True grit Here’s a real sporting hero
By CHRISTINA PARKIN TOLD at the age of nine that he will never play contact sports again, Cooper Reichert has proved his doctors wrong. Cooper looks back on the days when he underwent three major operations, chemotherapy and needed lifesaving radiotherapy, which would affect the strength of his bones in his lower back. He was seriously considering not having radiation therapy when told his sport-playing days were over. Now at the age of 16, and in remission from the diagnosis of neuroblastoma he received the day before his ninth birthday, Cooper has shown further determination as the only player from Port Macquarie to win a place in the Under 16 NSW Country Rugby Union team to tour New
Zealand at the end of September. “He was just meant to be here,” says his mum, Angie Reichelt. “After two operations and six cycles of chemotherapy, a checkup found he had another tumour wrapped around his aorta. “Even during the operation, he almost ‘bled out’ after a nick in his aorta, but Cooper was determined to stay with us.” Cooper loves his sport almost as much as his therapy dog, Bear, who was given to him during

his recuperation. Even Bear nearly died from the effects of a tick, but Cooper wasn’t going to allow that to happen either. A soccer player since six, Cooper also loved supporting the Melbourne Storm National Rugby League team. • Continued Page 3

A real sports hero
From left at the North Coast Tourism Awards held in the Barrel Room at Cassegrain Wines, Port Macquarie Museum’s Gold Award is displayed by Debbie Sommers, along with Linda Hall, Zone Leader for National Parks and Wildlife and Natalie Talbot, Information and Retail Manager for the Sea Acres Rainforest Centre holding their Gold and Silver Awards
Museum strikes gold The recognition cements our position as an “effective drawcard for the region’s tourists
“
By CHRISTINA PARKIN AN investment in developing a strategic plan has paid dividends for the Port Macquarie Museum with its win in the 2016 North Coast Tourism Awards in the category of Cultural Tourism for the third year in a row. More than 150 tourism industry organisations were nominated for their commitment, service and innovation in the development of tourism across the north coast in an awards ceremony hosted recently at Cassegrain Winery. “It’s great recognition for all our hard work,” says Ms Debbie Sommers, Volunteer Curator for the Port Macquarie Museum. Working with Kevin Williams from Arts Mid North Coast in 2013, the Museum’s committee worked on implementing how they could improve their approach to their business processes, customer services, sustainability and collection policy. “It has enabled us to become more selfsufficient and viable - and it’s working,”
claimed Ms Sommers. “Since we have had those plans and policies in place, it is much easier to run the museum as a business and the recognition cements our position as an effective drawcard for the region’s tourists.” The Museum is also developing partnerships with NSW Forestry Corporation, Charles Sturt University and the House With No Steps which are three exciting new projects which will come to fruition by the end of the year. Another icon for tourists that visit the Port Macquarie region is the Sea Acres Rainforest Centre and it too was rewarded with a Gold Award for Visitor Information Services and a Silver Award in the category for Specialised Tourism Services. “We won a Silver Award in the same category last year, so it really motivates the team and acknowledges their work in gaining a Gold Award this year,” says Ms Natalie Talbot, Information and Retail Manager for the Sea Acres Rainforest Centre.
“We are all really chuffed.” Port Macquarie-Hastings Council Mayor, Peter Besseling said: “In particular, I would like to recognise the six Port Macquarie-Hastings award winners, who are shining examples of tourism excellence and consistently offer wonderful visitor experiences.” Other Silver Award winners were Vacation Village in the Standard Accommodation category and the Hello Koalas Sculpture Trail in the category of Tourist Attractions. The Telegraph Retreat Luxury Cottages earnt a place in the Hall of Fame and The Cruise Terminal was awarded an Encouragement Award in the Tour and/or Transport Operators category after taking over the business less than ten months ago. An excited Rebecca Rowsthorne, owner of The Cruise Terminal said: “We were up against some fantastic people, so it is fantastic to be recognised – we must be doing something right!”
• From Page 1 Several of the Storm players came to Angie’s rescue to visit Cooper while he was in hospital. They convinced him to continue all of his radiation therapy and encouraged him to play using a brace to support his lower back. The Reichelts are a rugby-loving family – Dad, Jason, is a Port Pirates stalwart, and younger brother, Coby, 15, plays in the Under 16s as well. Cooper first played rugby with his St Columba team as a winger and then joined the Pirates in Year 10 as a scrum half. “I want to see how far I can go - there are no barriers after what I’ve been through,” states Cooper, wise beyond his years, who values his family before any possessions or wealth. After playing in Scone a few weeks back, Cooper was first selected in the 40-man squad for country, then from the regional competitions in Sydney last weekend, Cooper was selected to be in the 25 man U16s NSW Country team to go to New Zealand. Club-mates, Sam Begbie was selected in the Under 17s and Elliott Star and Sam Gleeson were chosen to represent the Under 18s. Ferried fortnightly by his grandparents, Coral and Roger Reichelt, around the state, Cooper has been to training camps in Newcastle and Sydney, Canberra last weekend and Kiama in a fortnight. “Just being able to participate in the camps is a fantastic opportunity,” says Cooper. Cooper is so determined to get himself to New Zealand he has started a GoFundMe page at www.gofundme.com/2fr86vw and is roping his grandfathers into helping with a BBQ fundraiser. Cooper would welcome donations to help him achieve his goal of going to New Zealand. Cooper’s dream is to play with the Waratahs and his rugby hero is Michael Hooper, an open side flanker from the Waratahs/Wallabies.
Bring your plastic caps in DON’T forget to continue saving your plastic tops from bottles and containers as they are destined for bigger and much brighter things as part of the Macleay River Festival in September. “One of the themes of this year’s Festival is River Ecology,” says Annabel Lines, Community Project Officer at Kempsey Shire Council. “Plastic rubbish results in trauma to animals living in our waterways. “The artworks made from the tops will bring into focus the amount of plastic waste we generate, as well as contributing to making something bright and colourful for the Festival.” You can help by setting up a collection point in your office, home or business. Once you have a large number of clean lids and tops, drop them off at Kempsey Council’s Customer Services Centre, the Kempsey Library or Your Local Independent’s office on the corner of Gore and Gordon Street in Port Macquarie. Remember, it is just the lids being collected. The recycled art sculpture that will be constructed for the River Festival is just one of the many art installations that will be exhibited during the full day event on September 24.

