PORT Macquarie is a step closer to offering a basic human right to our homeless. The instigators of Orange Sky Laundry, a service that allows homeless people to clean and dry their clothes, recently outlined what they do to a gathering at Port City Bowling Club, pictured above Lucas Patchett and Nicholas Marchesi were named 2016 Young Australians of the Year for their world-first, free mobile laundry vans. Their initiative, which began in 2014 with one laundry van called Sudsy, is named after the song

Orange Sky by Alexi Murdoch. The lyrics say: “I had a dream I stood beneath an orange sky with my brother and sister standing by.” The interpretation, along with the rest of the lyrics, is that the salvation of others lies in our love. “The entire message of the song is about helping your brothers and sisters,” Nic says. “These values are imperative to us and central to our project.” It is this that makes Orange Sky Laundry so amazing Lucas and Nic say. • Continued Page 3

Heroines of the Hastings organiser with 2016 winners Kelly Lamb, Gemma Morley, Genna Johnson, Rhonda Radley and Alex GlenHolmes and Port Macquarie MP Leslie Williams. The community is asked to nominate women who promote unity for a 2017 award.
Who is your heroine? By NIKALA SIM

YOU have a week to nominate the women you believe make unity a reality in the Hastings. The annual Hastings Heroines awards, a collaboration between the Hastings Women’s Business Network (HWBN) and Port Macquarie MP Leslie Williams, recognise the unsung heroines of our local region as part of the celebration of International Women’s Day on March 8. This year the international day encourages everyone to play a part in driving better outcomes for women and ‘Be Bold for Change’. This is in reaction to the World Economic Forum prediction that the gender gap will not close until 2186. HBWN President Kelly King invites the community to nominate women who advocate, support and connect, lead and empower others to promote unity. The sixth International Women’s Day award will include a new category, Ms Williams said. The MP said she is delighted that the Young Hastings Heroine category will honour women under 21 years for the difference they make. “There are many young women deserving of recognition for their outstanding contribution to our local community,” said awards partner Ms King. ground-breaking action that truly drives the greatest change for women. This need not be far-reaching but could be a woman who is a leader within her own sphere of influence, who takes bold, pragmatic action to bring about gender equality. An example of this is, 2015 Australian of the Year and Pride of Australia National Courage Medal recipient, Rosie Batty who will speak at the International Women’s Day Hastings Heroines event. Rosie Batty is a leader in the crusade against domestic violence and turned her personal tragedy into a fight to help others, Ms King said. “Rosie’s name has become synonymous with the words courage and resilience. “Only hours after her son’s life was tragically taken, Rosie gave voice to many thousands of victims of domestic violence who had until then

remained unheard. “Now a tireless campaigner, Rosie is the CEO of The Luke Batty Foundation and runs the Never Alone Campaign, asking all Australians to stand with her and beside all victims of family violence.” The International Women’s Day Hastings Heroines fundraising breakfast will be held at Panthers Port Macquarie on March 8 between 6.45am and 9am. Tickets include a hot breakfast, fruit, tea and coffee and the opportunity to win some amazing prizes. The breakfast last year saw more than 180 people help raise $9500 for the Port Macquarie Hastings Domestic and Family Violence Specialist Service, which will again receive the proceeds. Nominations for a Hastings Heroine award close Friday, February 10, and will be evaluated by a panel of judges, including event founders Kelly Lamb and MP Leslie Williams, and a representative of the Port Macquarie Hastings Domestic and Family Violence Specialist Support Service. Go to www.hbwn.com.au to book your ticket, purchase a raffle book or Rosie Batty’s ‘A Mother’s Story’, and pledge your donation to the worthy cause of domestic violence prevention.

