This is teamwork By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC

TWELVE local residents will display true team spirit by climbing 6,000 stairs to help raise funds for teammate Milanka Greenwood Personal trainer Kylie Jones established the GI Jones from Port Macquarie a year ago and will now see the team travel to Sydney to participate in the annual Stadium Stomp at the Sydney Cricket Ground. There the ladies will climb over 6,000 stairs all in effort to raise money for the team’s chosen charity, The Brain Foundation. “This is a fundraiser event for teams from all around Australia, at the SCG. You pick a charity to raise funds for and we have picked The Brain Foundation,” said Debra Nelson, from the GI Jones. “There’s twelve of us going down as a team and doing it together. So we all have to do the 6,000 stairs.” This charity is held close to the team’s hearts with one of their own, Milanka Greenwood, suffering from Meniere’s disease. The disease is a debilitating disorder of the inner ear, which causes severe vertigo and has left Milanka deaf in one ear. “She got diagnosed in 2015,” said Debra. “It started off as dizzy spells and the doctors weren’t quite sure what was going on, so she had a lot of brain scans and tests and then she was diagnosed with Meniere’s disease. • Continued Page 9

Turner is ready to listen By BARBARA DYER

NO GAP • • • •

I will actively seek out the people who disagree with me. It’s their point of view I really need to hear to ensure I have all sides of the debate on issues that will impact our city.

MAYORAL hopeful, Councillor Rob Turner, will take an unusual approach to nutting out what the people of Port Macquarie want, should he be voted in to the top job at next month’s byelection. “I will actively seek out the people who disagree with me,” Cr Turner says. “I will listen to them. “It’s their point of view I really need to hear to ensure I have all sides of the debate on issues that will impact our city. “As Mayor, it will be important that I can consider all sides and that means giving everyone appropriate consideration.” Rob Turner grew up in a family where local politics was part of the dinner table debate, led by his dad, John, a former alderman and, like Rob, a pharmacist. Although world travel lured Rob away after graduating as a pharmacist from Sydney University, there was, ultimately, no denying his roots. Nor, it appears, was there any denying the impact of those dinner table discussions and Rob was elected as a councillor in 2012. “I grew up in Port Macquarie and went to school here,” says Rob, 52. “I love that Port Macquarie has retained its character; never lost that essence that brought my family here in 1971, and saw me return here to settle down after my travels. “My wife Norma is from Edinburgh but we both love Port Macquarie.” Having started as a pharmacist with his father at the old King’s chemist in Horton Street, before buying the former Soul Pattinson Pharmacy where Priceline now stands, Cr Turner has found the balance he needs for family, council duties and work, selling up to become a partner with a management role in the Life Pharmacy Group. “Once I start something, I like to focus and get things going,” he says. “For me, it became about family and the community.” It’s that deep sense of belonging, ownership and pride in Port Macquarie, that Cr Turner says will ultimately drive his decisions. “We have a demographic from retirees through to young families coming here for holidays, and everyone in between,” he says. “I just want to keep Port Macquarie a nice place to be. “We don’t want it to become so big that growth overwhelms us. “We need to ensure our water supply has the capacity to cope; that our sewerage system can expand and we need to keep control of the road network. “Many of us remember when the first set of traffic lights went up. That was a big deal for Port Macquarie and no one wants to see us become a congested centre.”

Port Macquarie-Hastings mayoral candidate Rob Turner He says that while the notion of running for mayor was in the back of his mind, it was a ‘very long way back’. “I didn’t expect Peter Besseling to run again after this term, and I thought I would stand at that time,” Cr Turner says. “But Peter’s resignation certainly brought things forward. “I know though that I have the skills, the motivation and certainly the passion for the role of mayor.” He also has a track record as conciliator and, at times, referee. “Communication is key,” he says. “I have learned to listen in roles as diverse as president of the Chamber of Commerce and

chairman of the Port Macquarie Base Hospital Community Board of Advice, to president of the St Joseph’s P&F committee.” Cr Turner is chair of the council’s economic development steering group and holds the economic and cultural development portfolio, roles that play to his twin passions for business and music. As saxophonist with the Black Magic Big Band Cr Turner has played an integral role in seeing the Big Band Blast grow from its debut in 2013 to become the largest free annual festival of its kind. He is also a team player, having challenged himself in all sports from cricket and tennis to basketball and football.

“The important difference in the role I would have as mayor, over my duties as a councillor, is that I would be taking on board all the debate and arguments from councillors on different issues, and seeking consensus,” Cr Turner says. “Instead of being one voice among eight councillors, as Mayor I will be gathering facts, putting council’s position forward and seeing it through to implementation. “I will also have a more civic role as well, being the face and voice of council in the community.” With daughter Rebecca and son Tom still at school in Port Macquarie, and older son Malcolm studying engineering at the University of Newcastle, Rob and Norma have long been familiar local faces out and about. “Now I am ready to take the next step in ensuring Port Macquarie is a place people want to come to and, more importantly, people want to stay.” (Your Local Independent newspaper will continue to offer all mayoral candidates their chance to be profiled before the Port Macquarie-Hastings Council mayoral byelection on July 29.)

LETTER WEEK

Sandy Mackenzie Sandy Mackenzie

OF THE

YOU all know I need to get something off my chest when I elbow my way into some extra space. I try very hard to keep my opinions to a minimum i.e. From the Heart – but sometimes, there are things that just have to be said. This week’s column comes with a guarantee - it is guaranteed to offend someone. First, we need to sort out a bit of housekeeping (again). Yes, I own the newspaper and I am hands on right across the business. I sell advertising which covers the overheads to produce a weekly FREE newspaper for the community and keeps a dozen locals employed, albeit part-time work. I spend hours a day talking to your everyday Joe Blow that comes in to share either their inspirational story or their concerns for the community i.e. Council. I understand there is always room for improvement and our team strives to improve the paper week-in, week-out. We do our best with the limited resources we have…so… In response to a letter from Lyn Easton (June 22, 2017): We literally have enough Thumbs Up/Down that have not been published to fill a book, so it can take a while to go to print once submitted. Ironically it seems your Thumbs and letter have ended up in the same edition – Thumbs Up! Lyn then goes on to address her

Lifestyle ‘devastated’ I SUBMIT this letter on behalf of friends and neighbours of Treeview way, Greenmeadows Drive and Cairncross Place, Port Macquarie, regarding the Development Application (DA) no 251/2016, which was approved on 27th July 2016 for the building of a multi level, multi dwelling block of units being constructed at 114 Greenmeadows Drive. The development is only a metre or two over our rear fence-lines and totally out of character with the area, which comprises mainly of lovely single story and a few double story dwellings. Certainly no blocks of units! This development has devastated families by causing a total invasion of privacy to all homes in the immediate vicinity, where second story windows and balconies look straight onto and into the adjoining properties. We have lost privacy in our family room, meals area, kitchen, laundry and one shower, plus outside entertaining and pool area - the joys of our home! Neighbours have similar complaints. A number of residents attended a Council meeting on the 27th July 2016 where we were given the opportunity to present to the

