Dusty and deadly Residents fear it’s a road to disaster

By SUE PATERICK RESIDENTS of Dondingalong, near Kempsey, have had enough! Their once picturesque and peaceful hamlet is now the centre of a dirty fight with the Kempsey Shire Council over the state of Pipers Creek Road, pictured. Locals claim the gravel road is not only the cause of an almost continual blanket of dust, but is also a major safety concern for those who use it. As one local resident said: “Living here has become intolerable, and the flying rocks and dust makes the road dangerous to drive on and impossible to use for simple pleasures like walks, bicycle riding or horse rides.” • Full story Page 3

Pipers Creek Road rage

3

By SUE PATERICK

DONDINGALONG residents living along Pipers Creek Road and surrounding areas are not only fed up with the unbearable level of dust they have to endure, they are also afraid of driving on the dangerous gravel road. Traffic is not only generated from Pipers Creek Road residents, it comes from people living on many other roads that link onto Pipers Creek and most houses that use this road have more than one vehicle. Four school buses navigate the road every day, as well as frequent logging trucks - both private and State Government - and trucks and other vehicles from several horticultural businesses and bee keepers, numerous local traffic and Rural Fire Service vehicles. Before a routine maintenance grade two weeks ago, Pipers Creek Road was rutted and had sharp rocks of varying sizes protruding from the surface. The grading loosened these rocks so driving along it now is as hazardous as skiing down a mountain of marbles. There have been four accidents on the road just in the last four months. At the beginning of September the road was the scene of a serious motorbike accident that has left a young man in a critical condition. According to local residents, it was not the first serious accident on Pipers Creek Road involving motorbikes or cars. They believe that until the road is fixed to an acceptable standard and tarred, it probably won’t be the last. Since the grade, the dirt surface is now as fine as talcum powder and it covers people’s homes and properties in a plume of dust as thick as a dense fog. Residents say the dust gets into their lungs, eyes, noses, rainwater tanks, homes, sheds, dams, vehicles, gardens and food crops. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), clean air is a basic requirement of human health and well-being. The WHO website lists dust as air pollutant that can cause heart disease, strokes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, acute lower respiratory infections, asthma and lung cancer. In 2015 the Australian Government developed a National Clean Air Agreement with a goal to reduce air pollution and improve air quality through cooperative action between industry and government at national, state and local levels. A Department of Environment fact sheet says the air we breathe impacts our health and wellbeing. It is critical, the fact sheet continues, to supporting the amenity of the places we live in, our environment and maintaining our way of life. For local resident Jenny Sproule, the gross deterioration of Pipers Creek Road with its gradual widening and inferior, powdery road fill creates a “perfect storm” of dust each time a vehicle passes her property. “The continuous and enormous dust clouds

The dust problem on Pipers Creek Road is obvious from this photograph while (inset) one Dondingalong resident had this clear message for the Council in the dust-covered outdoor furniture blanket the whole of our house - inside and out, sheds, gardens, machinery and anyone who unfortunately happens to be outside, including our young grandchildren,” she said. “I fear there will be dire health consequences for Pipers Creek Road residents unless Kempsey Shire Council takes immediate action to ameliorate this unacceptable environmental situation.” Fellow Pipers Creek Road resident Rick Furber runs a successful bamboo nursery and the ever-increasing level of dust has caused him to move the bulk of his business to a less-practical part of his property. Unfortunately, he is unable to move his house, vegetable garden, rainwater tanks, machinery shed or fruit orchid. After driving home on Monday, September 18 and struggling to hold his work ute on the slippery gravel road, he became so incensed he had to do something. While he understands that Kempsey Shire Council (KSC) has spent time and money on maintaining Pipers Creek Road over the years, he wants them to know what they are doing just isn’t working and is calling for it to be tarred. He has written to Council outlining his concerns and began a petition that will be left under the black board at the Dondingalong Rural Fire Brigade’s shed on Pipers Creek Road, the South Kempsey Corner Store and on the Tar

Pipers signs. On Tuesday, September 19, Mr Furber stood out on the road and stopped passers-by to get them to sign his petition. In under two hours he received almost 50 signatures. “I was blown away with amount of signatures I received in such a short time,” Mr Furber said. “And that just goes to show Council how busy Pipers Creek Road is and how fed up residents are with its dangerous condition.” One person was the father of the criticallyinjured motorcyclist. After signing the petition, he told other members of his family who lived nearby and they came and signed it too. Some of the comments on the petition so far are: major road that needs to be tarred; hazardous road conditions; dreadful road not safe; a school bus route that should be tarred to prevent accidents; choking dust, shocking road that needs to be fixed; really dusty, slippery and dangerous; sick of buying new tyres so fix road ASAP; road is dreadful and grading is not the answer; lost four tyres so far; too dusty; broken promises to tar the road over the last 30 years; and on and on it goes. Mr Furber is calling for residents and other interested parties to sign his petition and write their own letters to Council. He also wants Council to send water trucks

along Pipers Creek Road two or three times a week in these dry conditions until the road is tarred. “I urge Council to tar Pipers Creek Road as a matter of urgency for the health, well-being and safety of all who live on and use this busy road every day,” he said. “Living here has become intolerable, and the flying rocks and dust makes the road dangerous to drive on and impossible to use for simple pleasures like walks, bicycle riding or horse rides.” According to KSC Director of Infrastructure Services, Robert Scott, Council maintains 1200 kilometres of roads and work is funded through rates and government grants. He said the last traffic count on Pipers Creek Road was in 2012 with a result that stated there were 425 vehicles a day. The count, he added, was limited to five days due to faulty air tubes and he believed that the results may be a little high due to a short survey time, although it could be accurate. “I would be confident to say that traffic levels exceed 200 vehicles a day on the unsealed section,” Mr Scott said. He added that roads with less than 100 vehicles a day had a better life cycle as a gravel road, but a road with over 200 vehicles per day had a longer life cycle as a sealed road. Between 100 and 200 cars a day was the cut-off point for tarring depending on the road’s circumstances. Given these figures, Mr Furber said Pipers Creek Road met Council’s criteria and should be tarred. While nothing has been done to follow up the large traffic count in 2012, Mr Scott has asked for another traffic count to be done on various sections of Pipers Creek Road and will use that information to prepare a proposal for grant funding. This funding would include fixing other unsealed roads in the shire to varying degrees. When asked how she would support the longsuffering residents who live on and regularly traverse Pipers Creek Road, Member for Oxley Melinda Pavey encouraged Council to apply for funding through Fixing Country Roads grants.

