Joy, we salute you And ‘thank-you’ to all our local women By CHRISTINA PARKIN
MEETING Joy Smith for the first time reveals an intrepid and determined woman and it is no surprise to learn that Joy is now entering her fifth year as a vice-president for the Laurieton RSL Sub-Branch. “It’s not common to have a female on the executive – women usually take on the position of secretary,” remarked Mr Mike McClelland, President of the Laurieton RSL Sub-Branch. “Joy Smith, however, was the first female vice-president and I only know of another two in NSW.” During her two terms, Joy has introduced the initiative of more social outings for the members, including bus trips and luncheons. “More social outings gets everyone in the whole family involved and it has revitalised the membership,” said Joy. “Joy is a terrific worker – she’s a powerhouse,” remarked Mr McClelland. “Joy just gets in and organises everybody FRONT PAGE AD – I’m probably the only one she finds hard to organise. “She gets in and obtains Department of Veteran’s Affairs grants to organise the bus trips
and luncheons to commemorate Anzac Day, Vietnam and Korean Veterans Day and Christmas as well. “Joy is a busy lady as she also assists the welfare officer, Women’s Auxillary and visits our members now in the local aged care facilities. “This is in addition to raising money for the sub-branch and for Defence Care, which looks after veterans and their spouses in need of financial assistance,” concluded Mr McClelland. March 8 is International Women’s Day. This edition of Your Local Independent salutes all the hard working women across our region who play such a key role in family life, local businesses (large and small) and community organisations. One of Joy’s achievements was to have a DVD produced of the 100-year anniversary of the ANZAC Day commemoration service held at Laurieton. 2016 is also a significant anniversary of the entry of Australia into the western front during World War One. Joy served as a RAAF nurse from 1951-1954, in the Korean War. “I remember doing the needle parades,” she recalls.

Todd wants more people talking about the ‘Black Dog’ By LIZZIE McLEOD TODD Taylor knows what it’s like to be followed by the Black Dog. That is why his ride on March 20 is so important. “I did go through a struggle myself a number of years ago,” he said. “The motorcycling in general helped me, particularly the involvement in motorcycle activities and rides.” The ‘Black Dog’ is the name commonly given to depression, and Todd is the organiser of The Black Dog Ride Port Macquarie. “The Black Dog name was coined by (legendary British wartime Prime Minister) Winston Churchill, who diarised his depression as a ‘Black Dog’,” explains Todd. “And that’s where the name came from. Steve Andrews in Western Australia started the motorcycle rides a number of years ago in aid of suicide awareness. This is the third year I’ve organised the Port Macquarie local area ride. “Suicide is the leading cause of death in Australians under the age of 45 and I’ve
experienced depression before. The Black Dog ride is very personal to me and a great way to bring people together and get the community conversation about depression out in the open.” Men in particular have always struggled to open up in dealing with depression, says Todd. “Men are definitely doing it alone out there,” he says. “There’s a male stigma type of thing where they feel they can’t talk to anyone about it. The rides are a way that they can open up and get the conversation started.” The ‘Black Dog Ride’ is a great opportunity to raise awareness of depression and help suicide prevention. However, there is also something the community can do in daily life. “People can just talk to their families, friends, and work colleagues and see if they’re doing okay and if there is anything they can do for them,” suggests Todd. The ‘Black Dog Ride’ is a nationwide event. Last year’s event included 7,000 riders which helped raise funds for Lifeline services. In the 2016 event, motorcyclists will depart from 34 locations across Australia, including not
only bikes, but also car enthusiasts. Locally members of the public are encouraged to join in the fun at the Food For Less, Short Street car park in Port Macquarie from 8am on Sunday, March 20, to cheer on participants and enjoy the display of motorbikes and cars and a breakfast sausage sizzle. Departing from the Short Street car park at 9.30am, riders will first go to Laurieton, followed by a 20-minute stop at Kew, before continuing onto Wauchope. There will be a 20-minute stop at Beechwood before the trip back home to Port Macquarie to the Black Duck Brewery at 1.30pm. Raffles will also be taking place from 1pm and local bands ‘Lords of Pinball’ and ‘Rock Hard Outlaws of Rock’ will be performing. To register early and join the ride, visit www. blackdogride.com.au “I would just like to encourage all motorcyclists to come along on the ride or if you’re not a motorcycle rider you could wave to us or support us and get the conversation started in the community about depression and suicide.”

“
THE selfless task of sending a Christmas greeting to serving overseas personnel by a Year 5 student from St Agnes Primary School has been rewarded with a note of gratitude from the serving officer. Katelyn Lynch, now in Year 6, was excited to be awarded a note of thanks received from the officer in Joint Task Force 633 and a special shoulder patch at the school’s weekly assembly last Monday. It was presented to Katelyn by President Kevin Brooks and Vice President Doug Budge from the Port Macquarie Hastings National Servicemen’s Association. Katelyn had written on her card: “Dear Troops, Just wishing to say thank you for keeping us and others safe by what you are doing. Hope that you are able to see your family and loved ones over the Christmas season. We are very proud of you and what you are trying to achieve. Merry Christmas, Happy New Year and God Bless!” Dr Deane Prescott, a Science and Technology Liaison Officer, was the recipient, and they sent a letter of thanks to the Port Macquarie Support the Troops project commending the ‘wonderfully heart-warming card from a young lady’. The officer also wanted to ‘extend a very big thanks … for the support which you give to all of us who are deployed on operations … receiving a card or gift from home reinforces to each and every one of us how great a nation Australia is and a reminder of what a fantastic bunch of people our fellow Australians are’. “For the last five years, the ‘Port Nashos’ have organised for 3,000 postcards to be printed and distributed to primary schools annually in the Port Macquarie, Lake Cathie and North Haven area,” explained Mr Kevin Brooks.
Mr Kevin Brooks (left) and Mr Doug Budge present Year 6 student, Katelyn Lynch, with a note of thanks and a squadron shoulder patch as acknowledgement for her Christmas card message. Messages and Christmas greetings are written on the postcards by students, which contain an image of a beautiful Port Macquarie beach scene. They are picked up and sent to Sydney to send
overseas to all defence personnel posted out of Australia. Ginaya Yarnold, Principal of St Agnes Primary School emphasised how it great it was
that the children could have an appreciation of what service means from doing this little task. “As a strong Catholic value, this fits in well with our school focus,” said Mrs Yarnold. For young Katelyn, her own grandfather was a Vietnam Veteran and a Navy clearance diver who disposed of unexploded bombs, and received a citation for his work only three years ago. “It was really sad as only half of his navy colleagues were left to receive their citation,” said Katelyn’s mum, Ms Shari Rhook. Katelyn loves writing stories and participating in Cubs and next year will go into Scouts. “I like camping and canoeing and learning handy skills in a fun way,” said Katelyn. Doug Budge commented that they don’t often receive feedback, but can recall one time a student sending a message saying: “Dear solder (sic). I don’t know what war is about but stick it up them!”

