Our living treasure No need for time capsule - we have Richard and Gwen
By CHRISTINA PARKIN WE would like to introduce Port Macquarie’s very own ‘living time capsules’ Richard Grimmond and his wife Gwen. When the Port Macquarie Historical Society recently celebrated their 60th birthday there was no need to dig a hole to find remnants of that period, they only had to turn to their own living treasures Richard and Gwen, who were there as foundation members in 1956. Richard began his career as a high school teacher at Wauchope and was friendly with Lionel Gilbert, a primary school teacher there. Lionel used a ‘show and tell’ activity with his pupils to bring something historic to school, which was showcased at a parent night. The interest generated stimulated the High School principal, Mr Frank Manser, to call a public meeting on March 22, 1956 and the Hastings Historical Society was created. “Our first project was to clear the thorn weed which covered the Innes Ruins (an historic settlement) and in doing so, a well was discovered,” says Richard. “Mr Manser’s daughter came up with an ingenious way to determine the depth of the well by lowering a bicycle lamp tied to a long string down the well and then measuring the string.” The friendly rivalry between the two towns of Port Macquarie and Wauchope then extended to a Port MacquarieFRONT Historical Society PAGE ADbeing formed when local butcher, Neville Anderson and Ray Dick (son of the famous photographer) identified that ‘Port Macquarie had more history than Wauchope’. • Continued Page 2

The Port Macquarie Library Building (formerly School of Arts) on the corner of Clarence and Hay Streets taken in the 1950s, which was the site for the first meetings of the Port Macquarie Historical Society
The Museum Room on the first floor of the Port Macquarie Library building, probably taken late 1958 or early 1959
Historical Society has its living time capsules • From Page 1 Gwen Grimmond was a young teacher on the staff of the Port Macquarie Intermediate High School (on the current grounds of the Port Macquarie Primary School) when she had her arm twisted by Patricia (Pat) Smith to join the newly created Port Macquarie Historical Society on November 8, 1956. Pat Smith was a newly graduated arts student, passionate about history, who insisted ‘you newly-weds (Richard and Gwen) need an interest’. Early meetings were held in the School of Arts building, which had become the Port Macquarie Library, and now the site of the ‘Glasshouse’. This building had an adjacent vacant block of land upon which the local Ambulance ran housie-housie (bingo). “I recall our meetings were constantly interrupted by the housie caller,” recalled
Richard. “Many a time we had to compete with the call of ‘two little ducks, twenty two’, but the ambulance service in those days had to raise their own funds to keep it going.” The desire to display many beautiful gowns belonging to grandparents, and great-grand parents drove the desire to find a place to exhibit them. Neville Anderson approached local businesses for any unwanted glass cabinets. When Neville and Richard carried the cabinet into an empty room in the School of Arts, and Neville placed two cannon balls inside, Neville remarked: “Remember this day, Richard, it is the very beginning of the Port Macquarie Historical Museum”. Common sense prevailed and the two Historical Societies amalgamated on March 4, 1957, with Neville Anderson stepping aside
for Frank Manser as President and Pat Smith as Secretary. However, Neville Anderson later became President from 1966 – 1983. The present building housing the Port Macquarie Historical Museum became available soon after the amalgamation and was the focus of many working bees. “I also remember helping Neville cement the footpath in front of the museum to keep the grass from growing against the wall – I can’t imagine the council allowing us to do that today!” said Richard. As a young couple, the demands of building a home and the birth of their daughter, Janet, meant that Richard and Gwen Grimmond then resigned and left Port Macquarie in 1965 for Cowra and Finley for twenty years before returning and rejoining the Historical Society, nineteen years ago.
Solar power spotlight “
We just want to get the idea out there and for people in the community to understand who we are and what we do. It’s never been done in NSW. It’s definitely groundbreaking.
“
By LIZZIE McLEOD THE Port Macquarie-Hastings Sustainability Network is on the hunt for a host site that will not only save dollars, but will help support the area’s local ‘Energy Forever Project’. Their catchcry - save money, save the environment and support local projects by letting ‘Energy Forever’ install solar panels onto your business’ roof. ‘Energy Forever’ is a community-owned solar power project that intends to install between 70 and 100kW of clean, renewable solar power, for one or more large electricity consumers in the local community. The project will also provide funding for community driven sustainability projects. “The other main benefit is that we want to provide an ongoing grants program,” said Anne Wilson, Project Officer of ‘Energy Forever’. “Every year we have a grants program that we can open up for local community organisations that want to do something sustainable and we can fund them. “So say there is a local netball club that needs some more energy efficient lights in the club room, or a local NRL club that needs a clunky old fridge replaced with something more efficient, they might apply for a grant from us to do that.”
Energy Forever The chosen host site will in return receive clean power supply and lower electricity costs with no upfront costs. The site must have more than 200 square metres of viable roof or ground space, which will be available to a reasonable amount of sunlight with little shading between 9am and 4pm. The site must also have electricity usage of more than 300 to 500 kWh daytime power consumption, such as a hospitality, medical, retail, educational, or industrial load. “They won’t have to pay anything upfront and they will get a reduction in their electricity
bills, they will also get gifted the system at the end of the fifteen years, and they’ll be helping to contribute to the sustainability grants program. “The whole purpose of it is if a business or organization was wanting to install a solar power system they would probably just do it off their own back, so we are really looking for somewhere that doesn’t have the capital to do it themselves, and also is community minded and wants to help the sustainability grants program as well.” ‘Energy Forever’ fundraises to get the money for the panels, the initial system. The host site will save around $700 a year on electricity from this system and over the course of the fifteen years, the sale of that electricity will generate about $80,000 for the grants program. “We just want to get the idea out there and for people in the community to understand who we are and what we do,” said Anne. “It’s never been done in NSW. It’s definitely groundbreaking.” For more information or if you think your site may be suitable, visit www.pmhsn.org. au/energy-forever/ or www.facebook.com/ pmhsustainabilitynetwork Or email energyforever@pmhsn.org.au or call the Project Officer, Anne Wilson, on 6586 2260 or 0419 161 568.
“Membership was set at five shillings a year and a junior membership was set at one shilling,” recalls John Johnstone, the only remaining original ‘junior member’ of the Historical Society. And while today’s Historical Society is peopled by retirees, that was not the case 60 years ago. “You have to remember that these were the days before TV, so there was not much to do,” explained Clive Smith, current President of the Port Macquarie Historical Society. “Port Macquarie was a small town, a family holiday destination, with only a few tourist attractions, one of which was the Port Macquarie Museum which hosted over 30,000 visitors a year. “Today, this has been reduced to 7-8,000 per year.”
Volunteers thanked THE MINISTER responsible for volunteering John Ajaka and Member for Port Macquarie, Leslie Williams recently launched the 2016 Student Premier’s Volunteer Recognition Program. The Premier’s Volunteer Recognition Program has the potential to recognise the more than two million volunteers in NSW. The Program has two recognition streams, youth and adult, and different levels of recognition for time spent volunteering. Mrs Williams said the NSW Government acknowledged the immense benefits of volunteering, and how vital it is to support volunteering across the State. “Volunteers do so much to make our local community stronger. Whether it is lending a hand at weekend sport, patrolling our beaches, serving in the SES or helping families in need, they deserve our thanks and recognition,” Mrs Williams said. Students are able to log their volunteering achievements on the Up2Now website, which also allows students to tailor resumes to demonstrate their experiences to prospective employers and in other applications, such as for university courses. All students who log their volunteering time requirements will receive a Premier’s Volunteer Recognition Program certificate at the end of 2016. “The NSW Government is determined to better support, recognise and encourage volunteering across the State,” Mr Ajaka said. In 2015 more than 5,000 students from participating schools received Premier’s Volunteer Recognition Program certificates for their achievements. All NSW school principals are invited to register their school at the Up2Now website to enable students to record their volunteering.