University - one size doesn’t fit all THE time of year when Year 12 students are about to complete their HSC and apply for university admission is fast approaching. However, we appear to have a misfit of parental and school expectation toward encouraging as many as possible to apply for studies at university. Universities no longer moderate this with an expectation of academic ability at a certain ATAR standard, now that places are no longer capped by the Federal government. More and more, we hear of huge attrition rates and HECS debts for those young people who were dragged into a premise of ‘higher education for all’. It’s not an ideal world, and
universities do not have the resources to assist with the literacy and academic support that students need to survive in the world of academia. You hear more and more of university tutors and lecturers being pressured to pass students in order to maintain their ongoing enrolment, diminishing the quality of the graduate at the end of the course. I’m aghast to hear that teachers will now have to pass a literacy and numeracy assessment before they will graduate as a ‘teacher’. Why wouldn’t this be done BEFORE they were accepted into university? All many students have gained is a huge student debt, limiting their
credit rating for future borrowings for a home or vehicle and no job. University is not for everyone – many jobs can be gained through careful selection of a vocational course or apprenticeship/traineeship. Many TAFE courses can articulate into university degrees – why not achieve at a Certificate IV or Diploma level, where the student can test their aptitude or suitability for that vocation? As they progress through their career, then subsequent university study would be a more appropriate choice to achieve managerial positions or diverge into another career area. There is also the issue of mounting
public debt, with $7 billion in student loans never repaid, according to the most recent report from the Grattan Institute and falling levels of apprentices and qualified tradesmen. Too many parents contribute to the expectation of university study for all their children, regardless of ability – why not let them leave school and take up an apprenticeship at 16 and become qualified by the time they are 20? It’s a ‘no-brainer’ to me and I implore all parents to let their children find their own academic path. Miriam Boughton Port Macquarie

IT’S encouraging to see the growing number of people exercising around this region, especially the walkers. We often hear about the obesity epidemic among our schoolchildren – and we all know the answer, less ‘fast food’ and more exercise. However it’s a pity more parents
don’t realise that the best way to get their kids off the couch is by setting the right example. After years of coaching sport I am still amazed at the 99% of parents who sit and watch as their kids practice footy, ballet, swimming, etc. Why not join in. Do a lap of the pool or oval. What’s the worst that could happen? Name, address supplied

IT has been a bit of a roller coaster week for the team at Your Local Independent - births, deaths and no marriages. Our beautiful Viv Rose sadly lost her mum Saturday week ago after a long battle with cancer. Our prayers and thoughts are with Viv and her family at this time. Three days later and Viv is celebrating the birth of her beautiful new granddaughter Rosie Rose; she is just gorgeous! Life is amazing; one door closes and another one opens. One minute we are torn apart with grief and the next minute we are celebrating with joyous abandon. Another door has opened for Viv and she is off to Hawaii to meet the new family member. We’ll miss you Viv. You are an absolute gem and a blessing to all you meet. Last week was also the 2nd anniversary from my daughter having a stillbirth. Very sad memories but I’m happy to report that through the tragedy my daughter and her husband have grown so much stronger together. It’s beautiful to see. You never know what blessings are just around the corner. Sadly, we got the news over the weekend that a family member had passed away in NZ after a horrendous battle with Parkinson’s. RIP Malcy. You were an absolute gentleman with a fantastic wit and a cheeky glint in your eye. We look forward to seeing your light shining in the night sky!
Thumbs Down I THINK that the Council may have set a new record. The Tourist Information Centre is the only one in NSW not accessible to caravans and RVs. Have any other travellers found similar in NSW? I know of two in other states.

Buckle up for powerboats “
I just love doing it, the thrill of doing it. It’s a family sport.
By LIZZIE McLEOD
“
SOME people do things for the thrill, some do it for the victory and some do it purely for love. When local Michael Page chases championship glory in this weekend’s (August 6-7) final round of the Australian Formula Powerboat Grand Prix Series in Port Macquarie he will be racing for all three reasons – but especially for the love of his family. “I was five or six years old and my father was working seven days a week,” said Page. “I said to him ‘you work all week, we don’t have family time’. I got in trouble and he was chasing me around the front yard and three ski boats flew past and I stopped to look and said ‘ooh, what are they?’ and my father said ‘they’re boats’. And I said ‘let’s do boats’. “And that’s what happened. He went and bought a boat and our family went fishing, skiing, and boat racing, and now here we are. “I just love doing it, the thrill of doing it. It’s a family sport. The whole family goes away and the grandkids are now involved in crewing for me and we have a lot of fun.” This weekend’s competition on the Hastings River will showcase at least 50 powerboats in action-packed racing across seven divisions Formula One, Formula Two, Formula Optimax, Formula Three, Formula Four, Formula Futures (junior drivers 8-16 years), and the Formula V development class. “At the end of the weekend, on the Sunday afternoon there is also a couple of special races,” explains Page. “The senior drivers will get into the Formula Future boats and buddy up with a junior team and help them learn the craft of boat racing.” There will also be a very special event close to Page’s heart. “Then there’s also the Andrew Page Invitational,” said Page. “That’s a race that
Michael Page, left, and Gavin Bricker, right, are in a tight tussle for the Formula Optimax title this weekend in Port Macquarie. (Photo: BRIAN ARMSTRONG) commemorates my late son. It’s run every year in Port Macquarie. “We used to run it for the senior drivers but a couple years ago someone suggested ‘Hey why don’t you let the Formula Future’s run for it?’ So that’s what we do. “We run a little fundraiser over the weekend and sell a few stubby holders and a few little things and all the proceeds go to Cystic Fibrosis New South Wales.” Page will have his game face on as he attempts to clinch his third straight Formula Optimax title. He is leading the division (4038 points), but is
just 38 points clear of long-time rival Gavin Bricker. “I used to race in (the premier division) Formula One years ago against him (Bricker),” said Page. “He’s now come into our class and loves it, in fact he will have two boats here this weekend. It’s a pretty big effort from him. “It’s been pretty competitive and we have been pretty competitive all year.” Page has won the 2014 and 2015 Formula Optimax titles and also has past Formula Two trophies in his cabinet. The sky remains the limit for this 57-year-old speed king, who has been
racing boats for 41 years, but the future of his racing will always be a family decision. “It has been a big part of my life and the family’s too,” said Page. “We are really looking forward to this year and we will see what happens at the end. “We will decide as a family whether I’m going to keep racing, otherwise I could sell the boat and walk away from it … well not completely walk away from it, I would always crew for someone else. So there’s a few ways it could go.” The races will take place on Saturday and Sunday from 9am until 4pm. Page’s races are expected to be on Saturday afternoon between 2-4pm and on Sunday he will have three races – mid morning, lunchtime, and in the afternoon. The pit area will be located at McInherney Park. Admission to the pit area can be obtained at the gate for a $15 weekend pass, $10 day pass and kids are admitted free. There will be opportunities to talk to the drivers, inspect the boats and watch the boats getting serviced. There will also be food, non-alcoholic beverages, and jumping castles for the kids. Visit www.formulapowerboats.com.au for more information.

