Saving the hungry By NIKALA SIM
HUNDREDS of children, who would have gone without, now have full bellies thanks to volunteers in the Macleay Valley. The Saving Place initiative collects food donations then distributes them to schools and organisations to be made into free meals for children. It also raises money to purchase food, through the sale of donated goods at The Saving Place shop within the Kempsey Macleay Tender Centre on 18 Nance Road. Initiative co-founder Dave Davis said that every dollar of profit made allowed them to put $8 worth of food into a child. This was because major food outlets provided The Saving Place with immense support, he said. The 67-year-old settled in Gladstone in 2013 upon returning from America, where he ran a similar program of using food donations to feed the needy. “My wife Julie and I started taking a few loaves of bread from a bakery to the Stuarts Point Community Hall on a Sunday and from that we started seeing a need,” Mr Davis said. “It’s what I call scratching the surface - if you scratch the surface and see need you can’t walk away.” The Davis’ discovered families struggling to feed their children and began to distribute food. The breakthrough came when a Smithtown Public School teacher got involved and things have blossomed from there. • Continued Page 3

New way to aid youth By NIKALA SIM

Volunteers help provide meals for kids in need • From Page 1 The Saving Place now provides free food at Smithtown and West Kempsey public schools, PCYC Kempsey and to numerous families and young people throughout the region from Nambucca Heads to Taree. PCYC Kempsey club manager Margo Clarke said the food donations assisted them to feed up to 100 children on a Friday and Saturday night. “It is great to watch the anticipation of the kids as they ask what is on the menu,” Ms Clarke said. “The kids really enjoy learning about food prep and healthy eating while at the same time gaining experience for future employment in the hospitality industry.” Self-confessed ‘old softie’ Mr Davis said it brought tears to his eyes to see so many children being fed thanks to the generosity of the community. “Youth homelessness is a massive problem with couch-surfers as young as eight picking themselves up and getting to school,” he said. Support for The Saving Place had been so amazing, he added, that they also offered care packs and take-home food packs to provide dinners. The program is run from the Davis’ home in Gladstone where their shed has been converted to a food storage facility filled with freezers. Three more box freezers are required and anyone in the position to donate is asked to get in touch. Volunteers are also needed to help deliver food to the distribution outlets and to help out in the kitchen at the PCYC Kempsey. To assist with this worthy program and help fill the bellies of our children contact Dave Davis email thesavingplace@outlook.com or phone 0457 562 277. Port Macquarie Community College CEO Valerianne Byrnes will head-up Nautilus Senior College to provide teens struggling with ‘the system’ a chance to succeed community partnerships to foster respect and inclusion. “Students just have to try to do their best and be responsive to the opportunity we provide,” Ms Byrnes said. “Success won’t come without struggle but we will be here to support you.” Intake interviews will take place in December and interested students and parents are encouraged to get in touch for more information. Phone 6583 7288, go to www.nsc.edu.au or drop in to 77 Hastings River Drive, at the bottom of Clifton Drive.

We will advocate for young people to make better choices for the future
“
A NEW high school will approach education from outside the box for those teens who have dropped out of the standard education system. Nautilus Senior College will offer year 9, 10 and transition to year 11 next year, with year 11 on offer in 2018 and year 12 in 2019. Port Macquarie Community College CEO Valerieanne Byrnes said the innovative senior school was a formalisation of its youth outreach program for young people in need. “So many young people are dropping out of school,” Ms Byrnes said. “They are either silently struggling, not turning up, or they have walked away entirely.” The Nautilus College, of which Ms Byrnes is principal, is one of 11 run by community colleges across the state. The school is based on the Alesco model based on the Latin meaning ‘to grow, to learn, to increase’. “At Nautilus each day will be a new day,” Ms Byrnes said. This approach offered a new way forward for children with social, emotional and behavioural challenges which had prevented them from achieving success to this point, she said. “We want each young person to face their behaviour, to take time out to go seek professional assistance, and to work with us on a strategy for re-engaging in education.” Three pioneering teachers, two youth support workers and students will work together to create individual learning plans which address barriers including noise, class size, the experience of nothing but failure, literacy challenges and even the perception of someone having an expectation of them, the Nautilus Senior College Principal explained. “These plans will provide students with a better behavioural model, a better pathway and will be constantly monitored and readjusted. “We will advocate for young people to make better choices for the future. “Especially we aim to include those whose lives may be complicated, challenging or require a particular understanding in order to achieve success.” Whilst Nautilus Senior College will use an innovative and non-traditional model for teaching, it was still a school with teachers, subject matter and compliance with the NSW Board of Studies and Educational Standards, Ms Byrnes said. Activities including film making, outdoor recreation, tourism, hospitality and music will form the basis of strong learning programs enhanced with many outdoor experiences and field trips to different learning sites. The technology-rich learning environment will support students to achieve a range of vocational certificates and a Record of School Achievement. Education will be delivered through

Thank God for Port Macquarie Council Peter Besseling and Tina Davis. We had a good, constructive conversation with suggestions from all. Last December, when the seniors played again I could not get any sleep. I went to the field and asked to speak to the person in charge and spoke to a woman about the noise. I also asked to see the set-up being used as Council has the volume switch pad locked so no one can change the
settings. They had a laptop plugged into the microphone socket playing music at full volume. I asked for it to be turned down. What if one of the players got injured and turned up in my ward how could I give them the quality of care they would expect? In January, the person from Council who organises sporting fixtures advised the juniors would
play in February. I wrote to her stating she should check with Peter and Lisa about our concerns. I received a reply back stating the volume switch had been set and that they contacted the ASSOCIATION and she was told that they knew about THAT MAN who complained. Name and address supplied

