HAVE a plan for flash flooding in place now. It could save you and your family’s lives. That is the frank warning from State and local SES personnel – the ones who put their lives at risk to save people who aren’t prepared. Above average rainfall and frequent storms this summer have led to saturated catchments across the Mid North Coast, which increase the risk of flash flooding. “People might like to remember back to February 2013, when the big floods that happened along the east coast were preceded by minor flood events,” warns Steven Lawrence, Community Engagement Coordinator for the NSW State Emergency Service (SES). “Since late 2010, more than 70 people have died as a result of flooding in Australia, so it’s really important that people are aware of the rainfall triggers and local flood evacuation plans. “We are appealing for motorists, and members of the public to never enter floodwaters or cross flooded causeways. “It is extremely dangerous for them and for those who have to rescue them. Floodwater can have fast moving undercurrents that can wash people and vehicles away.” Bill Sanders, Unit Controller for Wauchope SES, knows that only too well. “Bain Bridge at Wauchope is renowned for becoming inundated and unpassable at such times. We’ve had to rescue many persons from cars attempting to cross,” said Mr Sanders.

South West Rocks Chamber of Commerce President, Troy de Luca, says the Chamber is looking forward to promoting the beautiful area throughout the year and not just in peak holiday seasons
Never-ending Summer Chamber aims for a 12-month ‘holiday season’
By SUE PATERICK WITH the summer school holidays ending this week, the South West Rocks (SWR) Chamber of Commerce is eager to extend its great season with a plethora of exciting events scheduled for 2016. According to Chamber President, Troy de Luca, this holiday period has been terrific with businesses reporting a busy six weeks. “This season has been really solid,” he said. “It’s been great to see familiar faces from last year and good to see new faces too.” ‘The Rocks’, as it is affectionately known, is a spectacular part of the Macleay Valley Coast, renowned for its beautiful beaches, national parks, great fishing, boating and diving, fabulous dining and shopping, whale watching and great amenities. Horseshoe Bay lies enticingly beyond shady parkland fronting a charismatic shopping centre. The pristine coastline curls around toward Arakoon in the shape of a fishing hook and snares beautiful Trial Bay – one of the few
places on Australia’s East Coast where the sun sets into the sea. In the shadow of Trial Bay Gaol, opened as a public works prison in 1886, families splash in the calm bay and grazing kangaroos mingle with happy campers. As Captain Cook sailed up the coast in 1770, he noticed smoke from Aboriginal fires and named the headland Smoky Cape. Smoky Cape Lighthouse was built in 1891 after 89 ships sunk between 1862 and 1866, taking 243 souls to a watery grave. To capitalise on the area’s natural beauty and extend the tourism season, the SWR Chamber of Commerce is keen to hear from anyone with ideas and initiatives on future events and is holding a business planning day early next month. “But you don’t have to be a business owner or a Chamber member,” Mr de Luca stressed. The first big event scheduled for 2016 is the Stramit NSW Country Surf Life Saving Championships. To make country lifesavings’ biggest event even more enjoyable, it was decided to hold it after peak season on February 6-7.
Last held on the Mid North Coast three years ago, event organisers expect an increase in competitors from Northern NSW. Kempsey Shire Mayor, Liz Campbell, said it was an exciting opportunity for the region to enhance its credentials in the highly competitive ‘sport tourism market.’ She said both Kempsey Shire Council and the community welcomed the economic boost to the local economy, with 1400 participants expected to inject around $3 million into the area. The 25th Nestle Junior Triathlon will be held on Saturday, February 20, and the 27th Coastline Senior Triathlon will be held on Sunday, February 21. There will be an Ocean Swim held in either March or April and the successful Sculptures in the Gaol will be held in August. Volunteers are needed for event management and Chamber members, or to send in your ideas for future events email: contact@swr.org.au. TO help address the loss of biodiversity and threatened species, the NSW Government has set up the Biodiversity Banking and Offsets Scheme or ‘BioBanking’. Run through the Office of Environment and Heritage (OEH), BioBanking provides land owners with an extra income stream in return for their commitment to protect and preserve vegetation and threatened species on their properties. There is no minimum or maximum land size requirements, so land owners can nominate all or part of their property. However, once they commit to the scheme and a BioBanking site is established, it can’t be cleared for perpetuity and it must be managed and maintained. An ‘in perpetuity’ agreement means that it continues even when the land is sold, which could increase land value. Assessors accredited under the BioBanking scheme visit properties to assess the type of credits that may be established on that property for certain vegetation types and threatened species. If the same vegetation or threatened species is being cleared or threatened elsewhere, then the land owner’s credits may be traded as part of the BioBanking Scheme and are worth money. A developer will seek to buy those credits to offset their land clearing. According to an OEH spokesperson, BioBanking credits are placed into a trust fund managed by the Environmental Trust and land owners will receive an annual payment. “The credit amount received each year will depend on all the actions for the site such as weeding, planting and fire control, which are all costed into the future,” she said. Under the scheme it is a land owner’s responsibility to manage these actions, which usually cost more in the first few years. “Once a land owner sells their credits they have a source of income into the future, which ensures management of that land into the future,” the spokesperson said. “The total costs of the management of the land in perpetuity is calculated and once the credits are sold, all the money from the sale of credits is deposited into the trust fund until that total amount is reached. “Any money made from the sale of credits on top of that is profit.” Land owners will be required to pay an upfront cost for the assessor, which depends on the land’s size and the difficulty of access. “In general, though, a land owner would get that cost back as soon as they sell their credits,” the spokesperson added. The BioBanking Trust Fund was legally established under the Threatened Species Conservation (Biodiversity Banking) Regulation 2008.To find out more information on BioBanking or to find a list of assessors in your area contact biobanking@environment.nsw.gov. au or ask for the BioBanking Team on 131 555.

