Seniors - never too late to start planning

A SENIORS advocacy group is strongly urging the Mid North Coast’s older residents to start future planning now. It’s been a busy year already for the Seniors Rights Service. So far they have been an advocate for and assisted over 1000 seniors, held a national ‘Elder Abuse’ conference, and educated communities across New South Wales on seniors’ rights. “The main issue for seniors is future planning,” said Jill McDonnell, Advocate Education Officer for Seniors Rights Service. “Have you got things in place like your enduring power of attorney or enduring guardian? How long ago did you write your will? Have you thought about your advance care directive? “And then the next most important thing is, anyone who is 65 years or older, even if you aren’t in need of aged care services at the moment, it doesn’t matter, it’s important that you register with ‘My Aged Care’. Get your registration number with them and keep it in a safe place and when the time comes when you are looking

for aged care services, you’ve already got that number.” There are also other serious issues that are being raised in 2018 regarding seniors’ wellbeing. “Because we have such a large population of older people on the Mid North Coast, elder abuse is a concern and it’s something that people are uncomfortable talking about,” Jill said. “But it’s something we all need to be aware of in the community and we all need to look out for each other - especially older people and our older neighbours and friends.” Seniors Rights Service is a community organisation that provides advice, assistance, and education to older people in New South Wales. A big role for Seniors Rights Service is in educating communities. Seniors Rights Service will be putting on a forum on June 4 at the Westport Club with guest speaker Dr Kay Patterson, Age Discrimination Commissioner. “We’re a state-wide service, but we are only a small organisation so we do a lot of our work over the phone with people,” explained Jill. • Continued Page 3

THE historic hamlet of Comboyne is rolling out the red carpet for old and new visitors next weekend. Residents of this hinterland gem have organized a ‘Back to Comboyne’ event on May 5-6 with plenty of locals involved in giving visitors a glimpse of the past and present. “Alan Latimore will be opening his wonderful private collection of historic farm machinery and tractors on both days of the event,” said Donna Lance, who is a member of the organizing committee for the weekend. “There are a lot of vintage car enthusiasts in the area who will really appreciate seeing the vintage farm machinery. “We are also launching the Comboyne Heritage Cookbook, which will hopefully be a fundraiser to restore the Historical Museum which is in a bad state, so we need a lot of support to get that up and running.” The event, which is being held in conjunction with the Oxley Bicentenary, showcases the town’s true spirit – its hospitality, its scenery, and its history. “Comboyne is a quaint little township with a lot of history and certainly worth visiting,”

