‘Cuppa’ fights killer By CHRISTINA PARKIN
MARGARET Hollis is making a lot of noise about a silent killer. The experienced Port Macquarie nurse, midwife and diabetic educator has fought, and overcome, ovarian cancer. Her inspirational story has a chilling message – no woman is immune. “I just thought I was putting too much weight on despite eating sensibly, and my belly was growing,” said Mrs Hollis. “I looked like I was twelve months pregnant, and I was having some urinary symptoms. “When I went to my doctor he ordered an ultrasound, which showed the tumour and an enormous amount of fluid. I had to have the fluid drained at the John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle prior to three treatments of chemotherapy before surgery to remove the tumour and affected organs and then more chemotherapy. “I had a nightmarish time with the loss of 20 kilograms from the surgery and three months of chemotherapy which gave me a bad reaction with constant diarrhoea. Mrs Hollis attributes her survival to the ‘power of people, positive thinking and bloody good medical care’. However everyone’s journey can be very different. “I had amazing support from family, friends, neighbours and medical staff who constantly encouraged me to stay positive,” she says. Mini rail is back on track By CHRISTINA PARKIN
IF you can turn your passion for tinkering into fun for others, then it seems the Hastings Valley Miniature Railway has found the right track. When the club had to leave Timbertown in May 2010 and had to go into recess, the members had to start from scratch to find a way to turn their hobby into a more sustainable venture. Identifying the Yippin Creek Reserve as a potential site led the committee to have extensive consultations with the Lion’s Club, neighbours and the Port Macquarie Hastings Council before a development application received approval. “Everyone has been extremely supportive, especially Council, who have recognised how our organisation is keen to bring value to the site for the public,” said President, Mark Stoker – and yes, he gets the prize for the most appropriate surname for a committee member. “The neighbours have helped us all the way along, offering off-road parking and improvements that they see will help the visitors to the park on our running days. “Even our 30 members dug deep and paid ten years of subscriptions up front to allow us some cash flow,” explained Mr Stoker. Yippin Creek Reserve now boasts a circular track, with a station and side loop and a stateof-the-art carriage house to securely store the steam, diesel and electric trains and other equipment needed for the maintenance of the track and reserve. Provision has also been made for a porch to cover the area used by the local Wauchope Lions’ club for the barbeque provided for the monthly running event, held on the second Saturday of the month. A special opening event is being planned for Saturday, February 13, with the Member for Oxley, Ms Melinda Pavey opening the Mews Carriage House and the Mayor, Mr Peter Besseling opening the ‘Yippin Creek Reserve Station’. “We have really appreciated all the funding sources we have gained to ensure that our operation complies, not only with council and bushfire regulations, but the stringent safety guidelines specified by the Australian Association of Live Steamers Code of Practice,” said Mr Stoker. One Port Macquarie Hastings Council Grant enabled the installation of three-phase power cables and the movement of the water main for the fire hydrant. A Community Building Partnership Grant for $42,000 and a bequest from the estate of the late Barry Mew enabled the building of the carriage house, built to vandal and fire-proof standards. Another $4000 Port Macquarie Hastings Council Place-maker Grant has enabled the building of a small bridge to allow any excessive rain to properly drain away into Yippin Creek and not damage the infrastructure

Grandad John Betts enjoying a ride with granddaughters, Emily and Layla Betts in the reserve. “Even the shutters and doors have been built by the members in their sheds and powdercoated for protection,” explained Mr Stoker. “We also had a lot of support from local businesses such as Newman Steel for the bridge and O’Donnell and Hanlon, who assisted with a lot of the joinery for the internal storage. You remember that reference to appropriate committee member names? Traditionally, carriage houses stored stables and carriages and when converted to houses, were referred to as ‘mews’. So it is fitting that ‘The Mew Carriage House’ is named in honour of long term and hard-working member, Barry Mew, who passed away shortly after the original track had been
The Mew Carriage House
laid in 2012. Unfortunately, Barry had not been able to yet see a miniature train running on the track he helped to build. New members are always welcome, especially of the tinkering kind and the club boasts six female enthusiasts. “The most important member is Ernie with a ‘U’,” quipped Mr Stoker, pointing to a large, boiling urn. “We have our regular monthly running day and the community can come and enjoy the train rides for a donation of $2 for three circuits – as long as they wear covered shoes. They have become very popular between 10 and 2, and many families combine the rides with a birthday party. “We usually do three to four hundred circuits,
but have done up to 600. “The other day we meet is a ‘working day’ ensuring all the maintenance of the engines and the reserve is organised – there’s lots to do, but it’s easy because we have a great crew.” And what’s down the track? “Well, we are working on a mobility-assisted siding for easier access for those persons to get onto a train, then we want to build an extra track with a turn-table and also steam bays for the maintenance of the steam engines,” explained Mr Stoker. For more information, go to the Wauchope Yippin Creek Railway Facebook page, but ensure you come on Saturday February 13 for a great day out.

Brought to you by
ONCE again, newspaper land has served up some more surprises. Most of which we could do without! With the Australia Day holiday we were really put under the pump with a short week to do the same amount of work. Thankfully we are accustomed to working to tight deadlines and managed for the most part to have everything ready. We were all feeling pretty pleased with our efforts and the office staff were able to take the day off. Our behind the scenes team of graphic artist and consulting editor weren’t quite so lucky but once again put out a fantastic paper for the community and made the deadline with plenty of time to spare. Great effort team, thank you. Wednesday was when the fun began! The driver who normally picks up and delivers the paper rang to say he had broken down and we wouldn’t get the papers until Friday! So, at 2.30pm my husband treks off to Sydney with the ute and trailer to pick up the paper. Nothing unusual about that - until he had a fall off the back of the ute while trying to protect the papers from the rain in Newcastle. Long story short, he is now on crutches with a severe case of torn ligaments in his ankle, blood clots in his leg and a dislocated shoulder … and he drove home, just so the paper was on time! That, my friends, is dedication to the community!

