and part owner Kieren Dell says the proposed development in Kempsey will be a vital boost for the city heart
IT is all about the numbers. And former senior financial services manager Kieren Dell says the numbers surrounding the current model for a new cinema complex in Kempsey, add up. Dell has a vested interest. He is CEO and part owner of Majestic Cinemas, the entity most likely to run the proposed four-screen complex, which will be constructed as part of the Kempsey Central shopping centre. Significantly, last week, Kempsey Shire Council voted to enter into a Voluntary Planning Agreement (VPA) with centre owner Gowings, basically giving the green light for the project to go ahead. It is expected to open its doors before July next year. For Dell it is a no-brainer, with everyone, including Kempsey retailers and residents, to be the winners. But it all comes back to the numbers. One of the key numbers is 3.2. That’s what he has predicted as the average amount of times the people of Kempsey and the surrounding Macleay Valley will go to his cinema each year. The national average is actually 3.5, but he prefers to take a cautionary approach. Another number is 29,000. That’s the approximate population of the Macleay Valley. So multiply 3.2 and 29,000 and you get your

third significant number 93,000 (approx). That’s the number of bums on seats each year that will not only make the new Kempsey cinemas viable, but will also be the number that gives the Kempsey CBD a vital shot in the arm. OK, a few more numbers that matter. $6million – that’s the cost of the new cinemas. $2million from the Federal Government + $2million from the Kempsey Shire Council + $2million from Gowings. And, all these numbers are interlocked. The Federal Government’s $2million grant is specifically for infrastructure development that will help rejuvenate the town’s centre since it was bypassed by the highway. They believe a cinema complex will do this, but their grant is contingent on Kempsey council coming in $ for $. Dell says without this government infrastructure investment the development just doesn’t ‘add up’. “We (Majestic) have looked at Kempsey a number of times over the years and buildings that might be applicable for a cinema. But we could never make the numbers work on a purely commercial basis,” he says. However he says with the investment by the two levels of government, the development now has long-term viability. • Continued Page 3

Kempsey’s ‘Majestic future’ • From Page 1 “The 93,000 (people each year) would not cover the full cost of the build and infrastructure, but with $4m from federal and local governments - the remaining $2m in costs, with that forecast patronage, means it is viable. “It is a sound ongoing investment from government. It just would not be viable if you have to pay rent on a $6m building. It is viable on a $2m cost.” Keeping the numbers rolling, Dell says a fourscreen cinema is not a luxury, but ‘a must’ for the development, and cites another number. He says that in cities and towns throughout Australia the ideal average is one screen per 70008000 people. However Dell says that even more compelling is the major shift by us in what and when we want to watch. “Recent research done specifically for independent cinemas came up with five key findings,” he said. “People want: “1. Comfort - people want comfortable seats and big screens and great sound; “2. They want choice – they want a choice of a variety of movies and other content, and they want to watch them when they are released nationally; “3. Convenience – and that is anything from parking to session times. People don’t want their movie just at 10.30am on a Wednesday. They want it on three times a day, every day, so they can watch it either in the morning, afternoon or evening when it suits them; “4. Community – a cinema has to involve the community. We do a lot of fundraising events at Majestic and raise over $100,000 for charities on the mid north coast each year. We also run special events, all being part of the community; “5. Deals – people want deals, which we provide through things like our Movie Club, which we have 1000 members from the Kempsey region.” Majestic runs cinemas in Port Macquarie, Nambucca Heads, Singleton, The Entrance, Inverell, Sawtell and Nambour.
