75 years! Local version of everlasting love
By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC THERE is one question Frank and Freda Weidenbohm get asked more and more: ‘What’s the secret to a long life and a lasting marriage?’ They should know. On April 7 Frank, aged 97, and Freda, aged 93, will be celebrating their 75th wedding anniversary. “Mum and dad said that being together and working through the ups and downs of life is the secret to their marriage,” said daughter Dulcie Shoesmith. “For their age, they are still in pretty good health. They still look after themselves and dad still gets around on the walker. They live out on their own at Lake Innes and have lived in the Hastings all of their lives.” The couple first met in

Pappinbarra, about 50km west of Port Macquarie, and soon after they were married in the Wauchope Presbyterian Church. They started their married life living out at Rollands Plains, and then moved to Port Macquarie, and have been settled in Lake Innes for over 19 years. “Frank walked into the dairy when Freda was milking the cows by hand and Frank spotted her and said she was the girl for him,” Dulcie said. “Things just blossomed from there. “Mum was a full time mother. It was a full time job bringing up six children. She also served as a Pink Lady at the Port Macquarie Hospital, both the new and the old hospital. She is still a Pink Ladies patron today.” • Continued Page 6

Remembering through music Choristers focus on pivotal French battle
By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC
MOST Australians are aware of why we celebrate ANZAC Day, however, many don’t know about the significance Australians had on a small town in France. The Hastings Choristers concert ‘Lest We Forget’ (on April 13-14) pays special tribute to the lives lost in World War One. “Few Australians have heard of the Battle of Villers-Bretonneux in France,” said Colleen Smee, Vice President/Publicity Officer of the Hastings Choristers. “Australian troops saved the town for the French inhabitants and consequentlyAustralians are honoured and remembered in this town to the present day.” April 2018 celebrates one hundred years since the battle in France, just three years after the landing of Australian forces at Gallipoli. “The Battle of Villers-Bretonneux displayed the true Anzac spirit of the Australian Imperial Forces,” Colleen said. “The second day of the battle, April 25th, 1918, the Australians recaptured the town from the Germans. The Australian troops showed enormous courage and paid the ultimate sacrifice, with over 1,200 lives being lost.” To commemorate this important centenary, The Hastings Choristers are presenting a choral tribute to honour the courage, resourcefulness and sacrifice of Australian soldiers on the Western Front and at Gallipoli during World War One. The program will feature In Flanders Fields and Gabriel Fauré’s Requiem as well as many more beautiful, moving choral pieces and instrumental music. The choristers will be joined by soloists baritone Joshua Salter, mezzo soprano Stella Hannock and Heather Moen-Boyd, organist, and Musical Director Robyn Ryan (OAM). “The audience is in for a real treat of inspiring and moving music,” said Colleen. “Not only are the Choristers performing three lovely pieces plus the exquisite Fauré Requiem, but our guest organist Heather Moen-Boyd will perform individual pieces, and our mezzo soprano Stella Hannock and baritone Joshua Salter will sing a selection of beautiful solo pieces, including one of my favourites Pie Jesu. “The talented flautist Natasha French will also accompany some of our repertoire. With our musical director Robyn Ryan conducting, this promises to be a spectacular concert for music lovers.” This Battle of Villers-Bretonneux significantly affected the outcome of the First World War as it halted the German offensive and allowed the Allies to begin pushing back the German front line, contributing to the Allied victory in November 2018. The mayor of Villers-Bretonneux spoke fondly of the Australian troops on July 14,
Members of the Hastings Choristers preparing for their April 13-14 performance
The war cemetery at Villers-Bretonneux in France 1919. “The first inhabitants of Villers-Bretonneux to re-establish themselves in the ruins of what was once a flourishing little town have, by means of donations, shown a desire to thank the valorous Australian Armies, who with the spontaneous enthusiasm and characteristic dash of their race, in a few hours drove out an enemy ten times their number,” he said. “They offer a memorial tablet, a gift which is but the least expression of their gratitude, compared with the brilliant feat which was accomplished by the sons of Australia...Soldiers of Australia, whose brothers lie here in French soil, be assured that your memory will always be kept alive, and that the burial places of your dead
will always be respected and cared for.” The school in Villers-Bretonneux was rebuilt using donations from school children in Victoria, Australia, many of whom had relations who died in the town’s liberation. Now, above every blackboard in the school lies the inscription “N’oublions jamais l’Australie”, ‘Let us never forget Australia’. Just outside the French town lies the graves of 770 Australian soldiers in the Australian War Memorial. On April 25 each year the Western Front Anzac Day ceremony takes place here. “Every now and then we perform a concert near Anzac Day to pay tribute to all those lives lost in war,” Colleen explained. “I remember The Choristers performed In Flanders Fields concert in April 2010. The Lest We Forget concert is particularly special this year being the centenary of the Villers-Bretonneux battle and it is such an amazing coincidence that the date (April 25) of this battle coincides with Anzac Day. “This is just one of our main concerts for the year,” Colleen said. “Our Christmas concert repertoire is quite extensive and we are also planning our Kaleidoscope Concert later in the year, when choirs from all over the Mid-North Coast will join us for a big, exciting event. Yet we are confident that the Lest We Forget concert will draw in a large audience, not only our loyal supporters who love choral music, but also those in our community who have been touched by the tragedy of war and would like to take the
opportunity to come to the concert, reflect and find solace in beautiful music.” The concerts will take place on Friday April 13 at 7pm and Saturday April 14 at 1.30 pm at the St Agnes Church, Hay Street, Port Macquarie. Tickets are $20 for adults, $10 for under 18s. Tickets will be available at the Door or at the Glasshouse Box Office. Contact the Glasshouse on 6581 8888 or www.glasshouse.org.au • Acclaimed performer for Opera Australia, Dr Jennifer Barnes, is holding a workshop on Sunday, April 8, at the St. Agnes Catholic Church Hall between 10.30am and 3pm. Dr Barnes will be sharing her expertise and understanding of voice with singers across classical, musical theatre, contemporary and jazz genres. Dr Barnes was known for her role of Cio-Cio San in Madama Butterfly. Her workshop ‘Understanding Your Voice’ focuses on the vocal anatomy and the influence of the mind on voice. The workshop will include time for a master class with willing singers. For more information, contact Dr Jennifer Barnes 0419 849315 or Robyn Ryan 0407 007993. OF THE
I’D like to comment on Sandy Mackenzie’s From the Heart editorial, ‘It’s a mirror moment’. Bullying is worsening in our society and victimization of people in the work place, schools, the military, churches and the elderly in nursing homes because there is no accountability. When I attended school in the ‘50s and early ‘60s we were allowed to defend ourselves from bullying. We also had corporal punishment and the bad kids went to the office of the headmistress or headmaster and got the cane. Now if anyone defends themselves against bullies they are punished more than the bully. It’s the new political correctness that says criminals and bullies have more rights than the victim. I don’t think attitudes will change unless parents and teachers discipline children which will be difficult because teachers and parents are
deprived of the right to punish badly behaved children. Many of the teenage assassins in American schools were bullied or on antidepressants. Some were addicted to video games but they were all depressed and disturbed. If school bullies were disciplined by other students then bullying would occur less often. The enablers of the bullies are really just as bad as the perpetrators as they say nothing. There should be severe punishments for teenagers who drive other students to suicide. They are not children and are morally accountable. Primary school children who terrorize other kids should also be institutionalized because they are incorrigible. Lesley Chapman Lakewood