No answer yet to crossing dilemna I WISH to express my concern that there is no safe crossing between the lights at the intersection of Gordon Street and Hindmarsh Street/Ocean Drive, and the ‘T’ intersection with Horton Street opposite the Historic Cemetery. I’m 83 and walk at least 7 km to keep active and frequently walk to the shops daily from my home in Table Street. I find I can’t cross Gordon Street safely as the amount of traffic and the speed in which it moves is increasingly dangerous. It’s not that I
representative who couldn’t answer my questions as to why they have approved the development of Hungry Jacks without considering how the line-up of cars hinders traffic flow through the roundabout. This intersection should have been a set of lights with a pedestrian crossing. The past promises of double white lines in Hollingworth Street were honoured, but now they have worn so badly that cars just ignore them and frequently cross over the middle of the road when turning into Table Street.
am too slow, as I can walk briskly, but there is no opportunity to do so safely. There are three pedestrian refuge islands - one opposite Finnian’s pub, one opposite the Vinnies Op Shop and the other opposite Grower’s Market. However, there is either a bank up of cars attempting to get round the two roundabouts at Horton Street or Hollingworth Street, with the cars whizzing around at every opportunity they can get. The vehicles don’t wish to slow down for any likely pedestrian trying to find a way across. I even met with a council
I tried to lodge a complaint with the Customer Service Centre by email and was sent back a document that my computer won’t read unless I download some other software. Why can’t I just get some simple answers from council? Will it take the death of a pedestrian crossing Gordon Street before council decides to consider the safety of pedestrians as well as vehicles? What a special city RECENTLY I had my very special opal and white gold ring cut off my finger by Steve at Heritage Jewellers, for safety reasons. He placed it in a small brown bag with the business logo on it and after leaving the shop I subsequently lost the bag.I was devastated because of my carelessness. People on Horton Street helped me search as well. Later I placed an ad in the Independent. A close friend assured me the ring would be returned, but I was sceptical. Having given up hope after 2 weeks, I had a call from Adrienne at Heritage to say someone had given them the package with ring intact. I was delighted of course and asked if they knew who it was. When I left Horton Street that day, I called into the camera shop in the Galleria and must have had the small package on my lap, dropping it onto

The range of U3A courses has no limits and the Kempsey-Macleay Valley branch’s course list is inspired and developed by its members
By SUE PATERICK WHETHER you want to learn yoga or mediation, ceramics or chess, self-defence or canoeing, ballroom dancing or French, the Kempsey-Macleay Valley U3A (or University of the Third Age) begins its first term next week. While the official enrolment day was last Monday, it’s still not too late to enrol in any of the 38 exciting courses. According to the U3A Network NSW, it all began in France in 1968 when new legislation required universities to provide more community education. So in 1973 Toulouse University began a course for local retired people and the first U3A was established. The idea grew and spread across Europe to Canada and America. When the concept reached England the courses moved away from the university model so members could be teachers as well as learners. When it arrived in Australia in 1984 the courses diversified again, with physical and craft courses included. These courses were designed to offer mature-aged people an opportunity to learn and teach new skills. There are now over 3000 U3A groups across Australia and the world. Yet, each town or city will offer a range of different courses depending on who is available to teach and what facilities exist in the area. The Kempsey-Macleay Valley U3A has been operating since 2003 with the aim of offering a wide variety of learning opportunities at an

Its course coordinator, Fran Tarbox, said it was a marvellous way for people to share their passion. There are four terms each year running from six to eight weeks with most courses held weekly. New courses for this term include Ceramics, Chess for Beginners, Novel Adventures with Moll and Tom, and Yoga. Returning courses are Around the World, Rocks On-Gemology and Self Defence for Seniors. Old favourites include Balance ‘N’ Bones, Ballroom Dancing, Beading Workshops, Bridge, Buddhist Meditation, Canoeing, Card Making, Croquet at South West Rocks, French and Friday Films.
Also on offer are Fun and Games at the RSL, Gardening, Macleay Meanders, Mahjong, Scrapbooking, Squash and Racquetball, Table Tennis, Swimming, Tribal Belly Dance and Tuesday Tappers. The range of U3A courses has no limits and the Kempsey-Macleay Valley branch’s course list is inspired and developed by its members. All members and leaders are volunteers and new class leaders are always welcome. Cuppa fights killer • From Page 1 “I couldn’t go out during the treatment, but receiving cards and texts when I was even too sick to talk, kept my spirits up.” Unfortunately Mrs Hollis is in the minority. Only 43% of the almost 1,500 women diagnosed with ovarian cancer each year will survive, compared to 90% of women diagnosed with breast cancer. This February, Ovarian Cancer Australia is urging Australians to recognise the signs and symptoms of ovarian cancer, know their family history and know how to help through their Know Ovarian Cancer campaign. Ovarian Cancer Australia are also hoping to raise funds for more research into screening and effective treatments for ovarian cancer through the organisation of a fundraising Afternoon Teal – the colour designated for ovarian cancer. Women who are diagnosed with ovarian cancer report four types of symptoms most frequently ie abdominal or pelvic pain; increased abdominal size or persistent abdominal bloating; needing to urinate often or urgently; or feeling full after eating a small amount. Wednesday, February 24, is set down for Teal Ribbon Day or it is hoped workplaces or social groups will organise an ‘Afternoon Teal’. It can take any form - a high tea, picnic, golf day or gala dinner. There are helpful resources at www. afternoonteal.net.au In Port Macquarie, Margaret is hoping to help spread awareness of ovarian cancer-related symptoms and is grateful for the support from John and Trish Tracey from ‘Tea and Treasures’ at 76 William Street to host an Afternoon Teal on Wednesday, February 17 from 2-4pm. Tickets for $15 will include a beverage and scones with a donation and lucky raffle ticket and can be bought from ‘Tea and Treasures’, Your Local Independent office on the corner of Gordon and Gore Street and Plunkett’s Pharmacy on the corner of Gordon and Ocean Street. Maurie accepted the honour of the house being named after him for all the volunteers who have helped Macleay Options over the years. Below: Macleay Options’ Maurie Britten House officially opened last week and will soon be ready for it’s first residents to move in.
New ‘House’ a godsend TO allow people with an intellectual disability to age in a safe, friendly environment, Macleay Options opened the Maurie Britten House last week. The NSW Government’s Family and Community Services - Aging, Disability and Homecare provided $2.014 million in funding to purchase land and construct an independentliving house and three, two-apartment villas in East Kempsey. Hotondo Homes Kempsey is constructing the villas, which should be completed by July. A 2009 feasibility study, performed in conjunction with Southern Cross University, found that a specialist-accommodation model of support for people with an intellectual disability was needed, which would allow them to age in a suitable environment with coworkers and friends. Macleay Options’ Administration Manager, Mrs Ros Roach, said the study found that most intellectually-disabled people lived with their aging parents or carers and the only option available was a nursing home, even though they were in their 40s. To overcome this, Macleay Options identified the need to provide a supported living house that would accommodate six permanent residents and one short-term (respite) resident. Maurie Britten House provides each resident with their own bedroom and living room, plus an individual bathroom and kitchenette. There is also a Support Worker’s room for 24-hour care when required, and a communal kitchen, dining and lounge room so residents can choose to eat alone or with their friends. For the aging parents or carers of these residents this new supported-living model is a godsend.