TO say I’m peeved is probably the best understatement so far for 2016! Everywhere I go I hear local business people, members of local networking groups and employees banging on and on about Buy Local, Support Local. I have no issue with the actual concept, what I have an issue with is the double standards. I see these same people supporting large national and multi-national organisations on a daily basis. What infuriates me the most (today) is the incestuous network of organisers/organisations that run our community, events and networking groups spouting off to one and all that they need to Buy Local and Support Local then turn around and do the exact opposite! Please, if you are going to keep going on about Buy Local, Support Local don’t keep entering into exclusive deals with national media companies when you have community minded local media champing at the bit to help you out. It really all boils down to those powers that be feathering their own nests while they pat each other on the back and tell each other how wonderful they are! Get real people! Get in touch with the real heart of our community instead of pandering to your socially elitist clubs and taking the kudos for your amazing efforts when you’re actually responsible for extracting valuable dollars from the community! It is total BS!

We need leaders with fiscal nous WELL 2015, the ‘year of ideas’ from the Labor Party has been and gone and, you guessed it, very few if any new ideas to help this great country moving forward. The only strategy they have to offer is to create a scaremongering campaign against any rise in the GST. They really have no idea, because any increase in the GST, as I am aware, is decided upon by the States and Territories. They have shown Australia during their two terms of Government that they are not financially qualified to manage the economy and yet it would appear that they have no business plan to bring the budget back to balance or to reduce our ever-increasing debt, currently sitting at $31.5 billion in budget deficit and $415 billion in
off the table, then please where and how will you increase revenue, (obviously large companies who pay little or no tax would be a good start), without new or increasing any taxes and where you will cut expenditure, which must occur based on lower than expected income and all without further borrowings. I would also like to see the Government provide this information for all to see and clearly understand how we will work our way back into the black. The people of Australia are forever bailing out Governments who do not understand fiscal and financial management and leave Government with large debt that the people always have to pay, why? Every budget should be based on actual income streams and should
debt, (not all Labor’s doing), which surely must tell everyone that as their leading politicians are virtually the same as those who caused this the majority of this country’s pain in the first place, they have learnt absolutely nothing whilst sitting in Opposition. What a very sorry state of affairs Australia is in when this is the situation for an alternative Government. Every professional incumbent CEO or MD for example, would prepare a business plan for the company and any new business owner would prepare a business plan for the new business. We are certainly not in a sound financial position to withstand any further global financial crisis, which unfortunately beckons. So if the ALP have taken any rise of GST
therefore be straightforward, not these pie in the sky figures that never eventuate. Australia will struggle to weather another GFC storm. The other major focus in the upcoming election will be the refugee crisis. Just look at what is happening in Europe. Germany in particular has received over 600 reported cases of rape and sexual assault by Middle Eastern and African male refugees on NYE alone, and also throughout Europe and Scandinavia, an orchestrated group of attacks has been stated. So this is how they have repaid the hospitality extended to them. We certainly do not want that here. Robert Withers Port Macquarie

Get real on water OVER the past few weeks there have been several articles regarding comments on water usage, especially from a senior member of the Port Macquarie Hasting Council management team. These comments include the way hoses are used, how
you brush your teeth, time spent in the shower and the way washing machines and dishwashers are used. The underlying big issue for PMHC residents is water security. The hard questions PMHC need to urgently answer are: What plans for the expansion of the current water supply have