Doctor Moron opens to wider audience
‘Local’ musical reborn in film
Port is becoming dementia friendly By CHRISTINA PARKIN
By SUE PATERICK
WHEN The Island of Doctor Moron, an original, Australian rock musical, opened at The New Olympia Theatre in Paddington in late 2014, it literally blew its audiences away. The all-star cast, colour, octane-fuelled energy, amazing costumes, fabulous face painting, acrobatic dance routines and incredible rock and jazz music were so addictive, some patrons returned to watch the play seven times in just four weeks. If you missed it the first time, this sell-out rock musical has been made into a film that creator and producer, Chris Dockrill, intends on taking to the world. The film of The Island of Doctor Moron premiered at the Dendy Opera Keys on Sydney Harbour last week with tickets selling out a fortnight in advance. Chris said this is the first film of a live, rock musical ever to be made in Australia. He wrote the original version of Moron, as he affectionately calls the play, in 1998 and produced it for Kempsey High School, where he was an English and drama teacher. Even then Moron was an instant success. It ran for five shows, played to 2000 people and had audiences of all ages returning to see it again and again. “That production confirmed my belief that Moron had a unique, mainstream appeal,” Chris said. The stage show in Sydney was a real family affair with Chris’s wife, Lyn, writing the music and singing backing vocals, while son, Luke, was production manager. Keeping it in the Macleay Valley family, Chris Austin was the rock musical’s art and design director, Phil Kesby was audio Engineer, and Kelly Bryant and Jane Eller sang backing vocals. Moron is about a couple shipwrecked on a mysterious island, who are captured by a tribe

of Rastafarian voodoo natives, drugged with Jungle Fever juice, almost cooked in a cauldron and then auctioned off to Doctor Moron - a scientist experimenting with changing humans into animals. Patron, actor Jack Thompson, said the energy of the show was irresistible and it was destined to captivate audiences all around the world. Best-selling author, Matthew Reilly, said the rock musical was energetic, enthusiastic and toe-
tapping, but most of all fun. A contributing factor to this success was leasing the disused Palace Academy Twin Cinema building, and then converting it into an impressive 258-seat theatre especially for the production of the rock musical. This gave the producers a significant advantage of being able to control the theatre, do all auditions and then rehearsals on site, plus control the space to make the film. The film, according to Chris, is like the live show on ‘steroids’ of state-of-the-art filmmaking technology. Apart from screening in Australian capital cities, Moron will be shown in the USA, UK and Europe. Chris is also looking forward to taking the film on the road through regional Australia, starting with Kempsey because that was where the idea for Moron was born. It is also the place he and Lyn have lived, worked and raised a family for almost 30 years. To find out more go to www. theislandofdoctormoron.com.au or visit www. facebook.com/theislandofdoctormoron
PORT Macquarie is leading the state with having nine ‘Dementia Friendly’ businesses, while Sydney has three and the Central Coast, one. With recent reports quoting the incidence of dementia rising in our local community and the unenviable notoriety for the region having the third highest prevalence of the disease in NSW, the need for businesses to become dementia savvy has been identified as a growing necessity. Kara Nicholson, Project Officer for Alzheimer’s Australia NSW Dementia-Friendly Community, said that simple changes can be made that make a big difference. Sue Jogever, Principal with Coastfront Realty was the first business in Port Macquarie to access the support of Kara to assist her business to firstly ‘work towards’ and then gain accreditation. “It certainly wasn’t hard or onerous, and the simple suggestions have been easy to implement,” remarked Mrs Jogever. “Kara helped us develop a ‘Dementia Friendly Action Plan’ which resulted from an assessment of indoor and outdoor spaces, a commitment to awareness, education and training for all staff and a review of key documentation that clients were exposed to. “Making forms simpler and using a larger font; ensuring directional signage is placed in key areas and using bold colours for defining boundaries eg doors against walls – even down to having a blue toilet seat.” The simple changes arise out of a need to reduce confusion and disorientation which can arise for some people with dementia. Even an awareness that repeated questioning by a client or customer with dementia is not done intentionally to raise annoyance can assist with interactions. Kara Nicholson emphasised that clients with dementia can still identify body language and identify signs of frustration shown by others and this can increase their anxiety. The businesses that followed the example of Coastfront Realty include Topspot Café in Laurieton, Buzz Café in the Peachtree Arcade in Port Macquarie, Fat Fish Café in Bonnie Hills, Settlement City shopping centre, MBC Recruitment, Silver Service Hire Cars and St Agnes Parish across all their entities – early childhood, disabilities and aged care. “When I first heard Kara speak about the program I identified how, as a highly personalised service for those buying and selling real estate, our business could easily make the changes suggested,” explained Mrs Jogever. “We could see that we already closely work with our clients to select properties that meet their needs, but by further narrowing down the number offered for viewing helps those with dementia and their carers to feel less daunted by the process. “It’s about reducing confusion, especially with legal documents, so extra time is taken and it may take more than one occasion for the client to feel comfortable about their decisions.” • Special Seniors Expo feature: Pages 11-19

