New faces on Chamber
Main focus in 2018 on three key
objectives By SUE PATERICK and BARBARA DYER
FOUR new faces have joined the Port Macquarie Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors with a focus to develop and grow local business by creating opportunities that will benefit the business and professional community throughout the local region. Bron Lowe, Chris Denney, Justin Boydell and Nick DeGroot will join experienced and long-term board members Janette Hyde, Tony Throne, Wayne Jackson, Kellon Beard, Stuart Goodfellow, Karl Maclean, Jane Hilsdon and Michael Mowle. The Executive Board now consists of Michael Mowle as President, Janette Hyde as Vice President, Wayne Jackson as Treasurer and Tony Thorne as Secretary. According to Mr Mowle, the new-look board is a balance of new and experienced members with a diverse range of business experience from medical to finance, retail and everything in between. His own story involved moving to Port Macquarie from Sydney in January, 2000 with his wife, Mandy, and their two daughters. He took up a civil engineer’s position with Syd Hopkins to work on the final stage of Settlement Shores canals. “I have been Managing Director at Hopkins Consultants for over 12 years and am lucky to be part of a great team of Co-Directors and staff at Hopkins,” Mr Mowle said. “Our business is surveying, engineering and town planning so we have been very busy with all the recent development around town right across a broad spectrum of projects.” He said the Chamber’s main priorities in 2018 would be to focus on three key objectives. The first will be representing the region’s business interests such as infrastructure and future growth to the Port Macquarie-Hastings Council and the NSW Government.
The new Port Macquarie Chamber of Commerce Board members Karl McLean, Mark Wilson (Executive Officer), Jane Hillsdon, Bron Lowe, Nick DeGroot, Janette Hyde, Kellon Beard, Justin Boydell, Michael Mowle (President) Stuart Goodfellow and Wayne Jackson are looking forward to a prosperous 2018. (Chris Denny and Tony Thorne were absent.)
Businesses join up for charities REPRESENTATIVES from the Port Macquarie Chamber of Commerce, Holiday Coast Credit Union, Greater Port Macquarie Tourism Association and Hastings Business Women’s Network had the pleasure of handing over two cheques for $2317.50 on December 18 to both Mid Coast LifeLine and Life Education. Local businesses in the greater Port Macquarie region joined together earlier this month to help raise funds for those less fortunate this Christmas. A total of $4635 was raised at the Combined Business Networks Christmas Party through the generosity and support of the local business community. The Christmas party, held at Black Duck Brewery on December 7, saw 135 local business representatives come together to celebrate
another successful year in the beautiful Hastings region. However, the night’s main aim was to raise much-needed funds for local charities. Each year two charities are chosen and this year the money will go to Mid Coast LifeLine and Life Education in local schools with the Healthy Harold visits. The money was raised through ticket sales, a raffle and nine silent auctions – all prizes donated again by our wonderful business community. Other networks who participated were the NSW Business Chamber, Camden Haven Chamber, Wauchope Chamber, Microbusiness Forum, Port Macquarie-Hastings Council, Hastings Business Women’s Network and the Edmund Barton Centre.
The second is to provide networking opportunities for Chamber members, and the third is to be an advocate for all Chamber members in business in the region. Mr Mowle said the Chamber’s role to help businesses grow, provide employment opportunities and contribute to events and activities was of great benefit to the local
community. “The Chamber is made up of locals who want the best outcomes for Port Macquarie,” he said. “And there is a clear need for us to identify the big issues for local business people and then address those issues through networking evenings, breakfasts and luncheons that resonate with the topic of the day.”
The Chamber’s current focus is on connecting with its members on a face-to-face level to ensure next year’s agenda items meet their needs. “The future is bright for Port Macquarie and the Chamber wants to be a major part of that future,” Mr Mowle added. He also acknowledged the Chamber’s Executive Officer, Mark Wilson, and administration staff, Catherine Harris and Letitia Kimmorley, for all their continued support. On behalf of all its members Mr Wilson thanked outgoing members Anthony Wilson, Cathie Linklater, Connie Porter, Alex GlenHolmes and Hadyn Oriti for their generous and long-term services to the Board and the Chamber. “Their roles were totally voluntary and their efforts over many years of service to the Chamber have made a notable difference in the community,” Mr Wilson said. The Chamber’s Board meets once a month and will meet with Council and the local NSW Government member quarterly. Bega’s lead on pilot college
THE Save Kempsey Airport Action Group (SKAAG) has been observing from afar the community campaign in Frogs Hollow (in the Bega Valley) against a proposed devolpment application (DA) for a Pilot Training College. The proposal is for a $9.5million, five-year staged development promising over 200 jobs that needs to be determined by the Southern Joint Regional Planning Panel (SJRPP). Bega Valley Shire Councillors have taken notice of community concerns and have unanimously voted to decline supporting the DA at the upcoming SJRPP meeting. Councillors declined to support for the several reasons, inlcuding noise, privacy, pollution of air and water, environmental impacts and the belief that economic benefit does not outweigh the
amenity impacts. These are exactly the same issues SKAAG has been trying to resolve with the proposed DA at Kempsey Airport. Bega Valley Shire Council have obviously shown good governance through due diligence, conducted proper community consultation and have come to the obvious conclusion that this type of aviation industry is not compatible with their community. It’s not compatible with our community either. It’s time for Kempsey Shire Council to follow Bega Valley Shire Council’s lead and stop the Pilot Training College at Kempsey Airport. Adam Ulrick President Save Kempsey Airport Action Group
Local MP should do more on stadium ‘waste’ IT was pleasing to see Luke Foley’s recent letter in the paper highlighting a better way to spend $2.5 billion instead of wasting it on rebuilding new stadiums in Sydney. I’m sure a lot of our sporting bodies would be pleased to see some of those funds invested in sporting facilities in the Hastings. I wrote to our local member concerning this waste in 2015 when it was first raised but
received no reply. At that stage it was only going to be $1.6b. I have since written three times and the only reply I received stated she receives a lot of correspondence and nothing addressing the issues I raised. It is a pity our representative can’t address the concerns of her constituents like our previous independent members did. John Schwab Port Macquarie