It’s official, so back us “
We have an industrial paradise of low-cost land, affordable housing, ever-increasing connectivity and a highly skilled workforce
“
By CHRISTINA PARKIN WHEN you think of the mid north coast, most people think of the attractive coastline and sun, surf and sea and the growing tourism industry that supports that attribute. Regional Development Australia – Mid North Coast (RDA) has just launched their 2016 Investment Prospectus entitled ‘Mid North Coast [Connected]’, and a more interesting picture is revealed. And, yes, if at times you think locals are outnumbered by visitors, then you are correct with nearly 4.9 million people visiting the mid north coast each year, spending around $1.3 billion. However, the prospectus also shows a healthy regional economy growing at 4.7% per annum (pa), with many key industries showing an annual growth of between 5-10% pa, and some as high as 20% pa is highlighted. The prospectus reveals that these industries are being backed up by unprecedented investment. More recently, $4 billion has been invested in local infrastructure The upgrade of the Pacific Highway is bringing the region closer to Australia’s industrial centres and is an ideal distribution point for businesses trading between Sydney
Regional Development Australia Mid North Coast Communications Officer, Justyn Walker and CEO, Ms Lorraine Gordon, encourage everyone to promote our region to visitors by giving them a copy of the Mid North Coast [Connected] 2016 Investment Prospectus. and Brisbane. RDA CEO Ms Lorraine Gordon says: “By launching Mid North Coast [Connected], we want to show potential investors another side to this region. “We have an industrial paradise of lowcost land, affordable housing, ever-increasing connectivity and a highly skilled workforce.” Justyn Walker, author and designer of the publication, added that it is hoped that the local community will pick up a copy and pass it on to visitors to illustrate why the mid north coast is becoming an increasingly popular destination for business. “This 2016 investment prospectus contains valuable statistics provided by the Australian
Bureau of Statistics (ABS) and is a valuable resource for local councils, real estate agents, financial institutions, chambers of commerce, international consulates and anyone who needs to apply for federal or state grants, “ said Mr Walker. “There has been significant investment in tertiary education facilities, health care, aged care and social assistance sectors. “We see that there is nearly 21% of value added to the regional economy through the provision of services to the growing demographic shift of aged care and disability services. Floods: Be prepared • From Page 1
“The last rescue incident involved a gentleman wishing to get his newspaper who ignored three roadblocks and personnel positioned at the bridge. “Such actions also risk the lives of rescuers, who may not be trained personnel from the SES,” explained Mr Sanders.” Mr Sanders also has a flood warning for holidaymakers who love camping in isolated areas in the hinterland of the Hastings and Macleay. “It is so easy for campers to become cut off and at risk from the floodwaters. Their location also hinders being able to get help, so they need to be aware,” he says. NSW SES have a comprehensive website at www.floodsafe.com.au and Steve Lawrence recommends that everyone should have a good look before a flood. Be prepared: In the event of a flood warning, all towns and communities across NSW are asked to monitor information updated regularly at: • the SES website www.floodsafe.com.au • the NSW Police Force Facebook site at www. facebook.com/nswpoliceforce • the Bureau of Meteorology website at www. bom.gov.au for weather, wind and marine warnings • local ABC radio broadcasts • www.livetraffic.com for road closures or call 132 701 • local council websites or Facebook sites. Don’t wait till a flood warning is issued – be prepared and be resilient. General Safety: Remember ‘if it’s flooded forget it’. Motorists are advised to avoid any flooded areas or delay travel where possible. When you need assistance: Members of the public seeking emergency assistance during a flood or storm should call the NSW State Emergency Service on 132 500, or visit their website at www.ses.nsw.gov.au

‘Learners Live Longer’ U3A motto is a living story of success

MOVING to Port Macquarie, where there is an active University of the Third Age (U3A) was an easy decision for Rita Spencer last year. With the motto, Learners Live Longer, Port Macquarie Hastings U3A is a communitybased organisation for those over 50 years of age and no longer in full time work, and offers over fifty interest groups a week. “The U3A facility is part of St Agnes Village at Lochinvar Place and is a wonderful thriving community centre for retirees,” said Mrs Spencer. “It has a number of separate rooms, all equipped with data projectors and modern technology and a lovely courtyard with gardens maintained by the horticulture interest group.” Rita is a retired Belfast news anchor, writer, editor, poet, counsellor and educator and first got involved with U3A in Nambucca once she retired from training counsellors at a college in Coffs Harbour. Having written two books, including the ‘Everyone Can Win’ chapter in the renowned Conflict Resolution Handbook, Rita now enjoys facilitating a creative writers group with U3A. Another interest is writing ‘creative nonfiction’, which is narrating non-fiction in a way that makes it more engaging and arresting, but more challenging for the writer to achieve, said Mrs Spencer. “You will find that each U3A is unique as the members run the topic on offer and draw from their own life experience or use the group to facilitate a topic they wish to explore,” explained Mrs Spencer. “It is a lovely atmosphere, easy going and pleasant. Everyone has enormous respect for each life experience that is invested in U3A. “With many baby boomers wanting to retire earlier, U3A has an enormous future in providing a forum for us to keep our minds active and healthy,” added Mrs Spencer. A wide range of interest groups is offered including music, dance, literature, languages, exercise, yoga, art, culture, crafts, photography, history, philosophy, astronomy, crosswords, science, and specifics such as climate or

indigenous issues, mindfulness or news watch. So what is Rita going to be enrolled in this term? “I’m keen to enrol in the philosophy class, the TED talks and perhaps the one on climate change – it’s about time I knew what all that is about,” said Mrs Spencer. There is a $35 annual membership fee, $5 joining fee and then it is only $2 a session,
which usually runs for a couple of hours. With the attractions of the kitchen and gardens, many members make it a whole day visit. You can enrol online at www.pmhu3a.org.au or contact the U3A office from January 27 on 6584 4192 for advice on which interest group you will enrol in to commence classes from Monday February 8 at either Port Macquarie, Wauchope or Laurieton.
WITH statistics showing close to 1 in 5 persons requiring some form of mental health intervention at some time, many would sit back and wonder whether seeking help through the traditional mental health services just seems ‘too hard’. However, we all know how effective a personal trainer can be to help us get physically fit. But did you know that you can have your own personal mental health coach, free of charge, through the NewAccess program across the North Coast? NewAccess coaches are located up and down the North Coast and act like personal trainers for your mental wellbeing, providing support and getting people on the right track for 2016. NewAccess - a beyond blue initiative - is run through the North Coast Primary Heath Network and funded by beyondblue and the Movember Foundation as an early intervention. It is one of three national sites trialling the program since 2014. The New Year is the perfect time to take stock of your wellbeing and NewAccess coaches can help with healthy eating, getting back into a routine and establishing good habits that enhance mental health. NewAccess program manager, Jennifer Melsness, said often people are feeling stressed and low after a holiday break and making changes to life can feel difficult at such a time. “But there are effective, evidence-based tools that our coaches can help with. These are free and available across the North Coast,” Jennifer added. NewAccess trained coaches support people to develop tools in managing life’s challenges including stress and low mood. People over 18 can just ring up and make an appointment and the program can be completed over the phone or face to face (whatever is more convenient). The coaches can arrange to meet you at a number of convenient locations – it might be a local pharmacy, neighbourhood centre or aged care facility – the service is designed to be flexible as possible in its delivery model. “Many people start with a phone consultation – it’s not so confronting and they can get to feel comfortable with the coach,” said Ms Melsness. “They can then access a phone appointment within a couple of days of making first contact, which is an initial assessment to ensure there isn’t a need for urgent medical intervention. “A face-to-face appointment will be a little longer, depending when a coach is next able to visit closer to the person’s location. “It’s often life pressures such as relationship breakups or job loss or the loss of a loved one that can trigger feelings of anxiety or being overwhelmed or loss of motivation.” For more information about NewAccess or to refer to the program, call 1300 137 934 or visit beyondblue.org.au/NewAccessCoach