By SUE PATERICK
Since 1962 Macleay Options has been supporting people with a disability and assisting their families and carers. A group of concerned parents, who shared the common goal of creating opportunities for children with an intellectual disability, started the organisation at a time when special education facilities in the region were very limited. In April 1982 the State Government began funding the disability support services. Additional vocational and accommodation services commenced, focusing on providing adults with accommodation support, day programs, and training and employment in supportive environments. Currently there are six business components. ‘Threads’ do anything with fabrics, from minor sewing repairs to volume production of custom items printed with unique designs. ‘Woodies’ are makers of quality wooden
furniture and pegs and stakes, with picnic tables, benches and bench seats a specialty. They also do collating and packing, leaflet distribution, shrink wrapping, and document shredding, and provide a full carwash service, including vacuuming and window washing. ‘Momacs’ are macadamia nut processing specialists, value adding to their products with delicious flavours. They also make macadamia oil and paste. The ‘Mowhawks’ mobile work crew undertake all types of ground and garden maintenance, specialising in lawn mowing. The Macleay Options Retail Shop, at 15 Smith Street Kempsey, offers a treasure trove of recycled clothes, jewellery, books and furniture at bargain prices, plus Momacs’ delicious range of nut products and handmade chocolates. Highway work on time CANBERRA CONNECTIONS With Dr David Gillespie Federal MP for Lyne
THROUGH the week I was delighted to see further progress on the Coalition’s massive $1.05-billion investment in the Pacific Highway upgrade between Port Macquarie and Kempsey. Construction is running on time and on budget with more than 930 direct jobs and over 2900 indirect jobs through the construction period to 2017. On Friday, girders were lifted into place for one of the new bridges being constructed as part of Port Macquarie’s new northern gateway at Blackman’s Point. The new northern ‘donut’ will be similar in size to the existing Oxley Highway interchange a few kilometres to the south. Also through the week, the Deputy Prime Minister Warren Truss and his Assistant Minister Michael McCormack announced that regional communities will be asked to contribute to a revamped regional development policy to be crafted by the Coalition Government this year. The policy will set out a long term vision for regional Australia. Central to this process will see Minister McCormack travel across the nation undertaking consultations. More often than not, the opportunities and solutions identified at the local level to meet local needs are the best. These consultations will be a direct channel for the Government to hear first-hand ideas that will harness the potential of regional Australia to build a more prosperous future. When we look at the big opportunities for Australia today and the decades ahead, regional Australia is at the epicentre of real growth potential. Be it producing the highest quality agricultural products in the world, capitalising on our rich natural resources or opening up more innovative small businesses, regional Australia needs to be at the forefront of our nation’s prosperity. We are already building first-class road and rail projects to underpin regional Australia’s growth through our record $50 billion investment in infrastructure and opening up northern Australia to fresh opportunities. As the Deputy Prime Minister said this week, our government is all about powering the regions and the economy. Our ongoing dialogue and partnerships with regional communities are crucial as the Australian economy responds to change. By continuing to engage and work in partnership with regional communities, the Australian Government will help build strong regional communities and businesses as national and global economies rapidly evolve – balancing both the opportunities and challenges of change.

STATE MATTERS
With Leslie Williams
By CHRISTINA PARKIN
State Member for Port Macquarie
A CHANGE is in the air with the recent revamping of the committee for the 2WAY-FM community radio station based at Wauchope. While everything is working well, incoming President Stan Hillard is hoping to revitalise and freshen up the services the community radio offers the local region. Currently 2WAY-FM provides listeners with a ‘Live and Local’ presence by having presenters in the studio between 6am and 10pm seven days a week and is the only radio broadcaster in the region to be able to claim all local content during these hours. “Many of the presenters have quite a following, not only in Australia, but overseas as well,” said Mr Hillard. This year they hope to host their 30th birthday celebration, marking the beginning of their first transmission from December 6, 1986, from a caravan located at nearby Pappinbarra. “Marcia Wells, one of our life members and recent nominee for the Port MacquarieHastings Council’s Australia Day Awards, has presented a weekly radio program during those 30 years called ‘Where Country Is’.” Another goal this year for 2WAY-FM is to re-apply to the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) to retain their Community Broadcasting licence, which will involve conducting a ‘test transmission’ with customer feedback. A revamp of their website is also in the planning stages and will contain an easy link for downloading and streaming their broadcasts live over the internet. “We have a wonderful team of volunteers, in addition to the presenters, who contribute to all aspects of running the station, from the technical to the administrative aspects,” said Mr Hillard. “We can always do with more assistance,
HISTORIC Deal For Surf Clubs: An historic agreement between the NSW Government and Surf Life Saving NSW, will cut red tape for surf clubs so they can focus on keeping the state’s beaches safe. For the first time Surf Life Saving NSW will not have to go through a lengthy process to renew long-term leases, saving councils and surf clubs time and money that can be better spent on making our beaches safer for swimmers. The new club lease package removes the need for clubs and councils to negotiate new arrangements and provides a 20-year minimum lease. About 80 per cent of surf clubs are located on Crown land, and this landmark agreement allows surf clubs and councils to sign a standard lease agreement, removing the need for lengthy negotiation or drafting of complex contracts. To assist surf clubs and councils to understand the new approach, a position statement, Authorising surf life saving clubs’ use of Crown land in NSW, has been released, and is available at www.crownland.nsw.gov.au. Free Mediation Takes Heat Out Of Neighbourhood Disputes: The NSW Government’s free mediation service, Community Justice Centres (CJCs), is taking the heat out of neighbourhood conflict this summer. Neighbours are being encouraged to seek help from CJCs before feuds get out of hand. During the holiday period we often become more aware of our neighbours, and disputes can arise as many of us spend more time at home. Community Justice Centres can see a spike in neighbour disputes including noisy air conditioners and pool pumps, and tree removal to prepare for bushfire season. To find out more information, please call the Community Justice Centre on 1800 990 777.
From left, President Stan Hillard with fellow volunteers, Liz Faassen and veteran radio presenter, John Tingle and we conduct regular barbeques for our supporters, presenters and our valued sponsors to connect and identify better ways of engaging with our local community. “These barbeques are a great way of meeting everyone and for a potential volunteer to gauge how to offer their time.” The station’s technical team looks after equipment at two major sites. These are the two studios and broadcast equipment room located at the community media centre in Cameron Street, Wauchope, and the transmission site on Mount Cairncross, near Telegraph Point. “We have a wide range of presenters such as long-term presenter John Tingle, to newcomers
like high school student Angus Gill, who presents ‘Just Country’ on Sunday nights and did ‘live’ crosses from the Tamworth Country Music Festival,” said Mr Hillard. “There have been many starters in the media from their time with us – Robert Nardella, Kerry Griffiths from 2SM and 2DAY-FM and Allison Langdon, 60 Minutes reporter. If you are interested in getting involved with 2WAY-FM, contact can be by email to secretary@2wayfm.org or ring the station on 6585 2233 and their weekly program can be viewed on their 2WAY FM-103.9 Facebook site at www.facebook.com/2WAYFM/

JOHN BETTS
How long have you lived in or around the Macleay? I was born at Kempsey Hospital and lived in Kempsey till I was six before moving to South West Rocks. I lived on the ‘outskirts’ in Simpson Street, opposite Billy Simpson’s market garden, which was an orchard as well. My father worked for Shell at the distribution installation. After attending Kempsey High and working briefly with Shell, I left the Rocks when I was 19 to join the Air Force. What do you love most about the Macleay? It would have to be the lifestyle. After moving around with the Air Force and working in Sydney after I left the Air Force after twenty years, I was happy to watch Sydney in the rear vision mirror. I found Sydney to have a harsh, unfriendly, frantic environment so I was happy to return, firstly to Wauchope then to the Rocks. Where do you work and what do you love about your work? I work for North Coast Fire and Security as a technician doing routine maintenance and repairs of fire and security systems. The thing I most enjoy is interacting with customers no two days are the same. What do you like least about your work? The attitudes and disregard of some businesses toward regulations and public safety. How do you start your day? Opening my eyes and preparing a good breakfast of eggs, bacon and mushrooms and getting on the road by 7am as I cover the area from Grafton to Kempsey. What do you do in your spare time? Read, try and grow orchids, watch cricket or football, though I’d prefer to watch baseball if they televised it. What is the achievement you are most proud of? Being able to raise two fantastic kids while dragging them around the country while doing my military service but I suppose not losing any of my digits from making a mistake as an armourer working with explosives during demolition was a big one.