Dell says he and his company not only ‘know regional cinemas well’ they also know the Mid North Coast. He says people in regional areas were no longer happy to wait six to eight weeks to see movies after they have debuted in major cities. “The psyche has changed,” says Dell. “In this digital age, the age of Netflix and social media, people want immediate access to content. They don’t want to wait. “So if you have a limited number of screens (two) then you can muddle through, but our experience with that is that you constantly have people saying to you: ‘Well, why aren’t we seeing … this or that’. “Also there is not a major difference between the costs of a three-screen cinema and four screens.” Dell said the proposed cinema development would be one Kempsey people will not only enjoy, but will be extremely proud of. “This will not only be the best cinema facility on the Mid North Coast, but also the best from Byron Bay to Newcastle,” he says. “The proof will be in the pudding. It will not happen overnight. It takes a couple of years to get there … for people to change their habits. “But what we will see is a more vibrant CBD, a safer CBD with more people around. And it will help with things like the youth in the area. Their voice has not been heard a lot in this debate.” Dell said the new complex would house four auditoriums – 180-seat, 120-seat, 80-seat and 60-seat. The largest auditorium would also be built to host live shows and would include a stage and lighting. “I moved from Sydney to Scotts Head in 2000,” says Dell. “Majestic started 15 years ago when I bought the Nambucca cinema with some partners and a few backers. I am a businessman, but movies get into your blood. “This is about providing a community amenity. I want the Kempsey community to experience the same passion for movies that I do.”

Line up now for the flu shot By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC MANY residents in the Mid North Coast were struck down in 2017 by the deadly flu bug, and that’s why New South Wales Health is urging people to get ‘the jab’. Health authorities are encouraging people to get vaccinated before the end of May to avoid the flu epidemic. “In 2017, the North Coast Public Health Unit received notification of 1,614 cases of laboratoryconfirmed influenza infection in residents of the Mid North Coast,” said Paul Corben, Director, North Coast Public Health Unit. “While about one-third of the reported cases were 65 years and older, 21 per cent were under 20 years of age.” Mr Corben says that all people, no matter what age demographic, should protect themselves.
“While older people are more likely to be living with chronic health problems that make them more susceptible to complications from influenza, everybody is at risk of getting the flu - even young, fit and otherwise healthy people,” explains Mr Corben. “Seasonal influenza vaccination is available for anyone aged six months and over to protect against influenza, provided they do not have a medical reason that stops them from receiving influenza vaccines.” In eight of the last ten flu seasons, the Mid North Coast has had lower rates of influenza than the NSW average and in the other two years, the Mid North Coast had rates equal to the state average. “These lower reported rates could be attributed to the fact that there are fewer people living in regional areas than in the larger metropolitan
areas and so there is less transmission of flu virus,” explains Mr Corben. The basic preventative measures are crucial to protect yourself, your family, and the community. “Together with being vaccinated to reduce the chance of being infected with the flu virus, additional measures are extremely important in stopping the spread of flu,” Mr Corben said. “While there is the temptation for people to continue going to work and school whilst suffering the flu, we recommend they stay at home to give themselves the best opportunity to recover and avoid spreading the flu to others. “If unwell with flu symptoms, people should stay away from work, school, childcare and other public places until at least 24 hours after their fever has resolved.” The flu vaccines are available at most GPs, Aboriginal Medical Services and council and
community health clinics that routinely provide vaccination services. It is best to ring ahead to book an appointment for the free flu vaccine. Medical practitioners, immunisationauthorised registered nurses and immunisationauthorised pharmacists can administer influenza vaccines. Flu shots are available for free to members of the community who are pregnant, children up to five years of age and people over 65 years of age, most Aboriginal people and those with medical conditions such as asthma, diabetes and heart problems. To help prevent the spread of influenza remember to cough and sneeze into your elbow, clean your hands, and stay home when sick. Fluoridation concern I WRITE regarding the Council report entitled ‘Update on Water Fluoridation’ presented to Council’s meeting, Wednesday, April 18, 2018. The report addresses related regulatory risk. Council is informed that it is exposed to risk from two sources: • failure fully to comply with the July 30, 2004, direction to fluoridate given under section 6A of the Fluoridation of Public Water Supplies Act 1957 (NSW) (‘FPWS Act’) because only three of the LGA’s six water supplies are fluoridated; and • contraventions of section 35 of the Therapeutic Goods Act 1989 (CTH) (‘TG Act’), punishable by a penalty up to $840 000 per offence. Fluoridated drinking water is ‘therapeutic goods’ according to the TG Act. That is so because NSW Health and others claim that it is for the therapeutic use of preventing dental caries. Section 35 of the TG Act makes it an offence to manufacture of therapeutic goods if use of the goods is likely to result in harm or injury to a person.