The sky won’t fall in if we allow same-sex marriage

WHY are some people so terrified to allow LGTBI people the same-marriage rights as anybody else? The sky has not fallen in in the USA, Ireland or New Zealand and neither will it here. A society which does not discriminate against anyone on the grounds of gender, race, class, ethnicity, sexuality, disability or religion is a happy one. Marginalizing any particular group of people is wrong and causes a great deal of unhappiness. Surely, as a modern tolerant society, we want to evolve towards equality and inclusiveness of all people in our community. I am tired of hearing certain Christian groups bleating on about their ‘persecution’ and their ‘rights’. In the wider debate around this issue,

I have heard very little about the very real persecution and discrimination faced by LGTBI people every day, nor of the number of bashings and murders that have been commonplace for this group of people over the last decades. As for the ‘rights’ of children, let us not forget that the recent Royal Commission Into Child Sexual Abuse has definitively shown that many Christian institutions have abused thousands of children around the world and are, by far, less safe environments for children than gay marriages will ever be. So, is your God one of love? Or judgement? Jesus did not discriminate against anyone and neither should we. Miriam Loftus Wauchope

MEMBER for Port Macquarie Leslie Williams came to the rescue of Port Macquarie Council with a $50,000 state grant to clean up Port Macquarie-Hastings Council’s mess in relation to the buried whale carcass on Nobby’s Beach. In her capacity as secretary for regional and rural health, she has done what needed to be done. She should be commended not chastised for her swift response and solution to what would

be, given decay, a very messy matter created by the PMHC person responsible for the decision to bury the whale just above the high-tide line. The Minister would be within her rights if she was to send PMHC an account for the grant. PMHC stuffed up, they should be made to pay out of rate payer’s huge cash reserves. Steve Bryson Bonny Hills

MP should be commended for swift action

LAST week I represented the Mid North Coast Region in Sydney at the 10th World Chambers Congress at the new International Convention Centre at Darling Harbour. Around 1,000 delegates from Chambers from more than 100 countries gathered to share ideas, opportunities and talk business. The congress was official opened by The Hon. Gladys Berejiklian MP, Premier of New South Wales. The Congress was conducted over three days and I am proud to say that Akubra a local business in Kempsey was a major sponsor of the volunteers, of which I was one. Akubra supplied hats to all the volunteers to wear during the Congress, and plenty of the overseas guests took the opportunity to buy their first Akubra while in Sydney. The days of the Congress were broken up with sessions on a variety of issues facing businesses across the world…they were led by industry experts and Chamber representatives dealing with these specific issues, Business, conflict

You were such a caring young man and stayed with me to make sure I knew who I was, where I was, what day it was, and making sure I was ok. I was lucky I had no broken bones just bruises and a headache. Before I could thank you and get your name, you were gone, I will not forget your kindness and care. I wish you the best in life.

TO Essential Energy who rolled out a truck and fixed a minor safety issue on the line feeding our house within three hours of me ringing them.

Thumbs Up TO the gentleman, Steven, of WIN somewhere in the Sydney area who spent one and a half hours on the telephone recently to help me tune my two tvs to get the new WIN services without the least worry to his time and my ignorance.

Thumbs Up TO the staff of Terry White Chemist, Gordon Street (Plunkett’s). WOW! Such friendly, professional and helpful staff. Thank you! Even the most recent recruit there was so very helpful and professional and introduced me to the pharmacist for even more help. After seeing their promotional flyer, I sought advice on my very annoying head cold/hayfever, which I’ve been suffering for weeks. (Only wish I saw the flyer sooner!) The pharmacist quickly advised the best non-prescription cures. Within four hours I felt better already. Thank you! Amazing.

Thumbs up TO Mathew and Tristan, two wonderful young policemen who helped me find my car last week. I was tired and low blood sugar made retracing my movements difficult. The patience and caring of these young men, who do such a great job with the criminal element, certainly have compassion for those who need a hand. I did not drive with low blood sugar. I thank them for easing my stress and patiently searching till car was found.

and terrorism: rebuilding peace and prosperity; Sustainability; Global mobility; Leadership and the World of tomorrow. The best part about being a volunteer at the event was the opportunity to sit in on some of these sessions and hear how Chambers are tackling real issues. The stand out for me was the talk given by Gunter Pauli, Founder, Zero Emissions Research and Initiatives on Sustainability. If you get the chance have a look at their website, it contains a number of brilliant stories. During the Congress there was also an opportunity for companies to show case their goods and service in the Exhibition Centre. This was a great opportunity to meet and talk to business from across the globe and to tell them about the wonderful place we call home - the Mid North Coast. Squash club celebrates 100 By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC

THE Palm Court Men’s Squash Club is about to celebrate a major milestone. The popular Port Macquarie club has attracted 528 players across 36 years and is currently conducting its 100th competition. “The social aspect is why people keep coming back and playing,” said Roger MacGibbon, club secretary. “It has just been so enjoyable and there’s been a lot of friendships. We have a strong committee and there’s always been someone to step up and help organize things.” It all started all those years ago when three men - Doug Yeff, Garry Hill and Alan Lester - decided to start a Wednesday squash game with the help of Rob Whittaker from the Palm Court Motor Inn. No player has played in all 100 competitions, however Warren (Waza) Turner comes close with 95 competitions under his belt. “Wazza is now in his 70s and he’s still playing,” said Mr MacGibbon. “It’s an incredible achievement. He is also the club historian and has kept meticulous details of the club’s history, with every competition’s players, sponsors, line winners and competition winners recorded.” The club has seen many talented players come through, as well as squash legends Geoff Hunt and Michelle Martin as guests at the Club’s 20th and 30th anniversaries. “We’ve had a couple of really talented juniors such as Ben and Matt Reece who played with the club and have been ranked number one in their age group in the country,” Mr MacGibbon said. “We also have Reuben Rundle who is our number one player at the moment and he’s quite well known as a very highly accomplished player. He is in his mid forties now but in his younger days he played at the top level of

It is a place where blokes get together each Wednesday to let off steam, have a few beers, and play squash. Although, there has been one instance where a woman did play. But Tammy Grainger (wife of club stalwart Glenn) had to change her name to Tommy!

Today younger players are encouraged to get involved in the game. “It’s one hour. You play no matter what the weather is like outside, and you’re guaranteed an hour’s run around on the squash court which is a fantastic workout,” explained Mr MacGibbon. “This is the only squash venue these days in the area. I guess because there’s not as

many younger people playing squash now. But we do encourage them to come along and get involved.” Former players and sponsors are encouraged to come along and join in the 100th celebrations on Friday, December 1 at the Settlers Inn from around 6pm. For SWR it’s a wonderful achievement and one of the most signifanct things the community has done together for locals and visitors

Smiles and joy for new playground By SUE PATERICK JUST the smiling faces and laughter of dozens of children frolicking at the Horseshoe Bay Playground’s official opening was reward enough for all the hard work and dedication of everyone involved is this fantastic project. The playground sits on a grassy verge beside the glistening blue sea and white sands of South West Rocks (SWR), and now that stages one and two have been completed parents and children can enjoy this scenic and educational setting for generations to come. The project was made possible due to a successful partnership between the SWR Sport and Recreation Association, Kempsey Shire Council (KSC) and the wider Macleay Valley community. KSC praised the huge list of organisations, businesses and individuals who have donated goods, services and money towards fundraising efforts. Others like Nestle workers from the Smithtown factory, students and teachers from South West Rocks Public School, Kempsey High School, local day-care centres, and community members have volunteered hundreds of hours of free labour. At the opening on September 22, Kempsey Shire Mayor Liz Campbell said the community had worked hard and collaboratively with Council to raise funds for stage two of the playground project so children of all ages could enjoy themselves. “For SWR it’s a wonderful achievement and one of the most significant things the community has done together for locals and visitors,” she said. “All the businesses, community service organisations, schools, and Councillor Anna Shields have been a dynamic force that has helped drive this project.” Mayor Campbell also acknowledged the great work of Council staff. “Council is committed to upgrading our parks and this park at SWR is now one of the best ones in the shire,” she said. “Small things like parks make people happy, people can come and talk and connect with

each other.” Adding to stage one’s fun equipment are a sixmetre spider climber, a new toddler’s piece, an all-inclusive orbiter, a triple-bay swing set with a joey attachment for parent and baby, monkey bars, a mud kitchen, colourful community poles, extra plants, wood art and landscaping. Painting tall cylindrical poles with stories of the Macleay Valley was the inspired idea of Jane MacDonald, according to her daughter Nell, and together with her other daughter Meg Dickinson these three artistic and community-minded women created a wonderful concept. “The artworks were created by our community’s young people as an expression of

their coastal environment,” Nell said. “Mum secured finding through Kempsey Family Support Service and we want to see these community poles dotted all over the Macleay Valley.” It took a year to see their project finalised and Nell wants to thank her mum and sister for all their hard work and inspiration. She also wants to thank Kempsey Family Support Service, artist Tina Moran for her fabulous artwork and sharing the story and her culture, Leanne Tillbrook from SWR Primary School for coordinating the project there, and the teachers at Trial Bay Pre-School and Kindy Rocks Early Learning Pre-School.

At Macleay, we possess the desired knowledge and expertise to oversee your project with a considerable value. Be it supply, installation, maintenance and repair of commercial or industrial refrigeration and and air conditioners, trust Macleay to be your go to experts.

Also at the playground’s opening Narelle Moulton, President of the Kempsey Family Support Service’s Management Committee, told the Independent that it was a great pleasure partnering with KSC on the community poles project. “It’s exciting to see this community achievement installed,” she said. “Different schools have participated, and it just brings a vibrancy to our local villages and creates a sense of pride in the community working together to do something positive.” For more information email art.in.the. macleay.parks@gmail.com or check out their Facebook page.

Pink ride is growing

Bypass has not reduced jobs

JOIN the sea of pink at this year’s Mid North Coast Pink Ribbon Motorcycle Ride. The annual Ride takes place across Australia seeing hundreds of thousands of people on motorcycles dressed in pink to support Breast Cancer. “The motorbike community love to help out and they raise money for many different charities,” said Leonie Turner from Pink Ribbon Ride Mid North Coast. “The bikie community always make sure they get together for a good cause.” Motorcyclists and drivers will be meeting at the Port Macquarie highway service centre, also known as The Donut at 10.15am on October 14 and will be leaving at 10.30am sharp. The ride will carry on through Wauchope, down Bago Road, off to Laurieton, and continuing onto Bonny Hills Tavern where there will be a barbecue lunch until around 2pm. “There were over 200 bikes in the last ride and we are hoping for just as many, the more the better,” Leonie said. “It’s a great day and people are always so busy so you don’t always get to catch up so it’s a good opportunity to catch up with people you don’t normally see.” Many of the motorcyclists, families, and volunteers involved hold this cause very close to their hearts. “I’ve got a couple of friends who have had breast cancer,” said Leonie. “I watched one of them go through all the stuff ... and I’ve just found out one of my friend’s wife has also been diagnosed with cancer and another lady I ride with is also a cancer survivor too. “So a lot of people have been affected by it and that’s why so many get involved in this day. “I got involved for my friend that I knew had

