I had no idea about the tragedies that had happened in this area. It was a big eye “opener for me. I think a lot of Australians aren’t aware enough of our indigenous history.

Dark past inspired author’s debut novel

WHEN Donna Cameron became aware of the tragedies that took place at Red Rock, near Coffs Harbour, she felt inspired to write her very first novel. The now 49-year-old author from the NSW Central Coast, is bringing her debut novel ‘Beneath the Mother Tree’, and her thoughts, to the Port Macquarie library. “I had no idea about the tragedies that had happened in this area,” said Donna. “It was a big eye opener for me. I think a lot of Australians aren’t aware enough of our indigenous history.” Donna was in her mid-twenties when she visited Red Rock for the first time, and she is ashamed to admit it was also the first time she became aware of the awful violence that had been inflicted on the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people during colonisation of this country. “I had walked out of the campground to the end of a dirt road and discovered a sheltered beach,” explains Donna. “To the right of this beach was a headland made from a distinctly red rock. There was a track, which I followed and climbed to the top. “Overwhelmed by the enormity of the view, I looked into the crashing waves below, the white foam swirling over and between the red of the rock inexplicably filled me with an incredible sense of melancholy. “I followed the path down the other side of the headland and came across a plaque – ‘In memory of the victims and survivors of the blood rock massacres’. “I was so shocked by the fact that I had sensed the tragedy in the landscape before knowing about it that, over the years, I found myself haunted by this memory.” Years later Donna began writing her debut

novel Beneath the Mother Tree, which is set in the Quandamooka area where she grew up. “This memory became a powerful inspiration for what I had to write,” Donna said. “I had worked as an actress, I did script writing, I

worked in radio and short films, but this story inspired me to write my very first novel.” The Quandamooka Nation consists of the waters and islands of central and southern Moreton Bay and the coastal land and streams between the Brisbane and Logan Rivers. The original inhabitants were made up of three clans - the Nunukul and Gorenpul of Minjerribah (Stradbroke Island) and the Ngugi of Moorgumpin (Moreton Island). Due to the physical isolation of the place and the remnants of the mission on Minjerribah, which ran for over fifty years, there is still a strong Aboriginal presence in the area. “This story was something I wanted to do as a novel,” Donna explains. “I hope that anyone who reads it will get a greater understanding of what it means to be Australian, to became aware of colonisation, and the connection to the land and nature.” Donna worked with respected Ngugi elder Uncle Bob Anderson on all Indigenous content through her novel. Uncle Bob was the first to make her aware of the violence and massacres that had occurred on the Quandamooka area. “Here I was, now in my forties, hearing these stories for the first time,” said Donna. “Suddenly I saw this place, my heart country, through the eyes of the local mob. “There was heartbreak

and violence scattered throughout the land, occurrences similar to what had taken place at Red Rock. Unlike at Red Rock, however, these stories aren’t officially documented, there is no plaque on any of the massacre sites.” As ‘Beneath the Mother Tree’ came together, Donna found that the red ochre of Quandamooka merged with the red rock of the Gumbaingirr people’s massacre site, and she realised, all over Australia there were death spots yet to be uncovered. “There are still many plaques to be unveiled,” said Donna. “I want to keep writing novels now and to share these stories. “I got so much pleasure out of writing this novel and how the story unfolded with the characters and the landscape. I’m totally addicted now.” Donna’s book ‘Beneath the Mother Tree’ is a spine-chilling mystery and contemporary love story, which is played out in a unique and wild setting, interweaving Indigenous history and Irish mythology. Donna will be giving an author talk at the Port Macquarie Library on Thursday, August 9, at 2pm, and Kempsey Library on Friday, August, 10 at 11am. Charity Auction success