Using fluoridated drinking water causes dental fluorosis and is likely to cause neurological damage. So far as it purports to permit or require water fluoridation, the FPWS Act is inconsistent with the regulatory scheme of the TG Act. Section 109 of the Commonwealth Constitution, which resolves conflicts between State and Commonwealth laws, automatically invalidates key provisions of the FPWS Act. It follows that Council must realign its water policy to comply with the TG Act by discontinuing water fluoridation. Oddly, the Council report contains advice exactly to the contrary. At Wednesday’s meeting, Infrastructure Director Alex Fisher failed to state reasons in support of the view taken in the report. Council very creditably referred the matter to its Water portfolio for further action. As Council must act lawfully, I am hopeful that it soon will rectify its policy position by discontinuing water fluoridation. Michael Lusk

Be patient, I’ll get back to you NEWSPAPER-LAND has been chaotic this week to say the least! It’s been a logistical nightmare at best, but, the fact you’re reading this, means we got through and made it to print! Hallelujah! I’m currently working on skeleton staffing levels, so, until I can find suitable people to fill the roles, can you please bear with me. Here’s a little housekeeping to help me through. I’m putting this out there, not because I want sympathy, but to let you know, in case you are trying to get through to the office. Basically, you may need to exercise a little bit of patience. Every week we get strange calls, wrong numbers and general time wasters. This week, seems to have taken the cake! As I am currently taking all the calls for both the Kempsey and Port Macquarie offices. I’ve been blown away by the amount of calls that are just ridiculous! If you want to know the phone number of a business, I am not your go to person. Surprise, surprise - there are phone books and directory services available for that. If you want to book an advert and have been sent to voicemail, because I’m on another call, can you please leave your full details – name, phone number, what you need and speak clearly, please! I don’t know how many phone messages

Girl power boosts SES ranks PORT Macquarie women are proving that the SES is not just a man’s world. The New South Wales State Emergency Service Port Macquarie next month will hold a women-only workshop called ‘Get Ready Girls’. And the workshop is already fully booked, proving that women on the Mid North Coast are keen to help in emergency situations. “We already have about 15 women as part of the SES Port Macquarie and there are obviously more women who are interested in learning these skills as the workshop has already completely booked out,” said Elaine Mason, NSW SES Port Macquarie-Hastings Unit Social Media Coordinator. “Up until recently it has been an all-guys network, and maybe a bit intimidating for women to join. But over the last couple of years that has changed.” The workshop will take place on May 21 and will prepare women for emergencies in a relaxed, supportive, female-only atmosphere. These women will build on the necessary skills that could help save someone’s life, prepare for storms, floods or other emergencies so they don’t have to rely on assistance from emergency services. “The SES has completely changed the whole way they do volunteering,” said Elaine. “You don’t have to be a volunteer every week, you can be a spontaneous volunteer and just turn up when there are big events, and you will get trained before you get to those events. “So if there is a big flood, you might be called in to do sandbagging or people with special skills will get called in to come and help.” The May 21 workshop will begin with a team of female facilitators from the NSW SES Port Macquarie-Hastings Unit who will take participants through a range of interactive instructional sessions on how to physically

prepare the house for a storm, learn basic first aid, flood awareness and what to do if you come across a road accident or other emergency. “We are always looking for volunteers, both male and female, because it is a big commitment for us and we spend a lot of time and money training, and after a few months people have family issues or things come up which stops them from coming,” Elaine said. “Having females as part of the SES gives it a good balance. They also add different skillsets and are generally great to have around. “Women also don’t have to do the heavy lifting, there are all sorts of roles that they can do.” The Port Macquarie ‘Get Ready Girls’ Workshop is a partnership between NSW SES and NRMA Insurance who have provided funding to help plan, promote and implement the event as part of their ongoing partnership with the volunteer emergency management organisation. Adventure film festival on tour By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC
LOCAL filmmakers are bringing the Mountainfilm adventure and documentary film festival to Port Macquarie. The film festival, which started in the US state of Colorado almost 40 years ago, is aimed purely at outdoor adventurers who bring the community together to celebrate their love of the outdoors. Toby Ryston-Pratt, co-founder of Adventure Film Tours, said Port Macquarie was the perfect destination to add to the tour this May. “I grew up on the Mid North Coast and have always wanted to give something back to the community there with this project,” said Toby. The short films include everything from environmental topics, culture and climbing, to
political and social justice issues that matter. The festival also brings together world-class athletes, change-makers and visionary artists. “The adventure film industry is a growing one with large numbers of screenings of different films occurring across Australia and around the world,” Toby said. “The films we show inspire people to get out and make a difference in the world. This is the first time any of the major adventure film tours have visited Port Macquarie to my knowledge.” Mountainfilm started in Telluride, Colorado in 1979 and occurs over the Memorial Day weekend in the US. After the festival, a selection of the best films are taken on tour around the world. This tour includes 18 venues in Australia and another five in New Zealand. “Mountainfilm on Tour touches the lives of
over 70,000 people every year and visits more than 150 locations,” said Toby. “We brought Mountainfilm on its first tour of Australia and New Zealand in 2017. “The event includes interactive talks, free community events, a gallery walk, outdoor programming and presentations, aiming to inspire audiences to action on worthy causes.” Keep an eye out for Australian filmmaker Krystle Wright’s short film ‘Where the Wild Things Play’. “This rowdy ode to female athletes by Krystle Wright leaves no doubt about the state of women in today’s outdoor world: badass,” said Toby. “Besides Krystle we do find that there are very few Australian adventure stories getting produced and this is something we are seeking to change.
“We also put on another film tour called the Women’s Adventure Film Tour, which is a concept we created. “We are currently sourcing films for that tour and will be showcasing plenty of Australian stories. “Any locals out there with films they would like considered should get in touch with us. Women’s Adventure Film Tour will screen in September as part of Women’s Health Week.” Mountainfilm on Tour will be held at the Majestic Cinemas, Port Macquarie on May 1, starting at 6.30pm. Check out more details at www. mountainfilmausnz.com or visit their Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/ mountainfilmausnz
FROM THE MAYOR A weekly conversation with Mayor Peta Pinson If you haven’t been to a Council meeting before, I thought you might be interested in a quick overview of how they work. Each month, Councillors come together for a formal meeting to make decisions on important matters that impact our community. These meetings are called the Ordinary meeting of Council, however they are anything but ordinary! You are more than welcome to attend these meetings so you can see firsthand the many, and often challenging issues that are put before us to discuss and make decisions on. Our April meeting was held last week, and among the many things we deliberated on were a tender for the dredging of Lake Cathie, Tastings on Hastings, the Port Macquarie Ocean Tidal Pool, the Flying Fox Colony in Kooloonbung Creek, our Long Term Energy Strategy, clearing of
vegetation on Flagstaff Hill… and the list goes on.
pmhc.nsw.gov.au
Sometimes there are tough decisions to be made, and Councillors have many discussions with the community and staff leading into each monthly meeting to ensure we are well informed so that we can make decisions, that deliver the best outcome for our entire community.
You can also make an address on any item that is on the agenda, and tell us whether you are supporting or opposing the recommendation that is put before us. Just remember, that if you do want to address Council you need to preregister. The details on how to do this are on our website or you can ring our Customer Service Centre.
We represent you, and work extremely hard on your behalf, meeting with our community to listen and discuss issues and concerns, and advocating for positive change. We also play an important role in setting the strategic direction for Council, and setting the policies that guide the operational decisions the Council staff make each and every day.
Whilst these opportunities are available to us all, I would however recommend that if you have an issue, idea or concern within your local community that you contact the Customer Service team first, as our staff are highly trained and may be able to offer a solution, provide advice or point you in the right direction.
The monthly meetings also provide you with the opportunity to address Council, in what we call the public forum. This is when you can let Councillors know about an issue that you feel is important, or that we may need to focus on.
I hope this provides you with a little insight into how Council meetings work and how you can get involved… I look forward to seeing you at a meeting in the future. Until next week, Peta.