We have a bunch of entitled, elite sports men and women in Australia – both talented and indecently overpaid – who seem to think they are above the rest of us and can do whatever they want, at a great cost to the country. Why wouldn’t they? Our Prime Minister believes they sit higher in the pecking order! I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, the world is the way it is because of the leaders who are in place. This is trickledown economics/effects at it best. Crap at the top always filters down. If our government and the politicians who make up our government aren’t honest and transparent, how can we expect that from our society? There is so much cheating, manipulation, lying, misinformation and downright dirty tactics currently playing out in the political arena I’m surprised there hasn’t been more of the same. Frankly, political speeches about national disappointment doesn’t cut it. Make a stand on behalf of the nation and pull the funding for Cricket Australia. We, as a nation pay these elite sports personnel huge amounts to represent Australia. You couldn’t pay me enough to watch a game of cricket, so I’d like to withdraw my support and have my share put towards something of tangible benefit. Please?
TO the honest, wonderful people who found and handed in my purse to the facilitators of Laurieton River Walk Markets on Sunday, March 18, I am very grateful.

OMG! The shock, the horror, the shame, the embarrassment! The iconic ‘baggy green’ has been dragged through the mud and the nation is in a state of devastation and turmoil, over last weekend’s ball tampering incident. It’s a national disgrace! Really? I’m not in the least surprised. Remember the underarm bowling incident in 1981? It’s not the first time the Australian Cricket team have been caught cheating. It’s probably just the first time someone has been stupid enough to get caught! I’m not condoning the actions of our national cricket team, far from it – I agree it is a national disgrace. I just don’t get why people are so shocked and why, what our cricket team does stirs so much emotion and patriotism – yet the appalling state of our government and their actions is met with such apathy? Perhaps if we cared as much about the state of the country as we do about how the national sports teams perform, things might change? You’re either wondering what I’m on about, or you totally get my drift. I probably wouldn’t have bothered saying anything about the whole sordid affair until I heard our esteemed PM talking about how “shocked and bitterly disappointed he was… it’s completely beyond belief. Our cricketers are role models, cricket is synonymous with fair play…” The piece d ’resistance (for me) of his heartfelt response? “…I have to say the whole nation who holds those who wear the baggy green up on a pedestal about as high as you can get, certainly higher than any politician in Australia, that’s for sure, this is a shocking disappointment…” Is it just me? Or is there something completely wrong with this? In my humble view, this statement epitomises what’s the matter with the world.

Playing your cards right! Bridge is a “greatPlaying way to get away
By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC
from the daily routine, responsibilities and concerns and enjoy 3-4 hours of peace, fun and mental stimulation.
“
THE Mid North Coast’s most popular card game is bringing together hundreds of players each week. The Port Macquarie-Hastings Bridge Club is keeping its players social, healthy, and happy. “We’ve got about 250 members and we get on average between 50-100 players at our clubhouse six days a week,” said Ian Peterson, Vice President of the Port Macquarie-Hastings Bridge Club. “We are always after new members, young or old. Like any club, any new members are the lifeblood of the club. “It’s an older person’s game, so with health and age going against us you lose some members throughout the year.” Bridge may be an older person’s sport, but for many older residents across the Mid North Coast, it’s their main source of social interaction. “Particularly for older people as you age, you are less physically able and your friends are less physically able, so your social network tends to fall apart,” explained Ian. “Bridge keeps that social interaction going. “Bridge, along with a lot of other mind sports, is good for both delaying the onset of dementia and slowing the development of it. Bridge is competing with things like learning a language, a new dance, playing chess, or crossword puzzles. There are studies that show that bridge boosts your immune system too. “Other alternative mind sports like learning languages and doing crossword puzzles, they don’t have the social element, where as bridge you are playing with a partner and playing against other people and you are mixing with a large group of people every time you play.” The clubhouse opens its doors six days a week, Monday through to Saturday with its
games taking place from 1pm-5pm. Although the age demographic of bridge players tends to be older, the club is always welcoming younger players. “We would love some younger people to learn how to play bridge too,” Ian said. “In fact we are looking at running a separate lesson program for TAFE and University of Newcastle students. We are trying to do that at the moment and are advertising on their website to try and get some young people along. “It is a difficult thing because bridge takes time to learn how to play and when people
have got careers and young families and all the commitment that goes with them it’s pretty hard to find the time. So it tends to be an older person’s game.” Port Macquarie-Hastings Bridge Club player Carol Briscoe is an experienced player. “I’ve absolutely loved it,” said Carol, who has been playing for 30 plus years. “I’ve made many dear friends through Bridge and had some great times travelling away to play in Congresses (tournaments).” With Port Macquarie-Hastings Bridge Club launching its New Player Lessons Program in
April, Carol emphasised the importance of a thorough grounding in getting the most out of the game. “It’s essential to have the basics,” Carol said. “There’s a lot involved in playing Bridge – some people are good natural card players but even they need a comprehensive understanding of bidding and responding principles so as to get into the right contracts and make them most of the time.” Carol is excited to meet this year’s class of new players. “They keep the Club going,” Carol said. “It’s great the way they bring in new vitality, ideas and freshness and I love their willingness to learn. “Playing Bridge is a great way to get away from the daily routine, responsibilities and concerns and enjoy 3-4 hours of peace, fun and mental stimulation.” New players are invited to the Port Macquarie-Hastings Open Day on Friday April 6 2018 from 11.30am and Lessons Program on Friday April 13 2018 from 9am (for 10 weeks). To get involved, contact Linda Richards, Lessons Registrar, 0432 221 660. The Clubhouse is located at Hamilton Green, 176 Hastings River Drive, Port Macquarie.