Chairman of the Panel, our concerns and objections, which were obviously overruled, as the DA was approved at the time. We were not given any other opportunity by the Chairman, to question the builders, after they had answered questions from the Chairman. This may be Council procedure, but we were certainly extremely disappointed at not having a voice of reply. This whole saga has been and is an absolute disgrace and has absolutely shattered families and it would certainly appear that any family living in beautiful Port Macquarie, could be liable for a development of this type to be approved and be constructed just over your side and rear fence-line and take away everything you hold dear as far as your property is concerned. Add to this devaluation of your property as well! I wonder what the outcome would have been if this development were to have been situated immediately behind the properties of members of Council and their neighbours? Robert Withers Port Macquarie

From From theHeart... Heart... the

concerns about the ‘very pointed negative comments directed towards Council and Councillors by you (that would be me) and some of your named and ‘name provided contributors’.’ Thanks Lyn, I’ve been wanting to clear the air for a while now, so here we go. First and foremost – From the Heart is exactly what it says it is – my most humble opinion, from the bottom of my heart. As an opinion piece, it is always going to have its lovers and haters, or the takers or leavers – I understand that, if everybody agreed with me the world would be boring, so I accept the opinions of others, even though I might not agree with them. I also think it is healthy to have open debate about topics of interest to the community, especially Council and how the Councillors are performing. We the ratepayers are the employers of the staff, management and Councillors, aren’t we? As the owner of the local newspaper I believe the media’s role is to keep the Council – staff, management and Councillors accountable should there be a problem. And whether we like it or not, there have been plenty of problems over the last 5 years in the PMHC and dare I say it, not much accountability. It is the community’s democratic right to have their questions answered - truthfully!

Thumbs Down READING the paper on June 8, we were shocked to read in Letter of the Week about mining proposals. Living at Scotts Head, I am shocked at the devastation of the Mid North Coast area and can add to that! Coffs Harbour Council, despite our and many others protests, are still allowing the yearly car rally through pristine forests from the Nambucca area north, way beyond Coffs and inland. Ok, it brings in money for some but what about nature?

TO the police officer who stopped my mate at Kings Creek. My mate asked, “What did I do?” The officer responded, “Had any alcohol today, driver?” “No, officer!” he answered. “What did I see you drinking just now?” the officer asked. “Water!” said my mate, showing him the water bottle in his open lunchbox. As he let my mate go, the officer, like the father of a school boy, admonished him with, “You haven’t eaten your apple!” Later, enjoying a drink, my mate and I had a good laugh at the officer’s dry sense of humour.

THANK you to the worker at Timbertown Pharmacy, Wauchope. She drove to near Newcastle to collect my medication because the deliveries got messed up through no fault of Timbertown Pharmacy. Then she delivered the medication to me at Comboyne after work. Above and beyond the call. Good people still exist!

Thumbs Up TO the wonderful and willing staff at BCF for the way I was treated in their store recently when buying some carpet, which had to be cut to accommodate, and the great after service which I was afforded. Thank you all.

I don’t have a hatred for Council - staff, management or Councillors – I just want what is right for the community as a whole. If there is waste or miss-management of funds then the community needs to be aware of it. Or would the community prefer we put the blinkers on and just pretend nothing is happening? As far as individual Councillors go and negative commentary – that is the reality of becoming a public figure in the community – if you do something wrong or dumb and get caught, it will be in the media. Time to get your big girl pants on or get out if you can’t deal with the heat! These people put their hands up and said: “Look at me, vote me in.” So they can’t turn around now and say: “It’s not fair, I’m being picked on.” You put yourselves in the spotlight! How about just doing the right thing and there won’t be a problem? Often, I think I’m just stating the bleeding obvious and all hell breaks loose! I put myself in that position. So, I have to deal with it. It’s called accountability. I won’t stop asking the questions that I believe the community has the right to know the answer to. In fact, there are still a few that need to be answered before July 29. I’ll leave you with this thought: “The further a society drifts from truth the more it will hate those who speak it.” - George Orwell.

Historical book sale By SUE PATERICK LOOKING for a good read to curl up with beside the fire this winter? Then take a look at the 50 different historical books on sale at the Kempsey Museum in the iconic Glenn Murcutt-designed building in South Kempsey Park. Books like Riverboats of the Macleay, Strength in Adversity, and Memories and Dreams: A Biography of Nurse Mary Kirkpatrick tell stories of the Macleay Valley’s history from its traditional owners to current times. As the museum is run entirely by volunteers, all money raised from the sale of these fascinating historical novels goes towards running costs. Some of the books are written by the museum’s dedicated volunteers like its Vice President Noeline Kyle. Her new book Women’s Business: Midwives on the Mid North Coast of NSW will be launched by Professor Lesley Barclay, Emeritus Professor for the Faculty of Medicine at Sydney University, at 10.30am on Saturday, July 15 at the Slim Dusty Centre at South Kempsey. Apart from interesting books, the museum also provides a quarterly journal and sells merchandise like tea towels, tote bags and pens. Museum President Phil Lee said there have been more than 200 historical journals published to date. The latest one, written by museum volunteer Garry Munday, covers steam ships and features the paddle steamer Angus Irving that was wrecked off the Macleay Valley’s stunning coastline. With the July school holidays upon us why not drop in to the Kempsey Museum to browse through the books titles or be absorbed with