Brought to you by
I HAVE so many things I want to say this week; I’ve been in a real quandary deciding what needs to be aired first. So here goes…I was absolutely astounded last week when I received a complaint; not that I’m adverse to constructive criticism or not used to complaints…I live by the motto “You’ll never please all of the people all the time, at best, you can please most of the people some of the time.” What absolutely blew me away this week; I had a conversation with someone who is advertising with us and to put it nicely this person was just downright rude! At the beginning of the conversation before I had even finished saying who I was, this person just launched into me! I thought we had done something seriously wrong to make this person so unhappy. The crux of the problem? Since advertising with us the phone had not, I repeat, NOT stopped ringing and the advertiser was p*%$#d off because of this? I had to pick my jaw up off my desk when I heard this…like really? I honestly couldn’t believe what I was hearing…I have never fielded a complaint stating that “my advertising is working too well” in the 10 years I’ve been in the industry…never! The upside; once I got over the shock and thought about it? We must be doing something right, so thank you to our readers supporting the local businesses that advertise with us.

Ocean Drive upgrade delay a disgrace FOR years now I have been attempting to get Port Macquarie Hastings Council (PMHC) interested in completing the upgrade of Ocean Drive through Lake Cathie proper. I have made a presentation to Council and mention it at every opportunity. The following are the facts I have obtained from various sources. Some being the appointed council administrators and senior management personnel. Somewhere around year 2000 the PMHC Asset Register alerted Council that Ocean Drive through Lake Cathie proper was in need of an upgrade. The condition of the road was inspected, and the decision was made to plan and construct an upgrade as a divided carriageway. Plans were completed and stage one of the works were completed, but the balance was
deferred owing to the blow out in the cost of the Glasshouse. Since then nothing has been done. The plans, of which I have a copy, are dated 2004, and were shovel ready then. In 2010 I met with a council representative at my home who told me then, the work had been delayed and would most likely proceed between 2012 and 2014. This then became 2018 and then I was told 2022 and 2028, or as some council official said (with a smile) maybe not in my lifetime (meaning me). The PMHC Asset Register has recently identified minor streets in Lake Cathie, Bonny Hills and Laurieton for resealing - which is being done. But Ocean Drive, which vehicles use to get to these streets has, for some reason, been put in the ‘too hard basket’. This was and continues
to be illogical. I am sure motorists, bus and truck drivers are aware of how bad the condition of the roadway is, with its more than 10,000 traffic movements a day on a two-way carriageway; part of which would be more appropriate in the third world. The increase in large and heavy vehicles is seeing a marked deterioration of the road. Ocean Drive is a designated tourist road and a major arterial road south, of Port Macquarie. Ocean Drives condition is reasonable south from Port Macquarie until the 50km sign at Lake Cathie, where it turns into an absolute disgrace. I notice PMHC has gone to tender for stages 2 and 3 of Houston Mitchell Drive. This road carries a number of vehicles, many of which go through Lake Cathie - but doesn’t
have the vehicle movements Ocean Drive does. It’s no wonder many residents of Lake Cathie and those further south are feeling resentment towards PMHC and the State Government because frankly, we get nothing but a third rate main road. The ignorance towards completing the upgrading of Ocean Drive through Lake Cathie proper has gone on long enough. No more excuses. I invite Council or any member of the senior management team to comment on anything in this letter which is not correct. Further, to explain to the rate payers why a main road, identified about 16 years ago as in need of an urgent upgrade, has not been completed. John Simon Lake Cathie

Headache to be fixed ANTHONY Pennell (Independent 18 February) say the RMS and PMHC should spend time ‘under an umbrella” at the Lake Road/Oxley Highway roundabout to find out why he and other drivers find it so difficult
to exit Sherwood Road through this intersection in peak-hour. They have already done this and found that the near continuous procession of traffic across the Sherwood Road exit is due to the Oxley Highway traffic coming from Wauchope and the Pacific Highway
merging, only 100 metres before Sherwood Road, with traffic from the Wrights Road/John Oxley Drive roundabout. When the Traffic Light system planned for Wrights Rd./John Oxley Drive is completed with the $3.1 million recently announced your problem will be fixed.
Roundabouts are a more efficient means of handling light to medium volumes of traffic at intersections and can be built at a fraction of the cost of installing and maintaining traffic lights. Mike Dibbs Port Macquarie

Meeting focus on ‘death literacy’
Macleay Valley Relay for Life Committee members (back) Sharon Fogarty, Ray Osland, Chris Hawtin, Mick Gee and Lyn Kesby and (front) Jane Walsh, Jenny Gee and Charni-Le O’Hearn, on the Kempsey Showgrounds oval where the event will take place on March 12
Relay a true life saver IN 2014 the Macleay Valley raised $50,000 for the Cancer Council’s Relay for Life event. Those vital funds went toward cancer research, community projects, and to help with travel expenses for local people who have been touched by cancer. Held every two years in the Macleay, the 2016 Relay for Life on Saturday, March 12, promises to be a great community event for all the family. It will be held at Kempsey Showground with the fun beginning at 2pm. There will be bands playing, karate, belly dance and line dance demonstrations, rides, an Easter egg hunt and Troppo Bob will perform for the children. “We’d love everyone to turn up and donate a
little to help victims of cancer and their families,” said Chairperson for the Macleay Valley Relay for Life Committee, Jenny Gee. “It doesn’t matter whether they are registered for the relay or not, just come along and join in on all the fun.” The committee will man a barbeque selling sausage and steak sandwiches, egg and bacon rolls, roast beef and gravy rolls and cold drinks. The committee is also calling for any stallholders who wish to set up on the day and help make the event even more special. There is a $30 fee, donated to the Cancer Council. Jenny said there are 200 participants making up the 20 teams registered so far. The number of participants on each team varies with some having as many as 32 volunteers and others having only six.. INCREASINGLY, people are becoming more aware of ‘death literacy’ - ensuring that a will, power of attorney, enduring guardianship and an advanced care directive have been explored and developed for their end of days. NSW Health are now encouraging patients to have an advanced directive organised prior to admission for elective surgery, should circumstances prevail that the patient’s surgery goes awry. “Many find the whole topic confronting – whether the person finds it difficult to get their family to listen and not deny their inevitable death, or they themselves avoid the discussion of what they feel is a ‘good death’ for them,” explained Annie Quadroy, from the Port Macquarie group of Dying with Dignity (DWD) NSW. “Our quarterly meetings aim to increase the community’s literacy around what a ‘good death’ is. Our next speaker is Debbie White, Nurse Practitioner with many years’ experience in palliative care addressing ‘All You Need to Know about Palliative Care’. “Her talk will reveal the philosophy of palliative care and what palliative care is in practice.” The next quarterly meeting of the Port Macquarie DWD NSW will be held on Tuesday March 8 2016, commencing at 10am and finishing around noon at The Pier, Port Panthers, Port Macquarie. There is a $5 entry, which includes morning tea. Thousands of Australians access palliative care services each year. This meeting will enable participants to know what is available in the Port Macquarie region and what to expect if they need to access such a service. Debbie White has worked in both England and Australia and is passionate about improving death literacy and providing quality end of life care. For more information about the meeting and the philosophy behind the group, please contact Annie Quadroy on 0432 048 414.