Couple to mark 75th anniversary
Kempsey’s Riverside Park was swallowed under muddy brown flood waters when the Macleay River swelled, breaking its banks
Rain brings smiles ... now By SUE PATERICK AS I write this a big East Coast low has just dumped over 400 millimetres of rain on parts of the Mid North Coast in just two days. Water is rushing and running down our gullies bringing a smile to our faces. The calming sound is as playful as a waterfall spilling down a hillside, and very welcome. It was as dry as the Sahara desert with the threat of bushfire ever present before the big wet. So to have our water gauge (aka a big plastic bucket in the back yard) overflow twice was a blessing. The birds are singing and the bush is smiling, greening up almost overnight. On Friday March 23 it was still raining but just passing showers, though sometimes heavy, after a night of pounding heavy rain. According to Kempsey State Emergency Service (SES) Media Officer Greg Gill, the SES was busy with callouts for people needing assistance. Greg’s advice to everyone was to clean out their gutters if heavy rain had been forecast. “Otherwise your gutters will back up and water will come inside your house,” he said. “And never drive through flood waters.” Kempsey Shire council issued regular and in-depth flood reports showing the number of local roads and bridges that were closed, plus the heights of the Macleay River. The heavy rain caused Georges Creek in the Macleay River’s catchment to rise. Up in this high and wild country jagged mountains trap clouds and gullies plunge down deep to the valley floor. The Macleay River swells from this creek plus many other tributaries, and over the years it has been an unstoppable force.
• From Page 1 “Dad used to do farm work in the Plains and then when he came to Port he took a job in the cement works. He built cement floors in Port Macquarie where a lot of the hotels and houses are built on today.” Frank and Freda had six children – Dulcie, Doris (deceased), Darcy, Mervyn, Neville (deceased), and Loraine (deceased). They have also been blessed with 12 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren and 15 great, great grandchildren. Dulcie says hard work and a good diet has seen her parents live a long life, and cultivate a happy and lasting marriage. “They both worked hard all their lives,” said Dulcie. “They have never been drinkers and they don’t smoke. They go to bed early, eat well, and live a very healthy life. “When they were younger they used to go on many driving holidays together and trip around a lot. They played croquet and bowls together. Mum was always very involved in playing cards, her role as a Pink Lady, volunteering at the Royal Far West Shop, and playing tennis. “Dad loved fishing and spending time with mum at home.” When asked what their favourite thing about each other is, Frank replied: “Freda was always a very hard worker and always helped people, I love that about her.” And Freda replied: “Frank is a friendly and jolly person to be around.” Frank and Freda will be joined with over 70 family members to celebrate their 75th wedding anniversary on April 7. “We are really looking forward to celebrating this massive milestone for my parents,” said Dulcie. “I think this celebration will keep them very happy for a long time.”
Litter kits available The Macleay Valley’s normally tranquil Dungay Creek was a raging torrent last week Locals still talk of devastating floods in days gone by. This time the Macleay only reached minor flood levels, but as usual all of its upriver bridges were closed for days. The BOM’s seven-day forecast looked as if we would be back to summer by today, Thursday March 29, with daytime temperatures expected to reach 32 degrees. I remember a soggy and busy time in 2001 when this journalist was younger and fitter, and covered a terrible flood that drowned the Macleay Valley from horizon to horizon. It was late March then too as I recall and we had two big rain events back to back. So that second lot of rain just ran off the already drenched soil and flooded the Macleay
Valley. At this time of year it can easily happen again and I am watching the newest cyclones in the Northern Territory and Western Australia very closely, just in case they came our way too. If you do ever find yourself in need of help remember to dial 132 500 for emergency assistance and in life threatening situations dial Triple Zero - 000. You can also dial two secondary emergency call service numbers: 112 and 106. Calling 112 is available from all GSM or GSM-derived mobile phones. The number 106 connects anyone with a hearing or speech impairment to a text-based relay service. All calls to the emergency numbers are free.
FREE Picitup litter kits are now available from Port Macquarie-Hastings Council for locals keen to do their bit in keeping our community litter free. Council Acting Director, Dan Croft said the Picitup kits are a simple but effective way of helping people clean up litter as well as track down where it comes from. “The kits include a handmade Boomerang shoulder-bag, four litter sacks, two pairs of gloves and a booklet to record what litter is picked up,” Mr Croft said. “Putting the collected litter in the right bin gets the waste to the right place, keeps our public places clean and tidy, and helps prevent the drains on our streets from blocking, and litter ending up in our rivers and on beaches.” The free Picitup litter kits can be collected from Council’s Customer Service Centres in Wauchope, Laurieton and Port Macquarie. For more information on Council’s waste services or to learn more about what goes in which bin, visit pmhc.nsw.gov.au/waste
FROM THE MAYOR A weekly conversation with Mayor Peta Pinson It’s a topic that we don’t often talk about (for obvious reasons), however it is part of our everyday lives, and a critical community service that is a high focus for Council. I’m talking about sewerage, what goes down our loo, how it’s processed, and where it all ends up. Last week I had the opportunity to visit the Bonny Hills Waste Treatment Plant, and what a fascinating experience it was. I really didn’t know what to expect, however I was keen to learn about this key function, one that we’ll invest more than $36 million in over the coming year. I was expecting a dirty and smelly afternoon, however nothing could be further from the truth. The highly technical operation really opened my eyes to how we manage such an important service and keep it safe.
The Bonny Hills plant is one of five across our region, and the sewage we all generate is passed through various stages of treatment before being either reused or discharged, with the pollutants separated from the water so that both the treated water and the solid by-products can be reused. The Bonny Hills Waste Treatment Plant was upgraded in 2009, with the capacity doubled to service the equivalent of 12,000 people, and during 2017 the plant processed more than 471 million litres of liquid waste. This includes the liquid waste from our kitchen, laundry and bathrooms. That’s a lot of flushes and washes, and our investment in innovative technologies such as new aerators and a Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system has resulted in an economical, efficient and environmentally safe plant that will service our growing population for many years to come.
pmhc.nsw.gov.au Speaking of flushing, what we put down our loo is extremely important. Common items that we see include nappies, cotton buds, sanitary items, dental floss, incontinence pads, kitty litter, cigarette butts and medications. These things cause significant sewer blockages along the network, and equipment failure at sewage treatment plants by jamming pumping equipment. Wet wipes, cleaning wipes and toilet wipes are not biodegradable and are a definite ‘no no’ … despite what the advertising says. So next time you flush, think about the journey that our sewerage is taking, and always remember the three Ps … the only things you should flush down the toilet is Poo, Pee and Paper (toilet paper). Until next week, Peta.