“Manage Council like a Business” says Pinson Recent speculation in the media has called into question the type and nature of experience necessary to be a successful Mayor in the Port Macquarie-Hastings Council. Successful businesswoman Peta Pinson and Mayoral candidate says that while Council responsibilities and obligations to its community are far greater than just financial ones, being able to deliver a comprehensive range of high quality services to the community is reliant upon a strong financial structure created by solid decision making and leadership for better business within the organisation. “I liken the organisational structure of the Council to a business. Any business is accountable for its performance through its decision making. The ratepayers are the investors/shareholders providing the capital (or rates) to run the organisation. The community are the customers of the Council and the Councillors are the Board of Directors making decisions in the best interests of all. The Mayor is the Chairperson reporting the results to the investors/shareholders, (or ratepayers) and the elected Council is accountable for how the capital is used.” The General Manager and his staff are accountable to the Mayor and the Councillors, who would, in a business be a Board of Directors. It’s that thinking and focus that I want to bring to the table as a future Mayor of Port Macquarie-Hastings Council. Our community does not want a ‘Business as Usual’ approach anymore. The ratepayers deserve a better return for their money and the community as a whole deserves better delivery of services. With the community behind me we can aim higher and achieve so much more for the future. I’m committed on making the Port Macquarie-Hastings area an even greater place to live and work by ensuring Council has a can do business attitude which benefits us all”. I welcome your comments about what is important to you and can be emailed at pinson4mayor@gmail.com or contact my office on 6585 2519. Your guide to low-cost travel By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC ENRICH your travel life without the riches. Mike Koch is proving that wanderlust won’t break the bank with his ‘AustraliaFREE2’ book, his second book, including 1000 more activities and camp spots. “Wherever people are going, I’ve been there, and I’ve been there in detail,” said Mike, who is constantly traveling, but currently based in Port Macquarie. “The first book went berserk! Everyone who I talked to who travels around Australia explained how initially they had been given the wrong advice, so I thought I’d document the whole of Australia, for free. “This includes all your zoos, museums, waterfalls, boat trips, town trips etc. You really can have a great holiday without breaking the bank.” Mike has not only lived and breathed travel for years, he has also owned a variety of travel businesses from private charters, tagalong tours, backpacker tours, travelling classroom tours and overseas children’s study and adventure tours. “I used to have a tour company in Cairns for thirteen years,” explained Mike. “Everyone comes from Sydney to Cairns with the most popular tour groups and I always ask them ‘What have you seen?’ and they say ‘I’ve seen Byron, Surfers, Fraser’ and I say ‘Well all the good stuff is in between’. “Tourists go to tour desks and all those people want to do is sell you stuff. So I give you the correct advice, because it’s free. I don’t get anything from it. Now they want book number two.” And, the million-dollar question is ‘Where is the best places to travel in Australia?’ “The Top End is beautiful because you get the wet season which brings in all the beautiful waterfalls and canyons and gorges,” said Mike. “The whole Top End I enjoy especially from Cairns right across to Broome. Then Western Australia has some beautiful beaches, then you go to Tasmania, they have some great beaches and scenery down there too. But then you’ve got the NSW coastline, which is nice as well. “I really like up north, I’m not really a cold person. But then I just did the high country, from Melbourne to Port Macquarie, for six weeks and I went out West, and gee I found some beautiful spots. There were beautiful campsites with the river right beside filled with crystal clear water.” Mike said that less expensive travel doesn’t mean less security and safety. “Cheaper forms of accommodation, like camping - it’s all safe because where people are camping, they’ve got like-minded people right beside you; they are all travellers, and they are a great bunch of people. It’s your retirees and backpackers and travellers, it’s pretty safe. Mike says AustraliaFREE2 is made for the traveller.

Above: Travel author Mike Koch with his new book and (right) a couple of the low-cost, hidden gems in store for travellers. “It’s not made for the person who just goes to Coffs Harbour every year, it’s made for people who are doing road trips around Australia,” he explains. “It’s made for the road trippers and the backpackers, because there’s always something to see and do, and for every age too. “If you go to Darwin, there’s water parks and theme parks that are all for free, but the older people aren’t going to do that. So there are museums and galleries for them. “I photograph everything, so every single input in the book has a photograph. So if I said there was a nice waterfall down the road you’d go ‘yeah okay’, but then you see the pictures and you go ‘wow!’.” But does not spending money mean you

won’t have a good time? Mike says that money can buy a good time. “I still recommend paid tourism if you can,” he says. “I recommend you go to Cairns and do the Skyrail, or go out to the Great Barrier Reef, but what if you can’t afford to do that? This book gives you an alternative so you can actually have a great holiday and not break the bank. “If you are going to go to Sydney, you can climb the Harbour Bridge for about $300 now, or the Harbour cruise - that’s another $200. With a few others things you could spend $900 in one day. “I can go on a three-week trip to Cairns for that, and see the most beautiful spots in between. So you can save a lot of money. So instead of just

one day, I can show you so many beautiful spots that no one knows about.” When speaking with Mike, he had a spider come down onto his shoulder to listen in, but travelling the open road and country towns, he is pretty used to seeing all kinds of animals. “I come across everything, you name it,” laughed Mike. “I’ve seen anything from crocodiles to camels to snakes, donkeys, wild pigs, dingoes and emus are pretty cute - I’ve seen everything and I’ve got photos of them all too.” Mike will be holding a book launch at Settlement City shopping centre out the front of Big W from June 29 - July1 during shopping hours. AustraliaFREE2 is $55 and can be purchased from Mike’s website at http://www.australiafree. com.au along with a link to his app. People who purchase a book at the launch will also receive an Australia wall map valued at $20 and if you had already purchased Book one, bring it in and Mike will give you a $20 trade in on Book 2. And one last tip from Mike - travel light.

Kempsey bins are being recycled

Recycled bin pellets ready to be made into new bins

OLD garbage bins are currently being removed across the Kempsey Shire to be recycled and re-used in the manufacture of new bins. Kempsey Shire Council’s Manager of Technical and Civic Services, Trevor Dickson, said old bins are being taken away for recycling now and over the coming weeks. “After each of your old bins have been emptied for the last time in June, lay it down on its side on the nature strip, ready to be removed,” Mr Dickson said. “Environmental technology company Sulo is supplying new bins under the new waste service contract with Cleanaway, and Council is pleased to be working with Sulo’s recycling

services to eliminate the need for old bins to be sent to landfill.” The supply of new bins to all households is part of the waste services contract changeover and has been identified as more efficient in managing a switch to a three bins service than replacing worn bins ad hoc throughout the contract. The old bins will be put through a grinding process to produce small chips which are washed, dried then melted into long strands and chopped into pellets. The pellets are then used in the manufacture of new high quality bins. The wheel axels are also taken off and separated for recycling.

The 36,000 new bins delivered to Kempsey Shire households over the past few weeks are made of up to 40 per cent recycled materials. All bin tyres are manufactured from 100 per cent recycled car tyres which also helps in reducing the number of car tyres going to landfill. “We want to remind residents that old bins will not be emptied after the end of June so after each old bin has been emptied for the last time in June, it’s time to start filling up your new bins for the start of the new service from 1 July,” Mr Dickson said. To find out when your last June collection is, visit www.kempsey.nsw.gov.au/bincalendar

Banking made better for all By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC

BANKING is now easier for those living with dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. Australia’s first dementia friendly bank is right here in Port Macquarie. St George bank recently welcomed customers in providing assistance to anyone living with dementia or Alzheimer’s. “It’s our first branch and it’s the first branch in Australia across all financial banking brands who are officially accredited by Alzheimer’s Australia, no bank in Australia has done that as of yet,” said Penny Mahon, Media Manager at St George Bank. “Over 40% of our customers are over 50 and a large number of them are in that area and region of Port Macquarie and that’s why we’ve chosen that branch. “And a lot of them have banked with us for a really long time. It’s a place that people are coming to retire to because it’s such a lovely spot.”

