Giving peace a chance By NIKALA SIM

IN a world fraught with war and human atrocities peace seems like an untouchable goal. But our own newly appointed National Peace Ambassador, Pix Jonasson, pictured, will join with representatives from 196 nations to together try to reach that goal. “For a long time I have been on a personal journey of peace and am now looking beyond myself,” Ms Jonasson said. “My mission is to positively impact the lives of others and I know I can’t do that alone, so

connecting with people who can help is the next step.” Some time ago the Port Macquarie woman subscribed to the emails of Director of the Global Peace Initiative Dr Paula Fellingham. Ms Jonasson said her email inbox is often inundated, but one day she opened one of Dr Fellingham’s emails and its contents ‘just hit’ her. “I sent through my nomination to be a National Peace Ambassador for the 2016 World Parliament on Spirituality,” she says. • Continued Page 3

Local is giving peace a chance

Fabulous four, from left, Kerry-Ann Weirick O’Donnell, Joseph O’Donnell, David Kinney, Emily Kinney and Arthur Kinney are the brains behind Port Macquarie’s new comic and game store.

Comicbook heroes By NIKALA SIM

IN the year that Wonder Woman turns 75 it is timely that lovers of comics and board games get a place to hang out and pursue their passions. Spoiler Alert! is the brainchild of fabulous four David and Emily Kinney and Joseph and Kerry-Ann Weirick O’Donnell. The dynamic duos met in June at a Port Macquarie-Hastings Council workshop aimed at filling empty commercial premises in the city centre with start-up businesses. “We ended up sitting at a table together and discovered our skills and interests were complementary,” David Kinney said. The 38-year-old had been pursuing his childhood dream, of opening a comic shop, which was well on the road to fruition. “I started the business online and participated in NEIS (New Enterprise Incentive Scheme),” Mr Kinney said. “I don’t think I could have done it without NEIS because it’s the nuts and bolts that get you every time.” This federal government scheme assists eligible job-seekers to become self-employed business owners through study and mentoring.

Key areas identified, for the business, were the need to create a safe space for children, to make it accessible for people in wheelchairs, add sensory elements to aid with autism, and have a business plan with plenty of room to develop, Mr Kinney said. “There are so many different game groups in the area and it is good for them to have a safe space to use which is close to parking, the taxi rank, bus stop and food outlets,” game master Joseph O’Donnell said. There was a large movement toward board games being collaborative, he added, and this social aspect played a large part in their business philosophy. “We’re trying to do something positive, to create a community space where people can come and enjoy doing something fun together.” Mother of two Mrs Kinney said there were many educational benefits to games including team building, problem solving, reading, logic, maths and strategy. Comics were a great way to learn how to read, she added. Events are on the Spoiler Alert! agenda for the future including family nights, anime screenings and dress-up events, Kerry-Ann Weirick O’Donnell said. “We’ve had a really nice response from the

community and there is so much potential for partnerships with complementary businesses.” On its first day of trading last Saturday around 300 people stepped through the door of Spoiler Alert! Comic book fan Joseph Marshall travelled from Bonny Hills and ended up joining in some game play. “I think it will be a place I spend a bit of time,” the 18-year-old said. Port Macquarie’s Jake Mavin said he had been wanting something like Spoiler Alert! to come to town for some time. Game playing was an under-appreciated past-time, the 24-year-old said, with the closest similar stores being in Newcastle and Sydney. The store’s zero tolerance of bullying was wholeheartedly supported by 19-year-old James Cashion. “I absolutely agree with the rules – they make Spoiler Alert! the perfect example of what a store like this should be like.” For more information visit www.spoileralert. com.au or pop in to the shop in the Ritz Centre, under Majestic Cinemas Port Macquarie. To find out about The New Enterprise Incentive Scheme (NEIS) visit etcltd.com.au or phone 1800 007 400.

• From Page 1 “I sent my resume, had an interview and was over the moon when my volunteer commitment was accepted.” The Parliament will be held between November 17 and 20 in Salt Lake City, Utah, with around 2000 people attending in person and millions more in attendance online. The goal of the event is to increase the level of love, prosperity, and peace in the world. Ambassadors will initiate a Global Peace Initiative and author a Peace Master Action Plan (Peace MAP). Parliament Chairwoman Dr Fellingham said this mission was a massive undertaking but she believed the goal of peace was absolutely attainable. “Technological advances have made global communication easy,” Dr Fellingham said. “People worldwide yearn for peace humanity is so ready for a Peace Master Action Plan that works. “Australia, the Hastings area and Port Macquarie are privileged to have Pix Jonasson selected as the National Peace Ambassador for Australia.” Post-parliament our local global ambassador will help implement the Peace MAP through collaboration with individuals, media, organisations, businesses, schools and governments. Ms Jonasson is already set up for this task with a vast professional network, marketing skills and a heart brimming with desire to achieve the goal of world peace. She is recognised as a ‘linchpin’, Dr Fellingham said, the woman who brings people together to achieve the desired outcomes for issues of local, regional, national and global significance. The Port Macquarie ambassador will gather data on progress to inform a Global Peace Initiative Study put together by experienced statisticians. “I am blessed with the ability to use my public voice to help those who are unable to speak for themselves,” Ms Jonasson said. People of all ages, cultures, religions and spiritual paths are invited to attend the 2016 World Parliament on Spirituality. For more information go to www. worldparliamentonspirituality.org

The quality of the information is a direct reflection of how little time it took to prepare – the addendum is, for the most part, a repetition of the original development proposal.