LAKE Cathie Amateur Fishing Club would like to announce we raised a record amount of $10,800 during the 2018 Fish Charity Auction which was held at Lake Cathie Bowling and Recreation Club on June 17. Funds raised were donated to the Lake Cathie Rural Fire Brigade and Camden Haven Marine Rescue allowing them to receive a whopping check for $5400 each. This is a annual event that involves the whole community without the sponsors that donate prizes and funds to award the prizes on the day it would not have been the success it was. We would like to thank all the local fishermen and women of our amazing MNC Fishing clubs that spend all weekend catching the local fresh seafood. Without you guys there would be no fish to auction. TO say it’s been a hectic couple of weeks is a complete understatement. It has been crazy! Holly, my daughter and co-ordinator extraordinaire, took a well-earned break and went to Bamaga (tip of Cape York) to visit her fiancé who is currently working the busy fishing charter season up there. Taking just over a week off is nothing out of the ordinary and wouldn’t be considered much of a big deal in the scheme of things, but I have to admit I was quietly freaking out about whether I would keep it together on my own and if we would make it to print or not. The good news is – we met deadline and there were no major problems. You got a newspaper last week, an absolute testimony to Holly and her fantastic organisational skills. Thank you Holly and thanks to our production team who work tirelessly behind the scenes of Your Local Independent. I rediscovered a couple of issues while Holly was away and at the risk of repeating myself (banging my head against a brick wall) I need to address them again. Sorry if I bore you - here we go: A couple of years back, we offered free line adverts for items under $30 for people to measure the response – you know – make sure things got sold – like a trial period. We have put a minimal price on the classifieds to cover our costs – so, yes, if you want to place a classified advertisement in Your Local Independent there is a cost ($15 + GST per 3 lines, per week or $15 +GST per column cm for display classifieds). I would have been happy to continue with the free adverts for items under $30 however, to be quite frank, I’m totally over people

Thumbs Up TO Greg and Ed, two council contractors working at Shelly Beach who came to help my husband after he tripped on the walking track. At my request, as we were out of their sight, both men hurried to my husband who was lying on the ground. After assessing the situation and asking my husband numerous questions in relation to his fall, they were able to carefully assist him to his feet and help us back to our car. Their compassion, reassurance and assistance was greatly appreciated. Thumbs Up Thumbs Down is your chance to have your say. Malicious or defamatory submissions will not be accepted. I RECENTLY went to Godfreys in Horton Street. I have a mobility problem and the lady was just opening the doors and helped me into the shop. She was most considerate and was helpful afterwards and drove my car from the centre of the road over to the kerb where she helped me into the driver’s seat. She then directed me to back out safely. I would like to say your help was greatly appreciated.

Thumbs Up TO the Westport Club member who handed my purse in with everything intact! Thanks also to Joan from Westport Club reception who called to let me know it was safe. There are some good people out there, thank you!

expecting to use my business for their profit. I’m not a charity and it is really frustrating to have to even have this conversation AGAIN! Here’s an example of what am I on about. Someone wanted to book an advert for a $15 plant for sale and when questioned about how many plants they were ‘actually’ selling, got angry because they have 100s of plants for sale at $15 each and cannot see why they should pay $15 +GST per week for me to run their advert so they can make money. Lots of money! I’ve also previously asked for people to leave clear and precise messages on the answering service with full contact details and someone will respond ASAP. For those that are unaware, ASAP means ‘as soon as possible’ so please don’t just sit there calling the number over and over expecting someone to respond. If you don’t get an answer there are a couple of reasons, either the office is unattended or we are on another call or meeting with clients. Just leave your name and number clearly and we will pick up the message and respond. Persistently calling, heavy breathing and swearing into the phone is not going to get a response. All it does is clog up our phone system and quite literally gives me the absolute shits!

TO the young woman recently who apparently mislaid her office and used a local cafe instead. She was on the phone for 15 minutes speaking very loudly. After she left it was obvious that both staff and patrons had found it disturbing. This is a small quiet cafe where people often sit and read. I’m not saying it’s not OK to work from a café, but please have some consideration for other people and do it quietly.

Thumbs Down IF Port Macquarie-Hastings Council can afford to sponsor TV’s Masterchef, surely, they can afford respectable amenities (ie: toilet tissue provision) in the ladies room at the airport. Grappling with dispensers that tug paper the other way is not acceptable on the hop, let alone as an indicator to visitors of our town’s level of public respect.

Thumbs Up TO June of Target in Port Central who helped me with a heavy purchase. A big thank you.