LETTER WEEK
Sandy Mackenzie
OF THE
Brought to you by
WELL I hope you have all recovered from chocolate overload and enjoyed the 4-day Easter break with family and friends. The Easter break is a living nightmare for those of us in newspaper land as we have 2 days to put together 5 days’ work to produce the next paper. The fact you’re reading this column means we actually pulled it off! Hallelujah! A big thank you to all the team for making it happen. It’s a massive job every week but this week the whole team have pulled together and excelled themselves. Apart from the tight (suffocating) deadlines and extra stress to meet deadline this paper has been an absolute pleasure to produce. However, I find it amazing that even though everyone else is enjoying their break for some reason I’m expected to be on call 24/7. I know as a business owner there are always going to be problems that have to be dealt with out of hours but, really? I know we are a newspaper and our job is to inform the community, as best we can. It is not my problem though if a business chooses not to advertise their sale or a hotel doesn’t advertise their event in our paper. Don’t get me wrong I would love the extra revenue but I don’t do standover tactics. If you have a problem with a business not advertising; please call them. Not me! Cheers!

Letters on cars a sign of stupidity MR BRAD Cameron - as a 75 year old, who has been driving for 54 years with a perfectly clean driving record, not even a parking ticket, I am happy to display an S badge as a Senior driver. Hmm, although maybe that could be taken for Senile, Stupid, or a few other things. Maybe we should all know who is sharing the road with us. I would
suggest the following, and maybe the list could be added to: D plate for anyone ever convicted of drunk driving or driving under the influence of drugs; SP (to differentiate from Seniors) for people with convictions for speeding offences; R for anyone ever convicted of road rage. H for hoon convictions; PA for convictions for parking offences; A for anyone being involved in more than one
accident while driving, whether their fault or not as they are obviously accident prone. I could see some drivers, not particularly Seniors, having a nice array of badges on their vehicles. Maybe one badge of C for ‘I’m a crap driver, lots of lovely convictions, who is not old but just doesn’t give a toss about anyone else on the road.’ One more – NL – No Licence
(so don’t expect any insurance cover from me if I’m driving like a lunatic for any reason, and run into you). The only problem I see with this is that all those other badges will have been ‘earned’ because of wrongdoing, whilst the S badge will merely be age discriminatory. Sheila Wick Port Macquarie

Share the wealth I NOTE that all residents seem to receive the same stock standard letters from this Council. No money, not a priority or wait; we’ll make a budget next year for it! Roads, footpaths and general maintenance concern most of us and if you look at how grand Port’s CBD is looking and the pavements and gardens it’s not unreasonable to want this in all the Hastings, is it? Port’s businesses can afford the Council levy when you look at how much money flows into them from the Hasting’s Council help with all its
support in all the events it hosts! But it’s all the ratepayers that contribute to the area and those we elect should recognise that the outer areas will never have the levy money that Port does; so budget accordingly to accommodate this. In our CBD in Wauchope we have an issue that this council doesn’t call a priority, we have disabled people who use scooters or wheel chairs who cannot even use most of the footpaths because either they don’t have access on or off; or the access doesn’t meet. Some of the local businesses don’t have ramps into their shops therefore making it difficult to shop.
Why can’t the Wauchope Chamber and Hastings Council work together and fix this? After all, every customer is the businesses’ lifeblood! C Towell Wauchope
Roundabout conern A LETTER in 2011 from the PMHC was quoted recently by the editor refers to the criteria as to motorists using roundabouts. (Independent March 10, 2016) For those who need to utilise the Sherwood, Lake Road and Oxley roundabout, the subjects in the

Conditions have altered from 5 years ago particularly in the area concerned and so the assumptions and approximates in the letter may not now apply. Most of the day, drivers are forced to approach this roundabout at a slower speed through the convoy of vehicles in all directions. Exiting Sherwood Road to enter Lake Road is very dangerous as you are not able to see any approaching vehicle until it is halfway around the roundabout. Don West Port Macquarie

‘Barbershop’ without blokes
The Melodic Fourtunes - (L to R) Sylvia Scott, Judy Jelsma, Sharon Westman, Bethany Cook, Valerie Wagstaff, Hilary West, Lorinda Carne, Kate Chilvers, Marina Andersen and Sheridan Sommerley (director) - seek other singers interested in a capella part singing aka ‘barbershop’
SINGING ‘barbershop’ style immediately conjures up an image of four men singing a capella, dressed in vertically striped vests and sporting a ‘boater’ hat. For the ‘Melodic Fourtunes’, the variation of this vision contains more than four females, sans boater and striped vest. “We are a newly established group of singers who love the fun style of barbershop singing,” explained Sylvia Scott. “We are always inventing new ‘choralography’ and practising stunning harmonies.” The group meets each Monday night of the school term from 7 to 9pm at the Conservatorium Mid North Coast centre in Hollingworth Street. Any female interested in trying something different with their singing is encouraged to visit and audition. Director, Sheriden Sommerley, explained that barbershop harmony is a unique musical art form, known for its four-part a capella harmony and the ‘expanded and resonant sound’. So come along and stretch your musicality. Sheridan can be contacted on 0429 313 089.