Government and controlling national debates. Dick identifies issues important for National voters such as importing the Adler shotgun. A divisive issue within the National Party is greyhound racing, which was initially banned by the NSW National Party (including our local members, Williams and Pavey) who were staying loyal to Mike Baird, but who backed down after the Federal Party leader, Barnaby Joyce, weighed into the debate. Dick blames the National Party for the lack of action on climate change, despite farmers being among the most at risk from this lack of action. Also the National Party is blamed for the debate on marriage equality languishing and no vote being allowed in Parliament. A National Party politician in Victoria,
Andrew Broad, has threatened to bring down the government if it allows a parliamentary vote on marriage equality. With a majority of only one, the Federal Government could be brought down by only one member. Apparently the Nationals’ constitution starts by promoting in Australia ‘a society based on Christain ethics and loyalty to the Crown’ thereby making it a religious political group. Dick describes the National Party as a party for guns, for killing dogs, for interfering in people’s personal lives and for promoting Christianity. Is this a fair reflection of the National Party or locally is there a different set of important issues? Can someone please advise? Colleen Carmody

IN order to have sustainable futures for our oceans we need smart technology instead of nets that last year in Queensland alone killed 68,000 marine species. When you consider that from the day we are born until the day we pass, all daily life has risks. Every day presents a risk one way or another. Hospitals prove that life doesn’t come with any guarantees to any of us. Steve Irwin was a great example of embracing life to the full, knowing all the risks from other species. Yet he didn’t want them killed so it limited his risks. If you swim in the ocean there will be risks, not just from sharks.
If you are worried about the risks why not choose another type of relaxation so you don’t worry about the unknown in life. Each day ‘two-legged sharks’ walk on land paying little respect to each other. That’s a risk we all face every one of us yet we still go about our lives knowing the risks. Name and address witheld

MENTAL health affects all of us in some shape or form at some stage of our lives, no matter who we are. If you don’t believe it you’re in denial. You need to stop sweeping your crap under the carpet. Thankfully over recent years, some of the stigma that has been attached to mental illness has lessened as more and more organisations work together, raise much-needed awareness and funds to help understand the many different aspects and manifestations of mental health. As someone that has experienced mental illnesses and the impacts it has on lives and being diagnosed anorexic under stress myself, a previous husband with bi-polar, a son-in-law with PSTD and an alcoholic father who battled depression, I strongly believe in opening the conversation right up. Traditionally, men don’t like to talk about anything to do with their feelings/emotions. Women on the other hand don’t need to be asked twice! Essentially, most men do not want to let anyone know they are not coping – they tend to shut down, overthink things, dredge up the past, get frustrated and once the pressure is too much to keep under wraps – KABOOM! We have a major problem, sometimes with dire outcomes. Movember is a chance to get in on the conversation – raising funds and awareness to ‘Stop men dying too young’.

Kay accepts award for all carers By SUE PATERICK FOR Kempsey local Kay Clarke receiving the NSW Carers Award–Seniors Award at a Carers Week ceremony at Parliament House last month was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Kay’s whole family was there to witness her receive the award from the Minister for Disability Services, Aging and Multiculturalism, John Ajaka, and the Member for Oxley, Melinda Pavey. “It was a lovely day and I was so proud,” Kay said. “It felt fabulous.” For Kay, though, accepting the award was not just for her, it was for everyone who cares for someone. “I always feel I’m just a person who represents all the carers,” she said. “And when I stood up to get my prize, I thought of all the people who care for their loved ones and don’t think they are special. “We call them hidden carers, and I represent them when I put forward their issues with a department or a service provider.” In mid-October, Kay received her award along with three young recipients, three senior, three families and young carers, and one community organisation. “When they read out their stories, I realised they do what I do,” she said. “Being a carers’ advocate is something I am able to do and I like helping them.” Last week, Kay relived that exciting experience at a local celebration at the Frederickton Golf Club with 30 people in attendance. She felt proud again when Melinda Pavey presented her with a bouquet of flowers and said she was a great asset to the community. Kay’s own story began 24 years ago when her son developed a severe mental illness, and she has been caring for him ever since. At the time she said there was only one mental health worker at Kempsey District