Go Ryley in Rio THE COWPER REPORT With Luke Hartsuyker
Federal Member for Cowper
The Real Futures team, from left, Christianna Cartwright, Renee Hawkins, Melissa Fernando, Tjay Towns, Patricia Laurie, Malcolm Tolly Walker, Jaime Parker, Brad Carbutt and Wendy Yarnold
The sky is the limit By SUE PATERICK THE goal for Real Futures is to create social and economic change in Aboriginal Communities, and the sky is literally the limit. In partnership with DreamSky Aviation, the first Aboriginal company in Australia to provide flight training and aviation experience for members of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, Real Futures is supporting two Kempsey lads to become commercial pilots. One of the company’s Directors, Wendy Yarnold, said these men were the first to take part in the pilot program. “It shows others in the local community and Australia just what can be achieved,” she said. “Our budding pilots can now take off and land a plane and in a few months they’ll be able to take up charter flights.” According to Ms Yarnold, aviator training is an emerging industry because there will soon be a national shortage of pilots. And once qualified, employment opportunities worldwide are huge and so is the pay. “One of the reasons we support the pilot program is because the opportunities are good and it is a highly-skilled job,” Ms Yarnold says. “We need to show young people that they have the chance to do whatever they want.” The two budding pilots are planning to take
Beekeepers tending their hives part in Kempsey’s air show Wings Over Macleay at the beginning of October. Real Honey is another of Real Future’s sweet success stories. Honey contains bio-active ingredients that promote health and it is in demand around the world. This interest saw Ms Yarnold and fellow director and husband, Brad Carbutt, create Real Honey because they saw a need for Aboriginal people to get involved in the industry. “Honey is a product that is produced in the region and has enormous growth potential for the region,” Ms Yarnold said. In fact, Real Honey is well on the way to selling their natural and nutritious product to
“
Part of our giveback is supporting Aboriginal “ business and opportunities for Aboriginal people
China, India and the Middle East. To keep up with this demand, Real Futures secured a shed at South Kempsey where the honey will be bottled. And according to Ms Yarnold, the employment and economic possibilities are endless for local Aboriginal communities. Not only will the bottling shed need workers, people will also be needed to build bee boxes, become apiarists, identify flora and fauna, and keep the bees healthy. “We’re training people in the community so they can work where they live and make money,” Ms Yarnold said. “Part of our giveback is supporting Aboriginal business and opportunities for Aboriginal people.” Real Futures operate a highly successful Vocational, Training and Employment Centre (VTEC), one of only 24 across the country, and are heading toward helping 400 Aboriginal people into sustained employment from the Hunter to the Tweed. It opened in Kempsey six years ago with its flagship program Pathways to Pilbara, which sent 200 fly-in/fly-out workers to Western Australia to work in the mines. Their efforts in WA were so successful and sought after locally, they just opened an office in Perth. And even though Real Futures is based in Kempsey, it operates all around Australia.
WE are counting down to the 2016 Rio Olympics, so it’s timely that we mark the achievements of Port Macquarie’s own rugby wheelchair Paralympics’ champion Ryley Batt. Ryley was born without legs and didn’t use a wheelchair until he was 12 – so it is quite astonishing that now as a 27-year-old, Ryley is one of the world’s greatest wheelchair athletes. After getting around on a skateboard with his primary school mates, Ryley’s life changed forever when he saw a wheelchair rugby match at his school, and decided it was something he wanted to try. Jump forward three years, and Ryley was part of the national team at the 2004 Athens Games, where he was the youngest Paralympic rugby player in the world, at the age of 15. These games will be the fourth time Ryley has competed in the Paralympics, which adds to his growing list of accomplishments. It was an honour to watch Ryley compete at the London games, where he took home gold and kicked 160 goals, and he also received a silver medal at the Beijing Games. Aside from his amazing sporting achievements, Ryley has become a role model for young people, not just in Port Macquarie, but across Australia. Between his frequent international trips representing Australia, competing with overseas teams or training, the former NSW Young Australian of the Year finalist is forging a career as a public speaker. As a region, we were incredibly proud when Riley was awarded an Order of Australia Medal in the 2014 Australia Day Honours. One of my election commitments during the election campaign was the redevelopment of the antiquated amenities block and club house at Oxley Oval in Port Macquarie. A major reason for the $100,000 upgrade was to provide disabled access to the change rooms. The Vikings Rugby Club and Hastings District Association made it clear they want every person to be able to access the clubhouse and amenities block at Oxley Oval and Ryley has been appointed by the club as unofficial ambassador for the project. I will ensure I keep in touch with Ryley to keep him up-to-date as the development progresses. I join every other mid north coast resident in wishing Ryley all the best in his quest for gold at the Rio Paralympics. He is one of Port Macquarie’s most inspirational figures. We are proud of him and he deserves our support. The Rio Paralympic Games run from September 7-18.

How long have you lived in or around the Macleay? We moved to the Macleay in 1984 after living in Sydney until the 70s, then going to teach in Nyngan, Bega and Grenfell. What do you love most about the Macleay? The people. There is so much community spirit in the Macleay Valley, with volunteering being part of so many people’s lives. It is also a beautiful area with the beaches, river and abundant wildlife. Where do you work and what do you love about your work? I am now retired after 34 years as a High School English and History teacher. I particularly loved teaching literature. Now I am involved with U3A, VIEW Club, Macleay Choral Society, a Book Club, Friendship Force and the Community Gallery. What do you like least about your work? Retirement is so busy that I do not have as much time as I would like, to read and to watch drama on TV and DVDs! How do you start your day? Over breakfast, my husband and I complete the SMH Quick Crossword – but we are moving slowly onto Cryptics! What do you do in your spare time? I lead various courses for University of the Third Age - a fantastic organisation enabling adults to maintain lifelong learning. I enjoy VIEW Club which supports the Smith Family with fundraising to assist students overcome disadvantage. It is great fun being in Friendship Force where we welcome overseas visitors into our home and also stay with members in their homes overseas. What is the achievement you are most proud of? Our three sons – with their partners and children, life is never dull. It is a great joy to be a Nana!
LOCALS are being encouraged to put their good intentions about organ donation into effect by registering and sharing their decision online during DonateLife Week 2016 (Sunday July 31 to Sunday August 7). The majority of Australians support organ and tissue donation with 69 per cent of Australians saying they were willing to become organ and tissue donors, yet only 33 per cent of adults had joined the national register. Many have not registered because they haven’t made time or are unsure about how to register. During DonateLife Week this year, people are being asked to make the time to register online and to share their decision with family and friends. Registration is important because it leaves your family in no doubt of your decision to save lives. Increasing rates of organ donation enabled a record 707 Australians to receive lifesaving transplants in the first six months of this year. A new annual record was also set in 2015, of 1,241 organ recipients. Currently around 1,500 Australians are waiting for a lifesaving transplant, with a further 12,000 people on dialysis waiting for a new kidney. If you’re willing to one day save lives as a