NSW is increasing recycling and reducing litter: The 2015 NSW State of the Environment report shows littering is reducing, recycling is increasing and renewable energy is on the rise. The number of items of litter has dropped by 16 per cent in 2014-15 compared to 2013-14 – this is four times the national reduction rate of just
four per cent. The report showed NSW was managing waste better than ever, particularly through increased recycling and litter reduction. In 2012-13, NSW recycled 10.5 million tonnes compared with 5.3 million tonnes in 2002-03, despite an increase in population. Electricity generated from renewables has increased from 6.1 per cent in 2008 to almost 11 per cent in 2014, and in the same time electricity from coal has reduced from 91 per cent to 82 per cent. The report highlights the government’s achievements in working for a healthy future but also shows there is room for improvement and challenges ahead. My first impressions were of shock about the busyness and craziness of life in a “ city filled with piles of dirt, rubble and rubbish from the earthquake

‘Schoolies’ made a difference By CHRISTINA PARKIN
FORGET the Gold Coast or Byron, as Nepal was rated a better proposition as a ‘schoolies’ destination for 17-year-old Brendon Wood in November, 2015. “I really wanted to give back in some way to the school and its people because the teachers were really amazing,” explained Brendon as to why he chose Nepal rather than a good time on the Gold Coast. Brendon, who attended Heritage Christian School, and his friend Hayden Carter were part of a contingent of 14 young people from Port Macquarie, Lismore, Sydney and Western Australia. They travelled with Ross Nancarrow, a pastor with the Grace Church, and spent time in Kathmandu in central Nepal, Pokhara in the north-west and Chitwan in southern Nepal. “My first impressions were of shock about the busyness and craziness of life in a city filled with piles of dirt, rubble and rubbish from the

Where the government — long mired in political instability — has failed to help poor villagers, aid groups have trickled in to fill the gaps, some of them carrying a message of salvation. Brendon’s mission also delivered a bag of Rotary Club of Port Macquarie beanies and knitwear to an excited group from a small impoverished church in Khathmandu, which were very well received coming into winter. To raise funds for the trip Brendon’s two brothers, Aeron and Oscar organised a competition which resulted in their long hair being shaved by Jimbo’s Barbershop and raising $2000. Now a student with Charles Sturt University studying a degree in applied science in outdoor recreation and ecotourism, Brendon hopes to do more travelling in the future.

WITH all the recent media speculation around various council mergers and amalgamations across NSW, two questions I am often asked these days are: “How is Port Macquarie Hastings Council performing financially?” With Cr Geoff Hawkins Portfolios: Corporate Services And “What’s the outlook for the future?” In other words are we in a sustainable and Public Spaces. financial position, or are we behind the 8-ball? By SUE PATERICK TO keep their history and language alive for future generations, the stories of 48 Dunghutti elders growing up on Macleay Valley missions and reserves has been recorded and transformed into amazing works of art. Thanks to support from Kempsey Shire Council and Melville High School, the Painting Country – Mapping the Macleay project, is a first for the community and a unique exhibition. Facilitators Emily King and Uncle Bob Smith digitally recorded and translated the elders’ stories, taking a year to complete. Local band, Still Thinking, created the
soundtrack for the hour-long documentary, which was produced by Frontyard Films. Eleven schools in the Macleay Valley were then shown the digital recordings and, with the help of local artists Uncle Richard Campbell, Uncle Milton Budge, Aunty Esther Quinlin and Elwyn Toby, painted their interpretations onto canvas. The result is a series of 13 large murals each comprising of 30 individual and colourful paintings. Nine of the murals are showing in the Gallery. Coordinator of the Dunghutti-Ngaku Aboriginal Art Gallery, Jann Kesby, feels very fortunate to be able to showcase these unique
artworks. “It’s the first time anything like this has been done in the valley making it historically significant,” she said. “It is important for the children to learn and understand Indigenous history and culture.” The exhibition opened last week at the Dunghutti-Ngaku Aboriginal Art Gallery and will run until Sunday, April 24. The gallery, open from 10am to 4pm Tuesday to Sunday, is located next to the Visitor Information Centre on the Macleay Valley Way at South Kempsey. For more information phone 6562 1432.
AN extra $2,714,800 in Federal funding has been secured for aged care services in the Manning and Hastings areas. Federal funding will be provided for 76 additional home care places for the region. The places would be allocated among six organisations who would deliver services assisting older people in the Manning and Hastings, stay in their own homes. The services include: • Storm Retirement Village – 12 places • EACH Service – 12 places • Feros Care – 14 places • Mayo Healthcare – 12 places • Catholic Care of the Aged – 12 places • Uniting Care – 14 places This week I met with locals benefitting from the Home Care services provided by Storm Retirement Village in Taree. I am delighted to announce today that Storm Village will receive a further 12 federallyfunded home care places. Storm has an excellent track record in delivering home care and currently provides services to more than 40 residents in the Manning. These additional places I am announcing today will also support veterans and people with dementia. When the Coalition Government came to office in 2013, funding for aged and home care in our electorate was around $90-million a year. Today, that investment has increased to over $105-million a year providing significant support to many our community needing assistance, particularly in their twilight years.