Family support celebrates 25th We provide “ safety options

By SUE PATERICK

for women and children and a safe and supportive environment for all who seek support

TWENTY-FIVE years ago Kempsey Families Specialist Support Services was formed to meet the needs of vulnerable families in the local community. To mark this momentous milestone Kempsey Families recently held a celebratory barbeque. This vital service, formerly known as Kempsey Family Support Service, was incorporated in July in 1993 with a staff of three. Over the past 25 years the service has grown to now employ 16 staff and retain two volunteers. It also provides a learning space for students from TAFE and university. The vision of Kempsey Families has always been to provide a safe, equitable and inclusive society where children, families and communities can live safe and healthy lives that build resilience and connection. Funded through Family and Community Services, Kempsey Families provides a range of programs and projects to support vulnerable families and caregivers. “We specialise in domestic and family violence support for women and children through our Staying Home Leaving Violence program and Speak Out 4 Kids,” said Executive Officer June Wilson JP. “Each Wednesday we also provide our Red Shed, which is a supported playgroup for children under five and their parents and caregivers.” Kempsey Families also provides parenting groups, case work and advocacy, support and mentorship for young people, and has a designated young-parent case worker. Not long ago the service became the lead agency across the Mid North Coast for its

Kempsey Families - Specialist Support Services Executive Officer, June Wilson JP Men’s Behaviour Change work. This program invites men who have used violence in an intimate current or past relationship to change their behaviour through an intensive 12-week group setting. While this list is impressive, June believes the service’s greatest achievements are helping its clients to reach their full potential in whatever form that takes.

“We provide safety options for women and children and a safe and supportive environment for all who seek support,” June said. In the future Kempsey Families will strive to provide new and innovative ways to meet the community’s needs. “We are committed to maintaining our current services and will seek ways to improve children’s lives in the child restoration field,” said June.

To do this the service hopes to work with families who have children currently placed in out-of-home care so they can be returned to their families and have ongoing support in place. Kempsey Families is also awaiting the outcome of a funding application from Women NSW to offer case management in a housing model that will support men excluded from the family home due to their violence. According to June, this model would reach across the Mid North Coast with partner organisations Warrina DFV Specialist Cooperative and Port Macquarie DFV Specialist Service in partnership with Community Housing. In the meantime, this unique organisation’s 25th anniversary will celebrate its inception and its continued role to meet and respond to the community’s needs in an integrated, inclusive and client-centred approach. “ The giveaway will be a great opportunity for residents to come along and grab a plant, get “

outside and green their own gardens while doing something good for the environment

Two free plants to help locals connect By SUE PATERICK THE theme for this year’s National Tree Day on Sunday July 29 is Connect in Nature, and to contribute Kempsey Shire Council will be giving away two free native plants per person to local residents. School Tree Day will be conducted in school yards across the nation and Macleay Valley on Friday July 27. Council’s great tree giveaway will take place in its leafy courtyard on Friday, July 27, from 10.30am to 1.30pm and proof of residency in the Kempsey Shire will be required. Due to the limited number of plants available, Council advises it is best to get there early. Acting Coordinator Civic Services, Katy Rogan, said Council was proud to be supporting National Tree Day again this year. “The giveaway will be a great opportunity for residents to come along and grab a plant, get outside and green their own gardens while doing something good for the environment,” she added. On the day residents will also have the chance to enter a draw to win a fruit tree. Planet Ark began National Tree Day and School Tree Day 22 years ago as an opportunity for individuals to connect with nature while doing something positive for their community and the environment. Since its inception in 1996 over 3.8 million people have planted 24 million trees and plants and the event is still growing. It has become Australia’s largest community tree-planting and nature-care event. According to Planet Ark’s website, National Tree Day aims to inspire, educate and recruit Australians to actively care for our unique

land and create future generations of committed environmental custodians. Its research has shown that interacting with nature has distinct benefits for health, wellbeing and a child’s development. This year’s theme - Connect in Nature - looks

at how technology can enhance time outdoors and enrich a person’s appreciation of the natural world using apps and other digital resources. Planet Ark has discovered that Australians spend just three per cent of their week in nature but almost three hours a day on their phones,

primarily on social media. “In an age where people are spending more time indoors immersed in technology, we wanted to know if it is possible to bring nature and technology together,” Planet Ark’s website said. “One third of Australians believe technology can have a positive effect on people’s time spent in nature and one in four Australians already use apps that encourage time spent in nature.” This year’s theme, says Planet Ark, is not only about connecting with trees, it is also about building a relationship with other plants and animals and connecting with each other in person and through technology. If you can’t make it on the official dates Planet Ark reckons every day is a good day to plant a tree. FROM THE MAYOR A weekly conversation with Mayor Peta Pinson Have you ever wondered where your drinking water comes from, where our household rubbish goes or what happens behind the scenes at the Glasshouse? These questions, and many more are ones I’ve certainly been asking since becoming Mayor, and it’s been an enlightening (if somewhat rapid) learning curve for me. Whilst I’m certainly no expert, I’ve learnt so much, and it continues to amaze me the broad range of services that Council delivers on behalf of our community every single day. There’s an old saying ‘roads, rates and rubbish’, which is often used to describe Council, but can I tell you, nothing could be further from the truth. Yes we provide these services, but your Council is so much more. From supporting local community groups and causes, building footpaths and boat ramps, providing playgrounds, parks and gardens, through to running