IF your reading this you’ve nursed your way through the inevitable Christmas food coma, eaten most of the leftovers and have waste management back under control after clearing out the inescapable piles of wrapping and packages. The kids sound like stuck records with a constant chorus of ‘I’m bored, I’ve got nothing to do, can you buy me this?’ Some of you would have hit the shops again for the Boxing Day Sales. Whatever the case, I hope you’ve enjoyed the break and family time over Christmas. Me? I’m wallowing in the midst of an extended pyjama party type of scenario, eat, drink, sleep, dance and read. You know - what I want, when I want – because I can. For 10 days. Heaven! Seriously though. This week the focus has changed as most of us eagerly prepare for the NYE celebrations and what 2018 may have in store. Before we get to 2018, I’m going to take some time to reflect on the year that 2017 has been. So much has happened in such a short space of time. I’m struggling to believe it’s already 12 months! Honestly, 2017 feels like it has sped by completely out of control with no chance of slowing down anytime soon! I won’t forget 2017 in a hurry. The circumstances have been what I can best describe as – bi-polar! Although it has been a tough year financially and personally, it’s also been one of my most rewarding years financially and personally. Don’t get me wrong, I haven’t come across wads of cash and have bucket loads of money to burn, I don’t even get paid.

TO a local club. A new carpark is in the process of being built with boom gates for four- or five-star members. When I asked what does that mean, I was told it’s for people that spend a lot of money at the club. I’ve been a member for 20 years, but that isn’t for me, I call that discrimination.
WE would like to congratulate Andrew Mercado on opening up the Bandbox Theatre and having a cinema that Kempsey residents want to use and not have to pay extra money for a new theatre.

I came to realise that, given the chance, not only can I manage my own business, chances are I might go alright. 2017 has been a year of – all or nothing – free-falling from the top of the cliff. I’m not quite out of the woods yet, the light at the end of the tunnel is tangible, I haven’t face planted at the bottom of the cliff and most importantly? I’m still breathing! One hell of a ride! With much love and support from my children and a few close friends, I’ve been encouraged to dig deep, sift through the stuff and find my true self … again. I have let go of everything I don’t need in my life and for the first time in over 34 years, I don’t check in to someone to make plans or a decision. I’ve never had this much freedom and I love it! I’ve decided to go into 2018 with absolutely no expectations of what the year may bring, but I will be welcoming it with an open heart and mind! Thank you to all our readers and advertisers for your ongoing support. A huge thank you to the YLI team: Holly, Sonya, Sacha, Sue, Lizzie, Barb, Pat and Mark. Thanks also to our stockists and our dedicated YLI distributors: Jarrad, Gerry, Sandi and Geoff. YLI will be back with the first edition on January 11, 2018. Cheers and Happy New Year!