OVER the Xmas break I had the pleasure of spending some time (not enough of course) in a couple of our unique and individual small towns. Over a drink I received some feedback on the future of both Comboyne and Wauchope, the economic role of both of which are now somewhat diminished from the more dominant role they both played in the early timber industry. Both are quaint, well preserved but only a fraction of production-type jobs exist. People say why can’t council help bring jobs to these areas? They want franchises and some larger retailers and seem to think this would be a measure of true progress - of having truly ‘arrived’. But I reckon this would kill our smaller townships. We can do much better than a franchise’s low paying jobs and common corporate formats. In my mind, these couple of conversations reflected that unfortunately, some people seem to think that a sense of place should be measured by its sense of homogeneity with everywhere else - doing what others do – and being funded by State and Federal Government partnerships that reward standardisation - our concrete built environments, common format architecture and lifestyle. I have always believed that here is tremendous potential in the people that are already in our rural towns and want to see them prosper and grow.
INSIDE COUNCIL
With Cr Trevor Sargeant
Portfolios: Future Planning and Environment; Economic Development, Events and Tourism
My own experience in working with many people with ideas over the years confirms this to be the case. Surely then the job of economic development is not to get caught up in the seductive, high risk and high cost game of attracting employment – that is, attracting the big corporates from out of town – but rather nurturing our own. I think it is important that the concept of developing local aspiration, passion, talent and achievement remains strong. And our infrastructure needs to take pace with enterprise development. A community’s ability to provide the necessary infrastructure commensurate with enterprise growth and a strong commitment to build upon its uniqueness and special qualities (Comboyne – speciality fruit and vegetables, dairy processing, Wauchope – hardwood timber value-adding, niche manufacturing) will help predict the sustainability of the population.
PORT Macquarie-Hastings Council is actively seeking to partner and support community groups through its Community Grants Program, and help realise activities and projects that have local community benefit. Council invites all interested groups to attend a one hour information session being held in Laurieton, Wauchope and Port Macquarie in early February, where staff will guide all attendees through the process that will assist in improving their chances of submitting a successful application. Approximately $80,000 is being made available through Round 2 of the 201516 Community Grants Program, with applications opening on February 10 and the successful recipients being announced in April/May. Over the past year, Council has distributed over $140,000 to 27 local community organisations to assist in increasing participation, accessibility and the range of quality community activities and programs. Sessions will take place as follows: • Wauchope - Tuesday February 2, 12pm1pm at Wauchope Senior Citizens Centre • Laurieton - Thursday February 4, 12pm1pm at Laurieton United Services Club • Port Macquarie - Friday February 5, between 12pm-1pm and Monday 8 February between 5.30pm & 6.30pm at Council’s Administration Centre.
Facinated or spellbound - take your pick
I HAVE no problem with witches. I have known some people who have been called witches, but I can’t think of an occasion when I have used the term to describe someone – not to her face anyway. But I suggest you be careful when you describe a woman as fascinating. You could be calling her a witch without realising it. Did you know that one of the earliest uses of the word fascination was a description of someone who engaged in witchcraft? For example, Ben Jonson said in 1598 that he had been fascinated by Jupiter but he would be ‘unwitch’d by law’. In 1621 Robert Burton in The Anatomy of Melancholy asked why ‘witches and old women fascinate and bewitch children’. That, of course, raises another question: Why did they include old women when writing about witches? I don’t seek an answer; it was just an observation. I would never call an old woman a witch. I might think it, but that doesn’t count. The word fascinate was even used in an item about a cure for bad breath, if a 1657 comment by Richard Tomlinson can count for anything – ‘to fascinate and cure stinking breaths’. In 1845 Todd and Bowman in The Physiological Anatomy and Physiology of Man said ‘the serpent fascinates its prey, apparently by
my

the power of its eyes’. My copy of the First English Dictionary, published in 1604, said the word ‘falcinate’, which seems to be the same as fascinate – maybe they couldn’t spell -- meant ‘to bewitch or disfigure by inchauntment’. Samuel Johnson in his 1755 dictionary said the word meant ‘to bewitch, to enchant, to influence in some wicked and secret manner’. Why secret? The word comes from the Latin fascinare, ‘to bewitch’ among other things. An early bloke was involved in sorcery. I could tell you more about him, but some people, including this paper’s editor, might find it not a subject for the clean family newspaper. Let’s just say that some people around that time hung around their necks an amulet in the shape of a penis ‘to ward off evil spells’. I don’t think it worked.

In subsequent years the word fascinate climbed in the social scale. Women discovered it and decided they could use it to their advantage. These days, when we describe a woman as fascinating, we are being complimentary, most of the time anyway. We are describing her as enchanting, or at least attractive. My big dictionary says to fascinate is ‘to affect by witchcraft or magic, to bewitch, enchant, lay under a spell’. So that word witchcraft still exists. The dictionary goes on to say ‘the casting of a spell, sorcery, enchantment’. John Scott in A Visit to Paris said ‘a Frenchwoman will ever be felt to be a creature of fascination’. He said this in 1816, so was he saying Frenchwomen were witches or they were so good looking they put him under a spell? We have to assume he was trying to be complimentary. The big dictionary described a fascinator as either a magician or a charming or attractive person. I couldn’t find a mention of the hats they wear to the races. H James in 1878 described a woman, ‘a fascinatress’, as ‘a charmer’. So, take your pick. But don’t say I didn’t warn you. A fascinating woman is either a bit of a witch or someone who meets all your desires. Take your pick - and leave me out of it. lauriebarber.com; lbword@midcoast.com.au.