Donna said. “It’s a very pretty place, and it’s only half an hour from Wauchope and that’s why a lot of people visit the area. It’s set on a volcanic plateau so it’s very fertile and has a very beautiful climate and there are lots of interesting things to do. “It’s been a potato growing area, but recently it’s changed to growing avocados and blueberries so that’s seen a big change, but there is still lots of dairy cattle around too.” There will be a full program of events taking place on the first weekend of May, which will bring people together to celebrate the farming and pioneering history of the region. Saturday May 5 will begin with informal morning walks around Comboyne and trips to local waterfalls and rainforests, followed by an art and sculpture exhibition at ‘The Old Church’ on Hill Street from 10am-2pm. Alan Latimore’s private collection of farm machinery and tractors will also take place on Hill Street. Visitors can brush up on their history at the Comboyne War Memorial Hall from 10am, and at 3pm the ‘Nano Symphony’ will be performing a concert at the War Memorial Hall in aid of the Mid North Coast Refugee Support Group. Tickets are $20 for adults and $15 for concession.
Sunday May 6 will begin with a visit to the Comboyne Museum from 9am, followed by lunch at the Comboyne Showgrounds from 12.30pm. Don’t miss out on visiting the Historical Display of photos and artefacts in the Billabong building at the Showground where you can swap and share photos, so bring a USB stick and use the scanners to capture these memories to take home. Also, be one of the first to see and purchase the new Comboyne Heritage Cookbook, prepared in consultation with Charles Sturt University, Port Macquarie. “This is not an annual event, so it’s definitely something different for our locals,” said Donna. “I’ve been living in Comboyne for 30 years and I’m very proud of what we have here and I think this event will bring in hundreds of people to our town.” So, get to Comboyne for the ‘Back to Comboyne’ weekend event on Saturday May 5 and Sunday May 6. Our solicitors give free legal advice to older people in the community, so that’s anyone over the age of 60 or if you are an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander, then anyone over the age of 50. “We do lots of information sessions, we go to lots of forums ourselves and provide information,” said Jill. “We talk to community groups, and as an advocate, one of our roles is to talk to residents in aged care homes and staff in aged care homes about residents’ rights. The group up here who is organizing the forum, we are all a part of the Hastings Elder Abuse Prevention Network. There’s a group of five of us who are a part of that network and we meet up regularly with other professional people in the area and work on issues around prevention of elder abuse.” Issues that Seniors Rights Service can help with include consumer issues such as debt management and unfair contracts, human rights such as elder abuse, planning ahead - such as wills, power of attorney, and guardianship, - and accommodation issues. Their solicitors can provide advice for seniors, for example to residents of retirement villages and issues from disputes with management or interpretation of contracts. “The Mid North Coast is a great place for seniors because it has lots of community organisations, particularly in Port Macquarie and Wauchope, and I’ve heard from people that our health services up here are really good,” Jill said. “People in the community just need to know who they can talk to, who can help them with their issues, and really we are just a phone call away, so give us a call. And if we can’t help you, we will certainly refer you to someone who can.” The Seniors Rights Service’s upcoming forum will take place on June 4 at the Westport Club, Port Macquarie. The first session will take place from 10am-2pm and will focus on seniors rights and respect to older people in the community. This is open for anyone and is a free event. The afternoon session is a professional session for people who work closely with seniors and takes place from 1pm-4pm. Refugee cuts ‘heartless’
I AM writing in my capacity as President of the Mid North Coast Refugee Support Group to alert your readers to the plan to make cuts to assistance to thousands of people seeking protection while living in the Australian community who will be at risk of destitution and homelessness due to the latest government move to completely cut income support for people who need it the most. The government is planning to make cuts to the Status Resolution Support Service (SRSS) program that provides a basic living allowance (typically 89% of Newstart allowance, equating to just $247 per week), casework support, assistance in finding housing, and access to torture and trauma counselling. People waiting for a decision about their claim for protection receive these supports. The Refugee Council of Australia points out that the people who would be affected include fathers, mothers, young people and children who are part of our schools, our workplaces, and our communities. Many still have years before a decision will be known on their status. What are they to do in the meantime without any income? This information comes from 95 other organisations from the refugee council to Save the Children and you can get details by accessing the website on https:// www.refugeecouncil.org.au
The government needs to take a step back and remember for a second that we are talking about people – people who have escaped war and risked death by traveling the long treacherous journey to Australia via long stays in places where they were given no status or protection and often ended up in detention centres. KEMPSEY Shire Council have released a Draft Plan 2018/19 for comment by its ratepayers. Within this plan KSC have indicated its proposed rates and fees for this period. It has not indicated how much theses costs have risen compared to last financial year nor has it made any other comparisons to previous years in its proposals and projections. WOW! Knock me over with a feather. I’m agreeing and then totally disagreeing with Pauline Hanson, then wondering if I disagree - all in the space of two minutes! I caught the regular segment with Pauline Hanson and fellow Senator, Derryn Hinch on Sunrise this morning (Monday) and they had two topics to discuss: Our education system and the Gonski recommendations and Labor pledging to axe the ‘tampon tax’, if voted in. Apparently, there’s a Gonski recommendation to introduce new tests to measure a student’s progress. Pauline is against adding more testing to the curriculum and is all for getting back to basics - reading, writing and arithmetic, testing/grading students three times a year and you know where you stand with your peer’s type of scenario. She also called for more discipline in schools. I totally agree with Pauline regarding getting back to basics to educate our future generations. Kids are so reliant on devices these days. They are being trained not to think for themselves, stripped of any social skills and have fast become slaves to screens – phone, tablet, tv, computer, whiteboard, laptop – it doesn’t matter what you do – there’ll be a type of screen involved somehow, somewhere. If you ask the screen a question, the answer will appear. Oh the magic of google! I also agree there should be more discipline in schools, but I don’t believe it should just stop at schools. Discipline is a dying art which needs to be reintroduced to society as whole. Unfortunately, it seems ‘manners, discipline and respect’ have vacated planet Earth. I’m hoping there’s enough time left to lure them back before total extinction – or we are in ‘sheep dip’! At the risk of sounding old, when, can I ask, are the parents of today’s children and

I STOOD on the roadside on the highway north of Kempsey with a very flat and blown tyre recently. I was faced with quite a wait when a young man with his wife and child in their car stopped and he changed the tyre for me very efficiently. As an elderly lady driver on my own I was very thankful for their kindness. The young man also helped me move things out and back in to the boot of the car as well. Many thanks for that willing help.

future generations going to be held accountable or responsible for the discipline, education and basic upbringing of their own children? I’m hearing about kids leaving high school, who can neither read nor write. I have four children, have worked fulltime from day dot and have spent more than half my 35 years as a mum, as the sole parent and provider. All four could at least count to ten, recite the alphabet, read basic pre-school books, speak fluently for their age and knew how to act with self-discipline, manners and respect – before they went to pre-school. How did that happen? They were taught by myself and the support network of family and friends around them. Isn’t that normal? So, I’m going to have to agree to disagree with Pauline on education. We need to get back to basics alright. Instead of blaming the teachers and kids (and government of the day) for the appalling levels of education we need to go back a couple of decades. Rather than pandering to their kids’ every want, parents need to step up, be accountable, take a responsible role in their children’s lives, teach them manners, discipline and how respect works to prepare them for school. If our kids aren’t given good, basic life lessons from the outset - by their parents – how can we expect better results? As for the ‘tampon tax’? I agree. Women’s hygiene products (a necessary evil) shouldn’t be a bargaining tool for any vote grab. The big unanswered question for me? Are the companies that make women’s hygiene products paying all their taxes?
I HAVE just been travelling around second and third world countries and believe me, their roads are far superior than ours. I’m sure there’s other locals that would like Herschell Street and Lake Road repaired. My car is losing value quickly and apparently, we have been given the funding so let’s spend it please.