donor, make sure you join the Australian Organ Donor Register and share your decision with loved ones. And ask them, if they haven’t yet registered, ‘What are they waiting for?’” To register online to save lives, visit donatelife.gov.au. The DonateLife website provides a simple online page to self-select your preferred method of joining the register. Once you have registered, you’ll then be taken to a page with simple options for sharing your status as a registered donor online to encourage others to make time to sign up today. DonateLife Week is Australia’s national awareness week to promote organ and tissue donation and is led by the Organ and Tissue Authority. Funds for local schools MEMBER for Oxley, Melinda Pavey, says local public schools will benefit from the NSW Liberals and Nationals Government’s record investment in school infrastructure announced in the recent State Budget. Mrs Pavey welcomed the expenditure that will improve facilities for local students. “The NSW Government will spend $554 million in 2016-17, an increase of 37 per cent on last year’s expenditure,” said Ms Pavey. The capital works and priority school maintenance projects in Oxley include: • Wauchope High School science lab upgrade; • Melville High School fitness learning space construction; • Wauchope Public School energy supply upgrade; • Bellingen High School canteen refurbishment; • Gladstone Public School Block B footings upgrade. The 2016-17 Budget includes an allocation of $330 million over two years, including $31.17 million for schools in the North Coast region. “This budget is a substantial boost to the NSW Government’s school maintenance and upgrade program,” Mrs Pavey said. School principals consulting with Asset Management Units will select high priority maintenance projects through the planned maintenance program. Under the Local Schools, Local Decisions reform, principals now have greater decision making responsibilities about maintenance.
When formality came to shearing shed
MY uncle, who lived at Quirindi, northern NSW, was a shearing contractor. He was not a knight in training. But he would regularly receive either the Women’s Weekly or the Northern Daily Leader in the mail, I can’t remember which one, addressed to him plus the suffix Esquire. Admittedly, this was in the last century, probably 60 or more years ago. The Women’s Weekly was in the big format and it actually came out weekly, usually with a member of the royal family on the cover. The address on this newspaper or magazine was the only occasion he was addressed as esquire. I had felt he must have been important. He probably was. But he didn’t get the word ‘esquire’ by attending knight school. The word came from a boy who attended a knight, often carrying the knight’s shield. It comes from the French esquire, shield bearer. Knights eventually went out of style, when gunpowder was introduced. The word ‘esquire’ had lots of meanings. It meant raising to the rank of a squire or to attend to a lady as a squire. The word even led to many other words. How about ‘esquiredom’, or ‘esquirehood’, or ‘esquireship’, or ‘esquiry’? They even had ‘esquiress’, a female squire.
my
LAURIE BARBER
This last word dated from 1596 and sometimes meant a small slave girl carrying the musket. I still don’t know why my uncle was called ‘esquire’. He was a shearing contractor for goodness sake. Of course, he was a good one and I learnt a lot in the shearing sheds around Quirindi, none of which I can repeat here. I believe ‘esquire’ is a longer version of ‘squire’. The first use of the word that I could find came in 1290 and it represented a man of good birth (you should have heard those stories in the shearing sheds) who attended a knight. My big dictionary says it represented ‘one ranking next to a knight under the feudal system of military service and tenure’. Many years later it was placed after the surname as a designation of rank, or a person who held a rank similar to a medieval squire. So
an ‘esquire’ was a person who was similar to a ‘squire’. That sounds a bit redundant to me. The word referred to a nobleman or ‘other high dignitary’ but then the dictionary says the word was often used jestingly by Shakespeare. The dictionary said the word has been used for a country gentleman not formally a squire. It goes on to say the word has been used for a justice of the peace, a lawyer, or a judge, or more widely to any local dignitary. The word has been used for a lover. My uncle loved sheep, but he had never been to New Zealand to my knowledge. Finally, it says the word ‘squire’ was sometimes in ‘contemptuous’ use. Now we’re getting somewhere. The word is apparently used more frequently in the United States than in Australia, or in New Zealand. It often means ‘an escort to an escort’. I think I know what that means. If the word was used by the Women’s Weekly, I have to say that my uncle never read this magazine. He always handed it over to his wife. I remember he always ended an argument by saying his wife gave his sheepdogs fleas. Then he would leave before she could think of an answer. lauriebarber.com; lbword@midcoast.com.au