• From Page 1 The provision of a laundry service for homeless is uplifting, but the real power lies in the conversation that takes place during the wash cycle, they say. The duo spoke in Port Macquarie in support of local not-for-profit Make a Difference founded by MacKillop College teacher Erin Denham. The organisation is raising funds to establish an Orange Sky Laundry van and provide the free service to homeless people from Taree to Kempsey. “Once we get a van in this area it will be our most remote community we work in,” Nic says. “And what we unfortunately know is there are homeless friends in the Port Macquarie area that need access to a really basic human right of clean clothes and conversation.” Orange Sky Laundry representative Alek Jacoby says for him the amazing thing is the conversations that take place while sitting on one of the van’s six orange chairs. “By pushing a button on a washing machine you are left one hour to do nothing,” Alek says. “So we sit around on six orange chairs and have a chat to our friends in an environment where they feel comfortable. “This can lead to some really great relationships and have an amazing impact. “Really it comes down to connecting people back to the community because homelessness can be a really isolating lifestyle.” One in 200 people across Australia are homeless on any given night so a van on the Mid North Coast has the potential to assist hundreds of people. MacKillop College student Alannah Grose was just one of many young people in the crowd that listened to Lucas and Nic’s story. The 17-year-old says she was blown-away by the number of people affected by homelessness. “I really want to help out in the community,” Alannah says. “I really want to make a difference and help people out who are in need.” Make a Difference intends to partner with like-minded organisations once its Orange Sky Laundry van becomes a reality. This will strengthen the services provided to the homeless, Erin says. One such service is the St Thomas Anglican Church soup kitchen run by Robyn and Bruce Cohen. The 80 or so people who attend the soup kitchen come from all walks of life and some only have the clothes they are in, Robyn says. Her husband of 53 years, Bruce, says the soup kitchen offers a free doctor, serves morning tea, a three-course meal, free donuts, bread, fruit and vegetables and clothing. “To have the Orange Sky Laundry with us it would be fantastic – it would just add to the whole thing. It is wonderful.” The soup kitchen run by Catholic Sister Marjorie sees around 150 people fed. Clean energy best bet for safe future LAST year was the third year in a row that global heat records were surpassed. It’s a long-term trend of recordbreaking heat - a trend that can’t be denied or ignored. The impacts of climate change are coming sooner and with more ferocity. Carbon emissions are the major factor and will continue to drive rising heat. Unless we take action to reduce fossil fuel emissions we’re going to see more climate change impacts such as severe coral bleaching in the Great Barrier Reef, loss of vital kelp forests in WA, mass deaths of oysters and abalone around Tasmania, the death of 10,000 hectares of mangroves across
Push for Republic THE Australian Republic Movement (ARM) has released a controversial new TV ad for Australia Day to highlight the absurdity of having the British monarch as Australia’s head of state. The Australia Day production by leading Australian creative advertising agency McCann has Australians from all backgrounds reciting the words to
northern Australia, and more frequent and severe droughts, heat waves and storms, as well as human health and economic consequences. Australia should do its part to stop global warming. During the election Prime Minister Turnbull said there would be no public funding for Adani’s controversial coal mine, so why has the Turnbull government now given provisional approval for handing out $1billion of taxpayers money to build a rail line to the Carmichael mine,as well as backing $100 billion target for expanding Australia’s coal industry? It’s beyond belief that at a time when the world is moving to reduce emissions, any sensible government would consider allowing the world’s
largest coal mine which, when burnt, will pump out 4.6 billion tonnes of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere and thwart our chances of keeping global warming under two degrees. Taxpayers’ money should be invested in renewable energy - not propping up a billionaire’s project that could destroy the Great Barrier Reef, especially in light of Adani’s history of environmental destruction, corruption and tax evasion. Far right conservative politicians are hijacking all levels of government. They’re blocking tree clearing laws (tree clearing is now the fastest rising source of emissions in Australia), falsely attacking clean energy at every opportunity and fast tracking Adani’s mega mine and the mega port on the
reef coast. It is reckless and irresponsible to go on burning fossil fuels. Green energy is breaking new records and offering reasons for hope. Last year renewable energy accounted for more than half of new power generation worldwide. The cost of solar power has plummeted 75 per cent in the past five years and continues to fall. Sinking money into fossil fuels is a dead bet, clean energy is the best, cheapest and most effective way towards a safe future. We need to change course now and chart a better way for humanity and solve the climate crisis. Peter Van Haeff Bellbrook
the British national anthem God Save the Queen, which was the Australian national anthem until 1984 when it was replaced by Advance Australia Fair. The ad points out that it doesn’t sound right for modern Australians to be singing “long may she reign over us”, just as it doesn’t seem right that Australia has an unelected monarch as our head of state. The TV ad is the centerpiece of the ARM’s new brand
launch and reinvigorated campaign for an Australian head of state. As part of this campaign, the ARM is inviting Australians to declare their own independence by pledging allegiance to Australia and its people rather than the British monarch. Remarkably, our federal politicians and Australian Defence Force personnel must still pledge their allegiance to the Queen. The alternative pledge says “I want
Australia’s Head of State to represent Australia’s interests above all others”. This is Australia. And our national head of state should be an Australian. There’s no credible argument against that. We respect the Queen and we’d love to have her over for a cuppa to oversee the transition to an Australian republic with an Australian as our head of state. Peter Fitzsimons ARM National Chair

TO the Conservatorium MNC for working so hard to create a musical environment and opportunities for both young and old throughout the Hastings and Mid North Coast Region. They get little to no financial support from the Dept of Education despite being announced officially as the 18th Regional Conservatorium in NSW by the Minister in 2016. OMG! What a week! First up; please accept my most humble apologies… We had a major communication breakdown and last week’s edition was not delivered until a day late. Unfortunately, there is nothing I can do to rectify the situation…just put my hand up and say “we stuffed up!” Thanks to the flood of readers who alerted me to the situation and I hope you managed to find a copy once they hit the streets… The silver lining? Discovering just how loyal the community support is for Your Local Independent! Once again, I’m absolutely blown away. Although we spent the best part of Thursday and Friday fielding 100’s of calls from readers wanting their copy; about 95 per cent of the calls were from genuinely concerned readers…making sure we are OK. Thank you! Many of you are aware that I have a few personal issues going on; which I try to separate from business. However, just to address the rumours… my husband and I have separated; he has resigned from the business and I’m flying solo. Your Local Independent is not, has not and will not be closing anytime soon! In the meantime – can you do me a favour and let the gossip mongers know the truth? Thanks in advance…until next week!