‘The women we help come from all walks of life’
Funds to fight violence at home
Sandra Sheridan and colleague Dianne, pictured outside the Port Macquarie Court House, are finding the increased funding will allow them to assist women at risk of domestic violence more effectively.
By CHRISTINA PARKIN
A NETWORK of court-based support services for victims of domestic violence has received a welcome 20 per cent increase in State government funding, announced by the manager of the program at Legal Aid NSW, Ms Michelle Jones. The 28 Women’s Domestic Violence Court Advocacy Services (WDVCAS), which provide information, advocacy and referrals to women experiencing domestic violence, including those seeking Apprehended Domestic Violence Orders (AVOs) at 114 courts across NSW, are managed and funded by Legal Aid NSW. “The extra funding will allow Mid-North Coast Women’s Domestic Violence Court Advocacy Service (WDVCAS) to employ more staff to deal with recent increases in demand,” said Ms Jones. “The additional staff will help to provide all women referred to the service with the comprehensive support they need.” The Mid-north Coast WDVCAS assists
women at Port Macquarie, Wauchope, Gloucester, Foster and Taree Local Courts, and in surrounding areas. The service attends every Apprehended Violence Order (AVO) list day at these courts and works in partnership with NSW Police Force and NSW Local Courts staff to ensure that AVO list days run smoothly and efficiently. “In 2015 our service provided 2,769 services to 855 women and their children. These figures include all five courts covered by the service,” said local manager of the WDVCAS attached to the Port Macquarie Court, Ms Sandra Sheridan. “We haven’t had a funding increase since 2009 so these extra funds are much appreciated.” “Since the introduction of the NSW Domestic Violence Strategy from July 2015, we are seeing a large increase in referrals directly from the Police who attend an incident and assess the risk of further threat or harm. “We now often make contact within 24
Feeling Creative?
hours, and the victim is more likely to engage with the wide variety of services available when it is soon after the incident. “Often we just listen, but we are here to support the woman in whatever degree of intervention she feels she needs at this time– often they just want the violence to stop. “Our priority is the safety of the women and children. This is where we can help with tailored AVOs where conditions are adapted to the situation. “The women we help come from all walks of life. Our services provide information about getting an AVO and going to court, advocate on behalf of clients, and connect them with a range of services for their accommodation, counselling and other needs,” explained Ms Sheridan. To seek assistance offered to women affected by domestic violence, you can call the Women’s Domestic Violence Court Advocacy Service on 6584 0053.

Funding for sport
MEMBER for Oxley, Melinda Pavey, has reminded local sporting organisations that applications are now open for the NSW Government’s Local Sports Grants Program. “Sport is the lifeblood of communities across the length and breadth of the mid-north coast and these grants will encourage people of all ages and abilities to get involved,” she said. “The funding aims to increase regular and on-going participation and active recreation by encouraging more people to get moving and become active in their local areas.” The new Local Sport Grant Program will see up to $50,000 in grants distributed to local Oxley sporting clubs and groups. There are four project types within the Program: Sport club development; Community sport events; Sport access; Facility development and capital equipment. The maximum amounts available are: Sport Club Development - $2,000; Community Sport Events - $5,000; Sport Access - $5,000; Facility development and capital equipment - $25,000. Applications close at 5pm on Thursday February 11.
Residents have input
MACLEAY Valley residents can have their say on how they want to see Kempsey Shire Council shape the Valley’s future. Council’s annual Community Satisfaction Survey will be undertaken between January 25 – February 5, with residents to be randomly selected for the telephone survey. The survey of at least 300 people is one tool that Council uses to enhance community input and engagement, and provides a measure of community satisfaction with services provided by Council to its residents which can also be benchmarked against other councils. Participants in the survey can expect to provide feedback on areas such as parks and green spaces, planning and building approvals, library services, roads, bridges and foot paths. For further enquires, please contact the Customer Service Centre on 6566 3200.