Screen NSW out to find regional creative talent SCREEN NSW has launched a new initiative to unearth filmmaking talent and content creators from regional NSW. A partnership between ABC Regional and Screen NSW, SEED: Regional Shorts offers 10 emerging creative teams grants of up to $4000 each to create a short-form production. Teams will be supported by a Screen NSW Development and Production executive, independent screen industry figures, and local ABC Regional producers, who will offer production advice and feedback on the projects to the teams. ABC Regional facilities and equipment could be made available to the teams. The finished projects will screen to a wide audience on ABC online platforms, which in 2015 had 7.4 million users per week. “This is an incredible opportunity for talented, aspiring screen creatives from regional NSW to explore their ideas and develop their capabilities. SEED gives access to finance, expertise and audiences, access which can often be challenging for emerging filmmakers outside the city,” said NSW Deputy Premier and Minister for the Arts, Troy Grant. “This will be a fantastic first step on the ladder towards a career in the screen industry.” Fiona Reynolds, Director of ABC Regional, said: “ABC Regional is thrilled to partner with Screen NSW on the SEED: Regional Shorts initiative, reaching out to emerging filmmakers in regional NSW to uncover different stories and perspectives.” SEED is designed for early career creatives, aged over 18, based in regional NSW. Applicants with feature film or television credits in their elected role are not eligible. There must be at least one woman in a key creative role. Sad loss but show goes on
New funding for arts and culture STATE MATTERS
With Leslie Williams State Member for Port Macquarie
Enthusiastic volunteers and members of Creating in the Hastings look forward to their first performance with Christmas-themed play Santa’s Elves
By NIKALA SIM EXUBERANT people, shy people and everyone in between have a new opportunity to explore their singing, dancing and acting talents. Creating in the Hastings is an inclusive afterhours group created to provide an opportunity for anyone with an interest in theatre. Co-founder and singing teacher Greta Warner has been involved in theatre all her life and, over the last decade, has been a devoted volunteer of a number of groups in the Hastings. Sadly her partner in the venture, John Jordan, recently passed away. “We had the same passion for the community and people from all walks of life,” Mrs Warner said. “We were two very different people but were a perfect team - I am creative and John was logical and a great administrator. “John was a driving force behind this journey and it has been very hard to continue but I can still hear John saying ‘Greta, the show must go on’.” The theatre group has no age or cultural bounds and embraces people with a disability.
Encouragement of ability is at the heart of Creating in the Hastings. “We give encouragement awards to members because everyone thrives when their efforts are acknowledged,” Mrs Warner said. Veteran actor at the age of 13-years, Lily Byrnes said she loves the friendship side of the theatre group and meeting new people. “I started theatre when I was 8 because mum and dad decided to get me out of the house and involved in something,” Lily said. “I was quite shy and had stage fright and it has taken me a long time to get to the point where I can take on a big role.” First-time actor Summer Cambourne said she was enjoying the dance and song. “It’s making me more confident,” the nineyear-old said. Her grandfather and Creating in the Hastings volunteer, Ross Matthews, said members’ confidence was on a high and they weren’t afraid to get in and have a go. “I love working with the kids and giving them encouragement,” he said. “It is great watching them perform, sing and learn their lines – it gives them confidence
within themselves to know they can do it.” Kylie Winn and Bianca Wright love the fact that Creating in the Hastings is a place where their disabilities fade into the background. “It is good, good, good,” said Miss Winn. “I love the plays, the singing and the director – I really like it.” “I love acting, singing, dancing and helping out with scripts,” said Miss Wright, “and soon I am going to start writing our plays.” Volunteers were needed to help out with costume, make-up, props, music, directing and lighting, wearer of all hats Mrs Warner said. The Port Macquarie group meets every Tuesday afternoon between 4.30pm and 6pm at the Conservatorium, 56 Hollingworth Street. The Wauchope group meets on Wednesdays between 4pm and 5.30pm in the CWA building next to the library on High Street. Creating in the Hastings’ first production, Santas Elves, will be performed on December 3 at the Senior Citizens Hall in Wauchope from 2pm, and at the Conservatorium Port Maquarie on December 4 at 2pm. The $10 ticket price will raise funds for future performances including a main show at the Glasshouse, 0416 019 828.
PORT Macquarie-Hastings Council will continue to deliver arts and cultural programs to the local community in 2017 after receiving NSW Government funding. The Glasshouse Regional Gallery will receive $70,000 in Program Funding as part of the Arts and Cultural Development Program (ACDP). The funding being provided will deliver innovative arts and cultural programs to the Hastings community throughout 2017. I know many people in our community who appreciate the arts and all of the benefits associated with arts and health, so this funding will help artist programs to continue to be presented at the Glasshouse. Program funding supports the NSW Government’s Create in NSW framework, which guides strategy, investment and partnerships to grow a thriving, globally connected arts and cultural sector. The Arts and Cultural Development Program is administered by Arts NSW on behalf of the NSW Government. Funds boost aims to halt violence
Students from South West Rocks Public School, Maddie, Tallulah and Brooke, helping the local community and Kempsey Shire Council to upgrade the Horseshoe Bay Playground
Lesson in ‘more hands’ By SUE PATERICK
FOR over 200 students from South West Rocks Public School, planting trees and shrubs as part of a community effort to upgrade the Horseshoe Bay playground was a unique and special experience. The idea to take part in the project was the brainchild of one of the school’s kindergarten teachers, Sarah Barrell. “I thought it would be a great opportunity for the school to get involved,” she said. After getting approval from the school’s principal, Cliff Peachman, Sarah contacted Kempsey Shire Councillor, Anna Shields. Councillor Shields thought it was a great idea because Council was trying to come up with ways to get involved with the community in new projects.
Under cloudy skies that promised rain, the children from kindergarten to year six spent Friday October 28 planting trees and shrubs to help transform their community recreation space. “All the children were very enthusiastic about the planting,” Sarah said. “We were also very grateful to Council for supplying the children with yellow drink bottles. “They all love them and keep carrying them around the playground.” Sarah also wanted to thank the amazing helpers who accompanied the children as they went down to Horseshoe Bay in groups throughout the day. Some were parents and others were community members. “It was a great day,” said Councillor Shields.
“And a wonderful opportunity for the children to be involved in something they can take ownership of for years to come. “It was good to see the smiles on all the children’s faces.” Delivered in partnership with the South West Rocks Sport and Recreation Association, Kempsey Shire Council and the community, the playground’s upgrade is a wonderful example of how great things can be achieved when everyone works together. The project has involved significant community assistance in the construction of decking, supply of materials and thousands of dollars in fundraising to purchase additional play equipment, not allocated in Council’s budget for the project.
THE Coalition Government has announced an additional $585,079 will be provided to Gurehlgam Corporation Limited as auspice for Many Rivers Family Violence Prevention Legal Service through to June, 2018. Minister for Indigenous Affairs, Nigel Scullion, and Member for Cowper, Luke Hartsuyker, said the funding came out of the $92.7 million the Coalition had allocated over four years to June 30, 2018, to ensure such legal services continued their important work. “The Many Rivers Family Violence Prevention Legal Service provides critical work to support First Australians living in Cowper who are the victims of family violence,” Mr Hartsuyker said. “This additional funding will give it the certainty to make staffing decisions and plan how best to keep delivering this vital service for our local Indigenous community.” Minister Scullion said that the Coalition was investing $25 million in a separate package of measures to reduce the violence experienced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women and children. “Violence against Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women and children has a devastating impact on communities and families,” Minister Scullion said. “Indigenous women are 34 times more likely to be hospitalised because of family violence than non-Indigenous women. Indigenous children are more than five times more likely than non-Indigenous children to be hospitalised for assault and eight times more likely to experience child abuse or neglect. “To address these shocking statistics, the issue of violence in Indigenous communities has been highlighted as a national priority under the Third Action Plan of the National Plan to Reduce Violence against Women and their Children 2010-2022.”