Port Macquarie-Hastings Council appears to have handed CTK NR a gold pass at the expense of the wider community. Council made a ‘minor change’ (councils words, not mine) to planning permissions to make extractive industries permissible in State Forests, when previously they were prohibited.

A licensing system currently controls how many animals can be killed, across the state, and this must be reported to the Office of the Environment and Heritage. This system operates under the National Parks and Wildlife Act. The new Bill proposes to get rid of this system entirely. This will allow people to kill animals unchecked with no accountability. Seriously - are they mental? We have scientific evidence which proves species are in decline. The fact that we have species that

are threatened with extinction is of concern in itself. Our native animals need protection. Biodiversity conservation is of vital importance to our future. We are finding medical and agricultural solutions to problems all the time. If we get rid of species we lose the opportunity to learn. Will there be a day when we need to change our coat of arms because there are no longer kangaroos and emus? I say a resounding ‘NO’ to this change Mr Baird. I’M going off track this week because I can. Blondes have more fun! More fun than who? Every few years I change my hair colour and go blonde - because I can. This time last year I decided to go blonde again, (probably a once a decade occurrence). I was feeling low and thought I’d give myself a change. Change is supposed to be as good as a holiday. Also, my husband likes blondes, so why not give it a go? Over the last 12 months I’ve been doing a little social experiment of my own and have busted the myth that blondes have more fun. Sorry to all the blondes out there, but I have not had more fun. People I deal with all the time (a lot of men) now suddenly repeat themselves to me, speak slowly to me and the worst of all is the persistent question, ‘Do you understand what I’m saying?’ Seriously? I changed my hair colour. My brain did not disappear down the plughole when I rinsed the colour out! I had one guy who I met after talking over the phone for a couple of weeks. He took one look at me and said: “OMG you’re blonde! You are nothing like I expected. You were intelligent over the phone!” Far out! I did not have a frontal lobotomy; I dyed my hair! Guess what? I’m still intelligent! I’m all for change, but, looking back? I’d take the holiday! Beware, the fiery redhead is coming back!

Vinnies set to give ‘hand up’

Power pain now to avoid more later

By SUE PATERICK

ESSENTIAL Energy customers in Dondingalong have been experiencing power outages recently but according to the company, the area will benefit from current upgrade and maintenance work. A spokesperson for Essential Energy said the upgrades would improve reliability and allow for future growth. The significant project involves contractors replacing more than 3.1 kilometres of powerline with thicker, stronger and longer lasting aluminium cable, plus eight power poles, cross arms and associated maintenance work along Gowings Hill Road. This is necessary to help strengthen the network as storm season starts. To allow contractors to safely complete the work some residents in Dondingalong will be affected by up to three planned power outages. The company apologises for this inconvenience and assures customers that extra resources were brought in to keep the outages to three. Crews have, and will, work as quickly as safety will allow to get the power back on each day. Essential Energy understands that any power interruption is an inconvenience for customers. Business customers may contact Essential Energy on 13 20 80 for consideration of reimbursement for generator hire costs (for planned work). The safety of the network and the community is Essential Energy’s number one priority. Throughout August customers in Dondingalong and surrounding areas experienced outages for vegetation management, which involved the removal of tree branches encroaching on the network. This minimised the risk of an unplanned outage. If any customer has questions in relation to planned work affecting their power supply they can contact Essential Energy on 13 20 80.

FOR Macleay Valley residents experiencing difficulties, the St Vincent de Paul’s official opening of its new premises at 40 Belgrave Street will mean help is closer at hand. Over a dozen members of the community and various church groups watched Dunghutti Elder, John Kelly, perform a smoking ceremony for the new welfare centre. Father Paul Gooley then blessed the centre and declared it open. According to Betty Green, President of St Vincent de Paul All Saints Kempsey Welfare Conference, the basic philosophy is a hand up and not a hand out. Volunteers sit down with people and discuss what is happening in their life, what difficulties they are facing and the areas where they need assistance. “As they tell their story, we identify other causes that could be making their life difficult,” Betty said. “It is usually basic needs like shelter, food, community involvement, social contact and employment.” The initial discussion may take up to 1.5 hours, and the immediate needs, such as shelter and food, are addressed first. “Some people are sleeping on the streets or in their cars, and that’s an urgent situation,” Betty added. Part of the role of the St Vincent de Paul Welfare Centre is also to utilise the network of community groups and non-government organisations with specific expertise and funding to help. Betty said one of the main things people had trouble with these days was paying their large electricity bills. She explained that the Welfare Centre would liaise with the relevant energy provider on a person’s behalf and negotiate the best way to get on top of an outstanding debt.

Slim’s festival a hit By SUE PATERICK

THE Kempsey Showground was packed with country music fans at the weekend enjoying some toe- tapping music and great comradery at the annual Slim Dusty Country Music Festival. Some fans set up their caravans at the showground while others stayed at Crescent Head or another great location in the beautiful Macleay Valley. Ruth and Bill Jupp from Coffs Harbour were staying the whole week and were really enjoying themselves. It was the second year they have attended the lyrical event and both were big Slim Dusty fans. “There has been some great concerts,” Ruth said, who was born in Kempsey. Kevin and Judy Bosse from Albury/ Wodonga have been in the valley for a week and chose to stay out at Crescent Head. They have been exploring the shire every day and enjoyed the country music festival. Kevin is a big Slim fan. For first timers, Colin and Gaye JohnsonWeeks, the festival was great fun. They attended with six friends, who were also enjoying the music. This chirpy couple are members of the Kempsey Country Music Club and tour up and down the coast, performing 26 concerts a month for senior citizens. It was the first time Ron Haling from Sydney had attended the festival too and he thought it was fantastic. “There is a great gathering of people from all around Australia and wonderful talent in the performers.” he said. “I’ll be back.” Owen Blundell, impersonator and singer with the Gunbarrel Highwaymen, played at a concert the night before and thought the festival and the crowd were excellent.