ROSS BIRD
How long have you lived in or around the Hastings? Only 5 years, but I was born at Wingham, Port Macquarie was always a favourite venue to visit. I moved here after spending 10 years in Cairns, hopefully getting away from cyclones and humidity. What do you love most about the Hastings? The diversity of the area. Being retired there are so many facilities for retirees being sporting, cultural, medical and educational, there is no need to move out of the area. Also the scenic beaches and the Hastings estuary a most beautiful location. Where do you work and what do you love about your work? I have been retired for over 10 years, I worked for Telstra, when I retired I was in a management position which required a lot of travel around Australia. I have also worked in a golf administration role at Yorkeys Knob, Cairns, in the sport that I love. How do you start your day? Usually reading the papers electronically on my ipad, firstly the local papers and then the State paper. Must do the Sudoku before leaving the house. Scan the papers for golfing news, particularly the Wauchope Mens Veterans Golf Club. What do you do in your spare time? A lot of my time is taken up with the Wauchope Men’s Veterans Golf Club, which I am Captain. I enjoy this type of activity as I am a believer in people getting out and enjoying the outdoors, here the reason is golf. What is the achievement you are most proud of? My proudest moment would be researching my family tree, contacting people all over Australia to compile a book and now a disc of our Birds coming to Australia and their movements and growth since then and then being part of the committee which staged a large Family Reunion at Wingham. Being a father and step father for my children and grandchildren.
IT’S certainly been an eventful week, both in Federal politics and around Port Macquarie. In Canberra, legislation to reform Senate voting was passed by the Upper House and Prime Minister Turnbull announced both the House of Representative and Senate would be recalled on April 18 to provide time for ABCC legislation to be considered and passed. If the Senate doesn’t pass the ABCC legislation, the Prime Minister will advise the Governor-General to dissolve both Houses of Parliament and issue writs for an election. To leave that option open, and to allow the Opposition Leader to reply to the Budget, the Budget was brought forward on May 3. Plenty of people around Port Macquarie have been asking what a double dissolution election means – in short, every Senator and MP will have to stand for their position again, rather than the half-Senate election you would traditionally have. For a more detailed explanation please go to my Facebook page. Closer to home, I had the opportunity to take a boat ride to Pelican Island with the Hastings Birdwatchers and dynamic Camden Haven couple Sue Proust and Peter West. Sue and Peter have worked for many years rehabilitating the island to ensure rare and endangered wading birds have safe feeding grounds during their flying migratory visits to

Port Macquarie from the Arctic. A $23,000 Federal grant through the 20 Million Tree programme will fund the purchase of 700 trees to be planted on the island. Their restoration work clearing noxious and choking weeds and native seed collection is one of the first of its kind in Australia to successfully rehabilitate wading bird habitat. It was straight off the boat and onto the opening of the new Tesla Supercharger station at Cassegrain Winery, taking in the rapid progress of the Pacific Highway Upgrade work happening along the way. The Superchargers will allow owners of Model S electric cars to travel between Sydney, Port Macquarie, Coffs Harbour and Byron Bay, for free. Thanks again to the Port Macquarie Historical Society for their invitation to celebrate their 60th anniversary with a High Tea celebration. Without the many hundreds of volunteers who give up their time, we would not have the long and rich history of our region.
Backpacker review MEMBER for Cowper Luke Hartsuyker has welcomed a review into taxation arrangements for the Working Holiday Maker visa program. “I raised this matter with the Prime Minister in the Party Room earlier in the week and I’m very pleased to see the announcement of a review,” Mr Hartsuyker said. “This review is evidence that the Australian Government has listened to the concerns about the impact of the so called ‘backpacker tax’ on our global competitiveness and many of our agricultural industries, especially horticulture. “What we were seeing on the north coast is a drop in the number of backpackers being available for work. “This had the potential to be a disaster for horticulture in our region and also a disaster for tourism by virtue in the drop in tourist numbers.” The review’s scope will cover taxation and superannuation arrangements under the program and will help to ensure the right measures are in place to support the two key growth sectors of agriculture and tourism. “This is a welcome opportunity for the agriculture sector, and the horticulture sector in particular, to provide input to the review process.” “So it’s great to see the matter reviewed and I look forward to a successful resolution.”
Some more left-handed prejudice my WE were sitting in the club watching the crowds of people collecting their raffle prizes while we won nothing. It was a depressing sight. We were thinking of complaining that it was surely our turn to win something – anything would do. Then the subject suddenly turned to left-handed people and ‘mollydooks’. Some people call it ‘mollydook’, some say ‘molly duke’ and some say ‘molly hander’, but it all means the same thing. And it is credited as being Australian, although I don’t think the word was always Australian. The word has a very short history, if my big dictionary is anything to go by. All dictionaries seem to go back only to 1926. The dictionary says ‘mollydook’ is Australian slang and refers to a left-handed person, the word molly referring to an effeminate man or a milksop. I’m only saying what the book says. It said ‘mauldy’ referred to the left hand and that is apparently where the word ‘molly’ comes from. Mauldy was also spelt ‘mauley’ in some places. The Oxford Australian National Dictionary also refers to ‘mollydook’ as two words, ‘molly’ and ‘dook’. Molly, in this dictionary, refers to an effeminate man or a milk sop and dook refers to the hand.
LAURIE BARBER
It therefore concluded that ‘a mollydook refers to a left-handed person’. I know, there is nothing about left-handed there, but I am only telling you what the dictionary says. If we go back in another direction, we see that ‘molly’ refers to a fussy man who is used to doing women’s work. So says Susan Butler, publisher of the Macquarie Dictionary, who has gone back to the British dialect. Susan says ‘dook’ refers to a hand or a fist. Have you ever heard a person inviting you to “put up your dooks”. That was an invitation to a fight, usually referring to children, although I have seen some arguments on the bowling green. Author Sidney Baker, who attempted to put in one collection the Australian words we all use, said ‘mollydooker’ referred to ‘a left-handed boxer (taken from old English mauley) and dook, or duke, the fist or hand’. Going back to 1926, my two Oxford
dictionaries quote JV Marshall as saying ‘mauldy’ refers to left-handed. Mauley refers to ‘a hand, a fist’, but I could find no reference to an effeminate man. GA Wilkes in writing about ‘mollydooker’ says such a person is a ‘cissy’ and ‘therefore awkward’. He quoted Sidney Baker as saying a mollydooker was a left-handed person. The Northern Daily Leader in Tamworth – it uses this column each week - is quoted in the Australian National Dictionary as saying on December 2, 1983, that five of the top seven batsmen doing battle for Australia were ‘mollydookers’. Rolf Boldrewood, who wrote Robbery Under Arms (my copy had Peter Finch and a very young David McCallum on the cover), said in one part of the book ‘it takes a good man to stand up to me with the gloves or the naked mauleys’. I tried to find a reference to an effeminate man in the word mollydook, but although the books seemed to take it for granted, I could find nothing that I could refer to as proof. But I do have something about ‘cacky hander’. I’ll save that for another column. It’s not very pleasant reading. lauriebarber.com; lbword@midcoast.com.au