I work with people bereaved by suicide, I also train members of our communities and Lifeline’s Crisis supporters in suicide first aid. I’m currently running a support group for people who have survived a suicide attempt, known as “Eclipse”. This group has been 4 years in the making and we believe it to be the first of its kind in Australia. I love my work because I’m able to help others who have suffered a loss to suicide and I know the training I present saves lives – what could be better than that! What do you like least about your work? Not having enough time to do all that could be done. With 3,027 deaths by suicide last year, there is sadly so much more to be done. How do you start your day? My husband generally brings me a cup of tea in bed. I’m not a morning person! What do you do in your spare time? I do Hapkido, a Korean martial art and I go to the gym (it helps to get rid of work) and I play Candy Crush. Don’t mind a good movie too. What is the achievement you are most proud of? My 3 beautiful kids who have all grown up to be lovely people I can be friends with. Other things would be my black belt (attained at 55years) and my Suicide Prevention Australia LiFE (Living is For Everyone) award for Community Development in suicide prevention and being a Port Macquarie Hastings Citizen of the Year nominee. I also spent 30 years as a breastfeeding counsellor with the Australian Breastfeeding Association.
Greater scrutiny now on whaling BEACHES around the Port Macquarie-Hastings and Macleay Valleys areas are known to be some of the best spots on the NSW north coast for whale-watching. This peaceful pastime has become a major tourist attraction drawing large numbers of visitors to watch humpbacks, southern rights and other whales. Between May and November, these majestic mammals migrate in their thousands along the coast of NSW. Whale-watching is an industry that requires the protection of these large mammals for it (and them) to exist. Last week the Coalition Government recorded a big win at the International Whaling Commission in Slovenia with the adoption of two Australianled resolutions that will put greater pressure on Japan to end its so-called ‘scientific’ whaling and reform the Commission into a more effective organisation. The first resolution ensures so-called ‘scientific’ whaling will be subjected to greater international scrutiny. Until now, the Commission had delegated the review of scientific whaling to its Scientific Committee, with little in-depth consideration by the Commission. In introducing this resolution, Australia stressed that the Commission needed to engage more robustly in discussions on scientific whaling, form its own views and provide direction. Importantly, the resolution also ensures the
I READ somewhere once that a small fortune teller who escaped from prison was a small medium at large. I also read that Santa’s helpers were subordinate clauses. These were sent to me by a person you wouldn’t want to know. I get all sorts of mail like this from people who think I would be interested in such things. I decided that if I wrote a column about such people, the emails would stop. I could then say “I’ve covered that subject”. A word for people who receive such mail is lexiphile. I’m not sure if I qualify, but a lexiphile is supposed to be a lover of words. I have seen this word spelt as lexophile, but I’m not sure if that’s a hater of words or if the sender simply couldn’t spell. A lexicographer is the writer or compiler of a dictionary. You would think that once the dictionary has been written, there wouldn’t have any need to compile another one. What would you put in it? And what a dreary job it would be to write a dictionary. The plot would be a bit thin, for a start. So far as I can tell, the earliest use of the word lexicon in print was in1603. Until about that time

Commission takes account of the landmark ruling of the International Court of Justice in the Whaling in the Antarctic case. The second resolution, called for an independent review of the Commission to improve its transparency and accountability, and bring it into line with best practice for multilateral treaty bodies. Given the International Convention for the Regulation of Whaling is in its 70th year – it was important to ensure the Commission keeps pace with the times. This resolution was co-sponsored by Brazil, Mexico, New Zealand and the United States of America, and received unanimous support with Australia providing $200,000 to support the review. As a demonstration of Australia’s continuing leadership in cetacean conservation, the Coalition Government announced that Australia would provide an additional $1.5m to the Commission’s Southern Ocean Research Partnership.