Sleepout a taste of homeless life AUSTRALIANS will get a taste of what it’s like to be homeless as part of Mission Australia’s ‘Sleepout’ initiative. Now in its 30th year, the Sleepout draws participants away from their creature comforts to give them a glimpse of what it’s like for the 116,000 homeless people around the country. “According to 2016 ABS Census data, there are 745 people homeless in the Mid North Coast region,” said Emma Nelson, Communications Officer at Mission Australia. “The total figure of people who are homeless is predominantly comprised of people living in supported accommodation (crisis accommodation) and people staying temporarily with other households (couch surfing).” There are many reasons that lead to so many Australians becoming homeless. “Domestic violence is the single biggest cause of homelessness in Australia,” said Emma. “Homelessness can be the result of many social, economic and health-related factors. From our experience, people can become homeless after many years of experiencing poverty, poor relationships and drug, alcohol or mental health issues. “Sometimes it affects people who have been managing well in life, but are thrown off course by a stressful episode like a relationship breakup, job loss or death of a loved one. This can set off a chain of events that leads to a person being without a place to live.” Homelessness in Australia has grown by 4.6 per cent since 2011 and the Sleepout event aims to raise awareness about this pressing issue. “We know that most of us can’t truly understand what it’s like to be homeless, but
can “beHomelessness the result of many
social, economic and health-related factors
“
By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC
the Sleepout experience is an opportunity for everyday Australians to comprehend the plight of people who are experiencing homelessness, which can equip them for further action and advocacy,” said Mission Australia CEO James Toomey. “We’d love as many individuals and groups to partner with us in our goal to end homelessness by participating in a Sleepout this year.” There are also everyday ways that the average person can contribute to ending homelessness. “If you feel inspired to assist a homeless person directly, the first thing to do is ask: ‘Can I help? How can I help? Are you okay?’ but be prepared that your offer may be declined,” said Emma. “If you feel that making a contribution to a homeless person is appropriate, you might decide to give money, food or drink or some other practical support such as clothing or bedding. “Or you could buy a copy of The Big Issue from a registered homeless person vendor who keeps 50 per cent of each sale. You might also consider donating to a homelessness charity of your choice.” People can host a Sleepout event at any time of the year. For more information and to register for Mission Australia’s 30 Years of Sleepout visit https://act.missionaustralia.com.au/event/ sleepout2018
Holistic approach to animal health By SUE PATERICK A WORKSHOP to help people learn how to maximise their animal’s health, prevent injury and maintain well-being and performance will be held in Port Macquarie in late May. According to National President of the Australian Foundation for Healing Touch, Betty Green, Healing Touch is a worldwide health system based on energy and using a person or animal’s energy to heal themselves. “We all have the same basic structure with a spine and a muscular system, so dogs, cats, horses, exotic animals and even birds have similar energy fields to humans,” she said. “If we balance the body’s energy fields with Healing Touch the body will heal itself and the same goes for animals. “It is a very effective treatment because it maximises the body’s well-being and this increases performance in whatever they are doing.” Presenter for the animal workshop is Annis Parker, a New Zealander who runs a full-time practice in Bio-Energetic Healing of which Healing Touch is a part. She has been in practice since 1997 and her work incorporates both humans and animals. Her original objective of developing and consolidating Healing Touch as a New Zealand organisation has been achieved, and the ongoing work has been delegated to younger experienced people to continue with the development. Annis is now studying the details of animals and is very interested in where imbalances are stored in the body. She is a Registered Nurse with educational, management and advanced nursing practice qualifications and has worked in numerous countries around the world in areas ranging from operating theatres, disaster work both in the field and in the planning phases, to oncology/bone marrow transplant. “This is the first time this workshop has been held on the Mid North Coast, and it offers
Betty Green, National President of the Australian Foundation for Healing Touch, and her dog Maggie a different approach to animal wellbeing,” said Betty. The workshops will be held at Cassegrain Wines at 10 Winery Road Port Macquarie with dogs on Saturday May 26 and horses on Sunday May 27. It will begin at 8am and finish at 4pm on both days. New skills on offer at college HAIRDRESSING has just been added to the Trendz Beauty School at the college, so you can now enrol in the Certificate III course to become a qualified hairdresser and join our working salon environment. Some of the leading hairdressers in town are part of our extended family of creative experts and they will introduce students to real world techniques and practical business lessons. Alongside that program is the Jumpstart Retail Cosmetics transition scheme. This provides young people with the chance to explore working in the beauty industry, while picking up their literacy and numeracy skills and becoming more confident about joining any workplace. It leads on to the Stepping Up to Beauty program that provides training in everything you need to know to get a job in a department store and chemist shop beauty sections. If you’re more technically prone our new Information Technology for Volunteering course will help to hone your skills to be able to help others. The Certificate I in Information, Digital Media and Technology refines students’ skills with emailing, social media, digital photography and producing powerpoint presentations. These abilities are much in demand in workplaces where some people are still seeking help to get properly up to speed with new technology. If these opportunities appeal to you, or you know someone who might benefit from these sorts of courses, please call in at 77 Hastings River Drive, or give us a call on 6583 7288. And you can check out the website at www.portace.com.au.