Cassar-Daley:
Telling some ‘home’ truths
Australian country singing star Troy Cassar-Daley wll be baring his soul at Kempsey’s Slim Dusty Centre
By LIZZIE McLEOD
AUSTRALIAN country music superstar Troy Cassar-Daley is about to share is life story with the region where he grew up - and he promises ‘no sugar coating’. This September Cassar-Daley will be making a pilgrimage to the iconic Slim Dusty Centre in Kempsey as part of a tour to launch his autobiography and his new album, both titled ‘Things I Carry Around’. “You get to an age where you get quite sentimental and you start looking at photos and you think, ‘you better start writing things down’,” Cassar-Daley told Your Local Independent. His book and album go hand in hand to
produce a truly intimate experience for his readers and listeners. “I think my new album got a whole lot more personal,” he says. “Being from the north coast of New South Wales, very close to Kempsey, I think you really want to make sure that the songs are definite stories in their own right. “I would look through old photos and start to write from the photos and think about my grandparents, where they worked, my grandmother being born near Nambucca Heads,
so all through there has always been very special to me.” Cassar-Daley performed at the recent opening of the Slim Dusty Centre and feels honoured and excited to be performing there again in September. “Growing up two hours north of Kempsey, I always felt proud living in an area that Slim was from,” he said. “I really loved what Slim stood for when I was a kid. He introduced me to Australia through his songs before I had even travelled out
of Grafton. We have played together and the quality of conversations I would have with him are things that I will never forget.” Cassar-Daley has been writing songs across a successful span of 26 years as a performer, so it’s no surprise that the same story telling rhythm is evident in his book. However, he shares a lot of his stories for the very first time, and it’s not all sunshine and rainbows. “The story telling thing, that’s what I’ve done for a living my whole life,” he says. “It is conversational, like you are spilling yarns across the table from someone, which is what the Kempsey show will be about too. “Although, I’m sitting back worried people will either judge me on the book because I wasn’t an angel when I was younger. I guess that’s what life is all about. “What my wife said when I first started writing the book was ‘Please don’t sugarcoat this to make out that you’re someone that you’re not’.” Cassar-Daley loves visiting the Port Macquarie region and has spent many years touring up and down its coast. “It’s beautiful, Port,” he said. “I’ve played at Panthers many times, and the old Port RSL. When I was 18,19, 20, I would play in bands up and down the Mid North Coast. They were very supportive of me as well.” Of the new album he says: “I have to say that the title track ‘Things I Carry Around’ really does resonate with me. That’s why I chose it as well as the title for the book. I think we all have stuff that we carry around.” Troy Cassar-Daley will be launching his new book and album ‘Things I Carry Around’ as well as performing, in a truly intimate and special setting on Thursday September 8 at the Slim Dusty Centre, Kempsey. Tickets are $85.70 from www.oztix.com.au or call the Slim Dusty Centre on 02 6562 6533. The release of ‘Things I Carry Around’ album will be on August 26 and the book will be released on August 30. MID North Coast residents can expect to hear some major new announcements in the next couple of months, as the North Coast Primary Health Network unfolds its first round of projects to begin reforming mental health and alcohol and other drug programs in our region. Since the beginning of the year the Primary Health Network has done amazing work assessing the level of need across the region, to help them plan for a new set of programs basically from Forster to the Queensland border. And local community-based activities already offering individual and group mental health support have been putting their case for more secure funding. Most notable in that list is Endeavour Mental Health Recovery Clubhouse at Hamilton Green in Port Macquarie. Despite huge community support over the past few years, this project has yet to attract mainstream funding. Yet it provides person-valuing and confidence building programs that are changing lives every week, including helping people find jobs. Part of the Schizophrenia Fellowship of NSW, Endeavour Clubhouse is one of the most successful programs run by the Fellowship. With over 200 members and a day program providing healthy menu planning and food preparation, empowering communication skills and a transition to work program, Endeavour is already a State leader in rehabilitation. Partnering with Port Macquarie Community College in running skills training and life development courses, Endeavour is reaching out for more collaborations to assist people to get well and stay well. The college also runs the Absolutely Everybody Choir of the School of Hard Knocks, and its own Moving Forward With Confidence small group sharing sessions. Plus the Life Skills Express eclectic program of courses to help people in recovery to follow their passion in leaning and life development. We are also keen to assist carers who need equivalent support in their attempts to help their loved ones find the best path through life. The new owners of Netherby House Bed and Breakfast and River Cafe, Bobi and Richard Kemp, are loving everyday of their new life
Another ‘Kemp’sey chapter By SUE PATERICK SIPPING high tea in the lush and tranquil garden of Netherby House Bed and Breakfast and River Café, feels as if time has slipped below the Macleay River’s mirrored surface back to the early 1900s. And when Richard and Bobi Kemp took one look at the wonderful view and one of Kempsey’s grandest old houses, they knew they had found their new home. “It was one of those ‘love-at-first-sight’ moments,” said Richard, a qualified chef who has been in the hospitality industry with his family since he was 15. “It’s just beautiful and it drew us straight away and within half an hour we decided we were going to buy the business.” Both originally from Brisbane, although Richard spent his early childhood in Wollongong, the couple had been travelling around Australia looking for a new business venture. Fate stepped in during a dinner with friends in Melbourne while they were Googling places with the same name as theirs. Having the last name of Kemp led Richard and Bobi to Kempsey and their new riverside paradise. The history of Netherby House dates back to 1922, when Hamilton Gordon Elrington employed the Allen Brothers to build it. He then founded H G Elrington Co Ltd,
Fast facts WHILE no relation to Richard and Bobi Kemp, Major William Kemp was one of the Macleay Valley’s early settlers. He came to Australia in 1837 with his wife and seven children on a ship carrying convicts to take up a military detachment at Port Macquarie. After his service, he established a cattle station at Dungay Creek and an outstation at Toorumbee. However, Kempsey wasn’t named after Major Kemp. It was Enoch Rudder who founded the town in 1836 and named it Kempsey after a town in Worcestershire, England. which was a stock and station agency for real estate and produce in Kempsey for many decades. Richard and Bobi intend to honour Netherby’s heritage character and they never tire of watching the dark Macleay River flow by. “Having everything at our fingertips is great because we used to drive 40 minutes each way to work,” said Richard. “Now we just fall out of bed and we’re at work, but it’s harder to call in sick.” For the past two months they have concentrated on getting to know their customers’
tastes and taking over from the well-regarded last owners. So far they have kept a similar menu and their daily specials are proving popular. To keep their food fresh and healthy Richard and Bobi source local produce where possible, from milk to meat, fish and fruit and vegetables. Their sumptuous deserts are all homemade on the premises. They also plan to remodel the café, cover part of the al fresco dining area and build a jetty so boating enthusiasts can pull in for a cup of delicious coffee and a bite to eat. Even in wet weather, diners can still enjoy river views from Netherby’s wide verandah or a cosy open fire in the charming dining room. Netherby House is fully licenced and caters for functions and celebrations from weddings to engagements, anniversaries, retreats and business meetings It is also the perfect place to get away, relax and unwind. The historic home features four elegant bedrooms with queen-sized beds and has a four-star rating from the NRMA. The River Café is open six days a week from 10am to 3.30pm for brunch and lunch, and is closed on Mondays. “We are a big team and a family,” said Richard, describing Netherby’s staff. “It’s our home and we want people to enjoy it.” Contact Netherby on 6563 1777 or visit its website.