Iconic bridge on show Slim Dusty Centre hosts historic pics
STATE MATTERS

Photographer Henri Mallard captured a slice of Australian history through the lens of his trusty camera

“
AN iconic slice of Australian photographic history is on display at the Slim Dusty Centre until Sunday April 3, as part of its commitment to bring a range of cultural opportunities to the region. The Henri Mallard, Building the Sydney Harbour Bridge is a collection of photographs and film footage detailing the Bridge’s construction during the early 1900s, and is the Slim Dusty Centre’s first travelling exhibition. Born in Sydney, Henri Mallard worked at Harrington’s, a competitor of Kodak, becoming General Manager and happily testing the latest camera equipment. He was a keen amateur exhibitor and an advocate for photography. Known affectionately as the ‘Coathanger’, the Sydney Harbour Bridge is the world’s largest, but not longest, steel-arch bridge. Designed by Dr J Bradfield and officers of the NSW Department of Public Works, construction of the Bridge began in 1924. It took 1,400 men eight years to build at a cost of $4.2 million. The bridge is 1149 metres long (including approach spans), its arch spans 503 metres and the top of the arch is 134 metres above sea level. Six million hand-driven rivets, 53,000 tonnes of steel and 95,000 cubic metres of concrete were used in the bridge’s construction. The largest rivet weighed 3.5 kilograms and was 395 millimetres long. About 800 families living in the bridge’s path were relocated and not offered compensation. Sixteen men lost their lives building the bridge, which was opened on 19 March 1932. When NSW Labor Premier, Jack Lang, was about to open the bridge, member of political group The New Guard, Captain Francis De Goot, rode up on his horse and sliced the ribbon with his sword. He thought only a member of the Royal family should have opened the Bridge. Residents of Old Bar, Acushla and Hedley Murdoch, thought Mallard’s photographs were fabulous. “Building the Bridge was an amazing feat of engineering,” Hedley said. ‘When you think about how Mallard got up there, well it’s life in the raw.” Friends from Wallerawang in the NSW Central Tablelands, Gai and Tiger Felthan and Lionel and Dianne Hawkin, loved the photo exhibition and thought the movie was amazing.
Dementia friendly newsletter launch
Especially Lionel, whose Dad was the first Scott from Wallerawang to cross the Sydney Harbour Bridge on opening day. In conjunction with the Henri Mallard exhibition, the Slim Dusty Centre is holding the Building Bridges Photographic Competition. Members of the public are invited to submit their own original photographs of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, bridges in the Macleay Valley, or bridges from around the world. The competition closes on March 31 and entry forms are available at the Slim Dusty Centre, Kempsey Shire Council and Wonderland Framing, who are offering competition entrants a
special rate to print their Bridge photographs. Prizes include a family pass to the Slim Dusty Centre, a two-day pass to the Slim Dusty Country Music Festival and a custom pictureframing prize. Entry to the photographic competition is a gold-coin donation, as is entry to the Henri Mallard, Building the Sydney Harbour Bridge exhibition. DEMENTIA Friendly Community Newsletter Launched: Last week in Port Macquarie, the Minister for Ageing and Minister for Disability Services, John Ajaka launched a new Dementia Friendly Community Newsletter. The newsletter which was developed in partnership with Alzheimer’s Australia (NSW) was launched by Minister Ajaka at the opening of the new Alzheimer’s Australia office in Bridge Street. The newsletter has been delivered to over 36,500 households across the Port Macquarie electorate and I hope people take the time to read the information provided and to make any changes in lifestyle needed to reduce the risk of developing dementia. I have worked very closely with the team from Alzheimer’s Australia to ensure all of the information in the newsletter is correct, informative and useful. There are details about the upcoming Memory Walk and Jog at Westport Park on April 3 and I encourage everyone to join with me to support the event which raises funds and awareness for dementia. Tackling dementia in our community is one of my highest priorities and I am urging everyone in our local community to join supporters of the ‘dementia-friendly’ community (DFC) initiative. Minister Ajaka is as passionate about this issue as I am having seen first hand the impacts of the disease on his own family. Dementia rates are set to almost double locally by 2050 so we all have to do what we can to ensure the impacts of the disease are minimised. We have come so far in just a couple of years since we formed the Dementia Friendly Community Steering Committee with the specific aim of making our local area dementia friendly. I believe that as a community we can work together to ensure people living with dementia have the highest possible quality of life – we need to continue to develop initiatives that ensure that those living with dementia and their carers can reach their full potential through ongoing and active participation in the community. The work being undertaken by our Alzheimer’s Australia (NSW) Regional Manager North Coast Gary Thomas, DFC Project Officer Kara Nicholson, the local Dementia Friendly Community Steering Committee and the Alzheimer’s Australia team in Port Macquarie is outstanding as is the news that eight local businesses are already working towards becoming dementia friendly.

It really is a game of great skill. But you can’t be a winning card player unless you can concentrate for several hours.
Perfect test for grey matter By CHRISTINA PARKIN
IT is said that great bridge players are great liars - as are brilliant military leaders, diplomats and various politicians. Such an example is Deng Xiaoping, the man who transformed modern China, who was an avid bridge player who had a private railroad car for his games. The difficulty of weighing truth and lies is one reason that computers don’t win at bridge, whereas at the highest level of chess computers do very well. “It is a recommended sport for your brain,” explained Port Macquarie Hastings Bridge Association (PMHBA) President, Graham Gilbert. “You can start with being a good card player, but you need to take lessons to learn the system of bidding and then you might find it could take you two to three years to understand all the little nuances. “It really is a game of great skill,” remarked Mr Gilbert. “But you can’t be a winning card
Clockwise from the left is foundation member Sue Lindner, Yvonne Breakwell, and foundation members, Arthur Lindner and Patricia Hamilton enjoying a stimulating game of bridge. player unless you can concentrate for several hours.” Bridge is largely about communication, and every message a player sends - by bidding or playing a significant card - is broadcast to the player’s partner and their opponents. Bridge is not a solo activity. You need a partner with whom you must reach very detailed agreements about a myriad of situations. All this is good for the mind - bridge provides the stimulation that can help players retain their mental toughness and stave off dementia. Bridge players enjoy playing against opponents who are better than they are. “After the hand is over, bridge players will often discuss the hand,” said Sue Lindner, a foundation member of the Port Macquarie