THE COWPER REPORT With Luke Hartsuyker

Federal Member for Cowper

THE cost of private health has ballooned over recent years making it out of reach for many. This has had a greater impact on older members of the community who often rely on healthcare the most. This poses a potential issue for a large section of the Cowper electorate given that 32.1 per cent of the Port Macquarie-Hastings and 27.7 per cent of the Kempsey Shire populations are aged 60 years and over, compared with 24.5 per cent for Regional NSW. To take pressure off private health insurance premiums for all Australians, the Coalition Government announced it would reduce the cost of thousands of medical devices ranging from pacemakers and lenses to knees and hips by half-a-billion dollars. Reforms to regulations over the years have seen the cost of some medical devices inflated by thousands of dollars for private patients, which are paid for through higher insurance premiums by patients. The Government’s new reforms are being made to four categories of devices – hips, knees, intraocular lenses and cardiac devices. These reductions are sustainable for the industry and will ultimately benefit consumers through reduced premiums. The Coalition Government’s prostheses reforms include: • Reducing the cost of medical devices as set by the Prostheses List by 10 per cent for cardiac devices and intraocular lenses and 7.5 per cent for hip and knee replacements from 20 February 2017. This will reduce costs for insurers by $86 million in the first year, and total $500 million over the next six years. • Reconstituting the new Prostheses List Advisory Committee (PLAC) that will develop, consult and advise the Government on further changes to the prostheses listing arrangements. • Investigating a move towards applying a more robust and transparent price disclosure model of ongoing, sustainable reductions to the cost of medical devices through the new PLAC. • Faster access to new innovative medical device technologies through improved listing processes without compromising safety. • Considering a transparent way to reimburse hospitals for the costs of maintaining inventory of medical devices so that they are on hand when needed. These reforms to medical devices are part of a broader package of reforms that will make private health insurance more affordable and easier to understand for consumers, including: • Developing easily understood categories of private health insurance policies (eg. labelled gold, silver, bronze) • Weeding out junk policies that push more patients into public hospitals • Taking action to bring down premiums by making regulatory changes that will reduce unnecessary cost pressures in the system.

The Oaky Smokies - Heather Smith, Harvey Smith, Brendon Flett, Peter Rhodes, Belinda Barnes and Todd Barnes

Our red-hot winners By LIZZIE McLEOD

RED-HOT champions the ‘Oaky Smokies’ have been cooking up a storm in Wingham. The barbequing competition rookies made a feast of the local round of the Australian Barbecue Championships. The competition was fierce including 33 teams. Although this was the ‘Oaky Smokies’ debut in barbecue competitions, it didn’t stop them from coming out on top with first place for grain fed brisket and grand champion for the prestigious brisket challenge. The team of friends included Heather and Harvey Smith and Todd and Belinda Barnes from Pappinbarra, west of Wauchope, Brendon Flett from Newcastle, and Peter Rhodes from Sydney. “We are pretty stunned,” said Harvey. “First event out and it’s really the holy grail of

barbecues cooking the brisket and we nailed it. We still can’t believe it.” The brisket is the large muscular piece of meat underneath the cow’s neck and it doesn’t respond at all to fast cooking. This is why it is known as the most difficult to get just perfect. “The brisket is the hardest one to get right,” said Harvey. “There’s a very distinct criteria involved in judging the brisket. It comes down to a lot of things like the taste, the bask - the outer black layer of the meat that you get inside the barrel, and the texture.” The team’s plan is to keep competing. “We really did it because we are all mates and we just wanted a weekend together,” said Harvey. “We said if we’d come in the top 20 we’d be extremely happy and to win the challenge we were just over the moon. We really only do it because we like spending time with our mates.”

For anyone at home wanting to make the perfect brisket, Harvey has a tip or two to pass on. “If they want to cook the perfect brisket, it’s got to be long and slow so it’s got to be at 100120 centigrade inside the barrel. Use really good quality aged timber, and do it long and slow. And if they are interested in buying a smoker, I can build them one, we build the pits at home.” To enter these competitions, Harvey says that you don’t need to be a chef or qualified in this area, all you need is to be a lover of food. “I’m a mechanic by trade and a handyman by work, Brendan is a mechanic, Pete runs a wedding reception venue, and Todd and Belinda run a kitchen manufacturing business in Port Macquarie. None of us are chefs, we just love to cook. Our motto in life is ‘we live to eat, not eat to live’.”