Unfortunately, what can be a simple task for some is actually a daunting experience for many. “It’s the simple things like getting to the branch for a start,” said Penny. “It’s really important to teach people other ways of doing their banking if it is difficult for them to get there. Then you’ve also situations such as transferring between accounts and withdrawal limits on their card and if they would like other people to go and do their shopping and having a properly officiated person that can be ID’d to do their banking on their behalf.” The bank’s staff have been working alongside Alzheimer’s Australia for their official accreditation, which means they will then be able to help seniors with things like setting up notifications, direct debits, different account types, withdrawal limits and alternative contacts. “The staff are going through a lot of training now with the Alzheimer’s Australia accredited program,” Penny said. “For example last week they did assimilation, which was really amazing

and they all wore head phones and head sets and they had to actually feel and see what it was actually like to be a person with dementia and what it’s like to do everyday things. “It’s important that staff understand what it’s like to be in their shoes. And then as the training unfolds, they will do more and more things like recognising when it’s time to establish a different power of attorney or someone who can help with their banking. If someone else is doing their banking if they’d like to put withdrawal limits on there, or when it might be time to set up a Will. “Because there are rules and regulations that apply to providing financial advice, that’s why the bank needs to be accredited to do that, so that’s why staff are working with Alzheimer’s Australia.” Regional Manager North Coast NSW from Alzheimer’s Australia, Gary Thomas, says there are more than 413,000 Australians living with dementia and this number is predicted to grow to 536,164 by 2025.

Dementia causes a progressive decline in a person’s functioning and there are many types of dementia including Alzheimer’s disease, and although it can happen to anybody, it is more common after the age of 65. “We live in an ageing population and its only going to continue and elderly customers need to feel safe when banking and they need to be aware of anything that can come up when it comes to banking and how to deal with those things,” said Penny. “And it’s not going to just be in the Port Macquarie branch, it is something that we are looking rolling out nationally and I know that Alzheimer’s Australia would like the other banks to get on board as well. Port Macquarie St George customers can now come in and tell the staff they do have dementia and the staff will talk to them about what they can do to help them and can start putting helpful procedures in place. The Port Macquarie St George Bank branch is at 68 Horton Street.

$10.6m secures unit’s expansion BUDGET Update: The long-awaited expansion to the Mental Health Unit at the Port Macquarie Base Hospital has been secured with $10.6 million allocated in last week’s State Budget. The investment in Port Macquarie’s inpatient mental health unit will enhance services, particularly for older people and young adults. A major upgrade to Lake Cathie Public School, including new classrooms, will meet the increasing student enrolments in one of the fastest growing areas in the Port Macquarie electorate and is welcome news for our community. The upgrade will help provide the great school facilities our community needs and deserves. Thanks to the Liberals and Nationals Government, the NSW economy is the strongest in Australia and this Budget demonstrates that by being fiscally responsible we can deliver vitally important projects across the electorate and across the state. We are seeing unprecedented growth in our local communities and thanks to the Government’s astute decisions, our strong position now gives us options to invest in our communities. More than $100m has been allocated for the completion of the Pacific Highway upgrade from the Oxley Highway to Kundabung. While we have prioritised the completion of

the duplication of the Pacific Highway by 2020, we have not sat on our laurels when it comes to other much needed services and infrastructure. Additional roads funding includes; $2,320,000 – Pavement repair on the Pacific Highway, south of Kew $2,113,000 – Routine maintenance work on State roads including management and inspection services and minor pavement repairs $1,115,000 – Specific maintenance and minor improvement work on State roads including patching and resurfacing, road widening and realignment, intersection upgrades and passing lanes The popular community-backed projects in the Camden Haven – Schools to Schools will receive $200,000 and Beach to Beach have secured $500,000 funding through this budget including an elevated boardwalk at Dunbogan as part of the $62mn Cycling and Walking Program.

ANOTHER $6 commmillion was committed by the Coalition Government last week to help us reach our goal of planting 20 million trees by 2020. It’s a significant goal but one we’re on track to achieving. As of April, 2017, 166 projects have been approved with 13.4 million trees either planted or to be planted in the near future. We need your help to plant the rest. The third round of the grant is open for applications right now, and you can apply to be part of this nationwide program. The 20 Million Trees Program is something which I’m passionate about, because it forms an important part of the National Landcare Program. Some of the 5400 Landcare groups and 100,000 volunteers across the country have already got behind this program and done their bit to put back threatened bushland and support threatened species. But it’s not just planting trees wherever you feel like. To ensure the highest survival rates of the trees planted, a great deal of work goes into to selecting the right locations and the right native trees and vegetation for the area. The applications for 20 Million Trees Program Round 3 close on August 15. For more information visit www.nrm.gov.au/20million-trees.

Scrabble’s the last word in board games

MANY years ago a woman sent me some booklets on Scrabble and she thought I might find a place for the word ‘scrabble’ in a column one day. I put the booklets on my desk and I put a piece of paper on the booklets. Last week I removed the paper and the booklets were still there. If you haven’t been to my house, and in particular my study, you wouldn’t understand. The booklets were dated 1995 and they came from Audrey Jackman. She said in an accompanying letter that Robert somebody was playing in the Asian championships in Bangkok, but Scrabble championships were not very lucrative except for the world championships. I happened to have had The Scrabble Book, whose author was Derryn Hinch. In answer to your question, I don’t know, but the clues led to the politician before he became a politician. Scrabble became a popular board game around 1950, but the word goes back to at least 1547, when it meant a bad writer. Scrabble in those days meant scribbling on gates. These days some people might call it graffiti. But according to my big dictionary, it meant to scrawl upon something, to scratch about hurriedly with the claws or paws, to scramble on

my

LAURIE BARBER

hands and feet and to write in a scrawling style. Samuel Johnson in his 1755 dictionary said scrabble (with a lower case ‘s’) meant to paw with hands (paw meant the foot of an animal, but this isn’t about paws). William Safire in his book On Language comments on the Scrabble people trying to stop random use of Scrabble but Arthur J Morgan of New York said in the same publication, “I’d spit in their eye if they tried to stop me from using the word in its pristine sense”. He quoted Samuel from the Bible. In 1625 Miss AE Baker made a comment about boys (not girls) making words with chalk on a wall or gate. They still do. But then she said they wrote in an uncouth and unsightly manner. In his book, Derryn Hinch comments that Sophia Loren consoled Richard Burton during