New voices to historic site By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC
YEAR nine student Isabella Pearson, from McKillop High School, has been working on a new and exciting project at the Douglas Vale Historic Homestead and Vineyard. The only completely volunteer-run homestead and vineyard in Australia is introducing a new ‘Voice-Over’ project, which will create the ultimate experience for its visitors. “We just thought that when we don’t have anyone on duty, especially around holiday time, we will have the voice-overs set up which will be released on January 20 on our Summer Open Day,” said Kay Morrison, Event’s Coordinator at Douglas Vale Historic Homestead and Vineyard. “It’s also a great training tool for guides who need to learn about the various artifacts of the family members who lived in the homestead. “Each of the voice-overs is spoken by a different person who is a volunteer here at Douglas Vale. The script that I wrote is written in first person and the voice-overs start with a sound effect that’s appropriate to the character. For example, Margaret Wilson was so involved with making the wine and running the property. So before she speaks you can hear the wine being poured into a glass and she goes on to talk about herself, her family members, and the artifacts in the room.” Marian Chisholm and Kay Morrison, two current members of the homestead, took year nine student Isabella under their wing and involved her in the project. Marian sourced infrared motion activated audio players and Kay wrote scripts for each of the seven areas in the Homestead. Douglas Vale members read out the scripts, which were recorded every Saturday morning for a month at The Imaginarium at the Port Macquarie Library. Isabella then added appropriate sound effects
The ‘Voice-Over Project gets underway to these recordings and they were uploaded to the audio players. “Isabella came to us on a school excursion and was interested in completing her Duke of Edinburgh Award and at that stage we had already discussed the voice-overs and because she was computer literate we thought she would be great to work on the Voice-Over Project. “We are very happy with the voice-overs. Isabella is just finalising it all now and is doing a cheat sheet to show people exactly how they operate and where to place them and all the information about them.” Kay couldn’t be happier to have had Isabella working on this project. “She’s done all the technological aspects on the project and she’s done a lot of work on it.
She’s been absolutely wonderful and now she wants to keep working at Douglas Vale as a tour guide which is great,” explained Kay. “We are very excited to have someone so young and so talented to be working with us here at Douglas Vale.” Isabella will be at the Douglas Vale Summer Open Day on January 20, 2018 between 9.30am and 2.30pm. “I started volunteering at the Homestead because I was doing my Duke of Edinburgh Award. You have to do some volunteering to complete that,” explained Isabella. “I found out about the vineyard form a school geography excursion and I thought it would be a nice place to volunteer. “The Imaginarium at the library had a recording