A NEW, independent study has found that employment in Kempsey hasn’t been negatively impacted since the opening of the Pacific Highway Bypass four years ago. The Kempsey Post Bypass Impacts Monitoring Study was conducted by leading Australian transport specialist Dr Bruno Parolin between May and June 2017 and is based on interviews with 124 businesses located along the former Pacific Highway corridor. Since the opening of the bypass in 2013, the study found a 22 per cent growth in employment, with 249 new jobs created, bringing the total number of jobs to 1,386 and a gross annual revenue increase of $50 million (45 per cent) to $160 million. Factors contributing to the growth include the opening of the Highway Service Centre at South Kempsey which has resulted in the creation of 170-200 jobs made up mostly of local residents, the continuing presence of construction workers, and the opening of the Slim Dusty Centre in 2015. While businesses noted impacts of a general retail downturn, over 90 per cent of businesses said they haven’t been negatively affected by the bypass opening. An overwhelming number of businesses also believe the Service Centre has had a positive effect on Kempsey’s economy. “Since the completion of the bypass, many local businesses have made adjustments and embraced online marketing particularly social media sites like Facebook and Instagram to drive their online sales,” Dr Parolin said. “It was very impressive to see how effectively they have used social media for marketing purposes. It goes to show the resilience of local businesses in the event of an economic shock such as a bypass.” Council’s Manager of Economic Sustainability, Susannah Smith, said Council has identified the importance of online marketing.

Key measures to cut soaring energy prices CANBERRA CONNECTIONS With Dr David Gillespie Federal MP for Lyne

THE price of power continues to remain a pressing issue for many households and businesses throughout the Mid North Coast and right across Australia. As a Coalition Government, we understand the need for affordable and reliable energy and that’s why we’ve introduced important measures which will save families and small business hundreds of dollars on the energy bill. After recalling the energy retailers to Canberra, we were able to secure agreements from them to inform customers that lower costs are available. We’ve also established the government website Energy Made Easy, which allows people to compare their offer for electricity to other better offers that are available and to the market. With other actions like the Snowy Hydro upgrade, which will deliver more affordability and reliability, it will ensure households and businesses won’t have to pay a cent more than they have to for their electricity. In a bid to combat the rising prevalence of severe health and social problems as a result of drug use, the Coalition Government will be trialling a cashless debit card. Trial sites have been selected around the country where we will seek to identify and help people with drug issues that are preventing them from securing or holding down a job. Our government is committed to helping all Australians secure meaningful employment, and for many people drug use is a serious barrier. Should the trials prove successful the government will look to broaden the innovative action to include local areas. Finally, the NBN rollout continues to gather pace with fast broadband set to be delivered to all Australian homes and businesses by 2020. More than six million homes now have access to the National Broadband Network and we are absolutely committed to ensuring every Australian has have access to highspeed internet.

NSW tops with tourist figures AUSSIES Love Holidays At Home: NSW has achieved its highest annual growth in the past five years for domestic visitors, nights and expenditure, according to new figures released by Tourism Research Australia. The state remains the No.1 destination for domestic tourists in the country. In the 12 months to June 2017, NSW welcomed 30.1 million domestic visitors who stayed 97 million nights and spent $17.2 billion in the state’s visitor economy. Regional areas across our state welcomed a record 21.3m visitors who stayed 70.7m nights and spent $10.5b in the last year. As one of the most popular tourism destinations in NSW our local tourism operators can pat themselves on the back for the part they have played in this excellent achievement. Rural and regional NSW continues to be the most visited regional area in Australia – attracting the highest number of domestic visitors who stayed the most nights in any regional area for the year. NSW is unquestionably No.1 thanks to the hard work of the NSW Government over the past six years and we will continue to turbocharge local economies, generate jobs and drive investment in local communities through this booming industry.

STATE MATTERS

With Leslie Williams State Member for Port Macquarie

Dangerous Intersection To Be Upgraded: More than $220,000 will be invested in Port Macquarie as part of the NSW Government’s record $70m safety upgrade to the state’s road network which will help to drive down the road toll Towards Zero. Last year 254 people lost their lives in regional areas. That’s two-thirds of our total road toll for 2016, in one third of our population. Most of these drivers were locals and many of them died close to home. The $220,800 will be provided to Port Macquarie-Hastings Council to adjust phasings of traffic signals to provide for right-turning vehicles from Gordon into Grant Street. The improvement works involve modifications to the existing traffic control signal infrastructure and are expected to be undertaken in the first half of next year.

THE COWPER REPORT With Luke Hartsuyker

Federal Member for Cowper

AUSTRALIA has a long and proud history of agriculture and food production, with a well-deserved global reputation as reliable producers of high-quality, clean, green and safe food. We are in the fortunate position that we produce far more food than we can consume domestically, which means we are able to export the excess to markets around the world and help drive economic growth and jobs locally. However it’s important that we build and retain our competitive edge by promoting Australia’s produce whenever we can. That’s why I recently led an agribusiness delegation to India for Australian Business Week. India, with a population of 1.3 billion people, has a growing middle class who are seeking high-quality goods which Australia is in a great position to supply. This is an opportunity our local farmers and producers need to seize. As part of my visit, I hosted a dinner in Chennai for potential importers from the hotel, restaurant and high-end retail sectors, where Australian lamb and blueberries stole the show. In addition to India, another market that continues to grow for Australian products is China.