one of his estrangements from Elizabeth Taylor (“I know, let’s play Scrabble” – I find that difficult to believe) and that the Queen Mother was a novice at it. Scrabble was invented by an out-of-work architect, Alfred Butts, during the Depression, and became the most successful word game in history, according to Derryn Hinch. Mickey Spillane in his novel The Erection Set tells of the word TRAP as a warning on page 269. The Queen Mother bought a deluxe set in New York in 1954. I was looking through the booklets sent to me by Audrey Jackman. Enid Blyton was described as “tiny blonde” and sauciness was described as “causes sin”. I don’t know what they had do with Scrabble, but it’s in the book The booklets advertised the Norfolk Island Scrabble Festival and commented on discourtesy among some players. They even had a fighting fund. There was an item about a man who was at sea and his wife played Scrabble with her next door neighbour. But then they talked about a word I’m not allowed to mention But it led me to wonder what they get up to at Scrabble tournaments, lauriebarber.com;lbword@midcoast.com.au

Busy 12 months for PMH Council

Some real teamwork • From Page 1 “It’s incurable and there’s very limited treatment and there’s not a lot of knowledge about it in general. So that’s what The Brain Foundation do, they raise money for research for different brain disorders, Meniere’s disease being one of them.” Meniere’s disease may develop slowly or suddenly with a vertigo attack. These attacks can last from 10 minutes to several hours, making it extremely hard for anyone living with it. “If we are all training together it’s very hard for Milanka to hear conversations because she can’t differentiate noises, and there’s times when she is completely incapacitated because of her severe vertigo. “So while she tries to maintain a normal life, every day there is the possibility she could have an attack, leaving her unable to work or train for weeks. There’s no warning when these attacks come, they just happen out of the

blue and she will just fall to the ground.” The team has been training hard and is calling on donations to help Milanka. “We are hoping to raise about $2,000,” said Debra. “We’ve all been training, doing lots of stairs like the Town Beach stairs and Harry’s Lookout. “We stay together and run up and down the stairs of the stadium. So once we’ve done the SCG we go across to the Allianz stadium, which is next door and we do those ones as well. Every single one of us has to do it. We have different fitness levels, but we will all be staying together. We start as a team and finish as a team.” This event is a non-competitive fund raising event held on July 16. To support the GI Jones in raising funds for the Brain Foundation, donations can be made through www.stadiumstomp.com or through www. gofundraise.com.au

Repairs to the Dunbogan Bridge; Continued resealing and rehabilitation of local roads; Playground upgrades across our region, and much more. There are also numerous projects underway that span multiple financial years, including road reconstruction and rehabilitation works such as Ocean Drive at Lakewood, King Creek Road and Gordon St in Port Macquarie. Works to improve Port Macquarie Town Green and Town Square are already underway, Stingray Creek Bridge is nearing completion and the next stage of the Wauchope Pool redevelopment will commence soon. Council also delivers services such as water, sewer and waste services, library services, cultural services and will continue to maintain more than $2 billion of assets on behalf of the community. “It’s an exciting time for our region, and with our new plans now in place Council can remain focussed and committed to delivering a broad range of services on behalf of our community in the most efficient and effective way possible,” added Ms Olsen. An explanation of the role of each of the adopted plans is available in a handy fact sheet, and all the plans can be viewed at Councils website pmhc.nsw.gov.au and at Council offices and libraries in Port Macquarie, Laurieton and Wauchope.

AT it’s recent ordinary meeting, Port MacquarieHastings Council adopted a suite of future plans, including the 2017/18 Operational Plan and budget. In addition to the 2017/18 Operational Plan, Council adopted the 2017-2021 Delivery Program, the 2017-2021 Resourcing Strategy and the revised Towards 2030 Community Strategic Plan. “More than 250 submissions were received during the public exhibition period of the 2017/18 Operational Plan, demonstrating there is a real interest in how and where Council are focussing our efforts, allocating resources and spending ratepayer’s money,” said Acting General Manager Rebecca Olsen. “It is extremely encouraging to know that our community is taking an active interest in Council matters, and with Council planning being an ongoing process we encourage input at any time.” Continuing the great work of recent years, there are more than $100 million of exciting community infrastructure projects occurring during the next 12 months including: The design of the Hastings Regional Sporting facility in Wauchope; Commencing the delivery of sewerage schemes in Comboyne, Long Flat and Telegraph Point; Upgrading the terminal at Port Macquarie Airport;

CANBERRA CONNECTIONS With Dr David Gillespie Federal MP for Lyne

THE Federal Coalition Government is making available grant money to support events organised by local Ex-Service Organisations and community groups for Veterans’ Health Week 2017. Veterans Health Week (VHW) will run from Saturday, October 21, to Sunday, October 29, with the theme of ‘physical activity’. Ex-Service Organisations (ESOs) and community groups with a link to the veteran community could apply for funding to support an activity that was relevant to the theme of physical activity. Regular exercise is important for our health and wellbeing and it’s also a great way to connect with people in the community and make new friends. Veterans’ Health Week 2017 will highlight the importance of improving and maintaining good physical health. Our local ex-service organisations and community groups provide fantastic support to our veteran communities and I encourage them to apply for funding to support an event this year. The VHW funding application form, information kit, resource guide and other documentation to assist activity organisers are available on the Department of Veterans’ Affairs website (www.dva.gov.au/veteranshealth-week) Applications close on July 31, 2017. Contact DVA on 133 254 or 1800 555 254 (for regional callers) for further information. The Coalition Government is also inviting community groups, organisations and individuals to start their own tree planting projects by applying for grants under Grant Round Three of the 20 Million Trees Program. The Coalition Government’s 20 Million Trees Program will see 20 million trees planted across Australia by 2020. Up to $6 million is now available for grants between $20,000 and $100,000 for tree planting projects that will put back threatened bushland and support threatened species. This is a great opportunity for the many people in our community who are committed to looking after our local environment and improving our green spaces. Green spaces connect communities to the environment and improve the liveability of our towns and cities. I encourage interested parties to apply for projects that will provide valuable benefits to the environment and for our local community. Round Three are also now available and applications close on August 15.