MID North Coast woman Cath Young started her online home wares shop 7 years ago and is now one of Australia’s most successful sellers on Etsy. Ms Young is now looking to help other local businesses wanting to start their own online business by running a series of workshops across the Mid North Coast in conjunction with ETC. “The workshops will cover tips for setting up an online shop such as photography that best showcases your wares, distribution and pricing,” ETC’s Business Advisor Marilyn Breen said. “The practical workshop will help start-up, small and home-based businesses take a major step forward in building a viable and profitable business enterprise.” During the workshops Ms Young will be drawing upon her experience starting and growing her business My Bearded Pigeon which features cushions and wall hangings made from hand-designed fabrics. “My Bearded Pigeon now brings in around $80,000 a year, employs a seamstress part-time and pays my husband Neil for some of the administration tasks,” Ms Young said. According to Ms Young, Etsy was the ideal place for anyone wanting to start a business. “The outlay is tiny and your shop can grow with you. You can add items at your leisure and if you are going on holidays you can put your shop in vacation mode. Etsy charges a very small commission of 3.5% and only if you sell something; they don’t make money unless we do,” Ms Young said. “There are currently 1.6 million shops on Etsy and 24 million buyers looking, favouriting and buying what you have to sell. Etsy is the perfect place to sell what you make and reach a global audience, all from home.” The Etsy Seller Success workshop will be held on Friday, October 28, from 10am – 1pm at Kempsey RSL Club, 1 York Lane. Road repair and maintenance company, Stabilcorp, has been recognised again this time at the prestigious Hunter Manufacturing Awards presented at Wests City in Newcastle on Friday 21 October. Stabilcorp was named a Finalist in the Excellence in Innovation Category sponsored by patent attorneys Davies Collison Cave and was also named as a Finalist in the Excellence in Product Design sponsored by the University of Newcastle for the ShoulderMaster paver attachment designed and developed by the Wauchope based company. The awards ceremony last Friday night saw Stabilcorp awarded Highly Commended for both categories. Launched in September last year, the ShoulderMaster is a cutting-edge road repair and widening skid steer attachment that can quickly, safely and efficiently fix dangerous narrow roads and crumbling road shoulders to improve road safety and reduce serious injuries and fatalities on our roads. Stabilcorp Managing Director, Peta Pinson said, “These two awards come at a time when the business is newly branching out from specialized road maintenance and construction into manufacturing unique and innovative machinery designed to improve the way road repairs are carried out. It is a real honour to be acknowledged among an impressive line-up of seasoned manufacturers in a city such as the Newcastle and Hunter region.” The Hunter Manufacturing Awards (HMA) is in its 12 year and saw HMA Chairman Bob Cowan announce his decision to step down from the role as Chair at the award ceremony which was themed Past, Present and Future.

GRANT BURTENSHAW

How long have you lived in or around the Hastings/Macleay? My wife Lorraine and I moved here in 2005, but I had been working in Port for a year before that. What do you love most about the Hastings/ Macleay? Wow where do you start. The people are amazing, the location is second to none and the weather is meant to be the best in the world. What is there not to love. Where do you work and what do you love about your work? I am privileged to be a Mentor at the Edmund Barton Centre for Business Excellence. An organisation that is run by an amazing team of volunteers who want to ensure that both StartUp and existing businesses in our region prosper and create jobs. To date we have helped over 300 businesses get up and going in the Port Macquarie Hastings regions and a further 200+ outside the region. What do you like least about your work? There is nothing I don’t like about my role with the possible exception that from time to time I hear about a business in trouble and wonder why they haven’t sought our help, such a shame. How do you start your day? With a cup of coffee. What do you do in your spare time? I am on a number of other Boards and Committees such as the Port Macquarie Community College helping the team with wonderful initiatives, including SkillsLink Training, The School of Hard Knocks and as recently announced Nautilus Senior College and our future Enterprising Futures Australia. What is the achievement you are most proud of? I have had several recognised achievements in my life including an Award for the “Greatest Individual Contribution to the Telecommunications Industry”, but my proudest two are my family and the thanks I get from our clients of the Edmund Barton Centre for helping them and their businesses.

funding boost FUNDING Boost To Turn District Housing Into Homes: Local community groups, councils and charities have been given an opportunity to receive funding for projects in and around our social housing communities. The one-off grants of up to $50,000 are part of the NSW Government’s Social Housing Community Improvement Fund (SHCIF) - a three-year, $20million commitment to build stronger social housing communities. This is all about turning social housing areas into strong, vibrant communities that our residents are proud to call home. I’m excited by the possibilities that these grants can bring to our local social housing communities. A grant has been awarded for the following local project: • Port Macquarie-Hastings Council has received $50,000 to activate the Arboretum Parkland in Port Macquarie. For further details on the SHCIF visit: www. facs.nsw.gov.au/SHCIF or contact my office on 65840977. More Opportunities For Local Youth: Last week I announced that two local organisations have received almost $48,000 in funding under the Youth Opportunities program to deliver a number of initiatives in 2017. The NSW Government’s Youth Opportunities Program provides grant funding to organisations

to deliver youth-led, youth-driven community projects. The NSW Government is investing in grassroots projects that engage young people and aims to increase their participation in the community. I am so pleased the NSW Government is supporting Port Macquarie Neighbourhood Centre with a grant of $36,000 to run a learner driver mentoring program. The Aboriginal L2P program will support local disadvantaged Aboriginal youth to complete the required 120 hours driving experience to obtain their P1 driver’s license. Port Macquarie-Hastings Council has received $11,700 for the Hastings Youth Builders Festival. The two-day youth led festival aims to bring young people together with the wider community in events that showcase local music, art, sports, personal development, career pathways and health issues.