‘Tri’ focus on Trial Bay By LIZZIE STIPZEVIC ATHLETES from across Australia are warming up for the Trial Bay Triathlon, to be held in just over a week’s time. The triathlon, which is based across South West Rocks, is in its 28th year and isn’t slowing down. “It has a lot of history behind it,” said Tracy Walker, race secretary of Trial Bay Triathlon. “Peter Needs has organized it since the beginning and has done a fantastic job all these years. It’s an amazing achievement and he is very dedicated.” There is a maximum of 500 individuals and 60 teams in the popular race, and it will fill up fast says Tracy. “Competitors come from all over,” Tracy said. “We get quite a few from Queensland and we’ve even had some from overseas. “This year we actually have a disabled team entering and we are so proud of them for giving it a go. They will have their support people involved, but I think it’s just fantastic that we’ve got a team entered that’s prepared to try.” The event has attracted many big name athletes over the years, including three-time Olympian, Emma Moffatt. “Because we are one of the smaller events around quite often the top athletes use us as a training grounds for some of the bigger events,” said Tracy. “Emma competed in the Milo junior races as a kid.” On race day competitors start at the base of the historic Trial Bay Gaol and then travel through a scenic and unique course. “It certainly covers a vast terrain,” said Tracy. “You’ve got a rocky track, which then leads onto roads and footpaths, and then onto the beach heading back to the finish line. It’s something different that you wouldn’t find in most other events around that are mainly on the
Three-time Olympian Emma Moffatt is one of may top names who have competed in the historic Trial Bay Triathlon road.” Spectators and supporters are also in for a treat as they can follow the course right around, and as for parking, it is suggested to park at the top of the gaol car park or near the kiosk. “Trial Bay is out at Arakoon which is our eastern most suburb,” Tracy said. “It’s up on a beautiful area, which includes the Trial Bay Gaol and its run by the national park, who we are working very closely with to get the event organized.” The Trial Bay Triathlon will take place on Saturday and Sunday, February 11 and 12.
Saturday, February 11 will include five junior races with the first starting at 12pm and will be categorized by age. The races are expected to finish at 4.30pm, followed by a presentation at 5pm. to educate new mums on feeding By NIKALA SIM BREASTFEEDING is a learned skill and one which benefits from demonstration. Australian Breastfeeding Association Hastings Group (ABA) will hold an information session for new and expectant parents to foster the knowledge and confidence needed to successfully breastfeed. Group leader Alissa Powell said that while breastfeeding is natural, it doesn’t always come naturally. “There are some basic skills that make breastfeeding efficient and successful and these are what we demonstrate during the workshop,” she said. “Proper attachment is vital to prevent soreness in the mother and provide an efficient feed to the baby. “And support is fundamental. “Many women don’t have that from their mums because they didn’t breastfeed, so spending time with other women means you get to see breastfeeding at all its different stages.” The information session will cover the basics of physiology, the history and cultural context of breastfeeding, positioning and attachment and common issues that mums might run into. These issues could be baby-related or related to the skill of breastfeeding, newlytrained Breastfeeding Education Counsellor Belynda Carrall said. “That breastfeeding is a learned skill is one of the key tenets of ABA. “The young mum experienced mastitis, a common but painful condition, whilst feeding her first child Patrick, who is now a ‘wonderfully busy’ two-year-old. “I had a few challenges but with persistence and support was able to continue breastfeeding.” The Breastfeeding Education Session is open to pregnant couples, singles, and families

THE COWPER REPORT With Luke Hartsuyker
Federal Member for Cowper
IT’S a new school year and kids in the North Coast area are heading back to the grind, but for those in preschool the education journey is just starting. The Federal Government has introduced a program that will make that journey even more fruitful by allowing children to learn another language while they are still young. The Government’s Early Learning Languages Australia (ELLA) program allows preschool children to learn one of seven languages – Chinese (Mandarin), Japanese, Indonesian, Spanish, Italian, Arabic or French – using tablet apps and fun, play-based learning. Preschools can choose a language that aligns with the curriculum of their local primary school to support the ongoing development of language skills. It’s important for our North Coast kids to have access to these kind of learning tools so that they have the skills to compete in a world economy against kids in other countries who can sometimes speak three or more languages. After a successful two-year trial the Government has invested $15.7 million over two years to make the ELLA program available to preschools across the country. Communities from disadvantaged areas will not miss out either, with the Government providing funding for 1000 preschools ($500 each) to purchase devices. More than 1000 preschool services have already applied for ELLA in 2017 and I encourage others to take advantage of this unique educational opportunity. Learning a language can do so many things for a child, not only does it broaden their skill base later in life, but it also helps them with their own English skills and improves their reason and logic. The apps have been designed so that there is no need for the educators to have mastered the language being taught. In fact, educators and children collaborate and learn together. The program is expanding across the country in 2017 and we’re expecting more than 30,000 children to take part but time is running out to apply, so I want to make sure the kids in our area aren’t left behind. I’m urging preschools and child care centres to head to www.ella.edu. au to sign up. Applications close on 26 February 2017 at 5pm (AEST). For more information and to submit an application, visit www.ella.edu.au

Melbourne talent SCNDL - Tom Grant, left, and Adam Amuso – will headline the next instalment of the Intensive Series
More Intensive talent By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC
PORT Macquarie is in for an Intensive night of partying this weekend. The Intensive Series has become iconic locally for its seasonal parties and international entertainment. This weekend’s event is no different with Melbourne talent SCNDL, best known for their remix of Will Sparks’ hit ‘Ah Yeah So What’ which skyrocketed up the Beatport charts and came in ninth on Beatport’s list of top selling Electro House tunes for 2015. However, SCNDL aren’t the only ones who have had huge success in the party biz. “We’ve been getting 700 or 800 people to each event,” said Lisa Willows from RAWR
Music PR. “The last one was Joel Fletcher who does ‘Let me see your hips swing’ and it was massive. “We are now bringing them more frequently and people really want to play here. “This is our 8th one and this year we will be having 12 Intensive Series parties, there’s a real market for it, people love it.” The Intensive Series is also known for its incredible local talent and supporting SCNDL this weekend is local acts DJ Brazza, Jimmy Laing, Jhett, J-Uni, Jorde, Elypisis, and J-Staines. Lisa says this event will be a black and white party theme, so it is encouraged to dress in black and white. The venue will also be decked out in a candy theme with a candy buffet and a Zooper
Dooper stand. “People can forget their stresses and just dance their worries away. We transform the Macca into a nightclub so they get that city night club feel in a regional area.” The Intensive Series featuring SCNDL will take place on Saturday, February 4, from 9pm at the Port Macquarie Hotel. This event is 18+ only. Past Intensive Series events has brought in crowds and lines flooding down Horton Street, so to avoid the queue on the night, pre sale tickets will be available online and includes VIP entry, so no time will be wasted waiting in queue. Tickets and ticket prices are available online at http://tickets.oztix.com.au/?Event=70054
WITH ever-increasing demand for courses in Port Macquarie, Charles Sturt University (CSU) is due to open a residential facility for 250 students for the beginning of Session One in February, 2018. Located next to the Port Macquarie campus, three accommodation buildings will initially provide 112 rooms that include a bedroom with desk and ensuite bathroom for each student, communal lounge rooms and kitchens, and access to student recreational areas in a separate building. Head of CSU in Port Macquarie, Professor Heather Cavanagh, said the University was excited to be able to offer secure accommodation for students enrolled in various degrees at Port Macquarie including science, health, paramedic, business and social welfare. CSU will lease the facility from Sydneybased Chase Property Investments, which is working with commercial builder Intelligent Building Systems International, from Brisbane, to complete the planned facility which is due to total 250 beds by February, 2018. The next academic session for students attending the Port Macquarie campus is due to commence with Orientation Week from Monday, February 20
Stars give healthy option FEDERAL Member for Cowper Luke Hartsuyker has thrown his support behind a new awareness campaign designed to inform people about the Health Star Rating system. The Health Star Rating (HSR) system provides a quick, easy, standard way to compare similarly packaged foods. “The system scores the nutritional profile of packaged food and assigns it a rating from a ½ star to 5 stars for healthier options. Stars are calculated by assessing the amount of energy, saturated fat, sugars, sodium, fruit, vegetable, nut and legume content, as well as dietary fibre and protein,” Mr Hartsuyker said. “It is a great tool for the shoppers and consumers of Cowper to help them make more informed choices.”