Lighthouse Beach gets ‘Shark Station’
MEMBER For Port Macquarie, Leslie Williams has announced that a state of the art shark listening station was recently installed at Lighthouse Beach at Port Macquarie. Mrs Williams said the purpose-built listening station will provide real-time updates on the movements of tagged sharks and form an important part of the state’s integrated shark management strategy. “The real time information will be made available immediately via the Department of Primary Industries website and to Surf Life Saving NSW and other relevant groups to provide current information on the movements of the tagged sharks,” Mrs Williams said. “As soon as a tagged shark swims within about 500 metres of a listening station, an alert will be issued with its location. “Though there is no one solution to this issue - the listening station will go a long way in better informing us about if and where sharks are along our coastline. “This Government is committed to better protecting beachgoers, we know the community wants action - that’s why we are using some of the world’s best scientists, and new and emerging technologies to better protect our beachgoers,” Mrs Williams said. A total of 20 listening stations are being deployed at beaches along the NSW coastline, as part of the NSW Government’s comprehensive $16 million Shark Management Strategy.

How long have you lived in or around the Hastings? 13 years, I grew up on the North Coast going to Macksville High School, I also lived in South West Rocks for 3 years. What do you love most about the Hastings? The strong community family feel of the town and of course the beautiful variety of beaches. Where do you work and what do you love about your work? I just finished driving for Holiday Coast Connections Shuttle Bus for the past 3 and a half years. This week is my first week with Your Local Independent. I love helping people and I am looking forward to helping local businesses grow and develop for the benefit of the community. What do you like least about your work? Not very often but it would be rude and inconsiderate people. How do you start your day? I like to get up early and do some exercises and stretching and eat a good healthy breakfast. What do you do in your spare time? I love going to the beach, bodysurfing, walks and beach training. What is the achievement you are most proud of? The volunteer work I did with our local disability group ACES on Fernhill Road. Putting together a transport training program for their volunteer drivers and assisting them with driving to pick up people from their home to bring them to the centre to be involved in daily programmes.

TWO interesting things happened in December last year. Firstly, Prime Minister Turnbull launched the Federal Government’s Ideas Boom, noting in his speech that ‘entrepreneurs create jobs’. Three days later in Seattle, the two cofounders of Australian tech firm, Atlassian, watched as the company they had started in 2002 with $10,000 on their credit card, floated at a value of $8billion. From a maxed-out credit card and a good idea to $8billion and 1300 jobs is some boom! So wouldn’t it make sense for Port Macquarie to get on board? Surely Council should be doing something to attract entrepreneurs and encourage the creation of new small businesses. Sure, we may not crack an $8billion jackpot, but if we want to create good jobs, then why don’t we have a go at attracting entrepreneurs? Why can’t WE have an ideas boom? Well it turns out we already are. One of the most important features in attracting entrepreneurs is having an attractive and inspiring CBD and work environment, with all the cultural and social amenities that attract the kind of people who can create a new business. They want to live somewhere nice – with all the right facilities. It makes sense really - the things that reinforce Port Macquarie as a soughtafter tourist destination are the same things that make it a desirable place for entrepreneurs to

want to come to live and raise a family and start up a business. Right from the start, our strikingly beautiful waterfront CBD gives us the edge over anywhere else in regional Australia. The second important feature needed to attract entrepreneurs is having talented and educated people, with existing networks of small businesses. You don’t have to look too far to realise that we have hundreds of entrepreneurs living here already who have started small businesses and created jobs. They’ve helped build strong and inclusive networks with other small businesses, and their success and inspiration has bred more of the same. So what can Council do to help? Council’s main role is not really very different to what it should be doing anyway, which is to continue to enhance our place as a desirable destination, for residents, tourists, and of course, entrepreneurs.
DV offenders targeted MEMBER for Oxley Melinda Pavey has welcomed the NSW Government’s announcement of the state-wide rollout of Suspect Target Management Plans (STMP) to target repeat domestic violence offenders. The rollout, which started this week, follows promising results during the fivemonth trial in the St George Local Area Command. Ms Pavey said the NSW Government is supporting victims and targeting perpetrators of this insidious crime to stop the violence and keep victims safe. “Sadly, too many people in our community suffer domestic and family violence at the hands of someone they know and trust,” Mrs Pavey said. The NSW Government is determined to put an end to this. Suspect Target Management Plans put the focus on the perpetrator to break the cycle of violence.” STMP are a standardised, coordinated approach to manage repeat offenders and have been used by the NSW Police Force since 2005 targeting offenders of other major crimes including robbery and break and enter crime. Deputy Premier and Minister for Police Troy Grant said police were often first through the door when dealing with victims of domestic violence. People needing information, help or support should call 1800 RESPECT on 1800 737 732 or the 24 hour Domestic Violence Line on 1800 656 463.
Humpty’s origins are cannon fodder my
A RECENT mention in this column of Jane Taylor sitting in her upstairs bedroom in Colchester and writing Twinkle Twinkle Little Star produced a flurry of questions. I thought I would bring you again the story of Jane Taylor and of Humpty Dumpty, which also owed its origins to the same English town. Actually, the story goes that Old King Cole and Daniel Defoe’s Moll Flanders have local links also. Jane Taylor spent much of her time in an upstairs bedroom in West Stockwell Street, in 1806 in the English town of Colchester and she dabbled in poetry, as did other members of her family. Her biggest claim to fame was in writing the five-verses of The Star. You know the poem: ‘Twinkle, twinkle, little star, how I wonder what you are’, and so on. Later this poem was set to music (some say Mozart’s music). Incidentally, another story: I was going through a European town and somebody remarked ‘that building needs some renovation work’ and the guide said ‘that’s where Mozart was born’ and continued walking. People are rarely acknowledged in their home town. Details about Jane Taylor were given to me a long time ago by Catherine Newley, from the tourist association in or near Colchester. It was almost an after-thought in response to my
LAURIE BARBER
enquiry about Humpty Dumpty. Ages ago I read a report, headed ‘Humpty Dumpty falls from favour’, suggesting Australian parents were losing the capacity to recite nursery rhymes. My trail led to the old English city of Colchester, 90kms north-east of London, population 104,000. Local businesses included the Humpty Dumpty Brewery and the Humpty Dumpty Pre-school. The Humpty Dumpty story goes like this: ‘Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall, Humpty Dumpty had a great fall. All the king’s horses and all the king’s men, Couldn’t put Humpty together again.’ The most popular story said Humpty was a cannon used to defend Colchester during the English Civil War in 1648. It was mounted on top of the St Mary’s at the Wall Church and manned by a bloke called Thompson. Colchester, a Royalist

stronghold, was besieged by Roundheads for 11 weeks before falling. The church tower was hit by cannon fire, sending Humpty to the ground. The Royalists’ attempts to mend the cannon were unsuccessful. Tourists who go to the site can read the verse that says: ‘In Sixteen Hundred and Forty-Eight When England suffered the pains of state The Roundheads lay siege to Colchester town Where the king’s men still fought for the crown There One-Eyed Thompson stood on the wall A gunner of deadliest aim of all From St. Mary’s Tower his cannon he fired Humpty-Dumpty was its name Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall...’ Catherine Newley, assistant curator of community history at Colchester, wrote me a long letter, explaining the story. She added in passing that the name Colchester was said to hark back to the medieval story of Old King Cole and his daughter, St Helena. However, if you should be passing through Colchester and you want to see where Humpty Dumpty fell off that wall, go to St Mary at the Walls Church, Colchester, dig a hole in the road and see what you can find. lauriebarber.com;lbword@midcoast.com.au