Survey for local youths MISSION Australia is urging Port Macquarie’s 15-19 year-olds to speak up on personal concerns and broader issues that are important to them by participating in Youth Survey 2017 before it closes at the end of July. The survey gives young people an opportunity to voice their concerns, aspirations and values on a range of issues. Last year, 7,087 respondents from NSW were amongst nearly 22,000 participants nationwide who had their say. Mission Australia is hoping for even more participation this year, to provide a broader overview of the issues that are important to the health, mental health and wellbeing of young people across the country. The survey results will be released in December and will be used to advocate on behalf of young people. Each year, the Youth Survey provides a valuable snapshot of young Australians and offers many important insights that inform Mission

Australia’s work and that of other community groups as well as Government decision makers. Mission Australia State Director Ben Carblis said this year’s survey includes additional special focus questions on homelessness and barriers to work and urges young people across NSW to take part. “It is so important to listen to the views of Australian young people,” said Mr Carblis. “We check in every year to find out what’s really going on in their lives so that organisations like ours have access to current evidence and so we can advocate on their behalf for the services and broader policy changes that they need, and that are proven to work. “In NSW, we have many schools, community groups and community service organisations who take part in the Youth Survey every year. “In 2017, I’d like to see more schools and groups get involved. The more young people that participate, the more inclusive, insightful and

representative of the broader youth community these results will be,” In 2016, the top three issues identified by young people in NSW as most important in Australia today were alcohol and drugs and equity and discrimination, with mental health entering the top three for the first time in the 15 year history of reporting. Concerns about mental health have doubled since 2011. In the survey, young people continue to nominate coping with stress, school or study problems and body image as their top three issues of personal concern. Mental health issues were also increasingly identified as personal concerns for young people. Mission Australia’s 2017 Youth Survey is open to all Australian young people aged 15-19 years old. To take part in the survey, go to www. missionaustralia.com.au/youthsurvey. Share the word using #YouthSurvey2017

Feldenkrais classes are now in Port FELDENKRAIS awareness classes are now in Port Macquarie. Unlike other exercise modalities, this method asks ‘try less, do less, do not go into pain or excessive effort, stay within a range of comfort and ease’. One may well ask ‘what benefit is that?’ Firstly no pain no pain. Can’t beat that. Secondly these lessons are not exercise lessons, they are awareness lessons, they rekindle movement patterns we had as very young children, things that we had lost over time - drowned out by ignorance and very poor mobility education. These are mobility lessons. Lessons that can help us improve our mobility and general wellbeing. We have new lessons each week, in fact we have over 6000 lessons in the method for every part of the anatomy and every movement we do such as flexion, extension and so on.

Awareness classes introduce a specific set of scientifically designed movement sequences that invoke the deeper part of the brain to find new movement patterns and re-acquire those longforgotten mobility skills we had as children. Most lessons are done on the floor following directions from the teacher. We do not demonstrate unless it is essential. Otherwise we leave it to the student to figure it out. Most movements are out of one’s normal action, odd, but simple, movements that allow the brain to become directly involved guiding the movement. This takes us out of our habitual patterns, the things that have become too dominant, thus finding new and better ways of moving without forcing or straining. Classes are held every Thursday 3pm at the Rotary Hall 198 Hastings River Drive.

During a lesson a person feels a softening of the body and muscles. The tonus evens out along the body and the mind quietens. One’s focus goes deeper into the internal changes. Often, at the end of a class, people feel taller, looser, breathing is deeper and a sense of wellbeing overcomes the entire system along with a calming effect. For people with chronic problems and severe issues we have individual sessions that are tailored to suit the client. These are done on a soft padded table. The practitioner moves the client gently informing the brain and nervous system how to move better without pain. The effect can be quite calming and dramatic. After a session one comes out of it like one would from a deep refreshing sleep. Tom Vudrag CFP is a qualified Feldenkrais Practitioner. For information call Tom 0403 486 528.

Boating applications

MINISTER for Roads, Maritime and Freight and Member for Oxley Melinda Pavey has announced the completion of three NSW Boating Now projects valued at $220,000. Macksville, Nambucca Heads and South West Rocks were part of the 192 projects, which secured a share of $37.5 million funding in the program’s first round of Boating Now to deliver accessible, modern and safe boating infrastructure. Mrs Pavey said applications were now open for round two of the NSW Boating program, which is set to commit $17m to improve boating facilities across NSW. “We’re thrilled to put out a call for applications for the next round of the program, aimed at delivering accessible, modern and safe boating infrastructure where it’s needed most,” she said. Councils, community groups and the boating industry are invited to submit applications under the next round of Boating Now. To find out more www.rms.nsw.gov.au/boatingnow

Waterfall Way funding

MEMBER for Oxley Melinda Pavey has announced more than $3 million to improve safety and travel times on the Waterfall Way. Mrs Pavey said funding provided in the 2017-18 State Budget would go towards the delivery of improvements identified in a road safety review and the Draft Waterfall Corridor Strategy. “The Waterfall Way provides a vital transport link for local communities and industries, and is one of the most scenic roads on the North Coast,” Mrs Pavey said. “Roads and Maritime Services carried out a safety review after feedback from the local community, so this announcement is also a win for them.” Mrs Pavey said the $3m would go towards slope remediation at Sherrard Falls and east of Newell Falls, and road repairs will be carried out near Raleigh Dam. The Draft Waterfall Corridor Strategy which sets out future priorities will be released for community feedback in coming weeks.

The University of Sydney students visited Yarra Rocket Science during their recent tour of Macleay Valley Food Bowl producers

Students ‘crop up’ at Macleay farms SIX students from the University of Sydney met with a range of Macleay Valley Food Bowl producers this month to gain an insight into local agribusiness operations. The Agriculture Masters students visited as part of their studies and were accompanied by the University’s Associate Professor of the Plant Breeding Institute Research Centre School of Life and Environmental Sciences, Brian Jones. The group stayed in Crescent Head during their visit and travelled to a range of successful local farms to meet with producers, including Mountain Nursery at South Kempsey, Graeme Hudson’s pecan nut farm at Euroka, Blueberry Greens at Barraganyatti, Green Leaf Farm at Clybucca, Kempsey Hydroponic Growers, Momacs Macadamia processor in South

Kempsey, an avocado farm at Fishermans Reach and Yarra Rocket Science at Yarrahapinni. Kempsey Shire Council’s Economic Sustainability Unit also gave a presentation to the students regarding Council’s Macleay Valley Food Bowl project, which was established two years ago with the aim of stimulating local agribusiness supply and demand. Council’s Manager of Economic Sustainability, Susannah Smith, thanked the participating producers for welcoming the students to view their operations. “It’s extremely valuable for university students to see first-hand the operational aspects of primary production in regional Australia, particularly in the Macleay, where we have a large variety of successful producers,” she said. “For our producers and our community,

visits like this further establish the Macleay Valley Food Bowl’s growing reputation as a source of high quality, high value produce, with a superior environment and conditions for production.” The Macleay Valley Food Bowl is a multiaward-winning project, having picked up the 2016 Luke Hartsuyker’s Federal Member’s Award, an Excellence in Business Macleay Valley Business Award and the NSW Local Government’s RH Dougherty Award for Excellence in Communication. It will continue to be an area of economic development focus for Council over the next 12 months. For more information, go to: http:// macleayvalleyfoodbowl.com.au/