What on earth is a delcon? WHEN I began work as a cadet journalist one of the first things drummed into me was not to use words the reader would not understand. I have tried to follow that principle. In recent times a reader—a newspaperman no less – rang to tell me of two words he had read in his metropolitan newspaper. He asked me what the words represented. I was able to tell him that I had never heard of one of the words. He followed that phone call with a letter and the newspaper clipping. The article he had asked about began: “The delcons are happy now as they revel in bucket loads of hot schadenfreude”. Now, would you consider reading a full-page article that started with those words? I had covered one of those words about 20 years ago. That word was schadenfreude. That meant taking delight in the misfortune of others. But delcons? The article appeared shortly after the recent federal election and I think it intended to mean Malcolm should pull his socks up. I would love to know how many of the readers understood delcons. I consulted all the dictionaries in my possession and none included delcon. Admittedly they were old dictionaries. But I was gaining the impression the author of the article had just

my

LAURIE BARBER

found a new word and she was going to use it, no matter what obstacles might be put in her path None of the books in my possession included the word delcon. I was a bit worried about “hot” schadenfreude also. I found an article written before the election asking whether Turnbull would promise anything to win back the delcons. This article went on to tell the reader that “the elephant in 2016 is the ferocious boiling anger,…” But another article wrote about delcons and added “I’ll explain the name a little later”. Then it quoted the article we were concerned about at the beginning. But at least it added “profoundly opposed to Turnbull and his left-leaning ways”, so we were getting somewhere. The article even quoted another as saying delconphobia was rife in parliament. I was beginning to think I was the only person who had never heard of delcons.

plus Liquor

Central

The article did say “we Delcons believe Malcolm Turnbull and his agenda is exactly the opposite of what Australia needs”. It said “Tony Abbott and his agenda is what Australia wants and needs. Hence the moniker Delusional Conservative, Delcon for short.” So there you have it. If you understand what delcon means, tell me one day, but not today. I discovered there are four persons with the surname Delcom in Australia and ten in the United States, but Belgium has 104. That’s assuming there were no births or deaths in recent times. Schadenfreude, often seen with a capital S, is a German word that seems not to have a direct English equivalent. It comes from the German schaden, meaning damage or harm, and freude, meaning joy. My big dictionary says it means “malicious enjoyment of the misfortune of others”. Mrs Byrne’s Dictionary of Unusual, Obscure and Preposterous Words from 1974 defines it on page 67 as a noun which means “taking pleasure in others’ misfortune”. If we did have another word in English that meant the same as schadenfreude, it would be nice to have one easier to spell. lauriebarber.com;lbword@midcoast.com.au

Identifying arsonists SEVENTY additional hidden cameras (pictured) have been set up in state forests around Wauchope, Taree, the Hunter, Coffs and Casino areas this week following a spate of suspicious fires. And ranger patrols are also being ramped up in all state forests to catch the arsonists. Forestry Corporation’s Forest Protection Manager Karel Zejbrlik said many fires had been deliberately lit in north coast state forests and timber plantations in the past week, putting communities and forest visitors in danger. “It is sickening that anyone would recklessly endanger people’s lives by deliberately lighting a fire and we are pulling out all stops to catch the people responsible,” Mr Zejbrlik said. “We now have a total of 120 infra-red equipped cameras hidden in strategic locations throughout north coast state forests and we will have additional rangers out in the forest every day.”

By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC THE New South Wales National Parks and Wildlife Service is celebrating its 50th anniversary but many people don’t know much about the important work they do. So to mark this year’s anniversary they will be holding events all around the state to give the public the opportunity to see just what they have been up to over the past 50 years. “The purpose of the day is basically to allow the community to come along and see what things have been done over 50 years,” said Shaun Kerrigan, a ranger from the Manning-Hastings Area, NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service. The event will take place on October 8 at the Roto House in Port Macquarie from 10am-3pm. There will be photos of historic events, a free lunch and tours of the Roto House and Koala Hospital, and lots of fun activities for the kids to participate in. “It’s also to show some of the work we do, for those who may not know what it is we do,” Mr Kerrigan said. “We want to show the community what we do and also the community partnerships like the volunteer groups and the work they do with national parks, such as fauna, the Koala Hospital, Landcare, the Heritage Society, and all those community groups that work alongside national parks and assist us to get work done.” The day’s focus is all about seeing what the organisation gets up to, and surprisingly, the biggest part of the rangers’ work is actually the least recognised. “One of the biggest things we do is the work we do for fire management,” said Mr Kerrigan. “It’s our most important element but it’s probably our least recognised. “The NSW National Parks is the most professional bushfire-fighting organisation in Australia. “We are deployed all overseas, we are requested interstate, we are all remote fire fighters, very highly skilled and very highly qualified, yet a lot of people don’t know that we actually do that. “We also treat the most amount of land in NSW with fire out of all the other land managing agencies. “We do work very closely with the Royal Fire Brigade, so we do all our own management of fire on our estate and then we work together when there is big wild fire events.” And that’s not all these rangers get up to. “Locally at the moment we are switched from plant burning operations because it’s too dry, so fire management is a big thing in the local area, at the moment that’s dealing with wildfires predominantly,” Mr Kerrigan explained. “We also deal with marine mammal incidents and one that has controversially occurred in Port Macquarie just recently was when a 12-metre whale died on Nobby’s Beach and was buried there. “We respond to the initial entanglement when it’s out at sea and the animal is still alive. Unfortunately for this one it didn’t make it. “We rescue entangled whales and Port Macquarie is one of the three teams in the state.” The rangers also take care of the European and cultural indigenous heritage management and cultural sites such as the Roto House and Innes Ruins and then another branch of programs such as weed and pest management, and visitor facilities such as walking tracks and camping grounds. Understanding the Aboriginal parents’ views

SERVICE providers need to understand Aboriginal attitudes towards parenting to tailor services to community needs and achieve better childcare outcomes, according to research that will be presented this week at Australia’s biggest social policy conference at UNSW Sydney. Aboriginal children are removed from their families more than any other group of children in Australia but little is known about what Aboriginal parents think about child protection issues, says, Dr B.J. Newton, Research Associate at UNSW’s Social Policy Research Centre (SPRC). “It is crucial to learn the perspective of those people that the policy and service delivery is aimed at because they are the most valuable source of knowledge about why they struggle to provide for their children,” says Dr Newton. “We have been applying Western ways to Indigenous communities for 200 years and it hasn’t worked.” Newton’s research found that although Aboriginal parents did not identify large differences between Aboriginal and nonAboriginal parenting, intergenerational trauma and associated factors such as racism and discrimination made it difficult for them to care for their children the way they wanted to. The research explored Aboriginal parents and workers’ views and the experiences of the day-to-day lives of a group of Aboriginal families living in a small NSW country town where Aboriginal people make up about 25 per cent of the population. The paper will be presented at the biennial Australian Social Policy Conference, hosted by the SPRC, which brings together more than 300 leading national and international researchers, practitioners and policy makers with a view to influencing debate and practice. Conference discussion will be organised around several themes, including poverty, welfare and social inequality; communities, families and children; aging; and Indigenous people.