Energy workshop THE NSW Solar Bonus Scheme is coming to a close at the end of 2016. NSW Department of Industry, in collaboration with the Office of Environment and Heritage and with the support of Energy Forever and the Port Macquarie Hastings Sustainability Network, are hosting an Energy Opportunity Workshop in Port Macquarie. The impartial and independent workshop will provide information to premises receiving a 60c or 20c subsidised feed-in tariff about what is going to happen, plus information to understand how they can maximise benefits from their small scale renewable energy systems after the scheme ends. An independent energy expert will explain how the changes to the feed-in tariff will affect you, what you need to do in the lead up to the closure and the important steps you need to take. The session will also cover a range of clean energy opportunities, including how to understand the different metering arrangements (ie gross and net) and the benefits; the emerging technologies to consider including battery storage and energy monitoring devices and ways you can become more energy efficient to minimise your electricity bills. The workshop will be held on Tuesday, November 1, at the Glasshouse upstairs meeting room, 5.30pm to 7.30pm. To book your free seat visit www. energyopportunityworkshops.eventbrite. com.au

When papers were read for a reason

THE ransom note specified where the money had to be sent, but instead of getting money, the ‘kidnappers’ found a note that said ‘keep him’. So they tried again, but the next reply said ‘keep him at least two days more because I won’t have time to fix tea tonight or tomorrow’. Fortunately, little came from this kidnapping apart from a valuable lesson in the use of the English language. This was an exercise conducted by a teacher at St Albans Primary School in Victoria. I won’t mention any of the teachers’ names because the exercise was many years ago and the chief teacher is probably a grandmother by now. I can’t find the book either. I think I lent it to someone and it was never returned. But the book showed some ingenuity by the teachers involved who found some other way of encouraging children to learn not only English but maths also and a whole host of other subjects, such as geography. The children in one class, after discussing a political hostage drama overseas, constructed their own ransom notes listing demands, conditions and meeting places. They then passed their list of demands to other teachers at the school, who entered the spirit of the occasion

with their own original replies. The student ‘kidnappers’ had to use complete sentences, subjects and verbs. Spelling had to be correct, as did all punctuation used. The details of the exercise were listed in a booklet entitled The Newspaper in Your Classroom, prepared by the teachers of Victoria. The booklet described various ideas implemented to encourage young people to take a greater interest in reading, in this case reading newspapers. The ransom notes at St Albans were cut out of headings in a newspaper. Okay, I know some people will frown on an exercise encouraging children to write ransom notes, in case it encourages them to go out and repeat the exercise in a real-life environment. I’m just reporting what happened. I remember that the book had many other examples of how to encourage young students to

take a greater interest in a range of assignments. The teachers who wrote the book produced many ideas about a range of subjects. Some slow readers showed a dramatic improvement when assigned to read the sports pages of the local newspaper each day. Not only did their reading improve, but so did their mathematics as they checked the football and cricket scores. Some of the teams came from other countries and this exercise encouraged young students to learn about the other countries. Another teacher encouraged her students to write headlines, to emphasise the difficulty newspaper people have daily in contracting statements without losing the meaning. The exercise produced a range of headlines from Australian and overseas newspapers. Possibly one mentioned the commander who vowed to return: ‘MacArthur flies back to front’. Open Road apologised for publishing a photograph of a motor cycle travelling on the wrong side of the road. Have you noticed that many TV advertisements have the cars travelling on the wrong side of the road and some of the speakers tend to have funny accents? These advertisements couldn’t be from the USA, could they?

Walkers Crematorium & Memorial Gardens SITTING snugly on 27.5 hectares among the rolling green hills of Frederickton, Walkers Crematorium and Memorial Gardens opened in May this year, offering cremation facilities for local families. The view from the chapel looks out across lush green paddocks and serpentine Christmas Creek to the humpbacked peaks of the Great Dividing Range. Trees line the sweeping driveway and landscaped gardens of roses and flowers dot the tranquil site. Memorial walls and gardens provide families with a variety of options. There is also a large tree where families can scatter their loved one’s ashes, and remember them with a plaque. The modern chapel and tea room feature large expanses of glass, which allow natural light to flow in and take advantage of the magnificent views. Granite tiles and a neutral colour scheme harmonise with the natural landscape. The chapel seats approximately 200 people. Outside speakers and wide sweeping verandahs enhance the chapel and cater for larger funerals. A large screen can display slides, movies and photographs. Stunning artworks of the Macleay Valley from local artist Mark Pryor were commissioned for both the chapel and tearoom. Decorated as tastefully as the chapel, the tearoom has a commercial kitchen and offers full catering facilities. Mourners can relax in the comfortable

Walkers Crematorium features a modern chapel (top right) and tasteful tearoom (right) set amid a beautiful, tranquil garden setting lounges, or reminisce with family and friends in cosy tables and chairs in the adjacent dining area. The large wooden verandah, overlooking the mountains, offers a more casual setting. The car park is easily accessible to both the chapel and tearoom. It was Thomas Walker who moved to the Macleay Valley in the mid-1850s and made coffins, boats and rudders.

According to a journal from the Macleay River Historical Society, in those early days the dearly-departed were transported down the valley’s creeks and rivers in cedar coffins on floating cedar hearses. Behind the hearse was a flotilla of boats. In 1886 Thomas imported one of the latest hearses to the Macleay. It sides were made of glass and ‘surmounted

with heavy plumes’. Thomas was recognised as the Macleay Valley’s first funeral director. This tradition of excellence has been carried down through six generations of the Walker family, who have operated a funeral business in Kempsey. Sponsored by SkillsLink Training - your community college.