the words in a dictionary were printed in Latin or some other language that you and I wouldn’t understand. The word comes from Greek and the word lexicon once related to a Greek dictionary for words. Gradually, English adopted other words or made up other words and English dictionaries came to the fore. Lexical related to the words or vocabulary of a language, a lexicographer related to the writer of a dictionary, lexicography was the writing of a dictionary and lexicographic related to lexicographical writing obviously. There are a lot of other words, but you and I don’t need to know what they mean. They all seem to stem from the word lexicon. LEADING animal health company Zoetis has reached its goal of raising $100,000 for mental health organisation beyondblue in an effort to support good mental health and reduce suicide rates across rural Australia. Australia loses around eight people a day to suicide, and over a year, suicide deaths are double that of the national road toll. Too many people who die by suicide are from rural farming communities. Earlier this year Zoetis became a Supporting Partner of beyondblue and launched a campaign to help raise awareness and much needed funds for the charity. For every Zoetis cattle, sheep or goat vaccine or drench sold by Zoetis between August 1 and October 30, 2016, the company donated $5, up to $100,000 to beyondblue. This goal has now been reached. “We would like to thank all the producers, resellers, veterinarians and the broader rural community for supporting this valuable cause. Your generosity has helped Zoetis raise much needed funds for beyondblue and we are proud to have partnered with the community to support mental health in rural Australia,” says Zoetis General Manager Lance Williams. “We understand the devastating effect suicide can have on rural communities given our staff travel more than two million kilometres each year servicing some of the most remote areas of Australia. Although we have reached our target of $100,000, our campaign doesn’t stop here.”

dictionary -- well, in my opinion anyway. James Boswell, who compiled a magnificent biography of Johnson, said: “He thought it right in a lexicon of our language to collect many words which had fallen into disuse.” Ambrose Bierce, who wrote The Devil’s Dictionary in 1911, didn’t seem to have much time for lexicographers. In a very long entry he said a lexicographer was doing what he could to the language “to arrest its growth”. I tried to find something by Shakespeare, but perhaps it was before his time – or he couldn’t speak Greek. Some of the sayings that were sent to me by many people in the expectation that I would be interested were: - When she saw her first strands of grey hair she thought she’d dye; - Those who get too big for their pants will be exposed in the end; - A will is a dead giveaway; - A thief who stole a calendar got twelve months; - A dentist and a manicurist who married fought tooth and nail. And those comments or something similar went on and on and on.
susan: I received the Holy Spirt while praying for a sore back when I was 12. I heard myself speaking in a language which I could stop and start. It was wonderful. When I was 19 I developed a large lump on my neck. I was in my second year at uni, everything was perfect and then I was told I had cancer. I quickly had surgery to remove it. The doctor gave me a book listing the 20 chemotherapy side effects to expect. I knew that if I asked the Lord he would protect me during the 6-months treatment. He did, as I only had four minor side effects. This was pretty awesome. After the first treatment I went back to the doctor and said ‘this chemotherapy thing is alright’. He thought I wasn’t taking the treatment seriously and said that it’s not alright. He couldn’t see the hope in me. This was in 1995. I never think is it going to come back?’ or fear other lumps and bumps. I’ve got such a blessed life.

State ‘meddling’ a bonus The Rinse Cycle By Adam Roberts - Former Councillor, Port MacquarieHastings Council
Council will be on dealing with the plan that it adopted in ensuring it was ‘Fit for the Future’. It is my understanding that the State Government fully expects council to deliver on its adopted plan to become ‘Fit for the Future’. In its submission, our council adopted a position to bridge the gap between its current position and the ‘targets’ as set out by the State Government by opting for a local-economykilling 52.4% rate rise option over 5 years.
“
It’s no secret that I would like to see much better financial management
“
EVEN though I’m recently retired as a councillor, I continue to stay abreast of the changing NSW Local Government landscape and in doing so I am able to contribute to the sector and keep the community generally informed on the bigger issues. I make no apologies for fully supporting the NSW State Governments’ reform of Local Government agenda because in my experience, this sector (particularly in the executive level management and governance of councils) needed, and still needs, some pretty solid assistance from the outside. Port Macquarie-Hastings Council was not flagged for amalgamation with any other local council as part of this reform package, which on one hand is great news for this local area, but it also provides its own challenges. The challenges for Port Macquarie-Hastings
More broadly, given there is little chance our council will be amalgamated, it could be quite easy for our council to relax its way through the next four years with seemingly little pressure to perform. It’s no secret that I would like to see much better financial management and for council to deliver roads and other critical infrastructure in a more timely and efficient way. The State Government, through recently
adopted legislation, has brought in the option of (through the Auditor General) appointing a Financial Controller to councils with a poor track record of financial management, planning and delivery on behalf of their community. This intervention is in aid of getting councils ‘back on track’ and frankly, it’s one of the best reforms I’ve seen in the whole process. Having a very intimate understanding of our council’s actual financial, strategic planning and delivery position, I am well placed to nominate our council for such support from the State Government and indeed believe that support should arrive sooner rather than later. Vinnies need a hand
Kempsey St Vincent de Paul Op Shop volunteers, from left, Sandra Peters, Ruth Usher and Maree Donaldson enjoy helping others
NEARLY every main town in Australia and overseas has a Vinnies Op Shop manned with volunteers who work tirelessly to help others in their community, but the Kempsey branch needs your support. Volunteers are needed to sort the donations when they come in and get them ready for sale, plus to serve people in the shop and make sure everything is clean and tidy. According to Kempsey Vinnies Op Shop Manager, Ruth Usher, there are all sorts of little jobs to do so every day is different. “Any help you can offer will be appreciated, even volunteering for one morning or afternoon per week can really help.” she said. “We’ve got a great team of volunteers, who want to help people who really need it. “Everyone is so welcoming, and we make a special effort to make new volunteers feel at home.” Ruth has been volunteering with the St Vincent de Paul Society in different areas for about 30 years, 15 of those have been as the Shop Manager at Kempsey. “I do love my work here,” she said. “I just love helping people and by volunteering in the shop, we’re helping raise money for our community which is really rewarding.” The funds raised through the Kempsey shop and donations stay in the Macleay Valley, going to services, programs, emergency relief and support for people experiencing homelessness or hardship. This wouldn’t be possible without the shop volunteers, so Ruth encourages people to volunteer their time. Training and support is provided, as well as morning tea. If you can spare some time to help, call into the Vinnies shop in Belgrave Street Kempsey or phone 0428 977 454.