Megan is climbing to the top By CHRISTINA PARKIN Megan Cooper has had an exceptional twelve months achieving sporting, citizenship and academic recognition with entry into Charles Sturt University to study occupational therapy. (Photo: LINDSAY MOLLER)
“
Megan’s application for support from the HEF demonstrated all the hallmarks of an exemplary young woman, passionate about helping her wider community
“
WITH many students considering their options after the first round places released from the NSW University Admissions Centre (UAC) and Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centres (VTAC) recently, Port Macquarie student Megan Cooper is relieved that she has already been able to receive an ‘unconditional offer’, subject to her achieving the requisite Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR), based on her HSC results. Megan, an avid rock climber, is now one of 1360 students who have received first and main round offers from Charles Sturt University (CSU) and will be studying Occupational Therapy at the Albury Campus. UAC Director of Information Services Kim Paino said the ‘main round’ was still UAC’s largest offer round, and, even though there are less offers made in the main round than in previous years, universities are making more offers overall. “The trend has continued this year, with lots of early offers being made. This means that many of our applicants will already have an offer, but will still be waiting to see what might come through for them in the main round,” said Ms Paino. “So far, Charles Sturt University has made over 5,800 offers for undergraduate courses on its regional campuses, which is an overall increase of 14 per cent. We will also be making more offers in the coming weeks,” said Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic) Professor Toni Downes. At a local level, the CSU Port Macquarie Campus has received 723 applications with 525 offers made, which is an increase of 26 per cent on 2015 and in line with CSU’s projections for the campus. The most popular courses include criminal justice, clinical science (paramedic) and medical radiation science, teacher education (K12), and creative arts and design. Megan was successful in applying for a grant from the Hastings Education Fund late last year to assist with her move to Albury and studying
away from her family. Paediatric occupational therapy is the discipline that Megan wishes to specialise in so she can assist children with disabilities, including autism, with an early intervention to help them lead more productive lives. Seventeen-year-old Megan spends every spare minute enjoying, coaching and supervising rock climbing and came from a ranking of 24 in 2014 to come third in NSW and fourth in Australia last year. It was her passion for leading her school community to commit to helping those less fortunate that has formed the basis of her
successful nomination as the Port Macquarie Hastings Young Citizen of the Year. Megan was described by her teacher, Mr Andrew Parkin as ‘an inspirational young woman, demonstrating excellent leadership throughout the Hastings Secondary College – Westport Campus and the Port MacquarieHastings Community’. “I’m really excited to win Youth Citizen of the Year,” Megan said. “I wasn’t expecting to win, as I know the other nominee, Aaron Patton as a former member of Westport High, so I was really surprised. It’s more exciting than my sporting wins!”
Peter Cuskelly, Chairman of the Hastings Education Fund (HEF), said it was no surprise that Megan had been successfully nominated for the Hastings Young Citizen of the Year. “Megan’s application for support from the HEF demonstrated all the hallmarks of an exemplary young woman, passionate about helping her wider community, so the committee of the Hastings Education Fund further congratulates her on achieving this accolade,” said Mr Cuskelly. It is not too late to apply to study in 2016. Second round offers have been released on Tuesday, February 2 and further applications for first semester study to the UAC will be considered until Friday, February 12. CSU has the capacity to take additional students in most courses. Anyone contemplating study either on campus or online should call CSU on 1800 334 733, for advice on courses available, entry requirements and pathways to CSU, and how to apply.

Isaac trains for success
By CHRISTINA PARKIN WHILE most teenagers prefer to sleep well into the day, you’ll find Isaac Sanderson, 15, has been up since about 4am, training for the Stramit Country Surf Life Saving Titles to be held this weekend at South West Rocks. Isaac loves running and since he started with Little Athletics and Nippers from the age of six, he has loved cross country events and triathlons. Isaac was so keen with his running that his Dad, James, and Mum, Rachele, have followed suit and have competed with Isaac in a number of Ironman events. Currently a member and volunteer of the Wauchope-Bonny Hills Surf Life Saving Club, Isaac is also a member of the North Coast Academy of Sport Triathlon Program and has a number of sponsors, such as Garmin and Ohana Ocean Athletics. Isaac is also the current Australian title holder for the Under 14 2km beach run. Isaac, who is currently a Year 10 student at St Joseph’s Regional College in Port Macquarie, fills his spare time working a number of part-time
Hard-working young local athlete Isaac Sanderson (above left) and above (centre) ready to compete for the Wauchope-Bonny Hills Surf Life Saving Club jobs at McDonalds, as a barista with Black Fish Café and as a bike mechanic with Graham Seers Cyclery. Isaac is always seen volunteering after any event he has been competing in and cheering the other competitors on. “Cheering means so much to the participants and I love encouraging them on,” says Isaac. “I also think the media needs to put more attention on those who will never win, but still have a special goal.” Setting his sights on becoming a Rotary Youth Exchange student has become another goal that Isaac is pursuing. Determined to fund his own way, Isaac has set about raising the $8000 he needs to get to Brazil, his country of choice, with a raffle. “If I’m not selected to go to Brazil, then I will donate any funds I have raised equally between Wauchope-Bonny Hills Surf Lifesaving Club and Rotary Down Under.”

Plenty of interest in annual expo
THEY say curiosity killed the cat, but there are many people in the community who vary from being just ‘a little bit interested’ to being ‘very sceptical’ about the ‘other side’. Katrina Shailer has been developing her abilities and skills in spiritual healing using various modalities for over 40 years. It is only through exposure to like-minded persons that these unique abilities can be nurtured and developed. “You learn through spirit and by sharing how you learn and understand your abilities and spirituality,” explains Ms Shailer. Katrina lives in Inverell and has been organising the annual ‘Body, Mind, Soul Expo’ at Port Macquarie Panthers for many years. The expo enables a wide variety of spiritual practitioners to come together and be available for the public to access – and to learn from each other! This year’s Body, Mind, Soul Expo at Port Panthers will be held from 10am to 5pm on the weekend of February 6 and 7. “We find a wide variety of people attend the expos who are driven by curiosity and of course the odd negative comment is inevitable,” said Ms Shailer. For the cost of a gold coin donation, attendees of the expo can speak with psychics, astrologists, clairvoyants and healers; have a photo taken of their aura; have readings taken from on and within their body shakras to obtaining various paraphernalia like dream catchers, crystals, books and oracle cards. However, one of the more popular events is the Psychic Channelling and Healing Night held prior to the expo on Friday night, February 5 from 7 – 9.30pm at the Pier Room at Port Panthers. Katrina uses the spiritual name granted to her by a Navajo chief – Katrina Neia Wai - to begin the evening with some specific channelling. Tickets for this event are $45 and can be obtained at the door or booked by contacting Katrina on 0434 761 362.