Farewell to our

trailblazing leader PORT Macquarie Community College is going through a new phase of growth, and we’re lucky to be celebrating this exciting time with our departing manager Val Evans, while welcoming our new manager Valerieanne Byrnes. Val Evans came to the college four years ago, at a time when we were experiencing very tight times, along with many other human services in this region. She has steered the ship wisely and with great innovative ideas that have changed our whole business focus. Now we are seen as leaders in supporting vulnerable community groups, such as people living with disability, mental health challenges and young people at risk, as well as continuing our work in the business of providing quality accredited training. We wish Val every good fortune during her retirement and look forward to seeing her in the area putting her feet up for a well deserved rest! Valerieanne Byrnes comes fresh from Western College in Dubbo, where she has overseen a similar transformation of another community college for the past three years. Starting an alternative high school from scratch, and running special programs for young mothers with babies, along with programs for at risk young people have been part of Valerieanne’s core work recently. Prior to working in Dubbo, Valerieanne worked in various Business and Strategy roles within the Not For Profit sector, including executive manager of a community mutual group. She has specialised in managing organisational change, workforce planning, industrial relations and development. With management experience in overseeing community investment, credit administration and risk, Valerieanne will be well equipped to take over from Val Evans’ wise stewardship of our finances. Having a passion for horses and alpacas, Valerieanne and her family will settle in the area and enjoy our unique climate. Call in and say hello, at 77 Hastings River Drive, at the bottom of Clifton Drive, or ring 65837288 and visit our website on www. skillslinktraining.com.au to see our other programs and courses.

Wauchope move ‘bizarre’ NOT happy Jan. The recent decision by Port Macquarie Hastings Council to pursue the re-zoning and development of sporting fields in Wauchope instead of pursuing the purchase of the existing Tuffins Lane sporting fields, is nothing short of bizarre. With reports suggesting that council could have (or could still) purchase the Tuffins Lane sporting fields for less than $1 million, yet decided instead to knock it back is hard to understand on a number of levels. It also appears that council feel they have kicked some goals with ‘planning for the longterm future of sports groups’ by creating new infrastructure in Wauchope - but many people see this as more of a kick in the guts. If the council feels that they’ve got it right on this one, in my opinion, they’re dead-set wrong. Hearing and reading recent quotes that council couldn’t or wouldn’t pay more than its own

valuation for the land is an interesting scenario on its own. As previously noted, as a councillor, I wasn’t aware that there was a negotiation process going on, let alone recall any decision point for the full council to consider the purchase of the land in question. Frankly, this is a governance issue worth further enquiry. No disrespect to whoever it was that valued the Tuffins Lane land for council, but the true dollar value of the land in my view could only be arrived at when one considers the potential use and development potential. Then add in the social and economic costs to the potential loss of the

site and without being too smart, you’ll see that what Panthers were asking for the site (meeting in the middle of both the Panthers and Council land valuations) was more than reasonable. Fast forward to the current decision of council at the October Council meeting and we see council has opted to spend millions of dollars in pursuing new infrastructure in Wauchope versus the less than $1 million to retain Tuffins. In short, the council has compounded a pretty loose decision in knocking back the opportunity to buy Tuffins and opted to spend millions in building new infrastructure that will frankly do nothing more than replace what we already had – not adding value to the local sporting infrastructure. Amanda Thompson, Helen Ross, Maureen Cooke, Sandy Rosenbladh, Tracey Kenny and Rob Moorehead are all decked out for this weekend’s Christmas Gift Fair at Panthers Port Macquarie

Celebrate joy of giving WITH your help the joy of Christmas will last well into the new year. The Christmas Gift Fair this weekend is an opportunity to grab unique gifts and put funds in the coffers of a wonderful community facility which assists adults recovering from mental illness. For each of the last eight years, the annual fair has raised funds for Endeavour Clubhouse at 176 Hastings River Drive in Port Macquarie. Fair organiser Ruth Durrant said she had watched a close friend suffer from mental illhealth and wondered if her outcome may have been different if she had access to a facility like Endeavour Clubhouse. “The clubhouse helps people to rebuild their self-confidence and social skills,” Mrs Durrant said. “Retraining also offers people the opportunity to re-enter the workforce.” Local businesses have thrown their support behind the cause and as a result the Christmas Gift Fair raffle has many prizes.

Purchase tickets during the fair to win a selection of gift vouchers or first prize of $500 petrol kindly donated by our local service clubs. Organisers have attracted a large number of stallholders from outside the area to ensure a fresh selection of gifts, Mrs Durrant said. The 48 stalls will include iced cakes, Christmas puddings, patchwork, painted china, timber work, jewellery, mosaic and a stall of special sauces. A wide variety of entertainment will be performed by Let’s Dance Rock & Roll, U3A Folk Dancers, Salsa Dancers, Z Chords, Melodic Fortunes, Sing Australia and Hastings Koalas Orchestra. The fair, held in the Panthers Port Macquarie auditorium, is open on Saturday from 10am until 4pm and Sunday from 10am until 3pm (October 29 and 30). Entry is a $3 donation which will assist nongovernment funded Endeavour Clubhouse to pay for its ongoing costs.