Wauchope Show is still a favourite
Pictured: The Friday and Saturday night action is a real crowd favourite at the Wauchope show.
By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC AFTER 108 years the Wauchope Show is still a local favourite. The two-day show in April that stops the town is back again and this year the Wauchope Show Society is expecting a big turn out. “It’s always good to see new people coming along to the show,” said Neil Coombes, President of the Wauchope Show Society. “We know we’ve still got a great relationship with the locals who come every year, as well as the exhibitors who exhibit every year, but having new people come each year shows people are still interested in our show.” The 2018 show will be introducing Wauchope to Golden Guitar Winner Amber Lawrence on the Friday night. Amber will also be performing the National Anthem at the grand parade and official opening on Saturday at 2.30pm. Amber is known for capturing the nation with her songs about Australia, it’s people and the things that matter to them. The country music star will be performing her ‘Kids Gone Country’ album.
“We can’t wait to have Amber perform at the show. Its really exciting to have her as part of our fantastic entertainment line-up,” said Andrew Carroll, Wauchope Show Society Entertainment Coordinator. “We couldn’t do it without the support from sponsors like Harcourts Greater Port Macquarie, Wauchope RSL Club and Warren Plowright Toyota.” Neil, who has been a part of the Wauchope Show for over 14 years says families love the fireworks on the Friday night and the Demolition Derby on the Saturday night. “We also have a guy from Queensland coming
down to the show and he has an exhibit called ‘Living Australia’,” said Neil. “They make butter and brooms and all that old sort of stuff and they will be there both days of the show from 9am5pm.” There’s also one event in particular that draws a lot of attention - The Wauchope Showgirl of the Year. Last year’s Wauchope winner Nikki Gibbs recently took out the major prize at the Sydney Royal Showgirl competition. “Our showgirls are a big highlight and have been very successful over the years,” said Neil.
“Our show will have 7 senior and 7 junior showgirls. Our showgirls have been apart of the Sydney Royal Showgirl competition for three years now.” Of course the Wauchope Show will include all of its usual favourites – the horse and cattle events, bars filled with live music, the woodchop competition, the pavilion stocked with trade and food stalls, the animal nursery, and many more events and exhibitions. Neil says the greatest difference to the show has been the grounds. “Each year the show gets better and better and this year we are focusing on getting bigger and better rides,” Neil said. “But the biggest difference for our society over the years I think has been the grounds. We’ve had a lot of upgrades with underground power going in, we’ve painted things for a look better, and just the overall maintenance of the place. We couldn’t have done all that without the success of our show and our sponsors.” The 108th Wauchope Show will take place on April 6 and 7 from 8am at the Wauchope Showgrounds located in High Street, Wauchope. Admission is $15 for adults, $10 for pensioners, and $5 for children aged 5-16. Admission for groups with 2 adults and up to 3 children is $30. Get your two-day pass for 2 adults and up to 3 children for $50 (presold at the office only until April 5). For the full program of events, visit http:// www.wauchopeshowsociety.com.au