Council proud of ‘teamwork’ WITH the local government elections nearly upon us (September 10), Port MacquarieHastings Council will soon enter ‘caretaker mode’, whereby no council meeting will occur leading up to the election. Most councillors have determined whether or not they will once again nominate for reelection and I would like to take this opportunity as Mayor, to personally thank all councillors for their efforts over the past four years. The role of councillor is often timeconsuming, meaning long hours away from family and friends working for the benefit of the broader community. There are detailed briefings, portfolio meetings and public council meetings to attend,

alongside large volumes of material to digest in preparation for making important decisions that affect our area. As fellow ratepayers, councillors are representative of all 78,000 residents and know that whatever decisions are made, not everyone will be satisfied.
The current group of councillors have been a pleasure to work with, have respected the views of a broad cross-section of our community and have represented each of our towns and villages with passion and diligence. Whilst there has been robust and rigorous debate on many important matters before council, by and large these have been dealt with in a courteous, respectful and collaborative fashion. The importance of working together to provide strong governance should not be underestimated. Through the work of councillors, we have been able to improve Council’s effectiveness and efficiency in many areas such as infrastructure delivery, improved finances and community representation.
This in turn has a positive impact on our quality of life through an improved economy, healthy environment and more connected social structures. To those who are re-contesting the next election, all the very best in your campaign and I would be happy and proud to work beside you once more on the important issues for our community and the future vision for our area. For those not re-contesting the election, thank you on behalf of the community for the work you have done, the things you have achieved and for the commitment you have honoured. I hope you will look back on your time as councillor with pride and satisfaction on a job well done.

STATE MATTERS
With Leslie Williams State Member for Port Macquarie
FIRST Strategic Plan for Children and Young People: I welcome the launch of the NSW Government’s first ever legislated plan to help children and young people thrive. The three-year NSW Strategic Plan for Children and Young People will help ensure children and young people in the Hastings have opportunities to thrive, get the services they need and have their voice heard. The NSW Government is committed to making a positive difference to the lives of everyone in NSW, regardless of their age. Our young people are our future. With this first-ever legislated Strategic Plan for Children and Young People, we now have a roadmap in place which outlines what the NSW Government is doing, and more importantly, what it will do for children and local young people and across our state in the future. The NSW Government is leading the nation when it comes to engaging with and delivering for children and young people. As part of developing the Strategic Plan, the Office of the Advocate of Children and Young People consulted with more than 4,000 children and young people right across NSW. For more information about the plan, go to www.acyp.nsw.gov.au/ Donate Life: Our community members are being encouraged to let their loved ones know their wishes when it comes to organ donation. This week is DonateLife week which provides a timely reminder to discuss organ donation with family and friends, ensuring they are aware of your final decision. Organ and tissue donation can ultimately save someone’s life and one way to ensure your wishes are known is to register to become a donor. This is a selfless act that could provide someone with a second chance at life. Almost 70 per cent of residents in NSW have not registered their donation decisions on the Australian Organ Donor Register. Organ donation is a very rare event, with only one per cent of deaths occurring in circumstances that allow organ donation to take place. Discussing organ and tissue donation is difficult but it prepares our loved ones for the rare circumstance in which they will be asked to make this choice. One conversation with loved ones today could save many lives in the future. To register and for more information, visit go to www.donatelife.gov.au.

School cooking thanks to Port City FATE and good fortune have combined to create a handy windfall for the Hastings Public School P&C (HPSPC). Recently some members of the ‘Easties Crew 4 You’ (a volunteer community service initiative organised by the Port City Bowling Club) were assisting at a ‘50s Rock’N’Roll fundraising event put on by the (HPSPC). The Hastings Public School have recently expanded to over 680 students and accordingly school event attendances have also jumped significantly leading to increased demand on catering services at these events.
WHAT’S FOR DINNER?
The Crew noted that the existing BBQ was just not keeping pace with the new high levels of demand and so suggested that the HPSPC should consider submitting an application for a Port City Bowling Club ‘Club Grant’ specifically to upgrade the BBQ. The submission proved successful and with the Board of Directors approval the HPSPC have recently purchased a brand new BBQ. My House MY HOME Aussies may have to say goodbye to the beer fridge THE great Australian beer fridge could soon join the Tasmanian Tiger and the Singer sewing machine as extinct national treasures if energy prices continue to rise. A survey recently found that 35% of Australians say they own a beer fridge but 71% of Australians are now making lifestyle sacrifices to afford their energy bills. Beer fridges can chew through more than $250 a year. So there’s little doubt that many Australians will be forced to let them go in order to afford energy costs. $250 is about one-eighth of the average annual electricity bill. That’s why Big Energy
Switch Campaign Director Joel Gibson is calling on Australians to make a choice: “The time has come for an excruciating decision that no Australian should be forced to make. It’s either the beer fridge or lower power bills: you can’t have both. “We don’t want to see people giving up their culture in order to survive, but unless we can do something about the rising cost of energy bills, they may have to. “It’s unAustralian, but it doesn’t have to be this way. People still have a choice; join the Big Energy Switch and help us fight back”. Over 60,000 Australians who have joined the
Big Energy Switch campaign took the survey since it launched just 3 weeks ago. The campaign was launched after electricity price rises on July 1 of over $200 for the average house in some states and have increased by 120% over a decade nationally. The Big Energy Switch campaign aims to use the huge buying power of 80,000 Australian households to unlock group-discounted energy offers. Joining the Big Energy Switch is entirely cost and obligation free. Consumers who wish to join can go to www.onebigswitch.com.au.
Trust key to brand power “
“
In uncertain times, the brands that continue to offer quality and substance remain at the front of the pack
TRUST has become an increasingly precious commodity in our lives. And in 2016, Guide Dogs remain at the head of the pack as our most trusted charity, Hills Hoist has cleared a load of famous names to be our most iconic brand, while Dyson has cleaned up as the overall No 1 most trusted brand in the land. The annual survey of Australia’s Most Trusted Brands – published exclusively in Australian Reader’s Digest - reveals the organisations, products and services that enjoy a truly special bond with the public. This is not a reader survey – but a fully commissioned and independent poll involving a cross-section of 2,400 Australians and conducted by leading agency Catalyst Research, with the results published exclusively in Australian Reader’s Digest. “Trust is essential and hard earned, sometimes across generations, and can translate to allimportant profits and jobs,” notes Australian Reader’s Digest Managing Editor, Louise Waterson. “The rise of social media, and its ability to take word-of-mouth endorsements to a whole new audience, has also introduced an interesting new dynamic to the importance of keeping customers happy. Many of the more successful companies are certainly pro-active in this area.” In uncertain times, the brands that continue to offer quality and substance remain at the front of the pack. Year after year, the Trusted Brands survey finds recurring themes and brand
attributes - consistency, reliability and value for money. Consumers are savvy at decoding brand messages and a dependable product can create a loyalty that will reward the company involved for years, and even generations. In the world of brands, trust is paramount. The survey has revealed Australia’s most trusted brands across 65 categories. We like to sizzle our snags on a Weber and you can’t beat a Four’N Twenty pie. Toyota has again topped the car category, and we prefer it to have Bridgestone tyres. We feel confident floating around on a P&O cruise, we reach for Vanish Napisan to remove stains, and Bunnings has won our faith in the retailing sector. If we have to do the vacuuming we want a
Dyson in our hands. And when it comes to pure indulgence, we’ll reach for some Peter’s ice-cream or Cadbury chocolate, possibly after we’ve enjoyed a nice beverage – either a cup of Lipton tea or a Corona beer, depending on our thirst. The survey reveals our most trusted brands from biscuits to banks, from first aid to frozen food, and from paint to pest control. Clever brands are using social media to help build relevance and engagement with customers. It is a two-way exchange. From companies offering special member-only deals, to customers being able to gauge how well a negative comment or complaint is dealt with and resolved. Social media has brought brand performance into the public domain, making exchanges
transparent and brands accountable. In this tough arena, only the most honest brands with a history of being reliable, consistent and genuine can succeed. Australia’s ‘top ten’ most trusted brands in 2016: 1) DYSON 2) ENERGIZER 3) DURACELL 4) DULUX 5) DETTOL 6) LIPTON 7) TWININGS 8) SAMSUNG 9) JOHNSON & JOHNSON 10) JOHN WEST