Offering a start can lead to big things
Sponsored by SkillsLink Training - your community college.
GETTING a start in a new career is always tough and work placements make a big difference for people trying to prove they can do a new job well. At the community college we take work placements very seriously. We provide them for high school students, as well as seeking placements for our adult students in various work areas, such as aged and disability support, youth and community services. Sometimes it’s hard in a small town to find enough places for everyone wanting to get a start, but the college believes we should go the extra mile to assist new career development for those starting out or changing their work. Mid Coast Connect works with us to find places for school students, and we approach employers directly to seek their help in placing our adult students. If you would like to offer work placements, please get in touch, and if you or your staff need training to improve your career aspirations or business capacity, check out our website for the wide range of courses on offer: www. skillslinktraining.com.au Or just give us a call find out more about our programs. A LITTLE over 6 months ago Rod Lewis and Scott Marsh opened the doors to their business Home Instead Senior Care offering non-medical in home services on the Mid North Coast region of NSW. Home Instead Senior Care services have a team of dedicated CAREGivers that offers the following services: • Home help • Personal care • Support when returning home from hospital • Medication reminders • Respite Care • Companionship • Transport • Care planning and coordination • End of life care • Support for those living with dementia
On top of providing a service dedicated to enhancing the lives of our older population and allowing them to maintain independence in their own homes, Rod and Scott have also embraced the local community by planning and organising the upcoming Seniors 2016 Info Expo at Port City Bowling Club. Both Rod and Scott have worked tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure as many organisations as possible can be involved in the Expo to showcase what we have to offer seniors living on the Mid North Coast. A feat in itself when you are running a service that operates 24/7. “The positive response from exhibitors has been truly overwhelming; we just didn’t expect so many organisations would take part. It really
shows us how many people in the community rely on the services that will be participating at the Expo,” says Scott. “Local businesses jumped at the chance to be involved and we appreciate the support of our sponsors, Your Local Independent, All Round Financial Planning, Port City Bowling Club and Meals on Wheels, and of course Home Instead have the absolute pleasure of hosting the expo,” Rod said. For more information on the services available for seniors on the Mid North Coast and Home Instead Senior Care you can visit the Seniors Info Expo on Monday April 4 from 9.30am to 12.30pm at the Port City Bowling Club.
AS we age, falls become a great reason for concern. One in three seniors aged 65 and older fall at least once a year, with 83,800 people over 65 were admitted to hospital after a fall in 2009-2010 (Australian Institute of Health and Welfare) and falls claimed the lives of 1,530 people over 75 in 2011 (Australian Bureau of Statistics). Don’t be one of these statistics; your chances of surviving a fall are six times greater if help arrives within the hour. Are you concerned about yourself or your loved ones if there is an accident or health issue? How will you get help fast? Connect Alert Alarms are ideal for providing emergency assistance from your loved ones with the push of a button. The fall detection capabilities automatically send an alert to your emergency contacts advising them of your fall and your location. With two-way communication, you can talk to your contacts and advise them of what you require - help getting up, ambulance, etc. This device will give any person confidence and security and it will give the family peace of mind knowing their relative is safe and could be contacted and located at all times.

Meals on Wheels is more than what you think MOST people know that Meals on Wheels provides delivered meals for those over 65 who will benefit from the convenience of having tasty, nutritious cooked meals delivered to them, or prepared ready for collection by the client themselves. But there are many other facts about our local Meals on Wheels Mid North Coast service that many in our community are not aware of. Many people believe that meals from Meals on Wheels are provided as a free charity service, which is not the case. This misconception keeps some older people who would benefit from the service from registering because they don’t see themselves as needing or wanting charity. The truth is that, while the organisation is a registered charity for fundraising purposes, meals are not free, but are charged at a subsidised and very affordable price to clients. Through their large network of volunteers who deliver the meals, the invaluable service is also able to monitor the wellbeing of clients, should they need this as they get older. Where appropriate, the organisation is able to refer clients to other organisations that can offer a different range of services. This, along with regular, nutritionally balanced meals, can make a significant difference by enabling the client to remain in their own home, rather than needing to enter residential care. While staying in one’s own home is often a preference, social isolation can become a problem. It is now recognised as one of the