All the Good stuff in our Community

Picnics a big hit Jesus will set you free at Douglas Vale Way back when With Pastor, Kerry & Julie

THANKS for those who have commented on last month’s ‘Way back when’ about the impact of the Billy Graham Crusade in 1959 on the Hastings and Macleay. Please send any stories on how this event impacted you. I would love to hear from someone who travelled on the special train from Kempsey and Wauchope to hear Billy Graham on April 25, 1959! In September, 1899, despite the day being wet, 150 children and adults from the Wesleyan Church in Port Macquarie enjoyed a Sunday School picnic in the grounds of Douglas Vale. By 1904 children from Port Macquarie’s three main Protestant churches, the Wesleyan Methodist, Presbyterian and St Thomas’ Anglican Church, were enjoying picnics at Douglas Vale. In 1903 over 300 children and adults enjoyed their annual Sunday School picnic. Mr and Mrs Wilson, worshippers at St Thomas’ Church, made the grounds of their homestead available for the children to enjoy. Sunday School picnics were a feature of Church Sunday Schools in the last century. The essentials of a good picnic were running, playing, eating and learning about Jesus. One of the fun events the children loved was the fishing game. A bag of lollies was dangled on the end of a fishing line and children, pretending to be fish, jumped to try and catch the lollies which were often just out of their reach. On another picnic day over 450 sandwiches were made. At the end of the day, not one sandwich was left. A report in the Port Macquarie News of September 19, 1903 said that it was a highlight of the year for the children and the parents seemed to regard the picnic “as the maddest, merriest day of all the year.” Mr and Mrs Wilson hosted Sunday School picnics at Douglas Vale for over 30 years, from the 1890s to the 1920s. They saw this as a wonderful way of sharing God’s blessings with the community. At the end of each picnic, the children would give ‘three cheers’ for Mr and Mrs Wilson for

their warm hospitality at Douglas Vale. Douglas Vale was established in 1859 and is now classified by the National Trust and is part of the Port Macquarie/Hastings Council Heritage Sites listing. The old homestead and vineyards have been faithfully restored by a wonderful group of volunteers. Douglas Vale is open to the public on three days of the week – Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 3pm. It is situated at 235 Oxley Highway between Westport Primary and High Schools. It is well worth a visit. I discovered the story about Douglas Vale hosting Sunday School picnics at an Open Day a few months back. I wish to thank Mrs K. Morrison, Douglas Vale historian, for providing me with extra information about the picnics contained in this article.

every young person is valuable

Q: Will God forgive me if I have had an abortion? A: Recently I met a very distressed young woman who asked me this question. During my 40-plus years of Christian ministry I have had many women confess to feeling very guilty after having aborted a child, often many years before. Women who have had a miscarriage or abortion never forget their loss. In the case of abortion, as well as loss the mothers often struggle with guilt. This guilt can come back to bite them many years later. I have had prayer with women (always with another female present) who have lost children either before and after birth. God offers His love through Jesus at the Cross. Through forgiveness He brings hope, setting those who struggle with guilt free. I encourage anyone struggling with the loss of a child to seek Godly counselling via their local church or through the Healing Rooms in Port Macquarie. Without placing any condemnation on anyone, God sees human life as valuable. David states in Psalm 139:13 that we are God’s creations – “For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb.” God begins His creating process in the womb. Pictures of a fetus in the womb, show a child being formed so distinctly and uniquely. Terminating this child is not God’s plan. Only under very rare circumstances where the survival of the child threatens the life of the mother is it appropriate for a termination to take place. However, healing is available for those who

may have had an abortion. Some years ago, I prayed with an elderly lady who many years before fell pregnant as a teenager. Her family placed her on a train at Wauchope and she was sent to Sydney to have the child aborted. This woman had felt shame and guilt for more than 50 years. It was very moving to see her weeping for her lost child. After telling God she was sorry (in her case, she really had no say in keeping the baby, but still felt guilty), she experienced a spiritual flashback and was re-united with her aborted baby and had a moment of holding the child to her breast. She experienced an incredible release of pain and guilt along with God’s healing love before handing her child to Jesus (where he/she has been for over 50 years). This was one of the most beautiful moments in my ministry and I have seen similar healings many times since. So today, if you are in need of being set free, go to Jesus. He said in John 8:36 – “If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” Then seek out a fellow Christian to pray with you.

Every primary school-aged Port Macquarie Minecraft fan will be excited to hear that the Computer Capers Minecraft School is back

Minecraft back for holiday fun THE hit game Minecraft has been used to teach everything from history to microbiology to the principals of quantum computing, utilising virtual building blocks and creative problemsolving. Every primary aged Port Macquarie Minecraft fan will be excited to hear that the Computer Capers Minecraft School is back, and bigger than ever before. The unique vacation program is being offered during the July School Holidays at St. Joseph’s Primary School between 9am and 3.30pm by local business Computer Capers. Crafters are invited to attend for a full session or half day, playing Minecraft and other popular games on a safe and secure private server, in a big environment, with physical breaks during sessions. “We have a huge program with loads of new and exciting classes that include Minecraft Mania which is the most popular sessions by far, and we have added more mini games to try. We want this holiday program to be the best ever,” says Rob from Computer Capers. “Most kids love Minecraft, but some need step-by-step guidance and support. We like to think that we can help demystify the exciting world of

Minecraft, enabling all children to explore through Minecraft-based activities. We engage with social, as well as hard-toreach children, by motivating them with open-ended activities”. A unique vacation care program, Computer Capers Minecraft School is responsible for creating new friendships and bonds, as participants work together to plan landscapes, fight night-time zombies and continue daily survival. Collaboration, team-building and individual play are all encompassed. Furthermore the sessions examine science, technology, engineering and maths, and beyond that strengthen communication skills, expand and push problem solving skills, while engaging higher order thinking as students plan, develop and build their projects. This School Holidays, the program will feature 10 days and three nights, kicking off with Star Wars and Pizza Night on June 30, where there will be lots of prizes to be won! Computer Capers has a new userfriendly online booking and payment system, together with a new website making it easy to register for the sessions.