Vital mental health support MENTAL Health Support for New Mums and Dads: It can be difficult to access mental health support services when living in regional areas and the NSW Government is committed to changing that with the introduction of the Start Talking program. Regional families don’t always have the same access to mental health services as those in the cities, and that is why the Start Talking program is so important - to assist parents living in regional areas who may be in need of psychological support. Parents will now have access to specialist perinatal and infant mental health services, via video call. Perinatal Depression and Anxiety (PNDA) is a condition commonly experienced by women during pregnancy and the year following the birth of a baby. New fathers are also vulnerable to PNDA. I am so proud that mental health services are being improved in this region and the NSW Government is backing this fantastic initiative. For more information please visit www. gidgetfoundation.org.au or telephone 1300 851 758. $120 Million for More Open Spaces and Playgrounds: The NSW Government has announced plans to increase open spaces and
MOST people have tasted coffee or tea at some point in their lives. Probably the exceptions would be babies and those whose particular beliefs would prevent it. My preference is for coffee, but I have no beliefs that would prevent having tea. I have tea quite often. We have a coffee tree in our backyard, but I prefer to buy my coffee at the store. The early history of coffee is obscure. But from what I can gather the coffee plant was “discovered” in Ethiopia in the 11th century. The leaves were boiled in water and the resulting concoction was thought to have medicinal properties. It was carried to Batavia and was successfully cultivated. It has since been cultivated throughout the world, or at least where conditions allow. A popular Ethiopian legend is that coffee was discovered by a goat herder named Kaldi, who found his goats full of energy after eating the fruit of the coffee shrub. Kaldi tried the fruit and had a similar reaction. It must have been good coffee. By the 16th century, it had reached the rest of the Middle East, South Persia, South East Asia and then to America. English appears to have got the name from the Turkish kahvrh about1600, according to my

inclusive playgrounds following a $120 million funding injection from the Government to make communities across the state more liveable and green. The Government is committed to not only creating the jobs and infrastructure our communities need, but also the vital open and green spaces so that families can have the best quality of life. The $100 million commitment will allow the Government to identify and purchase land for public open space. An extra $20 million will go towards building new inclusive playgrounds in communities that currently do not have them, while also funding upgrades to playgrounds to ensure they have the most engaging and inclusive equipment. Through strategic planning and the purchasing of land we will be able to deliver quality parks and playgrounds for kids to play.