This meant that people’s wishes not being followed in medical emergencies. Imagine getting a call at 3am, being half asleep, and having to make treatment decisions on behalf of your loved one. You have never spoken about their wishes, and you want to do the right thing. But what is the right thing? Situations such as this happen to many people throughout the world, every day. But, there is a solution. An Advance Care Directive that is accessible 24 hours a day, seven days a week, can be developed so medical professionals understand the wishes of yourself or your loved ones in a medical emergency. developed an advance care directive template in consultation with legal and emergency specialists, called a ‘Myplan’. This allows you to record your treatment choices and life values. It lets your voice be heard when you cannot communicate due to injury or illness and means your family don’t have to make these choices for you at a very emotional time. An ACP consultant can help you to construct your Myplan, and will provide 24 hour, seven
day a week access to your Myplan via your unique ID number. ACP will contact you yearly to renew your Myplan, ensure your choices are up to date, and change any details if necessary. If you already have a document you prefer, we can also make that accessible through our secure system. By being accessible anywhere, anytime, Myplan gives you the freedom to travel without having to worry about what may happen in a medical emergency. Myplan is an important document for everyone, not just the older community. It assists young families to have control of their choices, and encourages discussion with family members regarding treatment decisions and options in the case of an injury or illness. FOR 30 years, the team at Direct Advisers has been helping their clients achieve their financial and lifestyle goals. The business was founded in Port Macquarie in 1986 as a boutique, independently owned financial planning practice. Director and Principal Ursula Boorman, Founder Peter Rodgers and their team recently celebrated Direct Advisers’ 30-year anniversary with a High Tea at Sails attended by colleagues and clients – some who have been with the business for more than 20 years. Ursula, who is a Certified Financial Planner and a Self Managed Superannuation Fund (SMSF) Specialist Advisor TM said after three decades, her team is as committed as ever to providing honest and understandable advice. “Our ultimate aim is to help you achieve financial security so you can improve your quality of life,” Ursula said. As a small independently owned business we work for our clients, not a financial institution. We take the time to understand our clients’ objectives and empower them to make informed decisions. “We’re passionate about building personalised, long-term partnerships with clients. Our clients enjoy the comfort and security of dealing with people they know and trust.” Bernie Peters has been a client of Direct Advisers for 26 years and said he heard Peter Rodgers speak about the importance of financial planning at a time when he was starting to look at his longer term plans. “We know they’ve got our best interest at heart and it’s really important to have that sort of backing. It’s almost like a family,” Bernie said. “We’ve been very impressed all the way along, that’s why we’ve stayed there. We’re a
long way better off than if we had been doing it ourselves – no doubt in the world about that.” In response to their clients’ needs, Direct Advisers has recently launched a new service called Aged Pension Assist which looks after all your Centrelink needs. Ursula said dealing with Centrelink’s complex web of forms and procedures can be confusing
and time-consuming. “Whether you’re an existing or new Centrelink client, we can manage your Aged Pension on your behalf,” Ursula said. “Our clients tell us they enjoy the peace of mind of having us take the hassle out of dealing with Centrelink. “We ensure you’re receiving your maximum
entitlements and benefits, help you avoid disputes and debt repayments, and take the time to explain things properly in a way you understand.” Direct Advisers Aged Pension Assist service involves a full review, completing and submitting relevant forms, communicating directly with Centrelink and attending any interviews that may be required. KinCare allows you to plan a better life FROM July 1, 2015, all Australians with a home-care package were given a care budget made up from Government funding and personal contributions. The care budget is an important part of the new Consumer Directed Care (CDC) program, which aims to give every Australian more choice about the type of care delivered and who provides it. As we get older, we sometimes dwell on all the things we can’t do anymore and put those things first when choosing to get help. But what about the things we can still do – but
simply haven’t given much time or energy to recently? Or might be able to do, if we make some changes to how we live our lives? Setting goals can also help you find the motivation to do things that improve your well-being and relationships – and ultimately lead to even greater improvements in how you experience your life. Here are some simple examples: • Improving your nutrition and fitness strengthens your body for your favourite leisure activities • Getting continence support can
give you the confidence to attend more social events • Participating in counselling helps you renew your relationships and enjoy family events more • Learning to use tablet technology helps you connect with your community and local events. KinCare supports thousands of clients like you in developing their own care plans. In every case, we aim to help build on personal strengths, so you can enjoy more of the activities that matter to you. For more information visit www. kincare.com.au or call 1300 733 510.

Wauchope set to Show and tell By LIZZIE McLEOD WAUCHOPE really knows how to put on a great show – they have been doing it very well for 106 years. That’s why families from across the region will be heading to the Wauchope Show this Friday and Saturday (April 1 and 2). The successful show since 1910 will still be pulling crowds in with great food, local arts, and some new and exciting entertainment. “There’ll be dairy cattle, beef cattle, poultry, and goats,” said President of Wauchope Show Society, Bob Kennett. “We also have the busy pavilion full of fresh and local produce as well as garments and paintings from the locals. “Our highlight this year is that we have the lumberjacks performing. They’re timber fellers. They bring in a tank filled with 7000 litres of water and they put a log in it. There are two of them on the log and they try and throw each other off. “It’s a comedy act as well as a great performance. “This is the first time it’s happened at Wauchope Show and it’ll be on Saturday night, around 8-8.30pm.”
The animal nursery will also be a highlight of this year’s show. And of course you can’t have a country show without a tractor for the kiddies to hop up on. The Wauchope Show is not only a classic agricultural show, it is also a significant result of the history of its town and people. “The Bain family owned this ground and they sold it to the Wauchope Show Society for five shillings,” said Mr Kennett. “The Wauchope Show Society has owned it for a bit over 107 years. “Originally before that, the first four shows we had were in Port Macquarie. Port Macquarie couldn’t raise a committee and couldn’t keep it going so Wauchope said ‘we’ll do it’. And that’s how the Wauchope Show Society started. “It’s a fully volunteer show. And it’s been going stronger and stronger ever since. “It just goes to show that the volunteers are still there.” The 106th Wauchope Show will be held on Friday and Saturday April 1 and 2 at the Wauchope Showground in High Street, Wauchope, each day from 9am.