Healthy welcome for interns STATE MATTERS
With Leslie Williams State Member for Port Macquarie
NEW Medical Interns for Port Macquarie Base Hospital: Last week I welcomed 10 medical graduates who are commencing their one-year internship at Port Macquarie Base Hospital. There are 983 medical intern places in NSW in 2016, which is a record. It was a privilege to be at Port Macquarie Base Hospital to meet our new interns at the beginning of their journey as doctors. The first day of an internship is a key milestone in the life of every young doctor and I can only imagine how excited they must be. I wish them well during their time here and hope they can enjoy the many riches our local community has to offer. NSW is the only state to offer two-year employment contracts to medical graduates commencing their internship. Over these two years, the junior doctor rotates through a network which includes metropolitan, rural and regional hospitals. This exposes them to a range of clinical scenarios at the outset of their training and supports them to complete their compulsory internship rotations in medicine, surgery and emergency. Having gained general registration, the interns continue their second year of networked training as residents. NSW’s unique Rural Preferential Recruitment Scheme will enable 115 medical graduates to spend the majority of their first two years working in a rural setting. Sports Grants Still Available: Applications are still open for NSW Government grants to help local sports groups across the State. Sport is evolving faster than most people realise and the NSW Government is working with the sector so clubs and associations have the skills and tools to adapt to an exciting future. The funding aims to increase regular and on-going participation and active recreation by encouraging more people to get moving and become active in their local areas. Sport is the lifeblood of communities across the length and breadth of NSW and these grants will encourage people of all ages and abilities to get involved. The new Local Sport Grant Program will see up to $50,000 in grants distributed to local sporting clubs and groups in all 93 NSW electorates. For more information on how to apply and to access the online application system, visit sportandrecreation.nsw.gov.au/clubs/grants or phone 13 13 02.

Local school receives federal funding ANOTHER major infrastructure project is about to get underway in the Hastings. This week I announced Federal funding of $870,000 would be made available towards a $2.17-million capital works project at the Heritage Christian School. This project will not only improve the learning and teaching activities of students and teachers at Heritage Christian School, but also provide a boost to the local economy with jobs during the construction phase of the project. The project includes four new classrooms and one staff room, refurbishment of the existing performing arts building, the refurbishment of two existing staff areas and the creation of two

additional classrooms. The school community is contributing $1,296,158 towards the $2,166,158 project. The new facilities will ensure the school’s
students who come from all parts of the Hastings and Camden Haven will continue to receive a great education. The Government believes in an education system that puts students first. We are committed to helping equip all Australian students with the skills they need to succeed in an increasingly competitive world. Everyone who worked so hard to bring these new facilities to life has shown exactly what can be achieved by a school with strong leadership and a clear vision for the future. Australian Government funding is being provided through the Capital Grants Programme.
years later. Her name was Sasha Cameron. During the English civil war, many years earlier, the Puritan army of English Parliament wore yellow ribbons onto the battlefield. The idea of yellow ribbons was quickly adopted by other countries. Yellow is apparently the official colour of a branch of the US Army. A 1917 American song talks about a yellow ribbon for a lover ‘who is fur, fur away’. This was again released, with slightly different words, about 40 years later, ‘for her soldier who was far, far away’. Arsenal football fans have been known to sing a song ‘we’re the famous Arsenal; and we’re going to Wembley’. The yellow ribbon has been used in Australia and New Zealand for a variety of messages, including suicide prevention. But it has been adopted in many countries. In Singapore the government initiated a campaign to encourage people to give ex-convicts a second chance at rehabilitation. John Wayne starred in a 1949 film called She
Wore a Yellow Ribbon. Shakespeare talked about ribbons of all the colours of the rainbow, but that doesn’t help us much. The word yellow has been added to just about every word imaginable, from dogs to frogs. A couple of years ago I attended the Rotary world conference in Sydney. A Rotary stall, very proper and serious, was selling ribbons indicating each person’s level of achievement in that organisation. An opposition stall nearby was doing a roaring trade selling ribbons, but they were not as serious as the Rotary stall. I bought one that I presented to another person with due ceremony when I returned home. This ribbon said something like: “I’m a nobody; I just like ribbons.” If you’re interested: Invitations are going out now for Doris Day’s 92nd birthday party at the Cypress Inn, Carmel, California, on April 1. The cost is $50. lauriebarber.com; lbword@midcoast.com.au.

Songs, war and lovers all tied in yellow ribbons MANY years ago I was walking along a street in Tulare, California, and every tree in that street bore a yellow ribbon. They weren’t just ribbons from a hit song of the moment; they were real. For many years yellow ribbons had been a symbol of remembrance for men and women who were serving their country far from home – and who might never return alive. Somebody chose those trees in that Tulare street to make a public display of love and a hope that a loved one would return safely. No doubt you have heard some of the songs. I remember ‘tie a yellow ribbon round the ole oak tree’. Some people say the idea of a yellow ribbon started in the Gulf War, but yellow ribbons, or at least ribbons, preceded the Gulf War by many years. Such ribbons were mentioned more than 400 years ago, and various origins have been put forward, but people in England are credited with reviving the practice of yellow ribbons. Opinions differ about how yellow ribbons

started, and historians trying to specialise on the history of the yellow ribbons have just about given up. People have their own ideas on the subject. The Americans have tried to claim the origins of yellow ribbons. Some say it is a folk tale, but others give grudging acceptance to the British. Several examples exist of people tying ribbons around trees until loved ones returned from conflict and even convicts hoping to be accepted back into society. In one case, a British girl thought to be dead but who loved yellow was the catalyst for yellow ribbons and she was found, safe and well, two