big dictionary. But it also comes from Arabic qahwah. According to my Macquarie dictionary many words associate with coffee. How about coffee bar, coffee break, coffee bush, coffee cake, coffee crystals, coffee cup, coffee grinder, coffee winch, coffee house, coffee money, coffee palace, coffee pot, coffee royal, coffee scroll, coffee shop, coffee table and coffee tree? My Websters includes “coffee klatch” which it describes as a “small social gathering, especially of women, for informal conversation while drinking coffee”. My wife can’t understand why, when I finish my cup of coffee, I want to leave the restaurant. Now I can tell my wife’ “klatch” and see if I get a response. Coffee entered the English language in the years leading to 1598. In 1598, according to my big dictionary, “the Turkes holde almost the same manner of drinking
of their Chaoua, which they make of a certain fruit….” Chaoua was one of a number of spellings of coffee. This was the first occasion I could find coffee in the English language. It was described as “a mild stimulant”. A joke going the rounds was “this coffee tastes like mud”. The reply is “so it should. It was ground only yesterday”. They even made a dictionary devoted to coffee. Coffee and its other words according to the big dictionary number so many they would fill this space, so I won’t even try. Then we come to café. This was a French term that entered the English language before 1789. It came into the English language via the Italian. It was introduced for a class of restaurant. One name was café-haunting. The Webster tells us caffeine mixed “in large doses is poisonous”. According to Websters cafe describes a “barroom or night club”. Readers Digest says Greasy Spoon is slang and describes a restaurant whose food is cheap and no bargain “and which is often as unsavoury as the name suggests”. I have never found a Greasy Spoon. lauriebarber.com;lbarber.com.au

IN an exciting time for our community the Port-Macquarie-Hastings region will see a new addition to the local event calendar, in this our bicentenary year. At its April meeting, Port MacquarieHastings Council decided to focus efforts on delivering a new event which will bring our community together to celebrate the bicentenary of John Oxley’s expedition, and recognise our rich history. It was also decided to place a pause on the popular Tastings on Hastings event which is typically held in October. “This is a great opportunity to celebrate and recognise our bicentenary milestone as a community, and in a way that we know our community love to come together – with live music and local offerings in the heart of Port Macquarie, on our Town Green and Town Square,” said Council Acting Director Liesa Davies. “We’ll also be looking to partner with locals to create satellite events which offer a range of cultural and heritage experiences for our community to enjoy”, Ms Davies said. In making the decision to focus on the bicentenary event in 2018, Council acknowledged Tastings on Hastings has been an important fixture on the local events calendar, and time needs to be invested in reviewing its approach and understanding what our community wants it to look like in the future.

City braces for Ironman 3000 athletes take on scenic Port course

Inset: There is always plenty of action in the events across the weekend of May 4-6. run past my 93-year-old Grandfather’s house at Settlement Point during the run. “
PORTMacquarie is bracing for the annual ironman influx. This year about 3000 athletes, including some of the world’s top Ironman performers, will contest the major two events on May 6. However it is the thousands of families and fans who are also attracted that have turned the 2018 Ironman 70.3 Port Macquarie into such a lucrative event for the city. “Established in 1985, the iconic Ironman Australia is one of the longest running Ironman events in the world,” said Noel McMahon Media Manager for Ironman, Oceania. “It has a very fond place in the hearts of the thousands of competitors who return year after year and become an integral part of life on the New South Wales Mid North Coast.” The events across the weekend include the Ironman 70.3 – a 1.9km swim, 90km bike ride, and a 21.1km run, the Ironman Australia event – a 3.8km swim, 180km bike ride, and a 42.2km run, the Bright Night Run – a short community fun run of approximately 4km in length, and the Ironkids – a 500m, 1500m, or 3km run (depending on the age of the competitors). “This is the second year of the Bright Night Run and we are expecting it to continue to grow over coming years and become a highlight of the weekend for local residents and visitors to Ironman Australia and Port Macquarie,” Noel explained. The event not only highlights Australia’s talent pool, but also showcases the local scenery, bars, café’s, and businesses. “There will be more than 3,000 athletes in total for all events,” said Noel. “In excess of 1300 athletes in the Ironman and in excess of 1400 in Ironman 70.3.” Locals will certainly be keeping an eye out for athlete Luke McKenzie who grew up in Taree. Luke has a second place at the World Ironman Championships to his credit and intends on adding the Ironman Australia title to his nine Ironman wins. “I am excited to return to the Mid North Coast as it is a place I spent a lot of my youth and Ironman Australia is where it all started for me as an eight-year-old boy,” said Luke. “My family and I would go out to ForsterTuncurry each year and volunteer at the aid stations and I absolutely idolized the Ironman athletes. “I love a challenging course and Port Macquarie suits my strengths and having lots of family and friends coming to support me makes for a very special atmosphere. “The highlight for me is I get to literally
Tricky winds for Race 11 AFTER a morning with quite a few juniors and new sailors practicing in the nice little westerly, the Port Macquarie Sailing Club sailed race 11 of the Summer series, starting as the westerly strengthened. After blowing quite well for most of the race, the southerly died off with the threatening storms, making it a struggle for the last boats to finish as the tide started to run out. Frank O’Rourke on Dino won the catamaran division on both yardstick and handicap as is so often the case, followed by Rob Barwick on Drift. Tony Kuhn on Stella withdrew after falling ill, which was not helped by the strengthening breeze. The monohull division was won on yardstick by Stuart Symons and Sharon Carney in Red Star, despite having their Gooseneck break off the mast just before finishing. Rohan Nosworthy in Impulsive was 34
seconds behind in 2nd, then came Simon and Elsa Gandy and Caitlyn Hicks in Voyager, and Steve Couch and Jeff Walsh in Britannia. Charly Nosworthy in Karaoke Kid did 2 shorter practice laps, Peter Nyberg and Sean Watson in Jupiter withdrew as the breeze increased in fear of breaking a 3rd mast in 3 weeks, Terry Howard in Ratz withdrew with a broken outhaul, and Steve Bohlsen and Ed Molony in Splash Dance withdrew after breaking their mast rotator. Red Star also beat Impulsive on handicap, with Britannia only 11 seconds behind in 3rd, then finally, Voyager. Next Sunday is the final round of sprint races starting at 1pm and is the final race day of the season. Help is required for the duty. There will be an end of season BBQ after the race at about 5pm, and it will be the last chance to put your name on the list at the clubhouse and pay for the presentation night on May 19.