studio which was great for good sound quality. So then I edited it and made sure it sounded good. I also put sounds in the start of each recording so if the recording was in the kitchen, I would add some kitchen noises, like cleaning the dishes, as an introduction to the story. So the person didn’t just start talking straight away when the visitors entered the room.” The voice-overs will not replace the popular tour guides but ensures that the history of the Homestead is still interpreted even when no tour guides are available, or when a guide requires a much needed break from talking. The voiceovers are also a useful training tool and will reduce the workload for new tour guides, which will hopefully encourage more volunteers to take on this role. “It’s a really good experience I’ve had here at Douglas Vale and I’ve learnt a lot about the history which I didn’t know much about at all before,” Isabella said. “I really enjoyed it, in fact I’m now a tour guide myself. I think you get a lot out of volunteering for the community; it’s a great experience.” The official launch of the voice-overs will be on Saturday, January 20, when Douglas Vale holds its Summer Open Day between 9.30am and 2.30pm. During the Summer Open Day there will be all-day entertainment, a Timber Sailing Ship Exhibition, a Children’s Book Workshop, craft and plant stalls, lots of tasty food, and a chance to taste the newly released ‘Villard Blanc’ at the Cellar Door. There will also be a special presentation to Isabella who will launch the voice-over project with a brief explanation of her experience. Leslie Williams (right) with NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian
Leslie Williams announcing funding for the new Kendall Tennis Courts
MP’s vital community roles Williams patron and supporter of many groups
Your Local Independent concludes BARBARA DYER’S two-part interview with State Member for Port Macquarie, Leslie Williams: 1. Other than Member for Port Macquarie, what are some of the other community roles you hold? I’m patron of various local organisations. Rotary: I have been an active member of the Rotary Club of Laurieton for just over 10 years and always try to make time to invest in this amazing organization which supports local, national and international projects. Rural health: I am currently the Parliamentary Secretary for Regional and Rural Health in NSW. Swimming: I’m patron of Lower North Coast Swimming Association. Special Olympics: I’m a strong supporter and advocate for the Mid North Coast Special Olympics. Women in business: I’m a member of the Hastings Business Women’s Network and each year I partner with them to host the International Women’s Day event in Port Macquarie which raises funds to support our local Domestic & Family Violence Centre. Mens’ Shed: I’m a founding member of the Hastings Men’s Shed and still a strong supporter and advocate. Dementia: I’m a founding member of the Dementia Friendly Communities Steering Committee in Port Macquarie and remain a member (although not as active as I would like to be). I have a genuine interest in this area as the Port Macquarie electorate is in the top
three electorates for the highest prevalence of dementia in our state. I am also the convener of the NSW Parliamentary Friends of Dementia. Bravehearts: I’m currently a member of this small but active group in our community that aims to educate, empower and protect our kids from abuse by teaching them about personal safety. 2. What quality do you look for before saying yes to get involved? At the risk of sounding parochial, I would always weigh up what the benefits are for our local community. There are so many wonderful organisations in our community that all play an important role, whether that be support, advocacy, awareness, fundraising etc. As a local member, what I can do is connect local organisations that have similar aims and goals. I strongly believe that when there is collaboration there is most often success. So many local projects have been successfully delivered because local organisations, the community and all levels of government work together. 3. Of the various hats you wear, are any closer to your heart and if so, why? I cannot speak highly enough of the work of Rotary. I am enormously proud to be a Rotarian and to be part of an organization that has impacted the lives of people across the world. It is thanks to the work of Rotary that polio is close to being eradicated. This is such a motivating and inspiring achievement why wouldn’t you want to be a part of an organization that can accomplish something so extraordinary. 4. Having lived in South Australia, the Northern Territory and NSW, have you
stopped moving? Definitely! I don’t think you’ll find a better place to live. I seem to have passed the ‘nomadic’ aspect of my past life onto my children though. They currently both live in Perth, but both have already travelled around a bit, living in Newcastle, Gold Coast and Canada. 5. Do you have a bucket/wish list? Top of the list is to stay happy and healthy and spend as much time as possible with my family and friends. 6. What is your career highlight? I have had a number of careers and each have their highlights. There have been many highlights since becoming the Member for Port Macquarie but they wouldn’t have happened without an army of people who had the same goal and focus. The opening of Lake Cathie Primary School is just one but this is an example of what a community can achieve – certainly in no way my achievement alone! 7. Do you still have the PO at lake Cathie? No. Sold the retail business in 2006 and finished the mail contract in 2011. 8. You volunteer with the Salvos. Do you have religion in your life? My volunteer role with the Salvos is like so many others in the community - collecting money for the Red Shield Appeal. Religious beliefs are very personal but, importantly, we must all recognise that throughout our community there are many and varying religious beliefs and this must be both appreciated and respected. 9. what will you be doing for Christmas? Spending time with family and friends.
29
10. Where and when was your last holiday? No surprise – a trip to Perth to see my children and then to Singapore for a few days for some R&R with my husband Don. 11. Towards the end of your inaugural speech you listed a few goals for Port Macquarie. Have you achieved them all? Certainly many on the list have already been completed or are underway. The Port Macquarie Base Hospital Expansion has been completed. On Monday work will start on the new $17.5 million Mental Health Unit. Replacement of Stingray Creek Bridge has been completed.. Westport Park has been dedicated as a public open space. Pacific Highway duplication/upgrades have been completed in our electorate. Lake Cathie Public School opened in 2015 and 17 new learning areas will be completed by 2020. Planning and design work for the duplication of Ocean Drive from Matthew Flinders Drive to Greenmeadows Drive – now ready for construction. Funding has been provided to assist getting the Youth Hub up and running. Hundreds of millions of dollars has been invested in the Port Macquarie electorate since 2011 across sporting infrastructure, schools, health facilities, roads, social housing, etc. but there is always more work to do. I will continue to keep listening to the community and do whatever I can to get our fair share of funding.