Port Macquarie X-ray - getting people moving again
Imaging leads to reduced pain THE usual purpose of CT scans and ultrasounds is for the visualisation of organs and tissues to enable accurate diagnosis of medical conditions. However, do you know that Port Macquarie X-Ray offers a personalised pain management service using these same imaging techniques? Port Macquarie X-Ray uses the latest technology combined with traditional medical procedures to compare what is identified on the scan with the degree and description of the pain that the patient is experiencing - thus enabling more accurate pain management. Dr Bob Marshall, pictured, is the specialist
radiologist who has been using this pain management technique for over 20 years to benefit thousands of patients. Dr Marshall administers between 30 and 40 injections a week, as directed by the referring GP or specialist. Supporting Dr Marshall on each procedure are nurses Debbie and Maggie and two radiographers
monitoring the procedure and gathering data for later analysis and reporting. “This intervention can allow for substantial pain relief from chronic conditions, such as for lower back, tendon or joint pain,” explained Dr Marshall. “It can provide substantial relief with severe and persistent pain, and works best when there is
an obvious source of abnormality identified, like a disc protrusion.” If you suffer joint pain, consult your doctor and discuss the options available to you. Port Macquarie X-Ray and Dr Bob Marshall are here to support your doctor’s health recommendations.
Do you suffer joint pain? Celebrate Indigenous culture PORT Macquarie has played a major part in Australia’s colonial history, being one of the early penal colony sites and also becoming a key location for ship-based transport of timber and agricultural products from the mid north coast in the early days. What is also now coming more and more to the fore is our rich Aboriginal heritage and significant cultural sites across the region. This will hopefully lead to a growing tourist industry based on Aboriginal culture and heritage, as well as promoting bush food and medicine as potential niche horticulture crops. Thanks to the tireless work of Uncle Bill O’Brien for the Birpai nation, many of us have become aware of the Aboriginal lifestyle in this area before European arrival. And with his daughter Kelly O’Brien working for the local council, a major awareness raising program about Aboriginal history and culture is expanding around our region. The community college hopes to keep working closely with Birpai and Bunyah land councils in the future, to offer sites maintenance and ranger training courses to those community members who are interested, as well as offering the ongoing program in Aboriginal History and Cultural Development, which Uncle Bill O’Brien and his friend and colleague John Brownsberger started running last year. We would like to hear from any community members interested in these areas of learning, and those who would like to help the land councils in their work developing opportunities for young and older members of their communities. Please gives us a call to find out more, or come and visit us at SkillsLink Training, 77 Hastings River Drive. From left, Holly Morling, Sandy Mackenzie, Katharine Causer and Christina Parkin form the small female ‘front of house’ team bringing the next edition of Your Local Independent to you
Your Independent women WITH International Women’s Day being celebrated next Tuesday March 8, where the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women are promoted, we at ‘Your Local Independent’ thought it was appropriate for the readers to get to know the female powerhouse behind our weekly achievement, which is the next edition. Starting at the top, Sandy McKenzie was originally employed when the paper began in 2009 as a sales representative and is the longest standing staff member. Sandy, with her husband Craig’s support, purchased the newspaper in November, 2014. Sandy also writes her column, does a few speaking engagements and in her spare time, makes the business decisions – generally with a wine in her hand. As a hands-on owner, Sandy enjoys meeting an amazing variety of people, being involved in the community every day to
build great relationships and working with such a dedicated and passionate team. “If I could wave a magic wand, I would like to see everyone with an attitude of gratitude – the majority of us are so blessed; unfortunately it just never seems to be enough,” states Sandy. Holly Morling has been with Your Local Independent for several stints, most recently since March 2015. Holly now liaises with clients to assist with their ad content, and compiles the Gig Guide, What’s On and Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down columns. Holly also enjoys meeting great people from our community and the laughs she gets out of reading the submissions for Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down. “If I could wave a magic wand, I would fix rude people on the phone,” said Holly. Katharine Causer is the Sales Coordinator and has looked after the accounts for the 18 months she has been with Your Local Independent.
Katharine enjoys the variation in her role – ‘it’s never a dull day’. Again, Katharine cites “the opportunity to deal with some amazing people in the community and the satisfaction each week of seeing the end product, which everyone has worked so hard to do as a small team” as the parts of her role that she enjoys. Katharine’s magic wand would fix world hunger. The latest female addition to the team is Christina Parkin, who has been on board as the journalist since November, 2015. Having worked for many years in corporate media and PR, Christina is also enjoying meeting and chatting with the amazing people in our community and seeking out “their story – everyone has a story”, according to Christina. “My magic wand would remove dishonesty and replace it with authenticity, so there are no hidden agendas,” says Christina.
“Big tall blokes would keel over as they were lined up, ready to be jabbed. “My husband, Joseph Henry John Smith joined the Air Force after World War Two in 1948 and served in Japan and Korea. “In those days, you had to leave once you got married – it was a good thing too, as defence force life puts too much pressure on a couple if both are enlisted. “My husband suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder, which they didn’t recognise then. They just didn’t talk about what they had been through. I didn’t join the RSL until the kids went to school as my commitment was looking after them and my husband. “We’ve lived in Dunbogan for thirty-two years, but my husband died seven years ago, so I have more time to devote to the sub-branch now,” said Mrs Smith. How does a female survive in a maledominated club? “I sometimes feel my opinion is discounted, but I just keep at it,” says Mrs Smith. “As a newcomer to the Camden Haven in 2006, I soon learnt that you don’t say too much against Joy Smith – she has quite a loyal following,” explained Mr McClelland. “In fact, when I hadn’t quite sold all the 200 club tickets one day, I got chipped because ‘Joy wouldn’t have let that happen’!”
Red Cross calling
ONE of Australia’s most enduring charity events Red Cross Calling begins next week with an amazing number of fundraising events throughout March to support the work of Red Cross. Red Cross is asking us to rally with Red Cross branches, schools, community groups and workplaces to help make a real difference to the lives of people in need. On Friday 11th March school children will be out in force around the country for Red Cross Calling with door-to-door collections and local fundraising events.