Destinations Put Flower Show on the ‘must do’ list
“
It still remains the largest annual flower and garden show in the Southern Hemisphere
CELEBRATING Australia Day is a good time to reflect on all the wonderful destinations we have to visit in Australia and how Newman’s Coaches are well equipped to take you there. One ‘never to be forgotten’ experience would be a nine-day trip combining a breathtakingly beautiful viewing of the Melbourne International Flower Show with a trip to the historic Goldfields towns of Bendigo and Ballarat, commencing Sunday, March 13. One of the many highlights of this trip is the

Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show at the World Heritage Listed Royal Melbourne Exhibition Centre and Carlton Gardens. The show is set to return with an explosion of colour and design. For over 20 years, it still remains the largest annual flower and garden show in the Southern Hemisphere. The show highlights the creativity and passion of Australia’s top floral and landscape designers delivered in stunning displays as well as a strong environmental message for gardening in the Australian climate. Coupled with an extensive array of garden and floral retail products from rare and unusual plants to old favourites, gardening tools to outdoor furniture, water tanks to floral art plus many new and innovative ideas for your garden coupled with food and entertainment for the whole family, it is a ‘must see’ event for anyone’s bucket list. Who can forget the movie ‘Ghost’ – the timeless romantic fantasy about the power of
love. The original movie starred Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore as ‘Sam and Molly’ with Whoopi Goldberg as the fake storefront psychic trying to help the ghost of Sam to communicate with the grieving Molly about her imminent danger. The film won numerous awards worldwide, including an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay by Bruce Joel Rubin, who has also written the adaptation for stage. Well, pack the tissues, call the girlfriends and book a Newman’s coach tour and see Ghost, the Musical. Enjoy the convenience of travelling to Sydney by coach with accommodation at the Menzies, close to the Majestic Theatre for a performance on Thursday night, April 21. Filled with incredibly imaginative illusions and special effects, it will be interesting to see the recreation of the iconic love scene at the potter’s wheel famously performed to the Righteous Brothers’ ‘Unchained Melody’.

Fulfil musical dreams in 2016 HELLOWORLD Laurieton has two sensational Sydney musical tours on offer in 2016. The first is a two-day tour (May 24-25) to see ‘Georgy Girl, The Seekers Musical’ and the second, also a two-day tour (September 21-22) to see ‘My Fair Lady – The Musical’. Georgy Girl is a brand new musical from Richard East, one of the originating producers of Mamma Mia! and Dennis Smith, producer of Dusty - the Original Pop Diva. In its world premiere season, Georgy Girl tells the true story of The Seekers on their rise to international fame, the challenges of success and all the laughs along the way. Experience swinging sixties London and re-live their journey along with the golden soundtrack that the world fell in love with. Featuring all the hit songs of The Seekers including The Carnival Is Over, I’ll Never Find Another You, A World Of Our Own and of course, the Oscar nominated Georgy Girl. This will be a show not to miss. Price includes, return coach travel to/from Sydney, morning tea Day 1, dinner before the show, reserved seating State Theatre from $375 per person twin share, single supplement $99. For the My Fair Lady tour, experience the Joan Sutherland Theatre at the Sydney Opera House for ‘one of the best musicals of the Century’ directed by Julie Andrews. A note from the producers: “In 2016, we are proud to be recreating the 1956 Broadway production of My Fair Lady. “After many conversations the idea was broached about recreating the original production in its entirety. The challenge we had was establishing what remained of ground plans, the costume and set designs and the original creative team and cast. “And so began the slow process of uncovering all the elements that had made the original so great. Trips to Wisconsin, London, New York City and Los Angeles were made and hours were spend trawling over drawings, costume and set designs in the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Arts Centre Melbourne Performing Arts Collection just to name a few. “Cold calls were made and leads were given as the journey unfolded. Along the way the team were fortunate enough to meet with the previous assistants of Cecil Beaton (the original costume designer) and Oliver Smith (the original set designer), who uncovered important materials that made recreating the magic of the 1956 Broadway production a step closer to reality.

Is the world about to end?
STUMP THE PREACHER with Kerry Medway
Terrifying events point to Bible prophecies
THE question: As I watch the news and see terrifying things happening in the world and I hear religious prophecies about Armageddon and the end of the world. Is the world about to end? Is Jesus coming back soon? The answer to this disturbing question is: YES, one day it will. There are very disturbing things happening in the world and many godly leaders are lining up what they are seeing with prophecies in the Bible that the world is drawing to a rapid close. Jesus states very clearly that no-one knows the hour or day when He will return and it is dangerous to try and predict when the world will end. In Matthew chapter 24, Jesus speaks about the destruction of the temple in Jerusalem and also the end of the age. (Read Matthew 24: 1-14). He states that there will be wars, famines and earthquakes and persecutions and an increase of wickedness, but these are not the end. These are but birth pains and warnings for us to be ready
and make sure we have made our peace with God. For none of us know when our lives will be taken or when the world will end. In John 14, Jesus also seeks to encourage his troubled disciples. He says: “Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God, trust also in me.” He wanted His friends to be at peace, even though they were distressed about the events around them. Reading John 14:1-6, Jesus reminds His followers that he is going ahead to prepare a place in heaven for us, which he did through His death and Resurrection. He also reminded us how we can make our peace with God. It is through Jesus and Him alone. So in these troubled and disturbing times, be ready. Make sure you have made your peace with God by inviting Jesus into your life. Do it today and seek out a church where you grow in your new faith.