Fund supports GAL Aboriginal arts
ALISON FAZZOLARI Mid Coast Futsal
How long have you lived in or around the Hastings/Macleay? 30 years. What do you love most about the Hastings/ Macleay? The mixture of farming and beaches so close together. The climate and schools.
FUNDING open for local Aboriginal arts projects: Local Aboriginal artists and arts organisations are now invited to apply for NSW Government funding to support local projects. The NSW Aboriginal Regional Arts Fund is for projects in remote and regional NSW that encourage Aboriginal people to explore and express their cultural identities. I encourage all Aboriginal artists and arts organisations to apply for this funding which will allow them to share their stories and skills with their communities. This is well-targeted support to build the skills, capacity and professional development of Aboriginal artists and arts organisations as well as create a diversity of stories and contemporary artworks which speak to local communities. The NSW Aboriginal Regional Arts Fund offers up to $5000 for individual professional artists and up to $20,000 for organisations. The NSW Government is proud to support a vibrant, distinctive and contemporary Aboriginal arts and culture across NSW. Applications close on February 27. For more information go to www.arts.nsw.gov.au or contact my office on 6584 0977. Funding for community projects to combat local crime:
STATE MATTERS
With Leslie Williams State Member for Port Macquarie
Community groups, businesses and councils with ideas to reduce criminal and anti-social behaviour are being urged to come forward and apply for up to $250,000 in NSW Government funding through the NSW Community Safety Fund. Crime is a social and financial burden that the NSW Government is committed to reducing to boost local safety and pride. We know there is always more that can be done to stamp out crime in our towns and suburbs and we are working with the community to identify opportunities. The program, which will see $10 million invested over four years, has already helped make local crime reduction ideas a reality. Further information including program guidelines and application information: http:// www.crimeprevention.nsw.gov.au/
Community funding FEDERAL Member for Cowper Luke Hartsuyker is encouraging community groups and local councils to apply for funding under the Building Better Regions Fund. “The funding under the Building Better Regions Fund (BBRF) is available for community and infrastructure projects on the North Coast and I hope those eligible in our area apply,” he said. “The BBRF will give communities the opportunity to think outside the square and show us the types of investments they believe will strengthen their local community and create jobs.” Minister for Regional Development Fiona Nash said the fund is dedicated purely as an investment in opportunities across rural, regional and remote Australia. “The Coalition Government’s BBRF is designed to invest in projects that will create the kinds of regional communities that our children and grandchildren want to either stay in or come back to,” Minister Nash said. Mr Hartsuyker said applications will be assessed in three categories depending on the size of the project – so small community projects are not competing against huge projects worth tens of millions. “The North Coast is our local community and we want to invest in the infrastructure, events and initiatives that we know will make a difference to our region.,” he said. Applications close on February 28, 2017 for the Infrastructure Projects Stream and March 31, 2017 for the Community Investments Stream. To find out more visit www.business.gov.au/bbrf
Thrown about willy-nilly against its will
Where do you work and what do you love about your work? I am the operations manager at Mid Coast Futsal. Seeing the children enjoy being taught new skills and enjoying Futsal. What do you like least about your work? Sitting at the computer doing necessary paperwork. How do you start your day? Rise at 7am, some yoga exercises, cup of tea with honey, a bowl of cereal and off to coach at a school. What do you do in your spare time? Spare time!! Horses - we have been breeding over the past five years with some measured success. Music - I don’t get to pick up the guitar much nowadays. And of course - grandchildren. What is the achievement you are most proud of? Having my three children - two of them needing open-heart surgery to survive. Winning the Nationals in 2005 (as coach) and receiving a Commonwealth Sporting Achievement Award. Starting my own Futsal Community-based business.
SOME of us have walked into a room over the years and thought:“I don’t believe a person could live under these conditions”. I have vivid memories of a newspaperman – I won’t say who he is. Years ago our Federal Member of Parliament walked into his office just to see for himself the mess in the office. The Federal Member said something like;“I didn’t believe it could be so bad, but now I believe it”. This newspaperman was a hoarder. He couldn’t throw anything away, because he might need it some day. I thought about ‘willy-nilly’ when I thought about that newspaperman. He would throw things on the floor. We would walk over piles of newspapers just to reach his desk. In time we all accepted that this was normal. If he had cleaned his office we would probably say “is he sick?” The Federal politician and the newspaperman are still alive. That is why I had better not name them. ‘Willy-nilly’ is an expression I hear occasionally, usually meaning something like “in a disorganised fashion” or “it will do for the time being and I will fix it later”. The original meaning was something like “against the will of the person involved”. It goes back a long way.
my
LAURIE BARBER
In 1608 Thomas Middleton wrote in Trick to Catch Old One: “furnish me some money wille nille”. He was seeking money “in spite of my teeth”. If you can imagine a bushranger of old holding up a stagecoach and demanding “hand me your money” you might be inclined to do as he says “willy-nilly”. It comes from a contraction of “will I nill I”, or perhaps will I or won’t I. In almost every case you decide you had better do as demanded of you, whether you want to or not. My big dictionary included a person’s idea of “carrying her off and marrying her willy nilly at Gretna Green”. I presume he didn’t go on with the idea. Gretna Green is a place somewhere between England and Scotland where marriages could be arranged in a hurry. I went there with my wife once, but we were already married, so it
was a wasted trip. The other side of willy-nilly is the expression we hear often. This refers to something that happens, whether we want it to or not. It has nothing to do with some ribald letters I have received. I won’t tell you about them. Shakespeare had a go at it also in a few places. In The Taming of the Shrew Petruchio says to Katharina: “Thus in plain terms: your father hath consented That you shall be my wife; your dowry ‘greed on; And, will you, nill you, I will marry you.” He is saying that he will marry her, whether she likes it or not. Other authors have referred to willy-nilly in one form or another but generally the meaning has been “whether you like it or not”. Incidentally, as author Craig Carver details, nill has been allied to ne, which has gone out of fashion but can still be seen in words such as never and neither. Willy-nilly can almost be the same as shillyshally. In Sir Walter Besant’s novel The Orange Girl, written in 1898, he covers both expressions with: “Let us have no more shilly shally, willy nilly talk”. As for those ribald letters, you will have to read about them somewhere else. lauriebarber.com; lbword@midcoast.com.au.