Tired rooms brought to life Resurfacing the answer for dated bathroom, kitchen
IF you’re buying or selling your home the first rooms that you usually look at are the kitchen and bathroom. That’s because we spend most of the time in these areas and we like these to be clean and welcoming. When buying your home you’re looking at these rooms to see what costs you need to factor in to renovate or update them to your own personal taste.
When selling you want to add value without spending too much money to increase your sale price and the chances of getting the quick sale. No one wants to walk into a dark kitchen with orange or red undertones, bringing back these rooms to neutral colours, white or offwhite cabinetry and simple stone look benchtops will increase the appeal of your home to a wider range of buyers. Many property owners have already benefited
from the dramatic changes resurfacing has produced and for a lot less time, money and bother than a slow, messy renovation. As seen on Selling Houses Australia the changes to these rooms can make all the difference. If you have a tired, dated kitchen, resurfacing can be a great way to bring in a fresh modern look transforming old to new in just a few days. Almost any area in the bathroom and kitchen can be resurfaced including baths, basins,
Money a key factor in broken homes AUSTRALIANS have a traditional view of money and relationships according to wealth management company Yellow Brick Road. Yellow Brick Road’s recent Valentine’s Day poll revealed interesting insights into the moment Australians consider appropriate for a couple to merge finances. The most popular moment to merge finances was after the wedding (40%) with other moments ranking lower, including when you move in together (23%), keeping them separate forever (16%), upon engagement (10%) and before any major commitment is made (9%). Yellow Brick Road Spokesperson Lyndsey Douglas said money is often a reflection of personal values and one of the most common causes of fights in relationships. “Whilst there is no blanket best practice for couples and their finances, as the relationship progresses it is important to have open and honest conversations about money. Generally, if you’re discussing moving in together, getting engaged or married – it’s time to have the conversation,” Ms Douglas said. Finances are still the leading cause of divorce with Relationship Australia’s research showing that 37% of women and 30% of men attributed financial stress as the cause of their breakup. “Different spending habits can cause catastrophic fights that recur throughout the relationship. Without direct discussion, negotiation and awareness of each person’s individual money personality type, these fights can be the cause of major relationship breakdowns.” Ms Douglas said when the timing is right, all couples should do a few key things to get
started on a positive financial path together: • Plan for the future: Determine your hopes and dreams for the future as a couple and then reverse engineer them into a plan. Getting an expert to guide you through important financial decisions as a new couple will make a big difference in getting you on track. • Pay off debt: Make a plan to eliminate high-interest debt (usually credit cards) as quickly as possible. It also may be a good time to pay down ‘good debt’ (your mortgage). With interest rates at record lows, reducing your interest rate and keeping your payments the same can save thousands of dollars in interest off the life of your loan. • Create a savings plan: Know what you want to do with your money, how much you’ll need and what you need to do to get there.
Goals don’t only give you a target to aim for, they also produce a ‘reward’. It may be a holiday you’re saving for or a house deposit or the down-payment on a new car. Whatever your savings goal, name it and give it a monetary value. • Have a financial security blanket: Putting aside money in an emergency fund is a great idea but one of the best ways to protect your family and assets as a newly married couple is to get proper insurances in place. • Protect your income: A relationship will be seriously challenged if your household income, or your ability to pay off your home, is halved due to accident or illness. Make sure your income is covered, and your mortgage repayments too.
vanities, kitchen cupboards, bench-tops, splashbacks and wall tiles. “The kitchen area is much brighter, looks tidier and more presentable. I’m sure our friends will believe we’ve had our kitchen totally replaced,” said Jim & Helena, who recently had resurfacing done through North Coast Resurfacing. Public can help reduce dumping MEMBER for Oxley Melinda Pavey says residents can now use their smart phones to report any illegal dumping activity – anytime, anywhere – using the NSW government’s illegal dumping reporting portal. Mrs Pavey said people could report the type of waste, and its GPS location and, upload photos, once they had registered with RIDonline. “The Environment Protection Authority (EPA), councils and Regional Illegal Dumping (RID) squads will then use this information to investigate illegal dumping incidents,” she said. “The information people provide can lead to fines or clean-up notices being issued, which will help curb this unsightly problem in our community.” Mrs Pavey said RIDonline would also help the EPA and councils build a clearer picture of illegal dumping trends across the state. The portal opened to the EPA, councils, RID squads and public land managers in September. Since then more than 5,500 reports involving more than 20,000 tonnes of illegally dumped waste across more than 70 local government areas have been reported on the portal. Similarly, the EPA received almost 12,000 reports of littering from vehicles on the Report to EPA portal and subsequently issued more than 6,500 fines since April. The government has allocated $58 million over five years to tackle illegal dumping as part of the $465.7 million Waste Less Recycle More initiative. The penalties for illegal dumping are up to $15,000 in fines and potential gaol time for anybody caught illegally dumping within five years of a prior illegal dumping conviction.

Kempsey moving to three bins KEMPSEY Shire Council has conducted a detailed waste review and is proposing a series of measures aimed at improving the future of waste management for the Macleay Valley. The proposed changes, which involve changes to bin sizes and collection frequencies, are aimed at saving money for the majority of residents, keeping community costs down over the long term, increasing
resource recovery, and reducing the amount of waste going to the local landfill. When the new kerbside collection contract commences mid next year, council proposes to introduce best practice waste management arrangements including a weekly green bin for food and garden organics for all residents and a move to a fortnightly red rubbish bin collection.
Contact Eddy 0408 337 253
Recent audits show that residents can potentially reduce their red bin contents by more than half by sorting all food and garden waste into the green bin and placing all household recyclables into the yellow bin. About 50% of the weight of red bin contents was found to be compostable, while 20% was recyclable. Kempsey Shire Council General Manager David Rawlings said the new waste contract provided council with an opportunity to meet targets set by the EPA and reduce the increasing cost of the State Government Waste Levy to the community. “If we do nothing, waste costs will continue to rise. The savings that come about as a result of the new service will be passed back to households through reduced waste charges,” Mr Rawlings said. “At this stage we envisage that the majority of residents could save up to $67 a year in the waste component of their rates if we all sort our waste properly. “Changes to bin sizes are likely to mean an increase in total waste capacity for the majority of residents over a fortnightly period, so the key for households will be to ensure they are putting their waste in the right place.” Mr Rawlings said the Kempsey community has already made positive improvements to waste management, including being one of the top communities in the national Mobile Muster, the success of the static and mobile Community Recycling Centres, and the take up of the Kitchen Food Waste Bin. “Now it’s time for us to tackle red bin waste in order to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill and to improve resource recovery. Waste sent to the local landfill costs the community twice as much as waste diverted into the recycling or organics streams.” Council will release a Request for Tender for the new waste contract over the coming months. Final details of the new arrangements will be known once the successful contractor has been appointed in mid 2016. Residents will then be informed about the changes, their options, key dates and what they can do to prepare for the new service to start on 1 July 2017. Council has already put several measures in place to help residents make the transition including access to a Kitchen Food Waste Bin to help separate all food waste for the green bin and waste vouchers sent out with rate notices that can be used to take rubbish to the tip for free. Mr Rawlings said: “We have applied for EPA funding to offset the cost of moving to a three bin system for those currently receiving a two bin service, and to provide new Kitchen Food Waste Bins to anyone receiving a green bin for the first time. “We have a range of other strategies to help meet the diversion targets.” Council will run a waste education and information campaign to help residents sort and save. KSC’s website will be updated regularly to inform residents about the proposed changes to their waste service. www.kempsey.nsw.gov.au/waste