libraries, crematoriums and an airport there are so many important pieces that contribute to the full picture. Whilst my new-found knowledge helps me serve you better, being out and about in our community, listening to your issues and discussing how we can make this wonderful region an ever better place to live is what keeps me wanting to learn more, grow, and represent you in the community. Whilst it may not seem very exciting for many of us, next week is Local Government Week and we’ve arranged six FREE tours for those interested to learn more about how Council works from the inside out. During the tours you can see what happens at our sewerage treatment plants, track your rubbish at a waste transfer station and even visit a live roundabout construction project. For those with a creative side you can take a tour of the Glasshouse, going back stage and exploring the dressing rooms to see what really happens when the curtain comes up

pmhc.nsw.gov.au and goes down. And for water lovers, you can take the journey from ‘river to tap’ as you track our water supply from its source at Koori Island right through to our dams where the water is stored. These FREE tours are taking place next week, so I encourage you to jump on board and book a seat through the Glasshouse Box Office or on Council’s website. If you’re keen to learn more about Council, our website also has lots of great information, and if you want to stay up to date on day-to-day happenings I encourage you to like our Facebook page. I look forward to keeping you up-to-date with the many Council services that support our growing region, and hope to see you out and about in our community soon. Until next week, Peta

Female action figures on film “ The aim for these

films is to promote diversity and inclusion in the outdoor industry

AN inspiring new female adventure package of films is coming to Port Macquarie. This year Mountainfilm on Tour has introduced the Women’s Adventure Film Tour to celebrate women doing incredible things. “Adventure and adventure films, like many areas, have been traditionally male dominated with major festivals in some years including almost no female content,” said Toby RystonPratt, founder of Adventure Film Tour. “I have a 9-year-old daughter and I want to help make a better future for her.” Mountainfilm travels year-round and worldwide with a selection of current and bestloved short films from the annual Mountainfilm festival in Telluride, Colorado. The films include a large number of Australian and New Zealand stories as well as international films. The tour will be hitting Port Macquarie on Tuesday September 4 at the Majestic Cinemas. “This is also an original concept I created last year in collaboration with women’s adventure group, She Went Wild,” explains Toby. “It has quickly spread to be doing 30 screenings this year in Australia, plus shows in New Zealand, United Kingdom, Hong Kong, Singapore and the United States of America. “It’s a night of short films that celebrate the inspiring women around us doing fantastic things. The content we have selected this year has awesome skiing, snowboarding, bike expeditions, mountaineering, climbing,

swimming and more.” The events are an official part of ‘Jean Hailes for Women’s Health Week’ and backed by the Department of Health’s ‘Girls Make Your Move’ initiative. “We frequently get stories from people who have been inspired by the films to get out and adventure,” Toby said. “One of my favourite

ECLIPSE a support group for suicide attempt survivors

stories is from someone who attended a show in Brisbane and won a prize to learn to paraglide and has since gone on to be a fully-fledged pilot. “We also had a mother from Newcastle who attended our original screening in Sydney and was so inspired she now runs the event for us in her hometown. Kelly, who runs the films for us in Port Macquarie, is in a similar category who

attended the events in Sydney. “The aim for these films is to promote diversity and inclusion in the outdoor industry by creating awareness about the inspirational women around us doing awesome things and giving them an outlet.” The venue seats 290 people and Toby expects it will be a sell out. “We completely sold out the last Mountain Film event we held in Port Macquarie so we will be hoping for a similar number for this event,” he said. “This tour celebrates the inspiring women around us - it is deliberately intended to be for women, men and children to enjoy, to bring their families along and celebrate their own inspirational women. It is about inclusivity, not excluding males.” Tickets for the Women’s Adventure Film Tour are $25 for adults, $15 for youth, and $20 for concession. Tickets can be purchased from https://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/womensadventure-film-tour-1819-port-macquarietickets-46210424624 Some Australian women featured in the film include Michaela Davis-Meehan, snowboarder from Newcastle, Monique Forestier, Australia’s best female rock climber from the Blue Mountains, Anna Segal, Melbourne Australian Olympic skier, Janine Jungful, Brisbane world champion trials rider, Dr Kate Leeming, West Australian expedition cyclist, and Alyssa Azar, youngest Australian to summit Mt Everest, from Toowoomba. There will also be two other adventure film events coming to Port - RunNation Film Festival on August 28 and International Ocean Film Tour on November 7.