My House MY HOME
If disaster strikes you may find your insurance cover is not what you thought
13
If burglars strike while you are holidaying, you may get ‘robbed’ twice
Check the devil in the detail “
Don’t do the homework, and you may not receive your payout should you be the victim of an unfortunate event this summer
“
AS extreme summer temperatures look set to continue, our homes are vulnerable to obvious threats such as bushfires, but also to seasonal dangers that could cost the average Australian hundreds of thousands of dollars. Comparethemarket.com.au has researched home and contents insurance policies and identified the top seven – and most surprising – risks to the average home this summer. These risks are based on caveats in product disclosure statements that require homeowners to have checks and balances in place to ensure they’re eligible for any claims. Don’t do the homework, and you may not receive your payout should you be the victim of an unfortunate event this summer. Abigail Koch, spokesperson at comparethemarket.com.au details the work home owners should do now to make sure they don’t have a disastrous and expensive summer season. 1. Leaving the house vacant: Break-ins increase over holiday periods – for example in Victoria they jumped 8 per cent for the last four years during January. Recruit a friend or neighbour to keep an eye on your place, or you could lose more than your precious belongings if the worst happens. Long holidays overseas or even extended work trips are common for Aussies, but you could face problems with your insurance if you stay away for more than 60 days. Abigail says: “If disaster strikes when you’re away, then you could face a hefty ‘unoccupancy excess’ when you go to make a claim, or worse still, you could find you’re no longer covered at
all. You must make special arrangements with your insurer to maintain your insurance.” It’s great to better connect with neighbours or anyone in the area who is generally home when you’re not. “Most burglars prefer to operate during the day, when the property in question is most likely empty with the occupants at work so having someone nearby who would recognise an intruder can be helpful,” said Abigail. 2. Putting home jobs on hold: “If there is an incident such as a fire – you could have a claim questioned if you have let the maintenance of your home go for a while. This could end up costing you hundreds of thousands of dollars,” says Abigail. We know to keep gutters and roofs clear but you should add general upkeep to the list. Abigail says: “Some policies may require you to keep the home, unit and contents well maintained and in good condition. If you do not meet your responsibilities, they may reduce or refuse to pay your claim or cancel
your insurance policy.” 3. No place like gnome: Gnome collections, garden furniture and statues are covered under most home policies in the event of fire or theft. However, Abigail says, it’s much harder to insure your garden. If you have a prized Japanese maple or stunning rose collection, and they are pilfered overnight or damaged by fire, they are not covered by the majority of insurers. Some premium home policies offer cover, but typically only up to a maximum value of $2000. 4. Don’t let your home get eaten alive: “Homes are not protected by insurance from pest infestations – prevention is the only way to deal with them. And, a typical infestation treatment can cost around $7000 or more,” Abigail says. Worse still, the results of a recent study showed that termite activity increases as temperatures rise and the pests will also travel further for food. That means these home-
munching critters will be hyperactive in a heatwave. Termites cause $1.3 billion in repair costs each year and your home has a one in three chance of being the victim to termite damage. 5. Don’t be ruined by renovation: Some insurance policies specify that if you’re undergoing renovations that cost more than $50,000, then your legal liability cover could be affected. This is the cover you have in case someone claims compensation against you for injury on your property. “Compensation claims can run into the hundreds of thousands if someone is injured or worse, in your home or garden,” Abigail says. “Make sure you tell your insurer about a renovation project and the increase in value to your home to ensure you are not left in serious debt.” 6. Keep an eye on spas and above-ground pools: Just invested in a deluxe above ground pool or a swanky standalone spa? “You need to check your individual policy document to see if these items are included. If they’re not, they may need separate insurance.” 7. Don’t clutter your yard with trailers, caravans and boats: Many Aussies love weekend hobbies that involve watercraft and it’s not unusual for properties to have a hobie cat or a caravan on the block. Abigail says, “If they’re timber, these items can not only add to your fire risk but each of them may require separate insurance as they are seldom covered by a general home and contents policy.”

My House MY HOME Aussies change watering habits THE so-called ‘Millennium Drought’ of the 2000s emphasised the importance of water to the Australian people and, in many parts of the country, 2006 was the driest year on record. By the end of the drought in 2012, the Federal Government had provided $4.5 billion in drought assistance. Since then, an increasing number of Australians are incorporating intelligent water usage into their daily lives. A recent survey of over 2000 people was conducted by garden hose specialists, Hoselink, to discover the changing hose habits of households across the nation. The survey discovered that more than 30 per cent of Australian homes are using at least some recycled water to water the garden. Victorians (40%) and Queenslanders (35%) are leading the way for the use of recycled water. According to Tim Kierath, founder of Hoselink, this is a welcome change of habit. “The hose habits of Australians have changed since the last drought when severe water restrictions were put in place and it’s refreshing to see that Australians are increasingly embracing the use of recycled water,” said Tim. “As our community expands and we develop new subdivisions that offer recycled water, there will be an increase in this important initiative.” But there are also other ways to conserve water around the home. Besides watering the garden, hoses are being put to work to clean the
house and outdoor areas. More than two thirds (70%) of respondents said that they use their hose to clean down the deck, pavers and tiled areas and 60 per cent are hosing down the house and washing the windows. “Particularly in coastal areas, it is recommended to clean the salt off the house to avoid corrosion,” said Tim. “But for decks and paved areas, we recommend first clearing away the bulk of the leaves and dirt with a rake, broom or leaf blower. Using a high pressure washer or specialty jet sprayer on the hose is ideal as they use a relatively small amount of water. Further savings can be enjoyed by fitting good quality hose connectors to your hose and pressure washer to guarantee no wastage.”

How to get rid of roaches THE warm weather is causing an outbreak of cockroaches and Aussies are frantically trying to get rid of them, with on-demand cleaning service UrbanOutsource seeing a 60% increase in requests to rid homes of the nasty critters. With the high temperatures set to continue and stormy, humid conditions predicted, the number of cockroaches trying to make their way into our homes shows no sign of slowing. “We’ve been inundated by enquiries, so it’s clearly a growing problem,” said Elke Keeley, co-founder, UrbanOutsource. Cockroaches are cold-blooded insects that thrive in warm, humid conditions, so it’s normal to see an increase around this time of year, but not on this scale,” she added. By their nature, cockroaches are scavengers that are most likely to live around the perimeter of buildings, entering inside homes simply to hunt for food.
To help Aussies keep their homes cockroach free UrbanOutsource has put together the following tips: • Place non-refrigerated food in sealed containers. As well as preventing cockroaches, it will also keep food clean and fresh; • Empty the inside bins regularly placing them in outside bins away from the home. If this isn’t possible, keep inside bins covered and garbage bags tied; • Spray and clean cooking surfaces and the inside of the oven after every use. Keeping cooking areas clean will greatly reduce the risk of attracting cockroaches; • Treat surfaces with a non-toxic spray such as Orange Guard. These products will kill cockroaches without leaving harmful chemicals in the home; • Sweep floors and vacuum regularly, especially in the kitchen.