Plenty of smiles when the Hastings Co-op announced grants to nine local community groups HOT off the heels of announcing the $10,000 major prizewinners, Hastings Co-op has delivered good news regarding Community Chest grants to nine local community groups. The nine groups will share in more than $10,000 for projects and equipment that will have a lasting legacy for the whole community. Chief executive officer Allan Gordon said the non-for-profit groups hail from all corners of the Hastings and represent everyone from schools and sporting clubs to disability, volunteer and special interest groups. “What’s great about the Community Chest grants program is the projects are helping to build a brighter future, and more importantly, recognising the tapestry of community groups that make a real difference to the Hastings way of life,” he said. The 2017-18 recipients are: • Byabarra Sports and Tennis Club
• Wauchope Public School P&C • Comboyne Community Preschool • Wauchope Girl Guides • Beechwood Public School P&C • Hastings District Pony Club • FAWNA • Wauchope Cricket Club • Taking Point Surf Life Saving Club The funds will be presented to recipients at a function at Wauchope RSL Club on February 1. Mr Gordon explained that Hastings Co-op IGA Supermarket customers play a pivotal role in the Community Chest program, with funds from specially-marked ‘Community Chest’ products pooled to provide the grants. “Every time you purchase one of these specially-marked products you can feel good about giving back to the community too,” Mr Gordon said.
Vital funds for local surf lifesaving clubs MEMBER for Port Macquarie, Leslie Williams has announced $313,560 in NSW Government funding for two local surf clubs as part of the 2017/18 Surf Club Facility Program. $224,160 funding has been provided for Tacking Point Surf Life Saving Club to finalise the upper level clubhouse redevelopment, while Port Macquarie Surf Life Saving Club has been awarded $89,400 for refurbishment and repairs to the clubhouse. “The aim of this program is to increase the availability, standard and quality of surf lifesaving clubs in NSW for the benefit of their members and the wider community,” Mrs Williams said. “We are now at the start of what will be a very busy time over the summer season for our local surf clubs so it is very timely to be able to
announce these funding grants. “Surf Life Saving NSW does immensely important work - saving lives and providing opportunities for people of all ages to get fit and healthy. “The NSW Government wants to make the work of life savers as easy as possible – we can’t control the water but we can improve facilities like this. “It is a great pleasure to able to advocate on behalf of our community and to see results like this.” Port Macquarie Surf Life Saving Club President, Bill Amy said: “Our club greatly appreciates the assistance the NSW Government is providing to fund these much needed improvements to our Clubhouse.”
Support for people affected by cancer THE holiday season can pose many challenges for people who are affected by cancer. Feelings of loneliness, isolation and sadness are more common than people think – which is even more challenging at a time which is traditionally full of celebrations. As the only organisation to work across every area of every cancer, Cancer Council has a range of information and support services available to assist during this festive season. A great year! TO all of our friends across the Mid North Coast, everyone at Port Macquarie Community College would like to say a huge thank you for all your help this year, and Happy Holidays! We love ‘being there’ for folks who appreciate a helping hand, and likewise we love being part of a community that combines forces to help each other. This year we have seen our brand new Nautilus special assistance high school thrive, thanks to dozens of helpful individuals and organisations wanting to see disadvantaged young people get a fresh start. A group of students graduated in midDecember with their Year 10 Certificates, and they are now making new plans for life which would have been undreamt of last year. Our Community Steering Network, made up of volunteer ‘consumers and carers’ in disability, mental health and other fields, has started to make a real difference in shaping how we plan our programs and serve the wider community. And our Absolutely Everybody Choir of the School of Hard Knocks Port Macquarie Hastings has kept its amazing momentum going, thanks to dedicated choir members, brilliant artistic staff, and wonderful volunteers. Next year we will go on in the same light, and we particularly look forward to unfolding a whole range of new programs at the MakerSpace in 4 Albert Circuit. Young and old alike can find hands-on ways to join in new learning experiences there. And we look forward to beginning our partnership with Raffles Fashion, Design and Commerce College, with its headquarters in Parramatta. If you would like to volunteer for any of our programs, please call the college on 6853 7288 and check out our webpage at www.portace.com.au. Or call in at 77 Hastings River Drive. We’ll be closed from December 21 until January 8, but we look forward to working together again throughout 2018.

Mental Health Unit on the way
NEW Mental Health Unit On The Way: The start of construction on the $17.5 million Mental Health Unit at Port Macquarie was officially celebrated last week, marking an exciting new chapter in mental health services for the local community. I had the pleasure of helping to turn the first sod alongside mental health experts and staff from Port Macquarie Base Hospital. I’m very excited about construction starting for our new facility which will operate as a modern, first-class mental health unit for Port Macquarie. The new unit will enhance the care provided to all mental health patients across the region. This new unit will double the number of mental health beds and expand our hospital’s capacity to care for young and elderly people. The construction contract for the new unit has been awarded to local company A W Edwards. Consultation with consumers, through the District’s Mental Health Consumer Advisory Group, has been a key component of the planning and schematic design phase. Construction of the project is scheduled for completion in mid-2019. Stay Safe On Our Roads: People across NSW should enjoy the holidays with road safety in mind at all times.
STATE MATTERS
With Leslie Williams State Member for Port Macquarie
The holiday period is a wonderful time of the year when many families and friends get together to celebrate the festivities - often travelling further than usual and on unfamiliar roads. Please make sure you stick to the road rules, take your time and drive to conditions. If you’re feeling tired, stop and have a nap, don’t push on. Share the driving if you can. If you’re planning to drink at a get together, don’t get behind the wheel. Have a Plan B such as asking to stay with people for the night or having a designated driver. As part of Operation Safe Arrival, double demerits are in place until Monday, January 1 for all speeding, mobile phone, seatbelt and motorcycle-helmet offences. Police officers will be out in large numbers during the operation enforcing all types of dangerous driving behaviours.