Former Mayor Rob Drew and his wife Lyn with Pastors Phil Brown and Kerry Medway
Bible points to freedom SOME years back former Mayors’ wife, Lyn Drew was inspired to present each new citizen with a copy of the Bible as they were being welcomed into Port Macquarie and Australia. Lyn approached the Port Macquarie Ministers’ Association with her vision. The local churches readily supported this idea. Special Bibles were purchased from the Bible Society in Australia, Bibles with Australian scenes printed on the cover with a special ‘Welcome to Australia’ sticker on the first page. On Australia Day and at other Citizenship Ceremonies, Mayor Rob Drew presented each new Australian citizen with a copy of this Bible. Most received their gift with great enthusiasm. Some declined, not wishing to swear their allegiance to Australia on the Bible. However, when some of them saw the wonderful Bibles with Australian scenes on the cover, they changed their minds and requested copies of these Bibles too. The local Churches

DID you know suicide is the leading cause of death for Australians aged between 15 and 44. People are often nervous talking about suicide, however when it hits home, it is so much more painful when those conversations have not taken place. Education around suicide awareness and prevention is a key step in helping those at risk. Keeping someone safe is possible only if you have the skills and tools to be able to address such a complex and difficult topic. Wesley Mission Suicide Prevention training is designed to do exactly that – empower individuals from all walks of life with simple yet effective skills and tools to be able to help someone at risk of suicide. Wesley LifeForce training teaches participants to: 1. Recognise the signs that someone might be at risk of suicide 2. Know how to ask directly about suicide
intent 3. Understand what local and national support and resources are available to support a person at risk 4. Have the confidence to implement a suicide intervention strategy 5. Reduce the stigma of mental health issues. The free one day course is being held from 11am to 3pm on Thursday, February 11, at the Kempsey Macleay RSL Club in York Lane, Kempsey. Thanks to the generous donation received from Kempsey-Macleay RSL Club, Wesley LifeForce is able to deliver this training at no cost to the community. To book your place call Wesley LifeForce today on 1800 021 821 but if immediate help is needed please contact Lifeline on 13 11 14.
purchased the Bibles and the Port Macquarie/ Hastings Council presented them. It was a wonderful vision by Lyn Drew and encouraged by her husband, Mayor Rob. One Australia Day, a new citizen was so thrilled to receive a Bible at her Citizenship Ceremony she said later: “It is so good to be in a country where we are free to receive a copy of the Bible. I am so happy to be an Australian.” Let us never forget the wonderful freedom we have in Australia and be wary of those who would seek to take it from us. Jesus said: “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth and the truth will set you free.” (John 8:31-32)

All the Good stuff in our Community
Community shows real heart you “goesA bigoutthank to all those
businesses and people that got behind this event - these people have truly helped to make life a little easier for this family
“
THE Port Macquarie community again showed its caring nature by supporting the recent fundraiser for nine year old cancer sufferer, Caleb Scott. Held at the Port Macquarie Bowling Club, not the expected 100, but over 250 people turned up and helped to raise close to $10,000. Caleb, with his Mum Suzanne Turpie, were able to return from chemotherapy in Sydney and, along with the rest of his family, step-dad Rob, brothers Dylan (13) and Ashton (11) and stepbrother Blake and stepsister Jae, were there to attend and witness the community’s support and care for their plight. Caleb, with minor symptoms of headache, disturbed sleep and morning nausea, was diagnosed with a brain tumour in September last year. Subsequent surgery has left Caleb paralysed down his right side and the combined effects of radiation and chemotherapy has severely affected him. With their health insurance not covering the costs of Caleb’s treatments, Suzanne also had to give up work to become a full-time carer.
Left: Caleb Scott and his step-dad Rob Turpie. Above: Some of the crowd at the fundraiser.
Event organiser, family friend Robyn Conroy, said: “The support of the local Port Macquarie community at the event was completely astounding.
“We want to thank Danielle Maltman, NiKo ‘The Promo Dude’ James and the Port City Bowling Club, organisers of this event. “There have been many major supporters and
donators such as the Mayor of Port Macquarie -Hastings Peter Besseling, Leslie Williams MP, Member for Port Macquarie, The Telstra Shop Port Central, The Party Professionals and The Cordell Family, just to name a few. “But a big thank you goes out to all those businesses and people that got behind this event and attended on the day - these people have truly helped to make life a little easier for this family.” Caleb is also in need of blood transfusions, anyone that can give blood is encouraged to do so and help save many other lives at the same time. In case you missed the event, donations are still being accepted by the Holiday Coast Credit Union, which has set up a trust account for Caleb with the following details - BSB: 721000, Account number: 100179998 in the name of Caleb Scott.