Trading food for fines
Markets mark a special achievement FOR local artists, craftspeople and artisans, Port Macquarie’s monthly Foreshore Markets at Westport Park is an opportunity to showcase their skills and sell their work. But, for one local group, taking a stall at next Saturday’s (November 12) markets will mean much more. In fact, making sales will be almost secondary - taking part will be the real achievement. The markets will be the culmination of months of work by scores of local people living with dementia, along with staff and volunteers who support them at Hastings District Respite Care (HDRC Services) four day centres in Port Macquarie, Wauchope and Laurieton. The not-for-profit organisation has had remarkable success adapting Montessori for dementia principles into its day respite activities for people with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. Along with helping them rediscover talents, skills and interests, HDRC Services’ groundbreaking program encourages independence so they can continue living at home for as long as possible. Taking part in the markets is proof of what’s

KEMPSEY Shire Libraries will waive members existing overdue book fines in exchange for canned or long-life food as part of the Food for Fines campaign. Members are asked to donate one nonperishable food item per book to any of the shire’s libraries at Kempsey, South West Rocks, Stuarts Point and Hat Head from November 1. The amnesty ends on Tuesday, January 31, 2017, with all items collected to be donated to iCare - an initiative of the Macleay Coast Christian Outreach Centre who distribute fresh food, bread and dry goods to those in need in our community. Kempsey Shire Library’s Technical Services Officer Debbie Mills said the amnesty was a great way to encourage people to return overdue library material, while assisting the less fortunate. “You’ll not only be avoiding your library fines, but helping to restore our library’s collection as well as giving to those in need in the lead up to Christmas.” For more information, contact your local library branch or phone Kempsey Library on 6566 3210.

It makes people feel like they’ve had some sort of personal experience … an insight into Lennon - the man and his music
Waters peels back another layer By LIZZIE McLEOD
HE may have taken his popular performance ‘Lennon Through a Glass Onion’ around the globe, but famed Australian actor John Waters has a soft spot for Port Macquarie. “I’m looking forward to getting to the Glasshouse,” he said when the show’s tour dates were recently announced. “It’s one of our favourites around the country. “I think this is our fourth time at the Glasshouse. The crowds there are always great. And we are there in January so the weather is nice and the tourists are in town.” John Waters and Stewart D’Arrietta first started the show back in the early ‘90s and now 24 years later it is still a massive hit.
John Waters in ‘Lennon Through a Glass Onion’ “We performed in New York City and since not just another cover act performance of John then we’ve been to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival Lennon songs, says Waters. “It’s a theatrically and Tokyo and back to the States,” said Waters presented way of getting inside John Lennon’s in an exclusive interview with Your Local music and in his head. “It’s a mixture of songs and monologues. It Independent. “It’s been a good journey for us. It just seems makes people feel like they’ve had some sort of that the show will always find a useful light personal experience … an insight into Lennon the man and his music. And I think that’s what somewhere.” However, ‘Lennon Through a Glass Onion’ is people take away with them and what makes the
show special to them.” Playing one of the greatest musical legends of all time also has its perks. “I feel pretty privileged,” said Waters. “The persona of John Lennon means … for those who really have heard the music on radio but didn’t experience the phenomenon first hand, I am a sort of conduit, if you like, to introduce them into Lennon’s world. It catches on. It’s quite surprising how people as young as teenagers have a bit of a thing about Lennon.” Waters says there’s something special and unique about the kind of music John Lennon made, and particularly the music around that era. Expect to see Lennon’s best songs, some extraordinary talent, and some thoughtprovoking acts during Waters’ performance. “The pop industry has become much more of an industry today, grinding out tailor-made hits from a hit factory. Back in the 60s and 70s it was a little bit more individually crafted, the music had more roots, in feelings and politics.” Waters is also keeping busy outside the show. “There is the launch next year of a movie I just completed that was just shot in Western Australia and it was written and directed by Ben Elton, a great English comedian and writer,” said Waters. “I am also doing a play for the Sydney Theatre Company starting in February next year, it opens in April.” ‘Lennon Through A Glass Onion’ will be performed on Friday, January 6, at the Manning Entertainment Centre, Taree, as well as January 7 at the Glasshouse, Port Macquarie. The shows will start at 8pm and tickets are $55. Last year’s Mid North Coast Open Art Prize winning painting by Vanessa Newell, ‘The Fitting’