State’s best chase IRB title THE curtain will fall on the NSW IRB racing season this weekend when the best from around the state travel to South West Rocks for what is set to be a gruelling weekend at the NSW Championships. South West Rocks SLSC is quickly gaining an excellent reputation for hosting major surf sport events having been the home of the NSW Country Championships for the last two seasons and previously hosting the State IRB Championships in 2014. And this weekend promises to be another glittering event to add to the club’s impressive resume. This weekend there will be more than 310 surf lifesavers racing from 25 surf clubs across the state. And in an intriguing subplot, two clubs - South West Rocks and forthcoming Australian Championship host’s Cudgen Headland - will be racing for the first time this season. South West Rocks SLSC President Rod McDonagh said the club is excited to have a team on the start line and host another carnival. “It’s a first time in a little while we have a team and they’ve been training over the last couple of months so they should go well,” he said “The enthusiasm of our club members particularly when we host carnivals is amazing and we’ve got a good track record. “It brings the whole club together and also builds community support which is great for our small town.” When the action begins, all eyes will be on Kiama Downs who were crowned Premiership Series Champions after the final round at Cape Hawke a fortnight ago. The South Coast club are also the reigning State Championship title holders after narrowly beating fierce rivals Caves Beach last season. While Kiama’s dominance in the

PENNANTS: Subject to numbers, it is intended to run coaches to the state finals at Cabra Vale and Wagga. Please let your intentions known ASAP so this can be finalized. Bruce Anderson and Ken Paulsen have been chosen in the selection trial for NSW senior state side at Cabramatta July 17-18 Congratulations to Jack Lewis who has been selected for the state under 25’s to play Queensland later this year. Congratulations to Greg Brims and Danny Barrett who defeated the North Haven team 2620 in the final of the State Men’s Pairs-Zone 14 Southern Section. The zone final will be played at Stuarts Point on July 29-30 against the Park Beach team of Corey Daley and Craig Donaldson.

Clubs from around the state will be in action at South West Rocks on Saturday as the curtain comes down on the NSW IRB racing season. (Photo: PAUL DAVIS) Premiership Series is unquestioned (2017 was their sixth consecutive title) their Hunter rivals have had much more success on the state stage having won the title 11 out of the past 14 seasons with many of these wins having occurred at South West Rocks. Caves Beach IRB Captain Scott Bryant said they’ve been training towards this event. “State and Australian Championships are the carnivals we train for every year,” said Bryant.

“We aim to peak at the precise time which is why we’re fairly slow starters in the Premiership but we’ve been improving each round. “Kiama Downs will be hard to beat but not impossible. “We’ll have to get everything right to beat them but I think if we do we can certainly give it a shot. “It’s a nice even beach, flat water and takes a little bit of luck out of the racing and it all comes

The NSW state singles zone 14 southern section is being held at Port City starting weekend of July 8-9. The draw is on the notice board. Markers are required. There’s Wow factor to Rd17 WOW, what a round of rugby league we have coming up. First of all, it’s a full card – eight games. But have a look at the match-ups. Broncos v Storm; Roosters v Sharks; Raiders v Cowboys. Even right through to Knights v Tigers. It’s Round 17 and teams in the bottom half are desperately doing the math. There are now only 10 games to go to steal a position in the top eight. Almost every season there is the ‘Dark Horse’. A team sitting well back in the field who flashes home over these final rounds. And there is nothing better than coming into the finals with winning form. So, will it be your team in 2017? Could the Raiders, Bulldogs, or even Titans suddenly find the formula, form or shrug off injuries to finish with a wet sail? If so, which of the current middle placed teams will stall with the finish line in sight? Buckle up! It’s about to get bumpy.

Eels v Bulldogs (Thursday, June 29, 7.50pm, ANZ Stadium, Sydney): Eels are fresh from their first bye of the year and sitting in the top eight. This is a traditional grudge match and the Bulldogs come into it with ordinary stats – they have scored the least amount of points of any team in the comp. The Eels’ ride so far has not been smooth, but they are smelling finals. • Your Local Independent tips: Eels Titans v Dragons (Friday, June 30, 6pm, Cbus Super Stadium, Gold Coast): Both teams scored vital wins last weekend - Titans were solid over Tigers and the Dragons won a bizarre seesaw against the Knights. Titans are getting troops back from injury and are at home. They know they basically have to keep winning to make the eight. The Dragons have been very hit-and-miss recently. • Your Local Independent tips: Titans Broncos v Storm (Friday, June 30, 7.50pm, Suncorp Stadium, Brisbane): Storm impress

even in losing. Last week they went down by a point to a near full-strength Roosters despite having Smith, Cronk, Slater and Chambers out. Those four are almost certain to be back. The Broncos were also impressive despite having Boyd and Milford out. Broncs are always tough at Suncorp, but form line and bookies say Melbourne. • Your Local Independent tips: Storm Roosters v Sharks (Saturday, July 1, 3pm, Central Coast Stadium, Gosford): Roosters take their home game to Gosford for this clash with the premiers. Both teams are ‘up there’ but not convincing. Last weekend the Roosters ‘got out of jail’ against a very under-strength Storm and the Sharks lost to Manly. No doubt Cronulla are feeling the weight of Origin. This is a toss of the coin. • Your Local Independent tips: Sharks Sea Eagles v Warriors (Saturday, July 1, 5.30pm, nib Stadium, Perth): Manly are

arguably the story of the season. Bottom four last year and now in the top four. They gave the Sharks a touch-up last weekend to make it four wins in a row. However the Warriors have snuck up to be a win out of the eight with three wins from their last four. This game is in Perth, so no home advantage for the Sea Eagles, but they still should have enough. • Your Local Independent tips: Sea eagles Raiders v Cowboys (Saturday, July 1, 7.30pm, GIO Stadium, Canberra): Desperate Raiders v a Cowboys team coming to terms with being without JT. This one could go either way depending on where players’ heads are. There is no doubt NQ are still a class side. However so are the Raiders – they’re just not playing like it. OK, give the Raiders ONE more chance. • Your Local Independent tips: Raiders Knights v Tigers (Sunday, July 2, 2pm, McDonald Jones Stadium, Newcastle): Emotion says give this one to the Knights. In

patches they were very good against the Dragons last weekend before blowing a 28-10 lead. They are at home and that great Newcastle spirit is still there … somewhere. The danger is that Tedesco is due back from injury for the Tigers. • Your Local Independent tips: Knights Rabbitohs v Panthers (Sunday, July 2, 4pm, ANZ Stadium, Sydney): Rabbits come off a bye. The Panthers come off a close loss to the Cowboys. Just one win separates these teams and there will be plenty of Bunny supporters who believe there is still some fire in the belly. Trouble is both teams are just so inconsistent. Panthers are bookies favourites – but really don’t deserve to be. • Your Local Independent tips: Rabbitohs