Young voices to be heard By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC THE voices of young people across the Mid North Coast are about to be heard. The annual Youth Survey conducted by Mission Australia is now open and aims to pinpoint issues regarding youth aged 15-19 across Australia. “In our region, mental health, alcohol, and drugs are concerns for young people, as well as education and employment,” said Nicole Kosseris, Mission Australia Program Manager, Youth On Track Mid North Coast. “The information from the Youth Survey is used to look at what opportunities there are out there for us to be able to support young people. “We use that information to advocate on behalf of young people for the services and broader policy changes they need. It’s important we get a good snapshot of what issues our young people are facing on the Mid North Coast and then we are looking at opportunities to address those issues.” In 2017, the survey concluded that youth were struggling with mental health, alcohol and drugs, equity and discrimination. Mental health was the top concern for the first time in the 16-year history of reporting. Young people highlighted that coping with stress, school or study problems and body image were their top three issues of personal concern. This year’s survey will focus on issues around social media, alcohol and drugs, barriers to employment, and how young people feel about their community. “I think there are definitely avenues for our youth to turn to for help on the Mid North Coast, especially in Port Macquarie, Laurieton, and Wauchope” Nicole said. “There’s several youth focused organisations
The 2018 Mission Australia Youth Survey runs through until July 31 and is hoped to reach more than 30,000 participants within our community, such as Headspace who deal particularly with mental health. The local council also often conducts surveys and interviews with young people, focusing on what their needs are in the community.” This year Mission Australia hopes to reach more than 30,000 participants with the survey before July 31. Nicole says that the Mid North Coast is a great place to grow up. “The young people I have worked with on the Mid North Coast are generally happy, but of course there are pockets of young people facing
a range of challenges in all communities,” said Nicole. Mission Australia officially launched the survey during National Youth Week. There were a range of activities held on the Mid North Coast which celebrated the contribution of young people. “We have some very talented and passionate young people in the community and that is highlighted through the annual Youth Week celebration,” Nicole said. “Some of the young artists that we have here
have made such a big impact on the community through Youth Week, whether it be Battle of the Bands, or even recently at the Anzac Day parade there was a lovely young local girl who gave the key note speech and she was fantastic.” Mission Australia’s Youth Survey 2018 is open to all young people living in Australia aged 15-19. The Kempsey Friendship Force recently celebrated its 30th anniversary
Friends group turns 30 By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC CREATING international relations is easy if you’re a part of the Kempsey Friendship Force. The local organisation just celebrated their 30-year anniversary and is staying true to their core goal - to encourage friendships. “Our program is a home hosting program where we introduce people to our area, our valley, and our culture,” said Denise Payne from Kempsey Friendship Force. “Our 40 members from Port Macquarie through to Valla welcome international and national Friendship Force members into our homes and we show them around.” Some members of the club have had close relationships created through the program for over 25 years. “We just had the Brisbane club visit recently and a lady from their club has been friends with a lady from our club for over 25 years,” Denise said. “So these home-stays have certainly created lifelong friendships. “Anyone who takes anyone into their home has got to have a good heart. I’ve done homestays in Japan, South Korea, Russia, and Estonia and it’s always a very interesting and fun experience. “Sometimes the people we are staying with don’t speak English, but usually their teenage children or someone else in the homestay group will speak English so we communicate through them, otherwise we use charades and Google Translate.” The club hosts one international and one domestic club for a week each, once a year. The Kempsey club will also venture internationally
Kempsey Friendship Force members in Japan once a year and travels throughout Australia a few times a year. “Some of our Kempsey members are heading to Brazil and Peru this week where they will visit 2-3 homestays and then most will continue their own holiday for another week or so,” Denise said. “Our club recently visited Tamworth as apart of World Friendship Day and then we’ve got a club coming from Brazil in September and then we are visiting Adelaide in October. “We learn about other people’s food, their interests, and their area. We build international friendships and learn to understand each other culturally. “When people come stay with us we take them to our local beaches, to Port Macquarie, and a couple of food production farms in the region.” Denise says most members are around 55-75 years of age, but she hopes to see more young people become involved. “My husband and I stayed with a couple in