LOCAL councils are encouraged to work with residents and industry stakeholders to identify and prioritise upgrade projects and submit applications for funding under the Federal Coalition Government’s Round Six of the Heavy Vehicle Safety and Productivity Program (HVSPP). Almost $100 million is available under the initiative which has a long history of success in delivering safer, more productive heavy vehicle operations. Funding available under the HVSPP is generous with the Australian Government providing up to $5m to cover 50 per cent of the total cost of each project. Round Six follows the almost $190m already provided by the Federal Coalition Government over the previous two rounds to help fund more than 135 projects. In this round, the application period has been extended to 15 weeks to provide applicants with enough time to prepare proposals. The Guidelines for completing HVSPP applications and more information about the assessment process, critical dates, and key contacts, are available at: http://investment. infrastructure.gov.au/infrastructure_ investment/heavy_vehicle_safety_and_ productivity.aspx
‘Chook’ high on pecking order MAY your chooks turn into emus and kick your dunny down. Okay, you’ve heard that one, but it was the only one I could think of at the moment. And it’s Australian. I suppose they could put in there chicken, or hen, or even rooster. But it wouldn’t have the same impact. Chook, according to my big dictionary, is Australian and New Zealand colloquial referring to a domestic fowl and a chicken . The first entry the big dictionary lists comes from Robbery Under Arms, where it is spelt chuckie. My copy of the book has a picture of Peter Finch on the cover, along with Maureen Swanson, Ronald Lewis, Ursula Finlay Jill Ireland and David McCallum, the bloke who appears in every episode of NCIS. The book was published in 1954. Then the big dictionary lists various entries, including “long-legged chooks”. My Macquarie dictionary says chook is a domestic fowl, Heinemann says it is “informal” for a chicken, Reader’s Digest says it is a domestic fowl, but adds that it was “informal for a girl before bird became more popular”. My copies of Webster and Collins don’t appear to contain any mention of it, or I couldn’t find a mention.

The Oxford Australian National Dictionary says chook is for a domestic fowl and a chicken. It refers the first use to be in 1855 when it quotes W Howlett in Land, Labour and Gold as saying “they tied chuckey up in a handkerchief and rode on”. Obviously it was a very small chook, even though it was described as large and very fat. Maybe it was a big handkerchief. The word was spelt chuckie until early in the 19th century, when the spelling was changed to chook. A bloke who was found in the cow shed at Government House was allegedly looking for the housemaid. He obviously thought a lot of the housemaid, in the cow shed. You can play chicken, although I strongly recommend you don’t. Playing chook doesn’t have that ring about it. The Bulletin in 1916 referred to a rat and a chook erected beside an inscription – and I suspect it has something to do with the coat of

arms. Joh Bjelke-Peterson’s press gatherings were described as feeding the chooks, although Florence’s pumpkin scones were nice. Even politicians have been described as chooks. Cartoonist Larry Pickering in February, 1978, described Gough Whitlam as the chook. Bruce Moore in What’s Their Story said chook was often used in northern England and in Scotland, but was usually spelt as chuck and pronounced to rhyme with either duck or cook. He said it was often spelt chuckie. Was it then a chook? He quotes Lord Augustus as spending his time coaxing his chooks to lay. Don’t ask me how he did it. I can just imagine Lord Augustus running around … Oh, never mind. Some time ago, and possibly still, a young chook was described as a chick but these days the only chooks that qualify are old chooks. I heard once, when a football team was playing badly, that the only way to win would be to play the chooks and raffle the players. But we still have the chook chaser, or the chook raffle, or a face like a chook’s bum, and a few other expressions that perhaps are better not used in this family newspaper. lauriebarber.com;lbword@midcoast.com.au

All the Good stuff in our Community
Santa’s fine but Jesus the focus QUESTION: Why are the Christian churches no longer conducting Christmas Carols on Westport Park? Answer: There are several reasons - increasing costs, technology and the manpower needed to conduct the modern carols. Soaring insurance and security costs have added to the mix. However, it is my personal opinion that the main reason the Carols have stopped came about following the introduction of Santa Claus. Now don’t get me wrong (read my lips) I am not opposed to Santa being part of Christmas. He generates a lot of happiness and goodwill to many children. It was the belief by the local church leaders for many years that the Christian focus on Christmas should be all about the birth of Jesus and God stepping into his world to save mankind. We felt that you cannot mix Santa and Jesus. Naturally, all the focus would be towards Santa and not the birth of Jesus. For more than 20 years the local churches had conducted a hugely successful Christmas Carol event, firstly on the Town Green and then at Westport Park. Each year thousands of people would pack into the park. One year more than 11,000 people attended. Most years the numbers varied from 2000 to 6000, depending on the weather. Support from the community, local businesses, the Council and Mrs Young’s Carnival was tremendous. Thousands of dollars were collected for local charity groups such as Surf Life Saving and the Rural Fire Service. The Christmas Carols always