One of the outdoor picnic table settings at the new undercover area at Kempsey’s Ageing In Place facility made possible by the support of two local charities

Charities supply picnic area CLIENTS living independently at Kempsey’s Ageing In Place house now have a wonderful outdoor communal space to enjoy meals and get-togethers thanks to the generosity of two local charities. The Ageing in Place house is home to intellectually-disabled clients of Macleay Options Inc, which provides them with onsite 24-hour assistance. Lodge Loftus Macleay and Masonicare donated the funds to supply two six-seater hardwood outdoor picnic table settings and a BBQ. Fiona Welsh from Macleay Options said the undercover outdoor area will now allow a communal space to enjoy meals and socialisation for the residents, giving greater enjoyment and relaxation opportunity within their home environment. At a special presentation last week the current Master of Lodge Loftus Macleay, Bill

Harbin, said caring for the local community was a part of the Masonic teaching. He added that funds raised by the local brotherhood would have once been passed on anonymously, but these days it was important to become more recognised so the Masons could continue the tradition of communityspirited charitable acts. Mr Harbin also wanted to recognise the tireless efforts of Mr and Mrs Norman Ruediger and the Masons who have sold many a sausage sandwich on Saturdays so the proceeds could be passed on to community members in need. Also in attendance on the day was Robert Drysdale from the District for Masonicare, which matched dollar for dollar the funds raised locally to enable this project to be completed. The Woodies division of Macleay Options manufactured the table seatings and were proud to have their work showcased at the Ageing in Place House.

PEOPLE from non-English-speaking backgrounds moving to the Port MacquarieHastings area face many challenges, one of which is improving their language skills. TAFE NSW Port Macquarie not only provides them with an opportunity to improve their English, it also provides them with links to the community. Leonie Nilson, Head Teacher of Education, Employment and Support, says that attending classes provides them with opportunities for social interaction. “For many of them, the friends they make within the TAFE setting are extremely important and are a lifeline for many of them out of isolation and depression.” Anchalee Promchinda is a Thai woman who says that becoming fluent in English was one of her main aims when she decided to follow her mother to Australia. “I have made some friends in class, and we often practise speaking together when we go out. Otherwise I don’t get to practise often because we speak Thai at home, and where I work, at a Thai restaurant,” says Ms Promchinda. “When I have finished the Certificate III [in Spoken and Written English] I would like to continue studying nursing, which I began in Thailand.” Leonie Nilson says that studying English through TAFE NSW also helps students with their employment skills. “As well as improving their speaking, listening, reading and writing skills, we provide job-seeking skills. The aim is for them to become fully engaged with the community and improve their prospects of employment.” Ms Nilson describes her work as extremely rewarding. “Our students vary widely in nationality, education backgrounds and age, and it is wonderful to see them gaining in confidence and ability as they become more fluent in English,”she said.

The old timber bridge at Turners Flat will be replaced, widened and raised after council received almost $2 million in Federal Government funding

Bridge to be replaced KEMPSEY Shire Council has welcomed almost $2 million in Federal Government funding to replace Turners Flat bridge. Under round three of the Bridges Renewal Program, Council has received $1,995,615 to replace, widen and increase the deck height of the bridge by one metre. The total cost of the project is $4 million. The bridge was closed in 2009 for an extended period of time after two full spans were destroyed by flooding. Council’s Acting Director Operations, Robert Scott, said replacing the old bridge was identified as one of the strategic priority

projects in council’s Delivery Program. “The ageing structure is the largest timber bridge in the shire and the only bridge crossing the Macleay River that isn’t already concrete,” Mr Scott said. “The bridge is used quite often by residents and heavy vehicles associated with quarry and rural activities so by widening the bridge it will allow two lanes of traffic to safely pass through. “We will also be increasing the deck height by one metre which will halve the number of times that the bridge is closed due to flooding.”

Sport helps to create healthy bank account A HEALTHY body equals a healthy mind but it could mean a healthy bank account too. A new study has found Aussies who play sports regularly are 64 per cent more likely to achieve the majority of their financial goals, compared to those who don’t. In fact, unsporty Aussies are more than twice as likely to have no financials goals at all. The research found a clear correlation between our sportiness, setting goals and the way we think about our financial futures. Those who play sport are more than twice as likely to look at strategic investments, such as property, than those who don’t. This is great news for New South Wales residents who were found to have the highest percentage of Aussies who regularly play sport (25 per cent). When it comes to specific sports, the study found: ● Swimming (29 per cent) and Soccer (25 per cent) were the most popular in New South Wales; ● Cyclists and netballers (64 per cent) came out on top as the most financially savvy thinkers; ● Golfers (57 per cent) followed by cricketers (51 per cent) are most likely to seek financial advice; ● Golfers are the savviest savers, with one in three (29 per cent) holding more than $50,000 in savings; ● Australians who play team sports are four times more likely to look to peers for financial

advice than the average Aussie (8 per cent). For example, 32 per cent of AFL players and 33 per cent of basketball players. Coaching psychologist Dr Gordon Spence says the findings provide just another good reason why we should all look to be more active in our lives. “It makes sense to me that active, sportsminded people would also be good at setting and striving for financial goals. Goals are a mental strategy or tool that people use to support all different types of performance. Like using any tool, practice builds skill. Given that sport lends itself so naturally to goal setting, I wouldn’t be surprised at all if these sporty folk were simply transferring their skill with goals from one part of their life (sport) to another (their finances)”. AFL legend Leigh Matthews believes having a goals based mindset is important in sport, but also in managing your life. “The one thing that all successful sports people have in common is that they set worthwhile and measurable goals. The very best then fully accept the challenge of investing the necessary time, effort and perseverance to find the ways and means to achieve these goals. “The other important learning in my life time of playing and coaching in the AFL is that no individual can succeed without help, whether it be from teammates, coaching staff or specialist advisors.”