Call for independent analysis
IN 2016, as part of the Fit For The Future reform of Local Government, the NSW State Government brought forward a range of initiatives to bring much-needed support and refinement to the local government sector. Premier Mike Baird and his coalition government dared to go where previous governments hadn’t. And for good reason. There was much opposition to the Fit For The Future process at the time of its roll-out and we are still seeing some of the fallout today, more than three years after the process began. Having spent a significant amount of time involved with local government myself, it was clear to me that local government was in a spot of bother and certainly needed the leadership, reform and change to enable it serve the community more effectively and efficiently. It was known quite early in the piece that Port Macquarie-Hastings Council was not in line for a merger with another council. Councils were asked to put forward a ‘Plan’ that required them to show how they would meet efficiency, financial management and productivity targets as set by the State Government, in aid of showing how it would be sustainable or Fit For The Future. Our council certainly did put forward a ‘Plan’, of sorts. This is the one that included the 52.4 per cent rate increases. It was clear that this plan was never going to work for the community and I genuinely felt that we’d missed a massive opportunity to critically look at improvement measures for the organisation, rather than just taking the easy road to raise rates to cover inefficiencies within current operations. Part of my desire in becoming a councillor was to see improvement, better governance, better financial management and delivery of key infrastructure to keep up with the growth of the area. It was clear to me that our council needed

an extra set of eyes to look over what was, and is, still happening with respect to governance and financial matters in particular. The Audit Office of NSW is a well respected organisation that provides the NSW Government with independent reporting on Financial and Performance management of a large number of government agencies, including Local Government. Having an arms-length independent body audit at an organisations’ governance, overall performance and financial management is a sure-fire way to ensure the foundations of the organisation are solid and also shows a level of pro-activity in ensuring continuous improvement. This is, of course, once the issues have been highlighted and a plan to remedy those is implemented. Having an independent mechanism available to cast a critical eye over the management and functions of council is certainly a step in the right direction and I take my hat off to the Baird Government for the leadership in making this a possibility. I have felt that at times, the real issues of our local council have been pushed to the side in favour of carefully crafting a positive narrative that everything is sweet with council and there’s nothing to see - so move along. Unfortunately, not all is sweet. As a community we can see this and have not fallen for the spin and suggestion otherwise and if the letter and messages I receive on a weekly basis are any gauge, the natives are becoming very

restless. To labour the point, there have been significant cost-blowouts on even some of the smallest of projects let alone key infrastructure projects in recent years with examples like the Stingray Creek Bridge, Ocean Drive duplication and a toilet block which was once budgeted at $220,000 reportedly costing more than $600,000 once completed. And very importantly, the output of the current council major project delivery has all but stalled in comparison to the revenue that has been syphoned from the ratepayers and other levels of government and stored in investment accounts. At December 2016, Port Macquarie Hastings council had amassed nearly a quarter of a billion dollars in cash ($226,000,000) which it holds in investment accounts. This is not council’s money, it is ratepayers’, taxpayers’ and community funds which need to be managed in a fiscally responsible way for the benefit of the broader community and local economy. Along with council’s ‘Plan’ as submitted as part of the Fit For The Future reforms that included the massive rate increases another critical element can be found which further highlights how sad the state of affairs currently are. This element is the organisation-wide ‘Service Review’ process. The Service Review was effectively started back in 2012/13 and was meant to cast a critical eye over the organisation and enable efficiency gains and continuously improve the organisation. Early in the piece I held huge hopes for the Service Review process and genuinely engaged and put forward much support and ideas to assist the process. Unfortunately, and after much circling and navel gazing, the project has fallen flat and left the ratepayers more than $1 million dollars shorter in the pocket for the experience. There was much information collected from a small but very talented team of council staff and catalogued in the form of data reports which very
clearly highlighted council’s performance and shortcomings in every aspect of the operations. This work was some of the best reporting and data collection I have ever seen in my career to date. Unfortunately, these reports highlighted some significant shortcomings of the organisation so they were effectively shelved and hidden from the community view. It is very fair to say that the last council had a massive opportunity to improve its overall performance and set it on a pathway to actually becoming fit for the future. For me it was a very difficult decision to not contest the last election but I genuinely felt that I could be more effective working toward fundamental change from the outside. I don’t expect to be very much liked for my critical view of the Port Macquarie-Hastings Council through my public comments on matters, but it is important for the community to have a counter, or balanced, opinion on the state of play. More so than ever, council needs an independent analysis of its financial management, its governance and decision making and most certainly of its capital works and project delivery. The Auditor General’s office is the perfect mechanism to undertake this independent review and now anyone in our community can request the service by simply contacting the NSW Audit Office via www.audit.nsw.gov.au What would be much more beneficial to the community would be to see the councillors and mayor call for such a review off their own bat. By the councillors stepping up and taking control of the current state of play and actually addressing the fundamental delivery issues would show courage, leadership and most likely show the community that they do have the community interest at heart.