Arizona and they had been doing the homestays since they were 30,” said Denise. “We think it’s important for a long and healthy life to be apart of social groups like this – you’ve got to stay active and engaged and meet new people.” The evolution of technology has certainly raised some concerns for social interaction in 2018, but Denise says that computers have helped the continuation of long distance friendships. “Technology has made planning and organizing the trips and communication between clubs easier,” explains Denise. “I think email has encouraged the continuity of the friendship. There’s certainly people we’ve stayed with who we email a couple of times a year, especially at Christmas, and then there’s people we talk to on the phone or through email much more frequently.” For more information about Kempsey Friendship Force contact President Peter Garty at pvgarty@bigpond.com
PORT Macquarie-Hastings Council is encouraging residents to keep up the great work in recycling, and wishes to reassure the community that no recycling is being sent to landfill. A new policy from China that restricts waste imports will mean significant changes in the management of Australia’s recycling, however in the Port Macquarie-Hastings it is business as usual. Recent reports from the Environment Protection Authority (EPA) show that around 89% of our community regularly recycle through their yellow bin, which helps to lessen the impact of the policy locally. Council is asking the community to continue to use their yellow bin to recycle, and to not be influenced by the decisions councils have made in other areas. “We’re currently working closely with our local waste contractors and other levels of Government on ways to adapt to the recent changes,” said Group Manager, Maria Doherty. “As a community, we have focused for many years on promoting recycling habits to minimise waste to landfill and support good environmental outcomes. “It is more important than ever to continue to recycle and do the right thing by our environment. “I urge our community to be even more conscientious about recycling, rinsing items for the yellow bin, and making sure recycling waste is not contaminated with other non-recyclable materials,” Ms Doherty said. Each year, our community recycles approximately 13,500 tonnes of waste from our yellow bins. “The more we can keep out of landfill, the better off the community, Council and the environment are,” said Ms Doherty. “If we all focus on reducing the total amount of waste we generate, consume less and choose the right bin, then the cost to our community, and more importantly the impact on our environment can be minimised,” added Ms Doherty. While China’s decision has placed stress on the recycling industry, it also provides great opportunity to grow local, sustainable businesses and implement new and improved strategies to manage our waste. “We are trying to identify new uses for recyclable materials and promote industry innovation to boost local recycling markets, and Council has committed to re-using processed glass in future engineering works following a successful trial where crushed glass was used in a drainage project at Kendall,” Ms Doherty said. FROM THE MAYOR A weekly conversation with Mayor Peta Pinson In recent years our community has been doing a great job in sorting our household waste into the green, yellow and red bins we all have at home. The small effort it takes in sorting our rubbish ensures that we can recycle and re-use as much as possible, and ensure that we minimise the amount that ends up in landfill. To help us all understand which bin to use at home, we’ve recently introduced an animated family, The Hastings, who are going to teach us all how to Choose green and yellow first, so your red bin won’t burst! It’s more than just a slogan, it’s about understanding what waste can go where, so we’re doing all we can to recycle and re-use.
Our green bin takes food scraps and garden waste which is processed into nutrient rich compost for our gardens. Yellow bin items are recycled and reprocessed into new products including drink bottles and newspapers, so it’s really important that we put recyclable items such as washed bottles and jars, cardboard and plastic containers in our yellow bin. Over recent weeks there has been some discussion in the news around China no longer accepting contaminated recycling waste from other countries. While this decision will mean councils across Australia will need to make changes to how they manage their recycling waste, in our region we will continue in our strong commitment to recycling, and are always looking at new and innovative ways to do more. No recycling waste from our yellow bins goes into
pmhc.nsw.gov.au landfill, and we’re even using recyclable materials in our regular operations, such as recycled glass as a road base material. It’s great for our community, reduces cost, and the environmental benefits are enormous. Like the Hastings family, the best thing we can all do is to keep our recycling efforts and make sure we know which items can go into which bin. Our website has lots of tips on how to use green and yellow first, and we’ve even got a handy magnet that you can put on your fridge to remind you. Crowdy hot rod heaven
The hot rods are coming to Crowdy Head Beach on Saturday May 12
By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC CROWDY Head will be a little more crowded next weekend (May 12). The Drag-Ens Hot Rod Club is bringing their annual ‘Rattletrap’ event to the popular beach. “There will be 60 hot rods and 20 motorcycles on the beach,” said Andrew McClelland, President of the Drag-Ens Hot Rod Club. “It’s a vintage time trials event, so it’s not a speed event. There will also be about 200 cars on display in the car park.” Spectators can expect to see all kinds of classic hot rods, vintage racecars, and vintage bikes. “It’s quite a sight to see all the vintage cars along the beach,” Andrew said. “I built my car six years ago and I built it to look like a car in