Popular duo at recitals
DAVE Smith and Carol Baker will be the top billing at Port Macquarie’s free Lunchtime Recitals at the Glasshouse this Friday (January 29). Born in London, Dave has been singing and playing guitar since the age of 14. He and his friends started a band and performed at functions and pubs. It was the 1960s and the British rock phenomenon was in full swing. Carol purchased a guitar at the age of 18. She dabbled with it for a few years with folk music and classical guitar before putting it aside. She is a speech pathologist and uses her guitar and music as a tool to work with children with developmental disabilities. The Lunchtime Recitals start 12.30pm.

Come and hear the future IT will be music to Port Macquarie’s ears when some of the best high school music students from across around NSW – including our own local stars – perform at the Glasshouse Theatre on February 10. The HSC students will be performing their show ‘Bravissimo 2016’, which will showcase four ‘Encore’ nominees and additional amazing talent representing schools from Armidale, Tamworth, Wingham, Taree, Kempsey, Camden Haven, Coffs Harbour, Murwillumbah. There will be six students from Port Macquarie schools. Bravissimo Director Leanne Johnson says the two-hour entertainment extravaganza takes its inspiration from Sydney’s annual ‘Encore’ musical concert, which showcases the outstanding musicianship of senior students from all NSW schools with singers, instrumentalists and composers. “It was this little idea that we could have this micro ‘Encore’ concert in a regional area,” said Mrs Johnson. “The school teachers in the area nominate their best Music students and they send them in and then 20 students from these nominations are selected to represent the best from this region. “This is the fifth year we’ve run it, and it’s quite a wide range of high schools that are involved now.” Mrs Johnson said there were difficulties for some students living in remote and regional areas to be part of events such as Bravissimo. “It can be a costly exercise for kids that are coming from further out so this year we are looking to provide a travel subsidy so that it’s fair for everyone,” she said.
“
They are all top notch musicians, wonderful talents. They deserve the recognition. They are pretty astounding.
“Yes, they will come together the day before (the public performance),” says Mrs Johnson. “Most have never met before and they will have to learn one piece, but, they are all top notch musicians, wonderful talents. They deserve the recognition. They are pretty astounding.” ‘Bravissimo’ will take place on February 10 at the Glasshouse Theatre Port Macquarie from 12.15pm. Tickets are $20 for adults and $17 for concession and under 18s. For information and tickets visit www. glasshouse.org.au
Kempsey auditioning now Three Port Macquarie students who will be performing in Bravissmo, from left, Chris Treeves, Sarah Carroll and Tahlia Rakete “Country kids have it tough in so many ways. They are up against it in their courses because Sydney students have a lot of expertise on hand, sometimes better resources, and access to other concerts or workshops. I am really aware of that and that’s another reason why I wanted the concert to start up.” However, living in regional areas does not result in less talent, as has clearly been demonstrated in previous performances. “We have some really top talent in the country areas,” said Mrs Johnson. “Also the Glasshouse is a great venue for it. It’s got that feel of being a really special place to be performing.”

During the concert each student will play a piece from work they studied for their HSC. “It’s a real variety concert in that way – this year from tuba, saxophone, drumkit, voice, piano, bass, flute, to cello and recorder.” There will be arrangements from classical composers, contemporary rock bands and jazz ensembles. Although the students will be playing solo, they will also come together for a spectacular finale. They will combine all their musical talents in one piece. And, no pressure. They have just one rehearsal to get this spot on!

SWR set for invasion By CHRISTINA PARKIN
THE sleepy holiday village of South West Rocks will be bursting at the seams once again when the Stramit NSW Country Surf Championships competitors rock up on the weekend of February 6-7. The Stramit NSW Country Championships is the only event on the surf sport calendar to feature a full range of events including surfboats, as well as all age groups from under-8s through to masters, within a two-day surf carnival. It will be contested at South West Rocks on February 6-7 from 8am to 5pm and this year sees the titles return to the Rocks for the first time since 2010 - 2013. “We have a long, safe beach and there are none of the dramas seen in other locations in the past,” commented Mr Rod McDonagh, South West Rocks Surf Life Saving Club President. Thirty-five surf clubs will be competing,
but the clubs to look out for as the ones to beat include Cudgen and Byron Bay in the north, and Warilla and Barrack’s Point in the South. Clubs from Sydney, Newcastle and the Central Coast have a separate championships event. The 2016 event will also herald in a number of changes to the format of the competition. It is now condensed into a two-day format as well as being held later in the summer to avoid peak-season with at least 1400 competitors and thousands more family, supporters and officials to flock to the town for the duration of the championships. The South West Rocks SLSC, with 65 competitors, including 55 nippers, 4 adults and two boat crews, is one of the three bigger clubs on the mid north coast and are usually in the top ten overall point score. However, they got pipped to take out eleventh placing last year. “Our boat crews have been working fairly hard and will probably have a decent shot at

taking a title,” predicted Mr McDonagh. Individuals to watch are Cooper Schubert, who won the Under 12 medal in the ‘swim and board’ event last year and Mark Notley will be defending his tube rescue title for the 44-49 age bracket. The Askew family will have four children competing this year – Finn U14, Liam U13, Harry U10 and Poppy U8 as well as their father. Finn is looking to win his fourth ironman title, which will be hotly contested. Mr McDonagh invites everyone to come along and enjoy the spectacle – there will even be a grandstand constructed on the beach. “We are really fortunate to have a great bunch of committed volunteers who are vital to making this happen. It’s a lot of work but we’re almost there and looking forward to welcoming everyone to our little patch of paradise,” said Mr McDonagh.