FOR 129 years the Hotel Kempsey has been providing a comfortable place to stay, an atmospheric restaurant serving hearty meals, and a classic bar where patrons could down a few ales and talk about life. For Hotel Kempsey owners, Peter and Deb Gavrilis, being a part of someone’s great memories has been their main objective. In fact, providing a venue that offers good food and accommodation has been a part of the Gavrilis family tradition for 40 years. The Hotel Kempsey was first owned by their Dad, Con, who was a great collector, before being taken over by Peter and Deb. Con’s marvellous artworks, nautical equipment and other interesting memorabilia have turned the historic pub’s wood-panelled interior into a time capsule. But like all good things, the end has come and Peter and Deb have sold their beloved pub. The new owner, Dave Richards, took over on Tuesday October 25 and said he will carry on with the traditions that Peter and his team

had set before him. Peter and Deb both wished Dave the best of luck. They also wanted to say thank you for the community’s support over the past 40 years, especially to the Macleay Valley’s sporting clubs such as the Kempsey Cannonballs and the Nulla Cricket Club. Even though this well-known couple wanted to carry on the family tradition of owning a pub, Deb’s health issues were a deciding factor in the sale. Peter will now have the time to concentrate on his farming interests at Jerseyville, while Deb wants to look after her health. The Hotel Kempsey’s new owner also owns the Great Northern Hotel in West Kempsey. Josh Hadfield manages the Great Northern and will also take over the management of the Hotel Kempsey. “The challenge of running two hotels together is something I’m looking forward to it,” he said.

Pete and Deb would like to thank all of the staff and loyal customers for their patronage over the last 40 years.

Council works on Crescent water supply

Rotary to bring waves to wheelies By SUE PATERICK SUNLIGHT is dancing across the aquamarine waves at Horseshoe Bay in South West Rocks (SWR), but for people with mobility problems there is just no way they can frolic in the sea like other beach goers. For Margaret Harrison, pictured, who has been confined to a wheelchair for 10 years, not being able to enjoy a swim is a real issue. Margaret, a retired journalist and committee member of the Rotary Club of SWR, is hoping the Club can raise $20,000 to buy 100 per cent recycled plastic matting that can be rolled out onto the sand at Horseshoe Bay. “The matting takes wheelchairs, strollers, people with walkers and rescue vehicles,” she said. “You can even land a helicopter on it.” The Rotary Club of SWR thinks Horseshoe Bay is the perfect site because it is a patrolled beach. “And with the playground being upgraded it would be a natural transition for parents with strollers to wander down to the sand,” Margaret

added. “There is a ramp down to the beach already and we are hoping to get matting all the way down to the sea during patrol time.” The beach matting is so effective, the Rotary Club of SWR has a letter of support from the Spinal Cord Association. Raising the $20,000 needed to purchase the beach matting will be the Club’s major fundraising project for 2016 and 2017. Club President, Diana Clark, said they were really excited about this project. “It will be a great asset for the community and visitors to SWR so they can access the water,” she said. “And we are looking forward to working with Kempsey Shire Council (KSC) and the SWR Surf Life Saving Club to bring this project to fruition.” Vice President of the SWR Surf Life Saving Club, Anne Pearce, said when Diana initially floated the beach matting project, her first concern was where to store the matting and who would lay it out and roll it back up every day. Margaret and Diana are hoping to use Council’s storage shed at the Rocks and Council workers for this process.

WHAT’S FOR DINNER?

Director of Infrastructure Services at KSC, Robert Scott, said the beach matting project was a real opportunity to link up with Council’s strategies of beach safety, tourism and access. “This project ticks so many boxes and links in heavily with what Council want to achieve,” he said. “There is some work to do on how this project would be implemented but Council is looking to partner with community groups that are developing solutions and making positive changes in the Macleay Valley for the benefit of everyone.” He said the beach matting proposal follows Project Blueprint earlier this year, where Coastal Public Safety Risk Assessments were completed for every beach and rock platform in NSW. “The recommendations support all levels of government and community stakeholders to work together to improve beach access and safety,” Mr Scott added. Undertaken by Australian CoastSafe on behalf of Surf Life Saving NSW, Project Blueprint is a NSW Government’s Water Safety Black Spot Fund initiative.

IN continuing efforts to review processes and seek to improve the quality of the Crescent Head water supply, from Monday, October 31, Kempsey Shire Council will alter the disinfection process currently used. Disinfection is an essential step in any water treatment operation to eliminate hazardous microorganisms from drinking water. Council’s Director Infrastructure Services Robert Scott says Council has been using a chloramination disinfection process since 2014 as part of a trial to improve water quality. “Analysis of the trial results has shown very little change in water quality and for that reason we will revert back to the straight chlorination process at the end of the month,” he said. “As a priority we will also move forward with the investigation and design process for construction of a new water treatment plant upgrade that would incorporate filtration, which is what is required to ensure sustainable delivery of quality drinking water.” Funding has been allocated to the new plant across Council’s budgets for the next two years. During the changeover to chlorination, Council will undertake flushing of the distribution system. This is not expected to cause any disruptions to supply however some customers may occasionally experience discoloured water. Customers may also notice a chlorine taste in the water as a result of this changeover. This action is undertaken to ensure that the best quality drinking water possible is provided to the community. If residents continue to experience issues with taste, odour or discolouration, they should immediately contact Council’s Customer Service Centre on 6566 3200.