the ’40s.” The majority of the members of the club come from Sydney and enjoy coming up each year to the Mid North Coast for this event. “We’ve been putting on an event in Valla for 42 years and we decided we wanted to put on another event on the Mid North Coast,” said Andrew. “We were looking for a good beach with good access for the cars and good spectator viewing and we found Crowdy Head last year and decided we wanted to make it an annual event. The council and the locals up there have just been awesome to work with.” The event will kick off from 10am with non-stop action from start to finish. The event will include bracket sprints, grudge matches and an Exhibition Class for unique or historical vehicles.

A few spots have opened up for the ‘Get Ready Girls’ State Emergency Service workshop. “We booked out quite quickly but now a few more spaces are available for our workshop,” said Elaine Mason, NSW SES Port MacquarieHastings Unit Social Media Coordinator. “We are asking that any girls interested in joining the workshop to register by messaging us on our Facebook page or by calling myself.” The workshop will take place on May 21 and will prepare women for emergencies in a relaxed, supportive, female only atmosphere. These women will learn how to prepare the house for a storm, basic first aid, what to do when you come across a road accident, and much more. There are already 15 women as part of the SES Port Macquarie and Elaine said the volunteers are keen to have more on board. New CEO for domestic violence organisation PORT Macquarie Hastings Domestic and Family Violence Specialist Services (DFVSS) has welcomed Kelly Lamb as the new Chief Executive Officer of the organisation which has been delivering domestic violence services in the local area for more than 35 years. One of Ms Lamb’s first tasks in the leadership role will be to oversee the delivery of expanded Men’s Domestic Violence Behaviour Change Programs resulting from grant funding secured by the Mid North Coast Engage 2 Change consortium. Ms Lamb said the funding is a reflection of the dedication of DFVSS team members, alongside colleagues from Kempsey and Coffs Harbour, who have been listening to the needs of local women and creating new ways to provide the support services they want. “The funding enables an expansion of the ‘Step-Up Mate’ program across the Mid North Coast, including Port Macquarie, and will result in more programs throughout the year with training for additional program facilitators,” Ms Lamb said. Ms Lamb has been a Board Member of DFVSS for two years and Acting CEO since January. She brings seven years’ experience in the community services sector and has led organisations in both the not-for-profit and corporate sectors. “I’m pleased to take on this challenging and meaningful role at such an exciting time for the service, as we expand our ability to make a real difference in the lives of local families affected by domestic violence.” DFVSS Board Chair Marg Morgan said Ms Lamb was a great addition to the team of dedicated and passionate staff who provide practical domestic violence services that combine the latest research, feedback from stakeholders and proven government strategies. “The Board and all staff would like to thank former CEO Gemma Morley for her tireless dedication to the organisation over the past 22 years,” Ms Morgan said. “Gemma has been an integral part of the evolution of the DFVSS from the local refuge to a leading provider of domestic and family violence services with an expanded range of supports including prevention, early intervention and crisis response programs.”
Have your say on animal regulation HAVE Your Say On Companion Animals Regulation: Animal welfare and community safety would be improved in the local government area under proposed changes as part of a statutory review of the Companion Animals Regulation. I am encouraging council and local pet owners to comment on a new draft Companion Animals Regulation which proposes to increase on-the-spot fines for dog attacks and dangerous dog offences and extend discounted registration fees to animals adopted from approved rescue organisations. These proposed changes will not only help to reduce dog attacks in the local government area, but will also increase rehoming rates for dog and cats adopted from local rescue organisations. I encourage our local council and dog and cat owners to make a submission on these proposed changes and help protect the welfare of our beloved pet cats and dogs and increase the safety of our local community. The NSW Government is determined to keep people and animals in our communities safe and to make sure that we have the best system to reunite lost pets with their owners, rehome rescue animals and work to keep them out of pounds and shelters. Released koalas tracked PORT Macquarie Koala Hospital recently released seven koalas, five of whom were fitted with radio tracking collars. The project is partly funded by the Threatened Species Program – Save our Species – an initiative of the NSW Office of Environment and Heritage. The koalas will be followed for the next six months. The koalas were admitted to the hospital suffering burns injuries as a result of the Limeburners Creek National Park fires in December, 2017. The search and rescue team which included staff from Port Macquarie Hastings Council, NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service, NSW Forestry Corporation and trained personnel from the Koala Hospital conducted a search over a two-week period and found a total of 54 koalas, most of which were located in pockets of relatively unburnt country. Sadly there were a few koalas that could not be saved and some had perished in the fire. The project will be overseen by Biolink Ecological consultants, and the daily tracking will be undertaken by Saltair ecologists and Koala Hospital staff. The Limeburners fire caused a major disruption to the koala population forcing them in closer together and changing the dynamics of the normal hierarchy and food resources. This project will allow the hospital to see the effects of reintroduction of further koalas back into the post fire habitat.
Tracing the origins of ‘mayor’ THE MAYOR of a local government area is a fairly important person, or he should be. I was reading a couple of papers recently. One said Mayor Quits. The other said the same thing, but in a few more words. The word goes back at least to the year 1297. It represented the word major, but the word had many spellings, such as mer, maiere and maire. In fact, you could pick your spelling, and it was used. The Dutch meier had the sense of mayor and farmer, but the word was in many countries, including Germany. (Don’t let people fool you with golf, gentlemen only, ladies forbidden and another one I heard recently and have already forgotten, because these words had many spellings over their lifetimes.) Anyway, the word mayor was used as a title in England and Ireland, in the British Commonwealth and in the USA and in other places as well. It was formerly used by the heads of certain royal burghs in Scotland, but was superseded by provost. It is occasionally rendered as maire in other countries. In some areas the election of mayor is