Glasshouse hosts youth orchestra ONE of the world’s best youth symphonic orchestras, Mannheim Symphony Youth Orchestra, will be performing a matinee at the Glasshouse at 2pm on Sunday (August 7). Hosted by the Regional Conservatorium, Conservatorium Mid North Coast, the orchestra was founded in 1977 and is based at the Mannheim Music School, Germany. Ninety students from the surrounding regions as well as from Mannheim, practice and rehearse weekly at the music school. From this group a select 62 young musicians are travelling to Australia for a southern hemisphere ‘Summer Tour’. Their conductor on this occasion will be Jan-Paul Reinke, who has worked with the orchestra since February of 2016 and comes with a long list of conducting credits within and beyond Germany. The high quality of the youth orchestra’s work is attested by CDs successfully produced and marketed, along with the annual concert performance schedule of 10 to 15 per year, along with successful international trips to Finland, Australia, Italy, Japan, Canada, Norway, Sweden, USA, Hungary and Cyprus. They will be fresh from their role in ‘The Prodigy Collective’, a three-day international gathering of top level youth orchestras showcasing exceptional emerging talent. From

recalculations was better than we had anticipated.” Despite revised asset valuations, Council’s existing income is still not enough to offset the funds required for maintaining and replacing the assets. To generate more money for this purpose Council have looked at reducing what it costs to deliver the expected services to the community. “By continuing the service review we started last year, Council has committed to finding $500,000 in cash based efficiency savings over the next three years, which will have a significant impact on the bottom line,” said Mr Rawlings. This commitment comes on top of $3.2million in annual savings found in the past five years, as part of previous efforts to make Council’s operations more financially viable. The revised calculations and expectation of savings in the cost of delivering Council services, has meant that the latest Fit for the Future proposal includes a much smaller variation to the rates than was previously submitted. “We now estimate the need for a 7% increase in rates above the rate peg in the 2018/19 financial year.”
KEMPSEY Shire Council has endorsed a proposal to be submitted to the NSW State Government for Council to be reassessed under the Fit for the Future reform process. Council will meet six of the seven criteria under the proposed plan, with the final indicator to be met in the future. Council’s General Manager David Rawlings is confident that the work carried out over the last 12 months on determining the true cost of assets, finding efficiency savings and improving the road network will reflect positively in the reassessment. “We have gone back over the calculations and assumptions that go into our Ten Year Financial Plan, which has allowed us to more accurately determine our future income and costs,” he said. “The rate that we had calculated the depreciation of our assets was much higher than other Councils and this is an area we have corrected. “We have carefully reviewed all the assets, such as the roads, bridges and water facilities. By reassessing the value and the lifespan of our assets we now have a better picture of where we sit and the end result of these

REGISTRATIONS are open for the fourth annual Head to Head Walk Run proudly presented by the Crescent Head Lions Club and made possible by the support from a number of local business sponsors. Get your team together and start your training schedule, or, set yourself a personal challenge. How about fancy dress, pick a theme and dress to suit it. This year there is a cash incentive to the first, youngest and oldest participants as well as the first to cross the line in the 5km, 10km and 20km distances. So now there is even more reason to be a part of this amazing community event. It is completely noncompetitive, no timers or pressure, your personal best is only measured by how much fun you are having. Any funds or donations on the day will go towards supporting the Kempsey Domestic Violence Monitoring Committee who will have representatives available on the day to collect your show of support. Join this group of fun loving, community minded people on the beach at Crescent Head on September 11 but you need to register now. If you aren’t the energetic type but still would like to be involved, the Head to Head committee can use and many volunteers as possible. If you would like further information on becoming a volunteer or becoming a sponsor it’s never too late visit www.headtoheadwalkrun. org.au to register or for more information.

WITH the Olympics about to burst onto our TV screens, Australians always like to know that we have plenty of future champions in the offing. A small band of twenty-three North Coast swimmers from 10 clubs recently swam in 113 events at the Swimming NSW Country Short Course Championships held in Sydney. These championships take in swimmers from all over NSW with the exception of metropolitan Sydney. Kye Gill, 13 and Katharina McClure, 12, were first-timers competing as part of a squad representing the mid north coast and swam their personal bests. Sam Harris, also from Port Macquarie, had a good meet with 1 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze - a match set and appeared in the top ten places three times. Mark Thurgood from Kempsey appeared in the top ten six times and Adam Grant from Port Macquarie was once in the top ten placings for age and event. Kye said he ‘learnt to swim before he could walk’ and has been training with the squad at the Port Macquarie Swimming Club for four years, whereas Katharina grew up ‘swimming all the time’ and has been swimming competitively for seven years now, first with The Swimming Academy and now with the Port Macquarie Swimming Club. To qualify, Kye took 6 seconds off his personal best for the Under 13s 100m breast stroke to qualify and then shaved another 1.5 seconds off with a time of 1:28:03 at the Country Championships in Sydney. “Swimming is great discipline – I’ve grown up doing it, it’s a lifestyle – I just can’t quit,” explains Kye, who attends St Joseph’s Regional College at Port Macquarie. “I get to school feeling great after training – I feel really energetic.” Katharina’s personal best time was gained at