Community L nks
with Robbie Lloyd
Sponsored by SkillsLink Training - your community college.
We can be part of your NDIS plan THE college is pleased to announce that we have now been formally registered until 2021 as an official provider with the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). This means that we can help with a range of programs that fit into different people’s NDIS Plans, but mainly as group experiences. If you are already attending classes at the community college, you may get a fee reduction depending on your individual package. Because people’s NDIS Plans all vary in their level of financial support, we try to combine shared interest areas among people with similar passions. So if creative arts are your thing, we can bring a group together in the MakerSpace to provide a group experience. Similarly, with music and performing arts, we will need a group to be able to create a sustainable program, so finding participants with similar interests helps us to generate a new learning experience. Those seeking skills to help find work, or even setting up micro businesses, will also find assistance in our group programs. So if you want to “Participate in the Community”, “Develop Life Skills”, get assistance with “Life Stage Transitions”, or seek “Special Supported Employment” we would like to hear from you so we can develop programs that will suit the needs of the community and the individual. Come and see us at 77 Hastings River Drive or give us a call on 65837288. And you can check out the website at www. skillslink.edu.au.
Funding allows pedestrian work NEW Pedestrian Crossing For Laurieton: A much needed pedestrian crossing will be installed in Bold Street at Laurieton between Seymour and Tunis Streets. The $347,000 project will include a mid-block zebra pedestrian crossing, kerb extensions and additional street lights, modification of parking layout, taxi stand, bus stop and loading zones. There will also be improvements to the access to the Coles car park from Bold Street, wider footpaths including outdoor dining pods and landscaped areas to provide for garden beds and trees. Whilst there are already a number of pedestrian refuges and a crossing in Bold Street, this latest crossing will be ideally located across from the Coles supermarket and is already a high pedestrian area. Funding for this important infrastructure is through the NSW Government’s Stronger Country Communities Fund. An additional $200 million will be available for regional towns and cities across NSW, as part of Round Two of the Stronger Country Communities Fund. Increasing Economic Opportunities for Women: Local organisations are being encouraged to apply for the latest round of the state wide Investing in Women grants program. Applications for Investing in Women grants
STATE MATTERS With Leslie Williams State Member for Port Macquarie
are open to organisations that promote pathways and reduce barriers for women entering the workforce or their chosen profession. Along with double the funding for round six of the program, guidelines have been changed to increase the maximum amount available per grant from $25,000 to $100,000. The NSW Government is calling for applications from across NSW in seven key areas: women’s economic opportunity and advancement; equitable workplaces for women and men; women in small business; women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) careers; women in maledominated trades; women in leadership roles; and leadership pathways for young women. CANBERRA CONNECTIONS With Dr David Gillespie Federal MP for Lyne
MANY people have contacted me regarding last week’s pensioner and retiree’s policy announcement by Labor Leader Bill Shorten that will see many locals thousands of dollars a year worse off. Mr Shorten plans to double tax for pensioners and retirees in a bid to bail him out of a budget black hole he cannot pay for. Since the Coalition was elected, we have continued to work to get the budget back under control despite regular opposition by Labor and the Senate. Like all households, the Commonwealth must live within its means, however, in order to pay for its never-ending list of promises, the Labor Party continually proposes more taxes, debt and deficit. Labor’s latest tax grab does not target wealthy retirees. More than half of all refunded franking credits are paid to individuals who earn less than the $18,200 tax free threshold - including pensioners and self-funded retirees. And 97% of people who receive franking credit refunds have a taxable income below $87,000. Labor’s policy will hit any person who holds shares in a company and has a low income, including all retirees and those with low incomes and small shareholdings.
A really blockbuster of a word A NEWSREADER on a radio station told us that a football match would be a blockbuster. I thought it was just another run-of-the-mill match, but blockbuster it had to be. I had heard about movies “this one’s a blockbuster”. I had snored my way through some movies that were called blockbusters and thinking that was the result of an over-enthusiastic press agent. Some even predicted the start of a country sporting competition would be a blockbuster. Blockbuster wasn’t the result of movies or sport at all. It was a wartime word. During the second world war, the Royal Air Force began using aerial bombs large enough to destroy significant building complexes. They called these bombs blocks. Something large or important had blockbuster force, capable of destroying whole blocks of buildings. My big dictionary described a blockbuster as “an aerial bomb capable of destroying a whole block of buildings”. It went on to describe blockbusting as “the nature of a blockbuster”, whatever that meant. These bombs had been given their name about 1942. Then later the term extended to non-military use. Thousands of uses came for blockbuster and most did not refer to bombs. In the United States barbiturates are called
my
LAURIE BARBER
blockbusters. The first black family to move into an all-white neighbourhood were also called blockbusters. Then came the big movies, sometimes even little ones. You can make up your own movie title Titanic, Jurassic Park or movies that brought in far more than the cost of production. Then there were stores, novels (“after his blockbuster first novel, the author was never able to achieve that degree of success”). I won’t tell you the author’s name. You might like him and then you might take it out on me. It had a TV game show, the name of comics, a wrestling show, a children’s TV show, music, real estate agencies, even a type of axe. A yacht club in Australia was called a blockbuster club and it had several blockbuster dates in its program. Somebody even had a cooking competition. I won’t tell you who it was, but I couldn’t imagine a cook boasting that she,
or he, won a blockbuster cooking competition. Then there is the word block. The dictionaries seem to include far more than I can cover here from a solid piece of wood to the shape of a hat to the name of stores. It seems like there are millions of them. They range from the stump of a tree without the limbs (“a butcher chops his meat”), a falcon’s perch, the style of a hat, a wooden head for a wig, a substratum or core (the rigging of ships), a piece of wood acting as a support, a piece of material wound on a board, the hob at throwing quoits, wholesale, a group of words treated as single unit. Wholesale, the carcass of a bullock, an obstruction, a fashionable promenade outside a block of buildings, a block of land divided for settlement, a blockhead or a hard-hearted person, an obstruction to traffic, a parliamentary term and the list goes on. How about other versions of block I found, such as block ball, block capital, block cutter, block letter, block model, block welding or block working, block heater or block booking. The dictionary even had sporting terms, such as American football or cricket. But be careful how you use blockbuster. You might be correct one day. lauriebarber.com; lbword@midcoast.com.au.

Tools to boost mental health By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC ONE in five Australians are suffering from depression or anxiety, so it’s no wonder it’s at the forefront of many conversations in the media. A new depression and anxiety recovery program ‘Life Beyond the Emptiness - Living with Depression & Anxiety’ is not only seeking people suffering from mental health, but anyone wanting peak mental and physical health. “I think mental health is becoming more and more to the front of people’s minds, it’s all over the radio and television,” said Desley Bailey, Associate Director of the Program and host of the Wauchope event. “This program is definitely for people with depression and anxiety, but it’s also for anyone who wants to not have depression or anxiety at some stage down the track. “These same tools will also prevent the onset of dementia and Alzheimers because they are also a lifestyle related disease.” There will be free introductory sessions about the program at Rollands Plains Hall on Monday, April 16, from 6pm and at the Wauchope Senior Citizens Centre on Monday, April 23. Dr Neil Nedley has put together the 8-week Depression and Anxiety Recovery Program from his nearly 20 years of research and clinical experience helping his patients. “Anyone can come along to the free info session and decide whether this is for them,” said Desley. “If that program is for them that’s when they register and we will conduct the sessions in a group setting. “Often people with depression isolate themselves and they need that group support perhaps more than they think they do. So after
Associate director of the program, Desley Bailey, far left, with some of the people who help her run the program - Kathleen, Petra, Kevin, Cathy, Dave, Alex and Scott the information sessions we will be running the sessions on a Monday night for 8 weeks and that’s where we will learn the tools we need to recover.” Desley says residents in country towns are just as prone to mental health issues as people living in larger cities. “I thought that country areas would have less depression, but from what I’ve heard that’s not the case,” Desley explained. “There are actually higher levels of depression in regional areas than in the city.” Desley also says the age demographic of people suffering with depression and anxiety has significantly changed. “Traditionally it’s always been the 40-yearold age bracket that was most susceptible to
depression,” she said. “They used to call it the ‘mid life crisis’. Whereas now, we are finding that it’s 15-25 year olds that are really struggling with this. “The reason behind this is down to how we are living our lives. Dr Nedley has discovered ten categories that can lead to depression. You need to have 4-5 of those to happen in your life for you to have depression. “Sometimes it is grief and loss that will trigger it, sometimes it is our lifestyle - not getting enough sleep, working shift work, lack of exercise, looking at technology too late at night. “There is something called ‘technology hygiene’ and it’s been recommended that we turn off all technology and screens for at least half an hour before we go to sleep.”
Mental health treatment is also moving in another direction. “In the past we’ve only focused on symptoms, and dealing out medications to deal with symptoms,” Desley explained. “We are now moving forward and realising the interplay between our mind and our body and our lifestyle and our health. “I think science is slowly moving towards realising it’s not just a medication we need it’s education. And that’s the same whether it be heart disease, diabetes, obesity, cancer - all the major killers of our society are really a choice thing. We choose to have those diseases because of our lifestyle, the everyday small choices that we make.” Desley says there is one habit that people can start making right now that will change their life for the better. “The one key thing everyone can do to improve their mental health is by exercising outside in the sunshine with the fresh air and drinking lots of water,” Desley said. “It’s the most significant thing that someone can change in their lifestyle. It releases those feel good endorphin hormones that lift our minds and our spirits. “When I look at my life, I have a grandmother that had mental illness and my mother struggled with situational depression because of the circumstances in my family. “So I’ve already got those two hits in my life, but because the other parts of my lifestyle are fortifying my mind and the health of my body, I’m less susceptible to actually end up with depression because of those other aspects.” The free introductory sessions are from 6pm at Rollands Plains Hall, Monday April 16, 2018 and Wauchope Senior Citizens Centre from 6pm on Monday April 23. For more information call Desley Bailey on 0401 145 087.