accompanied by elaborate ceremonies; in other places the electors or the elected aldermen choose the mayor with little ceremony. A boatman in the Boloton and Bury canal was given the title of Lord Mayor of the Village of Ringley, in some places overseas the mayor was given the title of mayor of the pig market and in Dublin the title was mayor of the bull ring. In some places the person eligible to be elected as mayor was called the mayor’s peer. The word mayor was used in other places. The “mayrsfeud”, spelt that way, was the fee of a ”mair”. The mayor of the palace has been used. Mayor town was a town ruled by a mayor. Mayor corn was an ancient Scottish tax of corn given to a mayor. In 1818 Arthur H Hallam said “Ebroin and Grimoald, mayors of Neustria and Austrasia”. I

don’t know what he meant, either. The word mayoral can be the person in charge of a train of beasts of burden, as well as the head of a local government area. Mayoralty can refer to the office of mayor, as well as to the period office of a mayor. Mayoress can refer to the wife of a mayor or a woman holding the office of mayor. The husband of a female mayor is sometimes called the mayor’s consort, or any name you want to call him. Stephen Murray-Smith says “there is yet no term for the husband of a female mayor, the style thus being Madam Mayor and Mr Smith. Murray-Smith says big cities have lord mayors. Other words include petty mayor, mayorship and mayorhood. Eliezer Edwards in his 1901 dictionary says “seeing the names of sheriff and alderman cannot be drawn from the Latin, why should it be thought that mayor comes from major?” But John Aytio says the ancestry of mayor is major, which comes to England via medieval Latin major. STARRING in Thomas Keneally’s novel ‘A River Town’, the dark-green Macleay River sashays around Kempsey from a source high in the Great Dividing Range. These monolithic mountains stand sentinel in the distance, changing colour with the light from blue to green, crimson and purple. Red gold, towering cedar trees, first attracted European settlers in 1827, but this well-watered valley has been home to the Dunghutti Nation for millennia. English merchant Enoch Rudder established a private town in the 1830s and named it Kempsey. His old home site, now Rudder Park Lookout in East Kempsey, has panoramic views. The water reservoir there, built in the 1920s, was for many years home to community radio station Tank FM before its recent move to West Kempsey. Grazing, farming, dairying and merchants followed the early timber industry and Kempsey prospered. The names of other squatters to the area such as John Verge of ‘Austral Eden’, Major William Kemp of ‘Boonanghii’ and William Henry Chapman of ‘Yarrabandinni’ should be familiar to Kempsey residents because some streets were named after those early settlers. Before a bridge forged the river, ferries linked East and South Kempsey to Central and West Kempsey and docked in front of Keneally’s grandparent’s old home and store. buildings, including Central Kempsey’s marvellous post office built in 1886. West Kempsey’s main street is wide enough to accommodate bullock carts and is graced with delightfully-restored colonial buildings, including a court house built in 1859 and a post office built in 1879. Its hotels, churches, halls, station and showground all date back to those earlier days.
Farmers and graziers set the period scene when they walk by and dip their Akubra hat, a world-famous Aussie icon made right here in Kempsey. The architecturally-stunning Slim Dusty Centre is also situated in Kempsey and is ‘an iconic Australian experience built around the legendary country music icon and Australian country Music’.
Kempsey also provides a perfect picnic spot at Riverside Park, with its upgraded children’s playground and great monthly markets, plus there are a range of cafes, restaurants, takeaways, hotels, clubs and specialty shops a short walk away. For the health conscious, apart from glorious beaches, there are squash courts, sporting fields, tennis courts, ten-pin bowling alley, boat ramps, a heated-swimming pool complex and an 18-hole golf course - complete with grazing kangaroos.