The Hastings Valley Fine Art Association’s 11th Summer Showcase Exhibition and Sale will be held at the Laurieton United Services Club from December 28 to January 8 and will be open daily from 10am to 5pm. A major part of this exhibition is the Mid North Coast Open Art Prize of $1000 sponsored by the Laurieton United Services Club and Camden Haven Chamber of Commerce, Tourism and Industry. Artists living on the Mid North Coast between Coffs Harbour and Great Lakes are warmly invited to enter their work in the Mid North Coast Open Art Prize. Entries close December 12. Entry forms can be downloaded from the HVFAA website www.hastingsvalleyart.net.au. A girder milestone
A MAJOR Pacific Highway milestone has been reached with the final concrete girder for the new Hastings River Bridge being lifted into place in recent days. Federal Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Darren Chester said the final girder installation meant both the bridge and the broader Pacific Highway upgrade were well and truly on track. “The bridge is expected to be open to traffic next year, when the $820 million Oxley Highway to Kundabung section of the Pacific Highway upgrade is complete,” Mr Chester said. Federal Member for Cowper Luke Hartsuyker said the new bridge over the Hastings River was one of 23 bridges being built along this section of the Pacific Highway upgrade. “The new 574-metre long bridge will become the new northbound and southbound carriageway for the Pacific Highway, carrying two lanes of traffic in each direction. A total of 150 precast, locally manufactured concrete girders have been used, supporting local jobs and the region’s economy,” Mr Hartsuyker said.

LOCAL schools will benefit from a State Government funding announcement. Member for Port Macquarie, Leslie Williams has welcomed the $46 million NSW Liberals and Nationals Government program to boost student learning through better technology in regional and remote public schools. “All 22 schools in the Port Macquarie electorate will share in the Connecting Country Schools program which will upgrade schools’ Wi-Fi access and internet capacity,” Mrs Williams said. “Digital technology is vital to student learning in a modern education system. This upgrade will allow for wireless speeds four times faster than currently available. “High-quality internet capacity is increasingly important for effective learning in today’s classrooms, where digital resources are a vital component of education. “To ensure schools make best use of their upgraded wireless and internet capability, they will be required to make an application and consult with their school community to identify how they intend to use the technology to improve teaching and learning.” Mrs Williams said the increased technological capacity will benefit students and will also provide even more opportunities for innovative classroom practices. “There is a learning gap between rural and metropolitan students which needs to be addressed. Country students deserve educational infrastructure that is as good as their city cousins,” Mrs Williams said. The Connecting Country Schools program will invest up to $46 million to boost wireless access and internet capacity in up to 13,000

Boost to social housing in regional NSW DELIVERING better outcomes for tenants and the community is the focus of reform which will see social housing in four areas of NSW managed by Community Housing Providers (CHPs). NSW Minister for Social Housing Brad Hazzard said Family and Community Services (FACS) would transfer, on a long leasehold basis, management of approximately 18,000 properties to the community sector to ensure a better experience for tenants in social housing. The NSW Government is committed to increase community housing’s management of social housing under its Future Directions reforms of social housing. Thesereforms deliver on a 2009 COAG
agreement by NSW to transfer up to 35 per cent of social housing to community housing providers. Currently 19 per cent of social housing in NSW is managed by CHPs. Mr Hazzard said the reform aims to improve services for tenants and ensure more money comes in, to provide supports for social housing tenants. “Already more than 28,000 social housing homes are managed by community housing and tenants report very high satisfaction with the level of services offered by community providers,” Mr Hazzard said. “Community housing has shown it is innovative and can help vulnerable tenants to

achieve positive outcomes such as securing employment and education. “Tenants’ lease length and lease conditions will remain the same, their income after rent will remain the same and FACS will keep tenants fully informed as their areas transition to community housing providers. “It’s also estimated an extra $1 billion will come in over the next 20 years as the Commonwealth supports tenants with rent assistance, which will allow community providers to give more supports to vulnerable people. “Currently tenants in state government managed housing get no additional funds from the Commonwealth.”
Legislation will be introduced to achieve better outcomes for tenants. There are 82 CHPs in NSW and they will be able to bid to manage portfolios of properties in four areas across the State in: the Shoalhaven, Northern Sydney, Mid North Coast and Hunter New England (excluding Newcastle and Lake Macquarie LGAs). The procurement process is expected to commence in early 2017. The Aboriginal Housing Office will undertake a separate procurement process to select Aboriginal community housing providers in these locations to manage Aboriginal Housing Office owned properties.
THE Australian and New South Wales governments have committed to a generational deal to deliver almost 100,000 jobs, more housing and better transport for New South Wales – the nation’s largest ever planning and investment partnership. The agreement promises to deliver City Deals across New South Wales. The Memorandum of Understanding sets out how governments will work together to make the State’s cities, metropolitan and regional, more liveable for the communities and businesses that they serve. The Western Sydney City Deal provides a model for these future deals, and will drive a new economy in the emerging Western City that incorporates the areas immediately around the Western Sydney Airport, and the broader region. An expected 9,000 jobs will be created by the Western Sydney Airport by the early 2030s and a further 60,000 jobs in the coming decades. Through joint Commonwealth, State and local government investment, tens of thousands of jobs will be established in the surrounding region. These jobs will be in aviation related services, but also in sectors like security, education
and training, catering, retail, warehousing, administration, communications and ICT. Rapid growth in health, education, and in logistics and advanced manufacturing in outer Western Sydney and southwest Sydney, offers great potential for new job precincts. Construction of the airport will generate $1.9 billion for the local economy, with a further $400 million across the rest of Sydney. The Western Sydney City Deal pledges to; • target additional infrastructure investment to increase public transport and reduce traffic congestion, so people can spend more time with their families • deliver more jobs closer to homes and services, with a focus on youth and indigenous training and skills development. • increase housing through better planning and density done well, and streamlining approvals across all three levels of government • support clean air, green spaces, vibrant arts and cultural initiatives. Strong collaboration across governments, local councils, and local communities is essential to the success of City Deals.
IT may all be H2O but not all water has the qualities to keep your family healthy. If it is from a source that is not clean, drinking water may contain harmful concentrations of chemicals or pathogenic micro-organisms. Clean, healthy, good looking, great tasting and sweet smelling water is the backbone of Pristine Water Systems’ promise to you. The centrally-located Mid North Coast business services Wauchope, Port Macquarie, Kempsey and Taree. Specialists in water treatment and correction Pristine Water Systems have the solution for bore, spear, well or acidic water problems. They also install and service domestic and
commercial water filtration systems for homes, boats, RVs, caravans and restaurants. Owner and operator Paul Robinson said his service was perfect for people who rely on catching their own rainwater and those who were unhappy with the quality of their current water supply irrespective of the source. Rural, town and commercial water tanks can be cleaned and sanitised whilst full to minimise water loss using QuadClean - an oxygenated process that kills harmful bacteria including E.Coli, cryptosporidium and giardia. “As an environmental scientist I am proud to be using my knowledge to benefit the community directly in their own homes,” Mr Robinson said.