focused on Jesus’ birth, singing traditional Christmas carols and waving candles. And in latter years the carols concluded with a spectacular fireworks display. On several occasions it was strongly suggested that we have a Santa segment. One year a local media group offered us $10,000 to fly Santa in to the Carols on a helicopter! However we resisted the temptation. Then a couple of years ago the churches introduced Santa into the Christmas Carols. Since then sadly the church’s carols have ceased. We are thankful that Christmas Carols are continuing locally, with the Westport Bowling Club conducting a grand Carols event on Westport Park and many churches holding carols events in their own backyards. As we step into 2018, may I wish you all a very happy and blessed new year. “This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers.” (1 John 3:16)
Judith’s amazing journey Way back when With Pastor, Kerry & Julie
JUDITH Manser ( pictured) was born in England in 1947. After her marriage to Chris Manser in 1969, she and Chris came to Australia for Chris to continue his career in engineering. Judith continued her teaching career. In 1985 Judith and Chris moved to Port Macquarie. On the first Sunday after her arrival, Judith and her two children attended St Thomas’ Anglican Church. She was moved by the warm welcome she received and the loving atmosphere in the church. A week later Canon Sid Welch introduced Judith to Jesus and she found peace with God. Although she had been a ‘churchgoer’ for many years, Judith felt a great change. Sometime later she prayed for her son and he was healed from croup and she also prayed for healing of a lumbar disc and she too was healed. These were the first of many experiences of healing from God through prayer that Judith saw. In 2013 Judith had a fall while travelling in Europe. What seemed like simply sore ribs from this fall persisted and some months later Judith’s ribs got more painful. Back in Australia her pain got worse and she was eventually diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma. Through all the tests and treatment Judith had continued to pray and focus on God’s Word. Judith’s treatment saw her undergo a long process of chemotherapy, eating the right food and exercise, always smothered in prayer. As well as treatment, she attended her church and the local healing rooms to receive prayer and encouragement. After 18 weeks of chemotherapy,
Judith had stem cells collected and then a stem cell transplant. During this time she was lovingly cared for by her husband Chris and supported by many faithful friends. Then, amazingly and unexplainably, Judith received healing for a new regrowth of cancer cells. She has since been on a return holiday to the UK and is continuing to thank God for His amazing touch and to thank all the doctors and carers for their professional and loving treatment of her. Judith has recorded her amazing journey in a book My Journey with God through Multiple Myeloma, Faith, Fact and Miracles. Copies can be purchased from the St. Thomas’ Church office (open 9-12 weekdays) or direct from Judith Manser – birkbypress@gmail.com Judith will also be speaking on her book at an Author’s Talk at the Port Macquarie Library at 10am on March 20th, 2018. The book costs $1495 (plus $4-20 if posted in Australia).

Changing the world through music By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC IN Hearts Wake are saving the planet one show at a time. The metalcore band is touring Australia with their latest album ‘Ark’ which spreads their ecological, humanitarian and urgent environmental message. “We live in such a beautiful part of the world in Byron Bay,” said Ben Nairne, guitarist and songwriter of In Hearts Wake. “When we started touring internationally and seeing parts of the world that aren’t like where we live - big cities with lots of pollution - it opened our eyes up to what was going on out there and I think that’s what kicked off us touching on those important subjects. “People have really taken on board our message with such a positive attitude. A lot more people are getting out there in nature and going on hikes, climbing waterfalls, and just having much more of an appreciation of nature. “We get a lot of people that come up after shows who say listening to our music has inspired them to get out and do that stuff, and it’s really cool to hear.” In June, In Hearts Wake released their triumphant fourth record ‘Ark’ which debuted at 3 on the ARIA Album Chart, making it their third ARIA Top 5 album. In Hearts Wake partnered up with Tangaroa Blue for We Are Waterborne: An In Hearts Wake Initiative to lead a series of cleanups along some of the most polluted waterways around Australia where the band was joined by over 200 fans in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and Byron Bay and together they collected over 17,400 pieces of rubbish. “When bands release an album they will go around the country doing signings at certain CD shops to celebrate the release of their album.
Byron Bay band In Hearts Wake will be in Port Macquarie on January 25 (Photo: Ellie Mitchell) We thought we’d do something different,” explained Ben. “So instead we asked fans to come along and help clean up waterways and beaches with us in each city and they could bring their things along for us to sign and we played a little acoustic song
for them. It was really positive.” The band met during high school where they played at weekend gigs and jammed in between. Eleven years later they have been touring all corners of Australia and throughout Europe and America.
“We’ve actually played in Port Macquarie a few times before. We’ve had some really fun shows there,” Ben said. “We played a couple of times at a hall right on the beach with an awesome view looking right onto the beach. We really look forward to coming back to Port. “This time we will be touring Alice Springs, Darwin, all throughout New South Wales and Victoria, and even across to Western Australia. “We love playing at smaller and regional towns because it’s a lot different to the city. Usually in the larger cities our gigs will be at big venues with big stages with barriers and the crowd is a couple of metres away, whereas at the small shows there’s a lot more intimate vibe and it’s a lot more fun in that sense. “A lot of the smaller towns don’t get shows coming through, so everyone is really appreciative when you do play there.” Although the internet has changed things for the music industry, Ben says that the old fashion way works best. “It’s funny with the internet, because people can listen to you on Spotify or YouTube and other sites, but it’s amazing just how many people come up to us after a show and say they’d never heard of us but are now new fans,” Ben said. “We also get a lot of people who had listened to us on Spotify. It’s given them a new perspective seeing us live. It does make a huge difference; bands have to tour to gain fans. Touring means as much today as it always has.” Don’t miss out on seeing In Hearts Wake live in Port Macquarie on January 25 at the Panther’s Basement from 7pm. Tickets are $28.60 and can be purchased from https://inheartswake.oztix.com.au/ For more information visit http:// inheartswake.com