Macleay plays its part in bringing historic short film festival to life
THE 25th Anniversary of Australia’s Short Film Festival makes its appearance on the Macleay over three nights next week. Residents of Port Macquarie will have to patient until Saturday, March 12. The ten-day festival kicked off with an ‘under the stars’ screening at the Bondi Pavilion in January before touring to many regional areas, which rarely have an opportunity to view this collection of the world’s best short films. As well as visiting over 50 venues around
Australia, Flickerfest will be screening at Crescent Head Public School on Thursday, February 11 with the ‘Best of Australian Shorts’; Gladstone Hall on Friday February 12 with the ‘International Program 1’ selection and in Kempsey at the Oddfellows Hall on Saturday February 13 with the ‘International 2’ selection. All sessions begin at 7.30pm and tickets are $13 at the door or at www.tickethost.com. The Macleay Valley Arts Council (MVAC) has had a great partnership with Flickerfest and
is proud that there is the opportunity for the screenings locally. It is quite a coup that three different programs are available for film buffs in the region, as most centres only get to screen one programme. MVAC spokesperson for the three big nights, Steve MacDonald, says: “It’s a real positive for the valley to see the latest top class short films from a festival that is accredited with the Academy Awards.” Flickerfest’s Film Director, Bronwyn Kidd,
is delighted that the short films are to screen in so many venues around Australia from February through to May, including the Macleay. Running time of films is between 6 and 25 minutes with an average of eight short films screened each night at the Flickerfest screenings. All sessions begin at 7.30 pm with a total running time of films approximately 110 minutes. To find out more information on the selections for each night, go to the Flickerfest website at www.flickerfest.com.au
No age barrier to musical talent By CHRISTINA PARKIN IT’S never too late to learn a musical instrument and the Adult Instrument Learning Program is underway on Tuesday nights from 5 to 6pm at the Mac Adams Music Centre, off Lord Street, near the Player’s Theatre. Newcomer to learning an instrument is Rose Burke who has spent the last twelve months learning the alto saxophone. “I’ve always loved music and wanted to learn to play an instrument. I’ve only been learning for twelve months but our music director, Anne Geoghan is an excellent tutor – so encouraging and inspiring,” said Mrs Burke. The Scottish air ‘Loch Lomond’ has become one of the songs that Rose has learnt this year and grown to love it. Rose learnt the recorder at school, so a friend recommended she try out the alto saxophone as the fingering was similar. “Once I got the blowing right, it was funny, because my fingers remembered how to play ‘God Save the Queen’, which I learnt during the recorder class at school. The Adult Learning Program is conducted during school terms and is a very cost effective way of learning music. Once learners finish the two tuition books, they ‘graduate’ to other ensembles attached to the Port Macquarie Hastings Municipal Band. “It’s so nice to not only learn to play your instrument, but to learn how all the instruments weave in and out of a piece of music. You don’t get that by learning solo. “I’ve found that learning an instrument has changed the whole way I listen to music. I used to just enjoy the lyrics, but have now become more discerning in how I listen and often will try and identify the various instruments playing.
Seasoned adult learner, Rose Burke, enjoys playing her instrument of choice – the alto saxophone Tuition of $12.50 a session is charged and instrument hire is only $40 for your choice of flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, French horn, baritone, euphonium, tuba, percussion or drums. You can call Anne Geoghan on 0413 622 466 to discuss how you can achieve learning to play. “You are never too old to learn,” says Mrs Burke. “Just lose the fear of starting something new.”

AUSTRALIANS know him as the unconventional artist from the popular TV series ‘X Factor’, however, now it’s time for the mid north coast region to get to know Dean Ray. This amazing talent will be performing at the North Haven Bowling and Recreation Club on February 13. Australians first became aware of the Melbourne based artist during an audition on X-Factor Australia. He sang ‘Bette Davis Eyes’ and had the audience in awe and cheering along. Redfoo than told him to check his passport, because he’s ‘out of this world’. From tiny Meandarra, in Queensland, Ray was born into music. While his mother was heavily pregnant with Dean she would play bass in rock bands.
In fact, both parents were musicians and travelled Australia with the youngster by their side. Ray would sleep in guitar cases and would travel to each beer-soaked venue with his family. “Traveling with musicians you pick up a thing or two,” he says. At 16 he left home to chase his dreams. In 2014 everything fell into place. On October 20 Dean Ray was announced the runner up of the X-Factor 2014 series. Number 1 on the Sanity Music Charts, it’s only the beginning for Dean Ray. Ray will be performing on Saturday, February, 13 at the North Haven Bowls and Recreation Club from 7pm. Tickets are $30 and can be purchased from www.outix.com.au/tickets/event/21922

Community finds very healthy voice By CHRISTINA PARKIN THE health benefits of singing have been well documented and there appears to be a resurgence in the formation of community singing. Marie van Gend, pictured, is currently leading the community choir ‘Kala Rava’ (meaning low melodious sound) which meets on a Tuesday evening in school terms from 7pm at the Conservatorium Mid North Coast in the Old Scout Hall at 56 Hollingworth Street. The group currently has about 40 members of both experienced and inexperienced singers. No audition is required but the philosophy of the group is that music is to be shared and enjoyed, and Kala Rava strives to produce the best sound they can through a wide variety of musical genres. “The music we sing is in several parts and can be challenging, but we support newer singers in the learning process,” says Ms van Gend. “If you are interested, then feel free to come along and try us out and see if we fit with you. The first rehearsal is free.” Marie can be contacted for more information on Kala Rava on 0448 115 334 or mvangend@ me.com And not to be left out, blokes are specifically invited to attend the Historic Court House on the corner of Clarence and Hay St (diagonally opposite the Glasshouse) on Thursday evenings between 6.30 – 8.30pm in school terms. A special ‘Bring a Bloke’ night is planned for Thursday February 4 (tonight) so if you know a male wishing to go beyond singing in the shower or at the wheel on family holidays, get him to turn up or email blokes notes choir leader, Leanne Johnson at realmensinging@gmail.com The internationally acclaimed School of Hard Knocks (SOHK) will build its first regional choir with the Port Macquarie Community College (PMCC) kicking off with a call for interested locals from Port Macquarie, Camden Haven and Wauchope to attend a choir recruitment session
at 10.30am on Tuesday, February 16, 2016. “We are specifically inviting locals who might be experiencing homelessness, disadvantage, long term unemployment, mental health conditions or disability to join the choir, said PMCC Community Relationships Manager, Dr Robbie Lloyd. “And, no experience is necessary,” says Marie van Gend who is appointed by The School of Hard Knock’s creator, Dr Johnathon Welch AM, to take this first regional choir on its musical, life changing journey. “The choir will rehearse once a week, probably on a Tuesday morning followed with a complimentary lunch prepared by volunteers who will also sing with the choir,” said Dr Lloyd. When asked how big the choir could be Ms Van Gend said ‘there is no limit - all are welcome’. “We want as many people as possible to experience the joy of singing and its accompanying benefits,” she said. Dr Welch’s ’s internationally acclaimed School of Hard Knocks model aims to reconnect isolated individuals with their community, build mental and physical well-being, create confidence and a sense of belonging and opportunities to contribute meaningfully to society through performance. Additionally, as the school has evolved, it also offers formative programs to help build pathways to further education and employment opportunities in line with such as PMCC’s new and existing SkillsLink education programs including a new Life Skills program to be launched this month. Dr Welch began The School of Hard Knocks with a Sydney Street Choir in 2001 that featured in a world-wide ABC TV series in 2006 called the Choir of Hard Knocks. In 2006 he also launched the Melbourne Choir of Hard Knocks in his home town and later established the ‘Absolutely Everybody Choir’ and other accompanying programs in Brisbane Queensland.