World keeps changing so you have to move with it Sponsored by SkillsLink Training - your community college.
LIFELONG learning is a phrase used a lot, but it now means much more than just “keep learning”. It also means “keep changing yourself because the world is changing around you.” The biggest demand in workplaces now is for “hybrid skills”, such as combining data analysis and data visualisation, or problem-solving and design-thinking to apply to any situation. The Community college is focusing strongly this year on Lifelong Reskilling as an expectation for everyone. Adults need to relearn how to learn, and this can be scary once you’re set in your ways. But rather than panicking and hiding our heads in the sand, the best thing is to come to some sessions where we’ll help you discover your own preferred learning style. We each have one unique to each of us. Vocational Education & Training (VET) in one discipline for life is no longer useful, and people need to be able to switch focus regularly, for example from technical issues to customer service issues. Forget about planning everything out first and then proceeding, the new way forward in business is to just “build the new prototype product or service as you go along, changing it as things unfold; then test it, and then plan for more expanded marketing”. Today’s basic skills are things like Creativity, Empathy, Group Dynamics and Problem-solving between People. These are things that computers can’t do so well, yet. High Social Skills are extremely valuable in the workplace, combined with Curiosity and learning about your own Learning Approaches, so you don’t wear yourself out using the wrong style of learning for you. Call in and find out more at 77 Hastings River Drive, at the bottom of Clifton Drive, or ring 6583 7288 and visit our website on www. skillslinktraining.com.au to see all our other programs and courses.
SkillsLink trainers Rene Miles and Chris Whitton will teach seniors to become tech savvy with 24 free workshops at the Port Macquarie Library
Tech workshops helping seniors SENIORS have no excuse not to be tech savvy, thanks to a host of free workshops. The Tech Savvy Seniors program will be delivered through a partnership between SkillsLink (Port Macquarie Community College) and the Port Macquarie Library between February and June. The first workshops on February 6 and 10 focus on the use of tablets - small portable computers. Trainers Rene Miles and Chis Whitton say the workshops teach the basics of using these devices. “We ask people to bring along their tablet and learn about apps and icons, and a fair bit of what is not a good thing to do,” Chris says. “People get tied up in knots sometimes with just unfamiliarity with computers generally. “During the workshops we take questions and get out of the group what their primary concerns are.” Social media, internet banking, email, photography and how to install apps all feature within the workshop content, trainer Rene says. “Tablets can provide a great benefit for seniors. “They are very portable and are great especially for ‘grey nomads’ who want to go caravanning. “They can take a tablet with them and use the internet and maps and find their way around.” At the end of the two-hour workshops participants will be able to confidently stay in touch with friends and family, and negotiate the challenges of WiFi and internet providers. Information technology trainer Rene says he generally leaves time at end of session to give personal help to people. Chris takes a slightly different approach
but achieves the same goal – making sure participants leave feeling confident. “At the end of the workshop you see a lot of recognition in people’s eyes,” Chris says. The first of the Tech Savvy workshops will focus on iPads (Monday, February 6) and Android tablets (Friday, February 10). The difference between the two is the operating system, the trainers say. The iPad is manufactured by Apple and works solely with their system and Android tablets are made by several manufacturers. Further workshops over the coming months will address smartphones, social media, internet and email, and library staff will run a comprehensive course covering their digital services. The smartphone workshops are about the phone as a communication tool to make life more interesting and fun, Chris says. Participants will learn how to use their phone from the basics and include camera, email and internet banking use and security. The social media workshops will cover popular apps including facebook and Skype. How to get and use the internet and email will be covered in workshops in March and April. Tech Savvy Seniors is sponsored by the NSW Department of Ageing, Disability and Homecare, and Telstra. All workshops will be held between 10am and midday in the library Technology Room. Flyers with all workshop dates can be collected from SkillsLink at 77 Hastings River Drive (phone 6583 7288), the Port Macquarie Library on Grant Street (phone 6581 8755) or viewed on Your Local Independent facebook page.

NORTH Coast Primary Health Network (NCPHN) is excited to announce funding of $300,000 for Galambila Aboriginal Health Service in Coffs Harbour to deliver the Aboriginal Mental Health Capacity Building Project in partnership with Werin Aboriginal Medical Service in Port Macquarie. The project will: • Put in place integrated social and emotional wellbeing plans for Aboriginal people in Port Macquarie with complex needs, focussing on improving wellbeing and recovery • Develop a tailored care model for Aboriginal mental health in Coffs Harbour and Hastings Macleay • Improve cultural competence for health professionals working with the Aboriginal community • Improve awareness among the Aboriginal community of mental health and suicide prevention services NCPHN’s Chief Executive Dr Vahid Saberi said the project would be an innovative and much needed addition to mental health services available for Aboriginal people. “The latest figures available show that Aboriginal people on the Mid North Coast and Hastings Macleay are experiencing nearly twice the yearly hospitalisation rate (2857) of non-Indigenous people (1654) for mental health related issues. “We are pleased with the scope of the Galambila project which includes the development of a special care model for Aboriginal mental health,” he added. Galambila’s CEO Kristine Garrett welcomed the project funding. “The Aboriginal Mental Health Capacity Building Project will improve mental health outcomes for local Aboriginal people,” Ms Garrett said. Galambila Aboriginal Medical Service was awarded the funding as a result of a tender process. Organisations were invited to establish novel mental health services, as well as implement projects to increase the capacity of the mental health system to respond to the needs of Aboriginal people and support their access to services. Through North Coast Primary Health Network, the Australian Government has provided funding of $3.8 million for mental health, suicide prevention, drug and alcohol services and projects to improve the health system. Over coming months, NCPHN will use this funding to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of mental health and drug and alcohol services across the region.