A CALL for bibles for the Palliative Care Unit of Wauchope District Memorial Hospital has been met by Beechwood Uniting Church. The church’s help was sought by Wauchope Hospital Volunteers President Roger Adams after multiple requests from palliative care patients for bibles could not be fulfilled. The congregation responded with eight Bibles and a commitment to replenish stocks when next needed. Beechwood Uniting Church chairman Bill Spence and secretary George Campbell presented the gift of the word of God. “We heard there was a need, so we decided to

DONATE TODAY AND INVEST IN YOUNG PEOPLE

WE KISS GOD THROUGH GLASS (by N A Armstrong) The intimacy God gave us, As quickly the moments pass We use for each other only But God, we kiss through glass. We know He’s out there somewhere Of that we make a farce. Even though Jesus came to tell us, We still kiss God through glass. It’s time we got it together, And drew near and not let it pass, The time is now for reality, To stop kissing God through glass.

Stuart Symons and Gary King battle tough conditions in last weeklend’s racing

Strong winds a test for Port sailors PORT Macquarie Sailing Club’s double header on Sunday consisted of their 7th Spring series race in the morning, a BBQ lunch, and the Second Club Championship race in the afternoon. The strong South Wester with a moderate run in tide made for a lot of fast sailing and a few spills, injuries, and damage. The Seventh Spring Series race in the morning saw a lot of fast sailing where Frank O’Rourke on Dino took the yardstick win in the multihulls, followed by Jack Corthals on

WEDNESDAY’S club select triples attracted only 16 diehards. The winners on the day were Graeme Atkins, Stan Galbraith and Tony Kundicevic with +13, which is the number of shots they picked up on the last 5 ends. Friday afternoon we had a handy turnout of 10 teams for our nominated pair’s event. The winners on the day with +19 were a new pairing in Graeme Atkins and Ray Houghton. With Dougie Donovan away sailing the 7 sevens for a month his spot with Ray maybe in jeopardy! The runners up were the father and visiting son combination of Shane and Tim Renshall with +12. Tim said at least Shane listens and takes directions, unlike his mother. Saturday’s Mixed Pairs Championship games were called off just as play was due to get underway because of persistent precipitation. The remaining 3 quarter final games will now be played next Saturday at 1pm with the semis on Sunday morning at 9am.

MONDAY mornings Mixed Social Bowls saw the annual hosting of four visiting triples teams from the Walsend Sporties Bowling Club with all being allocated to games against teams nominated from the 42 regular local players in attendance. Monday’s winning triples team were M Whitechurch, K Hutson and A Sergeant. The runners-up was a team from the Walsend Sporties Bowling Club of J Shearer, J Smith and I Shearer. A Mixed Fours Championship match was also played on Monday between G Webster, R Allan, D Dow, and Steve Webster versus V Ley, R Jones, M Simmonds and Russell Simmonds. This was a very interesting match with Russell Simmonds team being the victors. Denis Begley was the Umpire for this match. Thursdays Men’s Muffti Social Bowls produced a winning triples team of S Webster, P Griffith and G Tiley. The team placed as runners-up were S Mall, A Jackson and R Hill. The Lucky Losers on the day were V Ley, D Wright and B Kohut.

Harpic, Tony Kuhn on Stella, and Rob Barwick on Drift. Harpic won on handicap ahead of Dino, Stella, and Drift. The monohull fleet only had 2 starters in the morning race. Scott Witchard in Devocean finished ahead of Stuart Symons and Gary King in Jupiter on both yardstick and handicap, even after a few capsizes. After the heavy sailing in the morning race, no multihulls contested the afternoon’s First Club Championship race due to injuries, previous engagements, and just being worn out.

The Monohull’s Second Club Championship race was contested by more boats. Paul Robertson and Warren Sykes on Slam Dunc sailed a very fast, clean race to win on yardstick ahead of Devocean (even after more capsizes) and Stuart Symons with Zac Jeffries as crew on Jupiter this time. Steve and Caleb Bohlsen on Splash Dance were going well despite a capsize until a spectacular broken mast with the spinnaker up- ended their race. Next Sunday is race 8 of the Spring series starting at 2pm. Jeff Walsh is rostered on Duty.

THIS Sunday, from 1.30pm, you can get wet and dirty and challenge yourself on 20 obstacle courses - all in fancy dress if you wish. The third Port Macquarie Sand Mudder is set to be the biggest, most interesting, highly challenging and of course most fun of its kind, yet. Held along the foreshore of Port Macquarie, from Town Beach to Rocky Point and back, there will be a Tunnel of Love on the flat below Gaol Point, a monstrous Mt Everest on Town Beach, pole dancing in the ocean, water fighting in fish nets, a stair to both Heaven and Hell, and climbing walls and ramps. Spectators at the finishing line will attempt to flour and slime entrants as they fall into the mud pit at the end. Families, workmates, sporting clubs and school children (over 8 years including one adult) are encouraged to enter as teams of four. There will be a School Cup and a fancy dress section with prizes for winners and runners-up. The Greater Bank corporate cup will require competitors to handle a series of mentally challenging building projects. Every competitor will receive a free photo at the finishing line from Nashyspics, to remind them of what a great day they had. The 4.5km course can be walked or run and organisers stress the event is about experiencing something a bit different and having lots of fun – you don’t need to be super fit. Entry is $50 per single competitor ($25 entry fees for those under 18) and for teams of four it is $160 per team. The event will be run by the Tacking Point Lions Club with the assistance of Port Macquarie’s NSW Marine Rescue and Headspace.