Telstra to ‘Check-In’ with locals A NATIONWIDE initiative will be rolling into several Mid North Coast communities next week to assist customers with their tech issues face-toface. A Telstra ‘Check-In’ store-on-wheels will visit Laurieton, Wauchope, Kempsey and South West Rocks from Tuesday March 8 complete with Telstra technicians and customer service representatives. North West NSW Telstra Country Wide Area General Manager, Catherine Smith, said she hoped to make more visits to smaller towns and communities, more often. “Although we have stores in most major regional centres, we do recognise there are some customers who can’t travel, sometimes long distances, to get to their closest Telstra shop” she said. “We wanted to get out and visit our customers on the Mid North Coast to help them get the most from their Telstra products and services. “I hope tours like this will fill the gap for people who can’t have their problems and questions solved over the phone and internet.” In addition to offering local technical advice and tackling any issues customers might be experiencing, Telstra will donate $1 for each customer they speak with to local charities: • Endeavour mental health recovery clubhouse (Laurieton and Wauchope); • Macleay Valley Home Hospice (Kempsey and South West Rocks). The Telstra Check-In Bus will be rolling into town on the following dates: Laurieton – Tuesday March 8, 10am - 4pm, Opposite the Laurieton Cinema, Laurieton. Wauchope – Wednesday March 9, 10am - 4pm, IGA Co-Op carpark, Hastings Street Wauchope. Kempsey – Thursday March 10, 10am - 4pm, West Kempsey Post Office. Community invited into River Festival THE only place to be on September 24 2016 is the Macleay River Festival. Not only has the date been announced for this festival, but the festival organisers are opening up to the community and collecting ideas and proposals to make this year’s show the best yet. “We are starting to meet with community members about how they would like to be involved and what they would like to help happen on the day,” said Annabel Lines, Community Projects Officer at Kempsey Council. “We encourage people to come to us with their ideas and to get involved in making this year’s festival an exciting and inclusive event which we can all enjoy and be proud of. “There is so much talent in the Macleay Valley and this is a great platform to celebrate the talent and energy of our community.” Registrations are now open for stall holders and especially food and beverage vendors. Anyone local who makes, bakes, or grows their own produce will be sought after and encouraged to apply and showcase their own products. Volunteers are a crucial part of not only the day of the event, but also the planning that is involved in the time leading up to the festival. Enthusiasm, commitment, and a great sense of humour is what the event needs and volunteers
who embrace these attributes are needed. Anyone who offers their time will get a free meal ticket and refreshment on the day, as well as a Certification of Appreciation and a reference for their CV. To get involved in the Macleay River Festival, contact the Community Projects Officers, Olivia Parker on 6566 3229 or email olivia.parker@ kempsey.nsw.gov.au or contact Annabel Lines on 6566 3226, or email annabel.lines@kempsey. nsw.gov.au

Bevan Gardiner portrays famous American country western singer-songwriter John Denver
Denver’s music lives on A JOHN Denver tribute is coming to Port Macquarie this month. ‘Take Me Home, The Music and Life of John Denver’ toured Australia in 2014 when it toured regional and capital cities, and is now back again for 2016. Bevan Gardiner portrays famous American country western singer-songwriter John Denver in his only official tribute show. In 2013 Bevan Gardiner toured Australia as a support act for legendary American country singer Charley Pride. “If you close your eyes, it’s just like listening to John Denver,” said Pride after listening to Gardiner. In 2007 Gardiner was performing in Aspen, Colorado for the tenth Annual John Denver Tribute Week. While he was there he met John’s mother, brother, and even performed with members of John’s original band. Some of John Denver’s more well-known songs are ‘Take Me Home, Country Roads’, ‘Annie’s Song’, ‘Rocky Mountain High’, ‘Thank God I’m a Country Boy’, and ‘Sunshine on My Shoulders’. He recorded and performed with an acoustic guitar and sang about nature, his love for music,

and relationship trials. Bevan Gardiner is partially sighted and can only see people as silhouettes. However, this has never stopped him from following his musical passion. He has been passionate about music and has been a fan of John Denver since he was young and first heard a John Denver cassette tape while on a family holiday. At just seven years of age he was taken back by Denver’s music and was so inspired with the purity of his music that he then decided he wanted to sing and play just like his idol. Five international musicians will be accompanying Gardiner on his tour led by Canadian Musical Director David Walker and talented female vocalist Georgie Daniell. Combined, the musical talent creates the ultimate John Denver experience. Such accuracy and feeling leads the audience back into the John Denver era. The show will also include exclusive film footage of John Denver through his career, personal life, and his love for the environment. ‘Take Me Home, The Music and Life of John Denver’ will be coming to Port Macquarie on Sunday, March 20, 2016, at the Glasshouse

‘Pink Jacket’ drawcard for would-be golfers their next ball from the position of the best ball of the team. The team of Carol Baker and Christie Christoforo, led by experienced golfer, Julieanne Stace, had the best score for the final ‘putt-off’ at the last hole. The winner of that, Christie Christoforo, won the enviable honour of having her name embroidered on the back of the perpetual ‘pink jacket’. “Everyone enjoyed themselves. The champagne and nibblies after the event allowed all to socialise and get to know each other and make new friendships,” said Chanel Hill, publicity officer for the Port Macquarie Golf Club Ladies.
THERE was no better weather last Monday to greet 55 women who were eager to try out the game of golf and be in the winning for the perpetual ‘pink jacket’ trophy. The annual event hopes to inspire potential golf tragics and the Port Macquarie Golf Club professionals, Chantale and Gordon McCallum gave some great tips before the fun nine-hole Ambrose event began. Some of the women had not even picked up a golf club before and two decided they could fit in the event before going to work. Each team had an experienced female golfer with them to mentor the ‘newbies’. Many laughs were had and friendships sparked. The nature of the event meant that everyone in the team hits