Macula disease study concern MARKING the launch of the inaugural Macula Month (May), study results released by Macular Disease Foundation Australia highlight the need for Australians, particularly those living with diabetes, to be more aware of macular disease and how to minimise the risk. Macular disease is a term used to describe a number of diseases that affect the macula (located at the centre of the retina, at the back of the eye). Two of the most common diseases affecting the macula include diabetic eye disease (such as diabetic retinopathy) and age-related macular degeneration. Despite macular disease being the leading cause of blindness in Australia, a YouGov Galaxy study, commissioned by Macular Disease Foundation Australia, indicates that 91 per cent of Australians are unsure or unaware of the function of the macula. One of the most common diseases affecting the macula, diabetic eye disease is the leading cause of preventable blindness in working-aged Australians. Yet, the study shows that 60 per cent of people diagnosed with diabetes do not know what the macula’s function is. Alarmingly, 64 per cent of those diagnosed with diabetes are unaware that the eyes can be affected by diabetes. Ms Dee Hopkins, Chief Executive Officer of Macular Disease Foundation Australia says the findings of this study are concerning because everyone diagnosed with diabetes is at risk of developing diabetic eye disease. “If you are diagnosed with diabetes, having a comprehensive eye test every two years should be a priority. It is important to let your optometrist know that you have been diagnosed with diabetes and ask about your macula. Macula Month is the perfect time to make that appointment,” says Ms Hopkins.
Wild dogs become very territorial this time of the year
Autumn danger of wild dog attacks “Wild dogs attacks on domestic dogs are generally serious, inflicting major injuries and in many cases death” AUTUMN may be providing us with a welcome break from the heat of summer but it also signals the time when wild dog activity increases as wild dogs go in search of a breeding partner and establish territories which can be defended aggressively, often to the detriment of domestic dogs who are seen as a threat or encroaching on the wild dogs’ territory. Wild dogs attacks on domestic dogs are generally serious, inflicting major injuries and in many cases death. Many of these attacks occur very close to home with domestic dogs being attacked on the chain or in the house yard. Wild dog sightings, howling and attacks are expected to increase over the autumn period and it is now during the cooler months through to spring that landholders need to be proactive with wild dog control programs in order to minimise attacks on domestic dogs, livestock and many vulnerable native species. North Coast Local Land Services is asking landholders affected by wild dog attacks to
report attacks to local Biosecurity staff and to help reduce attacks either by working with existing wild dog control groups or forming new groups, if needed. Reporting may seem an incidental part of control but this information allows effective targeting of control measures and when incorporated into the Local Land Services mapping system it also assists Wild Dog Control Groups to identify gaps in control so they can engage the relevant landholders to improve future control programs. North Coast Local Land Services facilitates landscape scale programs that follow best practice guidelines by encouraging landholders, which includes land managers such as NPWS and Forestry Corporation, to carry out control across tenures using a coordinated approach. The use of 1080 wild dog baits is the most cost effective method to control wild dogs and Biosecurity Officers can help landholders to plan and execute control programs for their properties. “North Coast Local Land Services provides a free Vertebrate Pest Training (VPT) course to landholders which provides participants with information relevant to the available control methods and practical skills to improve wild dog control. “The VPT course has been provided to over 1000 landholders since it began in 2010 and, as it provides a five year accreditation, previous participants should check to see if their training is still current and contact their local Biosecurity about updating the qualification if required. “Biosecurity Officers across the region are currently working with coordinators from wild dog groups across the region to plan wild dog control programs through the autumn and spring periods and I would encourage landholders to become involved in local programs. “We encourage all interested landholders to contact their local North Coast Local Land Services office to find out how to be involved.”

Tricky conditions for sailing finale PORT Macquarie Sailing Club’s last sailing day for the season was to be five sprint races. These were held in mainly overcast conditions with what started as a cool, moderate westerly that eased and backed to the south west for the 2nd and 3rd races, causing the short course to be shortened even further due to the fast run-out tide. A small rain front came through with a stronger south wester for the 4th race, but there was little wind after the front passed, so the 5th race was abandoned, and everyone unrigged and packed their boats away for the last time and went upstairs for a BBQ. The catamaran division’s first race was won on yardstick by Jack Corthals on Harpic ahead of Tony Kuhn on Stella and Dave Winter on Spica. The first race for the monohull fleet saw Paul Robertson and Sophie Holt in Flembouyant take the yardstick win, followed by Terry Howard in

ON a wet Saturday April 28 a very small field of 8 ladies competed in a Stableford round. Overall winners were Kathy Lawrence 34 from Suzie Johnson 33. Jenny Smith was the sole placegetter on 29. NTPs were: on the 5th and 7th Adri Fouche; on the 16th Suzie Johnson; and on the 17th Kathy Lawrence. On Friday April 27 Port Macquarie ladies participated in a 2 person Ambrose competition with a limited field, due to the current wet conditions, of 56 entrants. The results were: First: Samantha Ansley and Glenys Cummings 69.25; Second: Laurie McColl and Edie Baril 69.5; Third: Di Hubbard and Tracy Crowe 71.75 on a c/b. NTPs were: on the 16th A Grade Vicki Farthing and B Grade Joan Quilliam; and on the 13th all in second shot Laurie McColl and partner Edie Baril.