A WAUCHOPE family has found a unique way to honour the passing of a loved one. The Simmons family have ensured Helen Glenn’s love of music will create an ongoing legacy through the creation of the ‘Helen Glenn Memorial Grant for Studies in Music’. The annual endowment, administered by the Hastings Education Fund, will assist the recipient to study music with a career in mind. “Helen loved playing anywhere or everywhere, especially at church,” explained her granddaughter, Tanya Simmons. “She loved playing piano and later organ, and would play anything from a hymn to AC/ DC – she was very clever. “She taught herself and got her hands on whatever music she could find and often surrounded herself with other musicians when she could.” The inaugural bequest recipient is Sam Killick, former student and school captain of St Columba Anglican School, who was recently accepted into a music degree at the University of Sydney’s Conservatorium of Music. “I’m doing a Bachelor of Music Performance, majoring in jazz studies,” Sam said. “It involves jazz history, improvisation and jazz ensembles.” The self-taught musician plays electric guitar and is inspired by jazz musicians including Ornette Coleman, Mary Halvorson, Charlie Parker and John Coltrane. Sam said he would study for four years before deciding whether he will do session work, join other bands, teach, or follow other music opportunities that may arise. The bequest will assist with the cost of equipment needed for his studies and get him started with his course. “I want to thank the Simmons family for this

Agenda driving nation’s future IN the year since the Coalition Government launched a landmark new plan to capitalise on the nation’s strengths and turn Australia into an innovation leader, major initiatives are underway to boost investment, generate jobs and improve the quality of our lives. The $1.1 billion National Innovation and Science Agenda was launched in December 2015, and represented a significant turning point in the nation’s economic direction. Over the past 12 months, elements of the agenda have taken shape and are helping to drive a more prosperous future. The Coalition Government is investing in culture and capital, to help businesses embrace risk and encourage investment in startups and early stage ventures. The $200 million CSIRO Innovation Fund launched on the weekend will support the commercialisation of Australian research through co-investment in new spin-off and startup companies, products and services created by Australian research institutions. The $23 million Incubator Support Program was launched in September to grow the next generation of innovative businesses to globally competitive Australian companies. Industry Innovation and Science Minister Greg Hunt said the $500 million Biomedical Translation Fund would make a substantial difference to the biomedical sector by providing finance to Australian companies that are ready to turn their cutting edge research into worldleading products. We’re placing an emphasis on collaboration, to increase the level of engagement between businesses, universities and the research sector to commercialise ideas and solve problems. We’ve invested $520 million to allow the

Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO) to operate the Australian Synchrotron, and we’ve allocated $294 million for Australia’s commitment to the Square Kilometre Array, the largest and most advanced radio telescope ever constructed. There is a direct connection between industry and research collaboration and world-leading products. Recognising this, we will introduce new funding arrangements for universities from the beginning of 2017 to improve the rate of collaboration with industry. The Agenda also helps Australian companies compete on an international level, with a $36 million Global Innovation Strategy to improve Australia’s international innovation and science collaboration. The Coalition Government is also investing directly in the development of world-leading research that could revolutionise computing and the way it affects our everyday lives. We’re investing $112m to inspire all Australians, from preschoolers to women and the broader community, to engage with science, technology, engineering and maths. We have come a long way in a year and there is still more work ahead of us, but our National Innovation and Science Agenda is driving a new boom that will hold the nation in good stead in what is a rapidly changing global economy.

everyone - environmentally, economically and socially IF you make hay while the sun shines you will be rewarded, socially, economically and environmentally. And that hay could be any business activity with an electricity use that matches solar energy. The Energy Forever project is seeking host sites and donors to establish a solar energy project that will decrease green-house gas emissions and sponsor further sustainability projects. Executive committee member Angela Frimberger said host sites nominate to be involved but eligibility is determined on mostly technical criteria. “We determine how suitable the business’ roof is and their pattern of electricity use,” Dr Frimberger said. “The pattern of electricity use must suit solar energy generation. “What we seek is to be able to have the energy produced by the panel used during the day while the sun is shining.” This was because battery storage was an expensive and developing technology, she said, but that did not mean it would not be part of the project in future. Instant generation and instant use during the day, for as much of the year as possible, was the most efficient use of the Energy Forever scheme at this time, Dr Frimberger said. Host sites benefit because they are able to use renewable energy which is a social and environmental benefit, she said. And they benefit economically from a reduced tariff for their energy consumption. Port Macquarie MP Leslie Williams’ sponsorship of a solar panel took the project one step closer to fruition. “By giving communities the means to produce the energy they need, we are increasing energy self-sufficiency for regional areas, allowing profits to be retained and creating a more resilient NSW,” Mrs Williams said. “Improving the capacity of community owned clean energy production is crucial for empowering communities to take action to improve the quality of the local environments around the State.” Once the goal of 80 solar panels (20kW) have been sponsored and installed, host sites will continue to pay Energy Forever for the electricity generated, for fifteen years. This money will create funds for the Energy