Beloved pet missing By SUE PATERICK HUNDREDS of people in the Macleay Valley have been keeping a lookout for a big white and shaggy-coated Maremma dog that went missing from his home over seven weeks ago. The last positive sighting of Sam was at Verges Creek on Friday February 2. His distraught owners are offering a $1000 reward for Sam’s safe return and turned to regular and social media to help find their dog. According to owner Paul Kensington, sightings started pouring in immediately from places like Euroka, Dondingalong and Crescent Head but by the time he arrived on the scene there was never any sign of Sam. Sam was also sighted on Saturday, March 24, at the IGA carpark in Central Kempsey. “There have been so many sightings and I am 90 per cent sure the first ones were Sam,” Paul said. However, other sightings were not his dog at all. One was someone else’s Maremma dog, another was a female and one was a golden retriever. Paul is ever hopeful that Sam is out there alive and well in someone else’s paddock just guarding their flock of animals. “He’ll be terrified and missing his goats,” Paul said, especially considering the rain the valley endured last week. Sam is over 10 years old and spent eight years of his life on the Kensington’s idyllic 40-hectare property guarding their herd of Boer meat goats. So it came as a huge surprise that Sam went missing at all because he never left the farm and was devoted to his goats. He ate with them and slept with them, leading them into the shed each night.

Sam the Maremma dog has been lost for weeks and a reward his offered for his safe return “Sam then slept across the doorway, and in the morning he patrolled the boundaries before he led the goats back outside” Paul said. “When a goat was kidding Sam would lay beside it until it gave birth and wouldn’t let any other animal near it.” At first Paul was worried that his dog was bitten by a snake and then the sightings started. Being a working dog Sam was not microchipped but he was wearing a flea collar.
His breed means Sam is not like other dogs. “A Maremma won’t do what it doesn’t want to do,” Paul explained. So he fully expects no-one will be able to catch Sam. “If you see him please keep an eye on him until we can get there to catch him,” Paul asked. “And try not to scare him away.” If you see Sam please call Paul on 0406 884 904.
THE Wauchope, Laurieton and Port Macquarie branches of the Commonwealth Bank have presented $30,000 to Port Macquarie Base Hospital’s Maternity Unit and Special Care Nursery. The generous gift was made possible when staff nominated the maternity service for the bank’s Centenary Grants valued at $10,000 each. Port Macquarie Base Hospital Acting Midwifery Unit Manager Olivia Tierney thanked the Commonwealth Bank, and its Port Macquarie, Wauchope and Laurieton branches, for the generous donation. “Our Maternity Unit staff are humbled by the support provided to our patients by the CommBank Foundation’s Centenary of Giving program,” Ms Tierney said. “This extremely welcomed donation will make a huge difference.”

Unique music tells their story By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC
Husband and wife performers Renat and Hila Yusupov are bringing ‘Cello With Love’ to Port Macquarie on April 7
PORT Macquarie is in for an exceptional musical experience. ‘Cello with Love’, a unique husband and wife performance, will not only entertain, but may also inspire some patrons to take up the cello. “We include music that has never been performed in Australia before,” said Renat Yusupov, a cello virtuoso. “It’s a unique piece of music from places like Uzbekistan, Russia, Israel, Georgia, Armenia, all those republican countries that people aren’t used to hearing music from.” Renat and his wife and pianist Hila, are embarking on a New South Wales tour. Renat has been living in Australia since 1999, working as a music teacher. The couple, now based in Brisbane, believe that the music represents not only their love for one another, but their backgrounds as well. “Our story also makes our personalities,” Renat said. “My wife and I grew up in Uzbekistan, and many Australian people have never heard about this country before. “Our upbringing is also quite interesting for people to hear and the stories behind some of the pieces are about experiences like World War Two, because the music is also a reflection of survival.” Renat says that Australians are not as familiar as they should be with the cello. “I think the cello hasn’t been explored that much yet here in Australia,” he says. “I would love more people to learn to play the cello. I am an educator myself and I love to see the younger generation become interested in music. “It’s quite interesting the response from kids
when they hear the cello because they are used to instruments like the drums or electronic sounds, and when they hear our music they want to learn and hear the music more and more. “So that’s one of our goals - to help keep the younger generation interested in the cello and help them to fall in love with classical music.” The couple encourages young aspiring musicians and their parents to experience as much music in their hometown as possible. “I think the first step to having a successful career in music is to listen to music and explore music,” Renat said. Australian cello virtuoso, Renat, will join, Hila, in a delightful afternoon of popular classical cello and piano masterpieces that will include: Haydn’s Cello Concerto No. 1, Paganini’s Variations on One String on a Theme from ‘Moses in Egypt’ by Rossini, Massenet’s Meditation, works by J.S. Bach, Saint-Saens, Monti and many more. “Our music captures all generations, from very young children, to adolescent teens, to the elderly,” said Renat. “We are excited to bring our music to beautiful Port Macquarie, where we often spend weeks at a time on holiday.” Don’t miss out on seeing ‘Cello with Love’ on Saturday April 7 from 3pm-4.30pm at the Port Macquarie Presbyterian Church, 93 William St, Port Macquarie. Tickets are $27 for adults, $22 for concession, $12 for ages 12-17, and free for children aged 12 and under. For further details see www.trybooking.com or call 0417 498 502. Tickets are also available at the door one hour prior to the concert unless sold out.