Will I have enough money to live comfortably in retirement? “ The cornerstone of a good retirement plan

starts with creating realistic and measurable goals and objectives

A RECENT survey conducted with Morgans Port Macquarie clients revealed that living comfortably in retirement was one of the most popular definitions of having achieved financial success. A retirement plan can significantly affect how people will live out their retirement years in terms of quality of life, where and how they live as well as what health care options are available. Providing people with peace-of-mind to enjoy a comfortable retirement is one of Morgans Port Macquarie’ primary roles. Financial Adviser with Morgans Port Macquarie Sam Wicks believes that there is certainly no one-plan-fits-all scenario available for retirement planning. “What makes a ‘comfortable retirement’ is different from person to person. One of the great joys of our profession is meeting a wide range of people and helping them achieve the things that matter to them personally,” he says. The cornerstone of a good retirement

plan starts with creating realistic and measurable goals and objectives. “We essentially look at three key factors when it comes to planning how your money will last in retirement; Income, Capital and Estate Planning.” When assessing income levels, it is important to know how much is required for someone to live off, how income will be generated and ultimately how long the income will need to last. “Strategies for income management will often focus on how we can reduce tax, maximise superannuation and Centrelink entitlements,” says Wicks. When reviewing capital, ascertaining how much will be available to purchase items such as cars and holidays and whether people want to live off their earnings or draw down on their capital are the key considerations. Estate Planning contemplations will firstly establish if people want to leave money to their children or spend the lot and

enjoy themselves. Wicks advises that preparing for an effective transition into retirement is an important part of the planning process. “It is never too early to start planning for retirement, however we think it should definitely be on the agenda for those aged 50 years and above.” Quite often it is the small decisions that Morgans help their client’s make early in their lives that significantly improve their choices to create a ‘comfortable retirement’. “If you leave your planning too close to the point of retirement, you effectively limit the choices you have available and therefore perhaps compromise your ideal financial outcome”, he says. To help people navigate the financial considerations involved in planning for their retirement, Morgans are running free information seminars. To attend one of these seminars, please call 6583 1735 to reserve your seat or visit morgans.com.au/ portmacquarie/seminar

Say ‘hello’ to the world

Some of the cherry blossom sights of South Korea

Cherry trees a blooming delight

FOR nature lovers one of the world’s great sights is viewing mass displays of flowering cherry trees in full bloom. This mostly means visiting Japan in their mid-spring and it is a truly great sight. The only problem is that Japan at cherry blossom time is quite expensive and very crowded. The good news is that there is an even better alternative. Cherry blossom viewing in South Korea is every bit as spectacular as in Japan but with smaller crowds and attractive prices. Macleay Valley Travel has a wonderful 15day fully conducted Korea Cherry Blossom Tour departing March 29. The price of $4985 per person twin share represents outstanding value as all the following are included in this low price: • Air fares with airport taxes and fuel levies with Cathay Pacific from Sydney and Brisbane into Busan and out of Seoul. • An 11-day overland tour of South Korea including viewing of mass displays of cherry blossoms in 5 different locations including the Jinhae Cherry Blossom Festival. • A 2-night stopover in Hong Kong with tours.

Vandals not just recent curse I SAW an article in a Sydney newspaper referring to vandalism. I can’t remember what the article was about, but I thought about it and thought vandalism would be a good topic. A Vandal was a member of a Germanic tribe which, in the fourth and fifth centuries, invaded western Europe and established settlements in various parts of it, finally migrating to northern Africa. The Germanic people moved southward from Scandinavia in the first four centuries AD, overrunning Gaul, Spain and northern Africa in the fifth century and sacking Rome in 455. The Vandals were overthrown by Belisarius in 533 in the battle of Tricamarum. ln 1555 the comment was made: “changes caused by the commynge of the Gothics and Vandales and other Barbarians into Italy”. The devastation that they caused was so severe that the name was passed down about those who caused destruction. This led to one who acted like a Vandal and the willful or ignorant destruction of things of beauty or historical interest. In 1730 the comment was made: “We now have an entire translation of the Bible in the Vandalian tongue”. Over the years vandal adopted a lower case v to cover devastation by vandals. So today most people accept that when we talk about vandals we talk about people who