Forever Sustainability Grants Program. Projects it is hoped will be funded may include energy efficient lighting for sports and social clubs, locally grown food initiatives, training of low income householders in energy efficiency, tools for a community bike repair/ furniture recycling workshop/men’s shed and improved recycling collection facilities and education, or more renewable energy projects. “There are no specific projects yet because we have not generated funds for the grants,” Dr Frimberger said. “But we are really curious and excited to see what comes in to us as sustainability proposals.” Young Phoebe Lavers has been a member of Energy Forever for only four months. The 18-year-old said her love for the environment made her get involved. “All my life I have really wanted to have children and I want to provide a nice world for them,” Miss Lavers said. “And we live in such a great town where we can utilise solar energy and be more energy efficient. “What I love so much about Energy Forever is it is a win, win, win situation for everyone environmentally, economically and socially. “This project will improve the community’s status as a socially and environmentally responsible place to live and work, and that’s good for all of us.” Mrs Williams contribution of a solar panel was greatly appreciated, Dr Frimberger said. “We thank Leslie for all her support. “She spoke beautifully at our Solarbration event last year and supported us with an article in her recent newsletter. “We are just really grateful for her positive and supportive partnership with the project.” Business sponsorship of Energy Forever attracts a tax deductible benefit and individual gift recipient status is under application. Enterta nment WEEKLY
The Blues Bros are back IT’S been 30 years and now the Blues Brothers are ready for Port Macquarie. It seems like yesterday that brothers, Jake and Elwood, played by John Belushi and Dan Ackroyd, invited the world to join them on a ‘mission from God’. The hit movie ‘The Blues Brothers’ was a loveable tale of redemption about the pair of paroled convicts, who set out to save the Catholic orphanage in which they grew up, from the taxation department. As the story goes, they reformed their rhythm and blues band, The Blues Brothers, and organised a concert to raise $5,000 to pay off the debt and save the day. But things never went according to plan for Jake and Elwood, and their story evolved into a rollicking journey of misadventure, and one of the best-loved movies of all time. Now, Aussie Blues Brothers fans are preparing for a nostalgic musical fix when Jake and Elwood make their way from America. Starring Wayne Catania as Jake and Kieron Lafferty as Elwood, the Official Blues Brothers

Revue is the only Blues Brothers show to be officially sanctioned by Dan Ackroyd, and wife of the late John Belushi, Judith Belushi Pisano. However, what sets ‘The Official Blues Brothers Revue’ apart from any other ‘Blues Brothers’ show is the people behind it. “This show was produced by Dan and Judy and they are the people that really created the characters and that makes a big difference,” said Kieron Lafferty, who plays Elwood. “The show is also different in that it is set purely on Jake and Elwood’s live performances in the movie and on Saturday Night Live, and the tours they did through America. We don’t try and produce the scenes from the show or the movie. This is really about their concert, their live show.” The Official Blues Brothers Revue jets in on March 16 at the Club North Haven in Port Macquarie. Tickets are $45 for adults and can be booked by calling the Club North Haven on 02 6559 9150 or visit https://www.trybooking.com/book/ event?eid=247106

Local MP Leslie Williams welcomes 11 new doctors who will complete a one-year internship at the Port Macquarie Base Hospital
New interns at Port
ELEVEN new doctors, including five from Port Macquarie, will hone their skills and knowledge for a year, at the town’s local hospital. The university graduates are just a portion of 113 who will complete internships, across the state, under the NSW Rural Preferential Recruitment Pathway. The State Government initiative ensures medical graduates spend the majority of their first two years at work, in a regional setting. Member for Port Macquarie Leslie Williams, last week, welcomed the 11 new medical graduates to their 2017 internship at the Port Macquarie Base Hospital. “I’m so pleased these new doctors will undertake their internship at our local hospital,” Mrs Williams said. “Every intern will benefit from the support and direction of our clinicians.” NSW funds more medical intern positions than any other state or territory, she added. Hospitals across the state will host 992 interns, with 12 of these being Indigenous - up from 983 interns in 2016. This record number represents a funding commitment by the NSW Government of $107 million, Mrs Williams said. “I wish all interns the best for what I am sure will be a very informative and exciting year. “Five of the new interns are locals and no doubt they are excited about the opportunity to return to their hometown in their first year as medical graduates,” Mrs Williams said. NSW guarantees intern positions to all domestic medical graduates of NSW universities, to many graduates from interstate universities, some international full-fee paying medical graduates and is the only state to offer two-year employment contracts to graduates. This includes the one-year internship followed by a year which focusses on consolidating professional AIR CONDITIONING CLEANING practice and experience in different clinical settings. PORT Macquarie Sailing Club’s fourth race of the summer series was held on Sunday in quite a strong north-easter with a strengthening runout tide, making for rough and challenging conditions. It was a handicap start, but for a change, the start times were set on a countdown system instead of a count-up system. The catamarans had three starters: Frank O’Rourke on Dino won on yardstick, followed by Tony Kuhn on Stella, pictured, and Dave Winter on Spica. Stella won on handicap ahead of Dino and Spica. The monohull division was where the real carnage was, with 2 finishers out of 6. Kelly Miller in Devocean took the yardstick win ahead of her partner Scott Witchard and novice crew Blake in Jupiter. Steve Bohlsen and new crew Michael Jones in Splash Dance were making a fair show in the heavy weather until the rudder box disintegrated, forcing them to retire. Stuart Symons sailing Big Bang also had a novice crew, Glen, who was thrown through the mainsail in a capsize forcing their retirement. Tony Walker in Deep Purple had a few capsizes and retired, and Paul Robertson, sailing Flembouyant with daughter Alex, also retired. Devocean also took the handicap win ahead of Jupiter. MCF on the ball in major tournament
UNDER 9s exceeded expectations at the largest Futsal tournament in the southern hemisphere on the Gold Coast recently. Mid Coast Futsal (MCF) brought home the runners-up trophy from under the noses of teams, including Gold Coast and South Brisbane. These teams were solid challengers in the round games with Gold Coast facing off against MCF team in the semi-final. The game went to extra time and MCF scored their winning goal with just four players. A great atmosphere filled the huge stadium at Coomera with determination and sportsmanship on display. MCF faced off against Just Futsal for the final and although they fought hard, the winning team was a good unit. The team has now received an invitation to Orlando, Florida for the FIFA juniors’ tournament. Anyone interested in joining the monthly winter representative tournament, or the club, should contact Alison on 0412 191 923 or alison@midcoastfutsal.com.