Yes! The long wait is over WINTER is coming. OK, so if you’re not a Game of Thrones fan that line will mean nothing to you. However if you are a rugby league fan it means the long wait is over. Footy is back. NRL Round One starts tonight (yes, Thursday night) so hopefully you have done your homework, checked on who has gone where during the offseason and are set for a successful tipping season. Each week Your Local Independent will give you our expert advice on who you should go for in your office/worksite/family/mates tipping comp. We realise there are sheep stations at stake here! So, here we go. Round One – March 3-7: Eels v Broncos (Pirtek Stadium, Sydney 7.05pm Thurs): Brisbane are the street-corner tip to go one better in 2016. Who can argue. Almost the same roster, add in the turbo-charged James Roberts. Wayne Bennett! But remember the Broncs started slowly in 2015. Parra have added class in Kieran Foran and Michael Jennings. The Eels will finish better than their 12th in 2015. YLI tip: Broncos. Sea Eagles v Bulldogs (Brookvale Oval,
Sydney 7.05pm Friday): Manly fans are still smarting over missing last year’s finals. Lots of new faces on and off the field – coach Trent Barrett, fiveeighth Dylan Walker and forwards Myles, Taupau, Brown and Lussick. Dogs have similar roster, but their big men have shed kilos. YLI tip: Bulldogs Raiders v Panthers (GIO Stadium, Canberra, 2pm Saturday): ‘Hook’ Griffin takes over the clipboard at the Panthers, whose 2015 was devastated by injury. Expectations remain high with more backline depth. Half Aiden Sezer is the main addition to the Raiders. YLI tip: Panthers Tigers v Warriors (Campbelltown Sports Stadium, Sydney, 4.30pm Saturday): Surely the Warriors will be the big improvers in 2016 after 13th last year. A spine of Tuivasa-Sheck, Johnson, Robson and Luke must spell success. Meanwhile the Tigers are ‘rebuilding’. YLI tip: Warriors. Cowboys v Sharks (1300SMILES Stadium, Townsville, 6.30pm Saturday): Will there be a NQ hangover? Will the Shark fairytale finally arrive. Probably too early to tell. But this is a cracking

clash to start early rumours. YLI tip: Cowboys. Roosters v Rabbitohs (Allianz Stadium, Sydney, 3pm Sunday): Talking of hangovers, the Rabbits have had their’s and big Sam is back. The Roosters will have big names missing from the side that topped the ladder in 2015. YLI tips: Rabbitohs. Titans v Newcastle: (Cbus Super Stadium, Gold Coast, 5.30pm Sunday): Each year there is one team that comes from the clouds. In 2016, our tip is the Titans. They have hit one brick wall after another over the past five years. ‘What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger’. (Coach) Nathan Brown and (halfback) Trent Hodkinson are the two big additions at the Knights. However that’s not enough to pull them much further than ‘15 Spoon. YLI tips: Titans. Storm v Dragons (AAMI Pk, Melbourne, 6pm Monday): Expect the same from Melbourne – tough, take no prisoners. But will the Dragons be the big improvers in 2016. There is confidence seeping out of the Red V camp. But far too early to give this credence. YLI tips: Storm

More gold for swim club Luke now eyes the nationals By CHRISTINA PARKIN THERE seems to be no end of talent coming out of the Port Macquarie Swimming Club and Luke Mapstone is another swimmer making a splash at the recent Country Championships held in Sydney. Luke achieved eight medals, including two individual golds for the 200m and 50m breaststroke; three silver for the 200m backstroke, 100m breaststroke and 200m individual medley; a bronze for the 100m backstroke; as well as bringing home gold for the U12 freestyle relay team and a bronze for the 200m relay medley, where Luke did the breaststroke leg. To top those achievements, Luke also broke the 12 Years 50m breastroke record. The previous record had been set in 2009 of 37.23 seconds and Luke reduced this to 35.82 seconds. “Luke is very competitive and he likes to set himself specific goals,” explained Luke’s mother, Cherie Mapstone. “He knew at the State Championships in January, what times he had to beat, so he worked very hard to achieve what he needed.” Luke’s sister, Kaitlyn, now 19, has also been a successful swimmer so Luke found himself interested in competing from the age of 5. “He often checks the times his sister did at the same age,” explained Mrs Mapstone. Luke will have to attend the National Prep meet in Sydney on March 12 to achieve a qualifying time for the nationals being held in Adelaide on March 28. Being a swimmer at national level is a costly affair for the Mapstone family as they will need to pay for airfares for Luke and a parent to Adelaide from Port Macquarie, as well as accommodation for six

Luke Mapstone pictured during afternoon training at the Port Macquarie pool nights as Luke has 4-5 days between some of the events he could be eligible for. “I love swimming and I think I did really good and I am happy with all my times at the Country Championships,” Luke said. “I like that you get to train with all your friends and then get to compete. “When I compete, I just push through the pain because I know it will pay off.” When asked about Luke’s success, one of his coaches, Fiona Connell, said: “He’s got heart – he never gives up and just keeps going, even
though he is tired and sore.” “Luke also likes to watch videos of swimming titles and of himself so he can analyse where he can improve,” explained Mrs Mapstone. Steering to success SEVEN weeks to learn to steer an outrigger canoe is an amazing feat which has earnt ‘newbie’ Sue Blackmore the respect of her fellow paddlers. “Sue has done an amazing job and we are enormously proud of Sue’s remarkable achievement,” said Garth Norris from the Port Macquarie Outrigger Club. “The job of steerer has to contend with tides, swell and wind and ensure the crew reach the end of the race as safely as possible. “It’s a tough job,” emphasised Mr Norris. The club was hoping to continue the winning streak they had at the recent Pacific Dragons regatta in Sydney at the Sydney Harbour Challenge last Saturday, February 27. They finished a credible fourth after the Gold Coast, Northern Beaches, Sydney and Port Douglas teams and this is the first year they have missed out on a medal. “It shows how much more competitive the event has become, attracting teams from all over Australia, New Zealand and Hawaii,” explained Mr Norris. “Our crew that finished fourth was competing in the masters mixed category and finished in a time of 1hr. 56mins. 45 secs, which was just two minutes behind the winner. “Sue steered our second crew, which came sixteenth in the open mixed division, but this race at 22km was a huge jump from the 9km short course that she steered to victory on February 13. “At that event, Sue Blackmore, Mignon Piper, Marty Haynes, Fiona Baker, Matt Sinclair and Wes Byrnes gave the club a perfect start with victory in the 9km open mixed short course. “Then Byrnes, Haynes and Baker backed up to join Cathy Cavanagh, Kerry Owens and Harry Fay in winning the 18km open mixed long course.” bowls were Tiger Kelly - George Henderson and Bernie Biddle.