Port Macquarie Panthers Men’s North Haven Ladies
ONCE again the weather prevented the ladies from playing bowls on Thursday, January 28. However some ladies will be trying to get in a bit of practice before pennants start next week by playing on other days or at other clubs when the opportunity arises. Members are reminded that the singles championship will commence on Wednesday, February 10, so check the board to see when you are drawn or if you are marking. There will be a Veterans Day to be held at North Haven Bowling Club Monday, April 4 and good luck to all the members playing in the District Pairs events this week. On a sadder note, there will be a memorial service to be held for Gay Hawkins, who passed away recently, in the club house commencing at 10.30am on Friday, February 5.
Lake Cathie Ladies
CONGRATULATIONS to the North Haven team of Wilma Steadman, Irene Page and Adele Pobje for winning the District Triples defeating Port Macquarie City. This week it is the District Pairs with the finals to be played at North Haven on Thursday February 4. Saturday’s lucky rink winners were Margaret Waite, Glenys Webster and Faith Buggie and the runners up were Anna Innes, Di Spinks, Moya Harper and Marilyn Dewson. The last Pennant Practice is this Friday, February 5 at 9am, being the last chance to fine tune before our first Pennant games on Tuesday February 9. Grades 1, 2, 3 and 5 will be playing and so if you are able, please come down and support our ladies as winning that first game is a big confidence booster.
Lake Cathie Men’s
THE skies parted last Friday to allow the Fours Championship Final to be played and the team of Stewart Hodges, Neil Proctor, Frank Ryan and Geoff Worley proved too good for their opposition. Lake Cathie Men’s Fours Championship winners, from left, Stewart Hodges, Neil Proctor, Frank Ryan and Geoff Worley
Mark and Martina Holt on ‘Hullabaloo’ had a very successful day PORT Macquarie Sailing Club held race five of the Summer Series last Sunday, which was also the second round of the interclub competition between Port Macquarie Sailing Club, Queens Lake Sailing Club and Great Lakes Sailing Club. The first round of the competition was held at Queens Lake on the Saturday and the final rounds will be in two weeks, on the weekend of February 13 and 14 at Great Lakes (Forster). Sunday’s breeze was a rather unusual northerly, but mostly quite pleasant to sail in and the top of the tide during the race meant the tidal run had little impact. A good fleet of eight Catamarans contested that class. Frank O’Rourke on Dino won on yardstick followed by Tony Kuhn on ‘Stella’, Jack Corthals on ‘Harpic’, Grady and Alice McNee on ‘Ex for Breakfast’, Scott Witchard on ‘Hummer’, and Ron Apps in ‘Kimbo 3’. ‘Stella’ took the handicap win ahead of ‘Harpic’, ‘Dino’, ‘Hummer’, ‘Ex for Breakfast’, and ‘Kimbo 3’.
Rohan Nosworthy on ‘Return’ and Dave Winter on ‘Spica’ both failed to finish. Not to be outdone, the monohulls also had eight starters. Mark and Martina Holt in ‘Hullabaloo’ revelled in the conditions and had a resounding win on yardstick, followed by Kelly Miller in ‘Devocean’, Terry Howard in ‘Ratz’, Jeff Walsh and Norman Broomhall in ‘Big Bang’, Simon and Elsa Gandy with help from their friend Kayley in ‘Voyager’, Tony Walker in ‘Deep Purple’, Stuart Symons in ‘Jupiter’, and Steve and Caleb Bohlsen in ‘Splash Dance’. ‘Hullabaloo’ also took the win on handicap, ahead of ‘Voyager’, ‘Devocean’, ‘Ratz’, ‘Deep Purple’, ‘Big Bang’, ‘Jupiter’, and ‘Splash Dance’. Next weekend is the sixth race of the Summer Series starting at 2pm, and Andrew Richards is rostered on duty.

Golden regatta for Port club By CHRISTINA PARKIN
AT a recent major regatta held in Taree, the Port Macquarie Rowing Club (PMRC) achieved five first places, eight second places and ten third places. The Manning River was the site for the largest rowing regatta in NSW. The event attracted over 500 competitors from the 34 rowing clubs across NSW and was jointly organised by the Manning River and Port Macquarie Rowing Clubs. The event was a huge success despite the weather deciding to show its extremes between driving rain and wind to calm blue skies and an excellent location to showcase mid north coast
attractions. Twenty nine rowers of the PMRC competed in fifty-three races. The winners were: Men’s Masters Single (Glawson) Men’s C Grade Coxed Four (Causley, Hogan, Havelund, Shaw, Gardner cox) Men’s Masters Coxed Four (McCartney, Watts, Kempnich, Munro, Gardner cox) Men’s Masters Quad Composite (Harwood PMRC) Men’s C Grade Single Scull (Bywater) Not to be left out, Brooke Hancey, Stacey Coombes, Amelia Stennett and Mary Shelley also competed. The girls, aged between 14 and
17 from St Joseph’s Regional College, have been rowing between two and five years. Coached by Alan McCartney, they train 1-2 times a week, fitting their sessions in between school and study activities. Alan, who was also racing at the Taree Regatta said he was very proud of the girl’s true team spirit. “It’s not always about winning,” said Mr McCartney, “We want the girls to enjoy what they do and have fun too”. When asked what attracted them to the sport, the girls all agreed it was a great way to relax, stay fit and forget about the stresses of school
life. “There is nothing nicer than the serenity of rowing on the river and watching the sun come up,” said Mary Shelley. Apart from the training, the girls also enjoy the social aspect of racing, as well as the club camaraderie and positive vibe at regattas. “You get out what you put in,” says Ms Coombes, who started rowing as a way to get fit after a knee operation. Learn to row programmes for juniors are run by the PMRC and open to all children over the age of 12. You can find out more at the website www.portmacquarierowingclub.com.au
Dragons roaring with pride JUBILATION is an understatement as a description for the excitement the north coast dragon boat representative teams are feeling in the after-wake of winning three gold medals at the NSW State Dragon Boating Titles at Penrith last Sunday. The Northern Pride team, pictured, won the state championship but they were also competing against Southern and Western regions for the right to represent NSW State Regional at the Australian Dragon Boat Titles in March. The team won gold in all three categories over the 500m distance which were the mixed, women’s and open. Clubs from all over the mid north coast combined to win convincingly and included representatives from Flamin’ Dragons Port Macquarie, Kempsey River Rats, Camden Haven, Great Lakes Pearl Dragons, Coffs Coast, Nambucca Heads, Ballina and the Rainbow Dragons from Lennox Head. The Flamin’ Dragons women’s team also performed very well making the final of the Masters Women’s category, finishing a credible fifth in the final behind much younger Sydney clubs. For more info, see the Flamin’ Dragons website at www.flamindragonsportmacquarie.org.au.