All the Good stuff in our Community

I assure you God is in total control

Sunday school from the 1880s. William Currey established a Sunday school at Willaim Gard’s Store in East Kempsey

Currey’s early influence IN 1846 William Currey was appointed as Mission/Minister to the fledgling Wesleyan Methodist Church in Port Macquarie. Currey was a Lay Preacher or Catechist in training. He had a passionate fervour to share the love of Jesus Christ to the newly-settled people in the Hastings and Macleay districts. Currey, like the founder of the Methodist movement John Wesley, did not just preach in the newly-constructed Wesleyan Chapel, but travelled the district on horseback seeking to share the love of Jesus to all he met on his travels. The Wesleyan Methodists had constructed a timber Church which was opened in 1837. It is believed that several of the soldiers appointed to the Port Macquarie Penal Settlement were fervent Wesleyan Methodists and sought to grow the Christian faith amongst the convicts and free settlers in the area. William Currey was the first Wesleyan preacher to travel to the newly-formed town of Kempsey on the banks of the Macleay River. He soon befriended the founding settler, Enoch Rudder and his wife Emma. Currey conducted Church services in William Gard’s store on the riverside of East Kempsey. Currey established a Sunday school at Gard’s Store and it became a day school for children’s education. As well as bringing many Kempsey locals to meet Jesus, Currey had a big influence on the pioneer Rudder family. He baptised Enoch and Emma’s children.

Way back when With Pastor, Kerry & Julie

They had 15 children by 1846. Henry had died in 1837 aged 10. I’m not sure if he baptised the other 14 – William Rudder (born 1825), Julius (1826),Augustus (1828), Enoch (1830), Rhoda (1831), Fanny (1832), Llewellyn (1834),Marion (1836), Melanie (1837), Mary (1839), Isabel (1840), Eugene (1841), Flora (1943) and baby Alfred (1845). Enoch Rudder was later influential in establishing the first Wesleyan Methodist Church in Kempsey and later the Anglican Church. Currey left Port Macquarie and Kempsey in 1848 after only two years of dynamic ministry and retired to Maitland. However, his influence continued as it was from Maitland that two ‘firebrands’ of the Christian faith - James Boltwood and Silas Gill - came to the Hastings and Macleay in 1858 and saw a great Wesleyan Methodist revival. every young person is valuable

WOW, thanks for all the messages and phone calls commending me for my column last month on ‘Why I Will Be Voting NO for Same-Sex Marriage’. All comments were good and there were no ‘nasties’ even though many may have disagreed. In July, the Stump The Preacher column answered the question ‘Why are Australian Church Worshippers on the Decline?’ I shared some census statistics and showed that while many Churches are declining, there are some on the rise. In J.I. Packer’s book Knowing God, he suggests the main reason why Christianity is on the decline in the western world is because of “an ignorance of God.” Packer says that “an ignorance of God’s ways and of the practice of communion with Him lies at the root of much of the Church’s weakness today”. Sadly, there are many books on self-help and how to be happy and successful. Yes, even in Christian circles there are more books on these subjects than on the attributes and character of God. So many Christians have a view of God as a ‘great-grandfather in the sky’ or a ‘cosmic Santa Claus’. When God doesn’t answer their prayers the way they want or they face a calamity or two in life, they blame God or walk away from the Church.

STUMP THE PREACHER

With Pastor Kerry Medway

Selwyn Hughes, in his recent studies Every Day With Jesus on the Book of Habakkuk, made a plea for a renewed focus on the nature and character of God and stressed the importance of gaining a fully rounded understanding of God’s attributes and character. Read the Bible, go to the book of Romans (Martin Luther was reading the Preface to Romans when he found faith in Jesus 500 years ago). Two books, apart from Packer’s book that I quoted above, which have given me some encouraging insights into our Great God are The Sovereignty of God by A.W. Pink and God Is Good by Bill Johnson. Both are available from Koorong. Yes, we do live in troubled and confusing times, but let me assure you that GOD IS IN CONTROL AND HE IS WORKING HIS PURPOSES OUT. Trust Him.

Vixens take final in thriller Berecry’s hat-trick sinks Kempsey’s hopes

PORT Macquarie United Vixens U18 girls team won a hard-fought 4-3 contest over Kempsey Saints in the Mid North Coast Football final. Saints had won their two previous clashes this season, but the Vixens still managed to take the premiership, scoring more than 100 goals in the process. United took control from the start with forward Rory Ballard and Tash Berecry tormenting the defense. However, it was the Saints who took the early lead when a through-ball caught out United’s keeper. Some teams may have gone into their shell

after that, but not the Vixens. Driven by midfielders Tayla Davenport and Molly Higgins, United only took five minutes to be back level at 1-1 after a goal from Berecry after some nice passing. They were ahead soon after with Berecry latching onto a ball and giving the keeper no chance. Saints played hard for an equaliser and were rewarded after a scramble in front of the goal to level at 2-2. Both teams held on until half-time, giving the spectators a chance to recover from the end-to-end football. Both sides came out firing in the second half

and United’s left-hand side of Kyra Mcdonald and Lavynia Lowe were giving the Saints a lot of trouble. United’s third goal came after Berecry again found herself in the right place and getting enough on the ball to knock it in. Saints moved players forward, giving United defenders Mackenzie Clarke and Brook Davenport a workout. And the numbers eventually counted as Saints scored from a free kick with nearly the whole team going forward. United’s pace was starting to tell on the Saints girls and the Vixens moved ahead again with Ballard breaking away to score a great goal.