Festival for locals THE inaugural Bobby Jack’s Festival is a celebration of original music and arts for all ages and will be held at Walcha Showground on April 21 from 11am - 11pm. The festival’s aim is to promote original music and performing arts in the New England area. The main stage line-up will feature Claude Hay, Goldheist, The Jug Addicts, Foundlings, Greg Windred’s Racketeers, The M Cooperation, The Grim Brothers and Caramello Cafe. All artists are local to the New England region with the exception of award winning Australian artist Claude Hay. Hailing from the Blue Mountains, Claude Hay invokes the best of stomping traditional blues, hard rock and booty-shaking funk, all delivered with slide guitar chops to burn and a vocal range to match. Festivalgoers will also enjoy performances from Bellydance Earth & Sky, Reggae Towney and The Dunghutti Dancers. A second “Get Out of Your Garage” Stage will provide a platform for local, aspiring musicians to perform their music.

THE rain finally eased up and supporters were treated to a great game of bowls last Saturday afternoon in the form of the final of the club fours championship. Initially the team of Peter Ostler, Kevin Pampling, Paul Harrison and Steve Latham got away to a good start and had built up an eight shot lead by the sixteenth end. However, on the next two ends, they dropped two ‘fours’ and the team of Bill Brooker, Peter Marsden, Phil Saville and Jeff Purdy had the score nicely evened up at nineteen all. Single shots were shared on the next two ends making it twenty all after the penultimate end. On the final end, Steve’s team scored a single shot to win the game 21 shots to 20. Also on Saturday afternoon, two preliminary club championship pairs games were played with Ken Ansley and Paul ‘Smiley’ Ireland defeating Garry Rudge and Gordon Wagner by 23 shots to 14. In the other game, twilights recruit Ian Lavender and Ian Hackney defeated Tony Gates and Jim Hopcroft by 28 shots to 8. On a lovely sunny Sunday, the club hosted the annual Dooker Eggert series of matches involving sixty-eight players from Zone 14 and the Manning. Zone 14 narrowly won the open trophy and the Manning won both the Senior and Junior events. Despite the rain, we managed to squeeze in last Wednesday afternoon’s club select triples. Best performed winners were Don Murdoch, Dennis Simpson and David Woodlands on +16 while the runners up were Scott MacKenzie, Tony Gates and Jim Hopcroft on +11. Wednesday’s twilight bowlers and Friday afternoon’s nominated pairs were not so fortunate with both games washed out. On Easter Friday afternoon we have our very popular nominated, seafood pairs, kindly sponsored by Wauchope Seafoods. This is an open event comprising two games of fifteen ends. Easter Saturday afternoon we will run a sponsored, two bowl triples event provided we get sufficient numbers. As usual, on Wednesday afternoon we have our single entry club select triples, all games starting at 1pm, names in by noon please. We also have our very sociable Wednesday twilight nominated triples which kicks off around 6pm, names in by 5pm please. On Sunday morning starting at 9.30am, the Travelling Bowlers will be running their monthly, single entry club select triples followed by the usual bbq lunch.

WHAT a contrast in the weather during the week and this weekend. Before the rain tumbled down during the week, the bowls and barbecue on Monday saw Ron Campbell, Keith Lawton and Geoff Slack collect the prize for winning rink. Paul Dewson, Anne Armstrong and Bev Ascot-Evans were the lucky losers. Then came the rain. It is a tribute to Brett and his team. The work they have put into our greens, that on Saturday, it was hard to believe that they had been under water. Gary Knox and Graham Wiggins made the most of it and were rink winners. Denis Begley and Warren Dark were lucky to lose. Mick Brennan proved too good for Ray Downes in Round 3 of Major Singles on Saturday while Vic Ley booked a spot in the finals with a win over Ross Fuller. The Minor Pairs are under way; Ken Pritchard and Jim McGill defeated Phil Innes and John McCartney; Steve Webster and Roger Hall defeated Kerry Deas and Vic Hayhurst; Ray Downes and Rob Eldridge defeated Gary Blackler and John Fuller; and Derek Wright and Bill Mahon defeated Peter Griffiths and Keith Woods.

Pirates are back
Eddy Van der Jagt wants to break as many long jump records as he can
Age is no barrier Eddy is still flying high ... and long By SUE PATERICK RUNNING fast and the feeling of flying through the air is what attracted Crescent Head’s Eddy Van der Jagt to the long jump when he was just a boy. He started Little Athletics at eight years old and never looked back. Last weekend Eddy broke his own record and the NSW long jump record in the 50-55 age group, jumping 5.82 metres. “I thought that if everything went right and I had a good day and there was a good tail wind, I’d get the record,” he said. In April Eddy hopes to break the Australian record of 6.11 metres at his next competition in Brisbane. His next milestone will be to be ranked number one in the world. When Eddy first began his athletic career 42 years ago he wasn’t that good. “I was really skinny and couldn’t run properly,” he admitted. “I was the slowest in my age group at the club, but when I turned 10 I became the fastest.” At just 11 years of age Eddy won the State triple jump and from then on he broke numerous state records. When he was 12 he seized the Australian record for triple jump and came third in the long jump. At 13 Eddy was the Australian champion for both the long and triple jump. From 14, 15 to 16 he focused on the long jump and easily beat his rivals, but at 15 he also broke the NSW triple jump record. “I was good at it and before I knew it I was winning everything,” Eddy said with modesty. “I just got really passionate about it.” Eddy was 17 years old when he jumped his personal best of 7.73 metres, but it was also a time when he began to question what he wanted to do with his life. Being an elite athlete takes time and dedication.
Eddy Van der Jagt in action You have to eat healthy food with lots of protein, keep your weight low and train hard. So back then Eddy asked himself if all this sacrifice was worth it. “I had to decide if I wanted to go to the Olympic Games or just have a normal life and work and go surfing.” he said. “You have to be dedicated to be an athlete because there isn’t much money in it unless you’re really good.” So Eddy gave up long jumping for a simple life in the bush in the Macleay Valley, running his own business and surfing with his mates. While he grew up in Sydney, Eddy has lived in the valley for over 20 years and loves the beach, the bush and its peace and quiet. He first visited Crescent Head for a holiday in his twenties and knew that was where he wanted to be. It took eight years to get there because he had
to learn a trade so he could start a business and still have plenty of time to go surfing. At 42 Eddy took up the long jump again and likened doing a good jump to catching a good wave. Although, he admits some sponsorship would be nice to help out with expenses. Eddy jumps a personal best of around 5.77 metres these days and his main focus is to break records. When he entered the Masters Games in the 45 to 50 age group, Eddy broke the NSW long jump record, the NSW country record and the Pan Pacific Masters Games record. For Eddy, a highlight of his career was coaching Savannah Walker from South West Rocks in the long jump. Under his tutelage Savannah won the State Championship. “That was a real goal to coach someone to achieve that,” Eddy said. “Savannah worked hard and was very dedicated.” When Eddy was a child his Dad coached him and it really helped. These days Eddy’s lovely wife, Jana, is his coach and he has taken on her advice, which has helped him start winning again. His advice to other athletes just starting out is to keep fit and keep focused. “If you want to do well you have to eat right and train,” Eddy said. “I’m 50 years old and I’m still lean, strong and fast.” At the Masters Games he has seen people competing who are over 70 years old. One fellow competitor really inspired Eddy. “This guy was 70 and was brilliant; fit, strong and lean” he said. “So I thought well even if I don’t end up breaking records, I’ll be really fit.” For Eddy, running fast and flying through the air will never lose its appeal. “You just feel so free,” he said.
THE Pirates of Penzance hit the deck again in 2018 for their 21st and final tour, which will take in five Australian states. This fast-paced and beautifully sung production tours with a full set and costumes, but beware, in 2018 it will contain nuts and Donald Trump additives! The stellar cast is led by musical theatre star Philip Gould as the swashbuckling Pirate King, veteran comic baritone Brian Hannan as the Major General and the Police Sergeant, international soprano Alison Jones as Mabel, Opera Australia mezzo soprano Caroline Vercoe as Ruth and Chris McKenna as Frederic, with musical direction by Dominic Woodhead on piano. Glasshouse audiences have loved Promac Productions’ Gilbert and Sullivan shows over many years now and this new imagining of the classic musical is a ‘must see’. The first-ever premiere of Pirates of Penzance Gilbert & Sullivan was in December 1879 and it remains as funny and entertaining as it was nearly 140 years ago! You will be tapping your toes and singing along to Policeman’s Lot is Not a Happy One, I am The Pirate King, The Modern Major General and of course the stunning Poor Wandering One. This is a true family musical comedy, with The Pirates clashing swords and trading barbs. So join us in saying farewell to The Pirates as they sail off into the sunset, but not before providing the whole family with a truly great time in our theatre. Pirates of Penzance will be at the Glasshouse on Sunday April 8, 4pm Tickets: adult $54.90, Member $44.90, Concession $49.90, group 6+ $49.90, Under 25 $39.90 Book: www.glasshouse.org.au or call 6581 8888 or drop into the Glasshouse Box Office.