PORT Macquarie Sailing Club’s 8th race of the spring series was held in another strong north easter with a runout tide which made for the steep chop associated with these conditions. The fleet was again small, with some opting not to sail in the strong conditions and others still with broken boats from past weeks. The multihull division had only 2 starters, Tony Kuhn on Stella and Jack Corthals on Harpic. After a lot of close sailing, Harpic gradually eased ahead of Stella, until with less than half a lap to go, Harpic hit a log and ripped a rudder out, causing him to retire and leaving Stella to take both the yardstick and handicap wins. There were also only 2 starters in the monohull division. Paul Robertson and Warren Sykes in Slam Dunc sailed their usual flawless race to take the wins after Stuart Symons and Ziggy Ewart in Jupiter broke their mast while going well half way through the race. Next Sunday is the 2nd round of sprint series races starting at midday, and Jeff Walsh is rostered on Duty.

Masters of softball
Fishing club’s worthy ‘catch’
XANTHE Ayton has been bitten by the Masters Games bug. This weekend she will join about 13,000 other ‘bug victims’, including a large contingent from Port Macquarie, at the 10th biennial Jupiters Pan Pacific Masters Games on the Gold Coast. Xanthe, from Port, is a ‘De Lanceys’ softball player and has loved competing in the Gold Coast event ever since she started going three games ago. “Most of us in the team have all played representative softball together when we were younger,” said Xanthe. “I joined this team when I turned 35.” For most, the games aren’t just about playing sport, it’s the camaraderie and friendships that bring them back each time. “Part of the excitement is that we just get to go away and play the sport that we love and hang out with our girlfriends for ten days,” said Xanthe. This year there is a record 43 sports at the games from archery to diving, from football to sailing, and this year will also include the new additions of table tennis and standup paddling. The event, from November 5-13, also includes eight nights of entertainment to keep all of the competitors and their supporters happy. “We love the entertainment side of it as well,” Xanthe said. “Every night they have great entertainment. Last time we went they had an 80s night, so our whole team dressed up for it. We all went out together and had a great night.” Xanthe said her and her teammates also enjoy the shopping, resorts, spas, and cocktails that the Gold Coast has to offer. The ‘Delanceys’ have played in both Division A and division B and have come home
PORT Macquarie Game Fishing Club members are accustomed to breaking records, but their latest effort has surprised even their president. Janeck Kaczorowski delivered a record $3080 donation to the Mid North Coast Cancer Institute (MNCCI) this week – the proceeds of the club’s 32nd annual deep-sea fishing tournament charity day, held each year in memory of much-loved fishers Tammy and Richard Kirkby. The memorial charity day is an integral part of the famous Golden Lure Tournament, a nine-day event which attracts competitors from throughout Australia. The charity day is a tribute to a Port Macquarie couple, who were avid supporters of the game fishing club, by raising funds in their name and donating the money to the Mid North Coast Cancer Institute to help support other local families affected by cancer. Mr Kaczorowski said the record donation was due to growing support for the charity day by visiting skippers, as well as the ongoing support of locals and the day’s sponsors, which include Northpoint Apartments and The Observatory Apartments. The $3000 gift, which is more than double the 2014 donation and a remarkable $1000 improvement on last year’s donation, will provide tangible support to local cancer patients and their families. MNCCI Nursing Unit Manager Jenny Baroutis said gifts such as the Game Fishing Club’s help patients and their families face the financial realities of cancer treatment and, in some cases, reduced family income. “While ever cancer impacts on people’s lives, there will be a need for additional support,” Ms Baroutis said. “We simply wouldn’t be able to help these families without the support of our community and the wonderful clubs and organisations, such as the Game Fishing Club.”

The De Lanceys Port Macquarie softball team will be among about 13,000 Masters Games competitors on the Gold Coast this weekend with silver medals. However, they encourage all sports lovers to get out there and give it a go, and there definitely is no use-by date for mature sports lovers. “I would encourage anyone to go,” she says. “It’s an amazing thing to experience. If you are still fit and healthy enough to play sport, just have a go at it because it’s a lot of fun, it’s a great experience.” Events Management Queensland CEO Cameron Hart said all indicators pointed to a very successful 10th birthday for the games. “Entry numbers remain very strong and this year we will have a record number of 43 sports,” he said. “A lot has changed since those first games in 1998. Back then there were 9,383 competitors across 27 sports. Now we can proudly boast to be the world’s biggest biennial masters games,