Cultural collection THE Blue Poles Café will be hosting an evening of poetry, food, drinks, and entertainment in Port Macquarie this April. The Café will be showing all new original readings, images, and music by internationally acclaimed artists Hilary Elfick, David John Malikoff, and Richard Morris. The artists will present their works in three pieces. The first piece will be a reading by David of an inspiring letter by Kamin Sherpa. Kamin tells how Sir Edmund Hillary ignited the flame of education within him and of the transformations that followed. Part two will include a reading by David of a series of poems by Hilary Elfick, with music by pianist Ben Robinson. The third piece will entail the slow burning flame of a dream and the reading of a series of poems by Hilary. Hilary will be accompanied by Mark Garrett of ‘Blokes Notes’ and will be singing to music composed by her friend and colleague, Richard Morris. Guests will also enjoy a three-course meal prepared by the Blue Poles Café. Sparkling wine, wine, beer and soft drinks will be provided on arrival and will continue to be on offer throughout the evening. An exhibition of quality images will also be available for sale, as will the books by Hilary and David. Profits will go to the Mera Primary School in Kharikhola village, Nepal - via the Rotary Club of Port Macquarie Sunrise. This entertaining presentation will take place at the Blue Poles Galley and Café at 6pm on Saturday, April 16. Tickets are $79 and bookings are essential. footytips
Great Easter, now find that coin Cowboys v Dragons (Sat, April 2, 6.30pm, Smiles Stadium, Townsville): Cows are without centre Linnett, however should still be far too strong for the Dragons. St George will probably have playmaker Benji Marshall back, but still will come up short here. • Your Local Independent tips: Cowboys. Roosters v Warriors (Sun, April 3, 2pm, Central Coast Stadium, Gosford): Toss that coin. Just depends who turns up. Both teams have mercurial players across the park, but are ridiculously inconsistent. Both teams were widely tipped to be front runners (or there-abouts), but the Warriors are 13th and the Roosters currently last. Tipping here with no confidence. • Your Local Independent tips: Warriors Eels v Panthers (Sun, April 3, 4pm, Pirtek Stadium, Sydney): The ladder (Eels 5th and Panthers 14th)
Can’t see Wayne Bennett allowing his men to be mentally soft. Heart says Titans, but… • Your Local Independent tips: Broncos. Storm v Knights (Sat, April 2, 2pm, AAMI Park, Melbourne): Watch the Storm return to their impregnatable best against the poor Knights. Craig Bellamy was fuming (now there is a surprise) after their loss to the Sharks. Again, a loss that had to come at some stage. They are at home and the agony will continue for Knights fans. • Your Local Independent tips: Storm Tigers v Sharks (Sat, April 2, 4.30pm, Campbelltown Stadium, Sydney): Get ready to toss that coin. The big play here is whether Paul Gallen is back. Early mail says he will be. Sharks have convinced the doubters they are the real deal this season and with the inspirational Gallen, they will be even better. • Your Local Independent tips: Sharks
WELL we almost took all the Easter chocolates. If you followed Your Local Independent’s tips across last weekend’s holiday break you would have finished with seven from eight. Not bad considering the average on the official NRL tipping site was 4.5. The game that cost us the perfect round was the final hurdle – the Sharkies getting over top of the Storm. Again this game is a classic example of the psychology of tipping. The Storm went into that game three from three, however the Sharks have been in good form and were at home. The fact that Melbourne had won three on the trot meant they were closer to a loss. Their previous game had also been an away win over the Warriors – always a draining physical assignment. Every weekend is tough in the NRL tipping world, but the upcoming Round 5 has several ‘toss of the coin’ games. Good luck, here we go: Sea Eagles v Rabbitohs (Thursday March 31, 7.05pm, Brookvale Oval, Sydney): The first of the ‘toss of the coin’ games. Manly are at home, but are likely to be without injured Cherry-Evans. They also laboured to get over a miss-firing Roosters last weekend. Meanwhile Souths were ordinary in their 42-12 loss to the Bulldogs. However they should have Sam and Tom Burgess back. If Sam Burgess does play, then lean towards the Rabbits. • Your Local Independent tips: Rabbitohs. Titans v Broncos (Fri April 1, 7.05pm, Cbus Super Stadium, Gold Coast): At season start Your Local Independent suggested the Titans would be a Dark Horse this season. After four rounds they are three from four and fourth on the ladder! They always lift for their clash with Brisbane, especially at home. However the Broncos are ruthless this year.

screams that the Eels should win this, however the Panthers have been the unluckiest team to date, again going down narrowly last weekend. Parra had a grinding win last weekend over the Tigers and I believe, mentally, will be looking for a breather against the Panthers. If the classy Matt Moylan makes his return to a very hungry Penrith, then even more reason for the pendulum to swing their way. • Your Local Independent tips: Panthers Bulldogs v Raiders (Mon, April 4, 7pm, Belmore Sports Ground, Sydney): Dogs have some injury doubts (James Graham), but should still be too tough for Canberra. However the Raiders will be filthy over their last act loss to the Titans, but are still short on playmakers. • Your Local Independent tips: Bulldogs

Isaac bowled over by award By CHRISTINA PARKIN FOR Year 11 student at Mackillop College, Isaac Trow, to be selected as ‘Rookie of the Year’ at the Hastings River District Cricket Association (HRDCA) presentation night for the 2015-16 season, was the pinnacle of his debut season with the Port Panthers Pirates cricket club. “I’ve been playing since I was eight years old with the junior cricket association, then I had a season with Macquarie Cricket Club before deciding to accept an offer to join Port Pirates,” explained Isaac. “They’re a club with relatively younger players, so about eight or nine of the eleven would be under 25-30 years.” The year has been a busy one for Isaac, playing both junior cricket Saturday morning, senior cricket on Saturday afternoon for the Hastings competition and then playing in the district competition on Sunday. Isaac claims the season highlight as the time he took five wickets against Comboyne and winning ‘Rookie of the Year’ came as ‘a little bit of a surprise’. Selectors, however have noted his successes in playing for the under-16s ‘Bradman Cup’ and the under-14s Country NSW ‘Kookaburra Cup’. With Mitchell Starc as Isaac’s cricketing ‘hero’, attending development camps for the Mid North Coast and North Coast have helped to hone his bowling and batting skills. Isaac is also an essential member of the Mackillop cricket team, coached by their teacher, Mr McMahon, and rates the Mackillop team as being significantly stronger than the Regional team when playing in the Lismore Diocese Schools competition. Not yet decided on a career path, Isaac has not discounted pursuing professional cricket as a career, but acknowledges the difficulty in being identified when living in a regional area. Meanwhile, Isaac claims that ‘cricket is good for meeting people and making good friends and

Hastings celebrates great season
‘Rookie of the Year’ Isaac Trow. Photo Nashypix enjoying a good competition’. It’s been a hugely successful season for Hastings Senior Cricket which began with a 7s competition that assisted in fundraising around $5,000 for Port’s Marine Rescue and the construction of their new base. A Remembrance Day T20 match under lights at Wayne Richards Park on November 11 between Coastal and Country teams, went down to the wire with the ‘Bush’ team prevailing. Wauchope celebrated a rare trifecta by winning the May Kelly Cup, Beechwood 7s and then upset the Minor Premiers Port City to win the First Grade title.

North Haven Wanderers
THE travelling bowlers are preparing for the annual ‘Jenny Taylor Day’ to be held on Sunday, April 3 at North Haven Bowling Club. This is a ‘skirts vs shirts’ day and the ladies have the bragging rights at the moment with such expressions as ‘pigs might fly’ being bandied about by both sides. Players are asked to be at the club by 9am for a 9.30am start.
Wauchope Men’s