Kempsey’s four champs Martial Arts School named NSW’s best
By SUE PATERICK USING only their skill, self-discipline and training, three members of Kempsey’s Zen Chi Ryu Martial Arts School won four first places in the Australian Martial Arts Championships in Homebush Bay earlier this month. This outstanding result saw these top athletes became the Australian Champions for 2017. Not only did they walk away with top honours, one student won in two divisions. Twelve students of varying ages went down to Sydney to compete on December 9 and 10. According to the group’s proud Shihan (Head Instructor) Debbie Swanson, her students also placed in many other divisions and the Martial Arts School won the NSW Club of the Year. “I was very proud of the students and very excited,” she said. “It was such an emotional experience and the highlight of the year.” Their prowess will see Alan Bell, Tristan Vogler, James Hartley, Liam Kinny, Shannan Griffiths, Tess Booth and Amalie Iliffe join the Australian Squad for the 2018 World Martial Arts Championships and travel overseas. “I have some students competing in Japan next year, but the majority will go to New Zealand,” Debbie said. To get to this elite level these dedicated students had to place in the Top 10 just to make the State Finals, the Top 10 to compete in the Australian Finals and the Top Five to join the Australian Squad for the World Championships. Eight of the club’s students also attended the Australian Championships in an official capacity as judges and referees. Debbie, a four Dan black-belt, is the Regional Technical Commissioner covering Coffs Harbour, Port Macquarie, Newcastle and Dubbo. So at the regional tournaments it is her role to make sure all the officials make responsible decisions and judge at a high standard. She describes Zen Chi Ryu as a free-style martial arts that covers traditional Japanese

yourself,” she added. The club has been operating in Kempsey for over 30 years with Debbie at the helm for the past decade. She runs five night classes per week at the club’s permanent dojo (or martial arts school) in John Street in Kempsey. The groups range in ages from four to six, seven to 12, 12 to 18 and then adults. They have students of varying abilities and skill levels, but everyone starts with a white belt
and then after years of training they can become black belts. After that they can grade to varying degrees of black belts. The Martial Arts School has 110 members and meets on Monday to Friday nights. It costs $50 a year for membership and $8 per session for adults and high school students, and $7 for children. Charity bowls evening raises $1300
Barefoot winners Jenny and Gary Taylor and charity bowls event organiser Jane Horne present the $1300 donation to Palliative Care Nurse Unit Manager Mary Trotter
A CHARITY bowls evening held at Wauchope Country Club has raised $1300 for the Palliative Care Unit at Wauchope District Memorial Hospital. The bowls evening was organised by Wauchope’s Jane Horne. It is the second year the event has been held, with $1000 raised in 2016 and a total of $2460 raised this year. The proceeds from the event will help support palliative care patients at Wauchope hospital and the Westpac Rescue Helicopter. Ms Horne said the idea for the fundraiser came from a similar event she attended at North Haven. “I thought it was such a great idea; a relaxed and fun way to raise funds for some worthy local charities,” she said. “We had wonderful support from the local community, with the Wauchope Country Club giving us free access to the bowling greens, and a range of local businesses donating food, drinks, prizes and entertainment. “When we asked for donations and took a bucket around, we were given hundreds of dollars from the generous members of the club.” The winners of the competition were team ‘G1, G2 and J’, made up of members Gary and Jenny Taylor and Gary Bowman. Palliative Care Nurse Unit Manager Mary Trotter said the donation was very welcome and would be put to good use to improve patient amenity. Another charity bowls evening is planned for February.