on society in more ways than one go about destroying things, or that’s what I think. Over the years various words have sprung up over vandalism. How about vandalism – the ruthless destruction of anything beautiful or venerable. But then we get vandalise, vandalism, vandalistic, vandalistically, vandalously, or vandalic. It’s common knowledge that graffiti is an illegal act which has plagued society for years. But how many people really understand the impact and ramifications it has throughout society? Graffiti vandalism is most commonly conducted by males aged between 12-25 years, peaking at the ages of 15 and 16. What surprises most is that graffiti is conducted by those across all social backgrounds; it’s not exclusive to the lower-socio economic classes. These individuals often succumb to peer pressure; the need to “fit in”. This boosts their self-esteem and provides enjoyment during the act of conducting graffiti, viewing it afterwards

and having it recognised by others. Graffiti places an enormous strain on society in more ways than one. For many, graffiti is a gateway crime. On the search for greater thrills, graffiti vandals resort to shoplifting, destruction of property and other forms anti-social gang behaviour. Graffiti also has numerous financial implications. All levels of society are left out of pocket, from state and local government, business owners, schools, sporting clubs and community organisations, all the way to homeowners. In New South Wales alone, vandalism costs local government and property owners more than $300 million annually. In Victoria, a graffiti removal program has removed more than two million square metres of graffiti since 2005 – enough to cover the MCG approximately 100 times. Those who don’t act upon graffiti quickly often face repeated acts of vandalism. lauriebarber.com; lbword@midcoast.com

GOLF ROUND UP Brought to you by Port Macquarie Golf Club

Port Macquarie Golf Club

PORT Macquarie Golf Club announces the staging of its Seaside Classic Week of Golf. This will be the 51st Seaside Classic. The week commences with a medley 4BBB Stableford and the Morgans CIMB Junior Seaside Classic on Sunday 29th July and concludes with the 51st Seaside Classic Championship over 36 holes on the weekend of the 4th and 5th August. The Ladies Championship is also a 36 holes event and is being played on Tuesday 31st July and Wednesday 1st August. Other events include a single stableford for both men and women on Monday 30th July, a Men’s 4BBB Stableford on Thursday 2nd August and a Medley 4BBB Stableford on Friday 3rd August. Port Macquarie Golf Club is pleased to once again have Morgans in alliance with CIMB as the major sponsor of the Seaside Classic Week of Golf. Supporting sponsors include Oxley Insurance Brokers, Aristocrat, Port Tyre World, Donovan Oates & Hannaford Lawyers, GR Consulting Engineer, the Commonwealth Bank of Australia, Radio 2MC and Star FM, Tooheys, Prime7, Lexus Port Macquarie, Hennessy Coffee and Port Macquarie Pro Shop. The Seaside Classic, over 36 holes on the final weekend, is a Vardon event from the compulsory list. To qualify for the Vardon Trophy, which is the symbol of supremacy in NSW amateur golf, a player must play a number of rounds from the compulsory list. Once again the Seaside Classic will count towards the Senior Order of Merit. The Ladies’ Classic is a Jean Derrin event which is the ladies’ equivalent of the Vardon Trophy. The Seaside Classic always attracts a quality field and this year is no exception with entries from all over the state as well as some from interstate. Many past winners of this event have gone on to make successful professional careers. Once again the field will include a number of players with plus handicaps. There are particularly strong contingents coming from both the Sydney and Newcastle areas and there are several players from interstate. The defending champion is Nathan Waters from Forster Tuncurry. Nathan’s winning score was even par 142. The Port Macquarie challenge will be led by youngsters Jackson Jubelin, Tom Biron and Rowan Cooper, and it wouldn’t surprise to see one of them do well. Phil Pye has won the event twice and other locals who could mount a challenge include Stefan Walker, Dave Bagust, Terry Davis, Steve McCarthy and John Hutchison The women’s defending champion is Jane Horne from Wauchope with a winning score of 168. There are a number of past winners in this year’s event with strong entries coming from Wauchope and Coffs Harbour. The local challenge will be led by Geri Lavender and Sheena Gunn. The Port Macquarie Golf Course is a challenging layout where the wind has a strong influence on scoring and the course is in excellent condition. The course record, which stands at 63, was set by Paul Marantz in the 2001 Pro-am and equaled by Nathan Goodchild in winning the 2002 Seaside Classic and Matt Millar in the 2017 Port Macquarie Pro-Am.