The NRL started early for Round 8 with two games – Dragons v Roosters and Storm v Warriors - on Anzac Day before YLI was printed. The competition is starting to settle with new ‘power teams’ emerging. The Warriors, Saints, Tigers are three teams who are proving that their early season form was not a mirage. While the Storm also reminded us last weekend that they are far from a spent force. Hopefully it’s a good weekend: Dragons v Roosters (Wednesday, April 25, 4.10pm, Allianz Stadium, Sydney): Your Local Independent tips: Dragons Storm v Warriors (Wednesday, April 25, 7pm, AAMI Park, Melbourne): Your Local Independent tips: Warriors Rabbitohs v Broncos (Thursday, April 26, 7.50pm, ANZ Stadium, Sydney): There will be plenty of energy in this clash with the Rabbitohs keen to build on some winning form and the Broncos desperate to get some form of winning run going. Both teams have key players out – Souths will be missing Sam Burgess and the Broncos have Andrew McCullough on the sideline. Rabbits from has been more consistent. Your Local Independent tips: Rabbitohs Sea Eagles v Knights (Friday, April 27, 6pm, Lottoland, Sydney): The bookies must know something because they have the woeful Manly as early favourites to take this one out. The Sea Eagles seem to be lurching
April 29, 4.10pm, ANZ Stadium, Sydney): The Eels are off and running! Their win against Manly last weekend would have been a big pressure release. However this weekend they come up against a smarting Tigers’ outfit who would be filthy at losing to the Knights last weekend. The Eels will be without the injured Jarryd Hayne. ROUND 8 The Rabbits’ Sam Burgess will be missing this weekend from one off-field drama to another and just can’t get their minds on the main game. The Knights have their playmaker (Mitchell Pearce) out injured but will definitely be on a high after bringing the in-form Tigers down last weekend. Your Local Independent tips: Knights Panthers v Bulldogs (Friday, April 27, 7.55pm, Panthers Stadium, Penrith): This will be a close one. The Panthers were edged out by the Sharks last weekend, while the Dogs also lost in a very high quality game against the Roosters. The Dogs ladder position (14th) is not a fair indication of who they are. They have certainly been in better form in recent weeks. However the bookies have Penrith as strong early favourites. Let’s go with the money. Your Local Independent tips: Panthers Titans v Sharks (Saturday, April 28, 5.30pm, Cbus Super Stadium, Gold Coast): The Gold Coast are
back at Cbus after the Commonwealth Games and will need a lift after some very inconsistent early season form. They were disappointing against the Cowboys last weekend. Meanwhile the Sharks outlasted the Panthers in their outing at the weekend. The Titans have the ability to get their opposition engaged in a dogfight. Upset looming. Your Local Independent tips: Titans Cowboys v Raiders (Saturday, April 28, 7.35pm, 1300SMILES Stadium, Townsville): The Cowboys are climbing off the canvas. Their win over the Titans last weekend was far from their best football, but they are improving. They are running short on big men with John Asiata out injured. The Raiders just can’t seem to find any sort of reliable form this year. They were bashed by the Rabbits last weekend and won’t enjoy this away trip.