CLUB Championship Singles events are done and dusted for another year after seeing three good, spirited and very hotly contested finals last Saturday afternoon, July 30. In the Majors, Peter Ostler overcame a touch of the jitters at 27-2 to finally put away Graeme Copp 31-14. In the Minors, it was neck and neck for quite some time before Kevin ‘eyes’ Pampling stormed home over Allen Lewis 31-19, although the final score did not reflect the closeness of the game.

keep up his fitness. With both mum and dad being runners, Kye has shown he too can run when he got as far as the state level with the school cross country championships with no specific athletics training. Katharina likes to make a short term goal each
GOLF ROUND UP Port Macquarie Seaside Classic
THE 2016 Morgans CIMB Seaside Classic went down to the last putt with Dylan Perry from The Vintage Golf Club winning by one shot from Zac Mullins of The Australian. Perry was the overnight leader when he fired a two under par round at Port Macquarie Golf Club on Saturday, and he looked set to lead all the way when he established a four shot lead after the 12th hole on Sunday. However, three putts by Perry at both the 13th and 17th holes and birdies to Mullins at the 16th and 17th holes saw the pair level with one hole to play. Both Perry and Mullins played the hole well and had makeable birdie putts. Perry played first and sank his putt while Mullins, whose putt was shorter, missed his. Perry’s winning score of six under par 136 was made up of rounds of 69 and 67 and was the lowest 36 holes score ever recorded in the Seaside Classic. Mullins had rounds of 71 and 66 and third place went to Logan Toms from Moore Park with two even par rounds of 71. Best of the locals, was 17 years old Jackson Jubelin who had rounds of 73 and 72. His second round showed a lot of courage as he recovered from a poor start. Former Port Macquarie Golf Club member Kyle Flynn, who is now a member of Wynnum Golf Club in Queensland, had rounds of 72 and 73 to tie with Flynn. Port Macquarie’s Kane Pollard was a clear winner in the handicap section with a net score of 139. Paul Maslen from Moss Vale took out the Seniors’ prize with a five over par total. The Seaside Classic is Port Macquarie Golf Club’s premier event and next year will see its 50th staging.

term and this achievement has capped her goal to make the short course titles and now the long course titles will become her new goal. Kye has given thought to making the next Olympics after 2020 a dream, but before then, he hopes to make the state and country long course titles later this year, and the nationals thereafter. Until then, the black line is a point of focus as both Kye and Katharina concentrate hard on what their coaches, Michael Mullins or Fiona Connell wants them to put their efforts into. “Port Macquarie Swimming Club finished second to the strong Trinity Lismore Swim team, which was a great result as we are predominately a summer club,” said President of the Port Macquarie Swimming Club, Warren Phillips. Training for the new season started this week. Keep those upsets coming OK, great advice, and we nearly stole the chocolates. That was the story last week as Your Local Independent (YLI) urged tipsters to chance their arm as the NRL home and away rounds close in on the finish line. The Broncos’ loss to the Roosters was the only one we missed out on – most tipping comps will give you the draw (Titans v Sharks). With the help of hindsight, the Broncos was one that we could have grabbed as well. The Brisbane team have lost their mojo so it will be interesting to see how they fare tonight against the Dragons. YLI followers will feel a little robbed with the Titans/Sharks result. We tipped a Titans upset win here and were oh so close. It’s a pity the Titans continue to get a raw deal from the men with the whistle. However that historically is the case. Higher ranked teams seem to get the 50-50 calls more often. Some tough games again this weekend, so here we go, with five rounds left to get to the top! Dragons v Broncos (Thursday, August 4, 7.50pm, WIN Stadium, Wollongong): You would think the Broncos will be able to get out of their ‘funk’ and start their run into the finals with a win at WIN, the Wollongong home for the Dragons. However there is plenty of history between these two teams that will spark even more fire in St George. The Dragons were unlucky not to steal a win over the Bulldogs away from home last weekend and still have a glimmer of finals hope. Let’s start with an upset. • Your Local Independent Tips: Dragons Eels v Sea Eagles (Friday, August 5, 7.50pm, Pirtek Stadium. Parramatta): The Sea Eagles are finishing with a flurry and are part of the logjam fighting for an eighth spot on the
ladder. The Eels have nothing to play for except for ‘what ifs’. • Your Local Independent Tips: Sea Eagles Knights v Bulldogs (Saturday, August 6, 3pm, Hunter Stadium, Newcastle): Would love to throw the Knights in here … but just can’t. The Bulldogs were a little off-colour last weekend against the Dragons, but still won. They have enough in the tank to put away Newcastle. • Your Local Independent Tips: Bulldogs. Sharks v Raiders (Saturday, August 6, 5.30pm, Southern Cross Stadium, Cronulla): OK, upset number two. The Sharks’ winning run ended last weekend, but they still escaped with a draw and one point. That will have raised just a few question marks in players’ minds. The Raiders meanwhile flogged the Rabbits and are in third spot. They have an exciting team who aren’t thinking about their win-loss record, they

just want to get out there and play. • Your Local Independent Tips: Raiders Storm v Rabbitohs (Saturday, August 6, 7.30pm, AAMI Park, Melbourne): No upset here. The Storm are in ‘take no prisoners’ mode and will stew the Rabbits. • Your Local Independent Tips: Storm Titans v Warriors (Sunday, August 7, 2pm, Cbus Stadium, Gold Coast): Real tough one. The heart says Titans, but the stats say Warriors. The Gold Coast team have always struggled against the physical and ad-lib style of the New Zealanders. Early betting markets have the Titans as slight favourites. They are at home but have injury concerns over several players, including playmaker Tyrone Roberts. The Warriors are building towards a finals campaign and are the one team that can out-muscle, and ‘out-attack’ any team on their day – it’s just their day doesn’t
happen often enough. Seven against eight. Toss a coin. • Your Local Independent Tips: Titans Tigers v Cowboys (Sunday, August 7, 4pm, Leichhardt Oval, Sydney): The Cowboys could still be without Thurston, but they are the defending premiers and have enough depth and character not to lose too much ground if their captain remains on the injured list. • Your Local Independent Tips: Cowboys Panthers v Roosters (Monday, August 8, 7pm, Pepper Stadium, Penrith): Put this one down to another upset. The Panthers have been solid all season, but ‘solid’ doesn’t win premierships. The Roosters won’t be in the finals dance either, but showed against the Broncos last weekend what could have been. • Your Local Independent Tips: Roosters