footytips

Get set for sprint home indicators say Knights, but let’s try one more time for JT. Your Local Independent tips: Cowboys Bulldogs v Wests Tigers (Friday, July 27, 7.55pm, ANZ Stadium, Sydney): The Tigers have the faintest sniff of finals football. They are ninth on 20 points, four points behind three teams on 24. They also had a massive upset win over the Rabbitohs last weekend. Meanwhile the Dogs are equal last, with two other teams, so have some motivation to steer clear of the wooden spoon. However the Tigers have many more reasons to win. Your Local Independent tips: Tigers Sea Eagles v Panthers (Saturday, July 28, 3pm, Lottoland, Sydney): The Panthers are in free-fall, winning just one of their past five games. Their form against the Broncos last weekend was terrible. Manly weren’t much better, getting whacked by the Roosters. The money is flowing towards the Panthers. They certainly have the players to turn things around, but that must start now. Nothing worse than going into the finals with losing form. Your Local Independent tips: Panthers Rabbitohs v Eels (Saturday, July 28, 5.30pm, ANZ Stadium, Sydney): Rabbits will be very keen to re-adjust their radar after a surprise touch-up up by the Tigers last weekend. They can’t afford to look beyond the last-placed Eels. A big win here is needed. The Eels … well, they are coming off a win over the Dogs, but this is a lot tougher. Your Local Independent tips: Rabbitohs Storm v Raiders (Saturday,

Sharon Griffiths

July 28, 7.35pm, AAMI Park, Melbourne): The Storm juggernaut is reaching top gear. Last weekend they went across The Ditch and won a real tough clash with the Warriors. Melbourne are in top spot and their recent form is flawless – five from five. The Raiders will be still kicking stones from their controversial loss to the Sharks last weekend. The more that debacle continues this week, the less likely they will have their heads back in the game. Your Local Independent tips: Storm Titans v Warriors (Sunday, July 29, 2pm, Cbus Super Stadium, Gold Coast): The Titans let another one slip last weekend – the story of their season. Meanwhile the Warriors have every reason to be at 110%. They are in eighth spot and must start a winning run through to the finals. They were good against the Storm last weekend despite losing and have a lot more reasons to win than the Titans. Your Local Independent tips: Warriors Roosters v Dragons (Sunday, July 29, 4.10pm, Allianz Stadium, Sydney): A really good one to finish off the weekend. Interestingly the bookies’ early market favours the Roosters - $1.68 / $2.20. Certainly they are the street-corner tip to be the team to join Melbourne in the grand final. However the Dragons’ camp is far from lacking confidence. They climbed over the Cowboys last weekend and still have plenty of fire in their belly. Your Local Independent tips: Dragons

indicators “sayAllKnights,

IT’S a very interesting ladder with just six games to go in the NRL. There’s a cluster of three teams leading on 28 points – Storm, Dragons, Rabbitohs. Then two on 26 points – Roosters and Sharks. And three more to round out the eight on 24 points – Panthers, Broncos and Warriors. Those eight teams appear to be fighting out the finals make-up, with the Tigers in ninth on 20 points. So every game now is a potential land-mine for those top sides. Lose and you not only lose momentum at the business end of the season, but you may also relinquish a key finals position. Let’s see who has their game face on this weekend. Broncos v Sharks (Thursday, July 26, 7.50pm, Suncorp Stadium, Brisbane): Both teams coming off a win last weekend and both teams in solid form. The Broncos had a big home win over the Panthers which brushed aside the doubters. Their recent form (four wins, one loss) indicates they are playing well at the right end of the season. For the Sharks, they should be bolstered by the return of Josh Dugan and Luke Lewis from injury. Bookies have Brisbane marginally in front, so let’s go with that. Your Local Independent tips: Broncos Cowboys v Knights (Friday, July 27, 6pm, 1300 SMILES Stadium, Townsville): Everyone wants the Cows to win one for the retiring JT, but despite plenty of effort, they just keep coming up short. They are at home this weekend, which will help. The Knights welcome back the freakish Kalyn Ponga from injury and they are coming off a win over the Titans. All