footytips
Only two still unbeaten OK, a few of the 2018 fairytale starts ended last weekend, with losses to the Knights, Panthers and Tigers. The positive for the competition is all three teams have genuine top eight credentials so 2018 will continue to be interesting in the NRL. Will be interesting to see if the Dragons and Warriors can keep their winning runs alive. Let’s tip some winners: Cowboys v Panthers (Thursday, March 29, 7.05pm, 1300SMILES Stadium, Townsville): The loss of Nathan Cleary is a big blow for the Panthers, while the Cowboys should welcome back Lachlan Coote. There is no doubt the Cows were flat against Melbourne last weekend however they are back home and should be mentally much better. The Panthers have started well and were just pipped by the Dogs last weekend. Home advantage the key. Your Local independent tips: Cowboys Rabbitohs v Bulldogs (Friday, March 30, 3.10pm, ANZ Stadium, Sydney): OK, so where do you place the Rabbits? Two ordinary games and then they give Manly a touch-up. There is even a chance that the injured Adam Reynolds may appear. We all knew the Dogs would come back into better form and they did last weekend. However the mail is very strong that South Sydney are keen to lose the ‘inconsistent’ tag. Let’s give them the benefit of the doubt. Your Local independent tips: Rabbitohs Sharks v Storm (Friday, March 30, 7.05pm, Southern Cross Group Stadium, Cronulla): Both these
teams had good wins last weekend. The Sharks looked much crisper in their win over the Eels and this weekend should see the return of the very classy Matt Moylan. They are also at home. The game comes down to the mental approach of Melbourne. They would have been ‘up’ for their home clash and decisive win over the Cows last weekend. But they will need to be ‘up’ again. Still hard to tip against them. Your Local independent tips: Storm Roosters v Warriors (Saturday, March 31, 4.30pm, Allianz Stadium, Sydney): Well, what about the Warriors? Three from three! They are putting it to all those who had them finishing last in 2018. However they only have themselves to blame for that prediction. Meanwhile the Roosters are looking very good with Cooper Cronk and ended the Newcastle dream run last weekend. The bookies have the Roosters as massive early favourites - $1.34 to $3.30. Hard to go against winning form, but harder to turn your back on the ‘big money’. Your Local independent tips: Roosters Sea Eagles v Raiders (Saturday, March 31, 6.35pm, Lottoland, Sydney): One of the constants in sport is if there are problems off the field, they will hurt on-field performances. The Sea Eagles are in the wars over the salary cap and that showed last weekend. That vibe will still be going through the club. They also come up against a Raiders side that is 0-3 and need to win. It’s a home game for Manly, but they will need more than that this Saturday.
Sharon Griffiths
Your Local independent tips: Raiders Dragons v Knights (Sunday, April 1, 4.10pm, WIN Stadium, Wollongong): Plenty of rivalry between these two, so will be a top clash. The Dragons are the one team who good judges are saying deserve their early season standing. They showed an ordinary Titans outfit no mercy last weekend. Their attack has genuine class and their defence is brutal. The Knights hit a Rooster wall last weekend. They will be further up the ladder this year, but another away game won’t help their cause. Your Local independent tips: Dragons Broncos v Titans (Sunday, April 1, 6.30pm, Suncorp Stadium, Brisbane): The Broncos are coming off a tough win over the Wests Tigers. Great win, but it came at a physical and mental cost. They should beat the Titans, whose defence has been woeful on occasions this season. However two elements come into play. How fatigued are the Broncos? And also the Titans always rise for this game. The Gold Coast do have a good roster, especially their pack. If they start playing for each other they can do well this season. However recent form points to a home win for the Broncos. Your Local independent tips: Broncos Wests Tigers v Eels (Monday, April 2, 4pm, ANZ Stadium, Sydney): Hard to go past the Tigers who have been a revelation this season. They almost made it three from three last weekend before falling to the Broncos 9-7 in extra time. The most positive aspect of the Tigers is