THURSDAY golf at Port Macquarie was a single stableford event. Winner in A grade was John Brokenshire with a terrific 42 points. Runner up was Shane Moran with 40 points on a c/b from third placed Ray Robbins and Ken Sheather. Winner in B grade was Bob Graham with a great 41 points. Runner up was Alan Watts with 39 points and third was Ian McGinnigle with 37 points. Winner in C grade was Daniel Evans with a great 41 points. Runner up was Matthew Hingston with 40 points and third was Colin Egan with 39 points. Scratch score went to Tom Biron with a terrific two under par round for 38points. The ball competition went down to 34 points on a c/b. NTP’s went to Graham Evans, Dennis Lisk, Reid Brown and Fletcher Murray.

Elmo did not finish in the light breeze, and Britannia had returned to shore for a crew change. The Catamaran’s third race was won on yardstick by Stella followed by Spica and Harpic with sail problems. Ratz won the monohulls third race with Spellbound second, then Voyager, Red Star,
Splash Dance, and Elmo. Britannia had returned to the water with Damon Williamson as crew, but was caught in the wind shadow of the clubhouse, Salty’s, and Jordan’s, and could not get to the start line, while Flembouyant had returned to the shore for a break during the lighter breeze. The fourth race for the catamarans was again won by Stella ahead of Spica on yardstick, and Harpic had returned to shore with several battens starting to pop through the sail. As the breeze came back in with the rain squall for the fourth race for the monohulls, Flembouyant returned to the water and got another win over Ratz, Spellbound, Red Star, Voyager, Elmo, Splash Dance, and Britannia. The season has now finished in time for Mother’s Day, so bookings now need to be made for the presentation night on May 19 at the clubhouse. The 2018 – 2019 season will start on the first Sunday of September – Father’s Day.
The 4BBB was taken out by Graham Ward and Collin Hassal with 44 pts on a c/b. Runnersup were Graeme McLaughlan and Ray Smith also with 44 pts on a c/b. In third place was Michael Sheldon and Charles Langham again with 44 pts on a c/b and in fourth place was Dennis Hughes and Rod Allen also with 44 pts. In the single event Division 1 went to Bob Maggs with 35 pts, division 2 was won by Rex Munro with 37 pts on a c/b and division 3 went to David Martin with 35 pts. Nearest the pin comp on the 4th hole was highlighted by John Singleton (Div 1) scoring a hole in one. Division 2 was won by Alan Cleaver 2.72m and division 3 went to Terry Payne with 3.85m. On the 18th hole division 1 was taken out by Roy Stokes with 4.28m, division 2 went to Warren Perry with 4.3m and division 3 was won by Jim Bransdon with 7.0m. On the 7th hole nearest the pin across the field was won by Rod Allen 0.66m. In the ball comp balls went down to 38 on a c/b giving 28 players a bonus ball each for the day. Next week’s event is 1st round Veteran Men’s Club Championship and is a Single Stroke event. A putting competition will be held in conjunction with this game.

THE weather gods were not smiling for the kick off of the pennant season on Saturday with all matches commencing under constant drizzle. The 2’s unfortunately went down by 1 shot, 52-53 to Kempsey Heights, with Dave Carney winning 26-16, Harro going down 16-17 and Jeff Purdy going down 11-20. Crusher picked up 3 on the last end but it was 1 shot short of a miraculous win (points 1-9). The 5’s had a great win away to Port City 76-51, with Lester Thurgate up 36-10, Ken Ansley up 24-17 and Adolf missing out 1624. The 7’s won at home 76-48 against Kew, with Teddy Scott up 29-13, Graham Gillard up 25-13 and Smiley playing a 22 all draw. Next week the 2’s are away to Sawtel and the 5’s are at home to SWR while the 7’s will try to defeat the bye. This week there was a turnout of 20 players for our Wednesday Anzac Day club select triples. The winners came from the 2 pairs games required with Rex Shrubb and Graham Scaysbrook sneaking home with +10, while the runners up Don Berry and Jim Hopcroft managed +9.

2018 is still a mystery THE 2018 NRL competition continues to throw curve balls. Just when you think certain teams are ‘in’ or ‘out’ this season they reverse their form line. Brisbane, Warriors, Tigers and Eels are three examples. The Broncos have been labouring, but then hit back. The Warriors and Tigers are supposed to be the new ‘leaders’, but were less-thanconvincing last weekend. And the Eels! Well this weekend against the Sharks will give another indication of just how much a threat they will be this year. Interesting to see the Storm give the Warriors such a touch up. Almost a case of Craig Bellamy throwing the gauntlet down to the new leaders, saying they are the reigning premiers and still a major force. Their clash with the Dragons is undoubtedly the match of the round. St George have already proven they are the real deal in 2018. A win here however will give them bragging rights for some time. Let’s pick some winners: Broncos v Bulldogs (Thursday, May 3, 7.50pm, Suncorp Stadium, Brisbane): The first of many games where ‘the coin toss’ may be the decider. Brisbane have key players out injured, but are coming off a morale -boosting win over the Rabbits last weekend. The Dogs fell to the Panthers and are sitting in 14th place.