Saints pushed forward again and only some good goalkeeping from Tahlia Clarke kept them at bay. United were unlucky not to put a few more goals away, Berecry hitting the same spot on the crossbar twice and Ballard having a screamer of a shot somehow pushed away by the keeper. The final whistle saw the Vixens 4-3 winners with Tash Berecry voted the Player of the Match for her three goals and nonstop effort. Coach Colin Lowe pointed out at the presentation that it was a team effort and that everyone of the 15 players deserved their medal and had given their all.

Tough day for sailors

THE Port Macquarie Sailing Club held the fourth race of the Spring series on Sunday. Competition started in a light easterly that soon changed into a very gusty north-wester that came and went for the rest of the afternoon. The strong run-out tide provided very flat water as it was running with the strong wind, but made upriver progress hard work. The catamaran division saw fast sailing in the squally breeze with Frank O’Rourke on Dino finishing ahead of Rowan Nosworthy on Return and Rob Barwick on Drift. Dave Winter on Spica withdrew with a broken forestay, and Tony Kuhn on Stella pulled out after constantly being out of control in the strong gusts. Dino also won on handicap with Return and Drift again filling the minor placings. Paul Robertson and Martina Holt in Flembouyant were leading the monohull fleet until pulling out to help the safety boat with the decimation in the fleet. Stuart Symons and Jane Cooper in Jupiter were the only monohulls to finish. Tony Walker in Deep Purple pulled out with a broken main halyard, Cameron

Marshall and Caleb Bohlsen in Lowboys 2 broke off their tiller extension, Terry Howard in Ratz tired out, and Phil Lillehagen and newcomer Taylor McMurtrie in Elmo capsized at the bottom mark, After ending up down past the ferry, they couldn’t continue in the strong breeze, requiring Steve Bohlsen and then Jeff Walsh to assist to sail the boat back. There were red faces aplenty in the safety boats, when Ron Apps in the tinny ran out of fuel down past the ferry after assisting Elmo. Paul Robertson, after retiring from the race to assist, launched the IRB and assisted several boats before finally going to tow the tinny back. Things worsened when the IRB also ran out of fuel on the way back with the tinny. Next Sunday is the first round of the sprint series with racing starting at midday. There will be a BBQ after the first two races, then three more races. Paul Robertson is rostered on duty. PICTURED: Frank O’Rourke on Dino in Sunday’s strong conditions.

IT really is awesome to watch one of sport’s great stories unfold in front of us. For those that are sporting fans, we have our favourite stories. Most will involve high profile teams and people because they are the ones that are televised, written about, now Tweeted. Don Bradman, Phar Lap, Allan Border, Johnny Sattler, Rod Laver, Peter Brock, St George Dragons, Steve Waugh … all greats, but each etched a special moment in history with a standout performance that made people across all sporting denominations stop and applaud. And there are so many more. And not all household names. At every local sporting club there will be a ‘legend’ sitting quietly at the bar on a Saturday afternoon while those around him busy themselves with the day’s events. But occasionally somebody will stop, shake his hand and say: “I saw you that day.” Heroes come in all shapes, sizes and across the ages. They have one thing in common. They unite

many in admiration when they do something truly remarkable. The more under-stated they were. The bigger the underdog they were. The larger the tidal wave of respect. The North Queensland Cowboys are close to that. Close but not quite there. What they have achieved across the closing stages of this NRL season is amazing, but not yet legendary. Win on Sunday and they will forever be mentioned in the same breath as the rarities like Steven Bradbury - teams or people who were given absolutely no chance, but defied the odds. Week after week they were applauded, but given no chance of progressing. Same this weekend. In a two-horse race, after beating premiership hot shots, the Sharks, Eels and Roosters, they are still $3.75 rank outsiders to topple the Storm ($1.28). Every week we heard the plaudits, but then the compelling reasons why they just couldn’t get over the next hurdle. Street-corner experts are slow to learn. According to them, reality, in the guise of the machine-like Storm will bring this fairy-tale to an

abrupt end. Hard to argue with that. The Storm are a machine. There is no room for sentiment in Craig Bellamy’s steely routines. March in. Take no prisoners. Get the job done. And just look at the personnel. Slater, Cronk, Smith - they are brilliant machines. They were clear minor premiers for a reason. They have been consistently the best team all year. So can they crack against the Cowboys? Can they drop their guard for just a moment? No. That won’t happen. They are too good – too Queensland-like. As this column spoke about a couple of weeks ago, there is a real Origin flavour to the Storm, and the Cowboys. They both show unwavering discipline. They turn up for each other. There is no ego in their way. No, Melbourne will play like Melbourne do. But there is a very big chance they will not win. Two reasons. Firstly The Cowboys are no longer the same team that entered this finals series. They are so much better. They are like a team of hardened war veterans going into another campaign. They are not fazed by what is in front of them. The threat of defeat doesn’t worry them. They have played through so much pain and fatigue that those two monsters no 1st October 2017 longer matter. They will give their best, Sunday 1st October, 7.15pm, ANZ Stadium nothing less. But what the critics seem to be overlooking is that they have Storm vs Cowboys morphed into a brilliant side – in attack and defence. Tough and brilliant. Secondly, there is a Sporting God. There is a Lady Luck. Sometimes teams CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR 2017 or individuals are anointed with an aura FOOTY TIPPING COMPETITION that makes them all-conquering. They play hard and well, but the ball bounces WINNER PAUL JONES FROM kindly for them. The 50-50 calls seem to go their way. FURTURES FINE FURNITURE! They are destined to win. • Your Local Independent tips: Cowboys
